Wow! am looking forward to this....sana matuloy, atleast pag punta mo sa Riverfront marami kang option whether to waterfront promenade, river cruise, crodile park, white water rafting(i guess the're offering now).

Sana din madevelop ang riversides hanggang Agro Industrial Foundation or even up to the mouth of the river with a nature's touch ambiance/scenery...am sure that would make davao a hit for tourists..and even achieve a greater-than-ever placement as the BEST LIVABLE CITIES IN THE WORLD ranking....

Amen to that, Junex. I'm looking forward to seeing a riverside promenade all the way from Maa bridge to the Bucana area. Someone should exhort/cajole the local government to start extending the groovy promenade sitting underneath the Bolton bridges.

MAYOR DESCRIBED AS CITY'S TOP TOURIST ATTRACTION

CITY Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is currently Davao City's number one tourist attraction, aside from his being a strong magnet to investors.

This was Vice Mayor Luis Bonguyan's frank description of the mayor, saying he doesn't mind being called the mayor's number one fan.

Bonguyan described his boss in glowing terms in a speech he delivered before some 50 businessmen attending the 6th Davao City Business Conference Annual Policy Forum at Davao City Convention and Trade Center last week.

The vice mayor was, delivering for Duterte, the mayor's response to the resolutions of the Davao City business sector at the end of the annual business conference.

He also mentioned Duterte being chosen as the 2005 Pinoy of the Year by a national daily tabloid publication.

"Many of our visitors, especially those from Luzon who have heard so much about the exploits and controversial statements of Mayor Duterte, admit that they came here primarily to see the mayor in person," Bonguyan bared.

City Tourism Officer Edmundo "Id" Acaylar confirmed the vice mayor's statement.

"During the Asean Tourism Forum, other conventions and the Lakbay Aral trips of local government officials here, most of the delegates would want to meet and have pictures taken with the mayor," he said.

In his speech with the businessmen, Bonguyan relayed Duterte's appreciation to the support of the business sector, led by the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, for his administration's programs and projects.

"We truly value your partnership especially in the areas of tourism and investment promotion, environment, transparency and public accountability, youth development and gender mainstreaming," Bonguyan quoted Duterte as saying.

"Indeed, Davao City is now poised to sustain the gains we have made in our local economy. When the rest of the country is in bad financial shape, our city continues to post a positive balance of trade, sound fiscal administration, and increased private and public investments," he said. (AMA)

if im not mistaken this is the site today of the davao mental hosp.?

I think so. If you've seen the old hospital building, it's similar to the Gabaldon-type school building which were built by the Americans all over the country, and which are mostly one story but elevated. A living example would be the Palma Gil Elementary School (nasunog na pala).

The hospital is already part of our heritage. It should be restored and preserved. If they'll be transferring the mental health facilities somewhere, that building is a perfect structure for adaptive reuse. Tear down the concrete wall fence (forget about the mural paintings) and replace it with see-through fence, and prune the trees so it'll be visible from the intersection.

PIA Press Release
08/09/2006
Feature: Variety of Kadayawan songs and music at MTS Taboan

Davao City (9 August) -- That Dabawenyos are music-loving people and can even be more creative than their counterparts in Manila and elsewhere in the world cannot be understated in this music festival at the Matina Town Square halfway through the Kadayawan festival.

Noli Bencio himself an avid musician of all sorts of style and make, announced Tuesday at the weekly Royal Mandaya Hotel's Sports Communicators Organization of the Philippines (Scoop-Davao) the holding of an all-Dabawenyo, all-music concerts at the said venue on Sunday, August 13, 2006 starting at 4:30 o'clock pm.

Everybody is welcome to hear and taste the liveliness of non-stop music by a variety of groups and bands of singers, according to Bencio, president of the Davao Musician Association.

It will be uniquely Davao but classically all-around with the different types of entertainment from the glorious oldies, to the more inspiring show bands and the globally-accepted Latino bands.

Some 30 different bands have already expressed interest in participating at the MTS Taboan where we expect the gathering as the word "Taboan" suggests, of people from all walks of life, creed and make-up, to also express oneness and unity in their liking for music and songs.

Bencio also expressed hopes to reunite and make more strong and vibrant the music industry Davao-style. (PIA/Romy Sabaldan) [top

PIA Press Release

Feature: Davao Oriental proud of its agri-tourism

Davao City (9 August) -- After consolidating the "real gems" of Davao Oriental, the province is now pushing to fully maximize agri-tourism.

Found to be the crowd-drawer sector, the Provincial Tourism Office is currently doing strategic planning to further develop facilities, infrastructure to support the growing market drawn by the province's agri-tourism.

Provincial Tourism Officer Lyrna Palma claimed that Davao Oriental's booming agriculture sector is helping her office convince more visitors to come to the famous tourist spots found in every municipality.

Palma was referring to the popular coconut product grown in almost all towns, mango and other fruit trees that have been attracting plenty of investors and visitors as well.

" These industries are very promising and on the frontline in the pursuit for tourism promotions," she said.

With all the efforts of the provincial government to boost local tourism, Palma also pointed out some challenges in such pursuit.

"Basically, there has to be a tour guide and tourism volunteers. They will undergo trainings and mountaineering course.

Palma also emphasized that in places where tourist attractions are seen, it is very important to ensure social acceptability.

The Provincial Tourism Officer explained that just like in the municipality of San Isidro where the bonsai plants are found, the residents accepted the responsibility to accommodate local and foreign visitors, since there is no lodging houses and hotels in the said municipality.

Even in the capital town of Mati, there is no venue as yet that could accommodate more than 300 participants of a forum, seminar, or conference.

