ok here it goes

hans sy was here last saturday. he said that he is very impressed with the way sm city davao is going. infact, malaki ang contribution ng sm davao sa profits ng sm prime.

he said the 2011 is the year for davao. construction of sm lanang will be last quarter of this year to first quarter of next year. tatapusin daw nila ng 1 year.
most probably daw mauuna sila magopen sa ayala.

he also said na sigurado na mar open dito ang ayala. i also found out the they (the sys's) are also a minority shareholder sa ayala land so he knows what he is talking about

by jan 2011, sm city lanang will open (alam na natin lahat ito). what we dont know is that hans sy said that sm lanang will be a premier mall. meaning the mall that is going to be constructed in lanang will be like the mall of asia. the mall will include an imax theater and a ice skating rink among others. it will mostly house high end shops. there willbe outdoor cafes and an outdoor auditorium.

eto na muna ang ireveal ko. meron pang iba.

news news news tayoo:
BOC x-ray inspection project generated P551M from May 2007 to Dec. 2008
Economy
Written by VG Cabuag / Reporter
Monday, 02 February 2009 00:17
FEES collected from the Bureau of Customs’s (BOC) x-ray inspection project generated millions of pesos from its operations, but there are still a few units left that are still unused as a result of a low volume of cargoes.

The BOC said in a report that it had generated some P551.68 million since its inception in May 2007 through December 2008, with collections in the port of Manila far exceeding those with other gateways in the country.

Of the total fees collected, P140.93 million were trust fund and P410.74 million were general fund.

From January to December 2008, the BOC generated P256.139 million from the fees collected from the importers, three quarters of which, or P192.12 million, goes to general fund while the remaining 25 percent, or P64 million, were intended for trust fund.

Ma. Lourdes Mangaoang, BOC x-ray inspection project head, said at least three mobile units and the relocatable x-ray machine still remain unused at the warehouse of the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) in Batangas.

The said units were deployed supposedly for the use of PPA’s Batangas Port, but there are no cargoes being handled yet at the said port that was funded by a Philippine government loan from Japan Bank for International Cooperation.

At the moment, no cargoes are being handled at the Phase II of Batangas Port, even if there are already equipment installed there, as shippers shun the terminal due to various reasons.

“We are going to [set up] the machines as soon as vessels with containerized cargoes call on the Port since at present, only bulk shipments are discharged in the port,” she said.

Manila International Container Port made the highest collections of P140 million; followed by Port of Manila with P84.73 million; while Port of Cebu collected P16.23 million.

Port of Davao collected P8.85 million; Port of Cagayan de Oro, P2 million; Subport of General Santos, P2 million; Subport of Tagoloan, P1.64 million; and Port of Subic Bay, P808,287.

The bureau sets aside 75 percent of the total fees to loan payments and 25 percent to the operational cost. The money was deposited as remittance to the Bureau of Treasury.

At the moment, there are 30 x-ray scanners scattered across the country. The BOC said if there is a need for an additional mobile scanner due to an increase in container van arrival, 28 of the machines are mobile scanners that may be relocated and pulled out for another port. Operating hours per day range from 9 to 17 hours depending on the ports.

The said scanners were procured through a $35-million government-to-government loan from China.

About two thirds of the proceeds of the security fees will be used to pay the loan, with an interest rate of 2 percent a year payable in 20 years, and the rest to a fund that will pay for the administrative and maintenance cost.

US premium chocolate features Davao cocoa
Manila Standard
2 February 2009 | 11:00 PM

SPRINGFIELD, MissouriAskinosie Chocolate has produced a bar made from cocoa imported from Davao, its first single-origin chocolate bar from the Philippines that it calls Davao, Philippines 77%.

The first cacao brought to Asia in 1600 was grown in the Philippines, and Askinosie Chocolate is the first to export Filipino cocoa beans in nearly 25 years, says the company, a small batch chocolate manufacturer that buys its beans directly from farmers.

The beans used to make this tantalizing bar are very exclusive, making the Davao, Philippines chocolate bar uniquely exotic.

Ari Weinzweig, founder of the world-famous Zingermans Deli, describes the 77% Bar as Dark and deep with a touch of toastiness. Its dry like a full-bodied, well aged red wine. This bar is compelling in its own East Asian way.

