MANILA, Philippines — Traditional music enthusiasts, music students, people who are interested in Japanese culture, and Japanese residents in Davao are all invited to experience the most prominent feature of Okinawan culture—the music played by a Japanese cultural envoy from Okinawa, Japan.

Shinjin Kise, a Japanese Cultural Ambassador appointed by the Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japan, will show the precious Okinawan musical tradition of Sanshin at a workshop on August 11 and a recital on August 12 at the Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai International School in Lanang, Davao City, said the Japanese embassy in Manila in a statement.

Kise is regarded as a living national treasure in Japan because of his dedication to a career in teaching Sanshin, a three-stringed musical instrument from Japan’s southernmost prefecture Okinawa which is related to the Chinese instrument Sanxian and the predecessor of the Japanese Shamisen.

Kise is a Master of Nomura and Tansui Style Ryuukyu Classical Music and is a member of Kumiodori (Okinawan Traditional musical/song-dance theatrical genre) Ensemble considered as an intangible cultural property duly recognized by the Government of Japan. He is also an advocate of the restoration of Uzagaki, the imperial court music of the Ryukyu Kingdom which reigned in Okinawa during ancient times.

Before visiting Davao City, Kise already conducted or will be conducting musical workshops in Manila at the University of Santo Tomas Conservatory of Music (August 3 and 4), Philippine Women’s University Conservatory of Music (August 5 and 6), and F. Torres High School (August 10).

He also performed in Baguio City on August 8 and after Davao, on August 14 he is set to perform at the Penguin Café and Gallery at Malate, Manila in collaboration with the Philippine Women’s University Guitar Ensemble & the Gongs of Philippine Women’s University.

Anybody interested is invited to participate in the workshop and recital to be conducted by Kise in Davao City. Admission for both the workshop and performance is free. For further inquiries, please call the Japan Foundation Manila at telephone numbers 811-6155 to 58 or visit JFM’s website at www.jfmo.org.ph.

Davao City BPOs eye global marketing of city as premier tourist site
Wednesday, 05 August 2009 19:51

DAVAO CITY—The association of business process outsourcing (BPO) companies here has firmed up plans to launch a global marketing blitz beginning next month to draw more BPO companies to this city, only recently ranked fourth among areas in the country preferred for BPO operations.

Eriberto Barriga, vice president for external affairs of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT)-Davao City, said a committee would be formed to finalize the plan to send a team to Singapore and selected cities in Australia and some countries in Europe.

He said Dubai was taken out from the target areas “because that city also shifted position and invited instead BPO locators to their area.”

“We are already preparing ourselves to go into a marketing of the city as a premier destination of BPOs not only in the Philippines, but also in the world,” he said.

He said the world continues to host a huge market for BPO companies seeking relocation to other countries from their current host countries, including India. Barriga said the existing BPOs operating here have high accolades for the city.

Right now, companies like US firms Sutherland and Concentrix Corp. have already prepared expansion programs and would hire 2,000 more employees. Sutherland, currently with 1,000 seats filled, would hire 1,500 more, while Concentrix plans to hire 500 more.

The others, like Western Watts, Cyber City and Call Box, have also reported robust income on their Davao City operation.

The city’s BPOs have hired 6,000 employees in the call or voice centers, and another 800 to 1,000 employees are into nonvoice operations such as medical transcription, software development, legal and finance, and accounting.

About 16 big to small operations are into the call-center business, and 32 others are engaged in nonvoice BPO.

Barriga said two more foreign big companies are set to put up office and field operations here this year. One of the companies already has one Manila office.

Barriga said the marketing work abroad would become a regular activity of the ICT-Davao City.

The organization has rued the lack of interest of some Davao City officials, including councilors.

For several years already, the organization has lobbied for an ordinance or official policy that would grant expanded incentives to investors, including those in the BPO sector. For the BPO industry, he said additional incentives would include granting discounts and another set of incentives if the operators would expand their operations to hire double their capacity.

“It would be an added incentive, actually a major incentive, if the city government would allocate a piece of land to be developed by the private sector,” he said.

Barriga said the land would be developed into an IT park to enable companies to enjoy investor incentives.

He said the BPO association would agree to be given a site in Mintal, about 15 kilometers northwest of downtown Davao City, “because this is suitable, being situated in the area where the good schools are found.”

The University of the Philippines campus in Mindanao is found here, including the Mindanao campus of the Philippine Science High School.

The city produces an average of 15,000 graduates, many of them recognized as quality products.

“The Ateneo de Davao University, for instance, is producing more than 20 programmers. Where are they, but getting out of the city to be hired by other companies?” he said.

“What we may do is to gather them here and find the market abroad. The operations would be done here in the city so they don’t have to go out,” he said.

ICT officials here also estimated a high percentage of call and other contact centers coming from this city.

More buyers confirm participation to MTE

AT LEAST 50 institutional buyers from Manila and other parts of the country have already confirmed participation to the Mindanao Trade Expo (MTE) 2009 slated August 13-15 at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas building in Davao City.

This is in addition to 30 companies from Cebu City, which earlier assured to join the trade exposition.

In an interview with Sun.Star Davao, Ann T. Pamintuan, MTE 2009 chair, said that a wide array of opportunities are provided for the 100 exhibitors considering that the visiting buyers have varied preferences and interests.

"Some buyers are interested on the finished products that will be showcased but some might be more interested to enter into agreements wherein certain Mindanao entrepreneurs will provide them with raw materials," Pamintuan said, adding that all visitors to the trade expo are "potential business partners and markets."

Moreover, exhibitors and visitors will be given the opportunity to get the best business ideas and product development suggestions as they consult with international product designers who will be present during the event.

"These designers will be available for on-the-spot consultation with those who are interested to get their insights on how to improve their products. These designers can recommend to them the latest designs which the global trading arena is looking for," Pamintuan said.

A trend seminar by world-renowned designers will likewise be conducted.

"We can't deny the fact that in a world where there is a very stiff competition, only those who are highly competitive would stand out. Therefore, we have to produce the best products for us to continuously enjoy success in the business," Pamintuan added.

The MTE 2009 chair also cited that consultants on food business will be also around to give sound advises to local entrepreneurs.

The MTE 2009 is supported by the Philippine Exporters Confederation Inc. (PhilExport) Southern Mindanao, and is being sponsored by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Department of Agriculture (DA), Export Development Council (EDC), City Government of Davao, Apo View Hotel, and Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program.

Traders vie for buyers as Kadayawan festival nears

DAVAO CITY — Traders from all over Mindanao are showcasing their products starting this week for the attention of the thousands of visitors expected to flock here for the annual Kadayawan Festival that starts next week.

On Thursday two trade exhibits, the Exporters Expo and the Mindanao Trade Expo, will open at this city’s Bangko Sentral complex.

Over at the SM City Davao fair grounds, an agro-industrial exhibit gathering the best agricultural products of Davao Region will be mounted for the Kadayawan crowd, mostly high-income consumers from this city as well as neighboring provinces and regions, and visitors from Metro Manila.
.
.
.
The trade fair at this city’s Bangko Sentral which runs from Aug. 13 to 16 will showcase a wide array of items for export and will serve as a venue to link producers, sellers and buyers in one roof.

Partnerships for sub-contracting arrangements will be forged during the trade expositions, said officials of the Department of Trade and Industry, which is organizing both events.

The products that will be on display include arts and crafts, holiday and home decors, fashion accessories, processed food, furniture, gifts, garments, garden accessories, electronics, houseware, jewelry, kitchen and tableware, leather goods, linens, stationery and desk accessories, organic and natural products, and other exportable goods.
.
.
.
The Kadayawan agro-industrial trade fair at SM City Davao, meanwhile, will run until August 31. On display will be endemic flowers, plants, fruits, vegetables, Mindanao crafts and souvenir items from 110 exhibitors in 380 booths.

In previous years, the Kadayawan, originally a tribal harvest and thanksgiving feast, has been transformed into a business event where establishments expect their revenues to shoot up and a venue to get rid of their excess stocks.

