Tuesday, June 23, 2009
AMID the rise of condominium projects in Davao City, one development shines above the rest with its new concept of urban living not found in any other condo projects.
Camella Northpoint is a condominium community that is clearly a cut above the rest with its seamless blend of urban living and refreshing bounty of nature.
Touted as the first Pine Estate in Davao, Camella Northpoint is situated in an already lush location with age-old acacia trees and other verdant plant life.
The developer, Camella Communities, brings the notch even higher by planting imported Caribbean pine trees that are now seen growing robustly around the property.
"While other condominiums are merely stand-alone concrete structures, Camella Northpoint is ensconced within a refreshing natural environment teeming with plant life, fresh air, and an oasis-like ambiance," said Marlon Escalicas, general manager of Camella Communities Davao.
Camella Northpoint will rise right at the heart of the economic hub in north Davao, where the major city locators are found such as the international airport, seaport, large manufacturing companies, and business centers such as IT parks and modern office buildings catering to the BPO industry.
It is also a stone's throw away from modern commercial areas and high-end retail and shopping centers such as Abreeza, which is currently under construction, reported development of another big mall in Lanang, new Robinson's Cybergate and supermarket, along with other popular commercial, dining, entertainment, and shopping complexes such as Damosa Gateway, Damosa Business Center, Victoria Plaza, and Gaisano Mall.
"Camella Northpoint is in a very prime location which is very convenient for urban living. The condo is also a good investment," remarked businessman Erwin Tan of Kasuotan.
"Most other condo projects in the city boast of locating somewhere within the business district, but Camella Northpoint is situated at the most vantage location," said Escalicas, adding its prime location and verdant natural surroundings are a proposition unmatched by any other condo development in the city.
Camella Communities welcomes inquiries about Camella Northpoint at its office at Karpentrade Building, or at telephone numbers 298-0387 and 298-0300.

Davao dad mulls new odd-even scheme
by RG Alama
Davao City (24 June) -- City Councilor Peter Laviña has passed a resolution which proposes a landmark odd-even traffic scheme for the city's major thoroughfares.
The proposal would involve a number-coding scheme. Plate numbers ending in odd numbers are banned in major city streets in particular days as private vehicles with plates ending in even numbers are only allowed. In particular days when odd-plate vehicles are allowed, even-plated vehicles are disallowed from plying these selected routes.
Laviña said the proposal stems that the number of vehicles in the city is increasing yet the there are no significant infrastructure expansion like multi-level streets that could accommodate an increasing number of vehicles. He foresees the existing road system would eventually be strained by traffic.
"About 80% of Davao's vehicles are privately owned," Laviña said. With increasing population, he sees an increasing number of vehicles.
He said for one, J.P Laurel will soon be congested with the opening of the Ayala mall and the planned SM development in the former Lanang Golf and Country Club. McArthur Highway in the city's south he also said is already clogged with vehicles.
"Time will come magiging congested na ang kalsada natin." Laviña said, there must be a plan to decongest the streets. And one of his proposals is implementing an odd-even traffic scheme.
The scheme will be implemented on the City's busiest strips. Only public utility vehicles will be exempted from the scheme. Laviña also says this is also an effort to mitigate climate change as a lesser number of vehicles plying the city's streets would mean lesser number of pollutants.
Laviña says that vehicles are the number one contributors of greenhouse gases which exacerbate the effects of climate change. (PIA XI
or he could propose for better means of transport especially sa mga heavy routes..buses anyone? and kanang pang mass transport jud na bus na 50% kay standing area para daghan makasakay..
we need radical changes sa atong transport system..encourage the use of public transportation
davaob4now June 24th, 2009, 06:04 AM yes i agree..buses would be a great tool...
because it can carry more passengers and maybe the fare would be cheaper.
naa lala ko tuloy ang comment ng isang traveller sa isang website na hinid ko na matandaan...about cebu....na "such a big city, a lot of cars in the road, there is traffic congestions, but i was shocked why such a big city havent got buses to transport passengers from place to another"...
or maybe a city train could really materialize na,,,:)

Dakpa ang akong tiil June 24th, 2009, 08:46 AM Chamber to ask city to repair wiring facilities
By Carlo P. Mallo
Monday, June 22, 2009
Sun.Star Davao
DAVAO City Chamber of Commerce and Industries Inc. will ask the City Government to rehabilitate the city's wiring facilities and recommend a more cost-efficient underground wiring system.
This came up during the launching of the first Innoport, a portable Innolab, in Davao City.
"Cities around the globe are already going underground, even old cities like Paris," Simeon Marfori, president of DCCCII, said. "If old cities in Europe can do it, then why can't we do it now while we are still young."
Even telecommunications giant Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) preferred to have their cable lines underground.
"It is more cost efficient for us maintenance wise," Katrina Abellarde, SME Nation vice president of PLDT, said. "Given the choice, we prefer to go underground."
Marfori said the government should act now, or even start to take such measures into consideration while there is still a lot of elbow room.
"If we should do it, we should do it now," Marfori said.
In Metro Manila, the benefits of having an underground wiring system were experienced by tenants and residents of Rockwell in Makati City.
After a storm ravaged the nation's capital, electric posts were toppled putting the entire National Capital Region into an abyss of darkness, except for Rockwell, whose underground wiring system was spared from the storm.
"If the government can spend P2.8 billion on so many things, and banks are willing, an underground wiring system is not impossible," Marfori said.
The DCCCII president said they will officially propose such measures to the City Government of Davao within the year, after the chamber's general assembly.

Davao City convenes new council body to review zoning
Properties
Written by Manuel T. Cayon / Reporter
Wednesday, 24 June 2009 20:35
DAVAO CITY—The City Council here has formed an interim body to review the 15-year-old zoning plan of the city in its bid to keep abreast of the fast pace in development and housing projects as well as to cut down on the controversies arising from the application of the ordinance.
Councilor Peter Laviña, a member of the five-person committee, said the interim body would “collect all data and information” regarding the zoning plan of the city since it was passed in 1994.
The ordinance was supposed to undergo a regular review every five years, “but none had been done yet.”
Since then, the city has seen many projects, both industrial, commercial and housing and even resort facilities, being put up.
The city has been the scene of robust construction of industries and housing projects despite a global financial slowdown, and in instances, the City Council would be asked to reclassify some areas to accommodate them.
“In many instances, the City Council would be sought to reclassify certain locations to accommodate certain businesses here,” he said.
No major controversies have occurred in reclassification of lands.
“Visitors to the city would mistake us for having no zoning ordinance,” he said.
He said that certain developments need to be incorporated into a new plan “such as the geohazard assessment of the Mines and GeoSciences Bureau.”
“With this one, it would be an automatic no-no for any activity in landslide-prone areas, for instance,” he said.
The city also needs to resolve certain classifications for certain industries. “Another example is the issue of whether or not the food and beverage industries are heavy industrial?”.
For many councilors, “it is not.”
He said the interim body has met twice since Vice Mayor Sara Duterte “created the formation of the new technical committee to review the city zoning”. In those meetings, the body chose Councilor Pilar Braga to head the committee.
The old zoning plan was approved by the City Councilor in 1996, or two years after it was crafted and approved by the study body. Laviña said that the Housing and Land Use Regulatory Board approved it only in 2001.
“I called for a review that year, but it never happened,” he said.

