Fruit plantations and orchid farms, mantle volcano-fed hills and valleys. Virgin forests nurture rare wildlife. Coral islands lie on mirror flat water. And the country's highest peak, Mt. Apo, magnificently lords over the hinterland. Just as enchanting is its brilliant tapestry of harmony, woven from the diverse cultural threads of its people. In Davao, the contemporary fuses with the traditional as migrant settlers from all over the country peacefully co-exist with a sizeable expatriate community and numerous ethnic tribes who continue to live as they did centuries ago. Davao is home to the majestic Philippine Eagle, the country's national bird and considered the largest eagle in the world. It also boasts of the most priced Philippine orchid species like the Vanda sanderiana and some of the most exotic fruits like Durian and Mangosteen. Davao is an anchor tourist destination, a natural haven for both sedate and daring pursuits. It is the jump-off point to satellite destinations on the island of Mindanao. Sub Title Island Garden City of Samal: The Island Garden City of Samal is a group of islands in the Davao Gulf. The largest, also called Samal, has a number of excellent resorts, including one that was once a pearl farm. There are also many fine beaches, with good opportunities for snorkeling and scuba diving. Maragusan With its cool mountain weather, Maragusan in the province of Compostela Valley is Davao's traditional summer capital. The ethnic Mansaka community lives in the coffee-growing valley amidst waterfalls and cold springs. Kidapawan The provincial capital of North Cotabato, Kidapawan City is two hours by bus from Davao City. It is the main gateway to the ascent to Mt. Apo and hosts the 10-day Kalibongan Festival, a showcase of old ethnic rituals, songs, dances, and sports of the Manobo and other Mindanao tribes. Davao Oriental The province of Davao Oriental has at least 40 tourist spots. The town of San Isidro is home to Tinagong Dagat (or Hidden Sea), a mysterious lake; the highest waterfall in the country, the 338-meter high Aliwagwag Falls, is found in Cateel; in the old town of Caraga is a moss-covered 17th-century church. General Santos City GenSan is the tuna capital of the Philippines, where over 2,400 species of marine can be found, including the yellow-fin tuna, skipjack, and mackerel. GenSan can be reached by a 3-hour bus ride from Davao City. click here to search for your favorite destinations in the the Philippines: Philippine Travel Destinations (http://www.philippinetourism.us/destination/index.htm) dinabaw September 28th, 2009, 02:10 PM Davao.... vibrant.... http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/4163/2864725208826a1b2e37.jpg serene... http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/3773/davao030752.jpg Davao City in the background davaob4now September 28th, 2009, 02:16 PM ^^ very nice @dinabaw :okay: truly Zipline Capital of the Philippine gyud and Davao... diko alam ganyan na pala kadami ang ziplines sa davao... plus the upcoming Deca, which is a wakeboard park...(if madayon)...:) henji September 28th, 2009, 02:18 PM Were blessed for Davao to be safe from Ondoys wrath.... while sad for Luzon folks.. henji September 28th, 2009, 02:20 PM closing Time...... go go Thread 104 dinabaw September 28th, 2009, 02:22 PM ^^ very nice @dinabaw :okay: truly Zipline Capital of the Philippine gyud and Davao... diko alam ganyan na pala kadami ang ziplines sa davao... plus the upcoming Deca, which is a wakeboard park...(if madayon)...:) at bat di matuloy ang biggest wakeboard sa southeast asia? because of just 1 person who opposed of it? distorted ata :D http://deco-01.slide.com/r/1/0/dl/BE0Qvdi10T9VXeVCOUVwmvU1eGqdi0A4/item http://deco-01.slide.com/r/1/0/dl/a4g-w7Qk5D-GvxbztjacODzw1K0cB3_i/item http://deco-00.slide.com/r/1/0/dl/fYttHFHk5D-IHXLTPT7e3qcGyUl0tHOc/item http://deco-01.slide.com/r/1/0/dl/GpBDC76u1j_9q0XgJejrcGDmU2WSERBA/item http://www.slide.com/r/MA_sbI9hrT9eWdv7NXWg5GyLu9cAX0NU henji September 28th, 2009, 02:30 PM humanon na lang ta na Deca Wake Board Park uy... I wanted to try this one.. very soon! oradude23 September 28th, 2009, 08:52 PM Corporate News Insular Oil planning to expand P400-million depot in Davao INSULAR OIL Corp. plans spend up to P300 million to increase the capacity its petroleum storage and blending facility in Mindanao — already the largest in southern Philippines — by 20 million liters more. Insular Oil Corp. is an affiliate of oil retailer Flying V, which is also headed by Ramon F. Villavicencio. In a telephone interview, Insular Oil chief Ramon F. Villavicencio, said the company has yet to set the date of the construction of additional facilities and is still studying how to finance the expansion. "Maybe [with everything included], not just the tanks, we need an additional P300 million. The initial investment for the project was financed by internal cash of investors ... Now we are studying options for [financing]," he said. Last year, the Board of Investments gave incentives for the depot project, which serves Southern Mindanao and is located in a 45,305-square-meter lot in Davao City. Oil firms have been setting up more oil depots in that region due to continued industrialization. Mr. Villavicencio said the P400-million facility, which has a 30 million liter capacity, is 95% complete and has been operating for three months. The depot is the only one in the Visayas and Mindanao that has a petroleum receiving facility that can accommodate up to 30,000-ton vessels, he said. On Sept. 14, the Securities and Exchange Commission approved the plan of the company to hike its capitals five times to P250 million to pay off advances from shareholders and finance expansion. The new shares were all bought and paid for by 12 shareholders, with ICVI Consultancy Services and CNV Erectors, Inc. as the biggest subscribers, taking P52.59 million and P45.70 million worth of shares, respectively. "When Insular Oil was incorporated and had the plant built, the shareholders advanced P400 million ... We decided that part of what we advanced — P200 million — would become capitalization of the firm," Mr. Villavicencio said, adding the firm still owes P150 million to its shareholders. Insular Oil is an affiliate of oil retailer Flying V, which is also headed by Mr. Villavicencio. — Don Gil K. While most value added service requires the payment of P2.50 per transaction, the SDGFI Infoboard only requires a payment of P1.00, hence it is very affordable for environment advocates. “If you evidence of pollution in the Davao Gulf, like for example an oil spill, then you may immediately inform the Coast Guard by just texting,” Avila said. It is fairly easy to be part of the Infoboard. Simply register for free, subscribe to Save Davao Gulf announcements, and you’re on. The P1.00 per message text applies to all Smart and Talk and Text subscribers. Avila, who is also chairperson of the Davao Gulf management council, said they are encouraging Dabawenyos to take part in protecting Davao Gulf by participating in various activities slated during the observance of Davao Gulf Week. These activities are aimed at lessening the impact of climate change along the coastal communities in the city, he said. “Those who are living in the coastal areas do not even know what they should do when the sea level rises, so it is important that they join the climate change summit,” he said. Part of the campaign to protect Davao Gulf includes the preparation of Environmental Sensitivity Index Maps. “These include vulnerable areas where there are coastal communities that depend on the body of water for livelihood,” he said. Vulnerable areas are defined as areas where there are large amounts of coral reefs, mangroves and sea grasses. Avila noted the increasing number of volunteers usually gathered by the city when there are coastal cleanup activities. “This has made the city the center of the world’s coastal cleanup,” he added. According to Araceli Ayuste, president of the Davao Region Tourism Council and proprietor of the Punta del Sol resort in Samal, said that from 20 resorts in Samal Island in 2007, there are at least 40 resorts in 2009, with more being developed. Ayuste said that tourism in Davao is not affected by the global financial crisis judging by the tourism activities in the region. She said that even if you go to the hotels in Davao City, they are almost always fully-booked as conventions and lakbay-arals are being held here. She added that the growth in tourism activities has encouraged many resort owners in Samal to become active asmemebsr of the Samal Island Davao Resort Owners Association or SIDROA. In the past, resort owners were hesitant to join, but with the upsurge in tourism, many are now joining because it benefits their businesses. The group has about 40 member-resorts from the Triple A to the uncategorized. Of the number, about 25 resort-members are active in Sidroa. Together they are pushing for the region to position and promote itself, particularly as an island destination. One tourism activity Ayuste is pushing together with technical diver Carlos Munda is diving. Currently, Samal has three resorts with diving facilities -- Pearl Farm, Paradise and Ayuste’s Punta del Sol. Munda, the only certified technical diver in Mindanao, said what is hindering the growth of the diving business here is the lack of diving tourists. About 95% of the divers are locals from Davao City while 5% are tourists. Unlike in Anilao and Puerto Galera, where 90% of the divers are tourists spending about P6,000 to P10,000 each per weekend. He said that aside from boat rentals, tanks, food and