One Network Bank posts P216-M net (http://www.bworldonline.com/main/content.php?id=20381)

DAVAO CITY -- One Network Bank posted P216 million in net income in the nine months to September after it cut its interest expenses and increased investments in government securities.

Alex V. Buenaventura, bank president and chief executive, said the profit figure, almost a fourth higher compared to the same period a year earlier, was triggered by a 28% rise in deposits to P8.382 billion from P6.532 billion.

The bank, which is based in this city, generated a big volume of time deposits and was able to invest in long-term high-yielding government papers. Furthermore, about two-thirds of its deposits are current and savings deposits, which pay low interest rates.

With the bank expanding its reach to 81 branches, Mr. Buenaventura said he is confident the bank can maintain its profitability until the end of the year.

He noted the bank would have performed better had some of the public school teachers who used to be its clients not transfered to other banks. Other banks offered loans as high P250,000, while One Network offered only P150,000.

One Network Bank’s loan portfolio during the period, as a result went down by 4% to P5.758 billion from P5.992 billion. But the bank will matched the ceiling of its competitors, he added. -- C. Q. Francisco

Valle Verde: Gateway to comfortable living (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/business/valle-verde-gateway-comfortable-living)

STA. Lucia Realty and Development Inc., one of the country's top property developers, has continued to show its confidence in Davao City's economy, where its target market is also growing.

Thirteen years ago, Sta. Lucia Realty launched its first development project in the city -- the posh Rancho Palos Verdes Golf & Residential Estates.

"Since then, we've never left Davao. We launched several development projects, a proof that we have been very successful here," Liezel Tuason-Magpoc, vice president for sales and marketing of Orchard Property Marketing Corporation, Sta. Lucia's marketing arm, told Sun.Star Davao in an interview.

"Before, all it took was a wall that separates the area from the outside. But Sta. Lucia has uplifted that with its fully furnished developments," she said.

Other than Rancho Palos Verdes, Sta. Lucia has five other development projects in the city -- South Pacific Golf and Leisure Estate, Alta Monte, Riverfront Corporate City, Ciudad Verde and Las Palmas.

But it never ends there. This pioneering realty company resumes ushering in better standards of living with its latest development project -- the middle-scale Valle Verde Residential Estate, its seventh in the city.

"We never stop developing. In fact, three other projects nasa drawing board na at me mga plano na in Davao City," Magpoc said during the project launch on October 30.

Located along the Philippine-Japan Highway in Panacan, Davao City, Valle Verde is a sprawling 14-hectare subdivision that features about 500 lots that range from 120 to 150 meters. It has up-to-date amenities set to uphold Sta. Lucia's credo of "convenient and comfortable living".

"Valle Verde offers a threshold to the diverse and vibrant heart of the city. It is a splendid refuge of modern luxuries and amenities poised to witness the city's astounding progression," Magpoc said.

Valle Verde is strategically located along the Philippine-Japan Friendship Highway in Panacan, with easy access to Davao City International Airport.

With an initial investment of P500 million, Valle Verde boasts of amenities that are usually found in upscale subdivisions -- landscaped entrance gate and guardhouse, perimeter wall, paved sidewalks, underground drainage system, complete electrical facilities, etc.

It will have the community clubhouse, with multi-purpose function room, pen basketball court and a swimming pool.

Valle Verde will also have a commercial center that will provide a diverse selection of shops and restaurants.

Other than its location, Magpoc said Valle Verde's edge is its affordability.

"For as low as P8,200 month, you can own a lot at Valle Verde," she said.

Development works at the site started in early October, yet they have already sold almost 50 percent of available lots.

"The market is mixed. We have the overseas Filipino workers, businessmen and professionals. The market is still growing in Davao," Magpoc said.

Davao City Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has recognized the city's 13-year partnership with Sta. Lucia in providing quality and affordable housing for Dabawenyos. He said the real estate company has also become a partner "when it comes to providing jobs and income opportunities" for city residents.

"Our city, by leaps and bounds, takes the lead in commerce, trade and industry and tourism in Mindanao," Duterte said in his message during the launch.

"The launching of a new residential hub is always great news for our people. Valle Verde is another exciting addition to our city's increasing number of exclusive suburban neighborhoods and gives our people more option on where to build their homes and raise their families."

For Mayor Sara Duterte another project from Sta Lucia is "proof of the steady increase in the development of the city in terms of human resources and economic growth.

"And I am positive that Valle Verde will encourage more professionals and entrepreneurs from around the country and the world to continue doing business in Davao City," the mayor said.

For more information about Valle Verde, call OPMC Davao at 082-2219444 or Manila Head Office at (02)687-2425. (Nelson C. Bagaforo)

Kisan Lu Realty, Inc.

Kisan Lu Realty, Inc. (KLRI) started to join the real estate industry way back in 1981 as a single proprietorship, bearing the business name Kisan Lu Realty, created by the owner, the late Kisan D. Lu. The company has then progressed into a corporation and accomplished innumerable residential and commercial developments. Over the years, KLRI has delivered more than 10,000 residential units, apart from more than 20 units of completed commercial developments. Eventually, the firm earned the trust and confidence of the growing public, that KLRI became the choice of clients seeking for affordable houses without sacrificing quality. More so, KLRI received countless awards and recognitions, further proving the company as one of the largest developers in the country.

After just a few years, KLRI progressed into a corporation and branched out to other cities, particularly General Santos City and Cagayan de Oro City, continually earning the trust and confidence of the growing public. Also, the company diversified its services, adding to its line of business the rentals of equipment and hauling services.

In 2000, the company was gradually taken over by the children of the founder – Kisan D. Lu. Backed with superior quality of education, molded thru experience, and bequeathed with wisdom from their late father and mentor, the new breed of equally qualified business people, fore headed by Arch. Kristin L. Lu and their dynamic team of professionals, developed the Kisan Lu Pag-Ibig City project in 2002. Located in Cagayan de Oro City, this project has successfully constructed 1,200 housing units, which was marked as the opening project for this second generation of governance.

With the diverse services that KLRI has to offer, the management has decided to put up a new corporation, to mainly focus on the broad field of real estate industry. Thus, Kisan Lu Lands And Development, Inc. (KLLDI) was formed. Basically, KLLDI is a sister company of KLRI, the concentration of the former is geared towards innovation, product quality, and efficient work force to effectively deliver satisfying and praise worthy outputs. With the same group of experienced project engineers, qualified labor force, contemporary planning and design team, technical crew, and administrative staff from KLRI, there is definitely a guarantee that high standards and qualifications are maintained, if not at all surpassed.

VISION and MISSION

We, the members of Kisan Lu Lands and Development, Incorporated will be a renowned, respected, and admired real estate organization in the Philippine real estate industry.

KLLDI will sustain the legacy of enriching the lives of its constituents by delivering products and services with superior quality at the best value. We will continue to strive for excellence in creating and developing innovative designs and concepts, which exceed the expectations of our customers.

KLLDI will uphold a mutually beneficial business relationship that is anchored in trust and confidence. We are committed in nurturing the highest values and qualities in all our dealings with our colleagues, clients, and other business partners. We will adhere to maintain a strong, honest, and efficient governance to generate optimum returns for the company.

KLLDI will continually protect and preserve the beauty and balance of nature. We will constantly be aware of our civic responsibilities and take part in promoting socially relevant advocacies for the betterment and general welfare of the community.

Top Golf Courses
It was so hard to choose just 10 golf courses that we have extended the list to 11! Here’s our pick of some of the best on offer in the Philippines at the moment:

Alta Vista Golf & Country Club, Cebu

Alta Vista is a short, challenging, mountainous course with rolling terrain and narrow fairways. The views are stunning: standing on the course, you can see Mactan Island, Bohol, and the bay.

Cebu Country Club, Cebu

This championship course was established in 1928, and has improved continuously since it was created. There are winding fairways, numerous trees, and sand traps furnished with ground coral rock.

Rancho Palos Verdes, Davao

This beautiful course has just about everything: undulating fairways, ravines, dramatic elevation changes, water hazards, pot bunkers, and excellent views.

Apo Golf & Country Club, Davao

Apo Golf & Country Club is a beautiful course that can be played at any time of the year. On most of the holes the greens are huge and flat, with well-maintained sand traps. The course includes plenty of water hazards, and there are also numerous mahogany and coconut trees to add to the challenge.

Canlubang Golf & Country Club, Manila

Canlubang Golf & Country Club is the largest in the Philippines, and was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. It has 36 holes which consist of wide, undulating fairways lined with coconut trees. There are man-made lakes, and even ravines.

Wack Wack Golf & Country Club, Manila

Wack Wack is an excellent golf club with two 18-hole championship courses. The first of these is the East Course – former host of the Philippine Open, the World Cup, and other famous events. The second is the West Course – a shorter, less troublesome (all-weather) championship course.

Club Intramuros, Manila

The Club Intramuros course is quite short (par 66, with a length of 4,326 yards), but there are plenty of challenges. Almost every hole includes either water hazards, out-of-bounds, or both.

Villamor Golf Club, Manila

The Villamor Golf Course is fairly flat, but still challenging to golfers of all standards due to the trees and water hazards. The fairways are lined with elegant agoho, ipil-ipil, nara and mango trees.

Camp John Hay Golf Club, Baguio

The Camp John Hay Golf Course was designed by Jack Nicklaus’ Golden Bear International, and is one of the best in the Philipines. It is located 5,000 feet above sea level, and is surrounded by rolling hills, crystal clear lakes and tall pine trees.

Fairways and Bluewater Golf & Country Club, Boracay

This 18 hole golf course was designed by Graham Marsh, and offers a different experience with every hole. The front nine is fairly flat, with plenty of water hazards. The back nine is more hilly, with less hazards.

Caliraya Springs Golf & Country Club, Laguna

This 18-hole championship golf course is located next to Caliraya Lake. The course has rolling terrain and some challenging water hazards. Designed by Arnold Palmer, the course is suitable for high handicappers and seasoned golfers alike.

Dencio’s Kamayan in Davao City has become synonymous with tasty, affordable Filipino food. Our family restaurant started at the back of a mall in 1998 and quickly grew from word-of-mouth. Since then, Dencio’s Kamayan has become part of the dining experience of locals and visitors. We pride ourselves in serving great Filipino and grilled food at affordable prices. Our restaurants are homey and service is attentive.

The signature Chicken Barbecue, Pork Barbecue, and Grilled Spare Ribs combine the local preference for sweet and salty flavors. Big groups can enjoy the Ribs Espesyal or Sari-Sari Espesyal, a platter of various grilled meat items.

Seafood, abundant in Davao City, is not to be missed. Local specialties are Grilled Panga (tuna jaw), Sizzling Bangus Belly, Grilled Squid, and Grilled Tiyan ng Isda (tuna belly).

Other Filipino favorites are the sinful Crispy Pata (deep fried pork leg) and hearty kare-kare, a stew made from peanut sauce with vegetables, oxtail, and beef.

For the best view of Davao City, go to Dencio’s Kamayan sa Hilltop, where you can savor the best local food amidst a view of bright city lights and twinkling stars.

Come visit us at any of our branches in Davao, Tagum, and General Santos cities. We will be happy to serve you.

Davao City to play key role as BIMP-EAGA ‘food basket’ (http://davaocitynews.blogspot.com/2010/11/davao-city-to-play-key-role-as-bimp.html)

Davao City could play a crucial role as a food basket in the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-the Philippines East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-Eaga), with its proposed Food Terminal Complex in Daliao, Toril.

This developed as the finalization of the food basket concept was widely discussed in a recent BIMP-EAGA meeting in Indonesia in a bid to make the subregion as the food basket of Asean.

At the recently concluded 15th BIMP-Eaga Senior Officials and Ministers Meeting, the signing ministers of the four country grouping agreed to strengthen the push for the transformation of BIMP-Eaga into becoming the regional food basket and premier eco-tourism destination in Asia.

Mayor Sara Duterte has made her priority the establishment of the 25-hectare food terminal complex to encourage the business sector to invest and further spur the growth of the city’s and entire Davao Region’s economy.

Mayor Duterte’s bid to position her city as a key player in the BIMP-EAGA economic pact is also in pursuit of its historic role in the birth of the subregional effort to position Asean as a major factor in world economy, said city hall spokesman Bong Aportadera.

The food terminal complex is a vital component of our over-all effort to sell the city to the world, said Aportadera, also the concurrent tourism officer.

BIMP-EAGA, a special project of then President Fidel Ramos, was launched in 1992 in this city which hosted crucial follow-through ministers meetings that laid down its foundations. Then Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, the mayor’s father and now the vice mayor, had worked closely with President Ramos, offering the local government’s resources, to make the project fly.

In the recent Indonesian meeting in Darussalam, BIMP-EAGA movers agreed to formulate a comprehensive implementation of the blueprint for the BIMP-Eaga to guide the timely and effective achievement of the goal to transform the subregion into a regional food basket and a premier eco-tourism destination for Asean and the rest of Asia.

Primarily based on the Asean Integrated Food Security (AIFS) Framework, the food basket concept is BIMP-Eaga’s over-arching policy framework for the sustainable development of the agro-industry and fisheries sectors.

The goal is to achieve sustainable development and economic integration of the agro-industries and fisheries sectors to ensure food security, sustainable livelihoods of the people and poverty alleviation in BIMP-Eaga.

The food basket concept shall then be finalized and will be discussed in the forthcoming BIMP-Eaga Agriculture and Fisheries Ministers Meeting in November this year set in Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Engr. Ramon F. Allado, chair of the Southern Philippines Construction Core Group (SPCCG), in his presentation last month during the recent Regional Economic Managers’ Briefing spearheaded by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Davao, said the establishment of the Davao Food Terminal Complex will be located in the area of the National Development Company (NDC) property in Daliao, Toril.
Allado said the food terminal will focus on poultry, fruit processing, agri processing, and cold storage facilities.

He said primarily, the business considers the strength of agriculture as the stabilizer amidst repercussions in the global economy. The project is a complete example of a public-private partnership (PPP) initiative.

He said the SPCCG represents the private sector while the public sector proponents are the NDC and City Government of Davao. It is supported by the DTI, Department of Agriculture (DA), National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCCII), and Davao Constructors Association Center, Inc. (DCACI).

“Stakeholders of this project agree that there is a need for Davao Region to open more opportunities for the expansion of agri-based businesses through the application of value-adding activities, citing the presence of an agri-industrial estate as one of the most essential infrastructures vital to boosting industry potentials,” he said.

The project has been identified by the City Government of Davao as one of the top three priority projects for the next three years (2010 to 2013), alongside farm-to-market roads and tourism development.

TWO schools in Davao City have been chosen to be among 54 schools all over the country where Spanish language will be taught.

The Davao City Special School has been chosen as one of the pilot areas while the Davao City National High School is among the expansion schools.

Education Secretary Armin Luistro announced Tuesday the Education Department's tie-up with the Government of Spain, wherein public school teachers from 54 schools would receive training from Spanish professors on the Spanish language.

The tie-up was made possible through the actions of the Ministry of Education of Spain, Instituto Cervantes and the Agencia Espanola de Cooperacion Internacional Para el Desarollo (AECID), Luistro said in a press statement.

"This is part of the continuing partnership between the Philippine Government and the Government of Spain. This time, they will learn about advance methodological content and strategies in teaching the language," Luistro said.

Luistro said schools are selected based on their achievement levels in English from the National Achievement Test. One or two teachers from each identified schools are sent for training.

Luistro said 102 teachers are currently being trained by professors from Universidad de Salamanca provided for by the Ministry of Education of Spain. Training is being conducted at Instituto Cervantes in Manila and at the Ecotech Center in Cebu.

Of the number of teacher-trainees, 27 teachers from the pilot schools are taking the advance methodological content and strategy at the Instituto Cervantes with another 44 from expansion schools in Luzon taking the methodology course. Some 31 teachers from Visayas and Mindanao will take the methodology course in Cebu.

Grants will also be provided later on to allow teachers to attend intensive summer training and professional development courses organized by Spanish universities.

St. Peter Life Run…
A Celebration of 40 Years (http://www.dailymirror.ph/Nov-2010/11032010/week.html)

It was the most unique fun run so far, with a new route via Buhangin Road, and with a hearse as lead vehicle in the 3K race category while runners in their Halloween costumes follow. The St. Peter Life Run is the 40th Anniversary celebration of St. Peter Life Plans and Chapels. The event aims to encourage living one’s life to the fullest and being proud of one’s individuality and uniqueness.

Similar fun run celebrations happened simultaneously in Cebu, Manila and here in Davao on October 24 at the break of dawn. In Davao, the runners assembled at the parking area of Victoria Plaza not just for fun, health and fitness. All the fun run proceeds were donated to the Bantay Bata 163 Foundation.

MetroLifestyle Fitness Center & Spa was tapped to organize the said fun run event with 1500 registrants attended by St. Peterians - employees and planholders, and running enthusiasts from Tagum, Calinan, Panabo, and other parts of Davao City. The event was officially opened with Lupang Hinirang, and a prayer led by Bienvenido William Lipayon, Tagum Chapel Manager. Branch Manager Ms. Marichu Viovicente led the Panatang Makabayan and the St. Peter Life Plans Mission, Vision and Values.

St Peter Life Plans’ Regional Manager of Mindanao East 3, Mr. Efren D. Cortez, gave a brief Welcome Speech, which hyped up the crowd as it marked the start of the race. To further the excitement, MetroLifestyle instructors Ivy Ko and Bonn Sarabia conducted stretching exercises followed with a race briefing by Race Official - Kenneth Sai.

Event hosts Tom Arellano and Nell Jone Astudillo announced the count down and fired the race gun to start the 10K, 5K and 3K race at 10 minute-intervals. The runners raced through an out and back course from Victoria Plaza to Dacudao, going up Buhangin-Cabantian road, up to Diversion Road-Star Oil which completes the 10K route.

The fun run winners received medals and cash prizes awarded by St. Peter Life Plans Officers, Regional Manager Efren Cortez and Marivic Nawang, Audit and Finance Manager-Mindanao.

Bryan Lupio crossed the finished line at 37:46 time to bag the 10K Championship Medal and Php7000 cash prize. He was followed by Joselito Dugos (37:47) with just one minute difference at second place, and Luigi Lavega (40:27) at third place. They received medals and P5,000 and P3,000 respectively.

A remarkable 39.33 run time of Mona Ambasa made her the 10K Champion in the Female Category, followed by second placer Cynthia Jaro at 41:53 minutes, and the pride of MetroLifestyle Fitness Center - Roneth Ozarraga in third place at 57:37 time.

In the 5K Male Category Champion, Philip Ocon clocked 16:22 minutes. second placer Mario Ecalner timed at 16:30, while third placer Jaime Valencia finished at 16:46. Female 5K Category Champion was grabbed by Criselyn Jaro at 20:42, followed by Cellie Rose Jaro, 21:54, and third place went to another MetroLifestyle’s pride - Catherine Arias at 27:10 minutes. 5K Category winners received medals and cash prizes of Php5,000 for the Champion, P3,000 for second placers, and P2,000 for the third placers.

Not to be outdone, Halloween-costumed runners raced around town without fear of melting in the heat of the sun. The 3K Champions Ronald Dagaang (9:50 mins) and Josephine Arendain (20:14 mins) received a medal and P3,000 each. Second place went to LynJun Saagundo (10:41) and Maria Shiela Datulayta (21:30). Third placers who went home with a medal and P1000 each were Edgar Ugabar (11:31) and Melba Grace Lozada (25:08).

Congratulations to St. Peter Life Plans, to all the winners, participants and organizers who gave their time and effort in this fun run celebration! More sectoral representatives to the city council considered (http://www.mindanaotimes.net/?p=14629)
Written by: Fusilero , Kristianne
Wednesday, 03 November 2010

LAWMAKERS will study the proposal of the Community Organizing: Davao Experience Foundation to add more sectoral representatives to the city council.

Annie M. Sandalo of Code Foundation and representative of the Alliance of Progressive Labor and the Miserior Parnership-Davao Region Cluster, said in a letter request addressed to Councilor Pilar C. Braga that there is a need to implement Sec. 457 of the Local Government Code.

Sec. 457 (b) of the Local Government Code provides that there shall be three sectoral representatives: one from the women; and, as shall be determined by the sanggunian concerned within 90 days prior to the holding of the local elections, one from the agricultural or industrial workers; and one from the other sectors, including the urban poor, indigenous cultural communities, or disabled persons.

Sandalo said Naga City and Quezon City already added sectoral representatives to the legislative body. And the same we wish to explore with to our city council, she added.

In response to the letter of Sandalo, Braga said in her privilege speech yesterday that although the proposal does not merit an urgent decision, the request of CODE Foundation will be reviewed and be further discussed during committee hearings.

We would like to thank the CODE Foundation for their letter which this body will take into consideration and serious study, Braga said.

During the 15th city council, the lawmakers had already enacted one item in the provision of the Local Government Code which is to include the indigenous cultural communities in Sangguniang Panlungsod.

The 15th city council then had approved an ordinance granting one seat as a sectoral representative of the indigenous people. As cited in the ordinance, a Technical Working Group would select one from any of the tribes based in the city as the 27th member of the city council.

The city government had mulled earlier that giving a seat as sectoral representative of the indigenous people group will be fully implemented by next year.

Written by: Develos III , Jon O.
Wednesday, 03 November 2010

CASH prizes and home appliances will be given away in the Sunrun 27th Finishers Marathon slated this December 5 on an out and back course starting from the Victoria Plaza grounds in Bajada.

This was bared by Sunday Runners Club (SUNRUN) president Dr. Oscar Escudero who added they are expecting some 2,000 runners coming from all over Mindanao who will join the only remaining prestigious full marathon footrace outside of Manila and Cebu Cities.

He said they are anticipating more participants in the 3K, 5K and 10K categories as many schools, business establishments, running clubs and sports enthusiasts have manifested their interest to register earlier this month of November.

Home appliances at stake in the raffle include a Panasonic Home Theater Audio System, a Panasonic Washing Machine and a Panasonic Digital Camera,

Among those who already communicated with the Sunrun registration center are contingencies coming from the Cagayan de Oro Runners Club, Bukidnon Runners, Digos Joggers Club, 911 runners and the Tagum Runners Club headed by Ashley Malipero.

Meanwhile, race director Tom Tan said this years route will differ from the 26 previous SUNRUN annual marathons, citing that the event will start from Victoria Plaza to J.P. Laurel Ave., Quirino Ave, Bankerohan Bridge, McArthur Highway and runners will have turn left to Maa Road and back turning right to Mcarthur Highway and will proceed to St. Peter college in Toril where the turning point is and back to Victoria Plaza. The Panasonic will be sponsoring the raffle give-aways and Pocari Sweat Company will be distributing their Pocari Sweat Ion during the event. Both are major sponsors of the footrace.

Registration is now going at the Sports Depot, Ground Floor, of Victoria Plaza Mall and registration fees are pegged at P200 for the 3K, 5K and 10K that is inclusive of a running singlet, breakfast and finishers certificate while the 21K is P300 and 42K is P400 respectively.

Tan said that only top finishers of the 21K will receive medals while all finishers of the marathon will have pre-run carbo-loading and will be
awarded with commemorative finishers medals.

why does it have to go through bidding? whats the scheme?

to my understanding, phasing out of jeepneys on the street is part of the implementation of local laws, introducing public trasport vehicles accepted for its safety worthiness. and franchise of operation can go to any operator(single individual, corp, big or small) who can comply the requirements.

What's sadder is these multicab operators knows beforehand that it is going to be phased-out and they did not do anything about it.

If they had banded together and formed a cooperative as what someone here suggested, then there's no reason they couldn't get a franchise and challenge the big-capital operators. I guess davawenyos would support their endeavour on monopolies.

i dont believe land transport office is closing its doors to other franchise applicants. if theres only one transport operator for the whole public transport sys in davao city, fare rate can be manipulated. i dont think the mayor would allow interests that go against her pro-people-service thrusts and programs

it was clear in the reports, it is not brt. it was to implement local law, and executive directives in coordination with the lto. expected chnge on the phase out is a shift to a safer versions/models of public transport vehicles to make the ride safer for the riding public and other road users. i didnt expect total overhaul of the sys. i guess you know brt sys is a new concept in davao. and i guess you knew you cant just depart from the old sys and shift into brt all of a sudden without going through the process of transport study and public hearings and consultations.

Davao stakeholders upbeat on first biodiversity summit (http://www.edgedavao.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=3476:davao-stakeholders-upbeat-on-first-biodiversity-summit&catid=34:the-economy&Itemid=68)
Monday, 01 November 2010 00:00

Various groups from Davao City’s government and private sectors have banded together to protect the city’s biodiversity, believing that it will ultimately influence the economic development of the city.
The group, consisting of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Department of Health (DOH), Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc,. EcoGov and the Davao Tourism Alliance among others, are set to hold the First Davao Biodiversity Summit on November 25.
“We have decided to pool our resources so we can come up with a concrete plan of action that will encourage close collaboration leading to a concerted effort in conserving the Davao region’s diversity,” DENR 11 regional technical director Emmanuel Isip said.
DOH 11 director Dr. Teogenes Baluma said the health sector is directly benefitted by efforts to conserve the environment and its biodiversity.
“Lack of proper solid waste and waste water management can contaminate both surface and underground sources of drinking water resulting in various diseases,” he said.
Baluma said unmanaged waste causes disease-carrying insects to thrive and can thus endanger public health.
Susan Palad of the Davao Tourism Alliance said the tourism industry also benefits from a well-preserved environment.
“Local tourism often flourishes in areas where biodiversity is rich, such as clean beaches that make possible excellent diving sites and forests with good cover that are ideal for trekking,” she said, adding: “Local tourism generates income and provides livelihood for locals. This is exactly what is happening to the Davao Gulf which sustains the P6.5 billion eco-tourism industry in the region.”
“Environment conservation will ensure a good resource base for sustainable economic development,” Isip said. “Davao Gulf, with an estimated 308,000 hectare area, ranks high in the country’s aquaculture production. It generates P669 million in aquaculture earnings and provides employment for about 19,000 commercial and municipal fishermen.

The activities were plenary sessions, arts camp, workshops, performances, exhibits and a parade.
Some 1,000 delegates, including high school students, teachers and regional coordinators for Culture and the Arts participated in the national festival. They came from all regions of the country, except for regions 2 and the Cordillera where the recent typhoon affected their areas.
The arts camp covered five disciplines, namely, visual arts, medium arts (film), creative writing, dance and music. Prominent artists were invited to become masters in the workshops, including Davao’s own Kublai Milan for visual arts, and Noel Cabangon for music.
On the last day, students presented their outputs from the arts camp. Marcos S. Rodil, head of the Culture and Arts office, DepEd central office, said the presentation of outputs was not a competition but only a showcase of different talents from different regions as expressed by the festival’s theme. Date 2010 opens; banana players convene for first global summit (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/business/date-2010-opens-banana-players-convene-first-global-summit)

THIS year's staging of the Davao Trade Expo (Date 2010) opens Friday at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Convention Hall, featuring the first-ever Philippine Global Banana Summit that will gather Philippine and foreign business leaders from banana producing countries aimed at addressing challenges faced by industry stakeholders.

The three-day Date 2010, from November 5 to 7, carries the theme "Building the Future: Innovation Towards Global Agriculture."

Organizers of the two-day banana summit, led by the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (DCCCII), invited speakers from all over the country and other parts of the world to discuss issues and share inputs on banana production, export, marketing and consumption, to name a few.

The event is seen to provide participants, specifically banana players, a great opportunity to network and learn from the world's leading agricultural experts.

Inputs from plenary session will provide understanding of the global demand and supply scenario of bananas for consideration in the Philippine Economic Development Plan.

Representatives from banana companies are expected to share policies on trade practices that have contributed to enhance global competitiveness.

Agro-K Philippines, a subsidiary of the US-based Agro-K and a fertilizer manufacturer, which developed effective methods to produce bananas and pineapples without using any fungicides or nematicides in 1997, is among the sponsors of the event.

The company will showcase this new technology that boosts production without using pesticides and fungicides.

Sigatoka experts at Agro-K Philippines has developed a novel method to feed the banana plant by directly injecting the nutrients into the harvested mother plants instead of applying it on the ground where around 80 percent of the applied fertilizers are wasted or fixed into insoluble compounds.

"(This) spike program is less expensive but gives a five- to seven kilogram improvement in production," Agro-K said in a statement. "Agro K is doing it to eliminate all pesticides used by the banana industry. This is not only good for the environment but is good for the workers that toil in the farms and for the consumers who eat these fruits."

Sigatoka has become the nemesis for banana production in countries, like the Philippines, that produce bananas for export to developed countries like Europe, United States, Canada, Russia, Japan, Korea where such tropical fruit cannot be grown because of the climate.

Since 100 years ago, when Chiquita started the banana production in poor undeveloped countries for the US and Europe, the low paying workers were one of the key ingredients for banana production.

"No one discussed the pesticides needed to produce bananas and other tropical fruits, destined for export to developed countries," Agro K said.

But Sigatoka adversely affected banana production in these countries. Nematodes were attacking the roots of these banana plants, toppling the slightest storms and the nutrient uptake from the soils were also compromised by Nematodes.

Agro K said banana companies uses nematicides that were more dangerous to laborers, than fungicides used to control Sigatoka.

Since then, AgroK said pesticides have ruled the fruit producing world, with billions of dollars of pesticides currently used worldwide to produce the bananas and pineapples.

When Agro-K developed an effective method that rids the use of pesticides and fungicides in plantations, it was not immediately accepted by the industry.

"The path to acceptance by the industry has not been easy. The International companies which are used to chemicals are either non-believers or reluctant to accept the fact, that this can be done," Agro-K said.

Agro-K developed the method to replace pesticides with nutrients, employing prophylactic methods to immunize these fruit trees from diseases. It has set up demonstration farms where zero pesticide is being used and the result has been more fruits and better quality fruits.

Currently, Agro-K said, these methods are under demonstrations in the Philippines and other parts of the world.

it was clear in the reports, it is not brt. it was to implement local law, and executive directives in coordination with the lto. expected chnge on the phase out is a shift to a safer versions/models of public transport vehicles to make the ride safer for the riding public and other road users. i didnt expect total overhaul of the sys. i guess you know brt sys is a new concept in davao. and i guess you knew you cant just depart from the old sys and shift into brt all of a sudden without going through the process of transport study and public hearings and consultations.

6 foreign countries to share new trends on banana industry (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/business/6-foreign-countries-share-new-trends-banana-industry)

REPRESENTATIVES of six countries are set to participate in the 11th Davao Trade Expo (Date) 2010 to discuss the world's newest trends and technologies in the banana industry.

Lizabel Holganza, Date 2010 chair, announced during Wednesday's Club 888 media forum at the Marco Polo Davao that Switzerland, USA, Netherlands, India, Taiwan, Thailand, and Saudi Arabia representatives will be part of the resource speakers' panel to discus and share with Dabawenyos and Mindanaoans their knowledge and expertise.

Among the banana industry issues that will be tackled are farming, marketing, consumption and other inputs by foreign banana growers and exporters.

With agri-industrial sector as the main strength of Davao City, there are still several idle agricultural areas in the Davao region.

According to Albert Quinto, president of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce (DCCCI), aside from the banana industry, there are several potential in Davao City's resources, especially small-scale farming.

Quinto said Davao's strategic location and being typhoon-free add to the higher rate of success among agriculture ventures whether it is in a small-scale or large-scale.

Major banana exporting companies from the Philippines like Lapanday and Tagum Agricultural Development Company (Tadeco) will also share inputs on local trends.

Date 2010, which is slated November 5-7, will also showcase several potential and variations of Banana not only as an agricultural sector but also as a unique cuisine shall be presented.

"This summit would open a lot opportunity especially among Dabawenyos to be updated of the high tech approach and important things that they must know about the Banana sector," Holganza said.

She said Date 2010's theme: "Building the Future: Innovation towards Global Agriculture" would also give chance and opportunity to other agricultural sectors such as mango, cacao, coconut and vegetables to create a niche in the Philippine market.

Link biodiversity with food security: MRDP (http://www.edgedavao.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=3481:link-biodiversity-with-food-security-mrdp&catid=37:agri-trends&Itemid=71)
Monday, 01 November 2010 00:00

Mindanao’s biodiversity is one of the country’s richest. but it is also highly at risk.
Results from the participatory resource appraisal and rapid social assessment (PRA-RSA) of the Mindanao Rural Development Program (MRDP) revealed that the island region’s forests are diminishing.
The PRA-RSA further showed that Mindanao’s marine ecosystems are continuously being challenged as well as the species that thrive in these environments are continuously being threatened.
To reverse this trend, the MRDP is currently implementing the Global Environment Facility (GEF) grant that will provide alternative livelihood in identified conservation sites. GEF is an organization that plays a key role in addressing global environmental priorities such as biodiversity, climate change and ozone depletion.
GEF projects are being implemented in Olutanga, Mabuhay, and Talusan in Zamboanga Sibugay; Rizal and Sibutad in Zamboanga del Norte, and V. Sagun in Zamboanga del Sur.
Also included are Marihatag and San Agustin, Surigao del Norte in the Caraga region, Datu Blah Sinsuat, Maguindanao; and Lamitan, Basilan in the ARMM.
These sites have been found to house globally significant species such as dugongs, marine turtles, manta rays, giant clams, whale sharks, diverse mangroves and other flora and fauna.
MRDP program director Lealyn Ramos underscored the need for a critical mass that will communicate the importance of biodiversity conservation and the consequence of its loss.
To address this concern, a core of advocates was formed during the recent training-workshop on communication and advocacy strategies held in Davao City.
“Biodiversity conservation in coastal and farming areas will only be relevant if it is linked with its impact on farmers’ productivity and food security. We expect the core of advocates to help in raising the level of understanding of our stakeholders and beneficiaries on the value of engaging them in sustainable agri-fishery practices,” Ramos said.
MRDP deputy program director Arnel de Mesa said MRDP-GEF core of advocates is the third batch being formed by the program.
“What is doubly challenging for this batch is that aside from promoting the sustainable projects to be implemented, they will also focus on conservation of globally significant species in their localities,” he said.
Meanwhile, participants, particularly from V. Sagun, said the training in advocacy and communication skills is very relevant, especially that their town is set to implement an information drive on biodiversity conservation.
“We are identified as part of the coral triangle, the most important ecosystem on earth. This means that our local conservation initiatives will definitely have global significance,” they said. (Noel T. Provido/DA-MRDP)

Dabawenyos learn the ropes of stock trading (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/business/dabawenyos-learn-ropes-stock-trading)

IT WAS a long pent-up demand that one sees on the faces of people who turned up in a stock trading seminar forum in Davao City to learn the basics of buying and selling stocks in the stock market and making sure they really make money -- instead of racking up big losses like most “investors” do these days.

That was why it wasn’t surprising to see a young experienced stock trader, 27-year-old Jurgen Valderrama who already trade stocks on Citiseconline.com -- sign up at the seminar to learn more strategies on “cutting losses” when they are still small and “riding profits” when the stock price keep rising.

“I signed up for this stock trading seminar because I want to learn how to maximize the profits I make in the stock market,” Valderrama said.

But most of those who turned up as seminar participants last October 16 at the D’Counter Inn function room were newbies in the stock market, who wanted to learn the ins and outs of buying and selling stocks and making profits.

It was the first time that this type of seminar was held in Davao City. Previous seminars before covered primarily the “basics” of stock market and how it operates in this country, with no effort whatsoever to help new investors or traders learn the techniques of buying and selling stocks, minimizing losses and making big profits from stock trading.

Lawyer Alejo Bulseco Jr. also wanted to know the basics of “trading stocks” in the stock market on his own and from the looks of it, it was a very fruitful session for him.

"I just wanted to know more about stock trading after hearing so much about this from friends," said Bulseco, a veteran insurance executive.

It wasn't just men who want to learn to trade stocks at the seminar. Menchu Gudian also wanted to "learn how to trade" stocks in the stock market pointing out that it was pointless to park their savings or retirement funds in a bank and earning only 5% a year in interest -- when it's possible to earn as much as 50% or more annually in profits in the stock market.

Also eager to learn stock trading was junior executive Anthony Madrazo, 30, of Sumitomo Fruits who had been fascinated by things he sees on Bloomberg, the running ticker tape over ANC (All News Channel) and the stock quotations printed in the business page of national newspapers.

"I just got to learn about the stock market and stock trading" he said during the half-day seminar.

Young executive Sim Gonzales of Coastland Construction turned up at the stock trading seminar to absorb as much as he could about the stock market and how it works and see how stock trading could be turned into a regular business -- earning big profits as he builds his own company.

"I've always wanted to attend a seminar on the stock market and how I can buy and sell stocks on my own," he said.

Several requests had been received by seminar organizer Pinoy Stock Trader website (www.pinoy777.wordpress.com) for the next schedule of this seminar set on November 20 Saturday at the same venue with names and inquiries sent thru mobile 09084699301 for advanced reservations.

A similar education seminar by the Philippines Stock Exchange (PSE) was earlier scheduled last September 19-23 but was apparently cancelled due to low response from the public in this southern city, eager to ride the current “bull run” in the stock market.

BayanTel helps lolas, lolos learn computer, Net (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/business/bayantel-helps-lolas-lolos-learn-computer-net)

SOME 100 lolos and lolas availed of the free basic Internet and computer training conducted by the Bayan Telecom (Bayantel), in coordination with the Systems Technology Institute (STI)-Davao, at the activity center of NCCC Mall of Davao on Friday.

The training is part of Teach Lola, an advocacy program of Bayantel.

STI's 12 volunteer trainers taught participants on the basics regarding computers and the Internet in a classroom setup at the mall's ground floor.

The participants were also introduced to the most visited Internet sites, search engines, and the most talked-about Facebook.

In a statement, John Rojo, Bayantel's vice president for corporate brand and communications, said that this advocacy program is intended to solve the generation gap between old and young people.

This program would also help build the relationship between young people and their parents as well as with their grandparents.

"We are taking the Teach Lola program on the road to in an effort to further spread our message that grandparents and grandchildren can communicate more richly through the internet," the statement said.

Many learners showed their gratitude to the patient mentors who have taught them things about computers and Internet.

"Gusto ko maka-kat-on ug Facebook kay gusto nako makita akong anak nga naa sa abroad (I want to learn how to use Facebook because I want to see my child who works abroad)," said Divina Amora, 73.

While teaching children requires a lot of effort and patience, teaching the elderly needs extra patience and passion in order to make transfer of knowledge happen.

"There are few learners who can catch up very quickly but there were also a few who need an extra attention because they don't have any background in the use of computers and Internet," said trainer Niño Bagamon of STI. (Jereco O. Paloma)

Commentary - Investment priorities (http://www.edgedavao.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=3489:commentary-investment-priorities&catid=36:vantage-points&Itemid=70)

by Robert "Boyet" Quinto

DAVAO City’s private and public sectors should first assess its assets or its strengths and capitalize on these.
Davao is a place that is blessed with a cool 19 degC mountain area and sunny beaches which are within less than an hour’s drive from downtown.
Davao is typhoon-free, a place where rainfall is practically even throughout the year with some exceptions.
Davao City is obviously a place for agriculture, tourism, a haven for retirement and simply a very ideal place to live in.
Agriculture is already here. By all means, let us all support it. Let us protect it from people who, in the guise of being environmentalists, are out to kill our strength that has been feeding us since we were born. All of us should show our concern by being prudent in knowing who are our allies in progress and who are not. Let’s learn from the more developed countries’ experiences, both good and bad. It has to be sustainable. After bananas then coconut, coffee, cacao, vegetables, fruits, flowers, etc.
Tourism. This is more of our people’s attitude. It has to blend with our natural endowment. The city government has to continue to have the political will, at least maintain, if not improve much more in what is commonly known as good manners and right conduct. In littering, in traffic enforcement, obeying the city ordinances that we are famous of (smoking ban, fire cracker ban, petty crimes, clean, etc.) Every taxi driver should be the first to follow the traffic laws and should be the most courteous person in Davao because they are our frontlines in tourism.
I remember the time when even the wife of then Land Transportation Office regional director Tonying Llamas had to attend a seminar for traffic violation in Almendras Gym. It has to be in the gym because thousands were caught including doctors, lawyers, professionals etc. With this, even by word of mouth, Davao has been a favourite tourist destination especially of domestic visitors.
Other opportunities will follow like conventions, conferences, etc. One important thing that i think we should take care of in tourism is to cater to family-oriented and family-friendly tourism. Taking from the policy of SM of not showing R18 movies, the other reason aside from moral values is that, movies like Harry Potter, StarWars, Disney movies etc, get a horde of people, families by families watching the movie. Look at R18 movies. Do you see same hordes of people? On the contrary, people going there are very discreet. They go inside one by one so as not to attract attention and on the wee hours of the day. They are never a box-office hit. The same with tourism. We want families and families to come and enjoy. It will be wholesome. We should frown on the flesh trade type of tourism. By doing this, we shield ourselves from a lot of short and long term problems like breakdown in family values, infidelity, promisciusness, sexually transmitted deceases etc. It is only then when we can be assured of a sustainable tourism business. Good and healthy living begets good and healthy people.
Real Estate and Retirement havens. I was told by our friend Joey Lim that real estate will continue to boom. He said, just consider the Filipinos who went abroad in the 50’s and 60’s and on. They will be coming back to retire here. Not to mention the retired foreigners marrying Filipinas, OFWs buying homes for their love ones etc. This could easily result to more entrepreneurs coming to Davao and Davaoenos themselves will have more opportunities.
Services. Having mentioned the above sectors, The Services sector will be in demand. Medical, health, Information Technology and communication, and education.
The idea of dealing with our economy should be market or demand and opportunity driven. We should always be alert in knowing what our customer wants, we should know their level of satisfaction with our products and services. And we should always be some steps ahead of our competitors (other cities). Let’s be good in the domestic market as well as in the foreign market. This will lessen the impact of foreign economic shocks and crises.

Better transport system eyed

DAVAO CITY -- Recommendations of a transport system study to be funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) will be integrated into this city’s development plan, which is due for revision next year.

Roberto P. Alabado III, acting head of the City Planning and Development Office, told journalists here that the ADB is choosing the consultancy firm that will conduct the study.

Instead of establishing new road networks, he said, the study will likely address vehicle use efficiency. The new system will likely include a bus rapid transport system that will provide regular, frequent trips for public commuters.
This city used to have public buses, but they could not compete with jeepneys. Today, only interprovincial buses ply the city’s streets and their routes are restricted.

This city has at least 1.5 million residents and it is estimated only a third of the population lives within four kilometers from downtown. There are at least 125,000 vehicles registered in this city, the regional office of the Land Transportation Office said.

Mr. Alabado had said the city government will also try to introduce measures to discourage the use of private vehicles by imposing new levies such as a local road users’ tax.

There had been proposals for a coastal road and a light rail system, but these were shelved due to the high cost involved. -- CQF

We the legitimate business owners are paying the right taxes samantala mga dvd vendors dyan na wala na ngang business permit wala ring resibo galung BIR... Pati nga sari sari stores pinakukuha nang business permit.. Alam naman natin kapirangggot lang kita nila kaysa sa mga dvd vendors.. Bakit kaya di magawa na maging patas .. Hmm.. Sanitary landfill set to start operations by Dec. - Cenro (http://www.mindanaotimes.net/?p=14657)
Written by: Fusilero , Kristianne
Thursday, 04 November 2010

THE P268-million sanitary landfill in Carmen, Tugbok District will be fully operational by the end of the year, an official of the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro) revealed.

Joseph Dominic Felizarta, officer-in-charge of CENRO, said in a press forum at Marco Polo Hotel yesterday that the sanitary landfill is already ready for operation and they are now only gathering more equipment needed in the landfill.

“Once the sanitary landfill will be fully operational, about 30 percent of the residual wastes will be placed in the facility. The remaining 70 percent of the wastes as collected in the city should be segregated at source particularly in the barangay level,” Felizarta said.

About 600-700 tons of wastes are collected everyday in the city. The volume increased during elections when there were around 750-800 tons per day in which most of the wastes were poll-related materials.

“I expect the opening of the New Carmen sanitary landfill because the Lacson temporary dumpsite has now become a problem. CENRO is listening, I want to see the landfill functional before the year ends,” Duterte-Carpio said in her state of the city address.

Once the landfill starts operating, the city will strictly implement the Anti-Littering Law, particularly the apprehension and penal aspects of the ordinance. The anti-littering team is composed of 30 personnel. To date, the team has only sent out warnings to violators as the office
is still on the process of disseminating the information on the existing laws related to solid waste management.

Meanwhile, Felizarta said the memorandum of agreement between the city government and the AMS-Redwood to establish a segregator facility is now being reviewed by the City Legal Office. He said the agreement is still subject for the approval of the city council.

Felizarta said the agreement will not violate the solid waste management act as the private sector will only aid on the segregation of the wastes since the materials recovery facility at Ma-a slaughterhouse is insufficient to recycle and gather the residuals from the wastes.

The city government, on the other hand, is backing the plan to build a segregator facility.

“I cannot wait for grassroots segregation to take-off, thus, I have ordered the negotiation of a private sector segregator facility before the residual waste may be deposited into the landfill,” Duterte-Carpio said.

Mag hire naman gyud ug private segregator ang city.. Marami kasing barangay and individual household dili nagatuman...dapat kasi may MRF (material recovery facility) bawat barangay.. Kaso may mga ibang barangay hinay political will balaud sa segragation.. Kaya private company na lang mag segregate ..:)

Sta. Lucia starts ninth project in Davao (http://www.bworldonline.com/main/content.php?id=20592)

DAVAO CITY -- Sta. Lucia Realty and Development, Inc. has launched its ninth project here, a 14-hectare residential subdivision near the Davao International Airport, about 10 kilometers north of the city’s central business district.

The project, located at the Davao City Diversion Road and a 30-minute ride from this city’s downtown, is dubbed Valle Verde Residential Estate. It will have a commercial center that will host shops and restaurants, a clubhouse, meditation and recreation areas, as well as sports facilities like a basketball court and a swimming pool.

“Before, [there] was a wall that separated this area from the outside.

But Sta. Lucia [is tearing that down] with its fully furnished developments,” said Liezel Tuason-Magpoc, vice-president for sales and marketing of Orchard Property Marketing Corp., Sta. Lucia’s marketing arm.

Ms. Magpoc said Valle Verde will also feature “wide concrete road walks and paved sidewalks, an underground storm drainage system, a centralized water system, electrical facilities, and a landscaped entrance in line with the company’s residential subdivision norms.

Sta. Lucia has eight existing projects, three of them golf and leisure communities, in Davao since it started operations here in 1997. These are Rancho Palos Verdes Golf and Residential Estates, Sun City Golf and Residential Estates, South Pacific Golf and Leisure Estates, Green Meadows, Alta Monte, Davao Riverfront Corporate City, Las Palmas, and Ciudad Verde.

Jim Patrick Pilapil, marketing and training supervisor of Orchard Property, told BusinessWorld a 120-square-meter lot in Valle Verde will cost P600,000.

“The total inventory is more than 500 lots,” he said, although he declined to reveal how many lots have been sold so far. -- Joel B. Escovilla

Korek ka dyan Sir.The problem in the country's taxation system is with it's tax collection and who should be taxed and when does tax come into play as regards income(how much do you have to earn before you start paying tax). They should review the system. Our revenue would have been greater.OT ba ito?

Iran resumes import of RP bananas; players cite RDC (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/business/iran-resumes-import-rp-bananas-players-cite-rdc)

STAKEHOLDERS of the Philippine banana export industry yesterday thanked the Regional Development Council, particularly its economic and social development committees, for their empathy to the industry as it grappled with problems anent its exports to Iran.

This developed after Iran announced the Philippine banana is not included in the list of fruits the Iranian government has banned for importation since September.

Iranian demand for Philippine bananas was placed at 32,357,964,000 boxes last year per figures released by the Philippine Quarantine Service. It generated for the Philippine economy badly needed foreign exchange earnings of PHP4.8 billion and directly benefited 216,000 residents in 11 Mindanao provinces.

Importation of Philippine bananas by Iran was temporarily stopped the first week of September pending issuance by Iranian authorities of import permits to Iranian fruit importers.

The situation triggered a search for alternative markets by industry leaders and the adoption of risk-mitigation measures to cushion the negative impact of Iran's non-importation of bananas to the livelihood of thousands of farm workers and farmers in Mindanao.

A six-point package of options identified by the RDC's Economic Development Committee and Social Development Committee called for the opening of new markets for Philippine bananas, explore the possibility of bartering Philippine bananas for oil and promoting domestic demand for Cavendish bananas.

"We would like to express our appreciation to the Iranian government for not including Philippine bananas, papayas and pineapples in the list of 49 fruits that they banned for importation," said Stephen Antig, executive director of the Pilipino Banana Growers and Exporters Association (PBGEA).

Antig said that "the non-inclusion of bananas from the list indicates that the fruits are considered essential because of their superior vitamin and mineral contents."

He also cited, in behalf of the PBGEA, the efforts of the Philippine Embassy in Tehran and the Philippine Consulate in Dubai for "their diligence and hard work in maintaining our line of communication with Iranian fruit importers, trade and agriculture officials."

Antig said that industry leaders are looking forward to consulting Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala on a holistic roadmap for the Philippine export banana industry after today's opening rites of the First Philippine Banana Summit hosted by the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Exec vows to make city next tourism destination (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/local-news/exec-vows-make-city-next-tourism-destination)

DAVAO as next top tourist destination in the country is feasible, an official of the City Tourism and City Investment Promotions Office (CTCIPO) said.

Jason Magnaye, chief of CTCIPO, told reporters in Wednesday's Club 888 forum that they will make Davao attractive to tourists as well as to locals.

"Before we could offer Davao to tourists from different parts of the Philippines, and the rest of the world, we should first set Davao as welcoming and appreciable to them," he said.

According to Magnaye, just like throwing parties, before catering to some guests, some preparations should be done just to have a welcoming atmosphere, so guests will feel as though they're in their own houses.

"If these tourists would have a remarkable experience in our city, they will most probably recommend to their friends that Davao is a great place to visit and they have a lot of things to do here," Magnaye said.

Magnaye said Davao has a lot of things to offer tourists, from the varied aspects of tourism to the city's radiant culture.

Davao, Magnaye said, has a wide selection of potential activities for tourists, from in-lands to highlands.

"Our city is incomparable to other key cities of the Philippines, especially in terms of tourism and tourist destination," he said.

Magnaye said that staying in Davao gives visitors a lot of opportunity to experience the different aspects of tourism.

From the mouthful of food delicacies that are unique in the city, it also offers the nightlife that has a touch of the Dabawenyos. (Jereco O. Paloma)

6th Mindanao Media Summit to tackle peace process with MILF (http://mindanews.com/main/2010/11/05/6th-mindanao-media-summit-to-tackle-peace-process-with-milf/)
By Mindanews | Friday| November 5, 2010 | Filed under: Top Stories

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/4 Nov) – Updates on and prospects for the peace negotiation between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) will take center stage during the three-day 6th Mindanao Media Summit at the Garden Oases Hotel here which begins Friday.

GRP peace panel chair Marvic Leonen and his counterpart in the MILF, Mohagher Iqbal, have been invited to speak in the forum together with other government officials and leaders of civil society groups, the Mindanao Media Forum (MMF), the Summit organizer, said.

Secretary Teresita Deles, Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process, will deliver a keynote address at the opening ceremonies, MMF added.

In addition, Maj. Gen. Datuk Baharom bin Hamzah and Steven Rood will talk about the International Monitoring Team and the International Contact Group, respectively, as mechanisms of the peace talks.

Hamzah heads the IMT which monitors the compliance of the Philippine government and the MILF with the ceasefire agreement forged in 2003, while Rood is country representative of The Asia Foundation, an ICG member.

President Aquino was invited to deliver a message on the last day of the Summit but declined owing to “prior commitments”.

Talks between the GRP and the MILF bogged down in 2008, after the Supreme Court stopped the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement on Ancestral Domain. MILF fighters attacked Kolambugan and Kauswagan towns in Lanao del Norte shortly after the SC decision.

US presence in Mindanao will also be put under close scrutiny in an input to be delivered by Frencie Carreon, who is taking up doctoral studies in peace journalism at the University of Sydney Center for Peace and Conflict Studies.

Luz Rimban and Yvonne Chua, both of VERA files, will discuss the topics “social media for journalists” and “media ethics, safety and security”.

Rowena Paraan, executive director of the Media Safety Program of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines will present an update on the Ampatuan Massacre case which turns one year on Nov. 23.

The Summit aims to gather editors, radio and television station managers and other senior journalists in Mindanao. It started in 2002, to discuss the problems confronting Mindanao’s media and to propose solutions, given the national media’s perceived arrogance in deciding what is and is not news in Mindanao.

Its theme was “Ito ba ang pangyayaring nagaganap sa Lupang Ipinangako” (Is this really what’s happening in the Land of Promise?).

This year’s Summit has the theme “Mindanao 2020: Moving Forward.”

“It (theme) reflects our desire to harness our strength to rise up to the challenge of ‘a media that is responsible and able to police its own ranks’,” the MMF said.

The major sponsors of the Summit are The Asia Foundation, Embassy of Canada, Aboitiz Power and Bounty Ventures. (MindaNews)

Achievements and Recognition

Most Competitive Metro City in the Philippines, 2001, 2003, 2005
The Asian Institute of Management has conducted an assessment of the leading Cities in the country using indicators such as quality of life, cost of doing business, dynamism of the local economy, infrastructure, linkages and accessibility, and quality of workforce in the years 2001, 2003, and 2005 (No survey was done in 2002 and 2004) and Davao City topped the rankings in 2001 and 2005 and placed 3rd in 2003.

Most Livable City in the Philippines
Based on annual surveys made by Asiaweek on the 40 Best Cities in Asia, Davao City has consistently made it to the Top 20 for four consecutive years (1996-1999). In the survey of livability, Davao City rated high in the following categories:

2nd in the least number of criminal cases per 10,000 at 0.8
5th in lesser vehicles per km of city road at 46 vehicles/km
6th in the ratio of house price to income at 6.18
14th in lesser volume of suspended particles in the air at 98 ?g/m³
14th in value of state education spending per capita/$ at 410.80

Davao garnered 56 points and ranked 18th. Cebu got 54 points and ranked19th while Manila was in a freefall with 49 points down at 25th.

This statistics mean that Davao City has become the Most Livable City in the Philippines. If the survey, which is independently done by Asiaweek, becomes a basis, it could be said that Davao has maintained its quality of livability as a city and is in fact improving on it.

Destination of the Year, 1997 Kalakbay Awards
1997 was supposed to be the banner year of Davao City having earned a lot of distinctions in the national arena. Aside from being chosen as the Destination of the Year by the Kalakbay Awards, tourism facilities within the city were also recognized with the highest honors in their respective categories such as Hotel of the Year for Villa Margarita and Restaurant of the Year for Annies Restaurant.

Most Child-friendly City in the Philippines, 1999, 2000
In the first ever selection of the Most Child-Friendly City in the Philippines, Davao City came out the runaway choice for the top plum owing to its local government’s programs and initiatives directly benefiting its children.

Davao City stood out because it is the first local government unit to have passed a Code specifically designed for the welfare of the children and their rights to services, Protection, and other privileges - this is the Davao City Children’s Welfare Code of 1994.

Aside from the regular social welfare programs being implemented by the City Social Services and Development Office, the local government works closely with non-government agencies that implements programs for children.

The Davao City Government also got high marks because of its implementation of the child welfare and protection programs under the Country Program for Children – UNICEF.

Most Outstanding Regional Peace and Order Council, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2005
The quest for peace has become very expensive and very elusive in some isolated parts of Mindanao. However, there is one region where peace has become a price possession that its leaders never want such ideal condition slip out from their hands – the Region XI Peace and Order Council was chosen as the Most Outstanding Regional Peace and Order Council for their unrelenting efforts in maintaining peace and order in Southern Mindanao or Region XI.

Most Peaceful City in East and Southeast Asia, 1998-2005
One of the biggest come-ons of an area is an ideal peace and order condition. The dramatic decrease of crime rate in Davao City is big deal considering that it used to have a very unstable peace and order during the Marcos’ regime that ended in a bloodless revolution in February 1986.

Since then, peace and order has never been more ideal. In fact, it improves year after year thanks to a people who will not let peace slip away like a prized possession.

From a 3-digit crime rate per 10,000 people in 1985, Davao has reached an almost Utopian environment with a monthly crime volume of 0.8 cases per 10,000 persons from 1999 up to 2005. Digging through the records, it would reveal that about 90% of these cases reported are petty crimes that do not in any way threaten the over-all peace and order condition of the city.

Best Police Office in the Country, 1999-2005
Annually, the Philippine National Police conducts an evaluation of the Best Police Offices in the Country. They will be evaluated and ranked according to the ratio of policemen against the population of the area, implementation of programs for maintenance of peace and order, availability of sophisticated equipment and vehicles, the ratio of solved crimes against the total number of crimes reported and the overall safeguarding of the peace and order condition of the area.

2nd place, LGU Literacy Award in the Philippines, 1999
This award is given to local government units that seek to improve literacy within their area through programs that will ensure the establishment of learning institutions even in the most remote rural areas. Davao City ranked a close second in this competition having registered one of the highest literacy rates in the country and in Southeast Asia at 98.05%.

2nd Best City Health Office in the Philippines, 1999
Vaccines, medicines, and clinical and medical services may cost much nowadays. A local government unit should see to it that medical services are affordable if not given for free especially to rural folks and the urban poor. In this area of recognition, the local Government of Davao again ranked a close second in operating a City Health Office that delivers free and or very affordable services to its constituents aside from implementing health programs that focuses on prevention of sickness and illnesses.

The Cleanest and Greenest City in the Philippines, 1999-2005
(Highly urbanized category)
For almost a decade, Davao City ranked Second Cleanest and Greenest City in the Philippines. Visitors cannot but help notice that the city’s roads are indeed clean day and night and the parks are eternally green with trees and ornamentals. But the top plum seems slippery because of an open dumpsite located along its diversion road.

Now, the City is considered the Cleanest and Greenest in the Philippines
(For the highly urbanized category)

Most Outstanding Water Utility in Asia, 1996, 1997, 1998
(Awarded in Singapore to Davao City Water District)
This recognition was given to four water utilities in Asia, and Davao City’s water district is one of them. The Davao City Water District has through the years supplied quality potable water to residents of the city.

The need to deliver quality service is equally complemented by the natural abundance of fresh and potable water supply, which contributes to the quality of life in the City. Around 90% of the City’s water supply is taken from a more than 30 wells while the remaining 10% is treated surface water.

The Davao City Water District (DCWD) has made piped water system available to about 70% of the population. This figure may be surprisingly low for people expecting a highly urbanized city. However, a visit to the City will show that hundreds of natural wells and other natural sources of spring water abound in the City, particularly in areas near the foot of the highest peak in the country, the Mt. Apo.

Davao bags two awards in 21st Travel Mart

by Jade C. Zaldivar
September 21, 2010
Published in the Sun.Star Davao newspaper (www.sunstar.com.ph/davao)

DAVAO City received two awards in the recent 21st Philippine Travel Mart, a nationwide tourism fair held in Manila.

Davao City Investment and Promotions (DCIP) head Jason Magnaye presented the two awards on Monday: one, winning first place in the Best Booth in the Travel Fair City category; and two, the overall champion as Travel Fair People's Choice.

The awards were given on Sept. 5 at the SM Megamall, Megatrade Halls in Mandaluyong City though the trophies only came in last week.

"The first award is for having the best pavilion. Our pavilion had four themes: eco adventure, flaura and fauna, and then yung cultural heritage and bountiful harvest. Pinakita natin sa pavilion yung mga fruits natin, orchids, difference sights so they'd have a feel how it is to be in Davao. There were judges for this who were selected by the Philippine Tour Organization," Magnaye said in an interview at the City Hall.

"The second awards naman is yung mga tao ang pumili kung ano yung pavilion na nagustuhan nila. And we got the most number of votes. After this month we're setting up a monitoring system to see how effective was our participation there, if there really will be more tourists and increases in tourist spending," he said.

Meanwhile, Magnaye noted that the tourism organization in the country have common concern on the effect of the hostage taking crisis August 23.

"I think this is just a temporary setback that we are experiencing. I think both the national and local government is doing their best to counter this unfortunate incident," Magnaye said. "Right now obviously there will be some effects but more than that we're focusing to get back the confidence not just of Chinese nationals but also travelling public, especially foreigners," he said.

Magnaye said the City Government is now preparing a tourism masterplan.

NEDA-XI director awarded as 2010 outstanding civil servant (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&r=&y=&mo=&fi=p101105.htm&no=35)

Davao City (Nov. 5) -- Director Maria Lourdes D. Lim of the National Economic and Development Authority XI was adjudged by the Civil Service Commission (CSC) Awards Committee as one of this year's outstanding civil servants.

This is under the CSC Honor Awards Program (HAP), which recognizes and rewards government officials and employees for outstanding contributions and achievements in the delivery of public service.

His Excellency, President Benigno Simeon Aquino III conferred the awards to the outstanding public servants at the Rizal Hall of the Malacañang Palace on 15 October 2010.

"We will strengthen the bureaucracy. We will reward those who have done the rightful thing to our people? We will work with the Civil Service Commission and we will give our people the rightful duty," President Aquino said during the Awards rites.

Director Lim received the prestigious Pagasa award for her proactive and highly competent leadership in pushing for reforms in peace and development, environmental management, poverty alleviation, and gender and development not only in Davao Region but for Mindanao as a whole.

Her deep concern for the issues of Mindanao and her competent management skills were reflected in her involvement with the Socioeconomic Reconstruction and Development of Conflict-Affected Areas in Mindanao (SERD-CAAM), the Mindanao Strategic Framework Plan (MSDF), Davao Region Development Agenda (RDA), and development projects for the Mindanao River Basin, among others.

Director Lim is one of 23 honorees for the HAP individual categories. Six other awardees were cited under the group category.

Overall, Mindanao has two winners who are both from Davao Region, including P/Supt. Noel R. Ponsaran, the former Regional Chaplain of PNP XI.

The rest of the winners hail from Visayas (2) and Luzon and Metro Manila (25). The awardees were chosen by respected personalities from the public and private sectors.

The 2010 Lingkod Bayan/Pagasa Awards Committee was headed by CSC Chairman Francisco T. Duque III with Ma. Nieves R. Confesor of the Asian Institute of Management as vice chair, and Synergeia Foundation Inc. Chief Executive Officer Milwida M. Guevarra, Chief of Presidential Protocol Miguel A. Perez-Rubio and Philippine Star Associate Editor Marichu A. Villanueva as members.

There are three award categories under the HAP. The Presidential or Lingkod Bayan Award is conferred to an individual or group of individuals for exceptional or extraordinary contributions resulting from an idea or performance that had nationwide impact on public interest, security and patrimony.

The CSC or Pagasa award is conferred to an individual or group for outstanding contributions resulting from an idea or performance that directly benefit a locality, municipality or region.

The Outstanding Public Officials and Employees or Dangal ng Bayan award, on the other hand, is conferred to individuals for extraordinary act or service and consistent demonstration of exemplary ethical behavior. (NEDA-XI) [top]

Alejandre revealed that he will be in charge of the private sector participation in the duration of celebration as business establishments and malls will be enjoined to come up with the best facade and Christmas decoration.

“The mayor wants a contest on establishments with the best Christmas decorations and facade,” he said following the first coordination meeting of the organizing committee yesterday at the conference room of the Acting City Administrator’s Office.

Alejandre said the mayor issued specific instructions to fill the air with Christmas carols, through rondalla rendition contest, choral competition contest where all high school choral groups are expected to participate.

He said the organizing committee has considered closing the Bolton-Rizal intersection toward San Pedro Street and Anda Street intersection to give space for the night market which will also start on Dec.1.

Alejandre said that the mayor opted to change the festivity title from Pahalipay ni Mayor to Pasko Fiesta 2010 to show that the festivities don’t just come from one personality but a communal activity.

Ristorante Spirale Celebrates the Ventisquero Wine Experience (http://www.mindanaotimes.net/?p=14745)
Written by: Dakudao , Michael Angelo E.
Friday, 05 November 2010

OH YES, I easily dropped the Martin Nievera-Gary Valenciano concert last October 28 to attend the Swiss educated chef Annie Cacho-Garcia’s Ventisquero Wine Tasting and Cocktails at her Ristorante Spirale located within the Damosa Business Center, Lanang. And I had no regrets.

Chef Annie’s authentic Italian/Spanish/Mediterranean fares matched with the Ventisquero wines from Chile are now the calling cards of the City’s leading restaurants namely Ristorante Spirale and Buona Terra (along Torres Street). Both restaurants, which are patronized and come highly recommended by Davao’s capricious gourmands and colourful personalities, are owned and operated by chef Annie and her beloved husband, Raffy Garcia.

According to chef Annie, Ventisquero was born out of the enthusiasm and passion for the noble activity of grape growing and winemaking by the Agrosuper Holding, a world leader in the agro-industry. Agrosuper Holding is committed to delivering top quality products which are faithful to tradition and to the benefits of Chilean wines to wine lovers all over the globe.

The Ventisquero wine experts who came to Davao were Rafael Vargas and the Romanian lady, Anca Soiculescu. The 35-year-old Anca, looking pretty like the bride of Dracula, is the export manager for Asia and the Middle East of Ventisquero wines. “I am proud to confirm that Ventisquero wines are distributed in almost all Asian countries including places like Nepal. The Ventisquero main office in Asia is in Hong Kong,” she informed.

“The Philippines was the first Asian country where Ventiquero wines were exported to. As such, the Philippines will always be special for the company,” Anca professed.

Anca pointed out that it is Werdenberg International Corporation which is doing a fantastic job in distributing Ventisquero wines to the country’s urban centers like Manila, Davao, Cebu and even Borracay. “Indeed, Asia is a growing market of wine consumers and this year alone, our exports have increased by as much as 60%. The major market in Asia is, of course, China,” she revealed.

During the wine tasting which gathered Davao’s prominent foodies, vintners and restaurant owners, Rafael Vargas and Anca Soiculescu first served the guests the Whites such as Sauvignon Blanc Reserva 2009 and Chardonnay Reserva 2007. Both are easy on the palate with their good structure and balanced acidity; plus their intense aromas of tropical and citrus fruits. Next came the mature Reds namely Merlot Reserva 2008, Carmenere Reserva 2008, Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva “Queulat” 2008, Shiraz Gran Reserva “Queulat” 2006, and finally, the Grey Carmenere 2006. The Reds are best described as having “great structure, rich flavour and are of superb quality.”

“To taste and then dream. A piece of magic afforded by the palate. We dedicate Chile’s finest Ventisquero wines to the adventurous spirits all over the world who challenge nature and its immensity,” Rafael Vargas exalted. And I raised my glass naturally.

Just as impressive that special night were chef Annie Cacho-Garcia’s gustatory delights. The buffet table had an array of salamis, chorizos, prosciuttos and salchichons; delicious French, Italian, Danish and Swiss cheeses; Davao’s queso queen Olive Puentespina’s new artisan cheeses she named Queso Roberto and Queso Regina; marinated and roasted peppers with grilled Halloumi cheese; a variety of super yummy quiches, among others.

Chef Annie serves delicious and distinctive dishes made from the finest quality ingredients that one doesn’t have to wonder why Ristorante Spirale is always full with diners who want to relax, eat well, and loosen themselves with fine spirits. Just ask Jeannie Pie Garcia!

At Ristorante Spirale expect warm hospitality from Raffy and Annie Garcia, and the efficient Spirale crew. And if Silvia Gomez-Gempesaw is around, you’ll get your free photo shoot as well like I did for this page.

Muchas gracias, Raffy and Annie Garcia. Besos para Silvia Gomez-Gempesaw.

Drug Prevention Week slated for November 14-20 (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/local-news/drug-prevention-week-slated-november-14-20)

DAVAO City Mayor Sara Duterte declared November 14-20 and every third week of November as "Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Week" in the city.

Duterte signed on November 3 Proclamation No. 9 pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 1192, series of 1973 dubbed as the "Nationwide Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Week".

"The City Government of Davao has made drug abuse prevention a priority and has continued its task of improving the quality of life of its citizens, which includes protection from drug addiction and substance abuse," Duterte said.

The Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 emphasizes the policy of the state to pursue an intensive and unrelenting campaign against the trafficking and use of dangerous drugs and other similar substances through an integrated system of planning, implementation and enforcement of anti-drug abuse policies, programs and projects.

"There is greater need for the inclusion of all sectors of the community to join hands and work together to combat drug abuse through celebrations like this one that aim to broaden the knowledge and awareness on the use of illegal substances and its harms," she said.

The Anti-Drug Abuse Council will be spearheading the weeklong celebration of Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Week with the involvement of government and non-government organizations, the barangays and schools.

Meanwhile, random drug testing of 400 City Government male plantilla personnel is currently ongoing.

This started October 16 and would end November 12 as part of the city's Drug Free Workplace Program in coordination with the Department of Health, Duterte said on Tuesday.

She also recently signed Executive Order 24, establishing the city's Anti-Drug Abuse Policy and Drug-Free Workplace Program and instituting the drug testing requirement for all City Government employees and prescribing the implementing guidelines thereof. (Jade C. Zaldivar)

Big trade expo opens (http://www.goldstardailynews.com/davao-region-xi/big-trade-expo-opens)
Friday, 05 November 2010 00:00
Written by EMMANUEL ROLDAN, Correspondent

DAVAO City - The three-day Davao Trade Expo (Date) 2010 opened here.

It was exactly 10 past 9 am when Engr. Robert Quinto, president of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCCI), declared the opening of the trade expo. The atmosphere at the crowded convention hall of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Building was euphoric albeit solemn as Quinto also declared the historic Philippine Global Banana Summit from open.

Participants were welcomed by Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio who took note on the valuable contribution of the banana industry and agriculture sector as a whole in the economic development and prosperity of the region. Lualhati Antonino, chair of the Mindanao Development Authority (Minda) read the keynote message on behalf of President Aquino. In the message, Aquino outlined the government's programs to boost agricultural production of the country especially in Mindanao to avoid if not decrease the vulnerability of the people from the onslaught of natural calamities and the country's over dependence on imported food products like rice.

Wit Holganza, chairperson of Date 2010, gave an overview of the whole expo as well the importance of the county's first Banana Summit. She reiterated the need for both government and private sectors' support to the banana industry, either for export or for local consumption, as an effective motor of development in the region. Data from the DCCCI shows about 70 exhibitors joined this year's expo.Holganza thanked the key industry stakeholders and the government agencies like the Department of Agriculture, Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Science and Technology, and the local City Government of Davao and of course the DCCI for making the expo possible.

Agriculture Secretary Prospero Alcala delivered presentation of the Philippine Agricultural Development Plan that the new administration had hammered on. He said that Mindanao would have a big role to play because of its inherent geographical advantage and the widely untapped valuable resources like trained and trainable human capital, vast idle fertile lands and big improvements in infrastructure facilities and advancement in information technology.

In the press briefing after the first leg of the summit, Alcala bared the implementation of the farmer's e-card where farmers and stakeholders could easily exchange notes on agricultural development, technology, pricing, emergency, etc. through the information technology. "The (agriculture) department will launch the e-card program where farmers, stakeholders, and probably media will have ready access to an information system about agri-related issues," Alcala said. He did not elaborate though on the details on how the system really works in the field.

Off for discussion on the second leg of the expo are the global gaps on agricultural products like banana, strengthening on value chain for the banana industry, finding new markets, developing new varieties of bananas for global market, natural farming technology, to name a few. Most resource persons are local and foreign industry experts.

In the list of foreign speakers are Johan Maris, director of Certifications, Control Union World Group; Dr. Ulrich Hoffman, head of Trade, Environment and Development of the UN Conference on Trade and Development; Dr. Chin-Ping Chao, Research, Taiwan Banana Research Institute and David Wofl, agricultural attaché, US Department of Agriculture; and Indian Ambassador Shri Yogendra Kumar.

You come here to eat (http://www.dailymirror.ph/Nov-2010/11052010/week.html)
BY MAYA M. PADILLO

In the mood for grilled dishes or kare-kare? Pnoy Resto, located at Victoria Plaza compound in Bajada, is the place to satisfy your cravings.

Pnoy derives its name from “Pinoy” and is descriptive of the dishes served – from grilled to salad to main dishes – all so Davao and so pinoy!

“The restaurant carries the name that is easy to recall,” general manager Salvacion Serrano said.

Many Pinoy recipe and the resto has it: grilled tuna belly and other seafood such as pompano, shrimp, and crab.

Pnoy boasts of it s kare-kare (ox tail and ox tripe in peanut butter sauce), the bestseller and specialty of the house. It is the favorite of diners who frequent Pnoy, including Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.

The steamed crab is also a must try. It is served with homemade cream sauce of tomato and herbs personally made by the in-house chef. Pnoy has three chefs from Cebu City.

Though the restaurant has a fine dining concept, it has “pangmasa” whiff. The menu is packed with everybody’s favorite recipes with prices as affordable from P60 to P300. Abre gana (appetizer) consists of chicharon bulaklak, hinornong scallop (baked scallop), pinalutong na kangkong, and pinalutong na talangka (crispy crablet).

Craving for Filipino ensaladas? Choices of ensaladang baka ampong manga (roast beef and green mango salad), ensaladang potpotlo, ensaladang puso ng saging (banana heart in vinegar and coconut milk), and ensaladang tuna are at hand.

Popular Pinoy soups such as binacol na manok (native chicken in young coconut soup), imbao (shellfish soup), sinigang, sinampalukang manok (native chicken in tamarind soup), and tinola are served, as well as well-loved recipes for goat, pork, chicken, and beef.

The menu also sizzles with gambas, lengua (ox-tongue in gravy), pochero (beef shank in pomodoro sauce), and tiyan ng bangus sa gata (milkfish belly in coconut milk).

The service is impressive. No need to call the waiters’ attentions because they straightaway refill water and change your used plate.

The resto not only dishes up real Pinoy recipes, it also exudes ambiance that is very Davao, from the interior, service, and the VIP rooms carrying the themes popular to Dabawenyos such as Durian, Mount Apo, Agila, Waling Waling, Tuna, and Mandaya.

The six VIP rooms can accommodate 12 people but can cater to 72 people when entirely open.

Pnoy Resto is the ideal dining place for medical practitioners/groups and corporate. It is open from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m for lunch and 5:30 p.m to 10 p.m. for dinner.

DOE chief orders fast-track rehabilitation of nation’s power plants (http://www.businessmirror.com.ph/home/regions/2414-doe-chief-orders-fast-track-rehabilitation-of-nations-power-plants)

Energy Secretary Jose Rene Almendras has ordered utilities that bought government assets to fast track the rehabilitation of power plants to mitigate the worsening power crisis in the country.

“I have given two or three letters already to the companies that bought government assets, pleading with them to accelerate the rehabilitation,” he said in a radio interview.

Almendras said the rehabilitation of power plants is needed since the country is in need of at least 300 megawatts (MW) of power this year and another 300 MW in 2012, based on the projection of the Department of Energy.

The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP), the power distribution company, said in an Oct. 9 advisory that Mindanao is in need of at least 108

MW this year; Visayas, 141 MW; and Luzon, 686 MW.

Because of the lack of power supply in Mindanao, the NGCP has once more resorted to power curtailment, forcing local-power utilities to resort to rotating brownouts.

In CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY - the capital city of Northern Mindanao, the Cagayan de Oro Power and Light Co. (Cepalco) is imposing two-hour rotating brownouts due to the “continuing power-supply curtailments imposed by the NGCP all over Mindanao.”

“According to NGCP, the power supply shortage is due to the maintenance outage of NPC’s Pulangi 4 (Unit 1) and Agus 6 (Unit 1) hydroelectric plants; nonoperation of Therma Marine’s two power barges; and reduced capabilities of some other NPC hydro plants,” Cepalco said in an Oct. 8 advisory.

Almendras also batted for renewable-energy projects and nonhydropower sources such as coal to insulate the country from power outages.

He said that 300 applicants have already submitted applications for renewable-energy projects in his office.

He said a combination of these power-generation plants are needed to effectively insulate the country from widespread blackouts like what happened in the early 1990s.

For Mindanao, the Energy chief said the island should not just rely on hydro-power plants for its energy needs.

“Our problem in Mindanao is our overdependence on hydropower,” he said, explaining that with climate change now a reality coupled with the El Niño phenomenon, water resources get scarce, threatening power supply in Mindanao.

He said the island needs at least 500 MW of nonhydro baseload generation capacity “since we cannot predict exactly what the water levels will be in Mindanao in the coming years.”

Mindanao presently gets more than 50 percent of its power requirements from hydropower plants operated by the National Power Corp. (NPC).

With this situation, coal-fired power plants become a necessity to supply the needed power demands of the island.

Northern Mindanao, particularly Misamis Oriental, is host to a 200-MW coal-fired power plants operated by the STEAG State Power Inc., which is composed of

Aboitiz Power Corp., Evonik Steag GmbH of Essen, Germany, and the La Filipina Uy Gongco Corp.

Conal Holdings Corp. of the Alcantara clan is also reported pushing with their 200-MW coal-fired power plant project in Sarangani province.

The Aboitiz Power Corp. is also adamant in pushing through with its P15-billion, 200-MW fluidized-bed coal power plant in Davao City, said Erramon Aboitiz, chief operating officer.

Aboitiz said this coal plant is expected to start operation in 2014.

“The company sees a coal plant as the best source of electricity from the standpoint of reliability, affordability, and safety,” he said in explaining why the company is diversifying into coal plants instead of building more hydropower plants in Mindanao.

Phinma property unit may go public in 2011 (http://www.businessmirror.com.ph/home/companies/2036-phinma-property-unit-may-go-public-in-2011)

Phinma Property Holdings Corp., a developer of affordable homes, is reviving a plan to hold an initial public offering (IPO) next year to take advantage of the stock market’s surge.

Willie Uy, Phinma Properties president and chief executive officer, told the BusinessMirror that the company plans to undertake as many as 14 new projects, some of which will be located in previously untapped markets in the Visayas and Mindanao, before proceeding with the IPO.

Uy did not provide financial figures for the planned fund-raising measure, as the developer has yet to select an underwriter. Prior to the global financial crisis in 2008, Phinma Properties was projecting to raise about P1 billion from an initial share sale.

“We are now studying an IPO carefully. But we would like to do it within 2011 and we would like to do it while the market is hot,” Uy said in an interview.

“It seems the market is receptive to new IPOs  and Phinma Properties has a good story,” he added.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange Index recently breached the 4,000 level, an all-time high, and some analysts expect the market’s main barometer to top 5,000 by the end of next year.

Phinma Properties, which is 35.3- percent owned by publicly listed Phinma Corp.,  has been focusing on mid-rise condominium developments within Metro Manila, selling units priced from  below P1 million to P1.8 million.

Demand for these units remains strong with the company forecasting to increase full year profits to P195 million, from P132.19 million in 2009.. Uy said this profit would result from projected revenue which is expected to improve from last year’s P1.3 billion, mainly from real-estate sales.

The property developer has also been adding new projects to the pipeline, as it is “fast running out of inventory” on the back of robust domestic sales.

Uy said the company recently launched Asya Enclaves Alabang, a 3.5-hectare development in Muntinlupa City featuring three-gated Asian-themed residential condominium communities, which will be developed over the next two-and-a- half years.

Asya Enclaves will offer a total of about 1,800 units, he said.

Moreover, the company is close to acquiring two new properties, each under three hectares, in Quezon City and near the Parañaque area.

Uy added that the developer is also likely to proceed with pending joint -venture deals in Cebu and Davao City to jumpstart its expansion outside Luzon.

“The market is right for us to come in. The price range of condominiums in Davao is similar to Metro Manila prices so if we introduce our projects there, it will be advantageous,” he said.

Phinma Properties’ main mid-rise community developments include Fountain Breeze in Sucat, Parañaque and Quezon City developments  Floro Vista in Commonwealth Avenue  and Sofia Bellevue in Capital Hills Drive.

It also has low-cost horizontal communities in Cavite and Laguna and upscale townhouse projects near Forbes Park in Makati City and in Quezon City.

The company reported via its website that said it has built over 7,000 condominium units in Metro Manila.

Jason Magnaye of the CTCIPO, said residents and visitors alike can expect a colorful Christmas.

"Everyone who will visit and stroll around the city will be delighted with the unique decorations that the city has," Magnaye said.

Magnaye said they intend to make Davao a place to visit during the season to attract tourists from different parts of the country.

For this year, there will be night markets put up in key areas of the city, aside from barangay-based celebrations that will culminate in one grand activity at City Hall.

The traditional Pasko Fiesta celebration that erstwhile Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has set in place will remain.

The centerpiece this Christmas will be the Rizal and People's Park, he said.

"We will do this to show to the rest of the world how creative and hospitable Dabawenyos are," he added.

Magnaye said this effort of the local government of Davao will form part of the city's preparation to become a prime tourist destination not only in Mindanao but throughout the Philippines. (Jereco O.Paloma)

TAXI drivers play a vital role in the tourism growth of Davao City, the City Tourism and City Investment Promotions Office (CTCIPO) said.

Jason Magnaye, head of CTCIPO, said just like other key officials in the City Government, taxi drivers play an important role in the promotion of Davao's tourism industry.

Magnaye said taxi drivers are tourism frontliners who have the first-hand encounter with local and foreign tourists who would ask drivers about tourist destinations in the city, from coffee shops to hotels.

As part of community-based tourism, Magnaye said they plan to conduct training of taxi drivers on the proper handling of tourists, proper knowledge of different tourist spots and destinations in the city, and how taxi drivers can contribute to city's tourism growth.

"We have a lot of things in our city that we can offer out visitors, we just have to know what these are," Magnaye said, adding that the city has a big opportunity to shine in tourism industry.

"Davao's culture is richer than any other major cities in the country, so must develop these potentials in order to meet our visitors' expectations," he added. (JOP)

it's a long list of awards and recognition..marami pa ang wala dyan sa list..

what's good about davao is that it doesn't rest on its laurels kaya lagi tayo dito trailblazer sa mindanao and that's a fact! :)

Apo.

Aquino urges Mindanao agri to strive harder (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/local-news/aquino-urges-mindanao-agri-strive-harder)
Friday, November 5, 2010

PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III urged stakeholders in Mindanao's agriculture to strive harder to keep the sector thriving, as he cited agriculture's vital role in his economic development thrusts.

In a prepared speech delivered by Mindanao Development Authority (Minda) chair Lualhati Antonino in Friday's opening of the Davao Trade Expo (Date 2010), along with the First Global Banana Summit, at Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas in Davao City, Aquino also lauded Davao Region for its contribution to the steady growth of banana production in the country.

The Philippines now ranks third among banana exporting countries in the world, behind Belgium and Ecuador.

"The country's banana production in the last five years, form 2005 to 2009, has been increasing by an average of five percent annually. I am proud that Davao has been a great contributor for this growth, being one of the top five major banana producing regions, together with Northern Mindanao, Soccsksargen, Cagayan Valley and the Armm," he said.

He said the holding of the banana summit, which will be concluded Saturday, November 6, is timely to gear up for the expected growth of banana demands globally in the next decade.

As such, the industry's potential as chief source of income, employment and export earnings for the country can be realized.

Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Gregory Domingo, in a speech delivered by DTI-Davao City Field Office director Teolulo Pasawa during the opening ceremonies, assured participants the agency has proposed programs and activities to be undertaken to develop new markets for Mindanao agri-industry in the wake of the Iran ban on banana imports from Philippines.

"We need to focus our market development on international trade negotiations, such as exploration of other markets for Cavendish banana," Domingo said.

He said free trade agreements (FTAs), such as the Philippine-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (Pjepa) and other Asean regional FTAs, can provide a platform to further reach out to other economies, such as Japan, Australia, China, the Middle East and other Asian countries.

"We are looking into a counter-trade agreement with Iran wherein they can export their oil to the country instead of paying us in dollar," he said.

Domingo said representatives from the Philippine International Trading Corp. (PTIC), the trading arm of the government attached to the DTI, is set to discuss with banana industry leaders such counter-trade option during the summit.

On the holding of the trade expo, Aquino lauded the organizers, saying it could be an opportunity for Mindanao stakeholders to enrich their knowledge on research and development innovation.

"This also becomes a venue where we can convene and discuss the recent developments in technology and human resource management in order to achieve the global standard in agricultural practice," Aquino said.

Citing figures issued by the National Statistics Coordination Board for the first six months of 2010, agriculture occupies 16.67 percent of the gross domestic product.

"Apart from being a key source of national revenue, agriculture-related jobs are the primary means of livelihood for over a third of the country's labor force," the President wrote in his message. (Nelson C. Bagaforo)

European Parliament officials express interest in Mindanao peace process (http://www.bworldonline.com/main/content.php?id=20730)

DAVAO CITY -- Ranking officials from the European Parliament have expressed interest in how the Aquino administration is handling peace negotiations with rebel groups, specifically the Moros in Mindanao and the communists.

Presidential peace process adviser Teresita Quintos-Deles briefed the officials on issues regarding the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and the Communist Party of the Philippines/New Peoples’ Army/National Democratic Front (CPP/NPA/NDF).

"The EU (European Union) Parliament members requested for an overview of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP) and its current policies," a statement from the peace adviser’s office said.

Among those who met with Ms. Deles were Alistair MacDonald, head of the delegation of the European Commission to the Philippines; Werner Langen, head of Delegation and Chairman of the Parliamentary Delegation for Relations with Southeast Asia/ASEAN; Ivo Belet, second vice-chairman of the Parliamentary Delegation for Relations with Southeast Asia/ASEAN; Wolf Klinz, chairman of the Special Committee on the Financial, Economic and Social Crisis, and committee members Juozas Imbrasas, Francoise Castex, Julie Girling, Marc Tarabella and Burkhard Balz.

"The meeting was a cordial exchange of ideas on the peace process," Ms. Deles said noting the Aquino administration is poised to resume negotiations with the two largest rebel groups in country at anytime. She said the visit is an indicator of the firm partnership between the Philippines and the EU.

The EU earlier confirmed its willingness to participate in the International Monitoring Team (IMT), an international peacekeeping body active in the Mindanao peace process. The IMT is led by Malaysia and composed of members from Brunei, Libya, Japan and Norway.

The EU has also been active in providing development and humanitarian assistance in conflict-affected areas in Mindanao. Earlier this week, the governments of New Zealand and United Kingdom assured their support for the southern peace process, the presidential peace adviser said. -- Darwin T. Wee

Exec vows to make city next tourism destination (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/local-news/exec-vows-make-city-next-tourism-destination)
Friday, November 5, 2010

(Jereco O. Paloma)
