Goin' bananas over Banana Beach
Tuesday, April 27, 2010
By Ben O. Tesiorna

IMAGINE a resort within a 760-hectare banana plantation replete with a 60-hectare forest, amenities comparable to resorts in Bali and a service de luxe that is truly Filipino. That is the experience at the newest resort in the Davao Gulf, which is now being developed by the Tuason family in the vast Hijo Estate in Madaum, Tagum City.

Aptly called the Banana Beach, this latest attraction in the middle of a banana plantation in the province of Davao del Norte, the number one producer of bananas in the country, has more to offer than any other resort in the region, if not the country.

Click here for Election 2010 updates

For only P500 day package, visitors can partake of the restaurant's ala carte or set menus and a variety of thirst quenchers and signature desserts. The same goes for Tagum residents and senior citizens who are given a 20 percent discount.

While the day package can be used solely for food and beverages, it is but wise for guests and patrons not to bring in food and drinks.

Aside from its beautiful beach with volcanic sand comparable to Boracay in terms of fineness, only differing in color, Banana Beach also has a forest where wild boars, snakes, monitor lizards and monkeys abound. The developers are also planning to erect canopy bridges that would connect the huge trees to each other so that visitors could safely watch from atop as the wild animals go about unhampered below.

Another way of enjoying the forest is through its Twilight Safari which starts at 5:30 p.m. until 9 p.m.

Guests stay at the edge of the forest and wait for the animals to come out and forage. Children can ride on the back of the pickup truck for a better view of the animals when they appear.

It was learned that kuya Kim Atienza and the Matanglawin staff recently visited Banana Beach and went looking for king cobras or commonly called as "banakon" in the forest. They failed to find one, but nevertheless Atienza's team had a great time at the resort and featured the resort's forest in one of their episodes.

John Irene P. del Campo, executive assistant to Twin Rivers Leisure Group Inc. chairman and president, said that for the adventurous ones they offer a safari inside the forest by way of a touring cab.

Aside from the forest, visitors can also go on an educational tour of the banana plantation and get acquainted with the entire process from harvesting to packing.

Banana Beach has several "casitas" for those who want to stay overnight. It resembles a bahay kubo but is very open like a cabana. One or two mattresses are provided along with a mosquito net for protection.

If you want privacy, there are wooden blinds that can be unrolled. Also, there is a common bathroom and comfort room for men and women. They also have cheaper cottages for those who are on a tight budget.

For those who want a taste of luxury and utmost privacy, the Tuason's resort house called Lanikai is also available. Lanikai is a Hawaiian word which means "heaven by the sea." It is a two-storey house with plantation-style elegance. The owners have renovated it into a guest house with eight air-conditioned rooms.

Daily room rate is P6,000 (for two persons with an additional P700 for every extra bed) with free breakfast. A minimum of three rooms is required for one booking so as to afford guests with exclusivity.

Banana Beach also offers but what else, a banana boat ride. A speedboat is also available for those who want to go waterskiing or island hopping. The resort is also good for skim boarding as it boasts a 4.5 kilometer shoreline.

They also have a water trampoline placed several meters from the shoreline -- a short kayak ride away. It works much like a backyard trampoline except when you fall, you fall into the wonderful waters of the Davao Gulf.

The resort also has "The Spot." "The Spot" has a pavilion that overlooks ponds and mangroves, and the Madaum River, perfect for weddings, debuts and private parties. Fishing rods are available in the huts along the ponds where you can fish and catch your meal.

Banana beach provides various delicacies that are unique. For drinks they have the Banana Daiquiri, a rhum-based banana drink. For desserts they have the Monkey Tail, frozen banana dipped in chocolate and sprinkled with sweet candies and five flavors of banana ice cream.

And lastly, the resort has also its own Banana Dance that would surely make visitors feel more fun and at ease.

Management has ambitious plans for this newly-opened resort and all are geared to the satisfaction of their customers. They will soon be putting up a swimming pool for those who prefer a fresh water plunge.

Rosanna Tuason-Fores said their property has been for years, Davao's best kept secret. Soon enough it will no longer be a secret but a destination

Avila happy about approval of Older Persons Welfare Code

http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/avila-happy-about-approval-older-persons-welfare-code

DAVAO City Councilor Leonardo Avila took pride Wednesday with the City Council's approval on the "Older Persons Welfare Code of Davao City."

Avila said the city has "provided the social spectrum with protection laws."

Click here for Election 2010 updates

Avila, the proponent of the code, said the city is "leading the country as of the moment in the set of laws made for the development of its citizens."

"This has been the result of studies because when we look at the spectrum of identity, the older persons are there but have not been given the kind of laws to protect them. We already have the Children's Welfare Code but the end of that should be the Older Persons Welfare Code. Nasa gitna itong Women's Code and etc.," Avila said during Wednesday's Media Hour forum.

Avila said the city is the only government unit in the country that has adopted the five principles of older persons declared by the United Nations and has applied the same to legislation.

"The five principles of older persons give way to the fulfillment of their existence, their life, and these are: (1) independence; (2) participation; (3) care; (4) self-fulfillment; and (5) dignity. We are the only city na na-adopt na ang mga ito," Avila said.

The said code features the following:

* strengthen the Office of the Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA) through the enhancement of its functions, creations of plantilla positions;

* increases the participation of older persons through their representation in the Barangay Development Council and City Development Council;

* creates the "Older Persons Employability Desk" to assist older persons who wants to be employed and to earn;

* facilities and privileges will be constructed/established for older persons to the use of older persons considering they also have special needs;

* institutionalizes "Elderlympics," "Older Persons Day," and the "Senior Citizens Week" as an annual events conducted for the benefit of Older Persons giving importance to their health and contribution to the society;

* provides for the concept of Older Persons Abuse and for its Penalties.

Other provisions of the Code are the benefits of enforcing an:

* Emphasis that age alone shall not be the sole reason for not hiring an able and willing older person who are seeking opportunity to work in the city;

* Geriatric Health and Rehabilitation Care Section in hospitals, barangay health centers and other facilities;

* Older Persons Assistance Center at terminals and ports;

* Express lanes privileges, special bus stops, and platforms/ramps;

* Older Persons Desk in the Davao City Police Office;

* Senior Citizens Centers that have a library, educational and livelihood tutorials, where senior citizens can spend their time. (JCZ)

Davao hones edge as BPO hub

DAVAO CITY -- The city’s information and communications technology sector will focus on four concerns, namely: building up a sustainable pool of talent, improving infrastructure, enhancing the business environment, and reducing cost to do business in order to maintain its edge as choice location for business process outsourcing (BPO) firms.

