In this photo released by the Philippine Eagle Foundation shown is a newly hatched Philippine Eagle chick at the Philippine Eagle Center in Davao city in southern Philippines on Friday December 7, 2007. Laid by one of the natural eagle pairs, Tsai and Princess Maasim, the chick is the 22nd eagle bred and hatched in captivity by the Philippine Eagle Foundation and weighs 155.9 grams.
The Center is home to 36 Philippine Eagles, 18 of which are captive-bred. It also houses 10 other species of birds, 4 species of mammals and 2 species of reptiles. Simulating a tropical rain forest environment, the Center offers the visitor a glimpse into the country’s forest ecosystem. Although the exhibits are used primarily to help educate the Filipino people on conservation, the facility is also considered a major tourist attraction in Davao City.
How to get there
The Philippine Eagle Center (PEC) is about an hour drive from the city and can be reached either by private or public transport. Buses going to Calinan depart every 15 minutes from the Annil Terminal located at corner Quirino and San Pedro Extension. Bus fare is at P30. From Calinan, take a pedicab going to the PEC. The ride is about 10 minutes and will cost you P6. Before entering the PEC premises, the Davao City Water District will collect an entrance fee of P5 for adults and P3 for kids. PEC entrance costs P50 for adults and P30 for youth, 18 years old and below. Tour guiding and the use of kiosks are free of charge.
Entrance Fees
Guests are charged a nominal fee to enter the facility. The proceeds are used to support in situ and ex situ conservation actions of the PEF.
Adults - P50
Youth (18 years old and below) - P30
Traveling time from the City Proper to Malagos
45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on traffic
Tours and Reservations
Tour guiding at the Philippine Eagle Center is free of charge. It is advisable that visitors call the PEF office and book in advance to ensure the availability of tour guides during their visit.
School groups with at least 30 students will be given a 10% discount. However, the group must have to pre-book their visit and must pay in advance at the PEF Office (see Contact Page) to avail of this offer. Family groups of 10 are also provided with the same privilege.
The Philippine Eagle Center is open from 8 in the morning until 5 in the afternoon daily, including holidays.

This activity gives the visitors an opportunity to interact with the keeper and its ward. It also helps the visitors have a deeper understanding of the bird's life cycle and environment.
Falconry.
This activity is a guarantee that visitors will never forget their trip at the Center. This time, the guests will not see the birds in their enclosures but on the air. Keepers will allow their wards to take flight to delight and impart knowledge to the viewers.

FAQ
1. What time the Davao Crocodile Park Open?
We open everyday, Monday to Sunday at 8:00 AM
2. What time the shows start?
The show start at 4:45 PM.
3. How to get there?
You can ride a taxi from downtown, it is a 10-minute ride from the city. Also you can ride the Air-condioned AllAboard Jeep from Airport to Davao Crocodile Park.
4. Why does a crocodile opens its mouth?
Alligators and crocodiles gape as a means to lower body temperature without going back into the water. They cannot stick out their tongues and pant like a dog, so they sit with their mouth propped open and it has the same effect.
Their mouth drying out from this is merely an effect of evaporation being used to cool themselves. This may aid in loosening any leeches or other parasites in their mouth, but is not the main reason.
Also, most prey items are smart enough to avoid a crocodilian with it's mouth open.
A study was conducted by the University of Florida a few years back. They made a hydraulic bitemeter and took it to the St. Augustine Alligator farm. What they found out, was that an average adult alligator giving a simple "get away from me" type bite, closes it's jaws at 2000 psi. When used on one of their largest alligators that they had really ticked off, the bitemeter broke. It was built to withstand up to 5000 psi.

The transformation of the frequently ugly or bizarre caterpillar into an elegant butterfly - is truly one of the regularly performed miracles of Nature. All butterflies have "complete metamorphosis." To grow into an adult they go through 4 stages: egg, larva, pupa and adult. Each stage has a different goal - for instance, caterpillars need to eat a lot, and adults need to reproduce

After several visits to the Island Garden City of Samal (IGACOS), I discovered a new place worthy to take a look-the Monfort Bat Sanctuary. I have heard stories about bats in Samal but who cares about them anyway? Who haven’t seen a bat? We all know and see them in movies, magazines, and occasionally see them flying at night.
My discovery about this place happened when Mrs. Norma Monfort, the owner of the Monfort Conservation Park asked the Philippine Women’s College-Fine Arts Department to partner with them in their upcoming exhibit at the SM entertainment Center this April 27-30.
After a 3-day jaunt at the Talicud Island (one of the islands in Samal) we decided to visit the nearby Babak Island to see Mrs. Monfort’s Bat Sanctuary. At the back of my mind, I thought of little cave and a number of bats but my jaw dropped when I saw a multitude of nocturnal creepy creatures hanging on the walls of the cave. I haven’t seen such a massive number of bats before! According to a scientific study conducted by Bat Conservation International based in Austin, Texas, USA, Mrs. Monfort’s Cave is home to world’s largest colony of Geoffrey’s Rousette (Rousettus Amplexicaudatus) commonly known as fruit bats. They are estimated to be around 1.8 to 2.5 million!
The Island Garden City of Samal is known for its beautiful beaches, diving spots, amiable people, and to add in the list-the amazing Monfort’s Bat Sanctuary. If you have a chance to go to Samal, don’t leave the Island without visiting the place. It’s worth the trip.

Papa's Table
IMAGINE this. You are a regular person earning a regular pay. That means that in these times, basically you are a hand-to-mouth person. You can barely survive but sometimes, not often, you get to enjoy a few things in life. Imagine that you are sitting in your workplace and you are starting to get fidgety.
The reason for it is simple: rainclouds. Grey angry clouds are forming in the sky just beyond the building you are in. And if you are correct in your geography, the clouds are forming in the vicinity of where you live.
For updates from around the country, follow Sun.Star on Twitter
And that even causes you more worry. In your experience, for some unknown reason, your neighborhood is now a certified swimming hole whenever it rains. So you are anxious to get home because you want to go home riding, not wading or swimming.
(Your new shoes do not deserve a bath, not just yet.) You stare at the clock, it is five to five. Five minutes can be a lifetime if you are waiting for the rain that you hope will never come. You hope, you pray, and you wish that it would not rain.
Your hope is dashed when at three minutes to five, it starts to drizzle. But you do not lose hope yet, after all it is a still a drizzle; and in Davao when it drizzles, it usually does not rain hard. You pray that it will not rain hard. Rain lang, wag lang hard rain. You look at the time. It is five and you can leave.
You walk slowly so that they will not notice you are eager to get out. You punch out and you step into the street. You want to go home. And then the drizzle becomes a little stronger.
You look around for a jeep but you cannot find any. In the distance there is a traffic jam. A jeep, a private vehicle, and a tricycle (one of many that have somehow appeared in our city streets) have just collided, leaving a mess of the traffic.
You cannot determine who is at fault, but you do not care because the only thing you wanna do is go home. And you search vainly for a jeep. Some jeeps pass by but they are full. You bet that these people want to go home too. They might have swimming holes for neighborhoods also.
Or worse, their houses might be right in the middle of flash floods. You look up, the clouds are hovering over you now, and the droplets have turned to drops. It is now officially raining. You curse silently. No jeeps, but there is rain.
You look into your wallet, you can still get a cab; but if you do, then instead of having bread and soup for lunch tomorrow, you will just have bread. Wala nay sabaw. You agonize. Taxi, jeep, jeep, taxi, taxi, jeep. Jeep, taxi. You finally decide, you will take the taxi. You just heard that most taxis in Davao are now aircon.
You might as well enjoy the cruise back home. Besides, the jeeps cannot and will not wade through the swimming hole that is your neighborhood. And besides, you have new shoes, you justify to yourself.
You look around for a taxi, and to your dismay, there are none that are empty. You crane your head searching for a taxi. You start to get worried because if you do not find a taxi soon, you will get home later than you want. And you want to get home because you want to watch your favorite soap opera.
You look around, still no taxi. The rain is starting to get angrier. And you curse again. You look at the traffic accident and the traffic jam is getting worse because 1) no traffic aide, 2) no police, 3) the rain is coming down like mad, 4) no discipline among drivers, and 5) a pool of water is forming right alongside the traffic accident.
Then suddenly, out of nowhere, a taxi appears. It looks empty but you hesitate to flag it down. The taxi looks old and rotten. But the rain is angry and you have no choice. You wave at the taxi and it stops in front of you.
You look at the taxi again. It looks like it had seen better days. From the outside it looks old, and kabung, kabung kagon. But you have no choice. You reach out and open the door and immediately the stink hits you.
The smell of the taxi from the inside is so bad that it staggers you a little. Mabaho talaga. Bahu kayo. But you have no choice. You step inside the taxi and to your horror it is worse inside than outside. But that is not even half of it. You still have not seen the driver. And when you do, you are wondering where you are.
The driver is dressed shabbily and he looks sweaty. Sweaty ill-dressed driver plus stinking taxi equals a hell of a drive. But no, your drive has not even begun.
You tell the driver where you want to go. He turns on the aircon, and the smell just overpowers you. You cannot open the windows because the rain is hard and so you have to endure the smell, the filth, and the ride itself. Soon, very soon, your migraine will attack.
Because there is nothing else you can do, you try to sit back and enjoy, if that is the word, the ride. You peer outside and the streets are starting to look like small shallow rivers.
People are paralyzed, people are running, people are crouched, and people are wet. Traffic comes to a standstill as undisciplined drivers try to fight for every inch of space. It is wet and it is dark. Where have all the streetlights gone?
Some of our streets used to be well-lighted but now driving through some of the streets can be likened to going inside a cave. Dark and dank and damp and wet. Plus of course you need to remember, if you need remembering that the taxi you are in seemed to have just emerged from a garbage heap. You drive on. You also start to smell.
The traffic is now a hopeless scenario. There is no one to direct the wild and undisciplined drivers. Jeep drivers weave, truck and bus drivers act like bullies. Taxis just plow through the waters. Private vehicles fight over little space.
In the distance an ambulance screeches. There are no traffic aides because no one in his or her right mind would venture into the streets. Canals and streets are now one. Water, murky water is everywhere.
And the rain is still mad. And it is dark. And you are mad. You wonder what your neighborhood looks like. You will find out soon enough. The stinking taxi has one consolation, the driver think his taxi is a banca. And you finally reach your neighborhood where the taxi driver tells you to get out. You complain, your house is still a few meters away. You look outside and the swimming hole is now a lake.
The taxi might be a banca but it is not a battleship. The driver will not go into the lake. You have no choice. You pay the driver and you take off your shoes, fold your pants, and step out. The rain is still hard, and you cringe as your feet hits the soggy earth. You wonder what things are in the water.
But you cannot think of those things. You wade across the waters hoping that you do not hit an open manhole. Konti na lang, you can see your house. You see the lights. You are drenched and the migraine has finally arrived.
By some miracle you get to the gate of your house. Your small garden is now officially a pond. You open the door and the warmth of your home hits you. Your only child rushes towards you and gives you a hug. Your wife looks at your wet, stinking self, with migraine attacking you, and asks, "Hoy, your honor, ngano dugay ka man?"