JavierP June 24th, 2009, 10:20 PM Hi Davao forumers,
I have been doing some "backreading" but i guess i couldnt find some answers to my questions. My family (mom, dad, bro) are going to Davao this July 23 for a 4-day vacation.
- Can you suggest a good hotel (budget hotel preferably) near Sasa Wharf? Part of the itinerary is to go to Samal Island on the 2nd day so mas ok ata pag malapit sa wharf and also hindi rin malayo sa City mismo.
- Is Paradise Island a good choice when in Samal? I just couldnt afford:lol: Pearl Farm so I would appreciate if someone can suggest a beautiful (and affordable) resort in Samal (with pool and not too crowded).
Thanks in advance guys. Ive stayed in Davao and studied at AdDU for a year (graduated at XU) but that was like 7 years ago and I never had a chance to tour Davao that time, so consider this my first time

Davao City (25 June) -- Although it is beginning the effects of the global economic crisis, particularly the first quarter of the year, Davao businessmen are still upbeat about the region's investment and regional climate.
Simeon Marfori, President of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industries Inc.(DCCII) said that despite the country registering a paltry 0.4% increase in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), people are still optimistic that things will turn around.
"We're still moving." Marfori said, during the Club 888 media forum held last Wednesday (June 24) at the Marco Polo Hotel Davao. Marfori believes that the region's agriculture-based industries are cushioning the impact of the crisis, since food are indispensable commodities.
He said that regional figures are still hopeful despite the downturn. The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) GDP growth target for Region XI is pegged at 4.9 to 5.9 percent for 2009. With agriculture, tourism and mining as the driving force of the regional economy, it is projected that the regional GDP growth rate will breach the 5% mark.
Marfori said that they are expecting growth in the housing and real estate sectors. He also said there are investors who are eyeing large commercial developments. He cited the investments along Davao City's J.P. Laurel Avenue where investors are just waiting for the opening of Abreeza, Ayala Land's P4-billion retail and IT complex.
Another expected engine for regional growth is tourism. According to Giovanni Aportadera, City Tourism Operations Officer, Davao is the country's third top tourist destination next to Cebu and Boracay. In the first quarter of 2009, the Department of Tourism has recorded about 156,468 arrivals taken from January to March figures. (PIA XI)

Durian farm in Davao to be converted by DMCI into upscale residential project
DAVAO CITY — A 50-hectare durian farm in this city’s Catalunan Pequeno district, 30 minutes from downtown, will be converted into an upscale residential subdivision project.
Leonora P. Gutierrez, area manager of DMCI-Urban Property Developers, Inc., said the project is expected to receive approval from the Davao City council as soon as documentation is complete.
What makes the project attractive, she said, is the subdivision’s "orchard character."
"We will showcase our durian farm to the buyers," she added. She declined to provide details on the project’s cost since the application is still pending before the city government.
DMCI, like big property developers with presence in the city, has continued to embark on big-ticket projects on account of strong response from Southern Mindanao’s property market.
Daniel T. Lim, head of the architectural firm Far East Associates, said the market for residential projects that start from P1.5 million for a small condominium unit has remained very active here despite the economic downturn’s perceived effect on overseas workers.
Aside from the Catalunan Pequeno project, DMCI is also developing another horizontal residential subdivision in Matina district, a 30-hectare site on a rolling terrain that has been the subject of a controversy after homeowners associations in the area complained of a possible adverse impact on the ecosystem.
DMCI is also busy constructing its second vertical residential project, Magallanes Residences, located at the back of city hall. The three-structure condominium complex has 115 units per building. Its first project here, which was sold out even before it was completed two years ago, was Ecoland 4000, with two buildings of 56 units each located right next to SM City Davao.
In the third quarter of the year, the company will also start the construction of its third condominium project, the Palmetto Place in this city’s Ma-a district. The project will have four buildings with each building having five floors.
Aside from DMCI, other property firms with medium-rise condominium complex projects in this city are Filinvest Land, Camella Homes, and Holiday Garden Island Development Corp. — Carmelito Q. Francisco

Covington: I'll make a bet
"TUBIIIIIIIG."
It's Monday morning, a peak time for water demand as Davao’s workforce showers and bathes. I know that if I’m under the shower rose and someone fills a kettle in the kitchen, my shower water gurgles to a dribble.
And yet this is Buhangin, a long stone's throw from the diversion road underpass -– not out in the boondocks by any means -- I wonder what will happen when all these new condos are built and occupied with water-thirsty residents. Will I be leaving a bath faucet on all day to make sure I’ve water for the evening?
The answer is probably yes -- Davao may be expanding exponentially outwards and upwards but when it comes to essential infrastructure, there's a dire inactivity.
You know what I mean. Look at the Hedcor/DCWD water/power struggle. Endless debate, committee hearings, site visits to the country and yet nothing happens.
Look at the roads (or, rather, better not look at the roads). Still the same old arteries as twenty years ago. A little widening here, two feet of cement added there (as on the circumferential road) but where are the bulldozers blazing the new highways and roads which will be required not so far into the future?
Look at the worsening pollution in our gulf -- absolutely nothing to do with the squattervilles-by-the-sea that remains by the sea. Even when burnt out, they're allowed to rebuild in exactly the same place to carry on contributing their daily business directly into the briny -- the same briny which you and me flock to on holiday weekends. What was it diver Carlos Munda said the other day?
"Every time I come out of the water I smell like a sewer."
Look at the land-use anarchy and why does it take Vice-Mayor Sarah Duterte to point out the obvious? What have the city's planning people being doing for the last couple of decades. Certainly not producing visions of the future.
Look at the city's public transport system. More anarchy. Who's got the courage to get up and shout stop, get rid of the jeepneys and let's build a modern and efficient rail or wheel-borne mass transit system ? Nobody that I can see.
Conclusions? Davao's long on rhetoric and short on action. And I don’t mean piddly little action like bike lanes (and how long is that little bit of business taking?). I mean bold strokes, laying down the law and making it happen.
I'll make a bet with you. That in ten years time, Davao's sea front squattervilles will still be there; that jeepneys will still hog the city's streets, that there'll be no new main thoroughfares and that I'll still be hollerin' "Tubiiiiiig!"

