Wadaboy August 30th, 2009, 01:16 PM Budget for expansion taken from internal funds: NCCC
Friday, August 28, 2009
THE secret behind the robust growth of homegrown retail distributor NCCC Group of Companies is that its funds for expansion are sourced internally.
At present, the NCCC Group is all set to open two more full-scale supermarkets in Davao City, one located in Calinan and the other in Panacan.
Post your prayers and condolences for Cory Aquino's family
"We rely on our internally generated funds," Paricio Bong Te, corporate planning manager of NCCC, said. "The banks are already coming to us to loan us money, but we refuse."
Despite what seems to be a rapid expansion of the NCCC Group, Te maintains that they are just expanding within their means.
"We do not have as much liquidity as bigger mall supermarket chains have, and we also do not want to expand rapidly as it might cause us to overheat," Te said.
Among the planned expansion of the NCCC Group is the development of its 6.6-hectare property in Panacan into a multi-use facility. Immediate plans include the opening of a supermarket by October and the construction of the main supermarket warehouse for all NCCC Supermarkets and its affiliates.
The group also plans to put up a business process outsourcing facility, department store

Do you mean biggest NCCC Mall?
If your answer is in the affirmative, then I would have to say that you are not correct.
The market in that city could no longer accommodate more shopping centers (based on our studies). It's just too small.
But hey, maybe Ayala's studies yielded a different result. Confirmed na sa local radio station, right?

PAL to add domestic flights
As part of an operation realignment plan, flagship carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL) will add domestic flights starting September as local demand for travel continues to soar.
In a statement yesterday, the Lucio C. Tan-led airline said new routes and destinations would be introduced next month. Daily flights for Cebu-Davao and Davao-Cebu destinations will be added, using the wide-bodied Airbus A330.
For the budget PAL Express airline, a daily flight will be added to the Cebu-Iloilo-Cebu flight using the 76-seater Q400 turboprop aircraft, while daily flights to Surigao and a twice-a-day service to Naga will also be introduced.
While the number of domestic passengers rose by 17% in the first quarter, the number of international passengers slipped by 8% amid slowing demand from the United States.
Under pressure to cut costs amid a global economic downturn, PAL said on Thursday that international flights would be reduced to match dipping passenger demand.

dinabaw August 31st, 2009, 04:13 AM Dabawenya hailed for role to Down syndrome awareness
Sunday, August 30, 2009
A DABAWENYA who had Down Syndrome was recognized by an international group for her contribution to the world awareness of the disability.
In the 10th World Down Syndrome Congress held on August 19-21 at Dublin, Ireland, the Down Syndrome International (DSI) acknowledged the contribution of the late Deanna C. Sipaco to people with Down Syndrome in the Philippines and the rest of the world.
For updates from around the country, follow Sun.Star on Twitter
The international group called the late Deanna as a "great advocate." Receiving the award in Deanna's behalf were his parents, Diana and Alberto Sipaco.
Deanna passed away on September 14, 2005 at the age of 33. But before dying, Deanna left a legacy that many of Dabawenyos suffering from Down Syndrome are now enjoying.
For one, her parents started the DS (Deanna Sipaco) Foundation for the Differently Abled Incorporated, which is a non-stock, non-profit non-government organization catering to social and self-actualization needs of special persons.
Deanna was also invited in various national and international events where talents of persons with Down Syndrome are featured. She was into painting and her paintings had gone all over the world.
In one of her engagements in Japan, Deanna was able to have a tete-a-tete with the royal family of Japan. Deanna also gave Princess Masako one of her paintings as a gift, which the princess gladly accepted.
Despite her demise, Deanna's parents continued her legacy by granting scholarships to persons with Down Syndrome and autism.
Diana Sipaco said they are now teaching arts, sports, dance, theater art, and music. In their eight years of operation, the Sipacos said they never asked fees from the parents of their scholars.
They spend about P300,000 annually to run the foundation and they source it from their own pockets. During their visit to Ireland, officials of the DSI plan to help the foundation so that they could help more kids with Down Syndrome and autism.
Fe Viduya, mother of 17-year-old Ken who has Down Syndrome, said the DS Foundation is a big help to them, especially because they do not have enough money to pay for his special education.
The mother of 13-year-old Jose Patal said that even though her child is enrolled in a special school in Bangkal, she still makes it a point to bring Jose to the DS Foundation every Saturday for his art class. She said that aside from painting, Jose is also very knowledgeable in computers.
"He surfs the Net, has accounts in Friendster and Facebook and looks at Youtube. He also knows how to use Adobe Photoshop," the mother said.
Parents in the DS Foundation are one in saying that their children have improved a lot, especially in their socialization. Saturday has also become the most look-forward-to day of the week since they know that they will once again meet their friends and together express themselves to the world through painting, just like what Deanna did. City to put up info on do's and don'ts
Sunday, August 30, 2009
THE City Government of Davao is joining the bandwagon of government agencies placing infomercials in media outlets as a way to promote what they had achieved so far.
But the city will deviate from the usual promotion of personalities and instead focus on its ordinances that must be followed strictly.
Like the Bible's Ten Commandments, the city's infomercial will contain information on ordinances like the Anti-Smoking, the Women's Development Code, the Children's Code, and other ordinances that are unique in Davao.
City Administrator Wendel Avisado said they will be placing billboards with their infomercials in key areas in the city so as to constantly remind the people of the do's and don'ts while in Davao City.
The city official admitted that some of their agencies are not enforcing the ordinances 24/7. He said that with the infomercials, people are always reminded of the ordinances that they have to follow lest face arrest or fine.
Latest ordinance of the city is the anti-spitting ordinance that prohibits spitting in public places.
Avisado said the ordinance is high time, especially with the proliferation of different diseases that can be transmitted through the saliva.
"That is an ordinance na dapat dawaton gyud nato. Law-ay man gyud nang tao na bisan asa lang muluwa. Scientific studies showed that pinaagi sa laway ma-transmit ang mga sakit. Dawaton nato kana sa atong maayong kabubut-on kay makatabang man na (that we should all welcome. People spitting anywhere are an eyesore and scientific studies have shown that diseases can be transmitted from spits. The ordinance is for our own good)," Avisado said. (BOT)

THE use of women to promote products like cigarettes and alcoholic beverages in several bars and entertainment establishments in Davao City violates the city's Women Code.

