Manila Standard (http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/?page=news5_april25_2009)

INTERNATIONAL visitor arrivals in the top 15 provincial destinations outside Metro Manila grew 4.25 percent in the first quarter of 2009, a Tourism Department report says.

But the report does not include arrivals in Metro Manila, which accounts for more than half of the total arrivals in the country.

Data showed that foreign arrivals in 15 destinations led by Cebu, Boracay andDavao reached 383,608 in the first quarter this year compared with 367,973 a year ago.

Domestic arrivals rose faster, at 12.9 percent, to 857,673 from 759,893. Together, foreign and domestic arrivals grew 10.3 percent to 1.31 million from 1.19 million.

Foreign arrivals in Cebu rose by just 0.51 percent, while foreign arrivals in Boracay fell 6 percent. Foreign visitors in Camarines Sur, the Philippines’ wakeboarding capital, jumped 104 percent.

The provincial government there recently opened an 18-hectare man-made lake called Lago del Rey, the biggest in the country, to complement the wakeboarding park set up in 2005. The facility offers family-oriented activities such as boat rides, fishing and swimming.

Cebu was the most frequently visited destination by foreign tourists with 184,790 arrivals followed by Boracay (63,903), Zambales (25,252), Camarines Sur (24,976), and Bohol (24,350).

The Tourism Department said that with the increase in domestic and foreign arrivals, capacity in key tourist destinations had been increased by 1,231 new rooms in the first quarter, entailing a total investment of over P8 billion.

“With an aggregate cost of P8.016 billion, these new investments directly employed 1,286 people,” the department said.

The opening of the P3.18-billion Imperial Palace Water Park, Resort and Spa increased the room supply in Cebu by 4 percent to 14,792. With 616 rooms, the resort provided employment to 780 workers.

Shangri-La’s Boracay Resort and Spa, a high-end, 217-room resort on Boracay Island, opened just in time for the influx of tourists on vacation and long holidays. The resort has initially hired 488 workers.

Seven companies investing in 28 cluster villas, and for a total cost of P761.9 million in the Amanpulo Tourism Enterprise Zone in Palawan, also began operating during the first quarter.

In Metro Manila, the opening of Legend International’s Park, Bed and Breakfast Hotel, Eurotel Hotel Branch in Makati, and the expansion of Oakwood Serviced Residences, increased the total room supply by 320.

The department said that by year-end, another 1,946 people would be employed once the additional 2,315 rooms became operational in various parts of the country.

These include Manila Ocean Park (120 rooms), The Picasso Serviced Residences (136 rooms), Newport Marriott Hotel (342 rooms), and Maxims Hotel (178 rooms) in Metro Manila.

Also set to open are Radisson Hotel (400 rooms) in Cebu, Crowne Regency (449), Phonex Hotel (130 rooms), Boracay Regency Lagoon (120 rooms), Seven Stones (100 rooms), Grand Water (100 rooms) in Boracay, Microtel Inns and Suites (50 rooms) in Puerto Princesa, Summer Ridge (108 rooms) in Tagaytay, and Discovery Bay Misibis (82 rooms) in Albay.

The department said it also endorsed five projects worth P6.323 billion in the first quarter this year. These will generate 6,340 jobs for local residents.

A $200-million luxury spa and resort is also set to be developed by Banyan Tree on a 55-hectare property on Diwaran Island of Palawan. This project will generate 8,000 direct and indirect jobs during the planning, construction and operational stages from 2009 to 2012.

In Subic, Harbor Yacht Services Philippines is building a restaurant and resort in a marina with an investment of P36.1 million.

A P500-million Wakeboard Park was also set to rise up on a 12-hectare area in Silang, Cavite, the department said. Roderick T. dela Cruz

Tourist Arrivals Up 10.3 %

The country's top tourist destinations posted higher tourist arrivals in the first quarter of the year despite the prevailing global financial crisis, the Department of Tourism (DOT) reported.

Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano said a total of 1.3 million tourists visited the country's top destinations in the months of January to March, up by 10.3 percent compared to the first quarter of last year.

Durano said Cebu attracted the biggest volume of visitors with a share of 32 percent followed by Boracay 12 percent, Davao City with 11.9, Camarines Sur at 11 percent, Zambales several percent and Bohol, five percent.

He added that domestic tourist arrivals in Puerto Princesa City and Coron in Palawan posted a record breaking growth of 392 percent as more flights were mounted to these destinations from Manila, Cebu, and Caticlan as well as Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia.

Local visitors also flocked to Camarines Sur for wakeboarding, Surigao del Sur, Sorsogon for whale shark interaction, Zambales for recreation, Ilocos Norte and La Union for sightseeing and beach holiday resulting in double digit gains in these destinations.

"Overall, the volume of domestic tourists visitng key destinations grew faster at 13 percent while foreign arrivals recorded a four percent hike in the first quarter," Durano said.

Hmmm... May kulang yata sa list as per Katerine...

All I know is that Davao ranks 3rd amongst tourinst destinations in Pinas. Ewan ko lang ang city ni Katherine K kung anong ranking nila.

I personally know the lawyer and the SM Regional Manager mentioned here...:)

SM City mall to rise in Lanang (http://http://dailymirror.ph/Apr/business04282009&01.html)
BY JUDY QUIROS

SM Prime Holdings will soon open an SM City Mall branch in Lanang, Davao City.

Lawyer Pearly Jayagan, regional head of SM City Human Resource, said the planned second SM mall will rise within a 10-hectare property at the former Lanang Golf and Country Club owned by the Dakudao family.

“We are now preparing for SM Lanang,” Jayagan said yesterday at the Kapehan sa Dabaw held at Café Rysus SM City Davao.

She said the SM mall is expected to generate over 1,000 jobs.

She declined to elaborate further on the level of preparations the company is currently conducting for the planned mall, including the target date of the project’s completion and operation.

The Mirror learned the feasibility study of the planned mall is already completed.

In an interview with reporters, Debby Go, SM regional manager for Mindanao, refused to give specific details on the project but confirmed that it will be constructed at the Lanang Golf and Country Club site.

Structures at the golf site have already been removed to pave the way for the SM mall project.

Go said she is optimistic there is a market at the north side of the city in light of the growing economy in the area.

SM Prime Holdings is also set to open a mall branch in General Santos City.

Developer: Business in Davao remains good

REAL estate giant Filinvest reported Saturday that business in Davao City and the rest of Southern Mindanao remains "good" amid financial crisis affecting economies worldwide.

"Our company remains firm, steadfast in these trying times," said Tristan Las Marias, Filinvest vice president for Visayas and Mindanao.

Citing their latest development project in Davao City, the medium rise condominium complex at Ecoland subdivision called One Oasis. Las Marias said it has been surprisingly experiencing brisk sales performance.

"Southern Mindanao is not yet affected by the crisis," he categorically said. "There is a steady market growth and business has been good."

For most of its projects in the region, Las Marias said that their expectations were not only met, but were even surpassed. Some of the projects of Filinvest include the high-end luxury resort development Kembali Coast in the Island Garden City of Samal.

"The phase 1 of Kembali is already sold out, we are now in phase 2," Las Marias said.

Moreover, Las Marias said they have at least two more projects in the drawing board for Davao City which they hope to start within the year.

"We look for opportunities while others step on the brakes," Las Marias said. (CPM)

Hmmmm... Nasan na kaya yung nagsasabing landbanking lang ang ginawa ng SM sa Lanang? Hmmmm...

LGUs to set up showrooms for products

By BEN D. ARCHEApril 26, 2009, 3:46pmDAVAO CITY – The Regional Development Council (RDC) in Southern Mindanao (Region 11) has asked all local government units (LGUs) in the region to establish showrooms for their indigenous products in preparation for the influx of tourists, particularly this summer.

