^^well, why not?we can do it!we can start with just one street as an experiment and see how it goes for at least a year.one thing with pinoys though-we hate walking.even with short distances we take a ride with jeepneys or cabs.and we take pride in alighting from a vehicle right at our doorstep or ''certain'' destination.and i wonder why in the western movies people walk long distance until i experienced it-it's not that bad really.i understand we have a tropical climate with a killer humidity@times.but we can change attitudes and call it ''new trends in living high".just my honest opinion.:):)

It's really possible, San Pedro area is almost a "pedestrian lane" ,Sundays are closed to vehicles because of crowded San Pedro devotees and tiangges within the vicinity and protection pud na sa seat of government of Davao, we can ask @Bagani or @ Paulkrps to relay it to Art Boncato and maybe i can tell Bong Aportadera about it. :)

seriously the major obstacle will be the TMC(Traffic Management Commission) , it will be chaotic not to include the major roads of San Pedro, Anda and Legaspi.

i guess this will ease traffic in the area... kay ang mga tao muna-og naman sa magallanes, anda, claveria and rizal kung musulod sila sa "mall" (pedestrian lane)... ug ang mga dato nga magkinoche they have to park their cars sa mga parkhouses nearby kung ganahan sila musod sa mall to shop, transact sa city hall, or magsimba sa san pedro...

Date 2010 focuses on agri-business

DAVAO Trade Expo (Date) 2010 this coming November 5-7 at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas will focus mainly on agri-business.

About 300 delegates coming from top banana exporting countries and growing banana exporting countries like China and several others are expected to attend the Date 2010 Philippine Global Banana Summit.

Post your reaction to the Manila hostage crisis

The banana summit is the major highlight in this year's trade expo.

It is based in the rationale that Mindanao is a fertile land and majority of its businessmen are producers of agri-products.

With agriculture industry as the showcase, organizers see this year's Date as bigger and bolder.

The summit will also be an opportunity for those who want to venture into agribusiness to be updated on developments in several aspects of the industry like production, export, marketing and consumption of bananas, as well as, the opportunity to network and to be able to learn strategies and techniques from the world's leading agricultural experts.

"Date 2010's main focus is in agri-business because agriculture is the backbone of Mindanao," said Lizabel Holganzo, chair of Date 2010, during a press conference Friday at the Philippine Information Authority.

Among the speakers and experts who will be present during the summit are Kiason Chang of United Nations-Food and Agriculture Organization (UN-FAO), Loretta Sonn of FAO, and Dr. Larry Digal from the University of the Philippines-Mindanao.

Aside from the global summit, there will be a Fruit Cocktail, which will be a venue for the delegates to chill out and enjoy Davao; the Banana Culinary, which will showcase the various banana-based delicacies; and the business matching and agri-tours.

New Davao tourism director takes oath

Davao Region director before Tourism Secretary Alberto Lim Thursday at the Marco Polo Hotel Davao.

"Let's hold hands and conquer new dimensions. It's a great day for tourism today," Boncato said in his speech moments after Lim sworn him in to replace outgoing director Sonia Garcia.

The ceremony at Marco Polo's Sumatra Room was just short but meaningful as friends of Boncato and hotel staff came to witness the proceedings.

Mary Ann Montemayor, head of the Davao Regional Tourism Council, said she was happy with the appointment of Boncato whom, she said, is the man who could "propel the tourism industry to greater heights."

"He's the right guy for the job because of his work ethics," Montemayor said. "To Bongx, soar high and shine greatly."

Lim said he assumed his post as tourism secretary, the name Boncato immediately came to his mind.

He then urged Boncato to held advance the cause of tourism in Mindanao.
"I know this is a big sacrifice on your part. We're glad to have you on board," Lim said. (Charles Raymond A. Maxey)

"I know this is a big sacrifice on your part. We're glad to have you on board," Lim said. (Charles Raymond A. Maxey)

This could start as an "experiment." From sun up to sun down on Sundays only. Like the traditional "tabuan." And see how it will go or how it will be received by the community. Or it could be a permanent development like in a pedestrianization concept. The identified areas will be closed to traffic and promote walking as a way of life, and bring new life to the Davao's traditional shopping district.

Whatever the concept will be, kinahanglan involve dyud tanan stakeholders para wala or less ang resistance.

Not Art Boncato. He is for the Region but he could support it. The right people would include several stakeholders: Tourism Office, City Planning, Traffic Management, Association of Businesses in the area, etc.

But, of course, ipaabot nato sa ilaha. ASAP. This concept is not new. Naistoryahan na ni sa una.

