City gov’t opens satellite voters’ registration booths for Davao media practitioners (http://www.pna.gov.ph/index.php?idn=2&sid=&nid=2&rid=230739)

DAVAO CITY, Sept. 21 (PNA) -- The city government here opened on Monday a satellite voters’ registration booth at People’s Park for the benefit of media practitioners in this city.

Oscar Casaysay of the Office of the City Mayor said the one-day registration benefited the media people.

Casaysay said the event, dubbed "Boto Kami: Media Fair," started at 10 a.m. and will end at 7 p.m.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) will accommodate 5,000 registrants for the entire event.

“This move is good because the media is the forerunners of change and yet they are the once who don’t have the time to register,” Casaysay said.

He added that now the media will be more effective in its advocacy for change because they have registered.

Casaysay said the event will also receive participation from media regulatory boards.

"There will be statements from the Kapisanan ng mg Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP), Philippine Press Institute (PPI), campus journalists and film makers,” he said.

Meanwhile, a musical program will be held in the evening after the activity, he said.

"Samadhi, a local musicians group, will perform. Other local artists will also come and there will be a covenant signing," Casaysay said.

The event will also be participated in by Magnegosyo ta 'Day, a women's program created by the local government unit (LGU) for the benefit of unemployed women.

"Booths will showcase their products," Casaysay said. (PNA)

BoI pursues one-on-one investment drive
By BERNIE CAHILES-MAGKILAT

http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/221623/boi-pursues-oneonone-investment-drive

With only three months to go before the year ends, the Board of Investments is pursuing a one-on-one investment promotion campaigns in targeted countries and specific investors saying this is more effective during this crisis time in luring investors rather than conducting a general investment missions.

Fresh from his successful one on one investment promotion campaign in China, Trade and Industry Undersecretary and BoI managing head Elmer C. Hernandez is off again on an investment promotions campaign in Korea starting Sept. 22 to 25. Hernandez has a busy schedule for the rest of the year attending to various investment missions to several countries.

“I think one-on-one meetings with specific investors are more effective this time,” Hernandez told reporters.

In Korea, Hernandez would be attending two functions: one on one investment meetings with prospective investors sponsored by the ASEAN Korean Center and a conference on foreign direct investments in East Asia.

For his one-on-one meetings, Hernandez is going to meet with some of the big Korean companies interested on investing in power generation in the country using green energy sources.

Hernandez has refused to identify the Korean investors saying it may jeopardize the companies’ plans.

He, however, said that power has been one of the investor’s main businesses although it is also strong in the shipbuilding sector while two other firms are into biofuels and wind power energy generation. Another firm is also interested in mining and hydro power and liquefied natural gas power generation.

Hernandez is also meeting another Korean firm engaged in the production of xylose, an artificial sweetener from coco shells.

“This firm has finalized its decision to invest here after long years of courtship but it has yet to register with the BoI,” he said. This particular Korean company has chosen to locate in Davao. Hernandez will also hold discussion with an investor in hotel and resort facility and a semiconductor company.

Unfortunately, we havent heard any developments till now....Nevertheless, kudos to our local government and business chamber for such efforts. ;)

mindanao business council was concieved and born in davao. and you should know that island wide conventions of it were brought to evry city whos with caapabilty to host. medco is/was based in davao city did not benefit only the city. it was short changed as the focus of its programs of developments were geared to other regions including yours. who are now enjoying the fruits of its efforts. your region and others. your regions are benefeciARIES OF infrastructure development grants from donor cour countries including educational developlments and other human development prorams through the effort of medco

ang alam ko (through the newspapers) medco is focusing more sa labas ng davao city, mas maraming inaambon ang medco specialy sa mga less developed areas sa mindanao. some of their projects are infrastructure and development, business and etc... at sa pagkaka alam ko kaunti lang talaga ang projects na inaambon ng medco sa davao CITY.

Sea ambulance sets sail in Samal
Monday, 21 September 2009 04:49
PDF

by Noel Baguio

The much-awaited sea ambulance has finally arrived in the Island Garden City of Samal.
The sea ambulance, a 25-person capacity ferry which will be equipped with emergency facilities and supplies could withstand inclement weather conditions and waves.
Gov. Rodolfo Del Rosario, who provided P1 million to build the boat, led the launching of the sea ambulance last September 15, 2009 at the Kinawitnon wharf, Babak District, Island Garden City of Samal.
He said this is a fulfillment of the long-time request of the people for a reliable less expensive conveyance for referred patients in emergency situations.
“The people of the Island Garden City of Samal had been asking for such an ambulance and now the Provincial Government has fulfilled its promise to provide one,” the governor said.
He added this is in line with his administration’s thrust of enhancing the delivery of basic health services, especially to those indigent patients who need immediate referral to public tertiary hospitals in the region.
The province operates a district hospital in the island city. But, due to budgetary constraints, the hospital lacks crucial state-of-the-art equipment and facilities needed to effectively deal with terrible traumas and other cases that require immediate medical/surgical attention.
A local official revealed some experiences before where certain patients that were referred from rural health centers to tertiary hospitals in Davao City who were denied of immediate medical/surgical attention because of high cost of hiring a private or passenger vessel.
The Island City Government of Samal and the district hospital operate several ambulance units. But, he said transporting the patient by land could drag since getting across into the mainland is totally dependent on the availability of ferry boats plying across the channel.
Provincial Administrator Rufo Peligro said the delivery of basic health service by the availability of a sea ambulance will bring back the sense of well-being in the people’s health consciousness.
He added the government-owned vessel will provide a less expensive conveyance for referred emergency patients, which significantly reduce the mortality rate that is directly or indirectly caused by the lack of money and immediate vessels.
After its blessing, the governor boarded the boat on its maiden voyage going to Punta Azul Beach Resort. He was joined by resort owner and Davao Region Tourism Council Chair Araceli Ayuste, Vice Mayor Orly Amit, Davao Regional Hospital Chief Dr. Romulo Busuego, Provincial Administrator Rufo Peligro, Provincial General Services Officer Sammy Sanchez, and Samal District Hospital Dr. Roselito Antonio Patricio, and the governor’s son Rodney, among other local officials.

