@ kulas

going back to our discussion on indigenous tribes, I discovered some 'clue' with my personal research just recently. This ancient artifact that were discovered in Southern Mindanao area (particularly in Sarangani) may hold clue that Southern Mindanao may as well be among the earliest (if not the earliest) settlements in the country. This is the pic of the ancient artifact:

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r253/artrocket/anthropomorphic.jpg

The image somehow reminded me of ancient Sumerian artifacts and found on the net this image of an ancient Sumerian figure:

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r253/artrocket/sumerianface.jpg

Ancient Sumeria was supposedly Humanity's oldest civilization after the Flood that flourished in present day Iraq during ancient times. They had highly advanced civilization that time replete with writing, banking systems, etc. but the Sumerians suddenly and 'mysteriously' vanished.

There seems very prominent similarity in comparison with the images. Ancient artworks tend to record the culture of a certain place and usually follow disinct patterns that define their culture, in this case I believe the prominent "eyebrow" pattern of the ancient sumerian artifact seemed related with the artifacts found in Southern Mindanao and may be more than just 'coincidence'. I wonder whether there are other ancient artifacts in Asia that relate with those features, otherwise these figures would be very distinct.

It also provided 'clue' from what I previously read that the creation mythology of the Samal tribe was also strikingly similar with that of ancient Sumerians.

There are also depictions that ancient giant inhabitants in Samal did exist an they were called "Dinagats," who were eventually eliminated by their smaller sized neighboring Davao tribes because of their rude and bullying behaviors. The giants of old were also mentioned in the bible known as the "nephilims" who were borne out from parents of 'gods' and humans. For information, Abraham of the old testament actually originated from ancient Sumeria as his father was a Sumerian priest.

Nabasa pud nako before that the earliest inhabitants in the country may have landed in Southern Mindanao area about 5th century pa, and that the other regions in the country such as visayas and luzon were settled only later. Connecting these clues, it may be possible that Samal and Southern Mindanao may hold very ancient links in history not just in the country but Humanity itself.

akong gi-post personal research sa blog nako:
http://maharlikan.blogspot.com/

Here's a link narrating about the ancient Dinagats from UP-Mindanao (it's good that this university had established itself here, they can make a difference sa pila ka panahon kulang nabuhat ubang educational institutions sa Dabaw mag support sa mga ingon ani):

Camella to build more units here, boosting Davao’s modern lifestyle
Monday, 13 April 2009 11:03

A housing developer here is eyeing the northern part of the city as location for its new high-end projects which will further add to the business, commercial and shopping destinations in the region.
Marlon Escalicas, general manager of Camella Communities Davao, a subsidiary of the country’s biggest homebuilder Vistaland and Lifescapes, said Camella sees opportunities in the growth of the city’s northern economic hub with the ongoing development of modern office facilities catering to the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry and other businesses, as well as high-end commercial and shopping centers.
“We intend to provide Davao the opportunity to be part of this vibrant economic and social environment by giving them a residential location within the city’s emerging urban enclave,” Escalicas said.
He said the development will provide a perfect backdrop for people to have a full and healthy lifestyle while they strike a balance between live, work and play.
“It will be the first of its kind in the northern part of Davao, and will come with many more enhanced features that will give its homeowners the ultimate modern lifestyle,” said Escalicas, adding that their new project will not only be an addition to Davao’s urban development, it will be different in that the natural environs of the location will be preserved and even enhanced in respect to Mother Nature. “We shall preserve the age-old trees and other plant life within the project site, and enhance this with imported Caribbean pine trees worth millions, turning this development into the city’s first pine estate,” he added. Camella Communities is well known for its master-planned residential developments in the city such as the well-admired Caribbean-themed Solarigea in Talomo and the Italian-inspired Toscana in Bago Gallera. The doctor is now a businesswoman
By Gigie A. Agtay

AMID a global economic recession, this 36-year-old Dabawenya braces up and explores the world of business.

Dorothy Lim-Bakino is neither a business management graduate nor has experience in it. All she has are guts, optimism, and a supportive sister to venture in a salon and spa business.

"The Manny Pacquiao Blog". Click here for stories and updates on the Filipino boxing champ.

Dorothy, who is a graduate of the Davao Medical School Foundation and a licensed physician, along with younger sister Mary Jenny Lim-Carpio, are the two pillars of Dojen H20 Salon and Spa, the newest beauty center located at the second floor of the Robinson's Cybergate complex along J.P. Laurel Avenue, Bajada, this city.

After passing the physicians licensure exams, Dorothy decided to work in the US.

"I didn't practice medicine. I wanted to try something new abroad. After several years, I decided to come home for good. Napagod din ako (I got tired)," she narrated.

Inspired by the turnout of Jenny's business partnership on another mall-based salon, Hair Studio, Dorothy was motivated to put up one. She and Jenny agreed to join resources for H20.

The name H20 was derived from a modern hair salon in Malaysia while "Dojen" is a combination of the first syllables of the two sisters' first names. During one of their trips abroad, Dorothy said they saw this H20 Hair Studio in Jusco shopping mall in Malaysia and was inspired to put up one in Davao City.

She initially thought of a "fish spa" service, similar to the one at Ocean Park in Manila and the Sampuotan Spa in Malaysia, which offers a fish therapy designer concept that sets it apart from the rest by having the Garra Rufa fishes from Turkey to rejuvenate and relax the soul while providing great beautification benefits for the whole body.

But the hassles that go with the importation of the highly priced Garra Rufa fishes prompted them to shelve the plan.

For Dorothy, its not just all about earning money in business, it is also giving clients a value for their money through competent hairdressers and staff as well as looking after the latter's economic welfare.

She takes pride in her four hair experts -- Elton John Leonardo, Manolino A. Esmerio, Dennis Asuncion, and Raymond Lozada who, she said, underwent a month-training at the L'Oreal Academy (L Academy) in Manila.

At the L Academy, they were developed into well-rounded hairdressers with a comprehensive understanding of systems, products, and their usage.

Their in-depth training, Dorothy said, allowed them to fully appreciate new, advanced, and complex trends and techniques that will help them handle all situations in a salon with ease.

"Here at H20, clients' hair will undergo hair diagnostics before hairdressers apply anything," she said.

All other 19 staff were also trained in Davao by L'Oreal professionals.

Dorothy believes that in recent years, regular visits to the salon have ceased to be a domain of the rich and famous.

It is now easily available to anyone who wants to feel good about themselves, hence her positive outlook about H20.

"Going to the salon has become a basic need aside from food and shelter," she said. "I noticed na sa mga beauty salons, di nawawalan ng tao."

She, however, said the affordability of salon services shouldn't compromise quality.

"Quality service will satisfy clients. I know because I am a meticulous client myself when I go to a salon," she added.

With her optimism that H20 will churn out a respectable performance, she said there is so much to do to keep salon staff loyal.

"Hindi lang dapat owners ang kikita. Workers should be given a good deal para maging harmonious ang relationship. Aside from other incentives is their continuing education, abroad if necessary," she said. "If they are good, then it follows that they will earn more."

Dorothy, who also took the one-month training at L Academy, said she can also fill in for other hairdressers.

"Though I cannot cut clients' hair, I can say that I am now a hair color expert," she added.

At H20, she said, you can come face-to-face with a new and better look in a luxurious yet comfortable environment. It can service at least 24 clients at the same time.

H20, a place where you can relax and feel rejuvenated as you get personalized attention from its amiable staff, is open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Chinatown night market to
be made regular attraction

The night market in Davao City’s Chinatown area will soon be a regular feature to attract tourists and businesses.

Councilor Peter Laviña, chair of the City Council Committee on Trade, Commerce and Industry, said the City Council will hold one more public hearing and then favorably endorse the institutionalization of the night market.

He said the next hearing is set on Friday, April 24 at 9 a.m. at the City Council.

Laviña said the proposal to regularize the night market was made by Brezton Hao of Chinatown 168 through councilor Paolo Duterte, president of the Liga ng mga Barangay.

He said the proposal calls for the holding of a night market every last weekend of the month.

“If successful as we have experienced during the Davao Chinese New Year Festival last January, then the night market could progress into a weekly and then later nightly activity,” Laviña said.