We are excited about [Askinosies] work with [Filipino] farmers so that people around the world can share the taste of what our cocoa beans can produce, says Josephine Ramos of the Cacao Foundation of the Philippines.

Philippine Consul-General Blesila Cabrera and Trade Representative Glenn
The Davao Bar is made from lush, tropical, shade-grown, chemical-free Trinitario beans, and is described as the chocolatiest-tasting bar from Askinosie yet.Penaranda were in Springfield for the release party for the Davao Bar on Jan. 30.

Davao Chinese unity more spectacular than any fireworks display

We all wore red and banged all our drums to celebrate the first-ever Davao Chinese New Year Festival from January 24 to 31, 2009. And for the culminating event, no less than the Consul General of the People’s Republic of China, the Honorable He Shijing, joined us and stayed in Davao City for three days.

It was the Consul General’s first time in Davao City, although he has been posted in the Philippines since 2007 at the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Cebu that covers the whole of Visayas and Mindanao.
The Consul General formally opened “TSINA: Chinese Culture & Arts Exhibit” at the Museo Dabawenyo, which will run for the whole month of February, and unveiled the Chinatown Unity Arch along Magsaysay Avenue with Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte last Saturday, January 31st.
He was pleasantly surprised with what he saw and experienced and even predicted that Davao will soon be the next biggest thing in the Philippines. He praised the excellent peace and order condition that he said fuels the city’s fast economic growth and expressed his gratitude to Mayor Duterte for his overwhelming support to the Chinese community in Davao. He calls Mayor Duterte as the “most famous mayor in the Philippines” and credited him for the development of the “biggest Chinatown in the whole country.
Mayor Duterte, in turn, showed his appreciation for the contribution of the Chinese in Davao’s growth as a city by hosting a thanksgiving dinner for the movers and shakers of the Davao City Chinatown at Grand Men Seng Hotel on the evening of the inauguration of the Chinatown Unity Arch.
“The destiny of our nation and our city does not depend on the Western world, but it lies with our Asian neighbors,” declared Mayor Duterte. He informed the Chinese Consul General of the sister city agreement Davao forged with Nanning, China and told him of the city’s desire to develop strong ties with more cities and provinces in China.
During the Mayor’s dinner, the Davao Chinese community showed their unity behind Mayor Duterte’s vision for the future development of our city and they wore their barong tagalogs and ethnic-inspired clothes with pride signifying that they also now consider themselves Filipinos and Dabawenyos.
That show of unity in diversity that only Davao can magnificently pull off beats any fireworks display as we all welcome the Year of the Ox.

Davao famous for it's banana, coffee , tuna grills, cut flowers around the world and now comes chocolate!

'Davao' now a brand of dark choco in US
Wednesday, February 4, 2009

A CHOCOLATE bar recently distributed in the United States is named after Davao City.

Councilor Peter Laviña, who presented pictures and data regarding the product, bared this Tuesday.

The Davao 77 percent Dark Chocolate is among the newest addition to Askinosie's chocolate lines that were launched last January 30 in Springfield, Missouri.

"Last November 13, 2008, I and City Agriculturist Rocelio Tabay witnessed the first shipment of Davao cocoa beans to the US. Charita Puentespina and cocoa farmers around Malagos and Calinan consolidated seven tons of cocoa beans for their first export to the US," Laviña said.

He added the cocoa was grown chemical-free with the assistance of Mars Cocoa Development Center at Malagos.

The cocoa beans buyer was Shawn Askinosie, a lawyer who has become one of America's top leading chocolate manufacturers.

"This successful effort created new opportunities for Davao cocoa farmers, breaks new market in the US and carves a new name for Davao as a premium brand of exotic chocolate," Laviña said.

He added that amid the gloomy picture of global recession, here is one development worthy of praise for the city. (GLP)

Landco remains bullish despite economic crisis

Sun-Star (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/landco-remains-bullish-despite-economic-crisis)

AN EXECUTIVE of Landco Pacific Corporation, a leader in the development of world-class real estate properties, said they remain bullish in Mindanao amid the present global financial crisis.

