until people here stop giving the thread a "chatroom" feel, this thread wont be sticky. the forum has a P.M. system specifically for statements not related with the thread and for your private "conversations" :runaway:

i was really horrified with the news about the girl who got burned alive in a beauty pageant, a very sad news, her mom was interviewed by one network and she was very angry at the slow response of your supposedly "world-class" 911.

Well, World-Class, but hey, we're people Valium.

^^ OT: lena aka scandinavian_girl is that you in your avatar? she's so beautiful.

@Junex here it is...
A VIDEO obtained by ABS-CBN Davao showed University of Southeastern Philippines (Usep) student Cheryl Sarate being engulfed by fire during the school's beauty pageant.

The clip shown at the network's news program showed Sarate in her costume made of cotton and plastic while parading on the stage along with other contestants of the pageant.

The video showed Sarate's gown catching fire as she passed by a candle placed at the side of the elevated stage.

Within a fraction of a second, the video showed Sarate falling off the stage already engulfed by fire while spectators scampered to safety.

Few people were brave enough to try to put off the fire that enveloped the student but their attempt seemed to have just fanned the blaze more.

The video showed no one getting a fire extinguisher, which is a must in every edifice especially in learning institutions like Usep.

Investigation showed that there was no available fire extinguisher inside the hall where
the pageant was held.

To make matters worse, the host of the pageant even advised the crowd that the show will resume in 20 minutes clearly unaware of the gravity of the incident.

Sarate's mother could not help but cry while watching the video clip of her daughter's gruesome moment.

The mother vowed to file charges against the pageant's organizers and the school administration.

The city's Bureau of Fire and Protection earlier said organizers violated the fire code, which requires organizers to get a permit for the use of any open flame like a candle in any public occasion.

City fire marshal Rico Neil Kwan Tiu said names of the organizers were already submitted to their office. It was however learned that these were only students' names and no faculty member or school officials were included in the organizers' list.

The school administration meanwhile said it is ready to face any charges that would arise out of the incident.

no 911 fault here....

I think the organizers were using a part of their brain (the artistic side) and forgot the other.

Now, I'm not blaming anyone. But they should study the venue and their "artistic pursuits" if it is correct. It would've been better if instead of having candles, they should have those "electric" ones.

The Lakitan Complex btw IMHO might be an all-muslim complex. It's one of those "malls" I and gravy contested before. It is so because I passed by Quezon boulevard and found one of the pirated DVD stalls "advertising" the mall.

And I think its maranao name speaks for itself. The battle of the "malls" in San Pedro: Lakitan vs. Lachmi!

I have questions about weather in Davao. What season do you have now? How many seasons do you have , 4 like here in north Europe or only 2, dry and wet seasons??? If, what are the differences?? Is the weather like sunny early mornings and going towards rain in the evening?? I do not know a whole lot about tropical weather ???

Lena, we have only two seasons: summer and spring. We don't have winter and autumn. However, we have different weather conditions. In the highlands, it can be quite temperate. Look at those pine-like trees in the pics? I saw that before when I passed in Buda. And boy, do they look beautiful.

Davao is shielded by some mountain ranges, which make it typhoon proof. However, it can't contest really temperate areas in the Philippines like Baguio.

Davao's balanced weather and beauty from the highlands to the lowlands makes it a desirable place to live in, added with its slightly polluted atmosphere.

I'm not sure if Japanese ni or Korean....tell me if its positive or negative! This is a foreign news about Davao!

TJ, this is the translation of a forumer in the Korean thread:

PD World Report

Located in a southern Island of Mindanao, 1.5 hours of flight from the capital Manila, is the city of Davao. (the map of Phillipines appears)
Having 1.2 million of population, Davao is the third city in the Phillipines after Manila and Cebu and is dreaming of becoming an investment heaven.

(subtitle with background music: Dream of an investment heaven-Phillipine's Davao City)

Located at the Northeast of Davao is the headquarter of Union Cement. (subtitle: Union Cement, Davao). It is Phillipine's largest cement company founded more than 40 years ago. In 1997, Holsim Group, a multi-national cement company from Switzerland, invested the share of 50% in this company. The result of investment has lead to increased production and exportation.

(Subtitle: Claes Avale(?), vice-president of Union Cement)
Q: Collaborate in marketing?
A: This country we are exporting to Hawaii, uh.. 40 thousands tons of cement
Things is we gain by having a foreign partner.

City of Davao's foreign investment amount, even the early 1990s, have been less than 30,000 dollars per year. But after the mid-90s, it increased steeply to nearly 20 times. (graph: i can't read the letters they are too blurry)

What are the reasons of such a sudden increase of investment?

A weekday afternoon, a man with leather jacket and sunglasses appears in a large motorcycle. This man in his middle age named Duterte is the mayor of the city, who has been taking care of Davao for the last 14 years. He is the man who took the biggest role in inducement of investment.

(subtitle: Davao Police Department)
After being elected to the mayor for the first time in 1989, Mr. Duterte himself had actively solved the public security problems within the city. That's because no person or company will invest in a place with low sense of public security.

(subtitle: ??? I can't read the letters are too blurry)
To give them a moral support ...(?)... and to take away from the city the criminals. Maybe we can get some information ...(?)...

Southern island of Mindanao, where the city of Davao is located, is the base of Islamic rebellion troops in search of independence. That's why the city of Davao, until the end of 1980s, had to suffer from crimes and terrorism.

Mayor Duterte has reinforced the punishment for such crimes, and as the result, the public security started to build. After public security has settled, Mayor Duterte established the first Investment Promotion Center in the Phillipines in 1995 and started to induce investment. (subtitle: Investment Promotion Center)

Here, information and service needed are given to anybody that's willing to invest in the city.