However, with the new emerging function halls and hotels soon to be completed, this will insinuate a welcome atmosphere for a promising business venture in the municipality of Mati and province of Davao Oriental. (PIA and DXHM) [top]

Tiguwang na jud diay ka Bustero hehehe.

I have to contest that the Japanese really did a lot for Davao. More than a hundred years ago, the first Japanese that came here were actually from Baguio, working for the treacherous Kennon Road. After the Kennon Road was finished and without work, an enterprising Japanese named Ota Kyousaburo eyed Davao as the next Japanese destination.

For 30 years Davao flourished with only one product, like Iloilo before. Abaca became the cash crop of the Davaoenos, and so many local migrants came in place. The Japanese virtually controlled the trade of the city.

The other guy in Davao's development is Yoshizo Furukawa, a graudate of an agricultural university in Japan. He built the plantations in Daliaon in Toril.

The Davao-Japanese relations were so important, the Japanese even built a consulate here before. Power was first utilized in Mintal. More and more migrants came. Japanese became an important language in trade and commerce. (BTW, Chavacano was the lingua franca before of Davao.)

This grew to the fears of Manila politicians that indeed, they made Davao a chartered city.

Thus is the glorious past of the Japanese here in Davao. Pity we don't see Japanese streets or places. Of course there's Bago Oshiro in Mintal...

I've heard before daw na ang Greenbelt park was not really Greenbelt, but an industrial park. How sure was that?

To problemsolver, the LRT plans for Davao will take place on or before 2021. Siguro by that time, the traffic here will be hellish.

Davao will have to secure some land areas to make this project feasible.

However, Mono-rails can be very good for people, and the pockets.

Anyway, roads in Davao are really wide. The only prospect for a traffic jam to happen is either when someone crashed cars with another or the LTO was there to arrest someone, or when there is a project. :D

The wide-stripped oval there is the prospect Greenbelt park.

I was beginning to be skeptical. Why build a Greenbelt park? Why not just renovate Magsaysay? IMHO, Davao needs a lot of "massive concrete structures" sometimes to complement development and wow the eyes of urbanites and urbanity lovas.

Really, the swimming pool of Marco Polo stood out. But with all the beaches, why? :D

tidbits...

A breastfeeding station was put up at the New City Commercial
Corporation (NCCC) Mall, the first ever station in the Mindanao-
Visayas area.

The breastfeeding station was designed to convince mothers to
breastfeed their children while in the workplace or in malls.

"Their positive response will not only mean that they are being
socially responsible to their clientele but it also means being
responsible to the Filipino people," Ubial added.

The breastfeeding stations, Ubial said, fosters an enabling
environment for mother and baby friendly workplace that supports
mothers to continue breastfeeding up to two years and beyond.

Ubial said the station was established to encourage mothers to still
breastfeed their children even they are at work or in the mall.

The NCCC mall has provided a private and clean lounge area where
breastfeeding mothers can feed their children.

Cebu Pacific to launch direct flights to HK from Cebu, Davao

Cebu Pacific Air, Inc., 49-percent owned by conglomerate JG Summit Holdings Inc., said on Wednesday it will soon launch direct flights to Hong Kong from Cebu and Davao.

The airline said fares for Cebu-Hong Kong and Davao-Hong Kong routes will be priced cheaper by P500.

In a statement, the carrier said it will be offering an introductory seat sale from August 8 to 15.

The Cebu-Hong Kong route will be offered for P1,999 one-way, while the Davao-Hong Kong service will be priced for P2,499 one-way. Travel date for the promo is from October 2 to 25, 2006.

After the seat sale, the Cebu-Hong Kong flight starts at P2,499 one-way while the Davao-Hong Kong flight starts at P2,999 one-way.

I am not sure if Davao residents would want to pay loans that can never be repaid! The limited real estate (space and area) needed to be conserved and efficiently used. Only MagLev can provide protection of real estate (no real estate required), loan-free investment because it can now be locally designed, developed, and deployed cheaply, dividends to Davao region residents, and jobs to Davao regions, if not the whole Mindanao. Maglev will be built in the Davao regions and should provide employment to over 100,000 sub-contractors, and over 5 million spill-over direct and indirect employment.

A U.S. Federal Transport studies made ini 2002 comparing 400 km/hr Maglev to that of 150 km/hr Canada's Bombardier JetTrain proved Maglev to be superior, efficient, environmentally sound, cheapest, and the safest mode for Mass Transit Transport Systems.

I was beginning to be skeptical. Why build a Greenbelt park? Why not just renovate Magsaysay? IMHO, Davao needs a lot of "massive concrete structures" sometimes to complement development and wow the eyes of urbanites and urbanity lovas.

Greenbelt Park should be a welcome development for Davaoeños. The downtown area is fast-becoming congested. You don' t want our City to become a concrete jungle, Ady, 'di ba? I'd like to believe that what you really meant by saying "massive concrete structures" are the utility networks (sewer, water, power and communications) that will be built under our streets, and not the buidings and other monstrous structures. The Park will become the City's breathing space - "The Lungs of the City." We should be proud of Mayor Duterte's decision.

Tear down the concrete wall fence (forget about the mural paintings) and replace it with see-through fence, and prune the trees so it'll be visible from the intersection.

again in unison...we should shout this proposal out loud so that the authorities would hear us!!!! there is money in cultural heritage business and it does not entail a big amount of capital plus .... it's labor intensive (people can be employed then) .......

Cebu Pacific said it will be operating direct flights from Cebu to Hong Kong four times weekly and Davao to Hong Kong (via Cebu) three times weekly, starting October 2, 2006.

