DexterTexter January 28th, 2011, 09:01 AM The Notable Restos of 2008
Well, since I also write about food in this blog, I am going to sum up the most notable dining experiences I had in the Philippines for this year. As you may notice, I don't call them the best restaurants, since being best is so relative. So, I'm just listing down 8 of the most intriguing, buzz worthy and best tasting. These are the restaurants that created a stir in my frantic search for the best dining experiences. So here goes:
http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/9872/image133k.jpg (http://img513.imageshack.us/i/image133k.jpg/)
1. Ola Espana (Cebu and Davao)
I started with an entry from the South. 2008 was filled with trips to Cebu and Davao, and I just had to savor all the restaurants I could visit in these cities. Ola Espana definitely hit me well, with its coziness and simple yet memorable dishes. Yes, it's a Spanish restaurant, but they serve Italian fare as well. Try the Paella Valenciana and the Lengua.
2. Sala Bistro (Greenbelt 3, Makati City)
This is a given. One of my favorite restaurants, Sala, decided to put up a more casual atmosphere to serve up their sophisticated menu. Sala Bistro is a great place to splurge without feeling your pockets. My favorites include their Rocket Salad and the Chilean Sea Bass.
3. Cicou at Hotel Celeste (Arnaiz Road, Makati City)
Another new French bistro in town, and one of the most hyped about. I was able to taste La Cabane just a few steps away, but I found the menu of La Cabane a little boring for me. What got me in Cicou was the way they presented their stuff. The menu looked interesting, but I think it wasn't translated to perfection, but nevertheless, it was above average. I love their service, though I am not quite happy with the interiors. The desserts were excellent as well.
4. Market Cafe at the Hyatt Hotel and Casino (Malate, Manila)
We held an event in Hyatt, and our generous account manager from the hotel treated us to a lunch buffet at the Market Cafe. I love the fact that it's a small place, unlike Spiral, where you are bombarded by choices. Here the selection is complete, but not overflowing. I also love the fact that the buffet comes with unlimited drinks which you can conveniently get from their chillers. The service is great, and the chefs are willing to cook you up special dishes upon request (which I do often in buffets). Oh, and did I say the drinks include beer and wine?
5. C Italian Dining (Angeles City, Pampanga)
Did I just start my pilgrimage to C Italian this year? I couldn't remember honestly, but I have been back to this fine fine italian restaurant 4 times this year, and each visit still made me eager. I just told everyone it's the best Italian restaurant in the country, beating even Le Opera, considering all the factors like ambience and experience. The experience sealed the deal. Le Opera is a fine dining restaurant par excellence, but it didn't had the charm that I keep searching for in C. Anyway, I love their Paniza and the now unavailable Mushroom and Seafood Risotto (I hope they bring it back). My advice, bring friends or family, as it's best to share the sumptuous feast with great company.
6. KIngdom (Angeles City, Pampanga)
Well, since we're in Clark still, let's go to another new restaurant that has been stirring up some hype. Enter the Kingdom, located at the ground floor of the Marlim Mansions along MacArthur Highway. Established by Sau Del Rosario of Chelsea and M Cafe, Kingdom is a Thai restaurant that has modern and classy interiors that seem to make it out of place in a dodgy neighborhood in Angeles. The food mimic traditional Thai recipes though during our visit there, I was disappointed. It was probably because of having super high expectations, and having been exposed to great Thai restaurants in Thailand itself. Nevertheless, Kingdom is something to watch out for, and a reason for you to stopover in Clark when heading further North.
7. Cav (Bonifacio High Street, Fort Bonifacio, Taguig)
Now, I have never eaten for lunch or dinner in Cav, even though I've been there several times. I have tasted their entire dessert menu though, and I can attest to the glorious euphoria from a bite of their Valrhona Cake. Like everyone else, I got into the wine and cheese affairs, and Cav for me is the best place for that.
8. Myron's Place (Greenbelt 5, Makati City)
Lastly, the restaurant I thought I wouldn't like. Myron's Place didn't interest me at first, as it was a steak house, and it was a new branch of the one in Rockwell. I just don't like branches. However, in that gold mine (meaning expensive) strip of restaurants at the garden area of Greenbelt 5, I found Myron's Place to be the best. Felix and Zuni made me feel I was robbed, while Kai I thought lost its grandeur when it moved. So Myron's stood out, for its succulent selection of meat presented with class. Each dish that was served to us were gorgeous and delicious as well.
***
It was difficult to come up with a list since I have been to several restaurants this year. These were the ones that I remember, because when I remember a place, it means it made an impact on me (I have a lousy memory). I'm sad that not one restaurant in A. Venue made my list, as I kept coming back to taste all their offerings. The only one I would mention is Artina and Fluke.