SM City Davao has announced it will extend hours and mount a mall-wide sale from August 14 to 23. Other major shopping malls also competing to attract shoppers in the coming two weeks are New City Commercial Center malls in Matina and in Chinatown, Victoria Plaza in Bajada, Gaisano Mall of Davao also in Bajada and the Gaisano South on Ilustre St. at the central business district.

The four awardees were part of the Makati Football Club team which competed in Denmark, Sweden and Spain last month. They also saw action in the prestigious Gothia Cup against the world's best youth booters.

The Davao players were accompanied by some parents in the European trip.

Artisthood Small Artworks exhibit at Via Café
Written by: Times Editors , Times Editors
Monday, 10 August 2009

SOME of Davao’s finest, internationally-recognized, award-winning artists have found a way of making valuable artworks available to the public at affordable prices. Ega Carreon, Jun Pamisa, Michael Bauzon, Rex Kyamko, Rob Tanedo, and Herbert Tirador—all of art group Artisthood—are going to open their original reproduction and small works exhibit on Friday, August 14 in Via Café at the junction of Mount Apo and General Luna Streets, Davao City.
Reproductions of originals, printed in high-definition, are the main feature of the group exhibition. The petite artworks capture the grandiose of expensive originals in dainty frames of 12 x 16 inches maximum size. They are perfect in bringing to life the drab, low and narrow walls inside small offices, cubicles, dining rooms, bedrooms, and wherever you find empty walls crying to be filled in with beauty and meaning. For as low as a few hundred pesos you can own one of a limited edition.
This ingenious way of making great art by emerging masters available to the Davao public is devised by Artisthood founder Ega Carreon who, last March, had returned to Davao from a four-year sojourn in New York, USA. “Most people appreciate art but only few can afford to buy because art is luxury,” he says, “by reproducing originals in limited edition, artworks that are otherwise luxurious are now affordable to the public.”

While in northeastern United States, Carreon added another gem to his string of art awards by winning first prize in the 2007 annual art competition of the Hudson Artists of New Jersey.
Jun Pamisa is three-time winner of the nationwide Metrobank annual young artists painting competition, alternate winner to the 2002 Asian Fellowship painting competition of the Vermont Studio Center, and consistent finalist to the Philippine Art Awards. Michael Bauzon is winner of Special Prize in the 2005 Jules Verne-inspired Decourtenay Ambassadors’ art competition launched in Belgium and participated in by 220 entrants from 90 countries. Also on display are poems of Malaya de Luna. For more of Artisthood log on to www.artisthood.org.
Hanna Louise Raquedan, owner of Via Café, will open Artisthood’s seventh group show with a ceremonial cutting of ribbon. Acoustic music and poetry reading will spice up the visual feast. Cocktails will be served to 30 specially invited guests.
The public is invited to view the show until September 14 and enjoy Via Café’s artistic ambiance with Davao’s finest coffee and great pasta. The café’s mezzanine floor, with cozy divans, is ideal for small group chitchats. Via Café also serves lunch and dinner, Monday to Saturday.

DABAWENYOS will experience a new sound trip on August 14 at the Durian Bar, Madrazo Compound with the multi-media event Golden Noises: Explorations on Sound.

Golden Noises is a back-to-back sound art show and workshop from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. (workshop) and 8 p.m. (show) offered by Japan-based and Manila-based sound artists Toshiyuki Seido and Eric Calilan, and Davao-based electronic musician Chuck Fournier.

The Golden Noises workshop will be open to the public with free registration while tickets priced at P30 will be sold for the show.

The workshop and show will aim to open the participants/audience's ears, minds and bodies to new sound frontiers and new approaches in sound and music-making and move them to create new sound environments.

It also aims to foster new directions for music-making in the local music scene.

The Golden Noises workshop will be facilitated by Seido, Calilan, and Fournier. The outputs of the workshop participants as well as Seido, Calilan, and Fournier's varied experimentations and explorations on sound will be showcased in the show.

Toshiyuki Seido has been a sound artist for more than 20 years and has performed in various local and international exhibits and shows, most recently in Kaida Gallery, Manila with fellow sound artist and collaborator Lirio Salvador to release their multi-media work (also in collaboration with visual artist and sculptor Noell El Farol and photographer Koji Onaka) entitled "ManilaBox", a collection of sounds and images of Manila.

In 2008, he founded the label "New Art Laboratory," which aims to produce sound and performance works in the Philippines.

Calilan often performs under the name Ugong, a sound art outfit utilizing home-made circuit-bent sound devices created from toy keyboards, walkie-talkie and other low voltage electronic devices. He is based in Dasmariñas, Cavite.

Primarily a guitarist and a composer in the 90s Manila rock scene, Chuck Fournier explored electronic music before his move to Davao in 2004. He has won an award for his techno-tribal piece featuring synthesizers and traditional ethnic instruments, along with Manobo lyrics entitled "Life's Circle (Gahad To Ko-ontayan)" in the Tugtog World Music Festival in Davao City, sponsored by The Davao Tourism Authority. Fournier continues to stretch his musical boundaries in exploring sound and music.

The events are sponsored by Genzai Boardinghouse, MIX FM, Hippie Store, Patria Montemayor, and Vicky Canilao and daughters.

3 banks in P1.5-B loan deal for Ayala project in Davao PDF Print E-mail

CHINA Bank, Metropolitan Bank & Trust Co. (Metrobank) and Land Bank of the Philippines have agreed to extend a P1.5-billion term loan to a joint venture between Ayala Land and the Anflo (Antonio Floirendo) Group, which will contruct a mall in Davao.

China Bank has recently signed a P500-million loan agreement with Accendo Commercial Corp., which is 46-percent owned by Ayala Land.

Accendo, incorporated in 2008 and partly owned by Antonio Floirendo Corp. or Anflocor, has also finalized five- and seven-year loan deals with Metrobank and LandBank.

China Bank, which is controlled by mall magnate Henry Sy, announced the deals in a statement.

Accendo is to undertake the Abreeza project, a mixed-use development that reportedly will have retail, office, hotel and commercial lot components on a 10-hectare property along JP Laurel Avenue, Davao City.

The project also includes office space for business-process outsourcing companies.

It will be the first mall venture in Davao of Ayala Land, the country’s largest and most diversified real-estate company. It is expected to be operational by 2011.

Total development cost is estimated to reach between P4 billion and P5 billion, with Ayala Land shouldering 67 percent and Anflocor contributing 33 percent.

RESURGENCE OF TRADE BREWS IN BIMP-EAGA COUNTRIES

MANILA, Aug 10 (NNN-PNA) -- Resurgence of trade relations among countries under the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) has started as member nations see a better economic and security environment across the borders.

Philippines Trade Undersecretary Merly Cruz(from davao?) said in a press briefing in Malacanang the objective of BIMP-EAGA is to give attention to areas in respective countries that are far from the capital, citing Mindanao and Palawan for the Philippines as an example.

Presidential Adviser on Mindanao Jesus Dureza said they want to see that regulations of member-countries are harmonized because the four nations have been trading in the past.

Dureza and Cruz led the Philippine delegation as the Philippine Signing Minister and Philippine Senior Official for BIMP-EAGA respectively at the 18th Senior Officials and 14th Ministerial Meeting (SOM/MM) held in Brunei Darussalam last week.

Last month, a Philippine-EAGA Technical Support Staff Meeting (TSSM) was held in Koronadal City during which the Philippine-EAGA sector had reviewed and validated the developments of various in-country initiatives related to BIMP-EAGA.

Cruz announced in the press conference, the re-opening of the Ekran Berhad Casino in the Island Garden of the City of Samal in Davao as part of the BIMP-EAGA initiatives.

“The very first investment concept that was brought in the initial stage of BIMP-EAGA was really the Ekran Berhad project. The intention then was to bring in tourists from Malaysia in the shortest route which is connecting Kota Kinabalu and Davao. The initial stage was more of private sector driven discussion….it is more of bringing in the players directly to Davao,” she said.

Dureza said that due to the Asian financial crisis at that time, the project was stalled. However, with the renewed interest in forging trade relationships, the Malaysian investors made a sound decision to continue the project in Samal Island.

