Bagani August 17th, 2006, 05:56 AM Hi. I just would like to ask where I can find sites with images of futuristic-looking buildings that fits an IT facility. If one is to be built in Davao, how would you like it to look like? I found a few but I'm not satisfied. :)
Thanks.
Check the works of British Architect Sir Norman Foster and French Architect Jean Nouvel. You can easily find images of their works on the net.

Beautiful sites!
But this could easily be erased from the face of the earth with a senseless oil spill like what's happening now in Guimaras Island. I was one of the planners for their tourism master plan. Good potential but wiped out with a nasty oil spill.
Is Davao prepared for such eventuality? Do we have a response team on standby?

Guys, I just had one heck of a flight! I thought this trip would be cancelled and I was damn frustrated at the MIA terminal this morning.......But at least, now im officially back here in Davao (for four days!) :) :) :) and im darn surprised with the new things ive seen (as far as my eyes can see).
OT - I thought I wont be able to make it today. I missed my flight from Cebu to Davao which departed at 5:00am this morning. So, I had no choice but to apply as one of the so called "chance pax" with an additional charge. Since my orig tkt is under a promotional fare and the only available seat is under a regular rate, I paid more than 3k :bash: or a cost of a new ticket. huhuhuhuhuhuhuh
But when I arrived here sa Davao International Airport, nawala yung galit and frustrations ko.I was amazed with the "welcome presentation". Two groups were performing a tribal dance. One group - sa may baggage area performed a Muslim Dance. The other group, sa may Information Desk performed a Bagobo dance. Jaw dropping kaayo and I loved it! daghan diay new small buildings sa airport area. wala jud nasayang akong pag anhi dire. Right now im in NetExpress Ilustre. The only thing that i dislike is the new NetExpress Ilustre. When I left Davao (almost 3 years ago) it was the largest internet cafe in Visayas - Mindanao. Now, binago pala nila yung arrangement sa loob - I hate the new NetExpress - parang ordinary internet cafe na lang...unlike before na parang call center ang set up with private cubicles pa!
Anyway hope to see u all mamaya! :)

Sige lang ug chage sa name noh. Habang nagkadako, nagabao name nya. Maalala ko, una Davao Regional Hospital, sunod naging Davao Medical Centre, ngayon palitan na naman ng Souther Phil Med Center. Pero oks lang man din.

Yeah, I'm not so big on sweets but I've tasted their Mungo Hopia and it was so good.
tj_brewed August 17th, 2006, 07:09 AM Kudos to the DIA management! Paglapag palang sa terminal, satisfied na ang tourists. The welcome presentation is superb! Their "welcome kit" with Davao maps is great! It would really leave a lasting "awesome" impression to the tourists and returning dabawenyos alike.
The taxi drivers are deciplined. Plus may "Isumbong mo kay Mayor" na slip pa na pinamimigay for us travelers incase may taxi drivers na magtitake advantage. Kaya ang bait ng mga drivers! eheheheheheh.
By the way, parang myth na ata yung "puro non airconditioned" ang taxis here in Davao. Coz marami namang Airconditioned Taxis ah. sa DIA Terminal pa lang.......all of the taxis that i saw within DIA are airconditioned and new.

Yeah...dire ko nagahangout before.....naa man gihapon webcam karon. pero mas gwapo sauna than karon. hugawan ko sa arrangement. but dont worry..Ive heard there are new and better net centers here in Davao such as BoyzTrek. Lemme check that our later.....
davaoeagle - for me ang daming bago sa Davao! Sobraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa......aint huge buildings.....but smaller and midsized ones. ive noticed na may mga new commercial complexes sa buhangin area. kahilakon nuon ko dah! i cant believe that im here..

karon...mokurog na sila...imagine naay slip na ihatag diretso kay Mayor! that's why disiplinado sila unlike other airports. I even asked the taxi driver if uso ang "d mag meter" from the airport. ingon sya "wala na dire sa Davao!" they are complying with the general rule to turn on the meter or else patay sila kay Mayor. Well, if naay pasaway.......lista dayun sa "Isumbong mo kay Mayor". wala silang ligtas. kay tanan na mogawas na taxi sa Airport, ilista ang plate number sa may guardhouse, then kuhaon pa jud sa guard ang last name sa passenger for reference and record purposes. That's a good thing. What about the taxis stationed at the airport, are they the new ones as they touted before? I've heard the DIA management went on a bidding for 300 or so new taxis and Reyer Taxi (rumor) went on o win?

Sa '03 man pud ko nihawa sa Davao Sep 7 to be exact. At that time there was a clearing done just in front of the Sun City entrance and another clearing on the hill just beside the entrance of Sun City. Those areas could be the ones where these new developments near the airport now stand.

That might be the aftermath of the APO's head-on collision with the city officials re: No Smoking ordinance which APO defied. Well, the case is still in court as of this time and maybe just maybe APO saw their loss coming so they'd better convert it to a restaurant where they have a smooth-sailing operation in contrast to a pub.

yes bai, one thing nga ikapanghinambog sa davao is cleanliness (the waste segregation), PTA project, peace and order, strict ordinances like smoking ban (dili diay one thing hehe). although wala kaayo dagko nga buildings daghan manpod lowrise buildings (1 - 6 storeys) nga ni fill up sa mga bakante nga lots like buhangin, matina, boulevard, lanang, and agdao. ang agdao pag gabii mora na ug quiapo if you approach it from DMC, but its a much cleaner version.

I have two of my former staff back in the Philippines, an engineer and an interior designer, who are going to Davao for the Kadayawan. They're both from Manila. Ang ganda kasi ng tourist image ng Davao sa Manila. And they're very excited. I wonder if anyone from the group could play host to them - not a place to stay, but a "24-hour tourist info center" for "what to do's" and "where to go's" during the festivities.