"These are crucial in bringing us to the next level," Lizabel G. Holganza, president of the Information and Communications Technology Association of Davao Inc., said in a recent e-mail.

Davao topped other so-called "next wave" cities cited last Apr. 15 by the Business Processing Association of the Philippines, the Commission on Information and Communications Technology and the Department of Trade and Industry as locations best prepared to accommodate BPO firms that are seeking sites other than already-congested centers like Metro Manila and Metro Cebu.

The other "next wave" cities were listed as: Sta. Rosa in Laguna, Bacolod in Negros Occidental, Iloilo City in Iloilo, Metro Cavite (Bacoor, Imus and Dasmariñas cities), Lipa in Batangas, Cagayan de Oro in Misamis Oriental, Malolos in Bulacan, Baguio in Benguet and Dumaguete in Negros Oriental.

The industry, Ms. Holganza said, will have to provide support beyond basic call center services to include higher-value tasks like medical transcription, software development, and animation.

Ms. Holganza also stressed that the power problem now hounding the entire country -- Mindanao worst of all -- needs to be resolved promptly.

"We need to work on finding long-term solutions to our energy challenge as this will pose a barrier to our growth targets," said Ms. Holganza.

The software development sector in the city has been slowly growing, although there have been problems along the way, said Samuel R. Matunog, president of the Davao Software Association.

Mr. Matunog said that although the association already has 30 members, many software developers in the city -- most of them home-based -- are not yet organized.

In terms of human resources, Andre Joseph T. Fournier, industry consultant of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said Davao-based BPOs are now hiring a big number of local applicants.

This situation is different from years ago, when applicants from this city and nearby areas would instead seek such employment in Metro Manila and Metro Cebu.

Ms. Holganza said the recent recognition of the city as best location for BPOs outside Metro Manila and Metro Cebu should correct perceptions that the city was in chaos due to conflict in parts of Mindanao. "Investors need to come here to see for themselves that the city is among the most peaceful areas of the country." -- C. Q. Francisco

Kalinawan’s Rocky Retreat

Situated on the opposite side of Island Garden City of Samal in Barangay Aundanao, embraced by the Davao Gulf and overlooking Mount Diwalwal just across the sea, Kalinawan was named for its perfectly clear, calm waters at dawn.

The amiable couple Mylene and Vip Jacob, who love nature and diving, had a vision for the once rough piece of land with uneven terrain and high cliff which they impulsively bought on a whim, but didn’t know what to do with in the beginning.

The dream turned into reality, as friends from the Edge Outdoors led by mountaineer Rey Sumagaysay, got excited about the rock wall they can develop and offer to outdoor extreme sports enthusiasts. Kalinawan’s 80-foot high and 100-foot wide limestone cliff provides a beautiful backdrop against the aquamarine sea, and at the same time sets a challenge on strength and endurance as you conquer the sheer drop off with your physical stamina.

A paradise uncovered, the simple resort has facilities for a day’s event or retreat. Recently, a wacky wedding was held where the bride crossed the canopy walk, and rushed through the zip line in her bridal wear. A day’s team building was also held by Globe Philippines as they offered an “Amazing Race” type of adventure for their valued clients.

Promoted as an extreme adventure destination by Sports Unlimited (a TV show hosted by Dyan Castillejo and Mark Nelson), Kalinawan is a resort which offers full packed adventure activities from ziplining, kayaking, rapelling, trekking, scuba diving, snorkelling, as well as mountain biking and 4x4 offroad pursuit.

The stunning underwater vista of Aundanao in Samal offers a treasure trove of immeasurable species of fish, turtles and on the surface, a family of dolphins cavorting by on a lucky day. View the tempting cool aquamarine sea from the Gazebo, while the kids (if you’re thinking of bringing) can relax and participate in hand painting on shells, wooden paddles, and empty bottles to bring home as souvenirs.

While I was there at work (I was photographer and at the same time host to the awarding ceremony of the Globe event), I still got my down time resting on a hammock and exploring the islands as if I was on my own. Amidst the squeals and cheers of frenzied activities, I got to quietly chat with the owners over coffee and delicious merienda, and capture a rainbow in the horizon which happens almost every afternoon after a drizzle. The ambience of rhythmic waves crashing into shore was so relaxing it’s a temptation not to stay overnight, pitch a tent in the open and watch fireflies light up the cool evening.

To get to Kalinawan, you can take a 2-hour boat ride from the Sta. Ana Port. The resort can arrange for your boat transfer. If you prefer a road trip, take the Davao-Samal Ferry Boat at Sasa. A 45 minute adventure drive will take you 11 kilometers to Penaplata from Babak, and another 11 kilometers to Aundanao. After a right turn at Aundanao Elementary School and straight, you will pass by the scenic and popular Canibad and Spring Water before arriving at Kalinawan. Another option is for Kalinawan Resort to provide a car for pickup and transfer from Davao International Airport (Php 3,200 for round-trip service).

If you are really made of tough hide and adventurous in spirit, the final option is to go mountain biking or experiencing the habal-haba (local vehicle transport via motorbike) through 22 kilometers of adrenaline rush from Babak to Kalinawan’s winding road with a cliff view of coastal areas in an exhilarating joyride.

Visit the resort’s website at www.kalinawan.com or make arrangements through landline: (082) 298-5298; (082) 286-2844 or mobile 09177007325.

Dutertes maintain wide margin;
Acosta’s lead over Karlo widens

Barely more than two weeks before the elections, the Duterte-Duterte tandem continues to enjoy a wide-margin lead over their rivals in terms of voter preferences, according to latest survey results released by Davao City-based pollsters.

According to the Pulso ng Bayan political survey of Advance Marketing for Media, Inc. (AM/FM, Inc.), Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod mayoralty candidate Sara Z. Duterte enjoyed 66.53% support while his rival, Speaker Prospero C. Nograles only got 23.67% from a total of 1,500 respondents.