accommodations, these tourists employ guides that generate local employment unlike local divers who are familiar with the place and spend lesser than tourists. According to Ayuste, diving tourists would spend about P3, 000 per weekend in Davao, while local divers spend about P2, 000. Punta del Sol averages about 50 divers during weekends. She says Samal has around 17 dive sites. Munda also points out that Igacos has no dive resort yet. These are resorts that cater only to divers and wouldn’t delve into other amenities. These resorts he says are not capital intensive and hence fit for Igacos’ community-based tourism enterprises. Diving, he said is not about corals as divers also want to find big fishes and sea “critters” in different underwater environments. The current diving mania today Munda says is muck diving, which is diving done in muddy or mucky waters. Muck dive sites harbor exotic and unusual organisms that live in the sediment and which make for great underwater photography subjects. Mallo DAVAO City still needs more than 1,700 hotel rooms in order to be able to consider bidding for hosting major national events, like the Ad Congress. Ad Congress, which gathers more than 5,000 participants from all over the country, is set in Baguio City in November. In an interview with Sun.Star Davao, City Tourism Office chief Rizal Giovanni Aportadera said more hotel rooms should be opened in the city to be considered as a site for major national events, which will promote the city as a premier tourism destination both domestically and internationally. "At present what we have is almost 3,000 rooms," Aportadera said, adding that major conventions would require a minimum of at least 4,000 rooms readily available, and of course, a convention center big enough to accommodate at least twice the number of rooms required. However, except for Pinnacle Place, which is set to open by end of the year or early 2010, no other major hotel is being constructed at the moment. Once opened, Pinnacle Place will add another 200 suites to the number of hotel rooms in Davao City. Department of Tourism (DOT)-Southern Mindanao Director Sonia Garcia also said the city still lacks hotel rooms to accommodate visitors who are expected to come with the opening of more air routes from the city. "As much as we want chartered operations to come in, we can't accommodate the visitors because we don't have enough rooms, that's a fact," Sonia Garcia said. Garcia said the city does not even have the required number of tourist buses, as these chartered operations require ferrying around 200 guests to a hotel. "There's something to be done especially that the trend now is the conduct of regional convention to cut down on cost among major companies," Garcia said. developers, ayan, may opportunity pa hehe pasok na po kayo :D dinabaw September 29th, 2009, 07:09 AM ^^ counted kaya ang mga rooms sa IGACOS diyan? last ATF they included rooms sa IGACOS even as far as Tagum, kung matatapos yung Samal Casino Resort madadagdagan pa. Yam in ‘Echo’ premiere Davaoeño director William “Yam” Laranas will attend the hometown premiere of his Hollywood-made horror flick, The Echo, tonight, 8 pm at Gaisano Mall of Davao Cinema 1. “I hope we can invite the whole Davao City!” the proud Davaoeño said. Yam is the first Davaoeño to make a Hollywood-produced film with The Echo. The Echo, also the first Hollywood film based on a Filipino film, is a remake of Yam’s hit ‘Sigaw’ which starred Richard Gutierrez and Angel Locsin. The Echo is produced by Roy Lee, the man behind the Hollywood remakes of hit Asian horror films like The Ring, The Grudge, and The Eye. In the updated version of The Echo, Jess Bradford (Swimfan, Flags of Our fathers) assumes Gutierrez’s role, a man who has been disturbed by unusual noise coming from a neighboring apartment. When the ex-con tries to intervene in a domestic problem involving a police officer and his wife, a mysterious curse entraps him. While the gist of the story remained intact, several twists were added to the Hollywood version. Also, Yam said there are more scare factors in the latest version. The Echo’s premiere in Manila held last week was warmly attended. “Feedback was overwhelming. The theatre was packed and loud - screaming and shouting,” Yam said. He hopes such “screaming and shouting” will be repeated in Davao. Laranas was born and grew up in the cities of Tagum and Davao, both in Davao region. He finished grade school at Rizal Memorial Colleges, secondary at Davao City National High School and took up Medical Technology at Immaculate Conception Colleges before moving to Manila to study filmmaking at Mowelfund. He started making TV commercials and doing cinematography works for independent-produced films, before he was tapped to do the camera work for Viva Films. In 2001, he launched Rica Peralejo in his directorial debut ‘Balahibong Pusa’. It was also his first full-length movie that he wrote. The movie, which also starred Joyce Jimenez, was a blockbuster hit that Viva gave him more projects such as ‘Radyo’ (starring Rufa Mae Quinto-Epi Quizon), ‘Ikaw Lamang Hanggang Ngayon’ (Richard Gomez and Regine Velasquez) and ‘Hibla’ (also with Rica and Maui Taylor). In 2004, he was tapped by Regal Films to direct ‘Sigaw’ which he also wrote. Sigaw did not only become a hit in the Philippines, but it also made waves in the international market catching the attention of producer Roy Lee who immediately contacted him to direct a remake. Yam is also the first Filipino to direct a documentary for National Geographic Channel with ‘Asia’s Titanic’ which tackles about the sinking of Doña Pas and its aftermath. The premiere of The Echo is presented by Viva Films, Gaisano Mall of Davao, Davao City National High School Alumni, Davao City High School Batch 85, White Flower, San Miguel Corporation, Tatuts, Bro du Cielo, RGMA, Una Ka Bai, Councilor Pete Laviña, Councilor Diosdado Mahipus, Councilor Mabel Acosta, Southspot, Cineaste, Alchemy of Vision and Light, Mindanao Film Foundation, Dafydd Aseoche, and The Mindanao Daily Mirror. Duterte to utilize the city's calamity funds to extend assistance to flood victims in Metro Manila. The city's lawmakers approved Monday the city's donation, amounting to P10 million, which will be channeled through the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC). Sun.Star accepts donations for victims of Typhoon Ondoy In addition, Duterte also donated his one-month salary and asked members of the City Council to do the same. "I you do not do that, don't talk to me anymore," he told the City Councilors. The P10-million donation will be in cash and will be handed over by Davao City Police Office (DCPO) director Ramon Apolinario to PNRC central office in Manila. "The money is already available...It's the best the Dabawenyos could do," Duterte said. On Sunday, Duterte said that instead of spending for his television show's anniversary, he will donate the money to the flood victims. "We will donate the money for the celebration of Gikan sa Masa to the flood victims. Dili ko ganahan mag-party, ihatag na lang nato ang kwarta sa Luzon (I'm not in the mood to party, just give that amount to Luzon)," he said. http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/city-donate-p10m-ondoy-victims Rajah_Soliman September 29th, 2009, 12:19 PM netfind--- where is this located? seems like we're talking of a photoshopped picture here. http://images.akoniuy.multiply.com/image/1/photos/18/1200x1200/74/3bldgqm4.jpg?et=azgaciedFQ4ckrBNhL8Q4g&nmid=82457475 KING CITY September 29th, 2009, 12:32 PM ^^ Bajada, sa u/c Abreeza banda  http://static.flickr.com/2178/2343385422_eeb91908f3.jpg Noize_320 September 29th, 2009, 12:59 PM netfind--- where is this located? seems like we're talking of a photoshopped picture here. http://images.akoniuy.multiply.com/image/1/photos/18/1200x1200/74/3bldgqm4.jpg?et=azgaciedFQ4ckrBNhL8Q4g&nmid=82457475 2 years from now  KING CITY September 29th, 2009, 01:43 PM http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3144/3066068472_548e318d6b_b.jpg GAP Farm http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3291/3066068230_a7e21bbb6e_b.jpg Chinese Temple, Davao City http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3210/3031263189_288d56c225_b.jpg Japanese Tunnel By: Burgersmac adeeh September 29th, 2009, 02:02 PM ^^ So adto-an nimo ni cya adeeh?:banana: I'll try inig uli nako sa Davao for Xmas vacay. :D dinabaw September 29th, 2009, 02:22 PM http://yfrog.com/1838731275603beb2ebfe0bj http://img44.imageshack.us/img44/3167/38731275603beb2ebfe0b.jpg http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/377/3876613390a34665093db.jpg http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/4574/3886181836e0e6427d08b.jpg dinabaw September 29th, 2009, 02:31 PM http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/9564/38259073416c43519e35.jpg http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/6023/11206106680copyx2xofdav.jpg Pearl Farm http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/9588/davao.jpg (http://img134.imageshack.us/i/davao.jpg/) Coral Garden KING CITY September 29th, 2009, 02:32 PM ^^ wow parang ang lapit lang ng Davao City sa Playa Azalea  ........... http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2508/3706075847_ea985bc589.jpg Giant Water Slide, Samal,Davao http://www.flickr.com/photos/crazyacey/3706075847/ dinabaw September 29th, 2009, 02:46 PM Davao City 101: A Cultural Guide 16 Aug http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/1187/davaopier.jpg (http://img23.imageshack.us/i/davaopier.jpg/) Davao PierWorking cross-culturally raises unique hurdles. Davao