Trade conventions prove it is business as usual in Davao
Monday, 21 September 2009 02:36
PDF
The world may be in recession but it is business as usual in Davao City as conventions and conferences are being held after another, the latest of which is the three-day Davao Trade Expo (DATE) which opened Thursday, September 17, 2009.
Just last month, the city hosted three big conferences namely the Mindanao Trade Expo, the ICT Summit and the Mindanao Tourism Expo which were attended by thousands of domestic and international visitors.
DATE, which is considered as one of the biggest trade events in Mindanao, is not only a trade fair that promotes Mindanao’s products. It is also a valuable venue for those who are seeking employment and business opportunities.
“We are currently facing tough times due to the financial crisis (but) let us not allow the crisis to overcome us, let’s do business as usual in Davao City,” said Atty. Domingo Duerme, Senior Assistant Vice President for Mindanao Sales of Philippine Airlines, during the opening of DATE. Duerme is also a former DATE chair.
Duerme said the global crisis has resulted to a slow down in tourism and a lesser demand for export. Under this scenario, he said, “it is not easy to gather sponsors and exhibitors especially when all businesses are on cost management and preparing for more stormy days to come.”
But despite the odds, he said, “we are again gathered today and striving hard to sustain the seeds planted for DATE some eleven years ago.”
Duerme challenged Mindanao’s business community to “bind ourselves together and push for business growth.” He urged the business sector and the community as well to take this event as an opportunity to meet and expand their networks and markets.
“You can use this event to meet potential partners and clients by showcasing the best of your products and services,” he said, adding that Mindanao businesses should also take advantage of the ongoing seminars and trainings to increase the potential of their businesses.
DATE has managed to change with the times. Instead of being just a venue for showcasing Mindanao products, it has now included a Jobs Fair primarily designed to help the unemployed and the new graduates find employment opportunities.
“Focusing on employment is one way of cushioning the economic crisis,” said Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCCII) president Simeon Marfori.
Thousands of job seekers packed the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Thursday, hoping to get one of the almost 2000 domestic and foreign job opportunities available during the job fair which featured 45 employers.
Among the job vacancies featured during the DATE Jobs Fair were in the areas of overseas employment, information technology and health.
As assured by DATE Chair Dr. Maria Lourdes Monteverde, most of the applicants have been hired directly considering the Department of Labor and Employment’s prohibition on manpower pooling.
One of the highlights of DATE is the revival of the Davao Region Business Conference which was held last Saturday. Marfori said the conference was last staged in 2006 and its resurgence was highly welcomed by the business sector.
Members of the Federation of the Davao Region Chambers of Commerce led by Marfori signed the multilateral agreement in developing the “One Davao. One Progress” during the conference.

De Bonte Koe
Habana Compund, Rizal St., Davao City

Located in the heart of Davao City along the busy streets of Rizal lurks the most cozy and elegant bistro "De Bonte Koe." De Bonte Koe the restaurant-pub-steak house is located inside the Habana Compound. TRANSLATED into Dutch, it literally means "the spotted (or colorful) cow.” In the Netherlands (Holland), however, it has a double meaning, an expression used when you do something funny or naughty. According to Dutch owner, Henny Smits, the goal is to give customers "comfortable surroundings, quality time, and service with a naughty attitude." So if you happened to visit Davao, don't forget to drop by on this chic and sophisticated resto, come and visit now! Above are the pics I took during our dinner... Mouth-watering, isn't it? Bon Appétit!!

A sight for everyone to behold, as the rare and endangered, majestic Philippine Eagle (Pithecophaga Jeffreyi) spreads its wings as you tour the Philippine Eagle Research and Nature Center in Malagos Protected Landscape in Calinan, 45 minutes away from the City Center. At the Malagos Garden Resort, marvel at swarms of colorful butterflies as they flit from flower to flower and the different species of birds at the birdwalk of Eden Nature Park & Resort before proceeding to Crocodile Farm

There are two regular huge, friendly pythons you can touch and, together with your friends, carry on your shoulders if you're enough. A variety of exotic birds are on display, from parrots, hornbills, ostriches to eagles. Two new baby albino snakes are showcased in their attractive, glowing yellow skin. Other popular exotic animals in their new shelters are bearcats, iguanas, two playful orangutans, and big lizards. The park also hosts recreational and ecotourism sites such as Butterfly enclosure, Koi Pond and other fish nurseries, flower orchards, hatcheries, new raptor cages, huts and restaurants, perfect for a family's one day.

