Davao
Art P. Boncato, president, Davao Tourism Association sent me this email.
I read your article today at The Philipine Star and I would like to thank you for thinking about Davao. It is very seldom that we see opinion makers like your position and declare Cebu and Davao as tourist destinations with "decent airport terminal buildings and better tourism environment".
Davao, indeed, is a wonderful city with many potentials that are slowly being fulfilled. We are putting our unified efforts through the Davao Convention and Visitors Cooperative Bureau (DCVB) to turn it into the next international destination of the country. Our new and functional airport can support over a million visitors a year. We have at least 2,900 hotel rooms of various categories and support services that make for a unique, memorable and comfortable stay. And crucial to our success, we are working very hard to get new international connections to add to our flights from Singapore and Indonesia.
Certainly, things are looking up in Davao. We just placed our bid to host the 20th Philippine Advertising Congress in 2007. We pray that we host it as the high-value PR premium that comes with it will surely boost our efforts in reaching out to our markets in saying that all is well in Davao!
Once again, thank you for the media space you accorded Davao
keep our fingers crossed!!
support davao city!!

Concrete structures such as LRT System? The local government assigned a private firm to conduct the feasibility study few months ago. This is also one of the projects being promoted by the local government / DIPC to some investors.
Industrial Parks? Have you ever been to where Union Cement is located? We do have industrial parks located in the northern area of Davao. First Mindanao Industrial Park Corporation located in Sasa, Ilang Agro Industrial Estate Corp, and First Oriental Business and Industrial Park to name a few.
Industrial Parks should be located outside of the downtown area. PTA ground is so small to be developed as one.
That's a good idea there! We have wide lots, wide areas! I've been to Calinan before, and the viability of the area as a commercial district cum industrial complex might materialize in the near future.
But would it be possible to make call centers there, ha, bai TJ, in Calinan? :D :D :D

Ady001 August 11th, 2006, 03:51 AM As a matter of fact, no other city in Mindanao has vehicular underpass and flyovers. Outside Manila only Davao and Cebu in the Visayas have these infrastructures.
That's for crisis matters. An anticipation for things to come.

Ady001 August 11th, 2006, 03:56 AM Governor Frank W. Carpenter Boulevard. That's the old name of that portion in Agdao. Here's his short biography:
Frank W. Carpenter
Hospital Steward, United States Army
Executive Secretary of the Philippine Government
Frank W. Carpenter relieved General Pershing on December 16, 1913, to become the first civil governor of the new department. The Moros made great strides during the governorship of this capable man.
In 1913, the peace-loving Mr. Frank W. Carpenter became the first civil governor of Mindanao and Sulu.
The Moros, convicted of Carpenter's sincerity in his offer of peace with honor, laid down their arms and accepted American rule.
Governor Carpenter, by his able administration of Moro affairs and his personal affability, accomplished within a few years what Spanish and later American soldiers had failed to achieve in many years of warfare.
He was also listed as the first civilian governor of the undivided Cotabato Province (or all of Mindanao Provinces). Also note that a famous park in downtown Zamboanga City is named after General John Pershing, the predecessor of Governor Carpenter.
I always believed Davao had a share of famous world individuals making for its streets, look:
Camus Street: Named after Albert Camus, the ex-friend of Jean Paul Sartre.
Carpenter Street: Named after the Carpenters, the band that made many songs in Karaoke.
McArthur Highway: The place named after the hero from Samar.
BTW, who named Camus street? I'm just curious if there really is such a thing as "Philosophers Guild of Davao" and their place is Camus.

