juniordiscovery July 5th, 2010, 07:36 PM Davao merges tourism, investment offices
Written by Manuel T. Cayon / Reporter
Monday, 05 July 2010 19:51
DAVAO CITY—This city’s Mayor Sara Duterte has ordered the merger of the city tourism and investment-promotion center offices in a move to make tourism a major source of income for the city’s barangays and reduce their dependence on the city government’s coffers.
Jason Magnaye, former Mindanao chief of an Australian economic enterprise project and a former executive director of the Mindanao Business Council (MinBC), was appointed chief of the merged office.
Davao City is a more than P175-billion economy.
Duterte identified tourism as her priority economic project during her campaign.
The city has been enjoying a steady sharp growth in real-estate investments, with housing and property development contributing 80 percent of investments in the city.
She said the thrust in tourism would be providing opportunity to those barangays hosting favorite tourist destinations—from the Philippine Eagle conservation camp in Malagos, Calinan, the Crocodile Park along Diversion Road, and the resorts and downtown shopping centers—to build up on their strengths and generate income for themselves.
“We need to provide livelihood opportunities and spread the capability to earn so that barangay residents do not rely entirely on the support of the city government,” she said.
In merging the two offices, Duterte said, “We want the investment promotion to include tourism and make it a big part of the entire investment promotion effort.”
The potential of tourism was shown in the sharp increase in arrival of visitors to the city and the rest of the Davao region. Data from the Department of Tourism furnished to the Davao City Investment and Promotion Center (DCIPC) showed that there were 700,000 visitors in 2008, a multiple increase from 100,000 in 2002.
Roberto Teo, who had been in the DCIPC helm for most of the decade, said the increased log in visitors’ arrival was due to the attraction of the city as the preferred destinations for Lakbay Aral.
The City Tourism Office said it receives visitors every week from as far as Northern Luzon.
The city has also become a favorite site of national conventions and conferences.
“These growth indicators could have been much higher if we can persuade and assure visitors and investors that Davao City is far from the areas of conflict and we are, in fact, the safest place for people to reside and invest,” Teo said.
Business and tourism leaders here said the intermittent fighting in the central and southwestern part of Mindanao continues to drag down the name of the city in terms of security, although the city of 1.3 million residents has been building up a reputation of being actually the safest place to reside due mainly to the hands-on supervision of former mayor Rodrigo Duterte, the current mayor’s father.
Last year investment experienced its highest growth in a decade, reaching P5.099 billion. Teo said the property sector was expected to carry the bulk of the investments coming to the city.
Teo said, though, the projected steady growth especially in the property sector could still be manageable for a city starting to feel the pinch of population in-migration, garbage and flooding management, and traffic congestion gradually becoming a conspicuous problem.
Teo said there is the need to improve the drainage system. Although a major rehabilitation was ongoing, he said the small budget allocated to the project has made the repairs and improvement effort only remedial.
He also said the road networks and garbage remained manageable, but traffic gridlock has continued to take place.
On garbage management, the city has prided itself with the reputation of being one of the cleanest in the country, but the piling of garbage in the subdivisions is becoming the object of complaint by residents.

i read such news in the late 90s (tabloid lang)... actually accdg. to that article, the new airport would have a complex of hotels ... not only "just-just hotels" but five star hotels..... one hotel name mentioned which i can't forget is sheraton ... that's why i presume that it's going to be a sheraton davao airport hotel.... ANGABE OHNE GEWÄHR !!!!
i guess Sheraton was really interested more than any other internationally known hotels , i really remember there was a plan to build a hotel inside the Davao International Airport (you could still see the excavation).

Di ko rin maintindihan, but if I analyze the explanation given to me sa pikas thread, its the only tangible thing nga pwede nila ikahambug as they agonize in envy over the current (marco polo, landco etc) and upcoming (abreeza, sm lanang, that u/c 12 storey hotel) projects that Davao has.
na if i change mo ang keywords from SB to Marco Polo, Landco, DIA, Abreeza etc explains ngano ahat kaayo ang uban nila to have something to brag about..panakip butas sa years na nangagalaiti sa inggit sa Davao for having Mindanao's tallest buildings, best infrastructure and basically being the most progressive city in the island  So any change na ma remedy ang ka-ibog, I grab dayon (in this case SB)
I can now imagine the pain this guy is feeling everytime we post pictures of Abreeza's construction progress..How long na gani ang Marco Polo? 12 years? I can imagine 12 years na syang nagtan-aw sa Marco Polo and wishing balang araw magkakaganyan din kami..

We should have a unified 'progress chart' para ma-monitor na ang kalambuan sa Mindanao.

Its not all about the coffee man siguro. I think, SB is a more popular brand than GJ. And being an international brand, and for a place to be considered as a good location for business, it says something about the place. Parang Marco Polo lang ba, nauna ang Davao. Ibig sabihin, mas maganda ang business climate ng Davao nung late 90's kumpara sa ibang cities(Pero dinagko na gyud kung hotel ang pag-uusapan)
Pero kung sa inggit, I don't think we Davaoenos should feel that way. Naa man kaha itukod sa Abreeza?:)

makes sense doesnt it? and how much more kaha karon nga after pila ka years nilag sige ingon nga ka insecure-an sila its still the other way around (with Davao's current construction boom) and not much has materialized on their side as much as they have hoped for.. Nga in the last 2 years we have seen the likes of Pinnacle Place, the condo complexes, Ayala and SM malls and now the 12 storey sheraton hotel, IMAX by next year at SM Davao tapos from the other camp not much ra gihapoy ikapakita ug igo ra sa sulti.
In 5 years muapas mi! We will have this, we will have that and you will die of envy!!! (like how we have suffered the past years)

Davao Port welcomes 15 new foreign maiden calls
Davao City (21 June) -- In its bid to advance international trade, the Sasa Baseport (also known as Davao Port) received 15 new ships of foreign registry and one Philippine-registered vessel for the past five months.
"We are very pleased about the level of confidence that the international shipping industry and the maritime community in general have bestowed in our port," Port District Manager Abdussabor Sawadjaan earlier expressed on the positive turnout of Davao Port's foreign shipcalls.

Underemployed. Underemployed persons include all employed persons who expressed the desire to have additional hours of work in their present job or an additional job, or to have a new job with longer working hours. Visibly underemployed persons are those who work for less than 40 hours during the reference period and want additional hours of work.

though i have no idea of their minimum wage but i can't imagine how they survive life on a daily basis. and how is the purchachsing power of the take home pay? especially those with family. it looks like less than 40 hours if that is fortnoghtly, is below subsistence level. cant afford bare necessity that will last until the next pay. very sad

Duterte working on free sight, hearing check-ups for kids
Tuesday, July 6, 2010
ARRANGEMENTS with a medical group to conduct sight and hearing check-ups on elementary school children here were already made, said Davao City Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte Tuesday.
Duterte, in earlier interview, said he wishes to create a program focusing on the health of children, particularly on their sight and hearing.
Duterte said it is "impossible" that a class of 30 students would have no students with problems on their hearing and sight.
"I have talked to doctors and they have agreed to help us out. Most of the doctors I approached were willing," Duterte said.
Duterte lamented how he "was not as vigilant in protecting children's health" before.
"I'll focus on sa bata, the health of the children. It never dawned on me. I was also not at par in vigilance (to my child's health)" he said.
He then shared how he found out his daughter, Kitty, has been suffering from blurry sight for a long time.
"Ang anak ko kasi palaging nadadapa. Pinapagalitan ko minsan. Nanay niya sabi maybe it's because she’s flat-footed or lampa, but one day sabi niya, we were riding, bakit yung 'O' broken. Sabi ko patingin na. Ako myopic ako eh, I cannot see sa malayo. When she was examined, she was almost 100. Kaya di nakakakita sa malayo," he said.
Duterte also said children perhaps do not perform well in school without their teachers and parents knowing that it could be because they have poor eyesight or hearing. (Jade C. Zaldivar)

davaob4now July 7th, 2010, 01:53 AM Davao mayor approves sex education
DAVAO City Mayor Sara Duterte said Tuesday that "sex education would have been good, had it been implemented."
She added she will not hesitate to initiate such in schools as long as schools will allow.
Updates on President Benigno Aquino III's presidency
Duterte said she supports the Department of Education's (Deped) plan, formerly under Education secretary Mona Valisno, to incorporate sex education or the Adolescent Reproductive Health Care module.
Asked whether the local government has the capacity to teach reproductive health in schools, Duterte concurred.
"Musugot ko. Dili nako masulti nga pwede nato isulod sa curriculum pero through sa CSSDO, kung muingon ang teachers, pwede ta musulod sa skwelahan (I would approve of it. I cannot say is we could integrate this into the curriculum as DepEd planned but we can do that through the City Social Services and Development Office, we can enter schools)," Duterte said, insisting that it will all depend on the schools as the city cannot insist on it.( Jade C. davaob4now July 7th, 2010, 02:00 AM Duterte wants rebels to help in log ban
DAVAO City Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte wants a total logging ban in the city's hinterlands and is calling for the New People's Army (NPA) to help.
Duterte is urging the NPA to scare those who continue to cut trees in the remaining forests of the city.
Updates on President Benigno Aquino III's presidency
"Hindi tayo nagkulang (sa pag-protect) ng environment dito sa siyudad ng Dabaw (here in Davao City). Nobody's allowed to cut trees, there's no permit approved anymore, but the problem is there are illegal logging done somewhere in Marilog and Paquibato," Duterte said in an interview after the 16th City Council's first session.
"I think if we could have the cooperation of the NPA medyo mas madali matapos ito (It will be a lot easier). Yes, I am calling for their cooperation," he said.
Duterte said these illegal loggers, to his knowledge, answer to financiers located in Panacan, Agdao, and Panabo City.
"Karamihan diyan yang mga bukot-bukot pud. Parang guerilla-style, palusot lusot, in and out sa Paquibato (Most of these illegal loggers are small operators who go, guerilla style, in and out of Paquibato)," he said.
Duterte, however, said that he would prefer the rebels to just warn off the illegal loggers.
"Or they can confiscate, cease, yung tools, dalhin lang nila," Duterte said.
Watershed Code
Meanwhile, Duterte said he expects a strong opposition from the executive department headed by City Mayor Sara Duterte, on his plan to amend the Watershed Code.
Tamugan River, declared as a protected area in the said code, has long been eyed by utility firms, Davao City Water District (DCWD) and Hedcor Inc. (Hedcor), which both want to construct infrastructure there, for their respective projects of Surface Water Development Plan and Hydropower plants.
Vice Mayor Duterte stands for amendment while Mayor Duterte has objected to any amendment.
"What we intend to do is for us to listen to experts, scientists, people who have the expertise so that they can educate us (on whether) nothing will happen to the resources or it would be detrimental. (If that's so) then maybe we can just withdraw our plans," Duterte said. (Jade C. Zaldivar)