AM/FM Inc. is backed by the University of Mindanao Broadcasting Network (UMBN), a pioneering broadcasting company based in Davao City which operates eight FM stations and five AM stations in key cities in Mindanao and Visayas.

In the vice mayoralty post, the AM/FM Inc. survey conducted last April-15-17 and April 19-21 also showed that Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte scored 72.87% while his rival, Benjamin C. De Guzman, got 15.33%.

Widened

In the first congressional district, the lead of Hugpong candidate Councilor Mabel Acosta over Karlo Nograles continues to widen with 46.20%, a six percentage lead from Karlo’s 40.60%.

A comparative presentation of AM/FM survey showed the increasing support that Acosta has been gaining especially since the start of local campaign period last March 26 when she was officially endorsed by Mayor Duterte as Hugpong official candidate.

In its January survey, Acosta only got 26.3% while Karlo scored 42.5%. In March AM/FM survey, Acosta’s score surged to 33.20% while Karlo’s support was nailed at 42.19%.

The latest AM/FM survey this month showed that Karlo has even lost two percent 40.60% while Acosta further gained 30 percent with 46.20%.

The increasing trend in Acosta’s performance reflected in AM/FM survey is consistent with the results of the recent survey results separately conducted by another local pollster commissioned by Hugpong.

Irreversible

The Hugpong-commissioned survey showed Acosta now enjoys 47.41% support while Karlo’s performance slid to 36.32%. Shortly before the local campaign period, the two were virtually in a statistical dead heat at 38.8-40%.

“Karlo’s dive is now irreversible. Like his father, his candidacy is already doomed to fail at this stage of the campaign. No amount of black propaganda can block the victory of Acosta who will certainly share the triumphs of the Dutertes come election day,” said the Hugpong in a statement.

Aside from the increasing improvement in voter preference for Acosta, Hugpong said its latest survey also showed that the support of voters for the Dutertes and other Hugpong candidates are virtually unchanged since it has periodically conducted surveys starting late last year.

Hugpong surveys showed its candidates continue to enjoy commanding lead over their rivals though they slightly change, from time to time, in terms of standing among themselves as in the case of Hugpong candidates for councilors in the second district wherein 16 of them agreed to campaign together.

But in the case of mayoralty candidate, Sara scored 76.69% this April while his rival Nograles only got 20.70%. The trend is statistically the same from previous surveys which showed 18-20% average performance of Nograles and 75-77% average performance of Sara.

“The favorable voter preferences for all the Hugpong candidates are unchanged given the minimal survey-to-survey statistical variations. It is a clear indicator that even before the campaign period, people in Davao City have strongly supported the Duterte-Duterte administration candidates,” the Hugpong statement said.

Overfatigue hits Chenee
Written by: Boga , Jessy
Friday, 30 April 2010

CHENEE Capuyan, the Davaoena who won the grand prize of around P1.2 million in this year’s worldwide singing competition staged by McDonald’s for its employees, returned to Davao City without any funfare.
Only few relatives, friends and some co-workers fetched her at the Davao International Airport Wednesday night.
A motorcade around the city was supposedly set yesterday morning for the 20 year-old McDonald’s Damosa crew who bested around 10,400 other contenders around the world to win in the third season of Voice of McDonald’s (VOM) held in Florida last April 22.
But it was cancelled since overfatigue hit Chenee.
“Chenee is experiencing weakness and loss of energy as a result of physical stress since her return from Orlando, Florida,” Meryl Adiel Timbol, the senior account manager of EON which handles the public relations for McDonald’s, told reporters during yesterday’s supposed press conference at its Bajada branch.
“So gikapoy si Capuyan (So Capuyan was tired),” an editor commented.

Timbol said Chenee needs few days to rest, and she is resting now in one of the city’s posh hotels.
“Actually, hindi pa siya nakakauwi sa kanila,” Timbol said. Chenee is a native of Padada, Davao del Sur, but she is now living with her family in Obrero.
Chenee arrived in the Philippines last Sunday on a “red-eye flight” (an overnight plane travel) and spent two days in Manila without much sleep. McDonald’s Philippines held a welcome home party for the Davaoena singing hero.
The PR executive narrated that Chenee went through a lot of engagements—like meeting Elton John who performed at the McDonald’s 2010 Worldwide Convention – before and even after the VOM competition.
But Timbol said Chenee should now overcome jet lags since she will be travelling in various country as part of her winnings.
This early, the Davaoena singer is set to perform in various McDonald’s branches in Asia, Australia, and Middle East this year.
A concert with McDonald’s Philippine chair George Yang is also scheduled thius June in Manila.

Camella Northpoint holds
topping off ceremony
Mindanao Daily Mirror
May 01, 2010

Camella Northpoint, the landmark condominium development in Davao of masterplan developer Camella Communities, held a topping off ceremony marking the completion of the structural development of Manchester, the condo community’s first building.

The event was witnessed by no less than Maribeth C. Tolentino, president of Vista Land & Lifescapes, Camella’s holding company, and Leni D. Luya, Camella Regional Head, along with the developer’s contractors, suppliers, and members of the sales networks and management of Camella Communities Davao led by GM Marlon Niño B. Esca-licas.

“This topping off is a milestone in the development of Camella North-point. We’re right on track in meeting our schedule and hitting our targets,” declared GM Escalicas.

The topping off also means the start of the interior development of Manchester, slated to welcome its unit owners by the third quarter of the year. Also in the heat of construction stage are the grand clubhouse Wakefield Manor and its many amenities that include a multi-function hall, a fitness gym, gaming area, swimming pool, grill pits, cabanas, and a meditation pond, among others.

Wakefield Manor will bear distinct British architecture and serve as a perfect venue for homeowners to socialize, play, and relax with their families and friends. It is scheduled for completion by the third quarter, in time for the unit owners of Manchester to enjoy its amenities when they move in within the same period.

The topping off ceremony held April 25 started with a Thanksgiving Mass to commemorate the launch of Camella Northpoint last year, and dovetailed with the blessing of the newly renovated Marketing Kiosk.

Camella is set on meeting its commitment to its homeowners as it resolves to keep its position of strength in the real estate industry in the city. It has declared about a billion pesos in investment in Davao in lieu of its upcoming developments in 2010.