The Cebu-Hong Kong service is scheduled to operate every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday while Davao–Hong Kong route will operate on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Local governments can finance this thru their own budget. In addition, the people, the community members, can finance this thru MultiCooperative membership. This combination of finances from local sources are adequate to deploy these technologies. I will probably setup an interactive website where local residents can participate in this project towards the setting up of a Multicooperative. Local governments can participate in this interactive website so that a consensus will be developed towards mutual contract acceptance for project development.

:runaway:

Magsaysay Park was once Davao's premier downtown destination for dining and recreation. That was all gone because of poor maintenance.

Greenspots? You mean open spaces like parks and plazas, greenbelts and urban forests? The City government has a big responsibility of protecting and preserving the few remaining open spaces in the downtown area, as well as identifying permanent open spaces for all barangays that are candidates of becoming urbanized. As the City grows, the need for open spaces grows.

Magsaysay Park has sufficient (I think so) sewerage collection, containment and disposal system through the use of septic tanks. The foul smell in the south side of the Park emanates from a drainage line that collects waste water and surface runoff from the downtown area and dumps them to Isla Verde and Salmonan area, and straight to Davao Gulf.

One good example of adaptive reuse is the Casa Esperanza of the Habana clan along Rizal Street. I think it was built in the '30s. The owners converted it into a cafe but retained the original character of the house. It's one of the perfect examples of heritage conservation. It's the "IN" thing now. Sumabay na tayo sa uso!

In previous postings in the Davao Thread, I mentioned about transforming the City Tourism Council from an events organizer and GRO to full fledged department out of the Office of the City Mayor. The City Tourism Department could also function like the NCCA (National Commission for Culture and the Arts). They could identify heritage houses and structures for preservation and come up with a plan, in collaboration with the owners, for adaptive reuse and for protection. It will be good for cultural heritage preservation, and certainly good for tourism.

cooperativism is a good concept of ownership but do you consider problems of getting together cooperatives to buy the idea that was never put to test before their eyes. introducing them to the technology may take a lot of time and push even if you use the web i guess. it's not about the negative attitude of people but the term of return of investment they might put in first consideration for a technology that was never tried and tested to their knowledge. you will be dealing with a lot of owners of the cooperatives who might turn around in the middle of commitments. this all imo could imperil the infractructure's success. i guess it is easier and less complicated if you're only dealing with a single legitmate entity like local executive. it could expedite the project. i believe it is right time for davao to embark on efficient, faster and realible mass transport system now, not only for present need, but also in anticipation of the future need. with maglev technology, i will give it a go.

The MultiCooperative will have several projects. It will have multiple purposes. Multicooperative will have proponents and these proponents will include the engineers and scientists who will be building these projects from the drawing board to deployment. People can participate as the process goes on. Membership fees will be based on potential open membership to the regions and should not be a burden to their pockets say P100 or P1,000 membership. The project's daily progress and milestones are open to the public once patent or patents has been filed. Even if the patent is pending, construction prototype will get underway. Because the Multicooperative has multiple objectives, to describe below:

1. Proven Projects and its components for cheap electricity production. Its sub-components can be sub-contracted thru specifications.
2. Component productions. Small component productions can get to the open market as well.
3. Cheap fresh water extraction (not thru wells) but a proven technology that will not disturb the environment.
4. Sub-contracted metals and metals forming thru specifications.
5. Sub-contracted ceramics components manufacturing thru specifications.
6. Installation services can be sub-contracted.
7. Assemblies can be sub-contracted to specifications.
8. Marketing can be sub-contracted.
9. Outlets for distributions can be sub-contracted.
10. Formation of a Credit Union Bank open to all MultiCooperative members who will recived deposits and process micro-loans.
11. Formation of Micro-Insurance for life, property, casualties, medical, dental, vision open to all MultiCooperative members.
12. Members can get jobs within the MultiCooperativwe projects.
13. Members can get training in forming their own sub-contracting facilities.

You see, in most industrial cities and countries, the trend now is going back to basic - focusing more into its environment and nature. I do not want to see Davao as a massive urban and concrete jungle in the near future with no greens. With Davao's newest project - i sure do praise our local government for such initiative. An Oasis in the middle of an urban jungle.

Flyovers? We do have the most numbers of flyovers in Mindanao. As a matter of fact, Davao City is the first (and to date, the only) City in the Southern Philippines to have its own operational vehicular underpass. Currently, the newest project by DPWH is the Ulas Flyover.

Wider Roads/New Roads? One of the city's projects is the development of farm to market roads. Not that evident since these projects are located in the city outskirts.

Concrete structures such as LRT System? The local government assigned a private firm to conduct the feasibility study few months ago. This is also one of the projects being promoted by the local government / DIPC to some investors.

Industrial Parks? Have you ever been to where Union Cement is located? We do have industrial parks located in the northern area of Davao. First Mindanao Industrial Park Corporation located in Sasa, Ilang Agro Industrial Estate Corp, and First Oriental Business and Industrial Park to name a few.

Industrial Parks should be located outside of the downtown area. PTA ground is so small to be developed as one.

After Cebu Pacific (Davao - Hongkong Direct flight)... PAL is next

PHILIPPINE Airlines (PAL) executive vice president Domingo Duerme said new routes are now in the drawing board for international flights from Davao.

Duerme said talks are ongoing for a Davao-Hongkong route that could be the newest direct route from the south.

He said that if this will materialize, the opening of the international route will take place next year.

PAL had been servicing international passengers even here in Davao but these are all connecting flights.

He said this is being done through their "check thru facilities" where he cited for instance that passengers from Davao bound for the US may check-in at the Davao International Airport and they will be assigned seats even for their international flights.

The passengers may no longer do the hassle of checking in their cargoes when they reach the NAIA in Manila because PAL will take charge of it the moment they check in the domestic airport. And this case is true to other international points that are served by PAL.

Meanwhile, Duerme also said that they have terminated their Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Riyahd, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia routes

He said they lost the competition to other carriers in the Middle East.

