Davao students learn about conservation in first Asian bird fair

By Anna Valmero

DAVAO CITY, DAVAO DEL SUR - Grade Six students CJ Taglao and Angel Rose Diganow now see birds as more than just house pets after attending lectures during the first Asian Bird Festival held here.

CJ and Angel, together with some 1,700 elementary students, learned a lot about the importance of keeping the birds in the wild and what young kids like them can do to take care of birds in their natural habitats.

The event was organized by the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines (WBCP).

The Philippines is among 17 countries that hold majority of the earth’s terrestrial bird species, as identified by the World Conservation Monitoring Center of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).

There are more than 600 different species of birds in the Philippines, some 200 of these endemic or can only be found in the country. In 2004, Carmela Española, a Filipino wildlife biologist and WBCP member, discovered the latest bird specie in the country, the Calayan rail.

“Mabuti na may Asian bird festival dito ngayon para malaman ng ibang tao yung mga isyu at matulungan natin yung bird conservation (I think holding the first Asian bird festival here is very helpful in raising the awareness on issues and to help bird conservation efforts),” says CJ, while I chatted with him as he was viewing the photo exhibit by the Philippine Wild Bird Photographers (PWBP).

“Mas maganda na simulan naming mga kabataan na malaman kung bakit dapat hayaan natin ang mga ibon sa labas at hindi nakakulong. Pag inalagaan natin sila, mae-enjoy natin na makita silang lumilipad at hindi sila magiging extinct (It is important that students and the youth like us are aware of these conservation issues so that we will know how to take care of birds in their natural habitats. If we take efforts to conserve and preserve their species, we can enjoy watching them in the wild and they will not become extinct),” says Angel.

WBCP is a nonprofit organization that raises conservation issues through bird watching, said Alice Villa-Real, chairperson of the Asian Bird Festival.

Villa-Real taught the students the basics of bird watching. She says people in Mindanao are lucky because the region is home to numerous endemic species that cannot be seen elsewhere in the world.

Davao, in particular, is home to the Philippine eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi).

Hong Kong birdwatchers ignore embassy warnings to “help save the environment”
By Germelina Lacorte | Sunday| September 26, 2010 | Filed under: Environment, Protection/Conservation, Top Stories

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/25 September) — Ignoring their government’s advisory against visiting the Philippines, Hong Kong birdwatchers are in Davao for the 1st Asian Bird Fair, claiming they are on a mission for the environment.

“Bird watching is no pure enjoyment,” said Samson So, 27, a member of the Hong Kong Bird Watching Society. “It is also a mission to protect and conserve environment.”

Shum Ting Wing, who calls himself “Bond,” said more people in Hong Kong are increasingly interested in protecting the environment but natural habitats are still being threatened every time new highways are built.

They said some friends discouraged them from coming to the Philippines after the hostage-taking tragedy that took the lives of eight Hong Kong tourists in Manila in August but they said they were determined to come for their “mission.”

So said he chose to ignore the “advice of one person,” referring to the Hong Kong embassy, against the “greater interest” of protecting the environment.

Shum and So were two of three Hong Kong birdwatchers who joined Asia’s first Bird Fair and 6th Philippine Bird Festival, which opened at the Waterfront Hotel on Friday, September 24 and will end on Sunday with a tour to bird watching sites in Eden and Malagos.

At least 18 foreign birdwatchers and conservationists from Nepal, Burma, Thailand, Taiwan and the United Kingdom, joined close to 300 participants in the festival organized by the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines.

“Birds are good indicators of the health of the environment,” said So, “Through bird watching, we can promote the importance of conservation. Where we can see a large number of birds means that the ecosystem is still healthy.”

He said the Hong Kong Bird Watching Society lobbied in 2004 against the conversion of Hong Kong’s Long Valley marshland into a railway station and won. Shum said the government was forced to build the railway underground to appease the environment group’s lobby against the destruction of the 25-hectare marshland, which is the habitat of over 200 species of birds.

From Hongkong and Taiwan to Burma, Thailand and Nepal, bird watchers shared a common concern over the destruction of bird habitats because of the entry of plantations, illegal logging, and even large-scale environment disasters such as climate change.

Htin Hla of the Biodiversity and Nature conservation Association, also said his group had lobbied for the declaration of an area in Tenintharyi Division in Burma as a sanctuary for the bird Gurney’s Pitta, an endangered species of bird in Thailand. Hla said there were only 12 pairs of Gurney’s Pitta left in Thailand but in 2003, the birds were discovered in Tenintharyi Division in Burma. When his group lobbied for the declaration of the site into a natural sanctuary to protect the birds, the government turned down the proposal, saying the area has already been reserved for an oil palm plantation.

Hla said he is hopeful that the upcoming elections in Burma in November will bring about change that will augur well for their conservation works.

In Nepal, climate change has brought about changes in the behavior of birds, said Hum Gurung, chief executive officer of the Bird Conservation Nepal. He said snow coming from the mountains has been melting rapidly, swelling the rivers and destroying the habitats of river birds. Changes in weather pattern are also changing the behavior of birds. Before they used to wait for the Sarus crane to come down the mountain to signal the change of the season and the time for the Nepalese village people to plant rice but now the bird often gets delayed and sometimes does not show up at all. “Because of climate change, birds are shifting habitats,” he said.

Among the endemic species of birds displayed by Filipino wildlife photographers in an exhibit here were the cattle egret sighted in San Juan, Batangas, the Mindanao Tarictic Hornbill photographed by Kaakbay’s Alain Pascua in Bislig, Surigao del Sur and the Philippine Frogmouth, photographed by Rey Sta Ana also in Bislig, Surigao del Sur.

So and Shum said they look forward to seeing the birds in Malagos. “We’re interested to see where the birds live but we also want to find out what they need,” said So. (Germelina Lacorte/MindaNews)

Food terminal a top priority project
Monday, 27 September 2010 00:00
PDF
by Lorie Ann A. Cascaro

Along with farm-to-market roads and tourism development, a food terminal project is one of the top three priority projects of the city government in the next three years.
Officer-in-charge of the Davao City Investment Promotion Center, Jason Magnaye, mentioned the government’s support for this project in a recent business forum at SM City Davao. The Regional Development Council 11 adopted this as the priority infrastructure needed to further develop industry clusters in the region.
Considered as urgent by both the government and private sectors, the establishment of a food exchange complex in Davao is seen to benefit the region and other provinces in Mindanao.
Ramon Allado, an engineer and chairman of the Southern Philippines Construction Core Group (SPCCG), presented the proposed Davao Food Exchange Complex Project during the regional economic managers’ briefing last September 16 at The Marco Polo Davao.
Also present at the briefing were Robert C. Quinto, president of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc (DCCCII), Sec. Cesar V. Purisima of the Department of Finance, DDG Rolando G. Tungpalan of the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA), Deputy Governor Diwa Guinigundo of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, Sec. Jose Rene Almendras of the Department of Energy, Chair Vicente T. Lao of the Mindanao Business Council, Chair Stephen Antig of the PhilExport Davao Chapter, and Chair Samuel Matunog of the Regional MSMED Council.
A public private partnership (PPP), the Davao food exchange complex project involves the NDC, Davao City local government unit (LGU), and the SPCCG representing the private sector as proponents. Supporting institutions are the DCCCII, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), NEDA, Department of Agriculture (DA), and Davao Constructors Association Center, Inc. (DCACI).
The proponents of this project agree that there is a need to open more opportunities for the expansion of agri-based businesses through an agri-industrial estate in the Davao region.
This project includes the transformation of a 25-hectare area in Daliao, Toril, Davao City, which is owned by the National Development Company (NDC), into an economic zone and the setting up of appropriate facilities for food-based industries and their allied service providers.
This area, according to Magnaye, has informal settlers who will be part of the project as labor force. As proposed, the LGU will spearhead the social preparation activities and assist the relocation of the informal settlers.
The LGU has already fulfilled its commitment to prepare the area for development by providing off-site infrastructure such as access to utilities and farm-to-market roads leading to the site. Interested locators were already identified with projects in poultry, fruit processing, agri processing, and cold storage facilities.
Identified support services providers include the DCACI, member of the Philippine Constructors Association (PCA), to provide support by including the complex in their “Ready-to-Go” projects, and assist in sourcing through Official Development Assistance (ODA). The DA also will provide logistics for the consolidation or “bagsakan” area.
Included in the project proposal is for the DTI and NDC to explore the possibility of entering into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Davao City government and private sector stakeholders and organize a steering committee or task force to focus on institutional building and monitoring the project’s progress.
Teolulo T. Pasawa, director of the DTI-Davao City Field Office, informed Edge Davao that the MOU signing between the DTI and the NDC will be done hopefully before the year ends.