Michael R. Reyes, Landco vice president for Visayas-Mindanao and Business Unit head, its newest resort community project -- Playa Azalea on the Island Garden City of Samal -- has gained an encouraging momentum in so far as lot sales in concerned.

"Around 25 lots were sold during the pre-selling late last year and as of April 2008, 200 of the total 600 lots have already been taken," Reyes said, adding that ridge lots and those near the beach are the most saleable.

For a minimum of P3 million, one can enjoy the comforts of urban living in a natural backdrop of beach, mountains and foliage Playa Azalea, a 33-hectare sprawling land located in Limao, Kaputian District in Samal, is a premier resort community that offers world-class amenities in an Asian Tropical landscape.

Expected to be developed within 2-3 years, Playa Azalea is said to be Landco's comeback project in Davao.

After several joint ventures in Davao several years ago that saw the creation of Woodridge, University Mall, and Las Terrazas, Landco decided to come back to Davao through Azalea -- a partnership with the Floirendos.

Aside from Playa Azalea, Reyes said they have just opened Woodridge in Zamboanga City in December 2007. In Cebu City, they are currently developing 250-hectare Terrazas de Cebu, the last prime property in the heart of Cebu that is covered by three barangays. It is expected to be completed in 10 years.

Over the last 19 years, Reyes said Landco has had joint ventures with more or less 20 joint ventures such as those with the Floirendo, Angara, Roxes, Prez-Rubio and other business prominent families.

As a developer of innovative lifestyle concepts like Punta Fuego, Leisure Farms and Playa Calatagan, Landco is said to be growing its organization to continuously lead in the development of world-class real estate products

"I define Landco's success as creating thriving communities where people chose to live and telling others about Landco," he said. "It is not the price but the value for money it creates though I can say we are priced less than the others."

Aside from value creation, Reyes said it is Landco's boasts of its professional development and deep "malasakit" for its properties and clients.

When asked on the prospects of real estate amid the present global crunch, Reyes said they are now creating parameters of sales scheme. We tell people that this is the time to invest.

"Crisis is just a reset button, just like a computer that hangs. Despite the crisis I still see people traveling, going to McDonalds, [and] malls," he added.

Landco has become a major, multi-product real estate development company engaged in high-end leisure, urban and hometown communities, hotels and resorts, malls and commercial business districts, and memorial parks.

Its leisure communities include Peninsula de Punta Fuego, an exclusive, world-class seaside community along the coast of Nasugbu, Batangas, which has become the benchmark for a seaside residential resort. Its success paved the way for the highly acclaimed second phase, Terrazas de Punta Fuego. Playa Azalea is Davao's Punta Fuego. (GAA)

for those na wala kabalo unsa ang Kipling.. mao ni siya..

Kipling is a company known especially for its line of nylon handbags, backpacks, luggage and accessories distinguished by their round rubber logo and furry monkey keychain. Today, with the belief that fashion and fun can exist together, Kipling continues to make high-quality bags and accessories in nylon, leather and new innovative fabrications, that are found all over the world.

If you check out its website, there is only one Kipling Shop in the Philippines - located in SM North Edsa's The Block.

The so-called Kipling Corners, on the other hand, are areas inside department stores displaying Kipling products. All Kipling Corners in the Philippines are likewise located inside the department stores of selected Metro Manila malls.

Ano kaya itong Kipling dito sa Davao? Shop or Corner? Well, based sa definition, alam nyo na kung anong sagot.

Confection contains first Filipino cacao exported anywhere since 1980s.

Kathleen O'Dell • News-Leader • January 30, 2009

Askinosie unveils new bar today

http://img212.imageshack.us/img212/2843/bildext7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
With cacao beans loaded in the hopper, Askinosie Chocolate production manager Kyle Malone (above) and owner Shawn Askinosie wait for the roaster to get to the correct temperature before processing chocolate in the company's Springfield factory.

http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/5498/bildelb6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
In August, Askinosie (second from left) met with cacao farmers in Davao, Philippines . Askinosie's trip resulted in an agreement with farmers and the first export of cacao from the Philippines in 25 years. (Askinosie Chocolate)

Askinosie Chocolate, the small-batch chocolate maker on Commercial Street, has yet another claim to fame.

Owner Shawn Askinosie will release his newest chocolate bar at a public party today , becoming the first chocolate maker in the world to export cacao beans from the Philippines since the mid-1980s.

So says Josephine Ramos of the Cacao Foundation of the Philippines, in helping Askinosie promote his 77 percent dark- chocolate bar made from shade-grown, chemical-free Trinitario beans grown by farmers in Davao.

The 3-ounce bars retail at the factory for $8, like his other dark chocolate bars. His 3-ounce white chocolate bars cost $10.50.

Each is packaged in a brown outer envelope with the likeness of the farmer who helped gather and ferment cacao beans for the bar .

"Peter V. Cruz ... Lead Farmer ... Authentic Single Origin," says the stamp on one Davao chocolate envelope.

All his products -- dark and white chocolate treats, cocoa powder and cocoa butter -- are made with cacao beans grown on 5- and 10-acre farms in regions of Mexico, Ecuador and now the Philippines.

The only other ingredient of his chocolates is organic sugar (evaporated cane juice) from Paraguay.

Askinosie imports 100 percent of the cacao beans grown by about 60 Davao farmers. One farmer does all the fermenting and drying to maintain consistency.

"I was attracted to Davao because of the history," Askinosie said. In 1600, the Spanish brought to the Philippines the first cacao to grow in Asia, he said.

It took him about two years of long-distance negotiations to arrange the cacao bean exports, and he made a trip to Davao, on the island of Mindanao, in August 2008.

"The Philippines has no infrastructure for exports," he said. Through his newest chocolate product, he added, "We're trying to highlight that. These farmers deserve a chance ... Hopefully this will be a beginning for them."

Chocolate lovers across Springfield and the globe know the name Askinosie Chocolate.

From New York to San Francisco, Australia to Scandinavia, buyers devour the dark and white chocolate bars and "nibs," roasted cacao beans that contain 65 times more antioxidants that broccoli, Askinosie said. "It's good for you."

Harter House Eastgate in east Springfield was once the highest-volume seller of Askinosie Chocolate, but was "overtaken" in December by the Food Emporium in New York City.

"But I'm still pulling for Harter House," Askinosie said.

In the current economy, how does a small chocolate factory sell $8 bars?

Sales had plunged in October -- a reflection of the lack of consumer confidence, he said. Then in December, sales rose 8.8 percent over December 2007, and overall fourth quarter sales were up 40 percent from the same period in 2007.

However, sales were under his target and he had to make difficult changes. He laid off three employees; others who left the factory were not replaced.

He and the staff more tightly control inventory, making only what they need, when they need it.

"We feel people still love chocolate and will splurge to buy the little pleasures ... But we have to be careful not to take that for granted, regardless of what the statistics say."

Once I got them for sure. Actually, it's more pricey than my favorite Lindt Choco with Hazel Nuts that sells at 2.79 CAD for the 100 gram. The Davao Choco sells at 8 USD for the 87 gram. That is to be expected though with the main ingredient being imported from a faraway Asian source.

CARACOLES: A unique experience from sundown to sunup
Written by Administrator

http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/3151/23324704027733644abbou1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

The Caracoles Festival of the Island Garden City of Samal, which culminated over the weekend, took more significance this year by making the whole event a celebration of the World Earth Day which also ended last week.

Their own version of the Street Mardis Gras, a concept of Department of Tourism regional director Sonia Garcia, and the competition for the most creative sea creature design were runaway crowd favorites. The event was capped with a body painting contest and the fire breathing exhibition made the event exotic yet retaining its contemporary feel. “A celebration to the beauty and bounty of the Island,” as city administrator for external affairs, Cleto Gales Jr., described the event in last Saturday’s culminating activities that lasted from sundown to sunrise at the Peñaplata Central Elementary School grounds in Barangay Peñaplata, Samal district.

Caracoles, meaning “seashells,” was first staged in Babak in 2005. This year, the event kicked off with a beach volleyball tournament at the Samal Freedom Park and exhibits of tourist destinations and display of Island products at the elementary school.

The event was capped with the Regatta or the parade of boats from Sta. Ana port to the Peñaplata wharf at 5 p.m. last Saturday. Upon their arrival, the silence was broken with yell breaks and street dancing towards the festival site. It was followed with a dance demonstration dubbed Baile del Año where all participants dressed up in their best marine creature costume.