Davao malls support breastfeeding program

By Rose B. Palacio

Davao City (9 August) -- Aside from providing support to Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), the management of New City Commercial Center (NCCC) is also supportive and an active advocate of the government's breastfeeding program.

The first entity which responded to the government Breastfeeding program, all three NCCC malls two in Davao City (at Matina and Magsaysay) and one in Tagum have established its "Breastfeeding station" which were launched Monday at NCCC Mall, Matina with guests from WHO, UNICEF and other stakeholders of the Department of Health, the lead agency which spearheaded the "National Breastfeeding week."

True to NCCC's vision as a "Leader who cares," NCCC realizes that by encouraging more new mothers to continue breastfeeding their infants six months or more, it is making a small step in saving lives and reduce illnesses where non-breastfed babies are at risk, said Dr. Marites Nalupa, NCCC's company physician who together with other NCCC mall's physician: Eriberto Barriga Jr. chair of NCCC PR council,Dr. Melvin Dale Saavedra and Dr. Lina Rabar added that the breastfeeding stations will be made available for nursing mothers who work for NCCC, its tenant's employees and customers.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), represented by its Consultant Alex Eillamo, WHO estimates that formula-fed babies are at risk of dying 14 times when suffering from diarrhea, 3.6 times of pneumonia and 2.5 times for other infections.

The same study pointed put that nine out of ten infant deaths below six months occur mostly in non-breastfed infants. It seems that the exclusive and continued breastfeeding prevents 63% of all infant-related diseases.

Both officials of WHO and Dr. Marius Gotink of UNICEF explained the relevance of breastfeeding adding that 60 percent of children die of malnutrition worldwide. In the Philippines, about 30 percent of children are underweight or below their minimum height.

The country is placed as sixth for child survival, where 50,000 children dies before they even reach five years old and where deaths occur within the child's first six months of life.

DOH XI Director Paulyn Jean Rosell-Ubial expressed her gratitude to all partners especially the NCCC management that popularize breastfeeding in the workplace and in places where people congregate.

Flyovers? We do have the most numbers of flyovers in Mindanao. As a matter of fact, Davao City is the first (and to date, the only) City in the Southern Philippines to have its own operational vehicular underpass. Currently, the newest project by DPWH is the Ulas Flyover.

As a matter of fact, no other city in Mindanao has vehicular underpass and flyovers. Outside Manila only Davao and Cebu in the Visayas have these infrastructures.

Internet service firm opens in Oro
By Stephen Capillas

AN INTERNET and telephone service provider opened its doors to the Cagayan de Oro and Northern Mindanao market through the inauguration of its office at Hayes-Corner Pabayo streets this city last Tuesday evening.

The company called DcTech Micro Services Inc. provides Internet and DSL connections in partnership with the Misamis Oriental Telephone Co. (Misortel) and Teloff CICT.

Dc Tech Micro Services Inc. Project Coordinator Malou Orioste said their company is the fastest growing Internet provider with its main branch in Davao and others in General Santos City, Marbel North Cotabatao and Tagum City.
Orioste said their Cagayan de Oro office will service commercial and residential areas in Northern Mindanao.

She said their city office is composed of 85 personnel excluding those from the sales department.

Their services for residential areas and commercial establishments are divided into three with Pisolutions and Extreme Net for residential homes and Extreme Misornet for the commercial establishments.

"Right now we are providing 80 percent of the Internet connections to Cagayan de Oro for both commercial and residential areas," Orioste said.

For his part, Dc Tech marketing partner Manuel Marriz Agbon said the launching of Dc Tech Micro Services Inc. is also in line with providing affordable Internet services down to the masses.

"Like cell phones, which have become accessible to most everyone in the country, Dc Tech Services aims to do its part to expand access by everyone of Internet services," he said.

Frank W. Carpenter
Hospital Steward, United States Army
Executive Secretary of the Philippine Government

Frank W. Carpenter relieved General Pershing on December 16, 1913, to become the first civil governor of the new department. The Moros made great strides during the governorship of this capable man.

In 1913, the peace-loving Mr. Frank W. Carpenter became the first civil governor of Mindanao and Sulu.

The Moros, convicted of Carpenter's sincerity in his offer of peace with honor, laid down their arms and accepted American rule.

Governor Carpenter, by his able administration of Moro affairs and his personal affability, accomplished within a few years what Spanish and later American soldiers had failed to achieve in many years of warfare.

He was also listed as the first civilian governor of the undivided Cotabato Province (or all of Mindanao). Also note that a famous park in downtown Zamboanga City is named after General John Pershing, the predecessor of Governor Carpenter.

The one you asked aobut gravy.... well her name is..:)..I am the girl giving my friend Linnéa a kiss on her birthday...sorry dinabaw...now you must be so disapointed.. that I am that pale serious one to the right... But Linnéa will like you do not worry ....and you like her.. so no problemas..

The bodyguards are there to protect them because our mothers are so scared about everything in the world..so their idéa was "oh we have danny and leif to help out" hahaha .and as it now my friends are saving them from "dangerous" filipinas in Manila and Cebu...and then they as you do, love beer my friends see them always drunk more or less...hahahaha is a comedy situation..

I have things to do, places to see and people to meet....see ya later guy´s, BTW my friends will be in Davao befor me...I am still in Sweden cause mamma needed me and I need her...at the moment.. .cause my father passed away a while back..

See ya later gravy :)

Now you know.

If only we could place markers on these streets. It would be educational at the same time preserving our heritage. A picture of Governor Carpenter could easily be secured from the US. including his biography specifically his contributions to the development of Davao and Mindanao as a whole. A mini park with his bronze bust would be appropriate. Siempre, in honor of Uyanguren and Claveria, markers din.

