SiliconGulf January 28th, 2010, 07:20 AM Davao City to bid for Mice in 2012
Thursday, January 28, 2010
TOURISM players in Davao City have expressed interest to bid for the Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions (Mice) Congress in 2012 for it to be staged in the city.
Coming in full force, the tourism players headed by Davao Tourism Association president Gene Bangayan, Davao City Council Committee on Tourism chair Susabel Reta, and Marco Polo Executive Assistant Manager Art Boncato Jr. launched Wednesday their logo and audio visual presentation for their bid to host Mice Congress in 2012.

The congress is an annual event attended by over 600 participants representing corporations and multinational firms that are on the search for destinations for their own employees.
It will be staged in Subic this year and in Cebu City in 2011. General Santos City and Camarines Sur are also bidding for it.
"Globally, it is a $300 billion market. And we want to tap that," Bangayan said during the Club 888 forum at Marco Polo Davao Wednesday.
Despite the relatively small delegation for the Mice Congress, Mary Ann Montemayor, a frontrunner in the tourism private sector, said the event is primarily attended by the upscale market.
"It is corporate driven market that is buffered from the crisis," Montemayor said. "And Davao is capable and prepared for it now."
Official records from the City Tourism Office show that the city has only about 2,700 beds, including those in motorist hotels.
"With only about 500 to 600 attendees, we are confident that we have the hotel rooms and the convention venue for that," Montemayor said.
Other players include the members of Small Hotels Association of Davao, Hotel Sales Marketing Association, Davao Travel Agencies Association, Davao Association of Tour Operators, Davao Cooperative Center for Visitors and Conventions, and the National Association for Independent Travel Agencies. lgseccionph January 28th, 2010, 08:07 AM Davao tourism players working hard to host MICE confab in 2010
DAVAO CITY, Jan. 28 (PNA) – Davao City tourism players are working hard to bid for Davao City’s hosting of the MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions) conference in 2012.
Davao Tourism Association (DATA) president Gene Bangayan said a team composed of top tourism players in the city will attend the MICE Convention in Subic on February 4 to 7 to make a strong impression on the country’s tourism industry.
Bangayan said the efforts will enable the city to make a stronger bid to host the convention in 2012.
“DATA is working closely with all tourism organizations in the city to ensure that the city will have nothing but an excellent presentation,” Bangayan said.
The city’s tourism players composed of DATA, the City Tourism Office (CTO), travel and tour operators and Small Hotels Association of Davao (SHAD), are optimistic that Davao City can host the MICE Convention in 2012.
He said the city was given a pavilion in the upcoming convention to present Davao City’s destinations.
“The Davao pavilion will be a cornucopia of flora and foliage that are tops in tourists’ significant experiences about the city. Award-winning florist and designer Jing Puentespina is at the helm of creating another masterpiece for Davao to impress the delegates and guests during the duration of the congress,” he said.
Mary Ann Montemayor of SHAD said the city can accommodate the 300 to 500 people which normally attend the conference.
During the press conference, the tourism players launched the “Make It Davao Now” campaign which aims to push the city as the prime MICE destination in the Philippines.
Also launched was the campaign’s logo as well as a video that will be presented in Subic. (PNA)
lgseccionph January 28th, 2010, 08:10 AM Davao hospital opens first cardiac rehabilitation center in Mindanao
DAVAO CITY, Jan. 28 (PNA) – A Davao-based hospital opened on Wednesday the first cardiac rehabilitation center to cater patients from all over Mindanao.
The center located at the second floor of the Davao Doctor’s Hospital (DDH), aimed to promote early detection and prevention of cardiac-related illnesses.
DDH medical director Dr. Celia Castillo said the center also aims to lower the incidence of sudden deaths due to such illnesses.
“The rehab center will help patients gain confidence. It can accommodate two to three patients at any given time,” she said.
She said the center also compliments DDH’s Heart Institute Program that provides comprehensive cardiologic program and management that ranges from prevention, invasive, and non-invasive treatments to rehabilitation.
Castillo said the center provides a four-phase program. The first phase (right after bypass) which costs P10,800 per session, includes exercise using a treadmill or walking. All vital signs are monitored and measured.
She emphasized that patients are required to finish eight sessions for the first phase depending on the capacity of the patients.
The goal of the first phase is to educate patients about the healing process. The phase will also educate the patients about stress management, healthy diet, and smoking cessation, she said.
The second phase (outpatient) involves heart monitoring, baseline patient assessment, nutritional counseling, risk factor modification, physical activity counseling, and psychosocial support. During this phase, the patient is monitored and educated on how to monitor blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol.
Phases three and four include maintenance, periodic reviews, and assessment of the patients. (PNA)

Bagani January 28th, 2010, 09:36 AM Hi SSC Davao! I have decided to visit your thread with my white flag. First, let me express my sincerest apology to all the Davao people especially to @Waway, @Dinabaw, @Peng Hok, and to everybody who felt insulted or hurt with my posts in the past. Whatever conflicts that we had, let's just leave them and have something better not just for today but onwards. Again, sorry gyud sa inyo.
Yesterday, @BarPa and yours truly had a good conversation in one of our threads in CdeO. And with that, we realized that peace between CdeO and Davao is not impossible. So we came up with this idea of uniting all skyscrapercity members of Mindanao which involves all cities, provinces, and region, thus SSC Mindanao. Our primary aim is to build a harmonious relationship among SSC members in Mindanao and to prevent CVCs to happen again. Please support this campaign. I know some are still doubtful but rest assured that we're giving this a shot simply because we want to end the seemingly endless war among Mindanao cities especially between Cagayan de Oro and Davao. I am sure that this will benefit us all.
For those who will support us, please put your name in the list. As long as we have the majority's voice then we will consider this campaign a success. We will then have rules as to how we can prevent CVCs in the future. We will not tolerate conflicts by reinforcing negative comments. Instead, let us immediately remind our fellow SSC members to remain tact and calm. Let us immediately kill the fire if we can sense that it's already there.
Lastly, to all those who have already supported this campaign DAGHANG SALAMAT. To all those who have shown their interest, we truly appreciate your kind gesture. Please support this campaign by putting your name in the list. Thank you and GOD bless us all.

Solid waste ordinance passes second hurdle
BY DIANA LHYD SUELTO
The City Council on Tuesday passed on second reading the Davao City Ecological Solid Waste Management Ordinance of 2009 which adopts and implements a comprehensive, integrated, and ecological solid waste management program.
The ordinance is pursuant to the provisions of Republic Act 9003 or the implementation of garbage recycling, garbage segregation and composting, as well as the ban on open dumpsites.
It will go through a third and final reading and, if passed, can be signed into law by Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.
Article I of the ordinance declares the policy of the city “to adopt and implement a comprehensive, integrated and ecological solid waste management program.”
This includes the proper segregation, collection, transport, storage, treatment and disposal of solid waste through the formulation and adoption of the best environmental practice in ecological waste management.
The ordinance “promotes research and development programs to adopt an effective institutional arrangement and improved methods of waste reduction, collection, separation, processing, recovery and disposal.”
It also “institutionalizes public participation and accountability in the development and implementation of an integrated and comprehensive ecological waste management program.”
The ordinance makes it a policy to “utilize environmentally-sound methods that maximize the utilization of valuable resources and encourage resource conservation and recovery.”
The ordinance states that all stores in Davao City shall provide only recycled or recyclable paper bags, biodegradable plastic bags, reusable bags such as cloth bags, bags made of indigenous materials such as buri, abaca, anahaw, bamboo and pineapple, or used corrugated boxes and cartoons.
Shoppers are also encouraged to refuse a checkout bag from the store when buying small items that do not require a bag.
The ordinance aims that in two years upon its approval, the use of non-biodegradable plastic bags and polystyrene as food and beverage container shall be banned in Davao City.
The ordinance also has in its provision the mandatory segregation of solid waste into biodegradable, recyclable, residual, and special waste.
The ordinance will also help lengthen the life span of the sanitary landfill of the city located in Carmen, Tugbok District.
Councilor Leo Avila, chair of the Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, said he was quite surprised when the ordinance was passed without fusses from his fellow councilors.