Davao Congressman Antonio Lagdameo, who also attended the Malacanang press conference, explained that roughly Php50 million will be the government’s revenues from business, property and income taxes once the Ekran Berhad project opens. -- NNN-PNA

Investment prospects high in
IT-BPO, property dev’t: Laviña

Investment prospects are high in the property development and IT-BPO sector in Davao City, councilor Peter Laviña said yesterday.

Speaking at the Kapehan sa Davao at Café Rysus, SM City Davao, said the committee on housing is still the busiest among the city council committees.

Laviña, who chairs the City Council committee on trade and industry, said the construction of the Ayala Mall, which is being speeded up for its opening in 2010, and the upcoming construction of the city’s second SM City mall, are indicators of a healthy investment climate in the city.

Laviña also expressed optimism on the ICT-BPO sector which is positioning Davao City as the next-wave city in the sector.

At the recently concluded ICT Summit, the sector is already preparing the ICT roadmap for the next five years to achieve its goal of becoming the next wave city in the ICT-BPO sector.

Laviña, who attended the summit, said the city’s ICT-BPO sector has contributed a 1-percent share in the country’s ICT industry. With this and the availability of human resource, the city is a good prospect to become an ICT-BPO hub, he said.

Laviña said the local government could help the sector by incorporating in the roadmap certain tax and non-fiscal incentives to encourage more ICT-BPO to locate to the city.

He said the local government can also participate by incorporating provisions that would entice companies to hire IT personnel in their respective workplaces to boost the city’s employment rate. Judy Quiros

This will greatly determine the venue for our initial meet up. Alam mo namang puro naka wheels ang mga Davao goys kaya kailangan yung venue accessible through streets that will not be closed for the street dancing.

Kusina Selera: Investing in Davao cuisine
Sunday, 02 August 2009 14:06
PDF
THIS newly-opened restaurant is a combination of many things: A Filipino-Malay name, Filipino dishes and a modern interior.
Selera is an Indonesian word that means tasty, thus the name Kusina Selera which can be translated to Tasty Kitchen.
The business was actually born of a friendship and a common love for a place, not necessarily their birthplace, but which they find convenient, relaxed and comfortable for living a happier life.
Kusina Selera is run by SanLaza Corporation owned by Googie Sañga, Marivi Laurel and Kathy Samodio -- all from Manila.
Kathy Samodio’s mom is from Davao but Kathy herself grew up in Manila. She used to be a HongKong-based stewardess for Cathay Pacific, but graduated from a course in interior design.
“It was Marivi who saw the place which reminded her of their ancestral home on Shaw Boulevard in Manila,” Samodio said. Marivi used to be in the business of exporting tropical fish while the other owner, Googie, was in the bottling business.
Samodio said they saw a good opportunity in putting up a restaurant business here. “Davao is very raw pa as far as the food service industry is concerned, so we saw the potential of setting up such business here,” she said.
Kusina Selera basically caters to the hotel guests of Legaspi Suites. This is a boutique hotel with about 20 rooms which always has a 100 percent occupancy. Ultimately, the Davao crowd started to discover Selera by word of mouth.
Samodio, who is a green card holder, said she passed up the chance to live a more comfortable life in the United States because she finds Davao City charming. “I love the fact that I can live a relaxed life here while running a business,” she added.
She said Davao has a provincial setting that’s starting to become cosmopolitan. This was also the perception of her friends and now business partners, Marivi and Googie who are both golfers and who love the idea of playing a round of golf and then being able to still do many things after that because of Davao’s easy and laid back lifestyle and tolerable traffic.
Kusina Selera serves Filipino dishes, like Tadyang ng Baka, Kare-Kare, Boneless Crispy Chicken and other dishes. They keep improving their menu to cater to the local palate.
Kusina Selera is only the start for SanLaza because they are set to open Kamagoo Bar.
“We believe in our concept and we are not scared to take that risk of opening a business even in time of an economic crisis,” she said. [Lovely A. Carillo]

[Lovely A. Carillo]

Do you have the route of the Indak-Indak?

This will greatly determine the venue for our initial meet up. Alam mo namang puro naka wheels ang mga Davao goys kaya kailangan yung venue accessible through streets that will not be closed for the street dancing.

P560M investments given incentives
Tuesday, August 11, 2009

OVER P560 million worth of investments in Davao City has been granted incentives by the Davao City Investment Promotion Center (DCIPC), said Councilor Peter Laviña.

“Two businesses, a hotel and a manufacturing company, were granted incentives by DCIPC,” said Laviña, who chairs the City Council committee on trade and development.

Post your prayers and condolences for Cory Aquino's family

The P60 million refurbishing of what was formerly the Men Seng Hotel, now named as My Hotel along San Pedro St., has directly and indirectly employed 129 employees.

The other business, Invent Coffee Manufacturing Corporation, has applied for incentives for its P500 million investment in the city wherein it will put up a processing plant for the processing of coffee and cacao.

An estimated 70 persons will be directly and indirectly employed by the said venture.

The two businesses were granted a three-year sales tax holiday and a two year exemption from property taxes.

Early this year, DCIPC has granted fiscal incentives for Chula Vista Residences in Cabantian, Buhangin district.

Chula Vista Residences is developed by Hemeni Land Corporation with a declared estimated project cost of P661.85 million. The real estate developer also declared that the project will generate 18 direct jobs and 75 indirect employments.

The middle-class housing project has been granted by DCIPC exemptions from payment of building permit fees and other fees and charges, Mayor's permit fees, and business sales taxes for the next three years.

The same project was also exempted from the payment of Basic Real Property Tax for the next two years.

Investments in the sectors of Tourism and Recreational Facilities, Agri Business and Food Processing, Light Manufacturing and Assembly, Property Development, Transshipment Infrastructure, Establishment of Foreign Bank Branches, Medical, Educational, Training, and Sports Facilities, Telecommunications, and Environmental Enhancement and Protection Project, are deemed preferred investments. Resurgence of trade brewing in BIMP-EAGA countries

Manila (11 August) -- Resurgence of trade relations among countries under the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) has started as member nations see a better economic and security environment across the borders.

Trade Undersecretary Merly Cruz said the objective of BIMP-EAGA is to give attention to areas in respective countries that are far from the capital, citing Mindanao and Palawan for the Philippines as an example.

Cruz bared the re-opening of the Ekran Berhad Casino in the Island Garden of the City of Samal in Davao as part of the BIMP-EAGA initiatives.

"The very first investment concept that was brought in the initial stage of BIMP-EAGA was really the Ekran Berhad project. The intention then was to bring in tourists from Malaysia in the shortest route which is connecting Kota Kinabalu and Davao. The initial stage was more of private sector driven discussion….it is more of bringing in the players directly to Davao," she said.

Dureza said that due to the Asian financial crisis at that time, the project was stalled. However, with the renewed interest in forging trade relationships, the Malaysian investors made a sound decision to continue the project in Samal Island.

Davao Congressman Antonio Lagdameo, who also attended the Malacanang press conference, explained that roughly Php50 million will be the government's revenues from business, property and income taxes once the Ekran Berhad project opens. (PIA)

Cebu Pacific Davao Passenger traffic up by 22.5% vs 2008

Leading domestic low cost carrier Cebu Pacific (CEB) celebrates continuous market dominance in Davao with a seat sale as low as P888 from August 12 to August 18, 2009. Travel period is from October 1 to November 30, 2009.

Cebu Pacific offers P888 ‘Go Lite’ seats for its Davao-Zamboanga flights, and P1,088 ‘Go Lite’ seats for its Manila-Davao and Manila-Zamboanga services.

Passengers with check-in baggage will just add P100 upon booking.

“We flew nearly 500,000 passengers from January to June 2009 alone. We maintain being the airline with the most passengers flown, most routes and most number of flights from Davao, cementing our lead in the area,” said Cebu Pacific VP for Marketing and Distribution Candice Iyog.

Cebu Pacific posts a 22.5% year on year growth on the number of passengers flown via its Davao hub.

She added, “Because of this, we want to continuously provide our ever-growing passenger base in Davao the low fares that Cebu Pacific is known for. Hopefully, this will continuously spur local and international travel, and stimulate the economy and tourism in the area.”

AT LEAST two major medical facilities in Davao City are on the road to becoming Mindanao's first medical tourism facilities, based on the Board of Investments (BOI)-Southern Mindanao.

Gil Dureza, BOI-Southern Mindanao chief, said during the Club 888 business forum at Marco Polo Davao that there are two medical facilities in Davao City that have applied for expansion in line with their bid for medical tourism.

"Aside from the two existing facilities, another investment focused on dental tourism is also underway," Dureza said, citing the growing investments focused on tourism in Southern Mindanao.

The identities of the companies were, however, not disclosed by Dureza.

But based on previous interviews, Davao Doctors Hospital has announced that it is gearing in becoming one of the flagship medical tourism facilities in Mindanao.

Moreover, medical tourism will be discussed during a plenary session of the Mindanao Travel and Tour Expo 2009, with Metro Pacific Investments Corporation chair Manuel V. Pangilinan as speaker.

Other investments focused on tourism in the region are two retirement villages in Davao del Norte and an inland resort in Davao City.

"One of the retirement villages is an investment by a Korean investor, while the other is local," Dureza said. (CPM)

Dance with the sail
Thursday, August 13, 2009

WINDSURFING is one of the most amazing sports, combining the thrills of surfing, tranquility of sailing, and being in touch with nature. Such was the experience even for a day of Windsurfing Crash Course at Playa Azalea, at Barangay Limao, Samal Island with Windsurfing Trainors Ronald Vibar, Jun Tumala and Patrick Oracion.

MetroLifestyle fitness members enjoyed the fair weather with light rainfall, and just a hint of the noonday sun. Windsurfing gave that unbeatable feeling of being out in the open, gliding effortlessly over beautiful, clear waters at Playa Azalea, Samal Island. The wind condition that sends light ripples on flat water was almost ideal for first-time learners.

Post your prayers and condolences for Cory Aquino's family

Onshore winds kept the windsurfing-beginners safe, providing fun and easy learning moments for Cherry de Guzman and daughter Samantha, Cathy Astudillo and daughter Tashea, sporty Beverly Paqueo, Korean fitness enthusiast Enoch Kim, Lani Roque, and Playa Azalea Sales Manager Engr.
Oscar Tabije. Playa Azalea Property Consultants who also joined in the fun are Jerry Ruiz, Apryl Astillo, Alyn Ga, Mark Salang, Angelie Torrecampo, Ma. Theresa B. Garcia, Calixto Bumaat Jr., and Chang Atencio.ÿ

Before heading to the sea, the beginners spent a few minutes for basic instructions from Windsurfing Trainor Ronald Vibar about the basic skills of windsurfing: uphauling, turning, and sailing away.

Amazingly, basic windsurfing can be learned within a few minutes! The boards are stable and sails are lightweight for all ages. One doesn’t need a catlike balance and strength as adult-size boards can also accommodate children even for first-time windsurfing experiences.

Windsurfing is like learning how to dance: when you're out on the water, posture must be squared up, with shoulders and hips parallel to the rig (the combination of sail, mast and boom after it is assembled).

Just like dancing, your hands are not glued to your partner's (or, the boom of the sail) and your feet are not glued to the floor (or, the board).

Another correlation between sailing and dancing is attitude. Feel confident with a certain dance move, and it will show. When you and your partner are moving together, the dancing begins to flow in rhythm with the music. The same goes for sailing, you will glide in time with the wind.

Windsurfing is also a good exercise, like dancing. It naturally tones the back, arms, stomach and legs. Both skills, with regular practice, develop coordination, balance and core stability.

The best part is that you're having so much fun that it doesn't feel like exercise. Enroll now at MetroLifestyle and discover fun ways to exercise.

Diwalwal gold discovery
retold at Museo Dabawenyo

DAVAO CITY— The history of Diwalwal gold mining was unveiled Wednesday at the Museo Dabawenyo.

The provincial government of Compostela Valley and the Department of Tourism (DOT) 11 in cooperation with Davao Region Tourism Council and Museo Dabawenyo brought to discussion the history of gold mining and how it has become a “microcosm of wealth of Mindanao

Compostela Valley being the seat of gold-mining in Mindanao got at the center of DUHWOW! Described as part of DOT’s initiative to showcase “the best, the unique, and the distinct heritage of the Davao Region.”

Compostela Valley pro-vince had its exhibit of gold, eco-tourism sites to explore and lecture-forum about gold and mining development held at Museo Dabawenyo where a press conference was also conducted on Wednesday.

During the lecture-forum, Mandaya Datu Camilo Banad said he first discovered in September 23, 1983 the gold nuggets at the Naboc River whose waters flowed from streams originating from the mountains of Mt. Diwalwal.

A historical account released by the Provincial Tourism Office of Compostela Valley revealed that the group of Banad first panned for gold, draining earth from cliffs and mountainsides of Diwalwal, to capture gold.

The gold discovery since then brought wealth as well as disaster to those who ventured gold mining in Mt. Diwalwal—a mineral reservation area of more than 8,000 hectares straddling the provinces of Compostela Valley and Agusan.

The prevent further loss of lives and property of those who braved their way to extract gold deposits, the Philippine government declared Mt. Diwalwal in November 25, 2002 as a Mineral Reservation Area.

The government consequently took over the mining operation in Diwalwal through Executive Order 217 which President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo issued on June 17, 2003 that created the National Task Force Diwalwal (NTFD) with the Department of National Defense as its head. Among others, the order sought to pacify the tension that was gripping the area at the time due to skirmishes among small scale mining operators.

President Arroyo then reconstituted NTFD through Executive Order 258 issued on December 13, 2003 designating the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) as its head.

To carry out tasks at the regional level and to deliver necessary assistance and government interventions for small-scale miners, the Program Monitoring Coordinating Center (PMCC) was created under the NTFD with DENR XI as its head.

PMCC Secretariat head Nora Alicante of DENR XI discussed on Wednesday’s DUHWOW activity, the role of PMCC as a convergence group of national agencies and local government units taking focus on concerns of Diwalwal residents.

Mines and Geo-sciences Bureau (MGB) Regional Director Edilberto Arreza discussed mining regulations that operators ought to adhere to while Mt. Diwata Barangay Captain Francisco Tito aired sentiments of the small-scale mining sector of Mt. Diwalwal.

DUHWOW also brought to the forum Professor Dennis Sumaylo and Dr. Carmen Unabia of the University of the Philippines- Mindanao (UP-Min) who talked about the significance of gold discovery to Mindanao folklore. PIA XI/JMDA

there are sereis of articles been reading lately campaigning on this issue. in my honest opinion, most of the write ups were not a open mind getting into whats a popular cause that will sell to the victims of indiscriminate informations. i dont know but the bottom line of my point, how can the philippines penetrate markets that are dreading the pests identified with philippines bananas. how can the country compeptetively get a fair deal of market share it desire if it cannot eradicate the pests. if those on all out campaign could not present a better practice alternatives, how many more thousands of jobs they will threaten and up to deprive the poor of decent realiable income by pressuring plantations owners to fall down and not survive with their businesses.

if they succed in theier cause, how many more localitis they will move into and infiltrate and help people to rise against employers which gives economic dependence and surviaval of towns to keep its economy afloat? are they doing all these things to keep discontent burning and help people to develop culture of helpessnes and finger pointing bec they were left to live in misery? arent they helping the governemt how to improve the lingiering figures of widespread poverty incidence like a third of ?90million. how manys that?

bananais a major export of the philippines and one of top revenue earner, why cant it not be helped to survive and continue, is something i could not comprehend. the philippines is known a poor country, whats gonna happen if hundreds of thoudands directly dependendent on the indutry could possibly lose their jobs, can the govrnment come and rescue them? how about youselves, can do anything to rescue joblessnenss? its giving impression your acts doesnt care of adverse consequences like you think only of ideals and a rich governemtn. how many more investors you gonna pressure and drive away? hope you realise the philippines ins not paradise for investment. investors stayed their bec they were given good breaks and a welcoming environment. they will be happy to leave and relocate to a politically stable econmies if youre giving them shits.

DOH hands off on aerial spraying study

THE Department of Health (DOH) is keeping its hands off on a report that showed adverse effects of aerial spraying on a community living within a banana plantation.

DOH Assistant Secretary Paulyn-Jean Ubial clarified reports that it was not the health department which conducted the study in sitio Camocaan, Hagonoy, Davao del Sur.

Post your prayers and condolences for Cory Aquino's family

"The DOH merely assisted the group, sinamahan lang sila sa area (they were just accompanied in the area)," Ubial said in a press conference Wednesday. "The research and review was not done by the DOH."

Last July, Dr. Allan Dionisio of the National Poison Management and Control Center (NPMCC) discussed the results of the study in behalf of health expert groups, NPMCC and the Philippine Society of Clinical and Occupational Toxicology (PSCOT), which conducted the DOH-funded study.

The study noted the alarming symptoms of pesticides among the residents near a banana plantation.

The results showed the presence of pesticide in the human blood, the soil and air samples outside the banana plantation area.

Dubbed as "Health and Environmental Assessment of Sitio Camocaan in Hagonoy, Davao del Sur," the study emphasized the impact of prolonged exposure to aerial spraying to people and the environment.

The study recommended that "aerial spraying of pesticides should be stopped and a shift to organic farming techniques should be considered."

"The study did not compare whether or not aerial spraying is better or worse than manual spraying," Ubial said. "What they compared was the use of pesticides against organic farming."

Sitio Camoocan is located adjacent to the Lapanday banana plantation, which practices the aerial spraying method for many years now, according to the study.

The study, which recommends banning of aerial spraying, was also based on the "unusual neurologic and dermatologic conditions observed among the Camocaan group, such as severe developmental delays, chloracne and cutaneous lupus erythematosus, thyroid gland disorders which are warning cases of long-term exposures to pesticides."

Ubial said the study did not answer the question of whether or not aerial spraying is better than ground spraying. "The study is not a good basis for the policy as it was did not address the question."

It was also reported that aside from the call to ban aerial spraying, the study team also recommended an establishment of a health surveillance to detect chronic effects of pesticides, which include a more detailed neuro-developmental assessment of children, a follow up of previously diagnosed conditions, a screening for thyroid gland abnormalities and liver cancer, and periodic screening of biomarkers of pesticide exposure among residents. AERIAL SPRAYING

People run for cover when crop dusters fly

By Ma. Ceres P. Doyo

MANILA, Philippines — “Dili kami peste (We are not pests.)”

This is the cry of communities near banana plantations in Mindanao who have to suffer the adverse effects of regular toxic aerial spraying meant to kill pests in bananas.

School children on their way to school, farmers cultivating their small farms, people drinking coffee al fresco and families doing their daily chores are among those who suffer indirect hits and have to run for cover when airplanes unleash pesticides on vast banana plantations. While they are not the intended targets, there is no way they can avoid getting hit by the airplanes’ toxic load. Respiratory and skin ailments are among the first signs of a toxic hit.

Farm animals, edible plants and water sources also catch their share of the toxic rain.

‘No one died here,’ sitio residents say
Joel C. Paredes / Special to the BusinessMirror

THE report written by a doctor affiliated with a nongovernment organization (NGO) noted that in a small remote village in Davao del Sur called sitio Camocaan, people were facing “a slow, but certain death” due to heavy exposure to pesticides triggered by the constant aerial spraying of big banana plantations down south for over two decades now.

A report prepared by the Pesticide Action Network (PAN) in 2002-2003, led by Dr. Romeo Quijano, noted that the people in this “poisoned village” with direct contact with these chemicals had “both their health and living environment withering under their deadly spray.”

Local NGO groups like Mamamayan Ayaw sa Aerial Spray (MAAS) and the Interface Development Interventions (even documented cases of deaths in the village that allegedly turned into a wasteland, with most of its residents suffering from skin diseases, all blamed on the deadly pesticides.

Meanwhile, in another side of Davao lived a prominent leader, whose sprawling villa was adjacent to an old plantation where the bananas were sprayed by single-engine airplanes. He couldn’t stand the noise while he and his friend meditated at dawn. He was influential and successfully rallied City Hall to ban aerial spraying.

The local court affirmed the local government’s decision, only to be reversed in the Court of Appeals on grounds that it was unconstitutional.

But that wasn’t enough. The banana growers were pictured as villains, destroying what could have been a place where people “had more than enough to feed their families and sustain quite a comfortable lifestyle.”

The Camocaan experience was used as a basis for Davao City’s ban in 2007.

I personally visited sitio Camocaan with officials from the Fertilizers and Pesticide Authority (FPA) and Croplife, and learned that the stories of deaths and disease were figments of some people’s imagination and part of other people’s self-serving agenda.

Victoria Garucho, the barangay health worker in Sitio Camocaan, said that, indeed, several NGO workers visited their place and offered to help them if they would denounce the aerial spraying in their village.

“Wala naman ho na namatay sa amin [No one among us died],” she said. “Ipapa-ban daw ang aerial spray. Paano ’yon? Mamamatay ang plantation at ang epekto n’yan mawawalan kami ng trabaho. [They want to ban aerial spraying. What will happen? The plantation will die, and we will lose our jobs].”

The twins Marlon and Marvin Dulla, reported by Dr. Quijano to have died at birth due to aerial spraying, are actually alive and well, now both 25 years old, with Marvin recently becoming a father himself. Marlon tends pigs, chickens and goats in Camocaan today to further boost his income from the plantation beside the community.

Another Camocaan resident, Celina Manggaga, diagnosed by Dr. Quijano with terminal goiter, also lived on, according to her older brother, a tribal leader of the Manobo-Kalagan tribe who also lives in the area.

True enough, two months after the ban on aerial spraying in Davao City, the 300- hectare banana plantation in Mandug district was forced to close down and its 600 workers were laid off. The plantation was plagued with the influx of the deadly black sigatoka disease, characterized by high leaf loss, low-bunch weight (underweight), slow-sucker growth and eventually malformed fruits.

Only the so-called caciques (landowners) were blamed. But they own thousands of hectares of plantations outside of Davao City.

Meanwhile, the FPA allows the banana industry to apply fungicides and nutrients by aerial spraying based on the Good Agricultural Practice, to prevent incidence of black sigatoka.

Without agriculture-chemical inputs, the fruits ripen while in transit to the market, which could result in the rejection of a whole shipment of the Philippine produce. Main buyers of Philippine bananas are Japan, China, North Korea, the Middle East, Singapore, Brunei and New Zealand.

Lately, the Philippines has begun to face stiff completion from China, Sri Lanka and Australia. India, which is the largest producer of bananas worldwide, is also preparing to export its quality varieties, along with neighboring Indonesia.

“Sabi ng mga kumausap sa amin, isasalba daw nila ang aming buhay. Ngayon lalo kaming naghihirap [According to those who spoke with us, they will save our lives and livelihood. Now, we are suffering more],” lamented Cesar Adimat, who had been working at the Lapanday Mandug plantation owned by the Lorenzo family, until the plantation was padlocked and developed as an industrial estate, since it was virtually impossible to continue growing bananas without the aerial spraying.

Adimat had to look for work in another plantation outside of the city since he had always been a flagman, tasked to guide on ground the plane that regularly sprayed fungicides.

In 2006 the Department of Health commissioned another study as a follow-up to the questionable Quijano study of 2002-2003. This time, led by Dr. Allan Dionisio, a toxicologist of the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital, the study group did not even try to verify the veracity of the original Quijano report, which had come under fire for fabrication and false data.

In a mish-mash of hard-to-correlate findings, corrupted by undeclared and unclear research protocols, most of the initial study’s findings were themselves termed as “insignificant” and “inconclusive.” Like its predecessor, the new study leaped at recommending a ban on aerial spraying.

Currently, 50,000 hectares are planted with export-quality bananas. The Philippine Banana Growers and Exporters Association (PBGEA), which groups together big plantation owners, intends to increase its production after President Arroyo recently lifted the limits on banana-hectarage expansion.

Despite the controversy, the Arroyo government decided in favor of expansion, simply because the banana industry generated $720 million in export earnings in 2008.

PBGEA estimated that plantations —big and small—generated 500,000 direct and indirect beneficiaries who earned a total of P7.9 billion in salaries and wages in a year.