Davao Gulf no longer risky, encouraging idle vessels to park in the area

GMANews.TV - Wednesday, September 23

The Davao Gulf has been removed from a list of areas with perceived enhanced risk, encouraging shipping companies – both local and foreign – to park their vessels in the area.

The decision was announced on September 14 by a group of London-based marine insurance companies called the Joint War Committee (JWC). Composed of the Lloyd’s of London and the London-based International Underwriters Association, the group issues insurance for vessels, especially those plying dangerous areas.

The decision “will make anchorage areas in Davao Gulf – particularly Malalag and Bunawan Bays, Pujada Bay and Mayo Bay – a more attractive option for international shipping companies which intend to lay-up their idle vessels at the facilities opened by the Philippine government for this purpose," the Department of Foreign Affairs said on its website on Tuesday.

Philippine Ambassador to the Court of St. James in London Antonio Lagdameo welcomed the JWC decision, noting London is considered as the maritime capital of the world.

Lagdameo is also the Permanent Representative of the Philippines to the International Maritime Organization.

The announcement “validates government efforts to make Mindanao a stable and peaceful place for international shipping companies to do business," Lagdameo said.

Last May, Maritime Industry Authority Administrator Maria Elena Bautista led a delegation of officials from the Philippine Embassy in London and the Philippine Coast Guard to meet with executives of Aegis Defence Services (Aegis), JWC's external security consultant.

The Philippine delegation formally briefed them on the peace and order situation in Davao Gulf.

Bautista highlighted the peaceful environment in Davao Gulf which is supportive of attracting international shipping companies to lay-up their idle merchant vessels in the area.

A team from Aegis was then invited to the Philippines in mid-August to inspect the measures undertaken by the national and local government agencies to eliminate or minimize any security risk to international merchant vessels that would be availing of the lay-up facilities in Davao Gulf. - GMANews.TV

History of Samal

The Municipality of Samal derived its name from the Isamals who were its first inhabitants. The Isamals were brought by the first and second waves of migration from the Malay Region of Southeast Asia, dynastically ruled by a Datu up to the early part of the American Regime. The latest ruling tribal Chieftain was Datu Taganiog who died on January 28, 1948. Discovery revealed that the latter lived at "Malibasa" (now known as Peñaplata, the poblacion) where he exercised his general supervision. The word "Malibasa" meant honorable. The Isamals lived in perfect harmony as peace-loving people.

When the Department of Mindanao and Sulu was formed by the American Government, the Governor-General created the archipelago into a district municipality which was composed of the Island of Samal, Talicud, Cruz, Ligid, the Malipano Islets and the Arboles (Sanipahan). The district was governed by the District President, District Vice-President and the members of the town council whose term of office depended on the trust and confidence of the Provincial Governor who was the appointing officer.

On July 8, 1948, the District Municipality of Samal was created into a regular municipal corporate by virtue of Executive Order No. 151, issued by the late President Elpedio Quirino. District Mayor Apolonio Mahinay was reappointed by Provincial Governor Miranda as the Municipal Mayor of the Island Municipality of Samal, which position he held until December 31, 1951, He lost the mayoralty position to the late Municipal Mayor Simplicio B. Obenza during the elections of November 8, 1951. Unfortunately, Mayor Obenza died on July 7, 1971 and was succeeded by his Vice Mayor Felix O. Solamo, Jr. who was also defeated by Mayor Galileo S. Obenza, the son of the late Mayor, in November 1971 elections.

On May 28, 1953, the daughter Municipality of Babak was created by virtue of Executive Order No. 586, issued by President Quirino. The division of the old Province of Davao into three (3) provinces ensued. The southern portions of Samal Island was created as the Municipality of Kaputian by virtue of Republic Act No. 4745 dated July 18, 1966 issued by the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos leaving Babak which was the mother municipality with fifteen (15) Barangays. In early 60's, the Municipality of Samal was predominated by Cebuanos constituting 70% the total number of population while the 22% were Isamals and the 8% were composed of Boholanos, Ilonggos, Leytenos, Muslims and others from Luzon. Most of the island inhabitants were farmers and fishermen. There were only few professionals.

Generally, Samal Municipality is characterized by uneven distribution of lowlands, wide expanse of mountain ranges and few isolated hills. Tayapoc, renowned for its "Puting Bato" or White Stone is Samal range's highest peak towering at 162 meters above the sea level. The Puting-batoSopsopon Plateau lies on its top with an approximate area of 400 hectares.

A number of waterways can also be found in the municipality, though none of them is navigable. The Hagimit FallsHagimit Falls which is approximately 15 feet high, the Binoling River and several other natural springs, namely: Supa, Alibungog, Tagbitinao, Tagbitan-ag, Aundanao, Licup, San Jose and Tagdaliao Springs are among the few popular sites found in the island.