The RDC 11 approved a resolution directing all local chief executives of all cities and provinces in the region to set up display centers for native products and services during a meeting held at the Bulwagan ng Lalawigan in Tagum City recently.

The resolution stated that local showrooms should display products identified under the One-Town, One Product (OTOP) program of the government that promotes entrepreneurship.

Through OTOP Philippines, the governors and mayors will take the lead in identifying, developing, and promoting specific products or services in their respective provinces, cities and municipalities.

The council adopted the resolution after the Region 11 office of the Department of Tourism (DoT 11) presented the Davao Region Tourism Plan (DRTP) which envisions Southern Mindanao as a world-class destination and a gateway to Mindanao and to the BIMP-EAGA.

RDC-11 chair Vicente Lao advised during the meeting that other local products, which are endemic in the locality, should also be displayed aside from the OTOP products identified by the LGUs.

Hindi naman sa walang developments. It's just that nakakasawa na pagusapan yung developments kasi dito nalang palagi. Dapat give chance to others. Kaya nga pinaguusapan natin sila as our simple way of helping them catch the attention of investors na dito na lang lagi sa Davao nagsisiksikan.

So yan ang difference... Pero dapat hindi pa din counted ang area ng parking building kasi magiging misleading yung figures IMO. After all, most people go to the malls to shop and not to park (except if I am studying in SPC na katabi ng Gmall carpark).

Nice welcome tower. How i wish Riverfront Corp City will be purchased by another developer. Witnessing the suuuuupppper slow paced development of other Sta Lucia projects here in the capital made me lost my confidence on Riverfront. If Sta Lucia pa rin magdadala nito, cguro it will take around 20 years pa before madeveloped tlga ang buong corp city.

Filinvest to develop new

Filvinvest vice president for Visayas and Mindanao Tristan Las Marias said the company’s sales performance in Davao City and in Mindanao remains brisk.

Speaking at a press conference over the weekend at The Marco Polo, Davao, Las Marias said a three-story medium-rise residential condominium in a property in Bajada owned by the Ayala Corporation is now on the pipeline. This is in lieu of the original plan to put up a hotel in Buhangin, he said.

Las Marias said the company is in the stage of studying the design of the planned project and has included it in its timetable for this year or early next year.

The 2.5-hectare Ocean Cove project in Dumoy, which only recently got the preliminary approval of the City Council, is expected to start on the ground.

Las Marias said the company is optimistic the Council will subsequently rule in favor on the project’s development permit.

Las Marias said the major market of Filinvest are the locals and those outside Davao City, not the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), the sector which is most hurt by the global financial downturn.

For instance, phase 1 of its high-end 50-hectare Kembali Coast residential project in Kaputian, Island Garden City of Samal, which is now 70 percent developed, is almost sold out with 50 percent of the buyers from Davao City and 50 percent from those outside the city.

Filinvest has 10 subdivision projects in Davao City worth around P12 billion. Three have been completed: Villa Mercedita in Dumoy, Orange Grove in Matina-Pangi and Fuente de Villa Abrille in Tulip Drive-Matina.

Filinvest recently held a ground breaking for its P1.5 billion One Oasis condominium project—a cluster of seven medium-rise residential building to be completed within two years–beside SM City in Ecoland and Le Jardin medium rise residential building in Maa fronting NCCC Mall.

Despite the company’s steady growth, it is still bracing for the worst impact of the global crisis, Las Marias said.

“We don’t think of a doomsday scenario. We’re just waiting for it to happen and we are getting ready for the blow,” he said.

SM Prime is laying the groundwork for a new shopping complex in Davao City’s Lanang district, about eight kilometers north of the city’s downtown. The company currently operates SM City Davao at Ecoland district, a kilometer south of the central business district.

The proposed shopping mall will need an initial 1,000 workers, said lawyer Pearly Joan L. Jayagan, SM City Davao Human Resources Department head.

