A new one on the block
By Stella A. Estremera
Goin' Places
THE shop that once rented out videos is now a coffee shop. Yup, that stall just by the entrance of Victoria Plaza gate 1 (McDonald's side) is already a coffee shop and that's where Dengdeng and I headed Tuesday night.
The place is called Coffee Life and has a pretty cool ambience, preppy.
Deng and I chose the window seats. Around us were a considerable number of people. Chiong Kee right by the door with another man, a group of young women on another table further in, a young couple doing the smoochies at the table by the window right outside the bathroom door, a group of five beside our table, and a group of four in the smoking room.
Surprises of all surprises, my food of choice from the menu was available (for those who are not so familiar with this "goin' placer," this lady almost always has the misfortune of ordering something in the menu that's out of stock or something, a bad thing for the place owners anyway because this lady's reason for trying every place in this part of the world is to write about it). But, having had that misfortune for almost a decade now, I should have known that it was too good for comfort...
We first had nachos (more like softened soda crackers with ground beef and cheese) to go with our tea (they have lots of tea, that's one thing nice about the place.
Then we decided to each have pasta. But since Deng and I couldn't decide what to get, we instead opted to order the two pasta dishes there: carbonara and bolognese. We'll just share.
The pastas? Errrr... I cook and am lucky to have the ability of being able to concoct a dish just by tasting it, so don't take it against me.
Couple Razel and Beling soon joined us. They ordered tuna and cheese and they got... tuna and cheese.
The tea is good though, and the long list worth a venture. And there was no hitch in our orders. The attendants brought in what we ordered.
Although the two attendants -- a waiter and a waitress -- were apparently kept on their feet and rushing because the place soon filled up, they were always profuse with their apologies for any delay.
And then the tempo of scurrying attendants sped up and apologies were coming faster as well... Outside, a couple of red twirling lights on a vehicle was blinking at us. Uh-oh...
What happened? Go ask Baden.
Who is Baden? He's a friend who was among those in the smoking area. All around us, people were still minding their own business, sipping tea, chomping on their food...

Bagani August 20th, 2006, 01:07 PM yip......i agree w/ you VAL ... need those "cobwebs" hidden underground !
Putting utilities (power and communications) underground is the best way to do it. It's clean and organized, easy to access and maintain, and cost effective in the long run. However, it has its disadvantages in a tropical country like ours. Most of the time utility lines are submerged in water because of storm runoff. It causes disruption of services. It then becomes costly for companies when they install automatic dewatering pumps in all their "flood" prone lines. But, an overhead system could likewise be organized to lessen visual pollution. One way is to confine lines on roadsides and require service companies to bind their cables neatly (Manila is doing it with DOT-NCR).
Pero kung may pera talaga, utility lines in city centers, like Davao City's poblacion, should be best underground. At present, nasa center island man o sa sidewalk, they are eyesores.

M-E-S-S-Y street, what are the locals thinking when they put those poles on the center island then fill it up with cobwebs? it should have been 'neater" if it was put on the side.... not on the center island for goodness' sake! im sorry but it looks dirty.
even if having them on the side, same results. i'd rather have them underground. then you have neater streets.

tj_brewed August 20th, 2006, 01:59 PM Moro-owned mall opens in Davao on Kadayawan
Written by Gandhi C. Kinjiyo/MindaNews