Some of the honorable mentions also include the newest Persian/Indian resto in town, Kebab Factory in the Atrium in Megamall and Fish Out of Water, which redeemed itself from being one of the worst after my first dining experience there. I would also like to mention Alexa's Deli along dela Costa in Makati, Picobello in Davao and Candy's in Cagayan de Oro.
***
Thus, with that, I also want to mention my WORST dining experience last year - ArAma Cafe, an organic restaurant in Serendra. The food tasted cheap and lacked any flavor and being organic is not an excuse. We literally had a 20 minute dinner, got the bill and left. No wonder we were the only customers in a bustling Saturday night. Sad.
Several restaurants line up my list for this month. Here are some of them:
1. Purple Feet (Wine Depot, N.Reyes, Makati City)
2. 145 Fahrenheit (Il Terrazo, Tomas Morato, QC)
3. Hacienda (Transcomm Center, Frontera Verde, Pasig beside Tiendesittas)
4. Persian Square (MC Home Depot, Ortigas Center)
5. Muruve (MC Home Depot, Ortigas Center)
6. 1521 (Shaw Blvd, Mandaluyong)
Hope to taste them by January ends. Till then, have a sumptuous new year!

THE Department of Social Welfare and Development will finally implement the Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services (Kalahi-Cidss) in urban communities starting this year.
Social Welfare Assistant Secretary Camilo G. Gudmalin told the reporters after the consulation with the city government and the civil society groups on the program at Marco Polo Hotel yesterday that the agency will pilot-test the project in selected areas.
There will be one in National Capital Region, Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. At present, we are still in the consulation phase on what communities should be the pilot areas.
It would be a tedious selection,” he said.
In Mindanao, the agency is choosing the pilot area of the project among Davao City, Zamboanga City, Cagayan de Oro City, Koronadal City and Butuan City.
Data from the National Statistical Coordination Board in 2008, says Davao City had a poverty incidence of 4.94 percent, 15. 50 percent in Cagayan de Oro City and 16.18 percent in Koronadal City.
Gudmalin explained that the plan is to implement the project in urban areas because there are still poor communities in these areas. This is also part of the move of the agency to expand the reach of the project which has been implemented in rural areas since 2003.
The agency said earlier that the program is a community-driven development project that aims to empower community people through their enhanced participation in local governance and poverty alleviation projects in the locality.
The identification will be finalized after the creation of the operations manual which provides the targets and criteria as suggested during the country-wide consulations.
Maria Loreto Padua, World Bank task team leader of Kalahi-Cidss, said the implementation of the project would be in partnership with civil society groups, non-government organization and the local government units.
“We have seen good results on the implementation of the program in rural areas. Now, we would like to expand in the urban areas as there are still pockets of poverty in these communities,”she said.
Under the mechanism of the project, communities that are its beneficiaries are not only allowed to contribute for its implementation but are empowered as they are the ones that identify their problems, provide with the solutions and implement the sub-projects.

Citi opens wealth management center (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/business/citi-opens-wealth-management-center)
CONFIDENT on the potential of the Davao market, Citibank (Citi) opened Friday its first wealth management banking center outside of Metro Manila.
Located at Citibank Savings Davao branch at the Ground Floor of Philamlife Bldg. on Rizal street, Citigold is expected to provide its clients access to a wide range of products and services, with exclusive benefits of global banking.
"Citigold is a one-stop financial shop manned by a wealth management team who builds and sustains relationship with our clients -- helping them attain their financial aspirations," Citi country head Sanjiv Vohra said during a press briefing before the formal opening of the center.
He said the opening of the first-ever Citigold branch outside the nation's capital reaffirms the company's commitment to help boost the country's economy in terms of wealth management and banking service.
"This is the fourth Citigold that we opened. The three others are all in Metro Manila. We will be opening the 5th branch soon, also in Manila," Vohra said.
He said the introduction of Citigold is part of Citi's thrust to make accessible world class banking products and services to clients around the country.
He said they are targeting the upper bracket of the market, as acquiring a Citigold account needs an initial deposit of P4 million with Citibank Savings.
"Citigold is one of the most successful brands of Citi in Asia Pacific, where we are widely acknowledged as the financial partner of choice by the affluent market. We are confident that with our clients' loyal support, we can replicate that success here in Davao, a key area of growth for us," Vohra said.
For his part, Citibank Savings president Tonet Itchon said Citibank Savings is one of Citi's biggest and most successful investments in the Philippines.
"By introducing Citigold in our portfolio of services, we're responding to the growing needs of our clientele and reaching out to more customers in the provinces," he said.