Women wearing body-hugging outfit and "very short shorts" are seen doing the rounds in many bars of the city selling mostly cigarettes.
City Councilor Mabel Sunga-Acosta said the city's Women Development Code specifically prohibits use of women in the promotion of products like cigarettes and alcoholic beverages.
City Ordinance 5004 or the Women Development Code of Davao City prohibits the "commodification of women," defined as "a practice which puts women in subordinate situation which results in the treatment of women as both consumer goods and objects."
Companies or establishments caught in violation of the ordinance are fined P5,000 or its business permit cancelled. (BOT)

Savoring Selera
This new Davao resto deserves another visit or two

There’s a boutique hotel and commercial complex under development on the corner of Legaspi St. and Rizal in Davao City called Legaspi Suites which highlights a beautiful postwar ancestral home in their courtyard. Surrounding the complex is an arcade of shops and one of its occupants is a quaint café called Kusina Selera that just opened and is on dry run.
I would usually let time pass before I visit and review a restaurant to let the staff bloom to their full efficiency. But curiosity did take the better of me, after I had gone and checked out the menu. The place which had Old World but chic interiors based on clean and cheerful lines was as well lit and as cordial as its staff and owner.
Peeping through the servings placed on the tables of the diners, I saw that the kitchen, based on a speedy “eyeball” judgment, seemed to know and care about the very straightforward Filipino classics and some creative house specialties they were serving.
Having made a mental note of this visit, it was decided that we would come back after three days. But the intrigue was just too much and I found myself there the next evening. And again, I found myself ordering too much to the surprise of our waiter, Dexter who seemed baffled at how a normal dinner date could pack so much in. (Little did he know that over ordering seems to be the reason why this column is thriving.)
Anyway, our waiter and all the other wait staff seemed to know their menu items well, enough to recommend dishes. I didn’t order from the appetizer menu, as I found the starters, which the management states are temporary, to be lacking in luster. The items seemed to be what “everybody” likes or what you will find in almost every restaurant in Davao.
However, I did go for a Tuna Sisig, which although is stereotypically overplayed, is a dish that many restaurants and bars would get high ratings for, if it were a review on cat food.
Kusina Selera’s Tuna Sisig in my list takes great marks. It was creamy, lightly, sweetish and moist with just the right amount of chili heat for the beer guzzler or the rice eater. It started dinner on a correct note, as we also ordered a Pomelo Salad to start with. The salad was anointed with a fish sauce dressing topped with peanuts and had shreds of orange pink semi-ripe papaya and sliced deseeded tomatoes that refreshed and prepared us for the next round of dishes.
The Kare Kare in this establishment can be a benchmark on how well the owners and the kitchen take to Filipino cuisine. The tripe and oxtail are simmered to tenderness while the vegetables are timed to be served at their prime and not limp state. The sauce is not over and sickeningly peanutty but subtle and truly goes in the classification of homey, comfort food.
Our vegetable dish is what they called Sigasig, short for sitao, gabi and sigadillas. This simple dish of vegetables tossed in a thick, spicy coconut cream again showed the kitchen’s competence in serving vegetables. The sitao or yard beans with the sigadillas or winged beans were pristine, green and crunchy while the gabi or taro was “to the bite” with a light, sliding mouthfeel coming from its starch.
Our other dish, which was tempting and seemed to appeal to more primeval instincts, was the Crispy Beef Rib. I mentioned it as singular because it literally was a hefty 10-inch crispy rib serving on your plate. It seemed to give off the same primitive appeal as when one orders a prime rib or porterhouse. The crisp fat and outer areas of beef on this rib, eaten simply with rice and dipped in their sweetish chili soy dip, was ethereal with the creamy crunchy layers of fat and crunchy meat ripped from its bone.
Dessert seemed to be a creative area with this restaurant. We ordered a flight of three desserts and all were petite enders, perhaps in anticipation of bigger courses. The sweetness of the desserts was also pleasantly controlled and not changing at all.
Tres leches was a creamy maja blanca topped with corn for texture, crisp dessicated coconut, and rough shaved cheese as a salty foil to the sweetness and as a second milk type to the coconut cream and cream mix in the dessert. The result was a workable interplay of tastes and texture that are Filipino yet modern in character.
Similar to this modern Filipino style was the Caramel Tapioca sweetened with raw brown sugar or panocha gelled together. This was topped with homemade chocnut ice cream which gave richness to a somewhat plebeian concept of sago.
Last and worthy of mention, was the Buchitaw, which was a concept between buchi (fried mochi) and palitaw. This poached rice dumpling stuffed with light bean paste was rolled half in roasted sesame seeds and desiccated coconut. In true spirit, this was very Asian and I felt that the concept should be pursued more. A little more bean paste would probably highlight this delightful meal ender. This restaurant should get top marks because you have to start fresh with making this dessert which requires lots of kneading and hard work.
Overall, Kusina Solera, I believe (having sampled a worthy representation of what the kitchen have to offer), deserves several more visits as their menu promises other forthcoming dishes. But next time, I’m bringing a group for sharing and not over ordering for two again. My dinner companion had gone home early, and I was kept guessing as to the reason why.

Judge, 114 others canspend Christmas in Magallanes Residences condominium
Monday, 24 August 2009 18:03
by Antonio M. Ajero
Rufino Ferraris Jr., single, presiding judge of Davao City’s, Municipal Trial Court in Cities (MCTCC) Branch 7, will be one of the more than a hundred personalities who are expected to spend their Christmas this year in the Magallanes Residences, particularly in the first of three medium-rise condominiums of DMC Urban Property Developers, Inc. along historic Bolton Street in Davao City. The seven-storey condo, named Valencia Building, will be ready for occupancy by December, according to engineer Leonora Gutierrez, DMC UPDI area manager. Valencia Building has a total of 115 units, more than half of which have been sold out.
It was open house day for the Magallanes Residences last Monday. Msgr. Paul Cuison blessed the condominium’s marker, the newly completed gate and driveway, the clubhouse with its air-conditioned function room, coffee shop, outdoor party area, playground, gym and swimming pool and the company’s property management office (PMO). “This day also marks other milestones in the life of DMCI in the city,” according to architect Victoria J. Adriano, general manager, who bared the company was awarded by Housing Land Use Regulatory Board (HLURB) XI a development permit to start constructing Barcelona, the second building of the project.
On the same day, Adriano said, the firm was likewise given by the Davao City government the go-signal to start developing Hacienda, a nine-hectare high-end property in Catalunan Pequeno, which will be in two phases.
Adriano also announced that state-of-the-art equipment for the gym will arrive sometime in September to be installed at the second floor of the clubhouse. The clubhouse will also house the property management office (PMO) at the basement, where the CR and showers are also located. The blessing rites were graced with the presence of Councilors Peter T. Lavina and Arnulfo Cabling, lawyer Aster Cruzabra, Bien Garcia, DMC UPDI Vice President Jose L. Merin, Judge Ferraris and Ms Brigida Cualing, who had also bought a unit in the Ecoland 4000, the first medium-rise condo project of DM Consunji at the back of SM City in Davao City.
Judge Ferraris, who still has 10 years in the judiciary before retirement, plans to move in as soon as the Valencia building is ready. This means leaving and selling his 25-year old bungalow in Flores Subdivision in flood-prune sitio Bangkal. The MTCC judge bought a 64-sq m unit at the corner of the first floor facing the clubhouse.
Of all the amenities, Judge Ferraris loves the swimming pool the most.
“I like it here because it’s near everything,” the judge said, marveling at how close the condo was to City Hall, City Council, Museo Dabawenyo, the Register of Deeds office, the stores and eateries along San Pedro, and, of course, the St. Peter’s Cathedral.
The community will also be very secured, said the judge, who is originally from Iloilo City. Other condo unit buyers are Ms Cualing, contractor Ramon Allado, and other prominent businessmen and professionals in the cities of Davao, General Santos, Koronadal and Cotabato. There are foreign buyers too, Gutierrez said. Each condo building will have two elevators. Open house day was also an occasion to hold a brokers’ meeting, where the brokers were briefed by engineer Gutierrez on the new developments, new payment schemes, promos and other freebies for brokers and buyers. “We have this promo we call Kadayawan Gift Getaway for three days-two nights’ stay with breakfast at Alta Vista de Boracay, another beautiful project of DMCI,” Gutierrez said.