The government earns more than P1.5 billion in taxes from the industry annually, and investments in the banana industry have reached P35 billion to date.

Mindanao, which exports world-class-grade fresh Cavendish bananas, is now also the second-largest exporter next to Ecuador.

“We are No. 1 in terms of productivity worldwide,” PBGEA head Stephen Antig said. But he insisted that this was because they were using “environment- sound and -friendly technology,” which antiaerial spraying NGOs denounced as “dangerous and deadly.”

Tagum Development Corp., which pioneered in the Mindanao banana industry in the early ’70s under the leadership of local industrialist Antonio Floirendo, was, in fact, hailed as having the “most-productive, best-quality” bananas in the world.

But are government and industry leaders on the right track?

Going back to Camocaan, a health and environmental assessment conducted by Dr. Quijano for PAN, the Philippine Society of Clinical and Occupational Toxicology Inc. and the University of the Philippines National Poison Management and Control Center raises the question on the magnitude of pesticide exposure, “the extent to which the immediate environment of the community was contaminated, the patterns of acute and chronic illnesses in the community, and whether these patterns were in any way related to exposure to plantation pesticides.”

But Dr. Emily Fabregar, chief scientist and head of the PBGEA technical committee, which oversees good agricultural practices in the banana plantations, said aerial spraying with fungicides is still the “safest and the most cost-effective practice to effectively and economically control leaf diseases affecting bananas.”

“Without leaf-disease control, quality fruit cannot be produced and exported economically,” she added.

Currently, there is no cost-efficient alternative yet to the use of chemical fungicides as a major component of integrated pest management (IPM) for black sigatoka, according to Sim Cuyson, executive director of Croplife Philippines, the association of research-based multinational agri-chemical and biotechnology companies which are in the forefront of technical innovations in the worldwide plant-science industry.

“The presence of pesticide residues, whether it is in food, in the environment or in the human body, does not necessarily mean harm to health and the environment,” he said.

Fabregar said that they have begun conducting research on increasing organic inputs similar to what is being used on Negros Island, which produces organically grown bananas known as the Bongolan variety. But she said the variety is colored green and could not ripen into yellow, just like the Cavendish which is the most in-demand variety worldwide.

BPO workshop reminds govt, groups of need to make Davao attractive to relocating companies (http://businessmirror.com.ph/home/regions/14578-bpo-workshop-reminds-govt-groups-of-need-to-make-davao-attractive-to-relocating-companies.html)

DAVAO CITY—A recent business-process outsourcing (BPO) workshop has highlighted the need for host cities in Mindanao and industry organizations to set up a fast and viable investment atmosphere—mainly information and communications technology infrastructure, talent pool and affordable power and real-estate rates—to attract relocating and incoming companies to the Philippines.

“Mindanao should be able to fast- track its efforts in creating a conducive environment for BPO investments that would zero in on infrastructure readiness and tapping its enormous talent pool,” according to a statement released by the Mindanao Economic Development Council (Medco), the government’s socioeconomic-planning body for Mindanao.

Industry leaders have been insisting to prepare these needs of the BPO industry, especially for a place like Mindanao, which has to compete with other areas and to overcome its image tainted with security concern in some parts of the island.

The Medco said industry experts have asked industry associations and the local government “to build on strengths that would make the city more attractive to BPO locators.”

“Abundant and low-cost real estate is spurring the growth of IT-BPO investments and this boom is fuelled by real demand with many potential investors asking for ready-now spaces at reasonable cost,” Medco quoted Lizabel Holganza, president of ICT Davao Inc., as saying.

Holganza said Manila and Cebu have been the premier areas of BPO investment due to their abundant IT parks that were registered and accredited with the Philippine Export Zone Authority (Peza), a main requirement of BPO locators.

Bert Barriga, ICT Davao external vice president, said Davao City, for instance, “must be able to increase the number of its Peza sites and making these sites attractive and viable investment locations.”

He added that “infrastructure, talent, cost of doing business and risk management are the major criteria the BPO locators are focusing on.” Barriga said Davao City should “increase its competitiveness in the major areas of the BPO scorecard” because, he said, “BPO locators cannot all converge in Metro Manila.”

Holganza said Mindanao “needs to capitalize on its large untapped absorptive capacity which can drive the IT-BPO development efforts.”

“The fact that Davao and all of Mindanao have a deep talent pool creates a big pull for potential locators,” she said. She added that the potential of this pool “must be clearly understood, delivering high-end outsourcing process such as knowledge process outsourcing and information technology outsourcing.”

Holganza said ICT Davao has started mapping out the 2015 projection for the demand for human resource in the different ICTs “as well as continuing collaborations with academe and technical-education providers in providing skills-enhancement programs that will close HR gaps.”

The workshop early this month also focused on security of infrastructure and transport systems, fiscal incentives and creating an ICT-friendly environment, energy demand and talent development, Medco said. A series of workshops was undertaken as part of the ICT Summit 2009-Convergence 2009 held last week here.

Blessing and dedication of ABHWC Beghard Hall (Davao City)
Written by: Calamba , Nino
Thursday, 13 August 2009
Mindanao Times

THE ALEXIAN Brothers Health & Wellness Center, on the occasion of the feast day of Saint Alexius – Man of God, dedicated the newest building of ABHWC to the original Alexian Brothers 800 years ago.

Beghard Hall was named after the first brothers who started the Alexian charism of helping the sick, the poor and the unfortunate people of God. Beghards, they were called during those early times.

The Alexian Charism is a prophetic and daring response of a faithful community to the Gospel of Jesus. It is rooted in prayer and simple lifestyle. In discipleship with Jesus, the brothers’ response is reaching out to the poor, sick and dying. The charism calls the brothers to conversion and total self-giving in continuing the healing and reconciling mission of Jesus in collaboration with others.

ABHWC, being one of the concrete examples of healthcare ministry of the Alexian Brothers, continues to become an avenue for service and love for others. Adding to its Outreach Ministry conducted regularly in various depressed parts in the city, the Alexian Brothers Health & Wellness Center fulfills the mission of the Alexian Values in Action brimming with enthusiasm.

The Beghard Hall will accommodate ABHWC’s existing services, including Non-Invasive Cardiac Diagnostic Procedures and Endoscopic Procedures, plus its new services which will start soon are the following: Cardiac Imaging, Day Hematology Clinic, Ambulatory Diabetes Clinic, Cardiac Rehab. The Beghard Hall will also house the doctor’s clinics.

Present during the blessing and dedication of the ABHWC Beghard Hall are friends of the Alexian Brothers who have stood witness to the overflowing blessings and graces shared by the brothers to the marginalized sector of the society through its Outreach Ministry. Archbishop Fernando Capalla, together with his priests, officiated the Holy Mass held at the St. Alexius Chapel.

In his homily, he shared a bit of the heart-warming life story of St. Alexius, Patron Saint of the Alexian Brothers. He also invited everyone to become spiritually healthy in order to become worthy instruments of God.

Bro. Larry Krueger of the Immaculate Conception Province read the dedication of the ABHWC Beghard Hall to the first Alexian Brothers. He was amazed at how the Alexian ministry in this part of the globe became blessed and inspired for all these years.

Dr. Arnold T. Pasia, Head Staff Cardiologist of the Alexian Brothers Health & Wellness Center, was happy to become part of the ABHWC’s Healthcare Ministry for almost a decade now. As a family member of ABHWC, he saw how the Alexian Brothers’ life and ministry inspired so many people to be good and to do good for others in the name of Jesus.

The blessing and dedication of the Alexian Brothers Health & Wellness Center BEGHARD Hall, in celebration of the feast day of Saint Alexius – Man of God, was a memorable occasion for the Alexian Brothers and their associates, the ABHWC Employees, Alexian Brothers Outreach Ministry Volunteers, and Medical & Dental Staff. It proves that the Alexian spirits of compassion, dignity of the person, care of the poor, holism, and partnership, are alive and are all in action.

Aside from the two residential developments, 8990 is also engaged in the construction of the Deca Wakeboard Park in the city and a three-hectare resort facility.

Atencio also bared that they will be constructing a shopping center in the city which will house 100 stalls.