Here is an article I profusely typed. This will be a long series so please bear with the long text. This was lifted from Lydia Yu-Jose's Japan Views the Philippines:
Voices from Davao
(Part one of a chapter 6 from the book JAPAN VIEWS THE PHILIPPINES by Lydia Yu-Jose)
This chapter will focus on the views of two individual Japanese, and of Okinawans in Davao. The two Japanese were Furukawa Yoshizo, founder of the Furukawa Plantation Company Incorporated (Furukawa Takushoku Kabushiki Kaisha), and Masaki Kichiemon, one of the members of the board of directors of the Ota Development Corporation, and one time president of the Davao Japanese Club. They would represent the two largest corporations in Davao, while the Okinawans, a minority group in Japan, would represent the largest Japanese group in Davao.
After an exposition of their views on their problems in Davao, reactions from Japan to these problems will be presented.
Furukawa’s Arrival in Davao
Furukawa’s arrival in Davao was not accidental, unlike that of Ota Kyousaburo, who drifted to Davao partly by fate and partly by foresight and economic necessity. Neither was his arrival similar to Kanegae’s in Manila, who reached the Philippines penniless and unsure of what his future in this foreign land would be. Ota and Kanegae typified the Japanese immigrants to the Philippines in the first decades of the twentieth century. Furukawa, on the other hand, did not have to go through uncertainties when he set foot on Davao in 1913. While Furukawa was not like the typical Japanese who came to Davao in the 1920s as he was well-educated and financially stable, he had something in common with most of them: a feeling of certainty of what their life in Davao would be.
Furukawa was born in Shiga Prefecture in 1888. By the time he was to enter college, he had been exposed to Jitsugyou no Nihon, a periodical that published articles about the nan’yo, especially its rubber cultivation. He had also been influenced by his elder brother who believed that it was better to be self-employed than to work for somebody. Under these influences, he decided to enroll at the Agricultural College of Tokyo Imperial University in 1910.
When he graduated in July 1913, he had already decided that it was in the Philippines that he would like to apply his training in agriculture. His decision was influenced by relatives and acquaintances of relatives in the Philippines. Moreover, an employee of Itou-Chuubei-Shouten in Manila, whose proprietor was a cousin of Furukawa, also suggested that he venture into Manila Hemp production. He also had a chance to meet with Ota Kyousaburo who was then vacationing in Tokyo. In addition, he had a chance to visit a hemp factory in Japan. Before coming to the Philippines, he underwent training sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for overseas worker (kaigai gyou renshuu) and on 26 November 1913, he arrived in Manila. He was met by no less than the manager of the Manila branch of Itou-Chuubei-Shouten. He lost no time in receiving instructions in Spanish from a Spanish tutor, Luis Peres.
In January 1914, he was guided to Tayabas. The following month, he took a ship for Davao. Among his fellow passengers was the wife of Ota, who was bringing with her future brides for two officers of Ota Development Corporation. In Davao, he visited the Ota Development Corporation and was guided by Ota himself, on horseback, to his abaca and coconut plantations. He proceeded to Zamboanga and saw the lumber yards of Ota. He went back to Manila in May, and returned to Japan the following month, convinced that he should come back to Davao. In November 1914, he was back in Manila. With the legal assistance of an American lawyer, he established the Furukawa Plantation, and registered its articles of incorporation on December 28.
The main office of the Furukawa plantation was in Daliaon. Its initial capital was 100,000 pesos (one peso=one yen). In 1921 it increased to 500,000 pesos. By 1925 its capital was 1,500,000 pesos and in 1941, it was 10,000,000 pesos.
Until the establishment of the Furukawa Plantation, the Ota Development Corporation had a virtual monopoly in Davao’s economy. The social life of the Japanese in Davao centered around this company. With the establishment of the Furukawa Plantation, a strong competitor was born. Furukwa, writing in the 1950s, remembered with bitterness what he considered attempts by the pioneer company to block his progress. The competition between Ota and Furukawa did not go unnoticed to Davao visitors in the 1930s and ‘40s.
The Furukawa-Ota rivalry may not be a good indication of Japanese business practices abroad, but it is a potent argument against the theory that the Japanese businessmen and laborers were advance parties of a planned military invasion of the Philippines. Rather hthe rivalry is a strong proof that the Japanese in the Philippines, even as late as the 1920s, came to the Philippines to seek their own individual economic advancement. They were not, at least not by the 1930s, fired with nationalistic motivations, nor inspired by dreams of Pan-Asianism.
Furukawa had such a strong influence on the Japanese community, as well as on the Japanese visitors who came to observed conditions ion Davao, that Consul Kaneko Toyoji, in a letter to the foreign office in 1935, complained that visitors who came to Davao tended to neglect the Consulate, and availed, instead, of Furukawa’s hospitality. They stayed in his house, ate there, and spent most of their time at the Furukawa facilities.
As a result, it was doubtful if they got a balanced view of conditions in Davao. Kaneko thus requested the Foreign office of their intention to visit, and not to go directly to the Furukawa Plantation, but rather to, drop by the Consulate with a proper introductory letter from the Foreign Office, and to allow themselves to be advised by the Davao Consul as to places to be visited, and people to be interviewed.
The Davao Land Problem
A number of laws and orders affected the Japanese in Davao, but what disturbed them most were the laws and orders that threatened their rights over the lands they were cultivating. Ota Kyousaburo first acquired a piece of land from the aboriginal Bagobo tribe in 1906. However, he was not informed that his purchase was illegal because tribal lands were public lands, and under the Public Land Act of 1903, foreign individuals had no right to own public lands. Ota did a little research and found out that the Act permitted any legally organized corporation to purchase or lease agricultural lands of the public domain up to a maximum of 1,024 hectares, leases being for twenty-fiver years and renewable for an additional twenty-five years. He solved his problem by establishing a corporation, which was granted 1,015 hectares of public land.
In 1918 a new Public Land Act was passed by the Philippine Legislature, which restricted land purchases to Filipino citizens, but it was vetoed by the United States President, as a result of the efforts of the Japanese ambassador to the United States, and out of U.S. consideration for Japan, who had been an ally in World War I. The Japanese, however, enjoying the wartime boom in hemp sales, indiscreetly displayed their wealth by conspicuous purchase of lands. This promoted the Philippine Legislature to pass for the second time a new public land act in 1919.
On 15 May 1919, the Davao Japanese Club, now wary of the new land act, sent a letter of appeal to the Japanese foreign minister. The appeal stressed that around sixty Japanese agricultural companies, and around 7,000 Japanese would be unjustly affected by the law. Its passage was considered by the Japanese as an ungrateful act on the part of the Philippine government, who seemed to forget that twenty-years earlier, Davao had been a desolate land, and its present development was due to the 7,000 hard-working Japanese, now haunted by anxiety brought about by the new land act. To avoid an economic crisis that would surely result from the enforcement of the law, it was requested that the Foreign Office intervene, so that the United States President would not approve the law.
My father also told me some Japanese made their way to Davao via Bagiuo , they are labor workers who built Kennon road and was encouraged by the government to settle in Davao , he was told by my grandfather who is a kapatas in the Kennon road project.