I was just taking photos of Mt. Apo from the terrace this morning (30 mins ago to be exact) when a sudden downpour seemed to dampen the hope of getting clear views of the "grandfather of mountains," which looks its best in the early morning. Luckily, the rain was short-lived and, when the sky cleared up, a perfect arch of a rainbow figured over the southern Davao landscape and directly above Mt. Apo. I took the rare opportunity to capture the wonderful spectacle. Here's one of the better shots among the 30 or so I took. If you look closely at the photo, there appears to be another rainbow on top of the clear one. I thought it's just marvelous in a two-birds-with-one-stone kinda way. Good morning everyone! :)

Why Duterte repeatedly refuses the DILG post?
Saturday, September 18, 2010
More Sections

SINCE the administration of former President Fidel Ramos, Davao City's Rodrigo Duterte was offered the Local Government secretary post.

Since then, the same post has been offered to him by the administrations of Joseph Estrada, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and now President Benigno Aquino III.

And every time, incumbent Vice Mayor Duterte politely refuses such offer for some reasons.

Some people speculated that Duterte does not want to hold a national position because of the huge responsibility and the possibility of his family being dragged into limelight and criticism as part of the national position.

Others said Duterte is trying to avoid being subjected to scrutiny, especially with his alleged involvement in the shadowy vigilante group, Davao Death Squad.

But people close to Duterte and those whom he confided with his reasons said the vice mayor simply does not want to leave the people of Davao City in gratitude for the more than two decades of trust and confidence given to him.

"He doesn't want to leave Davao City. His heart and life belongs to the people of Davao. Utang kabubut-on dili hikalimtan. Siya magpabiling inyong suluguon," said his son, Paolo Duterte.

"He prefers to remain in Davao nearer his constituents. That's what he told me," Mati Mayor Michelle Rabat seconded.

"Rody Duterte is qualified and very competent to handle [the] DILG secretary post. However, I believe he treats with loyalty, respect and honor his compact with the people of Davao City who elected him as mayor for 20 years, congressman and now vice mayor. With this overwhelming mandate and consent of the governed, I believe his commitment to the people of Davao City is his primordial concern. Like a father whose love for his children is without parallel," Davao City third district Representative Isidro Ungab said.

In his recent visit to Davao City, President Aquino met with Duterte to discuss some issues. Both officials, however, denied they talked about the DILG post offer.

But Mayor Sara Duterte confirmed to the media later that the President indeed offered the post "again" to her father.

An insider said Duterte was the first choice of President Aquino to head the DILG post even if Vice President Jejomar Binay declared his interest for the same post. This is also the reason it took long before DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo was appointed.

And with the bungled hostage incident in Manila, the Aquino administration is again convincing Duterte to accept the post. (Ben Tesiorna)

Davao City: host to 1st Asian Bird Fair

http://img843.imageshack.us/img843/7697/bannerbirdfest.jpg (http://img843.imageshack.us/i/bannerbirdfest.jpg/)

Asian Bird Fair, environmental concerns, nature conservation, Philippine Eagle

[Media Release]

Manila—Birdwatchers, conservationists and eco-tourism promoters from all over Asia and elsewhere have their eyes on the Philippines, which is hosting Asia’s first-ever region-wide bird festival.

The Wild Bird Club of the Philippines said the First Asian Bird Fair will be held in Davao City from 24 to 26 September 2010, in tandem with the 6th Philippine Bird Festival, the country’s premier avian conservation and eco-tourism event. The milestone event is co-hosted by the Philippine Eagle Foundation and the Davao City local government.

1st Asian Bird FairThe First Asian Bird Fair — themed “Nurture Nature, Save our Future” — is a common initiative of the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines, the Bird Conservation Society of Thailand, the Chinese Wild Bird Federation, the Wild Bird Society of Taipei, the Malaysian Nature Society and the Nature Society (Singapore).

The Asian Bird Fair, which highlights the respective bird festivals of the participating countries, seeks to enrich eco-tourism through birdwatching and promote the natural and cultural heritage of host cities.

The Asian Bird Fair and 6th Philippine Bird Festival will be held at the Waterfront Insular Hotel Davao on 24-25 September, in time for the autumn migration of birds from Japan, China and parts of Siberia. Entrance to the Asian Bird Fair exhibit area is free of charge, according to organizers.

Highlights of the fair include the Bird Conservation Forum and turn-over ceremony to representatives of the Chinese Wild Bird Federation, host of next year’s Asian Bird Fair in Tainan City. International and Philippine delegates will also tour the Philippine Eagle Center and Eden Garden Resorts while in Davao.

WBCP president Michael Lu said the fair will include photo exhibits, presentations and fun activities for the young “and young at heart.” Children can also look forward to a guided tour at low tide of the tidal flats fronting the Waterfront Insular Hotel, where children can have a close look at marine species like fiddler crabs and mudskippers as well as spectacular views of herons, egrets and shorebirds.

Lu expects the event to draw birdwatchers, conservationists, eco-tourism promoters, sustainable development providers, and nature lovers from around the country, Asia and Europe.

Alice Villa-Real, chair of the committee organizing the 1st Asian Bird Festival and 6th Philippine Bird Festival, said the latest initiative is a significant move to draw attention to pressing conservation issues.

“We can make a significant difference to protect the rich bird life and habitats of our islands, whilst promoting responsible enjoyment of nature and encouraging related sustainable businesses in the local communities,” Villa-Real pointed out.

Mayors of Davao City and Balanga CityInternational groups participating in the Asian Bird Festival are Chinese Wild Bird Federation, Bird Conservation Society of Thailand, Malaysian Nature Society, Nature Society of Singapore, Wild Bird Society of Taipei, the Shanghai Wild Bird Society, Fujian Birdwatching Society, Kaoshiung Wild Bird Society, Wild Bird Society of Tainan, Hong Kong Birdwatching Society, Eco-education and Resources Center, Asian Raptor Research and Conservation Network, Borneo Bird Club, Hornbill Research Foundation, the Biodiversity and Nature Conservation Association, Bird Conservation Nepal and the Oriental Bird Club confirmed participation in the event.

Local organizations joining are Conservation International, Fauna and Flora International, Katala Foundation, WWF-Philippines, Birding Adventure Philippines, Kaakbay, Malagos Garden Resort, Monfort Bat Cave & Conservation Foundation, Philippine Association of Wildlife Veterinarians, Philippine Wild Bird Photographers, My Zoo Foundation, City of Alaminos (Pangasinan), City of Balanga (Bataan) and the Municipality of Candaba (Pampanga).

Event sponsors include the Philippine Eagle Foundation, the City Government of Davao, Team Energy Foundation, Primer Group, Aboitiz Power, Phoenix Petroleum Philippines, Tanduay Distillers, Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri, Fauna & Flora International, Philippine Association of Wildlife Veterinarians, C. K. Lu Enterprises, Waterfront Insular Hotel Davao, Grand Men Seng Hotel and NCCC Mall.

DAVAO CITY WINS MAJOR AWARDS IN PHILIPPINE TRAVEL MART

Davao City, a Hall of Famer in the 'Best Booth' competition in the annual Philippine Travel Mart, adds another feather to its cap as it won this year's 'Best Pavilion' and 'People's Choice' awards.

The Davao City pavilion featured fresh bounties from the city, such fruits and flowers, handicrafts, local products, confectioneries, as well as a display of tribal costumes made from fabrics woven by local tribes and designed by top Dabawenyo designer Alfonso "Boy" Guino-o.

The 21st PTM, the country's biggest travel and tourism trade show, was held at SM Megamall Mega Trade Hall in Mandaluyong City.

Great and small things have come and gone in Davao City. Shopping Malls started in the early 90's, thanks to Victoria Plaza. In the Philippines Shopping Malls are a catalyst to urban growth-financially. It usually create jobs for the locals and of course improves the area around it. More growth follows with Medium or small businesses setting up shops within the area and the land value appreciates.
Shopping malls offers convenience to shoppers, idlers, shoplifters, loitterers, truants, bored members of society and others. One need not elaborate the goods, services and various intertainment you can find inside this colossal structure. And let's not forget the goodness of the centralised airconditioning that blows away extra degree of heat off your body once you step inside it's massive entry ways.
One thing that distinguishes a mall from oldstyle stand alone department store is the presence of cinemas in its complex often 4 or 6 in numbers. Now this has greatly affected the old cinema houses around town.
You see the mall,in its wake has destroyed old businesses small and large and the most damage it inflicted was to the Old Grand Dames-our big cinemas downtown with elegant marble lobbys have been left mothballed, delapidated, gone and forgotten save for some which shows cheap and nasty Xrated?films just to get by.Shame, shame ,shame!
In developed countries the number of cinema houses in malls are subject to city council regulation so as not to disadvantage the old established film houses.
Of course the old cinemas have to lift their game and compete by keeping their establishment up to scratch.
I'm sure there are similar stories around the country. Well big fish eat small fish.

then, those garcia-owned cinemas were the mainstay of ilustre. galaxy was touted the biggest in these parts. galaxy was the most elegant i supposed, and pretty spacious and well designed.

landmark was already problematic when it opened. access to it was limited and compounded even more with the pedestrian barriers and it was in the wrong location.

Thanks angkol, Garmond and Golden it was. I think the late 80's and early 90's were dominated by the jaro-operated cinemas like ideal, odeon and eagle plus lawaan and landmark. Queen's was also a nice cinema but I like the facade of Ace cinema.

Guys the 3 G's - that is garmond , golden and galaxy theatres are beautiful in its heydays but have been left to deteriorate and not keep up with time. The greatest disappointment is the loss of Queens theatre and the slow agonising death of Lawaan theatre-both grand in every way.
In cities like NYC where there are no malls but just 2 big department stores, good old movie houses thrived. Here in Adelaide we keep our old cinemas, some really big ones are divided into 4 medium size viewing rooms.our gigantic IMax was closed and converted into 6 smaller cinemas and cafes.it only lasted less than a decade.

.
They were Golden, Garmon and Galaxy. They were owned by the Garcias. I remember them all too well. My classmate was a cousin of theirs so we got in for free a few times. Galaxy, was Mindanao's largest one time up until Queen's opened up. Queens was huge. My father used to take me there. They had a great peanut stand outside and Merco next door.
Lawaan was doomed in the 80's already. Bad location and too small of a theatre. My former professor managed it.
Amazingly, I still saw the Life and Eagle theater signs down Claveria. Both theaters used to show Tagalog movies.
The small cinemas at NCCC and SM are ok though. So those old cinema houses aren't so badly missed by Davaoenos.

Davao food exchange terminal to
rise in an NDC property in Toril (http://www.dailymirror.ph/Sept-2010/09202010/biz3.html)

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews) - After being shelved for about a decade, the proposed Davao Food Exchange Terminal project will finally push through to provide post harvest and market support for Davao’s fresh food exporters, Davao businessmen said on Friday.

Ramon Allado, chair of the Southern Philippines Construction Core Group (SPCCG), said the food terminal, which will feature a cold storage facility, a Bagsakan for fresh farm goods and spaces for rent for small and medium enterprises, has been identified as the city govern-ment’s priority project in the next three years and the Regional Development Council’s priority infrastructure support for the identified industry clusters in Southern Mindanao. It will serve as a hub where farmers can directly sell fresh farm goods to buyers and exporters, who can easily avail of the cold storage facility to lengthen the shelf life of these goods while awaiting shipment to the market.

The project has been proposed within the 10-hectare property of the National Development Company (NDC) in Daliao, Toril and will sit next to the proposed agro-industrial park that will accommodate potential locators from the region’s food-based industries.

Allado presented the project in the regional economic managers’ forum at Marco Polo Hotel during the President Aquino’s first visit to Davao Thursday.

For years, small and medium exporters have been clamoring for a cold storage facility, which can extend the shelf life of highly perishable agriculture goods when ships are not yet available to bring them to the markets. Allado, however, said an ordinance is still needed to be passed identifying the Bagsakan within the area, where farmers from different parts of Southern Mindanao can directly drop their goods.

“Both the government and the private sector consider with urgency the establishment of the Food Exchange Complex in Davao to benefit the whole region,” according to the briefing papers presented during the forum.

The project proponents included the NDC, the city government and the SPCGG.

Allado said the project will tap the informal settlers within the proposed 25-hectare agro-industrial park for possible jobs.

“Why food terminal?” he asked, “The city government believes that Davao city needs the food complex as it envisions Davao city as the center of agribusiness and agro-processing in the region.

He said the city has already prepared the necessary off-site infrastructure, including the farm to market roads and the access road leading to the site.

The briefing paper said the project is “slowly shaping up” as possible developers, locators and support services have been identified.

Interested locators engaged in poultry, fruit processing, agri-processing for the Middle East market and cold storage facilities have expressed interest in the project.

The constructor’s group DCACI, a member of the Philippine Constructors Association, will source funds through the Official Development Assistance (ODA) while the Department of Agriculture will help build and consolidate the Bagsakan area. Allado said the 10-hectare property will be the NDC’s equity to the project, which will be lined up in the government’s program under the build-operate-transfer scheme. Both the NDC and the Department of Trade and Industry will possibly sign a memorandum of understanding with the city government and the private sector represented by the SPCCG to organize the steering committee of the project.

According to the briefing paper, the region’s agriculture-driven growth in the last five years reflected business confidence in the region’s economic potentials.

Mindanao business also believed that agriculture can “stabilize” the country’s economy against the impact of the global economic crisis and that they needed to set up the food terminal facility to boost the competitiveness of Southern Mindanao exporters. Germelina Lacorte/MindaNews

WTC plans to invest P1.9B in Davao in 2010
Written by Manuel T. Cayon / Reporter
Sunday, 19 September 2010 10:09
DAVAO CITY —The investment group behind the World Trade Center (WTC) convention complex in Manila will be visiting this city for the second time to firm up its interest to invest as much as P1.9 billion in various real-estate projects this year.

The group visited the city early this month to scan the city for investment prospects. They plan to go to Davao City again this week.

Jason Magnaye, officer in charge of the Davao City Investment Promotion Center (DCIPC), said the WTC group would finalize its interest when they meet this week with city investment officials, and also confirm if they would find interest in the suggestion of Mayor Sara Duterte to build a convention center.

The investment group has interests in industrial estate, convention center and residential development.

“They are serious. The fact that it was their senior management partner points to their interest. It’s just that we are not privy yet to their possible investment,” Magnaye said.

The mayor has strongly pushed for a convention center to consolidate the market hold of the city as a favorite venue of national gatherings of professional and government groups, including the host in 2006 of the Asean Tourism Forum, Asia’s premier travel and tour event.

Duterte wants a venue to accommodate 5,000 persons and the City Planning Office has already searched for possible areas, mostly outside the poblacion.

A separate construction of a sports complex was already under way at a corner section of the barrio Obrero campus of the University of Southeastern Philippines (USEP), and being funded by the congressional fund of former Speaker Prospero Nograles.

Magnaye said the sports complex would be left to its being a sports arena “because a convention center is different, rather horizontal while the sports center is bleacher-type in seating the participants.”

The investment would give convention-goers a more spacious center, he said, and would be intended to firm up the city’s capacity to host more national and international gatherings.

The DCIPC has targeted to reach P1.9 billion in investments this year, propped up already by four investments in the first quarter of P612 million in two real-estate projects, an agribusiness program and a tourism project.

Two more projects were approved in the second quarter for a P119-million subdivision project in Catalunan Grande, the Residencia del Rio of Wellspring Subdivision, and the P322-million mixed-use medium-rise building on Mount Apo Street.

Real-estate projects that included a commercial building were also placed in the pipeline by investors who made inquiries into possible areas of investment

I guess Lawaan was not doomed, it was bad management imo,but still the only remaning stand alone theatre right now! lol. Lawaan was the most theatre-friendly imo better than Queens. The doomed theatre was Garnet, nice place but bad location, located in Uyanguren now occupied by NCCC.

The BSP does not fit the bill anymore as an international exhibit and convention hall. I hope that the convention center that the mayor is pushing will be picked-up by investors. With NCCC no longer having its convention hall, we definitely will be having difficulty in hosting another big event the likes of Asean Tourism Forum.

Business support offices open

DAVAO CITY -- The Davao office of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has opened satellite offices of the National Economic Research and Business Assistance Center (NERBAC) to serve the region’s four provinces, namely: Compostela Valley, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur and Davao Oriental.

"By establishing a satellite NERBAC office in the provinces, the delivery of business intervention to the potential investor will be faster, owing to the more efficient process of business registration and licensing," Marizon S. Loreto, DTI-XI regional director, said in a statement. She added that her office has started a survey to determine the amount of time and number of steps each businessman goes through in applying for a permit to start operations. Nenita S. Nazareno, DTI director for Davao del Norte, said it now takes one to three weeks to process such an application, when, theoretically, it can be done in a day.

IMHO, this also helps the government in monitoring businesses in all of the provinces concerned. They can also create a consolidated database to identify which sector are already saturated and what sector needs more investments including the locations.

speaking of dilapidated..... Gaisano Center..... naunsa na na'?

it was once our pride and joy.it's disheartening to look at this building now-just a ghost of its past glory.it's signage are hanging precariously and vendors below it didn't seem to mind.
on the brighter side, someone told me they will turn it into a BPO facilty.can someone confirm this rumor.

Davao food exchange terminal to rise in an NDC property in Toril

By Germelina Lacorte | Sunday| September 19, 2010 | Filed under: Agriculture, Business, Top Stories

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/18 September) — After being shelved for about a decade, the proposed Davao Food Exchange Terminal project will finally push through to provide post harvest and market support for Davao’s fresh food exporters, Davao businessmen said on Friday.

Ramon Allado, chair of the Southern Philippines Construction Core Group (SPCCG), said the food terminal, which will feature a cold storage facility, a Bagsakan for fresh farm goods and spaces for rent for small and medium enterprises, has been identified as the city government’s priority project in the next three years and the Regional Development Council’s priority infrastructure support for the identified industry clusters in Southern Mindanao.

(Germelina Lacorte/MindaNews)
