New 7-storey hotel opens in Davao City
DAVAO CITY, Jan. 24 (PNA) -- A seven-floor hotel with over a hundred rooms opened early January this year in Davao City.
Uy Ching Siong, owner of My Hotel, said the hotel was the former Grand MenSeng Hotel located in one of the city's major thoroughfares, the San Pedro Street.
With a project cost of over P47 million, he said the renovation was focused more on the rooms and the putting in of new facilities.
“Nothing was altered with the structures because when we check on the engineering works, it had strong foundation and in good condition,” Siong said.
The invested fund covered the land acquisition, the building renovation and machine and equipment.
He said My Hotel offers affordable rates plus other amenities like free WiFi access in every room, free long distance calls to the US and Canada, free Globe line to Globe line nationwide call, free Sun to Sun call, free local call, 24 hours security camera, fire alarm system, standby generator, PABX telephone system, color TV with cable in every room, elevator, free newspaper reading, function room and restaurant.
"We wanted to give the best to our client, that is why we also invested on these modern equipment and facilities," he said.
Despite the mushrooming of other small hotels in Davao City, he said they are optimistic of their hotel investment as they bank more of getting more clients with their location just within the heart of the city.
My Hotel is very near the San Pedro Catheral, the City Hall, San Pedro Police Station, banks and major stores.
He said occupancy rate is still fluctuating and that they are satisfied with what they have, although they need to promote the hotel either in Manila or Cebu.
This year, he also said they will expand the operations of their three other businesses -- Davao Imports Distributors, Davao Farms Corporation and Davao Builders Corporation in Agusan del Sur, and they will continue to put their presence in the major cities of Mindanao. (PNA)

Isn't this near the old Lyric and Crest theatres?
I'm dating myself but Lyric is where I saw the Bruce Lee movies. :ohno::)
Back then Men Seng charged P50 a day for a room.
I was back in Davao last August. A friend of mine who was from Manila and I drove around. He was promoting the Villar Cup billiard event.
I told him, " pare pansin mo, downtown dito pero ala tambak?"
I hope the new hotel does well.

Cacao post harvest best practices
clinic conducted in Malagos
Success Alliance 2, led by ACDIVOCA in partnership with United States Department of Agriculture, CocoaPhil the World Cocoa Foundation and MARS Inc. (the largest chocolate manufacturer in the world), conducted the first Cacao Post Harvest Best Practices Clinic on January 28-29 in Malagos Garden Resort, Baguio District, Davao City.
Fifty cacao post harvest practitioners and stakeholders, coming from all over the Philippines (farmers, traders, processors, academicians, technicians, government/LGU representatives) actively engaged themselves in the cacao clinic “checkup” and “consultation” rendered by the cacao experts/technicians from MARS, Inc. and ACDIVOCA.
Nicholas Richards, Chief of Party, ACDI-VOCA , explained that the Cacao Post Harvest Clinic aimed to engage the cacao practitioners to bring their cacao beans for “check-up”, get cacao farm practices and learn new things/best practices from the ‘cacao doctors/experts.”
After the clinic, the cacao practitioners are expected pro-actively, to apply learnings and improved practices in cacao post harvest practices in their respective farms/communities.
Smilja Lambert, Cocoa Sustainability Research manager, MARS, Inc. gave a comprehensive/detailed presentation on the processes and best practices in cacao processing (drying and fermentation) “There is no chocolate flavor, if there is no fermentation process in cacao. Sun drying is the best for the good quality of cacao and the first 70-90 hours of drying is most important,” she emphasized to the practitioners.
Peter Van Grinsven, Sustainability Cocoa Supply Manager, MARS Inc., informed the practitioners on the bright opportunities and prospects in the cacao local and global market. He emphasized the Philippines’ competitive and advantages in these markets if the Philippines will be consistent in producing best quality fermented cacao beans.
Josephine Ramos, program manager, Cocoa-Phil, explained the Philippine National Standard (PNS) for Cacao, with emphasis on cacao bean sampling and grading.
During the “clinic” the practitioners did hands on exercises on cacao weighing, sorting, measuring moisture content and bean cutting to ttest chocolate contents. The practitioners were coached in these exercises by Richards, Peter Cruz, MARS Cocoa Development Center (MCDC) manager, and Hidayat, an expert cacao practitioner from Sulawesi, Indonesia.
The highlight of the Post Harvest Clinic is the launching of the “Sikwate Challenge”. Each practitioner-participant brought their respective “Tableya” products/produce and subjected them for “taste tests” by the panel of experts on cacao. Out of the 12 types of “tableya” tasted/tested, the sikwate or tableya from the Subasta Integrated Farmers MPC of Subasta, Calinan, Davao City and the tableya from Perpetua Lagoc, tableya processor from Tugbok District, Davao City, won the best tableya awards.
In closing three participants gave their impressions and improvements/changes they promised to do after the clinic. “The clinic will help us traders/processors to identify high quality cacao beans and in the long term help us become successful exporters”. “I will go back home with the intention to re-echo the best practices I learned on cacao fermentation and processing to the farmers of Sorsogon,” noted by Melinda Yee, Agriculturist II, LGU Sorsogon City. Likewise, Raymundo Monroy, Municipal Agriculturist from Miag-ao, Iloilo, was grateful to the organizers of the “Clinic” for the useful learning in cacao fermentation and processing which he will share to the small cacao farmers of Iloilo. And Forester Angela Marmito of Nabunturan, Comval said “As a trader/buyer, I now have practical know how on buying good cacao beans which I could share to the farmers and I will advocate to the farmers not to sell bad beans.”
Edward David, president of CocoaPhil Foundation in his closing message, hopes that the SA 2 bring the PH Clinic all over the country so that everybody will have better understanding of the best quality well fermented cacao beans. And ultimately the Philippines will be the leader in high quality fermented cacao beans that command good price in the local and global cacao market.

