Developer gets wakeboard park clearance
DAVAO CITY -- A quick adjustment enabled 8890 Housing Development Corp., a Cebu-based property developer, to secure a permit from the Davao city council after its original plan to expand a subdivision at this city’s Mintal district was rejected for violating the zoning ordinance.
After discussions with city legislators, 8890 Housing agreed to construct only a wakeboard park instead of expanding its Deca Homes Resort Residences within a 150-hectare area classified by the city’s zoning ordinance as a light industrial zone.
The developer has in fact started laying the groundwork for the subdivision and wakeboarding facility after getting the go-signal from the City Engineer’s Office, but had to stop when told the area needed to be reclassified. On Tuesday’s regular session, city council members voted to reclassify the area into parks and recreation. That means the developer will have to abandon its plan for housing units next to the wakeboarding park.
Jesus B. Atencio, 8890 Housing president, said the initial investment for the park is about P30 million. It is projected to be the biggest wakeboarding park in the country. The developer had entered into a lease contract with Xtremewake, Inc. to build the park. A man-made lake will feature a cable ski system and cranes that will pull wakeboarders at varying speeds. -- Joel B. Escovilla
Make it the most beautiful and most visited too. I'm starting to get tired with our superlatives which are not being promoted and shared to the entire world effectively. *sigh*

Hmmmm interesting! Good job to Coed Clothing for promoting Davao through their shirts. Why not expand here in Manila? Im sure there are alot of Dabawenyos in the capital who would love to buy these shirts (or even abroad). It's another way of promoting Davao City. ;)

maayomo November 22nd, 2009, 07:07 PM Guys, I need your help. I'm coming to your city on December 4, my first time in almost three years. I worked for San Mig in Darong before, and stayed in Toril and Mintal, but I never got to know your city that much. I kinda miss it, so I decided to pay it a visit. I just realized that I spent 11 memorable months there. :)
Anyways, three-day stay lang. I'm planning to visit Eden Nature Park, among other things. Any ideas on what the other interesting places are? Also, I'm planning to stay at Marco Polo, but just in case I revamp my budget, I might end up in a, er, budget hotel, too. Hehe.:)
Please, guys. I want to impress my companion sana. :)

Victoria Plaza Mall
Victoria Plaza Mall is one of the oldest malls in Davao City. It was established in the early ninetees. A two storey yet very wide shopping center. It is knows as the biggest and widest shopping center in the entire Mindanao. Victoria Plaza caters everything that you are looking for, it includes food shops, restaurants, boutiques, a department store and supermarket, shipping and airline ticket offices, jewelry shops, movie theaters and other business centers. The choices are endless in Victoria Plaza shopping mall. The best thing about this shopping center is that, it houses a lot of boutiques and bargain stores that sells the hippest and trendiest clothing apparel of today's generation for a very cheap price.
Chimes Mall
Chimes Mall, a little mall found in the heart of the city's Chinatown. It is known as a specialty mall that houses power brands and special luxury items that cannot be found in the mainstream malls of Davao City. Chimes mall is the counterpart of Rustan in Makati with the regards to the brands being advertised. Alongside, you will see different dining experiences since it is the headquarter of famous restobars like Figaro, Banana Leaf and the likes of it. Chimes is the best place to go if you want to avoid the stereotype business of shopping malls. It is a boxy type mall with a quiet ambiance.
Aldevinco
The largest marketplace for local handicrafts – the Aldevinco, is a must stop for your needs. In truth, despite the existence of many stores selling locally crafted products, many tourists still visit Aldevinco since it is the one-stop shop for antiques, batik, brass wares, sarongs, pearls and other handmade products. It is actually a mini-mall with numerous stalls. What is great about this establishment is that you can haggle for the best price. The better you are at haggling, the more shopping money you will save.

davaoeagle November 23rd, 2009, 08:46 AM Duterte’s call to GMA
hastens arrival of donations
Mindanao Daily Mirror
November 23, 2209
The call of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has led to the speedy arrival of the United states-donated orthopedic equipment at the Davao Medical Center (DMC).
The development elated the DMC physicians and consultants who have complained over the delay on the shipment of the donations.
They blamed the Bureau of Customs for the delay.
Last week, Duterte went to the DMC to visit soldiers wounded in an encounter in Compostela Valley province.
Duterte’s visit gave DMC consultant Dr. Ronald Tajente the chance to tell him about the delay of the orthopedic equipment donated by a DMC network based in the United States.
Duterte then called up Mrs. Arroyo and told her about the problem.
The following day, the equipment arrived at the DMC.
Duterte had announced the said development in yesterday’s Gikan sa Masa Para sa Masa, a television program of the city government.
“I was so amazed the mayor called up the President at 4 p.m. and first flight the following day it was delivered to us. Without the mayor’s intervention the delay could have been longer at the expense of our patients,” Tajente said.
Since 2002, the DMC orthopedic department is receiving surgical implants, which are donated by a group of professionals called Surgical Implant Network based in the United States, he said.
The group donated external fixators and kneelers for healing bone injuries to orthopedic patients.
He said the shipment has been doing well since 2002.
But starting this year, the Bureau of Customs (BOC) in Manila has been asking numerous documents delaying the arrival of the equipment.
Tajente said the BOC asked for a certificate from the Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD)-Philippines, when it was the Bureau of Food and Drugs in the US that approved the implants.
DMC physician, Dr. Brian Demanuel for his part said, external fixator would cost P100,000, while kneelers cost P35,000.
“With our donor, we pay nothing. All we need to do is show our records that said patient receive their donation,” he said.
PFC Danny Marungan of the Philippine Army, a beneficiary of the external fixator deplored over the BOC’s deed.
“Dapat dili na i hold sa customs kay kaming mga pasyente ang maglisod, maayo nalang gani nagtawag si Mayor Duterte kay President Arroyo (The Customs should not hold it because we the patients are the ones who are burdened. It’s good that Mayor Duterte called up President Arroyo),” Marungan said.