The historical traces of the name of this developing island town came to surface from information gathered through investigations and personal interviews with some native chieftains on how the place got its name. Based on unrecorded history, the place was sparsely populated by few farming natives called Isamals who first settled the coastal areas of the island. There were no known surveyed roads then except for a few trails and pathways criss-crossing the lowland areas. Thick forest and green land still covered the island's virgin soil.

The isolated unnamed coastal area was abundant with leafy shrubs called "tagbak" which were used by the natives in making baskets and containers for their fish catch, storing food and other household materials. The place had been the source of "tagbak", the main materials for their native handicrafts.

The regular "taboan" in the place was near a big tree which the natives called "bakbak". The "taboan" known as bakbak was later renamed as "BabakBabak". It became a landmark and was established as the commercial hub of the island dwellers, inland natives and visiting traders from the nearby communities.

Kaputian was once a part of Samal municipality. It can be found along the westerncoast of the southernmost part of Samal Island. Before it was created into a barangay the locality was occupied by the native people of Samal Island better known as Isamals. The place was, and still is, is by nature blessed with white sand and clear seawater Corals and other marine resources can be seen loitering and littering along its unspoiled powdery white shorelines and pristine waters. Its scenic location was a rendezvous or relaxation place for everybody, more particularly for fishermen who simply wanted to relax and drink local wine called "tuba" after their whole day fishing in the gulf.

According to the early settlers, lush vegetation crowned the Municipality of Kaputian. Before the Second World War, Don Vicente Fernandez together with Don Ramon and Don Pepe Fernandez acquired and cultivated the southern part of Samal which was ruled by Datu Budas. It was during the early period of American occupation when Hacienda Samal and Compana Maritima was founded.

On June 18, 1966 , the Philippine Congress historically made a landmark legislation through enabling laws passed under "Republic Act 4754" that opened the establishment of the municipality of Kaputian, separating it from it's mother municipality which was Babak. R.A.4754 mandate included the islets of Malipano and Talicud Island as part of Kaputian District. Later, Executive order 184 signed by the President Ferdinand E. Marcos, legally declared Kaputian as another municipality of Davao Province.

Pinoy mobile phone brand opens 1st store in Davao
Tuesday, September 22, 2009
By Carlo P. Mallo

THE first Filipino brand in mobile phones opened its first concept store in Davao City on Tuesday.

Located at the 3rd floor of Gaisano Mall of Davao, MyPhone concept store opened two years after the brand was started by the Solid Broadband Corporation (Solid Group) of the Lim family, the same family behind the distribution of Sony in the country.

For updates from around the country, follow Sun.Star on Twitter

"This is undoubtedly the first Filipino brand in the mobile phone industry," said Jingo Fermin, president of MyTel Mobility Solutions Inc., the arm of Solid Group in-charge with the MyPhone brand.

The MyPhone brand is the first to have brought in the dual SIM technology in the country, as well as the customization of applications and design that will suit the Filipino taste.

"It is a phone for the Filipino by the Filipino," Fermin told Sun.Star Davao.

At present, MyPhone has acquired at least two percent of the market share of the mobile phone industry in the Philippines, a big feat for its two-year existence.

"We position ourselves for the low to mid-range markets," said Kevin Tan, vice president for merketing of the Solid Group.

For the last quarter of the year and the first quarter of 2010, MyPhone will be taking the market aggressively with new models that will offer the "Qwerty" function at very low prices.

"Our focus is the Filipino market and we design our phone for the Filipino market," Tan said.

MyPhone applications include peculiarly Filipino features, such as novenas, original Pilipino music, and Filipino street jokes. For its mobile phone units, the highest cost of a unit is at about P8,000 only.

Davao Gulf no longer risky, encouraging idle vessels to park in the area

GMANews.TV - Wednesday, September 23

Lloyd’s opens Davao Gulf Lay-Up Facility to International Shippers
September 22, 2009 by DFA-PISU

PR-743-09, 22 September 2009 – Philippine Ambassador to the Court of St. James in London Antonio M. Lagdameo reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that the Lloyd’s Joint War Committee (JWC) has decided to delist Davao Gulf from its areas with perceived enhanced risk.

The September 14 decision will make anchorage areas in Davao Gulf – particularly Malalag and Bunawan Bays, Pujada Bay and Mayo Bay – a more attractive option for international shipping companies which intend to lay-up their idle vessels at the facilities opened by the Philippine Government for this purpose.

Ambassador Lagdameo, who is concurrently the Permanent Representative of the Philippines to the International Maritime Organization, welcomed the JWC decision, and said; “London is considered as the maritime capital of the world. The decision taken by the Joint War Committee a few days ago validates the satisfactory efforts undertaken by Philippine government agencies to make Mindanao a stable and peaceful place for international shipping companies to do business.”

Last May, MARINA Administrator Maria Elena Bautista led a delegation of officials from the Philippine Embassy in London and the Philippine Coast Guard to meet with officials of Aegis Defence Services (Aegis), the external security consultant of JWC, to formally brief them on the peace and order situation in Davao Gulf. Administrator Bautista highlighted the peaceful environment in Davao Gulf which is supportive of attracting international shipping companies to lay-up their idle merchant vessels in the area.