"It will be right beside our corporate center which is now under construction, along Quirino Avenue," Atencio said.

8990 has been aggressively investing in Davao City since 2002, engaged primarily in mass housing. (CPM)

Modern sports center to rise in Davao

Davao City (14 August) -- A modern gymnasium touted to be one of the biggest sport centers in the region will soon rise at the University of Southeastern Philippines (USEP) campus in Davao City.

Initiated by House Speaker Prospero Nograles, the structure is currently on the bidding stage and is located on the portion of the USEP campus formerly occupied by the old Davao Trade School.

The Speaker originally allotted P60-million sourced from his congressional fund but added P12-million more to the gymnasium which can be used by the USEP for their big school activities and also as a revenue-generating facility.

Nograles in an interview held last Thursday (August 13) says he wants the facility to be functional by March 2010 in time for USEP's graduation ceremonies.

According to the Speaker the gymnasium can seat a maximum of 7,000 people, will be air-conditioned and will be accessible to the city streets adjoining the USEP campus.

The gymnasium will be bigger than the current major sports facilities in the City like the RMC and CYO gyms and will also be larger than the modern Panabo Sports center. It is suited to host PBA (Philippine Basketball Association) games and big concerts.

According to Nograles, the revenues from these events will all go to USEP which will be used to fund more scholars and faculty development programs.

The Speaker says that it is a high time that Davao will have this kind of facility, citing that the mothballed Artica dome, of which the City is paying for the loans, will no longer see the light of the day.

The funds for the gymnasium, Nograles said is part of the Speaker's privilege which he decided to pour in Davao City and which is now being used for more development projects. (PIA XI) [top]

GenSan residents to benefit from rival malls’ operation
Friday, August 14, 2009
Business Mirror by Jerry Adlaw

GENERAL Santos City—Barangay Lagao in this city is abuzz with excitement at the prospect of seeing up close competition between the country’s two biggest mall operators here.

“With Robinsons Place set to open by September, SM Prime Holdings Inc. will also be putting up their shopping mall here in 2010,” said barangay head Minardo Avila III.

Avila said he received information from vice president Hans Sy that SM Prime Holdings Inc. is interested in establishing its shopping mall in barangay Lagao.

SM Prime Holdings, Avila said, has already closed a deal with the Salazar family for the lease of its five-hectare property along Santiago Boulevard, which is under the jurisdiction of barangay Lagao.

The Gokongwei family, owner of the Robinsons malls, started the construction of their P2-billion shopping mall at J. Catolico Avenue in barangay Lagao last year.

The mall also features four movie houses. SM Prime Holdings Inc. has leased the prime-lot property of the Salazar family for about 50 years, Avila said.

Avila added he was happy with the job opportunities available to his constituents in barangay Lagao and that “the two big mall operators are investing their capital here in our city.”

SM Holdings has already started land development in their barangay. “SM usually starts with small developments, or about 85,000 square meters, but with provisions to expand to 200,000 square meters,” Sy was quoted as saying when he announced the project.

SM Prime Holdings Inc. is extending its shopping mall in Ecoland, Davao City, with the addition of another building.
General Santos City has a considerable number of overseas Filipino workers. The presence of seven tuna-canning factories and an international airport has also helped generate jobs for the local population and increase area revenue during the past three years.

“If SM Prime Holdings and Robinsons Place will operate in our area, capital investments will also increase here,” said Chan Suy Lam, president of the KCC Mall here. He said his company can compete with the two big mall operators in terms of services, even as he admitted they are giants compared with the size of his mall’s operation.

Hello and thanks for clicking on the Davao Blogspace link to this post! If you haven't yet done so, please subscribe to the RSS feed for updates to this blog.

The City of Davao is geared up for this year’s celebration of the Kadayawan Festival. As city streets have already been adorned with colorful buntings and streamers, the 2009 Kadayawan Festival Executive Committee — headed by Mayor Rodrigo Duterte along with private sector co-chair Lorenzo Te, Jr. — has lined up an exciting calendar of events for this year’s celebration.

This year’s theme, “Naghiusang Katawhan Nakigdait sa Kalibutan” (“One People in Communion with the Earth”), fittingly responds to the need of the times as Dabawenyos are reminded of their responsibilities towards Mother Earth. As Davao’s indigenous tribes have deemed the earth as the core of their existence, they have also maintained a special connection to the earth which is also the source of the life, living, culture and traditions. Thus, the earth seriously needs to be given utmost care especially this time when climactic changes have affected the lives of many. That is the main cause of this year’s celebration.

Kadayawan, a celebration of thanksgiving for the gifts of nature, the wealth of culture, the bounties of harvest and serenity of living while paying tribute to Davao’s artistic, cultural, industrial and historical heritage, will officially begin on August 21, 2009 with “Dawow: Dayaw – Subay sa Suba” at Tionko Field (Agro Foundation College). The opening ceremony will feature a grand water ritual, musical and cultural performances and the sealing of the people’s covenant to protect mother earth.

Hulagway sa Kaliwatan 2008Under the “Lumadnong Kasaulogan” (Peoples Indigenous Festivals) component of the festival, referring to the showcase of the indigenous peoples’ culture and arts, the following events have been organized: “Hulagway sa Kaliwatan” (Indigenous Peoples Visual Arts Exhibit), a Visual Arts Competition and Exhibit featuring indigenous life ways (August 17-September 17, Museo Dabawenyo); “Panagtagbo”, the Ata Manobo, Ubo Manobo, K’lata, Tagabawa, Matigsalog, Maranao, Maguindanao, Tausug, Sama and Kalagan tribes’ celebration of thanksgiving of their oneness with the earth through performances, culinary fiesta and craftsmanship (August 20-21, Peoples Park and Rizal Park); “Hiyas sa Kadayawan”, the search for the Kadayawan Symbol, the indigenous lass who is knowledgeable of her indigenous culture and wisdom through a pageantry of Mindanaoan myths and legends (August 16, Gaisano Mall of Davao); and “Tugtogan sa Kahiusahan” (Mindanao Indigenous Peoples Music Festival), performances of indigenous music virtuosos from all over Mindanao using various gong percussions, string and wind instruments (August 22, Peoples’ Park).

Meanwhile, under the “Subay Sa Lumadnong Kagikan” (Contemporary Indigenous-motivated Celebrations) component, illustrating the impact of the indigenous culture and traditions to contemporary artists and communities, the following events will be showcased: “Tunog Mindanaw” (World Music Festival), a Mindanao-wide competition of popular yet Mindanao tradition-based music (August 18, NCCC Mall); “Moda Mindanaw”, a fashion and floral design dompetition showcasing indigenous-inspired silhouettes, Mindanawon fabrics, and floral accessories (August 16, Gaisano Mall of Davao); “Sayaw Mindanaw”, competition of Mindanao myths, legends and folklores transformed into dance narratives by Mindanao-based dance groups (August 18-20, SM City Davao); “Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan”, street dancing competition and Mindanao festival showcases (August 22, downtown streets); “Pamulak Kadayawan”, the grand finale featuring floral float and parade competition (August 23, downtown streets); “Kalasikas”, contemporary music and dance concerts (August 17-23, Peoples Park); and “Pakonsyerto ni Mayor Rody ug Vice-Mayor Sara sa Kadayawan” (August 23, Rizal Park).

Other events that are sure to make this year’s festival the grandest ever include the “Baylehan sa Katawhan” (August 23, San Pedro Street), “Kasadalanan” (August 29-30, Streets of Davao), Agro-Industrial Trade Fair and Floral Exhibit (August 1-30, SM City Davao), “Tabo” (August 17, SP Lobby), and Hudyakaan Street Party (August 17-23, Bolton Street), as well as those initiated by the private sector.

For more information, please refer to the Kadayawan festival website. This is a media release from the City Tourism Operations Office.

Modern sports center to rise in Davao

by RG Alama

Going an extra mile for the environment

By Ana Felicia Dulay

YOU need not look further to find a person who is dedicated in promoting Davao Region as the eco-adventure capital of the Philippines.

Philip "Sonny" Dizon is a scion of businessmen in the agriculture sector. That he should embrace the world of eco-adventure sports is not surprising.

Being the brains of the now famous Crocodile Park, a tourist destination that showcases a state-of-the-art crocodile farming system in the Philippines, Sonny frequented the area and kept gazing at the Davao River.

"I saw the river asked myself what is up there," he said.

This wonderment leads to river rafting, now one of the attractions that go with the park.

"I met an American and asked if we can raft the river and he said yes. At that time we had to sit on top of a kayak," he said.

Sonny also gushes on the magnificent natural resources that our region has.

"When I first rafted Davao River, it was a totally awesome experience. Then I started looking for right equipment suited for white water like inflatable rafts. You need to sit inside the kayak for river rafting," he said.

Sonny says he has crossed Davao River over 30 times and he is not going to tire with the experience.

"I started to research and I found out that Davao is the only Philippine National Red Cross chapter that has a river rescue team. In other chapters, the team is only being trained for lifeguarding and CPR (cardio pulmonary resuscitation). We have a pool of talented rescue team here," he said.

Sonny also urges Dabawenyos to look at the broad picture that is the region. Not only is it home to Mt. Apo, the tallest peak in the county, it is also where Davao Gulf is located, one of the biggest gulf and home to denizens of the sea.

"We are the eco-adventure capital of the Philippines. We have to claim it before somebody else does. Rightfully, we have it all here. Nandito na sa atin lahat but nobody realizes it," he said.

Sonny said that economically, eco-adventure posts the fastest growth in tourism sector.

"At the end of the day, tourists will want to want to experience an outdoor adventure. After shopping and malling, tourists would want to see the beach or the natural parks.

His dedication to outdoor adventure activities has also made him open a one-stop shop booking and marketing office to make it convenient for everyone.

Adventure Exchange, located at the second floor of Robinsons Mall in Lanang, Davao City.

It is the booking office of Crocodile Park, which has the most recent farm design and equipped with modern facilities and equipment. The presence of other wildlife like raptors, monkeys, bearcats, snakes, birds and other reptiles has made it a must-see tourist destination in Davao.

Also located in within the Riverfront Corporate City along Diversion Road in Maa is the Davao Butterfly House where one can experience the spectacular metamorphosis of the cycle of a butterfly, from a larval caterpillar stage into a colorful winged adult form.

Of course there is the Davao Wild Water Adventure, a 13 kilometer whitewater rafting at Davao River. The tour starts at Crocodile Park inth morning and then back later in the afternoon.

Tribu K'Mindanawan meanwhile highlights the history of Mindanao while Ostrich Ranch lets one interact with the biggest bird in the world.

For those who love extreme outdoor sports, the office also offers bookings to ZipCity, a 320-meter zipline located in the highest point of Davao City with best panoramic view of Davao Gulf and Mt. Apo.

For those who love the sun and the sea, there is Maxima Aqua Fun and Canopy tours with its giant water slide in Barangay San Jose, Island Garden City of Samal.

Among the interesting finds at the Adventure Exchange are leather belts made from crocodile skin. Sonny says it has been gaining popularity among foreign tourists since they sell it at the cheapest price around the globe.

His love for the environment does not end there, however.

Sonny is also passionate about passing the ordinance that would regulate the use of plastic bags, especially in shopping malls.

"Plastic bags are insidious. They have nothing good to bring. The indiscriminate disposal of plastic bags kill marine life," he said.

He urges everyone, especially friends from the media, to help him in his campaign to urge business establishments to use cloth bags like the Green Bags, instead.

"The solid waste management ordinance encompasses a lot of areas. It has been a long process. But I feel we should prioritize the passing of regulating the use of plastic bags," he said.

Sonny says this has been possible in Marikina City and he feels positive that the ordinance will be enacted in Davao City soon.

What flight were you suppose to fly?

PR811 was scheduled for an A340 but got cancelled due to aircraft problem so it was merged with PR817, an a320 flight. Due to passenger load, B747 came to rescue. Registry was 7475, sure passengers enjoyed the full AVOD aircraft but flight was super delayed:) to add, some of the crew were International Line administrators:) haha

For more inquiries and for ticket purchase, please contact project coordinator Angely Chi at 0908-768-7121. (PR)

Ekran Berhad invests US$ 20 M to reopen Samal Casino Resort (http://www.election2010updates.com/2009/08/16/ekran-berhad-invests-us-20-m-to-reopen-samal-casino-resort/)
Posted on 16 August 2009

(PNA) — Ekran Berhad Sdn, a Malaysian conglomerate that owns a chain of big hotels, is set to re-open this year the Samal Casino Resort in the Island Garden City of Samal in Davao del Norte.

Secretary Jesus Dureza, Presidential Adviser on Mindanao and the Philippine Signing Minister for the Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines-East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA), said the revival of the casino resort was confirmed by its Malaysian owner, headed by Tan Sri Datuk Ting Pek Khiing, executive chairman of Ekran Berhad Sdn. during a recently held bilateral meeting between the Philippines and Malaysia in Brunei Darussalam.

Dureza said the P1.5 billion tourism complex in Samal’s Kaputian District would soon be back in full business.

He said the meeting was a side event of the BIMP-EAGA Roundtable Discussion on the Community-based Ecotourism (CBET) development, which was part of the week-long 18th BIMP-EAGA Senior Officials and 14th Signing Ministers meeting and other related events held in Brunei Darussalam on August 5-8.

Meanwhile, Ekran Berhad officials also said they were working on the revival of the Davao-Kota Kinabalu air link, in partnership with the Malaysian Airlines, which used to ply the route in 1990s before it folded up operations due to low passenger load.

“As a result of the meeting, we’re putting back on track the Samal Casino Resort. This is an indication of a sound business environment in Mindanao and across borders as there is now an opportunity to reconnect in the south,” Dureza said.

Dureza, along with Samal Mayor Aniano Antalan, Tourism Undersecretary Oscar Palabyab and Davao Del Norte Congressman Anton Lagdameo, met with Ekran Berhad officials in Brunei to discuss and agree on the most feasible arrangement that will facilitate the re-opening of the resort.

“This will surely boost tourism and employment opportunities and expected to generate P50 million in various taxes,” said Lagdameo, also chairperson of the House Committee on BIMP-EAGA Affairs.

In its bid to reopen the resort, Ekran Berhad Sdn. is set to infuse an estimated US$ 15 to US$ 20 million new capital investment.

“The plan to resume the operations of Ekran was based on sound business decision. Sa tingin nila maganda na ang business environment sa Mindanao,” said Trade Undersecretary Merly Cruz, the Philippine Senior Official for BIMP-EAGA.

The Samal Casino Resort, which sits on a 250-hectare area in Samal is about 30 minutes by boat from Sta. Ana wharf, Davao City, Mindanao’s premier economic hub.

The resort started operating as a hotel and casino in late 1997 with 300 rooms and a ballroom that could accommodate 3,000 people.

It is one of the large scale investments ushered by an agreement forged between Philippines and Malaysia in the early 1990’s under the BIMP-EAGA initiative. (PNA)

'Green' hotel to rise in Davao

DUBBED to be the first high-rise structure in Mindanao which has implemented environmentally-sound structure design and interiors, a “green” hotel is soon to rise in Davao City.

Named as Pinnacle Place, the 12-storey structure on Sta. Ana Avenue was designed in such manner that it utilizes natural light and allows cross ventilation on each floor.

"Going green is cheaper in the long run, it is very practical, and you have less impact on the environment," Arnold Tence, the upcoming general manager of Pinnacle Place, told Sun.Star Davao.

The hotel, which has yet to announce an opening date, will be using a LED (light emitting diode) lighting system, energy efficient air conditioning system, and elevators that require less energy than most being used.

"The hotel will be an actual application of what a sustainable facility is supposed to be," Tence said.

Also, the hotel will be utilizing locally sourced products, from the construction materials and the furnishings to be used, as part of its commitment to have a smaller carbon footprint.

The hotel will house 200 suites, eight function areas, two restaurants, a fitness center with pool, and a spa.

Pinnacle Place is part of the Central Parq Group of Hotels and was designed by Architect Mark Maximo Chan while interiors were made by Don Cabaog and his team Design Lab.