Covington: Blind as a...
ECREASE the tax on horse racing (Jess Quitain's item on Sunday), increase the tax on importing books (Jocy So's column on Friday) -- there's something seriously adrift with our present administration. The word "dysfunctional" comes to mind.
Moving on and Tuesday, referring to the massed ranks of road signs on the diversion road, City Adminstrator Wendel Avisado demanded, "Are Dabawenyos blind?"
Yes, Wendel. Take Dabawenyos crossing the highway who obviously cannot see the white-painted pedestrian crossings even though they're dodging through the traffic only a few yards away from a broad band of white stripes.
Take Dabawenyo drivers similarly blind to the "do not cross" single and double yellow lines painted down the middle of our highways.
Or take our Dabawenyo LTO who are blind to the teeming helmetless habal-habal drivers on the road wearing only flip-flops instead of sensible shoes -- maybe there's a habal-habal store somewhere selling Harry Potter-type camouflage cloaks guaranteed to render the user invisible to the law.
Sidewalk vendors on Magsaysay Avenue are buying these cloaks too -- their crates of slippers, underwear, and cell phones all but block the sidewalk but are invisible to our Dabawenyo city authorities.
Dabawenyos blind? I'd say so.
The Pantukan landslip now and much of last week I was watching TV news coverage of ravaged hillsides, and I'll admit I didn't know what I was looking at. Natural denudation? Slippage on a grand scale? It wasn't until Friday that I read that this mutilation of the Compostela Valley hillsides is the work of small-scale miners. They burrow into the hillside, toss their waste rock down the slope, and thus denude entire hillsides of vegetation.
Blindness again. Every week -- almost every other day -- I read items telling me how giant foreign mining companies are going to lay waste the country, items often written by NGOs who haven't a clue what they're talking about. And yet here is destruction on a massive scale right under our noses and by Filipino miners and with not a word of condemnation to be heard. Something is not right: maybe it's because these small miners don't have a website to crib notes from.
Lastly, news for anyone motoring to and from Mandug, Tigatto, and all points north -- the road people have decided to install large diameter culvert rings (and maybe widen the road) at the Buhangin end just past the elementary school and just in time for the opening of school next month. The usual utter chaos at the diversion road crossing and the Mandug/Cabantian Y-junction will henceforth be even worse, especially as the digger (Sunday) had shed a track. Bicycles rule!

Mixed reaction - I like the news but I kinda dislike it. I mean, in all properties in Davao, why convert an existing Durian farm into a subdivision? Isnt this a perfect example of brushing off the importance of a farm over commercialism?
Durian is one of the factors our city is famous for. Cant we conserve and protect these farms instead? And for developers, we have a very vast space in Davao, cant DMCI look for something else? Will DMCI preserve the farm at the same time? I believe not. I dont wanna see it in Davao one day what happened to some of the towns in Luzon wherein rice fields are converted into commercial buildings. Now they are experiencing the negative outcome of such move.
tj_brewed June 25th, 2009, 10:54 AM Hi Davz
,is this the whole City of Davao? Small but terrible and I hope the developers can build some high buildings, I wish!
That's not the entire Davao City..that's just the CM Recto and Chinatown area. Developers will only build a highrise if there's a demand in the market, unlike where you are right now in Canada, we dont have such strong demand yet in Davao City. As what my mayor said during the Asian Tourism Forum - we dont need to change our city to fit what the tourists wanted. We dont have skyscrapers (even I want to have one), so be it. Davao is still beautiful beyond those tall structures.
Small but terrible if we compare it to the likes of major global cities worldwide but the best planned and the most urban in the island of Mindanao!

In all of the upcoming investments in Davao City, I really hope, wish, and will pray that this will not be approved.
50 hectare Durian farm will be converted into just a subdivision? It's a big katangahan and abuse (sorry for those words). I met Leonora Gutierrez when I was in Davao June of last year. She's good as a licensed realtor and as a manager of DMCI but I just dont know if they are looking years ahead and foreseeing the outcome of such project (converting an existing durian farm into a subdivision).
I really pray that local environmentalists will catch this news and will do their best to stop this project.
Didnt they know the years invested to grow a durian tree and just like that we will cut these to pave way for a mere subdivision?
How many durian farms do we still have which are located within the city? Not those in del sur or del norte but those within the city like this one? That's why we're called as the city of durian coz of these. Kudos to Tagum City for protecting their Durian farms and instead of allowing capitalists to transform these into a subdivision, they are even planting more and expanding their farms. I think they deserve to be called as the real Durian City considering of such initiative of their local government. They even have a very colorful and alive Durian Festival.
Peng Hok June 25th, 2009, 11:07 AM ^^
Baka naman they would not entirely cut off all the durian trees. But strollers and durian trees (with fruits) could hardly co-exist. Sakit siguro madugpaan ug durian sa ulo samtang nag lakaw lakaw ka sa subdivision. Seriously, sana magawan nila ng paraan na hindi kailangan putulin ang mga puno. :)

dinabaw June 26th, 2009, 07:03 AM A Night of Compassion with the Himig Singers
Written by: Dakudao , Michael Angelo E.
Friday, 26 June 2009
THANKS to Kara Rabat-Francisco, I got information about the concert A Night of Compassion with the Himig Singers this June 27, Saturday, at 7:00 pm over at the Davao Christian High School Auditorium which will also feature maestra Nelly Domingo Castro’s Songspell. The Himig Singers’ concert is a fund raising project mounted by the Davao City Mt. Apo Lions Club for the benefit of “our less fortunate brothers and sisters living in the areas of Davao City, Panabo and Calinan for the organization’s Medical and Dental Missions including pediatric eye surgery operations this coming August.” According to Kara, the ever dependable President of the Songspell, this concert is a special project done in cooperation with the Maharlika Lions Club of Sacramento, USA.
The Davao City Mt. Apo Lions Club was established in 1971; and has contributed a great deal to Davao City in the building of traffic stands, waiting sheds, and basketball courts. More importantly, the organization awards scholarship grants to deserving students; and distributes rice and canned goods to such charitable institutions as Boys Town, School for the Blind plus its monthly feeding program in depressed communities. I am also grateful that the Davao City Mt. Apo Lions Club has been sponsoring cultural presentations since the past years.
Over the years that I have been to many musical concerts showcasing Davao’s very own talents, I have truly been impressed by the single-mindedness of the Himig Singers and their musical director, Alvin “Bong” Aviola, in achieving the highest standards. To music lovers, it may seem that Davaoeños who have not gone to any of the Himig Singers’ performances is akin to living in Davao and not having tasted the exotic Durian. Such towering icon has the Himig Singers become in Davao’s very own music arena. Davao, indeed, remains a fertile ground for music, as lush and as varied as the indigenous waling-walings which grow all over the place. It is music which is keeping the city alive where almost everyone can sing or dance.
It is no wonder then that a small group of college freshmen, who once belonged to a high school choir called the Singing Teens, decided to form a singing group in September, 1988, to continue their love for singing. The appointed leader was Rey Alan Lacuin, who has since moved to Vienna to pursue his career as classical singer and choir conductor; while Greg Canceran of the UCCP served as music director. The young members were contented with their “raket” in singing in parties, school affairs, and fiestas.
Professionalism and discipline, however, were introduced and inculcated in the minds of the carefree members when, in 1990, Greg Canceran handed over the directorship to Bong Aviola. The highly qualified Bong Aviola is a graduate of the University of the Philippines’ Music Conservatory and a protégé of Prof. Joel Navarro who is acknowledged as one of the finest conductors of the Philippines. Aviola also worked for years in maestro Ryan Cayabyab’s music studio teaching voice lessons.
The Himig Singers survived and learned to accept the directorship and dictatorship of Bong Aviola to produce music that is totally captivating. A whole new genre of music making was in full bloom in Davao City by then. The alluring music of the Himig Singers soon won recognition nationally and internationally. The Himig Singers traveled around the globe mesmerizing music aficionados with their own brand of exquisite and absolutely irresistible melodies from Filipino contemporary standards to Renaissance, Classical and Romantic Compositions. The Himig Singers and Bong Aviola have truly gone a long way through the years.
On the other hand, maestra Nelly Domingo Castro’s Songspell, which was formed in May, 1996, has been steadily doing its share in discovering, developing, enhancing and promoting the musical abilities of children; and has since provided excellent performances to various communities in the country as well as abroad. The Songspell is Davao’s finest children’s song and dance group, and to this day, remains unmatched in its polished, refined, cohesive, shimmering tones. And Maestra Nelly Domingo Castro’s commitment to music, to people, to cultural and spiritual values serves as inspiration to her colleagues, students and friends.
My special thanks to Kara Rabat-Francisco for graciously providing me the data and pictures. Please support our local artists by watching their performances.