Tips from an Insider
August 2006

LAST DAYS OF SUMMER

By: Ray Ian C. Garcia

With barely a month to go, we are counting down to the last days of summer. It's been a fun, exciting summer so far. Well, at least, for me. I have visited different summer paradises, went on a road trip with friends, trekked the countryside, witnessed festivities, journeyed to fascinating beaches, and satiated myself with lots of summer-licious food. *Burp*

Surely, we're on the last leg of summer but my feet are still itching a little more action just right before the month of May winds up the season with its daylong drizzles. To those who haven't found the time yet to go on a summer holiday, well, read on and let me count my ten suggested ways to enjoy the remaining days of summer without even leaving the boundaries of our beautiful Davao.

No.1. Ever watched this one-of-a-kind Bird Show in Malagos Garden
Resort (tel. 221.1545)? No matter how many times I've seen the show, it still amazes me to see parrots playing basketball, crows picking up stones, ducks parading together, etc. The resort also offers a Nature Field Trip that incorporates lectures, audio/visual shows and interactive guided tours that shows and teaches visitors about the forests, orchards, creek ecosystems, butterflies, mushroom culture and various adventure activities that are sure to entertain and educate guests at the same time.

No.2. With the cruel summer heat, getting into some water action is both an escape and a treat. Davao Gulf is a virtual playground of numerous aqua sports such as diving, game fishing, jet-skiing, snorkeling, and so much more. However, if you're on a budget and yearning to learn a new hobby, simply hit the shores of Times Beach or Mer Grander Ocean Resort and try skimboarding. Or you can go to Samal or Talikud and discover the still-many secluded beaches and coves in the island.

No.3. You've read, heard and seen so much about white water rafting (tel. 301.2020). I have done it twice, and I swear, rafting in Davao River is one hell of a water ride. Now, it's your turn to brave three hours of river journey to the city's less seen frontier, a place enveloped with lush vegetation, limestone walls and riverside villages.

No.4. Rediscover the wild side of Davao and trek to the mountains of Tamayong, Marilog and Toril. Various trails in Tamayong and Marilog lead you to pristine rivers and waterfalls as well as caves and breathtaking panorama of the wilderness. An easy trail man-made, such as in Eden Nature Park, is a great way to exercise and bond with families and friends before hitting the buffet table. Eden Nature Park (tel. 299.2992) also has campsites and other activities including fishing, horseback riding, bird watching, etc. Make sure to always bring water and First Aid kit.

No.5. Learn a musical skill or two. Jhine Music and Arts Center (tel. 299.0082) offers courses on piano, keyboard, guitar (acoustic, bass, classical or electric), drums, violin, saxophone, flute, clarinet and voice. They also teach group vocal technique, band synchronization, choral training, and choreography. Drop them a line and see what musical skill fits you.

No.6. Do something fish-y. If you're in the mood for a good food trip without ruining your diet, troop to Tugbok and have a hearty meal of fresh "hito" (catfish). You can have it deep fried, grilled, or cooked with coconut milk (Oops, there's goes your diet!). This is a perfect pit stop after visiting the Philippine Eagle Center and Malagos Garden Resort in nearby Baguio District.

No.7. Let out the hopeless romantic in you at the Waterfront Insular Hotel (tel. 233.2881), the city's only resort hotel. It is certainly one great place to switch on your the romantic side with its invigorating beach atmosphere while just being 10 minutes away from the busy city center. Besides taking a stroll by the beachfront, you can start the day with mouthwatering breakfast feast at Café Uno, and then have an afternoon merienda of their delectable Pizza
Davaoeño. Then get nostalgic, reminiscing about your salad days on board the calesa topiary.

No.8. When was the last time you visited our museum? It's about time that you rediscover our heritage at the newly renovated Davao Museum (tel. 233.1734), a repository of the city's arts, cultural and social legacies. Located inside Insular Village Phase 1, the museum lets you travel back in time with its interesting displays of historical relics, photos and dioramas. It is divided into 3
galleries – History of Davao, Contemporary Arts and Crafts, and Ethnicity. Entrance fee is P100 for adults and P20 for kids.

No.9. Want to wrestle a crocodile? While you can't exactly combat one, instead you can cuddle a baby mindorensis crocodilus at the Davao Crocodile Park (tel. 300.6307). It's open daily but on Fridays to Saturdays, you can witness crocodile encounters, tightrope exhibition, crocodile jump and other reptilian action at 10 AM and 3 PM. You can even have your photos taken with the menacing crocs. All you need is P75 (adults)/ P50 (kids) and a lot of guts to befriend the crocs.

No. 10. What better time to get pampered after agonizing from this summer's terrible heat and humidity. At the Bahia Spa of Metro Lifestyle (tel. 228.6182) along F. Torres St., you can have a massage, body scrub, foot and hand spa, tub soak, and other indulgence that can truly keep your mind off from the real world. It will also make you forget about work and household chores and make you feel like a king or queen, well, at least for an hour or two.

Still want more ways to enjoy the remaining days of summer? E-mail me at wanderlust@.... I might need a companion to tag along with in my next adventure.

i've hear of this guy carpenter before as i have a project of a designing a coffeetable book before i left davao (kaso was madayon or makalahutay).

now back to that map (caltex, 60s) i pointed out in the other thread about missing streets (or probably the better word is non-existent). it just shows how the rest of the country viewed davao. siguro, they saw davao as very provincial to say the least, mao nagbutang butang na lang og mga dalan.

which also points me to a question, is there really an official davao city map? when i worked with midtown printing, we designed and distributed a map for a lot of cities. i even saw a lot of variations of the davao city map (from the original digital file i did, or maybe the just copied it). with google earth now, it's a great tool to reinvent the davao map (downtown and the satellite districts).