Now
PHILIPPINE Eagle Pag-asa celebrates his 16th birthday today. The kuya (older brother) of the Philippine Eagles was the first of its kind to be bred and hatched in captivity at the Philippine Eagle Center (PEC) in Malagos, Baguio District, Davao City.
The dedication and effort invested to eagle conservation eventually paid off with Pag-asa's birth in 1992. His birth came after years of study and research with the great Philippine Eagles at the foothills of Mt. Apo in Baracatan, Toril, Davao City.
Sun.Star Network Online's coverage of the Sinulog 2008 Festival
Sixteen years since Pag-asa's birth, the Philippine Eagle Foundation's (PEF) efforts to save the Philippine eagles have led to favorable outcomes. As PEF is in constant process of learning effective means of conserving the great Philippine Eagle, it paved the way to success as the center eventually produced its 22nd chick on December 7, 2007.
In line with Pag-asa's birthday celebration, the Foundation also anticipates another experimental release of Kagsabua, a juvenile Philippine Eagle rescued from Brgy. Kaatuan, Lanatapan, Bukidnon.
The eagle was turned over by Felix Mirasol, Pasu-DENR Bukidnon, Daniel Somera deputy Pasu, and company to the PEF retrieval team on September 7, 2006.
Kagsabua had a minor injury -- a bullet wound graze, on its neck area. X-ray result showed an airgun pellet lodged between the skin and the skull at the back of the bird's head. Fortunately, no skull fracture was seen.
"This release is a reintroduction of Kagsabua to the wild," PEF executive director Dennis Salvador noted.
"We hope that hunting and deforestation can be effectively stopped so that the eagles and other species will continue to thrive and benefit future generations," Salvador said.
PEF deputy director for Breeding Conservation Doming Tadeña and Eddie Juntilla, Pag-asa's caretaker, continue to blow the candles of hope from Pag-asa's birthday cake.
The center invites everyone to participate to this momentous event for Pag-asa and the rest of its kind at the PEC.