(subtitle: Bren Nover - American invester)
And because we are going to be doing a (?) program, we need programers too and I have a big command of Englsih and they also need to be experienced (?)
(something like: We are going to need experienced locals with great command of English)
(subtitle: Roberto Teo - Davao Investment Promotion Center Manager)
(we are very good country with trained work force or something like that)

And I think its maranao name speaks for itself. The battle of the "malls" in San Pedro: Lakitan vs. Lachmi!

Muslims vs Indians? :) in a healthy competition that is!

Robinsons Land net profit jumps 20% to P1.23B
By Zinnia B. Dela Peña
The Philippine Star 08/07/2006

Robinsons Land Corp. (RLC), the real estate unit of Gokongwei holding firm JG Summit Holdings, reported a 20 percent jump in its net income for the nine months ending June this year, mainly driven by the strong performance of all business units.

In a financial report, RLC said net profit amounted to P1.23 billion compared with P1.02 billion a year earlier. Revenues likewise grew 27 percent to P4.83 billion. RLC’s fiscal year ends in September.

Frederick Go, executive vice-president and group general manager of RLC, said all four core business units of the company did well, with the commercial centers division accounting for bulk of total revenues while the buildings division recorded the biggest increase in profitability.

RLC’s shopping centers, led by flagship stores Robinsons Galleria and Robinsons Place Manila, pumped in revenues of P2.35 billion. Recently-opened Robinsons Place Pioneer and the redeveloped Robinsons Place Novaliches also contributed to the increase.

Go said the company will continue to focus its efforts on improving tenant mix, enhancing mall facilities, and intensifying marketing efforts.

"The company will be expanding its retail presence all over the country, ensuring our continued growth. We have several metropolitan and provincial malls now in the pipeline and construction will commence within 2006. We will soon complete the renovation of the Galleria West Wing and are midway in the construction of the Manila mall expansion," Go said.

RLC’s High-Rise Buildings Division, on the other hand, registered revenues of P1.45 billion or 79 percent higher than the previous level’s P813.9 million. This was due to the recognition of realized revenues from its residential condominium projects as well as increased office rentals.

Go said the company’s residential condominiums continue to be well received and are among the first choices of residential consumers. For this year, revenue growth primarily came from projects like One Gateway Place in Mandaluyong and One Adriatico Place in Manila.

He disclosed that RLC is now the country’s biggest landlord of contact and business process centers, being the preferred landlord among major international and domestic contact centers and business process outsourcing (BPO) companies owing to the prime locations and superior technical design of its office buildings.

Enjoying almost full occupancy in all its office properties, which includes Robinsons Cybergate Center, RLC’s rental income increased by 43 percent year-on-year.

RLC’s Housing and Land Development Division contributed P368.81 million or an increase of 12 percent from the year earlier figure of P329.71 million, mainly due to Robinsons Highlands and Bloomfields, both in Davao; and Forest Parkhomes and Fernwood Parkhomes.

The Hotel Division, a major contributor to RLC’s recurring revenues, recorded gross revenues of P657.86 million for the three quarters of its fiscal year, up 86 percent from P354.64 million. This was attributed to the opening of Crowne Plaza Galleria Manila, a five-star hotel located in the heart of Ortigas Center.

RLC said costs went up 15-percent to P1.7 billion, largely due to higher cost of realized sales of the high-rise buildings division. Hotel costs and expenses increased due to the opening of the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

General and administrative expense also increased by 17 percent mainly as a result of higher marketing and selling expenses on account of higher sales and revenues of the high-rise buildings division.

As of end-June 2006, RLC’s total assets stood at P32.39 billion while stockholders’ equity was at P14.02 billion. Cash dividends paid during the period amounted to P735 million.

A tourism opportunity missed
DEMAND AND SUPPLY By Boo Chanco
The Philippine Star 08/07/2006

It is not surprising that when an opportunity fell on our laps, our tourism officials were caught napping. Last week, a total of 15 international flights bound for Hong Kong from various capitals all over the world were diverted to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) due to tropical storm "Henry," which closed down Hong Kong’s airport after ravaging our northern provinces.

Among other flights, Cathay Pacific had 10 of its Hong Kong-bound flights coming from various places such as Beijing, China; Singapore; Jakarta; Alaska in the US; Penang, Malaysia; Melbourne, Australia; and London, England, diverted to NAIA. A Cebu Pacific flight to Hong Kong was also turned back. As reported by Philippine Star, the various airlines’s Manila station offices had to scramble for billeting for the more than 2,700 passengers who had to stay the night in Manila.

British Airways had their two Hong Kong-bound flights diverted to NAIA, and Swissair had one flight going to Hong Kong from Zurich and Northwest Airlines had one flight coming from Miami, among those diverted due to the 120 kilometer per hour winds battering Hong Kong. The sudden influx of wide-bodied jets that crowded the NAIA aircraft parking area had forced NAIA authorities to advise all international airlines that other flights could not be accommodated.

The thought that came to my mind was, why bring all those diverted flights to Manila, in the first place. A Pinoy expat based in New York also wrote to say that Cebu and Davao should have been automatically prioritized in such a system as emergency landing spots over Metro Manila. Both cities have more decent airport terminal buildings and better tourism environment. There would have been more chances of those accidental tourists coming back if their first peek of the country was Mactan or Davao than the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila and its adjoining squatter areas.

Given that typhoons happen at predictable times of the year in our region, we should have had a system in place to welcome and accommodate hundreds of passengers stranded by the weather. There is such a thing as typhoon tourism. The airports in Mactan and Davao should be expanded to accommodate a sudden surge in the number of planes wanting to land.

Our Pinoy expat reader suggests that such a system should have a central database of all hotels and resorts, three stars and upwards, so that alerts can immediately be sent to these hotels and resorts whenever there is a possibility that a known typhoon would force flights to land in the Philippines. These establishments can subsequently reply with information on how many rooms they have available within the next several hours so that airline officials won’t have to scramble for rooms.

