Davao City's 911 is world class and that's the fact! And the best and most hightech system in the country. It's the one and only in the country that uses Electronic Computer Aided Dispatch System to pinpoint the exact location of the emergency. It's the only emergency number in the entire archipelago which got its own 24-hour dedicated operators and CALL CENTER....

But ei, kahit naman sa US, hindi naman 100% perfect ang 911! At hindi lahat ng mga emergencies at victims nila na nairerescue guaranteed na mabubuhay!

ok ...we failed sa isang victim......BUT LOOK AT THE STATS AND THE HUNDREDS OF LIVES SAVED BY 911 BELOW!

may 911 ba sa barangay nyo? or upto now hanggang barangay tanod pa lang? o kaya 117? uhmmmm manong police, need help po and after 48 years dadating na ang police! or pakipick-up nga nung directory...hanap tayo ng ibang numbers......DUH!

...(well atleast sa Davao may 117 na may 911 pa!)

She died....I feel sorry for her and her family......BUT DONT PUT THE BLAME ON 911! haller!

^^ OT: lena aka scandinavian_girl is that you in your avatar? she's so beautiful.

@Junex here it is...
A VIDEO obtained by ABS-CBN Davao showed University of Southeastern Philippines (Usep) student Cheryl Sarate being engulfed by fire during the school's beauty pageant.

The clip shown at the network's news program showed Sarate in her costume made of cotton and plastic while parading on the stage along with other contestants of the pageant.

The video showed Sarate's gown catching fire as she passed by a candle placed at the side of the elevated stage.

Within a fraction of a second, the video showed Sarate falling off the stage already engulfed by fire while spectators scampered to safety.

Few people were brave enough to try to put off the fire that enveloped the student but their attempt seemed to have just fanned the blaze more.

The video showed no one getting a fire extinguisher, which is a must in every edifice especially in learning institutions like Usep.

Investigation showed that there was no available fire extinguisher inside the hall where
the pageant was held.

To make matters worse, the host of the pageant even advised the crowd that the show will resume in 20 minutes clearly unaware of the gravity of the incident.

Sarate's mother could not help but cry while watching the video clip of her daughter's gruesome moment.

The mother vowed to file charges against the pageant's organizers and the school administration.

The city's Bureau of Fire and Protection earlier said organizers violated the fire code, which requires organizers to get a permit for the use of any open flame like a candle in any public occasion.

City fire marshal Rico Neil Kwan Tiu said names of the organizers were already submitted to their office. It was however learned that these were only students' names and no faculty member or school officials were included in the organizers' list.

The school administration meanwhile said it is ready to face any charges that would arise out of the incident.

no 911 fault here....

la lang. highlight ko lang.

tj, unsa naa sa imo plans for the upcoming kadayawan meet?

yes this is a thread, yes this is a forum. while try as we may to post relevant topics on davao's development, this is also a place for dabawenyos to say hello and goodbye. agree with you rajah that we need to be tolerant. what's the point to be too black & white? while we may be o.t. ocassionally or ok most of the time, this is also what makes this thread alive. otherwise, just imagine this, all reporting and never knowing who the reporter will be a bore. the "chatroom feel" for me is welcome, because this puts a human face and feel to a virtual community.

don't forget, we are already a community. then let's a put "human" feel to an "i.t.

very well, carry on.

until people here stop giving the thread a "chatroom" feel, this thread wont be sticky. the forum has a P.M. system specifically for statements not related with the thread and for your private "conversations" :runaway:

i was really horrified with the news about the girl who got burned alive in a beauty pageant, a very sad news, her mom was interviewed by one network and she was very angry at the slow response of your supposedly "world-class" 911.

id rather have a non sticky thread with a chatroom feel if it enhances the camaraderie of members, than a sticky thread that is too formal and stiff....

if you have seen the video..or if you were at the scene..you would know that even the most world class 911 wont be able to help the poor girl..her costume lit up in seconds..and 911 is only as good as the quickness of the emergency call they receive...

besides, how efficient is the worlds "best" emergency response team anyway?

most can respond within 5 minutes but it depends on the location and the situation. ever read of a teenage driver in u.s. who bump into something full of honey bees? well, as the paramedic have said, we're trained to look for a car that crashed, but a million bees?

davao's 911 is a few years old, expect some bumps, bruises and crashes along the way. but i just hope not a million bees.

I am really appalled by the fact that USEP did not have fire extinguishers in that hall or anywhere near the stage! It has been my experience as an owner of business establishments in the city that agents of the Fire Department would conduct periodic inspection of my facilities' fire extinguishing devices. If you are missing one, the fines are heavy. What happened to the inspection in this case? USEP should be held liable along with the organizers who violated the fire code.

Hi Lena,

You know how your summers are where you are, right? Well, tropical weather is much the same with the humidity. The one thing nice in Davao is that rainfall is pretty much consistent. So, you may have a blazing hot day then in the middle of the afternoon you may get rains that tend to cool things down for the evening and nightime activities -whatever that may be. :) The other thing in Davao is that there is always a breeze.....

Thank you a nice description that make me able to "see" the weather in Davao. The breeze sounds nice....that is what I am used to daily on this scandinavian peninsula. Sweden usually has a dry climate especially in the summertime. Sounds to me like it is plesant in Davao, hot and cooler within a 24 h periode of time...:) The humidity might be the harder part to get used to...I will need alot of :booze: <-----water :)

Councilors' convention to bring in cash: Danny

COUNCILOR Danilo C. Dayanghirang sees the holding of the Philippine Councilors Leagu 6th Mindanao Island Congress here as not only a venue to show off Davao City but as an event that will send cash registers of shops, bars, and restaurants ringing.

More so since some of the moneyed councilors might even opt to extend their stay so they can witness the Kadayawan Festival.

The congress is scheduled on August 10-12 at the NCCC Mall. The Kadayawan Festival highlights are from August 16-20.

Dayanghirang, who chairs the convention, said the City Government has allotted P400,000 for the event.

He said with 1,600 city and municipal councilors who have committed to participate in the convention, the city's investment will not only triple as return of investments will be in millions for the city.

"The city's tourism industry will greatly benefit from the holding of the convention here in the city and will earn millions," Dayanghirang said in an interview during the Kapehan sa Royal Mandaya press conference Thursday.

He said hotels will be fully booked and restaurants and entertainment centers will be teeming with customers.

"Actually, we really intended it to be near the Kadayawan Festival so that they can extend their visit in the city in time for the celebration," Dayanghirang said. (BRQ)

Re: 911

One weekend when a drunk ran amok in my neighborhood, i quickly dialed 911 and lo and behold, in less than 5 minutes, the police officers came and dumped the intoxicated man in the van.

I inquired why the fast response and learned that these highly-trained 911 crew is stationed in every barangay police sub-offices which are scattered around the big city of Davao. Latest count of high-tech police cars was 44. (?) So there you go.

Ledesma: My fire trees and Angie Reyes fancy
By Jun Ledesma
Sunburst

AT THE onset of the martial law regime, Marcos issued an edict requiring every one to plant a tree or trees.

In obeisance to what looks like a noble cause, we guys at the RMN-IBC (dxDC-TV13) took time out and armed with shovels and bolos trooped to Dumoy near Toril.

It was fun actually, especially when we found out that aside from us there were hundreds of eager participants lining up the roadside of what was then a narrow and deteriorating asphalt highway.

By myself, I planted 12 fire trees, the Bureau of Forestry called them. BOF provided the seedlings and we were told that this variety was fast growing and that sooner than we expected the fire trees would come to bloom with fiery red flowers!

True enough the seedlings grew quickly although many had died after these were gorged by loose goats, cows, and carabaos, which were commonplace then.

Later, those that matured and truly bore enchanting red flowers eventually gave way to the road widening and firewood. Up north of Davao City tree planting activities were also done.

I am sure that commuters between Tagum and Davao City had seen those trees including those sturdy pine trees that survived the elements. Eventually, however, they disappeared and I suspect that most of these went to furniture shops. In more recent times, Neem trees were planted by the roadsides but they have to be pruned or cut down because they have become veritable hazards as the branches are reaching for the high-voltage electric cables.

We lost those valuable acacia trees at the junction of C.M. Recto and Magsaysay Avenues (precisely why that part of the city was called Acacia), and for one stupid reason or another, the century old acacia fronting the SSS building vanished.

The huge trunks were cut to sizes and am certain that they were consigned to furniture shops. The only old acacia trees that survive our proclivity to just easily eliminate trees that are deemed profitless are the ones in the yard of the Victorio family and Philamlife along Rizal Street.

In Singapore, the main highways and their botanical gardens are lined with acacia trees, which came from the Philippines. I was told that in some parks they planted San Ramon coconuts. These are sturdy and tall varieties found in Zamboanga, which bear huge nuts as big, if not bigger, than basketballs. In fact, most of the other tree varieties and shrubs you find in their botanical gardens came from Mindanao.

Why did I stray to these pastoral reminiscences? It's because I think that the well-meaning Sec. Angie Reyes is wasting efforts in his equally bucolic dream of seeing a ribbon of trees lining up the highway from Lebak to Aparri. I would rather that he focuses on reforestation of denuded concessions and conservation of our remaining rain forests and corporate tree farming. Leave the beautification aspects to local governments and civic organizations.

Secretary Reyes might also want to have a look at our successful eco-tourism projects. His colleague, the OPAP secretary, Jess Dureza, years back, leased an area in Lorega, Quezon in Bukidon. This used to be a badly denuded area. Today his modest mountain resort, which is supervised by his wife Beth is teeming with thousands of maturing pine trees. His neighbors there have followed suit and presently most of the areas awarded for eco-tourism is abundant with trees.

Of course, my favorite subject when it comes to eco-tourism is Eden Nature Park for that is the first testament of how barren lands can be resuscitated. Eighty hectares of cogon land now a luxuriant forestland of pine trees and mahogany and a dry creek coming to life anew.

Regional Development Council chairman Chito Ayala should invite Secretary Reyes and take him to a walk under the sweet smelling pines, which are becoming extinct in Baguio City. If he has not seen up close giant mahogany trees, then proceed to the winding walk path along the now rippling creek.

For there he will see how man can resuscitate the dead and create a forest. If Angie tires, he can take a dip in a pool from where he can appreciate the panoramic view of Davao City and the gulf.

If he is hungry he can fancy catching an angel fish with a hook and line and then have this cooked, broiled or pinaputok or fried, under his watchful eye.

So forget those trees by the highway. They will not even grow to proximate your fancy for the saplings might just be uprooted before you finish your term.

And, like most of the fire trees that I planted in the days of my youth, lay wasted by the roadside or end up in somebody's kalan. Come to think of it, that might be the reason why they are called fire trees.

Jude, the singers are from Davao. The guy in glasses is Rebel Magdagasang-an ADDU Glee Club alumnus member. He composed this song Mindanao. He is popular now in the Philippine music industry. He composed the song that won in the ABS CBN spearheaded nationwide song writing competition last year interpreted by the rising chanteuse Yasmin Kurdi.

I don't think it right to blame 911 for what happened to the student. I think the blame should be on the school administrators. And the organizers.

If there is any gov't agency that is accountable, it should be the fire dept / bureau for not have properly checked the fire safety of the school. If indeed they did not inspect the school properly.

Sorry i lost track of who is now manning the ADDU Glee. There's been a lot of interested music virtuosos from inside the school willing to do the job but somehow all these didn't pan out. When I left Davao it was Christian (forgot his last name) who did a labor of love and they mustered to stage some off base and local concerts. Interestingly, Rebel was also in the sidelines pitching in -as well out of love for the glee.

Years ago there was a plan hatched by the alumni members to put together an alumni ADDU Glee. Everyone was willing to take part but work was the hindrance. We manage though to do several numbers in show produced by the then incumbents. And that was it.

You have what I got-Lactose Intolerance. (lol) When you eat something laden with lactose whatch out, you'd be struck with diarrhea. When diarrhea comes, you'd feel the world is crashing down on you. That happened to me a couple of weeks ago. I was pigging out on persian food (of course in a persian hosted party) capped with ice cream, ice choco bar and tea. I could not refuse the ice cream so as not to embarrass the super nice hosts. Then the expected happened.

Good news to me now though is I have Digesta - a drug for indigestion which I can take before or during meals. Thanks to my new employer. Sorry for the advertisement!

OT: I was in Calgary last Thursday for a one day hop. Nice ang place. Naa Dad nimo didto Gravy di ba? Naa pud ko friends from Davao kaya lang super busy ko pag-abot. Good thing though is the lunch we had in a place called Mario's which is big in Calgary. They serve Italian food. Medyo layo lang sa downtown Calgary.

Sure I will give your regards to Teng. Coincidentally we or they (sila lang kay gi-try na nako gahapon kay naa ko sa area) will try (this weekend, whew! thanks for the long weekend, again) the new restaurant of Sandy Daza (he has a cooking show in local Phil TV) here in Vancouver.

OT: Re: Sandy's Cuisine.
The place is squeaky clean including the washroom (at least for men) but there's nothing to rave about its interior design. Just the typical Filipino restos around. Yes, Sandy is now based in Vancouver and he does the till in his resto aside from being the souz chef.

They went home to Davao (butangan nato ug Davao para dili daw chatty style..lol) last May (for real ni ha) and Denise didn't wanna come back to Canada. She liked the beaches of course. Teng went shopping at Chimes and she raved about havaianas slippers.(?) It's so big in Davao she said.

No, but my grandfathers neighbor was one of the gradeschoolers in the all boys school era. I am much more younger. :D

Nice photo comparison. You should also post it in the Then and Now thread Raja! :)

Murdered or custom-built?
By Stella A. Estremera
Spider's Web

WE'VE laughed about it and most often would be caught discussing the queer tongue we speak, always with pride, unconsciously manifesting that pride of belonging to that race that we can't even figure what, called Dabawenyo.

The purist will say, not one of us is a Dabawenyo because the Dabawenyos are the natives and they speak an entirely different dialect. The stubborn Dabawenyo that we are, however, would readily argue. Oh yeah the lumads -- Bagobo, Manobo, Ata-Manobo, Ubo-Manobo, Guiangan, Tagabawa, Tagakaolo, Ubo-Bagobo, Bagobo-Clata, Mandaya, and put in some Sama -- by then the purist will be overwhelmed. The lumads will say there are distinct dialects for each but while these are different, they can still understand each other. And thus there is the general dialect some refer to as "Dinabaw", a queer dialect that crosses lumad territories and is understood by all.

And now the Tagalogs and Bisaya of Davao have taken the same route.

Born and bred in Davao City in the olden days when there was still an invisible line dividing the Bisaya from the Tagalog and the Bisaya from the lumads, I grew up speaking in the tongue my mom spoke -- Tagalog straight from Paete, Laguna. I knew a smattering of Visayan words that in those days were necessary so that you can be understood by the househelp and the "maglalako."

As the Visayans made more inroads into the city, the smattering became whole sentences, then paragraphs. There's one problem though...

These are whole sentences and paragraphs of Visayan words as we thought them to be. And that's far different from the Visayan words as they are and should be.

And thus, I now declare myself a true-blue Dabawenyo. That peculiar breed of Filipinos who has a penchant for murdering both Visayan and Tagalog into an unrecognizable mass that allows us to recognize a Dabawenyo among a clutch of Bisaya and Tagalog folks.

It was just recently though that I realized the murder spree continues. That was after I noticed a word that kept popping out in raw copies of reporters using direct quotes from sources. The word: "biskin."

I get the drift, of course, it's just that I couldn't figure out where it came from. I listened closely to television news where local officials speaking in "Bisaya" are being interviewed and realized that yes, they do utter a word that sounds like "biskin."

"Where did this word come from?" the already confused brain cells who can't figure out whether they're using Visayan or Tagalog asked.

I shared my befuddlement with a Cebuana friend, Mich, who became as befuddled as I was.

"Where did that word come from?" she asked.

It was only after she left when I realized something "queer" in how she talked... she never used the word "maski" and what my friends and I thought was the Visayan derivative: "maskin."

Rewind, over a decade ago with friends from elementary to high school and college who speak Tagalog. Our conversations were either in Tagalog or English, then we would proudly shift to Bisaya when addressing those who talked to us in Bisaya. We felt pretty multilingual then.

Among the Visayan words we often used (we still use it in fact) was what we thought of as Visayan equivalent of "maski" -- "maskin."

Actually it's the Tagalog word "maski" as in "maski papaano," "maski ano," "maski sino". But when speaking in our murdered Visayan, we used to say "maski na unsaon," maski na unsa," "maski na kinsa" that we (and apparently the whole lot of Davao-born halfbreeds) later contracted to "maskin".

When we're our Tagalog selves, we say "maski" but when we shift to Visayan we say "maskin," and feel really cool about it. Like, "Galing ko noh? Kabalo lagi ko magbisaya 'ba."

And then "biskin"... and the day my Cebuano friend left for Cebu during which I finally noticed the missing "maski/maskin" in her conversations. There's no trace at all, but there is a word that she uses often that means exactly the same... "bisan."

"Bisan unsaon", "bisan asa", "bisan kinsa", and the chips fell in place.

Apparently, in the Dabawenyo's murder spree of the Visayan language, somebody corrected him about his "maskin" and said it should be "bisan". Having used "maskin" for so long in his murdered Visayan tongue, the language-murdering Dabawenyos ended up contracting both the correct "bisan" and his old "maskin" and voila! The word "biskin."

* * * * *

On our trip to the mountains during my Cebuana friend's visit, we were preparing to sleep. Mich was spreading the bed sheets, while I was seated on the bed, opening up my sleeping bag.

"Barog sa diha, Stella," I heard her say.

I sat up straight.

"Barog sa ba," she said.

I looked at her. She looked at me like I was dense or something. I simply had to ask, "Unsa nang barog?"

The following morning at breakfast, my buddy Kublai was all set to eat, occupying a long bench at the small table of Manang Delia's house, which we were squatting in to prepare and eat our food in.

"Barog sa diha, Kubs, aron matarong nato ang bangko," Mich said.

Kublai looks up, still hauling food into his mouth and munching. "Unsa nang barog?" he asked.

Both Kublai and I believe we speak Bisaya...

* * * * *

Postscript: Our lumads did that before; they "custom-built" a dialect that crosses territories and are generally understood by all. Apparently, in this part of the world where people welcome everyone and everyone wants to belong, the modus is to be understood. It's not about what you speak or how you speak it. It's all about understanding and being understood. And that's what makes us uniquely Dabawenyo.

that was what I'm suggesting...kahit "sub-title" lang e.g. CM. Recto (Claveria), etc....hindi na makakalimutan ng mga taga davao ang original names..and many still prefer to use the old names di ba....magallanes, trading, acacia, ....etc..

claveria for CM Recto, Uyanguren for Magsaysay Ave., Ponciano, Torres, Father Selga St., Artiaga, together with unadulterated names like Ilustre, Bonifacio, Bolton, Dacudao, R. Castillo, sta. Ana, Monteverde, Sales, San Pedro, Legaspi, etc., etc.

I think trading is in the new Mabini along Quezon Blvd. and Carpenter is in Agdao north of the east entrance of the Agdao Vehicular Flyover if I'm not mistaken. It's actually a waterfront area.

hmmm the temporal indices are quite revealing....okay...duran duran, madonna and spandau ballet were my favorites way back then........i wear my sunglasses at night was a hit when I was a freshman ... the second time I was a freshman was in 1995 iba na ang uso back street boys na (pero in pa rin ako sa mga batch kong mga bagets dito ):hahaha: and I am batch 2000 of a foreign university, batch 2002 of my post-masteral and hopefully batch 2006 for my phd. so ... estimate mo na kung ilan edad ko/namin?

yeah spandau ballet's "Gold", Duran-Duran's "Wild Boys". "Sunglasses at Night" was sung by a canadian Corey Heart. Those were the days.

no monument here but , i guess sa heidelberg, and there is this Rizalgasse along the river rhein (?) named after him....

I'll send you some pix per PM...weyyyyyt plsss.

oki doki! Thanks for the clarification. My friend was twitted by the Germans.

I remember "chef" too. I think I was there with Davy, William, Manny Bondoc, Benjie, Dan and Maricle with our batchmates na sila Carlos, Gerald, Junjun, Claudy and Noli Sabas. Williams fave was "Love without Time" and he sung it with perfect baritone. That's why he crosses my mind each time I sing that piece. Si Jojo Alejo pala was always there as well and he liked singing "Gold" in his husky tenor. Davy and I would do a duet of "Be My Lady" kay unsaun man kay maka Martin man pud ko. LOL.

I think this is Nestle's experimental coffee farm in Tagum City. Have you seen Tweety De Leon's Nescafe TV commercial? It was shot entirely in Tagum by no less than homegrown filmmaker (and soon-to-be Hollywood) Yam Laranas, a product of Davao City High School Class of '85.

Hey, I'm back.

Annie Lennox was with Eurythmix. I remember their "Sweet Dreams" - very catchy. I have a brand new Brian Adams album called Anthology, it's a must have for his fans. By the way, Brian Adams is a Vancouverite. He used to wash dishes in a restaurant in Burnaby- a greater Vancouver area city east of Vancouver City. Sarah Mclachlan is also a certified Vancouverite. I know him because I also graduated from City High, 2 years ahead of him. Born in Davao City, finished grade school at RMC (but spent kinder to Grade 5 at St. Mary's College, Tagum), studied briefly at ICC (now UIC), studied briefly at UP College of Fine Arts, rejected by UP College of Mass Communication but became a speaker years after, and is the only ADMU communications instructor (film) without a college degree. He is a pure-blooded, panatikong Dabawenyo. For more info, check his blog. I'm also a fan.

Ano na kaya ginawa nila sa off-road racing track didto noh? murag kang Dizon man yata gihapon to. I watched one off road car racing event kasi one of my good friends was a member of Eagles Off -road club of Davao and off course don ako nanood sa magandang area kung san nandoon si ruffa gutierrez and dawn zulueta. Natameme ako don. pero hindi naman ako starstruck at saka si dawn kasi madalas ko makasabay sa Marco Polo gym kaya parang ala lang.