Doctors gather here
THE Stroke Society of the Philippines (SSP), a group of doctors in the country, will hold their seventh annual convention in Davao City, slated on August 21 to 23 at the Marco Polo Hotel.
This year's theme is "Empowering the Community for the Stroke Patients."
San Pedro College Physical Therapy dean Manolet Guerrero, who is a member of the group, said it is their first time to hold the convention in Mindanao.
Guerrero, a neurologist, said the main objective of SSP is to raise the awareness of the people about stroke, its signs, cause, and how to prevent it.
"Stroke is a brain attack and it is as dangerous as a heart attack," Guerrero said during the Club 888 press conference at the Marco Polo Wednesday.
According to Guerrero, there are two major risk factors for stroke among Filipinos, which is hypertenstion and diabetes.
When one is hypertensive, there is a 600 percent greater risk of having a stroke and when a person is diabetic, he or she has a 300 percent chance of having a stroke.
He, however, said hypertension is inherited and not from the food that people eat. (BRQ)
davaoeagle August 17th, 2006, 09:57 AM It’s garden show time in Davao City
It is garden show time in Davao City as the city celebrates its yearly Kadayawan Festival. Ven Gallego and other members of the Minfed (Mindanao Federation of Orchid and Ornamental Plant Growers) opened their yearly garden show yesterday at the back of Davao City SM Mall.
Exhibited are some of their most beautiful orchids and ornamentals. Topping the plants on exhibit is the Sansevieria Samurai of Lucy Halasan which was adjudged the Best-in-Show. The variegated Palisota of Ching Chua, on the other hand, was adjudged the first prize winner in the ornamentals category. Also notable is the Platycerium grande, the famous staghorn that is native to Davao. The judges included Fr. Felix Hora, Alfonso Ponce Enrile III, Francis Gener, Rey Santos and Zac B. Sarian. The best orchid in the show is the Grammatophyllum measuresianum.
Also notable among the winning ornamentals are the variegated Pink Ravenia, Arenga hookeriana, a profusely blooming bougainvillea, Alcantarea odorata, and others.
The exhibitors executed beautiful landscape booths. The first prize went to the booth of Ven Gallego which featured red grasses among other ornamentals. The second prize was garnered by the booth of Dr. Linda Martinez while the third prize went to the booth of Cirilo "Ching" Chua.
Over 200 commercial growers and hobbyists are selling their plants in the commercial section. A lot of sansevierias, bromeliads, ferns, aglaonemas, bougainvilleas, euphorbias and many other ornamentals and orchids are available at reasonable prices. The show will run through August 20.
Complementing the Kadayawan Garden Show of Minfed is the plant exhibition and special sale being conducted by members of the Floriculture Industry of Davao Inc. (FIDI) in front of SM Davao. The place is a new selling area of some 19 members of FIDI. During this special exhibition, an additional 20 members are also selling their products.
The FIDI exhibition is part of the promotional activity of FIDI to help the members market their products. Business is good, according to Vicky Jimenez of FIDI. In fact, she sold three of her cycads (Dioon mejiae) for R45,000 to a Davao businessman.
The FIDI is also sponsoring free lectures starting yesterday when Rose Sonora conducted a lecture-demonstration on flower arrangement. Today, Fr. Urbano Salada will lecture on basic bonsai culture.
Tomorrow, a lecture on basic orchid culture will be conducted by Sally U. Leuenberger. Sally is a CPA who went into commercial production of orchids. On August 17, Vangie Go will conduct a lecture on importing and exporting ornamental plants. Other topics are also scheduled up to August 21.

tere August 17th, 2006, 11:18 AM Right now im in NetExpress Ilustre.
May city ordinance kasi na na-approve dito sa davao na di dapat lalampas ang cubicle wall sa monitor level, yung makikita mo yung user. This is because yung na-uso yung lewd shows in chatting , as far as i know (AFAIK).
Hey TJ, welcome back to DAVAO CITY. :) :)

Acaylar's position now open: agency
By Barbara Carla R. Quiero
Personally, this is a very welcome news. Kadayawan could be efficiently organized, directed and managed by the Foundation and the private sector. The Tourism Council should only be there to assist and to liaise between City Hall and the organizing committtee. Id's work is, I think, purely events organizing, GRO and receptionist for the City. It's NOT tourism in broader sense. Alam ba nya to plan for tourism? For tourism infra like scouring the City for potential sites and not seeing the old list that you see year by year in Davao's web pages? Plan for tourism investments? For tourism marketing and promotion? To coordinate and work harmoniously with other agencies of the City and the government? Kung hindi, he has no right being there in the first place. Then the Mayor is right in removing him from his post.
paulkrps August 17th, 2006, 12:20 PM ^^ agree with you on that. i used to work with him in some theatre productions before. id's strenght has been mainly creative. that was pre-90s. after that i went my own direction. to manage a production is a difficult thing, creating a production is another thing. if his strenght is in that then the city government should have known.
Bagani August 17th, 2006, 01:54 PM ... And tourism should be in the forefront in the negotiations for and attracting foreign carriers to Davao. Masyadong mababaw ang pagkaintindi ni Id sa tourism. It is now the world's biggest industry. Kaya dapat ang tourism council maging tourism department na. It should not be under the Office of the Mayor.
paulkrps August 17th, 2006, 03:14 PM ^^ what i'd like to see is a visionary and not just a creative person with good management skills. while the private sector should be commended with the efforts of promoting davao, i still have to see a comprehensive direction from the public sector. i have said it before, i'd like to see a consistent and corporate approach to it. "branding" baga, there is nothing so far i've seen. probably a little here or a little there. there has to be a corporate image, sure we have an eagle or a walingwaling or a durian or a mt apo being used as symbols. but it should not stop at that. thing is, davao is more than this or that symbol. we're trying to put in so many things as a symbol.
i'd like the city government talk with an ad agency, get some inputs, concretize those inputs. what is the strategic campaign here? davao is the brand, but we're like talking of trying to promote so many remedies and so many cough and colds products. create a visual identity to go with the brand not identities.
paulkrps August 17th, 2006, 03:16 PM ^^ talked with the davao forumers before leaving for the office. they were sure a happy bunch. hope to see some pictures after ok guys (and that includes gina). hehehe.
Bagani August 17th, 2006, 03:26 PM I'm sure. Sent a text message to Dinabaw. Mukhang masaya nga sila. Bawi na lang tayo...