Citigold wealth management director Judith Go said with Citigold, they can work closely with clients in achieving their financial goals, at the same time providing them with access to "our vast network of global resources."
She said when one opens a Citigold account, one can get the services of an entire wealth management team, composed of experts and professionals, who will assist the account holder to better manage his financial portfolio.
The team, she said, will assist account holders in their day-to-day banking transactions, offering a range of investment tools and products suitable to their needs, risk profile and time horizon.
"We will continue to assist our clients in taking adavantage of market opportunities and assist them in their banking needs," Go said.
Apart from the Wealth Management Team, Citigold also presents Citibank Savings customers in Davao a host of exclusive privileges that include: access to best-in-class wealth planning and world-class products and services to help them find the right financial product suited to their needs; access to relevant and timely research and analysis on global markets from Citi's pool of financial specialists around the globe; and offshore referral service to give them access to products and services that are exclusively available through Citi's global affiliates.
Citigold also makes it possible for Citibank Savings clients in Davao to enjoy preferential rates on time deposit accounts, foreign currency exchange and other banking transactions, as well as access to global banking privileges, such as emergency cash advance, preferential rates on foreign currency exchange and International SOS service. Citibank Savings Davao customers also get timely updates on their accounts through the various channels made available for them: 24-hour banking access through the ATM, Citigold Hotline 995-1777, or via Citibank Online at www.citibank.com.ph. They also enjoy waived annual fees on their Citi credit cards.
While in Davao, Vohra also led the turnover ceremonies for Citi's school desks donation to Matina Aplaya Elementary School and Mabini National High School in the city.
The donation was in support of the late President Corazon Aquino's outreach program in the provinces.
In line with the program, Citi has donated to date over 1,100 school desks around the country.

Davao City is 1st Citigold Center outside Manila (http://www.dailymirror.ph/Jan-2011/Jan292011/biz1.html)
BY JUDY QUIROS
Citi, a financial partner of the affluent market in the world has named Davao City as its first Citigold center, outside Metro Manila.
Citigold is the newest world-class banking product introduced by Citi around the world.
Citigold Davao launched yesterday at the Citibank Savings Davao Branch is the fourth Citigold Center in the Philippines, the other three are currently in Metro Manila.
Citi Country Head Sanjiv Vohra at a press conference yesterday at The Marco Polo, Davao said, they see a big potential market in Davao City. “The Davao market is ready,” he said.
He said the Citi team has prepared a period of one year for the Citygold Davao opening in terms of studying its economic indicators, its people and the training of personnel to man the center.
“We did a lot of homework before the invest-ment,” Vohra said.
He said Citi is confident that with the loyal support of its clients around the world, “we can replicate that success here in Davao, a key area of growth for us.”
Citibank Savings president Tonet Itchon said they are very proud and happy to bring Citigold, the world’s iconic brand to Davao.
According to Aneth Lim, Citi Corporate Affairs Director, after a year-long preparation before yesterday’s launching, Citi has confirmed that Davao can be considered “Citigold client.”
For one to qualify the tagline “Citigold client” , she or he has to have a total deposit of P4million.
Lim admitted with such a huge deposit, Citigold is indeed designed for the upscale or affluent market.
She is amenable that Davao City can be considered an affluent market being named as the fourth Citigold center in the entire country and the first outside Metro Manila.
Itchon said Citigold is “a very high standard, but we are confident we will achieve it.”
Itchon said that the people of the Citibank Savings Bank branch is another reason why Citi chose Davao as a Citigold Center.
He said the commitment of the people in the Citibank Savings Davao Branch headed by Branch Manager Mito Aviles, now promoted as vice president of Citibank contributed to the establishment of a Citigold Center in Davao City.
Vohra said with the impressive growth acquired by Citibank Savings Davao Branch, Citi is expecting a lot of Citigold clients basically from the upper segment in Davao.
Globally, Citibank and Citigold posted $10.3 billion net income during the fourth quarter of 2010, Vohra said. Of this, Asia contributed 25 to 35 percent share, he said.

DAVAO CITY, Jan. 28 — Stock traders in this city have organized themselves recently into a group called the Davao Stock Traders Association or DASTRADA.
Jerson Remo, a local businessman who attended the Third Stock Trading Forum over the weekend said the group agreed that it was necessary for them to get together regularly and learn from each other.
“Buying and selling stocks in the stock market can be very tricky, that’s why it’s good to meet regularly, exchange notes and learn from each other,” says Remo who was elected interim vice president of DASTRADA.