liquidcrew July 7th, 2010, 04:21 AM Coconut sugar maker prepares for operation
DAVAO CITY -- A manufacturer of coco sugar here is talking with millers and farmers in Sta. Cruz town, Davao del Sur, in a bid to ensure a steady supply of raw material -- mainly coconut shells -- as construction of its P2-billion processing plant is under way.
The plant is expected to be completed in January next year.
Meant for export
Edwin A. Derla Sr., CJ Toyota Tshusho Philippines Inc. manager, said the firm is rushing the plant to be able to provide an initial delivery of at least 1,200 metric tons of coco sugar early next year to clients in Japan, Korea and China.
"We are talking with everybody... Even the farmers can sell to us directly through their cooperatives," he said.
CJ Toyota Tshusho Philippines is a tie-up of Korean firm CJ and Binggrae Co., Japanese firm Toyota Tsusho, and local Anflo Management and Investment Corp. one of the country’s biggest banana exporters.
Jyll Mahri A. Fernandez, human resources supervisor, said the company will produce xylose, which is derived from coconut shells and corn cobs.
It is the raw material for xylitol, the additive used in confectioneries, sweeteners and chewing gum.
‘Spirit of the shell’
She said the company will buy coconut shells, from which xylose will be extracted.
"There’s no other way to describe it, but we are going to extract the ‘Spirit of the shell’," she said.
The company’s planned four-storey facility is designed to have a maximum production capacity of 43 metric tons of xylose a day, or about 15,000 metric tons a year.
Edwin A. Ote, Jose Rizal village chief, said Sta. Cruz is primarily a coconut-producing town.
He said his village alone can supply 100 tons of coconut shells to the company each month.
They have yet to discuss with company executives the buying price and the terms of delivery in order to ensure the farmers concerned, majority of whom belong to the Bagobo-Tagabawa tribe, will benefit.
CJ Toyota Tsusho had its groundbreaking ceremony last February.
Mr. Derla hopes the weather will cooperate so the company can finish the manufacturing plant on time.
"We hope it will not be too rainy; that would delay the construction," he said. -- JBE

By Jade C. Zaldivar
DAVAO City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte disclosed the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) has expressed willingness to finance infrastructure projects of the city.
Duterte said she met with DBP heads on Thursday as the latter paid a courtesy call to her at Grand Men Seng Hotel.
"Wala silay gisulting specific nga project. Nagsulti lang sila nga willing sila for financing specifically for Davao City (They did not say any specific projects. They said they are willing to finance specifically for the city)" Duterte said in an interview Saturday.
DBP, however, also presented to Duterte its project with the National Government in constructing modernized ports.
"Ang gipakita nila sa akoa katong RoRo. (They presented to me the Roll On, Roll Off project) It was originally their project, which they proposed to the national government. This was implemented by President Arroyo during her time," Duterte said.
Duterte also said DBP offered to become the depository bank of the city.
"They said if we are interested they can also be the depository bank of the City Government of Davao, but right now our depository bank is Landbank (of the Philippines). Basta and DBP nagingon gyud sila nga willing sila magpahiram ug willing sila magnegotiate sa interest and terms (But the DBP said they are willing to lend us money and they are willing to negotiate with us on the interest and terms)” she said.
Asked if she would arrange the government and DBP to work on infrastructure projects, Duterte said she would prioritize the creation of a government center.
“There are other important infrastructures that I could say that’s also important such as creating highways. Padakon nato ang highways pasulod and i-link nato ang atoang mga naglainlaing barangays para pas atoang sulod ug gawas. Daghan daghan pa ang pwedeng buhaton. (We’ll expand our highways going inside the city and we’ll link our barangays so it's easier to navigate. There’s more to do in terms of infrastructure)," Duterte said.

By Keith Bacongco | Wednesday| July 7, 2010 | Filed under: Agriculture, Around Mindanao, Business, Top Stories
DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/6 July) – A family-owned farm company here is pushing for backyard livestock farming among small farmers and even white-collar workers.
In a news conference here, Roberto Puentespina, director of the family-owned Puentespina Farms Company at Malagos District here, said
that many of the farmers and even non-farmers may have missed the opportunity of starting up even a small livestock farm given that
Davao region is an agricultural area.
Puentespina, a veterinarian by profession, said even white-collar workers can start in their own backyards, especially those residing in subdivisions and also those who already have farms in the outskirts of the city.
All they need, he said, is plenty of fresh grass to feed the goats or cows to be able to produce fresh milk. “This is what some of us may have overlooked. We have vast idle grasslands that can be utilized to feed our livestock, the fresh grass is already a big capital,” he pointed out.

Puentespina said a dairy goat needs five kilos of fresh grass daily to produce a liter of fresh milk.
This farming technology, he said, is among the topics that will be shared in a two-day event at Malagos Garden Resort on August 7 to 8. On the first day, dubbed the Malagos Farm Fair, will also feature seminars on cheese in the Philippines, renewable energy application in the farm, and creating micro habitats.
On the first day also, there will be food tasting, farm games such as fish catching, pig catching, palo sebo, “dunk me” and adventure race games.
“Many of the kids now are into electronic games. They don’t know or already forgot these farm games. So at Malagos Garden Resort, we will show it to them,” said Puentespina.
The following day, August 8, there will be seminars on raising organic chicken and pig, fresh water fish farming and cacao farming.
This two-day event costs P250 per day but there will be additional P500 for the wine and cheese appreciation sessions.
Puentespina added that they are targeting local tourists and local farmers to join the event since they will be selling some of their
livestock animal.
He said that local livestock farmers in Malagos and other parts of Calinan will be invited to showcase their farm animals during the event, Puentespina said.
“I will go around and ask them whatever available livestock they have and sell them during the two-day event,” he said, adding that
Puentespina Farms will also sell different varieties of livestock. “We will start from our neighborhoods first; then, we will invite other
livestock farmers from Bukidnon, the Davao provinces, North Cotabato and those from Luzon and the Visayas.”
Among the livestock that will be sold are Anglo Nobian goats and Holstein-Sahiwal cows, both common sources of dairy milk. The
organizers will be also selling peacocks, ornamental chickens and ostriches.
Puentespina said that the participants of the two-day event will have the opportunity to observe the milking process of goats.
“This is our way of sharing our knowledge to the people, to show them how the milking process is done. But our main point here is to
encourage the people to raise even just a pair of these milking goats for their own consumption at home,” said Puentespina.
“As a farmer, we would like to share to other people the benefits of having a small farm as a lifestyle weekend activity. After a stressful week day, they should come to their farm on weekends to relax and at the same time enjoy the benefits of having a few farm animals,” he
told MindaNews. (Keith Bacongco / MindaNews)

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/6 July) — There should be an improvement to the kind of services that the Davao City officials are rendering to the
public.
This was Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio’s order to the newly-appointed department heads during a meeting following her first flag raising ceremony as the city’s chief executive.
“How you serve the public speaks of how the local government performs,” Duterte-Carpio told the office chiefs.
“When it comes to work, the government officials and employees should follow my command. They should be guided with my direction,” said Duterte-Carpio, referring to her platform of governance.
On her inaugural speech, Duterte-Carpio slammed some government employees for the various complaints she received on her desk when she was still a vice mayor.
“I’m exasperated of hearing complaints about our service. In the coming days, we should be on the receiving end of appreciation,” she said. “That can only be forthcoming if there is excellence in our performance.”
The first one month of her administration, according Duterte-Carpio, will focus on the performance of close to 30 offices in City Hall. The mayor urged the department heads to immediately assess the performance of their respective offices and make recommendations by the end of the month.
“They would report and make recommendations with regards to their respective offices’ strength and weaknesses,” she told reporters after the meeting.
However, initial assessment needs to be submitted to the mayor on July 15.
In the meeting, Duterte-Carpio formally announced the appointment of Lawyer Zuleika Lopez as the new city administrator, as well as of the other heads of offices.
Former Mindanao Business Council executive director Jason Magnaye was named chief of the City Investment and Promotion Center while Lawyer Osmundo Villanueva and Roberto Alabado will head the City Legal Office and City Planning and Development Office.
Former City Information Officer Alex Roldan will be replaced by Giovanni Aportadera, former chief of the City Tourism Office. (Rico Biliran / MindaNews)

juniordiscovery July 7th, 2010, 06:44 PM Coconut sugar maker prepares for operation
-- JBE

VICE Mayor Rodrigo Duterte expressed support to the city's Anti-Smoking Task Force (ASTF) target of 100 percent smoke-free establishments.
ASTF co-chair Dr. Domilyn Villariez in earlier statement said she is drafting a resolution that will totally prohibit smoking in all establishments here, and would stop allowing the construction of smoking rooms inside establishments.
Duterte on Tuesday agreed to the ASTF's decision, saying he believes having a smoking room inside establishments would still harm the people's health.
"There would still be a leak somewhere (wherein the) nicotine can go inside and around the building," Duterte said in an interview.
"If (we) really want to protect everybody there inside the establishment then (we) have to totally ban smoking inside the building or use of a smoking area," Duterte said.
Villareiz said earlier they are basing the resolution on World Health Organization's Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) as the country is among the signatories of that treaty.
"The Philippines, being one of the 168-member party signatory to the treaty, should comply to the said international agreement," Villareiz added.
The local ordinance will amend provisions of the current Anti-Smoking Ordinance that prohibits smoking in public areas and requires permits for private establishments to be able to create smoking rooms.
Villareiz said the ASTF will also be pushing for the prohibition of smoking in private establishments. (JCZ)

ANOTHER two big business process outsourcing companies are considering plans of expanding in the city, said Erriberto P. Barriga Jr., president of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Davao.
In the weekly Club 888 at the Marco Polo Hotel, Barriga said the companies are planning to put up software and hardware development facilities. “The two Manila-based firms should however remain unnamed until the deal is closed,” he said.
Barriga said the companies already laid out their plans even to Mayor Sara Z. Duterte-Carpio who joined industry leaders in the visit to Cebu City last month.
Records of the organization showed that as of May, the industry already employed about 10,000 and that the number has continued to grow.
In a TIMES report earlier as of May, there were three US-based information and technology (IT) companies that were planning to expand their businesses in the city. One of the companies even commissioned a group to conduct a feasibility study.
The group that conducted the study concluded that the city is safe as an investment area and it has sufficient human resources pool.

dinabaw July 8th, 2010, 06:47 AM Open house at Malagos Farm
BY JUDY QUIROS
Mark the dates August 7 and 8 in your calendars: these are exciting days of fun and learning for the entire family.
The vast 30-hectare farm of the Puentespina family in Malagos, where the popular Malagos Garden Resort also sits, will hold an open house on August 7 and 8 to signal the start of agriculture tourism, the first not just in Mindanao but in the entire country.
Speaking to reporters at the Davao City Business Forum last Tuesday at SM City Davao, Malagos Garden Resort director Dr. Roberto “Bo” Puentespina said the Puentespina family, known for flowers, has diversified into raising dairy goats, cows, sheep, cocks, horses, peacocks, pheasants, ostriches, fancy chickens, dogs, and ornamental birds.
The family is also into cheese making and to cacao farming.
The Malagos Farm Fair was conceptualized as the family’s bid to share their bounty and at the same time to push agriculture tourism.
“What better way of sharing this bounty fulfillment than an open house? We have decided to open our farms and show interested would-be farmers what it takes to have a cacao farm, a dairy goat and cow operation, the organic fertilizer and vermiculture project,” Puentespina said.
He said the family hopes the open house will be regular tourism event in which neighbor farmers can showcase and sell their products, be they animals, vegetables, fruits, delicacies, and crafts.
He said the family envisions the Malagos Farm Fair to become an alternative destination for weekend family bonding and a wellspring of ideas and future farmers.
“The fair will rekindle every family’s desire to go back to the farm and live a simple life,” he added.
With an entrance fee of P250 per person, a guest is entitled to a lunch buffet of roast beef, barbecue, and a drink. The whole family can also enjoy a hay ride on board a farm truck for a tour of the entire farm.
The two-day fair will be both learning and fun. Aside from the traditional adventure race games such as pig and fish catching, palo sebo, and other farm games, it will also showcase seminars on industry topics like Cheese in the Philippines, renewable energy application in the farm, creating micro habitats, raising organic chickens and pigs, fresh water fish farming, craft making sessions, and cacao farming.
Other activities will also be highlighted such as wine and cheese appreciation and chocolate shop talk.
Mars Inc. will host the Chocolate Shop Talk while the other seminars will be hosted by Philippine Airlines to promote travel destinations, B-MEG, Coca Cola, and Habagat to organize the farm and adventure games, and Purefoods with its guest chef for a cooking demo for kids.
Smart Telecom and DC Tech will showcase communications technology while Hydrock Wells will talk about water resources that Davao City is well known for.
In the afternoon session, Swiss Deli with Malagos Farmhouse and Waling Flowers will host the wine and cheese appreciation. San Miguel Beer will provide the evening band entertainment.
Puentespina said the fair organizers are targeting the agriculture entrepreneurs for the seminars, followed by family, groups, and students.
The family tour and fun will be completed by riding to nearby Philippine Eagle Foundation Center.

Sa Japan, every train station naa pud sila ani, with infos sa mga events sa ilang lugar, maps, places to go, where to eat/stay...

True. We do have information centers such as the local tourism office and the DOT in Landco. The only problem is, not most tourists know this.
My suggestion is to make these information booths or centers accessible - probably put up one within each major malls in the city. I'm not talking about pricey travel agencies within the malls, we already have that, but plain information booth that provides free info on how to, where to, and when to visit these nice destinations in the city.
And probably make the city's info more accessible to the tourists. I'm not sure if this is feasible but why not put three to five computer kiosks at the arrival area with this noticeable signage "new to davao?" tapos when they visit the site, they can access information about the city like places to go and stuff. And to avoid unnecessary websurf, ofcourse nakablock ang access sa other sites and they can only visit www.davaotourism.com or if the local tourism can come up with a virtual tour app that they can install dun. Then for non techy travellers, let's put up a noticeable bulletin board with info as well.
I think meron tayong place sa DIA now with flyers and brochures but the problem is, if ur new to Davao, u wouldnt notice it.
Or instead of seeing those mangosteen juice ads and other herbal posters at the arrival area, probably our city can atleast get one space where we can post info for those newbies in the city.
Of course, it shouldnt be limited sa airport lang, sa seaport din and sa bus terminals.
These are just simple suggestions but I think if the concern is "d alam ng tourists kung san pumunta" such efforts may probably make the info very much accessible to them.
Another challenge cguro is how to bring most of the tourists to our city. It is interesting to note that although it is expensive to visit the city, marami pa rin pumupunta sa city. But we cant rise to the position of atleast being number one or two - I personally believe na one of the reasons is the cost to visit our city. I know that the issue of infrastructure had been raised in the past, but if that's the case, why is Bohol more popular (number of visitors-wise)?
One cant deny the fact that most of the travelers came from Metro Manila, from here, it is more expensive pa to fly to Davao than visit Singapore or even HK. However, you can get lower fares going to popular destinations such as Bohol, Cebu, and even Boracay.
Of course we cant change the fact na mahal tlga ang fare papunta satin. Cguro make it value driven. Yes, mahal but there should be something in our city that will entice visitors to visit our city inspite of the cost.
I am not saying that nangulelat tayo sa visitors. Yes. We are indeed one of those on top...top 5 perhaps. The profile of our visitors are businessmen, those attending conventions, lakbay aral, and those who can afford.
But I think it is also time to tap the average market especially during these trying times companies are looking at their budgets and those who spend are average individuals like you and me. How can we attract them?
We cant brag our wakeboarding, ziplines, our eco adventure thingy, and stuff....Camsur and nearby destinations such as tagaytay have that. D ko rin alam if papano and ano but i think that's the challenge, come up with something new which can only be found in the city. Kadayawan is one, but it's seasonal, during August only. We have our pristine beaches, but all around the country, there areas with pristine beaches too...Hmmmmm I think what made ours better is that you can go to the beach 365 days a year, unlike with those in the Visayas and here in Luzon which are normally being visited by typhoons. But do people know that? Kaya lang, with global warming, ganun pa rin ba satin jan sa Davao these days? I mean, bumabagyo man dito sa Manila or sa Visayas yet ok pa rin weather natin jan?
We're always bannering our highlands to islands, well that's not limited to the Davao only. What else do we have in Davao that inspite of the higher cost to visit the city, average travelers would still choose to visit the place and wouldnt mind the cost coz it's worth it?
tj_brewed July 8th, 2010, 09:49 AM 9lgbvRnL87M
This is one of my fave kadayawan vids. If only we can make everyday as a Kadayawan day in the city and will mark August as its culmination. :D Why not? Kadayawan, a celebration of giving thanks for the blessings and harvests. The only sad thing is that, some of our harvest and produce are now being marketed expensively in public markets and fruit stalls - cant blame them though as they just want to take advantage of the visitors.

By MICK M. BASA
July 8, 2010, 3:26pm
Manila Bulletin (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/265834/davao-city-considering-total-smoke-ban-establishments)
DAVAO CITY – It may soon be virtually illegal for anyone in this city to smoke inside establishments as legislators are poised to introduce an ordinance totally eradicating smoking areas here.
Vice Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte said the outdated ordinance introduced in 2002 would require an amendment to turn all establishments into zones where smoking would be banned completely.
“How can we protect our citizens who chose not to smoke but could still breathe what is being exhaled by smokers inside buildings?” Vice Mayor Duterte said in an interview with reporters.
The Anti-Smoking Task Force (ASTF) earlier told the Manila Bulletin that it intends to lobby legislators to amend the outdated but effective ordinance that has been adopted by some local government units in the country.
Dr. Domilyn C. Villareiz, ASTF chief, particularly wanted to add a provision that would remove smoking areas inside buildings and placed them outside the buildings instead.
An ideal designated smoking area would look like a compact glass room with an exhaust fan and no chairs, making smoking an uninviting vice for anyone who would like to do it here.
“But it is better than having smoke-filled restaurants and bars or having no designated area at all,” said Hyangelo Hao, an erstwhile resident of Davao who now lives in Pasig City.

(REUTERS) - Big-screen movie company IMAX Corp (IMX.TO) signed a deal with Philippine mall operator SM Prime Holdings Corp (SMPH.PS) to install five digital IMAX theatres in the country.
The three theatres expected to be installed in 2011 and two in 2012 take the total number of IMAX system deals announced year-to-date to 89, compared with 35 in 2009.
"The IMAX theatres serve as a great source of incremental revenue for our business, and we're seeing a growing demand for the IMAX brand as more big Hollywood movies are released in the format," SM Prime's President Hans Sy said in a statement.
The movie operator also said its IMAX DMR (digital re-mastering technology) gross box office worldwide sales rose about 37 percent in the second quarter to about $115 million, compared with a year ago.
Imax shares were up 4 percent at C$13.43 Wednesday morning on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

Imax to install 5 more screens in Philippines
By The Associated Press
Big movie screen company Imax Corp. said Wednesday it had reached an agreement to install five more digital projection systems in shopping malls in five cities in the Philippines.
The malls, operated by SM Prime Holdings, are in Las Pinas City, Fort Bonifacio, Davao City, Angeles City and Manila.
The deal follows the success of SM's two existing Imax theaters in Manila and Quezon. SM's current Imax facility in Manila has been the highest grossing screen in the country since it opened.
Three of the theater systems will be installed in 2011 and two in 2012.
Under a previous deal, SM will also open another Imax location in Cebu this month in time for the release of "Inception," starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
Imax said it has announced deals for 89 location installations this year, compared to 35 in all of 2009.
Imax shares were up 89 cents, or 7.3 percent, to $13.14 in midday trading Wednesday.