Camella Communities is a subsidiary of Vista Land, the largest homebuilder in the country. For inquiries about their current and upcoming developments, call 298-0387 and 298-0300 or visit their offices at G/F Karpentrade Bldg., McArthur Highway, Matina, Davao City.

While members and guests have been constantly enjoying the amenities made available to them, an addition to the beach club will soon be realized - the infinity pool. This will prove to be another dramatic inclusion to the club’s features.

With these offerings, it is not surprising that the Playa Azalea families of lot owners are increasing at record breaking speed. Recently, the new cluster, have just been opened to accommodate the growing “family tree”.

Landco Pacific is pleased to announce that the non-stop road paving will soon extend from the first cluster to the second and the beach side clusters. Shortly after, the hillside cluster’s swimming pool and the guard house will be constructed.

This is just a few of what to expect from Playa Azalea this year.

Davaoeña wins Global Singing
Competition in Orlando, Florida
Mindanao Daily Mirror
May 01, 2010

Filipinos stood proud once again as Davao del Sur’s very own Chenee Capuyan bagged the grand prize in the Voice of McDonald’s Season 3 singing competition held last April 22 in Orlando, Florida.

The Voice of Mc Donald’s is a worldwide contest exclusive to McDonald’s crew and restaurant managers. It has become an international stage to discover, recognize and reward the most talented singers among the 1.6 million McDonald’s restaurant employees all over the world. The Voice of McDonald’s is only one of the ways the company solidifies its commitment to employees by making all McDonald’s restaurants a fun and great place to work in. In 2005, more than 2,500 employees entered the first competition, and in 2007, more than 3,600 singers entered. For this 3rd season, more than 10,400 employees joined the competition.

In the Philippines, McDonald’s employees have always been strong contenders in the competition. Chenee is now the second Filipina from Davao to compete in the Voice of McDonald’s finals after Mary Margaret Yu won first runner up in Season 2 back in 2008. According to President and CEO Kenneth Yang, “We at McDonald’s Philippines have always supported the competition and strongly encourage our employees to join because we see this as a great way to recognize their talents and reward their hard work. The opportunities we provide our employees show just why McDonald’s is a great place to be.”

Yang added, “In behalf of your entire McDonald’s family, congratulations on winning the Voice of McDonald’s Season 3; we are all so proud of you. We hope that you will continue to be an inspiration to other employees and to young people everywhere to never stop dreaming and just keep going.”

PIA Press Release
2010/05/01
RDC XI endorses P19.4-B worth of
projects for Davao Region in 2011

Davao City (1 May) -- A total of P19,437,669 billion worth of project proposals of agency regional offices (AROs), state universities and colleges (SUCs), and special development bodies (SDAs) for implementation in Davao Region in 2011 were reviewed and endorsed by the four (4) sectoral committees of the Regional Development Council (RDC) XI during their respective meetings this month.

This was revealed by Director Maria Lourdes D. Lim, RDC XI Vice-Chairperson and NEDA XI Regional Director. She added, however, that these proposals do not cover the entire national government bureaucracy in the region since some of the AROs have not yet submitted their proposals.

The four (4) RDC XI sectoral committees are the Development Administration Committee (DAC), Economic Development Committee (EDC), Infrastructure Development Committee (IDC), and Social Development Committee (SDC).

Director Lim said that the EDC endorsed P1.03 billion worth of project proposals for the economic sector or 5.31% of the total proposed public investments.

The SDC recommended the approval of P6.1 billion for the social sector or 31.53% of the total public investments for the region. The IDC meanwhile endorsed P11.4 billion for the infrastructure sector or a share of 58.77% of the total proposed investments and the DAC endorsed P924 million for the development administration sector or 4.4% of the total proposed investments.

RDC XI Vice-Chairperson Lim also said that the proposed programs and projects support the region's 5 development outcomes, namely, increased job creation through economic growth, enhanced social development with direct poverty reduction measures, improved physical planning and sustainable management of the environment, improved infrastructure and logistics support, and good governance.

They also contribute to the achievement of Davao Region's Development Agenda of healthy and empowered households, enabling infrastructure, abundant harvests, robust industries, transparent and accountable governance and sustained socio-economic development.

She added that the proposals will likewise help the region achieve its bottomline targets and the Millennium Development Goals. They also address concerns related to gender and development, as well as, disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation.

The proposals will be consolidated to form the proposed Annual Investment Program (AIP) of Davao Region for CY 2011. All these programs will be funded by the National Government. Director Lim thus called on the local government units to complement these with their locally funded proposals to enhance measures to address development issues and concerns. She added that a large majority of the proposals in the AIP will be implemented in all the region's 4 provinces and the city of Davao.

The proposed AIP of Davao Region will be the main agenda of the next meeting of RDC XI on May 4, 2010 where it will be presented for the Council's review and approval. The approved AIP will be the basis of the region's AROs, SUCs and SDAs in the formulation of their respective budget proposals for 2011. (PIA) [top]

Council pushes anti-spitting ordinance
Saturday, May 1, 2010

DAVAO City Council's committee on health advocated last week for a successful implementation of an ordinance prohibiting spitting in public places.

Committee chair Councilor Samuel Bangoy headed the launching of the ordinance dubbed "Anti-Spitting Ordinance of Davao City," directing stakeholders from the health sector and law enforcers on the provisions of such measure.

"No person or persons shall carelessly or intentionally spit saliva, phlegm, mucus, or other substances from the mouth in the city streets, alleys, sidewalks, parks, malls, markets, streets, public carriers, public halls, and buildings, banks, public squares, terminals, shopping and business centers, schools, churches, hospital, and other similar public places within the City of Davao," Bangoy said at Grand Men Seng Hotel.

He said the City Health Office is tasked to implement information dissemination campaigns on the effects of spitting on the health and welfare of the constituents of the city within three months from the effectivity of the ordinance.

Any violation of the Anti-Spitting Ordinance shall be penalized by a fine of P100 for the first offense, Bangoy said.

On the second offense, P200 will be the penalty; P300 for the third offense or a subsidiary imprisonment not exceeding six months in case of insolvency, or both such fine and imprisonment at the discretion of the court, he added.