Ibex June 26th, 2009, 03:33 PM Hi Davao forumers,
I have been doing some "backreading" but i guess i couldnt find some answers to my questions.
Ive stayed in Davao and studied at AdDU for a year (graduated at XU) but that was like 7 years ago and I never had a chance to tour Davao that time, so consider this my first time
not sasa wharf... maraming jump-off points ang samal depende kasi yan sa resort may kanya-kanya silang motorized banca to ferry you to and fro.. :) ok ang Paradise pero silang pool walang pool...

Davao City seeks traffic plan for big investments
by RG Alama
Davao City (27 June) -- The Davao City Council is now requiring big investments particularly mall developments to furnish them with a traffic management plan that will show how these establishment will handle traffic flow to and fro their premises.
City Councilor Pilar Braga said with new large investments in the city, they have incorporated into the requirements how these companies will handle and increase volume of traffic that they will be causing.
Speaking before members of the media at a press conference at Lorie' Café in this city, Braga bared that all new developments regardless of size as long would submit a traffic plan. These are part of the requirements which will be submitted to the City Council prior to approval of the said project. These requirements were enacted January of this year.
Bibiano Alcuizar, Traffic Management Center chief said the plan is technically-called Traffic Impact or Assessment or TIA. These plans will help them map out new traffic strategies particularly since there are new commercial developments sprouting in the city like malls, planned residential communities and IT parks.
Braga said that she is worried that major city's thoroughfares would be clogged by traffic with massive developments; one of these major road arteries is J.P Laurel Avenue where many of the City's big malls are located. Ongoing construction is Abreeza, a P4 to P5-billion mix-used retail and office complex being built by Ayala Land.
SM Prime Holdings has also bought the sprawling 10-hectare Lanang Golf and Country club, also located along JP Laurel Avenue ; the land will be for a planned second SM mall, this time in the northern side of Davao City. (PIA XI) [top]

Are you planning to visit the Pearl of the Orient, the Philippines and yet you do not have any idea on where to go? Are you sick and tired of seeing frowning people in the busy streets of the usual city setting? Well, I will bet that Davao City is the best place for you!
Sweet fruits, great beaches, hospitable people - these are the words that best describe one of the most magnificent place in the Philippines, Davao City!
This beautiful city is one of the top tourist spot that the Philippines is proud of having. This place is bestowed with wonderful lands and waters that lures and tempts many tourists from and outside the Philippines.
Aside from that, the city has a wonderful history that adds in its magnificence! Originally, the term Davao means fire. It is from the word "daba-daba." Interesting festivals marked the place. One of the most anticipated and well attended festivals in this city is the well known Dinagyang Festival. Aside from that, many other rituals are done in this place that highlights the gracious past and culture of the people.
Davao City is bestowed by different tourist attractions that really lure many visitors from and even outside the Philippines.
Among the historical tourist attraction, the Shrine of the Holy Infant Jesus of Prague is one of the must see. It is located in Matina, Davao City. This is an open air chapel that features the replica of the Holy Infant Jesus of Prague and Our Lady of Fatima. Aside from the relics, the wonderful panoramic view of the coconut plantation and other fruit bearing trees adds in the magnificence of the city.
About 9 to 15 kilometers from the city cradles a shrine for the veterans of war - the Japanese Peace Memorial Shrine/ Cemetery. Even though that there is the term Japanese in the name, the cemetery is open to all sorts of races.
Your trip to this city will not be complete if you will never get the chance to see and know the people of the place. Go and visit Davao Museum so you will surely have the chance to witness the culture and traditions of the city and of course the people.
Davao City is also known for the beautiful hand woven cloth and actually you can have a glance on this at the T'Boli Weaving Center. The T'Boli Weaving Center is located at the Insular Hotel Grounds, Insular Hotel, Lanang, Davao City. Your visit in the said place will be highlighted by the demonstration of the tribal women of South Cotabato of the traditional craftsmanship and art of the T'Boli Tribe. See how they weave and turn the native abaca into fibers. Witness how the strips turned into canvass of artistry by designing figures with the intricate of patterns.
Davao is not just a place gifted with great people but also it is gifted with splendid water. You can spend your time around the different beaches, which offer best summer activities. Dive and snorkel around its clear waters! One of the must see is the Muslim Fishing Village located at San Jose, Samal Island. In the said place, children can dive overboard while the adults will be busy side seeing over the magnificent view from the native huts built over the waters.
Last but not the least, your stay at the city will not be totally complete without bringing home the ever delicious durian fruit.
Davao City is filled with beautiful sceneries and tourist attractions and of course with beautiful people with the heart of gold! Smiles will surely be a souvenir for any visitor or tourist who will spend time in beautiful Davao!

oradude23 June 28th, 2009, 05:24 AM ICTSI-RP golf tour resumes at Apo
Local pros come out of a two-month break to resume their hunt for golfing supremacy as the ICTSI-Philippine Golf Tour stages the Apo Golf Invitational on July 1-3 at the Apo Golf and Country Club in Davao City.
Marvin Dumandan defeated fellow Davaoeno Elmer Salvador by two strokes at Apo late last year when ICTSI, also the chief backer of junior and amateur golf the last five years, staged a three-leg tour as a prelude to this year's pro circuit.
Dumandan went on to post a 1-2 finish in the first two legs of the 2009 tour, including a victory at ICTSI-Eagle Ridge last April, making him the player to watch in the upcoming 54-hole tournament.
But to score a repeat at Apo, the power-hitting Dumandan will have to contend with a crack field bolstered by the presence of Asian Tour regulars Juvic Pagunsan, Artemio Murakami, Tony Lascuna and Mars Pucay, making the chase for the top P200,000 wide open.
“Those with Asian Tour cards should be the favorites here," said Dumandan, referring to Pagunsan and company who are on a mid-season break from the Asian Tour.
Still, Dumandan remains upbeat of his chances in the P1 million event serving as the third leg of a 10-stage circuit sponsored by sponsored by ICTSI (International Container Terminal Services, Inc.) and backed by MJ Carr Golf.
Meanwhile, a pro-am tournament will be held June 30 featuring a select cast of pros plus top officials of ICTSI and Apo and guests from Pisanti, The Country Club, Srixon, FAMI, Business Mirror, Motorola, Omnisource and Pepsico.

