if they want to use the energy for a longer hours from the solar panels, they should design a solar panel that can last for 12hrs usable power by using mathematics of the total wattage that can be used.and huge batteries too. perhaps that will cost our city govt almost a billion peso. quanto? a billion peso? OT nako..

It doesn't matter how big your solar panel is,the problem lies in storing this energy. In the middle of Australia they are setting up fields of giant solar panels where the sun stays up to about 9pm they're still working on finding ways to improve this aspect of solar energy like creating more effcient batteries to store power. And talking about LED lights,I have refitted my house from old incandescent bulbs with Halogen downlights in varying wattage with good effects as you can dim it but my electric bills shoot up. So I tried this next generation LED (cannot be dimmed) with disappointing result: aside from it's weak lighting capacity it also has a sickly glow that gives me headache so I remove them and placed back my halogen lights in lower wattage like 15watts.

Singapore eyes Davao city as potential market

http://davaocitynews.blogspot.com/2010/11/singapore-eyes-davao-city-as-potential.html

EYEING Davao City as a potential market for tourism, the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) has urged airline companies to offer direct flights from Davao City to Changi International Airport in Singapore, which is served via Cebu City.

Lynelle Seow, STB area director for Philippines and Brunei, said in yesterday's media briefing at Marco Polo Hotel Davao, said Davao City is a "good market," but Dabawenyo travellers are usually burdened with additional cost as they have to travel to Cebu City before flying to Singapore.

"The Philippine and the Singapore government signed in April an air service agreement providing for additional air capacity to the Philippines, including Davao," she said.

This means, Seow said, that Davao airport can serve more flights, even direct flights, to Singapore, depending on the airlines.

Last year, there were about 10,000 tourists from Davao City who travelled to Singapore, which embarked on a new promotion campaign tagged as "Our Singapore." This replaces its "Uniquely Singapore" campaign which lasted for five years.

Considering that there are no direct flights that serve the Davao-Singapore route, Seow said the figure only shows that "Davao is a healthy market for Singapore."

"Singapore and Davao City has a lot of similarities and this city has always garnered praises from its foreign visitors. Number one is because of the durian. Both are very clean and you have a lot of trees here. Coming from Singapore, Davao City comes as a familiar place which we think goes both ways. The numbers of Dabawenyos going to Singapore, we could say is very healthy," she said.

The Philippines ranked 8th in terms of tourist arrivals in Singapore, with Australia, China, Korea and Indonesia on top in 2009, a one notch higher from the previous year.

This only shows the Filipinos' continuing interest in the island country off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula.

There were 430,000 Filipino tourists who visited Singapore last year. The island country registered more than 10 million tourists in 2009.

"We see tourist arrivals in Singapore to increase by 16 percent this year," Seow said.

The STB this year announced they have improved the country's tourism tagline of "Uniquely Singapore" to "Your Singapore" which Seow explained as their own way of adopting to the growing dynamism of the world.

"This cosmopolitan city always welcome visitors with its dynamism. Things are always changing in Singapore, after one month you would see a new building or a new road, and with each visit our guests would surely have a new experience. Singapore has become a hub of global activities while maintaining the beauty and concentration of the cultures it has," Seow said.

"We are five million in Singapore and one million are expats. Last year we received 10 million visitors which we expect would rise to 12 million this year. Singapore has a lot to offer and this time its Singapore asking our visitors 'what is your Singapore?'" she said.

Your Singapore's website offers overseas visitors to log in and personalize their own itinerary according to their individual needs, preferences and interests.

"You can schedule your stay even before you arrive. Singapore can offer you cheap accommodation to the high-end. Food there is very cheap and you could buy souvenirs for like one dollar (Singapore) that's like thirty pesos," Seow said.

"Filipinos who come for a visit come to shop, to eat and to see sights and we could offer that. During May to July we have the great sale and now, from November 20 to January 2, Filipinos can take in the holiday sights and wonders Singapore has. In Singapore there's always something to see and to experience," she said.

Ang purpose po nang unmarked vehicle to let the would be criminal be unaware of the police presence in the area....Katulad po sa los angeles na magugulat ka na lang pag nag overspeeding ka sa freeway na yung kasunod mo na vehicle police na pala and huhulihin kana.... Police lang po ang may alam kung ano o what type of vehicle they are using... Kumbaga secret po yun...:)

Info tech to be used to help fishery, farm sectors (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/local-news/info-tech-be-used-help-fishery-farm-sectors)

Sunday, November 14, 2010

INFORMATION communications technology will be utilized in the creation of the Farmers Information and Technology Services (Fits), an information system that seeks to help fishermen get a better price for their catch.

This endeavor is part of the government's Techno-Pinoy program.

Information technology for farmers was discussed during the Davao Trade Expo (Date) launch at Marco Polo Hotel during which Lizabel Holganza, chair of Date 2010, explained their action plans for the farming industry.

With the help of DTAC, the premiere telecommunications company in Thailand, Fits will benefit the fisheries and agriculture sectors as the program will provide them with information on gate prices and weather forecast, as well as valuable tips on farming as soon as they will be exposed to the world of information technology.

According to the Fits Information System Web site, this will also be a viable tool to facilitate faster access to information to fast-track delivery of services to clients in agriculture, forestry, and natural resources.

Fits was developed as a Web-based program that is composed of six major databases, namely: technology, experts' profile, farmers' profile, contact firms, publication, and technology video materials.

"The packaging of Davao City will be through "word of mouth" and we will also support these with hard data that we will be proud of.

"Agriculture and tourism will go together in Davao," said Robert Quinto, president of Davao City Chamber of Commerce Industry Incorporated.

The Philippines will be among the few countries that offer high-tech agribusiness that allows farmers to determine forecasts reports, new fertilizers, and tips that will enhance their crops and other agricultural produce.

This will also be linked to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration's weather forecast. Information regarding present and future weather forecasts will be accessible to both farmers and fishermen.

"The plans for the program are also consolidated with those of Regional Director Lourdes Lim of the National Economic Development Authority. This program will help widen and enable us to achieve e-governance, primarily the agri-tourism of our nation," said Holganza.

She added that the National Telecommunication Commission will be launching the Mindanao Portal and Software Expo on December 5-6 in a location that will soon be announced. (Carmelle Marie Harrow)

Training on mangosteen, durian processing held (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/business/training-mangosteen-durian-processing-held)

Sunday, November 14, 2010

DURIAN and mangosteen are among the fruits popularly processed in Davao Region. Apart from jams and candies, demand for healthy and innovative products, such as juices, teas, wines, food supplement capsules, and others, continues to rise.

In effect, there is also an increasing clamor for processing technologies in the region.

Perfect timing for the abundant harvest, the regional office of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), in partnership with DOST-Industrial Technology Development Institute (Itdi), conducted a three-day hands-on trainings on durian and mangosteen processing at Kor-Phil Training Center in Tibungco, Davao City last September 21-23.

These were made possible through the expertise of the DOST-Itdi trainers Maria Elsa M. Falco and Elmer Magora.

About 50 participants, who were mostly from Food Processors Association of Davao, the local government units of Mawab in Compostela Valley, Davao Oriental and Davao City, Technical Education Skills Development Authority (Tesda), and other private firms participated in the training.

A few DOST personnel also joined the trainings to enhance their knowledge and skills.

Although durian has a peculiar odor, its invigorating, refreshing richness and the exotic taste makes the fruit well known in all corners of the world. This motivates fruit processors to produce innovative products, such as durian chips, sauce, spread, and jam, to reach markets locally and internationally.

On the other hand, mangosteen is widely known of having antioxidants that counteract the effects of free radicals in our bodies. Hence, people are craving for healthy products and supplements for their diet. This inspired processors to produce mangosteen jam, wine, vinegar, juice sauce, tea and capsules.

A lecture on Good Manufacturing Practices was also given to ensure that when the participants go back to their respective processing plant, they will produce variety of tasty and safe foods for human consumption.

