naa'y ongoing exhibit sa Museo Dabawenyo, there are interesting trivia that one can learn from the exhibit. During the American period, with them impressed by the rich fertile soil, the Americans once planned to transform Davao into a "white man's country" by encouraging caucasians like italians to populate Davao for colonization, which did not materialize. The fertile Davao soil was also part of the reason why the Japanese planned to transform Davao into 'Little Tokyo" most likely in connection with its bid to build a Japanese Empire in Asia prior to the war, but of course these did not push through after the war.

Even foreigners wanted Davao during those times for their advantage. Pero mas preferable kung mga Dabawenyo mismo will be the ones to benefit and be good stewards of fertile Davao.

^^ malamang daghan na ta tisoy :D

Pero kung limited foreign investors sa Davao kung icompare sa uban regions, then on a positive note that can be an advantage, mas preferable pud mga local Davao investors mag benefit. Basin naa dinha Mindanaoan like naka-capital ug daku-dako sa gold mines sa comval invest na lang sila diri and compete with foreign based multinationals.

Maybe the "negative" image that they tend to lambast against Davao would be turned an advantage to Dabawenyos instead, kay local investors maka-benefit sa rich resources waiting to be tapped, provided they be good stewards also.

New tourism bill to boost industry
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

SENATOR Richard Gordon said Thursday that the consolidated report of the Congress on tourism measure that will grant incentives to players in the tourism sector has already been approved.

Gordon, principal author of the Tourism Bill, said the approval by Congress of the measure will boost the country's tourism industry, adding that such measure is expected to generate more jobs.

The senator, who chairs the Senate committee on tourism, was among the guests in Thursday's Tourism Related Industry Congress (Tricon) held at Grand Regal Hotel in Davao City.

The measure, Gordon said, is a consolidation of Senate Bill 2213 and House Bill 5229, an act declaring a national policy for tourism as an engine for investment, employment, growth and national development and strengthening of the Department of Tourism (DOT) and its attached agencies.

"This measure will definitely boost domestic tourism as it will provide the needed infrastructures to reinvigorate local productivity," Gordon said. He added "an increased productivity means more jobs for the people and more revenues for the government."

The measure, Gordon said, also seeks the establishment of tourism enterprise zones in Cebu, Davao, Bohol, Laguna, Cavite, Boracay, Palawan and Iloilo.

The establishment of tourism enterprise zones, Gordon said, will lure more foreign investors and tourists to visit these places that are rich in history and culture.

"With the implementation of this measure, the nation can have a better institution to regulate and promote tourism and install the necessary infrastructures to make our country truly world-class," he said.

He said through the new tourism law, the country "can have more jobs for the people, who will no longer have to find for their future in foreign shores, but right here in our native Philippines."

the ongoing exhibit also mentioned that the Japanese intermarried with the lumads, preferably with the daughters of datus that enabled them to acquire vast tracts of lands for plantation prior to the war.

Perhaps dabawenyos could be the most multi-racial among the already multi-racial filipinos.

PGMA to bring investment mission to Davao

http://www.ppasomin.com.ph/PDOSoMin/Documents/press_releases/2008/images/08_B.jpg

Davao City (13 February) -- On her next visit to Davao City, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will be bringing an investment mission of overseas Chinese entrepreneurs interested in agri-business in an effort to promote Mindanao as an agri-business area.

he President will be joining the investors in a lunch at Pearl Farm at the Island Garden City of Samal and "I will bring them to various areas chosen by the Department of Agriculture to be a good place for investing livestock and aquaculture."

However, she wanted to make sure that agri-support infrastructure developments in the Davao Region will not be in conflict with the tourism plans for the Island Garden City of Samal.

The President will be bringing in the Chinese investors now that the Davao International Port development has been put in place and that the Davao roll-on, roll-off system has been set up.

President was in Davao City yesterday (Friday) to inaugurate the newly completed P400 million worth Davao Port expansion project and for the groundbreaking of the proposed P870 million Passenger Terminal Building project.