I think, wala. In the early '90s, when I was doing some studies for the road network of the proposed tourism estate in Samal Island, we solicited assistance from a geodetic engineer based in Davao City. And I saw a detailed road map of Davao City (up to the smallest dirt roads) displayed on his office's wall. I hinted that he should provide the City or the Department of Tourism with a copy of his map so that they could update the tourists or the road map. He told me, ayaw nya kasi wala daw pambayad ang City.

probably i would agree with your friend. only is it's unfortunate. our map project too was done without the city's help. then, the map i did i added even the flow of traffic sa downtown area. the idea was it would be helpful for the visitors (remember, on the matter of signs, davao is kind of least helpful when driving around). so then, the only way of knowing how to drive around is "go with the flow".

one another thing, davao streets are "notorious" for disappearing painted lanes. siguro lagi kay boysen lang ang gigamit. how i wish the local government will be serious about those lanes. otherwise, there's so much danger on not knowing where or which lane to drive on.

BTW maybe the missing streets(broken lines) are due to none asphalt or cement pavings?

salamat sa pagcanvass don. will be in contact kay i'm serious of having a homecoming exhibit next year (presumably december).

about those streets, a lot of those streets like obrero were dirt roads during those times. cement pavings were probably in the core downtown area (probably late 60s or 70s). all i can remember is most streets in the downtown area were asphalt.

anyway, during those times, ang obrero was murag suburb na. daghang changes na since then. also, if you're familiar with bajada towards buhangin, there was a road right after redemptorist church and before davao light which led all the way to ladislawa. kaso it's now occupied by informal (?) settlers. i don't know what happened to that, but it's a narrow road. maybe jon (belriver) can enlighten as on that.

probably i would agree with your friend. only is it's unfortunate. our map project too was done without the city's help. then, the map i did i added even the flow of traffic sa downtown area. the idea was it would be helpful for the visitors (remember, on the matter of signs, davao is kind of least helpful when driving around). so then, the only way of knowing how to drive around is "go with the flow".

one another thing, davao streets are "notorious" for disappearing painted lanes. siguro lagi kay boysen lang ang gigamit. how i wish the local government will be serious about those lanes. otherwise, there's so much danger on not knowing where or which lane to drive on.

oi oi die hard pro-BOYSEN baya ko...hehe

Davao beauty tilt nears end

By Moses Billacura (Phil Standard - 11-08-06)

DAVAO CITY—This year’s edition of the Hiyas ng Kadayawan beauty pageant will likely be the last time Davao beauties will be seen on stage after women’s group in the city deluged the organizers with complaints.

“Ang gulo ng women’s groups (Women’s groups are causing a raucus),” said Id Acaylar, cochairperson of the Kadayawan Festival executive committee, adding that the complaints are repeated every year for the past 10 years and it may be time to stop holding the contest to put an end to the protests, too.

The women’s group complained that the Hiyas ng Kadayawan scheduled for Aug. 16 violates a city ordinance, the Women’s Code of Davao City, because it “commodifies” women.

The organizers said they will also include men to pacify the protesters. “Ang Hiyas, walang gender ‘yan (Hiyas has no gender). Hiyas means gem,” Acaylar explained. But that did not ease the complaints and also drew criticism.

But Davao City Vice Mayor Luis Bonguyan insists that there is nothing wrong with the contest, adding that it is only Councilor Angela Librado-Trinidad, who authored the women’s code, who is against it.

The Davao City Women Development Code of 1997 or City Ordinance 5004, particularly Section 5 of Article 1 states that “beauty contests, which tend to commodify, abuse, humiliate and treat women as sex objects, shall be strictly prohibited in schools, communities, barangays, and by the City Government in its special celebrations, but in their stead and projection of women’s strength and potentials, especially with regard to indigenous and culturally relevant forms shall be encouraged.”

ito ba topic ngayon....hmmmm when it comes to tolerance I guess it's still a long long way to go for many pinoys--->these conservatives (kuno) are our persisting problems and ironically they are the very ones in the government and hampering the nation's growth (i mean in general).......we need more young people with new perspectives...iboto si TJ Brewed, Dinabaw, Davao Eagle, Paulkrps, Gravy Addict et. al. sama nyo na rin si Inday Lena :) .........

I read your article today at The Philipine Star and I would like to thank you for thinking about Davao. It is very seldom that we see opinion makers like your position and declare Cebu and Davao as tourist destinations with "decent airport terminal buildings and better tourism environment".

Davao, indeed, is a wonderful city with many potentials that are slowly being fulfilled. We are putting our unified efforts through the Davao Convention and Visitors Cooperative Bureau (DCVB) to turn it into the next international destination of the country. Our new and functional airport can support over a million visitors a year. We have at least 2,900 hotel rooms of various categories and support services that make for a unique, memorable and comfortable stay. And crucial to our success, we are working very hard to get new international connections to add to our flights from Singapore and Indonesia.

Certainly, things are looking up in Davao. We just placed our bid to host the 20th Philippine Advertising Congress in 2007. We pray that we host it as the high-value PR premium that comes with it will surely boost our efforts in reaching out to our markets in saying that all is well in Davao!

Once again, thank you for the media space you accorded Davao

Kumusta Paul,

I think you are referring to Bacaca Road. Indeed that road will lead you to Ladislawa's rear entrance gate, Dizon residence/office compound. That also connects to the circumferential road. It's quite a heavily traveled road these days, Paul.