Wear your attitude!
By Henrylito D. Tacio
Regarding Henry
AMERICAN composer and lyricist Irving Berlin, who composed the "Heaven Watch the Philippines" while entertaining the American liberation troops in Leyte in 1945, once said: "Life is 10 percent what you make it and 90 percent how you take it."
One day, a father and his rich family took his son to a trip to the country with the firm purpose to show him how poor people can be. They spent a day and a night in the farm of a very poor family. When they got back from their trip the father asked his son, "How was the trip?"
"Very good Dad!" the son quickly replied. The boy also answered affirmatively when the father asked, "Did you see how poor people can be?"
The father wanted to know if his son really gained knowledge from the trip. So, he inquired, "And what did you learn?"
The son answered, "I saw that we have a dog at home, and they have four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of the garden; they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lamps in the garden; they have the stars. Our patio reaches to the front yard, they have a whole horizon."
The father was speechless, nonetheless. And before he can utter a single word, the son concluded, "Thanks, Dad, for showing me how poor we are!"
The father was indeed surprised by his son's remarks. Perhaps, he never knew the words of Og Mandino, author of 'The Greatest Salesman in the World.' He wrote: "Take the attitude of a student: never be to big to ask questions and never know to much to learn something new."
"I believe the single most significant decision I can make on a day-to-day basis is my choice of attitude," says American evangelical Christian pastor Charles Swindoll. "It is more important than my past, my education, my bankroll, my successes or failures, fame or pain, what other people think of me or say about me, my circumstances, or my position. Attitude keeps me going or cripples my progress. It alone fuels my fire or assaults my hope. When my attitudes are right, there is no barrier too high, no valley too deep, no dream too extreme, no challenge too great for me."
In psychology, attitudes are positive or negative views of an "attitude object": that is, a person, behavior or event. People can also be "ambivalent" towards a target, meaning that they simultaneously possess a positive and a negative attitude. Our attitudes shape who we are, and how we live our lives.
"Weakness of attitude becomes weakness of character," said scientist Albert Einstein, who played a leading role in formulating the special and general theories of relativity. To which American psychologist Han Selye added: "Adopting the right attitude can convert a negative stress into a positive one."
"Any fact facing us is not as important as our attitude toward it, for that determines our success or failure," wrote Norman Vincent Peale, the man behind 'The Power of Positive Thinking.' "The way you think about a fact may defeat you before you ever do anything about it. You are overcome by the fact because you think you are."
Once upon a time, there was a king who ruled a prosperous country. One day, he went for a trip to some distant areas of his country. When he was back to his palace, he complained that his feet were very painful, because it was the first time that he went for such a long trip, and the road that he went through was very rough and stony. He then ordered his people to cover every road of the entire country with leather. Definitely, this would need thousands of cows' skin, and would cost a huge amount of money.
Then one of his wise servants dared himself to tell the king, "Why do you have to spend that unnecessary amount of money? Why don't you just cut a little piece of leather to cover your feet?"
The king was surprised, but he later agreed to his suggestion, to make a "shoe" for himself.
The lesson of the story: change your attitude. The world does not revolve around you; instead you revolve around the world. Tom Blandi reminds: "Our attitudes control our lives. Attitudes are a secret power working twenty-four hours a day, for good or bad. It is of paramount importance that we know how to harness and control this great force."
Oftentimes, we have more sadness than happiness. We have more problems than solutions. But it's our attitude towards these events that can make or unmake us. Indian freedom fighter Morarji Desai rhapsodizes: "Life at any time can become difficult: life at any time can become easy. It all depends upon how one adjusts oneself to life."
Susanna Clark adds: "You've got to sing like you don't need the money. You've got to love like you'll never get hurt. You've got to dance like there's nobody watching. You've got to come from the heart, if you want it to work."
There was this story of a businessman, who was highly critical of his competitors' storefront windows. "Why, they are the dirtiest windows in town," he claimed.
Fellow business people grew tired of the man's continual criticism and nitpicking comments about the windows. One day over coffee, the businessman carried the subject just too far.
Before leaving, a fellow storeowner suggested the man get his own windows washed. He followed the advice, and the next day at coffee, he exclaimed, "I can't believe it. As soon as I washed my windows, my competitor must have cleaned his too. You should see them shine."
Confucius once declared, "Don't complain about the snow on your neighbor's roof when your own doorstep is unclean." Or, to quote the words of Robert Conklin, "It's not the situation. It's your reaction to the situation."
Whatever situation you will encounter in life, handle it well. Tennis player Chris Evert knows this very much: "If you can react the same way to winning and losing, that's a big accomplishment. That quality is important because it stays with you the rest of your life, and there's going to be a life after tennis that's a lot longer than your tennis life."
Whether a glass is half full or half empty depends on the attitude of the person looking at it. Frederick Landbridge averred: "Two men look out the same prison bars; one sees mud and the other stars." Ralph Waldo Emerson contributed: "To different minds, the same world is a hell, and a heaven."
We live in a world that is engulfed by celebrities, famous and rich. Not every one of us can become like them. But if you can't be a star, then be a cloud. If you can be a tree, then be a grass, but the best grass of them all. Nobel Peace Prize winner Martin Luther King, Jr. advised: "If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the host of heaven and earth will pause to say, 'Here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.'"
davaoeagle August 11th, 2006, 04:43 AM Davao City trader is ‘shellfish king’
By Rizalene P. Acac
ONLY one trader was accredited to distribute shellfishes to the different public markets in the city, an official of the City Agriculturist Office said. City Agriculturist Amando C. Barbadillo, Jr. said only the APB trading owned by Alexis Beronia was able to comply with the requirements for accreditation of shellfish traders.
He said Barbadillo put up a laboratory in Ma-a capable of detecting shellfishes contaminated with Red Tide. In a meeting, all the shellfish vendors also agreed to get what they sell from the said company. “We want to make sure that all shellfishes brought here in Davao City are safe,” he said.
This is also by virtue of City Ordinance No. 0173 which enhances consumer protection by mandating shellfish traders to establish testing centers for the products they market to vendors. Liza Roxas, CAO senior agriculturist, added that they also conduct monitoring to ensure the maximum compliance of the vendors.
She said they examine the delivery receipt from the vendors and compare this to the list that the company gives them. Once a vendor fails to show any proof that the shellfishes were examined the operatives of the office would then confiscate and dispose it. Barbadillo, however, said they don’t want ARB to monopolize the market that is why they are encouraging small vendors to form their group and set-up the facilities like those of ARB.
He said the Seafood Vendors Association in Bankerohan is starting to comply with the requirements. The source of shellfishes for consumers in the city and other nearby provinces comes from Mati, Surigao and Leyte, places where the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources cyclically issue a Red Tide warning.