City: A Region with Rich Traditions The people of the Philippines have a rich history that is full of tradition. Near Davao City, there are a number of different indigenous tribes that come from the surrounding areas. The people primarily come from the Obo aboriginal tribe. Davao City is also heavily influenced by Spanish culture, as a result of expeditions to the Philippines by Spaniards. Evidence of Spanish influence is found in the villages (also called barrios) and local fiestas. Japanese culture has also influenced the people of the Philippines and especially Davao City, as a result of immigrant plantation workers. Davao City was also occupied by the Japanese after a bombing in 1941. Davao City is the one of the largest urban centers in the Philippines. The most prevalent industries in the city include agriculture, industrial and service. Because of its airport, seaport, bridges and other infrastructure, Davao City is accessible and navigable. A recent influx of expatriates and immigrants from places like Japan, Malaysia and the United States has generated a great deal of growth and revenue in Davao City. It has also encouraged the development of business process outsourcing relationships. Hopefully, we can be exempted from the election ban," Samal City administrator Cleto B. Gales Jr. said in an interview. The island, which used to have controlled dumping in a two-hectare property that has since been abandoned, sought assistance from the USAID-funded EcoGov2 program for the design of the sanitary landfill. full story http://www.bworldonline.com/BW092909/content.php?id=056 oradude23 September 29th, 2009, 09:39 PM Domestic trade bounces city ports DOMESTIC cargoes traded at the various port facilities in Davao Gulf rose in the face of crashing foreign trade that began in the closing months last year. Latest figures reveal that bananas that were hard hit when the financial fallouts happened have been briskly shipped to national capital region driving up the total domestic trade by 23 percent. Apparently, other banana growers who sensed the waning and retreated demand of the commodity shifted its shipments to Manila to recover lost earnings from vanishing demands abroad. However, the influx of construction materials specifically that of iron/steel and cement products also jacked up the local trading given the full blast construction of new malls at Bajada and at Panacan to the extent that metal products emerged the number one discharged domestic commodity here these past months. These two factors would hopefully raise some more the domestic volumes this year and effectively buttressed the total cargo throughput of the port of Davao when the year ends. For the first six months this year, domestic shipments of bananas leaped by 275 percent when compared with the same period last year. On the other hand, exports of these plunged by 12 percent. These statistical variations are prevalent at present at Sasa Wharf. Yet despite the figures, bananas still is strongly ensconced as our top export. Big name banana companies that shipped its produce through their own port facilities do not seem affected though by the slowing market demands as private ports here are still “on level” with their export volumes with that of last year. Since bananas are generally handled in containers, this translated to an overall growth of seven percent thanks largely to the increment in domestic vans of 25 percent, which greatly propped up the zero growth in foreign vans handled. Container traffic has largely been the backbone of port development at Sasa Wharf given the established trend of containerized cargo handling. Consider this: When containers were first brought to Sasa in 1978 as alternative type of cargo handling and a year after Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) administration of the port, there were 16,594 units of various container sizes handled or, in port parlance, 13,288 TEUs or twenty equivalent units. These grew to 27,700 units or 22,225 TEUs two years later in 1980. Today, port of Davao has primed itself as among the top ports in the Philippines and with eight regular domestic shipping and eight foreign lines here not counting the tramping vessels, container traffic is at its all-time high of 349,023 TEUs as of December 2008. By June this year, the figure stood at 167,406 TEUs. This is further expected to grow as foreign trade would perk up as have been observed every last quarter of the year owing to the holiday season. This presumption is further strengthened with the most recent foray of a new ship player opening portage services between the Philippines and Papua New Guinea. This new route followed the recently established linkage between Koror in Palau and this city pioneered by Marianas Lines. CB Ships Services Corporation, while deploying smaller container vessels would not only open trade between Davao and ports of Lae and Madang in Papua New Guinea but would hope to position Sasa Wharf as a transshipment point for China, Japan, Australia, Singapore, the Mediterranean and Europe in consideration of the fact that port tariff is lesser here than in Singapore where most cargoes are relayed from Asia to the world. With an already established home office in Metro Manila and branches at Cagayan de Oro and Lae, Papua New Guinea, the opening of its satellite office here would once again "open up Davao to the world" in the footsteps of the once-ballyhooed Gearbulk experience where Sasa Wharf became the transshipment point or relay centre of cargoes from Asean to Europe and the Americas in early 80's. This trade, reliant on wood products from Philippine neighbors, would cease when most of these countries imposed bans and restrictions regarding the harvest of its forest resources. Java Sea, the flagship vessel of CBS Ships, would make its turn-around call at Sasa from PNG and would have a twice a month run here. oradude23 September 29th, 2009, 11:25 PM New hotel opens in Chinatown A NEW hotel in the Chinatown district of Davao City has opened its doors to the public on Friday, offering 33 new suites. Over the weekend, City Tourism Office chief Rizal Giovanni Aportadera announced the city still lacks 1,700 rooms in order for it to bid in major events like the Ad Congress. Dubbed as the Hari Royale Suites, the six-storey structure on Sta. Ana Avenue houses a restaurant on the ground floor, a spa on the second floor, and 33 suites on the third to the sixth floors. Owned by businessman Fred Melivo, the new hotel promises to offer affordable accommodations. "I have been a business traveler myself, so I know how it is to be one," Melivo told Sun.Star Davao. At present, Davao City has only about 3,000 rooms, while major conventions would require a minimum of at least 4,000 rooms readily available, and of course, a convention center big enough to accommodate at least twice the number of rooms required. Another investment in the hotel industry is the Pinnacle Place, which is set to open by end of the year or early 2010. Once opened, Pinnacle Place will add another 200 suites to the number of hotel rooms in Davao City. The plan is to build both the landfill and the eco-park amid lush trees and a picturesque landscape. "We can start this next year. Hopefully, we can be exempted from the election ban," Samal City administrator Cleto B. Gales Jr. said in an interview. The island, which used to have controlled dumping in a two-hectare property that has since been abandoned, sought assistance from the USAID-funded EcoGov2 program for the design of the sanitary landfill. full story http://www.bworldonline.com/BW092909/content.php?id=056 I really don't get it. a park adjacent to a landfill? dinabaw September 30th, 2009, 02:57 AM Duterte plans to refurbish city's emergency equipment Tuesday, September 29, 2009 AWARE of global warming and the "mechanics of devastation in our ecology," Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said he plans to refurbish the city's emergency equipment. "Okay lang na nga mugasto ta para ana (It's all right even if we have to spend for those). I know that nothing lasts forever, madaot gyud na (everything will deteriorate). We have to prepare to live with the problem because we would have to face it one of these days," Duterte said. However, he still has to come up with a concrete list of the equipment the city will need. Duterte said the city has been doing its best to control its waste management, which has caused drainage problems. "We have been doing our part here. Davao City is one of the two in Mindanao who has a sanitary landfill to dispose its waste. Kita ra. Lisod gyud kaayo pugson ang tao nga magbag-o sa ingon-ana (It's difficult to make people change their ways)," Duterte said. But garbage is but an inconvenience, not the problem. Its climate change, that is. "Ang baha karon dili na madala ug drainage. Sa ka daghan sa basura sa dili na na makaya higupon sa drainage. Karon kay ni bagyo didto sa Manila, ang six months worth sa ulan nibundak ug six hours lang, wala gyud nila natabang (The floods these days can no longer be solved by just drainage. With the bulk of garbage we have, drainage systems can no longer drain out water. Place this in a situation where six months' worth of rain is poured in six hours, you cannot do anything)," Duterte said. The mayor also laments how the entire country is affected by climate change even though the country's contribution to climate change "is less than minimal." "When the blaming game starts, ang makalagot ana dili man ang Pilipinas ang naga-contribute anang global warming, ang kana mang America. Sila may dagko kaayo mga plantasyon. Wala