The same alert system can also be applied to tourist bus companies to transport passengers to their accommodations. Such a system, which is an adaptation of "Just in Time" (JIT) that is used in manufacturing, may be worth implementing because, as pointed out earlier, typhoons are regular occurrences in this region.

The number of stranded passengers, at 2,700, is significant. It is almost equivalent to the number traveling on a large cruise ship. If each passenger were assigned a single room at a rate of $80 a night, the country could earn approximately $216,000 to $432,000 in hotel or resort bookings alone for a stay of up to two nights. Transportation and accommodation costs will be paid for by the affected airlines. Typhoon tourism is nothing to be sneezed at.

A layover in Plantation Bay or Mactan Shangri-La or the Pearl Farm will be more memorable than one in a Makati hotel. I realize that Cebu’s hotels are almost always fully booked. But maybe, during the typhoon season, they are not as busy and can accommodate emergencies like last week’s.

Typhoon tourism or not, the bottom line is as I have always said in this column, we need investments in tourism infrastructure like hotel rooms. Attracting those investments should be the first item in the agenda of the tourism secretary, not all that pa-pogi media events and foreign junkets he is so fond of.

Davao City folk support Green Highways project

5,000 people show up at project launching

DAVAO CITY – Some 5,000 people trooped to the Davao Convention and Trade Center here last week to show their support for the Green Philippine Highways Project.

Addressing the enthusiastic crowd, Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Angelo T. Reyes said that the project is meant to restore air quality, expressing concern about the worsening state of the environment, especially air and water.

He called on all Filipinos to demonstrate their concern about the environment, adding this can be done by participating in the biggest tree-planting activity in the country on Aug. 25.

Reyes said the project will be implemented nationwide in cooperation with the media, academe, non-government organizations, other government agencies, local government units, the business sector, religious sector and other civic organizations.

The project will cover the 2,175- kilometer Pan Philippine Highway, 439-kilometer Manila North Road and 824-kilometer West Nautical Highway. About 500,000 seedlings are needed for the said project, according to him.

Reyes urged every Davaoeños to participate in the tree plant and make a statement that unity is still possible for a noble cause, the cause of the environment.

He expressed confidence in the success of the project, giving emphasis on the need for cooperation and commitment.

He also said that the most important ingredient of every endeavor is unity.

Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte pledged that the city government will see to it that every Davaoeño is doing his share in the protection and conservation of the environment and every citizen has that responsibility.

The Davao launching was highlighted by the reading of commitment by all stakeholders who attended the event.

Representatives of various organizations and institutions pledged their support for the greening project by planting tree seedlings to the shoulders of the highways in the Davao provinces and by taking care of the trees until these are matured.

Romeo Serra promised to mobilize the Chamber of Commerce in Mindanao consisting of 14 organizations as well as major industries associations on Aug. 25. "We have our share of the bounty of Mother Earth, and we must also share in the process of solving the problems," Serra said.

Organizations and institutions present in Region 11 launching came from the academe, non-government organizations and the local government units, other national agencies. (GMA)

If you have connections with the Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai Inc.(PNJKI) in Lanang, they have a good research on Japanese settlements all over Davao and Mindanao. PNJKI President mentioned to me in a meeting that there are still surviving structures, mostly storage houses of plantations, scattered all over Davao City, Davao del Norte and Compostela Valley, particularly Pantukan. I think they have a good collection of photographs. We were discussing then of installing historical markers on these sites and restoring the structures. This idea was an offshoot of the proposal I was supposed to present to the City on local heritage conservation. Taking off from the research of local historian (Corsino?), markers with photographs etched on aluminum sheets will be placed in historically significant sites in the City.

TJ, this is the translation of a forumer in the Korean thread:

PD World Report

Located in a southern Island of Mindanao, 1.5 hours of flight from the capital Manila, is the city of Davao. (the map of Phillipines appears)
Having 1.2 million of population, Davao is the third city in the Phillipines after Manila and Cebu and is dreaming of becoming an investment heaven.

hah, still dreaming? foreigners still see davao as "dreaming"? there was an overstatement in another thread and this one is definitely an understatement. isnt davao already an investment haven? how come some people (foreigners in this case) still see davao as dreaming? is it due to lack of local government support? promotion? investment volume?

The Philippine Eagle Center (PEC) is located at the foothills of Mt. Apo in Malagos, Baguio District, Davao City and situated within the Malagos Watershed. The Philippine Eagle Center primarily operates as a captive breeding facility for the endangered Philippine Eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi) and other birds of prey.

PEC is home to 32 Philippine Eagles. Nestled besides a tropical rainforest environment in Malagos, the 8.4-hectare Center has become one of the most visited tourism destinations in the region to learning about the natural environment.

Philippine Eagle Center has grown to be an important tourist destination in Davao City. It does not only have Philippine Eagles to show but there are a number of other birds, mammals and reptiles as well. It is home to 11 species of birds, 4 species of mammals and 2 species of reptiles, most of which are endemic to the country and some are considered rare.

Also present in the area is the vast assemblage of flora typical of a tropical rain forest with numerous trees and plants that are known to be endemic.

http://img78.imageshack.us/img78/3151/ftrpagasaxd8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
The center is divided into three functional areas. These are:
The Captive Breeding Area. This is where the breeding birds are found as well as those imprinted birds. This area is restricted to the public and only the captive breeding staff is allowed to go in and out of it.
The Food Stock Area. This is where we raise the food for the animals to ensure a disease-free stock. We have goats, rabbits, chickens, quails, and guinea pigs. These stocks are needed for the daily food requirements of every animal at the center.
The Exhibit Area. This area is open to the general public, wherein exhibit animals are displayed.

Davao Kids Test Drive New Eagle Center Facilities

It was a fun Saturday afternoon as nearly a hundred Davaoeño youngsters experienced the new Hawk Walk and Diola's Forest exhibits at the Philippine Eagle Center over the weekend.