Editorial: Buhayin ang Times beach
Sunday, August 30, 2009
THE City Tourism Operations Office is up to something these days: "Buhayin ang Times Beach."
Initial meeting with the restaurant, resort and bar owners in the area have already been held as can be gleaned from CTO chief Bong Aportadera's hints and next to be gathered are the residents for concerns regarding security, sanitation, and solid waste management.
For updates from around the country, follow Sun.Star on Twitter
There's reason to cheer the mere fact that there is such an effort. Those who have been residents of Davao in the 1970s will always recall Times Beach with fondness, for it is there where families held picnics and teeners escaped to during school hours.
It was a long stretch of beach that had a smattering of mangrove trees including a giant one just near the pavilion, the exposed roots of which were a source of fascination for children because of the softness of the woody outcrops. It is at Times Beach too when Davao's children learned to make sand balls, an unacknowledged and yet very much-practiced rite of passage to becoming a true-blue Dabawenyo and a big boy/girl. It wasn't just Times in fact, but also in every beach area in the city -- Talomo and the erstwhile popular Salakot Beach, Daliao with Calolot Beach, and much later the Villa Victoria in Dumoy, and St. John's Beach in Binugao, Toril, to name a few. Davao's children were the children of the sun and sand and the makers of sandballs and sand castles.
The mess that these beaches are in now except for some very few resorts that managed to escape the mass exodus of informal settlers, the unplanned seaside development, the indiscriminate building of structures without regard for a building's sewage and sewerage have made these beaches what they are now -- bodies of water with high coliform content as manifested by the smell of urea in the sea breeze.
Our memories of Times Beach, however, should be enough for all Dabawenyos to rally for this project; not to pinpoint who is at fault for the urban sink that it has become but to collectively revive what has been lost -- a beach area that is just a few minutes away from downtown Davao with a wide expanse of shallow waters perfect for toddlers to play in and skim boarders to romp on and the finest black sand to make millions of sand balls and sand castles with.
How this project will turn out to be will all depend on how we respond to the call. First on the list might be to make the place safe and hip for lounging around for lunch and dinner with the beach as a major attraction. As it is now, the few places you can have dinner in the area do not even allow a view of and access to the beach as it has become risky to walk around in especially at night. That too says a lot about what Times has become.

Sunday, August 23, 2009
THE government is earmarking P60 million to pave the way of the re-opening of the Ekran Berhad Sdn-owned casino resort in the Island Garden City of Samal by December this year.
The Samal Casino Resort in the Island Garden City of Samal stopped operations in 2000 due to the global financial crisis.
For updates from around the country, follow Sun.Star on Twitter
In an interview with Sun.Star Davao during the height of the Kadayawan festivities, Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano said the government, through the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), will be completing the road network in the area and other infrastructure developments, one of the agreements of the Malaysian conglomerate and the government.
"We will also be installing a water system, another request, of the group, but the more expensive is the infrastructure aspect," Durano said.
The Tourism secretary was in Davao City over the weekend for the Mindanao Travel and Tour Expo 2009 at the Davao Convention and Trade Center.
Undelivered
In a visit to the said resort Friday, Presidential Assistant for Mindanao Jesus Dureza said Ekran Berhad Sdn owner, Tan Sri Datuk "Dr" Ting Pek Khiing, wanted to reopen the multi-billion peso resort by December 2009.
Dureza said the Philippine Tourism Authority (PTA) is the leading agency tasked to complete the road which was never delivered until the closing of the casino resort in 2000.
"That is why we are now looking at the experiences of the past and learn from them," he said.
Dureza revealed that if the PTA could still not muster enough fund for the construction of the four-kilometer road, the owner of the resort himself offered to shoulder the cost provided that it be deducted from the future taxes the resort will pay the Philippine government.
Dureza said Ekran Berhad had already invested P1.5 billion in the construction of the posh resort that has a world-class casino, 300 hotel rooms, grand ballroom and other world-class amenities. He said another P1-billion investment is expected from the Malaysian company once they develop their golf course.
Dureza said Ekran Berhad is already allotting P500 million for the rehabilitation of the Samal Casino Resort, which has been left unattended by almost nine years after its closure.
The resort obviously needs a repainting, minor reconstruction as some of its wood materials have already been destroyed by termites; its dike was also destroyed by the strong waves. (CPM/Sunnex)