Travel Picks: Top 10 destinations for chocolate lovers
Fri - Feb 6, 2009 7:27AM EST
SYDNEY (Reuters Life!) - As Valentine's Day approaches, travel website IgoUgo.com has come with a list of top destinations for people whose main love is chocolate.
This list is compiled by IgoUgo.com editors and is not endorsed by Reuters:
1. Oaxaca, Mexico
In Oaxaca, chocolate is used not only as a food in chocolate corn, chocolate sauce and so on but also as a popular drink. For their fix, locals frequent Chocolate Mayordomo, a shop with two downtown locations. A trip to Oaxaca can be combined with a stop in Mexico City to see Nestle's factory and chocolate museum.
2. Ghana
Ghana wants to spread the word that it grows great cocoa, so its throwing a party -- National Chocolate Day and Cocoa Day with the theme "consume more cocoa for good health."
3. Hershey, Pennsylvania, United States
Hershey's Chocolate World in the self-proclaimed "sweetest place on Earth" with a factory-tour ride in which children especially enjoy Chocolate World's singing cows.
4. Philippines
In the north, Baguio is a foodie's dream destination, famous for its Chocolate de Batirol, named after the clay pot in which chocolate is heated. Down in Bohol, a main attraction is the Chocolate Hills - not technically edible but a must-see. Further south is Davao and its cacao fields, where every meal seems to end with a decadent dessert.
5. Zurich, Switzerland
Nowhere does Swiss chocolate taste better than in the confiseries of Zurich. Lindt, Sprungli, Teuscher, Suchard; the only hard part is deciding where to begin.
6. Bocas del Toro, Panama
Sample cacao flesh straight from the source on the Bocas del Toro archipelago and wash it down with plenty of cocoa. Research suggests that this habit of Panama's Kuna people keeps their hearts healthy. Another bonus effect of local cocoa is the presence of hiking trails on what were once cacao plantations.
7. Cologne, Germany
In the chocolate capital of Germany, the Chocolate Museum is much lauded for its historical exhibits, family fun, Rhine River views, huge chocolate fountain, and, of course, free samples.
8. New York, NY
New Yorkers know chocolate: how to make it, how to sell it, how to show it. Visitors can take a chocolate tour and attend a chocolate show, and, sometimes, sleep in a chocolate hotel room. You can also find some of the world's highest-quality sweets there, including the hot chocolate served at cocoa master Jacques Torres' shops.
9. Bruges, Belgium
A great spot for chocolate lovers which includes the Chocolate Line shop where the liqueur-filled chocolates come highly recommended.
10. Barcelona, Spain
Barcelona has been breeding leading chocolatiers for centuries, making it a natural place for a museum celebrating the substance. The Museu de la Xocolata features chocolate in every form, from ornate sculptures to hot chocolate. Afterwards burn off the treats on a self-guided tour of the city's high-end chocolate boutiques.

Sana naman wag alisin ni CebuPac yung DVO-SG, kahit once a week man lang na flight itira nila, ok na tayo dun. Last year kasi 3x a week sila pero nung Jan2009 inalis nila yung Thurs flight to SG and Wed flight to Davao, so naging 2x a week na lang.

This morning my sister told me about how the newspaper and radio is talking about today's release of Shawn's new 77% bar "made from shade-grown, chemical-free Trinitario beans grown by farmers in Davao."
I wonder what other underutilized terroirs are waiting to export beans?
PS: The newspaper article says that he imports 100% of the cacao beans grown by about 60 Davao farmers. Is there any way to estimate how many pounds that would be?
PPS: I called, and it's about 7 tons. Next question, what's the price per pound?

I heartily agree, the Davao bar is delicious! Thank you, Casey, for describing all those flavors so well... I have to say that even my 4 yr old son (who loves "Moo Cow" chocolate -- what he calls milk chocolate) really likes the Davao (yes, he's been asking for a "letter chocolate" square daily...Askinosie letters on the bar)! For me, it's my clear favorite of the Askinosie so far (and I've enjoyed the others quite a bit).
By the way, here's the press release dated Jan 26...

