Pancake House to open 32 new stores; sees 10% sales increase

CASUAL DINING restaurant Pancake House, Inc. is banking on election spending during the second half of the year to boost sales by a tenth after a slow first quarter. The company is also allotting a higher budget in preparation for next year, with plans to open a culinary school.

"For the first quarter, we were trying to assess [the economic downturn]. January was good but we saw a slowdown in February. The second quarter improved but the rainy season and the [delayed] school year opening [tempered it]. For the whole year, assuming there is an election, we expect sales to increase by 10% to 15%," Martin P. Lorenzo, Pancake House chairman and chief executive officer, said at the sidelines of the company’s stockholders’ meeting yesterday.

But Mr. Lorenzo said the worst-case scenario is zero to 5% growth even if 32 new stores will open this year, as the expansion won’t likely be reflected in financial statements until next year.

Profits of Pancake House declined by 20.8% to P50.2 million last year, while revenues went up by 15.2% to P1.85 billion in 2008.

Net income continued to slip by 25% to P10.46 million from January to March because of lower restaurant sales. Revenues fell by 4.7% to P436.62 million during the period.

This year, the company is boosting its budget to P150 million, up from last year’s P100 million. Of the amount, P100 million will be allotted to 32 stores that will be opened; P30 million to P40 million for the upgrading of commissaries; and the remaining amount for the head office.

Mr. Lorenzo said the 32 new stores include those of newly acquired bakery chain Le Coeur de France, Sizzlin’ Pepper Steak, and Pancake House. The company is going to change its strategy on Chinese restaurant Singkit.

"It is hard to tap the middle market for Chinese cuisines. We might close one outlet and the remaining three will just be delivery outlets servicing Alabang, Makati, Parańaque, among others, just to maintain our revenues," Mr. Lorenzo said.

Pancake House also owns Dencio’s Bar and Grill, Kabisera ng Dencios, and Japanese restaurant Teriyaki Boy. The listed firm closed March with a total of 160 stores.

"We are also going to open our first branch of Pancake House in Boracay this month and we have partnered with the [SM mall] group to open a Pancake House in their new budget hotel SM Casa," Mr. Lorenzo said.

There are still plans to expand overseas, with three more Pancake House branches expected to open in Malaysia this year, bringing the number of outlets in that country to five. The plan for the first Teriyaki Boy branch in Vietnam, however, was put on hold because of the slowdown.

"The company will look into the region first. We might have Pancake Houses in Indonesia and Thailand [in the near future]," Mr. Lorenzo said.

Mr. Lorenzo also said Pancake House will open in January a culinary school in Pasong Tamo, Makati that will offer short courses of three months to two years. The school, to be known as the Institute of Culinary Arts and Food Service, will have a capacity of 200 to 250 students. "In the next three years, we will open two more schools in Cebu City and Davao City," Mr. Lorenzo said.

Shares in the company stayed at P10 apiece yesterday. — Kristine Jane R. Liu

Mindanao travel, tour expo moves to Davcon

THE Mindanao Travel and Tour Expo (MTTE) will be moving out of its original home this year, which had been held at SM City Davao in the past three years.

Araceli Ayuste of the Davao Region Tourism Council, one of the organizers of the event, said the move to change the exhibit venue came about due to logistics concern.

"Because when it was in the mall, we had to wait for the store to close before we can conduct our ingress, and there is more accessibility at the new venue," Ayuste said.

For this year, MTTE will be staged at the Davao Convention and Trade Center.

"At the new venue, the moment you get off the vehicle, it is already the exhibit area. There is no need to move your exhibit materials up and down the stairs," Ayuste said.

Apart from the indoor exhibit, the MTTE this year will showcase an outdoor interactive adventure exhibit, which includes a zipline, miniature version of the newly opened theme park, the "Fantasy Land of Dapitan," and other exciting adventure activities in Mindanao.

"For the outdoor exhibit, the grounds of Davcon will also be used," Ayuste said. (CPM)

Designer shoes come to DC
Monday, 08 June 2009 01:32

http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/3237/sixpacklogo.jpg (http://img6.imageshack.us/i/sixpacklogo.jpg/)

IN 1998, A GROUP OF artists influenced by graffiti culture, the Wu-Tang Clan and Aphex Twin formed a collective that would come to be known as SIXPACK FRANCE. Sixpack started as a small shop and has grown into a highly regarded fashion brand well-known the world over for it’s creative and challenging designs. The brand is known for their strong graphics and especially their tight knit artist network.
Together with DC, Sixpack & the French designer Akroe have created the NON MERCI line, composed of a stylish new high top sneaker and a matching reversible jacket. The shoes come with a grit all-over design and an exciting design on the sole, which is replicated on the lining of the reversible jacket.
Ask the store associates for a better look at the fruits of this fantastic collaboration now, and make sure to check out the amazing sole!
DC takes the lead in design and collaboration by also signing up skateboard photographer, MIKE BLABAC.
MIKE BLABAC is one of the preeminent skateboard photographers of his generation. Mike started shooting photos in the late ‘80s and has been DC’s skate photographer for 10 years. In 1999, Mike joined DC Shoes, Inc., where he still works today as director of skateboarding photography, a job that has taken him around globe and allowed him to shoot some of the greatest skaters today, including Danny Way, Rob Dyrdek, and Josh Kalis. His skateboarding images have appeared in numerous publications including Sports Illustrated, ESPN The Magazine, and virtually every skateboard magazine and on sites around the world, from websites and billboards to sports-drink bottles.
This year, Mike releases his first book, BLABAC PHOTO – The Art of Skateboarding Photography, which documents 20 years of skateboarding history pulled from his extensive collection of work.
In celebration of the publication of BLABAC PHOTO and Mike Blabac’s unparalleled visual contribution to the brand, DC has created a limited-edition shoe that will be available exclusively at skate shops to correspond with the launch of the book. The shoe features personal touches, including photo-printed insoles and other unique touches, as well as a signed Blabac photo print in a limited number of boxes. The shoe is especially notable considering DC’s reservation of signature shoes being exclusively for its top pros. The Blabac Azure Mid is the first time a DC signature shoe has been made for a non-professional team member.

*****blogstory title******

When Cebu Pacific started operation using its DC9 planes, I have been their loyal customer and a gold miler at that despite the fact that their planes were older than 20 years. I simply trusted them, liked their very personal service, their on-board games, their summit lounge. I used to buy commuter pass and have been one of those that convinced a lot of people to try this company. In short, they were far better than the national airline.

But when Cebu Pacific changed its fleet, it changed with it their way of doing business, from customer oriented service to pure profit using (rather abusing) the "value" airline.
Below are my reasons why:
1. Many (not sure if all)of their ticketing offices even at airports are private travel agencies, not in anyway attached to Cebu Pacific. Many of these ticketing offices charges additional service fees.
2. Because of such setup, they are in no position to undertake changes in bookings (as in the case of Jakarta, Bangkok, Singapore)and one has to buy a ticket at a regular rate. SO BE CAREFUL WHEN TRAVELING TO THEIR REGIONAL DESTINATIONS. ENSURE NOT TO CHANGE YOUR SCHEDULE OR YOU WILL END UP BUYING AN EXPENSIVE REGULAR PRICED TICKET. (Tip: try other airlines, its cheaper)
3. Their baggage allowance is only 15 kg (10kg for small planes), not a bit more or you get to pay a hefty sum for excess baggage. Other airlines have 20 kg. If you are coming from abroad using other airlines, I advise you not to take this airline because all your savings will end up paying your baggages. They know how to exploit the culture of filipinos of bringing so many "pasalubongs".
4. When buying tickets on-line, never tick that no baggage because if you do, you will pay 400 pesos even if you only have a kilo to check in. I call this pure robbery. I wonder if this is legal.
5. When buying tickets on-line, the default is for you to get an insurance. Be careful to untick it. The only nice thing on line is they let you offset your carbon footprint by ticking that Panda of WWF. This should have been the default.
6. If you are plump, overweight (waistline over 36 inches), tall by filipino standard over 1.75 meter, this airline is not for you because seat distances between rows fit only small sizes comfortably. Their seatbelts are also very short. Unless of course you are willing to pay for their exit row seats which cost 200 pesos, I advise you to take up yoga or train to become a contortionist before taking the ride. CALLING ATTENTION OF ATO!! If we go by the rules of safety, the wider the rows the easier for people to get evacuated in emergencies.
7. Their marketing rest on cheap ticket prices. Beware, the prices of tickets are the same for all the airlines, yet if you fly Cebu Pacific, you will have to buy your own food and water, there are no newspapers and you will freeze inside the plane because they carry no blankets. I just don't know if you need to pay for medicines for emergencies as I have not been sick.
8. Some flights of Cebu Pacific do not use the bridge because of cost saving measures. This is really one of the worst thing they do. Passengers pay for 200 pesos for airport tax but in some instances, eg in some Davao flights, the plane is parked on the tarmac, you use the stairs, you walk to the arrival station, drench in rain or dried by sun, all because of savings.
9. On time 95% of the time? No longer and more likely the NOT on time 95% of the time. Airlines do not make money at the airports so the plane needs to be in the air most of the time. The consequence is that once the plane is late, it accumulates. A flight from Davao to Manila leaving at 8:30 pm finally took off at 12 midnight. They will offer food if the delay time is over four hours.
10. But their practice is not to inform the public immediately. They will inform of the delay on INSTALLMENT BASIS even if they knew before hand that the delay will be for several hours. This removes your posiblity of requesting for tranfer to another airline which they have to pay!
11. Take note of their practice of telling people on their preflight announcement that flight duration is made longer by 10 minutes, such that upon arrival, they will boast that they arrive 10 minutes ahead of scheduled arrival. But this is announcement is done upon touchdown. How many times have we waited at the tarmac for over 10 minutes because the space where to dock is not yet free?
12. But the worst experience I have with this airline is when I was charged double on my credit card. I did not know this but when I checked in, I am being charged for no-show for the same name, same flight, same date. It was only then I realized that they charged me twice.
13. It was good that they would rectify it and debitit back to may credit card. It is very bad because from the time I complained, it took them two months for their accounting to "process it" with todays electronic technology. Today, three months later, the credit company still charges me with interest. I am still awaiting for the debit to be made.
14. I wont travel again on this airline. This is the only way to prevent number 15 to make it in this list.