Davao mayor backs gay group’s party-list bid
By Jeffrey M. Tupas
Inquirer Mindanao
Posted date: November 23, 2009
DAVAO CITY, Philippines—The intention of Ang Ladlad, the political party representing gays, lesbians, and transsexuals, to join the elections through the party-list system is being supported by this city’s tough-talking mayor Rodrigo Duterte.
Duterte has expressed support for Ang Ladlad’s bid for accreditation, saying Election Commissioner Nicodemo Ferrer’s justification for excluding the gay organization was a form of “bigotry to the highest order.”
He said the group must bring its case before the Supreme Court and said he would have offered his legal services for free, had he been a practicing lawyer.
“I’m very much willing to handle a case to be filed before the Supreme Court. I think they should go to the SC and seek a ruling there. You (Ferrer) are lucky because I would have been the first one to lead protests actions against you had I been gay…and what if I am gay? Is that a problem?” said Duterte during his weekly television program “Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa.”
Ferrer, who heads the Comelec second division, said Ang Ladlad party has been advocating “immoral doctrines,” including “intimate and sexual relations with individuals of a different gender, of the same gender or more than one gender.”
“The advocacy for intimate sexual relations reflected that petitioner [Ang Ladlad] tolerates immorality, which offends religious beliefs. This petition is dismissible on moral grounds,” Ferrer said.
But Duterte countered this.
“That statement is bigotry to the highest order. You cannot deny representation of any group. Who are you to deny them? That’s showing your prejudice against them. If Filipinos want to fill Congress with gays, so be it,” he said.
He said gays, who have proven their worth in a discriminating society, must not be judged because of their sexual preference.
“For as long they have the capability to lead…And this world needs gays. Look, when your wives need to look beautiful, they run to gays for help,” he said.
He said the decision of Ferrer might affect how the government would treat gays.
“That’s not a good policy of the government. That cannot be. That (the right of Ang Ladlad to seek representation in Congress) is embodied in the freedom of expression,” Duterte said.
Danton Remoto, one of the ranking officials of Ang Ladlad, has called the Comelec 2nd division ruling a violation of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights and the International Convention on Civil and Political Rights, which states that “the ideal of free human beings enjoying civil and political freedom and freedom from fear and want can only be achieved if conditions are created whereby everyone may enjoy his civil and political rights, as well as his economic, social, and cultural rights.”

Chimes Mall
Naa gina construct na CHIMES dnh sa GENSAN!

Philippine Daily Inquirer

ASIAWIDE REFRESHMENTS Corp., the licensed bottler of RC Cola in the country, has put up a new bottling plant in Mindanao worth P1 billion.
This, according to the company, is aimed at ensuring the supply of RC Cola specifically in Davao and General Santos.
ARC executive vice president and COO Gerardo Garcia said the company had established a state-of-the-art bottling plant in Davao City to capture a wider range of consumers.
Garcia said the prices of cola drinks in Mindanao region were higher than the prevailing prices in many parts of the country. “One of the goals in putting up a plant in the area is to be closer to the market we cater to. This way, we would be able to provide Davaoeños with a refreshing drink that they can easily afford,” he added.
He said three months before ARC’s plant was set up in Davao, other cola brands began selling at lower prices, or at least at par with current prices in Manila.