The power of paint
By Gary Covington
AS A rule, we don't take much notice of buildings, do we? They're just there. The very fabric of town or city and yet we almost ignore them. Only if it is featured in a news item or when it is being torn down, going up in flames or more rarely, being declared open by some grandee do we sit up and say "hey, isn't that the, you know what building on thingy street?"
I like buildings, for their history, their design, their sheer awfulness (lots of them) or plain eccentricity. There used to be a wonderfully incongruous building on McArthur Highway between Sandawa Road and the Ateneo de Davao University called the Tourist Lodge. I am not sure what the place was (although I heard plenty of tales) but it grabbed the eye, couldn't fail. Along its frontage were arranged life-sized and painted cutouts of folks dancing and having a good time. The building is gone now (burnt down?), the empty lot no doubt awaiting a gas station or a fast food company with deep pockets.
Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo
There was (and I'm pleased to say still is) another piece of eccentricity near Magsaysay Park at the junction of Monteverde Avenue and Alvarez Street. An outpost of the Prudential Bank and obviously at some point an important one (maybe the first head office?) as the frontage is done up like a Greek temple complete with fluted columns and a faux gable end, decorated with statuettes of men and women wearing toga.
For years, the place was in decay and inviting a demolition crew, but just this last week (it's a bit off the beaten track) I saw that the building, spruced up with green and yellow paint and is now a pleasant canteen rejoicing in the name of Joe Cool's (The World's Worst restaurant)!
Two buildings. One, except for memories and snapshots, gone forever and the other still standing proud and livened up with a coat of paint.
Paint does that. It brightens, enlivens, and draws the eye. Many of Davao's newer constructions, realizing this, have reached for the paint pot and splashed it all over. It is as if to say, "hey, look at me in my bright new clothes.
Here are a few of them, some on main thoroughfares and some tucked away in quiet corners.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Guys can you help Gary Covington on his query about Tourist Lodge.... calling Ateneo boys!
gusto ninyo Joe Cool's ang meet :D
tj_brewed August 11th, 2006, 04:49 AM That's a good idea there! We have wide lots, wide areas! I've been to Calinan before, and the viability of the area as a commercial district cum industrial complex might materialize in the near future.
But would it be possible to make call centers there, ha, bai TJ, in Calinan? :D :D :D
in Calinan? Why not? What made it impossible? Convergys here in Cebu is located in Arcenas Estate (not in downtown area) Sykes Asia Cebu is located in Maguikay Mandaue (not a downtown area). In Manila, Convergys Alabang is located in an IT Zone far from the downtown area. Teletech in Rizal is located far from its main business district. So what made you think its impossible to build an IT Zone with call centers in Calinan? Aber?
As a matter of fact, I would prefer locations such as Mintal, Calinan, Toril, to Panacan as sites of future developments in Davao so that development will sprawl upto these locations.
We have only used 10% of our total land area for urbanity. Why not expand?
tj_brewed August 11th, 2006, 04:57 AM Maayo man TJ, but I think we should build some critical areas for development. If Davao will be congested in the near future, basig ma-suffocate pod ang green belt sa pollution if possible.
I apologize but this is KINDERGARTEN SCIENCE!
Pls take note of the following lil bro:
- Vegetation purifies the air by removing gaseous pollutants by absorbing them through pores in the leaf surface.
- Particulate pollution is trapped and filtered by leaves, stems and twigs, and is washed to the ground by rainfall.
- Trees absorb carbon dioxide - the main greenhouse gas. One acre of trees can absorb as much as 4 tons of carbon dioxide a year, the same amount as a car driven 26,000 miles.
- Trees save energy. Shade trees reduce air-conditioning needs up to 50%.
- Reduced energy use means reduced energy production and associated pollution.
- Trees store carbon dioxide and produce enough oxygen from one acre for 18 people every day.
Need to say more?

tj_brewed August 11th, 2006, 09:36 AM Message from the City Mayor
August 11, 2006
www.kadayawan.com
Once again, the diverse and multi-cultural peoples of Davao, whom I am proud to lead, are celebrating the world-famous Kadayawan sa Dabaw Festival on August 14-20, 2006.
Now on its 21st year, Kadayawan has truly lived up to its name which symbolizes everything that is good, excellent, beautiful and bountiful. Recognized nationwide as the “Festival of Festivals”, our Kadayawan has gone global as Dabawenyos from all over the world choose this time for their homecoming and reunion to celebrate our diverse culture and nature.
This year, we are proud to host the Philippine Women’s University Global Reunion and the Ateneo de Manila National Reunion. We are also welcoming home more than 150 Dabawenyos of Las Vegas, Nevada, USA while our kababayans in Hong Kong and elsewhere are also organizing their own Kadayawan mini-festivals overseas. Our young people will also dance in our famous “Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan” to promote the National Youth Day, which we are hosting in November.
The diverse people of Davao have become truly global. We have indeed conquered the world for we are practically everywhere now – blazing trails, setting new standards, making milestones in that trademark Dabawenyo pioneering spirit in the global arena.
This is what we celebrate in this year’s Kadayawan – being One People wherever we may be in the world.
Madayaw Dabaw!
Rodrigo R. Duterte
City Mayor of Davao.

Mindanao tribes unite in ‘Agongan ug Kulintangan’
August 11, 2006
www.kadayawan.com
The 21st Kadayawan sa Dabaw’s Agongan ug Kulintangan event will showcase indigenous music and performing skills in the playing of agong, kulintang, gabang and other indigenous musical instruments participated by the indigenous elders and young enthusiasts of the tribal arts on 17 August 2006, 4-8 PM at Rizal Park and 7:30-11:30 PM at Matina Town Square.
More than 100 performers from various indigenous tribes of Mindanao will perform in the Agongan ug Kulintangan.
Expected to join the presentations are the Buclad Tribal Council (Mandaya, Dibabawon and Mansaka tribes), Lapuyan Cultural Communities (Subanen tribe), Ilian Maguinadanao Community (Maguindanao tribe), B’laan Community of Matan-ao (B’laan tribe), Teduray Community of Upi,Maguindanao (Teduray tribe), Helobung Cultural Troupe (T’boli tribe), Campo Muslim Traditional Musicians of Maguindanao Tribe-Department of Education-ARMM-Palabunibuian (Maguinadanao tribe), Datu Piang Kulintangan (Maguindanao tribe), Kalagan Community of Waan (Kalagan tribe), Maranao Tribe of Lanao del Norte (Maranao tribe), and Tagabawa Higlwanders Association (Tagabawa tribe).
The event is inspired by the richness of indigenous culture of Mindanao and the desire to preserve and promote it. Davao Region alone is home to more living indigenous communities than any region in the Philippines. Davao City has the Bagobo, Clata, Tagabawas, Obo, Manobo, Matigsalog, Ata and the Muslim Kalagan tribes.
Aside from these there are the migrant Muslims like the Tausug, Samal, Maranao and Maguindanao. Davao del Sur has its dominant Kaulo and B’laan. Davao del Norte, Compostela Valley and Davao Oriental have their Dibabawon, Manobo, Sama, Kalagan, Mandaya and Mansaka tribes. Among the neighboring provinces, Bukidnon has its Talaandig and Higaonon, South Cotabato and Saranggani, the T’boli and B’laan; and North Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and Maguindanao their Iranon and Maguindanao.
Visit the official Kadayawan sa Dabaw website at www.kadayawan.com for more information about the festival.

‘Hurawan’ to feature traditional Bagobo rites
August 11, 2006
www.kadayawan.com
A traditional tribal ritual, “Hurawan” will highlight the gallantry and importance of horses in the Bagobo tribe of Davao, scheduled on 18 August 2006, 9 AM to 12 NN at the Tulip-Aplaya Road, Ecoland, Matina.
According to tribal leader Datu Max Gabbao, this ritual has always been a part of the traditions of their tribe since time immemorial. Every year, it was customary for them to hold a three-day celebration in thanksgiving to the Manama (God) for the harvest of the crops, such as corn, rice, fruits, among others.
During the celebration, tribal elders and leaders discuss issues that affect their tribe. They also trade commodities and pacify arguments, if there were such, especially on problems concerning territorial domains of the datus.
On the third day of the celebration, they hold a duel of the horses. The might of the horses symbolizes the supremacy of the datus' leadership and influence. They believe that the virility of the horses reflects that of the datus'.
The datus who would win in the duel get to take home a prize, such as agongs and other valuable articles. Above all, they bring home a sense of pride back to their respective tribes
Horses were also deemed important to Bagobo tribe since these are primarily used as their main mode of transportation, dowries for their children's wedding, as a bond or indemnity whenever a tribe member commits crime to another tribe, or for payment in purchase of land.
Bagobo tribes from Bansalan and Marilog are set to participate in the rites. A “tubad-tubad” or a prayer ritual will be performed to open the event.
The rituals will close with a traditional Bagobo mass tribal wedding and a confirmation ceremony of a “datu” and “biya” at the Gaisano Citimall.

Skyblue_Navyblue August 11th, 2006, 02:24 PM hello davao... hapit lang ko diri kadali. simhot unya balik na work.
lagot ko sa mga tv news networks nato labi na sa ABS-CBN, grabe atong promote sa davao ug mindanao, sila dali ra kaayo makareport ug "BOMBA SA MINDANAO!" instead of just saying "COTABATO" or "JOLO". labon bitaw naay news sa manila dili man nila ibalita nga "BOMBA SA LUZON". biskwit ning mga tawhana ni. lami na kaayo i singgit ug FEDERAL!!!
mao na sila!
same with you....
habagatcentral1 August 11th, 2006, 03:22 PM ^^ Why the sensationalism? To earn credibility? Stop generalizing Mindanao, people here are putting blood, sweat and tears in establishing a peaceful and progressive Mindanao and then destroy the momentum by media?
MEDIA SHOULD HELP REMOVE AWAY THAT "I'M AFRAID OF MINDANAO" SYNDROME NOT INSTIGATE IT AND HELP MINDANAO MOVE FORWARD! They should treat their news as if it is credible and no bias.
One thing that I hate are those people who are very narrow minded with regards to Mindanao! :soapbox:
Napaparanoid na ba sila sa "bomba" ug sa "terorista"? :mad2:
Sulong VisMinda! :horse:
paulkrps August 11th, 2006, 03:32 PM ^^ gyud. sa una pa, mao na nay himo nila. gamayng utot, bulkan ang balita. nya kung makareport, magsigeg singit abit nimo unsa na. mao kaning mga "tabloid" way of reporting dapat ihunong nila kay di ni respectable nga journalism.
habagatcentral1 August 11th, 2006, 03:39 PM ^^ If indeed they are really in the service of the Filipinos, then they should also know how their "Kapamilyas" feel when they are described as such.
The previous bombs that rocked Mindanao? - This is the term media, even in print uses. Why rocked? While most of the people are hardly affected after all (well, with the exception of the victims, the relatives and those who are involved).
This stigma that media gives just wouldn't help progress Mindanao in any way. Kalagot gyud! Dapat fair man sila sa ilaha nga pag-deliver.
Ang konswelo....the grenade blasts in Cotabato were not in the frontpage for today's newspaper issue.

Back at Davao's Kadayawan Festival. Sorry to destroy the mood. Enjoy Kadayawan! :)
paulkrps August 11th, 2006, 03:55 PM @bernie - if your were to analyze the whole thing it's an isolated one. but the media has a way of making "puga" or squeezing the event. would it do them a favour? yes if they were there first. suddenly it becomes a ratings and numbers game. everybody trying to outdo and outbid each other. it's a healthy competition for them but us who are visayans and mindanaoans, we are in the losing end.
@lena - these travel advisories from any embassy are just that - "advisories". they may say travel at your own risk. otherwise they can't physically stop anybody from going there or anywhere with these advisories. just think of this, every time a u.s. travel advisory is issued on mindanao, american nationals are still going there. who are these nationals? from plain tourists to missionaries to businessmen to even their own diplomatic corps. it's up to you to take it with a grain of salt or change your plans. but sometimes these advisories should be specific on which places their nationals should not go or visit. otherwise other places that are peaceful and don't have anything to do with it are affected.

paulkrps August 11th, 2006, 04:31 PM ^^ no probs lena. just this, when you go to davao, just enjoy whatever is offered you, from the sceneries to the hospitality of the people. it will be a waste if you go and be in constant fear that something will happen when in fact nothing will. i think being in this thread has afforded you what we filipinos are as a people. and the fact is, there still is more to know of us. so when you go, be enthralled and be mesmerized. i won't be be saying that we don't have our share of bad apple/s, but enjoy us (i mean the place, people and what we have to offer) as a whole.

scandinavian girl August 11th, 2006, 05:08 PM ^^ no probs lena. just this, when you go to davao, just enjoy whatever is offered you, from the sceneries to the hospitality of the people. it will be a waste if you go and be in constant fear that something will happen when in fact nothing will. i think being in this thread has afforded you what we filipinos are as a people. and the fact is, there still is more to know of us. so when you go, be enthralled and be mesmerized. i won't be be saying that we don't have our share of bad apple/s, but enjoy us (i mean the place, people and what we have to offer) as a whole.
Thanks paul am going to cause I am coming ..:) Sweet of you thank you!
WawaY[625] August 11th, 2006, 05:10 PM ^^ ohhh i thought you were leaving us..that would be very sad..wed no longer have our princess..

Palau tour operators to to bring Palauans to Davao
Davao City (12 August) -- Tour operators from Palau with two different objectives joined the Mindanao Travel and Tour Exposition held at the entertainment plaza of SM City Davao from August 11 to 13, 2006.
Davao, which is an hour and 30 minutes plane ride from Palau, is an interesting destination to tour operator Bryan Clark, managing director of Palau Davao Travel Agency.
Clark saw the potential of Davao as the market for the residents of Palau.
“There are a lot of interesting things here that we do not have in our island,” he said.
He said Palau is an island endowed with rich marine natural resources and good sites for diving. But we do not have the kind of facilities that you have here.
He said his purpose is to bring Palauans to Davao firstly for shopping saying that the goods here are about two thirds less in cost back home.
“Our residents are awed with the malls here like SM having a wide selections of what they need and also the movie houses because we do not have theaters in Palau,” he said.
He said these are the things that Palauans are up to and they have arranged packages according to the needs of the travelers.
“We can go high end or the budget packages. We can have four days and three nights package plus other inclusions like day tours and breakfast at $495 in a cheap hotel as an example,” he said.
He also said that Palauans also look at Davao for medical tourism, in fact some few families from Palau are already here for dental and eye check up as they discovered that the facilities are excellent and the cost is very affordable.
He said they also want to have in their markets fresh fruits and vegetables that are abundant here even as he said that they expect to have Durian in the island come Christmas.
There are already talks going on among the authorities on quarantine and they could only hope that everything comes smoothly, he added.
Meanwhile Dermot Keane, general manager of Sam’s Tours is into inbound tourism selling Palau as the best destination for diving to other markets.
But he said the Philippines as well as Davao are interesting markets where there are available flights linking their island to the other European markets aside from tourists/divers coming from Taiwan, China and Japan.
He said the Silk Air of Singapore and the Asian Spirit are carriers that will connect them to the bigger market.
Asian Spirit sales executive Ella Romero said their Davao Palau route is doing good saying that they have bigger load especially their Palau to Davao flights.
She said they fly thrice weekly Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays leaving Manila at 1:00 pm then leave Davao at 4:00 pm and arrive Palau at 6:45 pm (Palau time).
She said since they open the route in April they maintain over 50 percent load factor up to this time where it is peak season for Palau as it is good time for diving.
The route to Davao from Palau this August is high because of the Kadayawan, she said.
Asian Spirit flies to several domestic routes with Boracay having the highest load factor and two international flights. Other than Palau, Micronesia it also has route to Kaoshiung, Taiwan via Batanes. (PIA XI/pdbanzon) [top]

IPs celebrate arts and cuisine
by Mai Gevera
Davao City (12 August) -- Ten tribes all over the Davao region will showcase their arts and cuisine during the 1st Kasamongan Festival on August 17, in line with the celebration of Kadayawan 2006.
Guests and visitors are welcome to experience and appreciate the cultire of the indigenous people while honoring and making merry with them.
Initiated by the Institute for Indigenous People’s Education (IIPE), the prominent IP groups of Mandaya, Ata Manobo, Matigsalog, Tagakaolo, Manguangan, Bagobo, Mansaka, Isama, and B’laan are given the venue to present to the public how education for the IPs has further strengthened their culture.
“This is also their time to show us how the integration of IP culture to the Department of Education curriculum has contributed positively to the IPs appreciation to their own culture and to education as well," said Norma Mapansa0Gonos executive director of the IIPE.
The IIPE has been advocating for the development of IP education through partnership with different government agencies, non-government agencies, and other civil groups.
Since 2004, it has tapped 20 pilot schools in region 11 with a student population of mainly IP. An IP curriculum which embodies IP core values has been implemented in those schools.
“Along with the integration of the IP culture, we have also mainstreamed the children with the DepEd Revised Basic Education Curriculum (RBEC). This way, they could highly compete with the non-IP students getting the RBEC,” she added.
During the festival, the IPs would dance to age-old beats, intensify people’s imagination with the rhythm and rhyme of IP literature, tantalize the taste buds with IP food with their traibal cooking methods, stimulate sight with their traditional weaving, and arouse emotions with their tribal songs and chants.
Catch them at the IIPE Center, Davao City National High School Compound, Mabini St., Davao City. (PIA XI) [top]

‘Hurawan’ to feature traditional Bagobo rites
Davao City (12 August) -- A traditional tribal ritual, “Hurawan” will highlight the gallantry and importance of horses in the Bagobo tribe of Davao, scheduled on 18 August 2006, 9 AM to 12 NN at the Tulip-Aplaya Road, Ecoland, Matina.
(PIA) [top]

Maxey: Davao's Gabi dismantles foe
By Charles Raymond A. Maxey
DIOSDADO Gabi of Davao City scored a devastating first round technical knockout victory (TKO) over former three-time world champion Mauricio Pastrana of Colombia in their super flyweight battle at the Orleans Hotel and Casino Thursday (Friday in Manila) in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The southpaw Gabi, who hails from Barangay Lasang, dropped Pastrana twice before the referee stopped the fight after just 96 seconds.
The stunning victory somehow erased the stigma of the Filipino fighter's heartbreaking defeat at the hands of International Boxing Federation flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan in March.
Gabi, 27, fought the hard-punching Darchinyan in an attempt to win the IBF crown, but got ambushed in the process when he was knocked out cold in the 8th round from a crushing left shot.
Leaving that loss behind him, Gabi, now called the "Lion Heart", came back with a vengeance as he put up a magnificent showing against Pastrana.
The victory improved Gabi's record at 27-3-1 with 19 KOs. Pastrana dropped to 32-7-2 with 20 KOs.
The Gabi-Pastrana clash was one of the supporting bouts of the Brian Viloria-Omar Niño Romero WBC flyweight championship showdown.

Greetings of Filipino goodness as we celebrate the renowned Kadayawan Festival of Festivals on August 14 to 20 2006! Kadayawan does not only involve the global promotion of investment and tourism in Davao and Mindanao; it aims as well to promote arts and culture and mold creative individuals. The festival manifests our committed effort in nurturing of culture, understanding of history and appreciating art as part of the city’s total development. Ignorance of art, culture and history stultifies growth.
We are therefore again inviting you to be one with us in celebration and witness the interlacing prides and wonders of Davao and the whole of Mindanao through various cultural events.
Our aspirations are appropriately expresses in this year’s festival theme: “Nagkahiusang Katilingban Bisan Asa sa Kalibutan” (One People Anywhere in the World).
Magkahiusa kita! Duyog sa Kadayawan!
Duaw… Duyog…. Visit…. Experience Davao through Kadayawan Festival!!!