My Scene
IF YOU'RE craving for a nice slab of tender, tasty, and melt-in-your-mouth baby back ribs, take the less-traveled road when looking for a good place to eat - south of the city.
Leave the congested part of the city packed with restaurants, bars, and cafes, and keep an eye out for Trellis 'n Vines, conspicuously the only decent restaurant you can find about a kilometer after the intersection at Centrepoint.
For updates from around the country, follow Sun.Star on Twitter
Born from the passion for food of Divine Magtoto, a wisp of lass with a big love for food, Trellis 'n Vines formally opened on May 8, 2008, with a modest launching with family and friends. Over a year later, it now has regular patrons who come back for more of its lip-smacking menu.
"One segment of our clientele is foreigners from the US, Germany, and Britain, who tell us they come back for our steaks. Our customers come back because we don't cut corners. We give our diners the real deal," said Divine, referring to her restaurant's policy of using only the freshest and authentic spices and ingredients.
Looking at the mouth-watering spread before me, I knew dinner that night was going to be tasty and satisfying. We started with Garden Fresh Salad with lemon mustard vinaigrette that opened our palate, followed by hot and savory Minestrone Soup, and tender and flavorful baby back ribs whose taste can rival the best ribs you can find in the city.
I'm not a lover of hot, spicy food, but the Indian dish Chicken Biryani served with rice, mango chutney, and cucumber raita had me forking it many times until I had my own fill.
The porterhouse steak was beyond reproach: tender and scrumptious, with homemade gravy that had real flavor in it. Despite feeling full, I couldn't resist dessert: crispy Banana Peanut Roll.
Trellis 'n Vines' menu is a treasure trove of all-time favorite Filipino dishes and their special offering, Flavors of Asia, featuring delectable Thai, Japanese, Vietnamese, Indian, Indonesian, Chinese, and Korean dishes which are the specialty of their in-house chef, Jason Yusay, a Culinary Arts graduate of the International School for Culinary and Hotel Management (Iscahm).
Divine has her own degree in BS Hotel, Restaurant & Institution Management at the De La Salle University-College of St. Benilde (CSB), spending her practicum at the Makati Shangri-La's F&B department.
At Trellis, she leaves the cooking to Chef Jason, although the Filipino dishes on her menu are her concoctions borne out of her love for food and her family's love affair with it.
Divine comes from a family of foodies. Her sister Joan Reyes is skilled in whipping up baked goodies and owns Maan's Bakeshop that supplies bread to Mercury Drugstores. Another sister, Armie Royeca, runs her own string of Rolee's Bakeshops in Gen. Santos and Davao, and older brother Ram runs Enrico's Apartelle and Ram's Restaurant in Ma-a.
Trellis 'n Vines has a 130-capacity function room on the second level, and has catering services for offsite locations. It is also ideal for those who like to dine out without denting their wallets. The food prices are not only competitive, they are a real come-on.
You can have the baby back ribs for only P285, almost half the price of other restaurants downtown that offer the same fare. With the good tastes and ample servings, the rest of the menu are surprisingly very affordable: soups between P65 to P185, Filipino entrees from P65 to P185, seafood dishes from P99 to P180, Asian dishes between P89 to P198, and the steaks from P99 to P350.
After wiping the last of the peanut sauce off my dessert plate, I sat back, soaked in the homey and relaxing ambiance, and thought, 'Not bad at all.' Between the company of old friends and Trellis 'n Vines' good food, it was indeed a very pleasant dining experience.

dinabaw July 10th, 2009, 03:49 AM Five sisterhood agreements
for Davao City in the works
The realization of at least five sisterhood agreements being finalized between Davao City and other foreign cities is expected to strengthen Davao’s economy even in the face of economic recession.
“We are presently following up at least five sisterhood agreements between Davao and other cities and we expect some of these to become final before the year ends,” Councilor Rachelle Zozobrado chair of the City Council Committee on international relations, said.
These agreements, she said, do not only promote exchange visits and tourism opportunities but also investments between the two cities involved in the pact.
Zozobrado said they are in the process of finalizing the renewal or the forging of sisterhood agreements with the cities of Manado and Bitung in Indonesia, Mersin City in Turkey, Darwin City in Northern Territory, Australia, Uijeongbu City in Korea and Tacoma City in Washington, DC.
The city is confident that some of these sisterhood agreements will be renewed or forged before the year ends particularly the agreement with the cities of Manado and Bitung in Indonesia.
“We already have the additional terms requested by the Indonesia side as provided by Indonesian Consul General Lalu Malik Partawana who has recently been authorized by Indonesian officials to negotiate the sisterhood agreements between Davao and the cities of Manado and Bitung,” she said.
Davao City’s sisterhood agreement with Bitung and Manado has already expired and while the agreements are automatically renewed after expiration unless revoked by either parties, both Indonesia and Davao officials would like to introduce new provisions in the sisterhood agreement. ozobrado said, “We have prepared the terms of the new sisterhood agreement but we are still enhancing the provisions so that the resulting agreement would be a dynamic one which would really make a difference in the development of Davao City and the cities of Bitung and Manado.”
The agreement has been scheduled for first reading and is subject to the approval of the committee on international relations.
She said Davao’s sisterhood agreement with Darwin City is moving at a slower but sure pace with the visit of a contingent from the city to Darwin during last May’s Arafura Games. There is also a plan to invite the Lord Mayor to visit the city during the 2010 Araw ng Dabaw.
She said prospects for the signing of an agreement with Uijeongbu is also high considering that both Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and Uijeongbu Mayor Kim Moon Won have already signed a Letter of Intent that will pave the way for the sisterhood pact.

well afaik the Manado sisterhood provided both cities trading agreement which means opened routes both air and seas but sad thing Davao and Manado have similarity with their products and didn't take-off well. i guess the Korean & Adelaide have mopre potentials.