Eevee wins in Nescafe 3n1 Soundskool 2009Davao-based college band Eevee bagged the grand prize in this year’s NESCAFÉ 3in1 Soundskool. The competition capped off its fifth successful year with a full concert featuring the lucky 13 NESCAFÉ 3in1 Soundskool finalists, as well as some of the country’s best musical acts at the Ninoy Aquino Sports Stadium. EeveeRepresenting the Philippine Women’s College of Davao, Eevee bested out 12 of the best college bands from across the country during the Finals night. This year’s finalist bands that performed at the Ninoy Aquino Sports Stadium this year are: Little School House (Ateneo de Cagayan – Xavier University), Eevee (Philippine Women’s College – Davao), Disco…Disco…Disco (St. Michael’s College – Iligan City), Lady Suzette (AMA – Tacloban), Sundae Special (Iloilo Doctors College), 3 Hours and 10 (University of the Visayas – Cebu), Iktuz (Colegio de San Juan De Letran Calamba – Calamba Laguna), Mixed Tape (Lyceum – St. Cabrini College of Allied Medicine – Batangas), In Descent (University of Perpetual Help Laguna – Binan Laguna), Nameless Heroes (Mapua Institute of Technology – Makati), Play (Polytechnic University of the Philippines – Quezon City), Soltera (AMA – International Institute of Technology – Cubao) and Project (Jose Rizal University).
Enzo Villegas“We are very overwhelmed with this victory. All the bands that were with us on our ‘journey to fame’ were really good and it was anybody’s game up until show time. We would like to thank NESCAFÉ 3in1 Soundskool for this opportunity for us to realize our dreams as music superstars,” exclaimed Eevee’s frontman, Enzo Villegas.
The NESCAFÉ 3in1 Soundskool finalists performed alongside some of the country’s best bands who served as the finalists’ mentors leading up to the Grand Finals Night. The young musicians got to interact, jam and perform alongside chart toppers like NESCAFÉ 3in1 Soundskool Grand Prize Winners Hilera and Letter Day Story, 6CycleMind, Pedicab, Itchy Worms, Imago, Sugarfree, Taken By Cars, Urbandub, Spongecola, Paraluman, Callalily, Sandwich and Moonstar 88. Known dance group Philippine All Stars brought the audience to their feet with their performances. Eevee: Gusto ko lang ng girlfriend Another rare sight during the NESCAFÉ 3in1 Soundskool Grand Finals Night was when all the vocalists from this year’s mentor bands banded together and shared the stage for one outstanding performance. “It didn’t feel like a competition at all during the Grand Finals Night. Yes, we were nervous but in the end the entire night became a celebration of how much the Filipino youth loves music. We’re really proud to be part of this experience — winning the Grand Prize was just the cherry on top of the delicious cake,” Villegas added.
Eevee & Pedicab“NESCAFÉ 3in1 Soundskool’s fifth year has proven to be its most exciting so far. We not only found extraordinary talents this year — the competition has never been this close among the finalists. We’re very proud to see the progress all the finalists have made ever since we saw them during the Eliminations leg in October. Eevee, along with the other 12 finalists this year, have all shown that handa na silang sumikat with the lessons they gained from NESCAFÉ 3in1 Soundskool. If anything, the talent we discovered with this year’s competition only proves that the Filipino youth are indeed ready to make a big splash in the music industry,” said Eileen Rose Bangcoro, NESTLÉ Philippines marketing promotions and events cluster head for NESCAFÉ.
Aside from Bangcoro, the judges during the Grand Finals Night were Sony Music Entertainment Philippines’ Vic Valenciano and Jerrick Mina, Soupstar Entertainment’s Darwin Hernandez, and Soundcreation Studio’s Shinji Tanaka.

lgseccionph November 24th, 2009, 07:43 AM North-South Mindanao Expressway pushed
Davao City (24 November) -- A Northern to Southern Mindanao link—a main corridor like a Davao-Cagayan expressway—that would enable greater mobility of goods and people is now being pushed by Mindanao logistics and infrastructure industry players.
"We would like to sell the idea of an integrated logistics highway or corridor; one that would connect Northern and Southern Mindanao, two big economic centers in the region, that will propel Mindanao's socio-economic development," said Mr. Vic Lagdamen, president of the Mindanao Federation of Shippers' Association (MINFESA).
The said proposal will be presented to the government during the first Mindanao Logistics Conference this week November 25 to 26 in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental with the theme: "Southern-Northern Mindanao Logictics Corridor: Key to Fast Track its Economic Development."
Lagdamen, who spearheaded the conference's regional consultation here recently, said that the "expressway" would not necessarily be the one passing through the current national highway, as long as it will "facilitate for a faster movement of goods and people".
He also said that while the Northern-Mindanao link is being pushed as a main corridor, the proposed integrated logistics and transportation plan should also include the Zamboanga, Caraga and other regions in Mindanao.
Mindanao is yet to have an integrated logistics and transportation plan, he said.
He said that the plan should figure significantly with the recent infrastructure boost in Mindanao, wherein major infrastructure were recently built like the Mindanao Container Terminal, along with the expansion of seaports and airports, and improvement of national roads.
"It is high time for Mindanao to have something like a logistics corridor given that infrastructure development in Mindanao is being fast tracked, and most especially since MEDCo is now currently formulating the Mindanao 2020 Peace and Development Framework Plan," said Usec. Virgilio Leyretana, chairman of the Mindanao Economic Development Council (MEDCo).
Infrastructures are the arteries for progress, they provide access to economic opportunities for the depressed and vulnerable rural communities by opening new areas for economic development and linking the production areas with the urban centers and market, he said.
"The shift to logistics infrastructure should be a more comprehensive approach in tackling the overall logistics needs of Mindanao," Lagdamen said, noting that the cold chain and banana industries will also be among focus topics.
A "banana logistics corridor in Mindanao" has been identified as one of the topics in the two-day conference. Banana exports continued to remain the top 2 Mindanao export raking in US$456.11 million in 2008, a 16.12 percent increase from 2007's US$392.8 million, according to MEDCo data.
The conference also had its consultations in Cagayan de Oro and Zamboanga that will gather sectoral issues and concerns and will be presented in the conference.
Lagdamen said that they will not only forward the conference resolutions to concerned agencies like the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) but to aspiring presidential candidates saying that "the new administration should already have a buy-in into the idea".
Some international players like foreign shipping industries are also expected to attend the 200-strong delegation of shippers, shipping lines, cargo forwarders, service providers, and representatives from private sector and government agencies.
The port director of the Muara Port in Brunei Darussalam is also expected to be one of the conference speakers which would highlight port and infrastructure development thrust in the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) sub-regional cooperation, Lagdamen said.
"Luzon is ahead of us in planning its own integrated logistics corridor and building expressways, interconnecting its ports and airports. It is high time for Mindanao to plan its own future and face the global challenge," a statement from the conference brochure says. (MEDCo) [pia]

