Friday, 05 November 2010 00:00
Ryan Cayabyab and top choral artists nationwide are assembling in Davao City on November 11 to 15 for the first national convention of the Philippine Choral Directors Association (PCDA). PCDA president, Jonathan Velasco, is inviting all choral practitioners and enthusiasts to join the 2010 PCDA National Convention at the Brokenshire Resort and Convention Center for the opportunity to discuss current issues and trends with colleagues, learn from top Filipino and foreign conductors in workshops and master classes, and experience various choral dimensions in concerts of Philippine choirs of international caliber.
Cayabyab leads an international lineup of speakers that include vocologist and phonopedagogue Branko Stark (Croatia), musicologist and Interkultur director for the Asia-Pacific region Thomas Schuele (Germany) and concert pianist Peter Von Weinhardt (Germany). Top Filipino conductors, composer and arrangers who are some of the most sought-after choral clinicians abroad are also taking the masterclass podium: Mark Anthony Carpio, Malou Hermo, Eudenice Palaruan, John Pamintuan, Anna Abeleda-Piquero, and Onyl Torres.
“A Choral Celebration,” the convention’s signature evening concert series will feature the University of Mindanao Chorale (Peter Buaya, conductor) with The Himig Singers (Alvin Aviola, conductor) on November 11; The University of the Philippines Singing Ambassadors (Ed Manguiat, conductor) on November 12; The Chamber Choir of Asia (Jonathan Velasco, artistic director) with Koro Ilustrado (Edmund Piquero Jr. and Anna Piquero, conductors) on November 13; and The Philippine Madrigal Singers (Mark Anthony Carpio, choirmaster) on November 14.
Online registration is ongoing at www.philippinechoraldirectors.com. Discounts for active PCDA members, observers, students and groups are also available. For more information, please call the PCDA Secretary General at (0917) 834-0424 or send e-mail to choral_directors@yahoo.com.ph This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. rodincouch November 6th, 2010, 07:03 AM PBGEA, Sec. Alcala hold consultations in Davao (http://www.dailymirror.ph/Nov-2010/11062010/biz3.html)
It was a working lunch for the top decision-makers of the Philippine export banana industry yesterday as they meet Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala after the opening rites of the First Philippine Banana Summit of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry at the Central Bank of the Philippines Complex.
Stephen A. Antig, executive director of the Pilipino Banana Growers and Exporters Association, told media that “the consultation focused on the adoption of a holistic road-map to sustain Mindanao’s flagship industry.”
“We hope to cover a wide range of issues regarding the industry such as our agricultural practices, the strengthening of the various components of its value chain and the industry’s role in promoting people’s health and protecting the integrity of the environment, ” said Antig.
Mindanao’s export banana industry utilizes a minuscule fraction, around 60,000 hectares or 0.62% of the country’s total agricultural land area of 9,671,000,000 hectares but is the second biggest dollar-earning agricultural enterprise next to coconut.
The Philippines currently ranks as the second biggest banana-exporting country in the world next to Ecuador but first in terms of productivity per hectare.
PBGEA stalwarts are confident that Philippine export bananas will remain highly-competitive in the global market especially if given a boost by government in terms of policy support and securing preferential treatment from governments of importing countries.

rodincouch November 6th, 2010, 01:18 PM Davao re-activates anti-littering team (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&r=&y=&mo=&fi=p101106.htm&no=18)
By Mai Gevera
Davao City (6 November) -- With the re-activation of the anti-littering team, the City Environment and Natural Resources Office is now strictly implementing a no garbage policy during daytime.
Garbage collectors will only roam for collection at a designated time.
The anti-littering team was put back into full force after seeing the need for public cooperation given the lack of garbage trucks collecting the 600 to 700 tons of garbage everyday in the city.
This amount of garbage needs about 40 garbage trucks, however the city only has 20 trucks in operation.
Cenro officer-in-charge Dominique Felizarta said that the city will be imposing fines and penalties to violators.
The creation of anti-littering teams was made legal by the Presidential Decree 825 or the Laws on Anti-littering.
City Ordinance 105 is "an ordinance penalizing the act of littering, scattering, or any careless disposal of waste materials, refuse and other unsanitary things on streets, parks, public buildings and other places in the city."
City mayor Sara Duterte recently bared that one of the major problems in the solid waste management program of the city is the waste segregation at household level.
The city may have enough garbage collectors, trucks, garbage bins, and a sanitary landfill, however, waste disposal will continue to be an issue if the public lacks cooperation on waste segregation. (PIA-XI)

scarletwitch.wanda November 6th, 2010, 07:55 PM Statement on the Bt eggplant controversy
http://www.upmin.edu.ph/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=613:statement-on-the-bt-eggplant-controversy&catid=1&Itemid=19
Written by Rene Estremera | 05 November 2010
We are making the following clarifications in the light of the vicious campaign being waged internationally and in Davao City to discredit the Bt eggplant. Bt eggplant is the subject of a scientific research that aims to promote human health and environment.
1. 1. 1. The Bt eggplant is a variety that combines the superior characteristics of traditional Philippine eggplant varieties and the insect protectant gene of a useful bacterium, the same bacterium used safely as insecticidal spray by organic and conventional farmers alike for 40 years. This bacterium exists naturally in the soil and humans have been exposed to it probably for as long as the existence of the human species. Bt eggplant was developed by the Institute of Plant Breeding, University of the Philippines Los Baños, a public institution. UP Mindanao will test the efficacy of this technology under Davao conditions. This variety will protect human health and the environment by reducing the use of toxic chemical pesticides that farmers traditionally use to control infestations of the eggplant fruit and shoot borer, the insect pest that Bt eggplant effectively controls. Studies have shown substantial economic benefits to farmers and consumer alike with the use of Bt eggplant. Contrary to the lie spread by well funded campaigners that Bt eggplant is designed to promote monopoly of the eggplant seed industry by prohibiting the tradition of saving seed, the Bt eggplant seeds can be saved by farmers as the technology is not legally protected under Philippine laws.
2. 2. 2. The safety of Bt eggplant is guaranteed by the tests conducted by an international group of scientists using internationally accepted standards which are science based. Campaigners who have deceived many Filipinos put too much weight on the opinion of Indian scientist Dr. Puspha Bhargava, who declared Bt eggplant as unsafe. Dr. Bhargava’s opinion is not supported by any verifiable/credible scientific evidence. The Genetic Engineering Approval Committee of India (Dr. Bhargava is an active participant in this committee), the government body that is assigned to evaluate the safety of Bt eggplant in India, has declared Bt eggplant to be safe ignoring the objections of Dr. Bhargava. Six national academies of sciences in India (the Academy is composed of the most senior and respected scientists) have declared Bt eggplant to be safe. Scientific risk assessment over a 10 year period in India and the Philippines done by hundreds of scientists in the public and private sectors has accumulated a body of evidence that indicates that Bt eggplant is at least as safe, probably safer, than ordinary eggplant. Bt corn, a technology that is similar to that of Bt eggplant, has been in use in the Philippines for more than 10 years, without any verifiable report on harm to environment or human health.
3. 3. 3. Anti-Bt eggplant campaigners complain that UP Mindanao is not exerting enough effort to educate the public about Bt eggplant. It is true that we do not have the resources to match the well funded international campaign to discredit Bt eggplant. We have tried to reach the Davao City public through the following activities:
a. Two seminars in the last three months held in our Mintal campus on the risks and benefits of Bt eggplant. The last one was on September 29, when the general public, including barangay officials of Mintal and Bago Oshiro, were invited. In this seminar, the researchers and regulators who were directly responsible for the Bt eggplant technology informed the audience about Bt eggplant.
b. Participation of UP Mindanao in the consultation organized by the Davao City Government-City Agriculturist’s Office at Ateneo de Davao University on September 30. Professor Eufemio Rasco, Jr., one of UP Mindanao’s most senior scientists with the eminent title of UP Scientist and an Academician of the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), gave a 1.5 hour talk about Bt eggplant. Unfortunately, the press people who may have been in attendance were only interested in what Dr. Bhargava had to say. The press account of the consultation was almost entirely about Dr. Bhargava’s biased opinions and practically none of the science based information provided by Prof. Rasco.
c. Prof. Rasco promptly responded to the written request of the City Agriculturist Office for comments regarding Bt eggplant . He even offered the use of UP Mindanao’s library on GMOs for those who like to learn directly what it is about instead of simply listening to Dr. Bhargava’s misleading statements. Prof. Rasco participated in the City Government-organized forum, even if the invitation of the City Agriculturist came during the busiest time in the University (it was the last week of the semester), and on a very short notice, apparently to suit the schedule of Dr. Bhargava.
d. Posting of the Public Information Sheet about the proposed Bt eggplant experiment in the bulletin boards of Bago Oshiro, Mintal and UP Mindanao as early as May 2010. This is because the University believes in proper and accurate dissemination of scientific information.
e. Involvement of two community representatives in the UP Mindanao Institutional Biosafety Committee which monitors the confined field trial.
Please note that UP Mindanao is required by law to do only (d) and (e) above.
4. Regarding the nature of the UP Mindanao experiment, it is a confined field trial, not the open field trial that the anti GMO movement has misled the Davao community about. Thus, our activity is consistent with the wishes of the Davao City Officials for safety assurances. The nature of our experiment could have been clarified in any of the seminars presented above, if only people asked and if only they were prepared to listen. Following the protocol prescribed by AO8 of the Department of Agriculture, a confined field trial means all the plant materials will be destroyed after taking data (nothing will be eaten, nothing will be left in the experimental site). It also means that access to the trial site will be restricted to those authorized by the Bureau of Plant Industry, the statutory body responsible for regulation of this trial. Science-based precautions will be taken to prevent the movement of seed or pollen outside of the experimental area.

Mindanao Conference on Issues in Development, 08-09 November 2010, Brokenshire College, Davao City. Organized by the UP Mindanao-CHED Zonal Research Center -XI.
About the Conference:
In 1990, a shift in the way development is defined was launched by a group of economist with the explicit purpose of “shift[ing] the focus of development economics from national income accounting to people-centered policies.” Based on these parameters for gauging development, the United Nations member states and other international organizations, during the historic Millennium Summit held last 2000, agreed to achieve 8 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by the target date of 2015. These goals are (1) eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, (2) achieve universal primary education, (3) promote gender equality and empower women, (4) reduce child mortality rate and (5) improve maternal health, (6) combat diseases such as AIDS/HIV, (7) ensure environmental sustainability, and (8) develop a global partnership for development.
With the target date for the MDGs fast approaching, it has been observed that progress towards reaching the goals has been uneven, with many developing countries not quite on track to realize any. In developing countries, many national priorities in alleviating these development issues are hinged on the amount of aid it can attract from international development organizations. This practice of adopting an international schema for development glosses over the unique and specific development needs of developing countries.
With the theme “Defining Mindanao,” the 2010 Mindanao Conference on Issues in Development seeks to initiate an overview of development in Mindanao within the key areas of concern defined by the MDGs and, at the same time, interrogate these ideas by adopting an indigenous or insider’s perspective. Key themes for discussion in the conference are the following: the indigenous peoples (IPs), peace and conflict resolution, poverty, health and gender, education and its management, biodiversity and the environment, agribusiness and economics, and governance policies.
The conference also aims to (1) determine a common and emerging research agenda for Mindanao, (2) identify gaps on studies in development, (3) find new paradigms in confronting old problems, and (4) foster and enhance networking and collaboration of various stakeholders.
Encouraged by the success of the four-part series of regional conferences last year, focusing on the health and social sciences, educational management, agribusiness and economics, and biodiversity and the environment, the current conference aims to be more inclusive and bring together scholars from within and outside the country to discuss issues that confront Mindanao as a whole.

Here is a collection of published works I did all these years, from my writing, art works, to my photography. Most of them were featured in newspapers, magazines, brochures, coffee table books, flyers, websites, billboards and other promotional materials. Because I was known as a writer first, some of my articles featured photos of my partner and mentor Rhonson Ng. Eventually and through his support, I developed my own eye and have published my own photos as well. Sharing with you is like sharing some parts of myself that shaped me into the character I am today.

tj_brewed November 7th, 2010, 05:49 AM Kadayawan-like festival for Christmas (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/local-news/kadayawan-festival-christmas)
THE City Tourism and City Investment Promotions Office (CTCIPO) is thinking of a Christmas celebration to enliven the atmosphere and bring in revelers much like that of Kadayawan Festival.
Jason Magnaye of the CTCIPO, said residents and visitors alike can expect a colorful Christmas.
"Everyone who will visit and stroll around the city will be delighted with the unique decorations that the city has," Magnaye said.
Magnaye said they intend to make Davao a place to visit during the season to attract tourists from different parts of the country.
For this year, there will be night markets put up in key areas of the city, aside from barangay-based celebrations that will culminate in one grand activity at City Hall.
The traditional Pasko Fiesta celebration that erstwhile Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has set in place will remain.
The centerpiece this Christmas will be the Rizal and People's Park, he said.
"We will do this to show to the rest of the world how creative and hospitable Dabawenyos are," he added.
Magnaye said this effort of the local government of Davao will form part of the city's preparation to become a prime tourist destination not only in Mindanao but throughout the Philippines. (Jereco O.Paloma)

TAXI drivers play a vital role in the tourism growth of Davao City, the City Tourism and City Investment Promotions Office (CTCIPO) said.
Jason Magnaye, head of CTCIPO, said just like other key officials in the City Government, taxi drivers play an important role in the promotion of Davao's tourism industry.
Magnaye said taxi drivers are tourism frontliners who have the first-hand encounter with local and foreign tourists who would ask drivers about tourist destinations in the city, from coffee shops to hotels.
As part of community-based tourism, Magnaye said they plan to conduct training of taxi drivers on the proper handling of tourists, proper knowledge of different tourist spots and destinations in the city, and how taxi drivers can contribute to city's tourism growth.
"We have a lot of things in our city that we can offer out visitors, we just have to know what these are," Magnaye said, adding that the city has a big opportunity to shine in tourism industry.
"Davao's culture is richer than any other major cities in the country, so must develop these potentials in order to meet our visitors' expectations," he added. (JOP)

rodincouch November 7th, 2010, 09:08 AM Globe awards livelihood grants to KMBI top women microentrepreneurs (http://www.dailymirror.ph/Nov-2010/11062010/pep2.html)
Victorias City - Leading telecommunications company Globe Telecom awarded livelihood grants to three outstanding women microentrepeneurs of the Kabalikat para sa Maunlad na Buhay, Inc. (KMBI), an organization which provides sustainable microfinance, training, and demand-driven non-financial services to small businesses nationwide.
The awarding coincided with the KMBI Microentrepreneurs’ Summit (ME) 2010 held for the first time in Negros Occidental. Globe is a major sponsor of the event participated in by some 4,000 women microentre-preneurs from different parts of the province.
Chosen as recipients of P20,000 livelihood grants each from Globe as well as business coaching and consultancy assistance from KMBI are: Lydia E. Malot of Calinan, Davao City; Letecia Tabotabo of Dumanlas, Buhangin, Davao City; and Gina D. Abarca of Daet, Camarines Norte.
One of KMBI center presidents Lydia Malot is a nata de coco maker in the morning and a values teacher in Calinan National High School in the afternoon. Lydia started with 300 trays of nata de coco and had slowly grown her business. As of today, she has two regular and 13 contractual employees. The plant operates 3-5 times a week depending on the need of the market.
Lydia is not greedy in sharing her knowledge about nata de coco production. Two of Calinan manufacturers learned from her and now have bigger production than her due to the availability of financial resources. Five years from now, when she is done with her debt payments, Lydia plans to have a bigger plant to supply other food companies in Visayas and Mindanao.
On the other hand, Letecia L. Tabo-tabo is a nurse by profession and a KMBI center treasurer. She is also a money-lender, uniform and ID, rice and meat dealer/supplier, grocery middleman, candle supplier, and a co-owner of a manpower services company.
Letecia has 400 plus workers under their agency and will add more when she closes her agreement with Davao Bay Oil Mill. She currently supplies manpower to KF NutriFoods International Inc. Asia Pacific Oil Manufacturing Company, Garden by the Bay, and Garden Oases Resort and Restaurant. Letecia was also able to secure a license for another manpower services firm named Kenztar Manpower and Allied Services.
Meanwhile, another grantee, Gina D. Abarca started her juice drinks, fish and vinegar sauce business in 2007 and even established outlets for both wholesalers and retailers. Recently, Gina diversified her business by producing various nata de coco products such as nata de coco flavored juice drink. She also has plans to expand her business area. Gina was noted and observed to have sound business and decision-making skills which allowed her business to thrive in her community.
The competition for the livelihood grants was opened to all KMBI members all over the country. The criteria for the selection include the financial viability of the project (40%), community benefit (40%), and innovation (20%).
Last year, Globe Bridging Communities (Globe BridgeCom), the corporate social responsibility arm of Globe, introduced the livelihood grant through its Enterprise Development Program (EDP) to help sustain and expand community enterprises.
Like Globe, KMBI has been at the forefront of assisting microentrepre-neurs with its microfinance program. Since 1986, KMBI has been helping underprivileged Filipino women microentrepreneurs to have access to loans, insurance and capital build-up. From serving 37 clients, it now serves almost 250,000 women all over the country, mostly comprised of sari-sari store owners, small manufacturers, and people engaged in buy and sell business.

BY MAYA M. PADILLO
The sound of agong and kulintang marked the opening of this year’s Regional Tribal Panaghiusa Festival held at the Tribu K’ Mindanawan, located at the complex of Davao Crocodile Park, last October 22.
A number of indigenous children, in their multicolored outfits, gathered for the festivity that carried the theme “Dayaw, “ which expresses gratitude for all the initiatives undertaken for the betterment of the lives of the indigenous peoples.
The festival, which is conducted to showcase the IPs knowledge, systems, and practices, is in line with the Department of Education (DepEd) Region 11 Memorandum No. 346 recognizing October as the Indigenous People’s Month aiming to bring together IP children and out-of-school youths (OSYs) from the nine school divisions of the region.
Spearheaded by the Institute for Indigenous People’s Education (IIPE), the festival also aims to promote and cultivate deeper understanding of IPs cultural heritage both tangible and intangible for all sectors both local and international.
The affair also recognized the invaluable contributions of traditional artists and cultural masters to traditional knowledge preservations and dissemination.
It was a motivating event for the IP children and OSY who participated in various competitions such as vocal solo and composition, IP dance, IP musical instruments, quiz bee, chants, creative story telling, painting, and indigenized instructional materials (teacher category) as highlights of the said affair.
The affair was also graced by local personalities and officials that have common standpoints that is promoting the culture of the IPs.
The venue also added authenticity to the festivity since Tribu K’ Mindanawan is a cultural village, amid tall bamboo trees, with vernacular structures and showcases the richness of the IPs in Mindanao.
Cultural presentations every weekend highlighted with a very spectacular fireshow are being staged at Tribu K’ Mindanawan.
Welcoming the contingents was the president of Davao Crocodile Park, Philip “Sonny” Dizon, who is very vocal in his interest of promoting and supporting the culture of the IPs.
“People without culture and history have no soul and no pride,” Dizon said.
Various institutions and personalities have also supported the affair such as Marco Polo Davao, NCCC Mall Davao, City Government of Davao, Nanay Bebings Restaurant, Media Lab Advertising and Promotions, Funtronics Enterprises, Rotary Club of the East Davao, Coca-Cola Bottlers Philippines, Metrobank, Asia Brewery Corporation, Asiawide Refreshment Corporation, Pepsi Cola Bottlers Inc., and IP Division Coordinators.

mCx2 November 7th, 2010, 01:01 PM Statement on the Bt eggplant controversy
http://www.upmin.edu.ph/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=613:statement-on-the-bt-eggplant-controversy&catid=1&Itemid=19
I don't know why scaremongers are broadcasting doomsday effect as regards GM agricultural produce. All this time we have been having GM food as well as flowers. We've had varieties of rice because of genetic manipulation by our plant researchers for decades and our forebears before them.We now enjoy bigger peppers, tomatoes and other veges because of this, not to mention our varieties of flowers particularly Orchids. All of these thanks to Horticultural science and to be precise- Genetic Modification.

Kadayawan-like festival for Christmas
Magnaye said this effort of the local government of Davao will form part of the city's preparation to become a prime tourist destination
not only in Mindanao but throughout the Philippines.

http://davaocitynews.blogspot.com/2010/11/city-to-tap-cabbies-for-tourism-growth.html
"Davao's culture is richer than any other major cities in the country, so must develop these potentials in order to meet our visitors' expectations," he added
Exec vows to make Davao city next tourism destination
http://davaocitynews.blogspot.com/2010/11/exec-vows-to-make-davao-city-next.html
DAVAO as next top tourist destination in the country is feasible, an official of the City Tourism and City Investment Promotions Office (CTCIPO) said.
Jason Magnaye, chief of CTCIPO, told reporters in Wednesday's Club 888 forum that they will make Davao attractive to tourists as well as to locals.
"Before we could offer Davao to tourists from different parts of the Philippines, and the rest of the world, we should first set Davao as welcoming and appreciable to them," he said.
According to Magnaye, just like throwing parties, before catering to some guests, some preparations should be done just to have a welcoming atmosphere, so guests will feel as though they're in their own houses.
"If these tourists would have a remarkable experience in our city, they will most probably recommend to their friends that Davao is a great place to visit and they have a lot of things to do here," Magnaye said.
Magnaye said Davao has a lot of things to offer tourists, from the varied aspects of tourism to the city's radiant culture.
Davao, Magnaye said, has a wide selection of potential activities for tourists, from in-lands to highlands.
"Our city is incomparable to other key cities of the Philippines, especially in terms of tourism and tourist destination," he said.
Magnaye said that staying in Davao gives visitors a lot of opportunity to experience the different aspects of tourism.
From the mouthful of food delicacies that are unique in the city, it also offers the nightlife that has a touch of the Dabawenyos.

I think the Pinnacle has a contemporary touch whereas the RMH has a more classic architecture so it looks very elegant. I can't remember the lobby of the former Mercure(the Grand Regal).MP has a tight and somehow angled lobby-I prefer the Apo view lobby to it. Grand Men Seng has a very nice sweeping lobby, very visible from the street:)
tj_brewed November 7th, 2010, 08:45 PM State of the City Address of the Honorablen Sara Z. Duterte, City Mayor of Davao
(October 11, 2010, Davao City Hall)
Ladies and Gentlemen, Good Morning.
Thank you for gracing our invitation to hear a report about our beloved Davao. In my 4 years speaking before the public, this is yet to be my longest speech, with 9 pages at size 16 font, so please make yourselves comfortable for the next 20 minutes.
For the past four months, we were recognized by the National Literacy Coordinating Council as the Most Outstanding Local Government Unit in the Highly Urbanized City Category. In the Metropolitan Cities Category of the recent Philippine Cities Competitiveness Ranking Project study conducted by the Asian Institute of Management (AIM), we received four awards, including the prestigious Best in Quality of Life award. We also won awards in the Best Compliance with Government-Mandated Plans, Entrepreneurs' Award for Most Supportive to MSMEs, and a special award in Best in Documentation.
Davao City together with the private sector recently bagged two awards in the recently concluded 21st Philippine Travel Mart held in Manila. Awards won are the Best Booth in the Travel Fair City category and the Travel Fair People’s Choice overall champion.
We successfully celebrated our annual grand Kadawayan Festival with a strong participation from our private sector, and again during the recent 1st Asian Bird Fair and 6th Philippine Bird Festival. We shall all look forward to our Pahalipay sa Pasko sa Kadalanan, Pahalipay sa Pasko para sa mga Bata in Rizal Park and People’s Park, Pahalipay sa Pasko sa Barangay. For 2011, we have the Chinese New year, the Araw ng Dabaw, the Daba-Daba Summer Sports and Music Week and Kadayawan.
The Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT), together with the Business Processing Association of the Philippines (BPAP) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), awarded Davao City as the number one next wave city in the Top Ten Next Wave Cities 2010.
Our city ascended out of those turbulent times over two decades ago, mainly because the past administration has laid down a sturdy foundation for peace and security. It paved the way for Davao to rebuild a favorable environment for business and commerce to prosper. It even brought Davao many accolades from national and international bodies. We are now reaping the fruits of that legacy. And we shall continue to move forward and upward in unity.
The following are excerpts of what your local government has done for the 3rd quarter of 2010 and can do for the coming months:
We started with indentifying the different offices, divisions and units into 5 clusters to make way for effective management and administration. We have Public Administration: City Mayors Office, City Administrator’s Office, General Services Office, City Legal Office, Human Resources Management Office and the Sangguniang Panlungsod. Fiscal Management: City Treasurer’s Office, City Budget Office, City Accountant’s Office, City Assessor’s Office, Business Processing and Licensing Unit, City Planning and Development Office, City Economic Enterprise, Infrastructure: City Engineer’s Office and Davao Drainage and Canal Program, Social Services: City Social Services Development Office, City Health Office, City Civil Registrar’s Office, Integrated Gender and Development Division, City Library, Traffic Management Center, Central 911 and Davao Drug treatment and Rehabilitation Center, Economic and Planning: City Agriculture’s Office, City Veterinarian’s Office, City Cooperative Development Office, City Tourism Office and Davao City Investment Promotion Office.
Peace and Order is the backbone for all economies, thus we put a premium on these projects in our city. We have started the advocacy of a drug free workplace and conducted a drug testing project with 319 Task Force Davao personnel and 1162 Davao City Police Office personnel or 97% of our total law enforcement population. Of the 1481 that were initially tested, only 3 were submitted for confirmatory test and none of the 3 tested positive. The City hall plantilla employees are due for random testing and this shall be done before November 15 by the HRMO.
The DCPO submitted a third quarter report with the following crime statistics: Crimes against persons reported 308 with 80 cases filed, against property 1131 reported with 179 cases filed. For all crimes reported they have 24.26% solution efficiency. We have already submitted to the City Director an incentive project to increase solution efficiency which shall take effect on the final quarter of this year. On crime prevention, we shall tap our volunteers to assist our police, we have talked to PDEA to conduct seminars on our security personnel assigned in schools to become PDEA informants. We have budgeted for the PhilHealth contributions and honorarium of approximately 3,100 barangay tanods, they shall receive lectures on strengthening barangay operations for security this coming Wednesday and Thursday.
We have started with the rice subsidy for all identified police units with computed monthly allotments which are released weekly. Our policemen shall be allotted with meals when on duty. And their gasoline rationalization shall follow suit.
We provide generous support to the AFP through the TF Davao with 205 Special Cafgu Active Auxilliaries and their operational requirements.
Our DCPO and TF Davao shall ensure a decrease in crime incidence and an increase in crime resolution as well as a zero terrorism incident.
Our Traffic Management Center of 300 strong personnel, with our newly created eagle squads and 40 LTO deputized TOP issuing personnel shall ensure 24 hours traffic enforcement on our streets. Our driver’s education and I.D. issuance project shall be improved while we await our regulatory ordinance. Our Central 911 has 66.7% response rate and shall continue to improve their response time to save more lives. Our Disaster Risk Reduction, Management and Preparedness shall be tested and reviewed to make sure that we have efficient response in time of need.
Our City Social Services and Development Office has released approximately 15 Million pesos for families and individuals who suffered from human conflict crisis, manmade emergencies and natural disasters;
The Lingap Para sa Mahirap has benefitted over 16,000 people for medical and burial assistance from indigent families in the city with an average of 4,000 pesos per case of financial assistance released and we have disbursed approximately 6 million in medical and funeral assistance in our dengue express lane.
We have significantly controlled the number of dengue cases in the city with heightened awareness of the people and the involvement of the barangay officials to institute measures to combat dengue, we expect a surge of dengue cases in December as La Nina is expected to bring more rainfall. The barangays shall always endeavor to continually conduct the daily 4pm clean up drive, with the emphasis that it must be developed into a habit. Our malaria incidence is brought under control by our Tropical Diseases Team and another border operation in Barangays Malabog, Malamba, Salapawan, Gumitan, Tapak shall be made soonest.
We have already made the Paquibato Hospital operational as this will contribute to our preventive medicine goal and increase accessibility to immediate health care services for our residents there. Marilog Hospital shall be next to open as soon as water and electricity can be made available to the building. The Tibungco and Malabog Lying-in facilities will also help decongest childbirth admissions in SPMC. We will continue with our regular responsible parenthood lectures and birth spacing assistance as well as our summer circumcision project. A community-based databank of blood donors shall be created to ensure ample blood supply for regular demand and emergencies.
Our Chest Center is on deck for repair and equipment procurement, we shall partner with private institutions and source out national funding to contribute to this need.
We have started the compilation of required documents for PhilHeath accreditation for our centers to maximize the use of PhilHealth cards already issued and will be distributed for out-patient packages. Our City Health Office is raring to contribute significantly to the delivery of these social services for our less fortunate brothers and sisters.
Educational assistance was extended to 869 out-of-school youth, street and working children, children in conflict with the law, Moro and indigenous children, and those based in centers, including the 45 dependents of the victims in the 2003 bombings. Scholarship on Tertiary Education Program has 300 full scholars and 233 tuition scholars with varying courses. We will also continue to advocate education through the alternative learning system and community extension of schools with their Sunday School Program. We shall extend scholarship to Lumads and Muslims who can qualify for law school and medical school by June 2011.
Our Madrasah Program shall be supported so that our young Muslim children may continue to understand the true meaning of Islam. And our Special Education Fund shall primarily focus on building classrooms and giving assistance to public school teachers and students.
In giving emphasis to reading, we have trained our day care center teachers in beginning phonics and alphabet and we shall measure the reading skills of our Day Care Center children and ensure that they shall have developed their reading skills before they start with their basic education.
The Davao City Library and Information Center has serviced more than 16,000 clients who benefitted from the current book inventory, augmented by 178 book donations acquired by the Library. It has also brought its Book Mobile to serve 14 schools and gave orientation to 3,755 participants. It conducted the History Quiz 2010 Contest in August with the Davao Historical Society. We shall have 3 district libraries and wifi centers in the next 3 years.
When the barangays generated a big volume of solid waste from the “City-wide Clean-up Drive Against Dengue” last July, CENRO immediately created a task force responsible for its proper collection and disposal at the city’s disposal facility in Lacson. However, I expect the opening of the New Carmen Sanitary Landfill because the Lacson temporary dumpsite has now become a problem. CENRO is listening, I want to see the landfill functional before the year ends. I cannot wait for grassroots segregation to take-off, thus, I have ordered the negotiation of a private sector segregator facility before the residual waste may be deposited into the landfill. In addition, the Solid Waste Management Board will convene to plan for waste segregation.
What we have is land, in fact we have more than what other major cities in this archipelago can only dream of having. Therefore, we should develop and maximize our land’s potential to its fullest. We have identified agro-forestry to rehabilitate our upland and agriculture areas to increase productivity and contribute to the improvement of the agri-processing capability of our producers.
We have identified eco-tourism as our great asset, we currently rank 6th as a travel destination. The Mindanao situation will no longer be my excuse. Davao City is Mindanao’s premiere tourism hub.
I have ordered the preparation of our tourism industry, our grassroots based souvenir production centers, our pasalubong centers, our visitor centers, our volun-tourguides. It is time to embark on a tourism campaign that captures our great city’s muslim-christian-lumad peaceful coexistence and the wealth of our natural resources.
That time is now.
In the matter of governance, we are embarking on a Knowledge Management Project which will create the platform for all government transactions for online management.
To the City Engineer and the Acting City Planning and Development Coordinator, this is my challenge to you, find the solution to our flooding problem and housing issue.
You should start tagging all our residents needing decent housing and develop the existing resettlement sites, give our relocation sites access to water and electricity.
And most importantly, open all road networks to 2-wheel and 4-wheel vehicles.
We will submit to the Sangguniang Panlungsod before October 15, a budget which I would describe as fair. We have allotted 46% of the Development fund for Social Development because the first duty of government is individual security and family enhancement. Our economic development has a 16% allotment with emphasis on investment generation, agriculture and fisheries development, cooperative services and tourism enhancement. Our development administration has 25% of the budget with emphasis on addressing barangay development. Finally, infrastructure has 13% because we still have unimplemented projects carried over from the pump priming strategies of the past 3 years.
It has been more than a hundred days since your new administration has buckled down to work. The job was certainly not easy or simple; it was tough to make choices that can make everybody satisfied but in the end my job is to serve my city and focus on the duty of a chief executive. Your local government has been imposing utmost diligence and commitment, and for that I am optimistic and confident that we will continue to do our job well.
We believe in a people centered governance that anchors on individual accountability. Everyone is answerable for all that they are supposed to do, the mayor, the vice-mayor, the councilors, barangay captains, government employees, law enforcement agencies, firemen, engineers, doctors, nurses, street vendors, drivers, parents, school children. Everyone is responsible…do what is right, and do it well for love of country and for love of our Davao city.
A friend once told me that youthful idealism will kill your political career, if idealism is doing what is correct, then I do not want to grow old..
Daghang Salamat.

tj_brewed November 7th, 2010, 08:49 PM Campaign to promote Davao as BPO destination revitalized
A TOURISM office will intensify the campaign to promote Davao City as the next premiere business process outsourcing (BPO) destination in the country.
Jason Magnaye of the City Tourism and City Investment Promotions Office (CTCIPO) said making Davao as the next BPO destination in the Philippines is not impossible to achieve with the help of local government agencies.
He said, however, that they are facing a major challenge in promoting Davao because some foreign investors in the industry are still not aware about the potentials of the city. Others even say they haven't heard of Davao.
Other key cities of the country that have been promoted as key BPO destination are Manila, Cebu, Bacolod and Dumaguete.
"Naiiwanan na nga tayo ng ibang cities like Bacolod sa BPO (We are being left behind by some cities like Bacolod in the BPO industry)," he said
To address the problem, Magnaye said they will revitalize efforts to promote the city to possible investors.
According to him, Davao has a lot to offer to these investors, not just the basic things that a city could offer to businesses.
He said Davao has a good quality of living that is ideal for businesses and its workers.
This will be their main agenda in reconstructing Davao to create a better image to investors.
"Davao is unique in terms of different aspects, all we have to do is to develop this uniqueness" Magnaye said. (Jereco O. Paloma)

THE Davao Trade Expo (Date) has just ended and with it comes messages of what Davao really is: a rich agriculture region that is but a few thousand square kilometers big; big, but not big enough.
Over-all, Philippines has an estimated arable and permanent cropland of 10,050,000 hectares, which is 27th of 148 countries. It ranks fifth in banana exports with around 3.5-million metric tons (MT) a year. In the top four are India with 11-million MT, Brazil with 6.3-million MT, Ecuador with 5-million MT, and China with 4.8-million MT.
Click here for Election 2010 updates
In terms of arable and permanent cropland, India has 169,700,000 hectares, which is third of 148; Brazil has 65,200,000 hectares ranking sixth of 148; Ecuador has 3,001,000 hectares ranking 68th of 148; and China with 135,557,000 hectares ranking fourth of 148, according to nationmaster.com, which gets its statistics from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.
Looking at the figures, only Ecuador has less arable land than the Philippines. Granted, however, that there are other important crops as well aside from bananas, the Philippines can only produce so much. That is aside from the fact that there are 40-plus more countries producing and exporting bananas.
The recent ban by Iran on agricultural products of identified United States allies, that includes bananas from the Philippines, exposes a vulnerability of the market. But looking through the exhibits at Date, we can see how opting for high-value crops beget better market and stability. Like organic crops and low-chemical bananas.
Trading now should go beyond just grabbing the biggest chunk of the market. We are but a dot in the world, we can never have the vast landholdings other agriculture countries have. But we can always opt to get the premium market. For what will vast hectarage of bananas religiously aerial sprayed yield when the market like Iran says, we do not want your produce. Out there, however, the European market that's hungry for organic goods are waiting in line, willing to pay more.
Reading through reports on global agricultural trends, everyone is talking about organic farming, sustainable development, and soil conservation. While here we are, still trudging along in the age-old practices of high-chemical, monocrop agriculture and cash in on countries that are willing to buy anything anyway, like Iran. Isn't it about time that we heed the call for better agricultural practices? There is a high value market waiting to be served, and better conditions for the both the soil and the workers to gain. Why not, indeed?

(PIA-XI) [top]

by Mindanao Insider on Sunday, November 7, 2010 at 9:03pm
The long-awaited Davao Sports Hall of Fame will now be held at the Grand Men Seng Hotel grand ball room on December 7, according to the organizers headed by retired Judge Jimmy Quitain.
“Originally, we were planning to hold it at the Royal Mandaya Hotel but the hotel it is now having a major renovation,” Quitain said.
The event is already sponsored by Powerade, Coca-Cola Bottlers Phils., San Miguel Beer Corporation, Mrs. Nene Briliantes, Mr. Marco Te, Tesoro Printers and the city government of Davao.
“But we are waiting for the other sponsors to come in since we will be awarding at least 27 outstanding and deserving basketball players from Davao,” Quitain said.
The awardees are headed by Hall of Famers Loreto Carbonell and Francisco “Pacquing” Rabat, who both played for the RP national basketball teams in different international competitions.
Carbonell, a native of Malita, Davao del Sur, saw action for the RP team that won the gold medals in the 1958 Asian Games held in Tokyo, Japan and the 1960 first Asian Basketball Conference FIFA Asia champion held in Manila.
He also carried the national colors in the 1959 FIBA World Championships that finished 8th place in Chile.
The late Rabat, a former mayor of Mati, Davao Oriental, played for the RP team that placed second in the 1954 World Basketball Championships and the bronze medalist in the Rio de Janiera Brazil Championships.
Aside from Carbonell and Rabat, nine other outstanding players will be cited in the All-Time Basketball Greats. They are Valentino Rosabal, Alvin Teng, Roy Rubi, Rolando Magno, Joemer Rubi, Annie Mana-ay, Josephine Malinao, Gloria Tampus and Felisyl Alisondra.
Rosabal played for the University of Sto. Tomas and won the 1961 UAAP Rookie of the Year and 1963 UAAP Most Valuable Player. He also suited for Ysmael Team Pilipinas in the Goodwill Games held in 1964 in Tel Aviv, Israel, Sydney, Melbourne Australia and Korea and the 1964 National MCAA champion team.
Teng carried the national colors that won the gold medal in the 1985 Southeast Asian Games held in Brunei and the fourth-placer in the 1994 Asian Games in Hiroshima, Japan. He was also part of the San Miguel Beer team that emerged as the second PBA grand slam champion in 1996.
Roy Rubi, the eldest among the basketball siblings, played together with Magno for the Manila Team Philippines in the 1986 Inter-Cities League held in Jakarta, Indonesia, while his younger brother Joemer saw action for the RP squad that pocketed the gold in the 1993 SEAG in Chang Mai, Thailand and 1997 SEAG in Jakarta, Indonesia. Joemer also had a short stint in the PBA after a colorful career in the Philippine Basketball League.
Mana-ay and Malinao were teammates of the Region 11 team that won the gold in the 1984 Palarong Pambansa and later in the RP women’s national team that played in the 1984 Jones Cup in Taipei, 1985 SEAG Thailand, 1986 Asian Games in China and 1986 Hong Kong Goodwill Games.
Quitain said that 25 others, mostly former and active players of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) will also be given citations on Dec. 7.
They are Albert Guitierrez of Tanduay, Rafael Sison of Great Taste, Dave Supnet of Great Taste, Noli Banate of Great Taste, Dodong Postanes of San Miguel Beer, Dong Polistico of San Miguel Beer, Romeo Ang of Shell, Terry Albarillo of Ginebra, Dennis Carbonilla of Ginebra, Jack Tanuan of Purefoods, Dindo Pastor of Sta. Lucia, Cadel Mosqueda of Pepsi, Cesar Ijares of Crispa, Willy Tanduyan of Crispa, Joel Santos, Jay Ramirez of Shell, Aldo Perez of Ginebra, John Ferriols, RJ Rizada, Pong Escobal of Meralco, Peter June Simon of Purefoods, San Migue Eman, Sunday Salvacion of Red Bull and Felix “Donbel” Belano Jr.
Gutierrez and Sison were the first and second Dabawenyos to enter the PBA, respectively, while Belano, who played for the Davao Eagles in the Metropolitan Basketball Association before suiting up for Sta. Lucia Realty in the PBA and later with the Talk and Text, is the only professional basketball player to ever make a quadruple double in a single game.
“Sa MBA and PBA, wala pang nakakagawa sa record ni Donbel,” said Lito delos Reyes, president of the Sports Communicators Organization of the Phils. (SCOOP) Davao Chapter.

Likewise part of Ayala’s more active tourism play is the rollout of a boutique hotel chain under a new brand that would be publicly launched soon, Ysmael said. The chain seeks to bring to the market quality hotel rooms priced at $100 or below a night.
The executive said ALI had started building the new boutique hotels in key areas where the group has existing property.
Apart from the first 180-room boutique hotel in Fort Bonifacio that has started construction in front of One Serenda along 11th Avenue, Ysmael said ALI has identified three more sites in Quezon City, Alabang and Davao.
“Hopefully by the end of the year, we should have effectively started construction of all four. We’ve finished all planning,” Ysmael said, noting that the group was now seeking the necessary permits to start building the hotels.

DAVAO City Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is set to file an anti-discrimination ordinance that prohibits employers and schools from practicing intolerance in hiring workers and accepting students just because of race, color or religion.
The measure, once it is approved, will also prohibit the media from classifying religion of a crime suspect in reporting the news.
Duterte said the anti-discrimination measure is a law on people's right to be treated equally, and that people should be dealt with regardless of race, nationality, age and sexuality.
Duterte, in his regular local television program aired Sunday morning, said he will deliver a privilege speech in the City Council to emphasize the importance of the ordinance.
"I'm in the process of crafting an ordinance. We have to raise the level of quality of life," he said, adding he had initially discussed the proposal to the councilors.
The vice mayor said many businessmen in the city who practice intolerance in hiring workers will be hit by his measure, including some close friends whom he did not identify.
As to the media, Duterte said he often hears them referring to a crime suspect as "Muslim" which, he said, is discriminatory.
Some schools, according to Duterte, also have the tendency to refuse students if he or she is a Muslim.
"You should not do that," he said.
Duterte said the measure is patterned after the anti-discrimination laws in other countries like the US and France.
"I've always been for the human dignity," said Duterte, who plans to pass the ordinance in January. (Charles Raymond A. Maxey)

IMAX, huge screen...here in MOA, u can compare its screen to a 4 to 6 floor/storey building. Ganun ka lapad ang screen. It is so malapad! Imax can be either 3D or non 3D. Depende sa show na ipapalabas.
While a 3d cinema can be as big as an ordinary cinema, tapos may eyewear ka na susuotin then tanaaaaaaa! 3d na ang palabas. :D
That's why it is easier to have a 3d cinema than to have an IMAX cinema. To construct an IMAX cinema is more expensive than a 3d cinema.

Or IMAX is 70mm film (also a brand) and 3D is simply an illusion of depth perception. :D

Just a thought....Developments are not only seen, but can also be felt by the people in their bank accounts and wallets. :)
Some Dabawenyos may have been working away from the city, but that doesnt mean that those who were left behind are left hanging, some of my friends in the city are enjoying the city's developments not only through press releases but they do experience it - they personally dine out, enjoy the resorts, buy clothes, shop around, coffeeholics, bar hoppers, they spend coz developments translate to having money in their wallets. :)
right! :)

your question is too technical for me to answer haha but i'll try to differentiate the two based on experience in layman's terms..IMAX is like a giant projector and it's more immersive. the experience is like you're part of the content, environment, or the world, so to speak but please know that when you say IMAX, it's IMAX 3D..The usual 3D is just like looking at the world or looking through a window that is more visceral, detailed and visual.. :)

‘Nothing but positive comments’
By ROGER M. BALANZA
Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte on Sunday oozed with confidence Davao City is on its way to “fly high” with investors coming in droves to share in the economic boom.
Before, we were just like moving on the runway, but now it’s different. We are now on flight, he said in the vernacular at the television program Gikan Sa Masa Para sa Masa on ABS/CBN.
The vice mayor also expressed elation about his meeting with local businessmen and new investors who are all praise for the city’s economic strides.
I hear nothing but positive comments, he said in the program co-hosted by broadcaster Leo Villareal.
New investments in the city have been coming in floods, with the Davao City Investment Promotions Center (DCIP) reporting of P5.9 billion poured into mostly into housing development, malls and real estate in 2009. DCIP predicts the city’s growing reputation as an investors’ haven could snag another P3 billion in investments this year.
Vice Mayor Duterte, mayor for twenty years before daughter Mayor Sara Duterte took over City Hall after the May election, however prayed that the shaky peace and order in other parts of Mindanao would not spill over to the city.
Last week in the latest violence that regularly rocks nearby Central Mindanao, ten people were killed when a bomb ripped through a bus in North Cotabato.
There is unstable peace in Mindanao. We will just pray that the city is spared from the violence, he said.
With the city’s current attractive business atmosphere, Vice Mayor Duterte said the future of young people is assured. Everybody will have work three or five years from now, he said.
But he advised parents to prepare their children for work opportunities like call center agents.
Call centers are the most promising industry here. Parents this early should help train children how to speak good English, he said.

A P200 million artificial wave pool in Davao City is drawing big crowds and emerging as one of the city’s top attractions.
A first-ever in Mindanao, the wave pool opened middle of this year as one of the attractions Emars Hotel Restaurant and Beach Resort in Times Beach in Matina.
Built by LDL Realty, an affiliate of city-based skin care manufacturing giant RDL Pharmaceuticals, Inc., headed by Leonora Lim, the six-wave pool was carved out of a reclaimed area at the famous Times Beach, beside Queensland Hotel’s Bay Walk.
Emars, which sits on a one-hectare property, is one of the big projects here of Lim who is branching out to housing and property development, after installing RDL as one of the city’s top producer and exporter of a wide range of skin care products. LDL Realty is also behind the high-end Leonora Garden Heights in Cabantian, Buhangin, the company’s first foray into housing development.
Built for adults and children, the wave pool is now drawing 500 patrons a day, said Mercy Ototan, marketing manager of the 80-room resort hotel. Emars hopes to fill in future the city’s need for large facilities for gatherings with the 1,400-capacity convention building, she said.
Ototan said Emars offers new and unique experiences not found in downtown hotels where guests have nothing but the four walls of their room. She said Emars also offers a wide range of packages for weddings, baptismals and birthdays and other special occasions , including government and corporate gatherings.
Johnson Yap, Emars operations supervisor said LDL realty is planning to pump more into its initial investment of P500 million into the resort hotel, with an expansion program once it acquires adjoining reclaimed properties.
The pharmaceutical empire of Lim, started in 1994 as an astringent supplier, now produces export quality pharmaceutical, cosmetic and toiletries which are exported to countries like China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan and the Middle East.

the main difference between a 3d movie and imax for me is the lelvel of immersion with imax due to the sheer size of the screen. With Imax, its as if you are in the scene whereas in a 3d cinema, because of the smaller screen, its just like watching a movie with 3d effects..the borders around the screen to some extent reduces the immersion and like what you said, its like looking through a window
darn, we have almost the same message.. lets just put it this way, imax=big screen, no borders, more immersive..3d cinema = borders are an immersion breaker

As of now, Davao's artificial wave pool is the only functional wave pool in Mindanao. The wave pool in a resort-hotel complex in Zamboanga City is not anymore used, and perhaps the pool is even affected by the on-going demolition in the resort area which began a few days ago, again, to give way to a gated community.

Meron din silang wavepool. Very progressive ang Pagadian City at ang R-IX ang fastest growing economy in Mindanao. I hope that the media do better in making news about ZamPen as they are currently doing injustice to the people of ZamPen.

About 40 years ago, Phinma and Bacnotan Cement Industries, Inc. (BCII) envisioned expanding beyond cement manufacturing and becoming the country's major producer and supplier of construction materials. Its first step towards accomplishing this vision was to enter the business of steel roofing sheets. A steel plant was then established in San Fernando, La Union in 1963
As the market for roofing sheets continued to grow, the company set up steel plants in other regions: Davao City in 1968, Tabaco, Albay in 1986, and Calamba, Laguna in 1990.
In 1993, as the demand for pre-painted roofing sheets was also improving, the company established its first color-coating line in Calamba, Laguna. It was also in 1993 that the GI sheets business was spun off into Bacnotan Steel Corporation (BSC), a wholly owned subsidiary of BCII.
In 1996, the company installed a second color-coating line in Davao to meet the market demand for pre-painted roofing sheets in Southern Mindanao. In the same year, the Davao plant earned its ISO 9002 certification, the first in the Philippine GI Sheets industry. Subsequently the La Union plant was also ISO 9002 certified.
1997 was another milestone for the company. A modern Continuous Galvanizing Line was installed in Calamba to enable the company to be more competitive in terms of product quality and operational efficiency. The company's color line in Calamba was also upgraded to a continuous coil-by-coil operation to attain better quality color coated sheets and coils.
The company has been renamed UNION GALVASTEEL CORPORATION, which identifies its core business of galvanizing steel materials and brings it closer to its market-leading UNION brand of galvanized and pre-painted sheets.
Union Galvasteel Corporation has also adopted a new corporate identity logo. While its new name bolster the company's competitiveness in an increasingly competitive market, its new logo signifies its long-proven dynamism.
In line with its commitment to total quality and customer satisfaction, an ISO 9002 Certification was issued for the production lines of the Calamba, Laguna facilities including its Marketing Operations in June 2000.

Nope.
It's just a way of showing that a law implemented and strictly enforced without any prejudice can make any place a good community to live in even without highrises.
The Philippines is awash with laws and all LGUs are swamped with ordinances. The problem lies in the implementation and enforcement which is very typical in our country.

"This is an honor for all of us here in Davao City…Literacy now does not only focus on education, it also focus on social services." Mayor Sara Duterte said.
The mayor added that good result was achieved through the joint effort of the City Social Services and Development Office, City Mayor's Office, Vice Mayor's Office, City Planning and Development Office (CPDO), the City Health Office and all other social services department of the city.
The mayor was represented by CPDO acting head Roberto Alabado, receiving trophies from the Literacy Coordinating Council (LCC).
A cash prize of P100,000 was also given to the local government.
Alabado said the LCC weighed each contending city's social services based on the following:
* Up-to-date barangay mapping;
* Comprehensive City Development Plan and Structure that showed strategic means for the delivery of basic services to its people;
* Strong, committed and dynamic LGU leadership and management of programs that integrate literacy in all aspects of LG service;
* Institutionalization of literacy programs from early childhood (home-based) to senior citizens and even among diverse sectors to include indigenous peoples (IPs), special children, drug dependents, minors in conflict with the law, street children, prisoners, and agricultural workers which translates that awareness of programs and service is massive;

rodincouch November 8th, 2010, 04:00 PM Tropika: The 'green' hotel (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/business/tropika-green-hotel)
TRAVELERS seeking a cozy hotel in the northern side of the city can enjoy this new business hotel in Lanang area offering comfortable and stylish guestrooms equipped with great amenities.
Hotel Tropika, which opened on July 10 this year, has 30 deluxe rooms, friendly staff providing VIP hospitality, and practical environmental initiatives.
Max C. Lozano, president of Hotel Tropika, boasts of its uniqueness among the smaller hotels in Davao with its generous use of space, tropical garden setting, and color-coded floors, it is also the only hotel in city where you are comfortably seated when you check in.
“It is designed to be distinguished from other smaller hotels because of the 28-square meter rooms,” Lozano said adding that they hope to add 24 more rooms to its existing 30 guestrooms.
Located less than a kilometer to boat jetties, Hotel Tropika is the ideal jump-off to Samal Island, Davao's swimming and diving paradise. The hotel also offers tours to Samal and to other tourist destinations in the city. Away from the hassles of downtown traffic, Hotel Tropika is also an ideal jump-off point from Davao to key cities in northern Mindanao.
When you stay at Hotel Tropika, you will truly experience Asian hospitality at its best. You will experience the freshness of green, vitality of orange, and the warmth of yellow.
In addition to its 30 rooms, which have one king or two twin beds fitted with pampering linens over plush pillow-top mattresses, Hotel Tropika has meeting areas and Aseya Restaurant that serves Filipino, Thai, Japanese and Vietnamese cuisine, open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. A spacious al fresco area is available for a breathe of garden air and a view of a nearby hotel-owned establishment that houses a coffee shop, among others. A massage spa will be up soon for guests who need to indulge after a long business day. A full-service business center located at the hotel lobby supports guests 24 hours a day. Other amenities that will meet other important need for a comfortable and convenient say includes a wifi internet access, airport shuttle, room service, massage services, laundry service, car rental, travel and tour assistance.
Lozano said Tropika, which sits on a 1.2 hectare property, is likewise proud of its unique and pro-active environmental initiatives. Pro-environmental practices are the hotel's commitment to preserve natural resources. "We are aware of our environmental responsibilities and recognize the urgent need for new solutions to ensure a sustainable future for the next generation."
Tropika's ambiance is programmed to be "green", said Lozano adding that they are working for an accreditation to be a totally green hotel. Recently, he said, they secured a certification from the Davao City Water District for potable drinking water from the tap.
In eliminating the accumulation of waste, Lozano enjoins its guests to help in its environmental initiatives, as follows:
* Towel and linen reuse program
* Minimize use of plastic bottles for water by replacing plastic bottles with glass pitchers that can be refilled from mineral water dispensers located centrally on each hotel floor.
* Bulk shampoo. Shampoo is provided from a bulk dispenser rather than individual packages. This approach cuts down on packaging waste that ultimately ends up as garbage.
* Bathroom paper use-all policy. The hotel provides two toilet paper dispensers in all guestrooms toilets to ensure the availability of toilet paper at all times and allows a roll to run out and be replaced ahead of the other.
* Al Fresco restaurant option. The restaurant has the option to open its doors to become one with the open air terrace section.
* Use of only energy saving Compact Fluorescent Lamps
* Water conservation. The hotel conserve water by controlling water flow in toilets and urinals; controlled flow shower heads in guestrooms and sensor controlled faucets in public restrooms.
* Non-smoking rooms. Tropika aspires to be 100% smoke—free guestrooms. Smokers are generally booked on the ground floor for easy access to the outdoor smoking areas.
* Newspaper program. National and local newspapers are available at the lobby. The hotel feels that having newspapers delivered daily to each guestroom will eventually add to more waste paper to dispose of.
Since operations started four months ago, Lozano said Tropika has been enjoying a healthy occupancy rate and expects rate to go up. This, of course, depends largely on the market but the situation is improving all the time. Tropika is already seeing many repeat customers.
Indeed, Tropika’s business is to take care of its clients and the environment, all in a tropical garden setting truly and uniquely Asian. Located in Km. 7 on J.P. Laurel Avenue, it has easy access to taxi cabs, and public utility jeepneys. It is located in close proximity to major corporations, banks, schools and other institutions in the northern part of Davao City. Also nearby are many fine restaurants, shopping, and the soon-to-open Abreeza Mall.

DAVAO City Agriculture Office officer in charge Leonardo Avila III said P8 million is set to finance the department's plan for Sustainable Agro-Forestry for Rural Upland Communities.
The amount has been approved by the City Mayor and is currently pending for approval as part of the 2011 Annual Budget of the city, Avila said Monday in an interview.
"The P8 million is set for deliberation under the City Council. I would be defending it soon. This amount would be spent for high value crops, equipment, and technical training to prepare the barangay to take over the implementation of the program in their communities," Avila said.
Avila said the program Sustainable Agro-Forestry for Rural Upland Communities is in line with Mayor Duterte's plan for upland development.
"This is part of the City Government's efforts to maximize our potential. As we have said before that Davao City has a huge area fit for agriculture, most of these are in conflicted areas. The city government's plan is to involve the communities into developing their land by planting high value crops such as rice, abaca for their own gain," Avila said.
Avila said the program aims to improve the situation of poverty in conflict affected areas as well as conflict itself.
Avila in earlier interview said the City Agriculture is also currently studying the many varieties of upland rice.
"We have in one barangay pa lang, about 75 varieties of organic rice. We are planning to develop this and promote this as an original product of Davao which can compete in the international market eventually," Avila said. (Jade C. Zaldivar)

rodincouch November 8th, 2010, 04:05 PM New tech to monitor hotel room availability (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/local-news/new-tech-monitor-hotel-room-availability)
A NEW technology in databanking will help keep track of hotel room occupancy in Davao City and determine whether there are still enough rooms for visitors at a certain period.
Jason Magnaye, chief of the City Tourism and City Investment Promotions Office (CTCIPO), said the new innovation will help the city monitor the availability of hotel rooms.
Hotels are among the top-of-the-list considerations of tourist before coming to a certain destination, Magnaye added.
"We really have to think of ways that will bring out the best of Davao and give our visitors the total satisfaction," Magnaye said.
If tourists and some local visitors would have a hassle-free visit in the city, then it would create a good impression not only on Davao but to the entire country, he added.
"Offering the best we could give to the potential visitors of the city will bring more investment, more jobs and revenue to the city," he said. (JOP)

Parents this early should help train children how to speak good English, he said.

mCx2 November 8th, 2010, 05:04 PM Organic farming is the future and lest we forget it was also the way our ancestors did it. Even here in Davao, a number of people are exclusively consuming organic products. My sister and her family only eats brown rice. I am still not a fan of it though (brown rice). :)
But bear in mind that Organic Farming is labour intensive and very expensive to run especially if you go commercial. Can you imagine handpicking caterpillars in a hectare of cabbages. that's why they are very expensive to buy as compared to comercially farmed produce. If it's backyard gardening for home consumption then we go for it as we always do.:)

without batting an eyelash, i must agree for 10 reasons...
hindi super perfect ang ating traffic management or traffic condition pero at least in mindanao (have no idea about vismin area), it is the:
1. only city that fully implements the seatbelt law. pag davaeono ka, automatic na sa iyo na pagsakay mo sa sasakyan mo, seatbelt agad (not because huhulihin ka, but because nakasanayan mo na rin for your own safety). bihira ka makakita dito ng driver na hindi nag si seaatbelt at pasaway. at para naman sa mga visitors ng davao, pag dating nila ng toril or calinan or lasang, automatic yan sila nag se-seatbelt or they better have a super black tint hahahaha. P1,500.00 po multa dito pag nahuli ka.
kahit jeepney driver, seatbelt dito hehehe. only in davao.

2. only city that has wide roads and comrehensive road markings/street signs/traffic lights/cctvs/cat's eye, and of course chevrons courtesy of nogie hehe. while other cities, mostly 2 lanes lang road nila, dito sa atin, 4 lanes ang minimum width.
http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o265/sscnaxju/roads.jpg
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i292/naxju/not1.jpg
3. only city that fully implements the helmet and 2 passengers only (for motorcyles). subukan mong mag motor ng walang helmet or mag exceed ng passenger at ng matikman mo ang bumunot ng lisenya.
4. only city na merong centralized traffic management center (monitored remotely thru cctvs).
http://img696.imageshack.us/img696/7059/cctv5n.jpg
http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/6391/cctvp.jpg
5. only city na comprehensive ang concreting ng sidewalk at drainage. tingnan mo sa other cities, kahit nasa downtown area nila ang concrete ay ang road lang, ang sidewalk lupa na. dito, as far as lanang/matina may concrete sidewalk. at sa downtown area, shaded sidewalk talaga. at dahil dyan, bihira mo makikita na sa vehicla lane naglalakad mga tao, pwera sa mga pasaway.

6. only city na hindi allowed ang public trikes sa downtown roads. excemption to the rule... cabaguio/r castillo sts/madapo roads, yung mga papuntang looban. in short, 99.9 percent of major davao roads are free of trikes. of course, villages and subdivisions, allowed sila kasi tamad ang pinoy maglakad eh, kahit 200 meters lang magbabayad talaga para di lang makalakad.

8. of course, only city na mayroong 24 hour metro aides na nagmi maintain ng cleanliness ng roads, kaya palaging panalo sa pagiging malinis na syudad.
http://tagadavao.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/kadayawan-09-others-6.jpg
9. only city na may flyovers at underpass to make life easier for motorists passing key intersections.
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f142/kododoy/flyovers.jpg
10. and last but definitely not the least... only city na hindi ka mamomroblema during traffic accidents, dahil alam mong mayroong central 911 (interconnected w/ the traffic management center) na tutulong sa iyo kahit anong aberya sa daan FOR FREE in 5 minutes downtown area, 10 minutes suburbs and 20-30 minutes outskirts.

KaTRIBU November 9th, 2010, 01:33 AM Business group backs Aboitiz Power’s proposal to build coal plant in Davao
DAVAO CITY -- Aboitiz Power Corp.’s plan to build a 200-megawatt coal-fired power plant in this city has received support from the business sector.
Vicente T. Lao, chairman of the Mindanao Business Council and the Mindanao Power Electricity Alliance, said that while older coal-fired power plants are harmful to the environment, modern technology has reduced this problem.
Mr. Lao said building new power plants was necessary for the island considering additional power of about 500 megawatts would be needed by 2015. The demand, he explained, might even increase in case the mining industry starts to take off.
Based on information from the Chamber of Mines, the mining industry’s power demand in Mindanao could go to as high as 1,000 megawatts in five years.
The Mindanao power requirement, Mr. Lao said, is growing at about 5% annually with present demand at 1,500 megawatts.
The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines’ Web site, however, placed the island’s demand at roughly 1,200 megawatts while supply was at over 1,300 megawatts.
“The moment we have enough power, we can aggressively promote Mindanao [as investment area],” said Mr. Lao. The main issue is how to address the power problem, he said.
Earlier, Mayor Sara Z. Duterte-Carpio said her office was reluctant to support the Aboitiz project because of environmental concerns.
The city mayor said the company needed to convince her that the advantages of setting up such plant far outweighed the disadvantages.
Erramon I. Aboitiz, president and chief executive officer of Aboitiz Power Corp., said he would present the plan to the mayor to convince her that concerns would be addressed and that measures would be implemented to mitigate the impact of the plant on the environment.
Mr. Aboitiz added that because of the urgency of the need for power in Mindanao, the company was even willing to spend $400 million for setting up the plant even if there was no guarantee the power it would generate would have a buyer.
This is unlikely, however, considering Davao Light and Power Co., the island’s largest power utility, is also part of the Aboitiz Group.
To mitigate the impact of the power plant on the environment, Mr. Aboitiz said the company would set up a “circulating fluidized-bed technology” to reduce emissions. With modern technology, fuel efficiency is improved and operation is cleaner unlike coal-fired plants built decades ago, he said. -- C. Q. Francisco