And before the visitors could regain their breath from the assault on the senses, the band concert and street party, dubbed Musicaracoles, started and continued on until the sun peeked from behind the verdant sea.

Davaoeña vocalist plans solo album
Written by Times Editors
Wednesday, 04 February 2009 09:39

DAVAOEÑA Juris Fernandez, the vocalist of pop group M.Y.M.P., is working on her solo album which will be released by Star Records, the music arm of ABS-CBN.

The band signed up with Star Records on Friday, and Juris’ debut album will be the first in line, ABS-CBN.com reported.

Juris is aiming to make an all-original album in her solo CD, instead of covering hit songs just like what M.Y.M.P. did.

M.Y.M.P. leader and guitarist Chin Alcantara revealed he was actually the one who initially thought about Juris trying it out on her own.

“Sa akin nagsimula ‘yung idea and then nasabi namin sa manager namin. Para magamit ‘ yung boses ni Juris ibang style of music ‘di tulad nung mga nagawa niya sa M.Y.M.P.,” Chin said.

Chin and Juris are already working on the album, which is set to be released some time in March.

The plan is to come up with an all-original album instead of just covering past hits.

“Sa mga past albums namin kasi puro revivals. Nakakagawa naman kami ng original songs pero hindi masyadong nakikilala unlike ‘yung mga revivals namin. Gusto naming gumawa ng mga original songs na ire-release at ipo-promote talaga,” said Chin.

Chin said Juris is a natural songwriter.

“Kung titingnan niyo ‘yung mga albums namin mas marami siyang nasulat na kanta,” said Chin.

Juris, a daughter of a Davao-based physician, said Chin will still have big part in the side project, being the production supervisor.

“Hindi naman entirely I’ll be alone on this project kasi nandiyan pa rin si Chin. Magiging hands on siya pagdating sa lahat ng decision regarding the album,” said Juris, an Ateneo de Davao high school graduate.

M.Y.M.P. has released five studio albums and one live set under Ivory Records since 2000. While most of their hits were covered of past popular songs by other artists, the group also produced original tunes like A Little Bit, Get Me and Now.

Until the album hits the music stores, fans can see M.Y.M.P. performing every Sunday in the Sessionistas segment of ASAP together with Aiza Seguerra, Nina, Duncan Ramos, Sitti, and Richard Poon.

Just an update with Davao Choco, Goys.

Askinosie Choco phoned me this morning and told me I could cancel my order because their Davao Choco bar is available in Vancouver- the same information I needed to get from them when I tried to speak to their customer service rep a couple of nights back. So, I had them cancel the order and refund my money. I'm glad it's that handy to grab a bar or two of this choco bar afterall and not waste my money with the freight. I'll show pictures of it sooner than later, that's for sure. :)

Excerpts from article "Travel Guide at its best"

By Henrylito D. Tacio

"WE HOPE to offer our readers something fresh and a whole lot more 'Plus" travel-related topics such as trade, events, and lifestyle."

That statement comes from Arlene Dabu Foz, editor-in-chief of LeisureZcene Travel Plus magazine, who explained the objective of the newly launched publication of Friendly Alliances and Media Expressions Inc. (Fame).

So, what's the fuss about it? Nothing, except that Davao is featured in its maiden issue, which just came out recently.

"Breeze through exotic Davao and relish once more the most raved-about place made famous the world by Apodualing, the country's highest peak Mount Apo, the odd-smelling but luscious durian, and the eye-catching waling-waling," Foz wrote.

I don't know if the magazine is released in Davao but I got hold of three copies, courtesy of Jonathan M. Barrientos, the magazine's circulation officer. Actually, the reason I have three copies is I wrote an article on Davao for the said issue.

On pages 48-51, Davao is highlighted in full colors. "Glimpses of Davao" was the title of the piece although the magazine cover has this catchphrase: "A quick visit to Davao." The pictures that appeared in the magazine include the People's Park, Philippine Eagle Center, Malagos Garden, Waterfront Insular Hotel, a white sand beach, durian, waling-waling and the street dancing during the Kadayawan Festival. (Just to give you an idea, we are featuring some pictures that appeared in the magazine on this page.)