He said the night market would boost the image of Chinatown as the city’s premier business district with nightly tourist attractions and help create livelihood and employment. Diana Lhyd Suelto

Davao City’s e-tricycles: Toss-up between old and new
Bworldonline (http://www.bworldonline.com/BW042009/content.php?id=075) April 20, 2009

DAVAO CITY — An electric vehicle assembly plant north of this city’s central district looks like a warehouse, but it represents an emerging toss-up between maintaining tradition and adopting technological revolution in the Southern Mindanao city’s transport industry.

http://www.bworldonline.com/BW042009/tricycle.jpg

Laborers in this city’s Sasa district have been working hard to assemble four-wheel electric vehicle prototypes: a two-seater car and a converted jiffy, both with automatic transmission system.

Within the compound of DC Electric Vehicle Corp., six other electric tricycles have been assembled for sale within the next few days.

First-time visitors might notice the limited manpower in the assembly line, but "you do not need an army to build the vehicles the way they are designed," said plant manager Albert N. Ybañez.

"It’s not really complicated. There are only 36 pieces on an electric tricycle and one person can build one [unit] in just eight hours," he said.

Nobody thought that it would be a business Mr. Ybañez would start up, with no background in engineering and engine details, and with adeptness only at cooking oriental dishes having worked as a chef overseas for many years.

In February, DC Electric rolled out 21 electric tricycles for public transport and, as expected, triggered negative reactions from public utility competitors particularly when it started soliciting passengers without permit from the City Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board. The company twice applied for the permit, which are still on hold to this day.

The board had issued a cease and desist order that prohibited electric tricycle drivers from plying secondary routes pending the case’s resolution.

On April 17, the drivers of electric tricycles asked City Administrator Wendel E. Avisado, who temporarily allowed them to ply their routes.

Davao City, a perennial nominee of green contests, has been active in environmental campaigns. The city is in the second pilot area of the Clean Cities Program implemented by the Sustainable Energy Development Program, in partnership with the US Department of Energy and the United States Agency for International Development.

DC Electric’s push for its project is anchored on the central government’s programs to promote an environment-friendly transport industry.

The Biofuels Act has recognized the need to develop alternative mode of transportation, including hybrid cars.

The Alternative Fuel Vehicles Act of 2004 gives incentives to hybrids "to promote the manufacture, importation, sale, distribution, use and development of hybrid or alternative fuel vehicles in furtherance of the objectives of Republic Act 8749 or the Clean Air Act."

Salaam H. Alibbdon, an electric tricycle driver, said the petition of transport groups against their operations might have been spawned by jealousy as passengers preferred the non-pollutant electric tricycles. "It runs very smoothly and there’s no hassle."

He noted he earns more compared to driving a fuel-powered tricycle. "I used to earn about P300 but I now earn from P400 to P500 [on an electric tricycle]."

That extra P100-P200 savings will go a long way for 59-year-old Alibbdon, who has children and three grandchildren depending on him for support.

Benjamin C. Rafols, 37, used to drive a trisikad — a bicycle with a side car — on a less profitable route earning only P80 a day, but he saw his take-home pay doubles in a month of driving the electric tricycle.

Mr. Rafols said he no longer worries about fluctuating gas prices as the five-battery vehicle can run about 70 to 80 kilometers when fully charged.

"Based on the current electric prices, eight hours of charging will only cost P82.75 or about one peso per kilometer," Renato M. Yap, operations manager of DC Electric, said.

In contrast, traditional light road vehicles run at a cost of P3 to P4 per kilometer based on current fuel prices.

A stripped-down basic model — composed of chassis, body, battery, and the dynamo imported from China and Taiwan — has enabled the company to keep retail prices at affordable levels. A three-wheel pickup type ideal for transporting goods costs P98,000.

Mr. Yap expects a return of investments in his venture in three years. As for safety features, the tricycle runs a maximum speed of 40 kilometers per hour and all the passengers are seated at the rear for easy maneuve-rability

The vehicle can also be charged at ordinary household outlets with 30-ampere capability, or lines that could take 6,600 watts.

A drawback, however, is that the power from its 60-volt batteries is inadequate to hurdle a 30-degree incline.

The company’s vehicles are beginning to become a popular mode of transport among resorts, factories and malls. It has so far sold 36 units and among its list of clients are Gaisano Mall of Davao, Pearl Farm Resort, Monde Nissin Corp., Kuya Ed’s and Fishcado restaurants.

Mr. Yap said the company wants Davao City to be the first in the country to use electric vehicles as a public mode of transportation, but while the city government tarries on the company’s application permit, nearby areas are fast catching up to the electric transport’s potential.

Digos City and Malita town have placed orders of about 60 units, while Cotabato City Mayor Muslimin G. Sema wants to get 600 units plying the city before schools open in June.

"Our vision is not really about making money but for us to help lessen global warming. Just imagine five to 10 years from now, if we can run 1,000 units how much pollution we can avoid," Mr. Ybañez said. — Joel B. Escovilla

This is high time, mabantayan na usahay sa highways sa Davao polluted with smog, basin mapareha sa uban major cities. Sa north banda uban mga bata daw nagkasakit especially with weak lungs due to increased pollution. these should be checked while still in early stage. Pero unta those electric vehicles that ply along major highways would be electric cars and not trikes.

Basin magsamok-samok mga vile forces gi-manipulate raba nila bawalan mga technologies pareha ani sa major streets, ang IMF WB gisupress and nasud magcreate ingon ani nga technology, which is a contemptous thing for them to do and people should be aware and vigilant otherwise ignorance to it would enable them to manipulate to one's and the planet's disadvantage.

‘Samal Highlands’ wants to sell to doctors in NY, LA, Las Vegas (http://http://www.bworldonline.com/BW042109/content.php?id=044)

DAVAO CITY — An upscale property complex in the island city of Samal is focusing on medical professionals, both local and foreign, as its primary market.

Jonathan A. Alegre, a member of the board of directors of the RJP Realty which is behind the Samal Highlands Garden Resort, said his team would soon market the project in Las Vegas, New York and Los Angeles in a bid to encourage Filipino medical professionals to buy lots in the 45-hectare project.

The team will also make a sales pitch in European cities where Filipino nurses are employed, he added.

Mr. Alegre, also the president of the Tagum Doctors Hospital and the Davao Medical School Foundation, said several local medical professionals have already bought lots at the Samal Highlands.

"[Medical professionals are] a big market particularly because our nurses and medical doctors have worked abroad and can still afford to buy these properties [despite the global crisis]," he said.

Lemuel R. Podador, president of RJP Realty, said negotiations with banks have started to raise funds for Samal Highlands Garden Resort, as an additional P300-million loan would be needed to augment the P800-million project.

Samal Island will soon be home to a medical tourism complex. — BW FILE PHOTO The project is in a good position to attract foreign buyers because it will have medical tourism facilities, he claimed.

Among the key amenities of the project would be a special clinic and other medical tourism facilities in Samal Highland’s medical tourism complex, Mr. Alegre said.

"That makes our project unique [compared with other projects in the nearby city]," he added.

The first phase of the project is the Emilia Garden Residences, an 18.9-hectare "farm subdivision" with 119 lots.

Mr. Podador was optimistic that even with the economic downturn, the lots would be completely sold within the year. The subdivision is home to 1,500 mango trees, making it "truly a garden," he added.

Under standard agreements between the property developer and lot buyers, only 25% of the lots could be used for the house, which will be limited to two floors. The rest will be for gardens and other developments, said Ramon L. Ortiz, director of the company.

The smallest lot in the subdivision is 750 square meters, while the biggest is 1,000 square meters.

The second phase of the project is the 65-lot Terazzas de San Isidro Ridge Lot and Villas, which will be home to bigger villas, he said. The third phase is the Costa de Azure Beachfront Development, which will cover the medical tourism complex and a hotel.

The fourth phase, meanwhile, is the San Isidro Cove Marina and Yacht Club which will feature tourist amenities like floating restaurants, officials said.

Other key features of the project are a 300-meter zipline and a "black" mangrove plantation to be supervised by the Department of the Environment and Natural Resources.

"We are optimistic that we can complete this project in three years or even less. And we are going to fast-track everything," Mr. Alegre said, pointing out that the company has limited the number of its real estate brokers to just 10 because it expects to run out of lots to sell before the end of the year. — Carmelito Q. going back to our discussion on indigenous tribes, I discovered some 'clue' with my personal research just recently.

