Japan sets aside P5.3-M for computer projects in the city’s public schools (http://www.mindanaotimes.net/?p=9877)
Written by: Fusilero , Kristianne
Saturday, 26 June 2010

THE government of Japan set aside about P5.3 million this year for the project of Department of Trade and Industry in providing computer laboratory packages to selected public high schools in the city.
The Personal Computers for Public Schools (PCPS) project is now on its fourth phase which aims to develop the Information Technology skills of the students. The total cost of the project in Minadanao where the fourth phase evolved amounted to P170 million which came from the counter-value fund of Japan.
Each public school is entitled to 10 units of desktops that cost a total of P333,333.
In the launching of the PCPS project at the F. Bangoy National High School yesterday, Ambassador Makoto Katsura of Japan said his government has set aside the funding for the project since 2001. He said the government of Japan was glad on the outcome of the first three phases of the PCPS project as it covered 63 percent of the total number of public schools in the country.
“The government of Japan has been giving string support to IT education in the Philippines as we recognize its major role in the global economy. To help realize and maximize IT potentials in the Philippines, the government of Japan is pleased to continue extending its full support to the Philippine government,” Katsura said.

Among the 16 public schools in the city that were recipients of the PCPS project were A. Navarro National High School, Biao National High School, Davao City Special School, E. Ramos National High School, F. Bangoy National High School and Lamanan National High School.
The other schools were the Los Amigos National High School, Marilog National High School, Optaciano National High School, Paquibato National High Schol, Sirib National High School, Tagakpan National High School, Guianga National High School, Talomo National High School and Waan National High School.
Based on the briefer on the project, there were 3,714 public schools were provided with computer laboratory packages in six years. The third phase of the project ended three years ago.
“The PCPS project has also successfully reduced computer backlog in the public secondary education from 75 percent in 2001 when the project started to 37 percent after PCPS Phase 3. This benefited more than a million students who were able to have hands-on training on the use of computers,” said Trade and Industry Secretary Jesli Lapus.

kung meron akong maipagmalaki about davao city aside from 911, clean and wide roads, people's park... eto na siguro yon, davao's modern traffic system by abratique & associates of california. sensorized system complete with signs, road lights and CCTV cameras linked to a central station and 911, i could not ask for more.

most major intersections got CCTV like these intersections in the matina area:

we took also a shot of Davao Traffic Lights Headquarters ang gara! with 911 south headquarters too! kanang CCTV all intersections or just selected areas ?

FYI The Traffic Signalizaton in Davao is not just a "gimmick" but a long term investment for the long term solution on traffic problem, 911 was conceived early 90's , created in 2003 and now it's been upgraded to cater the growing population of Davao City. :)

^^ not all intersections but major intersections. out of 65 traffic lights i can count 40+ major intersections. the 911 and Traffic Central compound sa may SIR ay the best! pasalamat talaga tayo sa LGU natin kasi mahirap ito iimplement. kung may city man ngayon na mag try gayahin ang centralized 911 and traffic system concept ng davao city, aabutin pa ng ilang years bago mag succeed, notwithstanding the budget constraints.

Agree with you Dr. Jude regarding the state of AdDU Covered Court. Remember that's where we had our nightly practices for the glee? This is fresh news from a friend and he himself was a sophomore stude there until he left Davao to continue his studies in Canada. He said, he himself was so glad that the old structure was torn down for the new one. My only worry is that the project is being undertaken by a known skinflint (Fr. Samson) who might compromise the aesthetics due to so much lowballing.

Re: EB- Why don't you swing by Vanco and we'll have our own EB here...lol. I have no travel plans for Toronto but I have for Sanfo 24th of July...:)

Hi Goys. How is true is the news that the old AdDU Covered Court has now been demolished and a modern, spanking enclosed gym is now fastly rising in the same location. This is what I gathered from a visiting friend. It might be good to snap some shots from inside AdDU for this. :)

Really? dapat lang gyud na mapulihan kay makapangos ang salog.

I haven't been to addu for the longest time, kung naa pa tong Student Center sa right side ng court sana inayos na kay kahugnuan man to sya og nawong.

including the new CCTV-cams and the new Davao City Traffic Operation Center.

Councilors okay stores to serve halal food (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/councilors-okay-stores-serve-halal-food)

By Jade C. Zaldivar

THE City Council last week passed an ordinance, authored by City Councilor Ma. Belen Acosta, requiring all food establishments in the city to offer halal food.

The ordinance requires any restaurant, fast food chain, eateries, food stalls in movie houses, school or university canteens and other food establishments or function halls in the city to acquire Halal accreditation from the Davao City Muslim Ulama Halal certifying and monitoring agency.

Click here for Election 2010 updates

All food establishments are required to post or place the word "Halal" within their premises or use the "Halal" logo in their business name in the course of offering Halal food to customers whether they are Muslims or not.

The ordinance now sits at the City Mayor's Office for approval and once approved, it shall take effect 15 days following its publication in a newspaper of local circulation and its posting for three consecutive weeks at conspicuous places in the City Hall.

The resolution specifically states that, owners, proprietors, and managers of all food establishments in the city are required to perform and undertake the following measures in their operation:

* To acquire Halal accreditation from Davao City Muslim Ulama Halal Certifying and Monitoring Agency;

* To display Halal logo in front of food establishments in the course of offering Halal-processed food and beverages;

* Display the necessary documents within their premises pertaining to the Halal accreditation acquired from such office;

* Observe proper sanitary procedures in preparing Halal-processed food and beverages;

* Avoid using kitchen wares and utensils that have been used in preparing pork-based food, in the preparation and processing such Halal food and beverages; and

* To refrain from mixing meat from Haram or forbidden animals with animal meat used or mixed in Halal-processed food.

City to host big expo (http://www.dailymirror.ph/June-2010/June062810/biz1.html)

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews) - Local constructors and real estate developers no longer need to travel to Manila to see for themselves the latest equipment and technology used in their trade as the Philippine Constructors Association, Inc. (PCA) is set to bring them here next week for the biggest construction equipment and building materials exposition in Mindanao.

In a news conference, PCA president Levy Espiritu said the expo, to be held at the convention hall of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas here on July 1-3 will be a showcase of the latest in the construction industry.

“What have been regularly shown in the series of exposition in Manila will be brought here in Mindanao and it will made available to the stakeholders in Mindanao,” Espiritu said.

“All of us start small, and we have realized that for companies to be able to compete, technological innovation is the key,” he said.

Embracing technology, he added, does not mean spending too much. "Constructors don't have to go to Manila to learn new technologies.

Instead, we are bringing them to you."

Among the top brands that have signed up to join the event are CEMEX Phils., Cleamco Industrial Corp., Cobankiat Hardware, Inc., Comer Industrial and Metal Manufacturing Development, Eurodach Philippines, Hitachi Air-Conditioning Products (Philippines) Inc., Holcim Philippins, Koppel Inc., Man Automotive Concessionaires Corp., Monark Equipment, Pacific Paint (Boysen) Phils., Panasonic, Robert Bosch and others.

The event, dubbed as PHILCONSTRUCT Min-danao, will also have a techno forum that is expected to tackle the Revised Implementing Rules and Regulations of RA 9184 by the Government Procurement Policy Board (GPPB) on topics on "Want to Secure Government Contracts?" and "Want to Know More About Warranty Requirements?"

The Philconstruct Mindanao 2010 will showcase five key sections: Building Materials; Construction/Mining Equipment; Intelligent Home; Interiors, and Plumbing and Fixtures.

Manolito P. Madrastro, PCA executive officer, added that industry players will have an opportunity to assess the kind of equipment they would need in their respective businesses.

Seminars will also be held on Alternative Dispute Resolution, the Advantages of Arbitration over Court Litigation and How to File a Claim by Construction Industry Arbitration ommission/Philippine Institute of Contraction Arbitrators and Mediators (CIAC/PICAM).

The Revised Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Standard Specifications will be discussed by the DPWH Bureau of Research and Standards (BRS).

HOLCIM Philippines will conduct the seminar on Concrete Technology: Concrete Fundamentals and Practice. Keith Bacongco / MindaNews

Mayor Duterte congrats DCWD on Indangan well (http://www.dailymirror.ph/June-2010/June062810/biz3.html)

The new and third well to serve Cabantian and expand Indangan service coverage has been blessed and inaugurated last June 18, 2010.

Located in Barangay Indangan, the blessing was officiated by Msgr. Matt Gorgonio, parish priest of the Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal in Indangan, with the presence of Councilor Tomas Monteverde IV, Barangay Indangan Kagawad Ed Balaga, Davao City Water District Directors Charlemagne B. Aldevera and Abdul M. Dataya, officers and staff led by DCWD general manager Rodora N. Gamboa, and some local residents. A short program followed.

Monteverde who represented Mayor Rodrigo R Duterte, read the latter’s message. He congratulated the water utility and said, “with this new line of water supply, many would be able to reap the benefits of DCWD’s expanding services to the public.” He cited DCWD as a classic example of a service-oriented office that never sleeps. He was glad that it can now provide sufficient water pressure to existing customers in Indangan and Cabantian areas.

The mayor also cited the Watershed Code of Davao City as a landmark legislation with a grand design intended to provide sufficient and quality water to all generations of Davaoeños. He called for the protection of the city’s eight identified watersheds.

“Davao City maintains its hard stance of extending full cooperation and assistance to DCWD. We cannot compromise public service as the end-beneficiaries of the fruits of peaceful living are the people of Davao City. DCWD is a very important and critical component of this goal because it has contributed significant efforts for the public to be aware of various issues that confront our environment.”

Kagawad Balaga and local resident Veronica Andevor expressed happiness and gratitude that the long wait for quantity and quality water was finally over. Gone were the days of drawing and hand-ferrying water from the artesian well. For now, intermittent or low water pressure has become a thing of the past with the commissioning of the Indangan well that has boosted water supply in Cabantian and Indangan.

Gamboa announced that the service areas presently enjoy 24 hours water supply. She commits DCWD to continue providing quality service in Cabantian, Indangan and in all other areas. It will also build more water facilities in its other water systems to assure customer service satisfaction.

Indangan well produces 750 gallons per minute or about 4,088 cubic meters a day. DCWD management said that augmenting water pressure in its service areas, it has corrected intermittent water supply and low pressure in Cabantian but clarified that it can meet demand for additional service up to 800 new connections momentarily.

The previously reported additional 3,459 water connections could not yet be fully realized because this new well presently answers for the low outputs of Cabantian well No. 1 in Communal and Cabantian well No.2. The pump motor of Cabantian well No. 1 will still have to be upgraded from 125 horse power (HP) to 150 HP while the second well’s capacity has deteriorated to only 400 gallons per minute (gpm) from 770 gpm and will be upgraded by the first quarter of 2011, when by then requirements shall have been met.

DCWD management also explained the total project cost reached P9,236,533.58 that accounted for the actual well drilling and site development including the control house, pump and motor, and discharge line. The project was done by TGV Builders, Inc. under the supervision of the DCWD Project Monitoring Office.

Presently, Indangan water supply system (WSS) is integrated into Cabantian WSS. DCWD management said that it will eventually be disengaged after general improvements of Indangan WSS are completed. mecm

Middle-class subdivision to be set up near airport (http://www.mindanaotimes.net/?p=9913)
Written by: Francisco , Carmelito Q.
Monday, 28 June 2010

ANOTHER housing project, this time a 4.7-hectare middle class subdivision, will be built in front of the Davao International Airport.
Wally Alvarez, part owner of the BDA Holiday Prime Properties, said the Orchid Hill Subdivision will feature 156 medium-rise housing units whose prices would range between P3.5 million to P4 million.
He added that the project will also have a commercial section as it is very proximate to the airport and one of the big schools in the city, that of the Jose Maria College, a school run by televangelist Apollo C. Quiboloy of the Jesus Christ the Name Above Every Name.
“We hope to maximize the use of the property because it has a good location,” he said.
The company, which is also partly-owned by the Bangayan family, one of the prominent business owners in the city, has started the ground development of the project, said Alvarez.
“We are hoping to start the construction of the houses before the end of the third quarter of the year,” Alvarez told the TIMES, pointing out that the smallest house will have a total area of 180 square meters.
He added the company is looking at local buyers as well as Filipino workers abroad as key markets for the project. “There are already inquiries, but we are not into pre-selling just yet. We want to put everything in place before we start the pre-selling,” he said.

Some of those making inquiries were relatives of families working abroad as “they have the cash to invest in this kind of project,” he said.
This only confirmed the expectation of the construction industry that one of the main factors that will push the industry up is the inflow of remittances from Filipinos living or working abroad.
Manolito P. Madrasto, executive director of the Philippine Construction Association, said that the industry is expected to register a 7% growth, similar to the growth it achieved last year, and one factor would be the amount of remittances from overseas Filipinos.
Madrasto explained that overseas Filipinos and their families have considered investment in housing as among the top priorities. This was a “change in paradigm” because in the past, the money sent back to the families was used either to buy consumer goods or used to sending students to schools.
“Now, they have realized that aside from sending their children to school, those working abroad also consider a home as a priority,” he said.

mali po yun...

the correct info is... One of the largest city in the world in terms of total land area.

its size compared to other cities in the philippines, about sa city proper naman or yung non-stop agglomeration of commercial developments, the best example would be:

Quezon City's total land area = 16,112.12 hectares (biggest in NCR)
Davao City Proper land area = 17,080 hectares (7% of the city's total land area of 244,000 hectares)

ganyan kalaki ang city proper ng davao city, comparable to the whole quezon city. but of course, di hamak na mas progressive ang quezon city lalo na sa highrise buildings, because mostly sa davao city proper, average of 3-4 storey buildings lang with a meager number of midrises (7 to 11) and highrises (12 to 18) in its vicinity.

actually ok lng man after Matina Xing, sa Ulas na mag tapok next tanan (meron din daw plan dati si Erap for an Ulas flyover)...ang mga vehicles that pass through Matina Xing eh mahati kasi going to Bangkal, Pangi and Aplaya...then, ang Matina palengke adds to the mix...I think if meron underpass or flyover, it will ease the flow, kasi maeliminate na ung going to bangkal na sasakyan that pass the crossing itself. :D

Davao to be promoted as prime destination
Monday, June 28, 2010

By RJ Nieto

TRAVEL and tour operators from all over the country will now promote Davao City as a prime destination after a familiarization tour that ended in a farewell dinner Saturday at the Royal Mandaya Hotel.

The tour was hosted by the city government and organized by the National Association of Independent Travel Agencies Inc. (Naitas).

Click here for Election 2010 updates

In attendance were Naitas-affiliated travel agencies from Metro Manila, Bicol, Bulacan, Mindoro and Rizal, among others, assisted by Naitas-Davao president Riza Canda of AquaGem Travel and Tours, Naitas-Davao president Wanda Teo and city tourism officer Rizal Giovanni Aportadera.

In his keynote Davao City Mayor Rody Duterte said: "Our city is known for impeccable peace and order policy implementation. Although there are some difficulties, we put peace and order at the top of all our priorities."

A couple of participating travel company representatives, in an interview, expressed optimism on Davao's tourism potentials.

Rizal-based RL Ecotravel Tours Co. Ltd. Envoy Luisa Chua said: "There are many interesting places to visit in Davao like the Eden Garden, Samal Island, and the Philippine Eagle Center."

Rochelle Garcia, also from RL Ecotravel, said: "We especially like the Philippine Eagle Center because it's very educational. We can easily promote the site to schools and colleges who are looking for places to visit on field trips."

Emililou Sison of Zebedee Travel and Tours, also from Rizal, also said: "A lot of our clients are worried about the cost of tours and vacations. It is nice to know that the cost of living in Davao is very low. It is a major factor."

Most of those interviewed cited peace and order, low cost of living, the warmth of the people, and the abundance of unique and interesting tourist spots as Davao's major tourism selling points.

The familiarization tour involved visits to various tourist spots in Davao City, island-hopping tours, and a general tour around the city.

It is intended to educate travel agencies about the nuances of Davao, so that they can better market the city to their clientele. (RJN)

you're really a davaoeno kasi kahit diversion road na tratrafikan ka na hahaha. 1 minute waiting sa intersection nabwibwisit na, ano kayang masasabi sa mga 15 minute waiting people sa manila?

ngek, lipay na kaayo ko anang 1 minute lang nga waiting. just to cite an experience I had regarding MM traffic yesterday night when I was on my way to work to the Fort from Cubao. The worst traffic i've experienced so far in MM in most recent years. Literal nga bumper-bumper to standstill gyud ang trapik! :bash: :bash:

Unsa na lang kaha hitsura sa trapik sa waDab 5-10 years gikan karon kung dili na masolusyonan? :?