man gani sila nipirma sa Kyoto protocol nga nag-agree ang mga nasod nga gamyan ang ilang polusyon (what's infuriating is that the Philippines' contribution to global warming is but minimal, the biggest contributor is America. They did not even sign the Kyoto Protocol where countries agreed to lower their carbon emissions). America never signed," Duterte said. The council on Monday authorized Duterte to use P10 million of the city's calamity fund to extend assistance to the flood victims of Typhoon Ondoy. In their session, it was said that the city still has P123,585,462 left as calamity fund. The cash donation was hand carried by Davao City Police Office director Ramon Apolinario to the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) central office in Manila. In Monday's council session, several councilors said their take on the matter. Councilor Nilo Abellera gave a privilege speech, saying he is for the allotment of fund to equip the city against possible climate change related emergencies. Commenting on Abellera's speech, Councilor Danilo Dayanghirang said he has called several councilors in Mindanao on the actions the city did. Cagayan de Oro has expressed they will do the same. Dayanghirang said the city is "most likely the first in Mindanao who reponded to the flood" tragedy in Luzon. (JCZ) Sun-Star (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/duterte-plans-refurbish-citys-emergency-equipment) dinabaw September 30th, 2009, 03:05 AM Domestic trade bounces at Port of Davao Domestic cargoes traded at the various port facilities in Davao Gulf rose in the face of crashing foreign trade that began in the closing months last year. Latest figures reveal that bananas which were hard hit when the financial fallouts happened have been briskly shipped to national capital region driving up the total domestic trade by 23%. Apparently, other banana growers who sensed the waning and retreated demand of the commodity shifted its shipments to Manila to recover lost earnings from vanishing demands abroad. However, the influx of construction materials specifically that of iron/steel and cement products also jacked up the local trading given the full blast construction of new malls at Bajada and at Panacan to the extent that metal products emerged the No. 1 discharged domestic commodity here these past months. These two factors would hopefully raise some more the domestic volumes this year and effectively buttressed the total cargo throughput of the port of Davao when the year ends. For the first six months this year, domestic shipments of bananas leaped by 275% when compared with the same period last year. On the other hand, exports of these plunged by 12%. These statistical variations are prevalent at present at Sasa Wharf. Yet despite the figures, bananas still is strongly ensconced as our top export. Big name banana companies that shipped its produce through their own port facilities do not seem affected ‘though by the slowing market demands as private ports here are still “on level” with their export volumes with that of last year. Since bananas are generally handled in containers, this translated to an overall growth of 7% thanks largely to the increment in domestic vans of 25% which greatly propped up the zero growth in foreign vans handled. Container traffic has largely been the backbone of port development at Sasa Wharf given the established trend of containerized cargo handling. Consider this: When containers were first brought to Sasa in 1978 as alternative type of cargo handling and a year after PPA administration of the port, there were 16,594 units of various container sizes handled or, in port parlance, 13,288 TEUs or twenty equivalent units. Monday, 21 September 2009 02:54 Open access” sounds like open source system, a term associated with software use. However, these two words could mean the world for power users in Mindanao, particularly in Davao which is among the main franchise areas of Aboitiz Power, formerly known as the Davao Light & Power Company. These two words simply mean competition in the power retail sector. When it becomes a reality, it will revolutionize the sector and will introduce a lot of changes in the power industry. “Open access will allow us to service customers outside our franchise area; however it will also be disadvantageous for us because other power companies will also be allowed to service those in our franchise area,” Aboitiz Power president and CEO Erramon Aboitiz said. The approval of the open access policy, he said, will force Aboitiz Power to be more competitive and to look for more ways to serve its consumers so they remain loyal to the company. What is open access? Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and distributors like the Aboitiz Power have petitioned the Energy Regulatory Commission to allow interim open access in Luzon and the Visayas, in view of the slow progress in the government’s privatization of its power plants under the EPIRA or the Electric Power Industry Reform Act or RA 9136 which was approved in 2001. Aboitiz said open access will soon be a reality in Luzon since the privatization of nearly 70% of the assets of the National Power Corporation is now in progress as provided for by the law. “Open access in Davao City and in Mindanao may take longer, but it is a reality and a challenge we are preparing for,” he said. At present, he added, Agus and Pulangi are exempt from privatization until 2012. The willingness of some players in the power industry to implement open access without the preconditions set in the EPIRA is shown by the petition submitted by these players to the ERC, requesting for interim open access. Even President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is pushing for the approval of interim open access in exchange of congressional amendment to the EPIRA law. It is believed that the amendment of the EPIRA law would lower power rates. The compromise was for the government to prioritize the renewable energy bill if the industry is able to come up with open access. RA 9513 otherwise known as the Renewable Energy Act of 2008 was thus signed into law by the President last year. With open access in place, large electric users or those with a minimum consumption of 750 kilowatt hours or more can already buy their electricity directly from the power generators. These consumers will just have to pay the concerned distribution and transmission companies for using their wires in the process of delivering power. EPIRA Law The EPIRA aims to push for the restructuring of the power sector and the privatizations of the National Power Corporation’s assets. Under the law, the transmission power of the NPC has been transferred from the NPC to the National Transmission Corporation or Transco. The same law aims for Transco’s privatization. Under the EPIRA, a total of 49 generation facilities, as well 26 IPP contracts producing more than 11,800 megawatts are supposed to be sold. Aboitiz said the “sale of at least 70% of these assets is the condition required before open access can be implemented.” Will open access lower power costs? Aboitiz said open access will result to more competitive power price and transparent pricing once it is implemented in Davao City. Critics however claim that the power industry monopolies will still exist and power rates will still be high. In contrast to this, the EPIRA was supposed to dismantle monopolies to encourage competition and pave the way for lower power costs. At least two thirds of power users are residential and other users, and there is a question as to how they can benefit from open access. For one, only 25% of power consumers, consisting of large electricity users, will benefit from open access. It is claimed that true competition will not be realized by selling 70% of Napocor’s assets because it can also land in the hands of companies that also distribute power. Open access and cleanergy Cleanergy is the latest buzz word from Aboitiz Power, as “it is AP’s brand of clean and renewable power.” Aboitiz said “it is an energy solution that will give power consumers an option to reduce their carbon footprint and attain a more sustainable lifestyle.” Aboitiz said that when open access is established, Aboitiz Power will make Cleanergy an option for consumers who want to be environmental protectors while consuming sustainable energy. Open access is still a new concept for most power consumers but it is an idea already looming in the horizon of Davao power consumers. It will soon be implemented in Luzon and in Aboitiz’ words, with most of NPC’s assets already being sold, open access is “irreversible.” Edge Davao (http://www.edgedavao.