I wish you revert back to your old planes and nice service.

Stakeholders see brighter future for ICT in Davao

DESPITE its low number of Peza-accredited business processes outsourcing hubs in Davao City, ICT players has remained confident the sector has a brighter future in Davao City.

"The construction of all these BPO spaces is a show of confidence in the city's ICT sector," Lizabel Holganza, president of ICT Davao, said.

In recent years, the city has witnessed the spur of growth of IT-BPO services with multiple locations leveraging their strength to become the outsourcing destination for global business processes.

Nationwide, revenues from the BPO industry has already breached the $4.5 billion mark.

"The industry here is still in its infancy stage, and there are still a lot of speculations going on," Holganza said.

Davao City is among the 2008 Top 10 Philippine IT-BPO Destinations, having been ranked by the Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT) and the Business Processing Association of the Philippines (BPAP) as Number 4 out of 37 Philippine cities in the 1st BPO Summit last December of 2008.

Despite this seemingly enviable position, Davao City only has 1 percent market share as against the industry's total market. But in the past years, Davao City has seen a 56 percent growth in number of IT-BPO jobs in the city.

Davao Norte revs up Adventure Race

By Mera Grace E. Apuya

Davao City (3 July) -- Here comes a race that tours entire Davao del Norte in two days.

The Gov. RDR Cup Island to Highland Adventure Group Race, organized under the Provincial Government Sports Development Program called AGR KIDS (Agenda for Games and Recreation: Kabataan Ilayo sa Drugs) through sports chief Anthony del Rosario, took off last year as a one-day competition passing through four towns and one city—Panabo City, Carmen, Sto. Tomas, Kapalong and Asuncion where challenges await the participants—from the Island Garden City of Samal to Tagum City.

This year, the Provincial Government still in coordination with last year's race director, Erwin "Pastour" Emata—the 2nd Filipino to conquer Mt. Everest—revved it up to an exceeding 250-km race encompassing mountain ranges going up to the rich land and culture of the Municipality of Talaingod where the racers ate a food of the natives called luut (bamboo poles placed on fire to cook with slices of sweet potato and chicken meat inside) which they needed to eat up to proceed to the next destination which is 43 kilometers away.

Before going through a rough 32-km ride to Talaingod on a mountain bike, all 13 teams with three members each (two men and a woman) encountered different challenges and at the same time, experienced the products or services offered by each local government unit (LGU) they moved past.

Race Day 1

In the City of Samal where the race started out, the racers went through local banca paddling from Babak Sea Port to the scenic Vanishing Island (checkpoint 1). From there, they were ferried and dropped one mile away from Panabo Sea Port (checkpoint 2) to perform another task—swimming.

Upon reaching the renowned Panabo Mariculture Park area, the racers had to grill and eat hefty bangus before riding on their bikes to proceed to checkpoint 3 (Municipality of Carmen) where they performed the kadang-kadang loop, a traditional game popular in Carmen.

After doing the loop, they crossed the national highway going to the Municipality of Dujali (checkpoint 4) to catch tilapia which is plenty at the Espartero Farm (the family who won the 2008 Gawad Saka National Award for Outstanding Farm Family).

The racers went to the Municipality of Sto. Tomas (checkpoint 5) to eat a bunch of bananas—a product which, in Region XI, Davao del Norte is the largest export producer—before moving on to checkpoint 6 (Talaingod) then to the last destination (checkpoint 7) of the first day of the race where they finally take a pit stop—the Municipality of San Isidro, the town in the province popular for its special sikwate (a hot chocolate drink made out of cocoa).

Race Day 2

A mouthwatering meal served by the locals of San Isidro—sikwate paired with puto maya—set off the 2nd day of the racers who pedaled all the way to the Municipality of Kapalong (checkpoint 8) to carry out another challenge—empty a bowl of Kapalong's urbane banana flour by blowing and use trisikad as mode of transportation to the Municipality of Asuncion (checkpoint 9).

If biking was what the participants did most on the 1st day of the race, at this point, they traveled either on foot or by scooter to Tagum City after overcoming an obstacle which technology has been innovated by Asuncion —lemon juice processing. However, the obstacle requires that all teams shall not use any cutting tool for the lemons provided by the LGU. Only after drinking up the lemon juice which they squeezed into a battle were they allowed to proceed to the Municipality of New Corella (checkpoint 10).

After making romblon banig (New Corella's finest product), racers advanced to Tagum City where they had a first stop at the embellished La Filipina Public Cemetery (checkpoint 11) to spot the oldest dead person entombed in the place. After submitting the name to the race marshal, racers went ahead to the last checkpoint (Tagum Water District Tank, Rotary) to do rappelling.

Finally passing through 12 checkpoints, racers rode on their scooters to the finish area (RDR Sports Complex adjacent to the Capitol Compound) where they performed tributhlon (team members including one support crew must altogether reach the finish line using the unique slippers provided by tribu apparel, one of the major sponsors which owners also joined the race).

The first team to cross the line was Edge Davao who bagged a whopping P50,000 cash and trophy, the same team who won last year's Adventure Group Race but the original team member is only Christopher Eyao. The other two were replaced with Judelyn Miranda and Marcial Catanggui.

Hard Core Bikers from Bukidnon—Jemarvin Cabilan, Anelia Lucman and Jay Leduna—won the second place who brought home P30,000 cash plus trophy while the 3rd place was captured by Mulatto Pilipinas with Paulo Ouano, Charryl Araneta and Marjun Balaita as team members who garnered P15,000 cash with trophy. The next 7 finishers, who came from distant places outside the province to join this year's race in celebration of the 42nd Araw ng Davao del Norte, pocketed P3,000 per team. (MGA/PGO-ID) [top]

Penshoppe to buy more brands after Regatta (http://www.bworldonline.com/BW070209/content.php?id=044)
Business World Online
2 July 2009

CEBU CITY — Fashion retailer Golden ABC, Inc. is on the lookout for more acquisitions after taking over the Regatta brand early this year.

"If opportunities arise [to acquire other brands], we’ll take them. We’re in constant dialog with a lot of potential acquisitions," said Golden ABC Chief Executive Officer Bernie H. Liu.

He declined to elaborate, but said the company was considering both local and foreign brands.

Golden ABC took over the four Regatta shops, including one in Cebu, in March.

Regatta, a 20-year-old brand, is the company’s first acquisition. Aside from Penshoppe, its flagship brand, Golden ABC also makes Oxygen, Memo and ForMe apparel and accessories.

"Regatta is a good acquisition. It’s a good brand. And since it’s a small company, it’s easy to transform," Mr. Liu said.

Six more Regatta outlets will be opened before the year ends. [B]Mr. Liu said one would be in Cebu, another would be in Davao and the rest would be in Metro Manila.

The Cebu and Davao shops will open either in August or September. Work is ongoing in two new branches in Metro Manila.

"We’re a big company, with a huge overhead cost. The only way to grow our business is to put up more stores," Mr. Liu said.

Golden ABC has over 400 outlets for all its brands.

Golden ABC’s direct selling subsidiary, Red Logo Lifestyle, Inc., is also set to open this week its fifth and sixth branches in Lipa and Cebu cities, respectively.

"There are plans to go to Mindanao, but we’re not rushing. We want to establish the business first in areas where we’ve opened branches," Mr. Liu said.

Red Logo, which started operations in April 2008, has four branches in Metro Manila and over 10,000 dealers nationwide.

Red Logo carries its own brands, such as Fuel, Agenda and Truth. It also carries Golden ABC’s homegrown brands as guest brands.

Golden ABC has been in the fashion retail business for over 20 years. Penshoppe, its flagship brand, was launched during the 1986 People Power Revolution.

Golden ABC reported P1.4 billion in revenues in 2007, up by a tenth. Profits reached P19 million that year, up by a quarter. — Marites S. Villamor

The design concept of the Peace Archway, originated from the fundamental concept of Chinese Architecture. Traditional Chinese architectural elements, culture, sense of community and forms of structure are interpreted in a contemporary and simple design.

Lack of space, infrastructure hamper entry of BPOs in Davao

DAVAO CITY — The entry of big business processes outsourcing (BPO) firms in this city has been reduced to a waiting game as the city’s property sector remains reluctant to allocate enough space without specific commitments from investors.