Here's a link narrating about the ancient Dinagats from UP-Mindanao (it's good that this university had established itself here, they can make a difference sa pila ka panahon kulang nabuhat ubang educational institutions sa Dabaw mag support sa mga ingon ani):

very possible na ang earliest maharlikans were actually the lumads of mindanao. the coming of spandiards in masau, butuan, nakita nila na may kingdom na dito sa mindanao. gold artifacts with similar features of that in south asia were found. deeply rooted ang lumad culture na kahit ngayon almost intact pa rin mga tradition nila. the lumads are peace-loving people. ayaw nila ng gulo. mga original settlements nila nasa mga coastal areas iniwan para lumipat sa mas tahimik na lugar like mountains or sa mga interior part ng mindanao. same case dito sa davao, originally nasa bucana sila ng davao river, ngayon nasa marilog na in just a span of 150-200 years.

and it's the strategy of passive resistance against threats to their culture that enabled their ancient legacy to survive, and even thrive in Mindanao and in Davao up to the present. I believe that in the future when technology would reach a more sophisticated eco-friendly level than the obsolete pollution emitting ones, their culture would once again be revived for holding on to the principle of Universality and harmony with Mother Nature.

good thing, most technological innovations today were aimed to be eco-friendly like electric cars, green buildings, etc. it took hundreds of years para marealize ng mga mainstream human beings how fragile our nature is.

I once recalled of a theory that even some of King Solomon's gold may have originated from Butuan, as there was a passage in the bible that mentioned about it coming from certain distant lands. Wonder how accurate that theory could be. Naa man gud characteristic ang gold nga bisan unsa pa ka ancient ang origin ma-preserve gihapon due to the high quality of its luster nga bisan unsa kadugay sinaw gihapon.

Wakeboarding facility rising in Davao City, Phlippines

A property developer is investing P30 million (€ 370.000,-) on a wakeboarding facility in Davao City, Phlippines. Located in Deca Homes, a residential subdivision a few kilometers north of the city proper, the facility is touted to be one of the biggest water sports spots in the country, together with the Camarines Sur Watersports Complex in the town of Pili.

Jesus B. Atencio, 8990 Housing Development Corp. president, said the facility initially targets local tourists and homeowners of the subdivision, though the company intends to invest more if there is good reception.

"The P30 million is just the initial investment. We can always expand the business," he said.

The man-made lake will feature a cable ski system and cranes that will pull wake boarders at varying speeds.

"We will make the experience affordable and we are thinking of a P500 (€ 8,-) fee for the whole day," he said.

By the way, a book author commented on my recent blog "ancient Sumerian links?" in maharlikan.blogspot.com and he was talking in his book about gold and some intriguing insights about it with links to Sumeria.

(I have noticed some visitors who suddenly visited my blog came from foreign countries as Australia, UK, Germany, US after my posting the recent blog about Sumeria, and they used the tag "Maharlikan" in the search engines, which is unusual kay diri ra man sa ato ginagamit na nga word. It would not be suprising when Davao and Mindanao may soon be noticed by foreign research such as this. GetFriday Complain About The Competition: CatchFriday
Philippines presents alternative in India in Outsourcing War

by Lawrence Perry

LONDON, ENGLAND — (OfficialWire) — 04/20/09 —
www.CatchFriday.com
Well I didn't write the 4 hour workweek, and my name isn't Timothy Ferris, and I never claimed to be GetFriday either!

It would appear that Sundar who runs GetFriday in India is afraid of the competition?

He claims that his Virtual Assistant firm is the best, and thinks that it is unethical that CatchFriday in the Philippines is competing against him - ever watched real American football?

The Chicago Bulls would be lost without a fight, wouldn't they?

Let's get back to the call for someone to do your job.....

I think it all depends who answers the call don't you? The times I have heard people call GetFriday in India, and get an answering machine; the company that approaches them and does not get a personal voice.....

It certainly is about culture and service isn't it!

Sundar says that his staff do not understand culture and this is probably why GetFriday are loosing to CatchFriday clients daily.

The number of complaints that come with their success are overwhelming, and Amy says, 'Forget Getfriday'

So what is the difference between CatchFriday and GetFriday, Catch Friday are in the Philippines, and Get Friday are in India. A more subtle difference is that GetFriday has a huge 150 seat call centre/supermarket in which shift are 12 to 14 hours on, and CatchFriday have a 50/50 split between a call center in Davao and homeshoring.

The fundamental difference is that CatchFriday are managed by English immigrants, whereas GetFriday are all Indian. CatchFriday is bent on improving the community and reinvesting, whilst GetFriday is being managed under a different philosophy.

CatchFriday's staff are Christian, and GetFriday are Hindu.

Perry, CatchFriday's CEO is amused at Sandar's claim, and says, "we have no problem competing globally, and we of course want to encourage GetFriday to give a quality service."

A MAJOR technological development will unfold in Mindanao with the launching in Davao City next month of an innovation laboratory and telecommunications education center (Innolab) by the country’s largest telecommunications company, the Philippine Long Telephone Distance Co., Inc.

The Innolab will serve as incubation area or breeding ground of software, inventions and all sorts of business solutions and new technological discoveries, according to Ben Melasa, head of the company’s Corporate Business Group in Mindanao.

To be inaugurated inside the sprawling PLDT headquarters on Ponciano Reyes St. in Davao City in May, the center will serve as an area where startup businesses, software developers, inventors and researchers in the academe can pilot their new technological solutions and computer programs before these are used privately by their individual companies or offered to the market for propagation and commercial use.

Melasa told business editors and reporters meeting regularly at the MediSpa Clinic at SM City Davao that the use of the center will be for free and that the company may even buy or help market the solutions that will be developed or validated in the Innolab.

The Innolab, the fourth in the country, will also serve as showcasing center for the PLDT’s new solutions. “We will be able to showcase our new products to these startups,” he said. The other areas where PLDT has opened Innolab are Manila, Cebu and Subic.

As a melting pot of innovative ideas and venue where new products and cost-effective solutions are tested, Melasa said the Innolab is expected to lead to some kind of technological revolution in Mindanao since it is going to service the needs and requirements of startup businesses, researchers, inventors and other stakeholders in the island region.

Aside from benefiting the academe in their research and development activities, the Innolab will also be very helpful in the solutions developed by members of the expanding information communication technology (IT) sector in Davao City.

Melasa first made a presentation about Innolab during a recent general membership assembly of the Davao ICT Inc. presided by Ms Lizabel “Wit” Holganza, head of the Medical Transcription Academy in Davao City.

Earlier, Samuel Abrenilla, chair of the Filipino Inventors Federation Inc., a national organization, said that one of the projects that his organization is implementing is helping new solutions developers be able to market their products.

Abrenilla said that the federation is planning to partner with big companies to help these thriving startup businesses.

Also, he said the organization is partnering with schools in developing the inventions of students, including those that are needed for the information and communications technology industry.

Abrenilla complained that while schools hold fairs for students to showcase their inventions, there is still not much effort provided to develop those inventions that can be mass produced.

“It is sad, but sometimes students are just contended and happy that some foreign companies imitate their inventions, failing to realize that they could have made huge profits out of these inventions,” he lamented.

Davao City-

Banks operating in this city are posting increases in deposits, some as high as 20%, in the first quarter. Earlier, the buzz is that big banks reported by local media as having investments in troubled US financial institutions have suffered mild withdrawals. Depositors have transferred their money to medium-sized conservative banks.

While sources from the affected banks admitted they had such withdrawals early this year, the situation has returned to normal, confidence of depositors has been restored, and lost accounts are returning. The bottom line: deposit levels in the city, which includes resources from neighboring provinces and cities, are rising amid the global crisis’s aftershocks.

Outside of the banks, businesses are doing okay and for as long as the currency exchange rate remains relatively stable and farmers keep producing food for the domestic and export markets, Davao’s economic prospects will be bright in the near term.

Growth in the property sector as well as in commercial-scale fruit plantations would neutralize the impact of low copra price affecting the island’s rural sector and the reported slowdown, or even dormancy, in the mining sector. Still, Diwalwal’s independent gold miners are quietly extracting gold within projections.