Late last year, SM Prime bought a 10-hectare lot, previously hosting the Lanang Golf and Country Club, from the Dakudao family, one of the landed clans in this city. Although a member of the Dakudao clan confirmed the sale of the property to SM Prime, he declined to reveal the amount involved.

Late last year, workers have started demolishing the golf club apparently in preparation for the development of the new shopping mall.

Debbie A. Go, SM regional manager for Mindanao, declined to give details on the plan but confirmed that a retail complex would be constructed on the new site, noting the "big potential" in the northern sections of the city where upscale subdivisions are located.

The SM project, however, is just one of the major developments in the northern part of this metropolis.

In the second week of May, JG Summit Holdings, Inc.’s Robinsons Cybergate Davao is set to formally open, hosting contact centers and information technology-related firms as well as retail shops.

Also under development is Ayala Land, Inc. and the Anflo Management and Investment Co.’s 10-hectare Abreeza complex in Bajada district just two kilometers north of the city’s downtown. The P5-billion project will be completed in 2011, but officials of the two companies said last year its shopping mall will open in early 2010.

The New City Commercial Corp. (NCCC) has also bought a potential shopping mall site in Panacan district, near the Davao international airport and just about two kilometers from where the planned SM Davao north mall will be located.

NCCC currently operates two shopping malls in the city, and two others in Puerto Princesa in Palawan and in Tagum, Davao del Norte. It also operates a chain of convenience stores in this city.

No one among the members of the Lim family which owns the mall chain would confirm the reported acquisition of the Panacan land, however. — Kristine Jane R. Liu and Carmelito Q. Francisco

Inday Sara wants amendment of city’s chopsuey zoning law
Wednesday, 29 April 2009 04:33

http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/6013/coveredge2issue8.jpg (http://img403.imageshack.us/my.php?image=coveredge2issue8.jpg)

TO remove opportunities for corruption and correct outdated provisions, Vice Mayor Sara Duterte- Carpio considers amending Davao City’s zoning ordinance a top priority in the remaining months of the current Davao City Council, if not the next city administration.
“I’ve been always supportive of the move to amend the Davao City zoning ordinance to accommodate changes because it is already outdated.”
Inday Sara, acting city mayor when interviewed last week, calls the city ordinance “chopsuey” because it has not been followed religiously.
“The way I look at it, nahimo nang chopsuey ang atong urbanization-- naay agri nga nagtupad og residential, poultry nagtupad sa balay sa tawo, naay agri nga naging industrial, so nawala na tong essence sa zoning,” Inday Sara said.
Inday Sara said ordinance defines the various areas of the city according to purpose such as agricultural, industrial, residential and other categories, but such zonification plan should be pursued by the city government and prohibit changes for a longer period of time, instead of allowing the city council to reclassify areas as often as possible.
She said allowing the city council to reclassify the established zones not only defeats the essence of zonification, it has also created opportunity for corruption and controversy like the current boiling bribery scandal in the city legislature.
Certain councilors have denied having been involved in extortion but a number admitted to have been given financial gifts from a certain subdivision developers as a token of gratitude for the council’s approval of their request for zoning reclassification.
She said changing some of the provisions of the city zoning ordinance ought to be given priority even by the next city government, if the current city government fails to finish the job.
The vice mayor said that lack of technical expertise among city councilors is one of the reasons why it took a long time for the body to finalize the amendments.
Davao City’s revised zoning ordinance, passed in 1996, was only approved for implementation by the Housing Land Use Regulatory Board in mid-2001 amid criticism that the document had already become outdated at the time of approval by HLURB. The zoning code regulates the use of the city’s land resources in the implementation of the Comprehensive Development Plan of Davao City. It is supposed to be updated every five years.
Embodied in the ordinance is a provision that allows the housing committee to approve application by housing developers for locational clearance, site development proposals, and exemptions from the zoning ordinance. This power spawns allegations of corruption, bribery and extortion.
The Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCCII) earlier passed a resolution urging the city government to harmonize the various industries and sectors in the re-assessment of the zoning plan.
Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte, in response, assured the business sector that the review and updating of the plan “will engage various sectors to draw and illicit their valuable inputs including their specific sectoral interests and concerns.”
The Office of the City Planning and Development Coordinator, which serves as the technical secretariat, reported that it has completed the gathering of primary and secondary data necessary for updating of the development plan and the amendment of zoning ordinance.
“The data and information obtained from authoritative sources such as researches and technical studies will be presented to various sectors,” said Inday Sara, who represented Mayor Duterte in the DCCCII annual business convention last year.
“Together with the inputs from various sectors, the scientific data shall be used as basis in delineating boundaries, in classifying areas for specific land uses and in harmonizing the various industries,” she added.