Lizabel G. Holganza, president of the Information and Technology Association of Davao, Inc., said the real estate sector has not been aggressive in preparing the necessary infrastructure for firms as the city seeks to graduate from the list of "next wave" locations and be considered on the same playing field as Metro Manila and Cebu.

Business process outsourcing firms want ready infrastructure allowing them to relocate in one or two months, she said. Davao City was ranked fourth by the Philippine Cyber Corridor Report 2008 on the top 10 list of "next wave" cities for BPOs.

Davao tourism key players ready for the Mindanao Travel and Tour Expo 2009

The Davao Region Tourism Council and the Department of Tourism in Region (DOT) here are now on their all out efforts for hosting the biggest Mindanao Travel and Tour Expo (MTTE 2009) on August 20-22 at Davao Convention and Trade Center.

Araceli Ayuste, president of the Davao del Norte Provincial Tourism Council and secretary of the Davao Region Tourism Council, said the three-day expo is the biggest tourism event in Mindanao that is timed during the holding of Davao City’s Kadayawan Festival.

Ayuste said the event will also highlight the launching of the tourism road map indicating connectivity of destinations in Mindanao.

samal-island-beach-davaoShe said it is multi-faceted, multi-event exposition of Mindanao’s tourism and related industries as it promotes travel to Mindanao’s best tourist destinations. It is also designed to generate tourism related jobs and employment opportunities and tourism investments.

The expo, she said, will be backed with a job fair in coordination with the Mindanao Economic Development Council (MEDCo), Regional Ecotourism Committee, Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), Board of Investment (BOI) and the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (PCCCII).

She said the Mindanao Tourism and Transport Highway Map will be mounted right at the center of the venue where the scale model of the relief map will show destinations around Mindanao and its connectivity from island to highland destinations. The road map will also be uploaded in a designated website that is still being worked out.

The expo will also feature the Mindanao Interactive Adventure Showcase, Mindanao Tourism and Transport Congress, Mindanao Tourism Investment Summit, Mindanao Wellness Tourism and Hospitality Showcase and Summit, TESDA Regional Congress, Travel Exchange and the launching of the Island-to-Highland Coffee Table Book, Ayuste said.

With regards the exhibit, she said there will 31 booths, nine Pasalubong showcase featuring the island’s “One Town One Product” (OTOP), and 17 adventure showcases with exhibitors coming from the different parts of the Philippines while the Malaysia Tourism Board will be sending a delegation during the expo.

Jonallier Perez, MTTE 09 event coordinator, said as to the adventure showcase there will be a simulation of the product right at the venue as he mentioned that the Fantasy Island of Dapitan City (the first and only theme park in Visayas and Mindanao) will mount a replica of its theme park at the site bringing with them their mascot and the tourist bus “Gloria de Dapitan.”

He said there will also be zip line that the visitors could try for themselves at a minimal fee.

He said among the confirmed participants are Bohol Divers Resort, City of Valencia, Davao Wild Water Adventure, DOT Western Visayas, Eden Nature Park, Hof Gorei Beach Resort, Leticia by the Sea, Nature Spring, One World Travel Express, Punta del Sol Beach Resort, Wind and Wave, Province of Camiguin. Expressing interest to join are the DOT-Western Mindanao, DOT-Ilocos Region, Province of Zamboanga del Norte, City of Dapitan, Zest Air, Samal Resort Owners Association, Province of Bukidnon and Camp Holiday.

Meanwhile, Ayuste said they had embarked the first of the four roadshows promoting the event to areas outside of Davao Region and had been getting positive responses of Region 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13.

During the roadshows, she said they also gather concerns and possible investors for a pre-match whose partnership will be firmed up during the expo.

Ayuste said this activity is anchored on the need to give greater emphasis on local tourism at affordable cost through interconnectivity and accessibility of all stakeholders. (PNA)

Written by: Dakudao , Michael Angelo E.
Friday, 03 July 2009

DAVAO City’s movers and shakers flocked to the Grand Ballroom of the Apo View Hotel last June 29 at 7:00 p.m. to celebrate the 45th Anniversary of the endearing and enduring institution, the Hijos de Davao. But of course, the members gathered together to honor the City’s beloved patron saint, San Pedro, just like what their grandparents and parents religiously observed in the past. It was also one wonderful opportunity for everybody to renew familial ties and aspirations as united Davaoeńos. Surprisingly, despite the rain, the united gathering of families and friends filled the ballroom to capacity for a most enjoyable celebration of the Davao Spirit through music, dance, and tradition.

One of the highlights of the Hijos de Davao annual celebration is the presentation of the Muse. This year’s Muse is Margarita Ignacia “Migs” Bendigo Nograles. Migs is the youngest daughter of House Speaker Prospero Castillo Nograles and Rhodora Bendigo-Nograles. She is currently taking up AB Management Economics at the Ateneo de Manila University; and is a Central Board Representative of her University Student Council. The young and pretty morena is a theater artist, a glee club member, and co-captain of the track and field team.
Chosen as official escort for the 45th Hijos de Davao Muse is the handsome Luisito Emmanuel Garcia Rabat, the eldest son of Carlo Luis Peralta Rabat and Maria Emperatriz Garcia-Rabat. Sito is presently a third year student taking up AB International Studies major in European Studies at the De La Salle University in Manila. He is a member of the Social Political Party Santugon, an active participant of the European Studies Association, and works hard as Publicity Officer of the La Sallian Sports Commission.

Representative Carol Lopez of the Yakap Party List, who was escorted by the Hijos de Davao past President Rodolfo Garcia del Rosario, Jr., pinned the sash on the Muse. Presenting a beautiful bouquet to Migs was Congresswoman Reylina Nicolas of the 4th District of Bulacan who was escorted by Congressman Justin Marc Chipeco of the 2nd District of Laguna. Crowning the Hijos de Davao Muse was Congresswoman Ma. Milagros Magsaysay of the 1st District of Zambales who had former showbiz personality, Congressman Danilo Ramon Fernandez of the 1st District of Laguna, as escort.
As has been the tradition in all of the Hijos de Davao celebrations in the past, this 45th Anniversary’s Rigodon de Honor was participated in by 22 pairs. The glamorous and elegant ladies wore fabulous ternos designed by Manila’s top designers like Larry Espinosa, Paul Cabral and Rajo Laurel; and our very own talented designers in Davao namely Bob Castillo, Emi Ingles, Popoy Barba, Aztec Barba, to mention some. Do watch out for the special August issue of the Zee Lifestyle Magazine which will feature the 45th Anniversary of the Hijos de Davao and its stylish ladies on its glossy pages.

The officers of the Hijos de Davao 2009-2010, who were officially inducted by House Speaker Prospero C. Nograles, include Ma. Lourdes Soccoro-Medina Estanislao (President), Jacqueline Garcia-Dizon (Vice-Pres.), Rowena Hizon-Daluz (Secretary), Pilar Rosario-Rodriguez (Treasurer), Carmen Soriano- Diano (Assist. Treasurer), Ma. Richelle Vicente (Business Manager), and Michaelangelo Ebro Dakudao (PRO).
The Members of the Board are Atty. Rose Marie T. Cabaguio, Mabel Soriano-Lemen, Dr. Armella Militante Aquino, Editha Lizada Fuentes, Premie Salas, Atty. Karlo Alexei Nograles, Jerivic Cabreros, Dr. Luis Gahol, Jose Claro Velez and former Hijos de Davao President Rodolfo Garcia del Rosario, Jr.
Mary Ann Maceda-Montemayor, Leticia Militante, Atty. Carmelo Gempesaw, Benjamin Lizada and Alfonso Guino-o compose the Hijos de Davao Advisers.
The Hijos de Davao Foundation’s Board of Trustees is comprised of Chairman Hector Maniquis, Vice-Chairman Federico Garcia Pineda III, Treasurer Emperatriz V. Garcia and Secretary Benjamin Lizada; with Vicente Tionko and Perla Palma Gil as directors.
The Hijos de Davao Foundation is a non-stock and non-profit corporation established to “engage in activities and programs dedicated to the promotion, enhancement, preservation and projection of the cultural heritage of Davao; and the educational and social amelioration of Davaoeńos…” The Foundation has been offering scholarship grants to deserving students, conducting free surgical services with the participation of foreign and local doctors, among its many outreach programs.
Mabuhay Hijos de Davao!
Happy Birthday greetings to tita Nena Suarez- Magallanes (July 1) and tita Nene Maceda (July 2).

It depends.Say for example Silk Air flight from Davao to Singapore via Cebu. The Davao-Cebu sector is domestic while Cebu-Singapore sector is International. If Silk Air goes direct to Singapore, that is an international flight.

However, if the plane go to Cebu for refueling stop before heading to Singapore, meaning, the passengers just stays on the plane just like the stop-over of PAL in Guam for its KLAX flight, then its still international.

If passengers disembark the plane, then international flights starts from Cebu, or if the plane last stops at Davao then international flight commence from Davao. Thats how it works.

You might just be confused on Cebu Pacific ticket promo. It simply meant that you are booked in one ticket for multiple flights. Where ever you go in the Philippines that is a domestic flight.

Exit points can only be made at international airport. The flight becomes international when you finally leave for foreign soil.:)

see,

SM Davao going into vegetable farming

DAVAO CITY — The SM group has reserved 5,000 square meters at its backyard in the SM mall in Davao for 130 farmers to plant vegetables to be sold in the supermarket.