The sentiment now is so different compared with the crisis in late 1990s when the peso shed its value by over 50% forcing firms with dollar loans either to seek restructuring or to close shop. The Asian financial flu that forced Malaysian investors to leave the region in late 1990s was compounded by the Estrada administration’s all-out war in Central Mindanao that resulted in stalled expansion or suspension of business start-ups in the island.

Inaccurate yata yung figure. As of October 2008, ang land value sa Bajada-Lanang area, particularly those along JP Laurel Ave, is P4,500.00 per square meter (zonal value of BIR). That amount could have gone up this year. I should know. ;)

zonal valuations of the BIR are not accurate. the value of that land could be at least twice the amount of the bir zonal valuation.

example...zonal valuation ng lupa namin sa cm recto ay only 20,000 p/sqm, but the market price is around 50,000 to 60,000 p/sqm.:)

I have no idea how much ang value sa old downtown. But land value in Bajada and Lanang has skyrocketed in the past year. Yung value na P4,500.00 per square meter is just the zonal value of BIR. But the actual selling price in most transactions is significantly higher than the zonal value.

PBB eyes expansion of branch network
Banking & Finance
Written by Erik de la Cruz / Reporter
Monday, 20 April 2009 20:08

PHILIPPINE Business Bank (PBB), a medium-sized thrift bank which is part of the conglomerate AMY Group of Ambassador Alfredo Yao, plans to expand its branch network to 60 by the end of this year from 35 at present, according to a senior bank official.

“We are looking to expand our network to 50 or even up to 60 branches this year, and our initial plan is to establish our presence in Cebu and Davao,” Constantino Bombais, PBB first vice president and treasurer, said.

PBB, which started operations in 1997 as Total Savings Bank, also plans to put up branches in Iloilo, Bacolod and Cagayan de Oro.

Bombais said PBB was planning to initially open three branches in Davao and another three in Cebu before the second half of this year.

Yao also owns the Zest-O line of fruit juices and the majority of Zest Air (formerly Asian Spirit airline).

Bombais said the goal is to establish PBB’s presence in areas where other AYM companies also operate to serve the banking needs of the conglomerate and its employees.

Zest-O Corp. operates five manufacturing plants in Novaliches in Quezon City, Marilao in Bulacan, Canlubang in Laguna, Mandaue City in Cebu and Cagayan de Oro in Misamis Oriental.

Zest Air flies from Manila to Virac, Busuanga, San Jose in Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Cebu City, Catarman, Caticlan, Puerto Princesa, Naga, Legaspi, Iloilo, Kalibo, Tacloban, Bacolod and Tagbilaran.

Most of PBB’s branches are in Metro Manila. It also has branches in Pangasinan, Laguna, Bulacan, Rizal, Pampanga and Cavite.

PBB’s main clientele are small and medium business enterprises.
-----------------------------------------------------

PBB...Pinoy Big Brother...hehe...this just one of the proofs that davao is indeed the financial and commercial center of mindanao.

OT: so nakita na nako ang connection sa names nga Zest-O ug Zest Air..

The analyses of gold metal concentrations in Compostela Valley even outranks the witwatersrand basin of South Africa.

Pero dapat mga Dabawenyo and Mindanaoan discerning ug vigilant especially sa atong interest bahin sa atong kasaysayan. relying on foreign historians obviously palabihon nila ilang interest, so dapat mga Dabawenyo ug Mindanawan magsugod na ug baton kahibalo bahin ani para maampingan atong interes ug kasaysayan.)

parang nabigyang linaw yong claims mo regarding our roots.

i asked someone ganiha bale escort guard namo. he told me na basi masurprise daw ko nga sa ilang tribo, dili daw kasagaran mga itum og lapad ang ilong og nawong nila. some of them mga mukhang tisay/tisoy daw. siya mismo both his parents are matigsalog na puro. pero sa profile sa iyang nawong taas siyag ilong. daghan daw sa ila mga itsuraan. mga oldies daw nila nagabuhat daw og mga brass, gold, bronze na mga borloloys. once nianhi siya sa balay, magkasinabot sila sa among assistant na bagobo. related lang ilang inistoryahan. some bagobo words are related pud sa bisaya. pero mas preserved sa ilaha kay walay halong spanish words.

I met my highschool classmate just recently after many years. Gipangutana nako unsa iyang lineage kay tisoy. I was surprised kay recently lang nako nahibaw-an Dabawenyo ilang tribe. Once, naa ko nakaistorya, he belonged to an indigenous tribe and I believe was studying law. Nag-istoryahanay mi bahin physics kuha kaayo niya. It's not surprising kay universal kaayo ang language sa physics from molecule to galaxy and it's inherent in their culture nga Universal. Bahin man gud to sa geometric patterns sa ilang weaving gi-istoryahan namo. Our helper before who belonged with the bagobo tribe. ako siyang giistoryahan bahin sa spacedrive vehicle na hi-tech na kay mag-levitate. she didn't look surprised at all (as I expected) and she said: "kana man ang ginasakyan sa among mga katigulangan tung unang panahon," (which provided clue to my personal research); later she remembered I wasn't from her tribe kay taga mainstream ko and it's knowledge from their people, nag-deny na siya and moingon na lang ambot when I prodded to discuss further. I understand, they value their precious knowledge but sometimes naive mainstream people used to downgrade and disregard their beliefs kay mas "modern" lagi kuno.

by the way, I believe the sudden surge of blog view on my maharlikan.blogspot.com site via search engines was due to an article about Manny Pacquiao and his being Maharlikan:

Davao tankers salvage bronzes
in Nat’l PRISAA championships
Mindanao Daily Mirror
April 23, 2009

NAGA CITY––Davao Region’s tankers could salvage only four bronzes at the start of the National PRISAA Championships last Tuesday at the Metro Naga Sports Complex in Brgy. Pacol.

Haroon Cali of the University of Mindanao won a bronze medal in the 200-meter butterfly event while Isidro Penales, Junie Barani, Rey Coberos and Cali teamed up for another bronze in the men’s 4x50-meter relay.

Shahani Navarro, Angelie Zuniga, Analie Rodriguez and Rodora Atienza, all from UM, settled for the bronze medal in the women’s relay while the group of Joyfe Tumulac, Zapphire Urtado of San Pedro College, Shiella Mae Esmale and Kris Vargas of DMMA College of Southern Philippines added another bronze medal performance in the 4x100-meter relay.

At the Ateneo de Naga University, light-weight Marija Catague defeated Maree Pacson of Central Luzon to advance to the next round but finweight Marlon Cruzpero lost to Raffy Futolan of Central Mindanao.

The sepak takraw squad braved the heat of the sun to wallop Central Luzon, 2-0 to start on a high note while the baseball team showed too much firepower in beating Western Mindanao, 15-1 behind the home run of Rogue Emiliano of UM-Tagum in the second inning. “Natsambahan lang gud,” said Emiliano.

The women’s basketball also showed no mercy in thrashing Central Visayas, 77-42 with Geraldine Villa and Lorelaine Gestopa leading the charge with 20 points, each. Charissa Mae Cuevas and Ma. Christina Lantion joined as double-digit scorers with 10 points, apiece.

The women’s volleyball team whipped Ilocos Region, 25-15, 25-23, 25-13 at the Universidad de Sta.Isabel covered court.

Ledesma: Where will we be if CHR had its way?

JUST because the United Nations Humans Rights Council bestowed the Commission of Human Rights a hefty $5-million booty, should CHR now conduct a grand inquisition into what had been reported by UNHRC rapporteur Philip Alston as "extrajudicial killings" in Davao City?

It looks like the United States cannot forgive Mayor Rodrigo Duterte for attempting to detain its agent, a certain Michael Meiring, for investigation after he was seriously injured and brought to the Davao Medical Center for treatment when the improvised bomb he was assembling prematurely exploded.

Back then, Davao City had experienced the brutalities of terrorists who bombed the churches, airport, and seaport facilities, killing scores of innocent civilians and maiming thousands others. For one reason or another, US agents ferreted out Meiring much to the disgust of local police and the Mayor himself. Meiring, to the best of my recollection, was suspected to be a CIA agent with links to Muslim militants and the Abu Sayyaf guerillas. His cover was that of a treasure hunter which was not limited to the search for Yamashita's treasure but also US missing wartime treasury notes. I am inclined to believe that the stoic stand of Duterte against the holding of Balikatan exercise in Davao City must have sprung from that cavalier conduct of the American agents in surreptitiously whisking Meiring into a private jet.

