In its bid to advance international trade, the Sasa Baseport (also known as Davao Port) received 15 new ships of foreign registry and one Philippine-registered vessel in the past five months.
“We are very pleased about the level of confidence that the international shipping industry and the maritime community in general have bestowed in our port,” said port district manager Abdussabor Sawadjaan on the positive turnout of Davao Port’s foreign shipcalls.
This number of new calls is a testament to the Philippine Port Authority’s (PPA) strong commitment to the export industry that is anchored on its strong partnership with the cargo handling operators (CHOs) in determining the market demands and forwarding requirements of shippers/exporters/consolidators using sea transport.
PDM Sawadjaan said since PPA earns much from vessel and cargo charges, especially foreign ones, it ensures the efficiency of the ports so that these ships would call more frequently as these will largely benefit the local economy.
Port management office (PMO) Davao Port manager Atty. Christian Santillan, likewise, lauded the commendable efforts extended by CHOs in forging partnerships with foreign shipping companies to aggressively promote the Davao region as a transshipment port for export quality fresh bananas with markets in Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, parts of the Middle East, New Zealand and Europe.
Davao Baseport currently has two CHOs, namely, the Davao Integrated Port Stevedoring Services Corp. (DIPSSCOR) and Filipinas Port Services, Inc. (FILPORT). DIPPSCOR has already achieved ISO 9001-2000 accreditation for its quality management system (QMS), and its constant leveling up in terms of corporate/business practices.
The new vessels were duly welcomed by a joint party composed of the PPA and the CHO in simple ceremonies where each ship captain, in behalf of the crew on board, customarily received plaques of recognition from the PPA and CHOs, respectively, as a gesture of Filipino courtesy and hospitality to the first-time guests.
Here is the complete list of the vessels which have made their maiden voyages to Davao Port from January to May 2010: 1) MV Mell Siloso (Germany); 2) MV Ratha Bhum (Thailand); 3) MV Kota Nekad (Singapore); 4) MV 2GO 2 (Philippines); 5) MV Hansa Ravensburg (Liberia); 6) MV Gao Qiang (Hong Kong); 7) MV Alexandros Theo (Marshall Islands); 8) MV Kota Hening (Singapore); 9) MV Kota Raja (Singapore); 10) MV Leader (Russia); 11) MV Jost (Liberia); 12) MV Mell Semakau (Antigua and Barbuda); 13) MV Mell Springleaf (Antigua and Barbuda); 14) MV Scan Oceanic (Germany); 15 MV Thanh Thuy (Vietnam) and; 16) MV William Strait (Liberia).
Of the total, 13 were container type carrying mostly bananas to destinations abroad while the three others were bulk or general cargo carriers. The lone locally-registered container vessel is owned by Aboitiz Jebsen Transport System Corp.

Seeing the need to hire competitive information technology specialists in the BPO industry, the Davao-based Concentrix Institute has opened a training course that will lead to a certification window, the first of its kind in Mindanao .
Concentrix site director Gary Dumael bared that the growth in number of IT graduates is not that significant to the needs of IT specialists in the industry.
“We are helping the academe cope with this gap by providing our own training course and opening a certification window through Pearson VUE as its Authorized Test Center for the Cisco Certified Network Associate”, he said.
Dumael announced the BPO’s plan of hiring about 400 CCNAs by the fourth quarter of this year.
“ We are preparing this as we welcome an exciting technology, the newest, which involves voice and video.”, he added.
Instead of going to Cebu or Manila to take the CCNA certification exam, the opening of Concentrix Test center is good news to Mindanaoans.
Aside from the test window, the institute also offers a training course that uses state-of-the-art facilities and cutting edge equipment, on-site, off-site and in-house training courses combined with structure classroom discussion, hands-on activities and self-paced learning.
The entire training course runs for 33 days, on Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 6pm, with a training fee of P26,000, or P40,000 for the training with certification exam package.
For the six batches, the institute has trained a total of 77 IT trainees who have pursued Cisco certification after the course. (PIA/Mai Gevera)

Big players are not threats, say local land developers
Monday, 17 May 2010 00:00
PDF
by Lorie Ann A. Cascaro
Local land developers in Davao City like Kisan Lu Lands Inc., Santos Land Development Corp. and Alsons Development and Investment Corp. do not feel threatened by their big competitors which are operating nationwide like Camella Homes, Filinvest, and the like.
“We don’t consider them to be threats to our business plainly because we are also proud to say we belong to big time land developers whose proposed projects compete with distinction compared to others--from location, concept, amenities, facilities and price. We deal with competition by offering honest information and affordable homes with agents armed with all marketing needs,” said Alberto Egot Jr., marketing manager of Kisan Lu.
Kisan Lu
Based in Davao City, Kisan Lu Lands Incorporated has completed 11 housing projects in different locations in Davao and General Santos City. Particularly in Davao City, Kisan Lu was the developer of NHA projects in Agdao, Ma-a, and Mamay in Buhangin, Alpha Executive Homes in Matina, Kadayawan Homes in Bangkal, and Gulfview Executive Homes.
Its new projects are Twin Palms in Ma-a, Amiya Resort Residences in Puan, Bambu Estate in Mintal and Santiago Villas in Catalunan Grande.
Occupying a total land area of about 61 hectares for both its newest high and low projects and proposing an extension of Amiya which is 60 has., Kisan Lu covers approximately 121 has. in Davao City. It has already offered huge land area for housing projects and has built thousands of houses both high and low end, Egot Jr. said.
“The concept of each of our project is already our selling point. “Twin Palms is the first balinese-themed community in the city located in Maa. AMIYA is a Thailand-inspired community with the exceptional amenities that set us apart from others. In Amiya, we are not directly selling a lot, because actually this is all about lifestyle and wellness. Where can you find a community in Davao that has Meditation Garden? A swimming pool that is considered the biggest pool in Mindanao?” he said.
In line with their company’s mission and vision that states “... to maintain the beauty and balance of nature” Egot Jr. said they have conceptualized BAMBU ESTATE in Mintal as ZEN type community. Here, “NATURE is preserved.”
Kisan Lu offers free house models as options and plans of lot owners, thus no need for architects. “The company is composed of the best think-tanks in the city from marketing, engineering and from the owners themselves,” he said.
Santos Land
Occupying 151.28 has. in Davao City, Santos Land is another local developer that never fears the emerging big players in the housing market. “They are our partners in the industry. We move in the same circle and it’s nice to be at peace with everyone. We compete with our own selves. Every time, we strive to produce much better products than what we already did,” Estela Aguilos, sales and marketing manager of Santos Land, said.
Santos Land had contributed PhP1.411 million in real estate taxes and PhP0.354 million in business permit fees in 2009. It had completed several housing projects in Davao City such as La Vista Monte in Diversion Road, Matina, Priscilla Estates and Cecilia Heights Phases 1 & 2 in Cabantian, Remedios Heights, Nova Tierra Village in Lanang, El Rio Vista in Bacaca, Ciudad de Esperanza in Buhangin, Tierra Verde and Vista Verde in Sasa and Hacienda Heights. They have on-going projects in Priscilla Estates in Cabantian and La Vista Monte in Matina.
Having best quality products and customer service as its selling points, Santos Land always focus on improving the quality of products and services, Aguilos said.
Alsons Dev
Are they threats? “No. We believe that everyone has a space in the market. And, we will just continue creating and delivering quality development projects with integrity,” Jolla Soriaga, Business Development Manager of Alsons Development and Investment Corporation.
The reputation and track record of their people and quality projects, according to Soriaga, are the selling points of their company; “Our values, sense of responsibility on the environment and our host communities where our projects are located,” she said.
Alsons Dev has occupied about 278 has. in Davao city with completed projects such as Ladislawa Garden Village in Buhangin, Woodridge Park and Las Terrazas in Ma-a, Northcrest in Cabantian and Buhangin, Fernwood in Toril, and Molave Homes in Indangan and Buhangin. Its on-going projects include Woodlane in Ma-a Diversion, Northcrest Phase 2 in Buhangin, and Eden Ridge in Toril.

rodincouch July 3rd, 2010, 08:21 AM Entrepreneurs invited in biz development week (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/entrepreneurs-invited-biz-development-week)
A BUSINESS top official stressed Friday that the city's business sector is 90 percent composed of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
This as Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCII) president Robert Quinto invites the city's MSME entrepreneurs to participate in the MSME Development week set to begin on Monday.