Cristie S. Angeles, SM Foundation’s project director, said the farm, adjacent to the mall’s parking lot, will serve as a model for the other SM malls nationwide to allocate free space for backyard farming.

The project is part of the Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan program of SM Foundation and Harbest Agri-Business Corp. which aims to introduce new technology to vegetable farmers to maximize yield. The SM mall in Davao City will shoulder the cost to clear the ground as well as put up facilities, while Harbest Agri-Business will provide seedlings.

"We insisted that all farmers be legitimate and marginalized so the technical people of Harbest are doing a profile of them," Ms. Angeles said, adding that each farmer should own at least a 100-square-meter plot each to qualify.

Arsenio G. Barcelona, Harbest Agri-Business president, said training would last for three months, by which time SM expects a harvest of crops to be sold in its supermarket under the Fresh Green brand.

Under the deal, SM will get all the harvest for free, being the landowner, while farmers will get in return free training, food, and seedlings once they graduate from the program. — Joel B. Escovilla

IFC changing Davao's agribiz landscape

Friday, July 3, 2009
By Carlo P. Mallo

WORLD BANK Group member International Financial Corp. is changing the landscape of the agribusiness industry in Davao City as it promotes the internationally recognized Rainforest Alliance certification.

The certification is given to agribusiness firms which promote sustainable farming practices that benefit the entire supply chain, including big companies, small farming communities, regulators, and most importantly, the consumers.

The internationally recognized certification of sustainable farming practices gives qualifying farms the right to use the Rainforest Alliance Certified seal, which guarantees consumers that the farms take good care of their workers, communities, and the environment.

The certification reduces costs and increases savings for producers by assuring efficient, effective, and environment-friendly farm practices.

"Whether reforesting old farmland, building schools and medical facilities, or providing farm workers with just wages, the Rainforest Alliance Certified seal indicates sustainable practices and a sustainable future," Sabrina Vigilante, Rainforest Alliance's chief of marketing, said.

Rainforest Alliance is an international nonprofit organization working to conserve biodiversity and to ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use, business practices, and consumer behavior.

The organization involves businesses and consumers in bringing responsibly produced goods and services to a marketplace where the demand for sustainable production is growing steadily.

At present, the organization has certified 18 percent of bananas, 1.3 percent of coffee, and 3 percent of tea products that are globally traded.

IFC is working with a leading exporter to train out-grower banana farmers for Rainforest Alliance certification that will enable their crops to meet premium market standards and increase their income.

Out-grower farms in the Philippines supply up to 50 percent of the production of the Cavendish banana export industry, the country's 10th largest export valued at US$400 million in 2007.

"Lessons learned from the project will be applied to other banana out-grower farms working with other leading firms and to other crop sectors," Colin Taylor, IFC manager for the Davao City-based Agribusiness Linkages Program, said during a local conference of IFC for agribusiness industry leaders.

Peter Sprang of Rainforest Alliance's Asia Pacific regional office said that on a global scale, they are already certifying coffee, chocolates, tea, bananas, mangoes, pineapples, and avocadoes, among other agricultural products.

"But here in the Philippines, the certification standards in place pertain only to bananas and pineapples. We are still in the process of developing local indicators for certification of Philippine crops including coffee, cacao, sugar cane, oil palm, and coconut," Sprang said. (CPM/With press release)

Pagunsan winning Apo Classic in Davao
Saturday, July 4, 2009
By Henry C. Villalva

AS OF last Friday, Negrense golfer Juvic Pagunsan, a protégé of the Bacolod Golf and Country Club in Binitin, Murcia, stretched his early three-shot lead to five with only one round left in the ICTSI-Philippine Golf Tour’s Apo Classic at the Apo Golf and Country Club course in Davao City and appeared clearly closing in on his first title in the revived local pro tour.

The 30-year-old 2007 Scoop Bacolod awardee for golf continued to dominate his rivals with accurate driving and superb iron play, stringing nines of 34-35 to come up with a 36-hole aggregate of 135.

For updates from around the country, follow Sun.Star on Twitter

Reports Friday said with a five stroke lead over closest pursuer Jerome Delariarte, and barring any major disaster along the way, Pagunsan was already close to bringing home the top prize of P200,000 in the 54-hole event that serves as the third leg of the 10-stage circuit sponsored by the International Container Terminal Services Inc.

“It feels good to be on a winning mood, but it’s not over until it’s over,” Pagunsan told covering sports reporters in an interview Friday. “The field is too talented and no one can afford to be overconfident at any stage in the tournament.”

Delariarte, who finished behind amateur Rufino Bayron in the Valley leg of last year’s three-stage ICTSI-RP Tour, matched Pagunsan’s three-under card output, rallying with a two-under 34 on his homeward trip at the front to pool a 140.

Pagunsan took a break from his stint in the Asian pro tour to see action in this year’s ICTSI event.

Davao City was ranked fourth by the Philippine Cyber Corridor Report 2008 on the top 10 list of "next wave" cities for BPOs.

business world online (http://www.bworldonline.com/BW070209/content.php?id=102)

^^ i thought this was already addressed with the booming construction of spaces for BPO's in davao, pero ing ani diay ka grabe ang demand sa IT na kulang pa rin ang mga nakita nato na constructions? davao still needs more spaces? kagrabe man pala ng demand.

Kulang pa tlga...we have upcoming spaces....underconstruction na mga projects, but these IT and BPO firms need space NOW! As in now!

ALU-TUCP opens Southern Mindanao office

By Mai Gevera

Davao City (4 July) -- Associated Labor Unions-Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (ALU-TUCP) founder Atty. Democrito Mendoza led the inauguration of the 6-storey Southern Mindanao Regional Office Building yesterday along M. Roxas St., Davao City.

With offices based in Cebu City, Manila, and Cagayan de Oro, the association opened its office in Davao to signify its strong commitment to its members in the city.

"We have strong industries here especially on agriculture, banking, and geothermal and that pushed us to really establish an office here." said Atty. Raymond Mendoza, TUCP Party List Representative.

The P40 million building is opened for commercial establishment rentals for the first and second floor. The whole of third floor is intended for the regional office; while the sixth floor is designed as a convention area.

To make the establishment self-generating, the fourth and fifth floors were opened as a hostel where federation and union members can stay while they transact business in the city.

Mendoza bared that the plan of constructing the building was thought about twenty years ago, however, due to budget requirements the construction was only realized this year.

"By opening this building, we can tell our members that we care for them and we offer more services from the minimal membership dues that they pay to the union," he said.

Mindanao Culinary Festival 2009:
Trailblaizing trends and opportunities

FOR the year 2009, the Davao Tourism Association (DATA) is delighted to announce that the Mindanao Culinary Festival (MCF) will be organized in a different fashion, doing away with the traditional competitions which have been staged yearly. With its theme, “Trailblazing Trends and Opportunities…” the major highlight is the conduct of a series of trainings to be conducted during the MCF season, from June-mid September. Participants will primarily be the members of DATA and non-member establishments as well.
Initially, DATA has identified and categorized the trainings which their members need such as: on food handling and food safety, kitchen operations, canteen and restaurant operations, servicing, and related tourism-services such as frontline operations and customer handling/services. The courses that are appropriate to the students will also be opened to them on a first-come, first-served basis. By providing the members with a need-focused training, DATA hopes to achieve a highly-competitive service-oriented tourism industry in Davao where services are offered with the highest standards.

Eiga Sai is back...this is the second time this event is held right?

"By opening this building, we can tell our members that we care for them and we offer more services from the minimal membership dues that they pay to the union," he said.
i wonder if there is a court for industrial disputes/cases that is based in davao. i suppose thereare quite a huge labour union base in the agri sector(especally the 3 davao provinces + socsargen region) like plantations, etc. and also in other industries. davao city is huge let alone the region

Good question.

There was a time when we passed by Cebu first before going directly to Davao and we were made to disembark in the terminal but were made to wait in the departure lounge only, so was that flight of Silkair from Cebu to Davao domestic or international? It was the Davao immigration who stamped our passport... so which is which nga ba? :D

confuing right. probly true to a obvious domestic airport that arent classified international for reasons like it does not/cannot handle regular scheduled international flight due to market viability. these airports have to feed their passengers to manila airport

SM to build more malls in Cebu
CEBU CITY — SM Prime Holdings, Inc. is negotiating for the purchase of three properties for the establishment of three more shopping malls in Metro Cebu.

Hans T. Sy, SM Prime president, said the target is to have a second mall in Cebu by 2011.

"We’re in the middle of negotiations. We will come up with some good news towards the third quarter [of this year]. But definitely, we will have at least a second site in Cebu by 2011," Mr. Sy said.

Among the three properties under negotiation is a lot within the South Road Properties (SRP), a 300-hectare property that was reclaimed and developed by the Cebu city government.

Mr. Sy said he hoped to acquire all three properties, each having a size of four to five hectares. Negotiations with the Cebu city government over the SRP started last year. Initially, SM Prime had planned to acquire a 20-hectare property and introduce a mixed-use development similar to that in the Mall of Asia complex.

"If I could [acquire all three], I would. Hopefully, we could do something about SRP," he said. There is presently only one SM mall in Cebu and three others in the Visayas — one in Bacolod in Negros Occidental and two in Iloilo City.

As soon as a deal is closed by the third quarter, commercial development will start immediately, he said. If two or all three properties are acquired, development will be implemented simultaneously. Construction will take between 18 and 30 months.