To give tourists or first timers in Davao, two maps -- of Davao City and Region XI -- were featured. Aside from the famous places to visit, the article also gave a guide on how to get to Davao (via plane, bus, or ship) and where to eat (Emerald and Jack Ridge's) and sleep (Waterfront Insular, Marco Polo Davao, Apo View, Grand Regal).

Davao is described in the article as "one of the brightest cities in the country." The article also said: "Davao is home to many cultural tribes. And in spite of progress, they have retained many of their local practices like celebrating the Kadayawan Festival."

If you want to see the Philippines, then the magazine is your first step. It's a bi-monthly publication and you have everything you want to know. I am sure more tourist destinations will be featured in forthcoming issues.........

Marco Polo donates P150T to Davao Museum

Davao Museum director, Sylvia Lorenzana

Wednesday, February 4, 2009

THE Marco Polo Davao has donated a total of P150,000 intended for research activities of the Davao Museum of History and Ethnography.

Sylvia Lorenzana, director of the Davao Museum, which is run by a private organization headed by Pat Montemayor, accepted the check from Armin Lorenzo, Marco Polo Davao Financial Controller during Wednesday's Club 888 press forum at the Marco Polo Davao.

Valentine's 2009 blog

"Funds like this help us finance our researches. We make sure that our exhibits interest people and give them some sort of satisfaction," Lorenzana told reporters.

She said the exhibits they display are more on the history of ethnic groups in Davao City, with very comprehensive write-ups.

Lorenzana said the latest research conducted by their organization is about the untold story of "Battle of Ising," a decisive battle in the liberation of Mindanao during the World War II.

"The Battle of Ising exhibit will be open at the Davao Museum at the Davao Insular Village Phase I in Lanang from March 13 to June 11," Lorenzana shared.

She said the exhibit is the product of a two-year research in local and foreign archives on the Battle of Ising and substantial first-hand accounts from the 22 living Battle of Ising veterans who were interviewed.

The exhibit chronicles the seven-day ordeal of the 130th Infantry Regiment of the 107th Division of the United States Forces in the Philippines from May 3 to May 10 of 1945 in their bid to prevent Japanese forces from occupying northern Davao and parts of Agusan.

Lorenzana said the sponsors of the exhibit are the Marco Polo Davao, Southern Philippines Foundation for the Arts, Culture & Ecology, Emcor Inc., and the Municipality of Carmen in Davao del Norte.

Davao cacao into US chocolate bars
spacer

By Zac B. Sarian

One good news is that cacao produced in Davao City has started to be exported to the United States and is being made into "Davao Philippines 77% Chocolate Bar" by the Askinosie Chocolate Company in Springfield, Missouri.

The product was unveiled at the Askinosie factory last January 30 at a party that launched the special Filipino chocolate bar, attended by Philippine Consul General Blesila Cabrera and trade representative Glenn Peñaranda. The party featured samples of the Filipino chocolate bar as well as traditional Filipino dishes and music.

The American company bought an initial seven tons of cacao beans (at $ 2,800 per ton) from growers that include Charita Puentespina who has rehabilitated an old cacao plantation. Puentespina said the consolidated shipment came from many farmers cultivating a few hectares each.

The beans, she said, are of the best quality as they have been fermented properly. One factor that has been responsible for the promotion of cacao production and proper postharvest handling is the Success Alliance project financed by the US Department of Agriculture. The project is implemented through the ACDI/VOCA, a non-governmental organization operating worldwide, promoting cacao production in selected parts of the Philippines.

Through the help of ACDI/VOCA, the Mars Cocoa Training Center was established the other year in the farm of Charita Puentespina. At the training center, improved practices in production are taught. These include the use of superior varieties, grafting techniques, proper pruning, fertilization, pest and disease control, seedling production and one of the most important, fermentation of the beans.

First, trainors were trained at the center. Then the trainors were dispatched to their own areas of operation, teaching at least 100 farmers per trainor. After training the farmers, they are next brought to the training center in Puentespina’s farm. There they will witness the various improved production practices as well as the fermentation system. So far, more than 1,200 farmers have been trained at the training center in Davao City, according to Puentespina.

