Robinsons at Abreeza

Davao City will have a full-service Robinsons Department Store located at Abreeza, the Ayala Center project here of Ayala Land and the Floriendo Group.

Clavel Tongco, Senior Division Head of Ayala Malls based in Cebu City told me that Robinsons Department Store would be the anchor department store at the Ayala Center Davao at Bajada.

She said Robinsons would build its own department store connected to the Abreeza Mall.

Robinsons recently opened a Cyber Center along JP Laurel but with limited space for stores and restaurants. The entire second level of the center is devoted to BPO business locators.

Tongco said the Ayala Center Davao is expected to open in mid 2011 with development cost topping P2.4 billion.

The Davao City Investment Incentive Board recently granted its application for local tax holidays.

Mindanao Film Festival 2009: Call for Entries

The Mindanao Film Festival organizing committee is calling on Mindawon filmmakers to submit entries for this year’s film festival. Entries about, related to, or shot in Mindanao are also welcome. Entries may be feature-length films, short films, or documentaries.

Students are also welcome to submit their entries to the Student Film or Student Documentary Categories.

All genres are welcome to join as long as the entry was made within October 2008 to September 2009. Past Mindanao Film Festival entries are disqualified.

A completed entry form and a DVD Screener copy of the film must be submitted on or before October 2, 2009 to the

I will be the first one to kill it (in reference to the Tamugan hydro plant project) if there is proof that it will be harmful to Davao.”
Thus declared Erramon Aboitiz, president and chief executive officer of Aboitiz Power, explaining that the water resources of the Tamugan River is very important to the company.
He said Davao City is very important for the Aboitiz company because they have significant investments in the city. “Without water, our business will not be able to grow,” he added.[/B]
“If the trees are not protected then our investment in the hydropower plant will just be washed away,” he said, adding “it is thus the thrust of Aboitiz Power to protect the watershed and to really get involve in power conservation and power efficiency. “
He said the Aboitiz group has already conducted a study on the effect of putting up a hydropower plant in the Tamugan River “and our study shows no indication that we are harming the aquifer.”
He said he is an advocate of using Davao’s water for everyone, especially for drinking. However, he added, the water that will be used by their hydropower plant project is not the water that seeps into the aquifer but the water that ends up in the sea.
Aboitiz said he understands the apprehension of the Davao City Water District about their project affecting the water supply. The two concerns of the DCWD, he said, are the elevation of the project and the effect of this in the recharging zones where nature can recharge or replenish the water in the aquifers.
“Our analysis shows that the power plant will not affect the recharge zones,” he said. He begged the agencies and organizations concerned “not to kill the project on a hunch” and asked DCWD and the other organizations that are against the project to “substantiate” their claims.

DAVAO CITY, Sept. 16 (PNA) -- The Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA) has urged the National Water Resources Board (NWRB) to recall its controversial decision revoking the water rights of the Davao City Water District (DCWD) over the use of Tamugan River in Baguio District here.

LWUA will try to prevail upon the NWRB to reconsider its July 15 decision declaring as null and void DCWD’s water rights to the Tamugan River, in a resolution issued August 17 by the LWUA.

LWUA said it is in full support to DCWD in the implementation of its Tamugan Surface Water Development Project as the ultimate solution in averting a potential water crisis in Davao City and its environs.

The DCWD is fighting over rights in Tamugan with Hedcor, an Aboitiz company planning a hydropower plant in one of Davao City’s major rivers.

On March 17 this year, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), through its Environmental Management Bureau, granted an Environmental Compliance Certificate to Hedcor.

Civil society groups are in support of DCWD and have gathered 42,000 signatures backing the surface water project, according to DCWD chair Ed Bangayan. (PNA)

Davao CITY is the NO.1 Tourist Destination in Mindanao (156,468 tourist arrivals in first quarter of 2009). I just love to hear the confirmation about this stuff.... kasi eto palagi ang claim ng other city.

Data from the DOT on tourist arrivals for the first quarter showed that 422,239 tourists went to Cebu, nearly 3 percent higher than the 410,597 tourists who went to the province during the same period last year.