SM usually starts with small developments, or about 85,000 square meters, but with provisions to expand to 200,000 square meters, Mr. Sy said.

SM recently acquired properties in Davao and General Santos cities in Mindanao. Both malls are scheduled to open in 2011. Two more malls in Luzon are scheduled to open this year. Four others are under construction and scheduled to open next year.

There are now 36 SM malls nationwide.

In China, Mr. Sy said SM Prime would open a fourth mall to be located in Suzhou next year and expand the Xiamen mall toward the end of this year. "China is our growth story five years from now," he said.

SM is eyeing additional malls in second- and third-tier cities there as soon as "brand equity" is strengthened.

In Cebu, SM is focused on completing the Radisson Cebu Hotel, a 400-room upscale business hotel adjacent to the existing SM City Cebu mall, by the end of November this year. The hotel is targeted to be fully operational by December this year.

The proposed SMX Convention Center adjacent to the hotel has been temporarily set aside for lack of parking space, Mr. Sy said.

"The convention center is part of it [hotel development]. But it’s not yet final. We may not have enough space for parking," he added.

Both the hotel and convention center are to be partly funded by the proceeds from the recently concluded P10-billion retail bond offering of the Sy family’s listed holding firm, SM Investments Corp. — Marites S. Villamor

Davao trade expo expected to lure foreign traders despite Euro chamber’s pullout

DAVAO CITY — Organizers of the Davao Trade Expo (DATE) expect more foreign traders to visit this city for the three-day exhibit that opens Sept. 17, even as they confirmed that a contingent from the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines has cancelled its participation due to security concerns.

Malou G. Monteverde, chairperson of DATE’s organizing committee, said individual participants from Belgium, the European Union, the US and areas comprising the East ASEAN Growth Area have committed to participate in this year’s trade expo. Ms. Monteverde said organizers have already confirmed participation by at least half of the 200 targeted wholesalers and distributors for the exhibit that will feature agricultural products, gifts, toys and hardware, tourism, information and communications technology, as well as financial products and packages for small and medium enterprises.

"We are hoping to surpass previous DATE sales by 20% this year," she told reporters here.

Elcid S. Ablang, executive director of the Davao business chamber, said this year’s trade expo would not just showcase Davao’s best but would also address the needs of different industries operating in the region.

A report from the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc., showed that exhibitors in last year’s trade expo earned a total of P31.28 million.

Davao business conference revived

Organizers have also decided to revive the Davao Business Conference, which would be held simultaneously with the trade expo, to discuss issues now facing industries.

The last Davao Business Conference was held in 2005.

Outside of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Ablang said the business chambers of Davao Oriental and Compostela Valley would also be participating in the conference.

The gathering, he said, would be a venue for the region’s private business leaders and the government’s decision makers to exchange knowledge on "champion products" from each of the provinces in the Davao Region and come up with a road map to promote or address current concerns.

Davao Region comprises Davao del Sur, Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental and Compostela Valley as well as the cities of Davao, Digos, Panabo, Samal, and Tagum. — J. B. Escovilla

Executive order signed for Kadayawan committee

by Carlo P. Mallo
Sun.Star Davao

IT'S all set for the Kadayawan 2009 as Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has signed executive order 13 convening the local government unit and the private sector for the festival in August.

"The city mayor has already signed executive order number 13, which creates the steering committee for the Kadayawan," Councilor Myrna Dalodo-Ortiz announced on the weekly television program Gikan sa Masa Para sa Masa.

The city mayor will be the chair for the Kadayawan this year, while businessman Lorenzo Te will be the co-chair representing the private sector. Vice mayor Sara Duterte will be the vice chair.

It is not clear, however, how much budget has been approved by the city mayor for the festival, as it was not mentioned by Dalodo-Ortiz.

In a previous interview, City Tourism Office chief Rizal Giovanni Aportadera said they are asking for a budget ranging from P9 million to P12 million for the week-long festival, which will kick off on the third week of August.

The Kadayawan is the biggest and grandest festival in Davao City, earning it the moniker "the festival of festivals."

"We have already prepared the groundwork, it's all prepared," Aportadera said.

As always, the highlight of the festivities will be the Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan or street dancing and the grand floral float parade, together with the Lumadnong Kasaulugan and the Lumadnong Kagikan which focuses on the culture of the indigenous people of Davao City, showcasing their dances and songs.

The festival is also expected to draw one of the biggest numbers of tourists for the city this year.

MPIC vows continuous support to Davao Doc

METRO Pacific Investments Corp. (MPIC) chair Manuel V. Pangilinan has vowed continuous support to efforts to further improve services at Davao Doctors Hospital (DDH).

In a video message during DDH's 40th year celebrationon Friday, Pangilinan said that he is proud of MPIC's association with the medical institution, touted to be the best in Mindanao.

"I would like to give credit to Dr. (Honorio) Hilario for having the vision," Pangilinan said in his two-minute message.

Last year, MPIC acquired 34.6 percent of shares in DDH, the controlling stake.

On Friday, DDH also launched its new logo and tagline which encapsulates the vision of the hospital.

"We Care for Life," the new tag line shows that the hospital's core value is in providing care that extends beyond the physical well-being of its patients.

At least two infrastructure developments are already underway at DDH with one expanding the doctors' clinics with a five-storey expansion adjoining the medical tower and the main hospital building.

A multi-storey steel building is also under construction on Malvar St., which will address the congested parking in the area.

An urban-punk reverie in natural fiber, wood, feathers and skins

Each dress is a story to be told. A tale, lost and discovered, in unconventional couture that is both graphic and organic, young designer Garimon Roferos unfolds the story of his life and work in the language of clothes, worded in dream-like thoughts and ideas.

His designs are the artist’s handwriting of the times that we live in, a mirror of costume and society, and the many possible changes that can happen, if we only allow ourselves, like Garimon, to push forward and thread our thoughts and stories.

Garimon was born in Davao to an agriculturist father. At a very young age, he was already braiding and playing with natural fibers. During his years in grade school, the young

Garimon would gather bits and pieces of scraps and found objects, out of which he created by hand tiny bags and lampshades. He was likewise fascinated by the window display in a department store located near their house, and eagerly awaited the monthly change of display. This fascination grew and he hoped to become a window display artist someday.

He graduated from Holy Cross of Davao College and later took a fashion course at Slim’s in Manila. In 1989, Garimon was hired as fashion designer in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where he worked hands-on, cutting and sewing evening gowns for Arab women. There he learned to balance his designs between austerity and excess. With his youthful spirit and creativity that knows no bounds, he would, in the seven years in Riyadh, realize that he had the courage to change ideas and reverse the norms in fashion.

His experimental approach sometimes ventured into over-the-top ornamentation. But, then again, one always finds something stimulating and challenging in the designs he creates, however idiosyncratic, that manages to cross over into the realm of art.

Coming home to the Philippines in 1998, Garimon opened shop in Davao, and there re-discovered his love for natural fibers. This fueled his need for newer means of expression.
Working on the bountiful banana fibers, harvested for him by former members of the Moro National Liberation Front, the designer embarked on a fluid collaboration with weavers and sewers.

Conceptual, complex and labor-intensive, his new designs took on a heightened sense of adventure and fragility, almost deviant but with a capacity to communicate and to challenge our own imagination. Garimon also incorporated cultured pearls bought from Muslim merchants, sterling silver and banana fibers to create distinctive designs that are both eccentric and classic.

A year later his terno gown entry, made of sun-dried water lilies, won a Citation Award in Paris, France, at the Concours Internationale des Jeunes Creatures de Mode, which was held at the Carousel de Louvre. In 2003, his urban punk mixed-collage of handpainted and re-embroidered denim terno made it to the top ten finalists in the Young Designers Competition of the Terno Project of the Metropolitan Museum of Manila. The voluminous bouffant gown depicted the various ethnic minorities of Mindanao.

Last year at the “Hiblang Filipina” gala fashion show at the Manila Hotel, his abstract and extravagant collection made of twisted and woven banana fibers was an obsessive study in cut, construction, texture and embellishment.

Reflecting on how far he has traveled in his career in fashion design, Garimon says, “I am halfway there, but I feel that I should go back to the Middle East. Fashion there is so much alive and adventurous. There are no boring or safe designs. They simply don’t exist there. I want to evolve further in whatever directions and with no limits.”

Reality and dreams, fragility and rock, cultural references and personal emotions, all these come together naturally in the creative mind of Garimon Roferos. This young designer’s intuitive feel for craft, his thematic approach, his travels and personal memories all add up to inspire him to go one step further than the unexpected.

At the 2008 Philippine Fashion Week, Garimon recycled and deconstructed leather and faux tortoise handbags into hand-worked corsets and tops, matched with jersey gowns.
Perhaps, more than being the window display artist that he had wanted to be, he has now morphed into being his own window to the new world, telling his stories and dreams, dress after dress, season after season.

Aksyon Mindanaw Forum slated (http://pia.gov.ph/?m=12&fi=p090704.htm&no=06)

by RG Alama

Davao City (4 July) -- Aksyon Mindanaw, a multi-sectoral and multi-peoples alliance based in Davao City will be holding the launch of a series of forums to discuss issues facing Mindanaoans and encourage local and national candidates to take heed of these discussions.