Four years ago, when I was driving down from our farm in Indangan, traffic was stopped on Bacaca Road. Then I saw some of Davao's 911 and fire protection personnel and ominous black smoke and right away I knew there was a fire raging in one of the squatter areas along Bacaca Rd. Seeing that I was driving a Ford F150 they asked if they could use my truck to bring firehose extensions to the firetrucks that were fighting the blaze. So I told them to jump into the back of the pickup truck and I drove them to the site. I'm sure it saved them valuable time instead of lugging those heavy hoses for almost 500 meters. Ang sikip kasi ng daan with all the firetrucks that were already on the site.

I agree to this with all my heart and mind..... Beauty contests are an insult to all women of this world, this goes as well for child prostitution, regular prostitution abuse and all kinds of salveries that degrade women and damage their feeling of selfworth and future possibilities.

nope, not that one. here's the image.

now i'm beginning to understand. there's a lot of this footpaths/trails that existed but never graduated into a full-sized roads. this one in particular is just at the back of davao light and disappears somewhere near the buhangin road (near a property line of san pedro village. what i don't understand is, there are settlers along that way just infront of hollow-block fences. was it a road back in the old days and abandoned when they made the buhangin road?

i think the one you meant also connects to that road. when i was in highschool the contractor of our house in panorama lived in that vicinity.

DATE income seen to increase by 25 percent
By Rizalene P. Acac Published : 2006-08-08

THE sales projection for the 6th Davao Trade Exposition (DATE) is expected to increase by 25 percent compared to the sales in the previous year. Atty. Domingo Duerme, Date 2006 chairperson, said this year’s event is seen to surpass the record P82 million revenues they noted for 2005. In 2003, Date was able to record about 36 million sales, which increased to P55.5 million or a 55 percent growth the year after. The exposition has been noted as a sales-generating activity since it expanded its composition from agricultural-based companies to industry, trade and commerce and service, he said. Duerme said the thrust of this year’s exposition is “Davao Goes Global” which hopes to jumpstart local businesses into competing with the world’s best. “We are not simply limiting this to the locals. We want to showcase the products and resources not only of the Philippines but also major regional players,” he said. The organizers confirmed the participation of business chambers from the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines (BIMP) East Asean Growth Area (EAGA). Invitations were also sent to the consular offices of Malaysia, Indonesia and Japan which he claimed gave positive responses. They also see China as an emerging market. He said they also hope to double the involvement of US-based companies from last year’s 30 participants. Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCCII) disclosed that FedEx and US Embassy asked for reservations. Bienvenido Cariaga, DCCCII chair, said they are looking at the telecommunications and the agricultural products to be hot items for buyers. He said during last year’s exposition the single telecommunication company that joined the event was flocked with buyers because of their cellular phone plan. Meanwhile, the local government is set to approve DATE’s exemption for fees on streamers and posters as their counterpart. Councilor Peter Laviña, chair of the council’s committee on trade, commerce said the committee report on the application for exemption would be deliberated in the regular session today. Among the activities of the exposition are exhibits, business matching, and round table discussion on global opportunities, product and service presentations, raffle promo, job fair, trainings, seminars and forums. As of yesterday, 67 out of the 141 target exhibitors have confirmed to join. Among them are the First Philippines Scale, PITRADE, Atlanta Industries, GEM 2 Program, Aldevinco, Uraya, Alson’s Aquaculture, Farma Plastics, Digital CCTV, Digilution, Hubport Interactive, DAPACOR, Southern Synergy, Prime Ads, San Miguel Foods, Multi-line, Davao Synthetic and Trade Center and others. The yearly event is organized by DCCCII with the help of government agencies and members of the private sector. Their official partners this year are the Department of Trade and Industry and Department of Science and Technology, Department of Agriculture, Sagrex Corporation, King Cooperative and Davao City Water District.

This thread goes waaayyy too fast...

But won't the Maglev occupy so much space? I've seen many Maglev train stations man god, especially those in Germany (but I've never been in Germany.) It might take up some space.

Here is an article I profusely typed. This will be a long series so please bear with the long text. This was lifted from Lydia Yu-Jose's Japan Views the Philippines:

Voices from Davao

(Part one of a chapter 6 from the book JAPAN VIEWS THE PHILIPPINES by Lydia Yu-Jose)
This chapter will focus on the views of two individual Japanese, and of Okinawans in Davao. The two Japanese were Furukawa Yoshizo, founder of the Furukawa Plantation Company Incorporated (Furukawa Takushoku Kabushiki Kaisha), and Masaki Kichiemon, one of the members of the board of directors of the Ota Development Corporation, and one time president of the Davao Japanese Club. They would represent the two largest corporations in Davao, while the Okinawans, a minority group in Japan, would represent the largest Japanese group in Davao.
After an exposition of their views on their problems in Davao, reactions from Japan to these problems will be presented.