ICT accounts for 40% of available jobs, says exec
Wednesday, 29 April 2009 06:05
THE information and communications technology (ICT) industry is still the top provider of jobs in the Davao Region, said Regional Director Elmer Talavera of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority.
Talavera said that f the available 20,000 jobs in the local market, 40% of them are in the ICT industry and that 80% are in the private sector. Only a measly 10% of the total jobs available are in the government.
“The role of the government is to strengthen the campaign to inform those looking for jobs where jobs are available,” Talavera added.
Because of the availability of jobs in the ICT industry, he said the government has come up with scholarships that are granted through his agency.
And he explained that unlike in previous years when the scholarships were coursed through members of the House of Representatives, at present anyone can go to his office and inquire about the available slots.
He said the agency has also gone into “wholesale” scholarship offering by coming up with bunches of scholars who want to avail.
Last year, industry leaders complained that recruitment was difficult considering the dearth of available applicants. Lizabel G. Holganza, president of the ICT Davao Inc., an umbrella organization of ICT industry stakeholders, said her company, MTC Academy, even signed a memorandum of agreement with a Cebu city-based company which wanted to recruit 200 workers.
The memorandum of agreement was necessary so that graduates of the academy, which trains those who want to become medical transcriptionists, would have immediate employment waiting for them.

This will spur more activities within Mindanao as travel from Davao to Cagayan de Oro is cut to an hour from a usual 10-hour road trip,” said Candice Iyog, CEB vice president for marketing and distribution.

“This is continuing proof of our commitment to make air travel accessible to every Juan and support to the government’s agenda of developing Mindanao as a vibrant destination,” she said.

CEB is the largest airline operating in Davao and Cagayan de Oro, offering the most number of routes and flights in the region. The airline flies from Davao to Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Iloilo, Manila and Zamboanga. It also flies from Cagayan de Oro to Cebu and Manila.

After the seat sale, the lowest year-round ‘Go Lite’ fare from Davao to Cagayan de Oro starts from P688.

For bookings, passengers may log on to www.cebupacificair.com or call the reservations hotline at 702-0888 (Manila) / 230-8888 (Cebu), or visit their nearest travel agent.

Now on its 14th year, CEB has the youngest aircraft fleet in the Philippines. It flies to 15 international cities across Asia and 31 domestic destinations.

Davao market still strong

DAVAO CITY — Filinvest Land, Inc. is planning to start two more projects, including a hotel, in this city, with an executive noting that the property market is still in good shape.

Tristan Las Marias, company vice-president for Visayas and Mindanao, noted that Filinvest’s seven-building One Oasis Davao condominium project, still under construction, has been enjoying brisk sales.
....
The other is a medium-rise hotel, which will be just across the 10-hectare Abreeza, a mixed-use project of Ayala Land, Inc. and the Anflo Group of Companies.

The medium-rise project, which will sit beside the city’s Redemptorist Church, will be built instead of the previously announced businessmen’s hotel near the Davao international airport. "The [hotel project in Buhangin district] has been overrun by events," he said.