A forum and general assembly will be held this July 5, Sunday at E-Vibe Super Club in Torres Street, Davao City which will be graced by speakers led by Senator Francis Pangilinan, Fr. Alberto Alejo of Konsult Mindanaw and Undersecretary Virgilio Leyretana, chair of the Mindanao Economic and Development Council or Medco.

The forum will be attended by about 200 leaders in Davao City aimed at gathering inputs on the peace process, the Mindanao economic situation, health and environment.

"We are trying to put together a people's agenda for Mindanao. This will embody our basic call which is sustained action for a peaceful, progressive and green Mindanao." Aksyon Mindanao President Muss Lidasan said.

Lidasan challenged the political candidates to shun politics and set a clear Mindanao agenda that will serve as a barometer for Mindanaoans in choosing their new leaders in the next elections.

"What are their plans to resolve the conflict in Mindanao ? How will they address the economic and environmental issues that hamper its progress? These are the questions that we want to be answered by the 2010 aspirants," Lidasan said.

Aksyon Mindanaw is currently soliciting ideas and recommendations which will set the foundation for a concrete and realizable agenda for Mindanao. (PIA XI)

Davao City still enjoys the distinction of being the only city in the Philippines with an emergency response center available on call 24 hours a day. Just dial 911 on any landline or mobile phone (toll free) in case of emergency.

Recently, the Davao City 911 Emergency Response Center opened a new operations hub in the south — a stone’s throw away from where I live, in fact. The new center used to be a public market. And, for the life of me, I cannot fathom why the city government back in the ’80s decided to put a wet market in the middle of a residential district. Needless to say, it was a terrible idea. I’m glad that the city has found a much better use of the facility.

From their new base in Matina, these are the city’s services that will respond to emergency situations anywhere in the city: Emergency Medical Service, Urban Search & Rescue, Fire Auxiliary Service, and the K-9 Service.

Davao Doctors drafting 10-year expansion plan
Business World (http://www.bworldonline.com/BW070709/content.php?id=045)

http://www.bworldonline.com/BW070709/hospital.jpg
The Davao City hospital’s occupancy rates have exceeded 80%.

DAVAO CITY — Rising room occupancy rates have prompted the Davao Doctors Hospital to craft a 10-year expansion plan.

Andres M. Licaros, Jr., hospital president and chief executive officer, said a reassessment of the hospital’s operation has become a priority following the entry of Metro Pacific Investment Corp., which now holds a 34% stake.

In previous years, Davao Doctors Hospital’s room occupancy did not go beyond 80%. Officials said they would discuss investment requirements for the expansion as soon as the expansion plan is completed.

"I honestly did not expect that our occupancy will be this high this early," said Mr. Licaros in a statement.

Growth in occupancy has become a major challenge for the 40-year-old hospital, he said. Room turnover, Mr. Licaros explained, has been a major issue for management considering that some patients had insisted on getting admitted even after being informed that they could not be accommodated.

Davao Doctors is considering building an "apartelle" since about 45% of those who frequent the hospital are from out of town, with relatives of patients often insisting on staying in hospital rooms.

A team of architects led by Prosperidad C. Luis, a known hospital master planner, will help management formulate plans to achieve its goal of accommodating more patients as well as offering the best services for its market.

At the end of the month, the hospital will have its linear accelerator, a P100-million equipment bought from England. The equipment is for general purpose radiation, modified for radio surgery or intensified modulation radiation therapy, a cancer treatment. Another new acquisition is a digital mammogram used to detect breast cancer.

A 200-car parking area, worth P70 million, is expected to be finished within the third quarter, Mr. Licaros said. Davao Doctors is located at the heart of the city’s central business district, where parking space has been a problem.

The hospital is also reaching out to the public on illness prevention. Dr. Dominador O. Cabrera, hospital vice-president for medical affairs, said: "It is sad that when they (patients) come to the hospital, they are already terminally ill," Mr. Cabrera said. — Carmelito Q. Francisco

Davao Doctors eyeing to be Minda's medical tourism hub

DAVAO Doctors Hospital (DDH) is now processing its application to be the center of medical tourism in Mindanao.

DDH president and CEO Andres Licaros Jr. announced this in a breakfast press briefing Monday.

"We are in the process of the application," Licaros said. "And there are tax incentives for the equipment being brought in."

Now on its 40th year, DDH has been touted to be the leading healthcare facility in Mindanao with its roster of medical

professionals and its state-of-the-art facilities.

"The BIMP-Eaga (Brunei Indonesia Malaysia Philippines East Asean Growth Area) is part of our long term goal," Licaros said.

At present, DDH is in the process of upgrading its facilities and infrastructure with its planned expansions.

On Monday, DDH executives met with a top architect for their long-term plan of hospital expansion that will optimize the space.

"We will discuss the layout of the new facility," Licaros said.

A 10-storey medical tower, which houses the doctors’ clinics, is flanked by a five-storey hospital building.

"We have almost all sub specialties covered," Dr. Dominador Cabrera, vice president for medical affairs, said.

With medical specialists practicing at DDH, the hospital management finds it necessary to continually upgrade their equipment.

"We provide them with the best equipment," Cabrera said.

Igacos resort boom marks tourism sector's resiliency

by RG Alama

Davao City (7 July) -- An increase in the number of resorts in the Island Garden City of Samal is a mark of resilience that characterizes the tourism sector in Davao.

According to Araceli Ayuste President of the Davao Region Tourism Council and proprietor of the Punta del Sol resort in Samal said that from 20 resorts in Samal Island in 2007, there are at least 40 resorts in 2009 with more being developed.

Ayuste said that tourism in Davao is not affected by the global financial crisis judging by the tourism activities in the region. She said that even if you go to the hotels in Davao, they are nearly full-booked as conventions and lakbay-aral are being hosted and held in the City.

She says that the tourism growth has enticed many resorts in Samal to become active with their group the Samal Island Davao Resort Owners Association or SIDROA. In the past resort owners were hesitant to join the groups but with the upsurge in tourism, many are now joining because it benefits their businesses.

The group has about 40 member resorts from the Triple A to the uncategorized. Of the number about 25 resort-members are active in Sidroa. Together they are pushing for the region to position and promote itself, particularly as an island destination.

One tourism activity Ayuste is pushing together with technical diver Carlos Munda is diving. Currently Samal has three resorts with diving facilities. Pearl Farm, Paradise and Araceli's Punta del Sol.

Munda, the only certified technical diver in Mindanao, said the only one hindering the growth of diving businesses here is the lack of diving tourists. About 95% of the divers are locals of those from Davao City while 5% are tourists.

Unlike in Anilao and Puerto Galera, where 90% of the divers are tourists spending about P6,000 to P10,000 per weekend. He said that aside from boat rentals, tanks, food and accommodations, these tourists employ guides that generate local employment unlike local divers who are familiar with the place and spend lesser than tourists.

According to Ayuste, diving tourists would spend about P3, 000 per weekend in Davao, while local divers spend about P2, 000. Punta del Sol averages about 50 divers during weekends. She says that Samal has around 17 dive sites.

Munda also points out that Igacos has no Dive resort yet. These are resorts that cater only to divers and wouldn't delve into other amenities. These resorts he says are not capital intensive and hence fit for Igacos' community-based tourism enterprises.

Diving, he said is not about corals as divers also want to find big fishes and sea critters in different underwater environment. The current diving mania today Munda says is muck diving, which is diving done in muddy or mucky waters.

Muck dive sites harbor exotic and unusual organisms that lives in the sediments and which make for great underwater photography subjects. (PIA XI) [top]

Davao Chinatown

EVERY major cosmopolitan city in the world has a Chinatown. San Francisco and New York. Paris and London. Tokyo and Singapore. Sydney and Melbourne. Manila, and, just recently, Davao.
Whenever we travel outside of the Philippines, we always try to check out where the Chinatown in the place we are visiting is. First reason is for the food. We simply cannot sustain any holiday without rice. Second reason is for the pasalubong shopping. Yes, you can always count on Chinatown for the best value souvenirs you can take home to your family and friends.

And Chinatown isn’t that difficult to find. It is a major tourist attraction in all the cities. It is highlighted in the maps and it is a must-see for every city tour package. There is always a Chinatown stop or station for the train, subway, metro, monorail, bus, tram, and cable car.
In our recent travel to Australia, we stayed in the heart of Chinatown in Sydney and in Melbourne. It is where all the action is. Establishments in Sydney and Melbourne close shop between 5:00 to 6:00 pm so one must do one’s shopping early in the day. There is only one day of the week when they have late shopping hours and it is every Thursday in Sydney.
But not in Chinatown. For as long as there are customers, the Chinatown is open for business.
So after a full day of sightseeing, we headed to Chinatown and have all our best meals ever and later burn the extra calories off bargain hunting for souvenir items that are all now “Made in China” anyway. And we noticed that the locals love hanging out in Chinatown, too. They eat and drink there and even go karaoke and clubbing there. As I said, everything is happening in Chinatown. It never sleeps.

Most of these Chinatowns only occupy a small land area in their respective host city’s commercial district. It is usually concentrated in one city block or a strip that you can quickly cover on foot. Always its area is bounded by at least two archways in red, green, and gold colors with traditional Chinese symbols such as a dragon or a lion.
In Davao City, we have the biggest Chinatown in the world in terms of land area at approximately 44 hectares covering at least four barangays and several streets. You can cover it by foot but it will take you at least half a day, even if you are a really fast walker.