A breath of fresh air
Written by: Fernandez , Ed
Tuesday, 01 September 2009
ACCIDENTALLY, I met Milen Garcia, this older sister of Congressman Vince Garcia at a local hotel here owned by her relative. I was there to meet friends from Cebu who were doing business in Davao, and I was introduced to her.
I asked for enough time to know her and converse with her. I said for my column in Minda Times. And she made herself available. I had so many questions and she answered them with the spunk of a gentle lady who knows her stuff. She is not a lawyer for nothing.
Milen is not just another lawyer in town. She is a bar topnocher. In the 1990 bar, Milen placed 3rd, a feat of a lady from Davao I didn’t really know. I didn’t know that Nonoy Garcia had a daughter who is a lawyer. Not only that, she exemplifies the kind of leadership in Ateneo de Manila University where she studied law and where she received the prestigious Evilio B, Javier Leadership Award.
Milen has a very impressive credential. She graduated her law degree in Ateneo de Manila, placed 3rd in the 1990 bar, a recipient of many awards in Ateneo de Manila, an extensive government exposure having worked with the DENR as Assistant Secretary for General Legal services, Executive Assistant to the Chairman of the Energy Regulatory Commission, Assistant Secretary for Local Government Affairs, among others.
And this is one thing I learned from Milen that caught my curiosity. For three years, she was the chief of staff of Senator Mar Roxas. I was told that Mr Roxas demands so much from his staff and he wants exceptional people to be with him in order to deliver the basic services to the people.
As a person, Milen cuts as someone gentle, soft spoken but very strong in her faith and beliefs and very tough and certain when explaining terms and ideas. She is so at home with the workings of government and how services should be delivered.
At this time when people are demanding for a new kind of politics, Milen is a fresh air, a gentle wind in a highly humid political atmosphere of the country. She could be the nemesis of the “trapos” and “manoys” in the political firmament of the country if she wants to try politics.
Milen promised to have another interview with her, Not an accidental one so “ i could get the answers to my other questions”. I hope that was not the last. Milen is a strong force to reckon if she wants to join the fray in the 2nd congressional district.

Hi, Sir Rajah! Nabanhaw lagi ka!? :)
dinabaw September 2nd, 2009, 03:22 AM Kayak expedition en route to Davao
Tuesday, September 1, 2009
GUMASA, Sarangani -- The Friendship Kayak expedition team that left the white sands of Gumasa in Glan Monday is expected to reach Davao City, their first major rest stop, on Sunday or Monday.
"We will be organizing a grand welcome for the paddlers," said Toby Martin, who keeps track of the expedition.
For updates from around the country, follow Sun.Star on Twitter
Early on in the expedition, the Friendship Kayak support boat anchored at Tinaca Point Tuesday to prepare lunch for paddlers following behind were hit by sudden squall, smashing the boat against rocks resulting in a four-inch diameter hole in the hull.
"Support boatmen have started repairs with an emergency supply of marine epoxy they have stocked," Martin said.
Singapore's leading adventurer Khoo Swee Chiow, with two of the Philippine's finest kayakers Erwin "Buzzy" Budlong of Cebu and Arnel Gabutero of Davao City, is on the first-ever attempt to kayak the entire length of the Philippines from Glan, Sarangani that will end 3,300 kilometers away in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte in a span of 100 days.
Members of the team claimed "this is the longest kayak expedition" they will ever attempt.
The team camped in Margus, Glan on Monday evening after Khoo and Budlong capsized once while Gabutero in his less stable racing kayak suffered more capsizes, forcing them to beach at one point to bail water.
Tuesday's planned mileage was approximately 30 kilometers to Jose Abad Santos, Davao del Sur.
Supported by the Department of Tourism (DOT), the expedition also commemorates the 40th anniversary of Singaporean-Philippine friendship to promote kayaking as a sport in the country.
Davao's own Gabutero already embarked on a long-distance kayaking expedition last year to drum up attention on marine turtle and dugong conservation.
Gabutero set off alone from the village of New Argao in Malita, Davao Del Sur on April 29, 2008 aboard his kayak and successfully ended his journey, which was sponsored by the local government, in Punta Dumalag in Davao City on May 1.
New Argao is the coastal barangay where dugongs are regularly sighted, while Punta Dumalag is Davao City's turtle conservation site being a nesting site of the endangered hawksbill turtle.
Khoo is an extreme outdoor adventurer who has climbed Mt. Everest twice, and the North and South Poles and holds the world records for the longest scuba dive and longest journey on inline skates.
"It's about having a dream and making it happen," Khoo explained in a pre-departure interview. "A lot of people see Everest and say it's too hard, too difficult (to climb), but if you look at my history, I started with small mountains. They should start with where they are and slowly climb higher and higher as your dreams will get bigger and bigger as you gain more experience."
Khoo said the "Friendship Kayak Expedition" was planned out with some comrades during his previous visit in the country in September 2008.
Khoo said this is "a good angle to promote friendship and a new challenge" for him physically and mentally.
"What is more challenging," he said, "is that the waves here are much bigger."
Khoo went through eight months of training in Singapore for this expedition.
Budlong said they have considered the risks but he is not hesitant as long as they "work as a team and (we) do not go against the flow of the shore."
"Every 15 minutes the waves change," Budlong said. "Partly we have studied the route but we cannot really predict the weather." (Beverly Paoyon and Macky Macavinta of Sarangani Info Office)

Hari Royale Hotel is almost done na eh. I think the one at the back of Sta. Ana Church is the HCDC Dormitel you are talking about.

Good to hear. I mean, where else in Mindanao would they logically branch out but in Davao di ba? Given the urban amenities, accessibility, market base, and contact facilities, to name a few, Davao would really be the most logical option in Mindanao. :)

MtApoStandard September 2nd, 2009, 05:30 PM One Network Bank acquires rural bank
DAVAO CITY — One Network Bank has folded in the Rural Bank of New Corella based in Davao del Norte, further extending the reach of Mindanao’s largest rural bank.
Alex V. Buenaventura, bank president, said the acquisition will allow One Network Bank to expand its loan services to other areas in Davao del Norte, particularly to entities engaged in banana farming.
"We will be able to increase our loans to the banana industry," Mr. Buenaventura told BusinessWorld in a text message.
The acquisition raised One Network Bank’s assets to P1.534 billion from P1.531 billion. It also fulfilled the central bank’s wish for fewer but bigger rural banks.
The memorandum of agreement on the deal was signed on August 10 by Mr. Buenaventura and officials of the other rural bank. It was approved during the banks’ stockholders meeting on August 24.

mrboy September 3rd, 2009, 05:57 PM Savemore stores eye Mindanao for expansion
by Prix D. Banzon
Davao City (4 September) -- With 18 Savemore stores already operating around the Philippines there are plans for expansion in key cities of Mindanao.
But Supervalue Inc. (SM Supermarket) ads and promo manager Marlowe Singson at Marco Polo Davao's Club 888 Forum on Wednesday did not give details saying that negotiations are ongoing.
She said the South is part of the plan and at the rate it is going 7 stores were opened in 2008 and another 7 or 8 stores within the year and more will be coming.
Total number of stores to date is at 44 with 26 SM Supermarkets and 18 Savemore Stores. 13 of the stores are in Manila and other parts of Luzon while 3 in Cebu and 2 in Iloilo.
She said Savemore Stores is a stand alone full service supermarket owned and operated by SM Supermarket.
The store brings in convenient shopping experience closer to home because aside from buying their basic needs they can also do bills payment or even send their remittances from there in its customer service counters, she said.
SM Supermarket in Mindanao are now present in Davao City and Cagayan de Oro City although there are plans for expansion also of the SM Malls for another complex in Davao City and in General Santos City.
Davao City Councilor Peter Lavina, council committee chair on trade and commerce said Davao City remains bullish on businesses more particularly on real property projects.
He said they saw the coming of big businesses for the next two years and among them is SM's expansion project in Davao City towards north. (PIA) [top]