The Hawk Walk and Diola's Forest , the latest youth-oriented facilities at the Center, were inaugurated last Saturday, June 10, amidst fun games, face painting, balloon animals, clowns, and free-flowing cotton candy.

Jeremiah and Joseph, nephews of Davao City Councilor Rene Elias Lopez, Marga, daughter of Department of Tourism Regional Director Sonia Garcia, and Marga's cousins from the Garcia clan were among the first to explore the new facilities. They were joined by children from the DS Foundation for the Differently-abled and pediatric cancer patients from the Kythe Foundation.

Congressman Vincent Garcia, representative for the 2 nd District of Davao, unveiled the marker for Diola's Forest with Congressman Del de Guzman of Marikina, while Councilor Lopez cut the ribbon in behalf of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and the City Government of Davao to officially open the Hawk Walk.

Diola's Forest , an exhibit room designed specifically for young audiences, features Philippine Eagle artifacts like bones and feathers and information on other birds of prey and biodiversity. Young guests to the inauguration party also enjoyed playing with animal toys and puzzles, and leafing through story books on the eagle in the cozy reading corner of the room.

The room was named after the eagle Diola , the mother of Pag-asa and Pagkakaisa, the first captive-bred Philippine Eagles.

Development of the room began as early as 2002, when Congressman Garcia, de Guzman and seven other House members pledged support for the education efforts of the Philippine Eagle Foundation. Garcia and de Guzman were joined by Representatives Ed Chatto, Juan Miguel Zubiri, Gilbert Remulla, Felix William Fuentebella, Joel Villanueva, Kim Bernardo-Lokin and Eileen Ermita-Buhain in constructing Diola's Forest .

Councilor Lopez and Paolo Ouano of Mayor Duterte's Rody Project (Recognizing Outstanding Davao Youth) in turn cut the ribbon to open the Hawk Walk, a special alley displaying different species of raptors (birds of prey). The Hawk Walk allows visitors close and personal encounters with the birds.

The walk was constructed by the City Government of Davao to aid in the education of the public on the differences between raptor species. With its 10 adjoining compartments, the Hawk Walk allows guests to compare the characteristics of each species as they proceed along the walk. The facility is also expected to enhance the public's appreciation of the biodiversity in the country.

The inauguration was held at the close of the 8 th Philippine Eagle Week, which began on June 3.

Councilor Rene Elias Lopez, and finalists of the Rody Project (Recognizing Outstanding Davao Youth) cut the ribbon on June 10 to formally open the new Hawk Walk at the Philippine Eagle Center in Malagos, Baguio District, Davao City.

Marikina Representative Del de Guzman and wife Amalia plant a tree at the Philippine Eagle Center last June 10 during the celebration of the 8th Philippine Eagle Week. Congressman de Guzman was also in town to inaugurate Diola's Forest, a new children's exhibit room at the Eagle Center, with Congressman Vince Garcia of Davao City.

Joy Showing Through . Even with a hygienic mask on, a pediatric cancer patient's delight is evident after getting a floral design painted on her hand during the inauguration of Diola's Forest and the Hawk Walk at the Philippine Eagle Center. Nearly a hundred Davao youngsters partied at the Eagle Center last Saturday afternoon to launch the new children's facilities at the Center.

Glad to see patent for Maglev for car applications. My approach is totally different from the patent that was issued. And there are 100 times differing approaches for Maglev designs. My design and testing data has been a solid guidance and I think a prototype will be produced soon for testing. Although previous applications has been successful, I'd like it tested in Digos-Davao CIty route.

Your best clue is the earth's magnetic pull called gravity. How you can compensate the earth's magnetic pull thru maglev to get to the height you wanted is the way you want to design your personal maglev. Given all scientific data already available, I think you should have the answer by now. Do let us know what you came up, though.

A not-for-profit institution will be setup to help just like Rajah turn his ideas into invention and from invention to financial gains. With everyone's help, and with everyone's membership to this not-for-profit organization, any pinoy ideas will be assisted all the way thru profitability. Since this is a Davao thread, then this not-for-profit organization could be registered in Davao region. This is one way for harnessing the human resources available in davao regions and all throughout the country. I am sure that there will be active financial participations by overseas pinoys, but foremost, are the community members themselves who will stand to directly benefit from all these gains. Their contributions thru memberships will be the fuel that ignites pinoy's technical advancements and increased living standards.

hah, still dreaming? foreigners still see davao as "dreaming"? there was an overstatement in another thread and this one is definitely an understatement. isnt davao already an investment haven? how come some people (foreigners in this case) still see davao as dreaming? is it due to lack of local government support? promotion? investment volume?

have you seen the tv news from korea bai valium where that phrase originated? it's circa 2001 if i'm not mistaken, dreaming is not bad as long as it will not turn into a nightmare. after dreams are fulfilled, davao will continue to dream. newyork has a dream, every city must have one. living in davao actually is like a dream, clean and green, bustling city with samal islands and davao gulf and mt. apo as background, i could go on and on but i might be awaken so hindi na lang.

hey valium duet na lang tayo....

To dream the impossible dream
To fight the unbeatable foe
To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go

To right the unrightable wrong
To love pure and chaste from afar
To try when your arms are too weary
To reach the unreachable star

This is my quest
To follow that star
No matter how hopeless
No matter how far

To fight for the right
Without question or pause
To be willing to march into Hell
For a heavenly cause

And I know if I'll only be true
To this glorious quest
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm
When I'm laid to my rest

And the world will be better for this
That one man, scorned and covered with scars
Still strove with his last ounce of courage
To reach the unreachable star...

Malagos Garden Resort in Davao
http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/8250/26091304malagossignagepostbs1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
It's only lately that I've broken out of the typical mold of being largely ignorant of the places of interest close to where one lives. So today, I took a tour of the Malagos Garden Resort.