And the Davao City Chinatown Development Council, a joint private sector and government body chaired by no less than Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte, is planning to put up not just two archways, but five. The two finished archways in Davao Chinatown are really grand, even grander than the Chinatown archways Down Under (come to think of it, even grander than the archways in San Francisco and New York). The first one named Prosperity Arch, near Jones Circle, was donated by the Villa-Abrille clan; and the second one, the Unity Arch, near Magsaysay Park, was donated by members of the Dabaw Kaisa Foundation. The third one called Peace Arch is donated by the Yuchengco Group of Companies and is due to be inaugurated in August this year. Two more archways are in the drawing board with donors already committed.

So if we talk about which Chinatown is the biggest in area and the grandest in archways, Davao City holds the record, no doubt. But is Davao Chinatown a “happening” place? Only until 5:00 to 6:00 PM on weekdays and practically a ghost town on weekends. But that’s today. Tomorrow can be a different story.
Maybe we should take our cue from the established Chinatowns of other world-class cities and focus on two things.
First, great Chinese food offerings (from fine dining to street vendors and the various gradations in between) with options for al fresco or outdoor dining in the middle of the streets, under the grand archways.
Second, good value Davao and Mindanao souvenir shops. It doesn’t matter if they are made in China, for as long as the items have Davao icons printed on them. Because Aldevinco now just sells items from Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangkok, and Hong Kong. Where do we go for Davao souvenir items? Chinatown!

Then tour packages can be programmed around a Davao Chinatown adventure. We can have historic walking tours or “trisikad” guided tours. Floating restaurants near Magsaysay Park and Sta. Ana Wharf. Even lunch and dinner cruises that can take guests all the way to Samal. We can have fresh Davao seafood catch laid out by the sidewalk and cooked right in front of us, Chinese style. After all, we had kangaroo meat in sezchuan sauce in Melbourne Chinatown so why not panga ng tuna in sweet and sour sauce in Davao Chinatown?
The possibilities are endless and exciting. Let’s turn Davao Chinatown into the hippest “gimik” place in the city and establish it as a truly world-class tourist destination, as Councilor Susabel Reta, Davao Chinatown’s proponent, and Atty. Melchor Quitain, the Mayor’s representative in the Chinatown Council, envision it to be.

Pearl Farm Resort on Samal Island, Davao

It was 1982, when I came to Mindanao for the first time in my life. I stepped already on Philippine soil in 1976, before heading to Japan. Being back from Japan it happened that I got several pen pals from the Philippines - one from Manila, one from Cebu City, one from Davao City and one from Zamboanga City.

As I said, in 1982 I visited Mindanao for the very first time - and, I got married here in 1983.

Since 1999, after almost annual visits I settled down in Davao City for good with my family. I am still being very busy with several businesses and tasks. That’s good. Even being an expat, I wouldn’t love to sit under a palm tree and count my days waiting for the next monthly pension.
Why Davao?

Well, I could write several posts, just to answer this simple question. As one could read in a brochure: “If you are smarter than a 5th grader, then you would know most of Davao’s titles - Orchid Capital of the Philippines (yipee - my “waling-waling” is blooming again!), one of the largest cities of the world (when it comes to the total area, IT IS the world’s largest city!), the Fruit Basket of the Philippines (come here and you’ll see, that’s true!)… and so on and so on…

And, as many Filipino writers or actors or others voiced out before: “Aside from all these monikers, the thing I love most about my home town is that you’ll never run out of things to do and to enjoy.”

Where to start? Don’t worry, I’ll also take you through my top destinations where to stay, dine, shop, meet and enjoy.

Please bear with me: I might have to have many ideas where to stay and what to do. One thing is for sure: you need more then one day to experience Davao City and its surroundings.

Paradise Island Park and Beach Resort on Samal Island in the Gulf of Davao, take the boat at Km. 9, Sasa. Sure, there are a lot more: Barcelo Pearl Farm Resort, Costa Marina, Eden Nature Park. You really can’t go to Davao without visiting its beautiful beaches. Soft white sand and clear waters, Samal Island, i.e. is the place to go to spend that relaxing day (or those days) out in the sun.

Why Davao City?

You can have it all here in Davao City and its surroundings: nature tripping, wild water adventures, shopping and dining. Hold on, hold on, guys. Don’t get me wrong, this post isn’t mean to be a commercial for Davao City or Southern Mindanao. Yes, I also like to visit General Santos City, Sarangani or all the beautiful places in Bukidnon or Davao Oriental.

Or:

* Aldevinco Arts and Crafts Center, C.M.Recto Street, near one of my favorite hotels, the Marco Polo Davao City. No one leaves Davao City, without PASALUBONG, and the best place to find native arts and crafts is at the Aldevinco Shopping Center. The center is a one-stop-place for trinkets, cloths, dresses, furniture and pearls jewelry. You can also change your money there.
* Philippine Eagle Research and Nature Center, Malagos, Calinan, Davao City (45 minutes away from downtown).
* If you want to buy orchids, buy them at Puentespina Gardens and Tropical Plants (Bolcan Street in Agdao).
* The Eden Nature Park and Resort, Inc. is a must, if you visit Davao City.
* For the best view of Davao City, eat dinner at Jack’s Ridge.
* Or cap the night by listening to local bands at Matina Town Square.

Where to stay in Davao? I don’t get any commissions, but first on my list is the Marco Polo Davao City. Aside from its luxurious room amenities it has two of the top restaurants in Davao, and a cocktail lounge. You might also enjoy a good stay in Apo View Hotel, Chateau Veronica Apartelle, Grand Regal Hotel (Casino) or the Royal Mandaya Hotel.

Bear with me, but I am a serious food lover. I might be a self-proclaimed connoisseur of restaurants, but I hesitate right now and here to mention my top restaurants. Only this: try to find Picobello Italian Restaurant or the Swiss Deli in Lanang/Davao City.

Oh boy, and what I am missing since years? I miss real cultural events, such as concerts (classical and others), as I mentioned in several articles during the last ten years. I miss special stage plays and the visit of well known artists or other performances, such as TV-live-shows happening in Manila, Cebu City or Boracay. Davao City needs more support!

Anyway, yes, I love my Davao City. I feel secure and safe living here. I would never move to another place.

Virtual library seen to boost Davao’s economic potentials
Monday, 06 July 2009 00:10
PDF

by Lovely A. Carillo

THE pearly white beaches of Mati, the unexplored islands in Kopiat, Davao del Norte and the exotic wonders held by the pristine clean waters of Samal Island will soon be within the reach of your fingers.
Investors and tourists looking for information about the Davao Region can now find what they want to know without having to leave heir homes. This is made possible through the so-called “virtual library”where they can access the Internet right in the privacy and comfort of where they live or hold office.
The Davao Region Geographic Information Network, or DR-GIN, is a P5 million project that aims to strengthen the presence of the Davao Region online. It’s kilometric name aside, the virtual library helps promote local and regional development through information sharing.
“It is expected to facilitate the promotion of the region’s localities for trade, investment and tourism and cater to the needs of the private sector for business planning and research,” DR-GIN chairperson and National Economic Development Authority 11 director Maria Lourdes Lim said.
The virtual library project became official after the signing last June 23 of the a morandum of agreement between the different local executives of the Davao Region as well as the regional directors and office heads of the involved national agencies to include the Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Science and Technology, Department of Education, Department of Agriculture, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Department of Finance, National Statistical Coordination Board and NEDA among others.
Armed with geo-referenced information on the region’s business and investment prospects as well as bio-geophysical, demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, investors can easily pinpoint and decide which areas of investment they can pour their money into. The easily-available information and economic profile will provide a one-stop information center which will aid investors in their market research and business planning.
Each of the signatories, Lim said, has agreed to “provide technical expertise and financial assistance as well as contribute to the pool of information technology resources for possible linkages and utilization in the regional GIS.”
Lim said the virtual library project will specifically address issues involving data gaps, duplicating data for specific indicators and other issues that usually lead to confusion and faulty data analysis by both government and the private sector.
While there is available virtual information about the different areas of the Davao Region, these are scattered information that sometimes contain conflicting data leading to confusion among future investors and tourists. Lim said they expect to remedy this by unifying the region’s major data sources into the DR-Gin Network.
Under the project, the network of local government units, the regional offices of the national government agencies, the congressional district offices and the private sector will make available up-to-date, accurate and reliable information about the Davao Region.
With exhaustive information easily accessible to investors, the region can expect more investor interest in the region which can translate to more actual investments and tourist visits.
“Aside from facilitating the promotion of the region’s localities for trade, investment and promotion, the project will also respond to the professional and business information needs of the region’s private sector for research, business planning and investments,” Lim said.
The project will not forever be at the mercy of available government funds since they have already planned strategies for its sustainability. In the long term, DR-GIN will expand its operations and will provide other IT services for a fee such as web mail, web hosting, online advertisements, video and teleconferencing and related ECT capability trainings.

New City Commercial Corporation Selects JDA Software’s Merchandising and Store Operations Solutions

JDA ® Software Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: JDAS) today announced that New City Commercial Corporation (NCCC), a Davao City, Philippines-based mall and retail outlet developer, has selected solutions from JDA’s industry-leading Merchandising and Store Operations solutions to achieve operational efficiencies, maximize sales and satisfy consumer demand for its four malls.