Furukawa’s Arrival in Davao

Furukawa’s arrival in Davao was not accidental, unlike that of Ota Kyousaburo, who drifted to Davao partly by fate and partly by foresight and economic necessity. Neither was his arrival similar to Kanegae’s in Manila, who reached the Philippines penniless and unsure of what his future in this foreign land would be. Ota and Kanegae typified the Japanese immigrants to the Philippines in the first decades of the twentieth century. Furukawa, on the other hand, did not have to go through uncertainties when he set foot on Davao in 1913. While Furukawa was not like the typical Japanese who came to Davao in the 1920s as he was well-educated and financially stable, he had something in common with most of them: a feeling of certainty of what their life in Davao would be.
Furukawa was born in Shiga Prefecture in 1888. By the time he was to enter college, he had been exposed to Jitsugyou no Nihon, a periodical that published articles about the nan’yo, especially its rubber cultivation. He had also been influenced by his elder brother who believed that it was better to be self-employed than to work for somebody. Under these influences, he decided to enroll at the Agricultural College of Tokyo Imperial University in 1910.
When he graduated in July 1913, he had already decided that it was in the Philippines that he would like to apply his training in agriculture. His decision was influenced by relatives and acquaintances of relatives in the Philippines. Moreover, an employee of Itou-Chuubei-Shouten in Manila, whose proprietor was a cousin of Furukawa, also suggested that he venture into Manila Hemp production. He also had a chance to meet with Ota Kyousaburo who was then vacationing in Tokyo. In addition, he had a chance to visit a hemp factory in Japan. Before coming to the Philippines, he underwent training sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for overseas worker (kaigai gyou renshuu) and on 26 November 1913, he arrived in Manila. He was met by no less than the manager of the Manila branch of Itou-Chuubei-Shouten. He lost no time in receiving instructions in Spanish from a Spanish tutor, Luis Peres.
In January 1914, he was guided to Tayabas. The following month, he took a ship for Davao. Among his fellow passengers was the wife of Ota, who was bringing with her future brides for two officers of Ota Development Corporation. In Davao, he visited the Ota Development Corporation and was guided by Ota himself, on horseback, to his abaca and coconut plantations. He proceeded to Zamboanga and saw the lumber yards of Ota. He went back to Manila in May, and returned to Japan the following month, convinced that he should come back to Davao. In November 1914, he was back in Manila. With the legal assistance of an American lawyer, he established the Furukawa Plantation, and registered its articles of incorporation on December 28.
The main office of the Furukawa plantation was in Daliaon. Its initial capital was 100,000 pesos (one peso=one yen). In 1921 it increased to 500,000 pesos. By 1925 its capital was 1,500,000 pesos and in 1941, it was 10,000,000 pesos.
Until the establishment of the Furukawa Plantation, the Ota Development Corporation had a virtual monopoly in Davao’s economy. The social life of the Japanese in Davao centered around this company. With the establishment of the Furukawa Plantation, a strong competitor was born. Furukwa, writing in the 1950s, remembered with bitterness what he considered attempts by the pioneer company to block his progress. The competition between Ota and Furukawa did not go unnoticed to Davao visitors in the 1930s and ‘40s.
The Furukawa-Ota rivalry may not be a good indication of Japanese business practices abroad, but it is a potent argument against the theory that the Japanese businessmen and laborers were advance parties of a planned military invasion of the Philippines. Rather hthe rivalry is a strong proof that the Japanese in the Philippines, even as late as the 1920s, came to the Philippines to seek their own individual economic advancement. They were not, at least not by the 1930s, fired with nationalistic motivations, nor inspired by dreams of Pan-Asianism.
Furukawa had such a strong influence on the Japanese community, as well as on the Japanese visitors who came to observed conditions ion Davao, that Consul Kaneko Toyoji, in a letter to the foreign office in 1935, complained that visitors who came to Davao tended to neglect the Consulate, and availed, instead, of Furukawa’s hospitality. They stayed in his house, ate there, and spent most of their time at the Furukawa facilities.
As a result, it was doubtful if they got a balanced view of conditions in Davao. Kaneko thus requested the Foreign office of their intention to visit, and not to go directly to the Furukawa Plantation, but rather to, drop by the Consulate with a proper introductory letter from the Foreign Office, and to allow themselves to be advised by the Davao Consul as to places to be visited, and people to be interviewed.
The Davao Land Problem

A number of laws and orders affected the Japanese in Davao, but what disturbed them most were the laws and orders that threatened their rights over the lands they were cultivating. Ota Kyousaburo first acquired a piece of land from the aboriginal Bagobo tribe in 1906. However, he was not informed that his purchase was illegal because tribal lands were public lands, and under the Public Land Act of 1903, foreign individuals had no right to own public lands. Ota did a little research and found out that the Act permitted any legally organized corporation to purchase or lease agricultural lands of the public domain up to a maximum of 1,024 hectares, leases being for twenty-fiver years and renewable for an additional twenty-five years. He solved his problem by establishing a corporation, which was granted 1,015 hectares of public land.
In 1918 a new Public Land Act was passed by the Philippine Legislature, which restricted land purchases to Filipino citizens, but it was vetoed by the United States President, as a result of the efforts of the Japanese ambassador to the United States, and out of U.S. consideration for Japan, who had been an ally in World War I. The Japanese, however, enjoying the wartime boom in hemp sales, indiscreetly displayed their wealth by conspicuous purchase of lands. This promoted the Philippine Legislature to pass for the second time a new public land act in 1919.
On 15 May 1919, the Davao Japanese Club, now wary of the new land act, sent a letter of appeal to the Japanese foreign minister. The appeal stressed that around sixty Japanese agricultural companies, and around 7,000 Japanese would be unjustly affected by the law. Its passage was considered by the Japanese as an ungrateful act on the part of the Philippine government, who seemed to forget that twenty-years earlier, Davao had been a desolate land, and its present development was due to the 7,000 hard-working Japanese, now haunted by anxiety brought about by the new land act. To avoid an economic crisis that would surely result from the enforcement of the law, it was requested that the Foreign Office intervene, so that the United States President would not approve the law.

Maayo man TJ, but I think we should build some critical areas for development. If Davao will be congested in the near future, basig ma-suffocate pod ang green belt sa pollution if possible.

Anyway, I've just read the plans of the CG from the Mindanao Business Reporter. that was way back 2002.

Flyovers? We do have the most numbers of flyovers in Mindanao. As a matter of fact, Davao City is the first (and to date, the only) City in the Southern Philippines to have its own operational vehicular underpass. Currently, the newest project by DPWH is the Ulas Flyover.

I think gibak-bakan na nila ang signage that indicated going to Calinan-Mintal. It added to the volume of the area. I think that's the site of the future Flyover.

Goshes, flyovers... That might be a problem if we might build trains, as what ProblemSolver had effaced.
