na post na ba to? 870 million project for a terminal building is whoooooaaa.

Barangay Sasa sees bright prospects with expanded Sasa Port
February 14, 2009

Barangay Captain Mario C. Reta of Barangay Sasa sees the Sasa Port
expansion to bring substantial income and to trigger business
developments in his barangay.

In an interview, Reta was anticipating of more investors to locate
in Barangay Sasa now that the Sasa Port can accommodate more cargo
and passengers vessels.

He was also expecting more people to find jobs with the newly
completed Sasa Port expansion and that this development would become
a factor for small businesses to sprout such as eateries and
restaurants.

He has thought of developing a two-storey Sasa Public Market which
would provide ample space for restaurant at its second floor.

He is also looking at the prospect for his barangay to rake
substantial taxes in addition to the P17 million revenues that is
enjoying from the Internal Revenue Allotment and from local taxes.

Aside from the P396,089,218 Sasa Port Expansion Project, Barangay
Sasa will also be hosting the P870 million Passenger Terminal
Building project which is of world-class quality.

Along with the passenger terminal building, the project will include
the development of parking areas and roll-on roll-off ramp, a
greeter building, and a gate complex.

In his talk with President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in yesterday's
inauguration of Sasa Port expansion project, Reta conveyed to the
President of his family's gratitude that the national government has
poured in development to the land that they donated.

The five-hectare land on which the buildings of the Philippine Ports
Authority, the Bureau of Customs, the Philippine Coast Guard
Authority and the stevedoring companies stand were once owned by the
Reta family until their donation to the Government.

WawaY[625]
February 15th, 2009, 06:31 AM

WawaY[625]
February 15th, 2009, 06:46 AM

well, let's see na lang ano ang plan nila for that...ang samal bridge I think malabo pa yan. walang support coming from the 2 cities involved. and somebody well-connected, moneyed and influential is going to be affected as per rumors. itong samal bridge is the ultimate to see is to believe government project for me.

Maybe preparing itself for world class luxury liners servicing international passengers? Kasi having good infrastructures are necessary to lure not just tourists but also tourism investors as there are plans to link Davao and Samal to the beaches of Davao Oriental with BOI considering Davao Oriental's stretch of 400 km white sand beachline, and that's only one of the other potentials, not to mention the known tourism attractions of the city and world heritage sites Mt. Apo & Mt. Hamiguitan, waterfalls, perhaps even a new siargao or hawaii-like surfing turf (with some areas facing the pacific ocean) they could discover sa lapad ba naman ng beachline stretch that they will promote.

^^ I think the country could have done these even years before just as other neighboring countries had done with theirs as the potentials and attractions are already there, had it not been for the 'terrorism' propaganda and overhyped 'insurgency' issues against Davao and the island in general, pero Dabawenyos should be making the next move, it seems delayed already if until now nothing will still be started.

imo PPA is trying to boast their lagging passenger seats kaya they're trying to revive the lost opportunity by injecting investments thru new terminals.btw i the GenSan sea terminal is much bigger and could cost billion of pesos.

its a welcome project for me:D but if the budget will stall more important planned projects in the ports modernisation upgrade such as installation of container cranes, etc,(seeing davao port as more of container port than a passenger ferry port) imo, the government falters yet again in the prioritisation of budget allocation:project implementations.

its a welcome project for me:D but if the budget will stall more important planned projects in the ports modernisation upgrade such as installation of container cranes, etc,(seeing davao port as more of container port than a passenger ferry port) imo, the government falters yet again in the prioritisation of budget allocation:project implementations.

yeah IMO crane first bago ito

Hi, IMO it may be in coordination with BOI plan to promote the 400kms stretch of white sand beachline of Davao Oriental for tourism. To entice investors, quality facilities and infrastructures need to be improved and constructed, and a passenger port with international standards for foreign and domestic tourists alike in line with the government's Ro-Ro linkages between Davao City-Samal-Davao Oriental would be a practical necessity. Otherwise the BOI project would be rendered inefficient if even a decent passenger ferry terminal won't be in place.

BOI to promote Davao Oriental's white sand beaches
By Mai Gevera

Davao City (22 January) -- Seeing the big potential of Davao Oriental's 400 kilometer white sand shoreline, the Bureau of Investment (BOI) is planning to boost the tourism sector of the said province this year.