With more than 30 years in the retail business, NCCC continues to grow as the corporation expands into different retail businesses and locations to better serve consumers. NCCC’s sprawling, four-story retail concourse in Davao City along MacArthur Highway provides customers with a one-stop shopping experience in a single location that includes bowling alleys, restaurants, cinemas, pharmacy, hardware, a supermarket and a department store. The first NCCC outlet still stands along Ramon Magsaysay Avenue, while two mall outlets are located in the cities of Tagum, Davao del Norte and Puerto Princesa, Palawan.

“In support of our corporate strategies and ambitious plans for expansion, NCCC assessed its supply chain processes to focus on creating an integrated, enterprise-wide platform, leveraging JDA to achieve a single view of demand and centrally managed retail operations. This will allow for a more consumer-centric merchandise and assortment strategy for all of our retail malls,” said Tjader Regis, information, communications, technology and marketing director, NCCC.

“By implementing JDA® Merchandise Management System (MMS) and JDA® Win/DSS point-of-sale (POS) solutions, NCCC will be positioned to drive market share, remain competitive, increase revenues and effectively plan for future expansions, even in light of increasing competition from national retail chains. Having one synchronized view of demand across our supply chain and the ability to execute our core merchandise management processes will improve merchandise planning and optimize inventory, as well as integrate POS, labor and customer data to support strategic and tactical processes – factors that are crucial to our retail development success in southern Mindanao and Palawan.”

Davao Doctors drafting 10-year expansion plan

http://img127.imageshack.us/img127/8/hospitale.jpg (http://img127.imageshack.us/i/hospitale.jpg/)

DAVAO CITY — Rising room occupancy rates have prompted the Davao Doctors Hospital to craft a 10-year expansion plan.

The Davao City hospital’s occupancy rates have exceeded 80%.

Francisco

Pinutos Republik: Where innovations never stop
Tuesday, July 7, 2009
By Nelson C. Bagaforo

WATERING holes abound in this congested compound called The Prime Square on Torres Street, but there's one that makes a difference.

Called MelMont's Pinutos Republik, this restaurant that serves authentic native food could be considered the "most spacious" as compared to others where chairs, tables, and patrons alike jam on peak days, especially Fridays and Saturday, because they have smaller space.

For updates from around the country, follow Sun.Star on Twitter

Pinutos even provides three function rooms. Each can accommodate 10-15 people -- good for conferences, meetings and small gatherings.

Pinutos Republik only opened last month, but it started to make a niche in the restaurant business in that part of the city.

On top of its comfortable and homey atmosphere is the food that it serves -- native food that is best, wrapped in a banana leaf with egg, as what the place is known for.

The concept, according to its chef Ian Monfort, is taken from a row of restaurants somewhere in Laguna that serve food wrapped in banana leaf. The place, he said, has been very popular among foreign and local tourists.

Pinutos Republik is the first business venture of young entrepreneur Tsuky Montillo Ortiga. Her mission is to offer comfort food in a comfortable place that is affordable to all Dabawenyos.

True enough, each of your choice of "pinutos" meals -- be it your favorite pork barbeque, adobo, binagoongan, or baby back ribs -- is priced below P50 and served with unlimited rice, hard-boiled or fried egg, and free molo soup.

"Although it's really cheaper, we do not sacrifice the quality of the food we serve. Whatever we offer is a product of long and tedious study to innovate for us to come out with quality products and services that fit the Dabawenyos," Monfort said.

Other than their pinutos meals, the restaurant also offers the tasty and tender bulalo and the pinakbet bagnet paella.

Chef Ian also introduced other items, which he created, in the restaurant menu, such as the adobong alimango sa taba ng talangka and appetizers, like prito pritata, fish fillet breaded with cashew nuts and sesame seeds, and gambas pura, a combination of gambas and tempura with chili sauce.

"We never stop innovating. We will continue to modify Dabawenyos' favorites to give them fresher taste," Chef Ian said.

The place offers bottomless rice, incidentally, and has healthy fruit shakes like green tea and fruit shakes.

And yes, there's live performing bands to entertain you on Fridays and Saturdays, which, on top of the good food, makes one feel that somehow, one has done good in patronizing the place.

Pinutos Republik is open daily, during lunch and dinner. They accept banquet and catering services.

Highway Map major tool to
sell Mindanao’s tourism hubs
BY JUDY QUIROS

The tourism sector in Davao Region is looking at the almost finished Mindanao Tourism and Transport Highway Map as a major tool in aggressively selling the region as a tourism destination.

Davao Region Tourism Council (DRTC) chair Araceli Ayuste said the map, with an estimated cost of P1 million, will be unveiled during the 4th Mindanao Travel and Tour Expo (MTTE) on August 20 to 22 at the Davao Convention and Trade Center.

Ayuste said a technical meeting to be spearheaded by DRTC and the Department of Tourism (DOT) 11 regional office will be conducted on July 18 in Cagayan for the finalization of the map.

A 3x3 meter miniature of the map will be displayed at the Davao Convention and Trade Center during the two-day MTTE and later be placed at the Mindanao Economic Development Council (MED-CO), Ayuste said.

The map is costly because it includes brochures and other data of the region’s tourism destinations. The budget is drawn from contributions from both the private sector and government, Ayuste said. She said she is optimistic the map could help boost efforts to promote the Davao Region’s tourism destinations.

The man idea of this year’s MTTE is to sell Mindanao and the map would be a great help to achieve the target, Ayuste said. DRTC and DOT 11 are working overtime in preparation for the MTTE.

The two tourism bodies are targeting to finish four roadshows in promoting the grandest exposition in southern Philippines to various regions in Mindanao.

Ayuste said the first roadshow took place on June 22 to 26 in which the team from DRTC and DOT was brought to northern and western Mindanao. The second roadshow to Caraga region was conducted last week.

The third leg will be held on July 9-10 to SOCSK-SARGEN region.

DRTC and DOT 11 has almost covered most regions and key cities in Mindanao.

Ayuste said the team has raked in a lot of confirmations from potential exhibitors from the two road shows.

The MTTE 2009 will not only be a typical exposition and showcase.

The event will also feature significant events among others, Mindanao Interactive Showcase, Mindanao Tourism and Transport Congress, Mindanao Tourism Investment Summit, Unveiling of the Mindanao Tourism Highway Map, Mindanao Wellness Tourism and Hospitality Showcase and Summit, TESDA Regional Congress, Mindanao OTOP Pasalubong Showcase, Travel Exchange, and launching of the Island-to-Highland Coffee Table Book.

Nisamot ang traffic sa matina kay mura'g nakalimtan yata nila'g plano ang parking ana.

Mejo sukwahi sa akong safety standard (kuno) kay sagad ang ilang entrance. Naa nuon sila'y parking space sa likod but come to think sa volume sa ilang customers. Hope mahimuan nila'g paagi ang ilang parkinganan oy.

Pero kudos gihapon sa centerpoint kay nindot naman tan-awon..dili na puro sidewalk vendor..hehe:cheers:

RP to get €170-M loan from French government to build modular ports
Economy
Written by VG Cabuag / Reporter
Tuesday, 07 July 2009 21:49
MANILA is set to get its loan from the French government anytime this month to build dozens of modular ports all over the country, but Malacańang will have to decide where to place these facilities.
Philippine Ports Authority general manager Oscar Sevilla said they expect the €170-million government-to-government loan, or about P11.7 billion, to be released anytime this month or in August by French bank BNP Paribas.

Sevilla said the PPA needed quick approval and disbursement of the loan as it will build an initial six ports this year, and these should be done before the election ban on government infrastructure projects that will set in by November this year.

“We have submitted to Malacańang a list of areas where we intend to build the port. It is up to them [President Arroyo] where will they place them [modular port],” Sevilla said.

He said the PPA is looking at a total of at least 72 ports that will be rolled out in the next four years.

“We have submitted the list of 66 areas which need new ports and 44 ports for improvement,” he said.

The PPA said it is the only agency that will implement the project, since the Department of Transportation and Communications is the main proponent of the loan in behalf of the Philippine government.

The provinces that were earlier identified to set up modular ports include Isabela, Aurora, Pangasinan, Quezon, Romblon, Mindoro, Cavite, Palawan, Masbate, Albay, Eastern Samar, Surigao del Norte, Davao and Cotabato.

The idea of rolling out of modular ports was hatched during the visit of President Arroyo to Spain in 2007. The loan was supposed to come from the Spanish government, in the form of official development assistance, but Sevilla said the plan fizzled out.

Most of the structures of the modular ports are made of steel and the ramp can be adjustable. It can be built within one to two months depending on the size, with each facility costing between P50 million and P150 million.

The PPA said the port can last between 30 to 50 years.

Such technology is relatively newer in the industry as only a few countries are using it, which includes Russia, Sevilla said.

“It’s cheaper because I remember our ports from JBIC [Japan Bank for International Cooperation] cost about P150 million per port,” Sevilla earlier said.

BNP Paribas opened a representative office in Manila in 1975, and two years later it became a licensed offshore banking branch.

The BNP Paribas Manila offshore branch offers a broad range of products and services to its institutional clients, including interest-rate and foreign-currency hedging, bond underwriting, loan syndication, project finance, leverage and acquisition finance, and commodity derivatives.

Its Manila branch takes full advantage of BNP Paribas’s worldwide network, the company said on its web site.
