All tribes find peace in Davao
Friday, September 10, 2010
A REPRESENTATIVE of a group working for peace among the tri-people of Mindanao described Davao City as the "most livable city for Muslims and Indigenous Peoples."
Aksyon Mindanao national spokesperson lawyer John Christopher Mahamud said the City Government has maintained through the years in keeping its plans and programs inclusive and conscious of the concerns from Muslim, Christians, and lumad residents.
"Davao City has established itself na yung mga tao mismo have learned to accept each other. Muslims, Christians and the indigenous people here live peacefully together. I think Davao City is the most livable urban city for Muslims and indigenous peoples," Mahamud said in an interview Friday at Purok 26-A, Barangay 76-A, Bucana where the organization chose to celebrate the Eid'l Fit'r with its residents.
Mahamud said although there are a lot of Muslims in urban cities such as Manila, it was only Davao that has the appointed deputy mayors for each major tribe herein.
"Compared to other local government, Davao City has a good response to its constituents by appointing deputy mayors who represent their tribes, both Muslim and indigenous. It only shows that the local government recognizes its constituents and residents and makes them better heard kung yung mga concerns nga mga tao," Mahamud said.
He also reacted to the controversial "2010 International Burn a Quran Day," which is set for Saturday.
The controversy started when pastor Terry Jones of the non-denominational Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Florida, United States planned to burn copies of the Qur'an during the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks, which he called "International Burn a Koran Day."
The plan was widely condemned by politicians and religious groups all over the world.
The Qur'an is the central religious text of Islam. Muslims believe the Qur'an to be the verbal book of divine guidance and direction for mankind. Muslims also consider the original Arabic verbal text to be the final revelation of God.
"If may mangyayari mang ganyan, we would not generalize the Christians. I think this would be a chance for other Christians in the world to express their sympathy to us. Isa pa, Muslims memorize the Qu'ran, if they would burn it, we have the Quran in our hearts," Mahamud said.
In celebration of the Eid'l Fit'r at Purok 26-A, prayers from Muslim, Christian, and lumads were held. Solidarity messages were shared by Imam Abdul Rauf Dicasaran from the Maranao Tribe, Moro National Liberation Front city state chair Rolando Olamit, among others.
Barangay 76-A Kagawad Roselia Panao said out of 100,000 residents of their barangay, some 15,000 are Muslims, five to eight thousand are lumads, while the majority are Christians.
"Malinawon man diri ang mga tao. Di man maiwasan nga naay kagubot usaya pero gwapo ang ginapakita nga pinaghiusa diri. (The people here live peacefully. Although certain misunderstandings can't be avoided, the people show solidarity here)," Panao said.
Mahamud said Aksyon Mindanao chose to celebrate the Eid'l Fit'r in Purok 26-A as Panao is among their most active members. (JCZ)

Mayor: I need explanation, not apology
Wednesday, September 8, 2010
DAVAO CITY -- Mayor Sara Duterte on Wednesday said she did not want an apology from the contractor of the Abreeza Mall but an explanation.
Duterte was reacting to the letter of apology received on Sunday by the City Mayor's Office from DDT Konstract, Inc. four hours after the 12 noon deadline.
Post your reaction to the Manila hostage crisis
"It's more than 24 hours, too late. I did not ask for an apology. I asked for an explanation," Duterte said on why the policemen were refused entry.
In the letter, signed by DDT Konstract Inc. president Danilo Tamayo, the contractor apologized to the mayor and said they are still completing their own investigation. They also hope to submit their findings within the week.
Duterte admitted she was displeased. She said the letter would not affect the investigation but the questions on the cause of the collapse and the refusal for the authorities to enter the scene, remain.
The mayor said cases were already filed.
Obstruction of justice charges were filed by the Sta. Ana police on Tuesday afternoon against security guard Florencio de Vera and safety officer Ivan Lagrata.
De Vera and Lagrata refused policemen and rescue teams who responded the accident were not allowed to enter the construction site.
Formworks collapsed in the roof deck of a portion of Robinsons building inside Abreeza Mall project at around 6:40 a.m. Saturday, resulting to the death of one and injury of four construction workers. (Jade C. Zaldivar)

You can see that chinatown is improving and getting ready for the global challenge. It is evident with the rise of Pinnacle and other buildings in the area.

Budots September 11th, 2010, 01:49 PM Samal Island
April 12, 2010 By John 10 Comments
I was very lucky to have recently revisited the Island of Samal, just a short boat ride away from Davao City, in Mindanao.
I have been there a few times before, but this time I was taken by car along bumpy roads, big hills, and along beautiful coastal views to a beautiful place on Earth, its so amazing that it took my breath away. Its a secret of Samal.
Beaches of the finest sands, with turquoise blue waters, with sound of local children playing. The whole thing is enclosed in a cove, and the palm trees, and the sound of the water, made me think I was indeed in paradise.
Looking around at the quaint buildings and fishing boats, I was astonished to notice how clean and well kept the place was, there was no loud music, no Starbucks, no hot-dogs, just locals enjoying what nature had given them.
http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/5251/samalapril.jpg (http://img412.imageshack.us/i/samalapril.jpg/)
Its so unspoiled, and so much like a journey into the past, that I have decided not to release full details to its exact location, simply to say these people were so happy to say hi, and the Barangay captain was relaxed, he talked about his pure love of his place, and his people, and then returned to the court to continue watching the Basketball by the locals.
And despite the lack of money, these people were just bound with happiness.
I will be returning soon, as I have discovered very local accommodation, that I can look out to the sea, and watch the locals, and recharge my battery, and feel good to be alive.