DOT focuses regional tourism

By Mai Gevera

Davao City (5 February) -- Department of Tourism XI now focuses on the cultural uniqueness of the Davao region.

"Think Davao first." This was the statement of DOT XI Regional Director Sonia Garcia as she urged Dabawenyos to appreciate the historical roots and diversified growth of the region.

DOT XI is holding DUHWOW: carving the shared history and advancing the cultural uniqueness indigenous to the Davao Region, Now and Beyond.

It is a thematic exposition which will unfold in the two galleries of the Museo Dabawenyo starting this month until July.

DOT has partnered with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts in this cultural-education and heritage-promotion of the Davao region.

It aims to raise the cultural literacy among the diverse population. The exhibit will pinpoint significant windows in the shared history and common heritage of the people.

The exposition will be participated by seven mini-exhibitions to be co-anchored by a particular local government unit.

This month, the shared roots and diverse developmental routes of the undivided Davao will be showcased.

March is for the local history and the empowerment of the deputies in the most-livable Davao City.

On April, the province of Davao Oriental will show its cultural heartland, landmarks, lifestyle, and living treasures.

Davao del Norte will showcase its expanding business hub and advancing gateways in eco-cultural adventures on May along with Davao del Sur's wealth and wonders.

Compostela Valley will have its turn to show the centuries of gold on June while the culminating exhibition focuses on the present Davao region—celebrating its cultural diversity and multi-polar developments.

Ramirez: Glad to be back in Davao

WILLIAM "Butch" Ramirez took several bites of lechon biik, panga and sipped a soup of tinolang isda at Whaw Grill and Restaurant Wednesday night.

He was savoring every bit of the Davao food laid on the dinner table and was exchanging jokes with several sportswriters and photographers who were around.

"I'm happy to be back in Davao. I'm on a diet but I love Davao food so for the moment never mind that diet thing," Ramirez said with a smile.

The former chairman of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) had just planed in from Manila to officially leave the government sports body where he served for 10 years and headed straight to Whaw for a hearty dinner with sports journalists -- his friends since he was still a basketball coach in Davao and head of the city sports division.

The 58-year-old Ramirez declared that there is life after PSC and enumerated those in attendance his plans in the near future.

One of them is to seek public office.

Ramirez said he might also go back to teaching at Ateneo de Davao University and is in the process of finishing his book about Philippine sports which is going to be launched soon.

But, ever the sportsman, Ramirez said he will continue his Sports for Peace program which includes the holding of the Mindanao Friendship Games (MFG) and Mindanao Children's Games (MCG).

"My sports for peace programs will continue even if I'm no longer with the PSC. The MFG and MCG will keep going since we have partners that will help in their funding," Ramirez said.

The former PSC chief said he can also help Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte run his sports programs as a city councilor. Ramirez said he can also run for a seat in Congress.

"But then again, that is up to Mayor Duterte. He is my barometer to run for whichever position. I'm just ready to serve the Dabawenyos," he said. (CRAM with a report from MLSA)

That's actually the first thing I had in mind when I was munching it, it has that kinda taste that's close to home yet it's different because of the creamy richness to it.

Scrumptiously Mamu’s
Written by Administrator
Thursday, 05 February 2009 07:05

If you’re looking for the comforting taste of your lola’s favorite fare that she would prepare for the entire family on weekends and the cozy feel of dining right at your own home, Mamu’s is the perfect place for you.

Located along Bacaca Road, Mamu’s is a restaurant and bar owned by the Ferrazzinis –architect Elmo and wife Mylene, whose family is one of the pillars in the city’s restaurant industry.

As most of their family’s major milestones are celebrated with a feast of dishes with recipes handed down from generations, Elmo and Mylene came up with the idea of setting up their own restaurant where they can share good tasting as well nourishing meals.

Opened to the public last quarter, Mamu’s has slowly – and surely - carved its own niche of local and visiting patrons especially that the resto-bar also serves as the F&B outlet of their hotel, Anisabel Suites, situated right across the restaurant’s outdoor patio. The hotel and restaurant tandem gave the place a more “a home away from home” atmosphere.

Contributing also to Mamu’s home-like vibes is its interior design that brings to mind the cozy and relaxed feel of home. By using warm red with neutral colors and oversized chairs, it makes guests feel more snug and relaxed. Its soft lighting and mostly wooden reception and buffet counters also lend warmth to the place, as well as the shelves adorned with stoneware pots, vases and tea pots.