Dakpa ang akong tiil June 28th, 2009, 02:05 PM Gov't expects increased UK tourists in Mindanao this year
ABS-CBNNEWS.COM
The Department of Tourism (DOT) expect more tourist arrivals in Mindanao as the British government recently lifted travel restrictions to certain parts of the south.
Tourism Secretary Ace Durano said the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has now allowed its citizens to travel to Davao and Caraga regions (northeastern part of Mindanao) after a two-year restriction. This, he said, will generate more revenues to local communities.
"Amendments will encourage tourists from the UK to experience nature, adventure, and culture that the island of Mindanao has to offer," Durano said in a statement. Some of Mindanao's popular tourist destinations include Siargao, Butuan, Pearl Farm, Mt. Apo, and Compostela Valley.
"This development signals growth in travel brought about by the strong security measures now being implemented in the area. The best thing about this is that the local communities will directly benefit, with an additional demand to meet," he added.
According to the DOT's research and statistics division, British tourists account for the biggest number of European tourists to the Philippines. DOT said that last year, some 87,422 UK tourists arrived in the country, reflecting 2.78 percent of the total traffic for 2008.
The British FCO earlier advised its citizens not to travel to any part of Mindanao due to "terrorist and insurgent activity." However, the DOT said that the political climate in the region has already changed, making travel to these areas "safe and particularly rewarding."
"It is indeed a welcome respite from the present events that have seemed to be unfair to the tourism industry lately," said DOT Undersecretary for tourism planning and promotions Eduardo Jarque Jr, adding that this will encourage stronger ties with other government agencies.
The DOT reported 1.3 million tourist arrivals in the country for the first three months of the year, a 10.3-percent rise from the figure recorded in the same period last year, indicating another banner year for the tourism industry.
Durano said over 1,230 hotel and resort rooms worth P8 billion were opened early this year, and another 2,315 would be built by year-end. These are part of the P550-billion expansion projects of various investors involving some 7,000 new hotel and resort rooms.
The department said it is expecting the tourism sector to create more jobs for Filipinos this year, helping the country recover from the economic crisis.

Road show starts for BPO ‘next-wave cities’
CEBU CITY — The Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT) kicks off here today Convergence 2009, signifying the government’s commitment to spur development in the so-called "next wave cities" for outsourcing.
Convergence 2009 combines the Cyber Corridor Roadshow and the Business Processing Association of the Philippines’ (BPA/P) Talent Caravan.
CICT Secretary Ray Anthony Roxas-Chua III said the event will kick off at the CICT today and make stops at Sta. Rosa, Laguna; Trece Martires, Cavite; Iloilo; Davao; Bacolod; Malolos, Bulacan; Clark, Pampanga; Cagayan de Oro; Lipa; and Cebu.
Cities and municipalities in areas composing Metro Laguna and Metro Cavite have been judged the best next wave cities for outsourcing outside of Metro Manila and Metro Cebu. These are Santa Rosa City, Calamba City, Los Baños, Cabuyao and San Pablo City in Metro Laguna for the top spot, as well as Dasmariñas, Bacoor, Imus, and Cavite City in Metro Cavite for the second place.
Ranking third to 10th place are: Iloilo City, Davao City, Bacolod City, Angeles-Clark-Mabalacat, Baliuag-Marilao-Meycauyan, Cagayan de Oro, Malolos-Calumpit, and Lipa City.
Factors considered were ready availability of talent, infrastructure, cost, and ease of doing business.
Convergence 2009 also serves as the culminating activity of the National ICT Month celebration. — Marites S. Villamor

HAVE you ever noticed the fast and exciting changes happening around you lately? Yes, it’s fast and, yes, they’re all here…businesses, shopping malls, call centers…and the list could go on and on. But what do they all have in common?
JOBS, that’s what!
Let us begin with the basics. They say it takes a lot of sacrifice and hard work to land a good job these days. The latter may be true but to sacrifice need not necessarily be the case. Why go to Manila or even to Cebu to work in a call center when you already have more than ten in Davao to choose from? What happens now is that you have to see things the way conglomerates see them…invest here, and invest in your own person.
Personal investment, this is the more traditional term for what we call an “upgrade” nowadays. That is, increasing your market value and improving your credentials. This does not only apply to fresh graduates but also to professionals who may be deciding on a promotion, a career shift or even just for personal progress.
Businesses which have managed to thrive despite the apparent economic turmoil have done so because they have diversified their approach and made intelligent decisions that made their companies stronger and even more in demand to the public. And since the investors have this much belief and confidence in the talent pool of Davao and Mindanao, it should only be right for the “gold” in the “goldmine” to meet them halfway. One example is a company which has chosen not Manila, not Cebu, but Davao City to invest in and open a training facility that will give Mindanaoans an opportunity to experience outstanding and unparalleled service.
Synnex-Concentrix Corporation recently opened its training center in Davao called Concentrix Institute (CXI). This newly opened facility at the Damosa IT Park, Lanang is the newest division of Concentrix Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of SYNNEX Corporation a Fortune 500 company and leading business process service provider in the world.
Concentrix Institute aims to deliver quality branded and value-added education, workshops, skills training and seminars via its Center for the English Language, Center for Technical Knowledge and Development and Center for Leadership and Management. Learning is their advocacy and dream for anyone and everyone interested to gain personal and career empowerment that will enable the common job-seeker to compete in the national and global markets.
Concentrix Institute also serves as the community’s vital link to knowledge outsourcing through its provision of an affordable and convenient alternative venue and source for management workshops and seminars that are normally held in Manila or overseas that does not sacrifice the quality and professionalism of the material delivery, facility preparedness and availability of qualified speakers and facilitators.
Visitors are also taken on a tour of its new, modern facilities and state of the art amenities. You may reach Concentrix Institute via their direct line at 235-5097 to 99, mobile number 0908.880.9056 or email your inquiries to ci_info@concentrix.com This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. THE global financial crisis has made investments harder to come by, but Davao City is expected to become more competitive in the global business arena as it forges sisterhood agreements with different cities from different countries worldwide. Davao City has existing sisterhood agreements with San Juan in Manila and with Nanning in China. It is also set to renew its sisterhood agreements with the cities of Manado and Bitung in Indonesia.
“The forging of sisterhood agreements between Davao City and other cities benefit us economically because it brings in tourists as well as business investments to the city,” vice mayor Sara Duterte said. The sisterhood pacts require exchange visits between the officials of the two cities involved, and in most cases there are investors who come along for possible business opportunities here, she said.
Councilor Rachel Zozobrado, chair of the City Council’s committee on international relations, said the city is eyeing sisterhood pacts with Mersin City in Turkey as well as Darwin City in Australia. The planned sisterhood between Davao and Darwin will, however, not only focus on economic ties between the two cities but will also pave the way for cultural promotion between them.
“The sisterhood agreement will not only develop economic ties between the two cities, but will also push for cultural ties between them, especially with the proposal to teach Filipino in their schools,” Zozobrado said. Her office is presently coordinating with former Philippine Ambassador Bahnarim Guinomla (now the head of the Department of Foreign Affairs in Mindanao) to fasttrack the sisterhood pact.
The latest to signify its intention to forge a sisterhood agreement with Davao City is Uijeongbu in Korea. This time though, it’s the other way around since a lot of Korean investors are already in the city’s business districts, particularly along Uyanguren street.
A delegation of 16 from Uijeongbu City in South Korea headed by Mayor Kim Moon Won was in the city during the third week of June 2009 to sign a Letter of Intent with Mayor Rodrigo Duterte in preparation for the signing later on of a sisterhood agreement between the two cities.
“The Korean fever has caught the city in the form of Korean products and hairstyles and we are pleased to forge this relationship with the people of Uijeongbu,” Duterte said. Mayor Kim Moon Won said they are eyeing cooperation with Davao in various fields, including the economy, sports, tourism, health and culture. [Lovely A. Carillo]