The P400 million port expansion project includes the construction of 3,179 square meter reinforced concrete wharf; 13,180 square meter back-up area, mooring and fendering area, drainage system, port lighting and rock works.

The Passenger Terminal Building project will include development of parking areas and a Ro-Ro ramp; a greeter building and a gate complex.

In a brief interaction with media practitioners, the President told them of the initial plans of the national government to establish a RoRo system from Davao to Samal to Lupon in Davao Oriental.

However, she said that "the best way to bring the traffic from the Southwestern Mindanao to the Davao International Port and the best route would be from Pantukan" (in Compostela Valley.)

Information sheets of the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) Southern Mindanao Port District said that PPA has already completed the Davao Ro-Ro system related projects for possible lateral links which include the Babak port in Samal; Banay-Banay and San Isidro ports in Davao Oriental. (PIA) [top]

One advantage for foreigners is that under Philippine law, even though you cannot legally own property, you can own a condo! Condominium developers can sell up to 40% of the units to foreigners and the unit can be held in the name of the foreigner. For unmarried foreigners, this is a real advantage, and one reason why I am happy to see condos come into the Davao market![/B]

Mangutana lang ko. Why would Davao, with so much land, need condos? Is it because of this? Just an observation though. I'd rather buy acquired assets than condominium units.

72nd Araw Ng Davao Celebration

The Araw ng Dabaw (Davao Day) has evolved into a celebration of the oneness of our multi-cultural city…It is a vibrant feast held every 16th of March and together with the Kadayawan Festival, ranks as Davao City’s biggest annual event!!!

This year’s theme is “Pagtupad sa Dakilang Pangako”.

Highlights of the festival includes the “Parada Dabawenyo” (socio-civic parade), “Bandahan sa Kadalanan” (band parade),”Pasidungog” (fellowship luncheon), “Piging sa Dan” (food street party!),”Sayawan sa Da’n”,”Kalasikas” (park extravaganzas), along with other spectacles within the major city streets, and the much-anticipated search for the “Mutya ng Dabaw”, the city’s Ambassador of Goodwill. Other events, such as “Huni” (pop music song writing competition), concerts, arts and culture presentations, various sports competitions are also held during the festival.

PIA Press Release
2009/02/13

PGMA to bring investment mission to Davao

http://www.ppasomin.com.ph/PDOSoMin/Documents/press_releases/2008/images/08_A.jpg

http://www.ppasomin.com.ph/PDOSoMin/Documents/press_releases/2008/images/08_B.jpg

(PIA) [top]

LGUs benefit from new tourism law

By Mai Gevera

Davao City (14 March) -- Local tourism players are expected to benefit much from the tourism bill if President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will sign it into law.

Senator Richard Gordon told the tourism stakeholders in yesterday's Tourism Industry-Related Congress held at the Grand Regal Hotel, Davao City. It is a forum that gathered the various players in the tourism sector to organize better tourism packages.

The bill, according to him, features the establishment of tourism enterprise zones across the country. This alone is already expected to boost domestic tourism.

"With this law, local governments will now be pushed to develop their own tourism sites, come up with a package that would be attractive to potential tourists," he said.

Gordon stressed that it is now the role of the LGUs to be more creative in having better tourism investments such that everything from hotel accommodation to products are all offered in a tourism site.

It is also the role of LGUs to develop their tourism enterprise zone as they would be competing with other local cities and municipalities offering distinct sites and products.

Targets for the tourism enterprise zones include Cebu, Davao, Bohol, Laguna, Cavite, Boracay, Palawan, and Iloilo.

DOT Undersecretary Oscar Palabyab said that local tourist destinations must take advantage of cheaper air and sea transport fares being offered by various airlines and shipping companies.

"We observe that most domestic travelers have confined their travel within the region. Airlines have also opened flights in new areas like Laoag, Bosoanga, Zamboanga. This shows that there is a growing new market in local areas." Palabyab said. (PIA XI)

Apan ang Condom, as a whole, could easily depreciate in value for maybe 30 years because we count the whole building as a whole that depreciates. Kung balay, mutaas man ang value kay yuta may gituntungan.

Nonetheless, I would live in a condo kung ultra-tight na ang space esp. Makati or Metro Manila.

Forging partnership to boost Davao tourism
Monday, March 16, 2009
By Nelson C. Bagaforo

WHILE other areas in the country started to feel the adverse effects of the global economic downturn triggered by the financial crisis plaguing big economies like the USA, Japan and the United Kingdom, Davao Region has remained steadfast in its economic performance.

For instance, while other regions suffered a slump in tourist arrivals, Davao Region's tourism industry registered a remarkable growth.

The regional office of the Department of Tourism (DOT) reported an increase of 10.9 percent in tourist arrivals for the first nine months of 2008, as compared to the same period in the previous year.

"Davao Region will continue to be an attractive tourist destination. It will continue to be a driver of the region's economy," said DOT-Southern Mindanao Regional Director Sonia Garcia.

DOT's regional office, in a bid to sustain tourism's growth, has intensified efforts to further strengthen the industry through flagship projects on promotions and marketing.

Some of these projects include participation in major national exhibits, such as WOW Philippines, tri-media exposures and tourism site development.

Last week, DOT embarked on another project that will support its thrust for a long-term tourism campaign as it partnered with Smart Communications Inc. (Smart) in launching the Smart-Davao DOT Community Solution, during the 5th Tourism Related Industry Congress (Tricon) at Grand Regal Hotel in Davao City.

The project is making use of Smart's Infoboard, a web-based messaging service and a Customized Community SIM.

The launch resulted from a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) forged by DOT-Southern Mindanao, led by Garcia, and Smart, represented by chief wireless adviser Orlando B. Vea and Smart head of wireless consumer solutions Danilo J. Mojica. Also at the signing of the MOA were Davao del Norte Governor Rodolfo P. Del Rosario and Davao Region Tourism Council (DRTC) chair Alma L. Uy.

The agreement covers the promotions of tourism in the region.

Garcia said the project could have cost the department some P2 million to P2.5 million, but "we're getting it for free."

"This is a great opportunity for Smart's 36 million subscribers [nationwide] to know that Davao Region has a lot of tourist destinations," she said, adding that the infoboard is not only limited to information about Davao City, but also Tagum City, the Island Garden City of Samal, Mati City and other areas in the region.

With the new partnership, she said more business and tourism establishments in the region such as hotels, inns, restaurants, spas, resorts, and others will request for DOT accreditation since only accredited firms will be included in the infoboard list.

With the introduction of the Smart-DOT Community Solution, Davao will not only be known for the beauty of its waling-waling, the distinct taste of the durian, the splendor of Mt. Apo and the majesty of the Philippine Eagle.

Powered by Smart Buddy, Davao DOT's Customized SIMs will enable tourists in the region to pull information and send comments and suggestions anytime, anywhere.

This Community Solution has also been recognized as one of the best in the use of mobile for social and economic development at the recently concluded 2009 GSMA Global Mobile Awards held in Barcelona, Spain.

Del Rosario said "The Smart-Davao DOT Community Solution will definitely facilitate in achieving DOT's tourism marketing plan, tourism policy implementation and monitoring to attract tourists and to provide greater satisfaction for tourists while in the province."

"After all, tourists want value for their money," he said.

Uy, for her part, said with the continuous growth of the region's tourism industry, "more businesses will be developed and as a result, more jobs can be generated."

"We hope to develop appropriate tourism products and have a careful assessment of tourism sites for the province that offers new experiences to our tourists. The Smart-Davao DOT Community Solution is a creative way of coping with the crisis and is an excellent way of packaging and promoting local destinations here in Davao," Uy said.

With the pervasiveness of mobile phones, the Davao tourism industry can now maximize its potential with 700-Davao or 700-32826.

The project can address queries and tourist concerns; provide general information, advisories and announcements; provide user-specific data such as places to dine, festivals, events, tourist attractions, medical services, flight schedules, etc. and conduct polls and surveys and provide real time results, among others.

"In line with Smart's 'Internet for All' advocacy, the Infoboard illustrates the limitless possibilities and applications presented by wireless broadband combined with Smart's leadership in wireless telecommunications, Vea said.

"We are looking forward to a long-term and synergistic partnership with Davao," he added.

Louie de Guzman, Smart wireless community solution manager, also said the project will benefit not only the region, but also the whole country.

"Davao Region has a high potential for tourism. The infoboard has the advantage of quick and easy activation. If I am a tourist and I am looking what restaurant to go to, I will just type DVOCITY, space, INFO, space, RESTO and I can already have the list of the accredited restaurants of the DOT-11. This could also be done for the list of hotels and spas," de Guzman said.

He said availing of the infoboard service is also like spending for a regular text message. He said Smart is not doing this project with the DOT for revenue. Instead, it is initiated as part of the company's effort for nation-building.

Mon Isberto, head of the PLDT-Smart public affairs, added that the activation of the Tourism Infoboard will display the strong commitment and partnership of both the Smart company and the tourism department in the region.

"This project is really a partnership. We can always provide the technical platform, while the quality of information is being ensured by the local government units and the local tourism authorities. Whatever information available in the DOT 11 website will also be available in this infoboard. We are piloting this project here because people in Davao are very enthusiastic of this approach," Isberto said.

Agritourism at its best
By Henrylito D. Tacio

ECOTOURISM, which involves traveling to relatively undisturbed natural areas to specifically study, admire and enjoy the scenery and its wildlife, was a highly acceptable environmental protection concept of the 1990s.

In time, the term "agritourism" came into existence. Coined from the two words -- agriculture and tourism -- it is a kind of a study tour among areas, which have been found to adopt organic farming and sustainable agricultural production.

Perhaps one of the top agritourism destinations in the country is the farm of the Mindanao Baptist Rural Life Center (MBRLC), a non-government organization based in Kinuskusan, Bansalan, Davao del Sur. Nestled at the rolling foothills of Mount Apo, the country's highest peak, it is "one of its kind," to quote the words of former agriculture secretary Sonny Dominguez.

People from all over the world -- from Australia to Zimbabwe -- have come to see the area. Most of its visitors, however, are from Asia: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, China, East Timor,
India, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Every year, MBRLC is host to almost 10,000 visitors. Almost daily, groups arrive in batches just to see its "Disneyworld of sustainable farming systems," which the center has developed through the years of experimentation and consultations.

"The MBRLC has been at the forefront of improving the lives of the Filipino people, both physically and spiritually," said President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo during the center's 30th anniversary. "They have provided our people with the necessary guidance in order to become productive members of society."

The first destination of those who come to center is its training hall, where they are oriented about what they will see and what they can do.

"Jesus Christ came into this world not only to save us but also to give us an abundant life," explained Roy C. Alimoane, the center’s current director. "What we are doing here are proofs that we can have an abundant life."

After the orientation, the group walks for about five minutes for their first stopover: Sloping Agricultural Land Technology (Salt 1). Basically, Salt is a method of growing crops between contoured rows of nitrogen fixing trees and shrubs. The hedgerows serve as a way to control soil erosion. They are also cut every month and the cuttings are placed in the alleys to serve as fertilizer for the crops.

The next place to visit: Simple Agro-Livestock Technology (Salt 2), where animals are introduced into the Salt system. "Our model farm is only one half hectare," said livestock supervisor Rowe Celeste. Instead of raising cattle, which requires a land area of one hectare per animal, MBRLC recommends goats. "Although a goat is small, she can produce as much as four liters of milk every day if she is purebred and is given a ration to meet all of her nutritional requirements," he said.

The dairy goat they recommend is Anglo-Nubian. However, they are also raising Boer goats, as a source of meat. This breed originated from South Africa where the word "boer" means "farm."

After 20 minutes, the group moves to the next project: Sustainable Agroforest Land Technology (Salt 3). “Where in the world can you find a system where trees and crops are planted together?” asks Aniano Ramos, who usually tours visitors at the farm. Actually, one hectare is devoted to forestry and another hectare to agricultural crops.

Finally, the group ends their first segment of the tour at the Small Agrofruit Livelihood Technology (Salt 4).ÿ See how fruit trees like rambutan, durian, lanzones, mangosteen, marang, and guava are planted together in rows.

"Mindanao is touted to be the fruit basket of the country," Alimoane said.

All of the Salt systems are located in upper portion of the center.

Zacarias B. Sarian, a recipient of the Ramon Magsaysay Award who visited the training center in 1998, commented: "It is not surprising therefore that MBRLC is a favorite destination of people from here and abroad looking for a model of upland farming."

In the lower part of the center, one of its noted systems is the Food Always In The Home (Faith). Called as "refrigerator in the farm," this 100-square-meter vegetable garden provides sufficient vegetables for a family with six members throughout the year.

The central feature of the garden is the basket composts. Their main purpose is "to directly use plant nutrients that can be derived from the rotting materials for home food production," Alimoane said.

As a practitioner of organic farming, the center advocates vermicomposting, the process of converting biodegradable wastes from households and farms into compost (organic soil) through the action of earthworms.

The center is also raising swine, whose manure is utilized in producing biogas. Later on, the sludge is used as organic fertilizer for the fruit trees. The biogas is used in pasteurizing the milk they processed.

There are seven fish ponds found in the lowest portion of the farm. In these ponds, tilapia is raised, which is fertilizer with goat manure. In addition to commercial feeds, tilapia is also given azolla.

The center provides training to those who are interested to immerse further. "Our aim is to promote projects and systems that would enable rural people to improve their standard of living," said Elsa N. Ablayon, head of the training department.

The MBRLC is located 10 kilometers away from the town of Bansalan. To get there, you have to take a bus going to Cotabato City. The travel time is about two hours from the Ecoland Terminal. Outside of the center is a signage so visitors won't miss it.

There are places to stay at the farm. There is a two-door duplex with two rooms each and a bathroom. There are also bunkhouses and dormitory type rooms at reasonable prices.

Be sure to contact the MBRLC first before coming to the center. You can e mail them at mbrlc@mozcom.com. You can also call their office at 064-533-2378.

and that's only a fraction of the total hours of 3 days midnight sale in Gaisano plus midnight sales in other malls... definitely its appropriate for Ayala, SM Lanang and NCCC Lanang to put up their respective malls particularly in the northern part , there will be never be lack of shoppers in Davao!

Mangutana lang ko. Why would Davao, with so much land, need condos? Is it because of this? Just an observation though. I'd rather buy acquired assets than condominium units.

to save land for forests to grow...that way, eco-friendly rin tayo ;)

Yre

Apan ang Condom, as a whole, could easily depreciate in value for maybe 30 years because we count the whole building as a whole that depreciates. Kung balay, mutaas man ang value kay yuta may gituntungan.

Nonetheless, I would live in a condo kung ultra-tight na ang space esp. Makati or Metro Manila.

Mahilig gyud ka ug condom bai

Pero I think condos also appreciates in value because a relative of mine has condo units in Metro Manila and when he sold one of his units after 2 years, it was double the original price.

But I wonder also what happens ba if a condominium building reaches its lifespan and has to be demolished, will the unit owners still owns the lot it was built on?

Paging TJ_brewed, i think you are conversant with this query of mine since you're a broker.:)

A condominium (which they mean is Camella Northpoint) is going to be constructed to look for a treasure that is always said to be in our area. Because, our place is like a japanese hideout in WW2, and the villagers here before witnessed a tragic accident of a two treasure hunters who found a vintage bomb.

So people here is trying to say that palabas lang yang matayog na condo to excavate a deeper hole, pero I don't know.

So for them and I kind'a agree, they also want to find some Yamashita Treasure. If they're really up to the project or the treasure, eitherways, it's good LOL.

Davao City digs in with P3-B loan facility

DAVAO CITY — The city government has inked an agreement with the Land Bank of the Philippines for a P3-billion credit facility that will fund environmental and infrastructure projects as part of its stimulus for the local economy amid the global financial slump.

While an earlier loan package covered infrastructure designed to help farmers get their produce to the market and cut traffic to enhance mobility in the city, it was not immediately clear if this latest loan would provide "stimulus" that is immediately needed, namely: generation of jobs.

The agreement was signed on Friday last week by Landbank President Gilda E. Pico and Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte.

The mayor said funds from the loan will be released on a per-project basis.

"There are no commitment fees and the city will only pay for the projects that are implemented and completed," Mr. Duterte said.

The city government has a standing loan of P990 million from Landbank approved in 2005 for its Davao Development Plan, which includes:

P160 million worth of farm-to-market roads and alternate routes;
P250 million for urban drainage and flood control;
P100 million for the shelter and urban land reform program; and
P300 million for the city’s traffic signalization program.

City Administrator Wendel Avisado earlier said the city had obligation amounting to about P1.6 billion, but consistently updated payments have pared this down to a current balance of P1.1 billion.

Hence, the local government can well afford another loan.

Ang yaman talaga!

GPS-based navigation system now in the country

Anjo Perez
March 6, 2009, 9:01am

Getting lost in the metropolis is now a thing of the past, thanks to the intelligent navigation system from AVT, one of the country’s leading providers of high-quality mobile audio and video systems. Last week, the company unveiled the Philippines’ first locally-supported portable Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation system.

The AVT Navigator A800 is the country’s first locally available navigation system that is packed with up-to-date road maps of Metro Manila that provides motorists with fast and accurate directions in going from one place to another.

The navigation system features a 4.3-inch TFT touch-screen high resolution LCD display that shows detailed map of the metropolis including points of interest such as buildings, shops, restaurants and gasoline stations. The data is provided by Accu-map, which uses accurate GPS referenced digital cartography in their maps. Regular updates can be downloaded from the AVT Navigator website and can be uploaded onto the unit through an SD/MMC card slot.

Users can plot their destinations using the AVT A800’s touch-screen panel that displays intuitive and easy-to-read menus. The system also has a voice prompt to instruct drivers the best route to take. Turn by turn voice and multi-destination search makes going out of town fun, fast and safe.
.
.
.
The A800 is also a great tool for doing cross-country drives as it is packed with almost all the major roads of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao archipelagos, with more on the way. Detailed city maps of Cebu and Davao are being finalized and will be released within the year.

What do you think goys?

tsk tsk tsk at naniwala ka rin nito Lemuel ? my gas ! hahaha..

P160 million worth of farm-to-market roads and alternate routes;
P250 million for urban drainage and flood control;

Ang yaman talaga!

couldn't agree more..RICHEST CITY IN MINDANAO !

FOR three days, Dabawenyos were treated to fun, entertainment, and lots of prizes as GMA Network joined them in celebrating the 72nd Araw ng Dabaw.

The biggest Kapuso stars, including action superstar Robin Padilla and King of Primetime television Richard Gutierrez, entertained shoppers at Parking C of SM City Davao on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, in what was touted as the biggest showbiz event during the weeklong Araw festivities.

Dubbed as "Hataw Dabaw: The Kapuso Araw ng Dabaw Celebration 2009," the three-day event also featured Kapuso stars Ehra Madrigal and Ian Veneracion, who joined Robin to promote their latest series on GMA Telebabad -- the action-packed Totoy Bato.

Both Ehra and Ian assured a jam-packed crowd who turned out at Saturday's afternoon show that Totoy Bato is one-of-its-kind -- full of action and drama rolled into one. Totoy Bato also stars boxing icon Manny Pacquiao.

Before the show, Robin, Ehra, and Ian graced a photo exhibit, showcasing Robin's preparations for Totoy Bato at the Event Center of SM City Davao.

In an interview before the show, Robin said Totoy Bato is a dream role for him and it is big-budgeted program.

"Nung nag-usap kami ni Direk Carlo (Caparas), sinabi ko sa kanya na bubuhayin natin si Totoy Bato sa telebisyon," he said. Totoy Bato is a novel by Caparas serialized in comics in the 70s.

"Pinaganda ang Totoy Bato sa telebisyon. Umabot na sa P200 milyon ang budget nito," he said.

On Sunday, it was Richard's turn to woo Dabawenyos. He was with pretty Rhian Ramos, one of his leading ladies in the upcoming primetime series Zorro.

The huge crowd, composed mostly of "bagets" had the opportunity to see in person their idol, who had done a series of primetime shows, all of which topped in the ratings games, such as Mulawin, Captain Barbell, Lupin and Asero.

The crowd screamed as Richard and Rhian performed a song number on stage.

It was indeed a night of bonding for Richard and Rhian and their fans in this part of the country.

Kapuso stargazing and bonding stretched until Monday, with Mark Herras and Katrina Halili top billing the Kapuso Mall Show at The Atrium of Gaisano Mall.

It was "the show must go on" for Mark who figured in an accident in Manila while on his way to the airport. Because of that incident, he failed to catch his flight to Davao City, but was able to board the next flight. He arrived at Gaisano Mall just in time for the show.

Mark is one of the lead stars in the afternoon sinenovela "Paano Ba Ang Mangarap" while Katrina has an upcoming movie with Robin Padilla -- GMA Films' latest horror offering Sundo.

The series of Kapuso events in Davao City were hosted by Starstruck alumnus and Istayl Naton! host Chuck Allie. He was joined by Istay Naton! co-host Carine Cabebe and Istayl regulars Steph Dacalus and Jason Joyce.

They were joined by Davao's famous twins Krystal and Kristine Gonzales, together with homegrown talents Bea dela Fuente and Niko Ferrer.

Leticia by the Sea

Text and photos by Jojie Alcantara (for SunStar Davao, Witerary)

Talicud Island, a separate islet that belongs to Island Garden City of Samal, has long been a hidden paradise for those who crave for a remote getaway while still being able to go back to the city within two hours of boat travel.

Here, portions of land are bought by families who build their own private retreats or public resorts. One of these is the yet unknown Leticia by the Sea, which was easily coined by the owners who also own Casa Leticia (and the famous Tsuru and Hanoi Restaurants). I will predict, however, that it won’t be long before tourists will come visit this place, by its sheer beauty alone, thanks to the Dela Paz family who took pains in creating a dream haven.

Two years ago, Rey dela Paz bought a potential piece of land raw with lush vegetation, jutting coconut trees and a strip of white beach. Inspired by a vision in mind, he slowly built a hidden paradise by carefully following the land’s terrain and rocky cliffs so as not to drastically alter the environment. Cottages were built overlooking a spectacular view of the turquoise sea.

Although these houses, scattered in a rolling landscape of colourful gardens and trees, were more of Balinese influence, everything else was of Filipino touch. Open cabanas protect your sleeping quarters with a white flowing curtain while affording you a view of the open sea and the cool breeze. The cottages, pavilion with a view deck and dorm were constructed with coco lumber, amakan, hard wood bamboo and nipa, complemented with interesting artifacts and antiques he bought from his province in Negros. Antique day beds, old lamps, tarnished bancas, ship rudders, an old river boat for hauling sugar cane, cabinets and an ethnic head statue are strategically placed all over the place to give you a rustic but cozy atmosphere.

Many activities can be done in this dreamy sanctuary…hiking, snorkelling, diving, kayaking, just cozing up with a book in a hammock by the beach…or if you are like me, engaged in photography.

The family welcomes visitors on tour or exclusive rental of the place. For an overnight package of P10,000, inclusions are accommodation good for 15 people (charge of P500/head in excess), to a maximum of 20, an exclusive use of the resort and its sports facilities (kiddie pool and kayaks), kitchen and cooking amenities, boat transfers, plus a resident cook and a helper to assist you.

Five public boats from Davao leave for Talicud Island in Sta. Ana Pier from 10am to 3pm. Another route is by barge from Sasa in Davao to Samal, followed by a 30-minute ride from Babak to Kaputian, and lastly, a 10-minute banca ride just across Talicud. Boat reservations and charters can be arranged upon request at Casa Leticia office at (092) 2240501, mobile nos. 09177025427, or email stay@casaleticia.com for inquiries.

Special thanks to the Dela Paz family for the overnight invitation and wonderful company (overdose on sumptuous crabs and meals!)