Malagos is about an hour's drive away from downtown Davao on the road to Bukidnon. It's a bit past Calinan, one of the tributary towns to Davao City.

Malagos Garden Resort is a resort of a slightly different sort. It features guest rooms, restaurants, and convention halls, but breaking a bit out of type (for the Philippines, anyway), it's not situated in a beach. Instead, it sits in a 12-hectare park that's part orchid garden and part aviary.
http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/1415/26091288animalencounterspostbl3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

According to the brochure, "it is the first property in the Philippines and the 39th in the world to be certified in the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Business and Properties of Audubon International, a worldwide environmental organization based in the USA."
http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/9084/malagoswildlifefoundationsk5.gif (http://imageshack.us)http://img54.imageshack.us/img54/6992/interactivelogoex4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/6510/dscf6710uo6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
All in all, it's a pretty decent experience. I only have two gripes. First, the entrance fee of P100 per adult (P75 on weekdays) is a little steep; and second, I missed the garden tour and the bird show. So my advice is: before one visits, one should make sure of the schedule of activities first so as to maximize on the entrance fee.

Davao's Way

And now, kadayawan is here
And so I change my house's curtain
My friend, I'll say it clear
davao is nice, of which I'm certain
I've lived a life that's full
I traveled each and every city
And more, much more than this, i did davao's way

Parades, we had a few
But then again, floral parades too
I did indak-indak and saw it through rizal extension
I planned each charted course, each careful step, mac arthur highway
And more, much more than this, I did davao's way

Yes, there were times, roxas avenue
When I bit off more than I could chew
Kaan dawet, there was no doubt
I ate it up and take some out
at MTS, I drank it all and did davao's way

I've loved, horse fights and cried
at Agro grounds, my share of kicking
And now, as tears subside, I find durian so amusing
To think I eat all that
And may I say, not in a shy way,
"Oh, yes, oh, yes, it's me, I eat it my way"

For what is davao, what has it got?
valium himself, said it's a nut

Valium. Don't use the word for your benefit. I asked the translator Dhumwon from the Korean thread and thanking him for translating it. We have "rough" translations for everything and I think it would be very unkind if I spit something unkind to him.

Yes, but definitely, go to the Davao-Japanese museum in Calinan. You can find old relics of Davao past there and the ties between Davao and Japan.

Most of the Japanese that came to Davao are Okinawans because of the climate. And I think most tourists that still come to Davao are Japanese.

PAL eyes new international routes from Davao

Davao City (8 August) -- Philippine Airlines executive vice president
Atty. Domingo Duerme said new routes are now in the drawing board for
international flights from Davao.

Duerme said talks are on going for a Davao-Hongkong route that could
be the newest direct route from the south.
He said that if this will materialize, the opening of the
international route will take place next year.

PAL had been servicing international passengers even here in Davao
but these are all connecting flights.

He said this is being done through their "check thru facilities"
where he cited for instance that passengers from Davao bound for the
US may check-in at the Davao International Airport and they will be
assigned seats even for their international flights.

The passengers may no longer do the hassle of checking in their
cargoes when they reach the NAIA in Manila because PAL will take
charge of it the moment they check in the domestic airport. And this
case is true to other international points that are served by PAL.

Meanwhile Duerme also bared that they have terminated their Kuala
Lumpur, Malaysia and Riyahd, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia routes.

He said they lost the competition to other carriers in the Middle
East.

I've been reading SSC for a long time and I've been following this thread. Davao is indeed beautiful and booming. How could valium rant about it? (yes, from my reading, I've discovered that valium loves to ignite wars). Anyway, don't mind him. As you see on his signature, he's a tripper. :tongue3:

anyways, welcome to SSC davao GlamChiqAA... valium is our avid fan here. sanay na kami sa kanyang mga padaplis na mga birada hehe.

DATE 2006 exhibitors confirm participation

Davao City (8 August) -- Foreign and local exhibitors to the Davao Trade Expo (DATE) 2006 had already confirmed participation while some made reservations to fill in the 140 booths that will be put up during the three days exposition.

DATE 2006 chair Atty. Domingo Duerme said there are 87 exhibitors who confirmed and about 30 who made reservations.

According to the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCCII) among the foreign exhibitors that placed reservations are the US Embassy and Federal Express.

Duerme said they also expect more US foreign businesses to join the exhibit just like in 2005 when some 30 US based companies participated.

Duerme said with P82 million sales (book sales included) generated last year, they are targeting this year an increase of 25 percent as against the figure in 2005.

He said however that they were not able to follow up what went through with the book sales.

Comparative total sales generated of DATE in 2003 accounted for P36 million, 2004, P55.5 million (with 55 percent over 2003), and 2005, P82 million (or 32 percent increase in the previous year).

He said while last year’s crowd drawer was on real property and agriculture they would expect technology to dominate as top best sellers this year.

Cris Arietta, DATE 2006 chair of logistics said that there will be several exhibitors on technology and PLDT already had signified although they are open for other information and communication technology exhibitors.

He said that because of continuous innovation, they had been attracting more of the industry to come in just like what is happening in Subic and Clark.

Duerme meanwhile said with DATE 2006 theme “Davao Goes Global” they want more industries to make business here.

He also said that they have to innovate and improve as there will be exhibitors from food manufacturers, poultry products and ICT.

Duerme also said that part of the activities aside from the exhibits on DATE 2006 from September 15 to 17 at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas are business matching, round table discussions on global opportunities, product and service presentations, raffle promo, jobs fair, trainings and seminars from DCCCII, Department of Agriculture and Department of Science and Technology.

There will also be Mindanao Investment Forum and WTO Forum to be spearheaded by the Department of Trade and Industry.

Yeah! correct ka dyan pare specially Crocodile park...Been there last Saturday with some of my Arab friends from Dubai and they were really amazed sa ganda at sa noble mission ng park na mapreserve some of our fast banishing croc species.

The park is really World Class...shows start at 4pm which are series of 4 events, the crocodile dancing, the Pangil encounter, animal petting and the main event, tight rope walking/dancing...entrance fee is P75 pax and then additional P25 pax for the butterfly house which is just beside the croc park.

MAy mga celebrities na rin minsan :)

i dont know with these gaisanos down south, but they all look so shabby. look at the ground level at the middle of the atrium. looks like a typical scene in divisoria, yes, a modified talipapa.

I agree. It doesn't have the "class" of an SM or Robinson's, and definitely, of Ayala. But definitely it's not your glorified talipapa. Maybe the Gaisanos have a another market segment in mind or maybe they want it to be a mall "for the masa." Not sure, though, because as you go up, the "masa" at the basement could surely not afford the shops up there. I'm confused.

By the way, here in Dubai or anywhere in the world, what makes a mall high-end or luxury is the presence of locators like Saks 5th Avenue, Cartier, DKNY, D&G, Chanel, or Starbucks. Without these shops, it's just your ordinary shopping mall. And based on this premise, wala pa palang class na mall ang Davao. Sana in the near future.

^^ hehehe.... speaking of My Way Song...

i dedicate this song to my friend valium...

Davao's Way

And now, kadayawan is here
And so I change my house's curtain
My friend, I'll say it clear
davao is nice, of which I'm certain
I've lived a life that's full
I traveled each and every city
And more, much more than this, i did davao's way

Parades, we had a few
But then again, floral parades too
I did indak-indak and saw it through rizal extension
I planned each charted course, each careful step, mac arthur highway
And more, much more than this, I did davao's way

Yes, there were times, roxas avenue
When I bit off more than I could chew
Kaan dawet, there was no doubt
I ate it up and take some out
at MTS, I drank it all and did davao's way

I've loved, horse fights and cried
at Agro grounds, my share of kicking
And now, as tears subside, I find durian so amusing
To think I eat all that
And may I say, not in a shy way,
"Oh, yes, oh, yes, it's me, I eat it my way"

For what is davao, what has it got?
valium himself, said it's a nut
he says the things he wrongly feels and hurt us all with all his nails
The record shows davao is best and that's davao's way

it's madaaaaaayaaaaaaaaawww wwwwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay... (falseto)

I can't help but belt this song while I read it. A jaded yet fabled song given a breath of novelty in a very Davaoeno way. That's the way I like it to be. Galing mo bai Junax.

DAVAO CITY

Davao City is one of the most important cities in the Philippines and the de facto capital of the island of Mindanao. It is also the largest city in the Philippines in terms of land area. Its international airport and seaport is one of the busiest cargo hubs in the Southern Philippines. Davao City is also one of several cities in the Philippines that are independent of any province though it is usually grouped with Davao del Sur for statistical purposes. The city is also the regional center for Davao Region (Region XI). It is one of the world's largest cities in terms of land area, occupying more than 2,400 square kilometers. Davao City has a resident population of 1.3 million, with about 2 million people present during daylight hours.

According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 1,147,116 people in 240,057 households.

It is currently one of the centers of BPO operations in the Philippines. The city is projected to earn at least US$5 billion in annual revenue by 2010, according a CITEM report.

In recent years, the sprawling urban metropolis has emerged as the business, investment and tourism hub for southern Philippines. The city boasts some of the finest beach and mountain resorts in the country, and proximity to the Philippines’ most captivating diving spots as well as its highest peak, Mt Apo.

HISTORY

claim that the word davao came from the phonetic blending of the word of three Bagobo subgroups when referring to Davao River, an essential waterway which empties itself into Davao Gulf near the city. The aboriginal Obos who inhabit the hinterlands of the region called the river, Davoh; the Clatta or Guiangans called it Duhwow, or Davau, and the Tagabawa Bagobos, Dabu. To the Obos, the word davoh also means a place "beyond the high grounds", alluding to the settlements located at the mouth of Davao River which were surrounded by high rolling hills. When asked where they were going, the usual reply is davoh, while pointing towards the direction of the town. Duhwow also refers to a trading settlement where they barter their forest goods in exchange for salt or other commodities.

Spanish influence was hardly felt in the Davao until 1848, when an expedition led by Don Jose Uyanguren came to establish a Christian settlement in an area of mangrove swamps that is now Bolton Riverside. Davao was then ruled by a Moro chieftain, Datu Bago, who held his settlement at the banks of Davao River (once called Tagloc River by the Bagobos). After Uyanguren defeated Datu Bago, he renamed the region Nueva Guipozcoa, in honor of his home in Spain, and became its first governor. Oyanguren's efforts to develop the area, however, did not prosper.

A few years after the American forces landed in 1900, private farm ownership grew and transportation and communication facilities were improved, thus paving the way for the region's economic growth.

A Japanese entrepreneur named Kichisaburo Ohta was granted permission to exploit vast territories which he transformed into abacá and coconut plantations. The first wave of Japanese plantation workers came onto its shores in 1903, creating a Japan kuo, or Little Japan. They had their own school, newspapers, an embassy, and even a Shinto Shrine. On the whole, they established extensive abaca plantations around the shores of Davao Gulf and developed large-scale commercial interests such as copra, timber, fishing and import-export trading. Filipinos learned the techniques of improved cultivation from the Japanese so that ultimately, agriculture became the lifeblood of the province's economic prosperity.

Davao was formally inaugurated as a chartered city on March 1, 1937 by President Manuel L. Quezon. Thirty years later, Davao was subdivided into three independent provinces, namely Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, and Davao Oriental. Over the years, Davao has become an ethnic melting pot as it continues to draw migrants from all over the country, lured by the prospects of striking it rich in the country's third largest city.

kahit via cebu ang 5J na HKG flight, dili man gihapon ni sya exactly connecting lang na flight kay my barkada who works for 5J said nga via International terminal man ghpon ang passengers..

its not like a davao-cebu flight tapos wait ka for the CEB-HKG nga flight kay same plane and muagi ra mag cebu to pick up the passengers..for the DVO-HKG (nga via cebu) wala may DVO-CEBU ra..so ok ra ghapon

You're right Graves but it's nicer to my ears if it was Davao-Hongkong, Hongkong-Davao. It migh just be me though. lol

WawaY[625]
August 8th, 2006, 06:10 PM
hehe..nagtitipid pa siguro ang 5J..besides trend na ata yan na may "via"talaga..like the DVO-SIN flight na meron DVO-CEB-SIN-DVO and DVO-SIN-CEB-DVO

in the case of HKG, parang lugi sila if they make it DVO-HKG straight kasi mas malapit ang Cebu..pero malay natin if magkaroon na ng MNL-DVO-SYD since mas malapit tayo sa Australia..tipis pa sila sa MNL-DVO na frequency..

parang yung MNL-DVO-Palau ng Asian Spirit

Bro...i think is considered as a direct flight (the 5j flight from Davao to Hongkong via Cebu) Here in Expedia, flights with lay overs are being considered as direct flights as long as the travelers do not change planes. That is the case of the Cebu Pac flight from Davao to Hk. They will just stop for awhile in Cebu to board some pax but the pax from Davao wont be changing terminals or planes for the next trip. Hence, it is a direct flight. :)

Thanks for the clarification Bro TJ, my ignorance! How many flights a week do we have in this route? Ikaw man gyud na ang naa sa tourism sector..lol, your department.

Date 2006 exhibitors confirm participation

FOREIGN and local exhibitors to the Davao Trade Expo (Date) 2006 have already confirmed participation while some made reservations to fill in the 140 booths that will be put up during the three-day exposition.

Date 2006 chair lawyer Domingo Duerme said there are 87 exhibitors who confirmed and about 30 who made reservations.
According to the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (DCCCII), among the foreign exhibitors that placed reservations are the US Embassy and Federal Express.

Duerme said they also expect more US foreign businesses to join the exhibit just like in 2005 when some 30 US-based companies participated.

He said with P82 million sales (book sales included) generated last year, they are targeting this year an increase of 25 percent as against the figure in 2005.

But Duerme added they were not able to follow up what went through with the book sales.

Comparative total sales generated during Date in 2003 accounted for P36 million in sales, 2004 with P55.5 million (with 55 percent over 2003), and 2005 with P82 million (or 32 percent increase from the previous year).

He said while last year's crowd drawer was on real property and agriculture they would expect technology to dominate as the best seller this year.

Cris Arietta, Date 2006 chair of logistics, said that there will be several exhibitors on technology and PLDT already had signified although they are open for other information and communication technology exhibitors.

He said that because of continuous innovation, they had been attracting more of the industry to come in just like what is happening in Subic and Clark.

Duerme meanwhile said with Date 2006 theme "Davao Goes Global," they want more industries to make business here.

He added that they have to innovate and improve, as there will be exhibitors from food manufacturers, poultry products and ICT.

Duerme said that part of the activities aside from the exhibits on Date 2006 are business matching, round table discussions on global opportunities, product and service presentations, raffle promo, jobs fair, trainings and seminars from DCCCII, Department of Agriculture and Department of Science and Technology.

There will also be Mindanao Investment Forum and World Trade Organization Forum to be spearheaded by the Department of Trade and Industry.

Date 2006 is slated from September 15 to 17 at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.

Davao was once Little Tokyo

Before the second world war, Davao was "Davao-kou" or Little Tokyo to many Japanese nationals. As much as 25,000 Japanese were living in Davao making it one of the largest concentration of Japanese outside of Japan itself.

The first Japanese to reach Davao in 1903 were workers hired by the new American colonizers (after Spain sold the Philippines to the US for $20 Million in the 1898 Treaty of Paris) for the agricultural plantations in this vast region. Three years ago, appropriate ceremonies marked the centennial of the Japanese arrival here.

During the boom years of the 1920s, the Japanese dominated the abaca (Manila hemp) industry in such districts as Toril, Mintal and Calinan. Remnants of the Japanese communities are still present in these areas such as water and irrigation systems, old buildings, monuments and cemeteries.

After the war, many of the Japanese were sent back home after the confiscation of their properties. They left behind many descendants, however, who are now known and organized as Nikkei Jin Kai.

Japan continued to play a pivotal role in the growth of the city. During the 1950s, the bulk of products of Davao's logging and plywood industries went to the rebuilding of Japan. During the 1960s, it was the turn of copper, gold and other minerals. Beginning in the 1970s, coconut oil and bananas dominated the trading; later on charcoals, carbons and tunas. Lately, Davao is reputed to be the biggest supplier of Japayukis (cultural entertainers).

Many of these issues will be retraced in a conference Strengthening Alternative Exchanges Between the Philippines and Japan to mark the 50 years of the resumption of diplomatic relations between the two nations. There will be a week long celebration in Davao during the last week of August and early September.

The Phil-Japan Frienship Year Conference is being organized by the Mindanao Kokusai Daigaku (Mindanao Japanese International College), probably the biggest Japanese school in the country.

Dean Nieto L. Vitto invited me to speak at the conference on two topics - attracting Japanese investment to Davao, particularly in tourism (eco and medical) and property development for Japanese retirees, and my proposal for establishing direct air links between Davao and Japanese cities.

The Japanese are this city's largest foreign visitors. There is also an increasing number of Japanese retirees and investors flocking to Davao. I would not be surprised that very soon, this city could once more become "Davao-kou."

Opening of BIMP-EAGA air routes pushed

THE government has opened up talks with various domestic and international airline companies for the immediate opening of additional air routes among key cities in the Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines-East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA).

Tourism undersecretary Oscar Palabyab said members of the sub-region's joint tourism development cluster agreed to prioritize the establishment of regular air linkages among the area's key cities in a bid to accelerate the integration of tourism development initiatives in the region.