Davao region tops in banana production, says DA
(http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&r=&y=&mo=&fi=p100928.htm&no=03)
By Rose B. Palacio

Davao City (28 September) -- Davao region attained the highest production area and volume in banana in 2009 of 86,302 hectares and 3,749,766 MT respectively. Last year's (2009) volume of production grew by 3.74% over 2008 volume.

"We were able to export more than 1.6 million MT of bananas," said Assistant Secretary of Agriculture, Edilberto M. de luna (who represented DA Secretary Proceso J. Alcala) during the 7th Mindanao Fruit Industry Conference last week held at Molave hotel.

ASEC de Luna, in his speech said that in as far as pineapple is concerned, we have an existing production area of 58,823 hectares that produced a volume of 2,198,497 MT. Northern Mindanao attained the highest production area and volume in 2009 of 20,847 hectares and 1,026,905 MT respectively, he said.

In as far as durian is concerned; our country has an existing production area of 18,669 hectares that has produced a volume of 55,727 MT. The 2009 volume of production grew by 8.42% over 2008 volume.

The lack of baseline information on durian industry has prevented growers to join the export business. Another concern is the insufficient number of trading posts.

In as far as mangosteen is concerned, ARMM has the highest production volume in 2009 which totaled to 558 MT or about 36% of the total national production volume.

ASEC de Luna said that "for mangosteen, we just need to expand cultivation areas to increase production."

The production of pomelo (in 2009) slid further by 6.05% over the 2008 volume. Davao region has the highest production volume in 2009 which totaled to 15,979 MT or about 46% of the total national production volume.

Other issues need to be addressed for the pomelo industry is the presence of pests and diseases and the need for a proper technology package for pomelo orchard management.

ASEC de Luna said that Secretary Alcala wants that our farmers and fishermen will be self-reliant in every region. We will come up with concrete steps for the Mindanao's Fruit Industry. We aim not only to produce more, but open up local and international markets to have greater profit and livelihood opportunities for fruit growers and traders, he added.

The Mindanao Fruit Industry conference is a yearly event organized by the Minfruit Council which gathers all important stakeholders of the local fruit industry.

President of Minfruit Council is Atty. Antonio Partoza Jr.; chairman of the Davao del Norte Fruit Industry Dev't Council is Faustino Salting; and the Chairman of PAFC-Compostela Valley is Eliseo Tan. (PIA XI)

(PIA XI)

Birdwatchers flock to Davao

Children watch wild geese displayed at the first Asian bird fair in Davao City over the weekend. The two-day fair was held to highlight awareness among the people the need to protect wildlife as an important component in the ecosystem. AFP

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews) -- Ignoring their government’s advisory against visiting the Philippines, Hong Kong birdwatchers are in Davao for the 1st Asian Bird Fair, claiming they are on a mission for the environment.

“Bird watching is no pure enjoyment,” said Samson So, 27, a member of the Hong Kong Bird Watching Society. “It is also a mission to protect and conserve environment.” Shum Ting Wing, who calls himself “Bond,” said more people in Hong Kong are increasingly interested in protecting the environment but natural habitats are still being threatened every time new highways are built.

Germelina Lacorte/MindaNews

Matina barangay becomes
model for good performance

Is there a barangay that has consistently performed well? Is there a local government unit (LGU) that has earned constant recognition for its delivery of basic services?

In Davao City, that may well be Matina Crossing 74.

Not too long ago, barangay Matina Crossing was awarded the Most Outstanding Barangay of Davao City under the former leadership of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte. The same accolade was extended by ABS-CBN and the Davao City Jaycees Inc. It bested 182 other Barangays of Davao City.

The last time it happened, barangay chairman Joel Santes received the special citation right after the flag raising ceremonies at City Hall. It was witnessed by hundreds of government employees.

But barangay Matina Crossing has always been low-key, despite having many “firsts” and unique initiative programs.

One of these is the creation of Community Volunteers Against Crime and Calamities (CVACC), the only one of its kind in the country. This program encourages citizens’ participation on peace-keeping, which augments the city’s peace and order program. Santes says “it is basically as a preemptive support mechanism of law enforcers,” serving as information-disseminators to the public regarding public policies, laws and regulations, and as community educators to individuals and families.

The CVACC program does not mainly dwell on the security of the community. Rather, it focuses on getting residents actively involved in disaster preparedness to effectively respond to calamities.

The CVACC is the purveyor of the Ecological Solid Waste Management, and in the prevention and reduction of juvenile delinquency within the barangay. This is coupled with providing protection to minors along with the Barangay Council for the Protection of Children.

In all of Davao City, it is only barangay Matina Crossing that has acquired a fairly-equipped ambulance; a multi-cab police mobile patrol, three fabricated tricycle mobile patrols; and a dump truck—all acquired solely out of its barangay funds.

On its advocacies, the barangay has actively campaigned on global warming and climate change, and launched relevant environmental projects. In its “clean and green program,” a functional Materials Recovery facility or MRF was established with the continuous promotion and propagation of backyard composting and vegetable gardening.

All these were launched in addition to the Purok Malinis Program which eventually gave birth to a periodic search of the Modelong Purok/Residente sa Kalikasan at Kalusugan. The regular search has adopted the theme “Magtanim at Maglinis Ugaliin,” which reflects the barangay’s commitment to health and the environment.

Barangay Matina Crossing has acquired its own land where its four-story building is located. Santes had coughed out P272,000 from the local funds to put up the down payment deposited to the Land Bank, to purchase the prime 1,269 sq. m. lot. The land acquisition was completed after tedious legal expropriation proceedings wherein the Regional Trial court XI and the city government decided in its favor.

With the support of 13 other barangays of Talomo District, Santes established a District Center adjacent to the Barangay Hall. This serves as a “One-Stop-Shop” wherein district offices of the government are to be established in the barangay.

Meanwhile, the District Offices of the City Treasurer, the CSSDO, the DILG and the City Agriculture Office render services at the old barangay hall that is still owned by the barangay which is just 200 meters away from the new one.

The new Barangay Hall represents a showcase of effective public service and governance. It houses the Botika sa Barangay ; a medical and dental clinic; a repository of cases in a library of its multi-award winning Lupong Tagapamayapa, a barangay justice body that was awarded twice as the most outstanding in Region XI and in Davao City respectively; the Barangay Matina Emergency Unit (BMEU) with its ambulance and two fire trucks; the Sangguniang Kabataan Office; the Barangay Planning and Development Unit and a livelihood Training Center.

