Grandeza captures world title (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/sports/grandeza-captures-world-title)
By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan
DAVAO City's very own Steve "The Red Knight" Grandeza defeated Al Hassan "Ghanna Van Damme" Okine via unanimous decision after seven rounds of their World Superwelterweight Championship fight at the Chi Garden, The Lodge, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Saturday night.
Grandeza, in an e-mail interview yesterday, said: "I am very happy, of course, with humility and pride to have represented the country, Davao City and the Philippine Moo Duk Kwan Soo Bahk Do, Inc. Winning the championship title is extra special for me."
Post your reaction to the Manila hostage crisis
He said he hit Okine by a left roundhouse kick to the face that sent the latter down in the first round. It was after the Dabawenyo knockout specialist hit the Ghana fighter with a jumping side kick to the body that sent him to the ropes.
"In the succeeding rounds, I hit him by an axe kick and a punching combination and a right hook that brought him down again," Grandeza said.
He said the referee should have stopped the fight earlier as Okine was already groggy and stable in the first four rounds of KO Promotions-organized fight.
"Okine was just saved by the bell in most of the rounds," the new K1 World Kickboxing Federation (WKF) superwelterweight champion said.
He shared his victory with his brother Bryan who trained him for the fight and who prepared everything that he neeeded.
He went on saying, "I offer this win to my bestfriend and coach Edgar Alan Paulino who was there with me through thick and thin; to my Dad, Master Bing, for without him I wouldn't be where I am now; my ever supportive Mom Cynthia, sister Angela and to my son Ice. Finally, this is for my inspiration, Myla Belle, who's always been there with me and taking the responsibilities whenever I'm away."
Grandeza, a 10-time National Open Blackbelt Battle of the Champions Tournament champion, said he used a combination of power and technique to beat Okine with the guidance of his brother-trainer Bryan and coach Edgar.
"I was the underdog during the fight as everyone was cheering for him (Okine). But when the fight started, I felt I was already in control `coz I can see his kicks and punches. I was also able to take his power," he recalled.
The three-member Team Pilipinas Phoenix Moo Duk Kwan also thanked consultant Ben Sur and sponsors Phoenix Petroleum Philippines, PAGCOR, NIS Motors Corporation, Davao Bayan Construction & Hardware Supply, Inc., Rockspec Gears, Mayor Sara and Vice Mayor Rody Duterte for backing its stint in Dubai. MANILA, Philippines—The top British firm B/E Aerospace has chosen the Philippines as the site of its manufacturing facility, which will create more than 300 new jobs for Filipinos, British Ambassador Stephen Lillie said Monday.
B/E Aerospace is the leading provider the leading provider of aircraft interior products and solutions and the world’s leading distributor of aerospace fasteners and consumables for the commercial, business jet and military markets.
Out of an initial list of 32 countries, B/E Aerospace, Inc and its Leighton-Buzzard division, B/E Aerospace UK Ltd has chosen the Philippines to set-up its manufacturing facility to accommodate a multi-billion-dollar contract to manufacture galleys for the Airbus A350XWB, one of the new generation of wide body aircraft. Completed galley units will be shipped to Marseilles and then onwards to Toulouse, where the Airbus A350 will be assembled.
"I welcome this major manufacturing investment, and am delighted that the British Embassy Trade & Investment team was able to assist a top-quality UK company like B/E Aerospace in identifying options for locating in the Philippines. I hope this will go to show that the Philippines offers opportunities for business success not only in the service sector but in manufacturing also," said Lillie.
"The first phase of the investment is worth over $30 million. This is good news for the Philippines, particularly since the investment will create more than 300 new jobs locally. We hope the new Philippine administration will take pro-active measures to create a more attractive investment climate for the Philippines, so that there will be even more projects like this." he added.
The UK government has been looking toward Asia for trade and investment opportunities, recognizing the region’s emerging markets as the driving force of global recovery.
Early this year Ambassador Lillie went to the UK to promote the Philippines to British companies in London and this November, UK Trade and Investment Director Derek Page will be meeting British companies in Bristol, Newcastle, and Hinckley.
With the assistance of UK Trade and Investment’s commercial services, B/E Aerospace conducted extensive market research on several countries. The UK Trade and Investment team at the British embassy in Manila was able to help the UK company’s decision to set up their manufacturing facility in the Philippines.

DAVAO CITY, Philippines -- British Aerospace (BAe) has shortlisted southern Mindanao among the five Asian locations where it plans to put up a $40-million manufacturing facility, said an investment official.
BAe is a UK-based aircraft manufacturing and solutions company.
Gil Dureza, chief of the Board of Investment (BOI) in southern Mindanao, said Tuesday BAe officials had made inquiries with the British embassy in Manila about the region.
Dureza said BAe wanted information on the transport system in the region – land, air and sea, costs of transport, and other available support facilities.
Dureza said BAe also inquired about specific companies, which have been manufacturing machine parts, fabricated metal parts, loom and harness, and plastics vacuum-formed parts, companies engaged in composite electrical cable printing, and injection moulding.
He said one possible site for the company would be the Hijo International Port in Madaum in Tagum City.
The port, which is owned by the Hijo Resources Corp., has two operating berths with a total area of 25 hectares.
The other possible sites were Sta. Cruz in Davao del Sur, where San Miguel Brewery in Mindanao is based, and Digos City, where Japanese tile-maker Nakayama Technology Corp. has a plant.
Dureza said if BAe were to choose the region, the investment would create more job opportunities for the locals.
BAe is a major player in the European Air Defense System. It manufactures the largest passenger aircraft, Airbus A380, and other types of aircraft.:banana::banana:

How can u be ever alone if u are in Jesus Christ. It means, He is in you and you are in Him. Even on my own, I'd never say I'm alone. Coz my Jesus Christ is always with me. He is a person bro. U can talk to Him. God is a personal God, not a concept or fictional character.
Now in the natural, probably, u just have to look for other believers that u share same faith with. That's why we have local churches. I myself belong to a local church here @ Bonifacio Global City. I fellowship and interact with other young Godly people. There are a lot of us. In the company I'm with, we have circle of Christians and we invite people regardless of religion and denomination to fellowship with. Do not look at people based on their religion, congregation, or denomination. Look at them, in Jesus Christ.
U dont try to live a holy life. The holy life is fruit of ur love for Christ. Example, if u have a girlfriend or a boyfriend, and u love him or her so much...ur not going to do things to hurt him or her right? U're going to love him or her so much to the point of doing things that would please him or her.
U dont try to do things for him or her so that u will love her. U are already inlove with him or her that's why the fruit comes out naturally...u do good things for him or her. It's based on ur love for him or her. That is Christianity. Religion would say do this and do that....But Jesus said, I love u thus He died for us. When u meditate on His love for u, when u fall in love with Jesus Christ, to be holy is not a life of trying- it will come out naturally. So dont focus on religion...focus on Jesus Christ. Read His word, fellowship with Him, i didnt change overnight, it took half a decade before I realize who He truly is. And the more u look onto Him, the more u'll see ur true self. For it is written, as Jesus is, so are u in this world (I John 4:17).
U see dude, the world is going down. That's why I'd rather be with God and His children than with the entire world. Greater is HE that is in u, than him who is in the world - that is written in the bible by the way in 1 John 4:4. The world system is deteriorating hence the global financial crisis and other bad and scary news that u can see when u turn on the Tube. People meditate on these news...what about the good news? That God loves them regardless of. That God sent Jesus Christ to die for us so we can live? And that while the world is going down, His children are rising up. The world is divided between believers and unbelievers, the Godly and the unGodly. And no need for research to check the difference of both camps. Just look at their fruits.
When I became a Christian, some old friends fled away. But I'd rather lose these people than lose the real substance of my living - Jesus Christ. And when I put God first, everything falls in its right place (finances, career, business, relationship, peace of mind, etc). I use my achievements today to glorify God and I'm thankful that when people ask me or the other successful Christians in my group are asked "why are u guys stable in spite of the shaky situation?" We point them to God!. For God is our stability. So we would rather be in God, than in the world.