Boracay was second with 158,030 arrivals, followed by Davao City (156,468), Camarines Sur (140,220), Zambales (88,718), and Bohol (71,876).

from the grapevine...Abreeza will provide a 4-walled structure...tpos bahala na ung tenant (in this case, Robinsons) magbuild ng kanilang gustong look and design...so in essence, parang frame lang ang ibibigay...so malamang, parang Landmark-Glorietta ung setup na mangyayari.

she cries foul to human rights violation against hardened criminals but absolved them of heinuos crimes of human rights violations against their innocent preys. cries fowl to violations against minors with police record of gang related murders and robberies of the innocents. who are armed with homemade guns, bladed weapons, stab rods, spears, prowling the streets. they thrive on drugs/substance abuse. yes they are minors. but age is assigned only by law. if it has the psychological capcacityto carry out crimes of an adult, theyre no different from adults whos capable to make choices and decisions. theyre as dangerous to society. public safety of innocents is in danger all the time. theyre hardened to kill. and they will kill to get what they want at any time. why cant the human rights group protect their victims more than what the perpetrators are enjoying from their support.

obviously. but i think there was news about rotational interruptions all throughout mindanao. but southern min suffers the heaviest bec of bulk of consumption. relying most of supply from the north

Accdng to the latest advisories here in CARAga Region from Mimndanao Grid, humina ang mga water powerr sources sa Mindanao e.g. PUlangi and other sources. But hopefully accdng to our reliable source (RADIO VERITAS baktas hehe) this problem will end b4 Sept ends:)
So expect unscheduled blackouts anytime everyday....

i guess the data was taken from submitted reports of hotels and all other accommodation types, and tourism realted establishments with log records of visitors. something like that. that i read. which i guess more credidible reflection of true figures

Rotational Brownouts Hits Mindanao

The National Power Corporation (NPC) temporary shuts down 4 of its hydroelectric power plants and 2 other from its Independent Power producers (IPP) to undertake repairs.
A load reduction plan during peak hours followed as Mindanao Power Grid lowers the generation capacity.

National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) Mindanao Systems Operations Head Mr. Eugene Bicar announced that power plants undergoing preventive maintenance are the Agus I unit 2 (40 MW) & Agus 5 unit I (27 MW) due to clogged up trash racks, and Agus 2 unit 1 (60MW).

The Pulangi Hydro Electric Plant unit 3 in Maramag, Bukidnon has also been shut down due to low inflow and high thrust bearing temperature.

Aggravating the situation is the non-operational Western Mindanao Power Corporation power plant’s units 3 to 10 (80 MW) in Zamboanga City after power cables were burned.
Also shut down was the STEAG Mindanao Coal Fired Power Plant (210 MW) in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental since September 11 for a 12-day maintenance work.

To prevent overloading of transmission lines and address the generation problem, power distribution utilities and electric cooperatives in Mindanao has been requested to drop some of their feeders.

The power situation in Mindanao will experience limited power supply during peak hours – that is from 10AM to 4PM and 6PM to 8:30PM daily – based on actual system condition until curtailment is lifted.

This would mean that areas in Mindanao will have short rotational brownouts.
The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines assured Mindanaoans that necessary steps have already been taken to restore normal power supply in Mindanao Grid to meet the power demands with comfortable level of generation reserves.

NGCP is the new private company that operates the country’s transmission network. It oversees over-all grid operations of the Luzon, the Visayas and the Mindanao power grids.

On September 15, Butuan experienced a blackout that started at 4 in the afternoon until 9 in the evening.

pag dili kaya sa mindanao grid ang need ng davao area... naga padagan ang DLPC sa ilang standby generators...

those genrators use to be the main power source sa city before the connection w/ maria cristina power... now it is use as the backup gensets of the city.

yes. kulang ang supply sa steag, pulangi, agus kay naa guba og maintenance. all these power gen naa sa normin. while more than half sa power gen naa sa normin, ang demand more than half nia sa south.

I really hope it remains that way bai, i've just read in the news petty crimes is on the upswing again there in Davao eversince this CHR (de Lima) hullabaloo. Just yesterday, my daughter's mobile phone was pickpocketed while she was on her way to school, it's not even a high end model that you can pawn or sell for a lot of money as it has only basic features. The reason why i've given all my kids mobile phones is so that i can contact them directly and know there whereabouts and be in constant touch with them also as i'm in a far away place.