tj_brewed January 29th, 2010, 12:43 AM Davao tourism players combine forces for MICE blitz
By Mai Gevera
PIA (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&r=&y=&mo=&fi=p100129.htm&no=02)
Davao City (29 January) -- Davao travel operators and agencies have agreed to come up with affordable tour packages including airfare, hotel accommodation and tour destinations.
This is part of Davao's bid as the next destination for Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE) set on 2012.
Davao city and five other destinations namely Camarines Sur, Bohol, Ilocos, Cebu, and General Santos City are fighting to be the next host of the MICE Conference.
Davao Tourism Association (DATA) president Gene Bangayan revealed that the team is working closely with all tourism organizations in the city to ensure that Davao will have nothing but an excellent presentation.
One of the strategies being pushed is the consolidated effort of travel and tourism players in creating affordable and creative tour packages that would entice local and foreign tourists to come and visit the city.
Susan Palad, Tourism Congress representative for Mindanao announced that this plan is now in the offing as more and more players committed support to bring down rates of airfare, accommodation, and tour package.
"Some of the hotels are offering up to 50 percent discount in their room rates. These are promotional rates that we will offer during travel marts sold on a book and pay basis," Palad explained.
Unlike any other regular discount offerings, these promotional rates are actually set on peak season like Kadayawan Festival, Araw ng Dabaw, and Christmas season.
"We really want to make a difference in this coming MICE that is why we are positioning Davao as the best destination for MICE," Palad added.
Also a strategy to win the bid is the launch of "Make It Davao, Now" campaign as the city debuts at the Philippine MICE Conference in Subic, Pampanga next month.
Davao sees the need to be the next destination for MICE as the ripple effects on hotels, restaurants, and souvenir shops are greatly felt in local communities.
dinabaw January 29th, 2010, 01:26 AM Davao hospital strengthens position as premier hospital
Friday, January 29, 2010
By Carlo P. Mallo
SETTING its eyes on the South East Asian Region, Davao Doctors Hospital (DDH) is rolling out new services and infrastructure to strengthen its position as one of the most competent medical institutions in the region.
Rolling out new facilities, newly renovated rooms, and upgraded equipment are just some of the plans of Mindanao's premier medical institution this year.
On Wednesday, DDH opened its new Cardiac Rehabilitation Center, the last piece that completed the comprehensive care offered at the Cardiology unit of the hospital.
Click here for stories and updates on the Sinulog 2010 Festival.
"We are positioning for South East Asia market," Doctor Celia Castillo, medical director of DDH, said in an interview Wednesday.
At present, construction is on going at DDH for a five-storey annex that will house more medical clinics as the 10-storey medical tower has already been filled to capacity.
Within the next couple of months, DDH will also launch its new Linac machine and a new Cancer Unit that will provide comprehensive care for cancer patients.
Moreover, DDH continues to prepare for its planned bid on becoming the first medical tourism institution in Mindanao, admitting that it is now processing its application to be the center of medical tourism.
Now on its 40th year, DDH has been touted to be the leading healthcare facility in Mindanao with its roster of medical professionals and its state-of-the-art facilities.
At present, DDH is in the process of upgrading its facilities and infrastructure with its planned expansions.
A 10-storey medical tower, which houses the doctors' clinics, is flanked by a five-storey hospital building.
DDH is also considered as one of the most complete medical institutions in terms of sub-specialties in the medical field.
"We have almost all sub specialties covered," Doctor Dominador Cabrera, vice president for medical affairs, said.
With medical specialists practicing at DDH, the hospital management finds it necessary to continually upgrade their equipment.
"We provide them with the best equipment," Cabrera said. (CPM)

WITH his captivating smile, sweet demeanor and cool voice, this Davaoeño hopeful leaves fans all over swooning.
Half-Pinoy and half-Portuguese, Steven spent most of his life in the United States.
At 22 years old, Steven has already earned a degree in Culinary Arts in California. If he did not audition for StarStruck, Steven would have pursued a career as a chef.
Steven always had a penchant for cooking. In fact, when he was tasked to do a talk show as one of the challenges in the show, he opted to do a cooking show and prepared a delectable vegetable salad with hosts Lucy Torres-Gomez and Wilma Doesnt.
As Steven spent most of his life in the States, he didn’t have the chance to practice much of his Tagalog. He acknowledged the fact that not being able to speak Tagalog fluently could be a problem. Aside from the difficulty of expressing himself, it could also limit the characters that he could play in the future.
Steven confessed, “Nahihirapan po talaga ako mag-Tagalog pero everyday I’m trying to learn the language. I’m trying pero sometimes it’s hard and it can get frustrating.” He added that his co-finalists have been helping him learn Tagalog, as he vowed to keep on improving and improving each day.
Steven has also been criticized for his lack of energy. He responded by saying, “I always try to use what they [the Council] say to improve myself.”
The viewers have the power to influence the outcome of the competition. “I keep in touch with them sa Facebook. I give effort to widen my fan base and ask for support,” Steven said.
He mentioned Rocco and Enzo as the biggest threat for him. “I see them especially Rocco kasi he did well in the challenges so sa akin, I try to improve myself every day,” Steven said.
When asked why he should be the next Ultimate Survivor, Steven said, “I really want this and I’ve made a lot of sacrifices for it.”
Steven continues to make his kababayans in Davao proud. When asked what his message to fellow Davaoeños was, Steven, with a big smile said, “Salamat kaayo!”

REIN Kugel, a German citizen who married a Filipina 20 years ago was in Davao early January this year. The lady, Aurora, is a Davaoeña and she and Rein held their wedding at the Paradise Beach Resort in Samal Island. On January 10, 2010, the couple came to the same resort, but this time with a whole band made up of 40 German professionals who played music as their pastime, at the same time going around the world to entertain music lovers. They are known as the Musikverein Kressbronn Brass Band.
Paradise Beach Resort was ready for the “German Invasion”and the visitors who flocked to the place to listen to the selections which brought nostalgic memories to the German community of Davao City. And for the first time in its 205 years of existence, the band played the Philippine National Anthem instead of the German National Anthem. As Rein Kugel explained, he brought the band to play in Davao straight from Germany. The group was a guest of the City Government of Davao, received warmly by Vice Mayor Sara Zimmerman Duterte-Carpio. Sara’s German descent is very much evident in her looks which she takes after her mother, Elizabeth Zimmerman-Duterte.
Playing at the People’s Park the night before, the band members enjoyed their day wading on the beach before the program started, performing with their bare feet on the sand. Edwin Weiss, Mayor of Kressbronn, Germany is a member of the band made up of office workers, engineers and other professionals. They meet twice a week and perform at concerts, parades and have gone to Manhattan in New York, and at the Octoberfest in California. They also played at St. Peter’s Square for Pope John Paul II. They live in Southern Germany near Switzerland and Austria and they have also traveled to the Czech Republic. They have never been to Asia before.
Some of the selections they played were “Memory,” from the Broadway Musical “Cats,” “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “Rock Around the Clock” and “Down” by the Riverside. During their church wedding in Germany, Rein Kugel says the band played “Bayan Ko” for the couple.
That was a beautiful German Invasion in Paradise filled with music and wonderful memories for Aurora and Rein Kugel.