renovation of Davao, Cebu hotels
Mindanao Daily Mirror
November 25, 2009
CEBU CITY (PNA) – Philippine hotel chain Waterfront Philippines Inc. (WPI) will infuse P800 million to fund the renovation projects of three of its five hotels next year as part of the hotels’ regular maintenance activities, a senior official said.
WPI chair Renato Magadia said P450 million will be for the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino (WCCHC) and P200 million for the Waterfront Airport Hotel and Casino (WAHC) near the Mactan-Cebu International airport in Lapu-Lapu City.
The remaining P150 million will be spent on renovation works for the Waterfront Insular Hotel Davao, Magadia said.
WPI held its annual stockholders’ meeting over the weekend.
“We felt that it is also the right time to enhance our hotels with the competition coming from the new hotels,” he added.
WPI president Kenneth Gatchalian also said the planned renovation of the hotels will be done in several phases covering a period of at least one year.
It will include a facelift of hotel rooms and improvement on its facilities, he said.
WPI approved a request from the board for the parent company to extend a total aggregate amount of P2 billion for the renovation efforts.
Part of the budget will also be applied to an outstanding loan that has a value of P836 million upon maturity on February 2010.
Aside from this, WPI also approved a board resolution from WCCHC to convert P600 million worth cash advances into common shares.
During the stockholders’ meeting, Magadia reported to shareholders that 2008 was considered “one of the most challenging years of the industry.”
“The global economic crunch came rather unexpectedly and it has brought with it the obvious implications for international travel, tourist spending and leisure spending in general,” he said.
In the middle part of 2008, Magadia said the company “braced for tough times” and the outlook turned from positive to conservative.
“We have done all that is necessary to keep our business steady. We are continuously streamlining our operations, implementing necessary austerity measures and always enhancing our processes in order to serve our customers efficiently and cost effectively,” he said.

Pedia onco docs nat’l conference
Mindanao Daily Mirror
November 25, 2009
The Philippine Society of Pediatric Oncology in collaboration with Davao Children’s Cancer Fund, Inc. and Davao Medical Center Department of Pediatrics held its third national conference with this year’s theme “Childhood Cancer: The Anatomy and Physiology of Hope” last November 20 at Grand Regal Hotel in Davao City.
PSPO president Dr. Ma. Beatriz “Bea” Gepte informed the participants who are mostly doctors specializing in pediatric oncology and some nurses as well that the national conference aims to increase the awareness on childhood cancer aside from being its continuing medical education.
Gepte emphasized the need to get early treatment for the survival of cancer patients especially children.
Pediatric oncologist Dr. Mae Dolendo said there is an anatomy and physiology of hope for these cancer kids. The hope includes the moral support given by several partner agencies, medical colleagues, friends, and her family as well. As a result, there were some improvements going on in the services given to cancer patients.
Dolendo said child-hood cancer is curative. However, in our country particularly in Davao City or at Davao Medical Center it remains a struggle for both the cancer patients and the concerned families. Despite that, she still hopes for a Pediatric Center in Mindanao to be established soon.

In the book, there are five nations. Luzon, Cordillera, Visayas, Mindanao and Bangsamoro. The moro side of Mindanao will be a separate nation. Of course, there is still the question whether the moros will claim the rest of Mindanao as theirs. Perhaps not, if they're happy on their own side of the island. Nevertheless, I think there perhaps is no lasting solution to conflict there except until they really get a country of their own.

As for the Bangsamoro country, they will be hardpressed in developing / improving their local economy once they no longer receive pork barrel from a national government. I think in the end they will have to think for the best of their constituents because there will be nothing left for them to feed on if their people are poor.

A country of their own with enough resources for self-sustenance. Otherwise, lack of resources on their side would just give them a good excuse to expand their territory through belligerency.

national (or federal law) will be kept to a minimum, such as only those that concern national interest. everything else will be under the state. there is no universal rule on how to divide this. the lines will be drawn once the proposal is approved.