Mamu’s has a seating capacity of 28 persons. It also has a courtyard and smokers’ area which can seat up to 34 persons, and an intimate function room for a meeting of 8 to 10 persons.

The star of Mamu’s is, of course, their food. Among their bestsellers based on their guests’ preference are Lengua (ox tongue, a recipe from their grandparents), Pot Roast with Mushroom (choice pork tenderloin slowly cooked in a light brown sauce with fresh straw mushrooms and spices), Beef Abodo (not adobo, an original house recipe prepared with button mushrooms in a rich brown sauce topped with sautéed fresh asparagus), Tetrazzini (family recipe using white sauce, fresh mushroom straws, bacon and spices), Minestrone (a hearty tomato-based soup which is already a meal in itself, prepared with vegetables, beef cubes and spices), Shrimp Curry (house favorite using yellow curry meant for the shrimp fan) and Pote Gallego (prepared in a soupy tomato sauce using pork, chicken and chorizo bilbao with pechay leaves).

Must-try’s, as per my recommendation, also include their Special Molo Soup (special concoction of chicken strips and wrapped ground pork, misua, served with kinchay and toasted garlic on the side), Crispy Pork Binagoongan (turbo broiled pork belly smothered with shrimp paste), Shrimp Kinilaw and Baked Imbao Clams with Garlic. A good friend of mine also swears that their Spanish Sardines with Crackers is one of their best starters. Then top your filling meal with a dessert - Apple Pie ala Mode, Sans Rival or Durian Float, which I swear, is one of the yummiest this side of durian-loving Davao.
Food price range is only about PhP 100 to PhP 300 per order. But fret not as their serving is quite generous that it can be shared by 3 to 4 persons, making dining at Mamu’s conducive for family and barkada bonding.
So, if you’re still looking for a place to have lunch or dinner on a weekday, chill-out on a weekend, or for a date on Valentine’s Day, this one sips the soup in the same bowl with the metro’s best restaurants when it comes to home-cooked cuisine that so scrumptious that it nourishes both body and soul.

SPECIAL THANKS to our sweet friend and Mamu’s marketing manager Amabelle “Love2x” Tan. You can contact Mamu’s at 225.8114/305.1612. Mamu’s is open daily from 7am – 12pm (Monday-Sunday, closed on Sunday lunch). They serve breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks, and do catering for special occasions.

Sweets and Sunflower

Sanny Sweet Bakeshop, the home of Davao City’s favorite mongo dice and hopia, has transferred to its new location and building at Tionko Street.

Unveiled on January 30, the new building also houses the city’s latest hotel, the Sunflower Hotel, which will be fully operational in February.

“May konting kulang pa sa hotel. Konti na lang,” said Jimmy Ong, owner of the hotel and bakeshop.

Sanny Sweet Bakeshop was established 60 years ago by Thomas Ong and Josefina Barera, Jimmy’s grandparents. The bakeshop’s first factory was at #26 Tionko Avenue and was nurtured by his father, Jayme, who inherited the bakeshop in 1978.

Jayme put all his effort and resources to develop the business, even leaving school to concentrate on producing great-tasting Chinese delicacies. His passion and heart to cultivate the business make Sanny Sweet Bakeshop the best and premier pasalubong destination in town.

The business started without high-end equipment, machines, and tools for production. Due to perseverance and determination of Jimmy’s grandparents, Sanny Sweets withstood crises and predicaments and has become one of the best products in the city.

The products have developed from hopia and dice with popular flavors mongo and ube to tasty products like siopao and the newest hopiayaya, filled with fruit preservatives like langka, durian, and ube.

“Today, my father is not only opening the new location of Sanny Sweets but also a hotel to meet the growing need for a place to stay,” Jimmy said.

He added that the building of the hotel was conceptualized to ensure comfortable stay of visitors, foreign and local investors, government officials, and tourists here in the city.

“We made a fine place for our guests to sleep and relax,” he said.

The hotel will offer suite and ordinary rooms (rates will be available soon). A coffee shop and burger and steak house complete the hotel.