Blue Goat Cheese
It seemed like it was only yesterday when I first met Olive Puentespina in her little booth at a food trade exhibit in Davao, where I was totally smitten by her feta and pecorino-style cheeses from their goat farm. Besides what I thought was a darn good product, I also saw the fire of enthusiasm in the eyes of a true artisan and innovator, which are rare persons you don’t often meet. These are people who are not afraid to swim in unexplored waters and believe in their product.
She started with her husband, raising goats of the Boer variety which are large and bred for their meat because of their size. Unfortunately, the goat’s sensitivity to the high mineral content of the grass in the farm forced the couple to crossbreed them with Anglo Nubians. They suddenly had a sizeable surplus of milk, and this led to her making feta and fresh goat cheese. People who sampled her first cheeses were astounded with the quality, and eventually, she teamed up with Karin Carmona of PIECO to market her cheeses in Metro Manila.
By 2006, her cheese was cited by the Cheese Club of the Philippines as Cheese of the Month. She received an award of excellence in a trade fair and her cheeses were served on board Philippine Airlines business class by 2008.
I’m very proud to say that I was a partial contributor to her growing up by asking her to cross the line and make for me her first big wheels, which I served for my birthday alongside foreign cheeses. These huge wheels, which were aged for another three months, became such scene stealers that you will now find them on wine tastings and hotel buffets.
This year was a crossroad for Olive, who with the same fire and passion went on a cheese journey and attended lectures on artisanal cheese making abroad. Eventually, she ended up as a resource speaker, because her non-classic methods baffled cheese makers, such as making cheese at 35 degrees Celsius which supposedly derails sound cheese making principles.
Recently, I was invited to the Malagos Garden Resort, owned by the Puentespinas, in Calinan for a preview of new cheeses she was ready to launch and developing. Over lunch, it was clear how the artisanal and entrepreneurial spirit is cultivated among the Puentespina family whose focus is on their farm produce.
Lunch was simple and straightforward, but almost all that was served had emanated from the farm. We started out with a fresh salad basket of newly-harvested French beans, watercress, cherry tomatoes, and slivers of fresh kesong puti that was infused with green peppercorn and some with basil, which will be exclusive to Philippine Airlines. A tasty main course of grilled free-range Sasso chicken and some smoky pork ribs kept us on an enjoyable discussion on the qualities of Calinan chocolate and cacao.
We then had fruits like langka, durian, and chicos, all harvested from the farm. And to keep up with the Malagos-themed lunch, we had a pure tabliya chocolate cake, which boasted of the qualities of cacao grown in the area and had a beautiful balance of fruitiness, earthiness, spice, and winey appeal.
I cannot fully express the delight I felt when I was shown the variety of cheeses that she had ready as commercial samples. I could safely say that she could be the first Philippine cheese master, having created all these varieties that are unique in themselves and world class. It was a pity I did not bring good wines or even a stash of Belgian beers to pair with such wonderful creations.
Here is a list of cheeses from that private preview (our foodie readers don’t have to be jealous because by the time they read this article, many of her cheeses will be available. Call Karin Carmona at 892 8286/752 3330 or email her at karincarmona@yahoo.com and olivepp_ph@yahoo.com.):
Classic Cheeses
These cheeses are Olive’s mainstays and the first cheeses that she produced.
Feta. Sharp and tangy with a mild bite and not as salty as traditional feta, Olive is passionate about this one. She describes it as taking a trip to the Amalfi Coast or the Mediterranean whenever you taste it.
Chevre. This French-style goat cheese is lightly crumbly with small particles, with light acid, and good for spreading.
Kesong Puti Style. Less acidic with a silky mouthfeel, it is lightly chewy and great for slicing and salads.
Pecorino Type. This cheese is excellent for grating, but is sometimes a little too dry for plain eating. Blending it with cheese sauces will give the sauce a good boost.
New Cheeses
These are cheeses that had come out in the past two years and some that are to be launched.
Blue Goat. This is a medium-textured cheese surrounded by a blue mold and has mild flavor due to its uninfected interior. Personally, I recommend punching micro holes in this cheese to infect the interior. I had this after four months of aging and it sure beats a lot of the Danish and Spanish medium blue cheeses.
Aged Pepato. Made from aged cow’s milk with green peppercorns, this is one of my favorites and has gained a lot of international respect among cheese makers and cheese masters. Complex and winey with brined olive, fermented flavors, and meaty notes, it is delicious melted or grilled.
PAL Cheese. This one is silky and velvety with light chewy attributes and infused with herbs and spices like basil, rosemary, and pepper, among others. Unfortunately, it might not be available to mere mortals who can’t afford business class.
Blush. This cheese is marinated in Malagos bignay wine and has complex flavors of dried fruit and fermented flavors mixing with the creaminess of cheese, which gives character to this creation.
Goat Camembert. On its maiden launch, it has an angelic white mold exterior, with grassy, flowery flavors and a creamy interior with the lightest hint of goat.
Manchego. This cheese is sharp, with medium hardness, light flavors reminiscent of goat, and traces of nuttiness.
Experimental Prototypes
These are future cheeses that we pre-tasted, and according to Olive, need a little work.
Blue Manchego. Made from a goat and cow’s milk blend with a medium texture, light blue streaks give this cheese another dimension to the sharpness of the Manchego style. Of course, since I am a lover of ripe cheeses, I prefer this two or three months more, when it is fully veined.
Blue Pecorino. Another hard blue cheese experiment that has very good potential, it is unfortunate that its blue veining is uneven and inconsistent, and has a hard time invading or infecting the cheese because of its hardness.
Fromage Pres. A stroke of genius on Olive’s part, this one is a fresh cheese that is immediately served after it has been hung and removed of its whey. This is a scattered unshaped cheese, an incurred form, which is very much like ancient homemade cheeses served after fermentation. I hope that she sells this already, because it has a long shelf life anyway.
Lord of the Stink. I had this prototype a long time ago, which I served to some cheese lovers and wine aficionados who actually found the cheese with “character” but not at all that stinky. I don’t think Olive will be able to create this cheese again because the aroma produced by this cheese takes over her whole aging room. But, I still think this is one of the best cheeses she has ever produced. However, it is definitely not for the uninitiated.