"Talagang malaki ang contribution nila sa income generation. This week-long activity is mainly focused on teaching them, making them stronger in their engagement in business," Quinto said on television.
The MSME Development week is themed "Negosyo, Landas Tungo sa Kaunlaran," which will be launched during the flag raising rite on Monday headed by Mayor Sara Duterte outside the City Hall.
"We have long planned for this. We are encouraging those with small businesses especially those with big ideas to come and participate our trainings and seminars. This will be for free so really want to reach all MSMEs to come and participate," Quinto said.
Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-Davao Region, a partner of DCCCII in the event, also extended their invitation to MSME entrepreneurs.
There will be exhibit booths at the City Council building and at the NCCC Mall activity center in Matina, DTI-Davao City Director Teolulo Pasawa said during Kapihan sa PIA media forum.
"We will be providing service seminars, trainings, and awarding of the most outstansing MSMEs here," he added.
Quinto and Pasawa also stressed that participating in the activities will give the MSME entrepreneurs opportunities to get new ideas to improve their businesses.
"There will be information on the food processing industry in the city, there will be seminar on food-related concerns," Pasawa said.
"Bisan kinsa pwede muadto. Especially mga nawadan ug trabaho, OFWs nga nibalik diri, housewives gusto magnegosyo nga home-based (Anyone can come, especially those who have lost their jobs, overseas Filipino workers who have come back to their homes, or housewives who want to start their businesses at their homes)," Quinto said.
"Pinakagwapo is kung sila start ug negosyo sila hatag employment dili kay sila ang mangita ug trabaho (What's best in creating your own business is you provide employment for other people rather than looking for a job yourself)," he added. (Jade C. Zaldivar)

DOST is inviting local inventors, manufacturers, designers, creative researchers, and students (both tertiary and secondary levels) to participate in the 2010 Mindanao Invention Contest.
This year's theme is "Filipino Invention and Innovation: The Way Forward."
Local inventors, researchers, and students are eligible to join in any of the six contest categories of the invention contest: 1) Invention Category (Tuklas Award); 2) Utility Model Category; 3) Industrial Design Category; 4) Creative Research Category (Likha Award); 5) Student Creative Research Category (Sibol Award) for High School; and 6) Student Creative Research Category (Sibol Award) for college.

Wednesday, 30 June 2010 00:00
The Bureau of Customs (BOC) has exceeded its collection target for the first half of the year despite the underperformance of its major ports. Data showed that as of June 16, the BOC has already exceeded its tax collection target of P111.07 billion by P7.34 billion for the first six months of the year.
....
The ports of Cagayan de Oro, Zamboanga, and Clark Field also did not hit their respective collection targets.
Cagayan de Oro missed its target collection of P1.82 billion by P272 million, while Zamboanga barely reached half of its P19-million goal as it only collected P7.9 million for the first six months.
.....
Among the major gateways to the country, the Port of Manila—the country’s second biggest—had the largest surplus collection of P5.18 billion, followed by Batangas Port which recorded an excess revenue of P2.58 billion, BOC said.
.....
Among the medium-sized ports, Subic Bay posted the largest surplus with P323 million or an actual collection of P2.21 billion, followed by Davao with a surplus of P205 million or an actual revenue of P1.53 billion.
Cebu Port, which has the biggest collection burden among the medium-sized ports, posted an excess of P50.1 billion as it posted a revenue of P3.32 billion against its P3.27-billion target.
Other ports that were able exceeded their collection target include Iloilo (by P429 million), San Fernando (by P107 million), Aparri (by P42 million), Tacloban (by P11 million) and Surigao (by P2.8 million).

After all, WE ARE STILL LIVING IN A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY. Ma taas man ang Davao o ang CdeO, layo ra ta's kumingking sa mga development sa uban lugar. Susme! Eh mas lalo namang nakaka heart burn ang Ayala Hotel, Ayala Condo, SM Expansion, at isa pang SM Mall no!
I see. No probs, Dar!
How will one SB give us heartburns when we currently have more than a hundred nice coffee shops scattered all around the city? I love to have SB around and it will happen pretry soon but to think of it as a marquee for a city's progress is flat out stupidity. I guess we really have to stop being drawn into their small town mentality.

Exactly, Sir! We have our homegrown coffee shops to brag about. Kung meron mang dapat na ipagmalaki, dapat ay yung gawang pinoy. SB would be a good player sa local coffee shop market, pero makita sad nako nga naay mapatay pud ni nga lokal nga negosyo. luoy sad...
Og unta, SB musupport pag-ayo sa local beans...