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/19 August) – A Moro businessman coincided the opening of his two-storey mall here with the holding of the annual Kadayawan Festival.
Fahad Zacaria, a Maranao born in Barangay Lakitan, Madamba town in Lanao del Sur province, named his 1,680 square meter business establishment "Lakitan Mall" in honor of his home place.
"Ang ibig sabihin ng Lakitan ay 'laging dinadayo' (Lakitan means 'frequently visited')," Zacaria explained, hoping that shoppers would regularly visit his business site located along San Pedro street, in front of the regional office of the Bureau of Internal Revenue.
Mall administrator Jimmy Duyag said a convenience store would be put up inside the mall soon."A businessman has also expressed his intention to put up a Jollibee branch here," he revealed.
"A food court will be placed in the second floor," he added.
In a Kanduli, a thanksgiving celebration which is the Maranao’s traditional way of opening business, Myrna Dalodo-Ortiz, who represented Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, congratulated Zacaria.
"Our city mayor, Rodrigo Duterte, welcomes this development. I also encourage other Muslim brothers to engage in business here,'' she sai
A number of Maranaos and Maguindanaos mostly engaged in selling novelties, malongs and other fabrics have been staying in Davao for decades already.
Ortiz estimates that some 140,000 Moro have been coexisting with Lumads and settlers in the city. "Moro tribes comprise at least ten per cent of the Davao population," she said.
The lone Muslim councilor, Amilbangsa T. Manding, president of the Association of Barangay Captains, said he was glad Manding put up a business here. :)

Why do other tropical countries (out neighbors in fact) have very neat and clean city centers (with underground cables)? Even in the Philippines, the Ayalas are able to do it in their projects? There is no excuse, na kesyo nasa tropics tayo, na madaling bahain ang underground, etc. It's just a matter of doing it well and maintaining it well.

Gaisanos vow to back investments in Davao
By Antonio M. Ajero
A GAISANO group will continue supporting their business ventures in Davao City, said Henry S. Gaisano II of Dynasty Management and Development Corporation during the eighth anniversary celebration of Grand Regal Hotel which houses the Casino Filipino Davao of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor).
Dynasty, which is identified with the brothers Benito and Eddie S. Gaisano, owns Grand Regal and Gaisano South Mall along Ilustre St
"Our group will continue supporting our investments in Davao even to the point of subsidizing them if need be at certain times," said Hen-hen who was the guest speaker of the celebration.
The young Gaisano, who is the eldest son of Eddie and namesake of his late grandfather Henry, thanked employees of Grand Regal for making it one of the finest hotels in Davao.
Regal enjoys an average occupancy rate of more than 50%, while its functions rooms are almost always fully booked, according to Ilde Bontia, its general manager.
The celebration was attended by Eddie, who stayed in the background, saying managing the group's ventures, including some 20 big and medium sized malls in the Visayas and Mindanao, is now gradually placed in the hands of younger Gaisanos like Hen-hen.
This is true with the seven other separate groups composed of the Gaisano cousins.
Benito, brother of Eddie, was the head of the Gaisano cousins who first ventured in Davao City in the early seventies with a department store along C.M. Recto Avenue. From Recto ave, other Gaisano malls sprouted -- in front of the University of Mindanao along Bonifacio and Bolton streets, and on Ilustre Street in Davao City; in Tagum, Davao del Norte; Digos, Davao del Sur; and General Santos City.
By then the cousins had become three groups -- the other two being the brothers Paul, James, Francis, Peter and Joseph on one hand and John Jr. and Hans on the other.
A similar metamorphosis also unfolded in the Visayas, chiefly in Cebu, and other parts of Mindanao, particularly in the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Valencia.

Thousands flock to streets for floral float parade
By Barbara Carla R. Quiero
THOUSANDS of Dabawenyos, including foreign and local tourists, flocked Sunday to Davao City's major thoroughfares, not minding the heat of the sun, to witness the Kadayawan sa Dabaw culminating activity -- the colorful 2006 Halad-Floral Float Parade.
The parade started at 7 a.m. at Magsaysay Park, passing through Magasaysay, C.M. Recto, Bonifacio, Claveria and San Pedro streets.
Those who waited on the streets were just impressed by the design of florally dressed floats of various shapes and sizes, saying the event is getting better every year.
The New City Commercial Corporation (NCCC) matched last year's feast as best float.
Ispired by the theme of the 21st Kadayawan celebrations, "Nagkahiusang Katilingban Bisan Asa sa Kalibutan (One People Anywhere in the World)", NCCC, a three-time floral float winner presented a float, which shows children and adults of various nationalities and clad in their national costumes, clasped hand in hand, with the globe providing the backdrop.
The tableau is set before rows of emerging flower buds, consisting of various mums, assorted anthuriums, and orchids.
The float is decked with durian, pomelos, pineapples, mangoes, santol, bananas, coconuts and more fruits from the Davao region depicting nature's bounty.
Roselyn Gesta, who came from Panabo City just to witness Sunday's float parade, said this year's participating floats are remarkably-designed ac compared to last year's entries.
"Amid threats of violence, I still watched the parade. This year's floats have better design," Gesta said in an interview Sunday.
Jobil Tayaw, 38 years old, said this year's parade showcased more varieties of flowers as compared to last year.
Ali Japuno, a photographer, who stops once in a while from taking pictures to see the passing floats said this year's float parade is more lively and colorful.
"There are more participants this year and more celebrities joining the parade," Japuno said.

scandinavian girl August 20th, 2006, 09:59 PM Phase I of Mindanao Trust Fund Launched
Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Sweden & World Bank Seek To Accelerate Social And Economic Benefits From Peace In Mindanao
/noticias.info/ COTABATOCITY, March 27 2006 – Phase I of the World Bank-administered Mindanao Trust Fund-Reconstruction and Development Program (MTF-RDP) was launched today in Cotabato. His Excellency Anthony Hely, Ambassador of Australia, His Excellency Peter Sutherland, Ambassador of Canada, and Ms. Patrice Tan, Manager of New Zealand AID signed today the Administrative Agreements for contributions to Phase 1. In addition, Sweden and the World Bank are contributing to Phase I of the program. The MTF-RDP aims to promote inclusive and effective governance processes, and to assist economic and social recovery in the conflict-affected areas of Mindanao.
The grants will be used to help build the capacity of the Bangsamoro Development Agency (BDA), local government units and other service provider agencies, pilot test a few projects, and establish the organizational set-up for implementation of sub-projects in conflict-affected areas of Mindanao. This initial funding will pave the way for the implementation of Phase 2 of the MTF-RDP. Once a formal peace agreement is signed between the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP), Phase 2 of the MTF-RDP will kick in and should proceed to smooth and fast implementation of sub-projects in conflict-affected areas, provide technical assistance, and gradually transfer full program management responsibility to a Bangsamoro entity. Several additional international partners are expected to contribute to Phase 2 of the program.
World Bank Philippines Country Director, Joachim von Amsberg, expressed his hopes for Mindanao, and how this initial phase could unlock more international support. He said, “Total funding for Phase 1 of the MTF is more than US$2.7 Million. Such funding is significant and strategic but small compared to the overall needs. However, capacity building in Phase I will unlock international support in Phase 2 of around US$50 million or more. That program in turn can unleash the even greater social and economic benefits that Mindanao can experience through lasting peace. Mindanao has great potential for rapid development if different groups can begin to trust each other, find agreements, and, together, focus on the development of Mindanao, especially those areas that have been affected by the armed conflict.”
In Mindanao, more than three decades of intermittent conflict have resulted in destruction of infrastructure, population displacements, deferred development, and lack of trust among people at the local level and between these and government authorities. With prospects for peace between the MILF and the GRP significantly improving, a World Bank-administered multi-donor Mindanao Trust Fund (MTF) that would support post-conflict reconstruction and development, was established. The Trust Fund pools the resources of several international partners in a simple program and thus harmonizes and simplifies support to Mindanao that might otherwise be fragmented in several smaller programs.
Witnessing the signing ceremony besides Mr. von Amsberg, were Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Secretary Jesus Dureza, International Monitoring Team Major General Dato Pahlawan Soheimi, and representatives of the MILF Central Committee. “The Mindanao Trust Fund brings to fore the strategic importance of forging a common front in laying the ground for the mechanisms for rehabilitation and development, ahead of the final peace agreement,” Secretary Dureza said. “This is precisely the direction the President wants the peace process to move forward, pursuing political settlement to end conflict through peace negotiations, while simultaneously addressing development imperatives in conflict-affected areas,” he added.
The MTF will provide short and medium-term grant funding to Mindanao. A multi-donor joint needs assessment (JNA) has been undertaken, the findings and recommendations of which will guide the program. The MTF is not expected to be a substitute for on-going or planned bilateral or multilateral programs for Mindanao. However, by focusing this fund on conflict-affected communities, initial resources will be focused on the worst-off areas and accelerate the arrival of social and economic benefits that can result from lasting peace.
The Office of the President for Peace Process and the Mindanao Economic Development Council (MEDCo) are the key government counterparts for MTF-RDP. The local counterparts are the BDA and the ARMM Regional Government.

tj_brewed August 21st, 2006, 02:07 AM Moro-owned mall opens in Davao on Kadayawan
(Gandhi C. Kinjiyo/MindaNews)

tj_brewed August 21st, 2006, 02:36 AM Thousands flock to streets for floral float parade
Sunstar Online
August 21, 2006
:)
Presenting this year's floral float parade winner:

PeopleSupport will occupy this newly constructed two storey commercial complex by the third quarter of the year. I've checked it inside and furnishings na lang ang kulang.
For now, its temporary office is at A 301 Plaza de Luisa Building Ramon Magsaysay Avenue (part of Davao's Chinatown).
The guard on duty mentioned na HSBC will have its site daw sa tabi nito. I wonder if this is the HSBC Bank or its call center operation. If this would be its callcenter, then the Jacinto Ext would evolve into an IT Strip. There is also an IT firm along Jacinto which is into software designs and robotics.

Ady001 August 21st, 2006, 04:11 AM Hi Ady001 :)
I really like, really, yea really like Jakob Sveistrup a danish singer.."Talking to you".....ummmmm that song makes me melt like ice creame in hot sunshine sigh*.....I do not know the singer who sings "Unge Dag" sound like it is either Norweigan or danish..Jessica Folcker ...No, I do not know her ...danish? Nanne is a swedish singer ...but it is Jakob that I apreciate the most...:):)
Nice day to you Ady!
I thought Jessica Folcker was Swedish. I listened to a song of hers, the title of her album was Pa Svenska, so I can't be wrong for her being Swedish.
Yes, I also enjoyed Jakob Sveistrup. His "Talking To You/Taender Pa Dig" is a real classic, and I saw his Music Video (and saved some Danish live performances of his.)
BTW, Unge Dag was sang by Gitte Haening.
Another question, do you know Oystein Sevag?
enough of my queries... :bash: :bash:

Acaylar's position now open: agency
By Barbara Carla R. Quiero
Personally, this is a very welcome news. Kadayawan could be efficiently organized, directed and managed by the Foundation and the private sector. The Tourism Council should only be there to assist and to liaise between City Hall and the organizing committtee. Id's work is, I think, purely events organizing, GRO and receptionist for the City. It's NOT tourism in broader sense. Alam ba nya to plan for tourism? For tourism infra like scouring the City for potential sites and not seeing the old list that you see year by year in Davao's web pages? Plan for tourism investments? For tourism marketing and promotion? To coordinate and work harmoniously with other agencies of the City and the government? Kung hindi, he has no right being there in the first place. Then the Mayor is right in removing him from his post.
I think that before you can be a production director, you have to consider "pleasing a lot of people." I'm not sure if DDS really made something in his schedule. He juggles his time kasi making that program while doing the production for Hiyas.
Ady001 August 21st, 2006, 04:17 AM ^^ what i'd like to see is a visionary and not just a creative person with good management skills. while the private sector should be commended with the efforts of promoting davao, i still have to see a comprehensive direction from the public sector. i have said it before, i'd like to see a consistent and corporate approach to it. "branding" baga, there is nothing so far i've seen. probably a little here or a little there. there has to be a corporate image, sure we have an eagle or a walingwaling or a durian or a mt apo being used as symbols. but it should not stop at that. thing is, davao is more than this or that symbol. we're trying to put in so many things as a symbol.
i'd like the city government talk with an ad agency, get some inputs, concretize those inputs. what is the strategic campaign here? davao is the brand, but we're like talking of trying to promote so many remedies and so many cough and colds products. create a visual identity to go with the brand not identities.
Yes, ads are also important because they can entice people to buy things. Ads are extremely important in this generation.
Paul, I've heard tarpaulins and billboards are so passe there in N.A.?

UP Mindanao econ grad is this year's 'Hiyas'
By Barbara Carla R. Quiero
A 23-YEAR-old BS Economics graduate of the University of the Philippines is this year's "Hiyas ng Kadayawan."
Kristine Grace Maambong was crowned during the search's grand finals and coronation night at SM Entertainment Plaza Wednesday.
Maambong advises girls who want to join the Hiyas sa Kadayawan to have a desire to improve, persevere to succeed, and just "be yourself."
She went home P50,000 richer and is now city's ambassadress of goodwill who will promote not only the city, but the whole of Mindanao.
The 5'8" Dabawenya, who prefers to be called Kitten, bested eight other finalists who competed for the coveted crown.
She was crowned by City Legal Officer Melchor V. Quitain and Susan Antipuesto, the new Hiyas sa Kadayawan 2006 Committee chairperson.
"All my life I've been wanting to be a greater influence to others and I think I've achieved that tonight," Maambong said.
As the newly crowned Hiyas, Maambong said her advocacy is empowering the youth -- being the leaders of the next generation.
Nancy Blanco, who is from Zamboanga City, won the Hiyas ng Samsung award. She received a 21-inch colored television set.
Eleonor Albaladejo, a professional model who has already modeled all over Asia, won the Ms. Allure title.
The three male finalists who were subsequently dropped from the competition still modeled for their designers.
The floral bouquet made by Elizabeth Gonzales, the grand winner of the Urog Etnika Floral Bouquet contest, was modeled by Christian George Morales.
The panel of judges included Angie Corro of the Manila Bulletin, Gerald Duremdes of Samsung, Linnie Palacio of the Waterfront Insular Hotel, Neil Oropesa of Oroderm, Eusebio Avanceña of USAid, lawyer Rolly Dumalag of the Kadayawan Foundation and former Ms. Universe Margie Moran-Floirendo.
Now, UP Mindanao has somthing to be proven of!

scandinavian girl August 21st, 2006, 08:27 AM I thought Jessica Folcker was Swedish.
Ady001 Good Morning from Sweden You are probably so right about Jessica, only I do not know about her at all, Gitte Henning is danish, Oysten Sevag a pianist...danish or norweigan, I know for sure he is not swedish? I like him..there is another singer Tomas Ledin, he is older in his 40:ies( sorry guys around 40 you are not old...just older then me. :). I like his songs. Darin a pop singer he has a soft voice and makes swedish girls :dizzy: haha..his texts are rather superficial but he is nice to listen to cause of his soft and soothing voice. Another singer I like alot is Nane not Nanne ( there are two Nane´s one with one n and one with two nn in the name) Nane is great she is nice to listen to..maybe her you refered to in a previous note to me..not the two nn nanne?
Can you recommend music form you country to me! I am very fond of soft pop/jazz/soul music.
Have nice music experiences Ady :)

Paul, I've heard tarpaulins and billboards are so passe there in N.A.?
a lot of outdoors are like big displays or monitors. pero naa pa gihapon mga printed ones (paper pasted on boards) for economic reasons. i have never seen tarpaulins. i have been designining outdoors and i get to deal with one big company - cbs outdoor (related to this cbs media giant i guess). there's another pattison. these the 2 big ones here in toronto. the printed outdoors are the most popular ones still.

junex August 22nd, 2006, 03:24 AM Good morning Davao...congrats for the sucessful kadayawan celebration....
In the news:
Kadayawan filled hotels to the brims
By Barbara Carla R. Quiero
HOTELS in Davao City enjoyed high occupancy rate this month with the weeklong celebration of the 2006 Kadayawan sa Dabaw.
Marie Dino, front office staff at the Grand Men Seng Hotel, said they have 100 percent occupancy rate almost everyday with conventions and live-in seminars booked in time for the Kadayawan.
Dino said there were times when they had to turn down walk-in reservations.
Conventions that brought full-occupancy in all of their 70 rooms included the Mindanao Councilor's League Conference and the Department of Interior and Local Governance seminar.
She said 10 percent of their guests are foreign tourists and the rest are locals.
"Most of them are Japanese and Europeans. They arrived in the city for the Kadayawan and they also have relatives here," Dino said.
She said on regular months, the hotel posted only 70 to 80 percent occupancy rate.
For his part, Barry Sollano of the Waterfront Insular Hotel said that on regular months, they have an average of 60 percent occupancy rate.
But, this reached 90 to 95 percent as Kadayawan neared and last August 10 and 18, Sollano said, they had a 100 percent occupancy rate.
The hotel is still brimming the day after Kadayawan at 90 percent occupancy rate.
Sollano said that 20 to 25 percent of their tourists are coming from Asia such as Japanese and Koreans.
"Even if there are still remaining days of the month, we have almost achieved our room occupancy target of the month," Sollano said.
Davao Convention and Visitors Cooperative Bureau vice chair Art Boncato said the month of August has become the peak month for travel and tourism in the city because a lot of people are coming to witness the Kadayawan celebration.
"They know that they can get a premium because of the Kadayawan so a lot of groups, organizations would want to plan their meetings and events during the weeklong festival," Boncato said in a separate interview.
According to Boncato, there are 2,900 hotel rooms in the city. During the festival, these hotels enjoy a 90 to 100 percent occupancy.
Certification standards okayed to penetrate $150B halal market
GENERAL SANTOS CITY -- Religious leaders and other stakeholders in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) have finally approved the halal certification standards that will be observed in the region as it strives to penetrate the $150 billion global market for halal products.
Ustadz Mohammad Inju, chairman of the Halal Certification Board, said they will start operations by September after they approved the guidelines several weeks ago.
"The guidelines were approved by muftis (Muslim religious leaders) and Muslim food scientists, chemists, medical doctors," he said.
Lawyer Ishak Mastura, secretary of the Armm-Department of Trade and Industry, urged the country's poultry exporters to employ the services of the certification board to access the multi-billion dollar international halal industry.
"We are happy that the halal certification board was finally organized. We believed that board is the most credible halal certification scheme in the country since majority of the Muslim resides in the Armm and the muftis in the Armm are the most influential and most respected Muslim religious leaders in the country," Mastura said.
He noted that the guidelines will be tested in the Middle East as the regional government is close to forging a deal to export poultry products in Iran.
Halal certification is the system of determining what is permissible for consumption of Muslims under Shari'ah or Islamic Law.
By food safety standards, halal is considered a quality control system by itself that puts emphasis on critical control points involving hygienic and disease-free preparation of foods from farm to plate.
Halal seal marked on labels of food and non-food products will inform Muslim consumers that the product is free from any Haram or pork, lard from swine and alcohol.
Haram, which is the opposite of halal, are foods that are forbidden for consumption of Muslims.

tj_brewed August 22nd, 2006, 05:41 AM G Mall of Davao looks sad and so is Victoria Plaza...
I agree......I wish their managements can further improve 'em.
I hope u can also visit Chimes Mall...It's a strip mall / specialty store located within Chinatown which caters to the high end market. It's quite new....

It's Davao's version of Rustan (considering the market it caters and the expensive brands that can be found in Chimes).

Bagani August 22nd, 2006, 06:04 AM Why do other tropical countries (out neighbors in fact) have very neat and clean city centers (with underground cables)? Even in the Philippines, the Ayalas are able to do it in their projects? There is no excuse, na kesyo nasa tropics tayo, na madaling bahain ang underground, etc. It's just a matter of doing it well and maintaining it well.
EXACTAMENTO! May tama ka dyan, Pards. Basta may pera lang, no prob, especially private sector development. But no pera is always the best excuse for government. But I use to work for the government and all power and communication lines of our projects are underground. It's a matter of political will.

Ady001 August 22nd, 2006, 06:24 AM Ady001 Good Morning from Sweden You are probably so right about Jessica, only I do not know about her at all, Gitte Henning is danish, Oysten Sevag a pianist...danish or norweigan, I know for sure he is not swedish?
Soft Pop and Jazz in our country is currently doing revival through Bossa Nova, but they're currently centered in Metro Manila. Sitti is currently on the tops of reviving this kind of music. By the way, you can listen to JAzz from the Philippines through streaming radio. The main Jazz station in the Philippines is Crossover.
Soul, nah, not quite. RnB and Top 40 Hits currently rule the dominant, posh English only Top 40 radio stations.
Most of the pop music in our country is dominated by RnB, Rock, Pop, Ballads, but I'll try to post some artists, especially from Davao.
Joey Ayala is Folk-Rock. I think he also influenced Pinikpikan, Bayang Barrios, Cynthia Alexander (his sister, also very popular) and Kadangyan. They belong to the Neo-ethnic folkrock category of music.

Chimes is one of the poshest malls in Davao, pero I only pass there. Never been to the actual mall.
I wonder why it's strategically placed near a call center area, G-COM. Marketing strategy perhaps?
Sinjin P. August 22nd, 2006, 06:28 AM Ayaw mo kabalaka mga bai kay nagpadala nako ug mensahe sa atong mga silingan nga mga mod aron ila tang matabangan sa pagsticky sa mga thread.
Ady001 August 22nd, 2006, 06:30 AM ^^ Gravy, the breaking news:
Lakitan "Mall" is now open. And as what I've seen, SM was indeed correct in not opening the SM Bacolod for the MassKara Festival. What I saw there are a row of empty stalls. Tsk tsk :ohno:
The Arko project for the Chinatown is undergoing. If only someone will post the pics. It is located in Magsaysay Street.
There seems to be a new building near Ateneo. I just don't know the name. Maybe a cafe? Dunno...

I think so Grave. Nagapamaayo na man G-Mall. The only thing is its outside, but the added place where they placed a KFC made it better. Soon, my favorite stall CD-R King will be there.
The one that needs renovation is Victoria. Ginoo ko, makahilak. The former splendor of Victoria was almost lost. Mora'g hugaw na tan-aw ang park and shop.
This is the ugly mall phenomenon, but this is also the way of life nowadays.

Taking off from where you left Bagani. I do have an inkling as to why our LGU seemed inutile in conjuring up ordinance for underground electric cables. Isn't the closeness of our beloved CE with DLPC got in the way of this? I mean, DLPC is such a huge business and how can't it (they) move the earth (literal meaning intended) for this upgrade. Sure this entails huge sum of money from them (DLPC) and this I think is one humongous reason. Absolutely, this requires some POLITICAL WILL that rises above congenial relations and what not. Davao needs it so badly.

Yeah, that's old Grand Menseng Hotel, (one of Davao's tallest in the 80s at 8 floors) used to be the Central Bank Building in Davao, if I'm not mistaken.

davaoeagle August 22nd, 2006, 07:43 AM The merry garden show season is on
It’s the merry garden season. Go to Davao City and see the exhibits of two groups at the back and in front of SM Mall. One is staged by the Minfed while the other is by the Floriculture Industry of Davao Inc.
What is notable in Davao is that there are very beautiful plants on exhibit as well as in the commercial section. It is very evident that Sansevierias are among the favorites in this southern city. It could be noticed that there are many newer varieties available in Davao than in Manila and other parts of Luzon.
We have been told that Rey Santos who has an outlet at the Manila Seedling Bank in Quezon City had a field day buying a lot of the newer Sansevieria varieties. Our informant tells us that he must have bought no less than R100,000 worth of Sansevierias.
Very noticeable in Davao are the many varieties of bougainvilleas that are tailored into short-statured plants bearing different colors of flowers in one rootstock. Colorful bromeliads are also plentiful in Davao City. So are the newer varieties of aglaonemas developed in Thailand and Indonesia.
Of course, the Davaoeños have plenty of the native Platycerium grande available to the gardening public. Palms continue to be noticeable in this southern city. So are the different varieties of anthuriums. The mini anthuriums which are full of flowers are eye-catchers both in the exhibits as well as in the commercial section.