A team from Aegis was then invited to the Philippines in mid-August to inspect the measures undertaken by the national and local government agencies to eliminate or minimize any security risk to international merchant vessels that would be availing of the lay-up facilities in Davao Gulf. It was this team that briefed the JWC on the situation prevailing in the Davao Gulf Area.

The JWC is composed of underwriting representatives from both the Lloyd’s and company markets of the International Underwriting Association. It represents the interest of those writing war and related risks within the London market and meets quarterly. END

Floirendo group of companies joins MinBC PDF Print E-mail

Written by Manuel T. Cayon / Reporter
Wednesday, 23 September 2009 20:41

DAVAO CITY—The group of companies owned by Davao del Norte-based businessman Antonio Floirendo Sr. has joined the Mindanao Business Council (MinBC), which increased its corporate membership to 14.

Anflo Management & Investment Corp. (Anflocor) was accepted as a member of the Mindanao-wide organization of business chambers and industry players recently, and joined the corporate sector that includes high-profile members such as Smart Communications, Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp., San Miguel Foods Inc. and Holcim Philippines.

MinBC chairman Vicente Lao said the entry of Anflocor “further strengthened the role of MinBC in island-wide development efforts in partnership with its members.”

“We are both humbled and privileged by the trust accorded by the Anflo Group to the MinBC in our mutual goal of building a stronger and more united business community in Mindanaoan,” he said in a statement.

“It is our firm belief that only through collaborative efforts with our members are we able to disperse opportunities in other less-developed areas in Mindanao, and thereby achieve a balanced and socially responsive economic growth on the island,” Lao said.

On its web site, Anflocor said it manages several companies “engaged in growing and exporting of bananas and pineapples, real-estate development and leasing, beach-resort operation, manufacturing of corrugated boxes, plastic products and labels, processing and/or supplying fresh-meat products, growing of citrus fruits, trucking, arrastre and stevedoring, cold-storage rental, automotive dealership, financing, retailing, breeding of race horses, hog raising and production of bottled preserves.”

Anflocor was organized in 1977.

MinBC has a total of 27 members, composed of 14 corporate members, including Anflocor, three affiliate members and 10 associate members. It has a network of 30 local business chambers across Mindanao. Most are engaged in food processing and manufacturing of export fruits and other products like bananas, pineapples, tuna and coconut. Some are also into oil exploration and refinery.

Correct. The honorable councilor was trying to point out that the Special Permit to Operate secured by the developers of Deca Wakeboard Park would not suffice to sustain its operations. He was the majority floor leader (or still is) when the committee hearing for the issuance of the Special Permit was held. He should have identified the lapses of the developer, if any, as early as that time.

Honoring national artist Bienvenido Lumbera
Written by: Somera , Emelita
Thursday, 24 September 2009

AT LAST, after years of waiting, Davaoeños can now witness and honor the work of one of the five living National Artist of the country, Dr. Bienvenido Lumbera.
‘Pagpupugay kay Bienvenido Lumbera’ is a joint project of the National Commission for Culture and Arts (NCCA) and the Likhaan UP Institute of Creative Writing with the coordination of LCB Performing Arts Center Foundation Dance Company (LCB-PACF).
‘Pagpupugay sa Pambansang Alagad ng Sining’ is an annual activity which started in 2007, it aims to give honor and tribute to national artists. Its main objective is to introduce artists and writers to the people, and bring these artists to places they call home. Dr. Bienvenido Lumbera was lucky enough to visit Lipa and Laoag, now he is coming to Davao since he considers this his second home. Four other national artists already visited their respective homelands, Dr. Francisco Sionil Jose visited Rosales, Pangasinan, Dr. Alejandro Roces visited the City of Makati, Dr. Edith Tiempo to Cebu and Dekano Virgilio Almario to Iloilo.
“We are very honored and challenged to do a dance production of one of our National artists, it has always been our passion to bring their works closer to the people, students and most specially to the younger generations”, Lu Chin Bon, Pres. of LCB-PACF and producer of the ‘Pagpupugay para kay Bienvenido Lumbera’ told the Times.

Since their target audience is the students of Davao, Lu already distributed tickets to Davao Christian High School, Ateneo de Davao University and the University of the Philippines. “We already gave tickets to schools, in fact we already gave 65 invites for UP alone, we can only accommodate 600 seats though,” Lu said.
“ I am so excited since it is a daring attempt for us to do a dance interpretation of Rizal’s sentiments and ideas of the socio-political conditions under the Spanish rule,” Lu added. Aside from a lecture covering Lumbera’s genre, a production showcasing his work will also be presented during the one day event. Excerpts from Lumbera’s adaptation of Jose Rizal’s work will be presented entitled Noli Me Tangere, The Musical.
Noli Me Tangere, the Musical was first presented in 1994 by Tanghalang Pilipino of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and was set to music by Ryan Cayabyab. The Davao adaptation is directed by Josie Tejada with the son of Lu, Jasper Jan as the choreographer. LCB-PACF has been in the business for 11 years already, “It is the first time for us to do a production in a national level, we thank NCCA and UP Likhaan as they chose us to do a dance interpretation,” Lu said.
The ‘Pagpupugay kay Bienvenido Lumbera’ will be held at CAP Auditorium, along Anda St. on October 2, 2009, 7 PM. For further questions on free admissions you can contact there office at 0917-700-2644 or (082) 222-5205.

maybe he realised the project is that big. big project can be source of extra (?big)income to enterprising people in the governemtn. especially the fact that investor was able to save from boi incentives. can be easy target/prospect. weighing this greedy options, interest of the city was not in his agenda. just my opinion.