Rapporteur Alston himself was another ugly American peon who came to Davao, conducted his probe on extrajudicial killing in the confines of Marco Polo Hotel. He interviewed some relatives of alleged victims of the fabled Davao Death Squad and a couple of lawyers who had earlier worked with a mayoral candidate whom Duterte trounced in an election. These lawyers had compiled death statistics from gang war, rivalry of drug cartels along with legitimate police operations all into one heap of victims they attributed to DDS. They went on to identify DDS with Mayor Duterte in the hope that the electorate will be horrified and deny the mayor their votes.

To the disgust of Duterte's adversary, the scheme did not work. It cannot be denied that the mayor used an iron fist policy against the drug syndicates, which had spread their tentacles in the city victimizing the rich and the poor. Davao was just liberated from the clutches of communist insurgents, and the horror of terrorist attacks, robbery, and kidnapping syndicates. And then the illegal drug trade surfaced.

The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), somehow, came with a long list of suspects. The late Colonel Efren Alquizar, made it public. Mayor Duterte warned the suspects to either reform or be rehabilitated and they cannot just leave the city.

In retrospect, the revelation of the names of suspects by PDEA must have been a mistake because members of the drug syndicates went after rival groups with impunity and even those of their own members whom they must have suspected will squeal on them. But Davao city residents considers this expos a blessing in disguise for the "killing for silence" effectively eliminated members of drug syndicates.

Such is the reality in the world of the drug lords. But they too scored against the police and police assets. Colonel Alcuizar was killed by a sniper's bullet. His death remained a mystery to date, but his knowledge of who were the members of the narcotics gang must have done him in.

But Mayor Duterte himself ran after the drug syndicates without let-up. He was among those who staged a siege on a shabu laboratory in Dumoy. The assault resulted in the killing of the drug lords and their laboratory technicians who turned out to be undocumented Chinese nationals.

Attempts of politicians from Cotabato and Lanao who were moonlighting as drug dealers to sneak in amphetamines to Davao City was blocked by the mayor who came to know that the contraband was to be loaded on an ambulance. The mayor threatened to bring his war against drugs right in the bastions of the drug lords if they make another attempt.

That in retrospect was what was obtaining in Davao City. Philip Alston who stayed here overnight in the comforts of Marco Polo went back to Manila with death statistics and narratives, which Davao City residents found uncanny as it portrayed only how ignorant he was on the menace that the drug cartel had wrought on the community and how many lives of young people had they wrecked.

I suspect that CHR Chair Leila de Lima had been using the same report that Alston quickly stashed inside his briefcase. Now she sings the same tune and joined in by Speaker Boy Nograles who, ironically, does not seem to have any knowledge of how Davao City was precariously in the brink of becoming a drug haven. How could anyone from Davao deny the scourge that we went through?

But after all is said and done, the alleged extrajudicial killings in Davao that CHR had been so pre-occupied with is nothing compared to what is presently happening in Mexico, Thailand, Canada, and even in New York -- the heartland of America where the mafiosi thrive under the nose of Alston.

As I write this, some cities in Mexico have become a virtual battleground between rival drug syndicates. While they exterminate each other, they have enough firepower and men to fight the Mexican government forces, who are aided by the United States. The casualties in the drug battleground in Mexico have exceeded the daily death statistics in war-ravaged Iraq. What was once a social menace has become a security problem, and now Mexico and America have been waging another veritable war. War against drug lords army.

Now, aren't we happy we live in peace and quiet in Davao City? And then think of the conditions and atmosphere we will be if De Lima and Nograles had their way.

It should spark up discusion rather than be mum about it because there are people who prefer to think for themselves rather than just be spoonfed or 'play safe' or suppress other reactions. the latter may not be the way solve the city's problems. Davao has achieved because there are individuals who choose to make a difference and seek solution in whatever they are able to rather than merely follow the rest of the herd or just because of shallow concern of 'image' to please others. In contrast to other opinion, this forum is also one venue to speak one's mind because the motive is eventually for the city's betterment.

^^ the CHR needs to establish facts first before pointing fingers. they should show their objectivity, and be without bias.

having said that, needless to say, it should be without question na dapat the authorities should get to the bottom of the killings. find out who are behind the killings, whether these are government sponsored or plain gang wars...if plain gang wars, then it should be within their authority to apprehend the culprits.

if these are government sponsored killings, I think dapat itigil na ito. well, first, I'd like to say na meron talagang positive effect sa peace and order itong mga killings. but, 2 wrongs won't make things right. and it's very dangerous and alarming that apparently we are getting used to all these killings. We are in danger of becoming morally corrupted, and nakakatakot din as a Christian to just let things be...I am reminded of the story of Sodom and Gomorrah. I am not comfortable with the idea that justice w/out proper due process is tolerated and sponsored by the state. I've really had a change of heart with the issue. The problem with de Lima et. al. is cheap intawon approach nila probably thinking their strategy would work in Davao with their conventional media puppetry to the gullible, that's how wrong they were. Naa pa gauna ug publish libro wala pa gani nahuman ang investigation, then the title very misleading "you can die anytime" as if tanan mobasa sa libro pareha nila & co. (i.e. drug pushers, extortionists, carnappers, etc. para maka-relate sa title), in attempt to manipulate the psyche of people. Then highly sensationalized and lucrative crimes pa gipalabi sa commision ang criminal rights, er "human rights" sa drug pushers, carnappers et. al. These are obviously well funded people by whosoever pero one thing is obvious, their actions seem to imply their sympathy more on the "rights" of lucrative criminality instead of those that truly need their rights: the victims.

If de Lima & co. is handling the commission, no need to advice them, they already threw their credibility out in the window and corrupted the otherwise noble term "Human Rights".

I don't think there were evidences that contrary to the accusation, it was a state-sponsored phenomenon so as to perceive it as such. What is obviously state sponsored were crime deterrent ones like the 911 and perhaps intelligence networks against criminality that obviously worked against their interest.

The concept of "morals" is not a monopoly of the Christian doctrine. For the individual to learn in his lifetime is a moral achievement in itself (yet some organized religions tend to supress it instead that make people behave more like sheeples lacking in independent thinking and susceptible to manipulation). If a "criminal" refuses to learn that he chose his fate in such a way so as to be forced to learn, even with Eastern Philosophy, the fate he 'chooses' "reincarnates" him either towards higher awareness for finally learning in his previous lifetime, or otherwise to lower level for not being able to learn (as for the Buddhists, they prefer Nirvana over the cycle of rebirth). This may be the reason why from generation thru generation, Humanity in general strives towards higher civilization as accumulated by the learning process of many lifetimes.

With regards to Sodom and Gomorrah, an ancient Hittite document revealed that it was part of the political powerplay of the "gods". A horrible aftermatch actually occured after the destruction of the place, for it backfired against the source of its destruction. In a twist of fate, the "black cloud" (radioactive fallout) remnants were suddenly blown by the wind towards the highly advanced civilization of Sumeria whose "gods" masterminded the destruction of the two cities, causing the annihilation of the entire Sumerian population. In a very short matter of time the once mighty civilization of Sumeria that spanned for thousands of years, suddenly vanished even in history books. As for the survivors of sodom and gomorrah, Lot and his daughters, they eventualy committed incest.

As with the situation in Davao or the fate of ancient Sumeria, life is always a continuous process of learning, that is if the individual has enough sensibility to choose to.

New Samal resort project likened to Singapore's Sentosa
By Jean Duron-Abangan

Davao City (23 April) -- "It's beautiful! It's a promising site. It would be like a small version of Sentosa in Singapore once fully developed."

Architect Ferrychie B. Cuasito summed up her impression and her vision of the 45 hectare property introduced to the public as Samal Highlands Garden Resort.

It is owned by Podador-Alegre-Navarrete and Associates and developed by RJP Realty and Development Corporation which has brought in the planning and architectural expertise of Kintanar, Santamaria, Estalillia, LG&V, and Cuasito and Perez.

The recent broker and press presentation of the property development revealed that the site is located at the northern tip of the Island Garden City of Samal particularly in Barangay San Isidro, District of Babak.