Now if this kind of crime goes on, what do you think will happen next? These criminals will get more brazen that instead of stealing phones on the sly they will become more bold and stick a knife in your throat or put a lead in your flesh as it is more easier as what we usually hear and see in the news in other places of our country.

Are we really going to just let this criminality go back again to what it was before? God forbid if this happen, i'll surely go back home and take care of my family there myself.

"As of September 3, four people have already been killed, but I refuse to
intervene," Duterte said.

On Wednesday, four vehicles were looted in broad daylight, bringing back images
of the "Bukas Kotse" gang operating anew in the city.

It can be recalled that at the height of the investigation conducted by the
Commission on Human Rights (CHR) on the alleged summary executions in Davao
City, Duterte resigned from his post as deputized representative of the National
Police Commission (Napolcom) in the city.

"Since the day that I have resigned, I have not set foot on any military camp or
headquarters, not even in any police precinct," Duterte said. "I leave it to
them, ayoko makialam."

The mayor said he will keep his hands off on the resurgence of crimes in the
city as the CHR has yet to complete its investigation on the summary executions.

"If I intervene, I cannot stop the people from going to me or my house asking
for help, and if the suspects end up dead for whatever reason, ako ang
mabuthan," Duterte said.

Surge of murder

Based on the latest count, nine people were killed since the start of September.
All killing incidents have left the police facing blank walls in their
investigation.

The latest victims are two ladies who were shot dead in Tugbok district Friday
morning.

Even the CHR has expressed alarm over the resurgence of killings perpetrated by
unknown motorcycle-riding men.

One of the victims is said to be a relative of Mayor Duterte himself, a certain
Wilfredo Duterte, who was killed in a village in the boundary of Davao and
Panabo cities.

"He is a distant relative of mine as his parents are cousins of my father,"
Duterte said. "Even my relative was killed."

The CHR, moreover, admitted that similar to the law enforcers, particularly the
police, they are also facing a blank wall in their investigations on the
killings.

CHR chair Leila de Lima is now asking for the data on the reported resurgence of
extrajudicial killings in the city that prompted Duterte to call on the
constitutional body to conduct another series of public inquiry on the matter.

Duterte challenged the human rights body and the United Nations (UN) to
re-investigate the resurgence of killings in the city, pointing out that these
happened even after he let go of his mandated supervision of the police.

'Bukas Kotse' gang

Meanwhile, businessmen and private citizens in Davao City have expressed alarm
over the increasing brazenness of members of the Bukas Kotse gang in looting
vehicles, even in broad daylight.

For the month of September, eight vehicles have been looted with their door
windows smashed. Most of the victims lost their laptops, cash, jewelries, and
car accessories to the gang.

"From August to present, as per record, we have eight incidents recorded. Thus,
we are properly managing the deployment of our police personnel in crowded
places like malls and restaurants," Senior Superintendent Ramon Apolinario, DCPO
director, said in an interview Friday.

Apolinario said the gang is composed of members from other places in Mindanao.

IMO, inutil talaga ang mga pulis natin. close to no use na sila, if they need Duterte to shake their feathers before they do their jobs, dapat siguro tanggalin na silang lahat...dapat an institution like the PNP should be reliable enough, na hindi na dapat dependent kay Duterte. he won't be in office forever.

hey guys, havent been posting here for a while but im always visiting this thread to be updated with the revolution in davao:cheers:... amidst global financial crisis it seems that davao is not affected at all. billions of investments are coming to davao city. such an irony when major cities and states all over the world are facing tough times. yet how can a simple 3rd world city be receiving billions of investments at this time?

if you guys are aware, tourists arrivals in las vegas are in its lowest rate ever yet a world class casino will start operating at the end of the year...if you've been to las vegas, say 5years ago and then compare it today, ull really see the difference... fewer tourists and gamblers. macau is even earning more than las vegas at present. shopping centers in some cities are closing shops yet shopping centers and malls in davao are sprouting like mushrooms. The US real estate industry have been hard hit by the crisis yet there is a huge demand for condo units and high end homes in this region. Even the BPO Industry eyes davao as one of the best sites in the country...just curious as to why? just why nga ing ani mani sa davao karon?