In the same Barangay Hall are housed the Population Commission and the City Social Services, which cater not only to the needs of the barangay residents but also those of the 13 other barangays of Talomo District.

A comprehensive assistance program on the development of the youth, women and elderly is also being planned and initiated here.

Barangay Matina Crossing, in partnership with World Vision International, a global non-government organization, has also been conducting an anti-tuberculosis awareness and treatment campaign since August of 2008.

In addition, there is a Barangay Burial Assistance program for indigents and a Barangay Educational Assistance Program for deserving elementary and high school students.

There is also a “Barangay Lingap” program which provides medical and financial assistance to indigent patients of Matina. All these programs are solely financed by barangay funds.

The barangay has its self-initiated rice distribution project as a licensee of the National Food Authority along with its gulayan advocacy, in addition to the short term alleviation of the people’s daily food needs.

Santes says his barangay has “greatly contributed to the government’s effort to create more jobs.” In fact, he says, many have already worked while many others have traveled and worked abroad because of the barangay’s skills development program.

In partnership with the University of the Southeastern Philippines (USeP), the barangay is conducting skills trainings covering a wide variety of courses with accreditation from TESDA. The students earn an NCII Certification after they pass the assessment of TESDA. These trainings have produced 169 graduates since it stated in 2009. Welding courses have also been taught in the training centers.

As gleaned from its many milestones, Bgy. Matina Crossing certainly deserves its accolades and shows the way for other LGUs to render sincere public service especially to the poor. Tony Teves

If only we could get rid of the electrical posts and bury the wires underground these beautiful pics would have been much nicer.

Talking about overhead ugly wires?why don't we include the ugly posts they're hanging on?some of theses wires are'nt even functioning anymore.i bet some DCTS telephone wires are still up there and of course cable TV wires.the problem in the Philippines is that if you put up wires up there then you have to erect a post as well(if you notice the posts are not uniform and some of them are leaning precariously).result-posts and wires, thousands of them. utilities companies should be oblige to maintain them well.

YELLOW GATE ADVENTURE RESORT: Marilog, Davao City

The Place
Welcome to the newest adventure resort and zipline place in Davao City. Yellow Gate Adventure Resort also known as Santo Ñino of the Woods opened last May 2010. The resort was owned and managed by Babao Estate Development Corporation. Currently the place offers a two way zip line; which was one of the most safest zip ride since it's technical consultants were Eric Bontuyan and Bojun Bagayas; both known for their expertise concerning technical outdoor facilities. As as added factor of observing International Standards mostly of the equipments used were PETZL, a leading manufacturer of climbing and work-at-height equipment for mountaineering, climbing, caving and professional sector. The Zipline was 360 and 320 meters long and has a height of 100-150 meters. Unlike the Lake Sebu Zip Line, on which the rider was flying like superman, this ride tends to be diffrent because we were hanged on the harness and which was way better for me because you could make a 360 view of the environment.

http://img543.imageshack.us/img543/138/dsc01270o.jpg (http://img543.imageshack.us/i/dsc01270o.jpg/)

The 28 hectares of forested hills also offers a caving experience. You can even request for their beautiful and simple daughter Nique [15 years old] to serve as your guide. It was mentioned that there had been already 5 caves being discovered. In the resort you can also do wildlife observation, hiking, trekking, mountain biking, conduct adventure race or simply lied down on the grass or sit at the garden and feel the cold climate as it touches your skin. Be serenade and relax of the ambiance the place has to offer as this will help you forget the city life pressures even for just a day.

Just infront and both sides of the rest house one can pitch a tent. Around the area was a kiosk, a fish pond, a children amenities like the seasaw and slide, a big rock on where you can post as having the clouds and mountains serve as your background. The place could not be reach anymore by Davao Lights, but that's not a problem because the place has it's own generator enough to supply the entire rest house and it's main surroundings. Not only that, since the rest house was located on one of the coolest place in Davao City it has a fireplace which could be used during very cool and foggy climate. In addition to that, before the year ends either Davao Light or Cotabato electric company will supply the electricity in the area.

Additional Information:
The resort is operated by Project Manager - Bojun Bagayas, who is currently the President of the Philippine Specological Society and consider as an expert caver. There's no doubt that in the future years a lot or more caves could be discovered within the place. On the other hand, the technical crew of the resort were highly trained by Eric Bontuyan,a Swiss-trained mountain guide instructor, Rock 1 and 2 and Bush 1 Instructor of New Zealand Outdoor Instructors Association. He owns the Viajero Outdoor Centre in Cagayan de Oro City. He is also a Kayak 1 Instructor of the British Canoe Union, Wilderness First-Aid trained Emergency Care Training Australia, Asia Pacific Adventure Hong Kong Rope Course Instructor and Mountaineering Federation of the Philippines Inc. (MFPI) Basic Mountaineering Course Instructor. He is also a Philippine Cave Guide Association instructor, Philippine Speleological Society board of trustees, co-founder and former vice-president of Sport Climbing Association of the Phils. Inc. (SCAPI). This could be the very main reason why the Yellow Gate staff are very ready and well-trained

Yellow Gate Adventure Resort has the following future plans: canopy walk, rappel, hanging bridge, and challenge courses. These are only a few of our their plans for development.

Getting There:
When coming from Davao City or Cagayan de Oro City Terminal , one could easliy recognize the place because of it's three colored flag that were evenly spread at the cliffside of the hills. Or when commuting a bus, you can simply inform the bus driver/conductor to drop you at the yellow gate adventure resort [the gate was indeed color yellow, hehehe].

Totally agree with you on the electrical posts. These communication and power companies have been installing connections with total abandon. Davao Light is the usual suspect with the biggest bulk of the unkempt cables belonging to them. The city government on the other hand seems inutile in calling the attention of the culprits or on curbing what has been a despicable sight since time immemorial - or they could just be turning a blind eye on it in return to the thousands of light bulbs donated to them by DLPC.

ICTSI Davao unit takes over new reefer facility
Wednesday, September 22, 2010

Davao Integrated Ports and Stevedoring Services Corp. (DIPSSCOR), a subsidiary of port operator International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI), recently took over operations of a new reefer facility at the Sasa Wharf, International Port of Davao in Mindanao in southern Philippines.

The reefer facility, installed by the Davao port management office of the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA), is seen to boost handling of the growing fruit trade in the Port of Davao, the main transit point for the importation of Philippine bananas. The Philippines is the world’s third largest exporter of bananas, most of which are produced and harvested in the island of Mindanao.

“We are glad that PPA has entrusted the operations and maintenance of this reefer facility to DIPSSCOR. The Port of Davao needs these new reefers because of the thriving banana trade in Mindanao.” says Manuel de Jesus, ICTSI vice president for business development, and DIPSSCOR general manager. PPA has responded positively to the market,

The reefer facility covers an area of 270 square meters, and can handle a total of 144 reefer containers. It is located at the northern portion of Sasa Wharf.

DIPSSCOR is a cargo handler operating at the Sasa Wharf, and is the second largest operation of ICTSI in the Philippines after its flagship Manila International Container Terminal.

Based in Manila, Philippines, ICTSI is a leading port management company involved in the operations and development of 21 marine terminals and port projects in 15 countries worldwide.

DOH Pledges Support for Medical Tourism in Samal (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/279400/doh-pledges-support-medical-tourism-samal)
By Noel Baguio
September 28, 2010, 9:38am

Davao City (28 September) -- The Department of Health (DOH) is supporting plans for the development of medical tourism in the Island Garden City of Samal (IGCS) in Davao del Norte.

Health Assistant Secretary Paulyn Jean Rosell-Ubial assured the all-out support of the department to the proposed modern medical facility to establish the island for medical tourism.

"We will look into putting up a state-of-the-art medical facility in Samal that will primarily cater to the medical needs of tourists," Asec. Ubial said, during the finalization of the rationalization plan for health in the four provinces of the Davao region.

Davao del Norte Governor Rodolfo del Rosario has proposed the development of medical tourism in the island, as part of his strategy to strengthen the health sector, being an important component of his thrust on human development.

During his inaugural message last July, the governor expressed his intention to position IGCS, which is a resort-island city, for medical tourism, besides being a favorite destination for foreign and local retirees seeking a paradise-home of their own.

At present, the island has a district hospital owned and operated by the Provincial Government of Davao del Norte.

Since it is plagued by limited resources, its decrepit building and facilities can hardly provide for the quality health needs of the local populace, much more attract the tourists to seek medical treatment in the facility.

"We have to upgrade the facilities of the hospital," Ubial said.

She said she will personally lobby for the establishment of a medical center in IGCS, similar to the investments provided by the health department in putting up modern medical facilities to boost medical tourism in the resort islands of Boracay, Camiguin and Siargao.

She bared the DOH invested around P100 million for the medical center in Camiguin, which now have a very state of the art intensive care unit.

The department has also recently transformed a public hospital in Siargao into the St. Luke's Hospital of the South.

"We can also do that for the Island Garden City of Samal," she assured, to the delight of the public health executives in the region.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Agapito Hornido bared Gov. del Rosario is very much willing to donate about 5 to 10 hectares of his property in the island, as a site of the new medical center in IGCS. (PIA)

REVIEWING the lessons imparted in last week's 1st Asian Bird Festival, we see a future for Davao City tourism: sustainable eco-tourism. In fact, Davao City is already taking shape as one such destination. Except that people still cannot grasp the concept of conserving what we still have and building around it, without destroying what is there.

We can't blame our elders because that was what Davao was all about before. Cut down all forests to profit from logging. Chop up all remaining trees and flatten the lands to plant bananas and pineapples to profit from agriculture. Extend these lands upto the farthest reaches of the rivers and the mountains to make more profit. And then build malls and amusement parks to compete with the world's best so we can bring in the tourists.

But of course we can never bring in tourists that way. First, we are poor. Second, we don't have and will never have enough tourists (think Mindanao, think terrorist tags, think Manila journalists) to ensure return of investment for such undertakings like Hong Kong Disneyland. We also do not have the centuries old churches and houses of Ilocos and Cebu and even just Intramuros, much less something like the Great Pyramids of Egypt and yes, Michaelangelo's Statue of David. All we have is a poor giant replica and we can't expect tourists to carve memories from looking up at its oversized penis, or do we?

But we have trees and mountains and rivers and waterfalls. All of them in places not even half of Dabawenyos have explored, the lands of which the upper crust of the economy would want to dig up for mining or for plantations.

Last Monday was World Tourism Day during which top United Nations officials stressed the important role of sustainable tourism in conserving diversity of life and reducing poverty.

"Tourism and biodiversity are closely intertwined,"Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon noted in his message for the Day.

"The income generated by sustainable tourism can provide important support for nature conservation, as well as for economic development," he stated. "Furthermore, sustainable tourism can help to raise awareness among tourists and local communities of the importance of biodiversity to our everyday lives."

The World Tourism Organization regards ecotourism as the fastest growing market in the tourism industry today with an annual growth rate of five percent worldwide. This represents 6% of the world gross domestic product and 11.4 percent of global consumer spending. And yet we destroy our ecosystems to give way to theme parks and malls and stuff that everyone else has.

On the fringes, our birds, our forests and our rivers are dying. And for what? Poor replicas like a giant statue of David, an ocean park in Subic that cannot hold a candle to the ocean parks of the world, and the likes of Enchanted Kingdom out there in Luzon as theme parks. Having built those poor copies, we beat our chests and beam about our successes in stirring up local tourism.

Ever since trying Buffalo Wings N’ Things (BWNT) in Manila, I’ve been searching for a similar place to satisfy my craving for wings here in Davao City. I was told by my brother and a bunch of my friends that there’s a place here in Davao City that offers Buffalo Wings. So being the wingman (yes pun intended) that I am, we decided to visit the place and give their buffalo wings a try.

Davao City’s newest pizza joint opened last Saturday (September 18) at the Damosa Market Basket. For some reason, more and more pizza joints are opening in Davao City and I’m not complaining. Pizza Planet is located at the Damosa Market Basket right smack in between Charlie’s Bakeshop and Dencio’s Kamayan.

Vista Land Unveils First Condo Project Outside Manila
September 29, 2010, 5:08pm

Say “Davao” and what comes to mind is the hugeness of the province and of Davao City itself, popularly considered the capital city of Mindanao. Boasting a wide expanse of highways and a bustling international airport and seaport, Davao City is indeed one of the busiest business and tourist hubs south of the Philippines.

Local and foreign tourists certainly wouldn’t want to miss out on Nature at its finest in Davao’s beach resorts, dive spots, and lush mountain hideaways. Cosmopolitan Davao, on the other hand, is fast giving Metro Manila and Metro Cebu a run for their money when it comes to sophisticated living and dining.

The urban lifestyle combined with the warmth of living in the province has drawn and continues to draw individuals and families from all walks of life. This is the reason why Vista Land & Lifescapes, Inc. has chosen Davao City to launch Northpoint, its first vertical residential development outside of Mega Manila.

Northpoint, a five-story British Colonial-inspired structure, has come to represent stylish living for those seeking privacy while still wanting to be close to the city’s major business and entertainment hubs. Manchester, Northpoint’s first tower, is almost sold out. Birmingham, the second tower, has been unveiled to accommodate more buyers.

“Northpoint is another sign of our expansion. Living in a condominium outside of Metro Manila used to be unheard of,” said Jing Serrano, president and CEO of Vista Land & Lifescapes, Inc. “However, we know the pulse of our market and have seen how fast-growing cities, like Davao, would welcome such developments.”

Located in an elevated area at the corner of JP Laurel Avenue and Buhangin Road, Northpoint takes the lead in offering Davaoeños facilities that discriminating urban dwellers demand. It is a stone’s throw away from Davao’s business, education and leisure district.

Residents will enjoy amenities such as a closed circuit TV system; a clubhouse with multi-purpose halls, meditation pond and fitness gym; al fresco café; a salinated swimming pool; a wellness pool (the first in Davao); an internal shuttle service; pocket parks and gardens and a children’s playground. It is also the first condo development in Davao whose units are Wi-Fi and cable-ready, with the clubhouse offering free Wi-Fi.

Vista Residences, the condominium development arm of Vista Land & Lifescapes, entered the market in 2006 to offer Filipinos the easy convenience of condominium living.

129. 1938 DAVAO CARNIVAL AND EXPOSITION

http://img838.imageshack.us/img838/3963/129dvao1copy.jpg (http://img838.imageshack.us/i/129dvao1copy.jpg/)
One of the last big provincial fairs in the flickering days of the national Carnival was held in the city of Davao starting on 25 June 1938. The Davao Carnival and Exposition lasted for two weeks and and the provincial capital pulled no stops in ensuring the carnival’s success. Just like the Manila Carnival, the Davao event also featured a brightly-lit carnival auditorium that was the central venue of many carnival activities.

http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/4419/129dvao2copy.jpg (http://img245.imageshack.us/i/129dvao2copy.jpg/)

Elsewhere, around the city, military, school and government bureau parades were held on the street, featuring officials in horses, marching bands and Boy Scouts.

When evening fell, the auditorium grounds came alive with masked balls, folk dances and other cultural presentations. Most awaited was the selection of the Queen of the Davao Carnival, won by local beauty, Angela Bangoy. One of her princesses was a Miss V. Cortez.

http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/9605/129dvao3copy.jpg (http://img824.imageshack.us/i/129dvao3copy.jpg/)
At her coronation, Queen Angela I donned the costume of a Muslim princess. Throughout the Carnival Days, the beautiful queen received prominent visitors who paid her homage, including Dna. Graciana vds. De Lugod and Mr. Jaime Gavina.

Manila Carnivals (http://manilacarnivals.blogspot.com/2010/08/129-1938-davao-carnival-and-exposition.html)

PS:

MEET ME AT THE CARNIVAL!
Perhaps, no other event has piqued the interest and stirred a nation’s imagination more than the fabled Manila Carnivals. Held from 1908-1939, the 2-week fair was organized as a goodwill event to celebrate harmonious U.S.-Philippine relations and to showcase our commercial, industrial and agricultural progress. Spectacular parades, lavish shows, firework displays and the crowning of the Manila Carnival Queen highlighted the "greatest annual event in the Orient". This blog recalls the glorious Carnival era via pictorial mementos and discussions of its historied past. See you at the fair!

And Goys, you should also try the pizza at Boys Town in Maa. The chef if I remember it right was a white guy who helps run the centre. I remember going there with a bunch of friends and we all enjoyed their oven-baked pizza which is similar to how Picobello makes theirs. That being said, you eat there and you help the orphans living at Boys Town. :)

Guys Davao is now a recognized tourist destination nationally and to a lesser extent-internationally.We need to broaden our campaign and come up with exciting ideas.I notice in Australia,Philippine tourism is almost unheard of(we're supposed to be close neighbours) unless we get bad news like that tragic event in the capital last month.People will still come no matter how bad the news-look at Bali and Fiji.
Mind you our hotel rates are comparatively higher than some of those in KL and of course way more expensive than those in Indonesia and the South Pacific nations.I hope they will do something about it.to be honest MP is way too expensive to be in Davao-similar price to 4-5star hotels in Adelaide, melbourne, Paris and Berlin.
Also I would like to mention our standard of service and cleanliness still need room for improvement(with some exemption to a few really expensive accommodations).I know in the near future this will be at par with the western standard.
We mostly market our tourists spots to the Americans but i notice it's slowly changing
now.In case some people doesn't realize, Europeans and Australians travel more than the Yanks because they have more annual leave days-up to six weeks(France and australia especially),whereas the Yanks just have 3 weeks the most.
And btw, isn't it about time some investors should consider putting up a real amusement park in this side of the Philippines?

Real estate builders adopt green technology (http://www.dailymirror.ph/Sept-2010/09302010/biz2.html)
BY JUDY QUIROS

The construction sector in Davao City is taking a major step in helping curtail the effects of climate change by adopting green technology.

The paradigm shift is being spearheaded by the Chamber of Real Estate Builders Association (CREBA) in partnership with the Real Estate Brokers Association of the Philippines, Inc. (REBAP).

Going green in the building of subdivisions, medium to high-rise buildings, offices, and other edifices will highlight the upcoming 1st Mindanao Housing Convention on October 6 in Davao City.

Speaking at the Club 888 Forum yesterday at The Marco Polo, Davao, CREBA-Davao chapter president Carlos Vargas said with the booming construction industry in the city, now is the time to shift to green technology in the construction industry as its contribution to universal efforts of combating climate change.

He said going green means using construction materials that resist heat and other situations contributory to climate change.

Construction companies, for example, can use fire bricks made of silt, which are heat resistant, instead of using concrete cement.

Vargas said construction materials for green technology are 20 percent cheaper than conventional materials.

He said the use of water catchment roofings is also beneficial because rainwater can be put to use instead of being allowed to go down the drain.

Vargas said the construction industry in the city is booming given the surfacing of medium and high-rise buildings or condominiums.

He said the City Planning and Development Office is helping CREBA in its advocacy for green technology.

This is laudable move from the local government. Safety education amongst passenger vehicle drivers and and a dedicated watch group are good components in curbing vehicular accidents. It's good the stakeholders (drivers and operators) also mentioned about jaywalking that has since become the favorite past time of every Filipino. Everybody indeed has to pitch in to make sure everyone is out of harms way while on the streets.

Traffic squad to also impound trisiboats: Mayor
Wednesday, September 29, 2010

ONCE the city streets are cleared of reckless drivers, next on the list to be taken off the streets are colorum motorcycles, especially the payong-payong or trisiboats, said Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte.

She made the statement as her father, Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, gathered Wednesday afternoon jeepney drivers for a mass scolding of sorts at the Almendras Gym in the city.

The mayor said on Tuesday that it would be a matter of time before the Traffic Eagle Squad (TES), which has been tasked to impound reckless drivers, would turn its full attention to unregistered trisiboats (motorcycle cabs or the "payong-payong").

"Gaihap lang na sila ug oras, maagihan na sila sa atong Traffic Squad. Hurot pud na sila dinha (It's only a matter of time before they too will be removed from the streets by the Traffic Squad)," Mayor Duterte said in an interview at the Public Safety Command Center, where she held a command conference with law enforcers.

She said she has been receiving complaints about such vehicles that are mostly not registered and do not have franchises but are creating havoc in the streets.

"Dili siya maayo para sa traffic, dili maayo para sa safety sa mga pasahero (They're not good for our traffic, they're not good for the safety of the passengers)," she said.

The mayor also warned that when colorum motorcycles are caught on highways, the impounding fee would be P1,500 per day.

"So ginaingon nako karon sa ilaha, patuman mo unsang balaod (I am telling drivers of colorum motorcycles, follow the law)," she said.

For so long, the city has been tolerating payong-payong and trisikads but only in inner city roads and not main thoroughfares. With the proliferation of these illegal passenger vehicles, however, even main thoroughfares have now been taken over.

The mayor on Monday announced the creation of the TES under city-administered Traffic Management Center during the flag-raising ceremony.

Composed of five teams with four men each, the TES would work in shifts covering 24 hours. Five new mobile patrols bearing their logo were assigned to them, bringing to seven the mobile patrols under TMC.

Five motorcycles were also assigned to the TES from the City Mayor's office.

Licenses confiscated

TMC officer-in-charge Retired Colonel Desiderio Cloribel said that since Monday, they have been confiscating licenses of drivers cited for different traffic violations.

"We have confiscated 176 driver's license of different violations from PUJs, motorcycles, and private vehicles. Forty-nine motorcycles have been impounded," Cloribel said through text.

Mayor Duterte on Monday also met the heads of Land Transportation Office (LTO) and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) at the City Hall conference room, wherein she said she wants strict implementation of rules.

"Nagsabot mi (We agreed that) if it's your regulatory function, dapat istrikto mo, otherwise daghan na ang... ang safety sa tao ra gihapon ang macompromise (you have to be strict with them otherwise you will be compromising the riding public's safety)," Duterte said.

The mayor added she also asked the two agencies to help prepare modules for drivers' education, which the City Hall will conduct every Friday.

The city conducts a driver's education from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the City Hall. After which, the participant will receive an identification card that has to be displayed inside the vehicles.

Duterte said LTO and LTFRB should be very strict in inspecting the engines of motor vehicles to be registered or to be given franchise to ensure that the engines are appropriate to the vehicle body, unlike the uso-uso jeepneys that are rigged with truck engines to make these run faster.

Meeting with traffic enforcers

Meanwhile, Vice Mayor Duterte held Wednesday a conference at Grand Men Seng Hotel and ordered traffic enforcers to implement a speed limit of 40 kilometers per hour (kph) on city streets.

LTO Gomer Dy and LTFRB's Abdulgafar agreed to the order.

"Tell them (the drivers), you asked for it, you repeatedly went against the law then we give what you want," the elder Duterte said.

He also ordered traffic enforcers and the police to randomly check passenger vehicles following reports that some drivers are using drugs.

Meeting with drivers

Later in the afternoon, Vice Mayor Duterte went to Almendras gym wherein over 1,000 operators and drivers were gathered. He reminded the drivers of their responsibility over lives of their passengers.

"Thirty kilometers per hour ang inyo karon. Kinabuhi na. Basi kamo'y akong patyon. Musurok akong dugo. Mga buang (You should not go faster than 30 kph. You are dealing with lives here. I might end up killing you instead if I get mad. You're all crazy)," the vice mayor said.

"It is very unfair mga amahan, inahan mamatay ang mga bata mabilin mag-antos. Di nako na madawat. Suwayi ninyo ang traynta. Mag-adjust mo (It's unfair for children to lose their parents just because of you. I cannot accept that. You first try a maximum speed of 30 kph and then adjust from there)," he added.

Duterte said heads of traffic concerns have agreed that drivers cited for reckless driving will be fined P1,200 and have his franchise suspended for one month for the first offense.

For the second offense, the penalty is P2,000 fine and two months suspension of franchise, while for the third, the fine will be P2,500 fine and one year suspension of franchise.

Those into drag racing were also not spared from the vice mayor's tirades as he warned that they will also be arrested.

About 2,000 drivers and operators were present during the gathering.

Reactions

Edel Gonzafa, secretary general of Transmission Piston, said: "We accept what we were castigated about... But we also want transparency on what violations we are being cited for because reckless driving is too vague a term. The passengers too must accept that drivers from now on will not hurry up."

Robert Noya, a taxi driver, said they will support the order, but stressed that the city should also re-implement the anti-jaywalking law because pedestrians are also adding to the traffic.

"With regard to our passengers, since we are now supposed to just go at 30 kph, then they should give lead time whenever they call for a cab," he said in vernacular. (Jade C. Zaldivar)

And btw, isn't it about time some investors should consider putting up a real amusement park in this side of the Philippines?

we can't depend on our National Government on this , they'll prioritized Luzon , it's a trickle "effect" as what they're doing on investment, appropriation and etc. it's Luzon, Visayas and lastly Mindanao.Hindi tayo aasa dun kasi it's the same old story, but on the possitive side Davao was spared of over development and poor planning. I told Bong Aportadera we should tap the potential and point our energy on BIMP-EAGA and Australia. with rich Brunei and Malaysia on the said group the investment is very HUGE. "It's just how we find ores on a mountain full of gold" . we should a tap a Rodrigo Duterte-like leader on this endeavour.

Ultraman coming to Davao

"WE ALL have a story. We are all an inspiration. We all face challenges in life and have the need to overcome adversity."

That statement comes from Jason P. Lester, who will be coming to Davao on the first week of December. He will be running with Filipino runners from Digos City to Bansalan.

Post your reaction to the Manila hostage crisis

"Never Stop." That is his motto in life. "I'm a firm believer in those words," says the recipient of the ESPY award given by the American cable television network ESPN.

ESPY stands for Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly and in 2009.

He became the first male triathlete to win an ESPY Best Male Athlete with a Disability.

Lester had completed an Ultraman Canada, two Ultraman Hawaii events and Ironman Hawaii world championship in a 13-month period.

Ironman, touted to be the ultimate endurance, is the pinnacle of triathlon. But what earned Lester the ESPY award was for doing Ultraman, which consisted of two Ironman distances in three days - first day, six-mile swim and 90-mile bike; second day, 176-mile bike; third day, 52-mile run - each day under 12 hours.

Just recently, the 36-year-old Hawaii resident did the unthinkable EPIC5. In less than one week, he completed five iron distance triathlons on five Hawaiian islands in less than one week. Lester accomplished 2.4 miles of swimming, 112 miles of biking and 26.2 miles of running each day.

Lester's just extremely driven.

"He's a machine when it comes to an ability to race," coach Dave Ciavarella, who's a neuroradiologist and trauma team member at Emanuel Hospital and a coach for the Ironheads Multisport Racing team, told a Hawaiian daily. "He's not super fast, but his ability to endure a work load is tremendous."

But tremendous is not the word you use to describe his life. He has survived more trials, endured more horrors and surmounted more obstacles than would fit in a Hollywood movie.

His biography states: "After each upset, letdown, and setback, he has recommitted himself to pursuing his dream of becoming an accomplished athlete, despite his challenges."

His recently-published memoir, Running on Faith: The Principles, Passion, and Pursuit of a Winning Life, is his story as an Ironman with the use of one arm and his mission to overcoming adversity, reaching goals and recognizing God's guiding hand in one's life.

Born in 1974 in Arizona, Lester has a long history of being an athlete. Growing up as a child without a mother, he played baseball and football. By the time he was 12, he developed into a skilled athlete with numerous accolades.

As fate would have it, he was hit while on his bicycle by a woman driving 70 miles per hour who ran a red light. He was left for dead with 21 broken bones and a collapsed lung. He lost the use of his right arm, which became partially paralyzed as a result of the accident.

Over the next several months while he began a lengthy hospital recovery, dreams of becoming a professional athlete were put on hold. While he was still in the hospital recovering, his father and sole guardian, died of a heart attack at the age of 39.

But that didn't stop Lester's drive. Inspired by the memory of his father's love of athletics, he went on to continue to play baseball and football, making the all star game with the use of only one arm. He continued to play sports throughout high school and college.

By the age of 16, he was competing in running and biathlon events. After participating in countless races, he was ranked No. 2 in the state of Arizona in biathlons at the age of 18. All throughout those years, he never thought of having a paralyzed right arm as a disability but rather sees it as "a challenge."

There were more challenges when he visited Hawaii. It turned out the visit was the turning point of his athletic career. He stumbled upon the 2004 Hawaiian Ironman Championships taking place in Kona and his spirit was totally overcome by the awe of the race. He felt re-energized and came to believe that this was his life's calling.

Lester hired a coach to teach him how to swim and began training vigorously. With the intense training schedule, amazingly Jason began to notice that he was slowly regaining movement in his right arm.

But his aspirations didn't stop at the Ironman. On November 30, 2008, he achieved a personal and sports milestone by becoming the first physically-challenged athlete ever to complete the Ultraman World Championships in Hawaii.

But before that accomplishment, he raced in three Ironman competitions, including the Ironman World Championships, represented United States in the Triathlon World Championships, and completed Ultraman Canada.

Despite all the accolades he has been receiving these days, he never stops inspiring other people. In fact, he launched The Never Stop Foundation in 2007 "to encourage all youth to have the chance to achieve their full potential."

The foundation provides programs and learning opportunities that encourage its participants to think about their lives while giving them the practical skills to turn their hopes and dreams into reality.

His life is a living example. "I could have easily quit," he recalls that three months of hospital stay and six months of rehabilitation, during which time his father died. "A lot of things didn't make sense back then. But, I made a decision to go right, instead of left - I chose a path to live a healthier life and use my gifts and abilities to be an athlete."

If you are wondering how he manages to do all those challenges, here's how. In triathlons, he straps his arm to his side for swimming, attaches the arm to his bike during bicycling and tucks the arm into his shorts while running.

"It's like how we wake up and tie our shoes and get out the door - it became natural," he was quoted as saying by a Hawaiian news daily. "My strongest suit is discipline in my mind. We all have challenges, some are physical and more are mental."

Inability to use his arm only comes into play while swimming, but Lester uses more of his legs to thrust himself through water and strokes with his left arm. "Your body adapts to one limb," he points out. "In swimming, it's all upper body (work); swimmers rarely use power in their legs. I use my legs, probably double of normal athletes. When I get out of the water, it's like I've just run a marathon."

Lester found solace through art. Both his father and grandfather were accomplished artists, and Jason seemed to have inherited the same gift - a natural talent for painting. He does abstract painting; he doesn't use brushes but his feet!

In 2001, he opened The JR Gallery in Manhattan Beach, California, featuring the works of new and established artists, including paintings from Jason's own collection. The gallery and art career flourished and he became an internationally acclaimed artist, with many of his works and private commissions being requested by the sports clients of his past.

Meanwhile, Lester is dead set on making his life as an inspiring example to others - especially among Filipinos during his forthcoming visit. "My hope is to share my story and inspire others that anything is possible, no matter what challenges we face in life," he answers when asked what's his reason for coming to the country.

"I'll be visiting surrounding countries for my book tour and felt it in my heart to come to the Philippines," he continues. "I've had my heart set on visiting for quite a while now, and would love to be involved in one of the races or charity-based events there. I'd like to reach out to the youth with the possibility of doing a fun run with them to bring them together and inspire them."

On your mark, get set, go!

Dabawenyos pick tourism, aggie, IT top 3 invest areas
Monday, 27 September 2010 00:00

http://img835.imageshack.us/img835/4922/e3issue30cover.jpg (http://img835.imageshack.us/i/e3issue30cover.jpg/)

TOURISM is the top choice of Dabawenyos as an industry that government and private sector should heavily invest in to spur the economic growth of Davao City and adjoining cities and provinces in Region 11.

Tourism, sometimes known as hospitality industry, is followed by agriculture and information and communication technology (ICT).
The choice was made by mobile phone owners among Dabawenyos who were asked in an opinion survey to name two to three industries which they want the government and the private sector to pour investments in. The question was “texted” to close to 200 people by Edge Davao last Wednesday and Thursday, in an opinion poll whose results became part of the input of editor in chief, Antonio M. Ajero, as a panelist/reactor in the orientation seminar on the 2010 Investment Priorities Plan (IPP) by the Board of Investments at the Apo View Hotel, in Davao City last Friday. No less than BOI Gov. Geronimo Sta. Ana led the team of resource persons who explained the IPP plan, including the government incentives to local and foreign locators.
More than 100 persons responded to the mobile phone survey, a number of them through e-mail and calls.
Fifty-one respondents opted for urism as an industry that government and the private sector should put more money on.
Tourism is followed by agriculture, with 45 “votes” and ICT (information, communication and technology) with 38.
No. 4 choice areas of investments are energy and transportation, with 25 “votes” each. Infrastructures, which the “texters” did not specify; property development and housing; and micro finance are in No. 5 spot with 18 votes each.
Six respondents mentioned new government center; education; fruit processing; research and development; manufacturing; livelihood; recreation facilities; complete health care delivery system; convention center; sports complex; mariculture; and lifestyle of health and safety (LOHAS) as investment areas that should get priority attention from the government and private sector investors.
Only one of the respondents endorsed mining while one other who mentioned mining was actually against it.
The selected top investment areas uncannily jibe with the published priorities of the new city administration under Mayor Sara Z. Duterte-Carpio, who assumed as the youngest, and first ever lady, chief executive Davao City last July 1st.
Lizabeth “Wit” Holganza, former president of ICT Davao, Inc., owner of the Medical Transcription Academy and now a ranking officer of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc., was one of those who participated in the opinion survey. She said “there is a synergy between the local government’s and the chamber of commerce’s short-term objective whereby both institutions have identified agriculture, tourism and ICT as among their priority industries.”
“Clearly, Davao possesses competitive advantages in these industries as evidenced by the presence of aggressive industry players, rich natural resources and wonders complimented by a typhoon-free geography as well as a huge talent pool that fuels the growth of all three industries,” Holganza said.
She said, “If we only put our resources into developing research and development and market promotions our growth potential will be tremendous.”
Interestingly, lawyer Domingo Duerme, vice president for Mindanao of Philippine Airlines, and himself a pillar of local tourism, would rather that Dabawenyos first focus their efforts in promoting agriculture among domestic and foreign investors.
“We should focus first on agriculture since we are not yet prepared for industrialization which will simply follow anyway,” Duerme said, adding, “let’s focus on rice, palm oil, rubber, coconut and bananas.”
Once established, he said, “we can go to rice milling, oil milling, banana chip production, caplam production for rubber, etc.”
“Agriculture must be the top priority of investors because this is the biggest source of employment in the countryside where unemployment is very high. It is in agriculture where manufacturing activities emanate,” said Teresita Pascual, top executive of Bonifacio Motors and Cecilia Farms, and who is also into poultry-raising.
The answers of the city councilors included in the poll also mirrored the priorities of Inday Sara.
Councilor Bernie Al-ag and his wife, Cherry Faye, who is an executive of a banana company, placed tourism No. 1 in their list because the industry has great potentials in the Davao region.
“We can provide job and business opportunities to our people if we maximize the full tourism potential of our city,” texted the Al-ags.
Next in the young couple’s list is agricultural facilities and technology. Since we have vast agricultural lands, we can be the No. 1 supplier of agri products in Asia, they said, Third in their list is mass transport system “which will create great economic activity in the region.”
The following are the opinions of some respondents:
Question: As a businessman, professional or leader in our community, please name 2 to 3 industries into which the private sector and/or government should pour investments. If you wish, please state why.
Vicente T. Lao, contractor and poultry-raiser and chair, Mindanao Business Council:
TOURISM, because it creates jobs. AGRICULTURE, for food security. ENERGY, because we can’t move forward without a stable and reliable energy supply.
George Regalado, Dabawenyo member of the board of directors, Land Bank of the Philippines:
POST HARVEST FACILITIES; TOURISM-related infra projects; and TRANSPORTATION-related big ticket projects.
Emily Zen Chua, lawyer:
Of course, investment is needed in AGRICULTURE.
Lito Cruz, school owner and businessman:
HOTEL business is good because of the projected six million tourist arrivals by year 2016.
Evelyn Lavina, landscaper, farmer and entrepreneur:
1. AGRI 2. TOURISM 3. ICT. Agri for food sustainability, health, wellness and greenliving. Tourism for value adding to anything whether agri or just shanty. ICT kasi it’s a need and it will really happen. The three will be bigh income generating, with domino effect on other industries.
Ramon Edison Batacan, lawyer:
1. TOURISM. If a system is put in place, it’s going to spur economic activity in the city. The rest will follow.
2. EXPORT INDUSTRY. Establish an export processing zone. It will attract the needed foreign investments to the city and employment opportunities will increase.
3. REALTY DEVELOPMENT. A comprehensive zoning plan should be passed to guide future expansion of business and housing development. Wider roads and traffic system will be easily implemented as the city grows in time.
Aileen Gajo, NCCC Mall executive:
Agricultural productivity for food security. MICRO ENTREPRENEURSHIP development---jobs and income generation.
Manuel “Jam” Jamonir, civil engineer/devt planner:
NEW GOV’T CENTER thru PPP to decongest CBD (central business district) area, support it with RIVERINE TRANSPORT SYSTEM. NEW REGIONAL BUS TRANSIT SYSTEM along major corridors. NEW LAND USE PLAN promoting socialized medium rise housing.
Ednar Dayanghirang, lumad leader, tv program host:
AGRI, POWER, MODERN TRANSPORTATION, INFRA, HOUSING, CYBERTECH, TOURISM.
Jonallier M. Perez, Mindanao Tourism Council corporate secretary:
TRANSPORTATION. New roads and other infra projects where there are none, improving dilapidated ones. We need connectivity of people, goods and services.
TOURISM infra, such as convention centers, sports complex, action centers, retirement villages, outdoor adventure. Tourism is a fine engine of growth.
SCHOOLS that offer courses demanded by local and international economies. Eliminate mismatch of graduates and jobs. Nurses become caregivers, HRM graduates becoming welders, etc.
Maria Luisa Jacinto, director of the Davao City Water District, Rotary assistant governor:
AGGIE, specially research in product and productivity improvement, as well as market development. The region should capitalize on strong aggie sector and funds are needed to maximize output of this sector .
ICT, being typhoon-free, our area is ideal for ICT centers. We can very well serve as the seat of a competent and reliable ICT center in Mindanao.
Ricardo “Ricky” Jimenez Jr., journalist/consumer advocate and newspaper columnist:
LIFESTYLE of health and safety (LOHAS) is a $209-billion industry worldwide, which investors cash in. It means producing safe, healthy foods, good renewable energy. These are investments with a viable future here and abroad. We are an agro-industrial region with the natural bounties to back us up.
Cheldone “Don” Canes, entrepreneur/ Rotarian:
It should be in TOURISM and infrastructures, like hotels, malls, etc.
Reynaldo “Boy” I. Reyes, bank owner/ Rotary past district governor:
Government and private sector should invest in the following:
POWER/ENERGY
MASS TRANSPORT SYSTEM
INFRASTRUCTURE
Ms CRISTETA GALLANO, consultant on Davao River initiatives and environment; Rotary club president:
MARICULTURE and COASTAL PARK development which can employ displaced fisherfolks and address food and environment security 2. Honest-to-goodness TREE PLANTATIONS which can increase patrimonial equity and supply other forward linkages and help address Global Warming 3. REASEARCH and DEVELOPMENT projects which can jumpstart new industry innovations with renewable energies.
Joey Dalumpines, journalist/broadcaster:
POWER SOURCES to sustain business and industries; RAILWAY SYSTEM to hasten movcment of goods and people; MICRO FINANCING for small businessmen to free them from modern-day loan sharks and traditional Hindu usury.
Cesar Ledesma, former city administrator:
Maybe sustainable AGRI, renewable ENERGY and FRUIT PROCESSING. Definitely NO to mining and exploitation of natural resources.
William “Willie” Yong, architect and Rotary club president:
TOURISM---make citizens conscious of the importance of maintaining our environment.
INFRA-structures that can house citizen activities like government center, convention center, parks, open spaces, hospitals, schools, terminals, business centers, and widening of road system.
LIVELIHOOD PROJECTS
Jade Zaldivar, young newspaper reporter, also business writer:
MSME, pour finances through money lending;
RECREATION facilities, sports complex, as these would also boost tourism;
SOCIAL SERVICES---health and education
Arturo “Art” Boncato Jr., newly-assumed regional director of the Department of Tourism:
TOURISM: Invest in multi sectoral advocacy to realize direct flights. New markets stir local economies and create ripples to development
LIGHT MANUFACTURING: Davao’s raw materials + Value = vibrant livelihood and healthy receipts
Asec. Romulo Busuego, Department of Health
I am more interested as usual in HEALTH INVESTMENT. I believe Mindanao needs a comprehensive or complete health care system that will cater also to the East Asean Growth Area
Robbie Alabado II, City Planning and Development Coordinator
We need to harness EXISTING RESOURCES of our city: Human resources and material resources + presence of good educational facilities + agri products + existing transportation links + increasing urbanization as regional center = opportunities in tourism, ICT, agro industries, housing, power and service industries.
Councilor Joan Bonguyan
IT industry and BPO, especially because Davao is identified as the next wave for IT Hub, we have to take advantage of it.
Araceli Ayuste, tourism operator
The first to be prioritized is TOURISM, the private sector will be the one to develop our priorities and the government will provide infra. Example is the Samal private-led tourism. Government should provide good roods, good sewerage facilities and not solely rely on the private sector.
Another area is REAL ESTATE. The government should help developers, not thru indiscriminate fees and charges but by helping control the area for housing build up which just sprout anywhere.
Andrei Fournier, Technopreneur, IT consultant
Definite ICT due to the potential for jobs and income security. Secondly, FOOD PROCESSING to address spoilage of raw materials and add value to production. Lastly, investment and researches in TRADITIONAL HERBAL remedies to provide our people with cheap medicines.
Conrado Hernaiz, former DCCCII executive director
Deeper attention to needs of MSMEs, TOURISM AND RICE PRODUCTION.
Councilor Pilar Braga
IT, AGRI, ENERGY
Nikki Gomez, Journalist
TOURISM, for Mindanao especially. The government should provide policy climate and infra support and international marketing while the business sector can develop destinations.
Ferdinand Subido, Banker and Rotarian
INFRASTRUCTURE AND AGRICULTURE
Councilor John Louie Bonguyan
IT, IT PARK to continue generating jobs
Convention center that can accommodate 8 to 10,000 people
MODERN SPORTS COMPLEX

MSME, pour finances through money lending;
RECREATION facilities, sports complex, as these would also boost tourism;

Design for tenement housing to be presented to city next month
Written by: Escovilla , Joel B.
Thursday, 30 September 2010

A CONSORTIUM of developers and real estate brokers will present the technical design for the medium-rise tenement housing for informal settlers and minimum-wage earners to the city government for approval next month.

Carlos Omar A. Vargas, president of the Chamber of Real Estates and Builder’s Association (CREBA), said they already identified a 40-hectare property right in the urban center with the potential to pilot-test the innovation: a 4-5 storey building that will feature rain catchments in roofs and fire bricks fashioned out of silts and wastes in line with its advocacy for green technology.

“When we say of green technology, we use environmental-friendly materials. We would use fire bricks instead of hollow blocks. It is by way of mitigating climate change through advocating green technology,” Vargas said.

He said the project is going to be a low-cost structure where people can rent the unit for as low as P1,000 per month or buy it for only P250,000.

“We already proposed to help them (city government) in the development, we are also negotiating with the landowner,” he said during the weekly Club 888 forum at Marco Polo Hotel, adding that the original proposal was to revert 80 percent back to the landowner and the 20 percent will be allocated for the project.

Vargas, however, declined to name the exact location to avoid luring another colony of informal settlers to the area.

Modeled after the BLISS project of former first lady Imelda Marcos in several areas in Metro Manila in her capacity as governor of Metro
Manila and Minister of Human Settlements, each studio-type unit will measure 24 square meters and the number of units will depend on how much land will be donated by the landowner. Using the fire bricks will also save on cost because they are 20% cheaper compared to other construction materials.

In the city, it is estimated that 20 percent of Davaoeños are informal settlers. In 2009, the CPDO identified 372 houses built by informal
settlers in government and private properties, danger zones, pathways and open canals.

Roberto Alabado III, acting head of the City Planning and Development Coordinating Office (CPDO), said earlier that the city government will partner with the National Housing Authority and the private land owners near the urban center to realize this plan.

“We hope that the private sector would ponder to share their land to assure a win-win solution to the housing problem,” Alabado said.