An annual program of the SGV Foundation, Inc. co-presented by De La Salle University, Department of Trade and Industry, Philippine Business for Social Progress, Philippine Stock Exchange and the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship, the contest, officially called Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year, is the same search won in the past by Tony Tancaptiong of Jollibee Foods and Mrs. Socorro Ramos of National Bookstore.
The national finalist from Davao City is civil engineer Remegio G. Salanatin, founder and president of R.G. Salanatin Construction, who is also known in socio-civic circles in the Visayas and Mindanao as an emerging leader of the Rotary International (RI).
An article published in the BusinessWorld last Tuesday describes Rotary SAG (senior assistant governor) “Boy” Salanatin as a “teacher builder” referring to his continuing passion for teaching. In the BW article, Boy considers himself a “lucky entrepreneur” because he never planned things to happen but they just fell into place. And while he attributes his good fortune to “getting the right breaks at the right time,” he blended vision, insight and expertise to transform this luck into a thriving construction business.
“Entrepreneurship was not Mr. Salanatin’s original career track; it was in academe. After graduating valedictorian from the University of San Agustin in 1965 and placing second in the civil engineering board exams, he took up graduate studies in Structural Engineering at the University of the Philippines and Business Administration at the De La Salle University. He worked in Manila briefly before returning to the province to pursue his interest in education and learning. He joined the faculty of the Notre Dame Midsayap College and taught introductory courses on engineering.
“However, it seemed that a quiet life as an educator was not his destiny when he was approached by two big schools in Cotabato City to help them with the construction of their buildings. Seeing an opportunity to put his knowledge into practice, he established R.G. Salanatin Construction in 1967. These initial projects became the foundation of his reputation as a dependable contractor. Looking back he says, “In those days, if people know that you are a faculty member, your credibility increases. Suppliers trusted me because they trusted my credentials.”
“Mr. Salanatin added innovation to his credibility. He developed two strategies that would be the hallmark of his company: the Design & Build (D&B) construction scheme, and Easy-to-Pay (ETP) terms.
“D&B is a holistic approach to construction, offering the full suite of services from planning to design and the actual physical construction. This differs from the costly industry practice where owners first seek architects for the project design and then hire a builder.
“Mr. Salanatin also offered the ETP option which would require his clients to pay only 30-70% of the contract price upon the project’s completion. The balance would then be paid off monthly over a six to 24-month period. Again, this was not typical in the industry where a downpayment and periodic payments are the norm.
“”While the D&B and ETP proved very popular with clients, Mr. Salanatin also came up with other methodologies to increase construction work efficiency. He formulated a unique construction scheduling method for project managers and supervisors called Milestone dates, on top of the standard Time Bar Chart construction schedule. This was done to enhance overall efficiency on project completion.
“Mr. Salanatin also takes pride in having authored a handbook for construction supervisors. Based on his own experiences, this handbook serves as a best practices guide on how to become an efficient supervisor. He emphasizes the importance of completing a project on schedule with quality workmanship and within budget. He encourages construction supervisors to be committed to achieving these goals, as they largely determine the success of a project.
“With his methodic and pedagogic approach to his business it is not surprising that majority of R.G. Salanatin Construction Company’s clients are academic institutions. The company lists among its many projects educational structures, including libraries, gymnasiums, high school and grade school buildings, and faculty and student housing. “Learning has always been a part of my life,” he says with a smile. “From being a student, to a teacher, and now, as a builder of learning institutions. I help the country because I build schools, which is essential for education.”
“Having established the company’s reputation in the Cotabato region, Mr. Salanatin relocated to Davao in 1980, aspiring to become one of the five leading construction companies there. With determination, he was able to build up his company in Davao in less than five years. The company is now looking to expand further in the country, eyeing the Visayas region for potential opportunities.
“Still a teacher at heart, Mr. Salanatin encourages aspiring entrepreneurs to do their best while still in school. He says, “Always strive for excellence even as a student. It is a person’s innate competence that will define his level of self-confidence. And you can’t be a true leader or manager without confidence.”
”The Entrepreneur Of The Year Philippines 2010 is sponsored by SAP Philippines. The official airline is KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. Media sponsors are BusinessWorld and the ABS-CBN News Channel. This year’s winners will be announced on October 12, 2010 at an awards banquet at the Makati Shangri-La Hotel. The Entrepreneur Of The Year Philippines will represent the country in the World Entrepreneur Of The Year 2010 in Monte Carlo, Monaco in June 2011.”

A highly technical but easy to operate and less-costly communication system that integrates advanced technologies including the use of satellite promises to complete the odyssey of Davao into becoming a 21st century city. It is called the Taxi Fleet Dispatching and Management System or TFDMS which will complement the central 911 nerve center, the traffic signalization and the installation of closed circuit television (CCTV) in making Davao the safest and most secured city in the Philippines.
The TFDMS is being introduced to the city government and taxi cab companies with the by Steve Lin, executive director of Eurekard Philippines, the solution provider. Lin arrived in Davao to talk to the city authorities and interested taxi operators to explain how the system works and the advantages that the general public, the taxi companies and the government will derive from the dispatching system.
Davao to be first
Lin said TFDMS integrates the following advanced technologies – automatic vehicle locational (AVL) equipment, satellite positioning system (GPS), GSM/GPRS mobile communication, geographic information system (GIS), intelligent dispatching pattern and call center management system.
Escorted by lawyer Ramon Edison Batacan and land transportation expert Rene Tababa, Lin and Gerry Huang went to see 911 chief Verner Monsanto and observed briefly the sophisticated operation of the city’s 911 nerve center and later conferred with taxi operators, including businessman Ram Purswani, who’s interested to get the system for the Mindanao-wide dispatching of his fleet of passenger vans.
Once operational here, Lin said Davao City would be the first to have a TFDMS, which would be a tremendous boost to its reputation as a modern city, where one can do business and move around fast assured of safety and convenience.
He rattled off some of the advantages of the system as faster and systematic dispatch of taxicabs, decongestion of traffic and economy in gas because taxis will just stay in a queuing station instead of running around aimlessly in search of passengers. Passengers of taxicabs connected to the system will be assured of fast and safe delivery as the movement and location of each cab are closely monitored. Belongings of passengers left in the vehicle will be easily retrieved. With TFDMS, it would be easy to locate positions of taxis. The system facilitates fast dispatch of alarm and reaction in case of emergencies.
As the monitoring activities are recorded, it would be easy to report crime incidents and facilitate solution. Davao City operators I are the first to be offered the service because the local terrain is ideal for the system unlike Manila which is divided into several cities and jurisdictions and so many people of diverse interests to talk to, Lin said.
Lin, who’s a Taiwanese-American, is in technical partnership with Chunghwa Telecom Co. Ltd, “the PLDT of Taiwan.” He said he has already met with some Davao operators to explain the system and the business model to be used by TFDMS here.

Cheeseburger in paradise.
Cheeseburger in paradise.
Medium rare with mustard would be nice.
Heaven on earth with an onion slice.
I’m just a cheeseburger in paradise.
– Jimmy Buffet
One of the best things about Davao City is that you can buy a decent meal for less than a hundred bucks- drinks and sides included. Davao denizens have always been proud of the city’s long list of restaurants and diners offering delicious meals at rock-bottom prices. Simply put, Davao City is paradise for food-lovers!
Recently, I have acquired a liking for cheeseburger. I have tried McDonald’s home delivery service and ordered my fair share of McDonald’s tasty cheeseburgers. Oh well, I also have chicken and soda and large fries and sundae with it, if I am to be honest. ;-)
But if you’re going to ask me what’s the best value-for-money cheeseburger in the city, my answer might surprise you. I don’t know what yours is but my definition of a value-for-money cheeseburger is flavorful cheeseburger with a good price attached to it. So I’m saying that the best value-for-money cheeseburger in Davao City is not McDonald’s. Not Space Burger’s. Not even the 100% beef charbroiled burger from Brothers Burger. And certainly not Big Al’s.
If there is a Hamburger Competition, I say Harley Blvd Motor Cafe’s Cheeseburger wins the best value-for-money cheeseburger category hands down. The patty is thick and succulent and they certainly don’t scrimp on the cheese either. They serve the cheeseburger open-faced and you’ll see that that ingredients are nothing fancy- just the right stuff to give ooompphh to that reliable ol’ cheeseburger goodness!

Priced at Php60 per order, Harley’s cheeseburger is a delicious, reasonably priced meal you’ll surely enjoy even without sides or fixins. I had it when I watched 2012 and wolfing down huge chunks of the cheeseburger was the best thing about that movie experience. Lolssss.
Harley Blvd Motor Cafe is a 9-week old food joint located at the corner of Juan Luna and Juan Dela Cruz Sts., Davao City (also a short walk from the Ateneo de Davao University Jacinto gate). It is owned and managed by the husband and wife team of Sam and Joy. Must-haves at the cafe are the cheeseburgers, chicken wings, and the omelettes.

DAVAO City Mayor Sara Duterte is set to deliver her State of the City Address (Soca) to mark her 100 days in office.
Duterte took her oath of office on June 30 and would mark her 100th day on October 8. Duterte said through an address she would detail the current state of the city.
"Our intention is to give a Soca that is being prepared now. It will detail all statistics from all departments dinhi sa syudad sa (here in the city of) Davao, our financial status, and our projection for 2011," the mayor said in an interview at Osmeña park on Monday.
Duterte said she has also prepared a set of priorities in the following months. These include those in the Barog Agenda, which focuses on health, education, peace and order, and the barangays.
Barog is acronym for empowered barangays, academics, resources, order, and governance.
"(My stance is) to empower the barangays to become self-sufficient, independent. For academics, do something about our alternative learning system. Ang kadaghanan sa ilaha dili kaya ug standard schooling nga kadaadlaw musulod. Resources, under this are our tourism, investment promotion, and job generation. All our resources should be maximized. O for peace and order, and G is our government employees, improvement of social services," Duterte said in an interview on her first day of office.
Meanwhile, it is the practice of the Philippine Independent Church to release an annual "State of the Church" Address coming from the Supreme Bishop.

mCx2 October 4th, 2010, 05:43 PM ^^ Now I wanna stripped off regionalism and pray that Godly people will rise up in the cities of Davao, CDO, Cebu, Manila and other cities, in fact in the entire country to spread the word and love of God (not religion), we believe that right thinking and right believing and right faith is part of the solution of the problems we have at hand. If we have faithful and righteous people, then they will respect sex as an expression of love and not as a mere hobby and do it casually. If we have righteous politicians (not religious ones for we've seen alot of religious politicians but we're praying for righteous ones) then corruption will not be a problem at all, if we have God fearing CEOs and businessmen, then politicking will not be an issue. I know it's impossibility to zero out the current way of thinking that Filipinos have, but if we can effectually change a great number of the total population, then great change will be seen in the country. Change begins within us. Change begins in our thinking. Change begins in the source of our thinking. Change begins in what we believe in. Change begins in the god that u serve. Do u serve the god of this world? Or the true living God!

Budots October 5th, 2010, 03:32 AM Product inventory, promotions discussed in tourism meet
IN A recently held joint meeting of the Davao Region Tourism Council (DRTC) and the Davao Tourism Officers Association (DTOA), Department of Tourism (DOT) Davao Regional Director Art P. Boncato Jr. recommended exploring the use of new media as a means to reach out to traditional and potential markets.
"The future of tourism business as it is globally would be realized online and promotions via the internet with its many applications would be successfully viral," he said.
The purpose of the meeting was not only to meet the officers of the two regional umbrella organizations of the tourism industry but to also harmonize the efforts of the private sector and tourism officers from various LGUs in the region.
Earlier, both organizations requested for the meeting to also bare their remaining programs for 2010 and lay down 2011 tourism plans for DOT;s guidance, according to DTOA president Kristine Dompor.
"We are challenged by the call of the DOT that tourist destinations must be ready before they are positioned and promoted to our markets," DRTC president Mary Ann Montemayor, for her part, said.
The new Tourism Act of 2009 mandates all primary tourism destinations and services to be accredited with the DOT.
Establishments like hotels and resorts as well as tour guides, travel agencies and operators must comply with the standards before they will be promoted and endorsed by the government.
"We shall review tourism products in the region and assess their preparedness. We shall guide stakeholders towards accreditation," Boncato said.
The DOT will continue its regional consultations with leaders of the local government units and their private sector counterparts and contribute to the updating of the country's tourism masterplan.

I never wanted to argue again about faith and belief as part of a solution to change the people the way they think about sex, thus, preventing the spread of stds such as aids but since u brought up another topic, and im happy that u did just to clarify, then i ll just give a short answer but a lengthy quote from the book which u quoted. U see bro, when we read the bible, we dont read it by bits and pieces but the entire context.
Lemme post the entire chapter of the verse u quoted:
James 1
Greeting to the Twelve Tribes
1 James, a bondservant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,
To the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad:
Greetings.
Profiting from Trials
2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
9 Let the lowly brother glory in his exaltation, 10 but the rich in his humiliation, because as a flower of the field he will pass away. 11 For no sooner has the sun risen with a burning heat than it withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beautiful appearance perishes. So the rich man also will fade away in his pursuits.
12 Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. 14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.
16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. 18 Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.
19 So then,[a] my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; 20 for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.
21 Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; 24 for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. 25 But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.
26 If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless. 27 Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.
Then James 2
James 2
1 My brethren, do not hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with partiality. 2 For if there should come into your assembly a man with gold rings, in fine apparel, and there should also come in a poor man in filthy clothes, 3 and you pay attention to the one wearing the fine clothes and say to him, “You sit here in a good place,” and say to the poor man, “You stand there,” or, “Sit here at my footstool,” 4 have you not shown partiality among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts?
5 Listen, my beloved brethren: Has God not chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him? 6 But you have dishonored the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you and drag you into the courts? 7 Do they not blaspheme that noble name by which you are called?
8 If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,”[a] you do well; 9 but if you show partiality, you commit sin, and are convicted by the law as transgressors. 10 For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all.
11 For He who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.”[c]Now if you do not commit adultery, but you do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law. 12 So speak and so do as those who will be judged by the law of liberty. 13 For judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.
14 What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has[B] faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
18 But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your[d] works, and I will show you my faith by my[e] works. 19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble! 20 But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?[f] 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? 22 Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? 23 And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.”[g]And he was called the friend of God. 24 You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.
25 Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way?
26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
James was not focusing on religion. He was speaking about faith. He was discussing about good works and out from faith or the fruit of this faith are good works that Believers do or Godly characteristics. The entire chapter i quoted did not mention about following a certain religion or being religious - Catholicism, Baptist, Born Again Christian, Prostestants, Methodists, or what have u, it talked about faith and its result which is good works.
And noticed the underlined word "WORD" which He mentioned over and over again? It talked about the gospel of Christ.
And in Romans 1:16 written by Paul, by the way to those who didnt know, Paul who used to be Saul is reponsible for bringing the gospel to the Gentiles or non Jews:
Romans 1:16 (NEW LIVING TRANSLATION)
For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes—the Jew first and also the Gentile.
The bible did not say that religion saves. The modern day definition of religion based on people's actions is doing our best to reach God, thus we have religious sects, religious activities, religious groups - it's all about working and trying to be saved or thinking that a particular group can save. Salvation comes only from faith in Jesus Christ, through believing in Him, and works come out as a fruit of ur faith. We are saved by faith through grace. And the bible is clear about that.
And let's look closely at the verse u quoted:
Jam 1:27 Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world. [NKJV]
Now let's go back in time and define the world's definition of religion and some bible accounts of "religion".
The word religion came from the Greek word threskeia which means an external display of worship. In context with James 1:26-27 religion means a behavior pattern designed to exhibit one’s beliefs or actions which are fruits of what he believes in.
When we really look at the biblical usage of the word "religion" you will see it is seldom used with any positive implication, but generally has a negative connotation. When Paul traveled to Athens he observed an abundance of idols, even an idol to the "unknown god," lest they might have missed any. Paul stands up and declares, "Men of Athens, I observe that you are very religious in all respects" (Acts 17:22). What does Paul mean by referring to their pervasive idolatry as being "religious?" Well, the Greek word that Paul used was deisidaimon, which is derived from two other Greek words: deido, meaning "to fear or respect," and daimon, the word for "demon."
What Paul was saying was that he had observed that they had "great fear or respect for demons," and were very religious and superstitious. Festus used the same Greek word to refer to the Jewish religion, when he explained to King Agrippa that the Jews who brought charges against Paul "had some points of disagreement with him about their own religion" (Acts 25:19). In his epistle to the Colossians, Paul was confronting the regional religionism of Asia as well as the Judaizing religionism that constantly followed his ministry. He wanted to show the superiority of the gospel of grace in Jesus Christ over all religion. In referring to the moralistic activities that religionists were attempting to impose upon the Christian believers in Colossae, Paul asks, "Why do you submit yourself to decrees, such as 'Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch!'? These are matters which have the appearance of wisdom in self-made religion and self-abasement and severe treatment of the body, but are of no value against fleshly indulgence" (Col 2:20-23). The word translated "religion" is the Greek word ethelothreskia, which is a combination of two other Greek words: ethelo meaning "will, desire, delight or pleasure," and threskeia meaning "worship or religion." Paul is describing such moralistic religious actions as "will-worship" of "self-made religion;" activities which man imposes upon himself and others, believing that such willed self-effort serves as a benefit before God in moralistic performance. Paul denies the veracity of such thinking, regarding such as mere "self-made religion," and of no benefit against the selfish patterns of fleshly indulgence.
James explains that, "If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man's religion is worthless" (James 1:26,27). The Greek word that he uses is threskeia, meaning "worship or religion." Misinterpreting the character of God in our behavior often indicates that we are engaging in "worthless religion." James continues, though, to use threskeia in a positive way when he refers to "pure and undefiled religion" (James 1:27), wherein the worth-ship of God's character is genuinely expressed in practical ministry to orphans and widows, and in the expression of the purity of God's character. In that case genuine Christian worship shows as we are receptive to the activity of God and express the worth-ship of His character in our behavior.
Romans 1:16 (NEW LIVING TRANSLATION)
For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes—the Jew first and also the Gentile.
And the bible was clear and consistent what can and who can save us. Faith in Jesus Christ. Good works follow as its fruit or outcome of what u believe in.
John 5:39-40 (New Living Translation)
“You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me! 40 Yet you refuse to come to me to receive this life.
Ephesians 2:8-10 (New Living Translation)
"For by GRACE you have been saved through FAITH; and that not of yourselves, it is a gift of God; not as result of WORKS, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for GOOD WORKS, which God PREPARED BEFOREHAND so that we would WALK IN THEM.
Anyway, as what I mentioned in my previous posts, I recognize that this is not the right platform for discussion about topic such as this so if u want to talk more about it, u have my facebook below, shoot me a msg there. Thanks.
And to the mods, u can delete all the discussions about "Christ" if it violates the rules, it all started out as a reply to someone when he discounted the fact that faith also plays a major role in preventing the spreads of stds. He posted his views, I posted mine. I'm tired of arguments for it leads to nothing. No one wins, no one loses.
I dont know if he is doing his part though, I know I am doing mine through having our call center ministry and youth groups that teach call center agents and other industry based professionals about the Word of God.
I'm very much sensitive of the topic at hand coz this is the industry I am in. And we respond through doing by not just distributing quick fix "condoms", we're not pushing our faith to someone else but we have groups that talk and introduce the love of Christ to people in the industry.
We show them love, we show them acceptance, through Christ and not through religion. And we are seeing the outcome of it. To those who are in Metro Manila, u can visit our group's quarterly meet up at GCF in Ortigas Center "The GCF Call Center Ministry" and for those who are working or living around Global City u can join us every Friday @ Market Market and sometimes in Serendra or Highstreet for The League's weekly praise and worship gathering (normally in our hub @ Word Center and sometimes in FullyBooked - Bonifacio Highstreet or Starbucks in Serendra). It's a gathering of young professionals and call center professionals for Jesus Christ. Our VCF counter parts have their life groups too and they normally meet up every weekend. Again, we meet up and welcome people regardless of the denomination their with, congregation they're part of, or name of their local churches.
And I pray that such groups will also rise in Davao City.
We're not religious as common people defines Christianity. But we fellowship, we party, we gather, we run, we live life for Jesus Christ - and other more important things follow like financial planning, taking responsibilities, understanding grace, living life....
We're not one of those that distribute condoms. We distribute change. Change through Christ.
And to DavaoGuy2, I'm happy that u are a believer, but bro, may u know the real story of redemption, that it is not religion that saved u, Jesus did.
And to mcx2, I'll pray for u.

Source (http://www.businessmirror.com.ph/home/companies/2036-phinma-property-unit-may-go-public-in-2011)
Phinma Property Holdings Corp., a developer of affordable homes, is reviving a plan to hold an initial public offering (IPO) next year to take advantage of the stock market’s surge.
Willie Uy, Phinma Properties president and chief executive officer, told the BusinessMirror that the company plans to undertake as many as 14 new projects, some of which will be located in previously untapped markets in the Visayas and Mindanao, before proceeding with the IPO.
Uy did not provide financial figures for the planned fund-raising measure, as the developer has yet to select an underwriter. Prior to the global financial crisis in 2008, Phinma Properties was projecting to raise about P1 billion from an initial share sale.
“We are now studying an IPO carefully. But we would like to do it within 2011 and we would like to do it while the market is hot,” Uy said in an interview.
“It seems the market is receptive to new IPOs and Phinma Properties has a good story,” he added.
The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange Index recently breached the 4,000 level, an all-time high, and some analysts expect the market’s main barometer to top 5,000 by the end of next year.
Phinma Properties, which is 35.3- percent owned by publicly listed Phinma Corp., has been focusing on mid-rise condominium developments within Metro Manila, selling units priced from below P1 million to P1.8 million.
Demand for these units remains strong with the company forecasting to increase full year profits to P195 million, from P132.19 million in 2009.. Uy said this profit would result from projected revenue which is expected to improve from last year’s P1.3 billion, mainly from real-estate sales.
The property developer has also been adding new projects to the pipeline, as it is “fast running out of inventory” on the back of robust domestic sales.
Uy said the company recently launched Asya Enclaves Alabang, a 3.5-hectare development in Muntinlupa City featuring three-gated Asian-themed residential condominium communities, which will be developed over the next two-and-a- half years.
Asya Enclaves will offer a total of about 1,800 units, he said.
Moreover, the company is close to acquiring two new properties, each under three hectares, in Quezon City and near the Parañaque area.
Uy added that the developer is also likely to proceed with pending joint -venture deals in Cebu and Davao City to jumpstart its expansion outside Luzon.
“The market is right for us to come in. The price range of condominiums in Davao is similar to Metro Manila prices so if we introduce our projects there, it will be advantageous,” he said.
Phinma Properties’ main mid-rise community developments include Fountain Breeze in Sucat, Parañaque and Quezon City developments Floro Vista in Commonwealth Avenue and Sofia Bellevue in Capital Hills Drive.
It also has low-cost horizontal communities in Cavite and Laguna and upscale townhouse projects near Forbes Park in Makati City and in Quezon City.
The company reported via its website that said it has built over 7,000 condominium units in Metro Manila.

Seafood is teeming in the Philippines. In Siargao island, I feasted on the freshest catch of the day. When I got back to Davao, my brother-in-law and sister brought me to this no-frills, open-air Liza's restaurant on Times Beach where the bounties of the sea reign supreme. It's cheap, it's good, and I'm not supposed to complain. But if this is the way I'm fed while I'm here - including carbs masquerading inside coconut leaves called puso, I'm afraid I'll be gaining weight faster than an American on a McDonald's diet.

Sara gets high ratings in performance survey
Monday, 04 October 2010 00:00
PDF
http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/9623/e3issue31cover.jpg (http://img525.imageshack.us/i/e3issue31cover.jpg/)
THE 8’s fell like rain, closely followed by the 7’s. The 8’s and the 7’s were actually high ratings given by Dabawenyos to Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio’s performance during the first 100 days of the 32-year old who assumed office on July 1, 2010.
The positive ratings were in answer to an opinion survey conducted by Edge Davao, October 1-2 among city residents on what they think about the policies, statements actions made by the lady mayor---“Inday Sara” to many---during the first 100 days (actually 92 days when the survey was conducted).
The numbers
The question was: “On a scale of 1 to 10, the highest being 10, how do you rate the performance of Mayor Sara Duterte during her first 100 days in office?” The survey, conducted by text messages sent through mobile phone also encouraged respondents to comment on what they like, what they do not like about the mayor’s performance, and also what they want her to do during the rest of her three-year term covering a little over 1,000 days up to June 30, 2013.
The survey was confidential and a respondent’s identity not divulged.
Out of the 128 mobile phone owners who were asked the question, only 79 responded to the opinion poll. However, of these, 36, or 47 percent, rated Sara’s performance “8” or above (one rated her “9”), while 24 respondents, or 30 percent, gave her “7”. The remaining 19 respondents gave her “6” or “5.” Only one gave her a “4.”
The comments
As shown by the different comments “texted” in by the cellphone owners, the young city executive appeared to have impressed the survey respondents with her “tough” and “determined” stance on many public issues.
A retired business executive said he liked most “ the handling by the mayor of the Abreeza and uso-uso incidents,” referring to the accident at the Abreeza construction site and the uso-uso jeep-softdrink truck collision in Barangay Bago Aplaya which cost the lives of ten passengers and serious injuries to several others.
Other actions of Mayor Sara that impressed this particular survey participant was the defusing of the Paquibato “pangayaw” threat, her quick and positive reaction to the surge of dengue cases, assistance to fire victims, her firm stand to retain Lyka Lopez as her chosen city administrator in the wake of criticisms. The respondent said the mayor’s quick and hands-on reaction, and “being all over the place” created the impression that the mayor is “industrious.” He said that in the future, he wished the mayor would always be “pro-active” and “preemptive.”
What they like
A lady entrepreneur who rated Sara “9”, the highest rating given in the survey, said, “Her not being a politician makes her almost perfect. Give her free reign, she’ll make a perfect 10.”
An artist, who gave her “8”, said “she’s a hands-on mayor, a woman by heart, but is capable of making tough decisions. Takes a lot of guts to manage a city as big and diverse as Davao.”
Giving her a rating of “8”, another lady respondent credits Inday Sara for her “choice of young department heads like Robbie (Alabado), Jason (Magnaye), Bong (Aportadera) and Lyka (Lopez), her scholarship program and economic projects.”
“I approve of Inday’s less combat anti-insurgency policy and hard stance versus terrorism and criminality, her support of the tenement housing program, health and sanitation and solid waste management,” texted a veteran reporter covering the police and military beat.
A doctor of education had this to say: “I like all the actions, policies and statements made by Mayor Sara.”
Television anchor person: “I like her decision to pursue tenement housing instead of the calumbarium project; the creation of the Traffic Eagles squad, the dengue express lane inside city hall and the removal of “excess” personnel in the different departments.”
A poultry raiser and president of an association of scholars and travel grantees thinks that Sara was right in taking away the subsidy from a military unit, the installation of Robbie Alabado as city planning and development office (CPDO) coordinator and Lyka Lopez as administrators. He said it is also for the good of the public if Mayor Sara took positions “not always in accord with RRD” (referring to Vice Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte, Sara’s father.
A real estate broker said he appreciated Mayor Sara’s serious effort to promote Davao City to investors.
Another lady respondent said: “The young Duterte has shown political will.”
A prominent business leader, former president of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc., thinks that Mayor Sara is very determined and has very bright economic ideas and herself very receptive to grand plans. She’s always on time for appointments and a quick decision-maker.
A female executive of a banana company said she rated Sara “7” because “for me, she is fairing well as city mayor and has already made many decisions and calls that are not ‘trapo’.” She added: “I like it that she is very development-minded, progressive thinking, and I look forward to Davao growing by leaps and bounds under her mayorship.”
A veteran broadcaster who gave the mayor a high rating of 8, however, thinks that “she needs emphasis with facial expressions to drive her point. She’s very feminine, she needs a stage director. “To effect instant change, sometimes a leader must learn to employ the magic cuss words.”
A reporter at the city hall-city council beat listed the things that impressed her: Sara’s verbal orders on improving city government’s service, upland development, dengue assistance, strong mandate against drugs, criminality; prioritized traffic, garbage, and flooding; personally handling relative to new investments; no to coal power plant; protect watershed area, and creation of the traffic eagle squad.
A veteran city councilor lauded Sara for getting tough on traffic violators. “The statements that I like ..”I am ordering law enforcers to use the full force of the law to apprehend abusive, reckless drunken drivers and to remove illegal payong-payong tricycles off the streets.”
What they don’t like
While majority of the comments could warm the heart of the mayor, there were some statements that were critical of her.
A gentleman who generously gave her a high rating of “8” said the mayor should stop the killings, gangster-ism, illegal gambling, street flooding due to poor drainage system, and uncollected garbage.
The reporter who earlier praised her criticized her for her “lukewarm resistance to vigilante killings.”
A resident of GSIS Matina said Mayor Sara should give jobs to the guys who campaigned for her during the elections because they really worked and “are not 15-30 workers,” referring to those who only go to the city government to collect their pay every 15th and 30th of the month without really working.
A number of texters want the mayor to give back the jobs of displaced workers, continue her support for the police, give livelihood to the poor, and build a new building to replace the old, dilapidated city hall building.
A lady respondent said she did not like Sara’s position on the water code, which prioritizes watershed without energy using the Talomo-Panigan-Tamugan river system, her slow action on the garbage problem and her perceived conflict with Vice Mayor Rody.
“Although she is benevolent, her programs and focus are not well-directed.
Wish list
The respondents wish Mayor Sara to promote corporate social responsibility (CSR), give more livelihood to women, promote gulayan ng bayan in barangays, build a coastal road.
An old-timer in the city said landowners like him have high hopes that the political will that Mayor Sara has shown so far would be applied on several tracts of highly valuable lands inside the city that are squatted upon and cannot not be used for business activities because of the so-called informal settlers.
Citing the lands near the old Sta. Ana Pier, he said, the settlers have occupied the lots for decades and made the land practically worthless for their owners.
He said the helpless landowners are hoping the new mayor could start the development of Sta, Ana into a very productive area of investment after ownership and management of the pier is transferred from the Philippine Ports Authority.
A close examination of the survey results suggests that Sara is more popular with the senior citizens who are men, and young as well as mature women respondents. [AMA]

MtApoStandard October 6th, 2010, 05:33 AM there was a press release over last year of davao's inclusion in the shortlisted locations for a british aerospace manufacturing facility in asia. if i remember it correctly, it was the board of investment davao chief dureza who made the announcement. its a concern this opportunity will be politicised if the present head of davao investment office will not work hard to get this investment. hope they will not sleep and wait for this to come to its office doors otherwise theyll wake up outsmarted again by political maneuverings up there with another missed opportunity. if the local head officer fails to deliver performance short of expectations, might as well step down from his office, i guess. must realise that davao, philippines competed with such locations as china and vietnam.
UK’s B/E Aerospace to set up shop in RP Facility to turn out aircraft cabin interiors
By Jerry E. Esplanada
Philippine Daily Inquirer

OUT OF 32 countries worldwide, the Philippines has been chosen as the site of an aircraft interiors manufacturing facility of British firm B/E Aerospace Inc., the British Embassy in Manila yesterday announced.
With an initial investment of $30 million, the company plans to use the plant to build galleys for the Airbus A350 XWB widebody aircraft, British Ambassador to Manila Stephen Lillie said yesterday.
B/E Aerospace has a multibillion-dollar contract with Airbus Industries.
“Completed galley units will be shipped to Marseilles (France) and then to Toulouse (also in France) where the Airbus A350 XWB will be assembled,” Lillie said.
The envoy described the announcement to be a piece of “good news” for the country because it would create more than 300 new jobs.
“We hope the new Philippine administration will take pro-active measures to create a more attractive investment climate ... so that there will be even more projects like this,” Lillie said.
The envoy welcomed the “major manufacturing investment,” saying that he was “delighted the British Embassy’s trade and investment team was able to assist a top-quality UK company like B/E Aerospace in identifying options for locating in the Philippines.”
“(This) shows that the Philippines offers opportunities for business success not only in the service sector but also in manufacturing,” he added.
B/E Aerospace is the world’s leading manufacturer of aircraft cabin interior products, as well as the global leader in aerospace fasteners and consumables, said the British Embassy.
The company also designs, develops and manufactures a broad range of products for commercial aircraft and business jets. Early this year, Lillie flew to London to promote the Philippines to British firms.
Next month, UK Trade and Investment director Derek Page will do the same during his meeting with British executives in Bristol, Newcastle and Hinckley.
In the past 10 years, UK investments in the country reached GBP 9.7 billion.
Lillie has been pushing for “greater trade relations” between the United Kingdom and the Philippines.
Balance of trade between the two countries “remains in favor of the Philippines with a ratio of 3:1,” according to a British Embassy fact sheet.
Last year, UK exports to Manila totaled GBP 258 million, an increase of 11 percent over 2008 figures. On the other hand, Britain’s imports in 2009 were GBP 373 million, a drop of 38 percent.
In terms of its share in world exports to the Philippines, the UK is currently in 15th place after Japan, the United States and countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
About 200 British firms do business in the country. They include Unilever, Anglo-American, Shell, HSBC., Standard Chartered, M&S, Speedo, Dunhill, Debenhams, Topshop, and Warehouse Burberry.
xzibit31 October 6th, 2010, 05:51 AM nice road shot junax! is that extra lane on the side a parking lane or a taxi lane
it should be an access road from the exit of the airport property to the entrance of the airport property. but since nobody is using it, the airport management allowed taxis to park at one side of the road so as not to cause traffic and havoc inside the airport. by the way its a two lane access road.

Aboitiz' proposed coal-fired power plant in Davao City
by Inday Sara Duterte on Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at 5:21am
Aboitiz is proposing a USD$400-million coal-fired power plant to be constructed in the city within the next three to four years starting 2011. Aboitiz also answered to queries on the environmental implications of a coal-fired power plant in the city, to which he assured the coal plant would be "clean".
The coal plant (set for construction here) would be designed to use a 'clean coal technology'. There would be no smoke.
Clean Coal Technology
Clean coal technology, according to the Wikipedia, is a term used to describe <span>technologies</span> being developed that aim to reduce theenvironmental impact of coal energy generation. It implies that it is possible to make coal a fuel source that is free of (or very low in) carbondioxide emissions and other pollutant emissions.
Some of the techniques that would be used to accomplish this include chemically washing minerals and impurities from the coal, gasification, treating the flue gases with steam to remove sulfur dioxide, carboncapture and storage technologies to capture the carbon dioxide from the flue gas and dewatering lower rank coals (brown coals) to improve the calorific value, and thus the efficiency of the conversion into electricity.

heathy environment is subjective if hardship is still there. it is not the priority of a household to to spend time maintaining its own surroundings clean and take responsibility of other peoples mess. the symptom is overt in the city it cannot be ignored. these people need opportunities to improve their living standards. only direct investment inflow can open up job opportunities bec governemtn cannot afford it. that problem was left to explode this big and governemnt is helpless now. this investmen opens floodgate of investment opportunities in the near future

If I were to decide I'd go for it for the ''time being''. Lately our so-called renewable energy source and ever reliable hydroelectric powerplants have become unstable, thanks to droughts. MOst countries are still using coal Power plants especially the emerging economies. No stable power generation results to poor production. Coal is cheap and cuts production cost. Most renewable energy sources except for hydroelectric are not very reliable-to cite solar power generation. But we should really have a debate regarding Nuclear power as a source of energy. Now this one takes time to build.Meantime please use coal to turn on your light bulbs.:lol

Budots October 7th, 2010, 03:19 AM Davao officials worried over proposed Aboitiz coal power plant
By Germelina Lacorte | Thursday| October 7, 2010 | Filed under: Top Stories
DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/6 Oct) — Some officials are wary over the plan of Aboitiz Power Corporation to put up a 200-megawatt coal-fired plant in the city.
Councilor Pilar Braga, the chair of the city council committee on energy and transportation, said she looks forward to the company’s formal proposal so that the city council could start scrutinizing its possible impact in Davao City.
“They said they have new technology,” said Braga. “But we still have to see how good it is because they are proposing coal, and the perception is that it is not clean,” she said.
Erramon Aboitiz, Aboitiz Power president and chief executive officer, announced to reporters Tuesday that the company plans to put up a P15-billion coal-fired plant within the next three years to address the looming power shortage in Mindanao.
Davao City has been known for its environment-friendly legislations and for its staunch refusal to pollutive industries.
The plan to put up a coal-fired plant comes at the time when most of the developed economies are phasing out the coal mines.
Coal has been blamed as the top contributor of greenhouse gases that cause global warming.
Aboitiz said putting up a coal-powered plant will help address the projected power shortfall in Mindanao by 2014.
He also said the company is using “clean” technology that will greatly reduce harmful emissions.
Aboitiz said only a coal-fired plant can be built fast enough, and at a very affordable rate, to address the projected 480-megawatt power shortfall in Mindanao in the next three years.
The company plans to tap the coal supply from Kalimantan, Indonesia, which is very close to Mindanao.
Top executives of Aboitiz Power and Aboitiz-owned Davao Light and Power Company and Hedcor had met up with Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and some councilors before they announced the proposal to the media.
“I won’t stand to say there would be no problem in the environment; there is,” Aboitiz said in a press briefing. “But just like what we do with cars, we reduce our carbon footprints. But we can’t totally eliminate them.”
He also said that the company will tap the technology they use in their Cebu coal-powered plant to reduce the pollutive effects.
Braga said the vice mayor seemed to favor the proposal.
But she said the city council will await the company’s formal proposal asking for the city council’s endorsement for the project.
“We hope they can do it fast so that we can subject it to the council’s regular grind,” she said.
“I’m in favor of an energy mix — hydropower and other renewable energies, like geothermal — but this is new,” Braga said, referring to coal. “We still have to see how good it is.”
Earlier, Mayor Sara Duterte said a coal-fired plant, like mining, would not be welcome in the city.
“Just like mining, it will only give us more problems in the long term,” she told reporters during a regular briefing at City Hall.
Aboitiz said a coal-fired plant serves as a faster and more affordable answer to the looming power shortfall projected in Mindanao in 2014. Business leaders and exporters had earlier expressed concern over the projected power shortage without new power capacity being put up in Southern Mindanao, one of the biggest power consumers in the island. DSWD opens 1st search for child-friendly police station in Davao City
Davao City (7 October) -- Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Regional Director Ester Acebedo-Versoza has opened the table for nomination of police stations as entries to the Search for Child-Friendly Police Station.
Being piloted in Davao City, the Search entries considered for evaluation are those endorsed by City Mayor Sarah Duterte, Versoza said as she explained that member agencies of the Regional Sub-Committee for the Welfare of Children (RSCWC) will assess the entries.
DSWD takes the lead in conducting the Search being the chair of the technical working group of RSCWC.
The first of its kind in the country, the Search came about through the initiative of Police Regional Office XI which endorsed a proposal sometime in 2004 to RSCWC to institutionalize child-friendliness in police stations.
To formulate the Search tool/instrument, a series of consultation was then made among selected police officers from cities and provinces of the region and with non-government organizations (NGOs) working for children and with child representatives.
The Search aims to encourage community people to participate in activities initiated by police officers; encourage healthy environment of the community comfort room for boys & girls, clean & healthy surroundings; guarantee safe, protective place for every child; raise police morale/achievement; extend assistance and support to children.
In a media forum, Versoza was looking at the Search as a way of changing public perception regarding police authorities and, at the same time, make them observe the standards of child-friendliness.
"This can change the perception of the public. Sila mga amigo natin," she said referring to police authorities.
Versoza explained the rationale of holding it first in Davao City saying the Search would have a high chance of being successful as Davao City Police had been known to be among the best performing police office nationwide.
"This will serve as an inspiration to other areas," she said while baring out plans of conducting the Search regionwide next year to cover police stations in cities and municipalities.
More than just looking at the way police officers are treating children in conflict with the law (CICL) or those in need of special protection, the Search will "assess the existing structure, facilities, and personnel complement of police stations/precincts."
It will review the capability, competence and skills of our police force in handling CICL that eventually would improve and sustain the quality of child-friendly service of the Police Station in terms of physical set-up and procedures.

Davao officials worried over proposed Aboitiz coal power plant
By Germelina Lacorte | Thursday| October 7, 2010 | Filed under: Top Stories
DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/6 Oct) — Some officials are wary over the plan of Aboitiz Power Corporation to put up a 200-megawatt coal-fired plant in the city.
“I won’t stand to say there would be no problem in the environment; there is,” Aboitiz said in a press briefing. “But just like what we do with cars, we reduce our carbon footprints. But we can’t totally eliminate them.”
Business leaders and exporters had earlier expressed concern over the projected power shortage without new power capacity being put up in Southern Mindanao, one of the biggest power consumers in the island. its hypocrisy to pretend environmental awareness and vigilance sees only the preconceived ideas of a technology dating back years past. a worrying green house gas emissions are there in the decomposing wastes and open sewers scattered all around slum communities. clean up intervention is only superficial, temporary reprieve. deterioration of sanitation will keep coming back if the poverty is still there. the situation isnt any better either. addressing poverty would be a direction to focus on and not closing the doors of opportunities for these people living in poverty. the blights you see all around you have been there and keeps on growing faster than opportunities could accommodate. the government is helpless and sounds hopeless how it can stop the ticking clock from moving becaus its getting out of control. there is a urgent need to start from somewhere as soon as possilble. bold action is long overdue. this investment is the fisrt step in the right direction. my 2 cents

MtApoStandard October 7th, 2010, 05:03 AM Aboitiz to Build Coal Power Plant in Davao
By Mai Gevera
October 7, 2010, 8:22am
Davao City (7 October) -- Instead of putting in more hydropower plants, Aboitiz Power announced its plans for energy source diversification by building a 200 megawatt circulating fluidized-bed coal power plant in the city.
President of Aboitiz Power Erramon Aboitiz laid out the company's plans for a coal plant expected to start operation by the middle of 2014.
Even without bilateral contract with wholesale buyers, Aboitiz Power is decided to take risks in building the said plant.
"The company sees a coal plant as the best source of electricity from the standpoint of reliability, affordability, and safety," said Aboitiz.
Known for building hydropower plants, the company opted to develop an entirely new energy source after realizing that hydropower dependency is highly vulnerable to weather conditions.
The company president clarified that existing hydropower plants will continue operation alongside the construction of the coal plant, its largest investment to date.
He also sees a significant impact on electricity rates given that the cost of coal is substantially lower than fuel oil. Coal as energy source is estimated to cost up to P5 kph, while fuel oil runs at P6 kph, the least.
Aboitiz also assures the people in Davao for a cleaner and more efficient coal fuel generation brought about by new technologies.
Unlike the previous image of coal power, recent technologies now ensure a cleaner, low sulfur emission.
Aboitiz, too, guarantees that operations will all be guided by strict international and Philippines' environmental, safety, and health standards.
Instead of building the coal plant in some other parts of Mindanao, the company decided to have it based in Davao City.
Davao is the biggest user of power in Mindanao, thus, it is best to build sufficient power plants in the city to ensure power supply security," he said.
Aboitiz also finds building the plant in Davao as most economical since they no longer need to build new transmission lines because the source is already in the city itself.
Social and economic benefits are promised to the city and its people. This guarantees Aboitiz Power to invest more than P15 billion for the plant and a regular employment for up to 200 people. (PIA-XI)

tj_brewed October 7th, 2010, 07:01 AM SLLI unveils six new projects for rest of 2010 (http://www.malaya.com.ph/10072010/property4.html)
Publicly-listed Sta. Lucia land Inc. (SLLI) has announced its new projects to be launched for the remainder of 2010.
The company plans to open projects all over the country, particularly the fast developing areas of Davao, Cavite and Cainta, Rizal.
SLLI will launch South Grove in Davao, Luxurre Residences in Alfonzo Cavite near Tagaytay; Mesilo Residences, and Sugarland Residential Estates located in Trece Martires in Cavite, respectively.
The company will also be starting the East Bel-Air Residences in Cainta and expansion developments creating the Sta. Lucia City out of its Sta. Lucia Grand Mall development, also in Cainta.
SLLI president Exequiel D. Robles said, "We are launching these projects before the year ends to answer the needs for quality realty projects of the public in these areas.
We received good feedback from our previous projects that we intend to keep on doing what we do best in all our real estate developments."
SLLI disclosed that South Grove in Davao is a 17-hectare high end residential development joint venture with landowner JS Gaizano, Incorporated.
The French inspired Luxurre Residences in Alfonso, Cavite is a 10-hectare residential and commercial development which is near other high-end real estate developments such as Splendido Taal Towers and Royal Tagaytay. This newest project is a joint venture with SJ Properties and is just beside the Oratory of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Monte Maria.
The Mesilo Residences in Dasmariñas, Cavite is a 150-hectare joint venture project with JAKA properties. The project’s phase one, in Mesilo Residences is a 30-hectare Filipino contemporary residential development along Aguinaldo highway.
Another Cavite project, Sugarland Residential Estates in Trece Martires is an 80-hectare residential development with an American contemporary style. This is SLLI’s joint venture with Highpoint Property Group.
In the condominium development area, SLLI has lined up two big projects: the East Bel-Air Residences and the, much-awaited Sta. Lucia City, both in Cainta.
East Bel-Air Residences is a six-building mid-rise development with country club along Imelda Avenue in Cainta.
Sta. Lucia City is a five-building, one hectare expansion to SLLI’s already vast Sta. Lucia Grand Mall. This phase will include the first two mid-rise condominium buildings of five that are architecturally designed by W.W. Coscoluella.
"SLLI also currently has some projects in the planning stage and we guarantee that the public can look forward to more state-of-the-art realty developments from us that suit their every need and lifestyle," Robles said.
Rajah_Soliman October 7th, 2010, 07:40 AM ontario has it's own wind farm but it is not producing power at a critical time. one time when winds were blowing at over 100kph, it came at a time where it was not needed much, ON A WEEKEND!
the only thing i like about the wind turbines is that they brighten up the (otherwise) boring autobahns ....
and here's more: enormous amount of fossil-fuel is needed to build those stuffs... :bash: the energy they would generate is not even enough to recover and compensate for the energy used in their production :bash:

Early Origin
Founder, Lim Tian Siu, grew up in Chin Kang, Fukien, China in 1919. At 14, he sailed for Manila earning his keep as a cigarette factory worker until he was promoted as a sales agent. Manila was then a promise land for migrants and he was able to survive and harvest its fruits together with a growing family. When war broke out in Manila on December, 1941, the Lim family moved out of city, which was heavily occupied with Japanese forces and, settled at the outskirts cultivating a piece of land saved up before the war. Their survival relied heavily on their farm produce.
When the war ended, Manila was heavily destroyed and the family decided to move from Manila to Cotabato City, a thriving business center in South-Central Mindanao, where they were able to put up a small trading business to include a buying and selling involving freshwater eels. This initial venture was shortlived, as the first store was burned.
With the aid of relatives, Lim Tian Siu, his spouse, Ko Giok Loo, and his family moved to Davao City, and ventured into the textile business in 1952. Starting the business with seven employees and a renewed strength to pursue greater returns from his business, the textile business was a success. But, once again, his strength of character was tested, as the textile store burned to the ground.
New Beginnings
With the undiminished support of his suppliers, Lim Tian Siu and his family were able to rebuild their business. Suppliers continued to provide him merchandise while he was rebuilding their outlet in Ramon Magsaysay Avenue, Davao City, and customers as far as Cotabato City, still kept their ties by continually buying stocks from his outlet.
1978 proved to be a good year for him and his family as they were able to pay off their debts and acquire the building of the first textile mart. His eldest son, Henry, was instrumental in the expansion of the business, which by now included a supermarket, as well as a department store in a new location along Ramon Magsaysay where NCCC Main Magsaysay now stands.
Rising the New Heights
NCCC's expansion was not limited to Davao City but in other areas as well. Soon after, a branch in the-then town, Tagum, a one hour drive from Davao City was built in 1987, the following year NCCC Main Magsaysay acquired the KIN Davao building at the corner of Lizada and Ramon Magsaysay Avenue.
In 1991, the owners' business acumen as pioneers also allowed them to build a landmark in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan; to expand NCCC Tagum into NCCC Mall Tagum; and launch its first express oulet, the NCX in 2002. But by far, the largest and boldest step is set to be made as NCCC opened its biggest store in December 2003, NCCC Mall Davao, at the corner of MacArthur Highway and Ma-a Road, Davao City.
More than thirty years of Value Shopping
Within thirty years, it has provided its customers with the best priced quality products and services. NCCC has diversified to include, breads and pastries from Breadfactory, health and pharmaceutical products from HB1, hardware and do-it-yourself home fixtures from Hardwaremaxx, perfect film and digital pictures from Kodakan, your one-stop bowling, pool, KTV spot and restobar with B3, and quality movie releases in a lively acoustic theater set-up at NCCC Cinemas.
In 2006, NCCC opened a wholesale outlet at the Puerto Princesa Integrated Bus Terminal in Palawan; an NCCC Express opened at Lachmi Mall Bolton in January, and in October reached out to its Matina residents with the opening of NCCC Centerpoint at Matina Crossing, both in Davao City.
Two years after, HB1 opened its eight branch on May 27 at the corner of Quezon Boulevard and Artiaga Street, its ninth store opened on August 8 at the Metro Lifestyle Building, Jacinto Extension, with its current outlet along Cabantian Road on November 30. In 2009. In 2009, HB1 targets to open three branches, its 11th at Puan opened on May 10, while its 12th outlet in Mintal commenced operation on May 24.
Meanwhile, NCCC Department Store and Hardwaremaxx opened outlets on November 11 and 30, respectively at Lachmi Mall, San Pedro Street. In 2009, NCCC Department Store expanded its operations at Lachmi Mall on May 24.
On September 26, Calinan residents shall experience shopping convenience as NCCC opens it supermarket, department store, and HB1 outlets.
Meanwhile, northern residents in Sasa, Panacan, Tibungco and Lasang have its fifth branch at NCCC Panacan in Davao City. Opened on October 28, it includes NCCC Supermarket, Breadfactory, Hardwaremaxx, HB1 and food tenant outlets.
Coinciding with the opening of NCCC Panacan, HB1 launched its 15th store at Wisons Shopping Center along Pichon Street in downtown Davao.

Budots October 8th, 2010, 03:11 AM PHILIPPINE-JAPAN FESTIVAL 2010
Written by: Roque , Marilyn
Thursday, 07 October 2010
A FLOURISHING relationship between Japan and the Philippines brings together two countries and their descendants to foster progress in Davao City and Mindanao and the whole the country as well. On the 30th Founding Anniversary of Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai, the Philippine-Japan Festival took place as a symbol of unity and success, and celebrating the theme “Progress in Sustaining the Relationship between the Philippines and Japan through Identity, Education and Health care Programs”.
Participating organizations were Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai, Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai International School, Mindanao Kokusai Daigaku, PNJK Polyclinic & Diagnostic Center, Japan-Philippines Volunteer Association in cooperation with Datu Uchida Development Foundation, Japan Foundation, Manila, Japan Consular Office in Davao, Japan-Philippine Industry Council, Davao Japanese Association, Davao Sakura Kai,
Philippine Retirement Authority-Davao and the Japanese Chamber of Commerce in Mindanao.
Mrs. Ines P. Mallari, PNJK Inc. 2nd Vice President & PNJK Vice President & PNJK International School Administrator introduced the guests and officials who came, including those who flew in from Japan. Hon. Consul Yoshiyuki Isoda of the Consular Office of Japan in Davao graced the occasion and delivered a message. The diplomatic community was also represented by the consular offices of Malaysia and Indonesia.
The PNJK prides itself as the only Japanese association that has offered an educational institution from grade school to college, a radio station and a polyclinic. Their vision for the future is to welcome Japanese elderly citizens in Davao City for recreation and recuperation, to become a bridge to establish linkage between Japan and the Philippines.
Rev. Matsaka Ajiro, President of the Japan-Philippines Volunteer Association mentions the need to review their activities and look at the change in generation as the 30 successful years are celebrated by the association. The JPVA is starting a travel agency to support elderly Japanese visitors, pushing to open direct chartered flights to Davao from Japan once a month next year, with training for caregivers and tourist guides. In Japan, there is a severe shortage of nursing homes. Families in Japan can be relieved of the burden and their families can come and visit as tourists.
Another program commemorating the 30th anniversary is making a record of the last 30 years history of PNJK, PNJK and JPVA which is expected to take at least one year of gathering information. Thus an appeal goes out to those who have photographs and memorabilia of the postwar days to lend the organization. Professor Sakai of Tokiwa University and visiting Professor of MKD will renovate the display panels of the History Museum in Calinan, Davao City.

Budots October 8th, 2010, 03:12 AM Capital sought for bus transport system
Written by: Escovilla , Joel B.
Thursday, 07 October 2010
The city government is looking for investors to fund the bus rapid transport (BRT) system in place of a mass rail transit which will not only limit the other mode of transportation that can be more economically viable given the limited resources available.
Davao is currently seriously considering for private sector investments is the adoption of the bus transit system or BRT system as a cheaper alternative to the light rail transit that we have been hearing about for several years now, Jason C. Magnaye, chief of the Davao City Investment Promotions Center, said.
He said the BRT system can provide faster and more efficient service than ordinary bus line and this is achieved by making improvements to existing infrastructure, vehicles and scheduling. Although he failed to provide the estimated investment, the city’s goal in adopting the system is to approach the service quality of a lightrail transit while still enjoying the cost savings and flexibility of bus transit.
City Planning Officer Roberto P. Alabado III said the modern transit scheme will eventually replace the jeepney, which proved to be an inadequate mass transportation system. The city government can encourage people to utilize the buses by making it expensive for private vehicle owners to go to the downtown area.
He said the city can duplicate what Curitiba City in Brazil is doing with its transport system, assigning dedicated network of roads for busways that ensures exact time of departure and arrival as well as prevent gridlock.
The Curitiba City has about 1,100 buses which make 12,500 trips each day serving 1.3 million passengers.
“With one bus, you can put (passengers equivalent to) four or five jeepneys and even six if the passengers are standing,” he said.
The problem, he said, is cars get the priority when they only carry four passengers as opposed to jeepneys and buses so the city government has to take a stand. In order to discourage people from owning a car, for example, Mr. Alabado, said local officials can impose road user’s tax, parking tax, or the area licensing share practiced by Singapore which charges toll fees for every vehicle going inside the urban centers.
Presently, he said, the city collects P5 parking fee for a whole day but if an ordinance will be passed to collect parking fee at P5 for every three hours, maybe it would discourage drivers from loitering at urban centers and cause traffic in the process.
He suggested a shift in the policy of the government to adopt a preference for high-capacity mass transportation system and encourage car pooling for businesses and schools So you have less traffic and less pollution in the downtown area.
As of end December 2007, Davao City has 125,000 registered private and public utility motor vehicles, records from the Land Transportation Office in the Davao region show.
Mr. Alabado said the city government can also look at other successful models like the color-coding scheme in Metro Manila, the parking fees in Makati, the bicycle lanes in Marikina and even the mixed use zone in Fort Bonifacio, which maximizes space by developing a building with several purposes in mind like office buildings, condominiums, and hotels.

Budots October 8th, 2010, 03:25 AM R. G. Salanatin: Davao contractor finalist in search for RP’s entrepreneur of the year
Monday, 04 October 2010 00:00
PDF
A PROMINENT contractor, brilliant innovator and Rotary leader is doing Dabawenyos proud by being a finalist in the prestigious Entrepreneur of The Year Philippines 2010, a search for the country’s most successful and inspiring entrepreneurs.
The Entrepreneur Of The Year Philippines will represent the country in the World Entrepreneur Of The Year 2010 in Monte Carlo, Monaco in June 2011.

I arrived in the Davao International airport yesterday straight from Nagoya from attending the APEC Women Entrepreneurship Summit and I was confronted with the arrogance of one of the Customs people. There was this lady customs officer without a name plate and was not wearing any uniform who was so rude and kept on asking irrelevant and intimidating questions as if everyone was a suspect of mis-declaring what was inside their luggages. I really pity the overseas workers and the Japanese tourists who were ahead of me. This came as a surprise to me because this was the first time that I had my baggages cleared in the Davao Custom. I am used to getting down in Manila everytime I am out of the country which is almost every month. The Custom personnel in Manila whether at the PAL terminal or at the Terminal 1 NAIA old airport are all so very courteous. This is a great stumbling block to our efforts to develop tourism here in our city and I hope the the Customs Directors will look into this.

Budots October 8th, 2010, 03:55 AM Compostela Valley: Province of natural wonders
Monday, 13 September 2010 00:00
PDF
Despite what you may have read in newspapers and seen on your television sets, Compostela Valley – more popularly known as Comval – is a haven. As a tourist destination, it’s blessed with nature’s magnificent work of art. It brims with natural attractions like beaches, waterfalls, forests, mountain ranges, caves, lakes, rivers, hot and cold springs. Name it, the province has it!
Government officials believe in marketing tourism responsibly. “We want our guests and visitors to explore and revel in nature’s finest without destroying the environment,” says Comval tourism officer Christine T. Dompor.
“Their choices within the province are almost limitless,” she adds. “We believe that we have something that caters to everyone’s enthusiasm – all waiting for the adventurous spirit in you.”
No wonder, the province is being promoted as an eco-adventure destination. Once you are in, you will understand why its tourism tagline is “Conquering Compostela Valley.” At one time, a travel writer described the province as “rough, rugged, and mostly undeveloped” – but these are qualities that attract the pioneering, adventurous, and bold who travel off the beaten path.
The newest province of the Davao region, Comval lies in the mid-eastern section of Mindanao and has a total land area of 4,666.93 square kilometers. It is bounded by Agusan del Sur n the north, Davao Oriental in the east and south, Davao Gulf in the southwest, and Davao del Norte in the west and northwest.
Although the province is touted to be a valley, at least three towns are located near the shores: Maco, Mabini, and Pantukan. Mabini, being the center of the three municipalities, has the most number of beach resorts, including Beach View, Manaklay Beach Park, Centro Beach Resort, and Berioso Beach Resorts I and II. In Pantukan, the two most noted resorts are Wellborn’s and Magnaga Waters.
Each resort has its own way of attracting guests and visitors. Bern Berioso, for instance, is not only for swimming but also has a function hall that reminds one of a ship. At the Welborn’s Beach Resort, the sea bed is flat and there are no stones or coral that make barefoot walking dangerous.
Beach View Resort has the most modern cosmopolitan bar among the beach resorts and offers exotic food and beverages. It is the nearest access to the wonderful 95-hectare Kopiat Island, which is about 300 meters away from the resort.
Kopiat Island has clear and calm waters, which are ideal for a range of water sports activities. It has wide sections of shorelines blanketed by fine white sand. In addition, it has unspoiled reef areas with rare beds that serve as sanctuaries for exotic tropical fish and other aquatic resources like endangered marine turtles.
Not far from Kopiat Island is Lunod Island (also known as Saint Anthony Island), whose 17-hectare area is covered with lush mangrove forests. A motorized banca ride is about 15 minutes away the Mabini coastline. The island is an ideal marine life sanctuary and eco-tourism park; it is a haven for scientific researches. “At night, the place turns into a magical wonder as the whole area is lighted with fireflies,” says Ms. Dompor.
If you have had enough of beaches and islands, try going to the town of Mawab up in barangay Mainit whose steaming waterfall is a sight to behold. There is a cottage that offers rest for visitors who want to take a dip in the therapeutic steaming warm water fed by tiny rivulets oozing out from the earth’s crust high above rocky ledges. This place is not known outside of the province as it has not been promoted so well.
Over an hour travel from Mawab is the municipality of Maco. In the highland barangay of New Leyte, you get a glimpse of Lake Leonard, a caldera of Mount Leonard Kniasseff, one of the 22 active volcanoes in the country whose last eruption was reported in the second century A.D. The 200-hectare lake was used before as a dumping ground for mining wastes fro the Amakan copper extraction of the North Davao Mining Company from the 80’s until it ceased operation in the early 90’s.
If you’re looking for more adventure, proceed to Maragusan. This summer capital of the Davao region is home to 30 majestic waterfalls and 300 cold springs and two hot springs. Its lake is situated about 7,800 feet above sea level. Its total land area of 39,427 hectares is typhoon-free as it is surrounded by mountain ranges, home to the world’s largest individual flower, Rafflesia magnifica. Not to forget are its bananas which have an atypical sort of sweetness!
One of its famous waterfalls is the Tagbibinta Falls in barangay Coronobe. It has a series of seven falls, the first one measuring approximately 70 feet in height. “The falls was named as such because the place used to be the business center,” said Dennis B. Radin, the town’s tourism officer.
Other noted falls are Marangig, Pyalitan, Miyaya, Pyagabunan, Manabas, Tarago, Maputi, Lahi, Mabuganao, Kyalinawan, Kolon, Kasigpitan, Gipadpalan, and Tangcalao. “However, some of these falls are too far to visit,” Radin said.
Comval is known for its gold. It all started in 1983 when a Mandaya tribal elder struck gold in Mount Diwalwal. Today, Monkayo, the site of Mount Diwalwal, is the most populous town in the province and is considered the socio, economic, political and cultural hub of Comval. (For trivia fanatics: In 2007, Hollywood actor Josh Hartnett filmed scenes of an independent movie, I Come with the Rain, in the mining area).
Since gold made Comval famous, it is but fitting to pay tribute to the famous metal. On the 10th anniversary of the province, the provincial government launched the Bulawan Festival to drum up its aim to be the Jewelry Capital of the Philippines. (Bulawan is the local dialect for gold.)
Nabunturan, the province’s capital, is home to the country’s biggest gold ring. The 18-carat, two-toned Solidarity Ring measures five inches in diameter, weighs 1.3 kilos and is housed in a glass case with its own guard at the provincial capitol. Local officials, miners, and private individuals from Comval and Davao del Norte reportedly donated gold to forge the ring.
Nabunturan, by the way, is touted to be the Spelunking Capital of the province. Its claim to fame: San Vicente Cave, which boasts of unique stalactite and stalagmite formations. However, only four caves are open to the public.
Another must-visit for those love caving is the town of Laak. According to some reports, more than 100 caves can be found in the municipality. Recently, the speleological society of Davao City visited some of the caves, thus making Laak a potential caving destination for tourists.
How to get there? Comval is accessible by air, land, and sea transportation. Davao City, 979 kilometers from Manila, is the gateway to the province. On arriving at the airport, take a taxi or a bus ride to the Davao City Overland Transport Terminal in Ecoland to board a bus to Nabunturan, the capital town, 90 kilometers away and a two-hour ride. In Nabunturan, vou can transfer to any public utility vehicle for another ride to any destination in the province.
Single motorcycles and/or habal-habal, locally-known as skylab, are available in any major point of the province. Here’s what you need to know about this special means of transportation: “A skylab is a single motorcycle with added contraptions not unlike the wings of an airplane to carry additional passengers. It has a roof to protect passengers from the rain or the sun and can carry up to ten passengers. It is also not unlike a flying seesaw where passengers are treated to an exhilarating ride as the motorcycle careens up and down rocky roads and climbs slopes, allowing you to view the chasm below and the vista beyond.”

Budots October 8th, 2010, 04:00 AM DOH backs medical tourism in Samal Island

by Noel Baguio
The Department of Health (DOH) is supporting plans for the development of medical tourism in the Island Garden City of Samal (IGaCoS), Davao del Norte.
Health Assistant Secretary Paulyn Jean Rosell-Ubial assured the department’s support for the proposed modern medical facility to establish the island for medical tourism.
“We will look into putting up a state-of-the-art medical facility in Samal that will primarily cater to the medical needs of tourists,” Asec. Ubial said, during the finalization of the rationalization plan for health in the four provinces of the Davao region.
Davao del Norte Gov. Rodolfo del Rosario has proposed the development of medical tourism in the island as part of his strategy to strengthen the health sector, it being an important component of his thrust in human development.
In his inaugural message last July, the governor expressed his intention to position the resort-island city, for medical tourism, besides being a favorite destination for foreign and local retirees seeking a home of their own.
The island has a district hospital owned and operated by the province.
Plagued by limited resources, its decrepit building and facilities can hardly provide for quality health needs of the local populace, much less attract tourists seeking medical treatment there.
“We have to upgrade the hospital,” Ubial said, adding that she would personally lobby for the establishment of a medical center in IGaCoS similar to the modern medical facilities in the resort islands of Boracay, Camiguin and Siargao.
She bared the DOH invested around P100 million for the medical center in Camiguin, which now has a state-of-the-art intensive care unit.
The department had also recently transformed a public hospital in Siargao into the “St. Luke’s Hospital of the South”.
“We can also do that for the Island Garden City of Samal,” she assured.
Provincial health officer Dr. Agapito Hornido said Gov. Del Rosario is willing to donate about five to 10 hectares of his property in the island city, as site of the new medical center in IGaCoS.

This is a great stumbling block to our efforts to develop tourism here in our city and I hope the the Customs Directors will look into this.

davao tourism office should do something on the matter asap. its undermining the tourism drive of promoting the city and counterproductive to the efforts of promotion. that display of arrogance might just need a cash bribe or gift items to spare you from rude conduct and intimidation. she does not meet the criteria/qualification of a front desk officer in a reception hall of a convention centre. send her off and away from tourist areas. lol

PHILIPPINE-JAPAN FESTIVAL 2010
Judge Antonina B. Escovilla, PNJK 1st Vice President & PNJK IS President delivered the closing remarks at the colorful and momentous occasion for the Philippines and Japan. Photos: Karlo Tomas

Davao City eyed for modern system of taxi fleet dispatching, management
Monday, 04 October 2010 00:00
PDF
A highly technical but easy to operate and less-costly communication system that integrates advanced technologies including the use of satellite promises to complete the odyssey of Davao into becoming a 21st century city. It is called the Taxi Fleet Dispatching and Management System or TFDMS which will complement the central 911 nerve center, the traffic signalization and the installation of closed circuit television (CCTV) in making Davao the safest and most secured
city in the Philippines.
Davao to be first
Lin said TFDMS integrates the following advanced technologies automatic vehicle locational (AVL) equipment, satellite positioning system (GPS), GSM/GPRS mobile communication, geographic information system (GIS), intelligent dispatching pattern and call center management system.
Ltd, “the PLDT of Taiwan. He said he has already met with some Davao operators to explain the system and the business model to be used by TFDMS here.