A practicing doctor himself, Bangoy said a lot of illnesses will not be spread if people are disallowed to spit on public places.

He said tuberculosis is among the diseases with high mortality rate in the country. It is contagious and airborne. "Mycobacterism tuberculosis, the bacteria which causes TB, can survive in a dried state for weeks, possibly up to eight months," Bangoy said.

"Matter of implementation na lang ito. I believe na kung kaya ng ibang bansang mag-implement ng ganitong batas, kaya rin natin. This is a first for the country and it would be better kung matupad first rin rito," he added. (JCZ)

Coffee, pizza at Museo Cafe
Sunday, May 2, 2010
By Charles Raymond A. Maxey

"THANK you. Come and see us again," read a sign at the door of Museo Cafe, a coffee shop and dining place located on Araullo street in Davao City.

Clients going out of the establishment after a coffee or lunch break will not miss the sign, but it's not the only encouragement that kept them in going back to the place but the food and quality service Museo Cafe is giving them.

In Museo Cafe, customers not only sip good coffee and munch delicious pizza; they also experience an amiable atmosphere where friends meet friends.

"Here, a customer is a friend to other customers. Nobody feels alone," said Gina Banzali, who handles the sales department.

Banzali said they make it sure that customers are being attended to from time to time, even to the point of going around herself checking to entertain them.

Jet Guiang, the manager, said one of the features of the establishment that is not found in other coffee shops is the personalized cups for customers.

These cups are being offered to customers who really patronize Museo Cafe.

"When we notice that this customer has been frequenting the place already we will surprise him or her one day by offering the personalized cup," Guiang said.

Of course, Museo Cafe is best known for its coffee and variety of foods, including the ever delectable Mexican pizza.

Their house specialty, Guiang said, is the Etheliana's pizza, which was named after the firm's owner Ethel Tunguia.

"They have to try our Etheliana's pizza," lured Guiang.

Museo Cafe also has sin-full white mocha as one of its top choices for customers. This is being served either hot or cold. They also have durian capuccino and durian brew.

At the place, located in the corner of Tionko Avenue and Araullo St., one can have coffee, lunch or dinner at very affordable prices. The establishment also has a function room that can accommodate up to 25 persons.

According to Banzali, they also accept bookings for exclusive use of the place and can work on any budget their clients present. On top of this, the place is wi-fi zone so clients can have free access to the internet for free.

Recently, Museo Cafe launched its merienda buffet every pay day, meaning every 15th and 30th of the month. For P150, a customer can have a variety of food for snacks, including pizza, binignit and toron.

Banzali said the place is frequented by students, medical representatives, lawyers and prominent people, including politicians.

"They really hang out for we have a friendly atmosphere," Banzali said, adding that they cater mostly to A and B customers.

The 30-year-old Guiang said clients really looked forward in going back after dining at the place since they started operating in February of 2009.

The notice at the door may not even be needed

Twin events held at ‘The Spot’
Written by: Roque , Marilyn
Saturday, 01 May 2010

AT SUNDOWN, just when the summer heat gave way to the cool afternoon breeze, candles were lit for the blessing of “The Spot”, the newest eco-tourism destination in Tagum City, Davao del Norte. Nestled among tall trees and a wide fish pond, Hijo Resources Corporation envisioned a resort totally different from the usual beach front. Lush vegetation which boasts of a virgin forest where wild boars enjoy their freedom in a protected part of the property are features that make it all different.
The restaurant was blessed by Monsignor Wilfredo Manlapaz with the Tuason family headed by Phihlippine Ambassador to the Vatican Ms. Mercy Tuason. Invited guests from Davao del Norte included Governor Rodolfo del Rosario and wife Inday and son Anthony. Brig. General Carlos Holganza arrived for the occasion. First Lady of Tagum City Alma Uy did not miss the occasion as it was also the unveiling of the Green Army Logo.

Launching of the Green Army was another highlight of the evening to present a clear picture of the company’s corporate social responsibility, especially on issues involving the environment. A tree planting, the first to be done in the evening took place after dinner. Trees were planted by Her Excellency Ambassador Mercy Tuason and Gov. Rodolfo del Rosario assisted by Ms. Rosanna T. Fores, Vice Chair and CEO of HRC, Vicente O. Reyes and Mrs. Magdalena Tuason-Reyes, Chairperson of Hijo Resources Corporation assisted by Karen Solitaria; Angeles Quimson and Bishoop Wilfredo Manlapaz assisted by Allan Templa; Councilor Francisco Remitar of Tagum City and Brgy. Chair Ruthman Ladia of Madaum, Tagum City assisted by Obet Solitaria; Judith Onlos, represented by Flordeliza Cabantao of Jose Tuason Memorial High School assisted by Ding Pineda. Semil Tuason was overall head of the event.

McDo Damosa crew is VOM's world champ

Sunday, May 2, 2010

By Gigie A. Agtay

THERE's indeed a reason for McDonald's Philippines to celebrate because a 19-year-old Dabawenya emerged champion in the grand finals of Voice of McDonald's Season 3 held in Orlando, Florida USA on April 22.

Chenee Capuyan, the youngest among 12 finalists, is now the second Filipina from Davao to compete in the Voice of McDonald's finals after Yu of McDonald's Ilustre won first runner up in Season 2 back in 2008.

Click here for Election 2010 updates

She wowed celebrity judges and an audience of more than 14,000 with a powerful performance of Destiny's Child's "Stand Up for Love".

A panel of internationally-renowned music industry professionals judged the final competition: Estelle, Grammy Award-winning R&B singer; Troy Carter, chairman/CEO of Atom Factory, Inc., whose clients include Lady Gaga; Walter Afanasieff, Grammy Award-winning music producer whose credits include recordings by Mariah Carey and Celine Dion; and prominent entertainment attorney Ken Hertz.

Voice of McDonald's, a global singing competition aimed to discover new talents and foster friendly competition, is held every two years and is open to all crew and restaurant managers. It started in 2003, and the Philippines almost bagged the world championship title when Season 2's Mary Margaret Yu, placed 2nd in the World VOM championship held in Florida.

Capuyan, a restaurant employee of McDonalds's Damosa, arrived in Davao City on Wednesday night.

McDonald's organizers had to postpone a scheduled motorcade and a press conference because Chenee was not feeling well due to over fatigue.

Aside from the $25,000 grand prize, a demo recording, Capuyan was given an all-expense paid trip to Los Angeles with two VIP tickets to the Lady Gaga "Monster Ball Tour" concert in August 2010, courtesy of Troy Carter and the Atom Factory.

Walter Afanasieff surprised Capuyan with an invitation to record a demo in his Los Angeles studio. She also met Elton John, who is exclusively performed Monday night at McDonald's 2010 Worldwide Convention. Capuyan also won a new MacBook courtesy of Coca-Cola Company.

Chenee, a BS Information and Technology student of the San Pedro College, said: "When I was singing on stage, I knew that I was there not only for myself but also for my country. I did my very best to show how talented Filipinos are, especially when it comes to singing."

From joining singing competitions during her childhood days to performing with "Daybreak" band after work hours, winning an international singing competition is the fulfillment of her dreams to be a professional singer.

Meanwhile, Jin Hur from Goyang City, South Korea, took second place and received $25,000, and Jesus Molinares from Lima, Peru, placed third to win $15,000.

Each of the 12 finalists were given an iPod touch from the Coca-Cola Company, karaoke kit from The Karaoke Channel, Beats from Dr. Dre headphones from Universal Music Group and Voice of McDonald's attire.

They also received $500 for a celebration party with co-workers at their restaurants and a $1,000 donation in their names to their local Ronald McDonald House Charities or other children's charity.

Voice of McDonald's is a worldwide contest to discover, recognize and reward the most talented singers among McDonald's 1.6 million restaurant employees. In 2005, more than 2,500 employees entered the inaugural competition, and in 2007, more than 3,600 singers joined.

In Season 3, more than 10,400 employees joined before the field was narrowed down to just 12 finalists.

President and CEO Kenneth Yang was quoted as saying: "At McDonald's Philippines have always supported the competition and strongly encourage our employees to join because we see this as a great way to recognize their talents and reward their hard work. The opportunities we provide our employees show just why McDonald's is a great place to work in."

Three US-based firms eye city
Written by: Fusilero , Kristianne
Tuesday, 04 May 2010

THREE US-based information and technology (IT) firms are looking to put up a business process outsourcing and hardware and software development facilities in the city.
“But I do not still want to drop the names of the I.T. firms for now since the deals with them are still on the working progress,” Bert Barriga Jr., president of Information and Communication Technology-Davao, said in a press forum yesterday.
One of the firms already commissioned an international study team to know the viability of the local business environment as well as the peace and order situation in the city. He said the remaining two firms only laid out their plans with the Davao group.

The international study team had a favorable report of the city, seeing it as a safe haven for investors with a good number of manpower pool. He said the city’s 42 universities produce about 15,000 potential BPO workers annually.
The two remaining firms meanwhile need at least 800 contact center agents. One of the firms planned to build a 300-square meter business process outsourcing facility in the downtown area while the other firm is now almost on the stream of closing a deal with a developer in the northert part of the city.
That company is planning to install a facility in a property with a floor area of at least 3,000 square meters, Barriga said.

ICT Davao signs pact with Indian IT chamber

DAVAO City's information communication technology (ICT) organization announced Monday that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with an international trade body based in India.

The MOU was among the results of the 1st Indo Asean IT business summit held on March 8 at Ahmedabad, India, wherein ICT Davao was among the Asean delegates from Australia, Myanmar, Philippines, Vietnam, and Malaysia, along with Vichael Roaring, Commercial Attache, Embassy of The Republic of The Philippines at New Delhi.
....
The pact, through the MOU between the two bodies, vowed to establish relationships "for exchange of information, interaction with delegations to promote business missions, assistance in trade fairs, buyers/seller meets, to organize/participate in seminars and workshops, and to promote advisory services on industry status and prospects."
....
Barriga also said Monday that two big BPO firms, whom he refused to name, will set up branches in the city after the elections.

"It's here; they're looming over the city. It's going to be a pool they're needing. One of which would hire in 500 agents," Barriga said.

Phoenix warehouse secures fiscal incentives

Phoenix Petroleum Philippines Inc. said its petroleum storage terminal in Batangas has received tax perks from the Board of Investments (BOI).

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, Phoenix Petroleum said its 50.4 million liter storage terminal inside the Phoenix Petroterminals and Industrial Park located in Calaca, Batangas was registered by the BOI in line with the incentives under the Oil Industry Deregulation Law.
.....

In addition to the new Calaca registration, the Phoenix Petroleum filed an application with the BOI for the registration of its additional investment comprising two new storage tanks with a total capacity of 7.4 million liters. The new tanks are located inside the Phoenix Bulk Depot in Davao City.

Registered with the BOI in 2006, the Davao depot’s original 6.3 million liter capacity already enjoys the same incentives available under the Oil Industry Deregulation Law. The BOI likewise approved the application for the additional investment in Davao.
.....
Phoenix Petroleum operates both owned and leased storage facilities with a total capacity in excess of 75 million liters. It plans to increase this by at least 50 percent in the next 12 to 18 months.

what they say is important din for the promotion of davao...this negative impression is overshadowing the other good things about Davao

I don't think that it overshadows the good things about davao. A lot of investments are coming in the City (Abreeza and Robinsons to name a few). Local investments have also been on the rise (Current NCCC expansion program, Rise in number of private pre-schools which indicates the rise of middle class society). Our peace and order is the best in the country with having the best police office in the country. Tourism is rising as we can see the construction of a mid-tier hotel in the city (Pinnacle) along with the 2nd branch of Casa Leticia and other small apartelles and inns. Davao City was also identified as the next top city for BPO firms - Davao is next big thing for BPO firms (http://business.inquirer.net/money/topstories/view/20100415-264473/Davao-is-next-big-thing-for-BPO-firms). In the political side, all of the presidentiables are endorsing Rodrigo Duterte, which as far as I know is unprecedented in the country. Kadawayan is almost up in the level of Sinulog. We have 911. These are just some of the things that are not overshadowed.

On DDS - Alam naman natin bakit naging issue ito dahil lang naman kay rodah eh. Politics played a role here cause he was gearing up for the upcoming elections. He used the CHR to investigate the matter which also created quite sensationalism in the national media. :)

I am not a fan of DDS but our justice system is just lame and inutile. Look at what we just saw with justice secretary Agra-biyado.

I agree na despite of the DDS meron pa din investments...although we can't deny na meron talagang stigma brought by the DDS...kita naman natin sa pic...instead of focusing on what is supposed to be a landmark legislation, that should be applauded, naging DDS ang issue...that's reputation.

we can't blame "rodah", dahil hindi sya ang DDS...ang mga biktima, maghahanap talaga ng tutulong sa kanila to seek justice, if they can't go to Duterte, we expect them to go sa rival ni Duterte.

ICT Davao signs pact with Indian IT chamber
Thursday, May 6, 2010

DAVAO City's information communication technology (ICT) organization announced Monday that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with an international trade body based in India.

and the chamber of commerce of Gujarat IT-ITES based in India.

ICT Davao Vice President Samuel Matunog signed the MOU with Gujarat Electronics & Software Industries Association (Gesia) President Nirav Shah on April 16. Gesia has over 200 member companies worldwide.

The pact, through the MOU between the two bodies, vowed to establish relationships "for exchange of information, interaction with delegations to promote business missions, assistance in trade fairs, buyers/seller meets, to organize/participate in seminars and workshops, and to promote advisory services on industry status and prospects."

During Kapihan sa SM press forum, ICT Davao President Bert Barriga said the MOU signified the city as a rising area for business process outsourcing (BPO).

"More fruitful business opportunities between Gujarat and the Philippines can be sought with this first MOU," Barriga said.

Roaring, during the MOU signing, said the agreement was the fruit of "the many hours spent discussing various bilateral issues and trade opportunities with the government and the Gesia authorities."

Barriga also said Monday that two big BPO firms, whom he refused to name, will set up branches in the city after the elections.

"It's here; they're looming over the city. It's going to be a pool they're needing. One of which would hire in 500 agents," Barriga said.

The ICT executive also disclosed that many BPO firms have expressed interest in the city but have been "most concerned about the peace and order situation in Mindanao."

"We just remind them that Mindanao is not Davao and Davao is not Mindanao. We explain to them with facts that we are actually more peaceful here than cities in Luzon and in Visayas. The country also has lesser accounts of violence compared to other countries in the Wastern Pacific region," Barriga said. (JCZ)

Two major events set to promote bird conservation
Written by: Robin , Alisa
Thursday, 06 May 2010

TWO major events are scheduled in the city this year to promote environmental awareness.
The first is Philippine Eagle Week on June 4-13 with the theme “Sa Agila May Pag-asa Laban sa Pagbabago ng Klima” under Presidential Proclamation No. 79.
“We plan to emphasize that Philippine Eagle conservation is a solution to the pressing issue of climate change,” said Tatit Quiblat, communications officer of the foundation.
“By protecting eagle habitats of at least 7,000 hectares each, we are protecting and rehabilitating forests,” Quiblat explained at a press conference yesterday at the Marco Polo Hotel.
However, Quiblat was disappointed to say that the Philippine Eagle Week was only celebrated in Davao City.
“The Philippine eagle is a national symbol. Sana lahat nagcecelebrate nito.”
[B]But Quiblat took comfort in the fact that at least Davao City had a “sense of responsibility to promote the Philippine Eagle.”
Meanwhile, scheduled on a later date is a bigger event endorsed by the Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Tourism.

The First Asian Bird Fair, in line with the 6th Philippine Bird Festival, is set to showcase the different bird festivals of different countries in Asia.
Quiblat was proud to say that Davao City is the prime host of the first ever Asian Bird Fair to be held on September 24-26.
“There is actually a wealth of bird species in Davao,” said Quiblat. “There is a lot of potential here,” she added.
Though still starting, the event aims to promote eco-tourism “through birdwatching and promotion of natural and cultural heritage of host cities.” Quiblat added that 200 international delegates from Asia and Europe are joining this major event.
The First Asian Bird Fair also aims to position the Philippines as a birdwatching destination in the globe.
Among the organizers of this event are the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines, the Bird Conservation Society of Thailand, the Chinese Wild Bird Federation, the Wild Bird Society of Taipei, the Malaysian Nature Society and the Nature Society of Singapore.

we can't blame "rodah", dahil hindi sya ang DDS...ang mga biktima, maghahanap talaga ng tutulong sa kanila to seek justice, if they can't go to Duterte, we expect them to go sa rival ni Duterte.

Dili sila dapat kay rodah muadto, sa DOJ dapat. That is the proper and legal avenue.

Regional Comelec chief: No contingency plan for automation failure

http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/breakingnews/regions/view/20100506-268415/Regional-Comelec-chief-No-contingency-plan-for-automation-failure

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines—The Commission on Elections has no alternative plan if if automation fails, the chief of the poll body’s office in Western Mindanao admitted on Thursday.

“I am sorry to say this but the Comelec has no contingency measures if automation failed,” Helen Aguila-Flores said during a special meeting of civilian, police and military officials at the headquarters of the Western Mindanao Command.

The meeting was called for the purpose of discussing a contingency plan in the light of possible power outages on election day.

Flores also admitted that technical problems relating to the operation of the precinct count optical scanners or PCOS machines and the configuration of the compact flash memory cards caused “mental luggage for everyone and affected the over-all preparation of the tapped stakeholders for the May 10, 2010 local and national elections.”

“That Comelec has no contingency plan in case automation fails is a reality that I want everyone to wake up to, and as of today… I am sorry to tell you, my office cannot answer that. Hopefully we cross the bridge when we get there,” she said.

The good news, she said, is that she got a text message from Commissioner Gregorio Larrazabal indicating that the CF cards intended for the region, which had earlier been recalled, have already been reconfigured.

She said the CF cards could arrive on Saturday.

“It’s a very tight schedule. It doesn’t leave room for any further adjustment especially in far-flung barangays,” Flores said.

Because of this, she said the Comelec needs extra help so that the CF cards reach their destination before the elections.

Western Mindanao Command chief Lt. Gen. Ben Dolorfino said the military could help the Comelec by providing transport services.

However, the Comelec has prohibited the use of military vehicles in transporting the PCOS machines and CF cards.

But Dolorfino said the rules could be bent in extreme cases such as the need to deliver the CF cards on time.

“We are running out of time because May 8 is very close to May 10. This is the situation we can consider extreme and the prohibition can be suspended,” he said.

hinay jud ang justice system w/c you acknowledged in your other posts diay...so I really can't blame, for example, a mother na namatayan ug 3 ka anak na mangayo ug tabang sa uban taong nasa puder. lisud pud coz presumably they are thinking na ilang kalaban ang most powerful person in the city...so asa man sila mulugar?

anyways, lisud jud idefend ang davao sa mga uban thread when this issue is brought up. as I said, the stigma is already there - we can't deny that...we need to repair the image of davao, so that instead na good governance w/ DDS ang mag-stick sa minds of non-davao residents, good governance na lang. period.

Anyway, i really cant believe na Alveo ang magtatayo ng condo sa Davao. Not to underestimate the market in our city, but Alveo has prices ranging from 5M and up. If it's Avida, I could say that it's a project that offers value to the Dabawenyos money. Avida, although affordable (1.9M to 4M), it is good kc Ayala Land pa rin. They target more of the end users while Alveo are more into luxurious residential highrise projects. But if it's alveo, then happy gihapon ko. :D

DMCI-Marubeni bags $1.1-billion MRT-7 project (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=572342&publicationSubCategoryId=66)
By Mary Ann Ll. Reyes (The Philippine Star) Updated May 05, 2010 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - DM Consunji Inc. (DMCI), a wholly-owned subsidiary of DMCI Holdings Inc. and Japan’s Marubeni Corp., have signed a contract for the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of the Metro Rail Transit System of the MRT-7 project with Universal LRT Corp. (BVI) Ltd. for $1.1 billion.

The Marubeni-DMCI consortium will execute and warrant the works for the 22-kilometer rail system which starts from San Jose del Monte, Bulacan and ends at the integrated MRT Line 3- MRT Line 7 station at North Avenue, EDSA in Quezon City, with combined elevated and at-grade guideway sections for a period of 42 months.

Company officials said this infrastructure project will further address the transportation needs of the riding public and alleviate traffic in Metro Manila, particularly traffic going to and coming from Northern Luzon.

It was earlier reported that diversifying conglomerate San Miguel Corp. (SMC) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the controlling owner of MRT-7 for the acquisition of a majority stake in the railway project.

SMC president Ramon Ang earlier told The STAR that an MOU has already been entered into with businessman Salvador “Buddy” Zamora III, who owns 63 percent of Universal LRT Corp. (ULC), which, in turn, wholly owns the MRT-7 project, whereby Zamora will sell his majority interest in ULC to SMC.

Zamora acquired majority control of the ULC consortium in 2008 from its original proponent, Israeli businessman Eli Levin.

Ang also revealed that they are also exploring possible investment in a light rail transit project in Cebu, as well as other projects in Cagayan de Oro, Davao and Iloilo.

The STAR earlier reported that SMC is interested in building a bullet train railway that will run the Laoag-Manila-Bicol route.  Ang said they have commissioned a group that includes international companies with experience in bullet trains to study the possibility of building a bullet train railway that will run from the north to the south end of Luzon.

Meanwhile, when asked how much the 63 percent stake in ULC would cost and when the actual sale will be made, Ang said SMC is still undertaking due diligence work.

MRT 7 is a build-“gradual transfer”-operate, maintain and manage project for the development, financing, operation and maintenance of a 22-kilometer light rail transit route that extends from the MRT Line 3’s North Edsa terminal to San Jose del Monte, Bulacan.

ULC earlier said that it has tapped Morgan Stanley as its financial advisor to raise equity and debt needed to finance the construction of the project.

ULC vice-chairman Roberto de Ocampo said that while it is true that Morgan Stanley has approached SMC to be part of the project, there are other interested parties who are also in talks with the financial advisor.

In response, a source from SMC said Zamora may just have failed to inform De Ocampo that an agreement has already been reached between SMC and Zamora.

Earlier, SMC said it has been offered a majority interest in MRT 7 and that the company is negotiating with the members of the consortium of the project. There were reports that SMC was already in the “advanced stages of negotiation” to take control of ULC,  the consortium tasked to build the MRT 7 project.

Aside from Zamora, other stakeholders in ULC include the SM Group of Companies, which plans to put up a mall in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan that will have an access to the MRT 7 line.

SMC has been expanding from its core food and beverage business and into heavy industry such as power, infrastructure and telecommunications to fuel faster future growth.

The MRT 7 project involves the construction of a 22-km light rail transit system carrying at least half a million passengers a day.

The project also includes an intermodal transport terminal—a transportation hub for buses and other forms of public conveyances—in San Jose del Monte, as well as a 22-km, six-lane feeder highway from the northern end of the line to Bocaue, Bulacan. This highway will link the intermodal terminal to the North Luzon Expressway.

As envisioned by the proponents, the rail component of MRT 7 project will initially operate 108 rail cars in a three-car train configuration. Initial capacity is projected at 448,000 passengers a day, but will eventually be expanded to accommodate as many as 850,000 passengers daily.

The rail line will have 14 stations, namely: North EDSA, Quezon Memorial Circle, University Avenue, Tandang Sora, Don Antonio, Batasan, Manggahan, Doña Carmen, Regalado, Mindanao Avenue, Quirino, Sacred Heart, Tala and Araneta San Jose Del Monte.

The intermodal terminal, on the other hand, will be able to accommodate 60 buses and will also feature passenger facilities and amenities.

The entire project is expected to be fully completed in 42 months, although parts of it may be made operational in phases.

Once completed, ULC will operate and maintain the rail service, the intermodal terminal and the highway for a period of 25 years. The government will get a 30-percent share of net passenger revenues and a 20-percent share of other earnings.

The rail and road network is expected to cost as much as $1.3 billion, while the commercial and residential developments that are expected to rise along the route would cost another $2 billion.

That forum is where fantasies are insisted to be realities, and realities put aside to give way to fantasies.

It is where mere tarpaulins showing scrappy drawings of tall structures make a city premier, as if the drawings make up reality itself.

There is no point dwelling there, really. It's a waste of time. :)

^^ I agree... but sometimes there words can really be harsh it penetrates to your very core.