EXACTAMENTO! Branding is a very important marketing tool if you know how to capitalize on it. I strongly believe that tourist arrivals and revenue from tourism are directly proportional to the marketing and promotions budget. If you spend more, you get more. But spend intelligently.

very true bagani. i have a why, why do we expect so much for so little and in a short time. branding takes a while to morph and have a life of it's own. if your successful, it becomes instilled in everyone's consciousness. remember coke or pepsi? very good brand wars but very effective. each brand spent so much, but money well spent.
scandinavian girl August 17th, 2006, 04:03 PM Hi paul and hi Bagani...

paulkrps August 17th, 2006, 05:04 PM Beautiful sites!
But this could easily be erased from the face of the earth with a senseless oil spill like what's happening now in Guimaras Island. I was one of the planners for their tourism master plan. Good potential but wiped out with a nasty oil spill.
Is Davao prepared for such eventuality? Do we have a response team on standby?
i hope we are, otherwise it will a major damage. also, another REAL worry is this industrial companies disposing their wastes along the coastal and riverside areas. what is happening now in china we don't want that in our own backyard right?
paulkrps August 17th, 2006, 05:07 PM i posted this reply in the supposedly should be locked no 20 thread, sorry.

David Pomeranz in Davao
By Bam Salvani Published : 2006-08-17
WHEN was the last time you heard of really good, beautiful music? Music that speaks of love and its different facets ---from falling in love to breaking up, unrequited love, relationships and more. Music that touches our soul and hits us to the very core of our hearts.
If you haven’t heard music of such kind for long, then it is just good and right to treat yourself to one wonderful night of great music and experience anew the magic of the immortal love songs of one of the best singers and songwriters of our time, David Pomeranz.
Pomeranz is back to Davao with a big, special concert for the Kadayawan Festival to once again share with us the songs that we, music lovers, have literally grown up with. For who could ever forget his songs like “Got to Believe in Magic,” “King and Queen of Hearts,” “If You Walk Away,” “Born for You” and a lot more -- multi-platinum love ballads all.
What makes Pomeranz’ concert more special is that it purposely helps an anti-child labor group as its sole beneficiary, thus the show’s theme: “End Child Labor, Now!” This is also the first concert event featuring an internationally renowned artist that has low-ticket prices (read: affordable) to accommodate all our music-loving folks.
Indeed, this is a real Kadayawan treat as an international musical event has finally hit Davao. So don’t ever miss this rare chance to witness the magic of the songs of a great musical artist that is David Pomeranz.
Watch him live in concert on August 19, 2006, Saturday, 8:30 pm, at the 4th level Convention Hall of the NCCC Mall. Ticket prices are at: P350 General Admission, P500 Special (guaranteed seats), P800 Premium (guaranteed seats), Limited and Reserved seats: P1,500 Platinum, P1,750 VIP. Get your tickets now!!!

tj_brewed August 17th, 2006, 09:48 PM KAdayawan - Truly the festival of festivals
August 18,2006
Source (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/dav/2006/08/18/feat/truly.the.festival.of.festivals.html")
A SPECTACULAR street dancing, a colorful parade of florally-dressed floats of various shapes and sizes, a food and musical extravaganza -- these are just few of the most-awaited highlights of the week-long celebration of Kadayawan sa Dabaw, which kicked off on August 14.
Thousands of local and foreign tourists flock Davao City to celebrate with Dabawenyos a fun-filled festival, which depicts Davao's rich cultural heritage.
Its remarkable success in the past made it at par with all other festivals in the country, such as Sinulog in Cebu, Ati-Atihan in Aklan and and Dinagyang in Iloilo.
In fact, it is one among the Philippine Festivals being promoted to the world by the Department of Tourism.
Kadayawan, indeed, is an attraction.
What used to be a cultural rite, where ethnic tribes around Mt. Apo usually gathered during harvest-time to give thanks to their gods especially the all powerful Bathala (Supreme God) for a bountiful harvest, has metamorphosed into a Festival of Festivals, celebrated in Davao City during the third week of August.
It has transformed into a festival, not only of thanksgiving, but to honor Davao's rich heritage, its past personified by ancient "lumads" and its people and to promote Davao City as an investment haven where lumads, Christians and Muslims co-exist in harmony.
All these can be witnessed through various activities and events, depicting the city's rich and colorful culture.
The thanksgiving festival was institutionalized in 1986 to unite Dabawenyos after the turbulent Martial Law years. It was then called "Apo Duwaling," a contraction of the famous icons of the city, namely Mt. Apo, durian and waling-waling. Two years later, it was renamed "Kadayawan sa Dabaw" to better reflect the merry spirit and indigenous theme of the celebration. Dayao, the root word of kadayawan, is a Dabawnon meaning good. Its derivative Madayaw is an all-positive lumad word that connotes happiness, beauty, bounty festivity, and good fortune.
Each year, the festival has grown bigger and more spectacular, marked by street dancing, floral float parade, agro-industrial trade fair, cultural shows, food festival and the Bagobo horsefight, a tribal animal show where native stallions are made to compete for a chosen mare.
But its organizers, led by the Kadayawan Foundation, have never run out of fresh activities in a bid to promote the city's rich resources and cultural heritage.
This year, Dabawenyos together with the rest of Mindanao celebrate the 21st Kadayawan sa Dabaw, with the theme: Nagkahiusang Katilingban Bisan Asa sa Kalibutan," aptly so as the festival goes beyond boundaries, limitations and beyond its past successes.
The 21st Kadayawan sa Dabaw, which kicked off with a Pasalamat on Monday, the formal opening rituals with an ecumenical ceremony held in front of the City Hall, and will be concluded on Sunday, has everything revelers could look for.
The food festival, first introduced some five celebrations ago in a limited scale and showcasing Davao's sumptuous culinary treasures, is now one of the festival's highlights with much flair.
Dubbed as Ka'an Dawet (literally means "food and music" in Bagobo), it features Davao cuisine as prepared by various restaurants, hotels, bars, resorts, eateries and caterers, in a bid to strengthen the claim of the city as the epicurean center in Mindanao.
This weeklong fiesta started August 14 and concludes on Sunday on Roxas Avenue. Making the feast even more exciting is the nightly entertainment featuring Davao City's finest bands and musical talents.
A milestone in Kadayawan celebrations is the live coverage of the festivities and beamed live all over the world, giving Davao City a positive exposure and big media mileage.
To be featured live before an international audience is Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan and the Floral Float Parade on Sunday.
True enough, the world is about to witness anew people's celebration of life through street dancing and merriment to the beat of agongs and kulintangs and modern variants along the major streets of Davao City, highlighted by choreographed theatrics and participated in by children and adults clad in colorful costumes.
Each year, the participants have continued to grow. This year, at least 3,000 participants will join Sunday's Indak Indak, of which 50 percent will be coming from the different provinces outside Davao.
The Floral Float Parade, another colorful parade of florally-dressed floats of various shapes and sizes and adorned with thousands of flowers, fruit and fresh produce in wild abundance, will also be beamed live to world TV audience.
Viewers will surely be amazed by a deluge of flora and fauna in the region, thriving amidst forests and marshes protected by mountains and fertile land. Several highlights of the weeklong revelry are also worth mentioning.
The Pamukaw warms up the city with an early dawn noise barrage and parade participated by folks from different sectors.
The Sayaw Mindanao or the Mindanao Indigenous Dance Festival features theatrical tribal groups presenting music and dances of Mindanao's epics, folklore, and traditions.
The Hurawan, or Davao Horse Rites, is a real spectacle of the Bagobo's thanksgiving celebration where native stallions are made to compete for a chosen mare.
Tingog Kadayawan or the Concert of 400 Voices is a one-and-a-half choral concert serving as grand recital of 15-20 participating choirs. Urog Etnika or the Mindanao-based fashion and floral artists utilizing locally woven fabrics, fibers and accessories, and other materials endemic to Mindanao.
Agongan Ug Kulintangan or the Mindanao Indigenous Music Festival showcases indigenous music and performing skills in playing og agong, kulintang, gabang and other indigenous instruments participated by lumad elders and young enthusiasts of the tribal arts.
The Pasidungog is a culminating program formally recognizing winners of competitive events and festival supporters.
The Tabo or the Agro-Industrial Fair exhibits Mindanao's products, participated in by farmers, plant growers, handicraft producers and manufacturers.
The Indigenous People's Festival is a tribute to the ethnic and Muslim tribes in a presentation of songs, dances and dramatics that display their culture with pride.
The Floricultural Exhibit is a landscape presentation of flowers and ornamentals as well as display of indigenous flora species.
Yanog ug Yugyugan sa Kadalanan is street dancing in various thoroughfares in the city.
The Hiyas sa Kadayawan is a search without gender bias from outstanding personalities with Mindanawon appeal.
But, as expected, only female aspirants joined. The idea of having a beauty contest for both genders hasn't sunk in yet, it seems.
The Suba sa Kinabuhi or the Davao River Festival is an opportunity to present the historical Davao River from which Davao City derived its name. In this parade agricultural, industrial and aquatic products are flaunted on the waters in a procession of gaily decorated boats.
All these activities, coupled by various events organized by entertainment establishments and shopping malls in the city, made Dabawenyos proud of their cultural heritage. The past days saw the successful staging of these activities.

Kadayawan shifts to high gear
By Nelson C. Bagaforo
STARTING Friday, the 21st Kadayawan sa Dabaw celebration shifts to high gear with musical extravaganzas, bar and street parties, and product launchings that feature the country's top celebrities.
And catch your breath, they include FHM's (a men's magazine) sexiest women -- Katrina Halili and Angel Locsin.
It will be an added treat to Dabawenyos who are celebrating the colorful Festival of Festivals with more fun fares.
This time, they have the chance to meet their favorite movie and television stars send in by the country's rival networks -- GMA Network, Inc. and the ABS-CBN Broadcasting Network -- to entertain thousands of revelers.
For partygoers, you can party with these celebrities who will surely taste and see for themselves Davao's nightlife. The city has its own posh resto-bars and other entertainment venues where guests can also enjoy the Dabawenyo hospitality.
Celebrities are expected to arrive Friday, including television host Marc Nelson who will entertain shoppers at SM City Davao starting at 2 p.m. The host of Sports Unlimited is the newest addition to SM Department Store's stable of image models. At Gaisano Mall of Davao, Clair, Fred and Nina of Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition will also stage a show at The Atrium at 3 p.m.
On Friday night, expect the posh Pops Resto Bar in Bajada to be filled with Davao's partyphiles with top bar deejays from Manila and Cebu providing the latest music in bar dancing.
It will be a star-studded Saturday as more performers are coming in, including Halili and Locsin, both Kapuso stars.
The two will lead the Kapuso Day at SM City's Entertainment Plaza, starting at 10 p.m. They will be joined by the sexy Ara Mina and rumored boyfriend Polo Ravales, and young dramatic actor Dennis Trillo.
The five Kapuso stars will entertain shoppers with songs and dances and will sign autograph for their fans.
After which, the Jazz Fusion music and fashion show will follow, featuring Manila artists Tropikasya and Michael Alba at 6 p.m. in the same venue.
The Latin jazz musical presentation will be staged back-to-back with a fashion show featuring Davao's top models and a Manila-based male model.
This will be followed by a street party, dubbed as Jazz Fusion Party Al Fresco, at SM City's Front Covered Walk, featuring the same band Tropikasya. Admission is free.
Also Saturday at Gaisano Mall of Davao, international performer David Pomeranz will stage a mini-concert at the Atrium at 4 p.m. following a variety show that will feature ABS-CBN talent Aiza Marquez at 3 p.m.
At Pops Resto Bar, the party will continue Saturday night with the launch of Globe's 3G. The telecoms company promises a hot and fun-filled party for Davao City's partygoers and media practitioners. Globe's celebrity endorsers are expected to grace the event.
As Dabawenyos conclude the festivities on Sunday, ABS-CBN stables John Lloyd Cruz and Maja Salvador will stage a show at 4 p.m. also at Gaisano Mall's Atrium.
On the same day at SM City, Hale, one of the country's popular bands, will stage a mini-concert at the Entertainment Plaza at 4 p.m.
Davao's shopping malls have, indeed, become partners of the City Government in providing entertainment to Dabawenyos, especially during the staging of Kadayawan.
The Gaisano Mall of Davao kicked off its Kadayawan celebration with Starstruck 3 runner up Iwa Moto, who staged a show at The Atrium last Saturday afternoon.
The young actress, who, at the early stage of her career, has become controversial for being "pasaway," entertained shoppers with songs and dances.
Before Iwa appeared on stage, local band u.no.me. performed a number of songs, included in their debut album "Never Too Late." The group is a fast-rising Davao-born band performing in various entertainment venues in Davao City.

BEAUTY pageants have become part of any celebration in the country such that many consider it as part of the Filipino culture that need to be respected and preserved.
There are different beauty pageants one could join depending on the gender or preference. There are beauty pageants for ladies, women, and even grandmothers just as there are pageants for men and gays. But never has there been a pageant that's open for all sexes and with only one category to compete in.
Thus, this year's Hiyas ng Kadayawan became so controversial because its organizers did just that -- a search that is open for all sexes with the sole winner being declared as the "Hiyas."
As expected this kind of a pageant was frowned upon by many officials especially the masculine. City councilor Jesus Zozobrado claimed to have a nightmare one evening where he saw a man being crowned as "Hiyas ng Kadayawan."
"I cannot reconcile the idea that our Hiyas is a man," Zozobrado during the city council's session. Organizers of the said search however said that Hiyas ng Kadayawan is not a traditional beauty pageant but rather a search for the Festival Gem, some kind of a "spokesmodel" for the Mindanao waving, fashion and floral industries, which Kadayawan is promoting.
"With that in mind, male and female can both compete since they will be judged not really on their physical appearance, but based on how well they can carry themselves and showcase the fashion designs and floral accessories made by our designers and artists," said Patmei Ruivivar, chief of staff of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.
When Hiyas ng Kadayawan started in 1997 (before the passage of the Women Code), Id Acaylar conceptualized it with both male and female contestants. In 1997 and 1998, the Hiyas competition had both male and female contestants and winners. In succeeding years, there were no male contestants who qualified based on the criteria set.
"Thus, it created an impression that the Hiyas is a 'beauty contest' and that only females should be in it," Ruivivar said.
She said negative reactions to this year's Hiyas ng Kadayawan concept just proves the point of gender advocates that "beauty contests do promote gender bias/inequality because only females should join them."
"And when males do have "beauty contests," they are viewed in a derogatory manner," Ruivivar said.
But even Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is said to be not sold on the idea of a male Hiyas. For this, the mayor's office reportedly advised the organizers of the said pageant to exclude male contestants from the pageant.
But instead of just excluding the male contestants from the pageant, the Kadayawan sa Dabaw Foundation, Inc. and the 12 finalists of the 2006 Hiyas sa Kadayawan contest decided not to push through with the pageant this year.
Kadayawan Foundation Board member Id Acaylar said it would be unfair to exclude the current three men aspirants of the Kadayawan contest as such is gender-free but they could also not defy the orders of Duterte, being the mayor and "father of the city."
"We will not defy the direction of the mayor but we don't also want to sacrifice our principles," Acaylar said.
Acaylar's decision not to push through with the Hiyas ng Kadayawan as a matter of principle however irked Duterte. For this Acaylar was made to resign from his post as City Tourism Officer and Kadayawan Foundation co-chair. Acaylar submitted his irrevocable resignation last August 15.
The City Government meanwhile decided to keep on with the holding of Hiyas but this time without the male contestants.
The controversy over the 2006 Hiyas ng Kadayawan created a lot of questions in the mind of the Dabawenyos. Some people say that beauty pageants must now be stopped since it will only lead to the exploitation of the people who joined such.
Others say not only is it exploitative, but dangerous as well especially after a contestant of a beauty pageant search in a university here was burned alive.
Others meanwhile said beauty pageants are a major part of the Filipino revelries. One that should not be banned but rather protected and preserved.
Others say that beauty pageants should not be restricted to females only. As they reasoned out, beauty is not an exclusive property of women. This kind of philosophy is said to be the driving force behind the inclusion of male and even homosexuals in this year's Hiyas ng Kadayawan. They call it gender equality.
We asked women from different sectors on their opinion on the "battle of the sexes" in this year's Hiyas and here are their opinions:
"It's a novel idea, but one which I do not think respects the differences between the sexes. The same criteria for judging grace and poise for example cannot be used on both men and women. Such attributes would have to be embodied differently by the masculine and feminine, unless we celebrate the androgyny of the metrosexual, which I personally don't," said 1997 Mutya ng Davao Jamby Austria-del Rosario.
"I don't see any problem with that, it's not a beauty pageant anyway. It would be a different story if we have a mix gender for Mutya ng Dabaw. That will be the day na sobrang OA na tayo sa gender equality," ABS-CBN Davao's Christie Navacilla said.
"I am a great supporter of equal rights for both sexes. But in the case of Hiyas, I prefer that this be confined to women participants. Despite the global trends, we have not yet reached that comfort zone where you have both sexes competing for a singular beauty title," businesswoman Joji Ilagan-Bian said.
"I see nothing wrong with the contest. Participants have rights to show their wares as long as they do not appear malicious and that they follow the limitations of the law. Hiyas means jewel, so what's the fuss? I see it as a wholesome event to watch," journalist Editha Caduaya said.
"It will take a while for the public to get accustomed to a gender-free pageant. There should have been a Mr. And Ms. Kadayawan, not a merged pageantry in which we force an issue and let a woman win in the end anyway," said journalist Joji Alcantara.
Many said that Acaylar and his team's objective in making Hiyas gender-free is a laudable effort. Maybe in the future, this idea would be more acceptable. But, it just is not at the present time.
Ruivivar said that if she will have her way, she would opt for the highlighting of the "Urog Etnika", wherein the Hiyas search is but a component, in such a way that it would be more embracing of our diverse peoples and cultures.
"I would like to see models who represent the real people of Davao and Mindanao in all shapes and sizes (after all, we are not all 6-footers with 23-inch waistlines). I would also like to discourage the promotion of a particular standard of "beauty," which is generally unrealistic for the majority of women who do not all look like Margie Moran or Juliana Palermo.
And I would like the celebration of all kinds of beauty, instead of a competition among women," she said.
After all, the use of beautiful young women as "symbols of abstract ideals" is never a Filipino or Dabawenyo tradition. It was traced to ancient Europe where symbolic queens for May Day and other festivities were held.
Ruivivar said beauty contests in their present form started in America to promote business and sell products. Even before then, public protests were already held against such practice. Even middle class society shunned them.
It was only after World War II when beauty pageants became "respectable" when beauty queens were recruited to sell bonds and entertain troops.
"Clearly, that is not a Filipino nor a Dabawenyo tradition that should be promoted and preserved. Indigenous and Muslim women -- the natives of Davao --held great power and did not have to use their faces and bodies to sell products or promote business," Ruivivar said.
No less than Mayor Duterte understands and even shares the gender advocates' stand on beauty contests. During the meeting of the women leaders with Duterte on July 31, 2006 at Grand Men Seng, the mayor said: "I am with you on this issue. I owe it to my mother and my daughters. I do believe that there are beauty contests, which exploit and humiliate women and I do not like that.
However, as the Mayor, I have to look at all sides and base my official actions on what is constitutional and legal. I cannot just impose my own personal views on the City, I must be bound by the legal framework."
The City Council also reached a consensus not to ban beauty contests, but simply to regulate them, as provided in the Women Code.
Councilor Mabel Acosta suggested an amendment to the Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) of the Women Code to include securing of permit by organizers of beauty contests from the Mayor's Office and for IGDD to evaluate their objectives, program, and criteria for judging before granting the permit.
And strict monitoring of such contests to make sure that women are not exploited or humiliated. This however does not end the great debate on beauty contests. This is just the beginning.

EVERY time the Kadayawan sa Dabaw comes around, all roads lead to Davao City as the event--a celebration for bountiful harvest--not only attracts people from other parts of the Philippines but also lures visitors from all over the world.
The entire month of August is one remarkable moment for the people of Davao, from government officials to ordinary citizens, as a series of activities are being held to give excitement to every Dabawenyo and, of course, local and foreign guests who venture their way to every nook and cranny of the city just to have fun.
This is also the time for the Davao athletes and those from other parts of the country to showcase their skills as Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte has made it sure that sports will be one of the activities to highlight the Kadayawan festival.
This year is no different from the previous years. City sports coordinator Christopher "Bong" Go revealed that nearly P600,000 has been allocated by City Hall for sports alone in this year's Kadayawan. The budget will be used to organize tournaments in 16 events, which are scattered in different venues.
Some of the events had already been concluded while others like basketball, the centerpiece event of this year's Kadayawan, are still ongoing.
Giving the athletes a chance to display their skills and allow them to compete against the best is a top priority of the Duterte administration.
"We have lined up quite a number of sports activities as part of the Kadayawan Festival not just to spice up the celebrations, but to give again an avenue for our young athletes to hone their skills," Go said.
"We are glad to inform you that Mayor Duterte has approved of the various events because we provide our Davao athletes another venue for them to test their abilities and calibrate what is needed for their improvement," Go added.
Athletes from other parts of the country usually come around to participate during the Kadayawan, giving quality competition in every arena.
The sports activities actually rolled off with the bowling tournament in the last week of July at the Dover Lanes and will end with the softball event, which will conclude on September 10 at the University of Mindanao Matina campus.
Cycling, chess, football, dama, volleyball, billiards, swimming, boxing, dancesports, tennis, sepak takraw and kararedo are also being held in various venues.
There are also water sports to spice up the Kadayawan like kayaking, motorboat racing and fishing.
Basketball is easily the main event of this year's sports festivities, with top commercial teams from the neighboring provinces and Visayas coming over to Davao to give the fans good basketball.
M. Lhuillier MP Kwarta Padala of Cebu, Ozamiz City, Digos-Montaña, Pacman-Gensan and host Duterte Agilas saw action in a four-day tournament at the Almendras gym that was filled to the rafters every playing day.
Local cage fans who have been dying to again see quality basketball had a grand time throughout the tournament. Even Mayor Duterte made himself available during the opening to welcome the participants.
Elsewhere, in other sports events, the Davao athletes compete for glory, and there's no stopping them from scaling greater heights in the field of sports. Davao City, after all, is not only known for its durian and waling-waling. This is also the place where Southeast Asian Games triple gold medal winner in diving Shiela Mae Perez comes from.

The show goes on
THIS year's celebration of the Kadayawan sa Dabaw Festival is definitely the most memorable and colorful festival for the last 21 years. The celebration is hounded by different intrigues and controversies just two days before the festival officially started.
First, Hiyas sa Kadayawan '06 committee chairperson Oscar G. Casaysay resigned from his post after being slighted when he was ordered by City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte to remove the male contestants from the contest.
Second, the Hiyas sa Dabaw contest was cancelled after the Kadayawan sa Dabaw Foundation, Inc. and the nine female Hiyas finalists decided not to push through with the said contest after learning that the three male finalists are to be eliminated as ordered by the city mayor. Tears fell from the female finalists with the "sacrifice" they have to make for the sake of gender-sensitivity and unity.
Third, Tourism Operations Officer Id Acaylar, who is a member of the Kadayawan Foundation, voluntarily resigned from his post after the mayor advised him to.
With all the controversies, conflict, resignations, one can't help but ask, is there still something to celebrate? The answer is a big yes, according to the organizers themselves.
Kadayawan sa Dabaw Foundation, Inc. president Tina Dotimas said celebrating the Kadayawan Festival is relevant to the economy of the city and in building a positive image of the city.
Acaylar said it will always be relevant to celebrate the Kadayawanas as shown by the people's common beginning.
He said, through the celebration, the people's culture is preserved and remembered.
Dotimas also said the festival is one way of promoting the city to the world.
"If you have noticed, most of the companies, establishments or groups in Mindanao or even sa labas would coincide their events in time for the Kadayawan," Dotimas said.
Based on the official list of Kadayawan activities, there are only 16 official events, these are the Tabo-Agro Industrial Trade Fair, Kaan Dawet-Street Food Fiesta, Pasalamat-Mass and Opening Rites, Tingog Kadayawan- Concert of 400 Voices, Hiyas sa Kadayawan-The Festival Symbol, Urog-Etnika-Mindanao Fashion Showcase, Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan-Street Dancing, Halad-Floral Float Parade and eight others.
But, the list of activities reached until 50 as groups and private establishments have also enlisted their events in time for the Kadayawan.
Among them is the Ikebana International Exhibit, USA Kadayawan Balik Davao Dinner Dance for a Cause, 2nd Global PWU-PWC Alumni Congress, RMN Kadayawan Pop Fiesta, Castrol Kadayawan Motorcross Competition, David Pomeranze Concert, MUZIKLABAN and many others.
Davao Convention and Visitors Cooperative Bureau vice-chair Art Boncato has confirmed the statement of Dotimas saying that August has become the peak month for travel and tourism in the city because a lot of people are coming into the city to witness the celebration.
"They know that they can get a premium because of the Kadayawan so a lot of groups, organizations would want to plan their meetings and events around the Kadayawan period," Boncato said in a separate interview.
According to Boncato, there are a total of 2,900 rooms in all hotels in the city. During the festival, these hotels enjoy a 90 to 100 percent occupancy.
"Regularly, there is only a 50-70 percent of occupation in hotels," he said.
With it, Boncato, who is also the vice chair of the Davao City Tourism Council, said celebrating the festival has helped the city become a tourist destination.
"Holding a festival sends positive messages. We have created a very good name for Davao because of the festival. Kadayawan has been a reputation itself already. In fact, it's position now is the festival of all festival," Boncato said.
According to him, the festival paved way for the participation of provinces in the Mindanao to participate and showcase their own culture, and songs and dances.
Boncato said the city's tourism has constantly improved as years passed because of the festival. (BRQ)

By Barbara Carla R. Quiero
A 23-YEAR-old BS Economics graduate of the University of the Philippines is this year's "Hiyas ng Kadayawan."
Kristine Grace Maambong was crowned during the search's grand finals and coronation night at SM Entertainment Plaza Wednesday.
Maambong advises girls who want to join the Hiyas sa Kadayawan to have a desire to improve, persevere to succeed, and just "be yourself."
She went home P50,000 richer and is now city's ambassadress of goodwill who will promote not only the city, but the whole of Mindanao.
The 5'8" Dabawenya, who prefers to be called Kitten, bested eight other finalists who competed for the coveted crown.
She was crowned by City Legal Officer Melchor V. Quitain and Susan Antipuesto, the new Hiyas sa Kadayawan 2006 Committee chairperson.
"All my life I've been wanting to be a greater influence to others and I think I've achieved that tonight," Maambong said.
As the newly crowned Hiyas, Maambong said her advocacy is empowering the youth -- being the leaders of the next generation.
Nancy Blanco, who is from Zamboanga City, won the Hiyas ng Samsung award. She received a 21-inch colored television set.
Eleonor Albaladejo, a professional model who has already modeled all over Asia, won the Ms. Allure title.
The three male finalists who were subsequently dropped from the competition still modeled for their designers.
The floral bouquet made by Elizabeth Gonzales, the grand winner of the Urog Etnika Floral Bouquet contest, was modeled by Christian George Morales.
The panel of judges included Angie Corro of the Manila Bulletin, Gerald Duremdes of Samsung, Linnie Palacio of the Waterfront Insular Hotel, Neil Oropesa of Oroderm, Eusebio Avanceña of USAid, lawyer Rolly Dumalag of the Kadayawan Foundation and former Ms. Universe Margie Moran-Floirendo.

Kadayawan shifts to high gear
By Nelson C. Bagaforo
STARTING Friday, the 21st Kadayawan sa Dabaw celebration shifts to
high gear with musical extravaganzas, bar and street parties, and
product launchings that feature the country's top celebrities.
And catch your breath, they include FHM's (a men's magazine) sexiest
women -- Katrina Halili and Angel Locsin.
It will be an added treat to Dabawenyos who are celebrating the
colorful Festival of Festivals with more fun fares.
This time, they have the chance to meet their favorite movie and
television stars send in by the country's rival networks -- GMA
Network, Inc. and the ABS-CBN Broadcasting Network -- to entertain
thousands of revelers.
For partygoers, you can party with these celebrities who will surely
taste and see for themselves Davao's nightlife. The city has its own
posh resto-bars and other entertainment venues where guests can also
enjoy the Dabawenyo hospitality.
Celebrities are expected to arrive Friday, including television host
Marc Nelson who will entertain shoppers at SM City Davao starting at
2 p.m. The host of Sports Unlimited is the newest addition to SM
Department Store's stable of image models. At Gaisano Mall of Davao,
Clair, Fred and Nina of Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition will also
stage a show at The Atrium at 3 p.m.
On Friday night, expect the posh Pops Resto Bar in Bajada to be
filled with Davao's partyphiles with top bar deejays from Manila and
Cebu providing the latest music in bar dancing.
It will be a star-studded Saturday as more performers are coming in,
including Halili and Locsin, both Kapuso stars.
The two will lead the Kapuso Day at SM City's Entertainment Plaza,
starting at 10 p.m. They will be joined by the sexy Ara Mina and
rumored boyfriend Polo Ravales, and young dramatic actor Dennis
Trillo.
The five Kapuso stars will entertain shoppers with songs and dances
and will sign autograph for their fans.
After which, the Jazz Fusion music and fashion show will follow,
featuring Manila artists Tropikasya and Michael Alba at 6 p.m. in the
same venue.
The Latin jazz musical presentation will be staged back-to-back with
a fashion show featuring Davao's top models and a Manila-based male
model.
This will be followed by a street party, dubbed as Jazz Fusion Party
Al Fresco, at SM City's Front Covered Walk, featuring the same band
Tropikasya. Admission is free.
Also Saturday at Gaisano Mall of Davao, international performer David
Pomeranz will stage a mini-concert at the Atrium at 4 p.m. following
a variety show that will feature ABS-CBN talent Aiza Marquez at 3
p.m.
At Pops Resto Bar, the party will continue Saturday night with the
launch of Globe's 3G. The telecoms company promises a hot and fun-
filled party for Davao City's partygoers and media practitioners.
Globe's celebrity endorsers are expected to grace the event.
As Dabawenyos conclude the festivities on Sunday, ABS-CBN stables
John Lloyd Cruz and Maja Salvador will stage a show at 4 p.m. also at
Gaisano Mall's Atrium.
On the same day at SM City, Hale, one of the country's popular bands,
will stage a mini-concert at the Entertainment Plaza at 4 p.m.
Davao's shopping malls have, indeed, become partners of the City
Government in providing entertainment to Dabawenyos, especially
during the staging of Kadayawan.
The Gaisano Mall of Davao kicked off its Kadayawan celebration with
Starstruck 3 runner up Iwa Moto, who staged a show at The Atrium last
Saturday afternoon.
The young actress, who, at the early stage of her career, has become
controversial for being "pasaway," entertained shoppers with songs
and dances.
Before Iwa appeared on stage, local band u.no.me. performed a number
of songs, included in their debut album "Never Too Late." The group
is a fast-rising Davao-born band performing in various entertainment
venues in Davao City.

Main streets closed to traffic for Indak, Floral Float parade
THE Traffic Management Center (TMC) will block major thoroughfares starting at noon Saturday until Sunday afternoon in downtown area for the Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan and the Halad-Floral Float Parade.
Closed to traffic are the Ponciano Reyes St., C.M. Recto Avenue, Bonifacio, Legaspi, and San Pedro Streets, and Magsaysay Avenue.
Public utility drivers are allowed to seek out their own routes in the meantime.
"Drivers can pass through open routes wherever they want, we will not apprehend them. But that does not mean that those with a Buhangin franchise will be allowed to ply the Talomo route, for example," Gempesaw said in a phone interview Friday.
TMC has been fielding its people full force since Friday last week.
"I instructed my personnel not to leave their assigned post. They will even be given meal assistance so that they will not have to leave their posts," he said.
He added that TMC supervisors will also patrolling the downtown area to check of the flow of traffic.

GMA television network gets permit for Kadayawan
By Nelson C. Bagaforo
GMA Network Inc. has finally secured a permit from City Hall to set up its state-of-the-art equipment that could feed live the culminating activities of the Kadayawan sa Davao starting Saturday until Sunday.
GMA 7 secured the permit from the Business Bureau. "We got it (necessary permit) last Tuesday," GMA 7 Davao manager Mariles Puentevella said in a press conference Friday.
For this, GMA-7 can set up its equipment at vantage spots at parade and competition grounds for a better coverage of the culminating activities and feed them live not only in the country but also to the world through GMA Pinoy TV.
In the wake of this development, GMA News vowed a comprehensive live coverage of today's "Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan" and tomorrow's floral float parade.
To ensure top-quality live feeds, Rikki Escudero, GMA News and Public Affairs assistant vice president and regional television head, said they will be using their SNG (Satellite News Gathering)-Advent equipment set-up.
"It's the very same broadcast equipment the network used to transmit clear and crisp video feeds directly from Mt. Everest base camp in June," she said.
She said it will only be for the third time the network is using the modern equipment.
"The first was the Mt. Everest coverage, then the Pangasinan flashfloods and the Kadayawan sa Dabaw," she said.
Escudero said they will also pre-empt GMA's programming on Sunday morning from 8-11 a.m. in Davao City to give way for the live coverage of the colorful floral float parade.
"For the first time we will have a comprehensive coverage of Kadayawan. We want to show to the world how colorful and unique this festival is. We will give them the sights and sounds unique to Kadayawan," she said.
Updates of the events will also be reported live on GMA's Flash Report. There will be roundups this afternoon after Startalk and tomorrow afternoon after SOP.
"So expect a lot of viewers because both shows, Startalk and SOP, are both top ratings, especially in Mega Manila," she said.
Reports have it that the war between GMA and ABS-CBN has spilled over to Kadayawan as the two giant stations fought who will be given the right to cover the festival highlights.
But Escudero said: "This is not a network war. We believe Kadayawan is for everybody. It is a festival that everyone should enjoy."
Such controversy has worsened when giant networks GMA-7 and ABS-CBN were dragged into the controversial resignation of Acaylar as city tourism officer.
Escudero explained they have nothing to do with Acaylar's resignation, saying the former City Hall official was "very good... very open to us."
Acaylar was asked to resign by Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte after he called for press conference announcing the scrapping of Hiyas sa Kadayawan.
Duterte earlier asked Acaylar to exclude male contestants from the search.

Indak set Saturday
BANKEROHAN barangay captain Edgar Ibuyan urge Dabawenyos to go out in the streets Saturday to witness and enjoy the Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan contest starting at noon.
Ibuyan, who chairs the Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan 2006 committee said this year's contest has seven new groups participating although the total is five less than last year's.
This year's new entries are the Philippine Women's College of Davao; Padang-Padang Festival of Parang, Maguindanao; Baranyong National High School of Barayong Magsaysay, Davao del Sur; Phoenix Pop Squad of Mintal High School; Helobung Lake Sebu of the Davao City National High School; Indak Kabataan of Digos City and Davao Medical Center with Pope John Paul II of Davao City.
"Even if the event is covered by television networks and you see it on TV, it's better experienced live. Your visitors will really enjoy it," Ibuyan said in an interview Friday.
Ibuyan said there are only a total of 27 participating groups, five less than last year's 32.
There are still several groups from outside the city who are joining, including, the Sambulayang Cultural Dance Troup from Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao; Sinagtala Dance Troup from Cotabato City; Tribong Dumingonon from Dumingag, Zamboanga del Sur; Surigao del Norte Provincial Cultural Contingent and several others.
Davao City-based groups include the Tribong Alta from Trading Boulevard; Malabog National High School from Malabog, Paquibato; Manglayadan Dance Troup from Tibungco and Magallanes Elementary School, which is the defending champion.
They will be judged for their choreography and creativity, execution, audience impact/participation, visual impact and music.
Mayet Ibuyan, co-chairperson of the Kadayawan committee, said the panel of judges will be composed by professional choreographers.
The grand winner will bring home P500,000 and trophy, first runner-up with P300,000 and trophy, second runner-up with P150,000 and trophy, third runner-up with P75,000 and trophy and fourth runner-up with P50,000. (BRQ)