PRACTICE not doing and everything will fall into place…The Master does nothing, yet leaves nothing undone…Act without doing; work without effort. So the sage Lao Tzu wrote some 2,500 years ago before disappearing for good into the Chinese wilderness. If you are lucky and have been traveling a lot, you can turn up pieces of Lao Tzu’s opus and the school of thought it originated almost everywhere, from mass-produced pocket editions (I got mine from a book sale in National Bookstore) to coffee cups and tee shirts, embraced with the same mushy New Age fervor that’s been devoted to crystal healings and aromatherapies. But the old master’s teachings remain as hard, as revolutionary, and as paradoxical as when he wrote them down on his way out of the world. And you can see some of them put to practice in this country with the bahala na ang Dios mentality, surprisingly, a most likely place for this kind of philosophy to flourish but taken in a different cultural context. Sadly, things don’t really fall into place here most of the time.
But there is also the kind of quietism in Lao Tzu’s masterpiece of a paradox called the Tao Te Ching put to good practice by Jan Michael Tiukinhoy Pamintuan, a young, professional graphic designer/artist. Who is Jan Michael “JM” Tiukinhoy Pamintuan? That you may have to ask illuminates master Lao’s points — Express yourself completely, then keep quiet. He who tries to shine dims his own light. JM embodies this sense of paradox, unconsciously for sure. His young generation may not have heard of Lao Tzu. But then again, he must have imbibed the Lao Tzu philosophy from his studies in Singapore.
An increasingly busy artist, JM doesn’t seem to be interested in the trappings of fame and success that a job like his mother dearest Ann Tiukinhoy-Pamintuan’s can bring. Last Tuesday, when I accidentally bumped into him at the Museo Davaoeño where he was setting up his first formal solo exhibit in Davao City, he arrived in a car driven by his brother-in-law, Ohmar Ebrahim, and had devoted sister Jo-Ann Marie Pamintuan-Ebrahim as his ever so dutiful assistant. In a well-worn jeans and tee-shirt ensemble, this handsome mestizo bunso of Ann Tiukinhoy-Pamintuan can almost blend into the Davao background.
JM T. Pamintuan established his own individual interactive portfolio called Nemi Studio (NS) three years ago. He has a diploma in Digital Visual Effects and Animation specializing in Modeling from the 3D Sense Media School of the School of Interactive Visual Arts in Singapore. JM also has a 2-year Associate Degree in 3D Animation from the School of Design and Arts of the De La Salle-College of St. Benilde in Manila. He is truly privileged to have attended numerous trainings and seminars in the Philippines, Singapore, Canada, Japan and the USA. And yes, he has worked for various firms both in Manila and Davao, including his family’s the Gilded Expression, Inc., a design-oriented export company headed by no less than Mother Superior Ann.
“My present objective is to be a part of an established company that will develop my potential in Graphic Design, Illustration, 3D Modeling, Post Production, Visual Compositing, 3D Animation and Motion Graphics,” said the 27-year-old artist after much coaxing to sound off. The angst-ridden artist doesn’t talk much in his serious observance of Lao Tzu’s quietism. “JM isn’t that sociable with people he doesn’t really know. But if he gets to like and trust you, he will keep you forever,” defends his mother dearest.
JM’s on-going exhibit at the Museo Davaoeño is the new generation’s kind of genre art produced with the aid of the computer. It sort of reminded me of the dark, futuristic movie, the Blade Runner, which was once every Japanese architect’s inspiration and icon for global architecture of the future. The exhibit has JM’s imaginative story to tell as well. “Within a temple of a Forbidden City, the Keeper stands tall to defend humanity from the onslaught of the evil forces…The skies darken…She takes off her visor and focuses on what looms towards her. The three stones she protects glow behind her. They symbolize the significance of Fire, Water, and Wind….The fire stone — courage, sacrifice, passion. The water stone —glory, dark, bullet…..The wind stone — nature, paradise, creative intelligence…As the last hero combines the stones to create the perfect key to save the world,” wrote JM of his exhibit which has a remarkable video presentation of the whole progress of the story from concept to 3D.
“As you can see, my brother is a natural talent. He has a long-standing passion for creativity; and is strongly committed to his art,” said the beaming and proud kuya, Kim T. Pamintuan, when asked about his brother’s work. Sister Jo-Ann is proud of the significant progression in JM’s exhibited works from his earlier ones. “JM is inspired with sci-fi and manga and even futuristic architecture which have a big influence on his style and techno tribe. He is always interested in anything that’s about new ideas,” Jo-Ann said. While the young artist’s mother just kept complaining that she had to take a good hold of herself from acting like a stage mother. My, but Ann T. Pamintuan had a restraining order from her elder kids from giving her own artistic suggestions in JM’s exhibit. After all, JM had made clear from the start, “This is my exhibit!” Instead, Mother Superior Ann was tasked to prepare the cocktails. Of course, she complied happily with the able support of JM’s dotting aunt, Alice Pamintuan, and loving cousin, Marijac Pamintuan. Miraculously, JM was smiling shyly during his opening. Thanks, goodness, he didn’t wear his favorite cap to cover his face.
Please, do check out Jan Michael Tiukinhoy Pamintuan’s exhibit at the Museo Davaoeño. Congratulations, JM. May the artistic force be always with you.

THE CITY government left an impression on the members of the Thailand’s Action on Smoking and Health Foundation who met with local officials to compare notes on the implementation of their respective anti-smoking laws.
Led by its executive secretary, Professor Prakit Vathesogkit, the visitors had a dialogue with the Anti-Smoking Task Force of Davao City to see if there are gaps in the implementation of the ordinance against smoking.
“We wanted to observe how Davao City government act on the smoke-free campaign,” Vathesogkit said, noting that Thailand passed the smoke-free law in 1992.
“We hope we could gain a lesson after the study,” Vathesogkit said.
Thailand is the second country to visit the city to study its implementation of the smoking ordinance, with Vietnam being the first.
In the meeting, the co-chair of the task force, Dr. Domilyn C. Villareiz, told the visitors that the police had apprehended 690 violators from January until July this year and 1,800 violators last year.
The task force, chaired by Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, was created by Executive Order 26 after the Comprehensive Anti-Smoking Ordinance of Davao City took effect in 2002.
“As of two weeks ago, the police had recently apprehended more than 50 violators and most of them pleaded guilty. However, we would not do physical apprehension as we would not embarrass the offenders,” said Marvin Melodias, a member of the task force. “We just book them and file them directly to the Regional Trial Court,”
He said authorities conduct periodic and random inspections and another 300 traffic enforcers will be deputized in order to help enforce the ordinance.
The official also noticed a shift in the manner businesses follow the ordinance as more smoke-free establishments have emerged from the previous smoke-regulated ones. However, he admitted the tobacco industries are still devising strategies to sell more cigarettes by recruiting beautiful women.
“Aside from the violation of the ordinance, we will also charge them ‘exploitation’ as they used pretty girls to sell cigarettes,” Melodias said.
After hearing the presentations, the visitors were impressed by the efficiency of implementation of the ordinance.
“I see that the enforcers here are stronger than the enforcers in Thailand,” Vathesogkit said.