Palau tour operators vowed to bring Palauans to Davao
TOUR operators from Palau joined the Mindanao Travel and Tour Exposition held at the Entertainment Plaza of SM City Davao from August 11 to 13.
Davao, which is an hour and 30 minutes plane ride from Palau, is an interesting destination to tour operator Bryan Clark, managing director of Palau Davao Travel Agency.
Clark saw the potential of Davao as the market for the residents of Palau.
"There are a lot of interesting things here that we do not have in our island," he said.
Clark said Palau is an island endowed with rich marine natural resources and good sites for diving. But we do not have the kind of facilities that you have here.
He said his purpose is to bring Palauans to Davao for shopping, saying that the goods here are about two thirds less in cost back home.
"Our residents are awed with the malls here like SM having a wide selections of what they need and also the movie houses because we do not have theaters in Palau," he said.
Clark said these are the things that Palauans are up to and they have arranged packages according to the needs of the travelers.
"We can go high end or the budget packages. We can have four days and three nights package plus other inclusions like day tours and breakfast at $495 in a cheap hotel as an example," he said.
He added that Palauans also look at Davao for medical tourism, in fact some few families from Palau are already here for dental and eye check up as they discovered that the facilities are excellent and the cost is very affordable.
Clark said they also want to have in their markets fresh fruits and vegetables that are abundant here even as he said that they expect to have Durian in the island come Christmas.
There are already talks going on among the authorities on quarantine and they could only hope that everything comes smoothly, he added.
Meanwhile Dermot Keane, general manager of Sam's Tours is into inbound tourism selling Palau as the best destination for diving to other markets.
But he said the Philippines as well as Davao are interesting markets where there are available flights linking their island to the other European markets aside from tourists and divers coming from Taiwan, China and Japan.
He said the Silk Air of Singapore and the Asian Spirit are carriers that will connect them to the bigger market.
Asian Spirit sales executive Ella Romero said their Davao Palau route is doing good saying that they have bigger load especially their Palau to Davao flights.
She said they fly thrice weekly Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays leaving Manila at 1 p.m. then leave Davao at 4 p.m. and arrive Palau at 6:45 p.m. (Palau time).
Keane said since they open the route in April they maintain over 50 percent load factor up to this time where it is peak season for Palau as it is good time for diving.
The route to Davao from Palau this August is high because of the Kadayawan, she said.
Asian Spirit flies to several domestic routes with Boracay having the highest load factor and two international flights. Other than Palau, Micronesia it also has route to Kaoshiung, Taiwan via Batanes. (PIA 11/pdbanzon)

Covington: History lost
By Gary Covington
Looking In
SOMEBODY tell me why there's all this ruckus about the Court of First Instance being knocked down to make room for a museum (and apparently and nonsensically, the new construction to be a clone of the demolished one). "History lovers" up in arms? Davao's history and Yamashita's treasure have one thing in common -- they're both darn difficult to find.
Visitors often ask me, "Where's Davao's history?" Of course they're looking at the place through European eyes and used to falling over history in the form of castles or ancient houses or battlefields at ever step. Asia is different. It still has history -- even pre-colonization history -- but where is it?
I'm no historian, not even an amateur but I do take an interest in wherever I happen to be. A casual interest true but it's nice to know what the Spaniards thought as they splashed ashore (where?) or did they build a strongpoint up on Matina ridge (I don't know. Did they?)?
What was going on during the three or four hundred years of Spanish influence? Was Davao a seaport fitting out galleons to join the annual Manila "flota" or just a hamlet with a governor cursing his luck to be posted to such a dump.
Looking at that World War Two aerial photo of Davao it was still a country town even then but the GIs landed and over the next fifty years something happened -- dare I suggest an impetus lent by the Japanese tenure -- to jolt Davao from a country drop to the city it now is.
Years ago, in the middle of the Boulevard at the bottom of Bonifacio Street, there used to be a concrete plinth bearing a bronze plaque. I stopped and read the inscription once and it recorded the landing place of either the Spaniards or the Yanks (I'm ashamed to admit I've forgotten completely who). It's gone now. The plinth remains -- smashed but dutifully whitewashed by road titivating crews -- but where is the bronze plaque? Stolen? Melted down? Does anyone know it's gone or, more to the point, does anyone care?
Think the Court of First Instance on a smaller scale. It's not the same you cry. Yes it is. The plinth was part of Davao's history. There should be a marker celebrating whomever it was that landed.
Back to buildings. If the Court of First instance was such a big deal why, when it was first learnt that it was to be demolished, wasn't there a hue and cry, some sort of campaign organized to save the building? The wheels of government turn exceedingly slow, the decision to knock down the court wouldn't have been made overnight. Didn't I hear that there is a Davao historical society? Did they jump up and down?
Is there even anybody on the city's payroll whose job it is to 'list' buildings of historical interest (and not necessarily old either) for preservation or can anybody knock down anything at any old time?
There used to be (I say used because it's now been torched and sure to feel the housebreaker's hammer sooner or later) a splendid example of wooden architecture on General Luna Street opposite Gaisano's mall. It's stood empty ever since I've lived in Davao, I'd admire the place every time I walked past. One day the frontage was painted (but not the rear) and I had high hopes. Maybe someone would refurbish the building as yuppie flats with parking behind. No. I'll wager the building gets torn down and another bit of Davao's history is lost.