Mae and Carmela B. Alcantara’s Crystal Seas
Written by: Dakudao , Michael Angelo E.
Friday, 10 July 2009
DESIGN, we’re told, is increasingly a matter of economic self-preservation. It makes companies competitive and, gets economies churning and keeps whole industries of style makers feel relevant. But for Crystal Seas’ pretty, young designer, Carmaela Braceros-Alcantara, she speaks of a more fundamental truth: “I use design to protect our very own Mindanaoan being.”
“My mother, Mae Florence Braceros-Alcantara, and myself want to provide products or accessories that would answer the elements that complete a fashionable woman’s ensemble in style. More importantly, we want to promote the cherished tradition of fine handloom weaving in Mindanao and the careful discipline provided by the Mindanaoans who make them. We are focused on developing eco-friendly weaves like Tinalak, Inaul, Romblon Pandan, Kamuyot, Yakan and Balud for products that can be considered something of great value and not just as plain souvenir items. The process of weaving is painstakingly and meticulously done by native weavers whose skills have been handed down from generation to generation. It is our objective to improve and offer a fresh approach to the use of these hand-woven fabrics of life into more valuable products that more people can appreciate and use with pride.”
The young Carmaela B. Alcantara, who is armed with a Bachelor of Science in Clothing Technology degree from the University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City, is quite provocative and is always ready to face challenges and hard work in her young age to want to achieve change. Her protective business partner is her mom, Mae Florence B. Alcantara, who is forever by her side.
The Alcantara’s Crystal Seas Company was established in January, 2006, with Carmaela’s Manila-based brother, Leo Carlo B. Alcantara, as the man who facilitates suppliers and customers in Manila. The Alcantaras convinced me that they have that strong family bond for the much needed mutual respect in any dealings in a business partnership to make it thrive progressively.
Crystal Seas’ brand position in the market is that of a lifestyle company. Its main product lines for the urban customer with a particular level of demand for sophistication include bags, shawls and home accessories.
“Crystal Seas’ new collection of bags is now available at Rustan’s (Makati), Tesoro’s (Makati, Shangri-La and Alabang), and at the Kultura Store in the Mall of Asia. Last May, we released our new collection of Tinalak evening bags during the re-launch of the Kultura Store where foreign dignitaries and celebrities like Tessa Prieto-Valdes were in attendance,” informs Mother Mae.
Honestly, I am a staunch supporter of this rather shy and humble mother-and-daughter entrepreneurial team. I’ve been buying their rather pricey but exquisite products for gift giving to my socialite titas and friends. And they are always ever ready, like true professionals, to supply me with my orders. Why, I’ve even given their gorgeous hand-woven shawls personally to celebrities like lifestyle personality Tessa Prieto-Valdes whose husband Dennis Ongpin Valdes was a childhood friend during our La Salle days; and model/actress Angel Aquino who was discovered for showbiz by my dear friend and former classmate in UP Diliman, film director Jeffrey Jeturian. And I supplied them with pictures as evidence to boot; with Angel Aquino wearing the Crystal Seas shawl for the cover of M Lifestyle Magazine (vol.1, no.3). That’s how much I believe in them.
Truly, the mother-and-daughter tandem have gone a long way. Tesoros’ Philippines featured Crystal Seas’ Tinalak evening bags decorated with pearls and glass beads in the stores’ special showcase in Makati, Shangri-la and Alabang. As part of the celebration of the Philippine Heritage Month last May, Rustan’s Makati also showcased Crystal Seas’ pandan bags with Tinalak and snakeskin accents. And these are proudly Mindanao-made products.
“Traditional Mindanao hand-woven fabrics of life like Tinalak, and pandan are mixed with new materials and treatments such as beadworks and embroideries to add beauty to these valuable Mindanao handiworks. Crystal Seas aims to improve their products by experimenting with the use of different local, handcrafted materials. Currently, we are developing Tinalak with the use of natural leather like snakeskin, fish skin, cow and sheep leather. We are also expanding our product lines to fashion accessories like neckpieces using Tinalak which will soon be launched at the Kultura Store in the Mall of Asia,” details Carmaela.
In Davao, Crystal Seas’ products are available at the Alcantara’s workshop located in 90 Amethyst Street, Gem Village, Ma-a, Davao City; at the Apo View Gift Shop at the Apo View Hotel; and at the Pearl Farm Marina Boutique.
Fashion for a good cause, that’s the underlying message of Crystal Seas’ growing stylish brand. The brand with a soul helps provide jobs for the region’s lumads and barangay housewives who need extra income in these difficult times we are in.
My special greetings to Ann Tiukinhoy-Pamintuan of the Mindanao Trade Expo. Mabuhay ka Palangga!

Anyway, based sa plan dun, Mintal is for schools, tapos Sasa area is for industrial, and etc. Actually, one can get a copy sa Davao Investment Promotion Center.

Nograles turns over P39.5-M for Mindanao Heart Center
Friday, July 10, 2009
By Ben O. Tesiorna
HOUSE Speaker Prospero Nograles turned over P39.5 million to the Mindanao Heart Center as part of his P104.5-million Congressional Medical Assistance Program.
He also ordered the release of additional P16 million for the Davao Medical Center (DMC).
In a statement e-mailed by Nograles' office to Sun.Star Davao, it said the Speaker does not want to run out of funds for much needed health services, especially in light of the influenza A (H1N1) outbreak and the global financial crisis.
"The Speaker sourced the funds for this much needed world-class heart diagnostic and treatment center for Mindanao so that no Mindanaoan would need to fly to Manila for specialty heart care," said the Speaker's chief of staff and son Karlo Nograles.
The young Nograles also announced plans of purchasing a brand-new MRI machine, as well as establishing a women and child center for the DMC.
The Speaker is also working at expanding the DMC into a 1,200 bed capacity hospital and renaming it the Southern Philippines Medical Center and appropriating the necessary funds thereof.
Plans are also underway for the construction of new buildings for the Davao Mental Hospital.
"The Speaker has earmarked a total of P 104.5 million for these new projects as part of his commitment to ensuring proper medical and healthcare for the people of not just Davao City, but for the whole Mindanao," said the young Nograles.
Since 2001, Speaker Nograles, through his flagship Oplan Kalusugan, has appropriated P70 million for the Congressional Medical Assistance Program that has provided free medicines and hospital expenses to more than 50,000 beneficiaries thus far.
The first congressional district office, through the initiative of the young Nograles, has also sponsored more than 12,000 free PhilHealh cards for indigent constituents.

THE success story of Diana and Oliver Lee is tied up with their love story. For one, the couple started their business venture after being married for a year but not before engaging in their own professions—Diane as a ground crew for SilkAir and Oliver as an operations manager for a distribution company.
They had it all planned. Finish school at the Ateneo where they are batchmates, get married, start a business and have a baby. It almost seemed surreal because unlike real life the two lived their life the way they planned it to be. However, they never planned their lives to center around coffee.
Both Diana and Oliver come from business-minded families. Diane’s family is behind the Edesy brand of Bah Hoo shredded pork, fish, beef and chicken. Since her sister is already into the manufacturing side, they decided to focus on the distribution side considering Oliver’s experience in that side of the business.
“Along the way we decided to go into the distribution of food service and kitchen equipment,” Oliver said. The couple’s distribution business was financed by both their families so they formed Buyerslink Distribution Incorporated in June 2006 with the two of them as the main managers of the company.
The couple already had a diverse business product--the distribution of Bah Hoo and the food service equipment including machines for bakeries, kitchen and related equipment. It was during the Food Processing and Packaging Technology Expo when the couple met Robert Francisco, the sole distributor of Boyd Coffee in the Philippines.
Boyd Coffee Co. Philippines is a full-service coffee company that supplies not only coffee hardware like coffee beans and machines, but also coffee software to include concepts, training and service.
“He encouraged us to go into the distribution of his Espresso machines since there was still no distributor outside of Manila,” Oliver said. Diana said her husband did not like the idea at first since he wanted to focus only on one product line to avoid getting sidetracked.
The couple was finally convinced and started distributing the Astoria Espresso Coffee Machines which are imported from Italy. The machine is actually capable of preparing espresso which is the basic for all coffee mixes whether hot or cold.
The Astoria Espresso Coffee Machine SAE Junior model, which is ideal for those starting a coffee business, costs P205,000 cash. The machine comes with a complete set of equipment you need to start your coffee shop business, including one brewing group, one steam jet, one hot water spout and a built-in motor pump. You also get a grinder, Knock Box for disposing used ground coffee, steaming pitcher and a water softener.
“We do offer a very personalized service, so, if you get the Astoria machine we will also provide two-day training not only for you but also for up to 20 employees,” Oliver said. “We do everything hands-on,” he said, “so, expect our team to answer all your queries about how to operate the machine, create the blends, and we can even offer some business tips.
Oliver said there are lots of cheap machines out there, but if you want to start your business right there abd then, start with good coffee and a good coffee machine.
The couple’s entry into the coffee business can be described as highly accidental because they have never been coffee drinkers. It is only now that they have learned to appreciate the health benefits of coffee since it is an antioxidant.
But while they like to go into the coffee shop business, they do not intend to do that to avoid competing with their clients. He said the coffee shop business in the city is going great as shown by the sprouting of various coffee shops.
However, they admit that they are faced with the challenge of making potential buyers realize the value of getting an industrial coffee machine like the Astoria Espresso maker since people tend to be more price conscious than quality conscious.
“We are starting to educate the market and encouraging our clients to consider the cost effectiveness of buying quality machines like Astoria,” he said.
The Lees are planning to expand their distribution business in Cebu since there is no distributor for Astoria machines there, but that’s for the long term. In the meantime, Buyerslink or Blink Distribution is concentrating on its main business, which is the distribution of coffee shop machines and supplies, food processing equipment, packaging equipment, industrial raw materials, food service equipment and industrial cleaning agents.
If you have the time, and you want to talk business, then do so with couple Diana and Oliver Lee, over a cup of coffee.

dinabaw July 11th, 2009, 07:32 AM Blog Entry GOIN' PLACES: Crabs in a bucket
Jun 22, '09 6:31 AM
for everyone
http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/2161/img3080e.jpg (http://img25.imageshack.us/i/img3080e.jpg/)
THERE are more restaurants sprouting, so many choices, too darn difficult to choose. And so we decided in terms of proximity to where Dengdeng was; in this case, home.
Thus, the choice for the night was Pablo’s Steaks and Crabs at the rear portion of Metro Lifestyle Building right beside Antonio’s.
It was Deng’s suggestion and so I thought she’s as crazy over crabs as I am. She isn’t. Wouldn’t even dare a taste. Haynalang...
Anyway, since she can’t take crabs (and she doesn’t take all those antihistamines in order to be able to do so, as many friends I know do), then she opted for the “steaks” part of the name. But again, she knew she wouldn’t have anyone to share her food with -- she’s eating out with two people who were all set to crack those crab shells, she had to make do with Linguini Bolognese Style (that’s pasta with Angus meatballs) that’s listed under Chef’s Recommendations and goes for P375 per plate.
Kulas and I shared a bucket of crabs, a small tin pail of relatively small-ish crabs.
I wanted to explore the others, but the waitress was so-so-so I don’t know, I just ordered what I could make out as available.
This is what happened...
All I did was ask how big a medium crab was. They have three sizes: medium for P85 per 100 grams, large for P100 per 100 grams, and king crab for P120 per 100 grams. Since I know all three would definitely exceed 100 grams, I just wanted to know what the menu meant.
Her answer was straight enough, “It’s between 400-500 grams, ma’am.”
She should have stopped at that.
But she continued on to say, “But we don’t have that in stock, what we have is the bucket of crabs that’s good for two to three (at P750 per tub).”
Since she did not allow me to continue to explore how big a large crab and a king crab are, then I assumed they don’t have individual crabs. Just the tub. And so I ordered the tub.
“In olive oil and garlic, please,” I said. You get three choices for your bucket of crabs -- deep-fried, steamed, or in olive oil and garlic. Between the three, the oilive oil and garlic promised some sauce for the kanin...
We also ordered dragonfruit shake to go with our meal.
As the waitress went off, another waiter passes by bringing a big crab on a plate.
“That must have been the last individual crab,” I thought.
I thought wrong, another plate came out several minutes later. Hmmm...
Anyway, it didn’t take long for our orders to arrive and we just tucked everything in. Me, cracking the shell and separating the meat, piling this up on my plate. While Kulas was busily cracking and eating.
He was already asking for a second cup of rice and yet I haven’t started yet, still busy cracking shells and separating the meat.
I started enjoying my crabmeat as Deng took a break halfway through her huge pasta meal.
Our dragonfruit shake was a deep fuschia that tasted like... something mush and sweet.
Deng’s meatballs were okay, although a bit too well-done. While the crabs were good, except that there was just too little sauce for the kanin.
Over-all verdicts? Relatively good food but on the pricey side.
The total bill was around P1,800-plus (that three orders of hot tea) for the three of us, just around P600-plus per person, much like a buffet dinner in a posh place.http://saestremera.multiply.com/Sun.Star Davao, May 24, 200

MtApoStandard July 12th, 2009, 10:08 AM Five sisterhood agreements
for Davao City in the works

HAVE you ever paid notice to the fast and exciting changes happening around you lately? Yes, it's fast and yes they're all here -- businesses, shopping malls, call centers and the list could go on. But what do they all have in common? Jobs.
Let us begin with the basics. They say it takes a lot of sacrifice and hard work to land a good job these days. The latter may be true but to sacrifice need not necessarily be the case.
For updates from around the country, follow Sun.Star on Twitter
Why go to Manila or even to Cebu to work in a call center when you already have more than ten in Davao to choose from? What happens now is that you have to see things the way conglomerates see it? Invest here and invest in your own person.
Personal investment, this is the more traditional term for what we call an "upgrade" nowadays. That is, increasing your market value and improving your credentials. This does not only apply to fresh graduates but also to professionals who may be deciding on a promotion, a career shift or even just for personal progress.
Businesses who have managed to thrive despite the apparent economic turmoil have done so because they have diversified their approach and made intelligent decisions that made their companies stronger and even more in demand to the public.
And since the investors have this much belief and confidence in the talent pool of Davao and Mindanao, it should only be right for the "gold" in the "goldmine" to meet them halfway. Allow us to give you an example of one company who has chosen not Manila, not Cebu, but Davao City to invest and open a training facility that will give the Mindanaoans an opportunity to experience upstanding and unparalleled service.
Synnex-Concentrix Corporation recently opened its training center in Davao called Concentrix Institute (CXI). This newly opened facility in Damosa IT Park, Lanang is the newest division of Concentrix Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of SYNNEX Corporation a Fortune 500 company and leading business process service provider in the world.
Concentrix Institute aims to deliver quality branded and value-added education, workshops, skills training and seminars via its Center for the English Language, Center for Technical Knowledge and Development and Center for Leadership and Management.
Learning is their advocacy and dream for anyone and everyone interested to gain personal and career empowerment that will enable the common job-seeker to compete in the national and global market.
Concentrix Institute also serves as the community’s vital link for knowledge outsourcing through its provision of an affordable and convenient alternative venue and source for management workshops and seminars that are normally held in Manila or overseas that does not sacrifice the quality and professionalism of the material delivery, facility preparedness and availability of qualified speakers and facilitators.
Visitors are also prided to a tour of their new and modern facilities and state of the art amenities. You may reach Concentrix Institute via their direct line at 235-5097 to 99, mobile number 0908.880.9056 or email your inquiries to ci_info@concentrix.com.

New Wakeboarding Park In Davao City

Opening a the end of July is a new wakeboarding park in Davao City. The Deco Wakeboarding Park is the largest wakeboarding park in South East Asia, with reportedly seven hectares of wakeboarding lake.
Located in Barangay Mintal, Davao City, the Deca Wakeboarding Park is the latest project of Chris Tan’s Xtreme Wake Inc. Chris Tan and Sherilyn Reyes have been coincidentally promoting the sport of wakeboarding for some time now and their ability to attract sufficient investment for this wakeboarding park in Davao City (and a similar facility in Clark / Angeles City, Pampanga) indicates a resilient tourist based economy, founded on adventure sports and water sports . . . two things the Philippines as a whole is ideally placed to become the Asian leader in.
With the addition of this new wakeboarding park in Davao City, and the next one slated for completion in September 2009 (to open in October) in Clark / Angeles City, Pampanga, the Philippines will be able to offer no less than four, first class, year round, wakeboarding locations for water sports enthusiasts.
- Camarines Wakeboarding Center (Naga City, Camarines Sur)
- Lago de Oro Cable Park (Calatagan, Batangas)
- Deca Wakeboarding Park (Mintal, Davao)
- Clark Wakeboard Park (Clark / Angeles City, Pampanga)
If you add to this the mobile wakeboarding facility offered by Stoked Inc. of Calatagan, Batangas, and the fact that three quarters of the wakeboarding parks are within 30 minutes of an airport then there is no reason for anyone to say that it is too difficult to go wakeboarding in the Philippines.
The message is clear, 2009 is a great year to GetWet wakeboarding in the Philippines.

Well, this is like Shoppers'Dugmart or Pharmaplus in Toronto similar to Mercury Drugmart in MM.
A dazzling city eh?
I wonder about this city to become like highly urbanized with NCCC as one of the indicators of progress in the south & north ends. I like the way NCCC is penetrating the districtsides with heavy foot traffic. Let's support this store.
I wish there would be another highways that will connect west and east ends to make this city greater. "Greater Davao" like gta-greater toronto area.

Peng Hok July 13th, 2009, 08:35 AM Consunji firm sets 15-yr. plan for Davao lands
DAVAO CITY — DMCI Urban Property Developers, Inc. has set a 15-year development plan for its properties in the city.
Leonora P. Gutierrez, company area manager, said the Consunji family has decided to convert a significant part of its landholdings in the city, estimated to be several thousand hectares, into residential subdivisions.
Ms. Gutierrez said among those that would be covered is a 400-hectare farm in Baracatan, Toril, located at the southern point of the city, which is currently producing mango and durian for Sodaco Agricultural Corp., the Consunji family’s agribusiness company in the Davao region.
Ms. Gutierrez said, however, portions of the orchards would be maintained for both production and attraction as part of the subdivision projects. "The company still has so many properties to develop within the next 15 years," she said.
Recently, the company started to develop a 50-hectare durian farm in Calinan, 30 minutes from the city proper. In that project, the company will use the durian plantation as an attraction considering that the Calinan property will be a high-end subdivision, Ms. Gutierrez said.
The company already has a number of residential projects here, among them Ecoland and the Juna subdivisions just outside the city’s central business district.
Teolulo T. Pasawa, the Trade and Industry department’s city director, said property development has been a major investment destination in Davao for the past three years. Mr. Pasawa added the market "has been responsive to new projects despite the global crisis."
"Those with money seem to be buying properties now with the goal of unloading them when the global market stabilizes," he said. Several other applications have been submitted to the agency for scrutiny and eventual approval, he said, without disclosing details on the projects.
DMCI Urban Property Developers has started its second condominium project in this city, located just across the city government offices. The company also hopes to start next year another condominium project outside the city proper, specifically in Ma-a district.
Another DMCI project, a 30-hectare subdivision in Shrine Hills, has been delayed after residents protested that the project would trigger landslides and floods.

Peng Hok July 13th, 2009, 08:56 AM Igacos resort boom marks tourism sector’s resiliency
by RG Alama
AN increase in the number of resorts in the Island Garden City of Samal is a mark of resilience that characterizes the tourism sector in Davao.
According to Araceli Ayuste, president of the Davao Region Tourism Council and proprietor of the Punta del Sol resort in Samal, said that from 20 resorts in Samal Island in 2007, there are at least 40 resorts in 2009, with more being developed.
Ayuste said that tourism in Davao is not affected by the global financial crisis judging by the tourism activities in the region. She said that even if you go to the hotels in Davao City, they are almost always fully-booked as conventions and lakbay-arals are being held here.
She added that the growth in tourism activities has encouraged many resort owners in Samal to become active asmemebsr of the Samal Island Davao Resort Owners Association or SIDROA. In the past, resort owners were hesitant to join, but with the upsurge in tourism, many are now joining because it benefits their businesses.
The group has about 40 member-resorts from the Triple A to the uncategorized. Of the number, about 25 resort-members are active in Sidroa. Together they are pushing for the region to position and promote itself, particularly as an island destination.
One tourism activity Ayuste is pushing together with technical diver Carlos Munda is diving. Currently, Samal has three resorts with diving facilities -- Pearl Farm, Paradise and Ayuste’s Punta del Sol.
Munda, the only certified technical diver in Mindanao, said what is hindering the growth of the diving business here is the lack of diving tourists. About 95% of the divers are locals from Davao City while 5% are tourists.
Unlike in Anilao and Puerto Galera, where 90% of the divers are tourists spending about P6,000 to P10,000 each per weekend. He said that aside from boat rentals, tanks, food and accommodations, these tourists employ guides that generate local employment unlike local divers who are familiar with the place and spend lesser than tourists.
According to Ayuste, diving tourists would spend about P3, 000 per weekend in Davao, while local divers spend about P2, 000. Punta del Sol averages about 50 divers during weekends. She says Samal has around 17 dive sites.
Munda also points out that Igacos has no dive resort yet. These are resorts that cater only to divers and wouldn’t delve into other amenities. These resorts he says are not capital intensive and hence fit for Igacos’ community-based tourism enterprises.
Diving, he said is not about corals as divers also want to find big fishes and sea “critters” in different underwater environments. The current diving mania today Munda says is muck diving, which is diving done in muddy or mucky waters.
Muck dive sites harbor exotic and unusual organisms that live in the sediment and which make for great underwater photography subjects. [PIA]

New Wakeboarding Park In Davao City

Wakeboarding_Philippines

MtApoStandard July 13th, 2009, 05:53 PM H1N1 machine to arrive soon
THE much needed machine that will identify patients suffering from influenza A (H1N1) virus in just two days will soon arrive in Davao City.
The machine will facilitate for a much faster release of the result on swab tests taken on suspected cases of the virus in the Davao Region.
For updates from around the country, follow Sun.Star on Twitter
Davao Medical Center chief Dr. Leopoldo Vega said last week that the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) machine will expedite the result from the usual four days to two days.
At present, the swab samples taken here in the region are transported to the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine in Metro Manila for testing, thus the delay on the release of the result.
RITM officials have already coordinated with DMC officials for the setup of the A (H1N1) testing center at the DMC.
It was learned that RITM will train some DMC staff on how to operate the machine.
DMC has recorded a total of 30 A (H1N1) positive cases in Eastern Mindanao as of Monday, 26 of whom are from Davao City. (BOT)

MtApoStandard July 13th, 2009, 06:26 PM Old Davao airport terminal to be used for food cargo
DAVAO CITY — The office of the Department of Agriculture in the Davao Region will start using the old Davao airport terminal in Sasa, some 10 kilometers from the city proper, as a food cargo facility before the end of the year.
Rogelio C. Chio, Agriculture regional director, said President Gloria M. Arroyo will lead the inauguration of the new facility this September this year.
"This is a purely government effort [for now]," he said, adding that his office is willing to dialogue with the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. for its possible participation in this project.
Davao chamber’s proposal
Davao chamber president Simeon P. Marfori had earlier said that the organization was interested in a tie-up for the feasibility study for the terminal’s conversion to handle food cargo instead.
He said the chamber has been trying to meet with Agriculture officials since two months ago, when Secretary Arthur C. Yap first brought up the proposal when a trade mission from Saudi Arabia visited the city.
"They [the Davao chamber] should make clear when they want the dialogue held," Mr. Chio said in an interview.
The old Davao airport terminal began operating 60 years ago.
It was mothballed when the new airport terminal was inaugurated on December 2, 2003.
During the 8th Davao City Business Conference in July last year, the Davao chamber presented to Vice-Mayor Sara Z. Duterte a resolution to convince national officials to develop the old airport terminal into a cargo and trade center.
Councilor Peter T. Laviña, chairman of the city council’s committee on trade and commerce, said the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines is willing to listen to any proposal on how to utilize the old airport facility as long as the city will earn revenues from its new use.
A better option?
He argued that, more than a cargo hub, the most viable plan would be to convert the old airport terminal into a business process outsourcing (BPO) facility.
"What remained of the old airport terminal was just a shell and that’s all the BPO locators need; they will just refurbish the structure," he said.
There were originally six to seven proposals for the old Davao airport terminal, including a BPO center, an aviation school, a cargo logistics and trade center.
Bert P. Barriga, Jr., vice-president of the Davao ICT Council, projected an income of P70 million over the next five years once a call center locates at the old airport terminal, paying rent of just P250 per square meter, which is at least 40% less than the rate prevailing in Metro Manila. — Joel B. Escovilla

- P25 billion plus invested in property development
- Thousands of professionals and skilled workers employed

INVESTMENTS in the billion of pesos continue to pour into the Davao region to develop real property, seemingly oblivious to the raging world economic turmoil.
Big developers
Many of the Philippines’ premiere developers are now in the region pursuing some of the biggest projects ever seen in this part of the country. Most of the projects are in Davao City and the other cities around the Davao Gulf -- the Island Garden City of Samal, Panabo and Tagum, the latter three in Davao del Norte, the most progressive of the four Davao provinces.
The big developers, a number of whose projects have been completed and now enjoying brisk sales or are sold out, in alphabetical order, are Ayala Land, Camella Communities, DMCI, Filinvest, Landco, Metro Pacific, Robinsons, SM Investments and Santa Lucia Realty.
Local capitalists
The local investors, made up chiefly of the landed gentry, the nouveau riche, the homegrown developers and grizzled businessmen who have made a fortune in various other businesses, are very much in the fray -- either in joint ventures with sleek out-of-towners or on their own using internally-generated resources or borrowed funds.
The locals who have joined the big league – a few of them known for their conservative style of doing business in the past – are the Alcantaras (Northcrest, Woodridge, Fernwood), Damosa Land of the Floirendos (Abreeza, Damosa Gateway, Playa Azalea), the Bangayans (Ocean View and Linmarr Towers), the Tagum Doctors Hospital group (Samal Highlands), the Dizons (Riverfront Corporate City, Crocodile Farm), the Gaisanos, the Lims (NCCC Group), the Yaps (Felcris, Chimes and Convenience Stores), the Uys (Dimdi Group), the children of Kisan Lu (Amiya Resort Residences), Devin Uraya (Urayaland), Henry Lopez Chua (Chula Vista) and the Villa-Abrille heirs.
The projects
The property developers are into building malls, medium rise condominiums, high-end subdivisions, residential resorts, beach resorts, contact centers and other buildings for business process outsourcing centers and hotels. One, Samal Highlands, is developing a 50-hectare property into an island resort with a medical tower, beachfront hotel, and extreme sports facilities, preserving the existing mangroves and mango orchards. Holiday Oceanview Samal of the Bangayans is described as “village, town villas, resort, island spa, marina.”
Easily, all the properties being developed in the Davao area are worth more than P25 billion according to estimates of local business writers who have extensively covered this beat.
According to Carmelito Q. Francisco, managing and business editor of the Mindanao Times who also writes for Business World, thousands of engineers, architects and skilled construction workers have been absorbed by this vibrant sector through direct employment and involvement in secondary businesses.
Why invest in Davao?
“Out-of-town investors are also impressed by the ideal business climate in Davao City and neighboring cities,” said writer Prix Banzon, who has devoted the last five years covering the business beat.
Jerry Navarrete, president of one of the residential and commercial companies of the group of Manny Villar, confirmed Ms. Banzon’s report.
Aside from being one of the most dynamic cities in the Philippines, Navarrete said it is so easy to establish a real estate venture in Davao.
“Bureacratic red tape is non-existent, the rules are clear in the city,” Navarrete said who takes pride in the fact that the Villar group (Camella Communities) is a pioneer in vertical (condominiums) development. Camella is currently building Northpoint, a cluster of condomiums near the Dakudao-Buhangin flyover north of the city hall.
Tristan las Marias, Filinvest vice president for Visayas and Mindanao operations, told a media forum earlier here that his company is into several property projects to “provide prospective buyers a wide array of choices when the economy gets better.”
Aside from Filinvest’s seven low and high-end projects in the region, Las Marias said the company is embarking on two new projects to take shape before the year ends.
He also bared that Filinvest’s One Oasis, a seven-building condominium project beside SM City Davao is “enjoying brisk sales.”
Agatha Ellen S. Valencia, Davao chapter president of the United Architects of the Philippines, said the local property market has remained in good shape, despite the fact that overseas Filipino workers have slowed down in their buying due to retrenchments in their ranks.
Meanwhile, Henry L. Yap, Robinsons Land Corp. vice president for design and planning, told business reporters during the opening of Robinsons Cybergate, a P350-million mixed-use facility in Bajada last month, the company is still looking for more areas in the city and nearby localities to develop.
The quality of manpower needed by new business locators has been identified as a plus factor for Davao City, according to Lizabel “Wit” Holganza, president of ICT Davao, Inc.
City does its share
Local government units (LGUs) are also doing their share in making their localities more investor-friendly.
The city government of Davao, for instance, is currently pursuing the following multi-million-peso projects to improve vital services to its constituents, including business establishments:
Sanitary Landfill Project P265M Urban Drainage and Flood Control Project P250M Traffic Signalization Project P266M Shelter and Urban Land Reform Project P100M

Isn't this near the old Lyric and Crest theatres?
I'm dating myself but Lyric is where I saw the Bruce Lee movies. :ohno::)
Back then Men Seng charged P50 a day for a room.
I was back in Davao last August. A friend of mine who was from Manila and I drove around. He was promoting the Villar Cup billiard event.
I told him, " pare pansin mo, downtown dito pero ala tambak?"
I hope the new hotel does well.
Yeah, the hotel does good. I knew it becoz I've stayed in that hotel last summer. Upon checking in, I heard only 3 rooms was available. So I think, malakas ang hatak ng MY HOTEL. . Lucky am I that I've check in early. hehe...
More of that, I've got a nice room and a comfortable bed but I don't get a chance to sleep with my bed on the night kasi ng barhopping ako... hehe... :)This hotel is in great location... You don't have to ride a taxi to go to night spots. Rizal promenade is a walking distance. In this area, you can see many bars and restaurants. The place is safe for gimik... Bumalik lang ako sa hotel madaling araw na,,, so tulog agad ako. Napakacomfortable ng bed, unlike other hotels that Ive been staying before na masakit sa likod ang bed or sometimes, hindi ka makahinga sa sobrang lambot.
What I liked most of this hotel, is their FREE WiFi access in room and FREE call to US.
Try this hotel and you will Love this hotel... Promize...

DAVAO CITY — The office of the Department of Agriculture in the Davao Region will start using the old Davao airport terminal in Sasa, some 10 kilometers from the city proper, as a food cargo facility before the end of the year.

the government can make it as a domestic airport and then the new one will be the iternational terminal...but then the international traffic in davao isnt that enough to be given a separate terminal..maybe soon...:)

dinabaw July 15th, 2009, 03:06 AM Consunji firm sets 15-yr. plan for Davao lands
DMCI Urban Property Developers is the Consunji group’s arm for realty projects in the provinces, with projects in Naga, Bataan, and Davao. — Carmelito Q. Francisco

A(H1N1) test center
DAVAO CITY - Health secretary Francisco Duque announced yesterday plans of turning Davao Medical Center as the newest H1N1 testing center like the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM).
This he said in his visit in Davao City yesterday for the DOH-ARMM Health Assembly and AIPH launching ceremony held at the Waterfront Insular Hotel.
“We are still building the capacity of DMC but the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) machine will arrive in Davao a week or two from now.” he said.
He explained that there is a necessity for establishing a center here so suspected H1N1 cases will immediately have their tests done in the city and have the results as soon as possible.
With the current set-up, patients need to wait for the results for several days after undergoing swab testing. All of the laboratory testing are done in RITM.
Duque said that with increasing number of confirmed H1N1 cases, the government is indeed pushed to invest on facilities that would provide quick results for quick medication of patients.
DOH currently has five machines installed nationwide. There are two PCR in RITM, one in San Lazaro Hospital, one in Vicente Sotto Hospital, and one in Baguio .
DMC would be the fifth testing center capable of handle H1N1 testing.
Davao Medical Center chief Dr. Leopoldo Vega said that some experts in RITM will train some staff in the DMC and teach them how to handle and operate the PCR. PIA 11/Mai Gevera

Kadayawan 2009 to be memorable
by RG Alama
Davao City (15 July) -- All systems are go for the 2009 staging of the Kadayawan Festival in Davao, which is touted as the festival of all festivals.
Patricia Ruvivar secretariat of the Kadayawan Festival Steering committee has said that no less than City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has stressed that he wants to make this Kadayawan as the most memorable, since this is the last Kadayawan before his term of office ends.
The festival will carry the theme, Naghiusang katawhan, nakigdagit sa Kalibutan" (One People in communion with the earth) and will this August 17 to 23.
Carrying out to become a memorable festival, Kadayawan will be done in two components; one component is the Lumadnong Kasaulogan (Indigenized Peoples Festival) and the other part is the Subay sa Lumadnong Kagikan (Indigenized Peoples Celebration).
The purpose of the two components is that aside from being a major tourist attraction, it recognizes that Kadayawan is a festival that celebrates the city's indigenous peoples, its diverse cultures, and its unique arts and crafts and where it is mindful of the indigenous peoples' need to assert their rights to self determination and cultural preservation while peacefully co-existing with the city's migrant settlers.
The Festival will open on August 17 with an event called Duhwow Davao at the Agro Field. Major events include Tunog Mindanaw (World Music Festival), Moda Mindanao (Fashion competition), Hulagway sa Kaliwatan (visual arts exhbit), Sayaw Mindanaw, Tugtugan sa Kahiusan (Mindanao Indigenous Music Festival), Indak-indak sa Kadalanan and the much anticipated Pamulak sa Kadayawan (floral float competition).
According to Ruvivar, despite the global financial crisis, the festival has not been downgraded as the festival budget from last year of P15-million has not been changed. They are also expecting strong private sector support for the festival.
City Tourism Operations Officer Bong Aportadera said that they are monitoring for erring tourism establishments since this will be the time when many tourists will come. He said he expects high standards from these establishments particularly on hygiene, cleanliness and service as their sustained efforts to promote Davao City will go in vain if these establishments are not up to par.
Aside from tourists, the City is also preparing to accommodate an influx of indigenous people who are invited to showcase their culture and traditions among the residents and visitors.
Ruvivar also said that the Chinese community will also participate in the Kadayawan as various events like night markets are marked inside Davao Chinatown during the duration of the festival.
She said that Kadayawan will show that Davao is a unique place since it has the highest concentration of a diverse cultural group which is fully integrated into a cosmopolitan and multicultural city. (PIA XI) [top]

MtApoStandard July 15th, 2009, 06:43 PM Mindanao to have flu testing center
DAVAO CITY — Mindanao would have its first A(H1N1) testing center at the Davao Medical Center within two weeks, Health Secretary Francisco T. Duque III said during a visit here on Tuesday.
Mr. Duque said the central government would be building the capacity of the Davao Medical Center starting with the arrival of a polymerase chain reaction machine that could determine positive A(H1N1) cases.
The machine is currently installed at the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) in Muntinlupa City, San Lazaro Hospital in Manila, Vicente Sotto Medical Memorial Center in Cebu City and Baguio General Hospital.
Dr. Leopoldo J. Vega, Davao Medical Center chief, said RITM experts would visit to train local staff in operating the machine as well as handling A(H1N1) cases.
Mr. Duque said establishing a testing center in Mindanao is urgent considering the increasing number of suspected A(H1N1) cases in the island.
For months now, swab samples from suspected swine flu cases from Mindanao had to be sent to Metro Manila with the results sent back only after a week or two. In most cases, the patients stayed in hospital isolation rooms for up to two weeks only to realize they were suffering from common influenza.
Based on reports last month, there were over a dozen positive cases monitored at the Davao and Northern Mindanao regions alone. All patients, regional Health officials claimed, have fully recovered even with some subjected only to treatment at home under the guidance of government doctors. No transmission of the flu to other patients was reported in the two regions.
Meanwhile, the Department of Labor and Employment yesterday clarified that hospitalization benefits for workers infected by A(H1N1) would come from the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth), and not from the department.
In a statement, Labor Secretary Marianito D. Roque said infected health workers would be able to avail of as much as P150,000 in hospitalization benefits on top of company benefits.
Non-health workers may avail of as much as P75,000 worth of similar benefits from PhilHealth as well as sickness benefits from the Social Security System.
The Department of Health on Monday said there are 2,668 confirmed cases of the virus, including three deaths, since May 21.

Davao Scuba Diving, Philippines – The New Muck Diving Destination
by Chris on July 14, 2009
Despite having a feast of great muck diving, Davao Gulf in the Southern Philippines has remained largely off the dive map. All that could be about to change.

If you were asked to picture what an emerging macro diving destination looks like, chances are you’d be thinking of somewhere remote and uninhabited, a Lost Eden island in the middle of nowhere. But less than 30 minutes boat trip from the huge city port of Davao on the southern Philippines island of Mindanao lies a plethora of spectacular small critters that will have macro enthusiasts grinning with delight. While locals have been diving in Davao’s waters for years, there has only been a trickle of foreign divers visiting up to now. It’s still an undiscovered dive destination in both senses - there are exploratory trips being carried out by local dive company Wind And Wave each month to explore further along Davao Gulf’s miles of coastline as it rolls out to the ocean.
Davao lies at the apex of Davao Gulf, a huge V-shaped swathe of flat calm water that eventually opens out into the Celebes sea. The Gulf is sheltered from typhoons thanks to being surrounded by a ring of mountains, crowned by Mount Apo, the highest peak in the Philippines. Within the Gulf itself, and just across the water from the Davao city, lies the large island of Samal, which creates a natural channel between itself and the mainland and harbours virtually all of Davao’s dive sites. Unlike the mainland, Samal remains largely undeveloped besides one luxury hotel resort, Pearl Farm. The rest of the island features the thickly set palm trees and fringing white beaches for which the Philippines are famous. It’s hard to believe it’s only a few minutes boat ride away from the traffic clogged streets of Davao. Local fishermen paddle tiny one man outriggers up and down the shore as they go about their daily catch, and the occasional container ship heading in for the port is still dwarfed by the sheer size of the Gulf. And all the while, Mount Apo looms overhead catching clouds amongst the bright blue sky. It’s not a bad view at all from the dive boat.
Davao’s 20 plus dive sites are situated in clusters around the Pearl Farm resort and Samal’s three smaller sister islands, Ligid, Malipano and Talicud, as well as scattered along the coast of Samal itself. It quickly became clear from our first few dives that if you want gin clear water and big pelagics, you’ll probably be disappointed by Davao diving. While sailfish, dolphins. dugongs and even whale sharks have been occasionally spotted by local fishermen along the coast of Davao Gulf, they’re rarely seen by divers. The water can be turbid and silty, giving an average viz of around 10 metres, and there’s the occasional strong current which can signal the beginning of an impromptu drift dive. But for adventurous divers who aren’t bothered by less than postcard perfect conditions, Davao provides some fantastic opportunities.
Kaputian is a dive site in point. Dropping in at dusk, it seemed an unprepossessing flat gentle slope of small rocks, with patches of sand and sea grass. Within seconds I was mesmerized by the cowfish that seemed almost as taken with me, backing away slowly but keeping its gaze firmly fixed on me as I had a quiet grin about its cute big eyes and horns. When the cowfish had finally had enough of me, I’d only moved a few more metres before encountering the frozen profile of a reptilian eel, looking like an ornate bottle buried in the sand. More dynamic was the tiny bright blue bobtail squid that resembled a minature cuttlefish, which I only left alone when one of the guides started arcing his torch in a gentle circle to illuminate the graceful seahorse he’d found, some 8 inches or so long.
We had split up into two groups to maximize our spotting time, and there was a flurry of excitement from the other group as they stumbled across one of the holy grails of macro diving: a clown frogfish. This tiny creature, panstick white with a huge red stripe running through it just like its namesake, was almost wholly buried amongst the small rock chunks that make up the slope. Our guide Ricci was all smiles when he got out the water as it was the first time he’d ever seen one, let alone found one – even more impressive given it was a night dive!
As we headed back to Davao that night, it was already decided we’d go back in search of the clown frogfish. Instead, we subsequently encountered a harlequin shrimp in all its polka dotted finery and a pair of Pegasus. We dived Kaputian three times in all and it felt like a different site each time and that there was something not only new but quite special too.

Besides the fine muck diving along Samal’s coastline, Ligid and Talicud, two of the islands just off Samal, provide impressive coral landscapes with teeming fish populations. Big Ligid and Little Ligid are located around the other side of Samal on the north eastern tip. Little Ligid is a private island that’s available to rent by the day if you’re feeling particularly decadent. Big Ligid is one of Davao’s signature sites and provides the best chance of seeing roving pelagics like packs of barracuda and whitetip sharks riding the currents, which also improves the viz.
The island’s craggy limestone walls provide a scenic backdrop topped with dense foliage above water, while underneath the surface the ocean has hollowed out a fascinating cave in Ligid’s wall and a pinnacle off its furthest point. The vertical wall drops at around 20 metres and the cave is a large triangular gap at its base. The cave repaid our curious torchlit investigation of its floor with some vibrant nudibranches. Ligid’s wall itself is quite breathtaking – the vivid golds of the clouds of fish hovering over emerald green coral with random spots of bright pink and red look like the work of some aquatic graffiti artist, a stunning and slightly overwhelming mix of colours and textures. Seeing a full sized black and white banded sea snake gracefully sidewind across this landscape provided the final touch to a great dive.
Mushroom Rock at the other end of Samal is also a local favourite, a collection of sites with steep walls dropping to 30 metres completely suffused with a neverending tumble of soft corals whose fronds reach out from their vertical incline. It’s comparable to Mansud Wall, on Samal’s other small island Talicud. Both provide the perfect conditions for an exhilarating drift dive. The abundance of soft coral on Mansud’s vertical wall which has a plateau at around 12 metres and then continues down is breathtaking, perfect for hanging in the current and simply taking it all in. The fish life is also abundant here, with plenty of clownfish and the usual reef suspects, along with a ghostpipefish which seemingly materialized out of nowhere, so good was its camouflage.
Mansud’s two neighbouring sites are very different – Coral Garden is a slightly murky coral patch that provided fantastic photo ops of jawfish peering suspiciously at us from their vertical hideyholes. There is an abundance of the always noteworthy spearing and peacock mantis shrimp in Davao Gulf as well – we spotted them on several dives, lurking amongst rocks and coral and, in one instance, defiantly standing out in the middle of the pebbles and facing us down. Babu Santa was particularly good for spotting mantis shrimp, another ugly looking site of scrubby vegetation on white sand that revealed playful pairs of puffafish cavorting wide-eyed around us, leading the way to the highlight of this dive and a first for me - a clown snake eel, much smaller than the reptilian eel and its crazy paving camouflage making it look a little less sinister. Even the trash on this site (Talicud island is a popular place for Davao partygoers) had become home to glass shrimp peering out of the neck of a discarded beer bottle.
Right by the Pearl Farm resort are the tiny islands of Malipano, on which are built the owner’s quite stunning array of beach houses. Two WWII era Japanese wrecks lie directly in front of the resort in murky conditions that make them only of interest to wreck enthusiasts. Besides seeing another seasnake racing across the deck of one wreck, we also encountered the biggest lionfish I have ever seen, nearly a foot across, only rivaled by the giant puffafish that hoved into view during our following dive at Bing’s Corner.
Bing’s is a site on Malipano island that encapsulates Davao diving in a way, with a contrasting mix of big, expansive reef and tiny creatures. It’s an excellent wall dive with a spectacular carpet of soft corals, lots of fronds and fans meshing in with one another, with a strong drift current in places too. The viz was a little silty but that didn’t really matter. Amongst the explosions of coral growth we went looking for pygmy seahorses in one of the immense scarlet gorgonian fans jutting out from the wall – we had no luck this time round, but the giant puffafish was a consolation, as was the plethora of nudibranches we found along the way, with no less than five vivid green and red nudibranches grouped together (easily identified post-dive as chromodoris nembrata).
When you add up the beauty of Davao’s natural surroundings above water with the fascinating array of critters under the surface, the ease with which you can visit the city and get to the dive sites as well, the convenience of having big city luxury nearby, and the genuine pride and excitement the dive guides have in Davao in showing off what is still a largely undiscovered dive destination, Davao has got a lot going for it. It may never be a chart topper like Palau or Sulawesi, but Davao has its own unique dive charm.
Thanks to: Albert and all the team at Wind And Wave Davao for organising a great trip in Davao. And to Carlos, for the cheese.

tj_brewed July 16th, 2009, 04:16 PM Robinsons readies new P5-b bonds
Source (http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/?page=business4_july16_2009)
By Jenniffer B. Austria
Robinsons Land Corp. of the Gokongwei group plans to issue P5 billion worth of bonds, its second offering this year, to fund its capital expenditure program.
Robinsons Land said in a disclosure to the stock exchange that would issue fixed rate bonds of P3 billion with an oversubscription option for an additional P2 billion.
Similar to the recently completed P5-billion bond offering, Robinsons Land has appointed The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corp. Ltd. and SB Capital Investment Corp. as joint issue managers.
Joint lead managers are BDO Capital and Investment Corp., BPI Capital Corp., The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corp. and SB Capital Investment.
Early this month, the company issued P5 billion in retail bonds, which received substantial demand from retail and institutional investors.
The retail bonds, which carried a yield of 8.50 percent per annum and a tenor of five-year and one day, were more than four times oversubscribed.
The real estate firm this year is spending P8 billion in capital expenditure, primarily for the construction of new malls, office buildings, residential condominiums and hotels.
Robinsons Land this year will open five shopping malls in Pulilan, Tagaytay, Davao, Tacloban and General Santos.
By the end of its fiscal year in September, the company hopes to have a total of 26 shopping malls nationwide.
Robinsons Land will also launch five residential condominiums, namely the second residential tower of Sonata Private Residences in Ortigas, the second tower of Trion Towers in Fort Bonifacio, the first twin tower project in Makati, additional buildings in Woodsville near Bicutan and the first tower within the recently acquired 5.2-hectare property housing the famous Magnolia house on Aurora Boulevard.

Two big call centers coming to Davao City
Two big call centers from Metro Manila are coming to Davao City this year, ICT-Davao Board adviser Andrei Fournier said yesterday.
Speaking to reporters in yesterday’s Club 888 Forum at The Marco Polo, Davao, Fournier said the investments come at a time when Davao City has been ranked fourth in the list of the ten top ICT destinations in the Philippines.
Fournier, however, declined to identify the call centers but hinted that they are among the 20 top ICT players in the country currently operating in the Ayala Center and Robinsons Cybergate Towers in Manila.
He said in all probability, the two call centers will locate either at the P3.5 billion Abreeza Mall, the first Ayala center in Mindanao, or at the Robinsons Cybergate Davao.
The Ayala group is currently building a P2.3-billion BPO complex in the Abreeza Mall that will have a floor area of 20,000 square meters. The BPO building will have five levels with 10,000 square meters allocated for call center operations.
The first BPO building will be operational on the fourth quarter of 2009. The 61,000 square meter mall will open on the fourth quarter of 2010 and the second BPO building is targeted on the fourth quarter of 2011.
Fournier said the big call centers will locate in Davao City during the last quarter of this year.
The top ICT players in the country include Accenture, Sykes Asia, Cybergate, e-Telecare.
At present, call centers and other BPO services have generated 60,000 jobs in Davao City.
According to a study made by the Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT) and Business Processing Association of the Philippines (BPAP), Davao City ranks only behind Ortigas ranked first, Cebu City, and Makati City in the list of the ten top ICT destinations in the Philippines.
ICT-Davao is targeting to double next year or at least hit its magic number of 100,000 jobs, Fournier said.
The current number of jobs created in Davao City’s IT sector is about 10 percent of the 650,000 IT jobs created nationwide, Fournier said.
Fournier also said hitting the number four rank should not be a reason for complacency among the ICT players.
“Even if we are number four as an ICT destination, chances of being dislodged is very big if we do not address current problems facing the industry,” he said.
The problems needed to be addressed are manpower, infrastructure, and broadband connection.
Fournier said there is a need to train more middle-man managers to improve the quality performance of the call center agents and other personnel in general. There is also a need to acquire adequate infrastructure for more power supply to damage control the consequences during majore power outages. Finally, there is a need to establish new infrastructure to have more broadband connections.
The IT industry throughout the country is growing by leaps and bounds, hitting $4.5 billion in sales as of December 2008.

MtApoStandard July 16th, 2009, 06:46 PM Sisterhood pact with Manado to cover ICT
INFORMATION and Communication Technology is one area that will most probably be covered under the sisterhood agreement between Davao City and Manado in Indonesia.
"We have almost completed the necessary amendments for the renewal of the sisterhood agreement between Davao and Manado, and this time it will include a lot of areas including ICT," Councilor Rachel Zozobrado said.
For updates from around the country, follow Sun.Star on Twitter
Zozobrado, who is City Council committee on international relations chair, said Davao is becoming a favorite outsourcing destination and so the city should start developing its linkages with other cities and countries when it comes to information technology.
"We will be able to benefit from the experiences of other countries when it comes to the development of technology, and the best way to do this is through the inclusion of technology in our agreements," she said.
The sisterhood agreement between the two cities intends to forge a partnership between Davao and Manado. Both cities can learn from each other's strengths and weaknesses whether in ICT or in other areas.
Mindanao has already formed linkages with Manado of Indonesia through the Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines-East Asean Growth Area or BIMP. However, the sisterhood agreement is specific between the two cities of Davao and Manado and is expected to earmark the common resources between the two cities including ICT.
Zozobrado said the traditional areas of cooperation among cities like the development of trade and commerce, education and tourism still exists and will be included in the sisterhood agreement. However, she added, we need to infuse new ideas to catch up with what is actually happening in the world.
"We cannot deny that Davao is a strong contender when it comes to being a Business Process Outsourcing destination, and we should explore that in agreements with our sister cities," she said. (PR)

Govt's anti-red tape campaign gains ground with business licensing automation
DAVAO CITY, Jul 14, 2009 (Asia Pulse Data Source via COMTEX) -- The government's goal of lessening if not eradicating red tape in government operations has gained a stronger ground with the partial automation of Davao City's business license application process.
Lawyer Lucky Siegfred Balleque, National Economic Research and Business Assistance Center (NERBAC) Davao OIC-Center Manager, said the automation of the business license application process will make it easier for sole proprietors and domestic corporations to apply for and have their business licenses approved online.
Balleque said this will also improve the present 140 rank of the Philippines in terms of the ease of doing business in the country.
This is Davao City's first effort to automate the process of applying for a business license and is a prelude to the establishment of the Philippine Business Registry which will make virtually all transaction available online, he said.
The process was created by virtue of Republic Act 7470 to support the government?s campaign against red tape or government bureaucracy. It is now being operated in Davao and in other regions in the country.
The NERBAC Unified Form is an innovative approach to simplify the business registration process,? he said.
The form is a multi-page electronic document in Adode PDF form that allows business license applicants to download the form from the internet, fill up the details, save it and then print it. The set contains the necessary forms required by a business license applicant including forms for the local government, PAG-IBIG, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), PhilHealth and Social Security System (SSS).
The only problem is that the NERBAC Unified Form is not equipped with a Submit Form button yet so the applicants would have to just print their applications and then submit the documents personally at the specific offices.
Balleque said the Unified Form will reduce the transaction costs for both the government and the client but until such time the Submit Form button is activated the applicants will have to submit their forms in the offices.
However, he said once the Submit Form button is in place the applicant can submit the data electronically.
This will ultimately eliminate the need for the applicants to go to the concerned government office since a data server will collect the data and route the documents to the concerned offices, he added.

GMA: From Egypt to Davao for “Zero Basura” caravan
by MindaNews
Friday, 17 July 2009
DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/17 July) – From the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Leaders Summit in Egypt, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo flew straight to this city for the Zero Basura Caravan at the Waterfront Insular hotel here.
Some 175 mayors and other officials from Regions 11, 12, and the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) are attending the caravan “that seeks the active participation of local government units (LGUs) in the country’s anti-climate change program,” the Office of the Press Secretary said.
During the program, Ms Arroyo will be given a briefing “on the output of the nationwide caravan starting last April that has tremendously increased LGU participation in establishing materials recovery facilities (MRFs) and other anti-climate change programs such as turning open dumpsites into ecological parks.”
Zero Basura is a “sequenced intensive, information, education campaign nationwide to cascade key environmental programs and strengthening LGU-government partnership under the Ecologica
l Solid Waste Management Act of 2000,” the OPS said. (MindaNews)