Having a separate Mindanao Republic may be ideal. But we have to consider the culture of the people populating the island to determine whether the ideal is also the correct thing to do.

jogavilz November 25th, 2009, 11:55 AM ^^speaking of traffic violations..... i guess the enforcers may be also afraid because by looking at their license plate, they can tell where these people come from. one time, nakasakay ako sa surplus na SUV ng tito, then kalit nag red light, gipalusot na lang sa traffic aid kay "M" man ang first letter sa license plate.

knowing De Lima the commissioner of CHR (Criminal's Human Rights), her statement should be "PLEASE RESPECT THE RIGHTS OF MAYOR AMPATUAN AND COMPANY!, Human kasi sila eh."
at tulad ng nangyari dito sa davao (na kinalimutan nya ang katarantaduhan na pinaggagawa ng mga rapist, drug dealers, etc), kakalimutan din nya ang 40+ bodies na minasaker sa maguindanao in exchange of the rights of the criminals. kumbaga, CRIMINAL'S RIGHTS first, yan si DE LIMA bow. sorry po, pilipino lang.

For some years now I’ve been following a rather sedentary lifestyle, due mostly to my blogging and Internet-based involvements. I do get to go out and meet people a lot — and I’ve been busy with a couple of major events — but I’ve not been engaging in truly active stuff lately. It’s a wonder my midsection hasn’t flared out on me yet…
Since a couple of weeks ago, however, I’ve been itching to go out and stretch my limbs, limber up and flex some muscles. I’m not talking about exercise, though (although that, too, is climbing up my list of priorities). The outdoors! The beaches that are less than an hour away from where I live, the mountains that are accessible to me anytime I wished to be there.
Coleman tent and Habagat ruck sackSo that’s why I found myself acquiring a backpacker’s tent recently, and a mountaineer’s ruck sack as well. When I was in Makati last week, I saw some cool tents at a Coleman shop, and they were on sale! The one I got is a solo tent that’s aerodynamic and lightweight, and promises to be watertight. Can’t wait to field test it!
Then this afternoon, back in Davao, I walked into a Habagat shop at Matina Town Square to get myself my first Habagat bag. I was part of a mountaineering club back in the ’90s, but the packs I had then weren’t made by this Proudly-Filipino manufacturer. You gotta love their tagline: “Built by Hand. Tested by Nature.”
Now that I have the gear and the will to get down and dirty again after all these years, I’m going to head out to Samal Island for a trek and an overnight on the beach. Then maybe a hop to the mountainside to commune with the trees. This weekend, most probably.

Rubber training center in Marilog inaugurated
Wednesday, November 25, 2009
FIVE years or more from now, the hilly cogonal lands of Marahan, Marilog District, Davao City might be dotted with mature stand of rubber trees.
That is, if the indigenous people of the area will adopt the rubber-based farming system showcased at the Department of Agriculture XI's Regional Integrated Agricultural Research Center (RIARC) for Hilly Land Integrated Farming System located in this locality.
During the recent inaugural blessing of the Regional Rubber Training Center at RIARC, which was funded under DA's High Value Commercial Crops Program (HVCC), DA regional executive director Carlos B. Mendoza appealed to the Manobo and Matigsalog tribes who inhabit these ancestral lands to plant permanent crops such as rubber, as these could give a bigger income as well as control soil erosion which is the number one problem in hilly areas.
City Agriculturist Rocelio Tabay likewise stressed the importance of adoption of proper cultivation technology in the hilly lands in order to attain not only bigger yield but more importantly to achieve sustainable production in these marginal areas.
"Rubber farming is a relatively new enterprise in the Davao Region, and through this training center we had just inaugurated, we hope to train interested farmers on the basic techniques of growing this commodity," Mendoza said, adding that aside from serving as training venue for rubber technologies, RIARC in Marahan will also serve as destination point for field tours for individuals or groups of farmers who are interested in seeing various aspects of rubber cultivation.
Prior to the inauguration, planting of several hills of rubber tree was also conducted within the RIARC area as DA-XI's way of celebrating the Global Warming Consciousness Week.

Real estate firm launches Villa Azalea's 'bahay kubo'
Wednesday, November 25, 2009
By Carlo P. Mallo
ONE of the features of the Filipinos ingenuity in the field of architecture is the "bahay kubo."
Now in the new millennium, a local developer is reviving the icon of Filipino architecture in his latest real estate development.
Launched Sunday was the model unit of Villa Azalea, a housing project of Mountain Haven, Inc., located in the thriving area of Ma-a, which sits on the border of the city's business district.
"This is the bahay kubo of the new millennium, our modern take on the icon of Filipino architecture," Martin Pineda, president of Mountain Haven Inc., told Sun.Star Davao in an interview during the launch.
Multi-awarded architect John David O'Yek, who designed the units, explained that not only the houses were designed with the concept of the "bahay kubo" in mind.
"It is maaliwalas, maliwanag, and mahangin," O'Yek said.
The middle size housing units of Villa Azalea have an estimated total floor area of about 70 square meters but is able to hold three bedrooms, three toilets and bath, a maids quarter, a garage, a secluded laundry and clothesline area.
"This is a step towards sustainable living, we tap the potentials of nature using natural light, ventilation, and the houses are compact and complete," O'Yek said.