Just nine kilometers away from the Babak Ferry Terminal, the property which stretches along 800-meter beach-line is fronting the big and small Liguid islands.

With a project cost pegged at P800 million, the 45-hectare property will undergo a three-phase development particularly named as Emilia Garden Residences, Terazzas de San Isidro and Costa de Azure.

The Emilia and the Terazzas will unfold a mix of high-end residential areas at a flat and highland terrain sites while the Costa de Azure will feature leisure, recreational and wellness facilities.

Since the residential areas used to be mango and coconut tree plantations, lot buyers would have their share of at least two of the full grown trees, giving a ready-made natural shade.

Lying below a 30-meter-high cliff at the back of Terazzas de San Isidro area, the Costa de Azure would become a versatile place to enjoy sports activities such as swimming, kayaking, jetskiing, rappelling and taking a zip-line thrill.

It would also serve as an educational tour site of students who would like to see and observe the environment of a naturally-grown mangrove area.

There would be gazebos, a coffee shop, a convention center, cottages and hotel rooms at Costa de Azure to serve those who want to do business while enjoying leisure at the beach.

One of the property owners, Dr. Jonathan Alegre during the property development presentation rites said the project started with just a dream of having a place to while away the stressful living of city life.

But the location his family has found, turned out to be more than just a place to rest but a "God-given" site whose grandeur they want to share with other people.

In the same event, co-owner Emilia Podador-Navarette Alegre revealed that the real property development project has been hatched as a tribute to the late Engineer Emilia Lim Podador, who she said, was a visionary and dreamer. (PIA XI) [top]

Camella to launch posh condo project

CAMELLA Communities Davao, a subsidiary of the largest homebuilder in the country, Vista Land and Lifescapes, is set to stage a grand launch of Camella Northpoint on Friday, its exclusive condominium project and first ever vertical development in Davao, the only one of its kind north of the city.

Camella Northpoint is the ultimate choice for convenient and stylish condo living for those who value residing within the heart of the emerging urban centre in the city's northern part, and yet seek a serene and natural environment when they come home.

Situated within the elevated land at the corner of JP Laurel Avenue and Buhangin Road, which was formerly owned by the Scottish family Ker, Camella Northpoint offers its residents a unique living proposition: an exclusive urban home within the heart of the fast emerging business and commercial area of Davao, yet set within an oasis-like environment.

The condo's prime location is very convenient and accessible to all the major locators in the city, such as the international airport, seaport, IT parks and BPO centers, large manufacturing plants, business establishments, and soon-to-rise modern commercial areas and high-end retail and shopping centers.

The development will have all the modern conveniences and first-class amenities, such as a swimming pool, fitness gym, playgrounds, pocket parks, cabanas with grill pits, gardens, a grand entrance and gatehouse, secure perimeter fence, and a clubhouse that features a function room, recreation hall, and a veranda overlooking the pool, among other facilities.

Camella Northpoint is an attractive union of contrasts. It is located within the throbbing growth area of the city, yet its property will be a serene and natural haven replete with lush foliage, natural streams, blooming pocket gardens, and scenic green surroundings.

Imagine coming home to the refreshing sight and scent of Caribbean pine trees dotting the manicured landscape, inviting gardens and promenades full of colorful blooms, and natural streams meandering slowly and freely around the development.

Once inside their condo unit, residents have all the freedom to relax, unwind, and do what they enjoy most without worrying about home repairs, maintenance, and security, which are all managed for them.

The tranquil and relaxing setting of Camella Northpoint will invigorate its residents to face the next day's toil in the modern world, and afford them more time and energy to enjoy all the urban luxuries that are close to their home.

Camella Northpoint's appeal is not only its commercially viable location within this thriving urban enclave, the condo's modern facilities and amenities, and the freedom and convenience of condo living.

This posh and exclusive development will also be Davao's first ever pine estate as Camella Communities intends to dot the whole property with imported Caribbean pine trees to complement the existing lush foliage and the age-old trees that they intend to preserve.

"Camella Northpoint offers the ultimate city living with a plus. Its natural havenlike ambiance will make it a unique oasis in the heart of Davao's urban centre, making it a landmark in the city and making Camella Northpoint the most-sought after residential location in Davao," remarked Marlon Escalicas, general manager of Camella Communities Davao.

The official unveiling of Camella Northpoint will be held tomorrow at the iconic white house perched on the highest point of the project site.

Further inquiries can be made at telephone numbers 298-0387 and 298-0300 or at the Camella Communities offices at Karpentrade Bldg., McArthur Highway, Matina.

Martin said the whole facility will be fully operational after summer. The official opening of the slides will be on May 1.

question:

Is it wise to invest in a property in SIR Village? I plan to convert it into a boarding house or apartment since it's near Agro, UM, Ateneo and other businesses. However, I know that it's kinda in a socialized housing zone or reclamation or something. Im worried that government might take it back or relocate the settlers someday which put my investment to waste.
Do you know how much the usual cost of this property. Somebody offered it to me, a lot with a very modest small house(hardly livable). I think it's a block away from the river.
I know that there's a lot of knowledgeable people here so I hope somebody can enlighten me on this. Thanks a lot.

i would think twice if ever i would invest in that area, especially near the river.:). petty thieves thrive in those kinds of places. in that area you cannot command a good price for your boarding house.

a good place to set up a boarding house is in the juna subdivision or ecoland subdivision area.

Davao gov urges people to nurture nature
By Noel Baguio

Davao City (24 April) -- Amid the tide of technological advances that seem to have dominated our everyday lives, the fact remains that the modern and industrialized world still largely depends on nature for sustenance.

Since nature is indispensable to man's continued existence, Gov. Rodolfo Del Rosario asked his people to nurture it and make it sustainable so that the future generations will also be able to enjoy "what we are presently enjoying."

"Nature has loved us so much by providing the basic necessities for our existence. So, it is but right for us to love nature back, way more than it does to us," Del Rosario said in a reflective mood, after he has been through throwing banters with the local officials during the 5th Anniversary of the Sua-on Nature's Park in Sua-on, Kapalong, Davao del Norte, last April 17, 2009.

Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer Felix Abangin said the nature's park was established five years ago to raise awareness about the importance of nature conservation.

Since then, the project has become fruitful in protecting and managing the natural attractions in the area, such as caves and natural forest, that have increasingly become valuable for the public's enjoyment of nature-related activities.

Gov. Del Rosario also stressed the importance of the park in nature plays, where the children could develop their interest and knowledge of the environment to make them responsive to environmental issues in the future.

During the occasion, the governor unveiled an imposing billboard announcing the passage of Municipal Ordinance 815, Series of 2009, declaring Sua-on Nature's Park as Eco-Tourism Destination of the Municipality of Kapalong.

He was assisted by Mayor Edgardo Timbol, PENRO-DENR Ruth M. Tawantawan, Board Members Janet Gavina, Leopoldo Monteroso, Ely Dacalus, Larry Caminero and Dimitrio Maligro, together with other local officials.

The park covers Puroks 5 and 6 of Special Barangay Sambayon and Puroks 8, 14 and 15 of Barangay Suaon, all in the hinterlands of Kapalong town.

The property has become famous for the Sua-on Underground Water, where the Sua-on River passes through a 1-km cave. It also features the Sambayon Cave, which was believed to be the haven of a giant snake.

The local government of Kapalong is now putting up a protective fence at the opening of the cave to protect the locals from falling and to establish a landmark for cave conservation and for educational purposes. The LGU has partnered with the DSpeCS "Conserve a Cave Project" for community awareness on cave protection, conservation and rehabilitation.

Del Rosario said caves are more than just wonderful places worthy to be explored, since they contain substantial cultural remains and biological life associated with the cave environment.

He said through the RDR WHEELS agenda, with the 7th component called Environment Protection and Rehabilitation, the province continues to help create and build awareness and responsible attitudes towards cave resources for better interdependence of people and nature.

The establishment of the park, Abangin further added, has helped address some environmental issues and concerns affecting the community, such as the slash and burn method, or locally known as 'kaingin', traditionally used by some villagers, which has been criticized as harmful to the environment and its sustainability.

Many villagers have since derived economic benefit from the community-based eco-tourism project. But, Abangin urged the local governments to revive and strengthen the homestay program as a sustainable ecotourism and rural tourism venture, where residents can share to the tourists their local lifestyles close to nature and culture.

He said the province has extended and continues to provide assistance to the local government by sponsoring cave education and protection initiatives, reforestation activities, among other related endeavors. (CIO-Tagum/PIA XI) [top]

Alright, alright, I know what you are thinking. The last word does not really belong in that particular line up. But if you really think about it, maybe it does, doesn’t it?

When we speak of tribes in Davao we often think of the Lumads and the natives who live high above in the mountains; but what you, and the rest of the people who belong in our generation, do not realize is that this isn’t necessarily the case. No matter where you originally come from, no matter how long you have been settled in this city, and no matter how little you know about your other Davaoeño brothers and sisters; you are now part of the New Davaoeño tribe.
Yup, you may not be consciously aware of it but you are now a part of this breed of educated, street-smart, and confident people. The yuppies and students that walk the city streets unknowingly form one homogenous tribe; we share the same interests, attitudes and points of view. We may not know it, but we share a lot of common traits which now dictate, not only how the economy of Davao moves, but also how we deal with each other.

Unlimited Rice, Pito-Baynte and Eating Hearty

Surprisingly (or not), the new breed of Davaoeños is still much like the past generations of Pinoys. We still eat five times a day; merienda is still a must, and Banana-Cue, Pito-Baynte (7 for 20 pesos) Barbeque and Tulo-Diyes (3 for 10 pesos) Siomai are still staples of the dining table, or at least of the side walks right outside the school gates.
We still use sawsawan with every meal, thus explaining the abundance of toyo (soy sauce), suka (vinegar), calamansi (native lemon), sili (chili), patis (fish sauce), ketchup and pinakurat (well. there’s no translation. You will just have to try this one yourself) in all Davaoeño restaurants. We still invite whoever happens to pass by our dining tables to join us in eating with a loud “mangaon ‘ta!”. And we still enjoy eating our favorite sud-an (viand) with a steaming hot cup of rice, no matter how many times Ms. Winfrey tells us to do otherwise.
My humble opinion: Unless Oprah has tried eating a hot, freshly cooked piece of Bulad (dried fish) dipped in vinegar, chili and paired with fresh tomatoes, served over some steaming white rice… she can’t tell us Davaoeños to quit rice completely.
What’s more, unlike the Manila crowd, we are less obsessed with eating healthy thus Kwek-kwek, Fish Ball, Balot, frozen strong beer and, much to the horror of Manilenyos, unlimited rice are favorites among Dabawenyos.
And this is actually good for us: we still get to enjoy our food, no matter how embarrassingly cheap they are; and we don’t even need to feel guilty about stuffing our hearts with all the cholesterol it can take (seriously, now is a good time to bring in the Sisig, Bulalong Kalabaw and Crispy Pata)

Anti-Sosyal, Passing Gas and the Magic F. Torres Brings.

Unlike past generations, we have stopped trying to be “sosyal”. We are now content with being ourselves and even put a premium on simple living. Thus, fancy restos are now being snubbed; we appreciate simple Filipino food like Barbeque, Inihaw na Isda and other home-cooked favorites that can compete (in price) with even the most established fast-food chains.
Even bars are now getting shrugged; partyphiles have gone back to the old Filipino way. It used to be, when you walked the streets at night, you would see a group of men sharing chit-chats over some cold beer in every baranggay, in every kanto, in every sari-sari store in the city. Yes, we have gone back to this very Noypi tradition of conversing over beer, but unlike the generations of our parents, we now find the right place and time for it: thus, as everyone has probably realized by now, F. Torres is where all the magic happens.
And, unlike generations before us, we are never embarrassed to admit that we don’t have money in our pockets, that our feet smell or that we just let out a silent but deadly fart. Trust me, we have become anything but sosyal.

Free WiFi, Chillaxing and Gym Buddies

The only exception to the “anti-sosyal” rule would probably be the coffee shops. We still frequent them even if we know we can get our caffeine fix at home for a much, much, much lower price; because coffee shops are the perfect venue for lazy conversation (and of course, free WiFi). They set the stage for great conversations and somehow, after a trip to your favorite café, you feel relaxed. And this is what we are after: stress-relief.

Wellness and relaxation have become the priorities for the new Dabawenyo tribe. We spend money for spa services and massages, and no, I don’t mean the local manghihilot. We go out partying to forget all the chaos that life brings (yes, Mom and Dad, the only reason why we go out on gimmicks is to relieve stress) and kiss our worries goodbye. And we now enroll in our local gyms to help sweat our stress away (aside from the fact that it is also a great way to find new friends. Gym buddy, anyone?). We put a premium on good living and letting our hair down after a hard day at work. But that doesn’t mean we don’t have our share of mischief and misdemeanor.

Informed Wild Children, Not-So-Squeaky-Clean Images, and Owning up to Mistakes

Older generations often think of us as rowdy or “wild”, but I think my generation is more informed and make wiser decisions. That is not to say that we do not have our share of wild nights, but I’m pretty sure, we have not been doing anything that our parents’ generations haven’t done before. However, the difference is in the way we handle these facts of life. We may be wild (but I am doubtful that we are wilder than any of the generations before us) but this time, we are confident enough to admit that we are. We admit to doing what we do, we are not a generation who tries to seem squeaky-clean; we have gone away with all the “kaplastikan” and we have matured well enough to realize that, although it is not okay to make stupid mistakes, it definitely is okay to own up to them.

Things I Know For Sure

Of course, an article could never capture the true essence of the new Dabawenyo tribe but these things I know for sure: we know what we want and we know how to get it; we have mastered the art of remaining under the radar while moving mountains; we are oblivious to the fact that we have great potential; we still love fried food, Hebi and Choc-nut; we have done away with social-climbing; farting is not that big a sin as it used be and more importantly, we love and appreciate Davao and all the quirks it brings along with it.

enigmatic Samal

Even for locals living in Davao City, nearby Samal that's only about 7 minute ride by barge from the mainland, is an island now gradualy revealing not just her beauty, but also her mystery. It was a paradise-like island we thought we knew. We thought the island was just the next byword for tourism destination owing to its pristine beaches with even some areas having powdery white sand so fine that its shore could diffuse heat of the tropical sun as one walks over it, an island of breathtaking sceneries and unspoilt wonders that Davao region hopes to keep that way while balancing progress. Just a few years ago, it was also discovered that the island's batcave is the world's largest fruit bat (Geoffrey's Rousette species) colony. It turned out there's even more to the island.

From my recent personal research posted in the previous blog, enigmatic Samal may also have one of the country's oldest history, with its rich past even inhabited by legendary giants of yore (well, not necessary "legend," there were actual discoveries of giant skeletal remains that unfortunately were looted or neglected, add up the Philippines authorities' lack of enthusiasm in archiving these otherwise valuable legacies).

It also made me recall of another enigmatic religious group in Samal, the Moncadistas. They are a religious colony known for their tradition of eating uncooked and raw food with no fish or meat. The group was founded by Hilario Camino Moncado (1898-1956). At nine years of age, he graduated with honors from the College of Mystery and Psychics in Calcutta, India. During earlier times, many of the group's male members sported long hairs and beards. The Moncadistas are known to be peaceful and law-abiding citizens.

Another personal observation that I tend to notice while in Samal, were the local dogs, yup, the local canines. Unlike their counterparts in the mainland, it seemed that most island dogs in Samal do not have the habit of barking at strangers. Perhaps it was due to the geographical confines of the island, but I least expected that even these creatures could create a " canine culture" that is uniquely Samal. I wonder if other visitors had noticed it too.

It makes one wonder, even us locals, what enigmatic character would this beautiful island reveal next.

Cebu favorite destination of tourists; Palawan breaks record for domestic visitors
04/24/2009 | 09:08 PM
Email this | Email the Editor | Print | ShareThis

MANILA, Philippines - Cebu and Palawan were the top destination of local and foreign tourists in the first quarter of 2009, the Department of Tourism (DOT) said on Friday.

The DOT also reported that tourist arrivals grew by 10.33 percent for a total of 1.3 million.

A bulk of the number trooped to Cebu, with a share of 32 percent or 184,790 arrivals, followed by Boracay (12 percent), Davao City (11.9 percent), Camarines Sur (11 percent), Zambales (seven percent) and Bohol (five percent).

Two famous destination sites in Palawan, the country’s so-called “last frontier," posted record-breaking growth as more flights were opened to these destinations.

Puerto Princesa City and Coron’s tourist arrivals grew by 392 percent with visitors pouring in from Manila, Cebu, and Caticlan as well as Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia.

The DOT added that water activities like wakeboarding and whale shark interactions have attracted tourists to the Bicol provinces of Camarines Sur and Sorsogon, respectively.

Recreation activities in the pristine beaches of Zambales (Subic), Ilocos Norte and La Union also resulted in double-digit gains in tourist arrivals.

“Overall, the volume of domestic tourists visiting key destinations grew faster at 13% while foreign arrivals recorded a 4% hike in the first quarter," the DOT said.

Increased passenger volumes resulting from cheaper fares of both budget airline Cebu Pacific and the Philippine Airlines (PAL) have enticed tourists to go on holidays — both foreign and local — during the summer season, the DOT earlier said. - Mark Joseph Ubalde, GMANews.TV

Top Stories 28 top Philippine students join AmCham orientation program
04/25/2009 | 06:00 PM

MANILA, Philippines — Twenty-eight college achievers pursuing degrees in accounting, management and economics from various Philippine universities have been chosen to participate in the American Chamber of Commerce’s (AmCham) week-long Business Orientation Program (BOP).

AmCham Executive Director Robert Sears said that the participants in the 7th BOP are from the University of the Philippines system (Diliman, Cebu and Davao), St. Louis University (Baguio), the University of Asia and the Pacific, the Mindanao State University, the University of Baguio, Holy Angels University (Pampanga), Siliman University (Dumaguete), Ateneo de Zamboanga, Centro Escolar University, Colegio de San Juan de Letran, De La Salle University, Far Eastern University, University of Cebu, and the University of the East.

Dubbed as “The Best Meets the Best," the annual AmCham BOP aims to give future business leaders valuable business insights and a “real life" feel of the corporate world.

“The experience leaves them with a better understanding and appreciation of business workings across industries that can be applied to both their learning and career choices," Sears said during the welcome celebration for the participants on April 18.

“Despite the effects of the economic recession on our member companies, support for this project continues. This sends a very strong message of belief and a vote of confidence in the Filipino youth and future leaders of this country," he said.

LGUs urged to set up showrooms for native products
By Noel Baguio

Davao City (24 April) -- In preparation for the influx of tourists this summer, the Regional Development Council (RDC)-XI has enjoined all the local chief executives of all the cities and provinces of the Davao region to establish showrooms for their indigenous products.

During the recent RDC-XI meeting at the Bulwagan ng Lalawigan in Tagum City, the Council approved a resolution directing all the governors and mayors in the region to set up a display center for all their native products and services, especially the products identified under the One Town - One Product (OTOP) program of the government, which promotes entrepreneurship.

OTOP Philippines is a priority program of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to help establish three million new businesses and create six to ten million jobs. Through OTOP Philippines, local chief executives of each city and municipality take the lead in identifying, developing and promoting a specific product or service, which has a competitive advantage.

RDC-XI Chairman Vicente Lao, however, clarified during the council meeting that the local showrooms should not only display the particular OTOP products identified by the LGUs, but also other local products that are endemic in the localities.

He said this will make it easier for the local tourism stakeholders and hosts where to bring the tourists and guests when they look for native products, souvenir items and the likes.

The project is expected to brisk up the income, especially of small entrepreneurs. Lao encouraged the LGUs to tap the resources of the private sector in implementing the project.

The council adopted the resolution after Tourism Regional Director Sonia Garcia has presented the Davao Region Tourism Plan (DRTP), which envisions the Southern Mindanao region to be an anchor world-class destination of the country and a gateway to Mindanao and to the BIMP-EAGA.

The DRTP further envisions the Davao region to be a world-class destination which is safe and secure for tourists with accredited accommodation and standardized services, as well as, an island to highland destination highlighting on culture, adventure and nature with diving and golf.

Under the DRTP, the marketing strategy for the province of Davao del Norte province, which is tagged as the heart of the Davao region, includes the historical tour, banana biz tour, cultural tourism, eco-adventure tourism and culinary tourism.

Dir. Garcia also revealed the DOT-XI will start establishing this month 10 cultural villages within the region that will actually become unique cultural destinations.

"These villages will create unique indigenous products, like weaves, beadings and others that will be produced by the villagers themselves," Garcia said.

She added the project was made possible through an P8-million grant from Senator Loren Legarda, which will be utilized for livelihood programs within the cultural villages. (CIO-Tagum/PIA XI)

Adventures in Davao

by Marist Nagera

For many backpackers and nature trippers, a trip to the country’s gateway to Mindanao is a sure treat.

Davao is a Hispanicized pronunciation of “daba-daba,” the Bagobo word for “fire.” Indeed, Davao is a fire that arouses its visitors with its best destinations from sunup to sundown.

Land of extreme adventures

An hour’s drive away from Davao City is the famous Crocodile Park which is the meeting point for the adventurers who want a taste of wild white water rafting at the heart of Davao River.

Rafting is an extreme sport that will test your determination, balance and fitness to cope with the surprising wildness of the water.

From the river, we trekked uphill to Camp Sabros to surf the skies—a 700- meter trek on a muddy hill but one is rewarded with a breathtaking view of Mt. Apo which seems almost close enough to touch.

At Camp Sabros is the 820-meter-long zipline, the longest zipline in Asia. The zipline is a one-minute ride where the thrills start even before you wear the safety gears.

I donned the safety gears and prepared for a one-minute zipline adventure. The next thing I knew, I was shouting at the top of my lungs and almost woke the birds silently resting beneath the trees with my voice reverberating everywhere.

Haven of culture

Mindanao, as the Land of Promise, is a haven for diverse ethnic groups and indigenous tribes in the country. Contrary to popular belief, Mindanao’s population is now predominantly Christian but sectarian and ethnic conflicts as well as land disputes are central features of the complex 30-year-old conflict on the island.

The Pamulaan Center for Indigenous Peoples’ Education is an educational institution dedicated to the indigenous peoples in the country. Its main thrust is to create culturally appropriate and relevant pathways of training and formation for the indigenous children, youth, community leaders and development workers.

Pamulaan is a home for various indigenous tribes where the youth are trained and formed to live and protect their tribes.

Kristine Mae Sumalinab, a Mandaya, an ethnic group in Mindanao, is a second year Anthropology student at the University of Southeastern Philippines which is located beside the Pamulaan Center. “Dapat talagang maging proud sa culture,” she said. She also hopes to protect and work for their tribe’s culture and tradition one day.

USP is a university exclusively built for Pamulaan’s college students to give them a normal life in the face of today’s discrimination against tribes. Its curriculum is approved by the Commission on Higher Education.

The Pamulaan Center for Indigenous Peoples’ Education and the University of Southeastern Philippines are located at the Mintal Campus, Davao City.

The King’s sanctuary

Some 20 km away from the city is where the king of birds dwells. Despite being critically endangered, the Pithecophaga jefferyi soars high and proud.

Birds of different kinds greet you at the entrance of the Philippine Eagle Center in Malagos. Some birds are rescued from forest destruction and hunters.

The center houses Philippine eagles and many other animal and plant species that are unique to the Philippines. Primarily a research facility, the center is also a vital education venue and a key tourist attraction where visitors are given a glimpse of the country’s forest ecosystem.

A trip to Davao is not complete without paying homage to the country’s mighty eagle. PEC is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., including holidays.

Island tour

A 30- to 45-minute drive from the metropolis is the Island Garden City of Samal where one can literally bond with nature. The paradise at the very end of Samal is the world-famous Pearl Farm—known for its world-class beach facilities.

Peaceful and majestic, indeed, is Davao. It is not a gateway to fire, but a dwelling place of the Philippines’ rich culture and natural wonders.

The description that Davao originated from the word "daba-daba" is erroneous. It is wrong to assume that Davao came from the word "daba-daba," which is a cebuano word and not bagobo; the place was not named by visayan settlers but by its original inhabitants, the lumads; the word originated from davoh or duhwow that means the "place beyond the high grounds." For one there is no "v" in cebuano language.