Hot off the presses, this chocolate was released just days ago, so my choco-o-lot date is 1/15/09, very fresh. Here is a chocolate that is near a masterwork. Close to epitomizing what fine chocolate is all about, a true evolution of flavor unfolding across the palate – reminiscent of forests, affecting your body – flavors changing moods, then back again. Great length on the finish, with a lingering note of blackberry.
aroma: plum, cherry, oak, apricot, honey, leather, rain, fresh grass, mist, sea breeze, rose, lilac, raspberry, sassafras, acorn, peanut butter, mango, blackberry, pear, cafe au lait, autumn leaves, wine, roots, ash, smoke, banana, birch bark, espresso
flavor: blackberry, honey, mint, caramel, caraway, strawberry, melon, coffee, gold dust, seashells, coconut shells, ocean, chalk, arrowroot, tangerine, brownie, macadamia, deep forest, lemon zest, mineral water, baking soda, licorice
finish: peanut butter and strawberry jam, fresh dirt, olive oil, watercress, black pepper, oatmeal raisin bars, bee pollen, carrot, lemonade, Burgundy, vodka, champagne, peanut shells, watermelon, cinnamon, tequila, orange juice, strong mocha

I am now based in Manila after working abroad for several years. Just a week ago I visited Davao City and drove around the city. I was amazed how efficient the traffic system of the city is - ang galing! All within 30 minutes reach if you know the alternative roads.

During our recent lunch outing at Mamu’s Resto Bar, Feyma and I got a chance to check out Anisabel Suites, which is part of the same complex ast Mamu’s. Anisabel is positioning itself as a higher end place to stay in Davao, and it shows.
Anisabel is quite a nice place, and I feel that you can stay there and be quite comfortable. It is in a quiet part of town too, so you probably won’t have to worry about too much noise in the evening either!
Anisabel is located on Bacaca Road, adjacent to Rolling Hills and El Rio Subdivisions.

A common saying in the Davao region is “Islands to the Highlands,” meaning that in Davao, we have activites ranging from island hopping to exploring the mountains. These things are so close together that you can do both in the same day! I mean, honestly, you could stay overnight at a resort on Samal Island, have breakfast at that resort, and have lunch in the mountains on the mainland of Mindanao! It’s true. Wake up in the warm weather on an island in the Gulf of Davao, and by afternoon be in the cool climate of Bukidnon.
Today, Feyma and I took a day off from work to enjoy a little such adventure. We didn’t make it to the Highlands, but we did have a nice day on Samal Island. We already knew how to get to Samal Island, because we go there a lot, so today we took the RoRo Ferry to Samal with some friends. A longtime reader of some of my sites, Emmy and her husband, Willy are visiting Davao from the USA right now. We met them over the weekend, and really enjoyed their company.
Ronnie, Willy and Emee on Samal
Ronnie, Willy and Emee on Samal
Over the weekend, when we met, the conversation turned to Samal Island. Willy is a diver, and has had quite a lot of experiences diving around Samal and Talikud Islands. We mentioned to Willy and Emmy that Feyma knows a number of places where you can buy a piece of land on Samal. Emmy’s eyes lit up with a little sparkle, and Willy seemed interested too. So, today, we took Emmy and Willy (and a friend of theirs who is also vacationing here, Ronnie) over to Samal for some fun in the sun and a look at some pieces of land that were available. We looked at mountaintop view land and beachfront property too. Willy kind of fell in love with the beach property that we showed them.
Feyma and Emmy at SpiraleAfter touring the island over the morning, we headed back to the City, and went out for lunch at Spirale Ristorante. As usual, great food! Willy had a nice Pizzata, Emmy enjoyed some pasta, Feyma had Canneloni, Ronnie had a Pizza and I had a great plate of Carbonara Pasta. It was a super delicious lunch, and Spirale is always a favorite of ours.
Well, as I said, we didn’t make it to the mountains today, but I do love going to Buda and to Bukidnon itself. Next time, na lang.

btw, im new. thanks for the welcome.. :)
i am guessing that they are changing their schedule or maybe discontinuing the flights. but i think discontinuing the flights is a bad move as this is going to be summer time already and alot of people will be flying.
but to tell you frankly even the flights out of manila and cebu are experiencing low yield as of this time.
but there was a post of arianspace a while back and he said that the load factors of the the international flights out of davao that was made by cebu pac was 70%. maganda naman yang load factor na yan ah.

http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/6826/mamibt6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
One typical Saturday night, I and the tropa went out to sing our hearts content at a bar near venue compound. The drinking started around 10 pm and ended at 3 in the morning, not minding the so called LIQUOR BAN here in Davao. We were up for our last bottle, till finally all of us agreed to call it a night. We paid the bills, and decided to have a little walk for some fresh air, while others are vomiting near by alleys, kidding each other about "HUBOG NA KA BAI?" (are you drunk?).
Along Ponciano Street, near Rotunda, a store was still open late at morning, all the tables were filled up with bystanders and taxi drivers wanted to have a sip of coffee and that aromatic smell of the soup, i thought at first, was La Paz Batchoy. Much to my curiosity, and soreness of my stomach, I invited them to have a coffee and to grab the everlasting Extra Hot Pancit Canton (yum yum). Though the shop is not really the type of place my friends usually sip their coffee and nibble delights, they have no choice but to eat what the store has to offer.
I ordered Mami and Peanut Butter Bunwich. Kinda odd, but I find it interesting. The rest had their cup of coffee. The noodle soup comes cheap but to my surprise, the 12-peso noodle made my taste buds twist. It's really good. The soup tasted better than Chowkings. It soothes not only my stomachs, but my palate too. Then I told everyone that `twas good, and all hurriedly asked for a serving.
The soup consists of;
Batchoy (a thin, fresh egg noddles)
cooked ground pork
spring onions
fried garlic
boiled egg
pork cracklings
and pork stock
You can add a whole boiled or fresh egg for an additional fee. And Peanut Butter Bunwich is actually good too. I didn't say that because peanut butter is my favorite, but it's home made. And less sugary.
Since then, everytime we went out for a drink (a case of Redhorse actually), we do get to drop by to Goyong's Mami House or "Hampaslupa Cafe" (That's what a friend of mine called it when he visited the place). And if you're "eewwing" while reading this one thinking that you're that socialite enough not to set foot in this kind of place, think again. I have friends who happen to own a multi-million businesses and haciendas who enjoyed eating here.
Goyong's Mami House is located along Ponciano Street, Just in front of Rotunda and BDO.

not in the case of davao city i bet you will agree with me. jollibbe is not a good indicator as it is not the only foodstore that serves quick chicken meals or packd meals. there are local versions of jollibee and mcdonalds in davao that also draws significant market share

Definitely! Why would a company hire someone who is from another place if there are enough qualified people in such place.
It's only natural for others to work on far places if it's beneficial to them like a much higher salary. Me, I wouldn't have gone abroad if what i'm getting at now I can also earn anywhere in the Philippines. It's really a no-brainer...

MtApoStandard February 9th, 2009, 11:45 AM natatawa ako habang nagbabasa ng thread nila. ano kaya gusti nila maachieve sa mga ratio ratio nila? hehehehe... just askin...
it's better to compute how many people will each jollibee store serve....say divide the total no. of stores to the city population (the least)... so kahit kaunti lang ang store but the store-to-customer ratio is high.
^^
for ex.
City A
Population = 400,000, Jollibee stores = 5
then 1 store serves 80,000 customers
City B
Population = 100,000, Jollibee stores = 2
then 1 store serves 50,000 customers
so, City B has a better store-to-cutomer ratio
are you referring to gearx opinion? i dont think this a accurate gauge. are the 50,000>> actual customers? is the figure have uniform capacity to afford a say burger. are these uniformly share the same fancy or taste for jollibee only, etc. if not, then jollibee does not represent for accurate stat economic indicator

Virtual Assistance from UK-based firm Catch FridayVirtual Assistance from UK-based firm Catch Friday
CatchFriday offer a Business Service that is at the heart of the family
GREENFORD, ENGLAND, February 09, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Why go overseas to India for low prices, when you can get them at home, from UK based Catch Friday who stamp Quality on their product, by delivering a home-based service, that takes on the big boys.
Perry, their Managing Director was available for comment this week, and our reporter met him on Monday during the blizzard that swept across the UK from Russia, with the cold wind.
Perry runs the virtual services from his office in London, and employs in the Philippines through homeshoring, also known as homesourcing. CatchFriday runs virtual assistants who are home-based and highly motivated, and also partners a call center in Davao.
CatchFriday's clients' call in for research work, admin, web services, programming and database cleansing to name a few. The advantage of the service is that it is available 24 hours a day, during the working week, and is not affected by extreme weather.
If clients have a deadline, Catch Friday can normally do it in the first 24 hours after payment, and in the testimonials on their web site, real people comment.
Perry added that he wanted to bring a personal approach into the marketplace that focused on the needs of clients, and a quick turn around.
By far the most clients who use us, hail from the USA, I think at heart they like our virtuals assistants who speak with an American accent, compared with VAs in other countries.
Catch Friday delivers to the client's requirements, and that is one reason that we have loyal clients that keep on coming back.

daot ang tube? can that even happen? i know this was raised here and in the city council. i mean why are these passengers be deprived of this convenience and subjected to go up/down the staicase and walk through the tarmac under weather conditions. what about the elderlies, pregnants and parent cradling kids and those with fragile medical conditios. i mean whats the difference with what they pay for fare with other cebu pacific air passengers that were hooked to bridge? arent they paying same low cost seats equivalent amount from where theer flights originated. its insulting imo. why cant there be counter measure from the city council or airport management impose against the airline. say tax the mobile staircase quadruple the amout ceb pacif is refusing to pay/hour. and tax them 5x the $15/hr for use of ground passageways of the terminal for airlines deperting and arriving passengers. i mean look there is also maintenance cost for that space of terminal if used on a daily basis. impose a restrictive tax that will force them to use $15/hour tube. all in the name of fundraising

para lang gud naay ikahambug, lisod man nang wala tay ika garbo nga "realidad" so mangita jud ug paagi na makaingon tag we have this or that blah blah
Wadaboy February 9th, 2009, 02:48 PM Ahhh.... lahi man diri sa Davao kay dili kaayo kusog ang Jolibee. Mas daghan ang mo-patroniza sa McDo (that includes me) based lang sa akong observation ha don't take it seriously.

dinabaw February 10th, 2009, 03:39 AM PAL international golf match
to boost Davao City’s economy
Davao City will play host to over a thousand international golfers during the upcoming Philippine Airlines (PAL) Interclub tournament this month.
Lawyer Domingo Duerme, PAL senior assistant vice president for Mindanao and tournament committee chair, said about 1,300 golfers from the Philippines, USA, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Singa-pore, Japan, and China are expected to join PAL’s annual golf event.
The golfing elders will hold the 22nd Seniors championship on February 19 to 22, followed by the 62nd Men’s regular event on February 25 to 28.
The ceremonial tee off will be held on February 18 for the Seniors at Rancho Palos Verdes and February 24 for the Men’s regular at the Apo Golf.
Duerme said the international golf tourney will boost the city’s economy with the presence of international visitors expected to reach over 2,000, including guests.
The golfing events will be held at the Apo Golf and Country Club and the Rancho Palos Verdes Golf and Country Club.
It is the second time the city is hosting the PAL Interclub tournament.
The golfing event was born at the Wack Wack Golf and Country Club in Manila on January 31 to February 1, 1947 with 100 players from six clubs, Duerme said. Judy Quiros

Correct. Even if they claim to have the most number of malls in the world, oks lang. All I know is that there will be three malls to be constructed in Davao City within the year. Alam naman ng mga tao dito kung ano yung totoo eh.

We understand that these people are hungry to have something to be proud of kay nihit ang pwede nilang ikasigarbo.lisod baya nang envious ka sa paglambo sa uban and feeling left out ka (like si vice ganda) So mu try jud ug level maski pinugos. So i accept na lang nato nga mentality nila and let them be, concentrate na lang ta sa atoa,