why? IMO, this is because the govt and the private sector is really working hard and they are helping each other in promoting davao city. so lahi jud ang difference sa magtinabangay ta sa mag contrahay. i just hope that the whole country is like this. and also, kudos to our police force which is really working hard to make davao city a peaceful city... and isa pod si mayor. he invested a lot in peace and order in the city and was even criticized before. before, tong post de guzman days. mayor's investment in TF davao was very unpopular but mayor digong was very firm.. and look what happen? murag domino effect sa good peace and order sa davao ang mga investments... i just hope na ani pod unta ang whole philippines. like binay's ad bah, "Ganito kami sa Davao sana sa buong bansa din :horse::horse::horse:"

Davao gets orders for Walmart, Target

DAVAO CITY — Cebu-based exporters have placed an initial order of 500 indigenous baskets worth P200,000 from the Talaingod Council of Women in Davao del Norte to be delivered to US-based retail chains Target and Walmart.

While meeting the exporter’s requirement won’t be a cinch for the 45 Ata-Manobo weavers, leaders of the women’s council and government officials working with them are concerned over the volume for the next wave of orders.

Nenita S. Nazareno, provincial director of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-Davao del Norte Field Office, said each woman weaver usually makes two baskets each day, or an average of 90 per day for the group. "They can supply the exporter’s need in a week’s time easily," she said.

The problem, she said, is the cultural aspect tied to the weaving process, which might explain the women’s animosity after they were introduced to new designs based on specifications of the exporters. The 33.3 Company sent seven designs while All Homes provided the council with four designs.

The DTI has identified 200 people from the community who will be trained by a weaver in three batches starting next week while also making a request from the Cottage Industry Technology Center for a new bamboo splitter to optimize efficiency.

"This would pave the way for more exports in the future," said Marizon S. Loreto, DTI director for the Davao region.

The 33.3 Company was part of the Cebu delegation that visited Davao. The visit resulted in a deal where the weavers will supply one Cebu exporter with 100,000 mats. — Joel B. Escovilla

team effort beat the odds. while focus on maintaining th security that was well invested to put in place has disappointed alot of ecpectations, private sector was there to make economic reforms of city happens which i guess too much for the executive to attend to closely amidst destabilising forces of bad meadia and politics. i espeecially appreciated and i guess we all too, the efforts of davao chamber of commerce whos visibly involved on in the progress now on the uproar:lol: thay were there in hand with city business agencies. the tourism department of city and region werere also there. commendable and its all good. hope the momentum will keep on and keep open with change. striving for more. break records so we can see the full potential of what davao city is. progress is unstoppable so to speak

*i learned task force davao budget is funded by citys appropriated security budget. a mindanao city i read about a year ago, proposed to request a task force for their city. but was turned down by the council/budget office, apparently bec it is very expensive to maintain and too much for the citys annual budget

I really hope it remains that way bai, i've just read in the news petty crimes is on the upswing again there in Davao eversince this CHR (de Lima) hullabaloo. Just yesterday, my daughter's mobile phone was pickpocketed while she was on her way to school, it's not even a high end model that you can pawn or sell for a lot of money as it has only basic features. The reason why i've given all my kids mobile phones is so that i can contact them directly and know there whereabouts and be in constant touch with them also as i'm in a far away place.

Now if this kind of crime goes on, what do you think will happen next? These criminals will get more brazen that instead of stealing phones on the sly they will become more bold and stick a knife in your throat or put a lead in your flesh as it is more easier as what we usually hear and see in the news in other places of our country.

Are we really going to just let this criminality go back again to what it was before? God forbid if this happen, i'll surely go back home and take care of my family there myself.

we should be happy with this but i think mas malipay pa ako kung it was a davao-based exporter. that cebu-based exporter is earning pa from the talents and skills of the women from davao del norte.... and by earning, they are earning more. parang gi outsource man yan. or parang ginawang raw materials, tapos sila magbenta sa walmart and target, and in turn earning a much bigger sum. i have nothing against these exporter from other areas, but as i said, it would have been much better if it was a davao based exporter.

well maybe its an ad for the Cebu based exporter but diffinetly its good for Davao. Davao based exporter are already exporting indingenous goods such wooden placemats,pineapple & abaca fiber textiles(for fashion designer) even durian fiber. in fact world class designer Ann Pamintuan's furniture is well known in Europe.