Durian fruit harvest floods Davao (http://www.pna.gov.ph/index.php?idn=&nid=11&rid=231229)
By Digna D. Banzon

DAVAO CITY, Sept. 23 (PNA) -- Davao is again experiencing an oversupply of durian fruit this year after it experienced a drop in production last year.

The bountiful harvest has prompted the Durian Industry Council of Davao (DICD) to look at a regular scheme on how to move the fruit to Luzon and Visayas markets.

Candelario Miculob, board of trustees of DICD and the Mindanao Fruit Industry Council (MFIC) said but this year's production has not yet surpassed that of 2007. The supply now will last for the next two months.

He recalled that with 2007's figure of production farm gate price was pegged at P8 and sold in the market between P18 to P20 per kilo.

The prevailing farm gate price of durian now is at P18 per kilo and the fruit is sold at P30 a kilo and as high as P60 for the hybrid variety.

The Davao supply comes from Kidapawan, Davao City, Davao del Norte, Compostela Valley Province. However, other areas in Mindanao like Bukidnon are also starting to produce a good volume of the fruit.

He said based on their experience for the past five years, the durian season comes in late August, the month where Davao City celebrates the Kadayawan Festival which is a celebration of bountiful harvests and the rich culture and natural resources.

Miculob admitted that they had difficulty with their projection because they do not have the data and what they had been doing is just based on their individual assessment of their farm production.

He said it will really be of help if such data is available because they would be able to come up with projection as well as improve their business through marketing and distribution.

He said with specific information the DICD can also come up with programs and projects in which they could coordinate with the government in terms of assistance to small farm producers.

Right now he said they do marketing plan based on their field production and forecast is based by individual propagation.

The durian production in Thailand, he said is already an industry and 85 percent of their production is for local consumption and the tourists and only 15 percent goes out to foreign market.

Comparing this to Davao the per capita consumption has picked up where most of the locals are already patronizing the fruit.

Meanwhile, he said what they are facing in this industry is the problem of distribution because it is concentrated in Mindanao but efforts are being done by individual planters that already have established markets.

He said they join exhibits and trade shows if only to get buyers in volume either in Manila or Cebu.

He said when they can move the fruit to other markets there will be no oversupply and this is where the farmers are benefited because it could fetch high prices even as farm gate.

Miculob further said there is a need to improve the durian production considering that a farm, if not properly cared for, is attacked by borer and fungus.

He said low farm maintenance would entail field losses of up to 20 percent.

On the other hand, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is assisting small and medium entrepreneurs wherein they extend technology assistance and consultancy for them to improve on their businesses.

DOST regional director for Davao Region Dr. Anthony Sales said their food processing assistance is an appropriate technology that would help address this concern because with the over supply for instance of the durian fruit, it can be processed into candies and jams and other related products.

Together with this assistance is also on packaging and label designing that will enhance the product bearing quality packaging and labels. (PNA)

Peoples Parks are planted with an estimated 1,101 species of plants and trees from the rainforests of the Philippines, Southeast Asia , Australia, New Guinea, South and Central America, and Africa and Madagascar.

Of the park’s over four-hectare land area, almost 10, 000 square meters are allotted to plants. Horticulturist groups, like the Orchid Society of Davao and the Mindanao Federation of Cutflowers, are also invited to display their plants whole-year round, she said.

Dencias - best breakfast. try tokwat goto and lugaw arroz caldo
Spiralle - best pizza here in davao and also has great angus steak
Luz Kinilaw - Tuna panga and roe
Marina - Top class variety of sea food. Swordfish steak!
Penongs - Delicious chicken, pinakbet, grilled pork and grilled isol!
Dusk till dawn - known for native chiken barbecue
Tsuru - offers best japanese food here in davao. every 15 n 30 buffet
Claudes - offers great sea food dish and juicy steak
Lachis - Must try the Laing pasta with bangus. Grilled porkchop really good. Sansrival, cheesecake and cupcakes are the best here in davao
Humbertos - yummy chocolate cake
Margies kitchen - has many different varieties of delicious cake
Ahfat - Lomi satee really good!
Emerald - best to eat chinese panto place. yummy taro puff and serves good Chinese dishes
Khash - good persian restaurant. Great kebab!
Blugre - Best coffee in Davao
Cecil - delicious palabok, lumpia and cake!
Kakimkris - Tastiest lechon in Davao. too bad they only do caterings and special orders
Picobello - Buy 1 take 1 pizza 2pm-5pm! but not as good as spiralles pizza

I've tried almost all the restaurant here in Davao and don't be fooled by the advertising

BTW all of these are just base on my own perspective.