Friday, 29 January 2010
IN CELEBRATION of the 15th year of the foundation of the Southern Philippines Foundation for the Arts, Culture & Ecology (SPACE) and the 40th anniversary of the country’s premiere dance company, the Ballet Philippines, the production MASTERWORKS will be presented to the Davao audience this coming February 12 at 7:00 pm (Gala) at the Central Bank Convention Hall, Jacinto Extension, Davao City.
The tour-de-force performances of MASTERWORKS pay homage to Ballet Philippines’ most popular dances taken from its extensive repertoire of classical, neo-classical and contemporary works. It is surely something very special. And such a grand opportunity for Mindanaoans to watch Ballet Philippines’ eight outstanding works in just one special occasion without having to go to Manila’s Cultural Center of the Philippines to do so.
Best of all, Masterworks will feature Davao City’s celebrated, international choreographer, maestra Agnes Locsin’s first ever highly acclaimed neo-ethnic work, Igorot. Igorot shows the successful and dynamic marriage of ethnic and ballet dance genres as envisioned by the talented Datu Bago awardee for Dance, maestra Agnes Locsin.
“Igorot is the first of Agnes Locsin’s many works for Ballet Philippines, and was first performed in the Philippines on September 30, 1988. Known for her distinctly Filipino neo-ethnic choreographies, Locsin melds the ethnic ritual dances of the Igorot tribe with the classical forms of ballet, channelling a new sense of power to traditional dance through the striking use of pointework. Vignettes of the mountain tribe’s daily routines are animated through colourful and vivid movements interpreted in classical ballet and layers of different dance forms,” explains Ballet Philippines’ Artistic Director, Paul Alexander Morales. “For this reason, Igorot holds its ground as one of Ballet Philippines’ iconic pieces in its vast repertoire of classical, modern and contemporary work,” he adds. Morales, himself, once studied ballet under maestra Locsin in Davao City.
Unknown to many, Agnes Locsin’s Igorot was first premiered on October 11, 1987, at the Meervart Theater in Amsterdam of the Netherlands. “I was commissioned by Les Petite Theatre Amsterdam, a dance company of five dancers, to choreograph a number for their debut performance in 1987. I was excited and very nervous at that time to do so for a professional group in Europe,” narrates Locsin as she continues, “Why did Igorot enter my mind? In high school (Philippine Women’s College of Davao City) and college (the Ateneo de Davao University), folk dance competitions always had for winners, Igorot dances that displayed admirable unison dancing. Using this formula, I remember winning two dance competitions with the Igorot dance. It is quite impressive to watch Igorot maidens walking, swaying arms, and flicking fingers all together. Ergo: cygnets=unison dance=Igorot maidens.”
The idea of doing Igorot for a modern dance narrative entered Locsin’s prolific mind as early as 1983. To prepare for it, she went up to Bontoc to join a tribe not frequented by tourists for immersion. “That was quite a trip and I still remember so many details of the journey….I remember the women and children coming to the mission house, curious at our presence. When they found out why we were there, they took us to a gathering hall, took out pans and pots and taught us their dances. In exchange I taught them disco dancing. We jammed. Afterwards, the women sang songs and played the nose flute for us,” recalls Locsin.
“The next morning, we went to the village and watched them work. And from that singular visit, I learned a lot. Vivid still are the images I caught that morning….And then we went home. My mind was reeling from the images seen and glimpsed from conversations with the people of the village.”
“To date, Igorot has remained one of my most difficult dances in that it demands so much strength in stamina and technique. In one rehearsal in Amsterdam, a dancer told me that I must have an ambulance ready after each performance. This he said after a run of the male section,” Locsin confesses.
Igorot, according to Locsin, has been performed over 50 times both nationally and internationally. “I stopped counting at 50; and this was in the early 1990’s.”
Do watch Ballet Philippines’ Masterworks this coming February 12. For details, please call Leda at cellphone number 0917-7054759. I’d be happy to sell you tickets (P1000, P500. P300) myself. Please contact me at cellphone number 0921-5522855.

juniordiscovery January 29th, 2010, 03:30 PM City income reaches P3.8-B in 2009
DAVAO City's total income last year was pegged at close to P4 billion from combined sources locally and the Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) share, City Treasurer Rodrigo Riola said Thursday.
The city's revenues amounting to P3,787,453,494.09 were sourced from local collections of P1,386,788,247.09 and IRA share of P2,400,665,247.
Riola, on Thursday's I-Speak forum, said the total income exceeded the annual target for 2009 of 3,780,869,248 by 0.17 percent.
Click here for stories and updates on the Sinulog 2010 Festival.
Breaking down the revenues sourced out locally, the City Treasurer's Office (CTO) collected P1,096,980,354.35 for tax revenue, P88,940,859.50 for permits and licensing, P93,060,190.71 for service income, P2,980,187.15 for business income, P17,942,436.17 for other income, and P86,884,219.21 under the economic enterprises.
Riola said for the year 2010, the target revenue is P3,799,803,248 that will be sourced from targeted local collections of P1,389,138 and IRA share of P2,410,665,248.
The CTO projected the increase in 2010 target before the Supreme Court issued a ruling that confirms the constitutionality of the 16 newly-created cities, which would affect IRA share of old cities.
"The total appropriation (for 2010) will be utilized under the following accounts. For the general fund: P3,151,580,437 and for the Annual Development Fund P562,425,321," Riola said.
Riola also gave an update on the city's business permit collection, which the CTO, through the Business Bureau, processed from January 4 to 26.
He said there were 25,464 business permits renewed while there were 790 new business permit applications. This totals to 26,255 permits processed under this year's first quarter or renewal period.
Out of the 26,255 permits, 25,902 have been approved, Riola said.
Compared with the 2009 business permit statistics, within the period of January 4 to 26, there were 713 new permit applications, 24,279 permits renewed for a total of 24,992 permits processed. (JCZ)

Key tourism players gear for ‘Make it Davao now’ event
January 29, 2010, 3:30pm
DAVAO CITY (PNA) – “Make it Davao now!” is the battlecry of key tourism players here saying that this city is ready for the big event.
The tourism industry players of this city bonded together upon invitation of the Department of Tourism (DoT) to carry a major publicity campaign during the Philippine MICE convention (Meeting, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions) in Subic, Pampanga from February 4 to 7.
Gene Bangayan, president of the Davao Tourism Association (DATA), said they would like to bring the readiness of Davao to MICE participants in Subic as they will bid for the same event in 2012 competing against emerging destinations like Camarines Sur and General Santos City passing through a stringent selection process.
She said there are six destinations in the Philippines to become future host of MICE aside from Bohol, Iloilo and Cebu. Art Boncato, Davao City Convention and Visitors Corporation chair, said hosting the Asean Tourism Forum here in 2006 has proven that the city is ready for any event.
He said in the first International Tourismus Bourse (ITB) Asia in Singapore, Lee Choon Long, organizer of the World Tourism Congress, expressed deep admiration for Davao after staging that event.
Mary Ann Montemayor, former chair of the BIMP-EAGA tourism council and of the Small Hotel Association of Davao, said the MICE is a $300-billion industry.
“If the Philippines could get a share of about $3 billion that would also benefit Davao with the ripple effect on hotels, restaurants, souvenirs shops and public transportation that will boost the local economies,” she said.
Although Montemayor said they had been promoting Davao for the past three years as culture adventure destination in line with the Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines-East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA), it is also important to extensively campaign for this project.
“Davao is ready for a host destination as well like the MICE Conference,” she said. Montemayor said MICE could cushion the negative impact of tourist arrivals. It is corporate and industry driven with a small conference of about 300 to 500 participants, an event of the specialized sector of tourism that require higher standards for meetings and conferences

It really depends on the budget and preference. Based on what Ive seen, those visiting Davao lately are actually those from the Class A or B or the upscale / highend market.
Sad but true, in terms of fare and expenses, Davao as a tourist destination is quite expensive compared to other destinations and i think thats the reason why those who have enough (financially) is our city's target market. Which is actually good for the local economy of the city ;)
Interesting thing to note though is that in spite of its price, Davao still managed to maintain its position as one of the Top 3 tourist destinations in the country along with Cebu and Boracay. :)

Only a few women, regardless of their age, can claim ownership to paradise. Jazmin Middleton is one of the lucky few.
Jazmin wakes up to the sound of the pristine clean waters of Samal Island and is lulled back to sleep at night by the chilling wind of the beachfront. Except of course, when she has to fly back to Florida, to revert to domesticity.
She has indeed come a long way, from Mangagoy in Surigao del Sur where she grew up, to the land of milk and honey. And yet, she keeps coming back to her birthplace in Babak, Samal Island in Davao del Norte where her heart belongs.
Technically, it is not only her heart which has kept her coming back to the island, but BlueJaz Beach Resort and Waterpark, which she and her Irish husband have nourished and made into a paradise for every Dabawenyo who wants a taste of it – or shall we say, of paradise?
The eleven-hectare land on which the resort sits was supposed to be the site of a private rest house for the Middletons, including their two children, a boy and a girl aged 6 and 7 years.
“We were not planning to invest in a resort, but a lot of people have been asking our permission if they could go inside our property for swimming,” Jazmin said. Her pilot husband has an eye for good real investment, though, so they decided to open the rest house to the public in May of 2008.
BlueJaz Resort manager Noel Martin said only four hectares of the total land area has been developed. In fact, he said, “while we are already using the four hectares for the resort, some parts of the land are still undergoing development.
From a four-room resort in 2008, BlueJaz now boasts of up to 30 rooms, divided into different Cottages. If you want to be pampered, then stay at the FIJI Cottages for only P3,500 per night. A bigger group can go for The White House, which is really a complete two-storey house with four bedrooms, dining area and a TV room for only P12,000. Or you can opt for the Jazmin Rooms at a rate of P2,500 per night.
Resorts on Samal Island are located near each other and only a thin line, albeit a gate, separates them. What makes BlueJaz a favorite among locals and foreigners is, however, the quality facilities the resort offers, from the hot and cold shower in all rooms, the giant waterslides for kids and adults and the fresh water infinity pool. The resort is also very accessible and only a 5-minute boat ride from the mainland.
“All our equipment and gadgets, even our office supplies, come from the States,” Jazmin said. The giant slides you see at the resort were all sourced from the US, mainly because the Middletons only want the best for their customers. With the frequency that Jazmin commutes between Samal in the Philippines and the US, which is usually once every two weeks, you can only imagine how easy it is for her and her husband to bring in gadgets from the States.
Jazmin looks pretty and young (she is really young), but she handles all the responsibilities involved in running a first class resort such as BlueJaz like a pro. She said she owes it to having good people around her, starting with Noel, the resorts’ hands-on manager, who is really practically at the forefront of everything.
Throw all your expectations to the wind when you think about this entrepreneur and young mom. She breezes through the hotel’s facilities like a teenager looking for adventure, unless of course you know her and realize that she is indeed in command of her ship. It is perhaps this free-spirited girl-woman that lends some sort of magic to the resort.
You wouldn’t believe it but aside from managing 70 employees when she is in Samal, she also single-handedly takes care of their two children when she is back home in Florida. While it took some time for her to adjust to her challenging roles as entrepreneur and young mom, she said she has learned how to balance everything, including her role as a young wife.
“I rear them the Filipino way even when we are in the US, but they are very independent like most Americans,” she said of her kids. Jazmin has a way of keeping stress at bay and that is through one passion she can never get rid of---ballroom dancing. “I still do it sometimes, but rarely these days when I am so busy,” she added.
Approaching BlueJaz at daytime using their front gate can be exciting. However, try to ride the barge at night and enter the resort through the back gate and you will be mesmerized by all the lights. Fridays and Saturday nights are ideal for those who want good music since the Blue Bling Bar & Restaurant features various singers during those times. While those nights are ideal for couples, Sundays are definitely “in” for families as the resort considers this a Family Day filled with clowns, magic, games and surprises.
Jazmin said it is pretty romantic to just sit along the beachfront at night while sipping coffee or your favorite drink. It must have been one of those nights she spent sitting right on that spot when she decided that one day, she would also put up a coffee shop right beside the restaurant. After all, BlueJaz has WiFi for its guests, so the idea of sipping coffee is never far behind.
Far from being satisfied with what the resort has to offer, Jazmin said they are set to open not one, but two Ziplines right in the resort. And if you think that’s pretty tame, then brace yourself for the wakeboarding facility which the resort is set to offer the public before this month is over!
Jazmin was only 15 years old when she went to the US as an adventurous spirit. It is perhaps this sense of adventure that makes her look forward to every day of her life despite the pressure of being a young mom, a wife, and an entrepreneur. Did we forget to mention the owner of one of the best places to go in Samal Island?

dinabaw February 2nd, 2010, 02:27 AM 3 Davao films in Cinema Rehiyon
Three films from Davao City will be featured for this year’s Philippine International Arts Festival of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) Ani ng Sining celebration.
Full length three films namely “Hospital Boat” (an NCCA grantee) by Arnel Mardoquio, “Way to the Sunset” by Jose Bagane Fiola, and “Ang Gugmang Nag-alirong Kay Mateo” by John Paul Seniel will be among the regional films to be shown in NCCA’s Cinema Rehiyon 2010.
“Hospital Boat” is a two-hour film about the true state of Mindanao which is at war. It opens with 12-year-old Nikol, who was orphaned by war and has found a new home in Isla Kalilintad, an island community of people from different cultures and faith traditions.
“Way to the Sunset” featured Davao’s unique Japanese heritage. Ninety -five percent of the film is in Nihonggo as the story deals between a Nikkei-Jin (Japanese descendant) and a Japinoy (child born of mixed Japanese and Filipino parentage).
“Ang Gugmang Nag-alirong Kay Mateo” is a modern-day adaptation of the Bible parable the prodigal son.
The films were part of this year’s Cinema Rehiyon as non-competing entries for the film festival.
The festival will feature 10 regions from all over the country. The cinema committee will head the selection of short and full length films from each participating regions.
This year’s Cinema Rehiyon is participated by Bacolod, Baguio, Cagayan de Oro, Iloilo, Naga, Pampanga, Samar, Central Visayas (Cebu and Bohol), Western and Central Mindanao.
The selected films will be screened in the culminating film festival to be held at the Cultural Center of the Philippines this coming February 16 to 20.
Cinema Rehiyon was established to showcase some of the best works of regional Filipino filmmakers as well as give budding and established regional filmmakers the opportunity to showcase their unique cultures in cinematic form.
Committee on Cinema headed by Jab Garcia said they started touring Mindanao last year to look for films made outside Manila.
“We were amazed with the quantity, quality, and value of cinema in the regions,” Garcia said.
Cinema Rehiyon (films from other Philippines) 2010 offers enthusiasts with a much needed change with unique mix of films set in the filmmakers’ respective regions and shot in their local dialects.
International films from Brazil, Russia, China, and India will be screened also during the culmination of the festival. Maya M. Padillo

In my honest opinion, tamad is an inappropriate word to be used. Preferences just vary and there are some who would like to live or visit a city where everything is just around 5 minutes away and some who would like to travel few minutes more. In your case, one of Davao's turn offs is the distance of one mall to another or one destination to another.
For me, living in a big city like Metro Manila made me appreciate the distance of the malls or establishments in Davao in relation to one another. To be honest, even if i ll reside in Matina and I ll go to Victoria Plaza, that's bearable and pretty close for me compared to residing near Eastwood City and you want to go to places such as Mall of Asia or Alabang Town Center. ;) That's effin far! Anyway, as what they always say, to each of his own. ;)

Davao property boom continues
Monday, 18 January 2010 00:00
by Lovely A. Carillo
DAVAO CITY is now definitely a favorite investment destination for the country’s top real estate developers. What’s heartening is that these developers think that the city’s property market is far from being saturated, even as new projects, ranging from the low-cost to the high-end, are sprouting like mushrooms in the center and the outskirts of the city.
Aside from some 30 property developers with active projects, a good number of new players have been added to the sector, according to government and industry sources.
The current players with projects worth billions of pesos in Davao City alone include
DMC Urban Property, Landco Pacific, HLC, Camella, Holiday, Davao Joyful, RJP, Davao Elite, Sta. Lucia, 8990 Housing Dev’t. Corp., Foothills, Ladislawa, Kisan Lu, Hemeni Land, Ayala Land, Damosa and Filinvest to mention a few. They are now into high-end housing and medium-rise condominium development in the poblacion and peripheral areas within a radius of less than 10 kms from the center.
Among the real estate firms that have completed and have ongoing projects in the city are Manny Villar’s Vista Land with high-end projects like Solariega, Toscana and the latest Camella Northpoint; Kisan Lu Lands and Development Inc. which, after a series of low-cost housing, has now ventured into high-end homes like the classy Amiya Resort Residences; Villa Azalea along Maa which is a modern take on the Bahay Kubo. And there is the Consunji Group which revolutionized the condominium industry in the city with their Ecoland 2000 and Magallanes Residences projects.
Appearing before Davao editors and business writers during the yearend staging of Business News Forum at SM MediSpa last month, Roberto Teo, city investment and promotions chief, said property development projects worth P5 billion were among those which benefitted from tax incentives granted by the city government.
In a press briefing and site visitation last Tuesday, Allan Barquilla, Filinvest Davao manager, summed up his company’s performance in 2009 as “way better than in 2008.”
Filinvest is gearing up to get a big slice of the emerging real property market in the city by putting up six big real estate housing development projects in Davao City alone. That’s on top of the firm’s medium rise developments.
“Davao’s property market is far from being saturated and proof of that are Filinvest’s existing and future development projects in the city,” Barquilla told business reporters during an interview conducted right at the site of one of the company’s biggest projects in the city, the One Oasis Condominiums located just at the back of SM City Davao in Ecoland.
Barquilla said the company’s medium rise development project accounted for 10% to 15% of their gross sales last year, with the Davao City market accounting for huge sales. He said Filinvest’s main office in Manila will soon reveal last year’s sales figures in Davao, adding that the company considers the condominium project its bestseller.
“We are faced with a changing market here which has become more sophisticated,” Filinvest business development manager Geraldine de Gorostiza said. Property buyers now prefer to invest in properties that are not only closer to the city but are more affordable, she added.
Filinvest is considered the market leader in property development even if its rates are slightly higher than in the rest of the industry. “We believe this is because we offer good location and we are a built-up company that operates not on mere promises alone but we deliver,” he said.
The One Oasis condominium project of Filinvest is a six-building complex. Two of the buildings were completed last year, with the third building nearing completion middle of 2010 and the fourth one to start construction this year.
“The first building was sold out within a month after the pre-selling last year,” Barquilla said. The second building has also been sold out as of July 2009. Building 3 is already 60% sold out.
Barquilla said majority or about 40% of their MRD customers are out-of-towners or coming from other areas in Mindanao and the country, but all local buyers. Overseas Filipino Workers make up 30%, while the remaining 30% of condominium buyers are accounted for by Dabawenyos.
Other property developers are experiencing a similar if not slight different phenomenon, a source at Camella told Edge Davao.
One of the very first projects of Filinvest in the city is Orange Grove, which is now in the last 20% of their inventory. This is a 32-hectare development along Diversion Road. Fonte de Villa Abrille, which has a very mouth-watering location right in Juna Subdivision, was already sold out as of June 2009.
Le Jardin, a 12-hectare high-end subdivision located in Maa, adjacent to NCCC Mall and just a kilometre away from SM City Davao, is almost sold out, with only 15 units remaining at P9,000 to P10,000 per sq m.
Filinvest is also very visible in Dumoy as it has two projects there. One is Ocean Cove, a 15-hectare middle class beachfront housing which costs P6,000 per square meter with a minimum of 200 sq m lot per cut. Another one is Villa Mercedita which is considered pretty affordable starting at P5,800 per sq m , with lots cut into 110 to 140 sq m per lot.
One of Filinvest’s property developments that has attracted a lot of celebrities in the business, political and entertainment sectors is Kembali Coast in Kaputian, Samal. This is a 50-hectare development divided into four phases. Phase 1 of the development is nearly 90% sold out and Phase 2 already 20% sold out. This is a high end resort development priced at P3,000 per sqm with lots cut into a minimum of 750 sqm for each lot. While Barquilla would not reveal the name of their locators, he said the country’s top cosmetic surgeon owns a lot in Kembali.
Despite its success in selling its real estate development projects in Davao City, Filinvest is not resting on its laurels and has even become more aggressive in its marketing. The company has conducted a sales caravan in far-flung areas in Mindanao including Surigao, Bukidnon, Isulan and Surallah in South Cotabato.
With all these real estate development projects rising one after another, one would think that Davao City would run out of open spaces for new developments. But then again, knowing that these developers have explored Samal Island, one has to admit that there seems to be at present endless opportunities in Davao’s real estate market.

SM Prime to raise $300 million for expansion
By Zinnia B. Dela Peña (The Philippine Star) Updated February 04, 2010 12:00 AM
MANILA, Philippines - Shopping mall giant SM Prime Holdings Corp. is eyeing to raise $300 million through a property trust listing designed to help fund its expansion here and in China, according to a top company official.
SM Prime chief financial officer Jeffrey Lim said the real estate investment trust (REIT) will package some of the firm’s shopping malls which the firm has yet to identify. “We haven’t decided yet which malls to include but we’re looking at some that would be attractive to overseas investors as well. We hope to unlock the value of our properties and maximize total return,” Lim said.
Lim said the REITs to be listed do not include the group’s shopping malls in China. The company earlier said it was looking to list its China assets as a REIT on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. He said this would happen when the company has built eight to 10 malls in China. The group, through SM Land (China) currently owns three malls the – SM Xiamen, Jinjiang and Chengdu.
REITs can apply to properties or mortgages, often for shopping malls, office buildings, apartments, warehouses, hotels and car parks. Individual investors can buy REIT shares directly on a stock exchange or by investing in a mutual fund that specializes in real estate.
Lim said the group is currently waiting for the implementing rules and regulations for the REIT which he said should hopefully be finalized in the next three months.
REITs can offer the less wealthy the chance to invest in large shopping malls and high-grade offices by buying just a slice of the whole property portfolio. They are required to distribute 90 percent of their income, which may be taxable in the hands of the investors.
“I think this should be good for the capital market. It would allow investors to buy these instruments,” Lim said.
Lim said the company will appoint a financial advisor to help structure its planned property trust.
Proceeds from the REIT will be used to bankroll SM Prime’s domestic and international expansion and pay down debt. It has $30 million in maturing debt in 2011.
The company has earmarked P12 billion for its capital expenditures this year to fund the construction of five malls locally and at least one mall in China. Among the malls slated for opening this year are in Calamba, Laguna; Tarlac, Novaliches, Masinag in Marcos Highway, and San Pablo, Laguna.
For 2011, the company will open four to five new malls located in Gen. Santos,Mindanao; Commonwealth; Lanang, Davao City; and La Consolacion, Cebu.
In China, targeted for opening are Suzhou, Chongquing, and Zibo.
Suzhou, with a gross floor area of 73,000 square meters is under construction and is expected to open this year. Zibo and Chongqing, which has the biggest population in China) are scheduled to open in 2012 and 2011, respectively.
The SM malls in China contribute five percent to total revenues and two percent to net income of SM Prime Holdings Inc., the country’s largest shopping mall operator.
Revenue contribution of the China malls are expected to increase to 10 percent by 2013 to 2014, SM Prime officials earlier said.
Lim said the company is expected to post a growth of eight to nine percent in net income in 2009 on the back of a 12 to 15 percent rise in revenues. In 2008, SM Prime reported a net profit of P6.41 billion on revenues of P17.8 billion.
Given the firm’s strong performance last year, Lim is confident that SM Prime would “continue to deliver good growth this year.”
The company expects to end the year with a total of 41 malls with a gross floor area of 4.5 million square meters.

PGMA in Davao to highlight cyber corridor at Damosa IT Park
By Mai Gevera
Davao City (4 February) -- After Laguna and Cebu, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo visited the Concentrix call center facility at the Damosa IT Park, this city, as part of her week-long tour to highlight this administration's cyber corridor project.
The tour includes Baguio, Metro Manila, Clark and Davao and Cebu, which Arroyo cited in her State of the Nation Address as a major contributor to the growth of the BPO industry in the country.
President Arroyo toured the facilities of Concentrix, a global company with award-winning expertise in providing business processing support services. It has locations in China, Japan, United States, and Central America accommodating over 4,500 employees.
Players from the Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) industry briefed her on the status of the cyber corridor project in Davao City, being chosen as the cyber corridor hub in Mindanao.
ICT Davao President Lisabel Holganza presented that ICT in Davao has grown from offering 1,171 IT-related jobs in 2001 to more than 6,000 jobs in 2009.
"We are expecting these figures to reach 30,000 by 2015. We simply need to make Davao friendly to potential investors and urge them to set up more locators here," Holganza said.
Davao is identified as the cyber hub in Mindanao for it has the most number of locators with 60 BPOs or ICT-related companies spread over the city.
She explained that despite high demand of call center workers, Davao has not yet filled up the requirement.
The ICT players in Davao told President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo that Davao still needs sites accredited by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority. Most of the potential locations identified by investors could hardly keep up the time requirement of the investors which usually caused the delay or the location transfer of most of the BPOs.
"This is why we very much need the support of the national and the local government." she explained.
She asked the national government more subsidies in the form of scholarships and employment opportunities since most of these were said to be captured and absorbed in the National Capital Region (NCR).
The local government, on its part, is urged to improve its incentives code by way of providing non-fiscal incentives. This includes tax exemptions for ICT companies and employees working in the IT industry. (PIA XI) [top]