THE development of Camella Northpoint, the condominium community being developed by
Camella Communities, boosts Davao’s position as one of the most viable cities for business and tourism, by providing an ideal and unique residential location in the heart of the city’s business and shopping district.
“The development of Camella Northpoint is an affirmation that Davao City is, indeed, the most competitive city to do business in the Philippines. The fact that it is the first condominium development undertaken by Camella Communities outside of Metro Manila says a lot about the company’s faith in Davao and Mindanao,” remarked Patricia Melliza B. Ruivivar, Chief of Staff of the City Mayor’s Office and OIC Director of the Museo Dabawenyo, upon seeing the ongoing development at the project site.
Davao as a growth area has been unprecedented, with the flow of more investments into the region and the consequent rise of modern business locations for growing industries. With the influx of more economic players and shakers into the city also comes the demand for modern and convenient residential locations. Camella Communities has stepped up to the plate by developing its modern condominium community, Camella Northpoint, at the junction of J.P. Laurel Avenue and Buhangin Road. Camella Northpoint’s development has created an exciting buzz in the real estate market because of its unique proposition as a modern condominium community that fits right in the city’s growth area, but unmatched by any other condo project with its unique blend of modern urban living and the refreshing charm of nature.
City Tourism Officer Bong Aportadera noted that Camella Northpoint’s location and new concept of urban living is a boost to Davao’s reputation as a tourism and business destination.
“Camella Northpoint has an interesting character not only as the first pine estate in the city, but also because of its historic past. The white mansion they have preserved as a key feature in their development is an iconic structure in Davao and has stood sentinel to the city’s development over the decades,” he said. He added that Camella would do well to play up this historic factor and incorporate Davao’s distinct charm and identity into their development.
“This is a pioneering project for the north side of the city, making Camella Communities a trailblazer. We look forward to a long and meaningful partnership with Camella in providing shelter for Dabawenyos and in building our diverse communities, ensuring that Davao remains one of the top most livable cities in Asia,” added Ms. Ruivivar.

AMID the rise of condominium projects in the city, one development shines above the rest with its new concept of urban living not found in any other condo project in the city.
Camella Northpoint is a condominium community that is clearly a cut above the rest with its seamless blend of modern urban living and the refreshing bounty of nature.
Touted as the first Pine Estate in Davao, Camella Northpoint is situated in an already lush location with age-old acacia trees and other verdant plant life. The developer, Camella Communities, brings the notch even higher by planting imported Caribbean pine trees that are now seen growing robustly around the property.
“While other condominiums are merely stand-alone concrete structures, Camella Northpoint is ensconced within a refreshing natural environment teeming with plant life, fresh air, and an oasis-like ambiance,” said Marlon Escalicas, general manager of Camella Communities Davao.
Camella Northpoint will rise right at the heart of the economic hub in north Davao, where the major city locators are found, such as the international airport, seaport, large manufacturing companies, and business centers such as IT parks and modern office buildings catering to the BPO industry.
It is also a stone’s throw away from urban commercial areas and high-end retail and shopping centers such as Abreeza which is currently under construction, the reported development of another big mall in Lanang, the new Robinson’s Cybergate and supermarket, along with other popular commercial, dining, entertainment, and shopping centers such as Damosa Gateway, Damosa Business Center, Victoria Plaza and Gaisano Mall.
“Camella Northpoint is in a very prime location which is very convenient for urban living. The condo is also a good investment,” remarked businessman Erwin Tan of Kasuotan.
“Most other condo projects in the city boast of locating somewhere within the business district, but Camella Northpoint is situated at the most vantage location,” said Escalicas, adding that its prime location and verdant natural surroundings is a proposition unmatched by any other condo development in the city.
Camella Communities welcomes inquiries about Camella Northpoint at their office at Karpentrade Building, or at telephone numbers 298-0387 and 298-0300.

City intensifies inspection of business establishments
Sunday, 28 June 2009 13:26
PDF
THE city government, in its effort to curb criminality as well as raise standards of tourism-related establishments, has started inspecting the establishments in tourism zones.
Rizal Giovanni P. Aportadera Jr., city tourism officer, justified that the inspection is not meant to just close down establishments immediately but a way to help them to improve their establishments.
But if those found violating city and national laws would not mend their ways, Aportadera said the city government will not hesitate to padlock them.
“We want to be proactive,” he said, explaining that the city government would give the erring establishments time to correct their mistakes, among them failing to comply with the local ordinances on health, anti-smoking and the use of gadgets that emitted high volume of noise.
Another problem, Aportadera said, was that there were petty crimes reported last year at the Prime Square, a stretch in what is considered as an entertainment zone as it is the primary location of restaurants, bars coffee shop. The area is the primary target for inspection because of reported violations.
He explained that the Business Bureau has even closed down two establishments, one of them was even owned by a government official who he did not identify.
Aportadera, however, pointed out that the city government was not only after the area but its inspection started there because of the complaints. He added all other establishments including hotels will also be inspected.
The problem with some of the establishments is that even when the city government already sent them notice of violations, they ignored the complaints even when some owners were his friends.
Although he said that it is the right of the city government to run after violators, Simeon P. Marfori II, president of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said consultations must be done before any drastic action is taken.
Marfori pointed out that the city government should consider that businesses require capital and that the atmosphere should be that “business can thrive.” He explained that enforcement of the law should always be on a regular basis so that the stability of the business should not get affected.
He added that the city government should not immediately close down businesses found to be violating some ordinances because these are the ones who help the economy move especially on dire times.
Gene C. Bangayan, president of the Davao Tourism Association, welcomed the move of the city government. However, Bangayan said the city government and the tourism sector should discuss issues that are necessary in upgrading the tourism industry and that policies must also be the result of these discussions.