SB is overrated by those people who havent experienced hanging out in SBs or rarely visit the coffee shop. :D I often meet up with friends in SB but it's not really something to be so excited or go gaga about. :D For those people who are in places where SBs are so common, it's just another establishment or coffee shop same as it is just another Mc Do or Jollibee.
Cguro, what's nice with having an SB in a particular place is the familiarity to what d coffee shop offers to those who have been its frequent customers or SB afficionados. In my case, I would still enjoy my fave chocolate cream chip frappuccino even if i'm in cebu or away from metro manila. Or my close friend wouldnt miss his Banoffee Pie if we will visit a city with an SB. But beyond that? hmmmmm wala na....for me, it's not even an economic indicator. Comparing the prices of SB to a local coffee shop in Davao City? u cant feel the difference, it's just the same, well as far as i am concerned.
Well, part of the price you gotta pay when we talk about urban growth. By the way, we have a place jan sa Elenita Heights too. :D I wonder how Elenita looks now after almost 10 yrs of being away. Hmmmm looking at some pix online, murag mao ra gihapon. lolz..
Anyway, I guess there's nothing wrong with constructing such projects atleast it would also disperse development to the countryside. However, i hope that there are areas in the city where trees are also being planted to counteract the effect of converting those said areas in Mintal into residential subdivisions. AFAIK, those areas where Elenita Heights, DECA, Camella, and Bambu are situated are not really protected forest areas. Kung naa may mga kahoy didto, kung dili lubi, mga kakaw, kasagbutan, or the like. lolz. I sure do hope that the new projects will not look like a mass socialized housing like what we have in Elenita. Sana it will be a green project with parks, open space for gardens and mini forest like projects, etc within these new subdivisions. :D

A NEW DESTINATION FOR SUCCESS AWAITS YOU
Posted by admin on May 31st, 2010
Located in the Southeastern part of Mindanao, Davao is a sprawling metropolis of over 2,400 square kilometers and is home to more than 1.4 million people. It is one of the fast-growing cities in the country and has been hailed as the center of commerce and trade in Mindanao. A vast 102,000 square kilometres of land, the region is also abundant with year-round rainfall and shelters the country’s only typhoon-free zone.
Filled with opportunities amid vast urbanization, Davao is now also the perfect venue for the biggest regional construction show to date – PHILCONSTRUCT MINDANAO 2010.
“After the success we’ve been having in Manila, it is time to bring the biggest and best construction event in the country to Mindanao – this is the destination for success! Take part in this exciting event with us and see the business opportunities available for your company. This is one show you definitely should not miss!” said Anthony “Tito” Fernandez, President of the Philippine Constructors Association.
As an added feature, the event will be held coinciding HVAC/R MINDANAO 2010. Organized by the Philippine Society of Ventilating, Air-Conditioning, and Refrigerating Engineers Inc. (PSVARE), this unique trade fair will provide the vital link between industry players in the region and their counterparts both here as well as abroad.
This event will not only attract buyers from the country’s two most progressive cities of Davao and Cagayan de Oro but will also bring in potential investors from the CARAGA region, ARMM, SOCSARGEN, Northern Mindanao, and the Zamboanga Peninsula – all with a combined population of over 16 million people.
This is the perfect time and place to build your business. Discover the opportunities this booming city has to offer. Join PHILCONSTRUCT MINDANAO 2010.
Focusing on Infrastructure Development & Economic Growth
Over the last few years, Davao has been actively pursuing and promoting infrastructure development in the region. Among its best ticket projects are an 82.7-kilometer stretch allotted specially for the city’s Light Rail project that is estimated to bring in about Php 240 billion and a 23-kilometer coastal road venture amounting to almost Php 800 million. The city is also eyeing to build theme parks that will serve as a new hotspot in the country’s tourism map. Set to be the first in the region, this new project will cater to the 30-million market of both Mindanao and Visayas.
reality check

As your co-organizer, we will be inviting all the industry players and decision-makers from all over Mindanao to come to the show and see the products & services you are promoting. This is the perfect time for the industry to get together in our city and explore possibilities,” said Wilfredo Guerzon, President of the Davao Contractors Association Center Inc.
In keeping with the national aspiration of becoming another “Asian Tiger”, the region has also initiated a massive infrastructure program focusing on the upgrade and expansion of telecommunications and the physical integration of the whole island. A modern telecommunications network, incorporating IDD-NDD, cellular, Internet, fax, telegram and satellite broadcasting, already services all major sites and is now being expanded to rural areas thus making PHILCONSTRUCT MINDANAO 2010 a perfectly timed event.

kung mag bus ka, sakay ka motorcycle ba sa damosa padulong diversion (kung ok lang sa driver, di kasi sila pwede mamasada sa diversion part) then sakay ka bus, or sakay ka jeep (panacan, tibunco, bunawan, lasang route either of them pwede) baba lang ka sa DPWH then sakay bus.
kung mag bus mga 1 and a half hours or 2 ang byahe ana.

I can't wait sa sunod nakong visit........ laag napod. :)
yes, naka line up na daw ang mga hi rise projects sa davao...its long overdue though  and after the completion of abreeza diha gyud siguro magtapok tanan...
It's remarkable to note that all of these local projects will be commencing at these times considered as the end part of the boom and bust cycle of the Philippine's real estate industry (to those who are unaware, we are in the boom part :) ). Real estate both residential and commercial. ;) I just hope that we in Davao have a different cycle too. ;)

SM places high hopes for Cebu IMAX theater
Companies
Written by Willy Rodolfo III / Reporter
Sunday, 04 July 2010 19:20
EXECUTIVES of SM Cinemas expressed confidence on the success of the new IMAX theater in the usually frugal market of Cebu, despite admitting to about four years of delays for the technology to be brought to the city.
Allan Florendo, assistant vice president for marketing of SM Cinemas, said the company has planned to bring the IMAX technology to its mall in Cebu City for several years now.
“We wanted Cebu to be really ready for the IMAX experience,” he said during a first official screening of the 450-seater cinema at the SM City Cebu recently.
The cinema will formally open to the public on July 9 and will feature the IMAX 3D version of Avatar.
The company plans to roll out this theatre technology in three more sites by next year—Davao, Fort Bonifacio and SM South Mall.
The IMAX theater joins the seven digital and standard cinemas in the SM mall, while bringing another first, a digital, no-reel projector to the system, Florendo said.
The IMAX motion picture format was developed in Canada and features wider screens and improved resolution and sound compared with ordinary projectors. SM holds the exclusive license on the technology in the country.

SINGAPORE Airlines recently gave out free tickets to 80 children—their tickets out of abuse.
“Someday, some of you will become teachers, politicians or even airplane pilots. Hopefully, one or more will work with us and say ‘I was a SIA scholar,’” SIA Ltd. Philippines station manager Kevin Tan told 35 of the new batch of children the airline awarded with scholarships for primary education for school year 2010-2011.
With the other 45—in Bicol, Cebu and Davao—Singapore’s flagship carrier’s grants brings it to nearly 900 children. They are as young as 4 and as old as 18, who were rescued from physical or sexual abuse or abandonment by the Bantay Bata program of ABS-CBN Foundation Inc.
...........................................
By the seventh year, in 2009, SIA has sponsored a total of 815 grants: 352 in Manila; 222 in Bantay Bata’s Children’s Village in Norzagaray, Bulacan; 156 in Davao; 84 in Cebu; and, one in Bicol.

FOUR public schools in the region were recently named The Outstanding Watch Schools (Tows) for school year 2009-2010.
Watch (We Advocate Time Consciousness and Honesty) is a joint values advocacy movement between JCI Senate Philippines in partnership of the Department of Education (DepEd), Commission on Higher Education, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, and the Office of the President for Education.
Supported by DepEd-Davao Regional Director Susana Teresa Estigoy, heads of four public schools here received their awards during the celebration of the First Anniversary Project of Watch at the Ballroom Hall, Bayview Park Hotel, Manila last June 10, DepEd-Davao Region Public Information Officer Lorenzo Mendoza said Friday.
Magugpo Pilot Central Elementary School (MPCES) of Tagum City Division, under the supervision of School Division Superintendent Nenita Lumaas and EPS in Makabayan Antonia Bugna, named the country's best punctuality and honesty advocate, awarded first prize for the nationwide search for outstanding Watch school.
From Davao City, Don Manuel Gutierrez Elementary School received second place and Paaralang Elementarya ng Salvacion in Panabo City, Davao del Norte, ang Guihing Central Elementary School in Davao del Sur followed after, completing the Tows top awards.
According to DepEd Special Events unit head Luzviminda Dela Rosa, five schools in country emerged as the best, the top four of which are from the region.
There were 21 schools that vied for the national search out of hundreds of school districts, division, and regional levels in the country, Mendoza said.
"It is with great pride and humility that our schools received such recognition. It brings honor to receive such awards for advocating the significance of time consciousness and instilling the value of honesty among the students and faculties," Mendoza said.
Also, receiving the grand prize during the ceremony were MPCES principal Gregorio Acebedo and Maria Acebedo, school Watch coordinator. (Jade C. Zaldivar)

rodincouch July 5th, 2010, 06:11 AM Avila heads city agri office (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/avila-heads-city-agri-office)
DAVAO City Mayor Sara Duterte has chosen former city councilor Leonardo Avila III to head the City Agriculture Office.
In saying she will prioritize maximizing the city's potential for agricultural production during her term, Duterte also said that she has appointed Avila as the city agriculturist.
"We're also looking towards developing our agri lands," Duterte said in an interview Saturday during the re-opening of the Nephrology Center of Davao.
Duterte said she "looks forward" to exploring the creation of a food terminal in there city, which would connect to neighboring areas.
She also said this would be among the things she would consider constructing once she decided to acquire a loan from the Development Bank of the Philippines, which expressed willingness to finance the city's infrastructure projects.
"If we want to improve on our agriculture (production), then we could create a food terminal. Along with this we are also looking at developing the mechanism to maximize the income generation (of farmers) through cold storage," Duterte said in vernacular.
"From the National Government, the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) has expressed their willingness to work with us regarding the irrigation of lands here in the city," she added.
This coincided with the plan of Avila, who in earlier interviews have expressed desire to improve the city's potential for sustainable agriculture.
Avila told Sun.Star earlier that the city is the only highly-urbanized city in the country with almost a hundred thousand hectares, which are agricultural lands.
"Imagine, we are earning this much now but if we would also utilize this great potential in agriculture dako pa kaayo ang pwede nato mahimo (we could still do a lot more)" said Avila, former chair of City Council committee on environment.
In a separate interview Saturday, Avila expressed gratitude to Duterte in choosing him and "giving him the chance to help the city's development."
"The job as city agriculturist is complementary to what I did before as the council chair for environment. Good envi(ronmental) management enhances agricultural productivity. At the same time bad agricultural management contribute to envi degradation," he said.
Avila described sustainable agriculture as maximizing use of the available resources in an area, producing enough for the populace, and improving further so there is surplus enough to market agricultural goods outside the area.
"It is more sustainable when you support your own farmers, maximize the lands use for agriculture. If you help them generate their income then you are helping everybody as a whole. I also look at using organic fertilizer para mabawasan ang dependence sa chemical-based fertilizer. Using cold storage would also help the small farmers to protect their income. You can preserve your perishable goods the better, you won't be pressured to sell your goods at a lower price because you have the equipment to keep them fresh," he said.
Avila also illustrated the benefit of making a food terminal in the city.
"We are strategically placed in Mindanao. We are highly urbanized but we also have this huge potential to develop our agriculture produce...If we create our self a food terminal then everyone will come in here. Farmers can sell their own produce at a price. We could literally celebrate our agriculture sector, provide the venue for income generation," he said.
"Agriculture, environment, and social services delivery will be the sectors that would receive the most pressure in the long run. In the nest twenty years most of the world's population will flock in cities," Avila added. (Jade C. Zaldivar)

THE Nephrology Center of Davao (NCD) Dialysis Center will upgrade its equipment to compete with other centers.
Trinidad Ola, administrator for Mindanao Nephro Group of Dialysis Centers, said that by August the center will adopt a new technology to improve its quality service but will still be affordable for those with renal problem.
The center has 15 machines with a machine costing about P1 million. Ola said those with coverage of the Philippine Health Insurance Inc., a government-run health insurance, will pay about P800 for every dialysis season for 26 sessions per quarter, or twice a week.
“Before, people who had renal problem had short life span because they could not afford the cost of regular dialysis treatment at P2,250 (per session),” she said.
Opened in 2000, the center was transferred to its new location at Door 6, Carriedo Blbg./ J.P. Laurel Ave.
“Patients undergo dialysis in order to clean the blood streams and remove excess fluids,” said Yvonne Quizon, nursing care coordinator of the center.

dinabaw July 5th, 2010, 06:47 AM If Haven’s Peak Highland Resort in Maragusan, Compostela Valley can be compared to a fruit, then durian would be it. After tasting it, one foreign journalist described the controversial fruit this way: “It smells like hell but it tastes like heaven.”
Haven’s Peak is just like that, too. Going up is like hell but once you’re in the top it’s as if you’re in heaven.
The resort is nestled on Tarago Hills facing the town with 208 beautifully landscaped steps leading to its tidy but beautiful lobby. Count that – 208 steps! You may survive the first 60 steps but if you continue walking without stopping, you’re courting for trouble – especially if you don’t exercise regularly! So much that there are three stop-overs for those who are dead tired!
“I thought I could go on without stopping,” my friend Jose Rey (JR for short) L. Subaldo told me when we were sitting at the bench of the second stop-over area. “I have to catch my breath before I could take another step.”
But once you’re on the lobby, it’s another story. You get to see the whole town of Maragusan. You can even catch a glimpse of people walking and vehicles going to and from. In the early morning, it provides sight of the picture-perfect and picturesque view of green foggy mountains appearing like a painting. Or “like backdrop of a stage,” JR quipped.
“Although we opened this resort only in 2005,” June Louie Ibañez (he wants to be called PJ) told us in an interview, “we have succeeded in making the mountain resort as one of the town’s tourist destination.”
In fact, it has been featured already in the bestselling The Lonely Planet. “We really didn’t know how we landed in its pages,” PJ said. “It was not until one Australian guy called me and asked me how to get here.”
PJ, who is the resident manager of the resort, gave him directions. Curious, he asked how the guy got his phone number. “From The Lonely Planet,” the Aussie replied.
According to PJ, the area was sort of a vacation place for the owner, Edith F. Julian whenever she wanted to be away from her work in Davao City.
“Edith is from this town and whenever she wanted to be alone or just wanted to have a peace of mind, she returned to this place,” PJ said. Later on, her friends cajoled her to convert the place into a resort. She did!
Today, people from different walks of life come to appreciate the resort. Its tribal huts and two-storey dormitories are just perfect place to stay. Both the Lantaw Barbeque and Seafood Grill House, and Terraza Adela Bar and Coffee Shop offer a great place to dine and unwind while viewing the whole town. The ambience is just superb during the day; at night, it is even spectacular.
“I bought the land way back in 2003,” Edith recalls. “I bought small parcels until it reached to 1.7 hectares. By 2004, I decided to start a resort instead of a rest house. I have thought that if I love the place, then others might have the same feeling as I have.”
The resort now occupies about 2.7 hectares. “I have many plans to upgrade the resort,” she says. “Topping the list of my priority projects is the cable car. As the resort is highland, cable car is a necessity. I’m excited with this project; we are finalizing the plans. Hopefully, it will be finished this year.”
She is also thinking of putting up a zip line. “This will follow after the cable car but it will be dependent on the demand from our guests and visitors. We are thinking of other activities that will compliment to the resort.”
Everyone raves about the healing wonders that a visit to the spa can give to the body and mind. So much so that Edith is also thinking of having a spa in her resort. “My guests are my concern,” she explains. “I want them to have the best comfort while staying in Haven’s Peak.”
Unlike other resorts that are owned by a group of people, Haven’s Peak is a single proprietorship. “I thank God that I survive having it without partners. I exclusively manage the resort although I give PJ the full authority to implement the policies I have.”
Edith works full time in Davao City. “Although I’m too busy with commitment here, I still find time to oversee the resort every now and then – especially during weekends and holidays,” she says.
When asked what inspired the Bachelor of Science in Commerce degree holder (her major is marketing and she graduated from Rizal Memorial College in Davao City) to put up the resort, she answered: “Maybe because I’m sporty, homebody, and nature lover.”
Another plus factor is the fact that she loves to travel. “I travel a lot with my job. During those travels, I see to it that I try to mix business with leisure to get many ideas,” she says.
If you want to stay at the Haven’s Peak Highland Resort, contact PJ Ibañez at these numbers: 0918-432-8865 or 0905-651-0906. Edith Julian can be reached at 0926-719-7558.

No two skylines are alike, what i love about Davao's skyline is that we dont have much. And that you can right away see the vast space which can accommodate more :D. Sana we can get rid of those old and tired looking buildings or better yet renovate them. ;)

oo nga. madami pa mga building specially sa downtown dangerous na jud gamiton ug puy an ginagamit parin hanggang ngayon. meron namang mga buildings ngayon sa davao nirerepaint, dinidemolish and put up another building, ang iba renovation. inaantay ko yung city govt hotel na nasa claveria.
