Businessman offers help to address city’s flooding (http://http://www.mindanaotimes.com.ph/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=807:businessman-offers-help-to-address-citys-flooding&catid=1:latest-news&Itemid=63)
Written by Rizalene P. Acac

A BUSINESSMAN volunteered to fly to Amsterdam to study the principles of its flood prevention mechanism and how it can be replicated to address land subsidence and flooding in Davao City.

Abdullah Aquino, chair of the American Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines-Davao City Chapter, made this pronouncement in yesterday’s City Peace and Order Council at the Grand Men Seng Hotel.

Aquino said the Dutch city, which for years went on building dams, canals, and dikes to prevent flooding, could be a good model for Davao to follow because of their similarities in topography.

In an interview with Times, he said as soon as he receives an authorization from Mayor Rodrigo Duterte he would be more than willing to undertake the task, adding that he could even pay for his accommodation and make use of the assistance of some relatives.

“I’ve already been there many times and I am very familiar with the place,” he added.

Duterte in his address during the council said flooding could not be totally solved even if the government installs short-term intervention measures.

“We cleaned the canals and we uproot the parks and it has lessened the floods,” he said.

The mayor said the problem of flooding would even worsen as more and more developments come in the city and it would have implications in the construction of the new drainage system.

Duterte said to make the system sufficient, the culverts that will be used should be as big as those located in Roxas Boulevard which would entail more allocation. “If I am going to buy lands to put these canals the city might spend P30 billion,” he added.

The mayor, however, welcomes Aquino’s offer although he has yet to authorize the businessman to act in behalf of the city.

Davao folk turn to prayer versus summary killings (http://http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=446855&publicationSubCategoryId=67)
By Edith Regalado Updated March 09, 2009 12:00 AM

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – Since Ash Wednesday, the local Catholic faithful have been praying the “Oratio Imperata” to heal the city from unabated summary killings.

The mandatory prayer will be recited on bended knees after Holy Communion for one year.

“It is to be done after Communion because Jesus is still sacramentally present, and on bended knees as a sign of humility,” Davao Archbishop Fernando Capalla said.

The “Oratio Imperata” took note of the “hatred and dislike of drug addicts and drug pushers, the senseless disregard of due process of law, the violent killing of mere suspects, the taking of the law into one’s hands, the lustful greed in the hooded killers on motorbikes, the baseless claim that there are no witnesses, the inhumane disrespect for life of the unborn from womb to tomb, and the unjust socio-political system that tolerates all these to happen.”

The city is still in shock over the brutal killing of Rebelyn Pitao, the 21-year-old daughter of New People’s Army (NPA) leader Leoncio Pitao, alias Commander Parago.

The young Pitao was snatched by armed men in Bago Aplaya here last Wednesday night. Her body bearing stab wounds and torture marks was found floating in a river in Carmen, Davao del Norte, about 30 kilometers from this city.

City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, however, said the Church prayer is incomplete, as it should also include the victims of criminals and drug addicts.

“The Church should also look at the helpless victims of these criminals and drug addicts. The Church should also pray for them,” he said.

THE MARCO POLO Polo Davao is set to present the best of Macau cuisine at Cafe Marco for the month of March.
Ed Tuazon, executive chef of the hotel said the “Flavors of Macau” will showcase a scrumptious array of Macanese food which is a combination of Portuguese cuisine and exotic spices of southern Chinese cooking.
“The Macanese cuisine is also a mix of African, Malaysian and Brazilian cuisines,” he said adding that the hodge podge of influence is due to the city being a berthing port.
Tuazon said Macau cuisines will suit the taste buds of Filipinos since it is not too spicy like the cuisines of neighboring countries.
The opening day on March 11 will present the signature Macanese dishes such as Carne Porco a Alentejana (Roast crown of Pork with Chorizo and Clams), Galinha a Cafeal (Roast African Chicken), Bacalhau (Salt Cod) specialties, Feijoada (Pork and kidney bean stew), Arroz Gordo (Pilaf rice with cured meats and sausages), Arroz Pilau (Pilaf rice with chorizo, chicken, raisins, and fried shallots), Cataplana (Macanese Seafood stew), among others.
The desserts would include Lord Stow’s egg tart, Batatada (Potato cake), Pudim de Manga (Mango Pudding), Bebinca de Laite (Coconut Milk Set Custard), Molotoff (Meringue with Sweet Egg yolk sauce), and Bolo Minino (Nut cake).
Tuazon said Macau flavors is a national promotion related to its 10th year anniversary of independence from Great Britain. The promotion was started off with Marco Polo Plaza in Cebu yesterday.

I agree. I heard mass yesterday sa St. Paul...I was shocked with the lack of balance with the prayer offered for drug pushers...sana, meron din prayer sa mga buhay na nasira ng drugs and mga rape/murder victims because of this evil.
well, lets hope everything ends well.

Developer pours in P30M for housing, resort
Monday, March 9, 2009

By Joy Romares-Sevilla

A PROPERTY developer will embark on an eight-year real estate and resort development project in Mintal, Davao City.

In an interview Friday, JJ Atencio, president of Housing Development Corp., told reporters the company will initially invest P30 million for its housing and resort project.

The project will involve the construction of the biggest wake boarding facility in Southeast Asia and is expected to boost the local tourism industry.

Housing Development Corp. is the developer of Deca Homes in Davao.

"We started with the project two weeks ago. We are investing in Davao City because we are optimistic about the future of the city," Atencio said, adding the project will entail the development of a 125-hectare property, five hectares of which will be for a wake board facility.

Atencio said the project, with its wake board facility, is something new for Davao City. A wake board is a smaller version of a surfboard.

"I am not after foreign tourism...I am doing this the local tourism industry. I want Dabawenyos to experience wake boarding," Atencio said.

"We will make the experience affordable. We are thinking of a P500 fee for the whole day. The P30 million is just an initial investment. We can always expand the business. There's still a lot of room for improvement," he said.

Atencio said he believes people should invest more during depressed times.

"We are happy to note that the real estate industry in the Philippines is not as complicated as the US. The crisis in the US is severe because the major drivers of its economy, the real estate and financial sectors, were hit," he said.

shocker

btw, is mandatory prayer compelling the faithful by force who may have different perspective and meaning on the whole issue opposite the human conviction of local catholic church leaders? dont get me wrong me too is a catholic but i just find the "imposition" of oratio imperata no different from coercion. self sacrifices in whole new different meaning. sad

this is not to downplay the anguish of grieving and mourning family of the daughter of armed combatant rebel leader neither to disrespect the victim. for the sake of the issue. i have question in mind that kept on asking myself today. whats so special about this case to the media. hows this case different from from those in the mountains hogtieds whos lives were put under the heartless hands by mere suspicion sentenced to undergo violently deaths burried like pigs with no dignities.

whos indebted with blood of countless souls terrorising the dirtpoor starving families of a once tranquil remote villages.

im against militarisation of rural villages but military does not put its presence in places where there are no presence of lawless/?outlawd armed rebels destroying livelihoods and infrastructures of the public and with threaths to kill

^^ for me, I semi-expected the Church to have that stance. Ksi, I expect them to not compromise when it comes to morality. Pero, it sounded partial lang sa akin, ksi when one talks about summary killings of drug pushers/lords, I bet, mas madami din napatay ang mga drug lords and definitely they do it without due process as well...for sure, they should include the victims of this social disease in their prayers too. :)

it appeared tpo me like the churced id overwhelmed by the sensationalised tabloid stories of tabloid journalists that painted scenarios at its extremes. i find somethings really not right anymore how media is controlling public sentiments. there are reasons to believe most if not all have problems in expressing their gathered informations into a story without prejudice of creating a confusing reality of the true scenario on the ground. its either lack of skill or language incompetence. whot they might have thought was conveyed correctly without thinking they were completely misunderstood.

"I was working in Hong Kong at the time, and the local newspapers gave the impression that the Philippines was a war-torn country. But nothing could be further from the truth—the trip was one of the greatest experiences of my life. The Philippines is one of the most beautiful countries on Earth, and the people are warm and friendly. Everywhere we went, we were greeted with smiles and small talk. We drove more than 1,500 miles, and though we did meet gun-toting rebels, they posed for photos and bought us Cokes at a small stand made of straw, along the highway on the island of Samar. And we also met a nun who had been kidnapped and released a few days earlier in Mindanao. Other than that, we didn't see nearly as much strife as I had anticipated.

When I came back, I wrote an article entitled "Where's the War?" I pointed out that the media makes things sound worse than they really are, because a firefight is news, whereas people going about their normal routine is not. But the attention on the war had an unfortunate economic impact: Fewer people traveled to the Philippines for tourism, and foreign companies declined to invest."

Inventions expo opens
Tuesday, March 10, 2009

By Joy Romares-Sevilla

THE 2009 Mindanao Invention Contest and Expo (Mice) opened Monday at the Event Centre of SM City Davao with around 100 exhibitors showcasing various innovations.

The event, which will culminate on March 11, 2009, was staged back to back with the Davao Inventors Week that will be observed from March 9 to 14.

In a press conference Monday at Roadhouse Cafe in SM City Davao, Adrian Cristobal Jr., Intellectual Property Philippines Office (Ippo) director general, said people in Mindanao are very creative and that inventors in the island should be educated further on their rights, especially on how to manage intellectual property (IP) assets.

Cristobal was invited to deliver a keynote speech during the event.

"Mindanao is very rich in innovations and inventions, but what is lacking is public awareness and education," Cristobal said, adding that from 2001 to 2008, at least 185 patents from Mindanao were filed before Ippo.

The opening of the IP Philippines satellite office in Davao City last year, at the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-Southern Mindanao building, has been opportune for those who want to apply for patents without the hassle of having to go to Manila, he added.

"This year, we are also opening satellite offices in General Santos, Pampanga, and in Legaspi City," Cristobal said.

Cristobal said Ippo was already able to streamline its operation and its processing of patents for inventions. He said in the past, an inventor had to wait for about eight and a half years before he could get patent rights for his invention.

"But since 2005, we were able to streamline...to four and a half years to five years, this is quite good. (We are using) the International Standards system which processes documents from four years to four and a half years," he said.

Intellectual property office inks deal with stakeholders
Tuesday, March 10, 2009

THE Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines partnered with five organizations to strengthen IP services in Mindanao during the 2009 Mindanao Invention Contest and Expo (Mice) that opened Monday at SM City Davao Event Centre.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed by IP Philippines with Philippine Exporters Confederation Inc., Council of Deans of Engineering Education in Region 11, Mindanao Inventors Federation Inc., Davao Inventors Association, and Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (DCCCII).

In a press conference Monday, lawyer Adrian Cristobal Jr., IP Philippines director general, said the MOU serves as a seal of alliance between IP Philippines and the five organizations in promoting creativity and innovation not only in Davao Region but in the whole Mindanao island.

"The agreements that we sign today with our various IP stakeholders strengthen our commitment to nurture a sustainable public-private partnership for IP nationwide," he said.

Based on a press release, part of the agreement will be for IP Philippines to provide resource personnel who will share technical expertise and IP information materials to assist groups in integrating IP into its programs.

The five organizations also agree to design and implement IP-related programs, in close collaboration with IP Philippines, to encourage and facilitate the acquisition of IP rights and commercialization of IP creations.

"These MOUs with IP stakeholders will further spur innovation," Cristobal said. "Unlike in the 1990s when innovation was always about technology, innovation today is not necessarily associated with a particular technology. It is about reinventing business processes and building entirely new markets for untapped customer needs. It's about executing the right ideas and bringing them to the market quickly."

IP Philippines promotes creativity and innovation through the country's intellectual property system. It grants patents and trademarks, supports the creative industries, and advocates a vibrant IP culture. (JGRS/With press release)

As per reliable source, this is not yet the final design. The condominium complex will have at least one ten-storey building. :)

hindi ko pala makita si eagowl... parang nawawala, hindi kaya naiwan sa hotel :dunno:

where dafet?

Hindi naman po na cancel. Clear skies naman po when we took off. I would have spent the night sa Dallas airport.

Buti na lang at na delay ng konti yung 3:30 flight from Chicago. Nakahabol pa ako. Hiningal ako sa pagtakbo, ang layo pa naman ng gate.

72nd Araw ng Dabaw
celebration opens

The Araw ng Dabaw, the city’s celebration of its 72nd charter anniversary, officially opened yesterday with the “DAWOW” Grand Opening Ceremony at Quezon Park in front of City Hall.

The program kicked off with a musical presentation by the Davao Community Band and Blue Velvet Band, followed by a prayer rendered into song by the Davao Boys Choir, Matina Central ES Choir and UIC Chorale.

A thanksgiving prayer was led by Carlito Guinto Jr. representing the indigenous community, Samrah Nuh representing the Muslim community, and Archimedes Udaundo representing the Christian community, symbolizing the city’s multi-cultural population.

After the prayers, “Bahaghari Tayo,” the celebration’s official theme, was performed by popular Dabawenyo artist and the song’s composer Popong Landero together with the Davao Community Band, Blue Velvet Band, and the Kaliwat Theater Collective.

Kaliwat Theater Collective, Davao Community Band, Blue Velvet Band, Davao Boys Choir, Matina Central ES Choir, UIC Chorale, Madayaw Cultural Troupe, and students from Magallanes Elementary School then shared the stage for the “Dabaw: Sulyap Salaysay” production number.

Sammy Uy, this year’s co-chair of the celebration’s Executive Committee (EXE-COM), delivered the Pagpapasalamat speech while councilor Myrna Dalodo-Ortiz and Lafayette Lim, EXECOM vice-chair, spoke on the theme and introduced the EXECOM members of this year’s celebration.

This was followed by the “Ang Dakilang Pangako” number performed by local artist Juliet Bahala together with the Davao Boys Choir, UIC Chorale, Matina Central ES Choir, Blue Velvet Band, Davao Community Band and Kaliwat.

Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, who is the chair of Araw ng Dabaw 2009 EXECOM, delivered the celebratory address while Ortiz and Uy raised the theme.

The program, hosted by Oscar Casaysay and Mutya ng Dabaw 2004 Aileen Cainglit, closed with the community singing of the “Tayo’y Dabawenyo.”

The 72nd Araw ng Dabaw celebration highlights include the Museo Daba-wenyo DUHWOW : DABAW Exhibit Opening (March 10, 10 a.m., Museo Dabawenyo), Kalasikas Cultural Performances (March 10-16, 6-9 p.m., People’s Park), PAGTUGYAN: Yuchengco Scholarship Program Launching (March 12, 3 p.m., Rizal Park), Unveiling of Datu Bago Mural (March 12, 5 p.m., Museo Dabawenyo), SALIDAbaw: MTV Finals (March 13, 3 p.m., Gaisano Mall), Mutya ng Dabaw Coronation Night (March 14, 6 p.m., CAP Auditorium), Sayawan sa Da’n (March 15, 2-8 p.m., from Legazpi St., Rizal St., Bolton St., San Pedro St., to City Hall Drive), Pasasalamat: Thanksgiving Mass (March 16, 6 a.m., San Pedro Cathedral), Parada Dabawenyo (March 16, 8 a.m.-12 n.n., from Magsaysay Ave., CM Recto Ave., Bonifacio St., Legaspi St., San Pedro St. to Quimpo Blvd.), Banda Hudyaka: Showdown Presentation (March 16, 2 p.m., People’s Park), Dickies presents: Pahalipay ni Mayor Concert featuring Slapshock (March 16, 7 p.m., Rizal Park). CBCP: Davao catholic school gets bomb threats (http://http://www.gmanews.tv/story/152085/CBCP-Davao-catholic-school-gets-bomb-threats)
03/10/2009 | 03:14 PM

MANILA, Philippines - A Catholic school in Davao City was forced to suspend classes Tuesday after receiving two bomb threats Monday, the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines said Tuesday.

The CBCP Web site (www.cbcpnews.com) said the Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) received the bomb threats through two phone calls.

“We are celebrating the Araw ng Davao next week and we are looking at the possibility that there are groups who want to undermine the peace and order," said HCDC President Dr. Ma. Iris Melliza.

She said the first call was received at 8:15 a.m., and the second at about 2 p.m., with both calls directed to the Finance Office.

Melliza said that as precautionary measures, the administration personnel, faculty and students were ordered to vacate the building.

Melliza also said she immediately made a call to some member schools of Davao Association of Colleges and Schools (DACS) to inform them of the bomb threats.

“We also have to warn them that we received bomb threats so that they can also prepare and heighten their security," she said.

Melliza said they couldn’t specifically point out the motives behind the bomb threats.

She said what happened in the campus is indeed a learning experience for the administration to further heighten security measures. - GMANews.TV

Davao, Iloilo cited as
world’s top BPO hubs

A global network firm of professional services providing audit, tax and advisory services in 145 countries cited the cities of Davao and Iloilo in its list of top 31 cities worldwide.

The report from KPMG global network said the 31 cities are currently eyed as alternatives for outsourcing by companies in the wake of overburdened telecommunications infrastructure and overstretched labor markets in traditional offshore locations.

The KPMG report also said that Davao, Iloilo and the other eight cities it cited in the Asia-Pacific region offer lower costs, younger populations, and government incentives such as easy work permits.

A more important factor, which the KPMG found in the Top Ten outsourcing cities in Asia-Pacific Region, is the proportion of computer graduates, the number of research and development institutions, the rate of migration to the cities, and common languages with their target markets, the report further said.

The 10 cities in the Asia-Pacific region, which KPMG named, as the ones to watch in the outsourcing boom are Ahmedabad, India; Brisbane, Australia; Changsha, China; Hangzhou, China; Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; Jaipur, India; Nagpur, India; and Penang, Malaysia; and the cities of Davao and Iloilo in the Philippines.

The cities cited in America are Boise, Idaho, USA; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Calgary, Alberta, Canada; Campinas, Brazil; Curitiba, Brazil; Guadalajara, Mexico; Indianapolis, Ind., USA; Queretaro, Mexico; Santiago, Chile; and Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

In Europe, the Middle East and Africa are Belfast, Ireland; Belgrade, Serbia; Cairo, Egypt; Cluj-Napoca, Romania; Gdansk, Poland; Lviv, Ukraine; Port Louis, Mauritius; Rostov-on-Don, Russia; Sofia, Bulgaria; Tunis, Tunisia; and Zagreb, Croatia.

Technology news site, CNET News, also dubbed Davao and Iloilo cities as among the top 10 outsourcing centers in Asia Pacific and among the top 30 in the world.*PNA

. . .

Entrepreneurs are optimistic anew at business prospects in this part of the country. The economic situation, at least here in Southern Mindanao, has been stable with no significant sign of adverse impact from the global crisis after about three months when property developers slowed down work, reviewed plans and waited for some odd market behavior.

Unlike in the late 1990s when the Asian financial crisis and the Estrada administration’s all-out war against Moro rebels hit Mindanao’s economy hard, everything appears normal nowadays. There are no long rows of closed commercial shops or huge banners in front of hotels and department stores offering big discounts just to attract customers. There are no rumors yet of loan defaults of local entrepreneurs.

Around this city’s central business district where most shops are located, consumer spending seems to ignore the crisis trumpeted daily by media reports. Construction activities have resumed in areas left idle in the past three months.

The 12-storey Central Park Hotel across Gaisano Mall of Davao is almost completed and, if rushed, could open before the Kadayawan Festival in mid-August. Robinsons’ Cybergate Davao, an information technology and shopping center near the Floirendo’s Damosa complex, would be in business by June to coincide with the opening of the family’s new mall in General Santos City.

Work has resumed at the Ayala-Floirendo joint project called Abreeza, a mixed-use development in Davao City’s Bajada district. Work has restarted in condominium communities constructed by Filinvest behind SM City Davao and by D. M. Consunji along Bolton Extension near city hall.

At least two retail chains that specialize on low-priced computers and computer supplies and electronics are bullish on this city’s business prospects and are opening at least three shops within the near term to target the price-sensitive market that includes transients from nearby regions.

Southern Mindanao’s consumers generally prefer low-priced but good-quality products over those that rely mainly on looks or packaging. This is the reason traders of new and used surplus goods from Japan and South Korea, as well good quality ukay-ukay (used clothing) have been quite successful here.

Goyz, I posted this at the "new capital for the Philippines" thread. wonders if these would interest you.

Add to that, one of the reasons why many indigenous peoples smoothly converted to Christianity because their ancient religion were already attuned to Christian belief system. I once inquired with a tribal leader and he said that. Their ancestors also worshipped akin to Holy trinity, with Father, Son, Holy Spirit. The latter was somehow profoundly related with Mother nature, hence their deep respect for Nature. I believe their spiritual belief were even older than Christianity itself, and may be traced back to the Hindu Krishna.

It was from my personal research. The historians in this country are not doing enough and should do more research about our pre-colonial history. Mindanao (Southern Mindanao most likely) may perhaps be one of the earliest settlements in the country much older than the time of Spanish colonization or Islamic conversion.

Talking about new capital for the country, hmm...

Wow! I can't wait for 158 DB to open! Not only first in Mindanao, but first outside MM as well. It is a good indication of the spending propensity of Davaoenos.

Ano na lang kaya kapag nagbukas na ang Ayala Center and SM Mall of Mindanao??? I am pretty sure we would be seeing more highend brands opening shops in Davao.

What else can I say? Davao is truly the shopping mecca of the Philippine south.

ICTSI posted full-year revenue from port operations of P20.60 billion, an increase of 37 percent over the P15 billion reported last year while Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortization (EBITDA) of P8.74 billion, up 46 percent from the P5.99 billion earned in 2007.

"In spite of the weak global economy in much of 2008, ICTSI has delivered excellent full year results. However, we do not expect to be immune to the deteriorating economic situation and the resulting pronounced downturn in global trade, and thus we expect 2009 to be a more difficult year," said ICTSI chairman Enrique K. Razon Jr.

ICTSI handled consolidated volume of 3.73 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2008, 24 percent higher compared to the 3 million TEUs handled in 2007.

Domestic operations accounted for 1.91 million TEUs, or 51 percent of consolidated volumes for the full year. Volume from domestic operations grew by 18 percent in 2008 mainly due to a 10 percent volume increase at Manila International Container Terminal (MICT), a 20 percent increase at Davao Integrated Port and Stevedoring Services Corp. (DIPSSCOR), the additional volume from the company’s new port operations in Misamis Oriental, southern Philippines, and the consolidation of the volume of South Cotabato Integrated Port Services Inc. (SCIPSI), its port in General Santos City, South Cotabato, Philippines.

Balut Island Hot Spring

DAVAO CITY — Many among us live our today anticipating our deadlines and wishing we could stop the clock. Or maybe slow it down some. Well, if we can’t do a Hiro Nakamura, we could instead recognize that time flows another way in some places.

If you’re a weekday warrior with PhP2,000 to burn and a weekend to spare, take the late Saturday afternoon bus to General Santos City, stop for a quick dinner downtown, then head on down to Lion’s Beach port to catch the M/V Song of Dolly for its midnight-to-dawn run to Balut Island. As the ferry approaches the island, the saffron-streaked Sunday sky unfolds before your eyes. You have 14 hours to explore and take pictures of Balut and its neighboring islets before it’s time to catch the M/V Song of Dolly on its return trip to Gensan. Sleep on the bus and arrive in Davao in time for work on Monday morning.

That’s probably as close as you’ll ever get to Indonesia without a passport. Lucky you. You’ve been to paradise and most of the deadline-dreading drones you rub elbows with back in realtime don’t know it. They’ll be wondering why you’re wearing a self-satisfied smirk that’s very hard to wipe away.

Sometime this week, the Philippine Ports Authority will be turning over to the local government unit of Sarangani, Davao del Sur the completion of the PhP43 million Balut Port Expansion project in Mabila, Balut Island. The 300-day project rehabilitated the deteriorating structures to turn the Mabila facility into a functional port with adequate mooring, fendering, and dolphin-safe systems. The spanking new Roll-On Roll-Off ramp optimistically anticipates increased commercial and tourist traffic for these parts.

If that comes to pass, things may never be the same again in Balut Island.
But, really, while they are still the way they are, weekday warriors might find it a balm to the soul to touch base with this part of Beautiful Country Philippines before Balut and neighboring Sarangani Island turn into what passes for Boracay these days. For a song, locals would host you on homestay and feed you fresh lapu-lapu, cuttlefish, and fruits just off the tree, just like in Boracay 30 years ago.

Imagine pristine, white sand beaches nestled in quiet coves where the water is so calm and clear you can see bottom. The world is just one giant swimming pool and, unlike Boracay today, it’s seemingly all yours. Sarangani Island, Balut Island, and their neighboring islets have a resident population of 20,934 mostly distributed along its combined 57 kilometers of coastline, and most of them have something better to do than take a dip with you. Oh, you’ll probably see them going about their work and they would probably be keeping an eye on you, but if you want your privacy, you got it.

You’ll have to put up with a curious dugong or two though. After all, you’ll be the one to trespass on sea cow feeding grounds.
Should climbing hills and mountains be your thing, you can do that there, too. The islands are too small for you to get lost in. Follow the trails where your feet take you. Or, for PhP200, you can hire a motorbike to take you places. Word of warning, the road network to the interior and coastal barangays has been generally carved out by these bikes. It gets, uh, very adventurous in places although the bikes have been customized with the comfort of the passenger in mind – like, you can rest your feet. You’ll still bounce and jiggle all the way, but working out the physics is part of the fun.

Note also that in Mabila wharf where you’ll find them, there are only four bikers who have license to drive issued by the LTO. It doesn’t matter. People need to go places and a bike’s a bike. Oh, okay – you might find it prudent to check your insurance coverage as the nearest level 3 medical facility is five hours away in Gensan. City-slick pavement pounder. You’ve gotta live dangerously some time.

Going up the natural slopes and elevations, you’ll probably find some locals working on the coconut plantations. The economy here is all about coconut and copra. Corn production makes up so little to the figures on the local economy that it isn’t even worth a bit of mention. There’s also upland rice cultivation and small fishing, but those generally are for local consumption.

Talk has it that these coconuts were brought over by migrants from the neighboring Marori Island in Indonesia. Linda Macpal, a 58-year-old fourth-generation Indonesian settler in Sarangani Island, said her Sangil ancestors came here in 1918. In fluent Visayan that could shame this Karay-a who has been ten years in Visayan-speaking Davao, she said:
“Sarangani is just so near. They rowed from Marori, perhaps thinking this was still part of Indonesia. When they got here, they found there were Blaans in the highlands. They asked the Tenyente del Barrio to allow them to settle along the beach. They drew up an agreement where my ancestors were allowed to plant and cultivate along the coast so long as they pay annual taxes for the use of the land.”

She went on to explain that her ancestors would row back to Marori for the coconut seedlings. The Sangils and the Blaans were very friendly to each other. Soon, more Indonesian families joined the migration to Sarangani Island.

In Sangir, the language of the Marori people, Sereng-eni means “Here, we stop.” And there in the Sarangani Island they stopped and made their homes. Today, the Sangils make up almost 30 percent of the resident population in Sarangani Island.
Over the years, the coconuts from Marori Island came to be planted all over. Today, coconut and copra dominate the economic resource of the municipality. This makes Gensan, with the nearest coconut oil processing facility, the only trading partner of note for the Sarangani islands and islets.
Mayor Jerry Cawa is optimistic that the Balut Port in Mabila is going to bring in more economic development to the municipality. Some islanders, however, are wary of the changes to the islands and their ecology should outsiders have controlling economic interests on any of the islands’ promising potentials for tourism and trade.

But just now, Balut Island and its environs have preserved much of the natural beauty that has been its God-given birthright. It’s just exactly what a work-weary weekday warrior needs to connect to that which is good and, for the moment, still there.

Davao City sets aside 20,000 sq.m. for outsourcing investors

DAVAO CITY — With four companies applying for incentives, the city government expects to open 20,000 square meters of space for business process outsourcing (BPO) investors by the end of the year.Roberto U. Teo, head of the Davao City Investments Promotions Center, said four firms have already expressed intention to set up or convert existing buildings to cater to outsourcing business. He said the buildings are located in Damosa Land and Robinsons Land in Bajada district, the New City Commercial Center in Matina district and one in downtown Davao. The city government has been selling Damosa Land of the Floirendo Group, which was declared by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority as an information technology zone, along with the Pryce Towers in Landco, J.P. Laurel Street, south of the city, to potential locators in information and communications technology industry."We need to have a road map for Davao City so we’re making an inventory of what we have and what we need [in order] to find the gaps," he said.An ICT Task Force formed by the city government through Executive Order 16 has ordered the commission of a local survey, separate from the national government’s own road map. http://www.gmanews.tv/story/82705/Davao-City-sets-aside-20000-sqm-for-outsourcing-investors

Top Five Malls in Davao City

These are the five shopping malls in Davao City, Philippines. There are many other establishments in Davao but I think these are the top 5.

[5]Victoria Plaza

From Davao City International Airport, this is the nearest mall. I ranked it fifth because it's not anymore appealing to most people in Davao. In the late 90's, Victoria Plaza is the most popular mall in Davao. Now, it is still famous for having cheaper goods and for being accessible since it's right in the middle of the city.

[4]Gaisano South

Also known as JS citymall, G-south is tallest among the five malls in this top list. This 5-story building is the nearest from Davao City Hall. Being in the downtown area, it is also very accessible. Around G-south, you can find a lot of hotels, inns, fast food restaurants, hospital, and a park.

[3]NCCC Mall of Davao

It's the second and bigger NCCC in Davao. NCCC also have branches in different Davao provinces plus Palawan. In NCCC Davao you can enjoy watching movies in four of their cinemas. You can also opt to try their bowling alley if you want. The location of NCCC is not ideal. The atmosphere is upscale. The structure is simple. You won't get lost.

[2]Gaisano Mall of Davao

I think the owner of G-mall and G-south are cousins. Aside from these two Gaisanos, There are also other Gaisano establishments in the entire Davao region.

Gaisano Mall is the mall for the people. It's atmosphere and appearance say so. This 4-story building is located not very far from Victoria Plaza. It is surrounded by five different colleges so you should expect that you will see lots of students. You can also enjoy their cinema. There are six. If you want to buy groceries, you can go to the basement. All in all, there are 5 different floors to check. You can also enjoy the site in the atrium from different floors.

[1]SM City Davao

Also not in an ideal location but SM City Davao is one of the good to go malls I knew. To be honest, I don't enjoy going there but the atmosphere is not that heavy to carry. It's the only mall that makes me lost. It has a left and a right wing plus another wing in the middle, which if you are not familiar with the stores, you will not know which wing you are in. There are 3 cinemas each in both left and right wings. Contrary to the other malls, when you enter SM, the boy's entrance is on the right and not left.

Speaking in front of Gaisano City Mall, Ayala Mall gyud na siya bai. Floreindo never sold it to Henry Sy few years ago since mas malaki ang offer ng Ayala. Besides, it's like that Floirendo and Ayala will have parnertship.

Since Ayala's Abreeza Davao is 5 years plan ahead than Ayala Mall here in CdeO, so Abreeza will be the first to be built. When I was there in Davao, I witnessed the vast golf course to be turned into an Ayala Center. Some people out there even said that may kasama pang Ayala subdivision. Anyway, Abreeza was temporarily stopped. But recently coming mismo from the Ayala bros, may go signal na sila to resume the construction of Abreeza as soon as possible.

Anyway, no exact date when gagawin ang Ayala Mall here in CdeO. But the Ayala bros, Don Fernando and Jaime already promised to Donkoy (when Donkoy personally visited the Ayala bros in Makati last, last week) that they would definitely pursue their mall project here. ^^

Well, I just want to mention it here since there are some rude people here want to cloud the validity of the project and even bullying our most respected politician here. Hehehe. Okey lang na. At least in CdeO, our politicians aren't onion skin and Donkoy is a staunch supporter of Press Freedom. Criticisms are welcome. He's not dictator anyway. Walang media practitioner or even karaniwang tao na namamatay pagkatapos magbitiw na maanhang na salita. :)

Di ko iniinbento ang storya na eto. It's just I have some personal contacts who are really connected to Ayala. Hope naclear ko ang issue regarding sa tanong mo.

Ganyan kasi talaga. If a locality is not the primary choice of investors, the local officials have to exert extra effort to invite. Sa case naman ng Davao, sitting pretty lang mga officials natin. Ang investors na mismo ang lumalapit kasi prime investment area ang Davao, being the commercial hub of Mindanao.

your quote to~ "new capital for the Philippines"

Mt.Apo pasensya it's just now I got online. I think it was deleted from the thread, wonders why. Mabuti na lang nai-save ko dito.

I think the thread was just discussing about possible scenarios about 'new capital' just for the sake of it and not necessary that it needs to be pursued. Pero, relative to the Davao thread, we can actually perceive the influence of Davao not just on economic potential but also finding strength with our rich history more ancient pa gani before the Spaniards or Muslim influence entered the country. Southern Mindanao may be one of the earliest settlements in the country. I read before in a newspaper article the early migrants here can be traced back as early as 5th century AD and landed in Southern Mindanao (presently Sultan Kudarat). The ten bornean datus of Panay by 1250 AD na man during the Sri-Vijayan era. The first mosque in Sulu was already built 1310. In the modern era, Davao City has the most number of indigenous tribes whose cultures had survived for centuries and still thrives even today.

In the modern era, Davao can make a difference in its role with the BIMP EAGA regions (considering that among its other regions, Davao city may be the more metropolitan in ambiance) as a major international gateway not just economicaly, culturally, but also historicaly when we trace back again our very ancient roots. This is necessary if we wish to build our nation by expanding our consciousness with our rich past, and Davao's influence can contribute greatly.

Biggest wake board sport facility in Southeast Asia to rise in Davao/ March 12, 2009

A HOUSING developer will infuse an initial budget of P30=million for the construction of a Wake Board sport facility within a 125-hectare housing project in Mintal, Davao City.

JJ Atencio, president of 8990 Housing Development Corporation, said the Wake Board project, which construction is now underway, lies within the five-hectare portion of the entire housing subdivision project in Mintal named Deca Homes Esperanza.

Atencio described the project as “something new in Davao City and the biggest in Southeast Asia.”
:applause:

He said the project is targeted to be completed in June, while the subdivision is eyed to be fully completed in the next four years.

are you suggesting the Philippine Capital be transferred here? nah i guess it's not a good idea, the way how our government is set-up and its not already a "norm" to established the national government here just for the sake of it's prestige well AFAIK Quezon City was not known bec it's the former capital but by its good governance.:)

imo the new capital should not be influenced by old politics, regional biases and even religious influences. the farther from Manila is better.

not really, nagsakay-sakay lang sa title sa thread kay puro luzon-visayas area lang man pirme gishisgutan, so I aired some ideas regarding historical and strategic advantages of the city regarding feasibility. But in a more 'realistic' point of view, the city should preferably position itself as the country's international service center and gateway to a much larger scope, the BIMP EAGA being strategically located, replete with more efficient facilities and infrastructures that must be supported.

Davao Region is pilot
area for Smart Infoboard
BY JUDY QUIROS

Smart Communications Inc. in partnership with the Department of Tourism (DOT) 11 regional office has identified Davao Region as pilot area for its “Infoboard” project.

To start this Friday, the Infoboard is a web-based solution that enables to address queries and tourist concerns, provide general information, advisories, and announcements; provide user specific data like the places to dine, activities, tourist attractions, conduct polls and surveys, etc.

DOT 11 regional director Sonia Garcia said the project will give about 36 million Smart subscribers nationwide information on the various destinations in Davao Region.

Smart and DOT signed a memorandum of agreement in relation to the above project.

Mon Isberto, head PLDT-Smart Public Affairs said, Smart is embarking the project with DOT for free, as part of the company’s effort to help the local government units and local tourism sector of the Davao Region in promoting it as a tourism destination.

Garcia said the project is supposed to cost P2.5 million.

Bong Mojica, Smart Wireless Consumer division head for his part said, they are piloting the project in Davao Region because it is the region’s local tourism sector who initiated the project.

He said, they will only expand to other areas in the country upon the initiative of local officials.

Garcia said, tourism-related establishments who want to be included in the Smart Infoboard List should register with DOT 11.

She said the project will encourage more tourism-related establishments to register with DOT in order to avail of the free advertising and marketing strategy through the Smart Infoboard.

Registrations will start on Friday, Garcia said.

Davaoeños and tourists who want to access on the said project should get a copy of the list of establishments and their respective Smart codes with DOT 11 or from Smart.

Tunalicious!
Posted on 11 March 2009 by Blogie in Eatery

It’s very refreshing to see food establishments in Davao that come out and offer new things to stimulate the taste buds — those that veer away from the typical chicken barbecue that you see all around. This is what my friends and I have discovered at Tunalicious, a relatively new ‘native’ restaurant in town.

From the outside, the place doesn’t look very impressive (especially because there’s still some construction going on around it). Also because it looks much like all the chicken-barbecue places out there. The tables and chairs aren’t anything you might find terribly comfortable, and the surroundings look decidedly low-budget. But the food–! Delicious!
Pinutos na Adobong Baboy

I had the Pinutos na Pork Adobo, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. They have 3 kinds of Pinutos: pork adobo, chicken adobo and, of course, grilled tuna. And get this — the price tag on this dish? Only ₱38 for a generous plate of rice and meat (or fish) wrapped in banana leaf! I loved the banana-leaf-infused flavor of the steamed rice, which was cooked just right. For the price, I wasn’t expecting it to be that good, but it was.

I was able to talk to the manager, Rainier Bello, and he said something that made a lot of sense. He said that, instead of offering “unlimited rice” — a common tactic hereabouts to attract patrons — they decided to serve the Pinutos dishes with a healthy amount of rice. Aside from the fact that rice isn’t cheap anymore, large intakes of rice isn’t really very good for the body.

I will surely be back to sample the other Pinutos (which literally means “wrapped”) dishes soon!

The Sinuglaw (₱108) was also quite enjoyable. The tuna was very fresh, and the grilled pork blended quite nicely in the whole ensemble. Sinuglaw is a concatenation of “sinugba” (’grilled (pork)’) and “kinilaw” (the term used to mean ‘eating raw food’, usually fish).

The vinegar they use in their Sinuglaw is sukang tuba. It’s the kind that comes from ‘coconut wine’ — fermented coconut sap. And they don’t scrimp on the ingredients: chili, radish, cucumber and everything that makes kinilaw a uniquely Filipino appetizer.

Tuna Chicharon

True to their name, Tunalicious also serves Tuna Bopis (₱88), Tuna Sisig (₱88), even Tuna Chicharon (₱68)! Rainier, who has helped set up other restaurants in Davao City, said that they really want to specialize in various tuna preparations, to provide Davao with a healthier dining alternative.

The Tuna Chicharon was good. It tasted just like the real thing. And, it’s guilt-free! But the Tuna Bopis was rather fishy… Their sisig, however, was a hit. Even Andrew, who gets queasy about unfamiliar food, found it to his liking.

Tunalicious is actually just one of the shops in what is now known as “The Strip” at the old “The Venue” (couldn’t they get even more generic??). The place is on Jacinto Extension, across the road from the Bangko Sentral complex. But, Tunalicious seems to be the one that people look for when they go there. Aside from their tuna dishes, they also have what they call Sabaw Republic, or their line of stimulating soup dishes for the after-party market, if you know what I mean. ;)

Tunalicious is open daily, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, then from 5:00 to 11:00 PM. Sabaw Republic, on the other hand, is open until 4 in the morning — although, Rainier said they’re thinking of keeping it open until 8:00 AM in the near future.

yup i took the shot. (for reference look closely at the near center of the cavern, may tao sa sulod naglingkod) the falls is not really high, approximately 20 ft as you mentioned from water level, pero there's something in its shape that makes her beautifuly unique. it's also constantly 'growing' and there seemed always something 'new' to see in the place.

nakaapan lang kay on the left bank nagdinamak ra ang agi sa caretaker sa mga cottage kay mura'g wala giatiman ang basura, in stark contrast to the right side in which the other caretaker kept it cleaner. there seemed two separate caretakers assigned to the place, and even the child who belonged to the right showed concern as he complained sa kahugaw sa pikas, just like any environmentaly concerned individual would, even for his age.

Tourism gab offers job opportunities
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

EMPLOYMENT opportunities in the tourism industry were offered in Thursday's Tourism Related Industry Congress (Tricon) at the Grand Regal Hotel, Davao City.

The congress was organized by the Davao Region Tourism Council headed by Alma Uy of Tagum City and in partnership with the Department of Tourism (DOT) Southern Mindanao. The congress aims to address industry concerns specifically the effects of the economic crisis on tourism.

DOT Southern Mindanao Regional Director Sonia Garcia earlier said the region was able to register a 10 to 11 percent increase in tourist arrivals in 2008 as compared to 2007. A total of 648,439 tourists visited the region in 2008, as compared to 584,792 visitors the previous year.

Topics such as sustainable tourism and alternative tourism livelihood were discussed to further maintain, if not improve, the tourism situation in the region.

On the other hand, part of the congress was the official launching of the Tourism Info board, a web-marketing and text marketing project in partnership with Smart Telecommunications.

Uy told reporters in Wednesday's edition of the Club 888 press forum at Marco Polo Davao that the project is a great opportunity for Tagum City to promote its industries.

"Tagum has a series of festivals. It is a big help for us if these are properly promoted," she said.

Aside from the launching of the Tourism Info board and the presentation of opportunities in the tourism industry, one of the highlights of the congress also included tourism business matching and "table top" selling among tourism properties, tour operators and travel agents.

Gov’t agencies launch programs vs global crunch

THE National Economic Development Authority (Neda) in Davao Region on Wednesday cited major activities undertaken by government agencies in the region to mitigate effects of the global financial crisis.

In her presentation at the Philippine Economic Briefing held at Marco Polo Davao on Wednesday, Maria Lourdes Lim, Neda Southern Mindanao regional director and vice-chair of the Regional Development Council (RDC) 11, identified interventions initiated by the regional offices of the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole), the Department of Public Works and Highways; Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (Owwa), the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda), the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

Lim said as of February this year, Dole-Southern Mindanao was able to undertake six significant programs, which included the setting up of global financial crisis hotlines and help desks that assist displaced workers and affected overseas Filipino workers; the multi-sectoral consultation on the effects of the global financial crisis in Davao's eight priority industries and the multi-sectoral consultation for crisis-affected workers in selected agri-based industries.

Lim said stakeholders from banana, coconut, mango, ICT, tourism, seaweeds, wood, rubber, abaca, tuna and pineapple industries participated in the multi-sectoral consultations.

"The labor department in the region was also able to conduct business planning for OFWs, rubber forum, skills, profiling and livelihood counseling for displaced workers of Apex Mining Corp. and conducted emergency employment on coconut rehabilitation under the Tulong Panghanapbuhay," she said.

For the DPWH-Southern Mindanao, Lim said the department was able to initiate PGMA's Job Fair wherein 202 jobs were generated on the spot. DPWH also conducted a routine maintenance of carriage and roadside of national roads and bridges which generated 471 jobs and maintained 1,413 kilometers of road network.

The Owwa, on the other hand, has conducted a provision of livelihood loans in Davao City. The event, Lim said, afforded 10 OFWs in the region with loans totaling to P500,000.

The agency also had scholarship grants and Tech/Voc training referrals to Tesda wherein 41 OFWs were provided with skills for employment scholarships and 14 were referred to Tesda. It was also able to conduct referrals to POEA for overseas jobs placement. A total of 36 OFWs affected with the crisis in the region were referred to POEA.

As for the activities undertaken by Tesda, Lim said the agency has awarded 75 Presidential Scholarship Vouchers to OFWs and 25 vouchers were given to displaced local workers of Apex Mining in the region.

It also conducted business planning workshops for displaced OFWs in Davao City and conducted youth profiling for starting careers.

"For the youth profiling, the beneficiaries were out-of-school-youths, unemployed adults, displaced local workers and OFWs," Lim said.

The PNP has also done its part to cushion the impact of the global financial crisis. It initiated livelihood training seminars for 143 PNP 11 personnel; conducted lectures on financial services/packages of various lending institutions which benefited 31 PNP personnel and implemented the PNP clean and green program which output includes the production of vegetables for family consumption.

For DENR, the department was able to conduct reforestation activities within eight priority watersheds implemented last year. A total of 550 persons benefited from the activity. It has also distributed land titles under its Handog Titulo Program in which 52 poor families were able to benefit

DDH offers first cardiology training
Mindanao Daily Mirror
March 13, 2008

To further improve patient care, the Heart Institute is opening its doors for specialists (under the First Adult Cardiology Fellowship Training Program in Mindanao) who wish to focus their practice in cardiology, with particular respect to adult cases.

The Heart Institute is the only heart care facility in Mindanao that has been accredited by the Philippine Heart Association and Philippine College of Cardiology to offer Fellowship training for cardiologists. This means that the Institute has the implements for already licensed doctors to train even further in a specialized area of cardiology.

Doctors who wish to take part in this milestone training may submit the required documents (letter of application, transcript of records, letter of recom-mendation from two former professors/mentors, diploma of IM residency training and PCP diplomate certificate) to the DDH Heart Institute Secretariat-Medical Staff Organization Office, 11th floor Medical Tower Building, E. Quirino Avenue, Davao City with telephone numbers 221-2101 loc 679 or 221-0917.

Date of exams will be on March 20 (Friday) at 1 o’clock in the afternoon and the interview will be on Saturday, March 21 at 1 p.m. Training will commence on April 1.

Davao Doctors Hospital’s commitment in bringing quality care to the Dabawenyo’s well-being is always at the top-of-mind of the institution. And with the Fellowship training for specialists catering exclusively to heart patients’ needs in place at the Heart Institute, the quality of care is taken another notch higher.

Clear Men basketball event comes to Davao
Friday, March 13, 2009

PREPARATIONS are underway for the staging of the Clear Men Future League in Davao City set sometime in April or May.

Tanny Gonzalez and Autie Villarama of Basketball TV told members of the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) during their weekly forum at the Tower Inn Thursday that the league will launch five legs this year.

Villarama said similar legs will be held in the cities of Cebu and Baguio, Bian and Manila.

"This is the first time we're bringing the league to the countryside, bringing it to Davao. This is a different kind of tournament in the sense that a team would still have five core players but with only one substitute," Villarama said.

Gonzalez added that new rules will govern the tournament which is to be televised.

"We will have a coaches' workshop before we go on with the tournament. That's what we usually do so they can ask all questions there and we can be assured of a hassle-free league," Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez cited the talent and strength of Dabawenyos in the sport, which was the reason they picked Davao as one of the league's stops.

Clear Men shampoo, a product of Unilever Philippines, is bankrolling the league that offers attractive cash prizes and an all-expense paid trip to Manila for the winning team.

Registration is P2,000 per team.

Villarama said they have to set a fee to raise the level of competition.

"We want this tournament to be serious with top caliber teams seeing action," Villarama said.

The Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) Matina gym is being considered as the venue for the Davao edition of the league. (MLSA)

Full rapid spending to sustain economic resiliency in Davao Region: NEDA 11
BY JUDY QUIROS
Mindanao Daily Mirror
March 13, 2009

The National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) 11 regional office is poised to engage in full rapid spending of the fiscal year 2009 budget as part of its economic resiliency plan in the Davao Region.

In her presentation at the economic briefing Wednesday at the Marco Polo, Davao, NEDA 11 regional director Maria Lourdes Lim said 60 percent of this year’s budget allocation in the areas of infrastructure of the Department of Public Works and Highways, Agriculture, Social Welfare, overseas employment pro-grams, and trade promotion and development will be frontloaded for spending to sustain a workable economy in the region in the wake of the global financial crisis.

Lim said NEDA 11 will also expand social protec-tion programs particularly in the following: Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino, Katas ng VAT: Tulong Para kay Lolo at Lola, self-em-ployment assistance, education voucher system, and education service contracting.

Maximizing the utili-zation of the Maintenance and Other Operating Expenses (MOOE) budget, payback package for Overseas Filipino Workers, maximizing utilization of personal services budget, and expansion of trade and investments are among the budget interventions NEDA 11 will take as its resiliency component for Davao Region.

Lim said Davao Region’s economy remains workable having posted a Gross Regional Domestic Product of 5.7 percent in 2008. GDP target for 2009 is slightly raised to 5.9 percent.

The sources of resi-lience are strong services sector specifically in the areas of ICT and sustained trade services; more funding for infrastructure development, resilient agriculture and export sectors, lower fertilizer and oil prices to boost agriculture sector, private construction to continue and steady demand for OFWs in the Middle East.

Smart to focus plans in Mindanao this year
Mindanao Daily Mirror
March 13, 2009

Smart Communications Inc. chief wireless advisor Orlando Vea revealed that this year their plans will focus more in Mindanao.

“We feel that there are still markets to be tapped,” Vea said in an interview after their MOA (Memo-randum of Agreement) signing with the Depart-ment of Tourism Region 11 for Smart Infoboard project at the Intercontinental Club of Marco Polo Davao on March 11.

Vea said that they will be bringing the mobile broadband, which accor-ding to him is the fastest growing segment of the business, here in Mindanao.

“Actually, it’s already starting,” Vea said.

In 2008, Smart has acquired a subscribers’ base growth of 35.2 million in which six million are Mindanao.

“This is a very healthy growth. Davao has always been a Smart country. That is why we want to give it back to the subscribers. But there are things we offer here that are not offered in other areas,” said PLDT-Smart Public Affairs Mon Isberto.

The recent MOA signing with the DOT for the Infoboard project builds up Smart’s presence here in the region.

“It can benefit us by establishing our presence. We don’t expect a lot of money from this project,” Isberto said. Maya M. Padillo

Text-based project for tourism industry launched
Written by Rizalene P. Acac
Thursday, 12 March 2009 10:03

TOURISTS will no longer need maps and tourists guides to show them around the city and several places in the Davao Region as the Department of Tourism and Smart Communications launched yesterday a text-based platform for the tourism industry.

Tourism Regional Director Sonia Garcia said the tourism information board would be a tool to find available tourism-accredited facilities such as hotels, restaurants, and spas in Davao City, Island Garden City of Samal, and Tagum City through one’s mobile phone.

She said with the program they would hopefully encourage more facilities to get accredited with the agency which would eventually improve the quality of the services and establishments. “How can anybody pass up free advertising. This is free marketing,” she added.

It will also serve as a feedback mechanism for dissatisfied tourists.

Ramon Isberto, Smart Communications public affairs head, said the platform could be considered an incentive to the establishments. “If you are not registered (with the DoT) you will not appear on the list,” he said.

In the long run, he said it would hopefully build a good tourism database for the region.

Danilo J Mojica, head of the company’s Wireless Consumer Division, said the information the platform would be providing would depend on the data given to them by local tourism authorities.

Mojica said local government units with good websites will have an advantage in utilizing the platform.

“This will further the department’s vision and objective. We make use of the telecommunications to disseminate information to tourists,” he added.

Garcia said the region would have spent P2 to 2.5 million if it has developed the program but with Smart it was developed for free.

She said this poses an opportunity for the region to tell regional tourists of the best spots and places in the region to the 36 million subscribers of the telecommunications company of which six million are in Mindanao.

Mojica said the project is does not guarantee a return of investment and it is mostly part of their effort in nation building. He said since Smart also has strong connections in HongKong, Singapore, Taiwan, Japan it could be used to entice foreign tourists.

He said in HongKong and Italy for example, about 60 percent of the community are Smart users – a big potential tourist market.

The platform’s official launching will be on Friday during the Tourism Related Industry Congress at the Grand Regal Hotel

Davao Region seen to reach 5.9% growth rate this year
By Mai Gevera

Davao City (13 March) -- The economic team projected 4.9% to 5.9% growth rate for Davao Region this 2009, as bared in Wednesday's Philippine Economic Briefing at Marc Polo Hotel, Davao City. This is the third leg of the seven destinations that the economic advisers are set to visit.

National Economic Development Authority Secretary Ralph Recto said that growth in the BPO-ICT sector, trade, construction, and agribusiness are expected to boost the economy of Davao Region and support it achieve the 5.9% target.

The Philippines as a whole is targeting 3.7 to 4.4 percent GDP growth and such is achievable with the increase in government spending, private sector's cooperation, and strength in domestic consumption, Recto said.

Trade and Investment Undersecretary Merly Cruz suggested that a stronger investment promotion is necessary to make the country more attractive in the eyes of potential investors.

"There is no better way than now to ensure that we capitalize on this to position our country for higher levels of growth when the global economy rebounds," she said.

For the Davao Region, both agribusiness and services sectors are seen to fuel trade and investments.

Each province is given a particular industry to champion on. Davao del Norte and Compostela Valley are poised to develop banana and palm oil, Davao del Sur on coconut manufacturing, Island Garden City of Samal on tourism facilities an real property, Davao City on BPO, and Davao Oriental on agro-forestry.

Data showed that the region experienced record growth levels in both exports and investments in the past five years. It posted the highest export receipts in 2008 at US$800 million. (PIA XI) [top]

If I were Sandie, I would come on same week and share accoms with you. Singapore is known to be so expensive especially with first class hotels such as Holiday Inn. Well, that's if he's on the budget-conscious side. The only down side is he can do no hunky-punky with a roomie.