- International exhibit set on September
A GROUP of top South Korean businessmen have strongly suggested that Davao exporters of bananas, pineapples and wood panels use the port city of Incheon as entry point, instead of just Busan, also a port city of South Korea for a number of advantages.
The visiting businessmen were in Davao City a week ago to promote the Incheon International Logistics and Materials Handling Exhibition 2009 in the city of Incheon, South Korea, September 8-11. As the name suggests, the four-day fair will feature companies that are into logistics and materials handling and organizers want to feature their port which is being prepared for the event.
The event will be held in the Songdo ConvenSia, a 52.5-hectare convention center with state-of-the art facilities, located in the heart of Incheon Free Economic Zone.
According to Joe Suhyun, deputy general manager of the exhibit team, Davao City-based exporters of banana, pineapple and wood panels are using Busan, formerly Pusan, the nearest point to Japan, in entering the Seoul market even though Incheon, a city which has a population of 2.8 in population, is nearer.
Suhyun explain to Davao City officials headed by City investment promotion officer Bobby Teo, private businessmen led by Paquibato I. Valderrama of Infly Phils Traders Co., Inc., and media practitioners during a presentation of the coming exhibition’s features, the advantages of using Incheon as entry point of Davao exports in comparison with Busan.
Busan, also a metropolitan city with about 3.65 million people, is considered the one of the biggest ports of the world. Mr. Suhyun said exporters consider Busan because the infection facilities for imported products are better.
Organizers have set aside about $300 million for the event with the plan of allowing some Davao City-based companies to join even for free as they want also to showcase its port and its facilities for inspection.
By using the Incheon port, exporters will have an easier access to the Seoul market because the city is nearer to the South Korean capital of about 25 million in population. Because of the proximity of Incheon to the main market, Mr. Suhyun said exporters will be able to save at least $400 in transportation cost for every 20-footer container van as they are charged about $700 per van if they dock in Busan.
Aside from the money saved, he said, exporters will also be able to save time considering the proximity of Incheon to the main market.
The information and communications technology sector of Davao City has also signified its intention to join the event. Erriberto P. Barriga Jr., vice president of the sector umbrella group ICT Davao, asked the organizers whether his group can join the event for free.
Barriga pointed out that his group is keen on looking how Davao City-based companies can partner with those in Incheon.
Suhyun advised Barriga’s group to send a formal request to the organizers so that they could consider it.
Suhyun also pointed out that the event will also have a global fair component and that Davao City-based companies can even showcase their products as about 70 million visitors from around the world are expected to see the fair.

Dakpa ang akong tiil June 29th, 2009, 04:17 PM Filling a hole in coffee shop business

EVEN as a seven-year-old child, Gladys Lalaine G. Marcial, now 28, was a budding entrepreneur, selling candies to drivers working for her grandfather's trucking firm.
Being the only girl in a family of five siblings, Gel would play "tinda-tindahan" alone inside her room. The dresser would serve as her store counter. She would position herself in front of the mirror and assume that her reflection on the mirror is the customer.
She had long asked for a cash register toy from her parents, but the latter couldn't find one for their unica hija. So she used the dresser's drawer to keep her play money.
Her business sense prompted her to take a financial management course at the Colegio de San Benildo in Cagayan de Oro. Immediately after her graduation in 2002, she moved back to Davao City to work at her lolo's trucking firm and at the same time managed a water-refilling station. The line of business didn't fascinate her much though.
While fixing her cabinet to get rid of old clothes, she stumbled upon the idea of selling the second-hand clothes to earn extra money.
"Nakita ko closet ko na masyado ng maraming gamit. Naisip ko na pwede ko pagkakitaan. Instead of buying things for myself. Bumili ako ng pangbenta," she narrated.
Her entrepreneurial ambitions got the best of her, and eventually landed her a marketing career by selling boutique items from RTWs (ready to wears) to bags, shoes, and ladies accessories. She joined bazaars during Kadayawan, Araw ng Dabaw, Christmas and the like at Davcon, Matina Town Square and Damosa Gateway.
She pioneered the distribution of popular Crocs brand footwear in Davao.
She discovered customers' interest in clothes and accessories and this sparked her curiosity. In 2005, Gel opened Clothes Bar in Juna Subdivision.
"It was financially rewarding. Enough to pay the rent of boutique and house, at mapakain apat na brothers ko, makapagtravel, at ma afford na hindi mag-work for one month,” she said.
Though not so tech-savvy, Gel took advantage of opportunities by bringing Clothes Bar to the doorsteps of online clients.
But then again the self-starting side of Gel dreamed of bigger things.
While manning her booth at the 1st Food Exhibit at Central Bank in 2007, she stumbled upon a new business idea -- food and beverage.
"Nagtatiangge ako noon sa central bank, nakita ako ng lola ko na nagsusukat ng shoes para sa ibang tao. My lola told my lolo na 'yung apo mo nagtatiangge'. My lolo asked my lola to tell me na pumili daw ako kahit ano business at siya ang magpi-finance," Gel said. "Nung time na yun I wanted a mall-based boutique. My lolo was not amenable to it and suggested that I diversify into food and beverage retailing. Akala ko biro-biro lang. My lolo bought me an espresso machine worth P240,000," she said.
With her newly delivered espresso machine at her boutique, Gel made her own coffee menu and coffee shop concept, which she formulated from the internet and friends' suggestions.
"I even set up an online show on Blog TV to elicit suggestions and feedback. My audience was from different places,” she said.
She attended trainings on coffee concoctions. Her first coffee customers at the boutique cum snack bar were her Lola Lydia Guilles, friends and several curious foreigners who drop by to check out her goods.
Gel then found a new business -- a coffee shop gifted by her lolo, Gregorio "Totoy" Guilles.
With plenty of ideas on how to start up and grow her business, Gel established Tata Benito’s (named after her great grandfather) A Whole Latte Love at World Palace in November 2007.
Business wasn’t good enough though because of its not so strategic location. Gel decided to transfer the coffee shop and bring her products to more potential customers.
In December 2008, she opened Tata Benito’s at the Paseo de Legaspi on Legaspi Street which also houses Clothes Bar at the second floor.
For Gel, most start-ups just don't take off. However, this eventuality shouldn't be confused with failure. She gained a new raft of experiences and learned valuable lessons for future enterprising. Her aunt, Dr. Lucy Guilles, franchised Tata Benito’s and opened a branch near Conpinco in Bajada.
Just five months after opening Tata Benito’s Rizal branch, Gel expanded her coffee shop business to the Robinson’s Cybergate along J. P. Laurel Avenue. She admitted it was an aggressive move but she said that getting Robinsons Land’s approval of her lease application only proves that Tata Benito’s has been slowly making a name in the local coffee shop industry.
“We see to it that everything is personalized from menu to services. Every client who comes to the coffee shop ay parang bisita sa bahay,” she said.
Slowly, Gel believes, customers have taken notice that Tata Benito’s is filling a hole in the market with quality product, offering about 40 coffee concoctions.
“We roast our own coffee. Every cup of coffee served came from coffee beans roasted by my lolo, not by charcoal but through pressurized method,” Gel said, adding that Tata Benito’s has its own commissary that bakes its own bread and pastries.
Success doesn’t come easy though. “Madali man ang operation pero ang problema ay ang tao. Mas maraming needs ang employees kesa sa shop. Kung kaya ko ibigay, ibibigay ko… just like how you treat a family member,” she said.
Young entrepreneurs like Gel can always use their youth to their advantage by introducing something new and creative into the market. She laments though that a downside of starting young in any business is you don’t get to enjoy your youth.
"Gusto mo mag-explore ng ibang field or mag travel but you're stuck with the business. Hindi din pwede iwanan ng matagal ang business because it would be just like leaving your baby to a yaya. Halos hindi ako makatulog," Gel added.
With her passion as a driving force, Gel hopes to establish a solid hold.
Such that when people hear the name coffee, one of the things that would come to mind is Tata Benito's. Establishing Tata Benito's name, she added, comes with an unending pursuit of ways to surprise its clients.
In the event business doesn't take off soon, she said it helps to be patient. Just don't end up pulling out of it; look back on what you've learned and consider what you plan to do next time -- wiser and ready to deal with new challenges.
"There's always another opportunity; dust yourself off and keep on going. You haven't failed but you've progressed."