He said the move was endorsed by BIMP-EAGA tourism officials, who recently met in Koronadal City, as part of the implementation of the five-year BIMP-EAGA roadmap to development and action plan that started this year.

"Among these priorities is to immediately set up the air connections between Davao or Palawan and Kota Kinabalu in Sabah (Malaysia)," Palabyab said.

He said the proposed air route will complement the ongoing efforts by the sub-region's stakeholders to strengthen the air connections within the Borneo Island, which covers Sarawak and Sabah of Malaysia, Kalimantan of Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam.

Palabyab said the government is considering the establishment of the air linkages between Davao or Palawan and Kota Kinabalu as it will eventually connect the southern part of the country "to the rest of the world."

The Kota Kinabalu International Airport, which serves more than 70 international flights a week, is presently one of the busiest airports in the Asean region.

Among the airline companies reportedly interested about the proposed air route is Mosphil Aero Inc., a new airline put up by Russian and Filipino businessmen.

Mosphil, according to its corporate profile, will operate low-cost passenger and cargo flights covering various international and domestic destinations from its base in Clark, Pampanga.

The airline said it has already obtained its air carrier operating certificate from the Air Transportation Office and permits from the Civil Aviation Board for passenger and cargo services.

The company earlier announced its plans to open flights for various routes in Mindanao.

These include flights to Palau via Davao and Zamboanga City to Sandakan in Malaysia.
Palabyab said they expect more airline companies to venture in the BIMP-EAGA soon with the liberalization of the sub-region's air travel regime.

Last month, the government decided to revive the travel tax exemptions for travel within the sub-region in support of such development. The tax exemption was last implemented in December 2004. (Allen V. Estabillo)

Caraga lawmakers back Minda railway system
By Ben Serrano
Caraga Correspondent

BUTUAN CITY -- Butuan City Representative Leovigildo Banaag and Surigao del Sur Representative Prospero Pichay Jr. are pushing for the immediate start of the much awaited Mindanao Railway System Project.

The two Mindanao lawmakers said the cheap means of transportation it can provide for the people and goods in Mindanao will spur economic development and progress of the country's second largest island.

Banaag, chairman of the House Committee on Natural Resources told Sun.Star, the railway system for Mindanao can provide fast and cheap transportation of goods of the island from its vast, rich natural and agricultural resources.

"Cheap means of transporting goods and people can reduce additional cost of finished products sold in markets and more people easily move around which means more tourism investments because of accessibility," Banaag explained.

Although, in the original plan Surigao del Sur was not part of the railway system project Pichay said the project will indirectly benefit Caraga Region.

According to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Regional Director Benjamen Tumaliuan, Caraga Region supplies 65 percent of the country's wood supply needs in the lumber and furniture industries.

Among the 37 mining investment areas in the country, 17 are situated in Caraga Region, which produces gold, copper, nickel and chromite.

Phase 1 of the project is the cities of Cagayan de Oro-Butuan-Surigao line, which covers a total distance of 320 kilometers.

A pre-feasibility study was recently done by Transport East West Expert Team GmbH Germany known as "TEWET" and the Austrian Rail Engineering (ARE) based in Vienna, Austria.

The National Government through the Philippine National Railways (PNR) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the project under a concessional loan extended by the governments of Austria and Germany.

Phase III of the Mindanao Railway System Project is the cities of Butuan-Davao-General Santos line which covers a total of 390 kilometers passing through provinces of Agusan del Sur, Compostela Valley, Davao del Norte and Saranggani.
The project will be handled also by foreign railway construction giants, TEWET of Germany and Austrian Rail Engineering (ARE) Banaag and Pichay claimed that since the pre-feasibility studies have already been completed the National Government and the governments of Austria and Germany can start the project the soonest.

The cities of Iligan-Zamboanga line are to be handled by the Ministry of Railways of the Government of India through its subsidiary IPCON International Limited and the Thaipicon and Industry Co. Ltd. (TPCON) of Thailand.

TPCON and IPCON are also responsible for the construction of the cities of Cagayan de Oro-Iligan line.

Korean group to assist city
By Peter L. Magbanua Published : 2006-08-08

THE Davao Korean Association (DKA) has vowed to help the city by implementing various projects. Johnny Kim, DKA president, said that their association is looking for possible beneficiaries for their projects.

“We have already considered the idea of helping the Bantay Bata program.
We are Koreans who are living in the city for so many years. I think it’s about time for us to show our support to the city and the Philippines,” said Kim, also the Philippine Taekwondo Association Region 11 director.

Kim added that he is also encouraging the members of the association to pay their taxes in order to boost the city’s economy. “We want to help the city in any way possible like taxes and other projects.

Right now we would like to announce that there will be two flights every week starting this September directly to South Korea. This will open the doors for investors and tourists. Then, by November from two flights weekly, it will be a regular flight for South Korea to the Philippines,” Kim explained, although he did not mention the airlines.

Aside from that, Kim said that they will also help other Koreans who are not members of the association on how to start a business in the city and how to get their visas and working visas process. “

If our projects, which we are coordinating with the Korean embassy in Manila, will push through we will be helping a lot of Filipinos and at the same time invite more Koreans to come and visit the Philippines and invest here,” Kim stressed.

There are about 100 active members of the association and about 500 Korean families living in the city.

Wow! am looking forward to this....sana matuloy, atleast pag punta mo sa Riverfront marami kang option whether to waterfront promenade, river cruise, crodile park, white water rafting(i guess the're offering now).

Sana din madevelop ang riversides hanggang Agro Industrial Foundation or even up to the mouth of the river with a nature's touch ambiance/scenery...am sure that would make davao a hit for tourists..and even achieve a greater-than-ever placement as the BEST LIVABLE CITIES IN THE WORLD ranking....