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1109:will-open-access-make-energy-in-davao-cleaner-and-cheaper&catid=34:the-economy&Itemid=68) Peng Hok September 30th, 2009, 03:54 AM Duterte plans to refurbish city's emergency equipment Tuesday, September 29, 2009 Davao City is one of the two in Mindanao who has a sanitary landfill to dispose its waste. Executive Order (EO) 22, which was signed by Duterte on September 22, implements the creation and constitution of the watershed management council (WMC), the barangay watershed management councils (BWMC), and the watershed multi-partite monitoring teams (WMMT) in the city. Sun.Star accepts donations for victims of Typhoon Ondoy The EO is grounded on the Watershed Code, which was enacted on January 23, 2007 and its accompanying implementing rules and regulations (IRR) approved on October 15, 2008. The EO allots P5 million as budget for the watershed councils. The fund comes from the mobilization fund set aside under Article 16 of the Watershed Code. Through the EO, the WMC is mandated to issue policies and guidelines and set the direction of collaboration in gathering, processing and evaluating information on watershed areas in the city and develop plans and strategies towards ensuring its health and sustainability. BMWC shall be organized in every barangay within designated watershed areas or having a portion of a watershed area within its boundary to assist the WMC in ensuring the effective, efficient and consistent implementation of the Watershed Code, the EO said. The WMMT shall be organized in every designated cluster of watershed areas to assist the WMC in ensuring full compliance by all to the provisions of the watershed code, it's IRR and other environmental laws, the EO said. The city mayor will chair the WMC with the city administrator as vice chair. Among the 20 members of the WMC is the chair of the committee on environment and natural resources, the chair of the committee on housing, rural, and urban planning, the City Environment and Natural Resources Officer, and the City Agriculture Officer. Barangay captains will chair the BWMC, while the vice-chair will be the barangay council's committee on environment and natural resources head. The WMMT will be chaired by a local government unit representative designated by the WMC. A representative of the Environmental Management Bureau-Department of Environment and Natural Resources (EMB-DENR), designated by the local EMB-DENR head will be WMMT's vice-chair. This is when the moon is believed to be in its fullest and roundest. This year, it falls on October 3, Saturday. In Chinese culture, the full moon is a symbol of peace and prosperity for the whole family. Its roundness symbolizes wholeness and togetherness. The number 8 is a symbol of wealth and prosperity. This year, the Davao City Chinatown Development Council is holding the very first Chinese Mid-Autumn Moon Festival. On the eve of the moon festival, October 2 (Friday) at 6 p.m. the festivities will begin simultaneously at the Unity and Friendship archways along Ramon Magsaysay Avenue and Peace Archway along Sta. Ana Avenue, which is all located within Davao City’s Chinatown. Starting on Friday, the Night Market will be opened to the public at the Unity Archway. Traditional festival activities will be held at the Peace Archway where a Lantern Lighting and Making contest, the city and barangay Mooncake Dice Game will be played and presented. The Food and Entertainment Fiesta along Chavez Street will also commence. On the night of the festival on Saturday, a Moon Gazing and a Musical Showdown will be held and participated by various Chinese schools in the city at the Peace Archway. The awarding for the winners will also be held on the same night. The festivities will continue on October 4, Sunday, with the Food and Entertainment Fiesta. (This is for Reference to our VISITOR from SSC DAVAO come the 30th Masskara Festival... thanks) Before i sort out the FINAL Names for the MASSKARA ID's... I would like to REITERATE some important KEEP regarding "OUR" purpose why we will be having ID's for MASSKARA... 1. This is to INITIATE camaraderie towards everyone in SSC be it from SSC Bcd, SSC Cebu, SSC Davao or SSC Iloilo... 2. This is in purpose that we from SSC should be recognized not just a local group but a NATIONAL Organization in purpose to PROMOTE our Beloved Country, the Philippines. 3. SSC Masskara ID is a SECURITY ID.. so we in our own little way should also HELP in addressing PEACE and ORDER in the ENTIRE Duration of the FESTIVAL -- and MIND YOU, it is a PRIVILEGE only chosen few can GET. The BENEFITS? INFINITE! 4. All SSC BCD wants when you have your MASSKARA ID is TIME to Mingle and Bond with the rest of the members. I know everyone will be busy that time, but as i said, everyone is busy that time so theres no reason for the others not to show their faces to the rest of the SSC Community. OH COME ON! 5. As part of the SSC Bacolod Tradition, anyone who wants to GET a MASSKARA ID is ENCOURAGED (or shall I say, MANDATED hahahaha) to have a GENERIC SSC Shirt Printed... remember, we are here to be distinguished TOURISM AMBASSADORS so we need to SHOW OFF! and lastly and the MOST IMPORTANT of them ALL... 6. If your only purpose is to GET AN ID for your personal selfish reasons, MIND YOU, I will not give you your ID... Unless of course if you give @thesugarfairy a LOUIS VUITTON Shades and Hermes Bag (hahahahaha) and for the Benefit of consideration... there will be as usual, SOME EXCEPTIONS... but it will be decided by the TEAM BACOLOD headed by MR. TOURISM himself, SUV111... so here are the FINAL LIST of those persons who can get their ID.. if you cant find your name below, IM SORRY, PM SUV111 or Me... hehehehehe SSC BACOLOD 1. Sugar Fairy 2. I am here for the Mindanao Culinary Festival, which was, again, a resounding success. I am also here for my “heritage” tour of Mindanao. The diversity of Davao cuisine is unbelievable. This is where I can grab a bite of the perfect “sugba,” walk around the corner to have my fill of durian and walk back to the hotel to dine at Lotus Court with its exquisite Xiamen offerings such as stir-fried misua noodles (I love the feel of the noodles in my mouth, a main dish on its own, with so much meat and shrimps) and braised squid with brown sauce (cooked to perfection; very tender). Cap that off with Green Tea Pancake – thick crepes brushed with green tea syrup sprinkled with sugar and nuts, and rolled with papaya. Sounds strange? On the contrary, a bite of the Green Tea Pancake is a perfumed, refreshing mouthful. I asked long-time friend, Art Boncato, the hotel’s executive assistant manager, about their Xiamen dishes. He said that according to Xiamen chefs Story Sun Lei and John Ye Zen Ting who were in town to train their counterparts: “It (Xiamen cuisine) is one of the eight most famous cuisines of China. It has its own character and it is famous for its seafood.” A dish that best describes the complexity of Xiamen cuisine is Wall-Jump Buddha, a traditional Xiamen dish prepared with over 30 ingredients: shark’s fin, sea cucumber, chicken breast, pig’s trotters, abalone, mushrooms and pigeon eggs are but a few. They are carefully selected and skillfully cut. “The cooking process is very strict. The ingredients and condiments are first put into a Shaoxing wine jar, its mouth sealed once the lid is put on. The jar is boiled and then stewed. The ingredients and condiments are then mixed to form a special flavor, each retaining part of its fragrance.” Aside from Lotus Court, Davao has the outstanding Ah Fat Chinese restaurant. Rajo Laurel claims Ah Fat is his favorite, raving in fact about the restaurant’s “pigik” (a kind of fish they steam and serve with its roe which they fry before incorporating it into the dish) and the “kepay” (shellfish steamed with garlic). He is so in love with Ah Fat that he even knows exactly on which day a type of seafood is delivered. Ah Fat is a must! (tel. 082-2255787/ 2262688). I have compiled some recipes of Davao’s most delicious offerings: Lotus Court’s Xiamen noodles and the “sugbanok” of BB Barbecue Atbp. Xiamen noodles 250 g “misua” noodles 10 g sliced shrimps and pork 5 g sliced black mushrooms 10 g “pechay,” carrots, leeks 2 tsp oyster sauce 1 tsp chicken powder 1 tsp white sugar 2 tsp mushroom soy sauce 1 tsp sesame oil Deep-fry “misua” noodles. After deep-frying, boil in hot water for 3 minutes. Heat a wok, add a bit of oil and add the rest of the ingredients, except soy sauce and sesame oil. Mix well. Add soy sauce and sesame oil. Mix and serve immediately. BB’s ‘sugbanok’ http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/6660/pic10010328020373.jpg (http://img198.imageshack.us/i/pic10010328020373.jpg/) I’d like to thank Gene Bangayan who unselfishly shared the recipe, the tips and how to make “sinamak,” the perfect dip for “sugbanok.” “Sugba” is Dabawenyo for “inihaw” or grill. “Sugbanok” is the acronym for “sinugbang manok.” Use free-range chicken or “manok Bisaya.” Do not use frozen chicken. Grill only over charcoal. Recipe: 1 whole native chicken, fresh and dressed Marinate for 30 minutes to 1hour in mixture of: 1 c cooking oil ½ c soy sauce 4 cloves garlic, crushed “Sugba” (or grill) on top of charcoal griller using leftover marinade for basting, and serve immediately. Recipe for “sinamak”: Cane vinegar or coconut vinegar (“sukang tuba”) Add ginger, shallots, garlic, black peppercorn, sugar and salt. Keep for a few days to one week before serving (BB Barbecue Atbp, tel. 082-2221929). Other discoveries Marco Polo’s Lazuli Spa is tagged as one of the best spas in the Philippines. In Davao, there are only two, the one at Pearl Farm and Lazuli. The hotel’s newly opened rooms at the cabana view deck and terrace are nice and comfortable (Marco Polo Hotel, tel. 082-2210888). I swear I can finish one whole Jic n’ Jacs Durian Cake. It is a light, soft and moist durian sponge, layered with rich durian butter icing. Owner Jennifer Tan is the Juda Liu of Davao. Sinfully addicting! Jennifer can find a way to get her durian cake to you (0918-9221709). If you like “lechon” and chili, try Spicy Lechon of Beko’s Biik. It is “lechon de leche,” stuffed with tons of chili. It is seasoned to perfection with a bite and kick that you will never forget. Great with “suka” or calamansi. This “lechon” is not for the faint-hearted (0922-8381600). Davao is truly where there is a bit of everything for everyone. Talagang wow ang Davao! Wow ang Mindanao! Majority Floor Leader Danilo Dayanghirang said the new policy will mandate all developers to issue a special power