ICT brings "Make IT Davao" slogan
By Mai Gevera
Davao City (4 February) -- The Information, Communication, Technology (ICT) sector supports the latest campaign of the tourism sector by launching its "Make IT Davao " slogan based on similar slogan crafted by the local private tourism sector.
The tourism sector recently launched "Make it Davao now!" as its battlecry in promoting the city and eyeing to be the next host of a big tourism event.
Realizing the need to partner with the tourism sector, ICT Davao pledged support by way of synergizing efforts with the latter. They adapted the tourism slogan but incorporating their I.T. industry twist.
ICT Davao president Lisabel Holganza bared in yesterday's Club 888 at the Marco Polo Davao the partnership of the ICT industry with the tourism sector in promoting the city for the increase of foreign and domestic travel.
"We hope to synergize our efforts with the tourism sector and offer Davao as an attractive location for leisure of ICT executives," Holganza said.
She explained that if the city could bring in more Business Processing Outsourcing companies in Davao, an increase of foreign and local travelers is most likely to follow.
One of the ICT movers in the city is ICT Davao, an umbrella organization assisted by the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the ICT Council of Davao.
It adopted its new name ICT Davao in 2006 and has revitalized its membership which now includes the ICT educational and technical training institutions, the sub-sector association of various IT-enabled and BPO services such as contact centers, transcription providers, FOSS users, IT software and hardware vendors, i-Café operators and inventors.
Holganza said that ICT in Davao has all the components in place to claim as Mindanao's cyber hub. In terms of business climate, Davao is named by the Asian Institute of Management as the 2007 Most Competitive City and Fourth in RP's IT-BPO Next Wave Cities.
The city has the major telecommunication capacity, redundancy and resiliency in place. Other factors needed for a cyber hub like next generation capability for IT-BPO spaces, and air and sea linkages are all in Davao City. (PIA XI) [top]

Ordinance to clean city’s sewers passes 2nd reading
Written by: Fusilero , Kristianne
Thursday, 04 February 2010
THE CITY council passed on second reading the Septage and Sewerage Management Ordinance that seeks to cut wastewater and prevent sludge in septic tanks or public drainage system from overflowing.
“The formulation of a septage and sewerage program for the city is necessary and timely. There is an existing environment-related problems particularly the deteriorating quality of water in Davao River and the Davao Gulf,” Councilor Leonardo Avila III, the proponent of the ordinance, said.
Deteriorating quality of the gulf, he said, can be traced to the “untreated wastewater from residential, commercial and industrial establishments.”
Avila, chair of the committee on environment, said the legislation is pursuant to the Clean Water Act that mandates all local government to have policies that would protect the fresh, brackish and marine waters.
Some of the provisions in the proposed ordinance are the creation of the septage treatment facility under the local government or accredited service provider, construction of communal toilets and septic tanks that would prevent improper wastewater disposal by the informal settlers, septic tank maintenance, and sludge collection, transport, treatment and disposal.
Also in the proposed law, the desludging or the process of removing accumulated sludge from septic tanks or drainage systems should be carried out every five years or when the wastewater volume is already half of the total capacity of the septic tank.
During deliberations, Councilor Peter Laviña asked why the Davao City Water District shall come up with an easy payment mechanism for the desludging fee when the city government should be the one that would shoulder this problem.
His suggestion was carried out by Avila who amended the provision. It now states: “The city shall come up with an easy payment mechanism, wherein property owners will have an option to pay in advance and in equal installments for three to five years.”
Councilor Susabel Reta lauded the proponent and said the creation of this legislation is a dream of the city. However, she said there should be a strict implementation of the proposed ordinance.
“Sayang lang (It’s a waste) if it is not properly implemented. It is a good legislation but there should be point-persons to look into the implementation after the passage of this proposed law. There should be people who would be responsible in monitoring the wastewater management,” Reta said.
Avila said he is optimistic that there will be a strict implem

juniordiscovery February 4th, 2010, 09:04 PM 14 investors pour in P1.19B in Central Mindanao in 2009
DAVAO CITY—Last-minute inquiries reaching P11.57 billion in the last quarter of 2009 could compensate for the decline in actual investments during the past two years in Southern Mindanao. Central Mindanao has made short work of attracting investors.
The Board of Investments (BOI) here showed that Southern Mindanao—comprising of the three Davao provinces, Compostela Valley and Davao City—made out with P1.19 billion from 14 investment companies, mostly in agriculture and housing.
The amount is a drop by 67 percent from the P3.2-billion investment in 2008, with 17 players contributing. But what the region lost in amount last year, it gained in the area of employment. Last year the new investments hired 7,043 workers, higher than the number in 2008, when the investors hired only 4,760.
Gil Dureza, chief of three regional BOI offices in Mindanao, said the global financial crisis forced many prospective investors to suspend their immediate plans to invest.
“There’s one foreign agricultural company who said that they would hold yet their plans at investing here while they would also look around for other investment sites in India and Africa,” he said. “But that company said it would pursue the plans here.”
“Actually, the low investment performance in the nine months of 2009 could be easily offset by the surprising swarm of inquiries from other investors coming in the last quarter of the year,” he said. “In fact, one of the companies which expressed interest has actually put up its investment in a processing plant in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur.”
The company, CJ Corp., is the parent company of electronics firm Samsung Corp. Dureza said the company would be putting up a processing plant to produce monosaccharide, a form of sugar, from the shell of coconut, using a new technology. The company was currently clearing an area in Sta. Cruz and would be expected to conduct a groundbreaking within the first quarter of the year. The CJ Corp. would invest P2 billion.
There were 32 companies seeking information and expressing interest in putting up investment in Southern and Central Mindanao, a big group of them eyeing production activities in agriculture. One company was planning to up the BonGreen Bio Energy Project worth P1 billion and could help increase bioenergy production in Mindanao.
The other big investments that were planned for operation were the 2,000-hectare expansion of plantation operations of Sumitomo Fruits Corp. at a cost of P2 billion; a 2,000-hectare expansion in Bukidnon of the pineapple production of DavCo that would cost P2 billion; a housing project of the Filinvest Land Inc. worth P1 billion; and an infrastructure program for the next years of the Davao Doctors Hospital with a budget of P1 billion.
“Our experience is 80 percent to 85 percent of the leads would be actualized,” Dureza said. He disclosed that 42 percent of these 32 companies were processing their documentary requirements, while the other 58 percent were building their infrastructure and other operational requirements.
Dureza said the encouraging trend in investment leads in the last quarter last year continued to pour in January, with 15 inquiries registered, four of them coming from four foreign companies with interest to operate business-process outsourcing in the city.
In Central Mindanao, comprised by the Cotabato provinces and the growth area called Soccsksargen, the five investments reached P1.77 billion last year, with the GRCO Insular Mining Corp. accounting for P1.088 billion alone for its gold-mining exploration in Sultan Kudarat.
The other investments were a mass housing in Lagao, General Santos City, by the Communities General Santos Inc. (P342.983 million); production of chicken egg and other poultry products by BioTech Farms Inc. (P200 million); ship-repair activities on 49 vessels in South Cotabato by Signal Marine Shipyard Corp. (P120.852 million); and export of corrugated boxes by the Allied Pacific Packaging Solutions Inc. (P18.5 million).

Davao call center hiring 800 more workers this year
DAVAO CITY -- Call center Concentrix Philippines, a unit of the US-based Synnex Corp., is expanding, citing the city’s pool of skilled manpower.
The company, which has 600 seats at the Damosa Information Technology Complex, is looking at increasing its work force to 1,400 this year, said Gerardo S. Dumael, site director, before the visit of President Arroyo Wednesday night as part of her “cyber corridor tour.”
Sutherland Global Services -- the largest contact center firm here -- had been reported as targeting 3,000 call center agents this year to double its 1,500-strong work force. Concentrix Philippines’ Mr. Dumael claimed Davao City could become number one in the country in terms of absorption of applicants, with its hiring rate at 7%, compared with 4% for other areas.
A survey by ICT-Davao, a group of companies offering outsourcing and IT services, claimed contact center companies in the city hired 25 out of every 100 people interviewed for a call center job. For transcriptionists, the number is much higher, with half the people interviewed getting a call back.
Davao City is ranked fourth by the Business Processing Association of the Philippines and the Commission on Information and Communications Technology among “next wave zones” for outsourcing because of the availability of infrastructure and manpower as well as low rent and power costs.
Aside from Concentrix Philippines and Sutherland Global Services, the other two call centers in Davao City are CyberCity Teleservices and Western Wats. -- Joel B. Escovilla

PGMA lauds TESDA scholar now employed in call center
By Mai Gevera
Davao City (5 February) -- In her visit to this city for the Cyber Corridor Project week-long tour, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo cited Sarah Flor Ninal, one PGMA scholar who is now absorbed in the business process outsourcing Concentrix at the Damosa IT Park.
"Sarah" wrote a letter to PGMA expressing her gratitude for the scholarship grant given her through the Pangulong Gloria Scholarships Program being implemented by the Technical Education Skills Authority (TESDA).
President Arroyo mentioned Sarah as one of the 44,108 individuals who benefited from the skills development training for BPO and used such opportunity for her career advantage.
Before getting the scholarship, Sarah used to work at INTEL Gateway Park in Cavite but unfortunately lost job when the company closed down its operations in the middle of the global financial crisis.
Jobless and away from home, she decided to return to Davao and applied for the PGS program which was at its peak of implementation in April 2009. She took the Finishing Course for Call Center Agent and received a TESDA certificate last December 18, same year.
Now equipped with proper training plus experience, she was immediately absorbed by Concentrix, a business processing outsourcing company at Damosa IT Park, Lanang, Davao City.
PGMA visited Concentrix Davao to check on the development of the Cyber Corridor Project, one of the development priorities of the PGMA aimed at developing a cyber industry in the country, building upon the potentials and opportunities of ICT investments, services and activities.
Davao City is among the 10 cities being promoted as the Top 10 New Wave Cities billed as the new destinations of the ICT industry. It was chosed for having the talent and manpower, state of industry-relevant infrastructure, local costs and business friendliness.
Apart from the 10 cities are Metro Manila and Metro Cebu which are classified as ICT Centers of Excellence. (PIA XI) [top]

‘has come a long way’
BY JUDY QUIROS

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo lauded Davao City for having the largest number of highly-qualified workers for the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry, saying the city has “come a long way” in a span of only three years.
Mrs. Arroyo was in Davao City on Wednesday night to visit the Concentrix Call Center at the Damosa IT Park in Lanang, Davao City. Her trip was part of her tour of the country’s Cyber Corridor.
The President said Davao City’s inclusion in the ten “next wave” cities for outsourcing in the country is fitting because it has the largest number of qualified workers in outsourcing in the country.
“Davao City has 500,000 highly qualified workers for ICT, which is the highest pool of highly-qualified workers among all other next wave cities. You cannot find this number in other cities in the country,” Mrs. Arroyo said.
Based on the Davao City Outsourcing Industry Primer, the Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) in its Asian Cities of the Future Awards of 2007- 2008 ranked Davao City in the Top 5 Best in Human Resource and Number 1 in Asian Youngest Cities (% Population under 25 years of age).
It further said Davao’s high literacy rate accounts for the nearly 470,000 high-quality workers.
Mrs. Arroyo said Davao City has come a long way in a span of three years as far as ICT is concerned because in sum, 18 call centers were developed employing a total of 7,000 employees.
In such a brief period, the city has developed three PEZA-accredited IT sites, the Damosa IT Park, and the facilities for ICT provided by real estate companies Ayala Land, Robinsons Land Corp., and SM.
Mrs. Arroyo then announced that there are six more applying for ICT development in the city.
She said the development of the Davao International Airport (DIA) is crucial in acquiring uninterrupted growth in the city by placing Davao as one of the cyber corridors in the country.
The Cyber Corridor is one of five development areas/regions mapped out in the 2006 SuperRegion development strategy of the Arroyo administration.
The 10 Next Wave Cities for outsourcing are Metro Laguna , Metro Cavite, Iloilo City, Davao City, Bacolod City, Angeles-Clark-Mabalacat, Baliuag-Marilao-Meycauyan, Cagayan de Oro, Malolos-Calumpit, and Lipa City.
Mrs. Arroyo recalled that in her first SONA she vowed to create wealth by developing labor intensive such as ICT.
She said her aim gained with the significant and continuing growth of the industry.
Updates furnished by the national government showed that BPO industry earnings were projected at $7.3 billion in 2009 up from mere $24 million in 2000 while employment soared up to 446,000 2, 400 in 2000. It is eventually projected to reach 1 million.
Mrs. Arroyo also attributed the industry’s growth to the government support through the facilitation of BPO scholarship programs which posted at P1.6 billion, and other support projects such as the creation of the Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CITCC)
She said the country’s ICT industry is now challenging that of India, which is tagged as top in the global ICT industry.
“The IT industry is part of the legacy I will leave. Knowledge revolution will lead us to the first world,” she said.
After a very brief interaction with the ICT players, Mrs. Arroyo left at around 8:00 p.m for Manila.

Star of Davao, Star of MYMP:
what does Juliet want to tell Nina, Juris
BY LANLEY "PAPA LENCH" M. GUILLERMO

“In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.” Albert Einstein’s famous line lite-rally came to life when MYMP’s “usual” setback came about all over again; a vocalist heading off. Thorny as it feels following the departure of Juris Fernandez due to “irre-concilable professional differences” MYMP’s founder/guitarist Chin Alcantara made loads of discovering opportunities from other artists. Later last month, he declared the search was over and moves on with a new vocalist, Star of Davao IV’s Juliet Bahala to clinch over a spot left by Juris. A humble daughter of a Construction Worker and Manicurista, Juliet, from Davao’s local music scene creates a massive career take off after besting 15 other candidates in the audition. Lench-tertainment proudly shares a brief interview with Juliet:
Papa Lench: Hi Juliet, Welcome to Lench-tertainment, Congratulations! You are now Davao’s newest Pride. How’s the feeling of being the lead vocal for MYMP?
Juliet: Thank you Papa Lench! Ofcourse, I’m so happy, excited, napi-pressure din.
Papa Lench: We know that you auditioned for this, how were you selected?
Juliet: Yes po, actually, I was referred by RnB singer, Thor to Chin since Thor is also from Davao and we’ve been friends since 2007 when I joined star of Davao. I submitted my profile, demos and photos. I think they had 15 applicants and they decided to pick me as their new vocalist. I felt extremely happy! Ganun kabilis ang mga pangyayari.
Papa Lench: Now that you’re going national, how does it affect you personally?
Juliet: Papa Lench, we know naman diba na ibang mundo na ang pinasukan ko ngayon. Ako kasi di masyadong sanay makipag usap sa media, pero kahit papaano, na overcome ko naman yung hiya hiya factor ko. Right now, I need to be strong talaga, lalo nang hiwalay ako sa family ko.
Papa Lench: Given a chance to meet Nina and Juris, ano ang sasabihin mo sa kanila?
Juliet: I’ll tell them na idol ko sila simula noon pa. hehe I’ll also tell them na I’ll try harder to do my job as the new lead vocals para hindi naman masayang yung pinaghirapan nila para sa grupo noon.
Papa Lench: They say that career and love life don’t mix well, How’s your love life doing now?
Juliet: Actually di ko pa iniisip ang about sa lovelife ngayon eh. Right now po kasi, I really love to sing. I’m doing this for my family and ofcourse para na rin sa sarili ko. This is my passion kasi eh, yung love..darating din naman yan in time, kung darating man, why now? Hehe Let’s just wait and see.
Papa Lench: Juliet, tell us about the recipe of your success.
Juliet: Honestly, I don’t know. I guess I just really love and enjoy what I’m doing.
Papa Lench: That’s it? That would really be simple if you love what you do and do what you love. I’m so proud of you, Juliet. Thank you very much for your time! Do you wish to say something to Daily Mirror readers?
Juliet: Thank you po Papa Lench, sana po abangan nila ang bagong MYMP. New sound, New Music, and ofcourse New Members. Our band wished na sana tuloy tuloy ang suporta ninyo sa amin and sana keep on reading Daily Mirror. Thank you Lenchter-tainment for having me here and to you Kuya Lench. Maraming Salamat po.
Even before Juliet bagged her new role in the industry, she made her way to the top when she joined Pinoy Idol in GMA but eventually plunged down in the final round. She knew she had to deal with criticisms like PI Judge Jolina Magdangal remarked her as “Baduy”, referring to her wardrobe as passé. According to her, being an artist calls for a great responsibility and instead of bragging about what her Voice can offer, she should be ready taking negative comments and evaluate if it has integrity at all. Her family had been through a lot after her Father met an accident making him partially incapable Of working, but her mother stood up and so did she. Geared up with talent and will, she sang for Several events and her earnings helped pay bills and food. Everyone loves a success story though her Achievements made some people envious of her. We are yet to see another Dabawenya soar high but Every artist needs support. Will we? Till next time my dear readers. Please don’t miss the hottest news In the morning, Una Ka Bai, Una sa Balita! That’s on weekdays at 7am only from GMA Channel 5 with Derf Maiz, Sarah Hilomen, MK Sobrecarey, Mama Grasya and yours truly. I Love you All! Papa Lench :)

jhunix February 5th, 2010, 03:59 AM British aerospace firm still prefers the Philippines as site of its $40-M Asian manufacturing facility (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/newreply.php?do=postreply&t=523821)
Written by Manuel T. Cayon / Reporter

DAVAO CITY—The head of the Board of Investments (BOI) here claimed that a British aerospace company has assured the Philippines that the country was the preferred site of its manufacturing facility of galleys and other items of future Airbus planes.
Gil Dureza, chief of three BOI regional offices, said the British Aerospace (BAE) told the BOI in November last year that the Philippines was its final choice of the country where it would put up its $40-million facility.
It was the latest communication sent by BAE after a lull of several months, when in January last year the company communicated to Philippine investment officials that it has included the country on the short list of five countries in Asia to host its production plant for plane parts. The communication was relayed by the British Embassy that time.
Dureza said his regional office has recommended three locations in Davao region as probable sites: the Hijo Port town in Madaum, Tagum City, already awarded the accreditation of the Philippine Export Processing Zone; Santa Cruz town and Digos City, both of Davao del Sur.
Dureza previously told business reporters here last year that Davao City was mentioned by BAE as highly preferred.
Dureza said that the BOI in Manila said the briefing paper of BAE stated that the proposed manufacturing facility would produce “galleys and other items for the next generation of Airbus aircraft”.
The galley is the area passengers first see upon boarding, an Internet posting said. The galley has counterspace that stores meals and drawers containing ice and sodas or plates and glasses.
The company is a leading UK designer and manufacturer of aircraft- interior products and solutions for the commercial, business jet and military aircraft markets, according to the project brief given to the BOI.
Dureza said the company “is in the midst of manufacturing the most advanced series of new generation of passenger aircraft most especially the Airbus 380, the single largest passenger aircraft to date.”
The BOI said BAE is one of the major contractors and partners in the European Air Defense System (EADS).
The company has inquired into the BOI if the prospective sites have available support infrastructures, support industry and details on transportation network. BAE would like to know the city’s road network, the “typical costs and transit times for both passenger and freight services to nearest airport and seaport;” the airports and seaports, specifically their distance from the potential facility and the details of both the airport and the seaport handling capacity; and the shipping costs from local seaport to nearest seaport to Toulouse, Marseilles, France.
The company would also like to know the details of the support industry, and include the name of the company, contact details, capacity of firms engaged in the manufacture of metal, machined parts, fabricated metal parts, electrical work like loom or harness manufacture, electrical cable printing, plastics, vacuum-formed parts, composite and injection molding.

Sana tinanong yung tungkol sa open skies status ng Davao. A big hindrance in bringing more Japanese investors to the city is the lack of direct flights. If local airlines can't afford to create them, then it should be opened up to other carriers.

It is very hard to employ even 10% of that population with ICT alone. We will need to industrialize through factories. (But is that even feasible with China getting all the attention in manufacturing?)

In my opinion, Davao should not only be known as a tourism, agro-tourism and agricultural center of the Philippines. It must also build it own industrial capability so that industrial development will come to Mindanao instead of just concentrating industrialization in few areas in the Philippines like Metro Manila, CALABARZON, CLARK-SUBIC CORRIDOR, CEBU province and ILIGAN-CAGAYAN DE ORO.
Although a controlled agro-industrial development must be pursued to avoid the mistakes done by these aforementioned urban growth centers.

Rall February 6th, 2010, 03:41 PM GOING FOR NO. 1 IN BPO : Arroyo successor told: Beat India (http://services.inquirer.net/print/print.php?article_id=20100206-251560)
By Norman Bordadora, TJ Burgonio
Philippine Daily Inquirer
Posted date: February 06, 2010
TAKING OFF FROM PRESIDENT GLORIA MACAPAGAL-ARROYO’s proud announcement that she will bequeath a multi-billion-peso business process outsourcing (BPO) industry, the administration’s economic managers are posing this challenge to her successor: beat India.
The next leader should explore the industry’s potential to grow to $100 billion in 2010 with a view to dislodging India from its top perch, the National Economic Development Authority said Friday.
“If there’s something that the next administration should stress, I’d say it’s the wave of the present. We’re now No. 2 globally. So let’s aim for No. 1,’’ Dennis Arroyo, NEDA director for national planning and policy, said.
In her tour of the country’s cyber corridor this week, Ms Arroyo said the country’s BPO industry had become a “powerhouse,’’ challenging India for supremacy in the industry.
Its revenues skyrocketed from $0.02 billion in 2000 to $7.3 billion in 2009, second only to India’s $9-billion revenue for call centers. It now employs 446,000, up from 2,400 in 2000, she said.
But a member of deposed President Joseph Estrada’s economic team said the BPO industry here started during the Estrada administration.
Former Trade Secretary Jose Pardo said that it was during the Estrada administration that the interpretation of the law that created the Philippine Economic Zone Authority was expanded to include the information technology industry, consequently giving it tax exemptions.
Pardo said this was instrumental in changing the industry climate to encourage BPO businesses to invest in the country.
Next wave cities
To propel the industry to No. 1, Dennis Arroyo advised the next administration to expand the “next wave cities’’ program by investing in digital infrastructure and human development.
The next wave cities, he explained, comprised the 10 urban centers from Central Luzon to Mindanao that now hosted 750 BPO and information technology companies.
“So far, we have BPO and ICT (information and communication technology) sites all centered mostly in Metro Manila, Cebu and Davao cities. We should expand the progress to other cities in the Calabarzon area, the Bulacan area, Visayas and Dumaguete, and other cities in Mindanao,’’ he said.
For starters, the next administration should continue wiring public schools to the Internet, and promote the use of WiMAX, which functioned like a wi-fi but covered a larger area, Arroyo said.
“There are now more than 5,000 high schools with computer laboratories, while almost 4,000 are connected to the Net. That should continue,’’ he said.
Department of IT
Arroyo also proposed that a legislation creating a Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT) to oversee the country’s ICT development should be given priority by the next administration.
“Any President can just dissolve the commission,’’ he said, referring to the Commission on Information and Communication Technology. “We should have a permanent DICT.’’

A short film, in Japanese dialect with english subtitle but will be shot in Davao City.
The film will be centered on two Japanese descendants in Davao, who after five years of communication through internet, they finally meet in person. Strolling around San Pedro Street and taking pictures in the park, they talk about the history of the Japanese people in Davao and their dream of going to Japan.

Davao container port to be modernized (http://www.dailymirror.ph/Feb-2010/biz1.html)
MANILA (PNA) — The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) has announced it is planning to modernize Davao’s container port within the year due to the rising number of local and foreign shipping lines calling on the said facility.
The PPA made this announcement shortly after successfully upgrading the North Harbor and Batangas ports.
PPA general manager Oscar Sevilla said Davao’s container port deserves further development as it is the country’s second biggest port and Mindanao’s largest.
At the moment, cargo-handling operations in Davao are contracted to a subsidiary of International Container Terminal Services Inc. The burden of port development remains with the PPA.
“After Batangas port, which we already privatized, we will be giving Davao port top priority in our port development,” Sevilla said.
“With additional shipping lines set to come in the next couple of weeks led by NYK, we have to improve the facilities of the port to accommodate additional traffic from these carriers,” he added.
The PPA general manager said that Davao port is ready for a massive makeover.
Cargo throughout in Davao increased by five percent to 3.233 million metric tons (MMT) in 2009 and is expected to climb to 3.708 MMT this year.
For the next three years, conventional cargo is seen growing about 25,000 metric tons from this year to 2010 while container cargo will increase annually by 12,000 TEUs from 258,104 in 2008 to 309,792 by 2010.
The bulk of cargo will come from the domestic trade, projected to rise to 121,348 metric tons by 2010 from 101,101 metric tons last year.
For the same period, foreign cargo is expected to increase by 4,000 metric tons annually.
Since 2000, Davao has consistently posted cargo throughput growth of about eight percent except in 2001 and 2008 when it registered a three percent drop.