City to host green development confab
Saturday, September 11, 2010
IN RECOGNITION of housing developers' role to the future of environment preservation, a confab on green development is set in Davao City to be headed by the Chamber of Real Estate Building Associations Inc. (Creba), in cooperation with government agencies.
Creba-Davao Chapter president Carlos Vargas said it has been recognized by developers "that applying green practices in development would mean saving the environment."
"To be discussed in the conference would be new approaches to green technology and sustainability in the real estate development. When developers themselves apply this from the start, then it would make a lot of difference and affecting a lot of households," Vargas said in an interview last week.
"Sa ngayon, medyo mahal pang mag-totally adopt to green architecture and buildings that are environmentally friendly because wala pang murang mga materials na available. For example, dito sa Pilipinas, kahoy pa ang ginagamit natin instead of steel. Pero kung iisipin, mas tatagal naman yung building kung ganoon and it would have lesser impact to the environment," Vargas said.
He also noted that green architecture showcases practices of having bigger windows, which would mean lesser electricity for lighting.
"Our keynote speaker is Architect Felino Palafox Jr. who has been recognized as the region's number 1 architect and Manila's foremost urban planner," he said.
The conference dubbed "1st Mindanao Real Estate and Housing Conference" will be held at the SM Event Center in Davao City on October 6, with the theme "Challenges of Global Warning on the Real Estate Industry. Green Development our contribution to our future."
The event is co-hosted by Department of Interior and Local Government, Housing and Land Use Regulatory Board, Environment Management Bureau, Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP), the Council Committee on Environment and Committee on Committee on Housing.
Vargas said among the things to be discussed are: planning on sustainable communities; best practices: real estate developer, local government units, alternative source of energy; and DBP Green Financing for LGUs and private developers.
"We will also be having an awarding of developers, corporations, [local government units] and individuals whose practices have significantly contributed to reduce the harmful effects of climate change. This is called the 'Green is Gold' Award. Also, we'll be giving tokens and distributions of certificates by Creba National," Vargas said. (Jade C. Zaldivar)

IMO, project of this proportion would take quite sometime pa before construction starts. Una nyan marketing pa, then preselling - as what I mentioned w/ my other posts, preselling will take 2 to 3 years, then preconstruction stage, then construction na tlga. Nung minamarket namin ang Ultima Residences in Fuente sa Cebu, it took years too before constructions commenced. And even here sa Robinsons Land, like yung recent project na Sapphire, nasa preselling stage pa sya so in the next 2 to 3 yrs puro preselling pa or hanap ng clients. Then after that, construction. Sa tingin ko, aabot pa ng 3 to 5 yrs before the entire project will be completed. Typical construction span ng mga condos not only in Metro Manila but also in Cebu too.

I hope they will use and purchase more imed pumps/IV pumps, kasi before theyre only using it sa mga special depts. like icu. It would be a good thing to uplift the already high standard of medical care theyre providing.

September 8, 2010, 7:50pm
DAVAO CITY — Davaoeños have a good reason to take pride in this city’s disaster preparedness and response program.
This developed after the city’s Central 911 Call Center proved its effectiveness following a successful response to a flooding incident in Calinan District in 2008.
The initial report set off a sequence of quick responses – an ocular evaluation of the affected area, identification of an evacuation center, and mobilization of rescue groups.
“We are proud of having organized the Central Communication and Emergency Response Center (Central 911) which is considered the finest government office for emergency service in the entire country today,” said Col. Verner Mario Monsanto, chief operating officer of this city’s Central 911.
The much lauded public service, recognized as the first in all of Asia, is poised to get even better with the support of telecommunications leader Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) and their very own Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU).
Weather monitoring and disaster alert devices have been developed by AdDU to become part of this city’s emergency response system. Funding and technical assistance were provided by Smart.
These include an automated weather station, river monitoring station, land and sea tracking devices, and personal trackers.

“Things aren’t always what they seem.” This famous line may relate to the Royal Breadhaus, Inc. after Vivian Sison bared her success story of making it big in the business.
People may have heard about the Royal Breadhaus (RBH) in the last 25 years, but any big fan of bread knows that the store is located along Torres Street corner Jacinto Extension, Davao City.
One look at it and one would think that this business establishment prefers to remain low profile or that its owner has no plan to expand. It has not changed much in all the years of its existence. Vivian, however, eventually put up branches at SM Davao--“freshly baked”--at the threshold of its supermarket and the Gourmet Bread, also at SM a few years later; at the Chimes (formerly Felcris) on Sales St., Gaisano Mall of Davao in Bajada, and at the Makro in Bangkal.
The Royal Breadhaus specializes in high-end bread products that she first sold at her brother’s Durian Hotel along J.P. Laurel St. in 1988, her first outlet.
That was her first break since 1986 when she started backyard baking of pan de sal, using the traditional brick oven, and selling them in the neighborhood through her sari-sari store at Rolling Hills, Bacaca Road.
Later, she expanded her bakery working area after she began receiving more orders. When McDonald’s opened its first branch here in 1991, the Royal Breadhaus passed the multinational fastfood’s quality standards. Since then, it became the supplier of buns to all McDonald’s outlets in Mindanao.
In time, more food chain owners asked Mrs. Sison to be their regular supplier of buns, bread sandwich, and pizza crusts. Such outlets included Kentucky Fried Chicken (Davao and General Santos City), Shakey’s, Greenwich, Bigby’s, Jack’s Ridge and Minute Burger.
“Many people may still believe that our business has not grown. Only a few have become aware that we already cater to the industrial market,” Mrs. Sison said. The RBH is also the producer of Tricel’s House of Ensaimada and Ibby’s Cakes and Pastries sold at the Gaisano Mall of Davao and SM Davao.
Secret recipe
In the beginning, Vivian would consume only about three kilos of flour a day. That was when she was still new in the game and her attraction to the bakery business was in lieu of working in an office which was not her cup of tea, so to speak. Today, she consumes a whole lot more than that for her daily production. And why not? After all, take note---her bakeshop produces up to 40,000 buns everyday!
Her bread commissary operates with 40 regular workers, and 15 contractual packers, has semi-automated machines like the 6000 pieces per hour bun line to match the speed of production. And the recipes are pre-mixed.
“I once had a baker who was pirated by another company which offered him better compensation and perks,” Vivian said. “He was eventually fired because, while he could copy the physical appearance of our products, he failed to reproduce the original taste. He came back to me asking to be rehired. I said: “No way!”
Only her family and two other trusted persons know about the pre-mixed ingredients she uses. What the workers do is merely to add water, do the kneading and baking---of course, with the help of the machines for uniform sizes and shapes.
“It’s the quality of our products and efficiency of our service that make our customers continue to patronize us. We never delay on deliveries, but sometimes unforeseeable things happen and lapses occur, but we make it a point to find a solution as soon as possible.”
“Mahal talaga ang tinapay namin kaysa sa iba (We are more expensive compared to other bakeries), because our ingredients are imported from different places, and we don’t use coloring or flavoring substitutes and our products are always complete in nutrients,” Mrs. Sison said.
But, what is really the secret of this woman who, at 55 years, still retains the glamour of youth, even as she displays humility despite her success?
“Sipag at tiyaga (Hard work and diligence). Dapat mag-aral ka talaga at alam mo ang papasukin mo. Nag-aral din ako ng baking,” she said, admitting that she seldom had enough sleep, especially during her first few years in the business.
Praying is another of her secrets of success. She hears mass with her husband at the Redemptorist Church every morning without fail. And every night, she prays the Rosary with her family.
Paying sacrifices
Like some determined people who most often than not sacrifice time for their family or personal lives, Sison did not have much time for her family in the early years of her business. But such sacrifice was not really a loss because now that the business is at its peak, it has also brought her family together more than ever.
“All my children are now into the business,” she said with a smile.
Her eldest son, Marvin, a graduate of U.P. Cebu with a degree in HRM, and took up baking course at the Asian Baking Institute, is in charge of finance. Her youngest, Emiliano, who is the operations manager, got his education from the American Institute of Baking in Manhattan, Kansas. Daughter Katrina, after taking up culinary as her second course, is in charge of the pastry line and human resources department while her husband, RJ, who also studied in a prestigious manila culinary school, acts as the company’s marketing consultant.
Vivian’s husband, Emil, has been her shock absorber of problems and her most reliable consultant.
“Naniniwala ako na sabay talaga ang Diyos sa lahat, sa work, sa pamilya. Dapat wala ring mayabang,” Vivian said even when she was still single, she had already made it a habit to hear mass everyday. “I always asked Him for guidance in all of my decisions.”
It’s been payback time for all her past sacrifices. In fact, the Royal Breadhaus, Inc. recently won the 2010 Most Outstanding Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) for small category. Other awards include a recognition for the Golden Cart Award for the highest performance in bread sales in all SM malls nationwide, and the National Shoppers Choice in 2004.
Based in Hong Kong, the AIB Food Safety Education Quality Center--Asia Pacific, to whom they yearly submit for quality assurance the buns for McDonald’s, awarded them the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point certification.
Joining Pilates, a form of exercise, twice a week, and eating her own Gourmet Bread products, that justifies her slender figure, Sison believes that business losses, if any, eventually translate to something better in the end. One ought to accept a loss as something that need not be repeated.
“If He (God) takes something from you, it means it’s not for you. But, He will replace it it with something better,” she said, nodding, to show her deep conviction.

:okay:
if that is the scale model spotted in november 2009, the project must have been conceived with a feasibility study much earlier than that time i suppose.
the delay might have been bec of wait and see mode on the outcome of local election. the incumbent mayor brought with her good vibes on the image of the city. previous council was tainted with bribery corruptions. so there. my 2 cents

MtApoStandard September 12th, 2010, 03:30 PM IMO, project of this proportion would take quite sometime pa before construction starts. Typical construction span ng mga condos not only in Metro Manila but also in Cebu too.
lets wait and see whats in store ahead. malaysian might surprise us to commence ground work at preselling stage. we dont know the financial capability of the investor. all we know is the confidence on the bullish market in the target sectors and the talented pool of aggressive sales force.

and according to previous articles posted here. Mayor sara focuses or will focus more on business and tourism.which prompted the investor of this project not to delay the posting of the tarp because they know that the mayor's agenda is favorable to them not to mention the city's readiness to such project. Now,im wondering if this has been in the news lately.no press release.biglaan lang talaga.

ECOLAND Bus Terminal or Davao City Overland Transport Terminal (DCott) posted this month an income of more than P14 million, surpassing its goal for the year.
DCott officer-in-charge Yusoph Jimlani on Monday said the terminal this year set a goal of earning P14 million but as of the first week of September, they have collected P14,600,000.
Post your reaction to the Manila hostage crisis
Jimlani attributed this to his aggressive collection of fees and taxes imposed by DCott to incoming and departing transport, porters, and vendors.
"Ang porters, mga renters ng stalls, stands, buses going out meron yan silang arkabala. DCott is the city's business enterprise rin naman which is under the City Enterprise Office under the City Administrator's Office," Jimlani said Monday after Kapihan sa SM media forum.
"I assumed office this March. So we're happy with this progress that in a few months' stay, nakuha ko na yung target ng office. I have to work because binanayaran tayo rito. May mga nagrereklamo na nga na strikto raw ako masyado. Hindi, I am just doing my job," Jimlani said.
Jimlani said with DCott's current state, he expects their income to rise to as much as P20 million by the year.
DCott operates for 24 hours daily, with around 160 commercial establishments, 250 transient peddlers, 160 porters, and 46 in house workers.
"The Ecoland Terminal daily would have 10 to 15 thousand people arriving and 15 to 20 thousand people leaving. There are 750 bus departures daily," he said.
Meanwhile, Jimlani is also on top of securing the city's main overland terminal.
Jimlani said DCott has one team of Special Citizens Armed Active Auxiliary and one K9 team composed of two dogs and two handlers.
"Strikto tayo pagdating sa security. Lahat ini-inspect ang mga bag pagdating ang we have sniffing dogs all the time," he said.

psyche September 12th, 2010, 07:15 PM Pearl Farm Beach Resort: The Jewel of Southern Mindanao

Even for a seasoned traveler like me, Mindanao remains one of my least-visited destinations, having only been to Zamboanga City in 1976 and Camiguin Island (and its gateway Cagayan de Oro City) in 2001. Opportunity beckoned anew when I was invited by Mr. Alfredo Roca and Ms. Mitch Garcia, managing director and marketing communications manager, respectively, of Fuego Hotels and Properties Management Corp., to see for myself Pearl Farm Beach Resort on the Island Garden City of Samal in Davao, the third property managed by Fuego Hotels in the country. Upon arrival at Davao International Airport, I was whisked, together with other guests, to the Pearl Farm Marina in Lanang, which has four air-conditioned rooms with bath and cable TV, an indoor restaurant and a swimming pool, all exclusive for guests to enjoy while waiting for the next boat service to the resort, their next flight or just to hang around. From its developed wharf, the resort is a 45-min. motorized boat ride. I went there via a 20-min. speedboat ride and was welcomed at the resort by Mitch together with Mikel Villaverde, the resort’s general manager.
This 11-hectare, Class “AAA” resort, located on a secluded cove at the city’s Kaputian District, was formerly the home, since 1958, of the Aguinaldo Pearl Farm, which produced cultured pink, white and gold pearls from white-lipped oysters brought from Jolo. It ceased operations in 1980 but was developed into a world-class beach resort, which opened in 1992. It started out with 10 hillside cottages and two Samal cottages on stilts. Today the main resort has expanded into 70 guest rooms (17 standard Hilltop rooms, 21 superior Samal Houses, six executive, two-story Samal Suites and 19 de luxe Mandaya Houses and seven Malipano Villas) made mainly with bamboo and wood and harmonizing with the clear blue sea, the white sand and its backdrop of impressive greenery. All rooms, cottages and villas are air-conditioned, with cable TV, minibars, coffee and tea facilities, safety deposit boxes and hair dryers.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j54/jrdollesin/biyahero/pearl_farm.jpg
Noted architect Francisco “Bobby” Mañosa designed the cottages and villas as close as possible, in both materials and form, to the Maranao and Samal tribes they were named for. For its depiction of regional traits, the resort received the Kalakbay Award for Best Resort for two consecutive years (1994 and 1995) and was one of the venues of the 1994 Miss Universe pageant. The Samal cottages, one of which was assigned to me, were patterned after the stilt houses of the seafaring Samal tribes of the Sulu archipelago. Its interior focuses on Yakan, Tausug, Maranao and Badjao culture and craft. During the day, schools of tiny fish frolic between the sturdy poles that support my cottage. At night, the sound of the waves, lightly splashing under the floor, is a soothing aid to slumber. A jar of water and a coconut shell dipper are placed near the entrance to each house so that guests may wash away the sand after a day of barefoot walking on the beach. In local custom, this gesture is also symbolic of a cleansing of the spirit. Getting around the resort is easy as there are two shuttles, one of them electric-powered.
The Maranao Restaurant, a cavernous dining pavilion replete with tribal motifs, has a menu with an assortment of international culinary influences, all wonderfully prepared by Filipino chef Mr. Edgar Chavez. Cocktails, plus inspiring views of the sea and nearby De la Paz and Malipano islands, can be enjoyed at the Parola Bar. Both restaurant and bar offer free Wi-fi access. The resort also has two swimming pools, one of which was built right on the shore, giving the illusion that the pool water meets the sea, while the other has a jacuzzi. The Ylang-Ylang Spa, located beside a waterfall and beneath swaying coconut palms, offers several indulgent body and beauty treatments based on natural products. They include a relaxing Papaya Body Scrub, a revitalizing Honey and Cucumber Facial Cleansing and the refreshing Floral Foot Soak. Massage therapies, embracing the most effective European and Asian techniques and using the stress-busting and soul-soothing power of coconut oil, include the healthy aromatherapy massage.
An aqua sports center offers windsurfing, fishing, jet skiing, sea kayaking, island-hopping, banana boat rides, Hobie cats, wave runners, snorkeling and scuba diving, while a weaving house has a couple of tribal women making colorful tribal dresses, costumes and jewelries. Pearls, hats, T-shirts and other accessories can be bought at the nearby boutique. There are also two function rooms, two tennis courts, game room (billiards, chess, mahjong, etc.), children’s playground and a mini-aviary.
On my last day at the resort, I crossed over (a two-a-half-minute boat ride) with senior sales manager Ms. Eileen F. Tuanio, to the 7-hectare Isla Malipano. Also part of the resort, it has a white-sand beach, an offshore reef plus seven private luxury villas (five three-bedroom and two four-bedroom), each with a wide veranda and its own butler for food orders and other guest assistance. The 200-pax, octagonal and multifunctional Malipano Gazebo, a perfect alternative for weddings, theme parties and other occasions, is located at the other end of the island.
The wrecks of two World War II Japanese freighters are located 60 meters away and in front of the resort. The 40-m.(132-ft.) long Wreck I is located just a few meters from the resort’s Samal houses, in 35 m. (115 ft.) of water. Here, you can find groupers, jacks, moray eels and others. For advanced divers, an open-bay hatch allows safe penetration. It is also recommended for underwater photography. The slightly smaller, 35-m. (115-ft.) long Wreck II rests on its side at a shallower depth of 28 m. (98 ft.) of water.

Budots September 13th, 2010, 06:41 AM Davao City gets multi-sectoral support for disaster preparedness

MANILA, Philippines - Davao City has long been praised for its ability to deliver good governance, business opportunities, public safety and services. Recently, the city raised the ante with the acquisition of its own weather monitoring equipment.
Despite being relatively typhoon-free, Davao City has not been spared by flash floods. The city experienced its worst flooding in 2007, prompting the immediate improvement of its drainage and waste management systems.
Still not satisfied, the city government, under the leadership of then mayor Rodrigo Duterte, decided to expand what was already considered a world-class emergency response system by looking for partners to introduce essential enhancements.
Interestingly enough, the solution came from within Davao City.
The city, with the help of Smart Communications Inc., saw the potential of further developing the search and rescue management entry of the Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) which placed second during the telco’s 2009 SWEEP Innovation and Excellence Awards.
AdDU is one of Smart’s school partners under its Smart Wireless Engineering Education Program (SWEEP), a unique industry-academe partnership that seeks to help raise the level of technology and engineering education in the country, particularly in the field of Electronics and Communications Engineering.
Under the program, student-faculty teams of SWEEP schools are recognized for innovative wireless applications during the annual SWEEP Awards.
AdDU’s SWEEP entry was initially a system designed to track sea vessels in distress via the signals it sends over Smart’s wireless network.
However, further discussions with the city government led to the system’s expansion to include inland tracking, weather and river monitoring capabilities.
This resulted in Smart funding the research and development of a weather and flood monitoring system that would help Davao City’s disaster preparedness program.
Col. Verner Mario Monsanto (left), chief operating officer of Davao’s Rescue 911, and Smart Public Affairs Group head Ramon Isberto during the inauguration of the PSCC.
The Ateneo team worked closely with Smart and concerned local government agencies like Rescue 911, Davao City’s 24-hour emergency response team, and the Davao Gulf Management Council and the Philippine Coast Guard in testing the sea and land-based prototypes.
Smart also brought in the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) to ensure that the system complied with World Meteorological Organization (WMO) standards.
Smart also facilitated and funded the weeklong immersion of AdDU team members in Pagasa. Under the guidance of Pagasa weather specialist II Ferdinand Barcenas, AdDU faculty and team leader engineer Marloue Pidor and project consultant George Frederick Tujan worked on the calibration of two prototypes of their low-cost automatic weather stations.
Each prototype includes a thermometer for measuring temperature, an anemometer for wind speed, wind vane for wind direction, hygrometer for humidity, barometer for pressure, and a rain gauge for rainfall.
The reading collected by these devices will be transmitted over Smart’s wireless network to a Web-based application for analysis.
Pagasa officials were just as interested in ensuring that the AdDU platform would comply with WMO standards since it was to be deployed as part of an early warning system.
Just two months earlier, the country’s weather agency also participated in a public-private partnership that would improve its weather monitoring capability with the co-location of its weather monitoring equipment on Smart’s cell site towers all over the country.
As the technology was being perfected, Davao City also embarked on the construction of the Public Safety Command Center (PSCC).
Housed at the Rescue 911 compound, the PSCC is the city’s nerve center for all matters related to public safety, and this includes law enforcement, traffic management, health and social services, emergency and rescue services, and disaster prevention and management.
Recently, the city celebrated the fruition of its collaboration with private entities during the inauguration of the PSCC. In attendance were City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, then Pagasa administrator Prisco Nilo, and Col. Verner Mario Monsanto, chief operating officer of Davao’s Rescue 911.
Inside the PSCC are an automated weather station (AWS), location tracking systems and a bank of CCTV monitors that show the images captured by numerous CCTV cameras deployed all over the city.
During the event, Smart also donated 20 manual rain gauges for deployment in the city’s 20 flood-prone barangays.
Ramon Isberto, head of Smart’s Public Affairs Group, said, “The solution we have developed in partnership with the Davao City government and the Ateneo de Davao University is unique to Davao. We foresee, however, how other local government units can also benefit from the weather monitoring and disaster alert system that is now in place in Davao City.”
Aside from the AWS located within the Rescue 911 compound, three more units will be deployed in Smart’s relay station in San Fernando, Bukidnon; and cell sites in Marilog and Buda.
Four complementary river monitoring stations, which were also developed by AdDU, will be set up along the Suwawan and Waan rivers and on the Bantol and Lacson bridges, all within Davao City.
Two tracking devices will be issued to the Coast Guard, while another two for land vehicles will be assigned to Rescue 911 for use in its ambulance and mobile patrol vehicles. A personal tracker has also been designed to be worn on the vests of Rescue 911 personnel.
With the support of private sector partners like Smart and AdDU and with inter-government agency collaboration, Davao City is showing the rest of the country how a strong will to enhance its disaster preparedness and response program can produce world-class facilities for the benefit of its residents.

rodincouch September 13th, 2010, 09:31 AM Privatization of waste segregation eyed (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/privatization-waste-segregation-eyed)
DAVAO City is mulling to have the solid waste segregation managed by the private sector in every barangay in the city, an official said Saturday.
City Planning and Development Office officer-in-charge Roberto Alabado said the City Government is considering that barangays segregate their waste by approving an enterprising individual or group per barangay that would be willing to manage the waste segregation in their community.
He said he talked to Cenro officer-in-charge Dominic Felizarta to conduct inventory and to arrange designated garbage collection points with corresponding time.
"I told him (Felizarta) there would be no collection other than these collection points. Kung pananglitan ang garbage bin i-move outside this collection. (When that would be established) I told him there would be no collection other than these collection points," Alabado said.
Alabado, meanwhile, said the city is willing to have an arrangement with people willing to profit out of waste segregation.
"Kung sino yung gustong mag-manage. Kung ayaw ng barangay captain na sila mag-manage ng recovery facility, then i-negosyo ng taong gusto. Sa iyo yan, walang makakapasok na ibang tao. Kayo lang pero i-ensure rin nila ang safety ng mga taong magse-segregate ng household waste. They'll recycle kung anong pwede ma-recycle then yung residual waste yun na lang ang itatapon sa landfill," Alabado said.
He said the plan could possibly affect the informal sector in waste collection. One of the affected sectors is the scavengers who earn their living from segregating household wastes.
He said a scavenger earns as much as P400 per day, which is higher than the daily wage of a skilled construction worker.
Mayor Sara Duterte ordered the Cenro to conduct an inventory on the city's trash bins and designation of permanent designation areas.
The city has 20,000 trash bins scattered all over the metropolis. (Jade C. Zaldivar)

rodincouch September 13th, 2010, 09:45 AM Amalgam of Davaoeno’s way of life (http://www.dailymirror.ph/Sept-2010/09132010/week.html)
Camella Northpoint lends dignity to its rich history
Camella Northpoint, the British colonial themed condo development of Camella Communities, starts to take shape within the heart of north Davao’s emerging business and commercial district, earning this early a reputation as a premier project with a living proposition that is unmatched by any vertical projects in the city.
But beyond the condominium development lies a more compelling character that have yet to unfold, one that is undeniably rooted in the rich history of Davao and the land that Northpoint stands on.
The real story of Camella Northpoint will be told as development progresses, anchored on the city’s verdant environment and rich heritage as a people. And like the melting pot of cultures that Davao is, Camella Northpoint will be an amalgam of the Davaoeno’s way of life - simple, quiet, yet full of color, vigor, and life.
Camella Northpoint has not only one story, but many interesting stories that attest to the richness of the history of its land and the people who lived on it as a vast abaca plantation in the early 1900s. Its history is so rich and colorful, the development taking place on it now and in the future is careful to lend dignity to the land and its environs.
The History
It all started in the early 1900s, when a Scotsman, Robert Ker, arrived in Davao to establish his own abaca business. Ker had been engaged in abaca trading since the 1800s, and came to Davao to build his own plantation. He acquired a property that overlooked the Davao Gulf, building a white European-inspired house that became his home and base of operations.
Ker leased the neighboring lands to expand his plantation, and others in the community started to grow abaca to sell to him. By the 1920s, Davao had become the center of abaca production in the Philippines, a large part of it owed to Ker and his business undertakings.
Ker ceased his abaca operations in 1961 but continued its distribution business, leaving the plantation house to become the residence of the Davao branch manager of Ker & Company up to the time it was sold to Camella in 2009.
While Scottish by birth, Ker had become one of the Davaoeños, fondly remembered by the people, especially descendants of his many employees who tell stories of him bestowing his land to their families.
This bond was strengthened by the citation given by the National Historical Commission to Ker & Company as one of the top 10 oldest companies in the Philippines. Ker had become an indelible part of Davao’s rich history, as one of its foreign inhabitants who became purveyors of commercial development.
Until now, even as the property takes new shape with the construction of the condominiums, the people of Davao, or at least those who knew of the original owners of the property, still nurture good memories of the Scotsman.
The White House
At the highest elevation of Northpoint is the colonial plantation dwelling built by Ker, now called the White House or The Mansion, perched on a verdant hill of green grass and dotted with statuesque age-old Acacia trees, with new imported Caribbean pine trees growing robustly around it.
Robert Ker purportedly viewed his abaca plantation from the White House’s tall, wide windows that gave him a vantage view at all angles. It is believed that the elevation gave him a feel of the highlands of Scotland.
This magnificent European-style house stood sentinel over Davao’s transformation, from its plantation years to the bustling metropolis that it is now fast becoming. For the many decades it had stood on that prominent hill, it was an imposing sight from below, waxing mystique over the fertile imagination of young and not-so-young Davaoeños who would cast an upward glance each time they passed by it.
Over the years, the White House had become a local landmark, remembered as a place to play by those lucky enough to have had access to its vast lawns. The rest of the people contented themselves with gazing at the house atop the hill, aspiring to see it first-hand in its old grandeur.
Now, as it stands still amidst the modern development of Camella Northpoint, the White House holds its own as a symbol of good living, something that Davaoñeos are proud to be known for. It provides the inspiration for the master plan development of Northpoint as Camella pursues development that respects the existing architecture of this iconic structure.
Camella Northpoint is unquestionably a modern development, but the rich history of its land will be preserved by restoring the White House to its former glory. It can take a further step by involving the community in the restoration efforts, through the architectural society, educational institutions, artists, and local restorers in the city.
These are two of the compelling stories of Northpoint, whose vision unfolds as it undergoes development, making it a destination of choice that has a remarkable character uniquely its own.

Kinda superficial, but i wish buildings would stop having that culture of flaunting or showing off cheap banners and irritating tarpaulins (ang uban kay sako pa) on their buildings' facades. I noticed that in most of our buildings (not all) in the city. Probably not only common in Davao City but in other cities too, however, I hope it would stop.

2 Mindanao cities top in literacy
Tuesday, September 14, 2010
DAVAO City was awarded first place among highly urbanized cities for its exemplary accomplishments in literacy development.
Tagum City also won the top prize for component cities category.
Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur copped second place in Municipal Level Category A, while Cor Jesu College of Digos City in Davao del Sur won second place for its literacy program.
During the 2010 National Literacy Conference and Awards held in Baguio City last September 9 to 11, Davao City bested highly urbanized cities in delivering literacy development through its programs and projects.
The city was pitted against Butuan, General Santos, Puerto Princesa, Tacloban, and Pasay City.
"This is an honor for all of us here in Davao City…Literacy now does not only focus on education, it also focus on social services." Mayor Sara Duterte said.
The mayor added that good result was achieved through the joint effort of the City Social Services and Development Office, City Mayor's Office, Vice Mayor's Office, City Planning and Development Office (CPDO), the City Health Office and all other social services department of the city.
The mayor was represented by CPDO acting head Roberto Alabado, receiving trophies from the Literacy Coordinating Council (LCC).
A cash prize of P100,000 was also given to the local government.
Alabado said the LCC weighed each contending city's social services based on the following:
* Up-to-date barangay mapping;
* Comprehensive City Development Plan and Structure that showed strategic means for the delivery of basic services to its people;
* Strong, committed and dynamic LGU leadership and management of programs that integrate literacy in all aspects of LG service;
* Institutionalization of literacy programs from early childhood (home-based) to senior citizens and even among diverse sectors to include indigenous peoples (IPs), special children, drug dependents, minors in conflict with the law, street children, prisoners, and agricultural workers which translates that awareness of programs and service is massive;
* Integration of literacy programs in various sectoral programs with strong emphasis on peace and order and social protection supported by strategic information dissemination and people's participation;
* Madrasah Program for 50 Muslim Communities in the city as LGU provides for a considerable amount of budget for the Madrasah and other Muslim benefiting initiatives;
* Central 911, open to all people in the city 24/7 which provides immediate response to health, safety, and peace and order situation of people under critical circumstances;
* Home-based, school-based, sector-based, community-based, and parish-based programs with facilities and surroundings made conducive to learning and training;
* Book Mobile/Share-a-Book programs for sustained reading interest and skills;
* Showcase of the history and heritage of the City thru Museo Davao, manned by young artists and curators, where cultural and educational values and skills are nourished;
* Strong alliance and networking with community members, business establishments, GOs, and NGOs. (Jade C. Zaldivar)

grand pa rin tingnan ang marco polo! more glassy building in davao, for now we have 3 glassy highrises: mp, landco and pryce.
i still believe matagal pa ma beat itong MP height, kung ground to rooftop height ang pag uusapan kasi kahit 18 storeys lang ito we all know mga 21 floors high ito counting the floor divisions. stand in front of the 17 storey landco, and do the same sa marco polo. you will notice MP is way way taller, not just 1 floor taller.

davaoeagle September 14th, 2010, 05:19 AM Accolades rain on Davao’s ethnic designs
Written by: Roque , Marilyn
Tuesday, 14 September 2010
IT WAS the first time the ramp was the focus of attention during the three days duration of the Mindanao Trade Expo 2010. Going around shopping for the novelties at the Trade Expo did not seem tiresome at all, as every afternoon, models paraded showing the designs made of our own materials and done by the fashion designers Davao is proud to call its own.
Fashion Czar Alfonso “Boy” Guino-o, who by the way just arrived from the Philippine Travel Mart at the Mega Trade Hall of SM Megamall where Davao City’s Pavilion was adjudged the “Best Pavilion”, showed that he is still the designer to beat when it comes to the rayon fabrics which carry the Tinalak, Dagmay and Bagobo prints. These fabrics, which used to be stiff and not-so wearable, created great demands among the ladies of Mindanao who love to wear them during formal occasions.
The indigenous and ethnic-inspired creations always manage to attract buyers on the spot as what we observed during the recently held Mindanao Trade Expo 2010 at the Bangko Sentral Ng Pilipinas here in Davao City. Boy Guino-o’s one-man fashion show was a well applauded event during the recently concluded Philippine Travel Mart.

The whole country, including the Davao region, may have been affected by the botched hostage crisis at the Luneta in Manila, but the tourism sector believes this is just a temporary setback in their efforts to attract tourists to the country and the region.
The Davao region’s tourism prime movers made an impact during the Philippine Travel Mart held in Manila over the weekend. The event was a gathering of various tourism operators from the different regions of the Philippines, each of which was given the opportunity to promote their tourism destinations during the three-day affair.
Among the destinations being promoted during the Travel Mart were Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Palawan, Cebu, Camarines Sur, El Nido, Sagada in Ilocos, Boracay, Coron and Bicol.
“The delegation aimed to impress the Travelmart audience about the many sights and sounds of the Davao region,” Southern Philippines Tourism Council chairperson Mary Ann Montemayor said.
Davao Tourism Association’s Susan Palad said Davao City has not at all been affected by the hostage crisis which landed the country at the top of the list of countries that Chinese nationals have been advised not to visit by their government.
Montemayor said the fresh cutflowers and bountiful bignay wine that adorned the Davao pavilion made an impression on the Travel Mart visitors. Davao’s products lure visitors to the city even with the existing ban, she added.
But more than the fruits and the cheese, Palad said, the Travel Mart visitors were impressed by the fashion show which showcased the designs of Davao’s very own Boy Guinoo.
The region’s tourism players agree that what has kept Davao’s image alive and its tourism industry vibrant are the domestic tourists who keep coming the whole year round.
The hostage-taking in Manila happened a few days after the successful celebration of the Kadayawan Festival which was attended by foreign and domestic tourists. Davao City tourism office head Rizal Giovanni Aportadera said the peaceful celebration of the Kadayawan only highlighted Davao City as one of the top destinations in the country.
Another Davao pride which is expected to place the city in a favorable light among European tourists is Kublai Millan, who is one of the four Mindanaoan artists invited to present their exhibit in Belgium. Kublai is widely known not only in Davao but also all over the country, for his giant and eye-catching sculptures.
Palad said the presence of Kublai and the other Mindanao artists in Belgium will show the world that there are many good things about Davao and the Philippines which they have to personally discover.
Local and international painting exhibits usually feature Manila artists, but it is now the time for Mindanaoans like Kublai to shine. Their exhibits are now on display at the art galleries of Brenart International, which usually features the art works of ancient Priental and African as well as pre-Columbian artists.
Aside from Kublai, the other Mindanao artists featured in “Tanaw Mindanao” are Joel Geolamen, Rameer Tawasil and Abdulmari Asia Imao.
But, while the region’s tourism sector played down the negative effects of the hostage crisis, city councilor Paolo Duterte would rather ensure the safety of tourists visiting Davao City by declaring tourist spots here “gun-free”.