^^ I think peace and order situation in the city is still one of the best in the country, if not the best...kaya nga lang, with the way they are projecting their image na kelangan pa ni mayor magstep in, para silang inutil.

police visibility is not bad, IMO.

Certainly, i'm still convinced our city is still quite safe but the authorities and the community shouldn't be complacent.

I have this gut feeling natatakot mga pulis natin diyan dahil sa CHR na yan. We all know the mayor is very supportive of our police force like when they get sued for doing their job, si mayor ang gumagastos sa kaso nila. Ngayon na ni-relinquish ni mayor role niya sa napolcom, baka nag alala mga kapulisan natin na pag ginagawa nila trabaho nila ay bibigyang kulay ng CHR ni de Lima. Parang nag play safe ang kapulisan natin at baka bigla nalang tumaob kaldero nila dahil lang sa politika.

That's precisely what i'm afraid of, pag natatakot na mag trabaho ang kapulisan dahil baka makasuhan and the fact they will have to shoulder the expenses (re: lawyers fee, etc.) plus getting suspended w/o pay, ano ipapakain nila sa kanilang pamilya?

This emboldens the criminal elements in doing their activities knowing the police force is getting demoralized due to de Lima's witch hunting!

no offense bai ha pero ive been to davao four times paman. this is what ive observed so far, cdo is not far behind davao these days. davao's progress is has been slow recently while cdo's development is off the chart. whether you believe this or not cdo will overtake davao in two to three years time. hinay ang negosyo diha sa inyong region kay daghan dugay mamayad diha. dako ang land area og population diha sa inyong lugar mao ga-una mo pero gamay nalang kaayo. kung malls og tourism ang pamabato niyo karon, diri sa amo, kalooy sa Diyos lang, gasugod ng high rises og huge govt infra like Phividec, LADP and soon MRS.

ganyan talaga, puro sat2x, out of touch sa reality...

pero dapat talagang bigyan ng award ang manghuhula na yan, Nobel Prize...kasi naman, they did in 4 visits, what AIM did in a systematic meticulous manner...dapat turuan nila ang AIM how to conduct studies in 4 visits!!! sayang2x lang ug kwarta ang AIM with their methodologies, naa man diay cheaper more affordable and accurate, 2-3 years pa jud ang time table. :lol:

be realistic hey. progress and developments unfolding in davao are real. you dont see them in your city. if you believe cdo will catch up with davao city in 2-3 years time, pray that davao city will experience negative growth within that period equivalent to 10 years of economic inactivity. proliferation of condonminiums are real only among many real indicators of real progress in the city. and theyre selling in davao. yes there is plan in your city but unless developer will be able to pre sold units to committed buyers, construction is yet to happen.

at a rate it is in now, now where cdo can catch up. in 2-3 years mindanao will have ayala mall and possibly within this period, the mindanao sm malls centrepiece. dvao will experience even more progress aside from it the shopping centre of highend market from outside the region and city.

name a city that will fit in as de facto capital other than davao city.

I have to disagree mga bai. With all its "off the chart" developments based on what have been posted in this forum, Davao has already long been surpassed by the premier city. :)

Despite this, Davaoenos are thankful to still have Davao as the preferred investment site of many big corporations - Ayala Land, SM Prime, JG Summit (Robinsons), Filinvest, Camella Communities, DMCI (Consunji), Phinma - to name a few. OK na sa amin ito. :)

Don't be fooled by marketing and advertising of some places. Most of them will just rip off your money. If you want to see the whole of davao, go to las terazzas village. This is has the best city view of Davao.