If i have not made a comment on the restaurant its either I was not satisfied or I still have not tried. But fyi, I have eaten almost all the restaurant here in davao.

Ciao

it was all for show, as widely been believed...why?

there are certain cetral mindanano personalities who disregard, disrespect traffic other rules and about every other rule there is in the City....they disregard traffic lights, go against the flow of traffic, openly use strobe lights like they are part of the first family...and even berate drivers in front of them who follow these rules...in short, mga baga ug nawong, who think they are above the law.

aside from them, meron din ibang tao who drag his name when they are apprehended.

so the Mayor took it upon himself to show these buffons and uncivilized people, na siya nga nagpapahuli, sila pa kaya?

DAVAO CITY — The R5.1-billion Hedcor Sibulan hydropower project in Barangay Sibulan, Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur will start commercial operations on Oct. 31, bouying up the communities around it which is expected to get an estimated R700 million in benefits over a period of several years.

Rene Ronquillo, president of Hedcor, said the 42.5 megawatt power plant is a project of the Aboitiz Power which will utilize and harness the Sibulan and Baroring Rivers in the municipality of Sta. Cruz.
Ronquillo said that during its operation, its sister firm, the Davao Light and Power Co. (DLPC), will be able to save R4.8 billion for the next 12 years.

The energy generated from the power plant will be enough to supply about 294,000 households in Davao City, Panabo City, and municipalities of Carmen, Dujali, and Sto. Tomas of Davao del Norte, he said.

Ronquillo said the plant will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 95,000 tons of carbon dioxide.

At present, the company is constructing five drop intakes, more than 16 kilometers of steel conveyance pipes to divert the water from the rivers to the plant.

Since work on the project started in September 2007, the power company has brought in other projects that benefit host communities in Sta. Cruz, including more than 44 kilometers of roads and road improvements worth about R250 million.

It has also employed more than 1,000 locals for the pre-operation stage and committed to give 55 of them a training to oversee the plant’s operations once the operation starts. Local residents, mostly indigenous peoples of the Bagobo and Tagabawa tribes, are hired to work in the plant.

Also, the company set up a watershed management and reforestation program for 1,000 hectares of land within the Mt. Apo Natural Park and had it planted with trees.

Rural electrification, potable water supply, scholarship, and medical mission are also part of the corporate social commitments made by the company for the community.

Sta. Cruz Mayor Joel Ray Lopez said the project is “a leap of progress” in the municipality with an estimated R700-million contribution to be poured in by the power project into the community.

Lopez said the project is expected to provide R20 million in annual tax revenues once it becomes operational. Of that amount, 35 percent will go to the municipal government, 20 percent to the barangays, and the rest to the provincial government.

^^ so the measurement is reliable.... this could have something to do with the tropical depression currently being experienced in the central and northern part of the country...that explains perhaps the "cold front" ... so goys.... it's time to go to sasa (in your "winter" attire ) woof!

sa totoo lang walang dabawenyo( either poltician or private) using influence to have his way getting around Davao City, even Nograles was reprimanded when caught smoking inside a hotel. Tama dapat ang DCplina di lang mga Dabawenyos pati mga taga labas.

i just want to share my experience. kanina, on my way to davao, our bus stopped near union galvasteel sa ilang for task force inspection. i was irritated to a task force soldier kasi he was smoking while on duty. sa daan pa talga. bababa sana ako to tell him that but i was scared to kasi nga "armed" and it would be very "effort" kung bababa pa ako sa bus.

Only in Davao
Saturday, September 26, 2009

By Stella A. Estremera
Goin' Places

ONLY in Davao can you get your fill of fruits and yet still have a full pocket to feast and drink with and a whole bank account to retire on.

That's exaggerating, of course, but a Dabawenyo will know what I mean.

For updates from around the country, follow Sun.Star on Twitter

And so we knew we were in Davao when while eating crispy tenga, mini pork barbecues, chicken barbecue, crispy pork tenga, and chugging down ice cold beer, the waiter comes over to bring over a plate of rambutan complete with black ants running hither-thither.

"Saan 'to galing (Where did this come from, but intended to mean, ‘Who sent this over?’" we asked, meaning, who gave it to us. It's the same question you would ask if the waiter delivers a round of beer and you haven't even consumed your round. Except that... this was rambutan, obviously fresh from the tree complete with the black ants.

But because we were in Davao, the waiter replied, "Sa farm po."
"Uy, libre?" we again asked.

"Opo."

Yeah, we were indeed in Davao.

The clincher was when we teased the waiter that the rambutan he gave wouldn't be enough for us.

"Pwede pa po humingi uli (You can ask for more)," he said.

Ohh.... and so... we asked for more.

But of course such experience will only be reserved for those times when there is bumper harvest of fruits and just about everyone who has a farm would just love to get rid of their harvest (and the ants) as fast as they can. In the same way that every corner and sidewalk these days seem to be filled with mountains of durian.

Still... that can only happen in Davao, and so we were darn proud. Anyway, that night was just one of those when friends crave for the taste of barbecue, and so we opted to have them at this newly-opened Bak-Bak Resto Bar on that access road from Landco Building going out to F. Torres Street.