BOI chief Gil Dureza said during yesterday's Club 888 Forum at Marco Polo Davao that many are wondering why investors have been hesitant to develop Davao Oriental's white sand beaches.

Dureza said that the wide stretch of beaches is comparable to the popular beaches in Boracay. The place also offers excellent dive sites and other beach sports like skimboarding and surfing.

"This year, we will definitely hold a roadshow to be held in Boracay getting the top ten resort owners as our audience and this will open up better opportunities for the province," he said.

Not just tapping the local market, BOI has also thought of holding a second roadshow in Bali, Indonesia this time to capture foreign investors.

Davao Oriental is strategically located in the easternmost part of the region XI. It ranges about 189.30 in kilometers from its common boundaries. It is bounded by the Pacific Ocean in the East, Davao Province in the West, Agusan del Sur and Surigao del Sur in the North and Davao Gulf and Celebes Sea in the South. Its proximity to the Pacific justifies the efforts of grooming Davao Oriental as the gateway to the Pacific.

One of the popular white sand beach is the Dahican Beach in the city of Mati. It is known for its tranquil white sand beach and gentle blowing breeze from the Pacific Ocean. The place is ideal for windsurfing, and skimboarding. (PIA)

Duda lang nako basin sa Paranaque or Cavite area ni and that wide road may be the the starting point of M. Manila's coastal road, or maybe not in Philippines, basin foreign like vietnamese city kay gamay ra kaayo mga sakyanan wala'y jeepney traffic and it seems the urban planning looks french style with a wide avenue and crisscrossing streets that meet in the middle. Ambot lang pud.

sayang din ang back kick sa passenger terminal na yan... just kidding..

well, let's see na lang ano ang plan nila for that...ang samal bridge I think malabo pa yan. walang support coming from the 2 cities involved. and somebody well-connected, moneyed and influential is going to be affected as per rumors. itong samal bridge is the ultimate to see is to believe government project for me.
with davao samal ferry service registering 1.5 million passenger traffic over 2008, development change is hindrance to greed future of political careers and business interest of friends. momentum of positive progress and development are alway threatened. davao city cant afford a single missed opportunity, imo

15 reasons to visit Davao
By maxkgates

Davao city is my favourite city in the Philippines, I am from Ireland and have visited there many times, I am fascinated by this lovely place, how can I put it in simple words, it is simply paradise, I have friends in Malaybalay, this is a mountain town around 3 hours away in the bus, the last time I went there from Davao it was 300 peso around 6 dollars, Malaybalay is another town I would recommend , I believe its the Pineaplle capital of the Philippines.

O.K let me get started on Davao, why would I recommend Davao? my main reasons are listed below,

1. The place is so cheap, beer is the cheapest in the Philippines, hence cost of going out cost a lot less.
2. The food is very cheap, you can get great seafood, including lobster at the fraction of the cost of other cities in the Philippines.
3. The air is very clean, the taxis use gas, very good for the environment, also there is no smoking in public, sorry to you smokers out there (well I am not that sorry, no more smelly clothes and effects to my health from your cigarettes ,as Davao is a smoke free city, you can only smoke in your own premises, you can not smoke in hotels.
4. City is really safe, I think it has one of the lowest crime rates in Asia.
5. Fruit is plentiful and cheap: The Durian fruit is magnificant, I believe Davao is the Durian capital of the world, Durian fruit has a smelly reputation some describe it as smelling like dirty socks, but I love it, the Durian shakes are magnificant.
6. Taxis are cheap too, they don’t overcharge (o.k there is a minimal risk, so, so low compared to anywhere else I have ever visited)
7. The weather is warm and tropical, great for the beach, it can rain buckets too though.
8. The town never sleeps, places open 24 hours to buy DIm sum or some convenience items.
9. Also the place does not feel like a city ( Davao is one of the largest cities in the world , land area size)
10. Easy to get to in the Philippines, lots of planes service Davao from all over the Philippines.
11. People are so friendly, really friendly people, their smile will light up your face.
12. Beaches are great, Samal Island and Paradise beach, I very much recommend to visit there.
13. Nightlife is very good and safe, yes and more cheap beer, I recommend the Venue, its my favourite place.
14. Great shopping, the malls are really big here but I suppose that’s like everywhere else in the Philippines.
15. Great Festivals such as the Davao city Octoberfest beer festival and the Kadayawan festival.

Now that’s my 15reasons to visit Davao, if you can get more please do.

DABAWENYOS love to drink coffee as manifested by the sprouting of several coffee shops in almost every corner of Davao City. It has become a thriving business.

Inspired by the result of a study that the country's coffee drinkers continue to grow at an average of six percent yearly, a man in uniform has decided to enter the ever-changing specialty coffee market -- setting up Chicco Di Caffe on Roxas Avenue in Davao City.

Fueled by his passion for coffee and to establish a profitable and service-oriented business after his retirement from the service, Abraham C. Rojas has decided to venture into opening a specialty coffee shop.

But in today's competitive retail specialty coffee market, one has to embark on unique ways to make his coffee products different and standout from the rest.

To make sure he has the best coffee products to offer to Dabawenyos, Rojas attended formal classes to learn what it takes to be successful in this highly competitive market.

He enrolled with American Barista and Coffee School based in Portland, USA where he was exposed to a broad range of coffee-related equipment and products.

For six days, he worked with coffee from different roasters and was also exposed to a wide range of associated products.

"The training was so rigid. We have to roast coffee, which is integral in producing a savory cup of coffee," Rojas said.

The school has set the standard for education and training in specialty coffee industry. Entrepreneurs from all over the world have attended classes at American Barista to learn what it takes to be successful in today's competitive retail specialty coffee market.

In addition to teaching entrepreneurs the fundamentals of opening a specialty coffee business, the school allows students to sample the best the industry has to offer.

"We attended sessions on the comprehensive coffee business start-up program, barista training, latte art and specialty classes that include equipment maintenance and marketing," he said.

According to Wikipedia, a barista is a professional who is highly skilled in coffee preparation.

All these he learned from a prestigious coffee institution, are now being offered at Chicco Di Caffee. But Rojas has assured coffee drinkers that their prices are affordable, although the coffee shop is using imported coffee beans from Italy.

"I considered it an advantage," he said of his formal training on coffee preparation. "This makes Chicco different from all other coffee shops in the city."

But aside from quality coffee blends, Chicco, which has its soft opening on Feb. 8, also offers a homey and comfy atmosphere. It is charmingly-furnished, making it a relaxing place for coffee connoisseur and self-confessed addicts, who make coffee drinking a favorite pastime and engaging social activity.

For its specialty, Chicco will soon offer a unique blend of coffee which Roxas called mangosteen-passion fruit coffee. Watch for it.

While enjoying your coffee at Chicco, you will be provided with information on the coffee blend you have chosen, based on modules Rojas had acquired from American Barista and Coffee School. A television monitor is set up at the shop to show preparation for your coffee and any information about it.

"It actually coffee education. We want our customers aware and informed about the coffee they preferred," Rojas said.

Although he has the direct hand in the operation of the coffee shop, Rojas said his family, who runs the Kreious Corp, owns the establishment.

Chicco Di Caffe will have its grand opening on Feb. 28.

Goin' Places

IT was oft recommended... a Japanese restaurant in front of the SSS featuring a cook who used to be the cook in Tadakuma, the original one along Jacinto Extension.

And so the food trio sought it out and saw... a lighted sign with incomprehensible characters.

Conversations goes like this, "Ayun!"

"Alin diyan? Anong pangalan?"

"Errr... hindi ko mabasa eh..."

As described, it's in front of SSS Building along J.P. Laurel Avenue, Davao City. It's at the end of the first row of shops if you're arriving from downtown. The name: Yakitori Naniwa-ya.

We ordered miso soup, mabo tofu, mixed tempura, quail eggs with bacon, and gyoza. And yes, that order is too much for three people.

The waitress served as appetizers, three small sauce plates of... kimchi.
And then it was food, food and more food. Interestingly, the offerings are more malasa than regular Japanese food and I can taste some dashes of umami there.

The gyoza is really good. Since it was just Trish and Deng who ordered miso soup, then I will have to rely on their comments: good, but too much.

The mabo tofu is really good; I just wish I wasn't on a continuing diet. I would have appreciated it more had I allowed myself to eat a lot of rice. That's because the sauce is good, you'd want to mix it with your rice. The mixed tempura tastes like tempura... but then, how can you go wrong with tempura? And the quail eggs with bacon looked and tasted like quail eggs with bacon.

On the shelves behind the cashier are several bottles of strange-looking drinks, including sake, and something made of soya according to the cashier. We couldn't figure out which is which since they all were in Japanese characters.

On the wall are colored printouts of their specialties, and inside the toilet is an invitation to "have fun and make the night!!!"

The computer printout on a white letter-size paper read (copied verbatim, mistakes, exclamation marks, and all):

"Bored and need drink to cheer your night!!!

"Sing along is the bext combination for that!!!

"Visit at Jesh (crashed out and placed inside parentheses and written above it in marker pen is Erban's) Videoke.

"A Philippine style videokaraoke at affordable price.

"Lets have fun and make the night!!!"

Ok ang SM especially their staff, ang dili nako ganahan ang traffic design sa ilang building, their escalators on the sides suddenly are at dead end with most likely only moviegoers servicing it (if the design intends to 'force' customers to stroll through the shops along the hall from cinema to main area then it probably failed). Their escalators don't seem welcoming kay nakatalikod or layo sa customers, as if the design is saying that they use the stairs first kay para dili dali madaut escalators. The department store and appliance stores are also abruptly divided which in my opinion disrupts the focus of the customers' psyche. It seemed the design treats their 'provincial' branches, as such, provincial, when Davao deserves more than that. Kung sa traffic design, SM did not meet my preference. I hope they won't do the same thing with their next SM Davao branch.

But as for the SM Davao staffs, they are ok.

The SM facade is ok with me (for the moment, but even that is getting to be obsolete with the newer trends), it's the traffic design that I'm referring to. Syempre SM will not be lost in the following because it is established and many people patronize it (someone I encountered living in the northern region even had to take the hassle of traveling over SM as it's a reputed premier shopping destination). But IMO they could have done better (and perhaps even more succesful than presently are) if only the traffic design was well planned. Take for example, a customer parking at the left side would have to traverse further if he plans to buy something at their department store on the ground floor. Their activity area also gobbled prime commercial spaces. It may be subtle, but it may be the reason why, despite SM's established reputation, it's been said that another local homegrown mall had supposedly earned more than SM ( I wonder if someone would confirm this). SM should put higher standards not just of their services (the staffs & products may be ok) but even with the quality of their structures (traffic design included) to be built here in Davao, and not just pattern it after their modular 'provincial' branches as they do in other parts of the country.

sa example sighted, I think most malls are like that...that's why most people park where it is most convenient. :)

regarding sales...you are probably referring to GMall, w/c is understandable because it is located at the heart of the City, almost. pero SM is always packed even on weekdays, considering na medyo there is considerable distance from the downtown area.

International vessels to sit out recession in RP waters
Regions
Written by VG Cabuag / Reporter
Sunday, 15 February 2009 19:51

MORE international shipping owners and operators have signified intentions to park their vessels in Philippine seas for up to six months as they sit out the global economic crisis, and the Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) has offered the bays in Davao as ideal for this need.

Administrator Maria Elena Bautista of the Marina said 10 more Israeli-owned, Greek-flagged vessels would be parked possibly at the Pujada Bay in Davao Oriental by April or May this year.

“Davao is an ideal place to lay up their vessels because typhoons are fewer there,” Bautista said at the sidelines of the 5th Ports and Shipping Conference in Makati.

“I have just talked with them and they said there will be about 10 more vessels to be laid up in Davao,” she added.

Vessel operators have flocked to Subic Bay, according to Bautista.

Five vessels are already laid up in Malalag Bay, Davao del Sur. Three of these are ships of Zim Integrated Shipping Service and two are from Euro Bulk.

The government is charging $91 a day for vessels below 50,000 deadweight ton (DWT) and $104 a day for ships between 50,000 DWT and 150,000 DWT.

Bautista said the money will go to the national coffers, but local government rules allow a portion of it to go to the community.

Subic Bay Free Port is already full with at least 20 vessels now parked there.

The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority is charging $0.0174 per GRT (gross registered ton) per day for each ship anchored in the bay. This is on top of a one-time harbor fee of $0.06 per GRT per day.

The rate for domestic vessels, on the other hand, is half of that price.

Bautista said Malalag Bay could accommodate up to 35 vessels, and Pujada Bay up to 70.

During the conference, Transportation Secretary Leandro Mendoza urged maritime investors not to let such opportunity slip away.

“Even in times of crisis, a number of business potentials can be spawned, waiting to be unleashed as soon as the rough waters have settled,” Mendoza said during the conference.

As of now, only ocean-going vessels are being parked, while domestic fleets are still plying domestic routes.

Cargo volumes have all but disappeared since demand went on a steep downtrend that started in the third quarter of 2008.

The situation, however, has given local port authorities a boon in the form of parking fees.

Big Big Big!
BY MAYA M. PADILLO
Mindanao Daily Mirror
February 16, 2009

In March this year, something big and amazing will happen in the Island Garden City of Samal (IGACOS) as the country’s biggest water slides open at Bluejaz Beach Resort and Waterpark in Caliclic, Babak.

The 300-foot water slides will give beachgoers more fun in the sun. Apart from the water slides, additional attractions will be the two adult high speed slides to the waterpark and an extra swimming pool and bumper boats plus water raft rides.

A zipline will also be put up on top of the slides and the swimming pool.

Canadian owner Richard Middleton said the park is designed to cater to families and children. “We want the people to enjoy themselves here in the resort,” he said.

Bluejaz Resort opened its first three slides as well as a children’s water play area on September 12, 2008.

Situated in an 11-hectare property in Samal, Bluejaz was opened to the public last year as the region’s newest destination.

The water park is complete with an infinity pool overlooking Davao Gulf, children’s swimming/paddling pool below the infinity pool, children’s pool with waterfall, and toddler’s pool at the children’s water slides.

“Bluejaz Pirates Adventure,” the children’s water slide area, is open on weekdays and weekends. It is a self contained water slide area consisting of the resort’s newest water park attraction including three adventure water slides: Pirates Revenge, a 30-meter medium speed water slide ending in a cool splash at the bottom of the run; The Samal Shark, the second longest slide in the ‘Bluejaz Pirates Adventure’ area a fun way to keep cool on our tree shaded play area; and The Caliclic Escape for younger guests which is a short eight meter slide ending in a shallow play area.

Bluejaz boasts of clear water and white sand beach. It has 21 rooms, air conditioned and non-air conditioned.

i remember the asian currency crisis in 97. there was an issue of asiaweek looking at those construction projects in thailand. halos puro skeletons na lang nabilin sa supposedly construction boom. i hope that won't happen in the philippines. true, the overseas filipinos have been the boon of these constructions especially in the condo market. my only worry is it can only go so much. later on, if those local credit sources dries up, then what?

The city's economy has strong agri based exports and being into food, it would most likely be the last to succumb to the global recession as people must eat, crisis or not. But I believe this global crisis seemed more like a transition and when the smoke clears, the West will give way and Asia will become the next global power. When that time comes, hopefully Davao should be ready for it, not just economicaly but also influentialy.

I wonder what happened to that inventor from Tagum who also discovered a way to utilize water to fuel cars, just like Damian Dingle. I recently saw a local newspaper ad that that offers an imported product that extracts hydrogen from water to be attached to a car engine. Most likely ang technology basin nag originate sa inventors from our country.

OT: I'm not sure about the guy from Tagum, but Damian Dingle's case may not be the case. There were attempts to discredit, file case and even insulted him, but the reasons could be obviously more than that. Other countries instead offered to assist him but he negotiated to ensure his and his fellow countrymen's interests won't be shortchanged. After his discovery some countries and companies made inventions after his, like Honda.

So as not to be OT:

Toril, Marilog eyed for chevon production

Toril and Marilog districts in Davao City can become big economically by taking advantage of their location and concentrate on viable business ventures such as the chevon industry.

"Demand for chevon or goat meat is so high worldwide, especially in the United States that there are a lot of possibilities in terms of export," Councilor Rachel Zozobrado said.

She said this was already confirmed by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) as it urged Southern Mindanao to take advantage of the growing demand for chevon worldwide.

Reports show that US is importing up to 1.5 million pounds of goat meat from New Zealand and Australia every week.

Goat meat is one of the leading red meat products and accounts for 63 percent of the meat being consumed worldwide.

Zozobrado said the national and local government are at a dilemma about what to do with the unemployed, including those who have just graduated and can't find jobs as well as Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) who have been laid off from their jobs abroad.

"This can be a good business venture considering that the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (Owwa) is providing initial capitalization for OFWs who will be sent home," she said.

The chevon industry is not only a backyard industry that can provide livelihood to the barangays but it has the potential to provide employment to a lot of people, including farm hands, who will raise the goat, slaughterhouse staff and those in charge of marketing.

"Of all the areas in the city it is the third district which has a great potential for the chevon industry given its overall landscape," she said.

Goat meat, she said, is preferred not only for ethnic reasons but also because chevon digest more easily, is low fat and is a good alternative to fish or chicken,

DTI has already included the chevon industry under its Comprehensive Livelihood Emergency Employment Program (Cleep), which is the government's poverty alleviation program formed to address the economic crisis.

Zozobrado said most of the barangays in the third district have been identified as poor and this is their chance to rise from poverty.

She said residents can take advantage of the support being offered by the Department of Agriculture in terms of goat raising training and the DTI in marketing and business planning.

Shipping giant Maersk Line opens own Mindanao service

MANILA (PNA) – Shipping giant Maersk Line has recently set up a service in Mindanao, citing the island’s economic potential in mining, timber, tuna fishing, and banana production as its main reason in establishing its presence there.

The company noted that these are among the few growth areas in the Philippines for the shipping industry amid the global economic slump.

“Our new service, which is coming out of Davao, is our future in the Philippines,” Jesper Dalgaard Larsen said.

“It will cut our transit time to and from the Middle East, Europe and the rest of Southeast Asia by as much as 50 percent (from 27 days to 14) enabling us to carry more volume than usual that is vital at current times,” he said.

Maersk’s Mindanao presence, also called the PH1 3 service, uses a 1,100 twenty-footer equivalent units (TEU) vessel.

Its various ports of call include Manila, Davao, Malaysia, and Singapore.

Two other services – the PHI 1, operating out of Cagayan de Oro, and PHI 2 run by MCC Transport for domestic operations – control similar sized ships.

Seven Maersk vessels service the Philippines.

The company said it focuses on the further development of its PH13 service and is now in the process of making the necessary adjustments.

i guess this was a hoax... it's easy to derive oxygen and hydrogen from water by a simple electrolysis ... and thus power an engine ... the technique isn't new.... the only problem is that it is very costly to produce such energy thus, making it economically nonviable.

This is good news, previously it had been lamented that it was more costly to ship transport products to and from local destinations than destinations abroad.

These are basic economic facilities and infrastrcutures that must be improved, and guess they are doing it.

Far more easier even was the French invention of vehicle merely running in compressed air (!). Damian's invention required a small amount of energy to extract it, and even the water itself already registered energy, which must be his trade secret as to how. Surprising as it may seem, these kinds of inventions do exist and it should be something to be contemplated, encouraged rather than supressed or ridiculed. Although smoother transition of energy sources need to be addressed with the labor intensive oil indutry, but waging global wars and conflicts for oil is no longer a practical option for Humanity.

Damian Dingle was interviewed and he revealed that the reason why the govt. did not support him was because the IMF-World Bank prohibited our country from creating such kinds of technology.

I have no idea what happened to Dingle also, taga Tagum pala sya...IMF World Bank does not have the authority to dictate the RP, like we all witness these days. :D

frankly, I am hoping na hindi hoax yun! if true kasi yun, forget about the IMF World Bank, they cannot do anything if we begin manufacturing hydro-powered vehicles, kasi kikita ang RP sa sales ng mga sasakyan na yan if cost-effective talaga for mass production :)

He's not from Tagum, but I remembered someone from Tagum was interviewed by a local Davao TV news as he had an invention similar to Dingle's. You may be right, the IMF-World Bank has no authority to dictate, even in Latin America it is very, very unpopular as they must have noticed it ultimately worked against their country's interest.