Looking back, i used to dream for Davao to have the tallest and the biggest ek ek, well i ll be hypocrite if until now i would say im not into it - i still would love to see one, but Im pretty much satisfied with the developments in Davao today. Although we only have alot of midrises, ayos lang yan. Atleast sustainable ang development. Pretty soon, we will soon have high rises in Davao. However, having highrises doesnt really equates to a good quality of lifestyle. I want to have both. ;)

Help educ fund for poor kids in Paquibato: Duterte

MAYOR Rodrigo Duterte urged the city council to pass an enabling ordinance and allocated P3 million to support the educational fund of the Task Force Davao for the studies and skills development of qualified children in Paquibato District.
Speaking at the regular City Peace and Order Council meeting yesterday, the mayor lauded the TF Davao for initiating leadership and educational drive for the youth.
“Through education, we can open up their minds to the vast opportunities being offered by skills specialization, which can provide them jobs and eventually income to uplift their way of life,” he said.
He said the strategy is sound because it’s already difficult tow in back the sympathy of adults who have already formed opinions after constantly being exposed to the rebels for a long time.
Meantime, Lt. Colonel Cesar De Mesa, commanding officer of the 69 Infantry Battalion, urged residents of Barangay Dalagdag, Calinan District to coordinate with the government to drive away the rebels from their community following the encounter that between the soldiers and rebels under Leoncio Pitao alias Kumander Parago of the Pulang Bagani Command 1 last Sunday.
He attributed the discovery of the rebel camp in Barangay Dalagdag to the information given by concerned citizens in Paquibato.
Speaking during a community-consultation with Barangay Chair Oscar Almendez and Major Patrick Cinco, spokesperson of the TF Davao, he assured that his soldiers are friendly and willing to listen to the complaints of the residents.
De Mesa reiterated that his unit will assume as link between the city government and the people especially in the delivery of basic services.

MANILA, Philippines—We went to the Blue Room of the Apo View Hotel in Davao City recently to watch a nephew, Paolo Sisi, perform. Paolo is the bass guitarist of Suave Latino, which plays “cool jazz,” as friends describe their music. They told me that Paolo is “one of the best in the country,” so whenever a foreign artist is in need of an extra bass guitarist in Manila, he’s always hired to help out.
When we entered the Blue Room, Paolo recognized my niece, Rovi, and Rene Angsinco, a cousin. However, it was the swinging singer, Anna Cortes, who acknowledged our presence. Rene informed me that Anna and her husband, Benny Echavia, the group’s lead guitarist, had performed in a resort in the Maldives—for seven years!
Benny provided great instrumental and vocal support for the vivacious Anna, who upon request rendered “La Vie En Rose” and “La Mer.” Thereafter, she performed a perky medley of samba numbers in Portuguese and Spanish. The room was soon rocking, with the audience completely captivated by the singer’s charm and verve.
Repertoire
The charismatic performer’s repertoire of jazz classics was sung with grace and aplomb. Her running repartee with the audience was confident. She was also at home in colloquial English. And, she chose only what was appropriate to her personality and style. Rovi quipped: “She is international in quality!” She was, indeed.
Anna won over the bar’s noisy clientele by singing and dancing with abandon. She was most definitely the Blue Room’s main attraction. She had her audience riveted by giving her all: If the songs were bouncy, she was vibrant and upbeat. If they were sad love songs, she generously shared her soul.
Anna Cortes is a brown singer with soul. She is one of the most impressive performers I have heard in a long time. She should be seen and heard in Manila!

shine in Yokohama
Two young triathletes from Davao City under the Triathlon Association of Davao (TRIAD) made their mark during the recently held 1st World Kids Triathlon in Yokohama, Japan.
Akira Michico Sam ranked number 6 out of more than 20 participants in the 12 year old boys’ category. Those who came ahead of him were from Japan, Chinese Taipei and Hong Kong while Denise Faith Garcia, who just started triathlon early this year, made it to the 13th spot among the more than 30 participants in her wave.
Despite being a neophyte, she was able to top her colleagues, 5 other girls from the Philippines who have been participating in triathlons for years.
Gabrielle Allen Santiago of Laguna was another standout among the boys, placing 7th in his category. Teri and Andie Santos from Westgrove also did well among the girls, placing 6th and 8th, respectively.
The members of the team were competitive enough to stay in the middle to upper end of their pack in their first-ever international outing, which featured hundreds of participants from countries like the USA, Ireland, Israel, Japan, China, Korea, Singa-pore, etc.
According to TRIAD race director Alex Sam, the father of Michico, “Both the summit and the triathlon were good exposure for the kids not only to different issues regarding the environment and how they can help in their own small way, as well as to other kids doing the same sport which serves as a confidence builder to make them strive more for their next events. The kids are now looking forward to more events like this and are excited to compete with other nationalities in the future. Thanks to TRAP for giving the kids the opportunity to attend this event. Congrats Team Pinoy SuperTriKids.”
On the other hand, veteran triathlete Ani Karina De Leon said, “The SuperTriKids’ participation in the World Kids Sports Summit and the World Kids Triathlon in Yokohama was an invaluable and enriching experience for each and every one of them. The seven boys and six girls all came home more motivated about training for and racing in international level competitions.”
Meanwhile, Sam extended their utmost gratitude to some of their backers namely Merco, EVERFLEX, William Leh of Tristar and MTS, Councilor Leo Avila III, TRIAD, Tata Haw, Aboy Sy, Villa Margarita, and their friends and relatives for all the support they have given to Akira and Denise. Paul Palo