of attorney (SPA) to their representative who will be the one transacting business with the City Council. Sun.Star accepts donations for victims of Typhoon Ondoy "This will be an air-tight system that will protect all parties from corruption," Dayanghirang said. With the issuance of the SPA to only one authorized representative of the developer, "fixers" will then be easily identified and dealt with accordingly, Dayanghirang said. Rumors are rife that some councilors are the ones personally following up the permits of some developers, thus fueling suspicion that they are receiving payola from the developers. Other than the issuance of SPA, Dayanghirang said they also agreed among themselves for any councilors to refrain from dipping his/her hands into the activities of the committee where he is not a member. "So kung may lalapit sa isang councilor na humihingi ng tulong regarding sa isang committee pero di naman sya member ay dapat i-refer nya agad ito sa iba. Di na sya dapat pa makialam ditto (If someone goes to a councilor asking for help regarding a committee of which the councilor is not a member, the councilor should refer the matter to the concerned committee and not get involved with it)," Dayanghirang said. He said they will be coming up with a resolution Tuesday next week regarding the new policy. It was learned that the new policy will be placed in their house rules to be strictly complied with by all developers. Davao City Vice Mayor Sara Duterte is however not very optimistic that the new policy would finally put an end to corruption in the City Council. "Di gihapon siguro (It’s not an assurance)," was the young Duterte's reaction to the new policy's objective in stopping corruption. Among the highly controversial issues involving the council and the developers are the Interbev, Ayala's Abreeza, and the San Miguel Brewery plant that eventually transferred to nearby Darong in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur. It was Data's anniversary dinner in celebration of its 35th year and the culminating event of the 9th Mindanao Culinary Festival. Sun.Star accepts donations for victims of Typhoon Ondoy An array of specialty foods by Davao's hotels and restaurants, called a "one-stop food showcase," awaited the more than 400 diners that gathered for the special event. Upon entering the function room, it was obvious Data did a pretty good job of putting everything together. The well-appointed room was bright but not glaring to the eyes. The dining tables were covered with crisp, white linen with glistening goblets and shiny cutlery on top. Adorning the tables were amazing centerpieces made of an assortment of flowers and vegetables. And the buffet tables were full and inviting. As we took our seats, I panned the whole room and saw that many, if not most, of the guests knew each other; the ambiance had a "reunion of old friends" feel to it. It was like walking into a private event where everyone knew each other. I think that's just typically Davao, where the people own the event and not the other way around. But there was no denying that the real star of the night was what everyone went there for: the food. When dinner was opened, many did not wait for a second call to queue at the buffet table. I waited until the line was shorter, and found that the chafing dishes were replenished for those last in line. I filled my plate with only a few of the offerings (darn that durian I had for a snack earlier), and did not feel shortchanged when I tasted the food. Scrumptiously different from the usual fare. I finished off my plate and got some dessert. I had filled only my plate, but others at my table had several plates in front of them full of different kinds of food from the buffet. I thought I should have done the same; after all, it was an "all-you-can-eat" affair. But the few I dished up were enough to satisfy my taste buds and appetite, because everything was delicieux. That's as far as my French goes. A short program ensued where guest speaker and celebrity chef Reggie Aspiras gave her well-received speech. Data also awarded the winners of the MCF competitions, acknowledged its past presidents, and spoke of how far the MCF has gone since its inception. I had the privilege of being part of the 1st MCF in 1996 organized by Data past president and MCF founding chair Margie Moran Floirendo, on whose team I belonged. I thought of how much all its past presidents, and current head Ms. Gene Bangayan, have achieved by making it the largest and most prestigious culinary event in Mindanao. The buffet dinner itself spoke of how accomplished the members of our hotel and restaurant industries are, cooking up a feast good enough for the discriminating taste of Davaoeños. Hats off to the following establishments and their dishes in the buffet. Ahfat Seafood Restaurant for the Hot Prawn Salad, Chippens for the Chapche/Rice, Garden Oases for the Korean Beef Stew and Banana Chips, Karl’s Koffee Korner for the brewed coffee, Mila's Catering Services for the Steamed Vegetables and santol juice, Malagos Garden Resort for the Tableya Chocolate Cake, and Pearl Farm Beach Resort for the Herb Crusted Blue Marlin. Marco Polo for the appetizers, Apo View Hotel for the Roast Chicken Teriyaki, Chateau del Mar for the Smoked Fish and Suman Ibos, Grand Men Seng Hotel for the Lumpia Shanghai and Humba Pao, Grand Regal Hotel for the Fisherman?s Wharf, and Villa Margarita Hotel for the Pomelo Salad, Full Salad Bar, and Camote Durian Roll For Dessert. Coca-Cola Bottlers Phils. for the Coke Bar and cocktails, Nestle Professional for the Sjora Juice and 3-in-1 coffee, Tanduay Distillers for the Tanduay Bar and cocktails, Unilever Food Solutions for the Pasta Topped With Chorizo In Red Sauce, and the Center for Asian Culinary Studies-Davao for the Roast Porkloin and Fruit Station. It was truly a night of Davao-style dining. It had the two most important ingredients for a successful dining experience: excellent food and fine people to share it with. William "Yam" Laranas returned to his hometown of Davao City in time to present an important milestone in his movie directorial career, his first Hollywood movie titled The Echo. The Echo is perhaps the first Hollywood film adapted from a Filipino movie. And it's a landmark project not just for Yam but also for the Filipino movie industry that for its long history has been known as a Hollywood copycat. Sun.Star accepts donations for victims of Typhoon Ondoy In 2004, Yam was commissioned by Regal Films to create a horror film. The product was the movie Sigaw which starred Richard Gutierrez and Angel Locsin, the movie deals with a young man who moves into a haunted apartment. In 2006, it attracted Hollywood film producer Roy Lee, who was also responsible for remakes of Asian films like The Grudge, The Ring, The Departed and My Sassy Girl. Roy Lee brought the rights from Regal Films to pave the way for its remake. From its casting auditions, Yam plucked actor Jesse Bradford (Swimfan and Flags of our Fathers) to step in the main role which was played by Richard Gutierrez in Sigaw. Amelie Warner plays the role of Angel Locsin in the movie, Kevin Durand (X-men origins: Wolverine, Austin Powers) plays the role of the abusive cop which was originally played by Jomari Yllana. While Iza Calzado retains her role as the brutalized ghost-neighbor in the Echo. Also appearing in The Echo were actors Pruitt Taylor Vince and Carlos Leon, who is well known as Madonna's ex and the father of the pop superstar's first child Lourdes Maria Ciccone Leon. "It was overwhelming at first," says of Yam during his experience with the film. But he says the system is basically the same as in shooting in the Philippines but he says he had to be careful about certain idiosyncrasies and sensibilities of his cast especially since he is working with British and American actors. He also noticed about the strict professional system in Hollywood. "They are strict about the maximum 12 working hours," says Yam noticing the rule, which he has adapted in his new directorial project, GMA Films' thriller Patient X. The excitement of making Sigaw basically overpowers anything says Yam. "I basically went to L.A. to make a movie," he says. The term "Hollywood film" was just a brand and he was not conscious of the tag when he made The Echo. In the film, direk Yam retains and enhances the brooding atmospheric character of Sigaw particularly, with a more eerie sound, which becomes a more integral part of the movie. Several aspects of the story were reworked but the core of the story which is domestic violence remains as more chilling. The scariest parts of the movie are not the ghosts but the picture of domestic violence, Yam reveals. He says he is greatly affected when he sees news of women being beaten and abused. More than a ghost story The Echo and its earlier film Sigaw deals about the brutal nature of domestic violence. Asked to compare Richard Gutierrez and Jesse Bradford, who played the main roles in the original and the remake, Yam says he was lucky to pull off the Richard and Jesse's acting in the two films. When Jesse watched Sigaw, he was impressed by Richard's acting, says Yam. While Richard was ecstatic watching the Hollywood actor playing his character during the Philippine premiere. However, it was Iza Calzado whom Yam gambled to bring her on board for the remake. He says that several famous Hollywood actresses auditioned for Iza's role. He recalls being star-struck during the casting auditions since the only time he has seen them was watching them in the movies. But Yam believed in Iza and got her for the role which she reprises in the original. The Davao City National High School class of 1985 alumnus was all praises for the Filipina actress. So impressive that even the crew was moved by her performance. "There was one scene where she was beaten up, she inspired the crew to pass-the-hat where the money collected was donated to a women's welfare," Yam recalls of Iza's acting prowess. Done in an indie production budget of $5-million, The Echo has achieved rave reviews from many critics when the movie was shown in Cannes and Montreal. Currently, Yam is working a script which he hopes will be made in L.A. Direk Yam, is nowadays preoccupied with the editing of his current film titled Patient X which stars Richard Gutierrez and Cristine Reyes. The film's two stars recently were in the news when at the height of Typhoon Ondoy, Richard rescued Cristine from the rooftop of her house in Marikina City. Yam recalled the time when Cristine was frantically calling him. He called on Richard to check on Cristine. Yam recalls he never realized the gravity of the flood when Richard told him he was going to Cristine on a speedboat. Patient X he says is a new take on the Aswang folklore. He says it's like The Echo in steroids. While The Echo was known for its slow-paced suspense, Patient X will be a fast-paced, hyperactive thriller according to Yam. It was mildly surprising to note that the cinema offers guaranteed seats. When we bought the tickets, the ticket booth crew showed us a seating arrangement sheet, and let us choose where we preferred to be seated. It’s similar to many cinemas in Metro Manila, but with the seat plan still printed on paper. The ticketing personnel suggested the farthest seats from the screen, which we gladly accepted. The cinema entrance looks classy. An elegant chandelier greets moviegoers before entering the theater. Its dimly lit atmosphere and deep red drapes add to the elegance of the cinema. To ensure that the experience will be something different, a large metal signage at the entrance says “VIP”. Suddenly, I felt proud for Davao City for offering this kind of movie-viewing experience. Upon entering, we saw that the theater housed a lot less seats than the average Davao cinema. There was no second floor (or more famously known as “balcony” here in Davao), and the flooring was not too inclined. But here’s the Big Wow: insanely huge leg space! Seat rows are distanced more than a meter apart. It appears like an entire row of seats can fit in between two rows. Now, about those recliner seats… They were pretty comfortable and huge. However, they looked similar to the cinema seats in NCCC Mall. I was hoping that the seats were equipped with built-in foot rests, but I was disappointed to learn that that they were not. Nevertheless, the improved guaranteed seating plan and the large leg space are worth the extra P30 that we shelled out. Priority projects kaha ni? Well, ang uban natuman naman diba? 1. Food Terminal Complex, P 230 Million The project is being proposed by the National Development Corporation or NDC which owns the property located near the Davao Fishport Complex at Daliao, Toril. It aims to gain competitive edge among the EAGA countries through the establishment of a modern facility that will serve as consolidation, processing, packaging, storage and distribution center for the farm produce within and coming in to Davao City and to accommodate the growing numbers Mindanao, Philippines, Davao, Tourism, Dabawenyo, Government, Mayor, Information, Business, Corporation, Investment, Company, Proprietorship, Partnership, Disclosure, Rodrigo "Rody" Duterte, Lungsod Ng Davao, Trade, Center, Food, Terminal, Prospectiveof traders and bulk sales of agri-produce in Davao City. The project will have 7 components (trading center, cold storage facility, food processing center for value adding activities, dry storage warehouse, cargo handling and trucking, commercial or industrial spaces for lease or sale, and common-bonded warehouses for trading activities. Prospective Locators will have the Following Options for Ownership of the Facilities: a. Lease to own. Locators will pay a monthly amortization cost to the proponents for a maximum of 25 years to fully own the property in the complex; b. Outright purchase from proponents. However, the sale to the locators shall be subjected to certain conditions to ensure proper utilization of the complex; c. Invest in stocks. This is with the assumption that the proponents decide to create a corporation with developers and other prospective stockholders that will manage the complex. 2. Wastewater Collection and Treatment Facilities, P 1.148 Billion The study shows that the collection and transportation of the wastewater of the most densely populated area of Davao City is feasible and would cost 1.148 billion pesos or 30 million US$. The best layout has been found to be the separation of the whole area into three sub-basins, each with a pumping station, pumping directly to the wastewater treatment plant on the west bank of Davao River. The most suitable site for a wastewater treatment plant that would serve the City of Davao has been identified as that located in Bucana, on the west bank of the Davao River, just downstream of the Bolton Bridge. Subsequent to a technical-economic evaluation of several alternatives, the SBR (Sequencing Batch Reactor) process has been shown to be the most attractive treatment option in terms of its capital cost which amounts to 9.9 million US$. Operating costs using SBR process are estimated to be 1.98 million US$ annually. (Estimates excluded costs of resettlement, land, financing, duty, and tax. Complete lists and exhibits of tables, summary of computations, layouts, and comparisons can be found in the feasibility study conducted by APTCO and the SM Group International, October 1999). 3. Proposed 23-km Coastal road, P 500 – 800 Million This project is a 23-kilometer road that will start from Toril (a sub-urban area in Southern Davao) down to Cabaguio (a 4-lane road) across the Magsaysay Park. The construction of this coastal roadMindanao, Philippines, Davao, Tourism, Dabawenyo, Government, Mayor, Information, Business, Corporation, Investment, Company, Proprietorship, Partnership, Disclosure, Rodrigo "Rody" Duterte, Lungsod Ng Davao, Trade, Center, Food, Terminal, Prospective will include toll ways and a center median wide enough to accommodate the piers for the Light Rail Transit system. Depending on the cost of lot acquisition since the project covers areas that are privately owned, the project may range from P500m to P800m. 4. Seaport Expansion Facilities Modern facilities for the city’s seaport are needed with continuous increase in trading. A modern seaport will also complement the growing export-related manufacturing industries in the City. 5. Theme Parks Theme parks in the tradition of Disney and Enchanted Kingdom shall provide thousands of tourists another alternative destination and itinerary when doing business or pleasure trip in the City or its nearby localities. Due to the absence of such establishments in the entire island, a pioneering venture in said industry is seen very feasible considering the more than 30-million market of Mindanao and the Visayas. 6. Sta. Ana Waterfront Development From this area will rise amenities such as conference facilities, hotels, shopping center, fisherman’s wharf, commercial buildings, amusement facilities and parks. Left riverbank will be converted to a green area including commercial establishments. The coastal road and a few access roads will be connected with the reclamation area. This is estimated to cost around 12 billion pesos 7. Light Rail Project, P 240B This project aims to establish an urban light rail transit system that will serve the coastal areas of the city as well as neighboring cities and municipalities in Davao del Norte and Davao del Sur. It hopes to provide faster, stable and reliable services to transport people and cargoes in the area. It is expected that the implementation of the project will result to the reduction of passengers’ travel time as well as solve the traffic congestions on the roads. The project will cover a total of 37 stations for a total of 82.7 kms. Stretching from the city of Panabo in Davao del Norte and the Municipality of Sta. Cruz in Davao del Sur. It will be implemented through a Built-Operated Transfer (BOT) financing scheme and as planned, will be constructed as follows: Stage 1 Panacan to Toril 35.7 kms 22 stations Stage 2-A Toril to Sta. Cruz 25.0 kms 10 stations Stage 2-B Panacan to Panabo 22.0 kms 5 stations 8. Davao City Sports Complex, P 600 Million The project aims to create an environment-friendly complex such as indoor / outdoor sports facilities, open space, sports academy (classrooms, auditorium, library, sports laboratory, sports medicine clinic) and quarters for athletes undergoing training and sports officials. Under the agreement, the University of the Philippines is to make available, from its reservation, 20 hectares for this project and provide professional input in the operation of the sports complex. The city in turn will provide the funding for the infrastructure and the improvement of the access roads leading to the Complex. Opportunities Requiring Medium to Large Scale Capitalization 1. Business Process OutsourcingMindanao, Philippines, Davao, Tourism, Dabawenyo, Government, Mayor, Information, Business, Corporation, Investment, Company, Proprietorship, Partnership, Disclosure, Rodrigo "Rody" Duterte, Lungsod Ng Davao, Trade, Center, Food, Terminal, Prospective, Housing, The City is now being eyed as a viable site for call center operations and other related business process outsourcing operation (medico-legal transcription, animation, etc.) due to its readiness in terms of manpower, infrastructure and other required amenities. 2. Housing Development With a backlog of more than 40,000 units, Davao City is a very viable site for housing projects that will offer low-cost to medium cost housing units. 3. Products and Services for Relaxation There is a growing demand for products and services that will offer relaxation to the growing working population such as spas, salons, candles for aroma therapy, pillows, etc. 4. Establishment of Medical, Educational, Training and Sports Facilities Davao’s daytime population doubles primarily because it is considered as the de facto capital of Mindanao serving as the center for commerce, education, services. The Priority Investment Areas of the City This listing is based on a study conducted by the Services Group of Virginia. These priority areas are believed to spur further economic growth in the city. Qualified investors may avail of the local incentives both fiscal and non-fiscal. (1) Property development such as the development of industrial estates, convention centers, residential, commercial, and office building development; (2) Tourism and recreational facilities such as business hotels, restaurants, beach and mountain resorts and theme parks; (3) Agro-business and food processing such as but not limited to fruit processing (vacuum, dehydrated, spray dried), canned specialty vegetables, extruded snack food, cupflower production; (4) Light manufacturing and Assembly such as but not limited to garments, footwear, toys, bulky kitchen and house wares; and (5) Transshipment infrastructure/facilities such as seaport construction and common bonded warehouse. Bill, who was here a couple of months ago to bring his son Keith to visit the Quitains whom he considers his family, got in touch with classmates and barkadas, one of whom is Foreign Affairs Asst. Secretary Bahnarim Guinomla. He missed the other two: former mayor Zaf Respicio and Judge Danilo Belo. “Davao was very different in 1966. I was the only American in any of the colleges. It wasn’t that I was popular … more than I was unique,” he said. People were very curious at first, after all, at that time there were seldom any Caucasians living in the city, much less studying in college. But after a short period of time when the novelty wore off, he came to be just one of the boys. At the College of Liberal Arts (now College of Arts and Sciences), Bill recalls how much fun he had in the campus with his friends just learning about things he would otherwise not have experienced in the US. But it is his deep ties with the Quitains, whom he considers family, that has drawn him here again and again. In fact, this year was his tenth visit to Davao City since 1966. “It was not a matter of being a foster (family) it was being a part of the family,” he said. And this means getting in touch, like any other Filipino, with who married whom and how many children, nieces and nephews there are now in the family. It must be difficult to track everyone, especially as many have migrated to other countries, but he seemed to get in touch with them. “I have a wonderful relationship with the family and also with the people of Davao,” Bill said. He mostly remembers the names of the old streets where he used to walk with his friends or the street he passes when he goes home from school. Back then, they walked a lot. What brings him here, this year? “The reason I’m here is Keith. His elder sister Patricia went to Barcelona in Spain last year. He asked me if he also gets to travel,” he said. Keith, 15, who is in the 8th Grade, chose to come to Davao City “to visit his relatives.” It was summer break so Keith had a couple of weeks free. His impression was that it was simply wonderful to have so many relatives taking care of him and bringing him to a lot of interesting places. Keith was also able to sample most of the food served to him. “Davao has been a second home for a long time,” Bill said, sounding wistful. And his friends and family here are proud of what he has achieved. The University of Mindanao conferred to him in 1991 the distinction of “Most Outstanding Alumni of UM” which he treasures most. Mindanao Times (http://www.mindanaotimes.com.ph/?p=3955) dinabaw October 2nd, 2009, 07:31 AM PIA Press Release 2009/10/02 Relief drive in Davao continues; Dabawenyo students in Manila pitch in by Prix D. Banzon Davao City (2 October) -- The private and public sector-initiated relief drives in Davao continue as organizers called on all Dabawenyos to support the campaign to help fellow countrymen in typhoon stricken Metro Manila and Luzon areas. Davao kids studying in Manila also responded readily on the call for volunteer work. Several establishments here stage drop off points where the public could bring there donations. SM City Davao has set up a drop off area inside the mall since Monday that will accept donations either in kind or in cash as SM Foundation, Inc. through its "Operations Tulong Express" continues to distribute relief goods to the affected victims. Debbie Go, SM regional operations manager for Mindanao said the same drop off point was also set up at SM City in Cagayan de Oro even as she said that the drive is done systemside. The Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCCII) is asking members of the Davao business community to help our kababayans who are still in dire need of aid after typhoon Ondoy's unexpected devastation. Donors are encouraged to extend whatever support they can give. Ready-to-eat food, toiletries, towels, generic medicines and beddings will be very much appreciated. For your donations, please deliver it to the DCCCII Office at 2F Chamber Building, JP Laurel Avenue, Davao City. Please do not hesitate to contact the DCCCII Professional Management Team at telephone numbers (082) 221-4148 or 305-1423 and look for Ms. Majal L. Cossid or Ms. Janice A. Langcamon. Also the office of a local newspaper here is designated as receiving area for donations as Sun.Star Davao located at Granland Building, R. Castillo Street, Agdao this city opens its door to accept the donations. Their sales office at the ground floor, Door 2, Krister Twin Alley Arcade, Ponciano Reyes Street in Davao City will also receive donations. Interested donors may call 082 235-1004 to 07, 235-1009 and 227-9971. Television networks here also are into the gathering of donations as both ABS CBN and GMA are actively soliciting the support of the Dabawenyos for donations. Meanwhile many of the Davao kids now studying in Manila are actively working as volunteers in relief and distribution of goods for typhoon victims and these are students who are mostly enrolled at Ateneo de Manila University, University of the Philippines and De LaSalle University. Two of the Davao boys were among the four who came to Ateneo gym in Katipunan to start repacking relief goods on Sunday evening until midnight and they were joined the succeeding days and nights by fellow students when donations from ADMU alumni and other donors started coming in. "This would only shows that wherever they are they have that true spirit of being Dabawenyo," one parent commented in Facebook. The Davao boys also helped in the relief distribution and clean up in the Pasig area. The second most important day in the Chinese calendar, the Chinese Mid-Autumn Moon Festival falls on the 15th day of the 8th month in the Lunar Calendar. This is when the moon is believed to be in its fullest and roundest. Today, dubbed as Lantern Lighting Day, Chinatown hosted a variety of activities, including the Chinese Lantern Making Contest at the Peace Archway in Santa Ana Avenue. The weekend-long night market at Unity Archway along Magsaysay Avenue and Food and Entertainment Fiesta along Chavez Street is expected to draw huge crowds. But I guess hindi naman siguro mga taga-davao lang ang may ganyang attitude, pati na rin ang mga tao dito sa iba't - ibang panig ng mundo. Hope we can change that. Hope we can change that. Hope we can change that. Hope we can change that. Hope we can change that. Kahit pa na sinabing "We hope we can change our attitude", wala ra gihapon. Sayop ra gihapon ang mga tao. Kailangan ibalik ang mga tao sa high school. dj_olrac October 2nd, 2009, 10:33 AM Ang linis ng Davao pati tao iniligpit!:D http://img44.imageshack.us/img44/641/imgp5344090927.jpg (http://img44.imageshack.us/i/imgp5344090927.jpg/) http://picc1212.blog68.fc2.com/blog-entry-1611.html naisisip ko lang este doon lang tayo nakakaiisip how lucky Davao is,lagi tayo nagrereklamo kahit ankle deep lang ang baha at in less than an hour suma subside na, kung tutuusin you can't fathom the tragedy what MM is going thru, 24 hrs cleaning by our street sweepers at di lang man tayo marunong mag segregate? The P2.48-billion Abreeza project has as its centerpiece, Ayala Center Davao, Roberto U. Teo, the center’s chief, said in a recent interview. "We will surpass the P4.4 billion in 1997," he said, referring to the year when the city posted a record amount from investors applying for incentives. The approved applications from January to September were dominated by the property sector, making up P3.98 billion of the total P4.132 billion. One company, the Asaje Realty Corp. boosted the tourism sector with the P60-million My Hotel project. Another firm, Invent Foods Manufacturing Inc., invested P105 million for its coffee herbal processing plant. Mr. Teo said a manufacturing plant worth about P300-400 million is in the pipeline for approval, though he declined to reveal the name of the company.