Home away from home
Wednesday, November 25, 2009
By Henrylito D. Tacio
EVERYONE loves to travel -- whether for business, pleasure, or for the sake of travel. As we are evanescent in a place, we generally stay in any of the following: inn, lodge, hostel, or hotel. As we lay down, we think of our home we left behind.
There's no place like home. Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. puts it aptly when he wrote in Homesick in Heaven: "Where we love is home; home that our feet may leave, but not our hearts."
Famous English author Charles Dickens agrees. "Home is a name, a word, it is a strong one; stronger than magician ever spoke, or spirit ever answered to, in the strongest conjuration," he pointed out.
With this in mind, Pedro Anino and his wife Ester built the three-storey La Anclar Hometel at Bonifacio Street near the University of Immaculate Conception.
"We established a dormitory three years ago and there were so many inquiries from our guests and also those staying as transient," recalls Jocelyn A. Talania, the general manager. "That's why we put up this establishment right beside the dormitory."
The Aninos (Pedro is from Zamboanga del Norte while Ester was born in Norala, South Cotabato) came to Davao in the 1970s and decided to stay in the city for good.
"Davao is very peaceful (compared to other cities we have been to)," the couple explained. "We found the city as a good place to invest our time and money."
On why building another hotel in Davao when there are already a lot of well-known hotels, Talania answers. "Our service and amenities are the same as those you will have when you stay in luxury hotels. I think our hotel is an alternative to those expensive hotels."
What makes La Anclar differ from other hotels in the city? "For one, it has this homey feeling," Talania says. "Of course, it is easy to get to as the place is within the heart of the city."
True enough. Claveria Street is just a walking distance away. Below the hotel, there are offices and restaurants. Not only that, hospitals, banks, and some government offices are within reach.
If you never heard of La Anclar it's because it has just opened recently, last August 8 to be exact. Currently, it has 22 rooms and expansion is going on. A single standard good for one person costs P650 per night but if you want a single standard with bigger floor area just add P150 to the original rate. The charge for double deluxe (with two beds) is P1,200 per night (the same price for one big matrimonial bed).
A family room (one matrimonial bed and one single bed with one pull-out bed) costs P1,500 per night while a junior suite room (bigger floor area with coffee table, one big bed and one single standard bed) is P1,800.
The prices don't include yet the service charge, which is 10 percent of the price.
Aside from room accommodations where one can stay, La Anclar is also a good place for live in and live out seminars, weddings, birthday parties, and conferences.
"Our function hall has the capacity for 100 to 150 people, or 200 if theater type sitting arrangement is employed."
Hungry and want to eat right something? You don't have to go further. Its 28-year-old chef, Gene Talania, prepares homestyle Filipino delicacies, which are delivered right into your room. Just tell him what you want, and he will cook it for you. "Our food selection is varied," Talania said.
The name La Anclar is chic, unique, and sound very foreign. Actually, it is derived from the names of the owner's grandchildren. La comes from Lance while An from Andrea and Clar from Clarisse.
Talania urges, "Stay at La Anclar Hometel where comfort comes first with amenities and services just the way you want it, at less cost. We have also friendly crews and staff."
The words of Lemony Snicket comes to mind: "One's home is like a delicious piece of pie you order in a restaurant on a country road one cozy evening -- the best piece of pie you have ever eaten in your life - and can never find again. After you leave home, you may find yourself feeling homesick, even if you have a new home that has nicer wallpaper and a more efficient dishwasher than the home in which you grew up."
For inquiries and accommodations, please call any of these numbers: 305.5115 and 224.2373. If you are not from Davao, dial 082 first. For those from other countries, dial 6382 first and then the phone numbers. Its website is still under construction: www.laanclarhometel.com

DAVAO CITY—The Malaysian agency managing its countrywide septage treatment promised to visit this city to look at how it can install a working treatment facility in Malaysia, a city councilor here said.
Experts from the Kuala Lumpur-based In The Water Consortium (IWC) said they would visit this city of 1.3 million residents on Dec. 2 “to go around and look at the current septage situation in the city and assist us in coming up with a septage-management plan for the city.”
The IWC volunteered to help the city after city councilor Leonardo Avila III presented the ordinance he authored to work up the septage management of the city. Avila told the BusinessMirror on Sunday that the IWC said the city council move on coming up with a septage management “was their experience 15 years ago when it was also starting to come up with managing its own solid-waste disposal.”
“Now that they have a better septage management, they said they wanted to help also, especially that they have now an agreement with the Davao City Water District [DCWD], on exchange of technical knowledge as well as providing more training for DCWD,” he said.
Davao City has no existing septage management, Avila said, relying mainly on independent and small companies offering to declog and empty the individual septic tanks of houses. At the height of the uproar about five years ago over television footage of septage trucks unloading the sludge into manholes and open canals, Avila said the companies were forced to present their own ponds or catchment area where they were supposed to unload and treat the sludge they siphon from the households.
“But we have not really systematized or seriously monitored if they really used these ponds at all,” he said. --