- As Ekran Berhad Samal Casino Resort reopens in December
The planned reopening of the P1.5 billion Ekran Berhad Samal Casino Resort Hotel in the Island Garden City of Samal (IGACOS) in December 2009 is expected to bring in lots of economic benefits to Davao and the mounting of Davao-Kota Kinabalu flights is just one of them.
“We can expect mounting flights between Davao and Kota Kinabalu if the reopening of the Casino Resort in Samal pushes through since this is one of the plans of Mr. Tan Sri Datuk Ting Pek Khiing, CEO of Ekran Berhad and one of the major stockholders of Malaysian Airlines,” Presidential Advisers on Mindanao Secretary Jesus Dureza said.
Malaysian Airlines used to ply the Davao-Kota Kinabalu route in the 1990s but it folded up because of the low passenger load. This air linkage is expected to be revived if and when the Samal Casino Resort will be reopened.
Dureza said this was one of the main matters discussed by the Malaysian and Philippine delegations during the bilateral meeting between the Philippines and Malaysia in Brunei Darussalam recently.
Aside from the increasing flights between Davao and KK, he said, Ekran Berhad is also bent on constructing a 4-kilometer road to connect the Casino Resort to Poblacion Kaputian, with the construction cost to be charged to the future Real Property Taxes.
Dureza said the road is still part of the infrastructure project which the National Government committed to provide during the early phase of the project implementation of the resort, through the Department of Tourism and Philippine Tourism Association.
“The local government strongly favors the resumption of the operation of the Ekran Berhad Casino Resort due to the large potential economic impact not only to the City of Samal and the Davao Region but to Mindanao in general,” said IGACOS City Mayor Aniano Antalan.
Ekran Berhad is expected to invest up to $20 million anew with the reopening of the Casino Resort. Dureza said this can translate to direct and indirect job opportunities from the time the hotel is refurbished, reconstructed and even when it is already operational.
“This is expected to impact a great deal in the tourism industry of the region especially if the mounting of more Davao-KK flights will push through,” he said. The local government can also expect around P10 million in local taxes annually with the project.
The Ekran Berhad-owned Samal Casino Resort, which sits on a 250-hectare property in Samal, started its operations in 1998 as a hotel and casino resort. It had up to 300 rooms and a ballroom large enough to accommodate up to 3,000 people. However, it closed down in July 2000 due to the Asian financial crisis.
One of the difficult issues surrounding the reopening of the Casino Resort is the accrued RPT which as of December 2008 has reached P35 million. The management of Ekran Berhad has asked the government to waive the P35 million arrears but while the local government has agreed to waive P7 million worth of fines and penalties which is within its corporate discretion, there is still the remaining P28 million which is now within the discretion of the national government. Hirono-kun September 5th, 2009, 05:48 AM Filinvest to sell P5B worth of bonds
Listed property developer Filinvest Land, Inc. is seeking regulatory approval to sell P5 billion worth of three-year and five-year bonds to partially fund the company’s capital expenditure for the remainder of the year and 2010.
In a registration statement filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Gotianun-led Filinvest Land said it plans to sell up to P500 million worth of three-year bonds and P2.5 billion of five-year bonds. It sought a provision for P2 billion more in case of over-subscription.
The real estate firm said P700 million would be used to buy medium-rise buildings in Metro Manila, Cebu, and Davao from the fourth quarter until the first quarter of 2010.
Filinvest Land added that P2.3 billion would be spent to develop mid-rise buildings in those areas and a high-rise tower in Makati in 2010, while P2 billion would be used to fund mass housing projects next year.
The company picked BPI Capital Corp, BDO Capital and Investment Corp. and First Metro Investment Corp. as joint lead managers and underwriters of the offering.
Investors may buy a minimum of P50,000 worth of bonds and in multiples of P10,000 thereafter. The company has yet to set the offer period and interest yield of the bond.
In the first half, the property developer recorded a 6% earnings increase to P750 million as revenues grew by 11% to P2.47 billion due to higher real estate sales.
The company reported that demand for its core offering, residential mass housing for the socialized, affordable and middle-income markets, remains steady, while take-up of its newest offering — medium rise buildings — continue to sustain "strong buyers’ interest."
"[These projects] are attractive because they offer a much better living environment due to its low-density development, compared to high-rise condominium buildings," Filinvest Land said.
The property firm said it launched 11 projects worth P3.2 billion in the first half, with 18 more to come for the rest of the year, worth P4.2 billion.
Filinvest Land’s shares closed P0.02 higher on Friday at P1.00 apiece. — Don Gil K. Carreon

MtApoStandard September 6th, 2009, 05:32 PM Davao-Brunei flights start in December
By Carlo P. Mallo
EVERYTHING is being ironed out for the opening of new flights that will service the Davao-Brunei Darussalam routes in December, in time for the opening of the refurbished Samal Casino Resort of the Ekran Berhad Sdn Group.
On Friday, officials of the Bureau of Customs (BOC), Immigration, Quarantine, and Security were in a meeting, the first of a series, wherein preparations and additional measures were discussed for the operation of Pearl Pacific Airways that will start in December.
For updates from around the country, follow Sun.Star on Twitter
BOC-Southern Mindanao chief Ronnie Silvestre said BOC is willing to waive the overtime pay of its personnel just to ensure the smooth operation of the new air route.
"We can always discuss that later. What we want to do now is to help ensure the success of this new route which will eventually help in the economy of the city and the country," Silvestre said.
One of the plans being proposed for the success of the Davao-Brunei Darussalam route is for Muslims in Mindanao and other parts of the country to use the capital of Brunei as the jump off point for their trips to Meca.
Presidential Adviser for Mindanao Jesus Dureza announced in August that another investment in the region, brought about by plans to re-open the Samal Casino Resort by end of the year is the servicing of the Davao-Brunei Darussalam route by Pearl Pacific Airways.
Dureza said the Pearl Pacific Airways will start serving the said route by December, in time for the long holidays and the re-opening of the high rollers casino in Samal Island.
"It will serve the Davao-Brunei Darussalam route and will hopefully enhance the growth of tourism in the region," Dureza said.
In August, government officials announced that the Ekran Berhad Sdn-owned casino resort would open by the end of the year, after nine years of being abandoned since it was closed in 2000 due to the global financial crisis.
As reported on Sun.Star, Dureza said Ekran Berhad Sdn owner, Tan Sri Datuk "Dr" Ting Pek Khiing, wanted to reopen the multibillion-peso resort by December 2009.
A whooping P1.5 billion was invested by the Malaysian conglomerate in the construction of the posh resort that has a world-class casino, 300 hotel rooms, grand ballroom, and other world-class amenities.
An additional P500 million has been allotted by the Malaysian group for the rehabilitation of the Samal Casino Resort, which has been left unattended by almost nine years after its closure.
The resort obviously needs a repainting and minor reconstruction as termites have already destroyed some of its wood materials. Its dike was also destroyed by strong waves.

According to my friends who have personally set foot in the resort, the amenities are great: big convention centre, big casino gaming floor, nice cascading villas and what have you. With no conpunction, I would agree that the floating villas are uncool if not downright hideous with no culturally significant flavour to it.
MtApoStandard September 6th, 2009, 06:36 PM saw some photos of those white floating villas though posted on here. bet casino adds more life to the resorts busness activity.
bariQ September 6th, 2009, 07:09 PM Ang O.A. naman ng statistic na to. Davao lang ba from Mindanao ang nakapasok??? Grabe naman. To think hindi Davao ang "the best" sa Mindanao in terms of everything. :dunno:
