Covington: History lost
By Gary Covington
Looking In
SOMEBODY tell me why there's all this ruckus about the Court of First Instance being knocked down to make room for a museum (and apparently and nonsensically, the new construction to be a clone of the demolished one). "History lovers" up in arms? Davao's history and Yamashita's treasure have one thing in common -- they're both darn difficult to find.
Visitors often ask me, "Where's Davao's history?" Of course they're looking at the place through European eyes and used to falling over history in the form of castles or ancient houses or battlefields at ever step. Asia is different. It still has history -- even pre-colonization history -- but where is it?
I'm no historian, not even an amateur but I do take an interest in wherever I happen to be. A casual interest true but it's nice to know what the Spaniards thought as they splashed ashore (where?) or did they build a strongpoint up on Matina ridge (I don't know. Did they?)?
What was going on during the three or four hundred years of Spanish influence? Was Davao a seaport fitting out galleons to join the annual Manila "flota" or just a hamlet with a governor cursing his luck to be posted to such a dump.
Looking at that World War Two aerial photo of Davao it was still a country town even then but the GIs landed and over the next fifty years something happened -- dare I suggest an impetus lent by the Japanese tenure -- to jolt Davao from a country drop to the city it now is. Years ago, in the middle of the Boulevard at the bottom of Bonifacio Street, there used to be a concrete plinth bearing a bronze plaque. I stopped and read the inscription once and it recorded the landing place of either the Spaniards or the Yanks (I'm ashamed to admit I've forgotten completely who). It's gone now. The plinth remains -- smashed but dutifully whitewashed by road titivating crews -- but where is the bronze plaque? Stolen? Melted down? Does anyone know it's gone or, more to the point, does anyone care?
Think the Court of First Instance on a smaller scale. It's not the same you cry. Yes it is. The plinth was part of Davao's history. There should be a marker celebrating whomever it was that landed.
Back to buildings. If the Court of First instance was such a big deal why, when it was first learnt that it was to be demolished, wasn't there a hue and cry, some sort of campaign organized to save the building? The wheels of government turn exceedingly slow, the decision to knock down the court wouldn't have been made overnight. Didn't I hear that there is a Davao historical society? Did they jump up and down?
Is there even anybody on the city's payroll whose job it is to 'list' buildings of historical interest (and not necessarily old either) for preservation or can anybody knock down anything at any old time?
There used to be (I say used because it's now been torched and sure to feel the housebreaker's hammer sooner or later) a splendid example of wooden architecture on General Luna Street opposite Gaisano's mall. It's stood empty ever since I've lived in Davao, I'd admire the place every time I walked past. One day the frontage was painted (but not the rear) and I had high hopes. Maybe someone would refurbish the building as yuppie flats with parking behind. No. I'll wager the building gets torn down and another bit of Davao's history is lost.
Nice article davaoeagle , maybe davawnyos must realize how important history is ! Up in arms to save the Mental Hospital Buliding :grouphug:

Glimpses of old Davao
By Stella A. Estremera
THROUGH the years, hit topics by any columnists would be something that touched on Davao City, pre-mall era.
Those days in the arcades and the pre-school opening shopping for shoes in Milanes in the Aldevinco Shopping Center for the reliable, and child-proof Gregg shoes (shoes so durable, you'd be wearing it until you graduate in elementary), while hoping mom is rich enough for an ice cream sundae, banana split or peach melba and cheese roll from Goody-goody Kiosk just across the corridor, or in Shoeland or Good Earth Emporium both along San Pedro Street for the cheaper but definitely less durable black Spartan shoes that will last for less than one school year.
And then it's a quick trip to Alan's Commercial or Mindanao Education for school items like that atrocious dark brown Golden Gate or drab green Silver Swan notebooks, Mongol pencils, and wax paper (if mom is on a tight budget) or plastic cover (if mom is feeling generous) to cover the notebooks with.
Shopping takes on an upturn just before Christmas, when Christmas parties in school require you to wear something new. This type of shopping will bring you to Borgaily's still along San Pedro Street for a Collezione or Lacoste and a Matchbox toy or A&M along Bolton Street, way before it became that three-storey structure along Rizal Street for really good imported items and more Matchbox toys.
Those were the days when the most envied classmate is the one who has a "Dymo", that thingamajig that you can spell out names with on a hard plastic tape that you use to label your bags, notebooks, and pencil cases; and a set of Nancy Drew or Hardy Boys books. The status symbols of our childhood...
But, way, way before these are even more poignant memories of Davao put to print by two Davao historians and favorite story-tellers, Ernie Corsino who wrote "Davao History" in 1998 and Rogelio "Noning" Lizada who wrote the "Sang-awun sa Dabaw (Once Upon a Time in Davao) in 2002, and the important details that sometimes are glossed over by story-telling are preserved by Gloria P. Dabbay, who wrote "Davao City: Its History and Progress".
In their books we get to know the quaint Davao complete with dates and periods when these glimpses happened, unlike our vague mixed up memories of childhood.
As quoted in Corsino's book, C.D. Cowles in the "Report of the Commanding Officer, Davao" contained in "Report of the War Department", Vol. 9, 538-553, in 1902 wrote, "The twon is well laid-out, with long avenues bordered with palms. There is a good-size church, attached to which is a convento in good repair, capable of containing 125 men. The local barracks is in bad condition (no floor and needs a new roof), nad has space for about 40 men. The two school buildings are dilapidated. The tribunal is commodious; could contain 75 men if flooring were mended, new roofs made, and after a thorough polishing. There is also a government house which could contain 40 men if the building should be thoroughly renovated.
"Some of the private houses are neat and well-built. The health of the community is said to be good. The water is obtained from the Davao River. The staple in the vicinity is hemp; there is sufficient cattle in the immediate vicinity to supply a small garrison, but not enough for export (price about 4 cents per pound on the hoof). The townspeople appear to desire the advent of American troops. They desire to know if there would be a monthly steamer and if it would be possible to obtain a Jesuit priest and named their former pastor, Padre Mateo Gisbert, as the one more desirable."
That was Davao soon after the Americans took over from the Spaniards. It has been a story of growth and development since then, long years filled with memories and snippets that only bring smiles upon those who remember.
Not known to many, Dabawenyos, Davao is the first Charter City under the Commonwealth Regime.
Davao City was once part of this vast chunk of land known as the Davao Province -- now composed of the provinces of Davao del Sur, Norte, Oriental and Compostela Valley.
It was on March 16, 1936 when then Assemblyman Romulado C. Quimpo sponsored a bill in Congress making Davao a chartered city.
The bill was signed into law by then President Manuel L. Quezon on October 16, 1936 under Commonwealth Act No. 51 or the Charter of the City of Davao.
The city was formally inaugurated on March 1, 1937, almost one year after the bill was sponsored.
"The motive of the creation of the City of Davao was the presence in Davao and Guianga of many Japanese nationas. It was then feared that through elections, the Japanese would be in a portion to control Davao and Guianga," Corsino quoted from Jose Ralston Hayden's "The Philippines: A study in national development" (New York: Macmillian & Co., 1955).
Just after the Americans arrived in Davao in 1899, and way before the city was chartered, there was no formal school to speka of as mission school of the Spanish era have been abandoned.
"A common picture of that period depicts a khaki-clad soldier and a young boy sitting on the grass and poring over an illustrated magazine or pamphlet," Corsino wrote.
The soldier would be pointing at a picture and pronounce the name of the object there.
"This was how education began, with off-duty soldiers having friendly session with their pupils. After a while, American soldiers started teaching adults, too," Corsino continued.
But like all centers of development, schools soon flourished, first being government-funded schools.
The first private school hereabouts was the predecessor of the University of Immaculate Conception run by the Religious of the Virgin Mary called Colegio de San Pedro. Its medium of instruction then was Spanish.
It was renamed St. Peter's School for Girls and then two decades later was again renamed Immaculate Conception Institute.
In 1924, the Chinese community put up their own school for the children -- the Davao Chinese School, which first offered primary education with instructions in both Chinese and English.
It was a decade hence when the predecessor of Ateneo de Davao University came into being -- the St. Peter's School for Boys in 1934. This school was conducted by the Jesuit fathers.
The start of the day would be met marked by children on their way to school, Lizada wrote.
"The Davao Light Power Plant blew its siren to announce the start of work. Students of different schools appeared on the streets. Prominent among all were the Japanese students because the boys' head were clean shaven and they wore red caps."
Other distinguishing marks: the Chinese school students were in green skit and white blouses, the Immaculate Conception would be in pink skirts and white blouses, the St. Peter's School for Boys would be in khaki pants and white shirt, while public school students would be in any attire but "occasionally brought garden tools like sickle for gardening."
Noontime in the mid-1930s was very quiet, the street almost deserted.
At around 2 p.m. of a regular day in Davao, Lizada wrote, "In several houses women while away the afternoon playing Pangigue or Landay using Spanish cards with characters like 'Sata de Bastus Spada' or Oros with Alas or ace as the highest card. The men are in the room taking a nap, 'naga pasuka' (a famous Dinabaw term meaning having his scalp scratched or tinkered with slowly till he falls asleep)."
Merienda would be prepared by 3 p.m. and people would then start to leave for the "Paseo" (walk in the park or around town).
Lizada went on to describe how people dress in the 1930s, clothes that distinguished them according to their classes.
"People wearing coats and ties were either professionals or were engaged in white-collared jobs; people wearing 'maong' or denims were laborers, as 'haguteros' or abaca fiber strippers used maong; people wearing rubber shoes belonged to the lower income bracket, as people in the upper income level always put on leather shoes; people sporting two holstered revolvers with bullet belts strapped around their waist were out of town visiting landowners; people wearing buri hats were tenants as landlords wore stetson hats; women wearing kimonas in the markets were Tagalas; women wearing wrapped around patadyongs were most likely Muslims."
Today, the closest we can relate to this description of the people moving around in the city is the one that describes "people sporting two holstered revolvers".
Just a few years ago, this was in the form of vicious-looking people going around in huge pick-up trucks following an equally huge dark-tinted, dark colored SUV.
Since City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte banned those armed men careening all over the city streets in their SUVs, trying so hard to catch up with the dark tinted SUV in front of them, presumably their "amo" from out of town, now only the careening, speeding SUVs and the vicious-looking but unarmed men seated on the rear part of an pick-up truck.
The long-time Dabawenyos can be recognized by the way they talk, or mangled the Tagalog and Visayan dialects, while new arrivals from Manila are distinguished by Manileño twang that a lot of the soft-spoken Dabawenyos find offensive to the ear. The other Visayans, they're barely recognizable until they use words like "pachada" and "nindot", words not used by your Davao Bisaya who will always refer to anything that's beautiful -- whether animate, animate, human or whatever -- as "gwapo". Otherwise, only the guys in the SUVs are distinguishable...

WawaY[625] August 13th, 2006, 07:20 PM Airline to put up Davao-Australia flights
Written by Allen V. Estabillo / MindaNews
Friday, 21 July 2006 00 00 00
GENERAL SANTOS CITY (MindaNews/20 July) -- An emerging international airline based in Australia's Northern Territory (NT) plans to expand its operations in Mindanao later this year in a bid to help facilitate the trade exchanges between the two areas. Quentin Kilian, director for Asian relations of the NT Department of the Chief Minister's Trade and Major Products Division, said that Air Frontier announced it would soon launch passenger and cargo flights between Davao City and Darwin in Australia. “The airline is targeting to launch its maiden flight via Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea before the end of the year,” Kilian told MindaNews. Darwin, considered as Australia's northern gateway, is NT's seat of government as well as trade and industrial center.
Kilian said Air Frontier's expansion to Mindanao was earlier pushed by the NT government as part of its strategic development programs for the resurging Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines-East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA).
He said NT, the sub-region's long-time development partner, is currently connected to the area through Garuda Airline's Darwin-Bali and Darwin-Balikpapan flights and Royal Brunei Airline's Darwin-Brunei flights.
Kilian said among the airline's primary considerations for expanding to Mindanao was the area's cultural connections with Darwin, which is home to more than 6,000 Filipino immigrants who trace their roots to Davao and Cebu.
Considering that the flying time between Davao and Darwin is only about three hours, he said it would be easier and cheaper for Filipinos in northern Australia to visit the country.
Kilian said Air Frontier, which operates regular flights between Darwin and several cities in Australia, is initially planning to establish a base in Davao City.
“We consider this as a long-term venture because both areas offer tremendous opportunities in terms of tourism, trade and investments,” he said.
Kilian said the NT government is eyeing to develop Davao City as an alternative gateway for various products from Mindanao and neighboring areas in the sub-region.
He said they are currently trying to link up NT businessmen with small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the area to facilitate the trade exchanges, mainly of agricultural products, food commodities and construction materials.
In terms of investments, he said NT is also interested in Mindanao's huge potentials in mining and related ventures.
“Mining is one of NT's expertise being largely a mineral base. We're initially planning to conduct a series of mining safety and mine rehabilitation trainings before the end of the year,” he added.
At least 12 Australian companies are presently working on various mining projects in the country, most of which are located in Mindanao.
Two of the biggest mining ventures, each requiring investments of over US$1 billion, are based in Mindanao -- the BHP Billiton/QNI Pujada Nickel Project in Davao Oriental and the Indophil-Sagittarius Mines Inc. (SMI) Copper and Gold Project in nearby Tampakan town in South Cotabato.

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/07 August) --"We mean global business."
From an agriculturally-focused trade exhibit in 1999, this year's Davao Trade Exposition (DATE) will showcase local brands and resources not only to the domestic market, but also to major regional players in the BIMP-East ASEAN Growth Area, Japan and the United States, Domingo Duerme, chair of DATE 2006 organizing committee said Monday. FedEx leads US-based exhibitors that have committed to join the expo on September 15 to 17, he said. The consulates of Malaysia, Indonesia and Japan responded very positively to the invitations, Duerme added.
Lawyer Bienvenido Cariaga, president of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (DCCII) said the expo's theme "Davao goes global" manifests the organizers’ goal to promote Davao not just as an investment destination but as a source of globally recognized products and services.
Local products are highly competitive, Duerme said, and could reap a good following in the global market, especially in the BIMP-EAGA.
Projected sales during the expo, with 25% target increase this year, to around P102.5 million or around $2 million (at P52 to a dollar) from the exhibit this year. Since 2003, when it started to expand the expo from focusing only on agricultural products to industry, commerce, equipment, services, technology, financing, the expo has generated a total of P173.5 million or $3.34 million.
From P36 million in 2003, the earnings rose by 55% in 2004 (P55.5 million), and by 32% in 2005 (P82 million), Duerme said.
Duerme said around 70 of the 140 exhibitors they targeted this year have already signed contracts while 30 others have reserved booths.
DATE 2006, Mindanao's premier trade exhibit, is expected to gather key business players, share market information, explore viable and emerging businesses opportunities, organizers said.
Aside from the exhibit, there will also be trainings, business matching and sales meetings at the city's Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.
This is not the first time DATE organizers pitched for a global outlook. In last year's expo held on October 7 to 9, Cariaga said they aimed to foster business partnerships, create strategic synergies that will together, build global competitiveness. (Walter I. Balane/MindaNews)

Davao was once Little Tokyo
Before the second world war, Davao was "Davao-kou" or Little Tokyo to many Japanese nationals. As much as 25,000 Japanese were living in Davao making it one of the largest concentration of Japanese outside of Japan itself.
The first Japanese to reach Davao in 1903 were workers hired by the new American colonizers (after Spain sold the Philippines to the US for $20 Million in the 1898 Treaty of Paris) for the agricultural plantations in this vast region. Three years ago, appropriate ceremonies marked the centennial of the Japanese arrival here.
During the boom years of the 1920s, the Japanese dominated the abaca (Manila hemp) industry in such districts as Toril, Mintal and Calinan. Remnants of the Japanese communities are still present in these areas such as water and irrigation systems, old buildings, monuments and cemeteries.
After the war, many of the Japanese were sent back home after the confiscation of their properties. They left behind many descendants, however, who are now known and organized as Nikkei Jin Kai.
Japan continued to play a pivotal role in the growth of the city. During the 1950s, the bulk of products of Davao's logging and plywood industries went to the rebuilding of Japan. During the 1960s, it was the turn of copper, gold and other minerals. Beginning in the 1970s, coconut oil and bananas dominated the trading; later on charcoals, carbons and tunas. Lately, Davao is reputed to be the biggest supplier of Japayukis (cultural entertainers).
Many of these issues will be retraced in a conference Strengthening Alternative Exchanges Between the Philippines and Japan to mark the 50 years of the resumption of diplomatic relations between the two nations. There will be a week long celebration in Davao during the last week of August and early September.
The Phil-Japan Frienship Year Conference is being organized by the Mindanao Kokusai Daigaku (Mindanao Japanese International College), probably the biggest Japanese school in the country.
Dean Nieto L. Vitto invited me to speak at the conference on two topics - attracting Japanese investment to Davao, particularly in tourism (eco and medical) and property development for Japanese retirees, and my proposal for establishing direct air links between Davao and Japanese cities.
The Japanese are this city's largest foreign visitors. There is also an increasing number of Japanese retirees and investors flocking to Davao. I would not be surprised that very soon, this city could once more become "Davao-kou."

davaoeagle August 13th, 2006, 07:50 PM 3rd mango marketing conference set in Davao
http://www.mb.com.ph/issues/2006/08/13/PROV2006081371613.html
DAVAO CITY — To further boost Southern Mindanao’s position as one of the country’s major suppliers of good-quality mangoes, the Minfruit Council, in cooperation with the Southern Mindanao Mango Industry Development Council (SMMIDC) and the newly organized Davao Region Mango Contractors (DAREMCA) Association, will jointly host the Third Mango Marketing Conference on Aug. 15-16 at the NCCC Mall’s Conference Hall in this city, with Agriculture Secretary Domingo Panganiban as keynote speaker.
Since the holding of this event for the first time in 2004, SMMIDC has made the marketing conference an annual activity which seeks to bring together growers, buyers and other industry stakeholders to discuss market-related concerns and forge market linkages.
For several years now, Southern Mindanao (Davao Region) has established a solid reputation as a major supplier of high-quality mangoes to both the domestic and foreign markets.
This is primarily due to a number of reasons. First is the abundant supply of mangoes in key areas such as Davao Sur, Davao Oriental and Samal Island which are ideal for mango production.
Second is the year-round availability of good-quality fruits from the region due to favorable micro-climate which makes it feasible for mango harvest all throughout the year.
Third is the presence of large number of growers and key consolidators in the area which spurs expansive mango trading and consolidation activities.
Fourth is the availability of air, sea and land transport links which facilitate the efficient shipment of fresh mangoes to various treatment-facilities which enable exporters to ship fresh mangoes to lucrative markets such as Japan, South Korea and New Zealand. (Gil Abarico)

why are you writing me this? :) i'll e-mail you the answers....for the meantime, consult prieto, jakobson, searle, chomsky, de saussure, pierce et. al. one general rule is...whatever we say and for what ever purpose, we are always a party to the convention set forth by the underlying rules of human communication and we succumb to this whether we like it or not......the rest is purely a matter of ART... or skill we need to learn for us to be able to live in harmony with other people....

monday to friday shift here... hehehe, reading those threads now, thread titles that start with "best, next, most, etc" most likely end up in a squabble. kasi naman yung iba ang hilig hilig talaga mag create ng ganyang mga thread, as if just getting the opinion of others, pero sa likod ng utak nakaready na ang karga kargadang biased opinions nila about the subject matter. pag binagsakan mo ng facts, ayon magagalit na and most often din mag cry ng "foul!". enough of that masisira ang araw natin.

Ady001 August 14th, 2006, 04:39 AM Let's get back to the topic.
Davao needs to harness far-flung areas for industrial development. According to the Mindanao Business Reporter, Calinan is slowly being built-up and developed in its "poblacion" to cater to far-flung areas.
The way I see it, Calinan might be a satellite area for industrialization and tourism. It might have its own airport! :D If that's a good idea.
Will it be a good idea to build an airport near Calinan? If Davao can do with the development and make built-up areas in these far-flung areas, we might develop Calinan to be like Brasilia, linked to other areas by air.
junax August 14th, 2006, 04:39 AM The bad thing about NCCC is that it was placed in a highly polluted area. Look, the building is slowly showing some dirt. Time to clean. And also GMALL.
i agree nccc needs a "car wash" and g-mall too. in fact all davao malls should start getting some shower, but nccc placed in a "highly polluted" area? an overstatement i must say. if that place is highly polluted, ano pa ang itatawag natin sa MM nyan, super duper extreme highly polluted? hehehe
Ady001 August 14th, 2006, 04:41 AM Will Victoria Plaza be really revitalized and made into a new mall? When I went inside, I almost cried at the sight of the malls. Park n'Go signs out of place, other areas in closure. Victoria Plaza like Lim Ket Kai, needs development, and that includes the city gov't in the process.
junax August 14th, 2006, 04:43 AM Sun Cellular, PCSO back '06 Hot August Races
By Jon Develos
Sun Cellular and the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO)
threw its support at co-presentors in this year's Hot August Races on
August 19 and 20 at the Speed City of the Riverfront Business Park.
Both companies joined other national presentors of the two-day legal
drag racing event initiated by the Davao Classic and Sports Car Club
Incorporated and the Philippine Drag Racing Familysport (PDRF).
Others are MCX Motorcycle, Accel and Nescafe. Also supporting the
activity are Castrol GTX Gasoline and Diesel Engine Oils, Tomas
Electrical Supply, SM City Davao, Jose Genesis Tubigon, Manila Bank,
Beejay Yniguez, Parmesa Foods Incorporated, Union Galva Steel
Corporation, Apo Natural Spring Water, Davao Auto Masters, Liveraide,
Pepsi and the Royal Mandaya Hotel. Computer World, Davao Diamond
Industrial Supply, Davao Everflex Electrical, Farmacia Southern,
Kecheca Glass Trading and Tint Shop, KRAMTECH, New Brightstone
Hardware, New Springfield Auto Supply, R. Teen Hardware and Southern
Mindanao Steelworks Incorporated are other sponsors.
The legal drag racing event is dubbed as the biggest motorsport
activity, boosting its nationwide campaign "Race the Strip, not the
Streets." For the first time the Hot August Races will introduce the
prestigious Top 16 "Winner Take All" bracket racing class wherein
only the quickest 16 cars of the event can participate. The event
will also offer several Quick 8 heads-up classes aside from the
regular elapsed time (ET) bracket racing - the Pro Class (13.9 second
and quicker), Hot Streak (14.00 to 15.99 seconds) and the Stock Class
(16.00 second and slower). Time trials will be on August 19 at 1 p.m.
onwards while race proper will be on August 10 starting at 9 a.m.
Ady001 August 14th, 2006, 04:43 AM i agree nccc needs a "car wash" and g-mall too. in fact all davao malls should start getting some shower, but nccc placed in a "highly polluted" area? an overstatement i must say. if that place is highly polluted, ano pa ang itatawag natin sa MM nyan, super duper extreme highly polluted? hehehe
Not that highly polluted to a degree in MM Jun, I mean in Davao terms. traffic is slowly building in the Maa area because of NCCC. OK lang man ang NCCC magsaysay because the color complemented with the environment (blue is good to compliment to "hide" the dirt) But light brown is weird.
Also, NCCC should make use of its advert-boxes.

That's urban planning, Ady. If we say planning, it should be sound and forward planning. That's the job of the City Planning and Development Office (CPDO) but I think it's not doing its job well. The CPDO should anticipate development - plan for urban expansion, for new city development, road and transportation linkages, metropolitanization, environmental protection (not just the CENRO) and make studies of the social and economic impacts (specially to tourism) and benefits that can be derived from these activities.
I wish I could be of BIG help to this effort. I'm helpless.

Priority 1 ang Davao unta sa'kua pangita trabaho but PS Cebu got the first call. Obsessed ako sa Davao until now beacuse honestly I like the place and the people. Smell the durian in downtown. Everytime maka-amoy ko durian, it brings nostalgia referring to my days in Davao in college (summer class ko sa UPMin/2 months ko, visited Davao 5 times within a period of 2 years). And kay mingaw sa Mintal last summer after classes, primi ko ga-suroysuroy bisan wa na kwarta.
I'm planning to go back there kay ganahan ko matudlo sa college but kulang pa'ko sa masteral.
I really like Davao! :)

Sa amo ka puyo! if u wanna teach there (in the future) sa Davao..we have a place in Elenita Heights Mintal. Our other house is in Tagum but thats an hour drive from Davao City..

protected area should be imo. but the threat is connected siya sa matina. and matina is fast urbanizing.

The brown part is part of Davao City, somebody told me when a storm strucked Davao in the 70's it became shallow, tapos nilagyan daw nila Dureza ng filled soil kaya naging Sea Gull but that part your seeing is owned by Aboitez diyan ang turtles hatchlings!

shrine hills is ok pero basi masangit ang eroplano. for me, the best site would be bucana area. davao river meets davao gulf. before na mahitabo kelangan ibalhin ang mga tao nga nagpuyo dinha. since we are coastal city, we might as well capitalize our beautiful coastline. or something na visible from the gulf.

why not put them all together in one. like a pile of durian fruit that shapes like mountain to symbolise mtapo with an eagle clawing the summit. waling waling flower can be put anywhere at the base. wildimagination tells me the monument is huge at airport tower high and standing on a solid base flatform a kilometer off the coast of sta ana wharf. anentertainment centre and restos at the base. a fountain that shoots up seawater to a height visible in talikud. now that,s a dream. hahaha!

Which can also be an icon for Davao. But we need something that can really catch someone's attention. Something which lords over Davao - which can be seen even from Samal Island. And perhaps must be taller even than Marco Polo.

davaoeagle August 14th, 2006, 05:36 PM Davao-Palau air link hailed
By Rizalene P. Acac
THE response of travelers to the new air linkage between Palau and Davao via Asian Spirit has been positive as it has produced tourism and trade opportunities for both destinations. Dermot Keane, Sam’s Tours Palau general manager, said the air linkage have helped them access the new markets and improve bookings in their dive tour operating business in Palau.
He said they want to tap the Singapore-Davao-Palau Asian connecting flights to attract more European tourists. “The European market has not really taken advantage of our tours. So we would introduce them to the connection,” he said. Keane, however, said they do not consider the Philippines or even Davao as markets, although some bookings in the previous months were from Manila.
Annually, Palau hosts some 80,000 tourists mainly from Taiwan, Japan and United States. Keane said 60 percent of the tourists go there to dive, while others go for kayaking, fishing and tour in their historic landmarks. Bryan Clark, managing director of Palau Davao Travel Agency, said enticing Palauans to go to Davao has been very easy because of the wide array of services and products at a much lower cost.
“The main reason they (people from Palau) would go here is that they could shop ‘til they drop,” he said. He said Palauans would surely savor touring and buying in the big malls and shopping centers here. Another reason would be to avail of the medical and dental services from the city’s hospitals. Clark said a $ 495 tour package for Palau tourists would include billeting and tour for three nights and four days.
Although his business just started, Clark said he has already sent a half dozen of Palauans in the past weeks. Both Keane and Clark were exhibitors at the Mindanao Travel and Trade Exposition at the Entertainment of SM Entertainment Davao which ended yesterday. Gia dela Cruz, Asian Spirit Tour’s Desk operator, said flights between the destinations have an average of 50 percent load factor.
She said most of their passengers are Palau nationals and businessmen. The flights are on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sundays. It leaves Davao at 4:45 p.m. and then reaches Palau at 6: 45 p.m.

Jimm's was a resto bar with live band performances. Other days of the weel would have some ballroom dancing. It was so nice at its prime until the 90s.

1. around 70% occupied diay ang landco (so naa diay ghapon market for high rise office condos sa davao..)
2. sa 17th floor, naa pud medical transcriptionist nga office/school did2..Davao First Transcription Center Corporation ang tawag..so dili lang diay tung MTC sa quirino ang medical transcriptionist school sa davao..and maybe..just maybe, our IT industry is now coming to life!

dinabaw what is this David made out of? He is a good example of post modernism....:) I saw the original David in Firenze Italy and I must say...when I am in Davao can we go and look at this David? I admire the real David in Firenze... this one.. :) Is it supposed to be a copy of David in Firenze, maybe not...Well, do you know the history behind this sculpture? Who made it for what purpose, monument, decoration, memory or is it a plane post modernistic peace of art? I am just curious how he ended up standing there? Truly he seems very out of place :)
Are you suggesting this David as a monument somewere?
Wishing you a nice Tuesday tomorrow, min allra bästa vän:)

Davao's ICT sector still vibrant: trade department
THE regional office of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-Southern Mindanao stressed that Davao City's information and communications technology (ICT) sector is still very vibrant.
DTI regional director for Southern Mindanao Merly M. Cruz said such claim is evident in the desire shown by two United States-based call center companies to locate in the city.
Cruz added that the opening of two medical transcription (MT) schools recently is one more concrete indication of the industry's good performance. MT is another field in the ICT industry that has high potentials.
The opportunities in the ICT industry is enormous such that cyber services sector is expected to generate a total of 981,000 jobs and contribute US$11.7 billion in total revenue to the national economy by 2010, Cruz said.
"Davao Region alone is anticipated to rake in additional P1 billion in investments by 2010. Of this figure, 16,000 new jobs will be created," she said.
With the Davao Region Industry Cluster Plan, which is drafted and adopted by the Regional Development Council (RDC), Cruz is optimistic these targets will be attained.
The Davao Region Industry Cluster Plan serves as the roadmap for the eight priority sectors of the region, to wit: banana, mango, coconut, seaweed, wood, mining, eco-tourism, and ICT.
"In the plan, we can already get the necessary information that will help the concerned public and private stakeholders implement initiatives together in boosting the eight industries," she said.

scandinavian girl August 14th, 2006, 10:55 PM Philippine Products For Swedish And Nordic Markets
Nordic countries offer a great export opportunity for local products and provides the Davao region in the Philippines a chance to expand its markets to as many as 14 million potential customers in all of Scandinavia,” Department of Trade and Industry regional director Merly M. Cruz said recently.
By Satirat Dam-ampai
“With that opportunity in the three countries, the Davao Region in Mindanao would have a huge market to showcase and sell its export products,” Cruz said.
"The Nordic countries are open to all we produce and the DTI will work to market and sell all of our products there," Cruz said.
The Philippine Trade and Investment Center in Stockholm, Sweden, cooperates with the import promotion offices of Sweden, Denmark, and Norway to provide assistance to potential exporters from the Philippines, providing market information and advertising in their respective business newsletters, which in turn are disseminated to member companies.
Futhermore, the Association of Swedish Chambers of Commerce in coordination with the business organization of the Nordic countries can assist in business matching of any sales mission going there.
The Association of Swedish Chambers of Commerce is the import promotion arm of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency.

Sweden explores aid for Mindanao
By Bong S. Sarmiento
KORONADAL CITY -- Officials from Sweden have expressed intentions to pour in financial assistance to Mindanao in a bid to accelerate the growth of the island, it was learned Wednesday.
Presidential Assistant for Mindanao Jesus Dureza, chair of the Mindanao Economic Development Council (Medco), said the 10-man delegation from Sweden visited parts of Mindanao a few weeks ago and were briefed on the Mindanao situation and its peace and development initiatives.
The briefing was mainly based on the newly-formulated Mindanao Investment Program (MIP), which is a compilation of ongoing, committed and proposed priority programs and projects in Mindanao generated through a multi-stakeholder consultation, according to a Medco statement.
Dureza said he discussed with the delegation from Sweden Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sidca) the potential areas in Mindanao for future Swedish development assistance.
The delegation was headed by Jan Bjerninger, head of the Asia Department, and Minister Ulf Walden, deputy head of Mission of the Embassy of Sweden.
Dureza said the team also studied the project proposals compiled in the MIP and talked on how the Swedish government can be part of future development undertakings in Mindanao.
The group cited interest in projects that are in line with the Swedish country strategy for the Philippines, particularly those that are focused on poverty alleviation, environment, governance and human rights.
"The Mindanao Investment Program seems to be very interesting. We will look at how we can assist Mindanao in line with our strategic development thrusts for the Philippines," Walden said.
To show Mindanao as a viable destination for peace and development investment, Dureza led the group to a peace and development community in Barangay Tienda Aplaya, Digos City where former Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) rebels are actively engaged in a sandal manufacturing enterprise, with support from the GOP-UN Multi Donor Program Phase 3.
"This community is a concrete output of an effective government and donor partnership that has worked so well for the attainment of peace and progress in Mindanao," Dureza said.
"However, a lot of work still needs to be done in creating this kind of positive change in several other marginalized and conflict-affected communities in Mindanao," he added.
On the other hand, the Department of Interior and Local Government Region XI briefed the group on the status of the Mindanao Basic Urban Services Sector Project (MBUSSP).
Supported by Sidca, the Asian Development Bank and Nordic Development Fund, MBUSSP currently seeks additional funding for more collaborative projects in urban poor areas.
Earlier, Walden and Counsellor Anders Eriksson, regional coordinator for Technical Cooperation in the Embassy of Sweden visited the Davao River Watershed in Davao City to see how the government of Sweden can help rehabilitate and effectively manage the river.
Sweden is the first country to have launched a visit in Mindanao in response to the government's call for support on peace and development in Mindanao through the MIP.