The undertaking was surely helpful to processors who want to venture into products that are new and healthy. Demand for healthy foods will increase as most people today are health conscious.

Consortium proposed to help microenterprises (http://www.mindanaotimes.net/?p=15025)
Written by: Francisco , Carmelito Q.
Monday, 15 November 2010

The Mindanao Microfinance Council has proposed for the creation of consortium of industry stakeholders that will address the needs of the microenterprises.

Presented during the industry meeting last November 8 in Pasig City, the proposal wants the consortium to look into these issues:
 institutionalizing the national strategy for microfinance;
 developing a financing framework for the poor;
 increase the practice of social performance management among microfinance institutions;  propagating micro-agri
 market segmentation of microfinance institutional clients
 establishing a credit bureau for microfinance to avoid credit pollution and over-indebtedness of the poor

Under this proposal, the consortium will set up technical working groups that will focus on each of these issues.

The proposal is also looking at sett up a microenterprise research and advocacy portal which will serve as a mechanism for information for the microfinance sector in the country.

The portal will “contain a link to the collection of studies in microenterprise development, chronicle of policy dialogues and other activities, and new research being undertaken by participating groups,” the concept paper on it read.

“It shall also serve as the dynamic communication system among consortium members and between the consortium and the public at large,” it added

Under the proposal, groups and individuals who “share the objects of the organizers” are allowed to participate as a general assembly of members will be held to come up with mechanisms on how to run it. They will be formed into a consortium.

Initially, a small steering committee will formulate policies and other related mechanisms so as to answer the concerns of the sector.

The target of the project is that in the next three years there will involved more areas, particularly those that are unserved ur underserved. Also expected to happen is this will help microenterprises to graduate.

The setting up of the portal is also aimed at luring more private financial institutions to offer microfinance products to address the low accessibility of financial assistance to microenterprises.

The council also believes that if the portal is properly run, it will be able help in institutionalizing policies that will “mainstream microentrepreneurship.”

Under the proposal, the consortium must also strengthen the conduct of research by involving its members and come up with activities for consensus building.

Members of the consortium will also hold discussions with government officials on issues related to microenterprises. The consortium is also considered as source of information for media consumption.

Under the proposal, membership of the consortium are “all organizations that have
participated in crafting the policy research and advocacy agenda as well as all participants in the
Mainstreaming Micro conference who will opt to become formally part of this consortium.”

These members will join the general assembly that will be held three times a year.

The steering committee, on the other hand, will be composed of those that have participated in the preparing issues that need to be discussed. However, those who are members of the consortium can even become members of the steering committee if they volunteer to.

Based on the data of the council, the microenterprise sector in the country is about 92% of the registered companies as they are identified as those with assets that are P3 million and below. However, the council took note that the data was “inaccurate in that the bar of asset size is way too high and it does not account for millions of enterprises that exist in the informal economy.”

What is significant, it added, is that these enterprises are located in areas where the poor reside.

In the country, the microfinance industry has provided products to about five million people as it has become an effective tool in fighting industry. However, the council noted that it while it is addressing poverty, the some of the industry clients are not even poor.

“Thus, a more progressive microfinance approach that reaches more of the poor and concerted efforts in promoting greater links of microenterprises to the formal economy can lead to greater poverty reduction and a competitive and more inclusive economy,” the council said.

What must be done, it added, is to strengthen collaboration among microfinance institutions and those agencies whose concerns are microenterprise development.

P40M engine testing center up (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/local-news/p40m-engine-testing-center)

AN ENGINE testing center under the Land Transportation Office (LTO) is set for construction before the year ends.

LTO Operations Division chief Eleanor Calderon said on Monday that a unit under their office, dubbed Motor Vehicle Inspection Center (MVIC), is set to be established within SM City complex with a P40 million budget.

The MVIC will serve as stopping point of all motor vehicles, private or public, before their applications are renewed. It features a machine from France that would check the parts of the vehicle as well as its road-worthiness.

Calderon admitted that the LTO office in Davao Region has its limitations, but assured that its office its doing their best.

"We do check the vehicles. We have a drive testing area but we have it within the compound lang rin. We make the most out of our space and put up cones to see the efficiency and skills of the driving applicant. Kung meron na tayong (MVIC) probably we could start looking into requesting from the national government to provide us a big area for drive testing," Calderon said.

Calderon said the MVIC has been proposed for a long time but have only been given attention three years ago to which a budget of P40 million has been set and is targeted for construction within the year.

Calderon said the city alone has almost 300,000 registered motor vehicles to which 90 percent are private vehicles. Fifty percent of the total number of motor vehicles is comprised of motorcycles.

"Registration from the city increases every year to up to 10 to 15 percent from previous years," Calderon said.

During a press conference, Calderon and former Traffic Management Center (TMC) chief Bibiano Alcuizar, who spoke in behalf of current TMC chief Ret. Col. Desiderio Cloribel, explained to reporters the city's traffic situation.

Alcuizar said that although there needs to have improvement in the quality of drivers, the city's traffic condition in the city "is not the worst in the country".

Calderon said the TMC is working to its limit to oversee the city's traffic condition.

"In addition to our personnel we have 40 deputized personnel from the TMC, 40 from the Traffic Group which is from the Philippine National Police, and 30 from the different police stations. All of them are going out monitoring the streets," she said.

The operations chief also commended the establishment of the Public Safety Command Center (PSCC) where the city monitors 16 strategic areas in the city with 17 state-of-the-art closed circuit television cameras.

The PSCC, currently headed of Central 911 commander Ret. Col. Verner Monsanto, is still under its contractor the Abratique and Associates Inc. (AAI).

AAI assistant project manager Jake Llamas also clarified during the forum that their firm was given 18 months to finish the final phase of the PSCC's creation.

Llamas also said that AAI has received offers from other urban cities in the country to provide their traffic system the same advanced technology. Two of these, Llamas said, are in Manila. (JCZ)

Davao gears up for unified tourism package (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/business/davao-gears-unified-tourism-package)

DAVAO tourism industry stakeholders are eyeing a Davao tourism circuit which will promote interconnectivity with the whole region which is being packaged as one tourism destination.

Department of Tourism Regional Director Art Boncato said they have urged all Davao provinces to identify their tourism products which will be marketed.

"It is the local government, and the private sector telling us how to position them. The role of our department is to consolidate these packages," Boncato said.

He added that they are simplifying the marketing strategy -- first the local stakeholders will identify the product in their province, identify the market and then plan on how to proceed with its growth.

Various stakeholders from Davao del Sur, Davao del Norte, Compostela Valley, Davao Oriental and Davao City recently gathered in a one-day Davao Region Tourism Marketing Workshop.

During the workshop the participants pushed for a One Davao tourism product combining the various tourism attractions of the different local governments in the region into one.

Instead of the local governments competing against each other, now they will be complementing each other, with its interconnectivity being addressed by a planned tourism circuit.

One event that will herald the marketing plan is the coming Davao Regional Food Festival which will feature the various indigenous cuisine of the region.

Christine Dompor, Compostela Valley tourism officer, has vouched for the new tourism strategy as this will encourage a bottoms-up approach where the local private and public sector will identify and develop their own tourism products.

She also cited the concept of public-private partnership at work as they are teaming up with the business sector and the academe to market their attractions particularly ecotourism sites in the province.

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines — At least seven government and private universities and colleges in Mindanao have been identified by the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) as among the top 20 tertiary schools in the country today. A report entitled “Top 20 Universities in the Philippines,” shows the result of a joint study lately conducted by PRC and CHEd based on the average passing in the board examinations of all courses of all institutions of higher learning in the Philippines.

The report listed Davao City’s Ateneo de Davao University as No. 1 among the seven Mindanao-based tertiary schools even as the Jesuit-run school placed overall fifth in the national ranking. The Iligan Institute of Technology (IIT) of the Mindanao State University (MSU) emerged No. 2 in Southern Philippines and came out eighth in the national level, while Xavier University in Cagayan de Oro City captured overall 12th place and garnered third in Mindanao. Davao City councilors approve rezoning for second SM mall (http://www.bworldonline.com/main/content.php?id=21222)

DAVAO CITY -- City councilors here approved the reclassification of a 10-hectare property in Lanang district, about six kilometers north of city hall, from “parks and recreation” to “major commercial zone,” tearing down a major hurdle in the construction of a second SM City shopping mall.

The subcommittee on housing and subdivision development gave the recommendation after the applicant, represented by Southernpoint Properties Corp., submitted all the necessary documents including the barangay council resolution and the certificates of non-objection by the property owners. Southernpoint Properties is a subsidiary of SM Prime Holdings, Inc.

“The applicant intends to construct and operate a commercial shopping mall on the property, hence the application for reclassification,” said city councilor Rachel P. Zozobrado, chairwoman of the subcommittee.

The land was purchased by SM Prime from Dakudao and Sons, Inc., and was previously part of the 40-hectare Lanang golf course, which folded on July 31, 2008 after nearly 30 years of operation due to mounting taxes and maintenance costs.

On July 20, the Office of the City Planning and Development Coordinator issued a certification that the property in question is within the parks and recreation area under the zoning ordinance.

On Sept. 13, the subcommittee conducted a public hearing to discuss the reclassification. After deliberations, the subcommittee recommended the grant of the application of Southernpoint Properties to amend the zoning classification of the property.

The second SM Prime shopping mall in the city, the Lanang mall would be about half in size of the existing SM City Davao Mall along Quimpo Boulevard, south of the city, which opened in November 2001 with a floor area of about 80,000 square meters.

The SM City Lanang is expected to start operations later next year along with SM City in General Santos. SM Prime executives project that around 1,000 new jobs will be generated by the project. Talks are rife here that the new SM City Lanang will feature an IMAX theater.

It will compete for the northern residents of the city with the P4-billion Abreeza Mall of the Ayala Land, Inc., about four kilometers away, which will also open next year after a delay in construction.

The stretch of J.P. Laurel Avenue has become a hub for shopping malls in the city, hosting both SM City and Abreeza, Robinsons Cybergate, Gaisano Mall, and Victoria Plaza.

Confed elects new officers
(http://www.mindanaotimes.net/?p=15038)Written by: Abenis , Tom
Tuesday, 16 November 2010

TIME constraints prevented local government officials from tackling pressing issues during the Confederation of Provincial Governors, City Mayors and Municipal Mayors League Presidents of Mindanao (Confed) at Emar’s Restaurant last Nov. 12.

Instead, they agreed to just elect the new set of officers for the group and to raise the matter before the body again in their next general membership meeting.

Davao del Norte Gov. Rodolfo del Rosario was elected Confed president, replacing South Cotabato Rep. Daisy Fuentes, while Cotabato Gov. Lala Talino-Mendoza was named executive vice president after Mayor Sara Duterte turned down the nomination because she wanted
to concentrate on running Davao City’s affairs.

Confed members agreed to talk about House Bill 2562 dubbed “An act allowing foreign vessels to engage in coastwise trade in the country and for other purposes” in the next meeting. This is in recognition on the need to open more gateway and easy acess for the island’s goods from and to the international markets. The executives also urged Congress to file the respective bills in support of the Situs of Tax and other related tax issues; and supported the Mindanao 2020 Peace and Development Framework Plan.

The Mindanao executives, however, have not dropped the plan to campaign for an increased share in the budget for Mindanao.

“We should be getting like 30 percent of the national budget but now we’re at 16 percent. Compared to Luzon and Visayas definitely we have the highest amount of return,” del Rosario stressed during the forum.

The local executives also urged President Benigno Aquino III to issue an executive order which provides for an air expansion to the island’s airports, but del Rosario cautioned that it would have to be a balanced competition among local and international airlines operating in Mindanao.

“As to what I have gathered here, the Confed thinks that having an open sky in Mindanao would open our tourism and trade. It would be helpful for us to have direct flights from Davao to Singapore without going to Manila or in Cebu to go to Hong Kong, Japan or
Singapore….But definitely we have to balance that to the impact on the local airlines. Between our airlines and international. We have to ensure that our local airlines are protected as far as their volume of passengers are concerned,” he said.

Del Rosario also reminded participants that Confed benefited much from the support it receives from the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) since both of them has a common advocacy for policies that will support the island’s progress.

Meanwhile, MinDA chair Sec. Luwalhati Antonino added that Confed have purposely ask that the induction of its officers be made in Malacañang and in the presence of all the members.

“Now I think finally the leaders of Mindanao realized (that) and we have to be united. Now we have elected who will bring all the voice to Malacañang, I thing we could do much, she said.

Greenpeace ship docks in Mindanao with message (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&r=&y=&mo=&fi=p101116.htm&no=02)

By Mai Gevera

Davao City (16 November) -- Bringing the message of their opposition to coal-fired power plants, the Greenpeace flagship Rainbow Warrior is set to dock at the Makar Wharf in General Santos City on Friday (November 19).

Greenpeace communication officer Lea Guerrero bared the organization's support to the community of Maasim, Sarangani against the plans of putting up a coal plant within the area.

"Greenpeace has been against coal plants as it emits highest of carbon dioxide. We are pushing that it be phased out and rather opt for renewable energy," she said.

It is in Sarangani that a coal plant is proposed to be built, along with another coal plant in Davao City.

The organization is advocating for an Energy Revolution that lets the community quit coal in favor of wind power and solar energy as well as the protection of forests.

One of its strategies to advocate environmental concern is the sailing of Rainbow Warrior, the most famous international environmental campaigning vessel. It has been touring around the world for the past 21 years, sailing against whaling, war, coal plants, and other environmental crimes.

The Rainbow Warrior is on a mission in Southeast Asia to demonstrate and promote right solutions and expose confront wrong practices in global efforts to tackle climate change.

The ship will be packed with adventure and exciting events which include on-board and quayside activities, exhibits, concerts, and classic high-profile Greenpeace campaigns. (PIA XI)

This greenpeace rainbow warrior might as well visit China where they're building coal fired power plants on a weekly basis to satisfy the world's hunger on manufactured goods. And of course Indonesia and Brazil where the rainforest have been decimated by thousands of hectares on a yearly basis. They've missed the target bigtime.:ohno:

More mariculture parks set up in Davao Region (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/business/more-mariculture-parks-set-davao-region)

THE regional office of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has announced the establishment of another mariculture park in Davao Region, this time in Matina, Davao City.

BFAR Davao Region Director George Campeon said Tuesday they are gaining support from the Aquino administration in their thrust to preserve the region's aquatic resources.

Mariculture parks have been established in Malita, Pantukan, Panabo and Samal.

Campeon said the setting up of mariculture parks is timely as they are strictly complying with laws and regulations concerning fishing conservation.

At the same time, Campeon said they have continued to monitor the implementation of the seasonal fishing ban, along with the Organization Council of Fisheries, at Toril Fishport.

This is part of the conservation management of tuna fishing that has been a regular program of Bfar, wherein they stop fishing operations for three months in the high seas to allow spawning of fishes.

"(But) the entry of fishing vessels is not affected with the implementation of this program," Campeon said.

Though tuna is said to be borderless creatures, they spawn and eventually migrate or go anywhere to the sea. BFAR is still concerned with tuna fishing in the region as the Philippines ranked 7th among tuna producing countries.

BFAR has also assisted small fishermen in the region by introducing the payao fishing, an aggregating device that would enhance small fishermen's catch at sea and this also reduces fishing venture expenses as well.

Payao are structures installed at a predetermined location of fishing areas in coastal areas in Region 11. Basically, payao has three functional parts, the floating platform, the anchorage part of it and the attractant section or habong in the local dialect.

The attractant section will be the bamboo poles with coconut leaves where fishes and micro organisms dwell and feed. The payao serves as a localized food chain or food web. (Carmelle Marie Harrow)

54% of the energy in the US is from coal. there are about 600 coal plants there. They are the world's largest producers of carbon dioxide emissions. maybe this greenpeace people, rather than making an appearance in the philippines, should instead dock in the US everyday and stay there.

70% of the energy in the philippines is renewable energy. if there is a plan to build a coal-fired plant here, it is out of dire need, not convenience. i respect davaoenos who are against the construction of a coal-fired plant in the city, pero etong mga third-party international pakialameros...this is blatant hypocrisy.

Upgrading of DICCEP proposed (http://www.mindanaotimes.net/?p=15102)
Written by: Abenis , Tom
Wednesday, 17 November 2010

A proposal to upgrade the Davao Industry Cluster Capacity Enhancement Project (DICCEP) to DICCEP II is being pushed to further increase competitiveness and to attract more investments in the Davao Region by involving a wide range of cluster industries.

This was the main agenda that was tackled during the meeting held at the DTI regional office on Nov. 15, where industry leaders from the different clusters and executives from participating government agencies, recognized the need to focus on the importance of industrial cluster in order to streamline the cluster’s operation.

Under this concept, stakeholders aim to extend nationwide what the DICCEP has achieved by promoting partnerships and opening up market opportunities under the National Industry Cluster Capacity Enhancement Project. Currently there are eight identified industry clusters in the Davao Region, such as the banana, mango, coconut, seaweed, mining, tourism, and information and communications technology.

The meeting also identified the typical functions of stakeholders for cluster development through meeting the needs of demanding customers by instilling motivation among its players for innovation; taking note on the importance of input suppliers which specialized on the needs of the industry by providing high quality materials or parts for example; identifying competition among market rivals located in the area by upgrading efforts by the firms to better their position; and the crucial role of the supporting public and private agencies and research institutes to provide specialized advice, or push for proposals for the industry’s improvement.
The group pointed out that industrial cluster has the power and high potential to give all these factors to firms and industries within the cluster.

The group was also trying to iron out the details of the requirements for DICCEP upgrading and would be expected to meet at least, one of the following:

 Involvement of wider range of stakeholders in the different layers of the value chain for collaborative activities targeting higher level of competitiveness, better business environment, and/or regional brand development.

 Conduct research or pilot projects to meet the higher level of demand from the market and develop better market channels.

 Dissemination of the results of the research or trail projects which conducted in DICCEP, to meet the high demands of customers.

“Slowly the market is recovering. There are some buyers from Dubai and other countries whereas the price of bananas is going up now, every week. In fact there are investors coming in like Japan’s Marubeni which is planning to invest on the banana industry, so it’s important that” said Ireneo Dalayon, CEO of Federation of ARB’S banana-based Cooperative of Davao, one of the active participants of the meeting.

“What we are taking up now is to conduct research with the help of the academe and other government agencies like DA and DTI on banana diseases for example,” she added.

DICCEP, a Japan International Cooperation Agency funded initiative seeks to promote partnerships between the private and public sectors and aims to provide technical and institutional capacities for the Davao Region’s various industry clusters.

IRR for OFW center passes first reading (http://www.mindanaotimes.net/?p=15096)
Written by: Fusilero , Kristianne
Wednesday, 17 November 2010

LAWMAKERS approved on first reading the proposed implementing rules and regulations of the ordinance that will create a center to monitor and protect the welfare of the Overseas Filipino Workers.

The center would also be the place where overseas workers can get help or find job opportunities outside the country. It will be placed under “the City Mayor’s Office which shall act as the coordinating, regulatory and monitoring body of the local government to focus on OFW issues and concerns and to be an office rendering services to any OFW and to OFW dependents.”

The OFW Ordinance of Davao City provides measures that will guide Davaoeños who are applying for jobs overseas. The proposal was referred to the city council’s committee on rules, privileges, laws and ordinances for appropriate action and further fine tuning of the item.

Sec. 2 or the declaration of policies under the Rule I of the proposal cites that “the local government shall pursue and implement programs and policies that shall afford full protection to OFWs and their families, promote their interests and safeguard their welfare, taking into consideration their vulnerabilities and for their efforts of empowerment and self-determination.”

Visitor arrivals to PH reach 3.3 M (http://www.edgedavao.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=3562:visitor-arrivals-to-ph-reach-33-m&catid=34:the-economy&Itemid=68)
Monday, 15 November 2010 00:00
by Lorie Ann A. Cascaro

The number of visitor arrivals in the country this year reached 3.3 million individuals, topped by the United States of America which shared 582,537 visitors, or 19.31 percent of the total volume in 2009 based on the AD Cards & Shipping Manifests.
This was bared by Ma. Corazon “Junjun” Jorda-Apo, head of Team North America of the Philippine department of tourism, during the Davao region tourism marketing conference and planning workshop on November 9-10 at the Apo View Hotel.
“Our core market consists of the US, Korea, China and Japan. If something happens to this market, malaking laglag sa ating arrivals (it will constitute a huge decline in the country’s number of arrivals),” Apo said.
East Asian countries contributed 51-55 percent of the foreign market, the US and Canada altogether shared 23 percent, while Europe 10 percent. The European market is considered an investment market, Apo said, “So, don’t put all your eggs in one basket,” addressing local tourism officers, tour operators and other business owners who were in attendance.
In 2009, after the US, Korea shared 16.5 percent, Japan 10.77% and China 5.14% of the total volume of arrivals. However, from January to July this year, Korea ranked first with a 19.93 percent share after having rebounded from the depreciation of its currency. Apo noted that the given data were not yet affected by the hostage-taking of Asian tourists in Manila last August 23.
Top destinations
Excluding Metro Manila, which is expected to have the highest number of arrivals as the main gateway to the country, Davao City ranks five among the top destinations, following Cebu, Boracay, Camarines Sur and Baguio City in that order. This was based on data from Department of Tourism (DOT) regional offices, local tourism offices and accommodation establishments.
Davao was in the top three last year, but Arturo P. Boncato, Jr., DOT 11 director, said that the government had based the report only on accredited establishments. Noting that there are only about 1,300 accredited establishments out of some 4,700 rooms in the city, Boncato added that accreditation was only optional for DOT before the implementation of Tourism Act of 2009.
“By next year, the DOT will be empowered to accredit all hotels and resorts. We will help them achieve global standards in order to invite people from all over the world,” he said.
Among the nine leading destinations for international tourists---Davao, Bohol, Boracay, Camarines Sur, Camiguin, Cebu, Baguio, Negros Oriental and Palawan---only Davao City did not have visitors from Australia and Germany.
Apo said that it is possible that some visitors came from these two countries but either very few or were not included in the list for unknown reasons.
Meanwhile, Davao has been identified as the “green destination” for Americans following the “green” trend in the US. This pertains to eco-friendly practices such as green weddings, and buildings like green hotels that are using recyclable materials and renewable energy. “Suppliers who deploy green practices are favored among acutely aware consumers,” Apo said.
Targeting balikbayans
The US has a total population of 310 million, and 61.4 million or 20 percent of them are outbound travelers, Apo said, adding that Americans are highly domestic travelers. The greatest challenge for Philippine tourism, according to her, is to aim for more visitors from the US, confident of the fact that in the last three years, only the Philippines did not suffer from a decline in arrivals among all Asian countries.
Without including the pure-blooded Americans, Chinese-Americans have the biggest population in the US, followed by Filipino-Americans (Fil-Am) with about 3.1 million. These Filipino-Americans are not overseas contract workers, but citizens of the US who are holders of “green cards.”
Hence, it is a challenge for Filipinos, especially Dabawenyos, to consider balikbayans (returning countrymen) as a target foreign market, Apo said. Fil-Ams have the highest household income of all Asian Americans in the US, she added, earning between 60 to 75,000 US dollars per annum.
“Filipino Americans also have the natural tendency to visit the Philippines. All we have to do is to assure them about their safety here,” Apo said. She also mentioned the difference of the Fil-Ams first and second generations. Those who belong in the first generation were born in the Philippines and migrated to the US, and they tend to come home and stay with their relatives.
Meanwhile, those in the second generation were born and raised in the US. Although they do not tend to come home because they do not even consider themselves as Filipinos, they tend to travel more upon reaching young adulthood stage, when they start to question their true identity.
Those born between 1940 and 1960 belong to the generation of “baby boomers.” These people are now in their retiring age. While they are not tied down by schedules, Apo noted, the baby boomers in the US have bigger disposable income and enough savings to pay for outbound travels for leisure.
They prefer luxurious accommodations and wellness or health care services, hence, making them as potential customers for hotels, resorts, and spa establishments in the country. “More educated than their parents, many of them don’t want to settle down in the US,” Apo added.
In aiming for American tourists, a certain destination or business establishment must have a website because aside from the fact that the internet was developed in the US, online booking has been prevalent there in the last five years, Apo said.
The Philippine department of tourism pioneered in using social networking sites and online advertising in targeting foreign tourists. These sites may include Yahoo, Google, and Youtube, which are cheaper than placing advertisements in international television channels.

Visitor arrivals to PH reach 3.3 M (http://www.edgedavao.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=3562:visitor-arrivals-to-ph-reach-33-m&catid=34:the-economy&Itemid=68)

by Lorie Ann A.

WORLD’S TOP 100 OUTSOURCING CITIES Davao ranks 3rd among RP’s six major cities (http://www.edgedavao.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=3592:worlds-top-100-outsourcing-cities-davao-ranks-3rd-among-rps-six-major-cities&catid=41:ict-hub&Itemid=75)
Monday, 15 November 2010 00:00
by Greg Deligero and Lorie Ann A. Cascaro

Davao City ranks third among the six major cities that made it to the 2010 Top Outsourcing Cities in the world released by Tholons, a leading full-service strategic advisory firm for global outsourcing and research.
Metro Manila ranks 4th in the world followed by Cebu City which at 9th. Davao City ranks 69th. It is the only city in Mindanao which made it to the list.
Meanwhile, Sta. Rosa, Laguna or Metro Laguna is at 88th while two other Visayas cities, Iloilo City and Bacolod City, rank 98th and 100th, respectively.
“Change has been the best descriptive word for the outsourcing industry in 2009. This year, Tholons encompassed the world’s Top 100 Outsourcing cities - twice the number in previous lists. The expansion of the list has created an avenue for a more concise understanding of industry movements across 49 countries from 10 defined regions,” the firm said.
“The 2010 List of Top 100 Outsourcing Cities is a deliberate attempt to encapsulate such trends in this new era of services globalization. Thus, the list is not only a reflection of the current competitiveness (and stature) of cities in the global outsourcing landscape, it provides insight to the future potential of locations in addressing emerging trends and demands in services globalization,” it added.
In analyzing service delivery locations, Tholons covers six broad categories. These are: scale and quality (labor pool, skills output, and graduate output); cost (cost of operations, cost of training, cost of real estate, cost of bandwidth, cost of living and cost of other infrastructure); business catalyst (government benefits/incentives, competitive landscape, untapped labor pool and employment profile); infrastructure (connectivity, bandwidth availability and transportation); risk profile (commercial risk, political risk, natural risk and social risk) and quality of life (social infrastructure like hospitals, educational institutions, etc., non-work culture and the availability of recreation/leisure activities.
ICT Davao president Eriberto E. Barriga said Davao City’s performance in the list “is a clear message that the city is on its way to becoming a key global player in the BPO arena.”
“Being in the Top 100 would compel the big BPO players to re-examine their perception about Davao that being part of Mindanao it is not a safe haven for BPO investors. The playing field now is about talent, talent, talent. And Davao has a rich supply of quality talent, notwithstanding the ideal infrastructure already in place and the strong support of the local government and a very committed and passionate ICT industry that will continue to work together and help meet and generate the target of employing more than 30 thousand individuals by 2016,” he said.
At present, Barriga bared that there are three business process outsourcing (BPO) companies engaging in finance, accounting and banking that will visit Davao City in December.
He got the information during the International Outsourcing Summit (IOS) 2010 last October 26-27 at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza, Manila which he attended.
In this 2nd IOS organized by the Business Processing Association of the Philippines, Department of Trade and Industry and Commission on Information and Communication Technology, Davao City was featured in the exhibit as the emerging city partner. It was participated in by chief executive officers and business leaders of the outsourcing industry from 25 countries to explore significant potential engagements.
Many participants were impressed and warmly reacted to the audio-visual and power point presentations showcasing Davao City during the summit, Barriga said. The booth of the city delegates had 80 walk-ins and 16 of them expressed interest in potential visits by November and December, he added.
During the business matching, the Davao City delegation had 12 meetings and eight of them expressed their intention to visit, including the three BPOs mentioned earlier, while others are in technical support and general services, Barriga said. He added that these companies prefer to work stealthily and within the radar.
This is due to the fact that clients still do not feel safe in Davao, as stated by Jason Magnaye, chief of the Davao City Investment and Promotion Center, who also attended the IOS. “The city has the right amount and quality of manpower and infrastructure. Our challenge is to work on peace and order,” he added.
Part of the road map of information and technology (IT) BPO sector is to hit 20 to 25 billion US dollars by 2016. This will employ from 900,000 to 1.3 million individuals. “There is a strong need to tweak the talents of our manpower by intervening in educational trainings and enhancing the visibility of the country’s brand,” Barriga said.
Magnaye also said that part of positioning Davao in the BPO industry is to promote the lifestyle in the city. “It will be a twist of our promotion by telling them that we have quality education far better than other competing cities and that we have strong potentials for businesses,” he added.
At present, the city contributes more than 10,000 employees to the BPO industry and having a share by five to 10 percent of the total projected revenue is already humungous and significant, Barriga said.
As to the possibility of the United States and other developed countries to cease outsourcing once they recover from recession, Lizabel “Wit” Holganza, member of the board of trustees of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc., and former ICT Davao president, said, “Industry experts say that it will go in a cycle because the jobs that companies outsource are not part of their expertise. Even the Philippine government has started to employ a third party for some functions,” she said.
Aside from attracting BPOs to the city, Barriga asked, “Why not also focus on local groups, pull them together and set up call centers ourselves?” This may be possible through various workshops.

Government to pour in major Mindanao agri infra projects (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/business/government-pour-major-mindanao-agri-infra-projects)

WITH its strong agribusiness potentials, Mindanao remains on top of the National Government's priority in agricultural development with more agri-related PPP (public-private partnership) projects coming into the region, the Department of Agriculture (DA) said.

In his keynote speech during the recently-concluded Davao Trade Expo 2010, Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala emphasized that the country can only be self-sufficient in its food requirements if Mindanao's agricultural land is maximized to its full potentials.

"Gustong iparating ng Pangulo na ang Mindanao ang nauuna sa aming listahan na isasalang sa mga proyekto ng gobyerno. Dahil dito sa Mindanao, maganda ang lugar, masisikap ang mga magsasaka at maraming mga entrepreneurs," he said. (The President wants to make it known that Mindanao is first in our list for government projects. Because in Mindanao, the place is beautiful, the farmers are hardworking and there are many entrepreneurs.)

Citing Mindanao's role in the country's agricultural development, Alcala said Mindanao will be given a boost under the Aquino administration as the DA will soon be putting up grain terminals in the six regions of Mindanao.

With the new government's thrust on PPP, Alcala said Mindanao is a priority beneficiary of the grain terminal project, which he hopes, will help strengthen the corn industry in the island-region. The grains terminal is a storage facility that can prolong the shelf life of the corn seeds for one year.

Meanwhile, DA is also putting up three trading posts in Mindanao.

"Farmers can go directly to these trading posts," Alcala said, adding that this will protect the farmers from the exploitation of middle traders.

Alcala also said that farmers' cooperatives can now access financial support from the Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP) along with its conduit rural banks.

"We can never be self-sufficient without Mindanao. Let's make Davao, Mindanao self-sustaining," said Alcala, adding that the National Government pins hopes for economic growth on Mindanao's agricultural strength.

Mindanao grows most of the country's major crops for export such as rubber, pineapple, cacao, seaweeds as well as banana and coconut.

The island-region's crops accounts for over 40 percent of the country's food requirements while at the same time contributing more than 30 percent to the national food trade.

Alcala said Mindanao is a typhoon-free region, making it more suitable to grow high value crops especially rice. The Mindanao soil, aside from its fertility, is also suitable to most of the country's high value crops.

"The current agricultural development thrust for Mindanao will definitely give impetus to Mindanao's strategic role as the country's main food source," said Secretary Luwalhati Antonino, chair of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA).

She said current initiatives of DA for Mindanao will help facilitate the Mindanao 2020 Peace and Development Framework's long-term goal of establishing a progressive and food secure Mindanao, widely recognized as a prominent center for agri-industry.

The Mindanao 2020, which resulted from a series of Mindanao-wide stakeholder consultations spearheaded by MinDA, specifically envisions agriculture and agribusiness to remain as primary drivers of Mindanao's economy 20 years from now.

The framework then strongly recommends strengthening and widening agriculture (including fishery) and agribusiness as linchpins for broad-based Mindanao development. (PR)

China Bank bullish on Mindanao (http://www.mindanaotimes.net/?p=15157)
Written by: Escovilla , Joel B.
Thursday, 18 November 2010

CHINA Banking Corporation will open five to seven more branches in Mindanao by next year as it gears up to strengthen its visibility in the island region.

First in the pipeline are offices in Panabo, Toril, Koronadal and Midsayap, “depending on the security situation,” Hudson Q. Uy, China Bank Mindanao area head, said. “While I don’t know the exact figures, the income in Mindanao is quite substantial.”

He said the bank is heavily invested in agri-businesses, commercial and corporate borrowings. To date, China Bank has 22 offices in Mindanao including Cagayan de Oro, Butuan, Pagadian, Ozamis, Dipolog, Butuan, Iligan, Davao, Tagum, General Santos and Zamboanga.

Uy said China Bank recognizes that Davao City is the hub in Mindanao, with the right blend of commercial properties and agriculture, particularly the wide areas planted to bananas, along with the big-ticket projects like Abreeza Complex of the Ayala Malls Group and SM City-Lanang.

Alberto A. Ramos, China Bank’s Private Banking Group head, said China Bank is really very aggressive in expanding even where most banks are scared to go.

“We are in expanding branches up to 400 in 2014,. this is just commitment since we see there’s too much potential in the Philippines. Of all the banks in the country we are expanding the most in terms of branch network,”

From January to September this year, the bank posted P3.75 billion in consolidated net income or an increase of 17% compared to the same period last year. The performance translates to 16.13% return on equity and a 2.13 percent return on assets. “Considerably, it’s one of the highest in the industry. We attribute out income on treasury operations and growth of loans,” Ramos said.

Gross loans nationwide reached P107.31 billion from P96.2 billion year-on-year, mainly driven by commercial and corporate accounts. It’s non-performing loans reduced to P6.26 billion due to stringent screening of loans applications and tighter monitoring of collections, boosting its NPL ratio to 4.31 percent from 4.94 percent last year.

ADDU hosts Mindanao IDP Summit (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&r=&y=&mo=&fi=p101119.htm&no=07)

Davao City (19 November) -- Approximately a hundred internally displaced peoples (IDPs), humanitarian groups, government agencies and members of the civil society organizations from various parts of Mindanao will troop to the Ateneo de Davao University for the 2010 Mindanao IDP Summit on November 22, 2010 from eight o'clock in the morning until five o'clock in the afternoon.

The summit theme "Voices and Narratives on IDP: The Mindanao Journey," reflects the primary goal of the gathering, that is, raising the marginal voices of the IDPs on account of armed conflict.

"It is high time that we create a space for those who bear the brunt of war in Mindanao. We need to listen to the voices of those who are displaced by armed conflict if we are to take seriously the task of charting our roadmap to development particularly in Mindanao," said Lourdesita S. Chan, the summit coordinator and director of the Social Research Training and Development Office of Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU).

According to Dr. Christine Diaz, chairperson of the Social Sciences and Education Division of AdDU, " The university (AdDU is hosting the summit since migration is one of the frontier social issues that the Jesuits are engaged with in consonance with their General Congregation No. 35. We also believe that understanding the movement of people in Mindanao having been dislocated due to war will give us a clearer view in developing programs and projects to assist the needs of the IDPs."

Based on the figures provided by the International Organization of Migration Tracking Update, for Maguindanao Province alone, as of July 23, 2010, there were a total of 18, 874 families or around 94,000 to 113,000 are living in displacement either in evacuation centers, relocation sites or as home-based IDPs.

Determining reliable figures on the number of IDPs remains a huge challenge, both because the displacement in Mindanao is characterized by frequent population movements, and because of incomplete collection of information with some groups of IDPs, not captured in government data (Mindanews, 16 November 2009).

It is on this premise that the summit on IDPs has been conceived. "This is aimed not only to provide the venue to gather IDP-work related stories, experience, lessons, insights and perspectives of those involved in such undertaking in Mindanao but also to surface concerned partner's expectations regarding possible collaborative efforts among the stakeholders in addressing the concern of IDPs," said Luz Rodriguez, Executive Director of MAGI. (RTCJ/pr)

Sunrun Race Director Tom Tan said, “in this annual event, thousands of runners are expected to respond to the starting gun at the Victoria Plaza Mall Parking lot at 4am where the 21K and 42K categories will start, while the 3K, and 5K categories will follow en masse at 6am having the same 42K route, but with their respective shorter turning points going back to the start/finish line at Victoria Plaza Mall.”

Organized by the Sunday Runners (SUNRUN), this year’s event will be festive as all 42K finishers will receive a commemorative finishers’ medal and will be earlier treated to a pre-run carbo-loading on December 4 at 4:00 pm at the Grand Regal Hotel’s Pantawan Hall, Tan said.

Meanwhile, Sunrun president Dr. Oscar Escudero, said the Run Staging Center will wait up to the last runners for them to receive their respective commemorative finishers’ medals. 42K runners are all entitled to raffle with major prizes such as Panasonic Home Theater Audio, a washing machine, digital camera and stand fan among others, even while they are still running, Escudero added.

Race Director Tom Tan said this year’s marathon route will differ from their previous 26 annual marathons citing that the race will start at the Victoria Plaza Parking lot to J.P. Laurel Ave., Quirino St., Bankerohan Bridge, McArthur Highway, and runners will have to turn right to Maa and back turning right to McArthur up to St. Peter College in Toril where the turning point is and back to Victoria Plaza. The 21K will have the same route skipping the Maa Road and straight to Ulas as turning point and back to Victoria.

Registration is now going at SUNRUN registration centers at Petron Monteverde along Gempesaw corner Monteverde Sts. with Tel. No. 2216278 from 9am to 5pm and at the Sports Depot, Ground Floor, Victoria Plaza Mall in Bajada with Tel No. 221 3376 from 10am to 6pm.

Registration fees are pegged at P200 for the 3K, and 5K that is inclusive of a running singlet, light breakfast and finishers’ certificate while the 21K is P300 and 42K is P400 respectively.

Tan said that only top finishers of the 21K will receive medals while all finishers of the 42K Marathon will have pre-run carbo-loading and will be awarded with commemorative finisher’s medals.

Sara: Davao airport needs rehabilitation (http://www.dailymirror.ph/Nov-2010/11192010/front2.html)
BY JUDY QUIROS

The Davao International Airport (DIA) needs to undergo rehabilitation, Mayor Sara Duterte said.

She made the comment in reaction to the issue of “open skies” which the Confederation of Provincial Governors, City Mayors and Municipal Mayors League Presidents of Mindanao (Confed) is currently reviewing.

“There is a need to renovate the airport. Some of the equipment have already bogged down. The facility should be updated,” she told reporters in an interview.

She also confirmed that no financial assistance is being allocated in the city’s annual budget for the DIA as this is of national concern.

But the mayor said the city recently helped in the repair of one of the X-ray machines at the DIA.

The city is also providing security personnel inside the DIA as well as providing food for the K-9 bomb-sniffing dogs deployed in the facility.

Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) chair Luwalhati Antonino said she has already personally talked to the officials of the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) regarding the improvement of ports, including the DIA.

“DOTC has already programmed to improve major ports in Mindanao including Davao City,” she said.

During the Confed general assembly and election of officers held recently in Davao City, newly elected Confed president Davao del Norte Governor Rodolfo del Rosario said the body will review the open skies policy.

The project was pushed and is supported by former South Cotabato Governor Daisy Avance-Fuentes, past Confed president.

“Maybe the open skies will improve the economy but we have to balance its impact to the local airlines. If we can assure the local airlines will be amply protected, we will favor the proposal,” del Rosario said.

Ang mga local airlines nagpalami lang na sila sa monopoly, nag-enjoy sila sa lack of competition maong dili kaayo high quality ang ilang services. Since steady ilang pangwarta out of laziness.

Open skies dili paasabot nga mapurdoy ang local airlines... kinahanglan lang sila molihok ug maningkamot tungod sa kadaghan sa competition....... inconvenience ra na sa ilaha that is why they protest. Mga tamad...

Free FTA forum slated on Monday (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/business/free-fta-forum-slated-monday)

TO LET more stakeholders understand further the free trade agreements (FTAs), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) will conduct an FTA information session on November 22 at the Royal Mandaya Hotel in Davao City.

The one-day activity dubbed as "Doing Business in Free Trade Areas" is expected to gather the exporters, distributors, traders, customs brokers, freight forwarders, members of the academe, and government agencies.

It will be the venue for these stakeholders to learn more about the Philippines-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (PJEPA), Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Free Trade Agreement, and a number of Asean Regional FTAs, namely: Asean-China, Asean-Japan, Asean-Korea, and Asean-Australia-New Zealand FTAs.

DTI-Davao Regional Director Marizon Loreto said FTAs bring numerous trade benefits especially to the exporters.

"One of these benefits is the reduction of tariff that will make Philippine products more competitive in the international market. By attending the forum, participants will get better understanding and appreciation of these FTAs especially the benefits that they can get from each of them," she said.

The information session will cover discussions on market opportunities with focus on products with zero or reduced tariff rates under existing FTAs, as well as the procedures in availing such.

It will also feature business people who will share their experiences in having utilized FTAs to their advantage.

The forum will be conducted in partnership with the Bureau of Customs, Tariff Commission, Export Development Council, Philippine Exporters Confederation Inc., and Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Interested parties may contact Rosemarie Enginco, head of DTI-Davao's Trade and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Development Division, or Mary Rose Borinaga at (082) 224-0511 local 415 for further inquiries.

Davao Media Freedom Day launching set (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/local-news/davao-media-freedom-day-launching-set)

MEDIA practitioners in Davao are launching the First Davao Media Freedom Day on Tuesday, November 23, in commemoration of the first anniversary of the Ampatuan massacre.

The launching will be held at the Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU) Jacinto Campus from 9 a.m. to 12 a.m.

The activity, which is envisioned to be celebrated every year afterwards, intends to focus on what oppresses the media not just in terms of censorship but also in how media is corrupted, the organizers said.

This is Davao media's way of not forgetting the impunity by which the massacre was committed and, at the same time, thresh out lessons from it so that the victims will not have died in vain.

The activity is in coordination with the ADDU Mass Communications Program under Jeremy S. Eliab.

It will have a forum as its main feature with author-peace advocate Bro. Karl Gaspar CSsR, Sun.Star Davao Editor-in-Chief Stella A. Estremera, ABS-CBN station manager Trisha Corpus, GMA-Davao news anchor Temujin "Tek" Ocampo, and lawyer Carlos Isagani T. Zarate.

Edge Davao Editor-in-chief Antonio M. Ajero is forum moderator.

The forum will be followed by the opening of the Mindanews Photo Exhibit and the release of 58 balloons.

The activity is spearheaded by Sun.Star Davao with ABS-CBN and GMA Davao, and the new dxRA with the support of Initiatives for Peace in Mindanao (InPeace), Union of Peoples Lawyers in Mindanao, and the Alliance Against Impunity in Mindanao.

This man made lagoon was once the exclusive use of the owners for fishing until recently when they turned the area into an eco-tourism park. adjacent to this is a beautiful beach and a wildlife sanctuary where one can spot wild boars and deers. the area is surrounded by forest and banana plantation.

from another goy din from thread 116...not sure who he was pero he stated that the lot beside the mall will be made of use after the renovation...a building with a bridge connected to the main mall "will be built" according to him...:)

MANILA, Philippines - The Australian Embassy presents the 8th Australian Film Festival featuring critically-acclaimed feature and short animated films from Nov. 26 to Nov. 28 in Manila and Nov. 30 to Dec. 5 in Davao.

The festival will open with a special screening of the “claymated” feature film Mary and Max by Academy Award-winning director Adam Elliot. The film’s set construction manager, Shaun Patten, will be in Manila to open the festival and to conduct masterclasses on “The Art of Mary and Max” at the University of the Philippines Film Institute and De La Salle University-College of Saint Benilde School of Design and Arts.

“Patten’s visit will further enhance our existing linkages developed through the film festival in the past few years, including through workshops conducted by visiting Australian actors and directors for student film producers and directors,” Ambassador Rod Smith said.

Also featured are The Magic Pudding, a film based on an Australian children’s classic and the mixed animation and live action film, Look Both Ways. Elliot’s Oscar-winning Harvie Krumpet leads this year’s selection of short films which also includes Footnote, The Projectionist, Mother Tongue, Mozzie and the Oscar-nominated shorts The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello, Ward 13 and Birthday Boy.

“The Embassy is pleased to continue our tradition of providing Filipinos the opportunity to experience Australian film excellence and learn more about Australian popular culture, history and contemporary values,” Ambassador Smith said.

The Australian film festival is now entering its eighth year. Separately, the Embassy has promoted Australian film through local film festival Cinemanila, including by supporting the visit of Cinemanila founder and director Amable “Tikoy” Aguiluz to Australia in 2007.

The Australian film industry holds the distinction of producing the world’s first full-length feature film, The Story of the Kelly Gang, in 1906. Today, Australian actors, such as Nicole Kidman, Mel Gibson, Russel Crowe, Hugh Jackman, Eric Bana, and Cate Blanchett, have carved out successful careers in Hollywood. Australia’s state-of-the art digital and visual effects facilities and spectacular locations also make it as a sought-after location for filming and post production of foreign movies, including The Matrix trilogy, Superman Returns and Charlotte’s Web.

The 8th Australian Film Festival will run from Nov. 26 to 28 at Glorietta 4 Cinema 4, Makati City, and Nov. 30 to Dec. 5 at SM City Davao. The festival is presented by the Australian Embassy, Screen Australia, and the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in cooperation with the Ayala Malls Cinemas, Greenbelt, Glorietta, Ayala Center, SM Cinema and SM City Davao. Partners include Philippine Airlines, Makati Shangri-La Hotel, 2nd Avenue, Jack TV, 99.5 RT and ClickTheCity.com. For information screenings and master classes, visit www.philippines.embassy.gov.au.

Kalma lang mo ani nga post ha.. ako lang quote para mangutana ko. Para klaro lang.

Was it really true that Davao did not allow the entry of SB in the city in favor of the local shops?

Kanang ingong nga walay market kay out of the question man na kay usa man ta sa pinakadatu nga syudad.

Though it doesn't really matter now because we'll soon have ours soon. but, I am not even sure if having SB matters at all kay its proven na Davao is the most marketable city in the Island.

Royce Gracie is a living legend among martial artists and fight fans.1 She with the unrivalled success in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), similar to that of our very own Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao in the world of boxing today.
MetroLifestyle Fitness Center & Spa hosted Royce Gracie…Up Close & Personal 2 on Sunday, November 14, 2010. MetroLifestyle-Davao, Philippines is one of the few stops of Royce Gracie’s Southeast Asia Tour conducting seminars with focus in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu no-gi techniques.
This is a ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity to meet and learn from Royce Gracie, pronounced as Hoyce Gracie. For the sake of those who are not familiar with the man, Royce’s reputable career as a fighter began in 1993 after defeating three opponents in the first Ultimate Fighting Championship. His opponents consistently outweighed him by more than 50 pounds. He went on to win three UFC titles and today is the only man in the history of no holds barred matches to successfully defeat four opponents in one night.
Royce is still active in the fight world. He fought the longest MMA match in history, going over 90 minutes against Japanese superstar Kazushi Sakuraba at the PRIDE Grand PRIX 2000. Along with his total domination of the Olympic Judo Gold Medalist Hidehiko Yoshida in PRIDE Shockwave 2003.
Royce’s style in teaching his technique is mastery by repetition, and by understanding the practical and effective application of the moves simulating an actual street fight. The technical level seemed about right for the audience: basic enough for the beginners but with enough meat for the more experienced martial artists.
For the women participants, this wasn’t really concerning any technical aspects about BJJ or self defense but more of admiring Royce’s personality. All throughout the seminar he showed sense of humor, soft on the girls, tough on the guys, and the passion for what he is doing.

8TH AUSTRALIAN FILM FESTIVAL TO ANIMATE FILIPINO MOVIEGOERS

http://www.philippines.embassy.gov.au/mnla/medrel101118.html

Rediscover the magic of animation as the Australian Embassy presents the 8th Australian Film Festival featuring critically-acclaimed feature and short animated films from 26 November to 28 November in Manila and 30 November to 5 December in Davao.

The festival will open with a special screening of the “claymated” feature film Mary and Max by Academy Award-winning director Adam Elliot. The film’s set construction manager, Shaun Patten, will be in Manila to open the festival and to conduct masterclasses on 'The Art of Mary and Max' at the University of the Philippines Film Institute and De La Salle University-College of Saint Benilde School of Design and Arts.

“Patten’s visit will further enhance our existing linkages developed through the film festival in the past few years, including through workshops conducted by visiting Australian actors and directors for student film producers and directors,” Ambassador Smith said.

Mary and Max features the voice talents of Academy Award winner Philip Seymour Hoffman (Doubt, Capote), Emmy Award-winning actress Toni Collette (Sixth Sense, About A Boy), Barry Humphries (Dame Edna, Finding Nemo) and Eric Bana (Munich, The Other Boleyn Girl). The film opened the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and received international accolades including the Grand Crystal Best Feature Animation, 2009 Annecy Animation Festival, Winner, Crystal Bear Special Mention, Berlinale Generation 14+, and Best Feature Animation, 2009 Stuttgart Animation Festival.

"The Embassy is pleased to continue our tradition of providing Filipinos the opportunity to experience Australian film excellence and learn more about Australian popular culture, history and contemporary values,” Ambassador Smith said.

The Australian film festival is now entering its eighth year. Separately, the Embassy has promoted Australian film through local film festival Cinemanila, including by supporting the visit of Cinemanila founder and director Amable ‘Tikoy’ Aguiluz to Australia in 2007.

The Australian film industry holds the distinction of producing the world’s first full length feature film, The Story of the Kelly Gang, in 1906.

The 8th Australian Film Festival will run from 26-28 November at Glorietta 4 Cinema 4, Makati City and 30 November- 5 December at SM City Davao. For information screenings and masterclasses, visit

Mayor names new Public Safety Officer (http://www.dailymirror.ph/Nov-2010/11232010/front2.html)
BY DIANA LHYD SUELTO AND EDITHA Z. CADUAYA

Mayor Sara Dutere appointed Davao City Overland Transport Terminal chief Magno Adalin as the new Davao City Public Safety Officer.

On November 24 and 25, Adalin will conduct the Anti-Terror Forum, being the first order of Duterte.

Adalin also a city security consultant would head the Public Safety Command Center (PSCC).

Duterte tasked him to coordinate with the Davao City Police Office (DCPO), Task Force Davao (TFD) and other law enforcement agencies to ensure peace and order in the city.

Adalin will supervise and control all personnel under the civil security unit, city government mobile patrols issued to the police, coordinate with the barangay tanods, handle the security plan for the city government, and handle the security data and information for the city government.

Adalin in an interview said he appreciates the trust and confidence of the mayor on him and vowed to work hard in keeping the city safe.

“It’s a tough job, but I will do my best to perform the task as expected by the people and the city government,” he said.

He said his first priority as public safety officer is to submit an action plan to the mayor on how the PSCC would approach criminality in the city.

Adalin said he would use a comparative statistic model to help determine where the crimes are often committed and focus on these areas.

The DOT statistics in the last 3 years can show the growth pattern and made even Cagayan de Oro as the 4th most favored destination in the Philippines. With White Water Rafting, Dahilayan Zip Line and Bukidnon Farm Tours and Camiguin Island visit as the top market producers.

Davao City along with Metro Manila, Cebu, Boracay and Camarines Sur are the top 5 tourist destination in the Philippines.. CDO isn't even included in the top 16.... Camiguin is not CDO and is another island.

Mindanao IPs, RainTrust (http://www.dailymirror.ph/Nov-2010/11232010/loc2.html)
agree to preserve environment
BY JUDY QUIROS

Various tribal groups in Mindanao recently signed partnership with Peace laureate and RainTrust founder David Plattner to protect their ancestral domain from environment destructions.

Plattner, along with RainTrust country director Jonathon Bentley Stevens went to Malungon, Sa-rangani and New Bataan, Compostela Valley last Thursday and signed the agreement with the indigenous peoples (IPs) in the area that the preserve and protect biological diversity and productivity in their properties identified in their certificate of ancestral domain titles (CADT).

At a press conference recently in Davao City, Plattner said RainTrust recognizes the most brilliant individuals around the world “working toward the attainment of peace and respect for human life and dignity.”

CADT is part of the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (IPRA) of 1997. It recognizes the rights of Lumads to their right to ancestral domain and lands, right to self-governance and empowerment.

Plattner, an American citizen, also flew to the Philippines, Wednesday last week to formally receive the Gusi Peace Prize award in the field of environment and biodiversity at the Philippine International Convention Center. He is the founder of RainTrust, an environmental organization created in 2004 in New York City.

Dario Lasib, a B’laan chieftain in Malungon said their partnership with Rain Trust would also bring economic development in their community, a change they have been waiting, he sadded.

Under the agreement RainTrust will provide conservation and development funds while the IPs protect the their properties and guard the forests and its biological diversity.

Stevens for his part clarified that RainTrust has no control over the properties of the Lumads’ properties covered by Certrificate of Ancestral Domain Title (CADT).

Lumads will report to the organization if they hear a hint of tree being cut for timber. RainTrust would serve as back up as they would bring the attention of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) and, if possible, President Aquino if they receive reports from the uplands, Plattner said.

RainTrust targets to restore 230,000 renewable energy trees and replant 500,000 acres within deforested areas in Mindanao.

Cebu was established in 16th century while Davao was established in 18th century. Cebu is the oldest city in the Philippines. There was no Commonwealth then thus chartering of both cities became possible in the early 1930s.

Why is there no skyrises in Davao City? Simple, nobody built one.

So where are u in Metro Manila today. Would you be able to join us in the grand SSC Philippines meet or any of the meets here in Metro Manila? Are u truly here in Metro Manila? Let's meet.