Davao to require property developers to submit traffic plan
DAVAO CITY — City legislators will require property investors to submit a traffic management plan for their projects, as more development and vehicles put a strain on the city’s narrow streets.
Councilor Pilar Braga, committee on transportation chairman, cited the need for this requirement since there is no expansion of the two- to four-lane streets in the central business district. Ms. Braga cited the J.P. Laurel Avenue, which now has four shopping complexes, namely: Gaisano City Mall, Robinsons Cybergate, Damosa Gateway, and Victoria Plaza. Two more malls are set to rise along the same stretch of road: the Ayala Group’s Abreeza project and the 10-hectare SM City Davao North at the old Lanang Golf and Country Club.
Data from the regional Land Transportation Office showed the city’s number of vehicles has been growing at over 20% annually, now approaching about 300,000.
Bibiano Alcuizar, Traffic Management Center chief, noted widespread construction of new buildings, apart from subdivisions, malls, and IT parks.
Mindanao Business Council chairman Vicente T. Lao said Davao City is ready for a light transport system similar to that of Metro Manila to encourage car owners to commute, both to save cost and to mitigate the traffic in the downtown area.
University of the Philippines professor Roberto P. Alabado III said use of the narrow streets of the city could still be optimized with proper planning.
The city government, he said, can replicate what Curitiba City in Brazil is doing — designating specific roads exclusively for public buses that would run according to a schedule. — J. B. Escovilla

Wednesday, July 1, 2009
THE Mindanao Travel and Tour Expo (MTTE) will be moving out of its original home this year, which had been held at SM City Davao in the past three years.
Araceli Ayuste of the Davao Region Tourism Council, one of the organizers of the event, said the move to change the exhibit venue came about due to logistics concern.
"Because when it was in the mall, we had to wait for the store to close before we can conduct our ingress, and there is more accessibility at the new venue," Ayuste said.
For this year, MTTE will be staged at the Davao Convention and Trade Center.
"At the new venue, the moment you get off the vehicle, it is already the exhibit area. There is no need to move your exhibit materials up and down the stairs," Ayuste said.
Apart from the indoor exhibit, the MTTE this year will showcase an outdoor interactive adventure exhibit, which includes a zipline, miniature version of the newly opened theme park, the "Fantasy Land of Dapitan," and other exciting adventure activities in Mindanao.
"For the outdoor exhibit, the grounds of Davcon will also be used," Ayuste said. (CPM)

Organized by the private sector and the Department of Tourism (DOT), the tourism highway map will finally be unveiled after several years of planning.
"This will be the most comprehensive tourism highway map of Mindanao, complete with the information that a traveler needs on a trip," Araceli Ayuste, of the Davao Region Tourism Council, told reporters in a business forum Tuesday.
The tourism highway map on Mindanao will cover dive sites, tourism destinations, transportation, and routes.
"It involves all regions of Mindanao, from Region 9 [Western Mindanao] all the way to the Armm," Ayuste said.
Although Davao City remains to be the gateway of Mindanao, the map will also show other entry points on the island, such as Camiguin, Cagayan de Oro City, Ozamiz, General Santos City, and Zamboanga City.
"The map will give you answers on where to go, what to see, and how to get there," Ayuste said. "What we really want to promote is connectivity among destinations in Mindanao."
The tourism highway map is a collaboration of the various regional tourism councils in Mindanao, the different DOT regional offices and the local government units.
"With the map, we can keep the tourists interested, and have them extend their stay here," Ayuste said.

SEVEN young booters from the Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) -- five from grade school and two from high school -- have been invited to play in Europe for a series of football tournaments from July 3 to 25, including the prestigious Gothia Youth World Cup.
Getting the chance of a lifetime to play against the best young athletes in the world and in a much bigger soccer stage are Mica Isabel Corrales, Darius Joseph Diamante, Miguel Aquino, Joshua James Valdez and Javier Romero-Salas from grade school, and Gabriel Manolo Jamiana and Natasha Doromal from the secondary class.

Among the seven Ateneo booters, only Valdez is a veteran of the Europe event, having competed in last year's edition where he joined 11 other players from the school.
Valdez and the rest will form part of the Makati Football Club which will represent the Philippines in the European journey.
Aside from the Gothia Cup, which will be staged in Sweden, the touring Filipino booters will also see action in the Denmark Football Festival in Denmark and Costa Blanca Cup in Spain.
All the Ateneo players attended the summer camp training both in Makati and Alabang last May in preparation for the tournament which culminated in the Alaska summer camp tournament in Ayala, Alabang on May 17.
Corrales' team emerged champion as well as that of Diamante, who was named Most Valuable Player for his category.
The team of Valdez and Romero-Salas also garnered medals in their respective age categories.
The Davao boys were part of the Davao Region athletes who competed in the Palarong Pambansa in Tacloban City last May, while Corrales is a member of the back-to-back championship team of AdDU ladies soccer team in the Alaska Cup as well as back- to-back champions in the Del Monte Cup in Bukidnon.
The kids are not only sports-minded as they also excel in their studies and are consistent honor students.
"They see the experience in going to Europe as a way to broaden their perspective in life as well as to meet new friends of different nationalities who, like them, have a passion for football," said Marissa Grace Corrales, mother of Mica.

Description
Apo Golf & Country Club is a beautiful course that can be played at any time of the year. On most of the holes the greens are huge and flat, with well-maintained sand traps. The course includes plenty of water hazards, and there are also numerous mahogany and coconut trees to add to the challenge. Watch out for stunning views of Mount Apo, which can be seen from various vantage points (including the tee-off on the 10th hole).