Written by: Garcia , Ian C.
Thursday, 26 November 2009
FOR many years, people widely accepted the using and wearing of shoes, belts, bags and wallets made from crocodile leather. It is recently that, here in Davao, we have accepted the practice of making use of crocodile meat as food.
Last weekend, after previously trying out various crocodile meat fares at Davao Crocodile Park’s Riverwalk Grill and Cafe El Gato (such as sisig, pasta, barbecue, and even a crocodile Creole dish), we were lucky to be the first – not just in Mindanao but in the entire country - to sample “Lechon na Buwaya,” or as Chef Dino Dizon christened it, “Nilasing na Buwaya” at Rizal Promenade.
Chef Dino, executive chef of Cafe El Gato and a graduate of the California Culinary Academy, named the grilled dish as such as the six-foot skinned reptile was washed and drowned overnight with bottles of beer as well as various locally sourced herbs and spices.
While the other ingredients can easily be bought from your neighborhood palengke, it is the meat that can be difficult to obtain and acquire permit for slaughtering and cooking.
“You need to get certification from the Crocodile Farming Institute in Puerto Princesa, Palawan,” shared to us by Davao Crocodile Park’s very own Crocodile Dundee, Ian Evangelista. Every time they slaughter a crocodile, even if they breed them in their own farm, they have to procure a permit from the CFI.
The Crocodile Farming Institute, established jointly by the Philippine and Japanese governments in 1987, is an authority in Philippine crocodiles that aims to conserve and to develop a suitable crocodile farming technology for two endangered species of crocodiles in the Philippines, the Crocodylus mindorensis and Crocodylus porosus.
In many countries, crocodile is considered livestock (such as poultry and swine), growing them in farms in order to make use of their meat as food and their skin for various byproducts. In Australia and in the southern coasts of USA, they even pre-pack crocodile meat and sell them in the groceries and butcher shops.
Since these reptiles, known to have been around for more than 200 million years and are the lone survivors of the Dinosaur Age, are raised in farms, their diets are stringently restricted and their environs are properly maintained, making them fit for human consumption. It is also said to be good for those with asthma and hypertension.
According to Chef Dino, the number of calories from fat and the low amount of saturated fat, along with the high protein and low carbohydrate ratio, suggests that crocodile is a healthful meat product. It is even considered to be healthier than chicken, especially when it comes to cholesterol and fat content.
But it is in the cooking that will test one’s patience as one needs to wait patiently for at least 4-5 hours to grill the crocodile on spitfire. Indeed, patience is indeed a virtue, and those who waited were rewarded with mouthwatering slivers of tender crocodile meat.
While waiting for our lechon, Chef Dino did another crocodile recipe, Crocodile Fingers, a reptilian version of Buffalo Wings sans the peppery sauce but equally scrumptious.
And what does crocodile meat tastes like? Well, personally, I think that the meat’s texture and flavor is a combination of chicken, rabbit, fish and, yes, crab meat. Although some say that its meat has actually no distinct taste that is why chefs find it effortless to play with different recipes and mix with various ingredients.
As to when the next grilling of “Lechon na Buwaya” will be, nobody knows yet. While waiting, you can troop to Riverwalk Grill and Café El Gato for their other croco-licious crocodile dishes.

I've always had a penchant for Italian cooking. And if only I had better skills in the kitchen, I'd probably spend most of my time whipping up these delicious Italian recipes myself at home. But since mine's an unfortunate case, it is a good thing that there are a few restaurants here in
Top Italian Restaurants in Davao City, Philippines
Neighborhood: Downtown Davao
Davao City that serve up quite delectable and authentic Italian dishes for an Italian food tripper like me to enjoy.
While I do have a wide array of food preference, Italian cuisine has been on top of my list. I could probably eat them in a week before I grow sick of them. lol But I was dead serious about trying out some of those recipes when I see Giada de Laurentiis prepare them on her "Everyday Italian" show on Food Network that I just had to kick my butt out of the couch and go somewhere I can have my fill on.From what I've tried so far, there are two Italian restaurants that I would recommend to try if you're from, or in, Davao.
First, Picobello is one of the first Italian restaurants in Davao City. Located at the 5th floor of Gaisano South Citimall, it serves up a cozy area where you can delight in your Italian food cravings. One of the best aspects about their menu is that they offer a lot of choices in pizza, antipasta, pasta dishes, and the main course. Their classic lasagna was very rich in fresh tomato sauce, while their serving of Mozarella & Pepperoni pizza was quite humongous. When my boyfriend and I ordered these two off the menu, we thought it was going to be a heavy snack but as it turns out, we had trouble finishing the entire meal - me being the first one to say, "I'm done."
I also tried tiramisu for dessert, costing around P95. And I tell you, it was the best way to end my Italian meal. It has that rich bittersweet taste that I like and I think I shared none of that to Ed, poor him. (sorry, no photo for the dishes. i was too caught up with the food that I completely forgot to take some. )
Next up, Salutti. I never really found out about this restaurant until Tiara, a former colleague at UP and fellow Italian food fanatic, shared it to me.
And so one day after work, I told Ed to try it out for ourselves. It is located in Habana Compound in Rizal St., if you are unfamiliar with Salutti. It has a very homey ambiance, plus you have the option to dine al fresco. But we opted to dine inside since the restaurants' white walls
Top Italian Restaurants in Davao City, Philippines
Ed chose to order Asian Beef Panini and I opted for Fettuccine Alfredo with Garlic Sauce and Shiitake Mushrooms. Again, my stomach was unable to finish the entire plate of my pasta and so I had to switch plates with Ed. I tried a little of the Asian Beef Panini, and god was it good! He chose the mango sauce for the salad that came along with his order and it really blended quite well with the crunchy lettuce and all the other veggies that was in there. Plus, service was good. By good, I mean better than that of Picobello's.
But if these restaurants were to be rated only for their food, then both are definite winners. If you haven't tried any of these, then make sure you do one of these days. Happy eating!

Peng Hok November 28th, 2009, 12:12 AM Still a better year for city: chamber
By Carlo P. Mallo
DESPITE the global financial crisis experienced by major economies at the start of this year and well into the middle of it, the year 2009 remains relatively a better year for businesses in Davao City, according to the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Incorporated (DCCCII).
"The year is not bad at all for business, it could have been worst," Simeon Marfori, DCCCII president, told Sun.Star Davao in an interview Monday. "The local economy weathered the crisis well."
A prosperous new year is also being looked forward to by the business chamber president, who said that 2010 will be a "better" year for business considering that economic recovery has started as early as middle of 2009.
A World Bank report last month showed that economies in East Asia and Pacific region, including the Philippines, are doing a swift rebound from the global financial crisis that struck late 2008.
The World Bank projected that the real gross domestic product growth in the region will slow down to a 6.7 percent for this year compared to the eight percent growth experienced in 2008.
"Also we will be having the elections in May, but the effects of the rebound will be felt around the 3rd quarter of the year," Marfori said.
The good performance of the city's economy in 2009, Marfori said, only shows how resilient the local economy is.
"With a growing population, natural resources at hand, and a rural-urban setting while enjoying the same benefits that a fully developed city has, it's no wonder that companies are moving to Davao City," Marfori added.
Over the past few months, several multi-national firms and foreign investors have set their eyes on Davao City and its neighboring provinces as its next area of expansion.
"Life in the city is good and has been good despite the crisis," Marfori said.

Peng Hok November 28th, 2009, 12:15 AM Tourism chief: Davao remains a safe place to visit
STAKEHOLDERS in the tourism sector are hoping fervently that the government takes an expeditious and concrete step in what has been dubbed as the Maguindanao massacre, lest the industry suffer irreparable damage.
Davao City Tourism chief Rizal Giovanni Aportadera told Sun.Star Davao in an interview that what could happen next is that travel advisories will be issued by the various embassies on travel to Mindanao.
As of Thursday, no travel advisory has been issued in relation to the massacre of almost 60 people in Maguindanao province.
Tourism Secretary Ace Durano, meanwhile, assured that Davao City remains to be a safe place to visit.
In its official travel advisory issued Thursday, the Tourism chief has assured that the Philippines remain to be on business as usual mode amid the tragic incident.
Durano assured stakeholders of the tourism industry that the country is still an ideal destination for tourism activities, business meetings and conferences.
The directive of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, putting central Mindanao under state of emergency, includes appointment of authorities from the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on full alert to prevent any untoward incidences in the said areas.
"The incident is isolated and confined in the three areas, and do not involve tourism spots frequented by travelers," Durano said.
Durano added that the country's major tourist destinations such as Boracay, Palawan, Cebu, and Davao City, among others, remain safe and open for foreign and local visitors.
He enjoined members of the travel and tourism industry in avoiding confusion in the country by providing accurate and up-to-date advisories to both the Filipino public and international guests.
"The incident in Maguindanao is an isolated case and should not hamper the tourism promotion activities of the government," Durano said. (CPM)

THE Manila Economic and Cultural Office (Meco) in Taipei is now bidding to make Philippine destinations as the favorite beach-wedding locations for Taiwanese couples ahead of Hawaii.
Ireneo Reyes, Meco director for tourism, said his office will aggressively promote Boracay, Palawan, Cebu, Davao, and other island and coastal areas in the Philippines to Taiwanese tourists as alternative to Hawaii.
“The beauty of our beaches remains one of our major draws for Taiwanese. Many couples looking to get married abroad do so in Hawaii , but Philippine beaches can more than hold their own, especially when cost is factored in,” Reyes said.
.......
The Taiwanese also showed interest in dive sites, golf and Filipino schools offering the English language program.
........
In the first three quarters of the year, the number of Taiwanese visitors to the Philippines declined by 14 percent to only 77,126, from 90,104 in the same period last year.