Bak-bak has indeed gone a long way from its small space in that row of barbecue stalls frequented by menfolk along F. Torres Street before Metro Lifestyle demolished those structures and became the huge building that it is now.

It's definitely bigger now, and more spacious too, with a wide lawn for the smoking crowd of beer drinkers. There's still a Bak-bak at K1 Compound along F. Torres Street, but this branch seemed to be peopled with the more tame, mature crowd (hopefully it will remain that way).

The beer is still ice cold, although I missed the iced beer. They must have run out or maybe I should've specified that I wanted the iced ones.

Anyway, it all started with Bak-bak, when Davao was first introduced and became hooked on iced and not just ice cold beer. It started a trend and a demand. Now beer isn't the best if you don't serve it iced.
Welcome to Davao...

And just in case you're wondering about those big bikes... It seems like the younger bike enthusiasts hereabouts hang out here, and so Amy and Deng insisted that their photos be taken with the bikes. Deng specifically picked a Ducati. Hmmm

Duterte wants to upgrade equipment of Central 911
Written by: Dalumpines , Jose G.
Monday, 28 September 2009

MAYOR Rodrigo Duterte expressed the need to upgrade the rescue equipment of the Emergency Response Central 911 before his term ends in order to effectively respond to calamities.
He made the statement following the heaviest flood that hit Metro Manila, Northern and Central Luzon since 1967 after the onslaught of Typhoon Ondoy over the weekend.
Speaking in the public affairs program “Gikan sa Masa Para sa Masa,” Duterte said the city has to invest in the equipment of the Central 911 since many of its hardwares are already dilapidated.
“We will purchase rescue equipment for floods, plenty of them like rubber boats, so that we can respond appropriately if a flood with magnitude proportion hits the city,” he said, adding the purchase must be done by December.

Although the drainage system will help mitigate the effects of floods, he said the city could not totally escape from the destruction caused by sudden changes in weather, which can be attributed to the global warming and the wanton disregard of the people to the environment.
He said the people must learn to adapt to the onslaught natural disasters due to climate change and environmental degradation that affect future generations.
“Because we destroyed the environment and it is not reparable even on the next fifty years Davao City has to prepare,” Duterte pointed out.
The official also scrapped earlier plan to buy cattle for the anniversary celebration of his public affairs program employees and instead use the money to buy foodstuff for the flood victims. “It is no longer time for celebration. Whatever money we can get, we’ll send it to help our brothers in Luzon,” Duterte said.

DAVAO City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte's Facebook account is awash with comments on the traffic violation he committed, which resulted in a traffic citation and the confiscation of his driver's license.

In his Facebook account, Duterte said he forgot to wear helmet on the evening of September 24 when he went around the city on his big bike.

"Nakalimot lang ko'g helmet atong tungura. Good Afternoon sa tanan (I simply forgot to wear a helmet. Good afternoon, everyone)," Duterte posted on his Facebook last September 26.

On September 14, Mayor Duterte posted a gruesome video of a motorist whose body was cut in half after being run over by a dump truck. In the said post, Duterte wrote, "Helmet lagi, gara-gara man pud sa dalan. maayong gabii."

Two days earlier, a different video of a vehicular accident involving motorcycle was also posted in Duterte's Facebook where he again reminded the public to "please wear your helmet."

Duterte’s chief aide, Lawrence "Bong" Go, confirmed to Sun.Star Davao that the Facebook account is that of the mayor.

In his television program "Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa" Sunday, Duterte explained that his traffic infraction was not deliberate.

"Ani man gud na, mikaon ko ug durian. Earlier that day, gipaayo nako ang motor kay nasira ang usa ka signal light. Later gitawagan ko sa shop na dili sila magpasalig na ibilin sa ilang shop ang motor, mao na ako na lang gikuha. Tapos pag-agi nako sa Sandawa, nadakpan ko. Wala koy excuse ana (I went out to eat durian that night. But earlier that day, I had my motorcycle's signal light fixed. The shop called saying they don't feel comfortable keeping my motorcycle in their shop overnight and can I just get it, so I did. But when I passed by Sandawa, I was apprehended. I didn't have any excuse)," Duterte narrated.

The mayor also scoffed at those saying it was scripted for some purpose. "Dili ko kinahanglan magdrama. Naa gud ko helmet pero magkatol-katol akong ulo. Kay last nako gamit naay mamang akong helmet mao na hastang pulaha sa akong ulo (I don't need to follow a script. I have a helmet, but the last time I used it, it had some insect which made my whole head itch)," he said.

The mayor admitted though that wearing helmet is a must for motorcycle riders.

"Kay sa 10 ka nadisgrasya sa motor, nine ana mabuhi kung naa lang helmet. Ako sige ko'g tambag pero musipyat man ko, dakpan pa gyud. Wala tay mahimo (It's a fact that in 10 motorcycle accidents, nine survive because the riders wore helmets. Although I admit, I always tell people to wear helmets and yet I forgot to, and so I was caught. We can't do anything about that)," Duterte said smiling.

Duterte will have to get his license back from the Land Transportation Office (LTO) but only after undergoing a seminar. He will also have to pay a little over P1,700 for his violation. (BOT)