Sad day for Davao. I don't know this gentleman on a personal level but I'm privy to his dedication to his job.

Gempesaw passes away
BY DIANA LHYD SUELTO
Mindanao Daily Mirror
April 30, 2009

Traffic Management Center (TMC) chief Celso Gempesaw passed away at 2:15 p.m. yesterday while being operated on at the Davao Doctors Hospital for a heart ailment.

He was 64.

Fely Villegas, liaison officer of TMC and the personal aide of Gempesaw, told the Mirror that Gempesaw had been admitted at the heart center of the Davao Medical Center (DMC) on Monday after complaining of chest pains.

She said Gempesaw had at first not wanted to be admitted because it would interfere with his work at the TMC. She said Gempesaw also insisted on going to his office to sign some papers.

Gempesaw did not inform anyone of his condition and opted to stay at the DMC instead of a private hospital because he did not want anybody to know of his condition, Villegas said.

He was only transferred to Davao Doctors Hospital yesterday for his operation.

On Wednesday night TMC employees conducted a blood donation drive but they were oblivious to the fact that the blood was being collected for their chief. “They thought they were donating blood for one of the mayor’s men,” Villegas said.

Villegas reckoned that Gempesaw’s health suffered because he was overworking.

She said Gempesaw was very active and would sometimes do the work of TMC employees.

She said his health may have also been affected by the controversy that hit TMC in which some traffic enforcers were caught extorting money from motorists.

No one at the TMC knew of Gempesaw’s condition except for Villegas.

A teary-eyed traffic officer, who immediately went to Davao Doctors after hearing of Gempesaw death, said he was shocked when he heard the news.

The traffic officer, who asked not to be named, was all praises for his boss, saying Gempesaw was always looking after the welfare of the men under him.

zip city is at hilltop resto right?

sana from hilltop to jack's ridge yan para longest zip from one resto to another resto hehehe.

grabe na talaga ka addict sa zipline ang davao. pwede na siguro tayo tawaging zip line capital ng pinas, why?

1. camp sabros zip 1 - 320 meters
2. camp sabros zip 2 - 405 meters
3. camp sabros zip 3 - 820 meters (now the longest in ASIA, broke outlands' record)
4. davao outland adventure - 720 meters (formerly longest in ASIA) http://showbizandstyle.inquirer.net/breakingnews/breakingnews/view/20081129-175179/Asias-longest-zip-line-in-Davao
5. eden zip line - 200 meters
6. samal zip line - ??? meters, unique kasi sa dagat ang bagsak
7. zip city - ??? meters

parang plano ng sabros brothers na i beat ang 2 kilometers world record. antayin.

and with the soon to be largest wakeboarding in ASIA sa may Mintal, Davao City, parang puro biggest, longest, highest na ang target ng davao. nakakalula na ah.

inspermness (tnx again kulas ) to PBP, napupuno na rin ang dalawang towers nila. pero i agree highrise office condos are not "IN" pa nowadays sa davao. pero sa residential condo, i guess may market na. minsan nga sa may SM napatanga yung agent ng sabihan sila ng prospect na "kung highrise ito bibili ako for sure, alanganin kasi ang condo na midrise". i hope marinig na yan ng mga developers, sayang ang prime lot kung midrise lang.

inspermness (tnx again kulas ) to PBP, napupuno na rin ang dalawang towers nila. pero i agree highrise office condos are not "IN" pa nowadays sa davao. pero sa residential condo, i guess may market na. minsan nga sa may SM napatanga yung agent ng sabihan sila ng prospect na "kung highrise ito bibili ako for sure, alanganin kasi ang condo na midrise". i hope marinig na yan ng mga developers, sayang ang prime lot kung midrise lang.

Mao im still hoping nga highrise ang ibutang sa Filinvest sa Redemptorist lot nila..prime area kaayo eh then balak nila butngan ug hotel aside from condo diba? waste of prime space kaayo kung mala one oasis gihapon IMO..