Dencias - best breakfast. try tokwat goto and lugaw arroz caldo
Spiralle - best pizza here in davao and also has great angus steak
Luz Kinilaw - Tuna panga and roe
Marina - Top class variety of sea food. Swordfish steak!
Penongs - Delicious chicken, pinakbet, grilled pork and grilled isol!
Dusk till dawn - known for native chiken barbecue
Tsuru - offers best japanese food here in davao. every 15 n 30 buffet
Claudes - offers great sea food dish and juicy steak
Lachis - Must try the Laing pasta with bangus. Grilled porkchop really good. Sansrival, cheesecake and cupcakes are the best here in davao
Humbertos - yummy chocolate cake
Margies kitchen - has many different varieties of delicious cake
Ahfat - Lomi satee really good!
Emerald - best to eat chinese panto place. yummy taro puff and serves good Chinese dishes

I've tried almost all the restaurant here in Davao and don't be fooled by the advertising

BTW all of these are just base on my own perspective.

If i have not made a comment on the restaurant its either I was not satisfied or I still have not tried. But fyi, I have eaten almost all the restaurant here in davao.

Antonios in Davao is a good restaurant too. Too bad their food is not consistent. Sometimes its really yummy but sometimes its not good. No offense
Harana - one of the best Filipino restaurant here in davao.I use too love Bellys grill, too bad its already close.
Bistro - Tendertips, Arrozcaldo, steak and don't forget this is where i tasted the best bangus belly in davao. The way they cooked, just perfect.

My next stop, kusina selera. I'm intrigue with the article.

I'm planning to make a detailed honest review of all the restaurants and dining places here when I have time.

If you are talking on La Toscana, Spiralle is better La Toscana. Black angus steak with truffle butter essence on top and chicken with herbs in Spiralle really tops my chart. But i'l give La Toscana another shot one of these days. Btw when I eat in a restaurant, i order a lot and always order the restaurants specialty too. So that I can really tell if the restaurant is worth eating. Btw I have a high standards so sorry for some restaurants that might get offended when i post something here.

I travel around the Philippines and always try the best food that a town or province offers. My bestbuddy is a chef in manila and I love food. I always post my honest opinion.

Andessa - Nice place and ambiance! food is ok but not great. I like the giniling stuffed sili and their dessert Malagkit rice with hot chocolate.

And i think its Tadakuma you were talking about - Yeah its authentic Japanese but I told you i have high standards. I know a lot of people who like it here but for me, I am not a fan of it. I don't like their sukiyaki and beef tepanyaki but i love their katsudon. Akiko is better for me than tadakuma, no offense to Tadakuma fans. (personal opinion) There are only a few Japanese restaurant in Davao. They have 2 branches btw Jacinto and Damosa

Swiss Deli - I've eaten here a couple of times, steak in claudes is way better. Although I like the garlic butter they serve on top of your steak.

Kimchi "korean restaurant" - One day, I was craving for Bibimbap and I found this restaurant Kimchi located along Jp Laurel. It was a big surprise for me that the food was beyond my expectations. When I entered the place, there were many koreans eating. Bibimpop, beef and their squid were great and don't forget to taste their free appetizer fried tofu, One of the yummiest tofu I ever tasted. Warning, if you are not in to korean food, this is not for you.

Lachis tofu is great also btw

Mamu's, is this the place located in el rio? Haven't tried this place

Penongs took over the place of Bellys Grill
I miss grilled scallops, crispy fried hito fillet and ostriche steak in Bellys.

di man.. pero, ang boulevard atong couple of years ninglabay, limpyo man.. pero karon, naa nay kanang mga cellophane, plastic cups, papel na nagkalat sa sidewalks..
that is money to streetchildren who endures difficult life to live decently(honest living).

we have to admit, naa jud uban ing-ana kay magdali sa ilang lakaw. ;)

sa pagkakaron, daghan kaayo mga bag-ong condominiums sa Davao nga mga bag-ong gipangtukod.

mao ra nay akong obserbasyon pero in fairness progressive pud ang CDO. the two most important cities in Mindanao is of course CDO and Davao. ayaw na lang mo pag away.

Contented na kami khit hndi highrise yung building basta yung design nya reflects the heritage and culture of our place and people... :)

Which is what was/is happening in Dubai. Real estate has been a speculator driven market plus a very loose credit system which is now biting back at them.

I agreen with you mas maganda yung kahit walang highrise ang lugar but the ambience is liveable, charming, romantic and peaceful. :cheers:
