KING CITY February 25th, 2009, 09:13 AM http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a183/dubijon1/pearl%20farm/104_0499.jpg Maranaw Restaurant by: Dubijon1 artvision February 25th, 2009, 09:49 AM PGMA bares Davao baseport expansion marker Davao City (25 February) -- February, Friday the 13th takes on a new meaning when President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo herself unveiled the inaugural marker of the recently completed PhP 428 million worth Davao Baseport Phase-II Expansion Project at its north end. House Speaker Prospero Nograles, Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) Undersecretary for Maritime Affairs Thompson Lantion, Davao del Norte Congressman Anton Lagdameo and other Local Government Unit (LGU) officials also witnessed the ceremony. The development of the Davao baseport, also known by locals as the Sasa Wharf, is in congruence with the national government's Mindanao Super Region to spur trading and economic activities in the countryside. It is also a major accomplishment based on the 2010 corporate vision of the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) to meet international standards in facilities and services in which Davao is among the top ten piriority ports. "We can now accommodate up to eight foreign vessels at any given time with the expansion and expect to raise revenues up to PhP 150 million in 2009," Port District Manager Abdussabor Sawadjaan said in an interview with national and local media during the inauguration. PDM Sawadjaan also mentioned PPA's PhP 870 million worth Passenger Terminal Building (PTB) at the south end of the Sasa Wharf, a complementary development which would greatly boost local tourism and domestic trade. It would be recalled that the consultancy work for the 3, 740 square meter (sq.m.) PTB detailed engineering and architectural design was already completed in December 2008 by Manila-based Basic Technology and Management Corporation (BTMC) in a joint venture with Proconsult, Inc. Consulting Engineers (PICE) based on the winning Water Dragon Perspective which combines the Mindanaon torogan historical facade and a 21st century modern interior functionality. Sasa Wharf, owing to the agricultural nature of the Davao Region-XI, ranks third nationwide in foreign container traffic measured in Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) next only to the highly developed Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) and North Harbor. It is also the fourth performing port of the country in terms of total container traffic for both domestic and foreign TEUs combined. This is mostly attributed to the volume of the steady rise of fresh banana export demands transported through refrigerated container vans in the Davao provinces. Containerized bananas loaded in the Davao baseport are transported via direct routes to HongKong, China and Singapore at least thrice a week where the final consolidation to larger vessels take place before reaching markets in Japan, the Middle East and the United States. The Davao Region-Xi is said to contribute 6% of the Philippines ' total export according to reports by the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA). Completed ahead of schedule in December 2008 the Phase II expansion covers the construction of a 3, 179 sq.m. Reinforced Concrete (RC) Wharf, a 13,180 sq.m. back-up area, mooring and fendering area, drainage system, port lighting facilities and rockworks while Phase I, a rehabilitation project of the north side's 42.35 m. quay was undertaken in early 2007 yet. artvision February 25th, 2009, 10:12 AM ^^ I consider Art as more than a business and above the realm of commerce, as it's more importantly the expression of creating 'soul' to human endeavors and to nation-building. But the situation seemed that individuals with the talents had to be forced to be diverted with other matters instead because society had not done enough responsibility in nurturing it. I knew some people in the art field. xzibit31 February 25th, 2009, 10:25 AM ^^ I'm wondering what happened to the planned transfer of the Davao 911 HQ to Matina. i pass through the area everyday. its still work in progress.:) Il Tenore February 25th, 2009, 10:46 AM hello davao hello! welcome to SSC-Davao family! ;) reancorbz84 February 25th, 2009, 10:55 AM i passed by the LINMAR condos site earlier, and i think ongoing na ang construction.... and 90% done na ang gate/entrance.... whew! thot dili ni dayunon na project. The ordinance will undergo first public hearing at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the City Council building. Valentine's 2009 blog "Gituyo nato ni arun ang mga barangay ma-enganyo nga i-implement ang ordinance. Karun man gud 20 percent lang ang sa barangay mao na ang uban dili ganahan mag collect. Maka-away na sila, gamay pa gyud ang share [We did this to encourage barangay officials to implement the ordinance. Currently, they only get a 20 percent share of the garbage fees and none of the fines, thus they do not want to collect or implement. Sometimes they get into fights with residents but with just a meager share]. So during the initial consultation with EcoGov and Cenro, na suggest ni siya [it was suggested]," said Councilor Leonardo Avila III, City Council environment committee chair and proponent of the ordinance. Entitled in full as "An Ordinance Providing for an Ecological Solid Waste Management," the proposal seeks to make segregation of solid waste mandatory in the city. The waste shall be separated according to the following categories: biodegradable, recyclable, residual and special waste. Public utility vehicles such as buses, jeepneys, taxis, vans and even tricycles will be required to provide a waste receptacle in the vehicles when the ordinance becomes effective. The Cenro would also be designating collection points for each barangay to avoid having trash dumped in streets. There will also be different collection schedules for different categories of solid waste. The collection of different types of waste may only be allowed on the same day providing that separate collection vehicles or compartments are used. Avila said this would ensure people are compliant with the law. (GLP) sunstar.com ----------------------------------------------:) another initiative of the city government...proper and peculiar law/ordinance would discipline the people ( this would really compliment KING CITY's signature)... :D kudos cenro! in this instance davao will challenge singapore's sterility... davaob4now February 25th, 2009, 01:26 PM DTI to create more micro industries in Davao City As a response to the impending increase of the country's unemployment rate resulting from the global economic meltdown, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) embarks on initiatives towards the creation of more micro industries in Davao City. Targeting to create at least 550 jobs, DTI-Davao City Field Office is focusing on three major objectives, namely: to provide livelihood opportunities that will augment the income of families affected by the present economic crunch; to develop and enhance the technical capability of the local residents to make them more productive citizens of the community; and to help producers meet their commitment with their markets through sub-contracting scheme. The project is the response of DTI's Field Office in the city to the national government's call to create immediate livelihood opportunities through enrolling projects to the Comprehensive Livelihood Emergency Employment Program (CLEEP). These projects include the creation of mobile or rolling stores and mobile shoe-repair or shoe-shine shops, honey bee production, wellness program for call centers, and sub-contracting. Sub-contracting involves hiring people outside a company in order to deliver the volume of products required by another company or market on or before the agreed deadline. DTI 11 regional director Marizon S. Loreto said that for these identified projects to succeed, certain interventions shall be made. "DTI, along with other stakeholders and cooperators, will have to identify as well the needed interventions. These interventions could be in the form of linking trained weavers with local producers, conducting skills trainings, and helping the beneficiaries have access to financing," Loreto said. ------------------------------------------------:) woooh! thanks to DTI...for considering davao... in this tough times, this is genuinely helpful as this could ameliorate jobless davaoenos... davaob4now February 25th, 2009, 01:51 PM http://farm1.static.flickr.com/201/492243364_589a817ea0.jpg?v=0 where is, where dafet? davaob4now February 25th, 2009, 01:58 PM http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2250/2312563800_401dc76b33.jpg?v=0 Samal houses.. valued at Php 7,000 per head/night...recession is not an exemption... "business is business"... In an interview with the media during the opening of 2009 Musikahan sa Tagum held over the weekend, Ayala agreed that Musikahan sa Tagum would indeed attract a number of visitors. "Yes, definitely. Walay laing city nga naay Musikahan," he said. Ayala who revealed that he spent his childhood years in Tagum City where he spent his early education and secondary years in the city said he was amazed of the transformation of the city, especially of the love for music. He however suggested that the Musikahan to somehow give bias on cultural music appreciation and to innovate musical presentations so there would be something new to witness every annual Musikahan. Organized by Tagum City Tourism Council, the week-long annual Musikahan of Tagum opened on February 21 with the Drum and Bugle Corp (DBC) competition making a blast of colors and musical rendition. The Pasiklaban sa Musikahan was also held on the opening day. Musikahan will end on Friday, February 27 with the Mindanao Music Theater Awards Night capping the week-long event. Competitions featured during the festival include Avenida Musika, Barangay Musikahan, Rondalsayaw, Raprapan at Musikahan, Himig Handog, and Biyaheng Musikihan. There will also be music workshops and conferences. (PIA XI) [top] davaoeagle February 25th, 2009, 06:03 PM PIA Press Release 2009/02/25 World-renowned Arnis guru visits Davao by Romy Sabaldan Davao City (25 February) -- World-renowned Filipino martial arts master and movie actor Roland Dantes was the recent visitor of a little known municipality of Lupon in Davao Oriental, some one and a half hours drive from Davao City. Arnis de Mano which had its origin during the Spanish era in the Philippines using the bamboo sticks and any available rounded sticks during emergency skirmishes, was taught as a refresher and specialized course to a very select group of Barangay Peace and Security Officers (BPSO), headed by Barangay Police Commander Antonio dela Cruz, Jr. Known for his great following in the FMA (Filipino Martial Arts) in such Arnis de Mano-affiliated communities of Canada, US and Germany, The Australia-based Dantes, shared new techniques in "Defensive Tactics Seminar/Workshop for Law Enforcement Officers" during the 88th Araw Ng Barangay Poblacion, February 17 to 18. International restaurateur Mercedes dela Cruz - Barner, who brought Dantes to the province and main sponsor of the event said bringing the world-famous grandmaster of Arnis here will revive our interest for Arnis, which is an original Filipino martial arts. Mayor Domingo Lim thanked the dela Cruz family of Lupon for bringing Dantes to renew their interest for the sport which is related to the Filipino culture of self-preservation and national honor. He also thanked all the members of the Barangay Peace and Order Council headed by Kagawad Alan Balingit for their participation. Lizabel G. Holganza, president of the Information and Technology Association of Davao Inc., said the three markets are unexplored by local firms, which can tap Philippine trade attachés there for market intelligence and for help in promotions. Ms. Holganza said she remains optimistic that the city will achieve its 30% growth target in BPO business this year. Although industry leaders and government agencies are still collating data on the value of industry investments in the city last year, Ms. Holganza said that if the number of seats were the basis, it grew by 56% in 2008 from the previous year. She pointed out that last year, there were 6,000 contact center seats here and about 1,000 seats in the non-voice segment that includes medical and legal transcription, back-office jobs, financial processing and animation. The city currently hosts seven major contact center firms, each operating with over 200 seats. Ellen Jane F. Garcia, Davao operations manager of Callbox, a US contact center, concurred with Ms. Holganza’s estimates, citing her company’s case — from 200 seats in its one-year-old operations to about 300 seats by next month. "We are not into retrenchment; we are not into work [re]scheduling. Our partners continue to tap us [for our services]," said Ms. Garcia. What must be done, however, Ms. Holganza added, is to address the infrastructure needs of the city as well as evaluate its human resources pool. She noted that there are only four areas for investments accredited by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority, even as eight others have filed their application for such classification, which brings with it perks for locators. The problem, she added, is that property owners continue to "wait-and-see" if conditions will deteriorate or improve. "They need to be proactive," she added, noting that investors demand to have an area ready for occupation within three months. — Carmelito Q. Speaking at the Club 888 Forum yesterday at The Marco Polo, Davao, ICT Davao president Lizabel “Wit” Holganza said ICT players in the city are targeting to lure BPO investors from Singapore, Dubai, and Australia to locate in Davao City. Since not many of the city’s ICT players can afford outbound missions, the ICT is planning to do its marketing strategy through video teleconferencing. Holganza said the US is not included in the list because the ICT sector in Davao City foresees too many competitors in capturing the US market. She said ICT believes it can tap Filipinos residing in Singapore, Dubai, and Australia to help bring investments here. Holganza said some international IT companies have already expressed interest in investing in the outsourcing business in the city. Two of the companies, which are based in Australia and India, visited the city in the second and fourth quarter last year. Holganza said she is optimistic interest in the city will be renewed especially if the planned ICT summit pushes through this month. The summit will focus on “next wave cities” for IT-BPO, in which Davao City ranks fourth. The locations that made it to the Top 10 Next Wave Cities were: #1 Metro Laguna, #2 Metro Cavite, #3 Iloilo, #4 Davao City, #5 Bacolog, #6 Angeles-Clark-Mabalacat, #7 Baliuag-Marilao-Meycauyan, #8 Cagayan de Oro, #9 Malolos/Calumpit, and #10 Lipa. Despite making in to number 4, the city’s IT industry is still hounded by some problems like the lack of an ICT road map, the high cost of infrastructure, and the lack of PEZA accreditation, Holganza said. She said the IT-BPO industry has four parameters: talent development, cost of infrastructure, business environment, and risk management. Of the four, the cost of infrastructure is the city’s weakest, she said. She said of the 12 existing BPO developers in the city, only four are PEZA-registered while the others are still being processed. She said the lack of PEZA-accredited or registered space for IT-BPO businesses discourages would-be IT-BPO locators. The CBCP website said the show’s production team assured that all things needed are already in place and that they are now doing final touches. “Generally, so far so good. We are about 90 percent ready and it will surely raise smiles and recognition that would brought inmates a new hope in their hearts," said Jailbreak Production coordinator Alejandro Cadagdagon. Cadagdagon said they are finalizing the rehearsals for voice-music recording and choreography, along with a series of practices for the general stage performance of the artists. He added the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), Philippine National Police (PNP) and Task Force Davao (TF-Davao) will provide ample security. “We are also considering the safety and security measures of the cast, inmates as well as the audiences who will be coming for the event. That is why it remains to be on the top priority," he added. "Jailbreak" is a musical-theatrical production play showcasing the talents of the 28 inmates of Davao City Jail. The CBCP said the concert aims to lead the people to a better understanding of the plight and struggles of the detainees and to change their moral judgments. Other supporters of the concert included the Archdiocesan Commission on Prison Welfare (ACPW), Marist Fathers and Brothers, Marist Sisters, Couples for Christ, Handmaid of the Lord, Alexian Brothers, NCCC Davao and the City Government of Davao. - GMANews.TV WawaY[625] February 26th, 2009, 08:17 AM LINMARR CONDOS....... http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j187/tonioboi/Photo-0003g.jpg http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j187/tonioboi/Photo-0005m.jpg http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j187/tonioboi/Photo-0002-2.jpg kuyawa gud, nauna ang guard house kaysa sa main building  reancorbz84 February 26th, 2009, 08:19 AM COFFEE SHOP UPDATE!!!!! 1. 128 Ostrich Steak Hauz & Coffee Shop - Airport View, Catitipan 2. 51 Coffee Shop - Victoria Plaza, Bajada 3. 5th Avenue Café - Ecoland 3. In his television program, Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said the city's loan from Landbank of the Philippines (LBP) will be used to provide jobs to Dabawenyos and fund infrastructure projects in light of the economic crunch. Landbank has offered the city a P3 billion loan which the city accepted. The money will be used to fund four priority projects of Davao City. The mayor plans to fund the following projects: P600 million for traffic improvement like installation of more sensors and closed-circuit television cameras in the streets; P35 million for the completion of the sanitary landfill; P100 million for urban land reform and P25 million for a cemetery and columbarium. The City Council authorized Duterte last year to sign the omnibus term loan facility offered by LBP but the mayor opted to form a technical working group tasked to determine if projects would be finished within his term as he does not want to leave these hanging. Among the moves eyed by Duterte is for contractual and job orders of the City Government to be renewed every month instead of every three months. This way, Duterte said, many Dabawenyos will be given jobs as there will be available jobs every month. Plata THE proposed bike lanes ordinance of Davao City is set for deliberation under second reading by the City Council after its last public hearing Thursday. The ordinance, which was heard by the Sangguniang Panlungsod's (SP) committee on energy, transportation and communication, not only aims to protect bikers on city streets but also promote this alternative means of transportation that is healthy and environment-friendly. SP environment committee chair Leonardo R. Avila III, proponent of the ordinance, said he is determined to have the ordinance passed before the end of March. The ordinance classifies bike lanes into three types: for common use; priority path and the designated bike lane. The "common use" lanes are in areas like the city’s main streets where it is impossible to establish a separate bike lane. The ordinance will identify a speed limit for a particular lane to make it safe for bikers. The "priority path" is where cars can also pass through but are expected to "respect" bikers. The rule here is "yield to bikes". The last classification is the designated bike lane, which would take a longer time to implement and cost more as well. The Traffic Management Center will help the city identify roads under each classification. The ordinance, Avila said, is timely due to the increasing number of bikers. A study made by the city research team revealed that at a given time, about 10,000 bikers are in our streets. The peak hours are 6:00-7:30 in the morning and 5:00-7:00 in the evening. Also to be incorporated in the ordinance are provisions requiring establishments and offices to segregate bicycle-parking bays with metal posts where bikes can be chained. Offices are also encouraged to construct comfort rooms near the bike parking areas where biker-employees can change and freshen up before going to their respective offices. davaoeagle February 26th, 2009, 08:08 PM Home » Davao » Lifestyle Mindanao College to get Japan aid 02/24/2009 - 10:32Thursday, February 26, 2009 Sunstar Davao JAPANESE Ambassador Makoto Katsura will sign a contract for Grant Aid for Cultural Grassroot Projects for the Mindanao Kokusai Daigaku (MKD or Mindanao International College) of Davao City on the occasion of the Nihongo Fiesta to be held at SM Mall of Asia on Feb. 28. Under the contract, a grant of US$46,675 will be given to the MKD of Davao City for the rehabilitation of the college's Japanese language learning facilities. The grant will be used to develop an e-learning Japanese language program in the school in order to make Japanese language learning more accessible to students with various needs. Aside from the MKD of Davao, the Nihongo Center Foundation (NCF) of Manila will also receive a grant of US$43,764 for the improvement of its Japanese language learning equipment. Judge Antonina Escovilla, president of the MKD, and Ambassador Benjamin Sanvictores, president and chair of the NCF will be joining Ambassador Katsura to sign their organization's respective contracts. The Grant Assistance for Cultural Grassroot Projects was introduced in 2000 as part of Japan Official Development Assistance (ODA), expanding the scope of the Cultural Grant Aid to provide assistance to directly benefit the so-called grassroots level in developing countries through assistance for NGOs and local public bodies. davaoeagle February 26th, 2009, 08:11 PM Home » Davao » Lifestyle Southpoint is oratorical champ anew 02/24/2009 - 10:32Thursday, February 26, 2009 Sunstar Davao For second time, Southpoint School is undisputed as it bested seven other champions from other regions during the 14th PAWD (Philippine Association of Water Districts) National Oratorical contest held last February 11 in Cebu City. Last year, its contestant Krystel Duane S. Suam also emerged as champion. This year, Southpoint School was represented by 3rd year student Jemimah Pearl C. D'lonsod who received a P25,000 cash prize and a gold medal. The other winners were Jonathan Dave P. Ubiña of Metro Tuguegarao Water District representing Region 2, second placer who went home with P15,000 and a silver medal; and Rafael Victor R. Villanueva of Butuan City Water District representing Region 13 (Caraga), third placer who was given P10,000.00 in cash and a bronze medal. The remaining finalists were from Regions 4, 5, 9, 10 and 12. The contestants were judged by Lilian N. Asper of Local Water Utilities Administration; Dr. Sofia Logarta, Dr. Madrilena Dela Cerna, Prof. Elmer Montejo, all from University of the Philippines - Cebu; and Dr. Joseph Sol Galeon of Cebu Normal University in these criteria: content (organization, mechanics and originality), 40%; delivery (audience contact, platform behavior and mastery), 30%; and voice (pronunciation, diction, voice projection, and voice quality), 30%. The contest was themed "Water and Sanitation for Life's Preservation". During the Davao City Water District's 15th citywide oratorical contest, D'lonsod won over 36 participants during the citywide level. She then represented Davao City Water District to the regional finals sponsored by the Southern and Central Mindanao Water Information Council (Socemwic) last November 28, 2008 in Tagum City. D'lonsod was trained by teacher-coach Pauline Anne B. Ferrero. "As PAWD ended the conduct of National and On-the-Spot Poster Making contests last February, we are glad that Davao City Water District has produced eight local oratorical champions who made names in the top three places in the national level. We are proud to have affected environmental consciousness among the students thru these contests," said Rodora N. Gamboa, DCWD general manager. DCWD public information/relations manager and contests coordinator, Maria Editha C. Monje, said that though the oratorical and poster making contests have ended on the national level this year, DCWD will continue to hold other events to sustain the utility's campaign on water and watershed preservation among students. In fact, DCWD started the inter high school debate contest last year and held extemporaneous contests from 2000 until 2007. She also thanked the high schools that had supported the citywide oratorical for 15 and the on-the-spot poster making contest for 18 years. Tacio "LAND of the sun caressed, Pearl of the Orient seas, our Eden lost!" That's what Dr. Jose P. Rizal wrote in My Last Farewell ("Mi Ultimo Adios") about his beloved country, the Philippines. The country has a total land area of 300,000 square kilometers and these are distributed in 7,107 islands (of which only 2,500 have names and 450 are inhabited). "The islands abound with white-sand beaches, exotic tropical vegetation and beautiful lakes and rivers," wrote the All-Asia Travel Guide. What makes the Philippines truly distinct among other countries is the fact that it has unique places and things that can be found only in the country. Much less, it is paradise for tourists. As the travel guide, published by the Far Eastern Economic Review, puts it: "Places in the Philippines worth visiting are so numerous that the tourist can only hope to see a few of them." For a start, here are some of those you should not miss to visit: If you visit the Philippines during summer, Baguio should be on top of your list. A highly urbanized city in northern Luzon, it was established by Americans in 1900. Its name comes from the Ibaloi word bagiw, which means "moss." Being at an altitude of approximately 1,500 meters, the place is conducive to the growth of mossy plants and orchids. And due to its cool mountain weather, Baguio is considered the summer capital of the Philippines. Because of its many pine trees it is also called the "City of Pines." About 100 kilometers north of Baguio in Banaue are the breathtaking rice terraces, touted to be "the Eighth Wonder of the World." The rice terraces, described as "the stairway to heaven," are a living monument to the ingenuity of tribal Filipino farmers who have tilled the steep slopes for over 2,000 years. Terraced agricultural fields are common in Asia but the Banaue rice terraces are the most extensive. If stretched end to end in a line, the terraces measure 48,280.4 kilometers -- about 10 times longer than the Great Wall of China or about half the earth's circumference. Some 90 kilometers south of Manila is Taal, the homeplace of Taal Volcano, a 406-meter-high crater and said to be the world's smallest volcano. It is described as "a crater within an island within a lake" because it stands as an island at Taal Lake. The lake was formed after the volcano, which used to be much larger, collapsed. The ridges around Tagaytay City, which overlooks the lake, are believed to be part of the crater of the old volcano. Five hundred fifty-three kilometers from Manila is the famous Mayon Volcano, the main landmark of Albay Province. It is the country's most active volcano and considered to be the world's most perfectly formed volcano for its symmetrical cone. Towering at a height of 2,462 meters above sea level, it overlooks Legaspi City. Its eruption in 1911 killed 1,300 people and buried the town of Cagsawa. The island of Palawan, considered the country's last frontier, is a haven for environmentalists. For one, there's the world famous St. Paul Subterranean National Park, a massive white rock mountain which is 1,028 meters above sea level and stretches towards Cleopatra's Needle. Its main feature is the underground river, with its 8.2 kilometers of labyrinthine caves carved by rainwater and the waves of South China Sea. In Visayas, the most visited place is Cebu, the oldest city in the country which has many points of historical interest, including Mactan Island where Portuguese Ferdinand Magellan met his death. Across the strait from Cebu is the island of Bohol, celebrated for the unusual Chocolate Hills, consisting of thousands of cone-shaped mounds scattered over 50 square-kilometers. Each hill rises 30 to 120 meters above the surrounding plateau. The hills look like chocolate drops when the grass turns brown. "The hills are best observed at dawn or dusk," said a native in the area. Don't miss these points of interest while in Bohol: Baclayon, the oldest stone church in the country; the market site of the Sikatuna-Legaspi blood compact in barrio Bohol, about three kilometers from Tagbilaran; and the Hinagdanan Cave. But the most famous tourist attraction in the Visayas is Boracay Island. Its long white sand beaches rival the best beaches of more popular destinations such as the Caribbean and the South Pacific. The fun doesn't end when the sun sets. Its nightlife pulsates with many bars and restaurants serving food, drink and fun until the next morning. Mindanao has its fair share of places to visit. The teardrop shaped Siargao Island faces the Pacific Ocean and the Philippine Deep, the second deepest water in the world. However, this hidden tropical jewel in Surigao hosts one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. In fact, it is the surfing capital of the Philippines because its surfing waves are comparable to that of Hawaii’s. American surf photographer John Callahan discovered the remarkable waves of Cloud Nine in 1993. Davao, the most developed city in Mindanao, is known for Mount Apo (the country's highest peak at 2,954 meters above sea level), durian (the fruit which smells like hell and tastes like heaven), and waling-waling (the queen of Philippine orchids). It is also home to the endangered Philippine eagle, the country's national symbol. Tourists can also eat to their heart's content the sweetest fruit in the world -- the mango. And these places are just for starting points? davaoeagle February 26th, 2009, 08:16 PM Home » Davao » Lifestyle Paradise for tourists 02/24/2009 - 10:32Thursday, February 26, 2009 Sunstar Davao By Henrylito D. And these places are just for starting points? davaob4now February 27th, 2009, 01:52 AM ^^ love the article...:) hedcor sibulan ssst...clean your PM inbox please....:) Home » Davao » Local News Rody: Davao City has its own stimulus package 02/24/2009 - 10:32Thursday, February 26, 2009 Sunstar Davao THE City Government of Davao is eyeing its own stimulus budget to cushion the impact of the global financial crisis. I believe that after the smoke clears from the global financial crisis, Asia will emerge the next powerhouse, and the country especially Mindanao with its vast potentials and resources should be ready when the time comes. The Mayor's move grooming Davao's infrastructures and facilities to higher standards is a good preparation to gear and prepare Davao as the country's next international city that will represent not just Mindanao but also the BIMP areas, and that the city should also focus on the BIMP EAGA's ties and should play a major role (considering it is a major proponent of its conception) for its implementation although gradually, but consistenly, considering Davao's geographical strategic advantage and its potentials being a major english speaking metropolis having one of Asia's best human resource. davaob4now February 27th, 2009, 03:58 AM I believe that after the smoke clears from the global financial crisis, Asia will emerge the next powerhouse, and the country especially Mindanao with its vast potentials and resources should be ready when the time comes. This was announced by Lizabel "Wit" Holganza, ICT Davao Inc. president on Wednesday, saying that during the summit, her organization will suggest that the Task Force for the formulation of the Comprehensive ICT Master Plan for Davao City be led by the private sector. Holganza said the ICT Task Force is currently led by the public sector. She, on the other hand, claimed that there are already initial inputs for the master plan which rest in four areas namely: talent development, infrastructure, business environment, and risk management. "Of these four areas, Davao City is weakest at infrastructure. Davao only has four IT Parks. Cebu has 64 and the number of IT parks in Manila is triple than that the number in Cebu. Iloilo even beat us as it has nine," Holganza said. She added that Davao City has 12 BPO developers but only four are accredited by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (Peza). "We have no ready location here. We must make more sites ready for ICT so locators who want to move in could be accommodated," she said. "We have this attitude na why develop the place, wala pa naman. But the space should be ready three to six months before the locators come in," Holganza disclosed. "The opportunity will never come unless you make the first step." Meanwhile, Holganza said since prospects for the BPO industry are very bright and it can contribute to the city's economic development, local leaders need to pay more attention to the sector. "We are enjoying the local government’s support, but we need to double and triple that kind of support," she said. That is interesting, bisan trisikad lang na but that will be a sign of greater things to come, and the local government is doing its initiative to pave the way for worldwide transition towards cleaner technologies for the future. There should be more of these kinds of technologies in the city streets and the Davao LGU should overule ridiculous prohibitions that disallow vehicles that use pollution-free technologies. "Adventure Davao!" takes you to a wonderland of flora and fauna, mystical lakes, waterfalls and caves, of majestic eagles and panoramic trek to the tallest mountain in the country. For every place you visit, stamps are sold in the tourism office to be posted on your passport as reference and indication that you have toured their scenic attractions which are treasures we are proud of. Passport to Adventure Davao is one of the many educational and informative materials produced by the Department of Tourism Region XI. The tourist attractions exist for our appreciation and enjoyment of future generations. It is our obligation to respect nature and do our part to protect them. As you visit, step lightly on the land breathe deeply the air, reflect on our history and take only memories with you when you leave. HOW WILL THE PASSPORT BE STAMPED? The Department of Tourism will provide the local tourism offices with the Dry Seal. The local tourism officers will coordinate with their private establishments and tour operators to provide the necessary stamp to certify that the passport holder indeed availed these packages. After having visited all the destinations featured in the category and with the proper stamps and seal, the holder then presents the passport to DOT office for the final seal: "Nature Lover Seal of Approval: for Category A and "Total Adventurer Seal" for Category B and claim his/her reward and certificate. However, one must ensure that the passport must be properly documented first. Upon receipt of the passport, one must present it to DOT XI for the Reference Date and for its Expiration Date. Once this has been accomplished, it is only at this time that he/she can avail of the packages. Participating establishments and LGUs will not stamp documented passports. FOR HOW LONG WILL THE PASSPORT BE USED? The passport is good only for two years upon receipt. Every two years new passports are released featuring other destinations. Our forefathers believed these to be the dwelling places of magic. Davao City is such a place. Rising out of the blue waters off the southern coast of Mindanao, the city is pushed inland by a jut of sea: a sprawl of emerald palm fronds, beaches, towns and modern centers of lively commerce – all a stone’s throw away from the mythical waters of the Davao Gulf. Davao City is a key financial center in Mindanao. It is the hub of investments in the Davao Region. Its strategic location connects it not only to the East ASEAN Growth Area, but also to other centers of commerce in the Pacific. Its geographic location, for instance, allows entrepreneurs to ship products like bananas and tuna directly to the markets of Japan. As the center of trade and tourism in Southern Philippines, investors are assured that all the necessary components of an investment center are readily available: air transportation services, port facilities, infrastructure, posh hotels, and modern telecommunications. The city’s location is so conducive to commerce that it provides businessmen with a natural environment for investments. When an investor looks at Davao, however, he should not limit himself to the city. He should look at the region as a whole. Davao City serves as a strong magnet for investment but the investment sites are not the city itself: they are found in the neighboring territories. Davao City is what it is today because of the diverse variety of resources in the whole of the Davao region. Agricultural, marine, mining and forestry products are found in great abundance just outside the city and among neighboring provinces. The investment potential in these areas remain promising. But Davao has progressed much faster than the other cities in Mindanao not only because of its strategic location and its rich resources, but also because of its people who provide investors with a strong and talented workforce. And so when one invests in Davao, he is actually investing in the region as a whole: its resilient people, its bountiful resources, its colorful past, and its even more promising future. Philippine Business (http://www.philippinebusiness.com.ph/geographics/davaocity.htm) dinabaw February 27th, 2009, 02:07 PM most peaceful daw oh!lol Davao Unlimited Davao City's diversity accounts for its continued success as an industrial site By Roberto U. Teo http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/2822/airportdavao.gif (http://imageshack.us) The Davao International Airport is one of the most modern airports in the Philippines Davao City is undoubtedly one of the most competitive cities in the country. Promoted as the Most Peaceful City in Southeast Asia, Davao City is a distinct place in Southern Philippines where people of different cultural backgrounds, religions, and dialects live harmoniously together. Davao is home to the second largest eagle in the world, the Philippine Eagle. These eagles can be found within the vicinity of the second highest peak in Southeast Asia, and the Philippines highest peak, the Mt. Apo. The city is also home to the most beautiful orchids in the world such as the rare waling waling. Unique flora are endemic to the city, which make Davao the official orchid capital of the Philippines as declared by former President Corazon Aquino. But the beauty of Davao does not only lie on its abundant natural beauty. Here is a place where economic activities are just as busy as other fast-growing metropolis in the country today. Millions to Billions The city's agricultural activities are in the production of fruits and high value crops, cutflowers, vegetables, industrial, fiber and oil crops, and beverage crops. Davao City also has livestock, poultry, and dairy production, fishing, forestry, coconut production as well as rice and corn production. Major industrial activities include manufacturing, food processing, furniture and wood products, metal working, and the production of gifts, toys, and housewares. Private investments registered through the Invest-in-Davao project and the Board of Investments is quite impressive. Davao has shifted counting investments from millions to billions of pesos. Property development and tourism facilities account for 75%of these investments. In trading, the port of Davao has consistently registered a positive balance of trade since 1987. The city's top two trading partners are the United States and Japan. Davao City achieved its highest performance in 2003 at over US$840 million as well as its highest trade balance of over US$500 million. The leading export products include bananas, rubber cup, pineapple, cement, activated carbon, banana chips, asparagus, coconut oil, tuna, scrap steel or iron. Among the top ten imported goods are tobacco and spirits, paper, fuel and oil, food, miscellaneous products, hardware, chemicals, iron and steel, electrical and machinery, and heavy equipment. Relaxing Choices In the tourism front, local and foreign businessmen have invested in this sector resulting in the diversification of products and services in recent years. Davao City now has world-class accommodation facilities with around 3,000 rooms available. Tourists in the city have numerous choices. There are world-class mountain parks and resorts for nature lovers complete with modern facilities and amenities such as the Eden Mountain Resort and the Malagos Garden Resort. The Davao International Airport is one of the most modern airports in the Philippines The city's countless beach resorts offer places where one can snorkel, scuba dive, engage in other water sports, or just laze in the sun. For golfers, Davao has international standard 18-hole golf courses waiting for them to conquer as they bust pars, birdies, eagles, and even an albatross or a hole-in-one. Because of the availability of tourism products and facilities, visitor arrivals have increased annually from less than 100,000 in 1990 to almost 500,000 in 2003. About 71% of all visitors to Southern Mindanao have Davao City as their end destination. Business Matters With the many diverse industries actively moving in Davao City, the demand for skilled workers is also growing. Thus, there are opportunities for putting up training institutions in order to meet this demand. Another opportunity that should be seized by investors is in real estate development. With a backlog of more than 40,000 housing units, the development of low-cost to medium-range housing units would be a feasible venture in the city. Nowadays, the Philippines should not compete with other equally labor-rich countries in terms of mass production of products for the masses and the middle class. Instead it should utilize its widely available pool of inherently artistic workers to answer the growing demand in the upper-class market for high-end quality products that exude artistic quality and fine craftsmanship. The next business opportunity is a global trend. Anything related to new technology on how people can communicate more efficiently is feasible, from products and services related to the Internet, mobile communications, as well as the putting up of call centers where Davao has the edge in terms of providing an English-speaking labor force. The next trend is all about relaxation. The world is now willing to pay the price in order to taste, see, touch, smell, and feel relaxed. Thus, products and services that provide relaxation will have a captive market--the working class, the young and not so young professionals, and even businessmen who feel they need relaxation as a reward. Preferred Investment Areas The city's nine preferred investment areas are property development; tourism and recreational facilities; light manufacturing; agribusinesss and food processing; transshipment facilities; telecommunications; establishment of foreign bank branches; medical, educational, training, and sports facilities; and environmental enhancement and protection projects. Investors in these areas can avail of local incentives such as a three-year exemption from payment of local fees and charges and a two-year exemption from payment of basic real property tax. These incentives are over and above what investors may avail of under the Philippine Omnibus Investment Code of 1987. Robert U. Teo is the director of the Davao City Investment Promotion Center. The companies are the Canada-based Infotech Outsourcing Services, Mustang Technologies, Antech Solutions, and GenTech Software, according to Lizabel Holganza, president of ICT Inc. Other companies from Australia, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and the US have also expressed interest in operating in the city during a gathering in Davao spearheaded by the local ICT last week, said Holganza. “We have other competitors like Cairo, Egypt, and other Southeast Asian countries that also want to become ICT hubs but we believe we are at an advantage,” she said. Asked what these companies’ main concerns were, Holganza said: “They want to have an assurance that Davao City is a safe place.” In a related development, Holganza said plans by ICT to establish a P3-million databank of the industry's manpower resource has been scrapped in view of a recent tie-up with the government, which is expected to achieve the same thing. Under the tie-up agreement, the ICT sector will be collaborating with the Department of Labor and Employment for the GMA Jobs program, and with the National Economic Development Authority for the Davao Regional Geographic Information Network. Some adjustments though have to be made on the DOLE system to make it responsive to the needs of the ICT sector, Holganza said. The GMA Jobs program is a system used by DOLE to store data on the manpower needs of local and international companies. Holganza said the ICT industry continues to grow. This year, the BPO sector plans to hire 2,400 people for the voice and non-voice sub-sectors. “The BPO industry nationwide is expected to grow by 30 percent with a revenue forecast of P8 billion from only P6.3 billion in 2008,” Holganza said. Ellen Jane Garcia, operations manager of Callbox Sales and Marketing Solutions, said instead of experiencing a slowdown because of the global financial crisis, there was a notable increase in the number of customers. “The crisis didn't have any effect. In fact, our sales went up,” she said. Garcia said this could be due to the fact that the local BPO industry was not dependent on countries affected by the financial crisis. Holganza said the BPO industry could be considered the country's “sunshine industry” that could help prop up the economy in view of shrinking incomes by export companies and lower remittances from overseas Filipino workers. paulkrps February 28th, 2009, 12:31 AM http://s5.tinypic.com/2s0n05t.jpg The helicopter is courtesy of CM Rody! http://s5.tinypic.com/2uhbwup.jpg A resort somewhere in Dumoy http://s5.tinypic.com/2cn70qs.jpg Queensland!!! http://s5.tinypic.com/6oo39f.jpg Queensland pa rin http://s5.tinypic.com/2hwjvd3.jpg Times Beach http://s5.tinypic.com/rtq7h1.jpg Magsaysay Park http://s5.tinypic.com/8w06td.jpg Isla Verde great pics sir leo. welcome back. "The nature of the business of salon and spa is really my passion so I pursued the plan of opening it here," Yamashita, who hails in Japan, told Sun.Star. Yamashita said she wants Dei's to establish a name in the city; thus, any business venture that she will put up will carry her nickname Dei. "People close to me used to call me Dei. I want that customers would feel comfortable whenever they come and visit my places. I want to make them feel they are at home," she said. She said Dei's is committed to bring more employment for people, help improve their lives, and contribute to the city's tourism and economic growth. "I fell in love with Davao and I see the potential of my businesses here than any other places; peace and order is stable and the people are warm," she said. For its opening promo, Dei's Salon and Spa will be offering up to 50 percent discount for its services from February 28 to March 7. It offers services such as hair cut, hot oil, hair spa, intensive treatment, hair styling, face make-up, manicure and pedicure, foot spa with free pedicure, hair cellophane, eyebrow shaping, hair color, hair perming, hair relax, and hair reborn. It also offers spa packages, skin care, and whitening package at very affordable prices. These investments amount to P3.5 billion with a banana plantation project having the highest cost, said Gil Dureza, head of the BOI in Western, Southern and Central Mindanao, as he faced reporters in Tuesday's edition of the Business Forum at the Medispa at SM City Davao. "A foreign-based company and two local companies showed interest in investing in a banana plantation with a total of 3,400 hectares," Dureza said. "An average of P2 million per hectare is the cost of investment for a banana plantation." Aside from this, Dureza cited other investments, including housing projects, mining, plastic recycling, hotel and retirement village, coffee processing, real estate development and photo editing. He said these new investments were approved in December last year and are expected to be put up anytime this year. Dureza said 18 firms registered with the BOI last year, of which 10 are located in Davao City with an investment cost of P1.5 billion; four in Davao del Sur with P338 million; three in Compostela Valley Province with P1.3 billion; and one in Davao del Norte with P10 million, making the investments total P3.2 billion as of December 2008. In 2007, 12 firms registered with the BOI. "What was exciting last year was the entry of three motorcycle manufacturing companies; two are registered in Davao City and the other in Davao del Norte," Dureza said. These companies are the Huari Motorcycles Philippines and the Starway International Stock Co., both in Davao City, and the Ever Automotive Center Corp. in Davao del Norte. As compared to the total investments in 2007, BOI was able to record a total of P7.7 billion worth of investments. He said the investment value during the year is higher compared to last year. In 2007, BOI considered the entry of Hedcor as one of the biggest projects in the region with P2.8 billion worth of investments. The stakeholders and other agencies and offices agreed to finally pass for the City Council’s approval the resolution declaring barangay Mintal as a Japanese Heritage Site. This after the Committee on International Relations headed by councilor Rachel Zozobrado conducted its third and final committee hearing on the proposed resolution yesterday. Teo said it is only fitting to declare the area as a Japanese Heritage Site considering that it has indeed been identified by researchers as an area where the Japanese settled from 1919 to 1945. The location, he said, is very important because Japanese tourists would definitely want to pay homage and visit the sites previously occupied by their ascendants. Zozobrado, who also hails from Mintal, said the barangay has always been known as Little Tokyo. She said the passage of the resolution declaring Mintal as a Japanese heritage site is long overdue since it would have already attracted Japanese tourists last August. Philippine Nikkei Jinkai Incorporated Chairman Bernardo Fernandez said all of Mintal before was occupied and owned by the Japanese. Historically, he said, the entire Mintal area is really a Japanese community. Barangay Captain Ra-mon Bargamento has already identified a site where the planned Japanese garden would be built, the small plaza beside the Mintal Gym. However, Historical Society Chair Enrica Babao said the place is too small and suggested that they scout for bigger areas in the area since there are lots of government institutions in the area like the Philippine Coconut Authority and the Bureau of Plant Industry. The committee agreed to look into other areas where the suggested Japanese garden will be located as a symbol of Japan’s heritage. The early govt officials most likely had in mind in drafting the city boundaries was to contain the large agricultural investments of the Japanese and to compete with their large population by the local inhabitants scattered in various places of the boundaries so as to justify the creation of Davao City. LOL artvision March 1st, 2009, 09:16 AM ^^ Dugay na kaayo na nga moniker sa Davao nga pirme nako madunggan due to its past nga daghan mga Japanese settlers diri before. Unlike today of course, Mintal during that time must have a large sizable Japanese population with their facilities and infrastructures. Here's an article: Davaokuo, as the Japanese enclave was called before WWII, is a symbol of the evolving international Japanese identity. By Lynda Lin, Assistant Editor In Davao, a bustling city on the Philippines' southernmost island of Mindanao, vestiges of its former life as a Little Tokyo still persevere in the city's fabric of life. From the early 1900s to the beginning of World War II, Japanese sojourners lured by the financial promise of abaca, the country's cash crop, set up a small enclave in the city and called it Davaokuo. Back then, Japanese restaurants, hotels and even a movie theater lined the streets surrounding San Pedro Cathedral, but today the only small imprints are in ruins. An old monument of pioneering abaca plantation owner Kyozaburo Ohta still stands in the former Japanese settlement of Mintal alongside the ruins of the Furukawa Fiber Plant and a small Japanese cemetery where the original Japanese settlers were buried. But perhaps the strongest Japanese imprint in the city hugged by the Davao Gulf and the Mindanao Sea are its people - an estimated 1,000 children of Japanese-Filipina parentage left behind in Davao just after the end of WWII. Today, there are around 20,000 Philippine Nikkei-jin or descendents of Japanese Issei, said Shun Ohno, a professor at Kyushu University Asia in Japan. Like many other Japanese enclaves in the United States, war directly affected the rise and fall of Davaokuo. What was once a city born out of fear of Japanese control (Davao was made a chartered city with appointive officials instead of elective officials to thwart Japanese Filipinos from taking control) has turned into a Japanese-friendly tourism spot. "It is good to think that I am a Japanese Filipino," said Glenbelle Baslao, 20, of Davao. "How [the Japanese] were able to rise after World War II is somewhat an inspiration for us down here." Issei Influence The first group of pioneering Issei arrived in the Philippines in 1903 and settled in Davao's virgin forests and jungles in hopes of capitalizing on the demand for abaca or "Manila hemp." Although the Issei were prohibited from owning land, they managed to go around the law by making deals with local landowners. With the enriched land, they built an agricultural empire. Among these entrepreneurs were the founders of the Ohta Development Company and the Furukawa Fiber Plant. Ohta and Furukawa Takushouko were said to employ many local residents to work in the fields. Today, Ohta's legacy is frozen in time with his monument and the remains of the employee barracks still on display. Traces of the Ohta influence also can be seen in Davao City's district of Bago Shiro, which derives its name from Kozo Ohshiro, the vice president of Ohta Development Company and the first president of the Davao Japanese Association. By the early 1920s, Davaokuo's Japanese population was exploding. "Japanese residential areas were scattered around Davao City and its surround areas such as districts of Mintal and Calinan. There were almost 20,000 Japanese residents at its peak in the whole of Davao just before the outbreak of the Pacific War," said Ohno, who received his Master of Arts degree in Philippines Studies at the University of the Philippines and his doctorate from the Australian National University. The Issei created their own school, newspapers and Shinto Shrine. They also easily intermarried with Davao's indigenous peoples, but the symbiotic harmony would come to an end with the start of WWII. http://www.pacificcitizen.org/content/2007/national/apr20-lin-davaokuo.htm leml March 1st, 2009, 09:22 AM Ideas please for our Documentary. (ALI), the country’s largest property developer, targets to complete in two years its shopping mall in Davao City, a sign that the company continues to be bullish on the growth of the retail sector. At the sidelines of the Philippine Dealing System awards ceremony late Friday, ALI senior vice president and chief finance officer Jaime Ysmael said the excavation process has started in the 9-hectare area which they are developing in partnership with the Davao-based Anflo Management & Investment Corp., Pioneer Trading & Supply Co. Inc. and Davao Motor Sales Co. ALI owns a 67-percent stake in the joint venture. “We will be building a mall similar to the Ayala Center in Cebu,” he said. Initial investments will cost about P2 billion. Apart from the shopping mall, an office building designed for business- process outsourcing (BPO) will also be built in the property but its completion would depend on the demand for BPO space. “The site is there. The plan is to do the development in phases,” said Ysmael. The joint venture is allotting 40,000 square meters for retail development and a 20,000 sq m for the BPO structure. ALI, a unit of Ayala Corp. and whose shares are traded at the stock exchange, currently operates eight malls, namely, Glorietta, Greenbelt, Alabang Town Center, Ayala Center Cebu, Market! Market!, Serendra, Bonifacio High Street and TriNoma. At the end of 2008, the shopping malls delivered P4.3 billion in revenues for ALI. ALI managed to post a 10-percent growth in net profit last year despite the tough business environment caused by the lingering global financial crisis. The company booked a net profit of P4.8 billion from P4.4 billion on the back of strong operating revenues and equity earnings from affiliates combined with effective cost-control measures. Consolidated revenues grew 31 percent to P33.7 billion from P25.7 billion a year earlier, while operating revenues rose 34 percent to P30.6 billion, with the bulk of the gains delivered by the residential, strategic landbank and construction businesses. Shopping centers and corporate business also contributed better results to ALI’s total revenues. But given the difficult times, Ysmael said the pressure in terms of sales slowing down would be there but the cost-side would at least show some recovery with minimal price increases in steel as demand has slowed down as well. The company is allotting P17.4 billion as capital expenditure this year from P18.9 billion in 2008. Bulk of this amount would go to ongoing projects like residential condominiums. henji March 1st, 2009, 11:28 PM ^^sugod na jud?? dinabaw March 2nd, 2009, 03:22 AM BPO firms to conduct trade visits in Davao By Joy Romares-Sevilla FOUR business process outsourcing (BPO) companies that are already operating in the Philippines have shown interest in locating to Davao City this year, a top official of the ICT Davao Inc. revealed. Lizabel Holganza, ICT Davao Inc. president, told reporters last week that three of the four companies include Infotech; Mustang Solutions, which is already operating in Cebu City; and the Antech Solutions. Valentine's 2009 blog "A few weeks from now, these BPO companies will conduct trade visits in the city," Holganza said. She said these companies are just among those who have participated in the business matching activity, one of the highlights during the Annual e-Services Exposition held recently at the SMX Convention Center at the Mall of Asia. The event was participated in by a 30-man team from Davao City, including different players in the BPO industry and representatives from the government sector. "Thirty-four BPO companies have participated in the business matching," Holganza said. "Davao City has the biggest delegation who attended in the expo." She added that during the expo, ICT Davao Inc. was also able to present the BPO opportunities in Davao and offer the city's outsourcing capability. Holganza earlier said the "ICT sector is in a very bright spot in the light of the global economic crisis." She claimed that this year BPO revenue nationwide is expected to grow by 36 percent from P6.3 billion in 2008 to P8 billion in 2009. "This would also mean increase in the number of jobs. President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has targeted to increase the number of jobs in the BPO industry by 30 percent this year," Holganza said. She said BPO industry in Davao City is one of the fastest growing sectors, saying that 56 percent growth was noted in terms in the number of jobs for the contact centers and non-voice from 2007 to 2008. She said the National Government's support to increase the budget for scholarship grants through the Technical Education and Skills Training Authority (Tesda) would also mean more employment opportunities in the BPO sector. Tesda is giving scholarship programs (finishing courses) for those who may want to be call center agents. Holganza said that in the previous year, the National Government allocated P350 million budget for Tesda scholarship grants. But, with the aim of increasing skilled workers in the country, the National Government increased the budget this year to P5.6 billion that will be spread nationwide. Peng Hok March 2nd, 2009, 04:05 AM Davao shopping mall shows ALI’s sentiment Written by Honey Madrilejos-Reyes / Reporter Sunday, 01 March 2009 23:28 Business Mirror (http://businessmirror.com.ph/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=6793:davao-shopping-mall-shows-alis-sentiment&catid=45:regions&Itemid=71) AYALA Land Inc. Bulk of this amount would go to ongoing projects like residential condominiums.  xzibit31 March 2nd, 2009, 04:30 AM ^^ kuripot! kuripot! kuripot!:lol: d mutubag ug text!!!! artvision March 2nd, 2009, 04:31 AM ^^ Hope the Mintal project pushes through. Little Tokyo? Hmmm. That was dubbed during the 1930's by the olden generation when Japanese settlers peaked to as much as 20,000 in population in Davao. Not often in the 30's can one find towns in Mindanao with that large population, much less with foreign settlers. Obviously Tokyo during that time is far different from the Tokyo of today with its skyscrapers. Be aware that Japan is an earthquake prone country and most of their cities prior to the present earthquake-proof technologies were usually low rise and wooden structures during those times. The profusion of many Japanese in the area with their buildings, school, hospital, temple can fondly earn the moniker, as Tokyo is the name most easily recalled to Japan, and Mintal or Davao as whole during that time most probably had the largest concentrated Japanese population in the whole country so people during that era would prefer to dub Davao with Japan's largest and most popular city, rather than to secondary cities. I've also read before that Davao during those times had the largest number of registered vehicles next to Manila, so it won't be surprising that they would refer to the place as such. The Philippines may also be one of the most progressive in Asia in the early part of 20th century, perhaps next only to Japan because there was an era when the country did achieve it. Ltd., which is the biggest agribusiness conglomerate in Thailand and the fifth largest feed mill operator in the world,” Salacup said. Salacup said Arroyo and Yap had accompanied these potential investors to the island city to tour them around a 2,000-hectare area in Talikud Island that is ideal for a poultry project and a sizeable portion that is still available for development in the 200-hectare mariculture park in the island that is jointly run by the DA’s Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and the city government of Samal. Only 20 hectares of the 200-hectare mariculture park has thus far been developed by Davao-based agribusinessmen into fish cages for bangus and other high-value marine species, he said. Salacup, who is in-charge of this project proposal, said Arroyo and Yap had told the Thai businessmen that Talikud Island was an ideal location for a poultry project because it was a relatively pristine island with wide and open flat and rolling highlands that is outside the country’s typhoon belt and very accessible to the Davao economic hub as well as to its international airport and international seaport. Moreover, he said, Arroyo and Yap cited raw materials and other supplementations locally available, farm equipment and other logistics that can be easily obtained, abundant skilled labor, and a stable peace and order situation. The most preferred location among several options was Barangay Cogon, Kaputian District, on the southernmost tip of Talikud Island, very far from tourism facilities. As for the mariculture park, Salacup said Arroyo and Yap had told the Thai businessmen that the Samal Island Mariculture Park facility was an excellent location with clean water and away from the typhoon belt, with reasonable rental rates plus available technical assistance from BFAR and the local government. Arroyo and Yap also cited the availability of marketing assistance from BFAR, local governments and non-government organizations; the availability of feeds, fingerlings, fish cages, trained manpower and other ancillary services; and the availability of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points-accredited fish processing plants. venntro March 2nd, 2009, 06:00 AM P5.1-B hydropower plant in Davao ready (http://http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/197405/p51-b-hydropower-plant-davao-ready) By Sarah Jane R. Hilomen DAVAO CITY — The R5.1-billion Hedcor Sibulan hydropower project in Barangay Sibulan, Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur will start commercial operations on Oct. 31, bouying up the communities around it which is expected to get an estimated R700 million in benefits over a period of several years. Rene Ronquillo, president of Hedcor, said the 42.5 megawatt power plant is a project of the Aboitiz Power which will utilize and harness the Sibulan and Baroring Rivers in the municipality of Sta. Cruz. Ronquillo said that during its operation, its sister firm, the Davao Light and Power Co. (DLPC), will be able to save R4.8 billion for the next 12 years. The energy generated from the power plant will be enough to supply about 294,000 households in Davao City, Panabo City, and municipalities of Carmen, Dujali, and Sto. Tomas of Davao del Norte, he said. Ronquillo said the plant will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 95,000 tons of carbon dioxide. At present, the company is constructing five drop intakes, more than 16 kilometers of steel conveyance pipes to divert the water from the rivers to the plant. Since work on the project started in September 2007, the power company has brought in other projects that benefit host communities in Sta. Cruz, including more than 44 kilometers of roads and road improvements worth about R250 million. It has also employed more than 1,000 locals for the pre-operation stage and committed to give 55 of them a training to oversee the plant’s operations once the operation starts. Local residents, mostly indigenous peoples of the Bagobo and Tagabawa tribes, are hired to work in the plant. Also, the company set up a watershed management and reforestation program for 1,000 hectares of land within the Mt. Apo Natural Park and had it planted with trees. Rural electrification, potable water supply, scholarship, and medical mission are also part of the corporate social commitments made by the company for the community. Sta. Cruz Mayor Joel Ray Lopez said the project is “a leap of progress” in the municipality with an estimated R700-million contribution to be poured in by the power project into the community. Lopez said the project is expected to provide R20 million in annual tax revenues once it becomes operational. Of that amount, 35 percent will go to the municipal government, 20 percent to the barangays, and the rest to the provincial government. venntro March 2nd, 2009, 06:01 AM That was dubbed during the 1930's by the olden generation when Japanese settlers peaked to as much as 20,000 in population in Davao.