The 10 participants in the third stock trading forum also elected a veteran 67-year old American stock trader Ken Spanskie as the interim president of the first-ever stock traders association in this city.
Spanskie, who had been trading stocks for a long time in the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), said he enjoyed meeting the new stock traders in Davao after accepting the interim position as the first president of the stock market group.
“It’s vital for us as stock traders to get together and learn from each other’s mistakes in the stock market,” Spanskie said.
The US stock trader said the stock trading seminar he attended here in Davao was “terrific” and had an “enjoyable time” joining the lively discussions with Davao traders in the trading of Philippine stocks, picking stock winners, making mistakes and cutting losses.
Spanskie said he is very keen on investing and trading stocks of local companies in the Philippine stock exchange, expressing optimism in the growth of this country’s economy in the coming years.
Organized by the Pinoy Stock Traders blog www.pinoy777.wordpress.com, the Fourth Stock Trading Forum is now being planned tentatively for February 27 (Sunday) at My Hotel in Davao, according to stock analyst Jamil Ahmed who assisted in organizing the previous three trading seminars.
New participants this week have already sent their names to contact number 09084699301 asking the organizers to include them in the new list for the coming fourth stock trading seminar. (PNA)

Davao school offers English language course to Chinese nationals
by Prix D. Banzon
DAVAO CITY, Jan. 28 (PIA) – The JIB Foundation has recently inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with iStudy Brainmaster Philippines, Inc. (iSBPI) to open English language course to Chinese nationals this year which is hoped to pave way to more businesses and tourists arrivals in the city.
The signing of agreement was led by Joji Ilagan Bian of the JIB Foundation and Rodolfo A. Lee, president of iStudy Brainmasters Philippines, Inc. on January 25, 2011 at the Royal Mandaya Hotel, this city.
Bian said it is a significant partnership with Brainsmaster as it would bring to Davao City almost 10,000 Chinese nationals who would study English as a Second Language (ESL) within the next five to ten years.
She said they intend to start this by August 2011 and pilot it with about 100 students.
iSBPI president Rodolfo A. Lee said their company will fund the program and will market and scout for students. The company envisions itself as a pioneer of the pre-paid, pre-funded investment vehicle for the internalization of the Philippine education, a leading provider of cross-border education services in the Philippines, he said.
He cited similar project they launched in Indonesia where some 250 corporations invested in the business, saying they are looking at an estimated investment of P1 billion pesos.
Our estimated number of students for the next five years is at 55,000 and that the program is also open to India, Indonesia and Malaysia, Lee stated.
The ESL is a requirement for non-English speaking students to qualify for higher education and these students will be diagnosed on their level competence and clustered according to their knowledge and skills and will be grouped according to competency.
There will be 20 students per class and seven contact hours per day consisting of lectures, laboratories and individualized/tutorial. Classes will be integrated with Personality Development and Values Formation, guided individual exercises, experiential learning exercises, creative and artistic modes, practical lessons and functional literacy, business situations and cultural activities and opportunity for communication with English-speaking communities.
Bian meanwhile said that the prospective students have high-end requirements where some would require deluxe accommodation.
"In my case, I am tying this up for a starter with two hotels including the transportation, laundry and other basic requirements," she said.
On the other hand, the tourism industry and the business sector in Davao welcome this development. It is estimated that with the projected number of students to come for the English language course, there would also be increases in visitor arrivals as parents of these students would come to visit and check on them.
Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCCII) president Dr. Marilou Monteverde said “we get more benefits when more people are coming to Davao City and this tie up will also lead to more economic activities between the Philippines and China.”
City director Teololu Pasawa of the Department of Trade and Industry on the other hand also assured their support for this endeavor.
Meanwhile, Susan Palad, vice president for Tourism Congress representing Mindanao, said they see this undertaking of JIB and iSBPI as the birth of "Educatours" both linking education to tourism.
Regional Director Art Boncato of the Department of Tourism 11 (DOT-11) said the China market is really big and this opens up a huge door to tourism, saying that this direction is in line with that of DOT's to lure the China market to visit the Philippines.
In Davao alone, he said Chinese visitors made a good showing last year as they come fourth with US as the top visitors followed by South Korea, then Japan. (PNA11/Prix D. Banzon)

DAVAO CITY – The local economy in Davao City is eyeing the influx of local tourists as it currently faces a great challenge in inviting huge investments despite the President's open skies policy for Mindanao, Mayor Sara Z. Duterte-Carpio said recently.
Speaking to reporters recently, Carpio said, this summer, three big groups will hold their conventions in the city.
"There will be some 1,500 participants from an international organization, Lions Club; 5,000 participants from Mason, Asian-Pacific; and, 7,000 from the Philippine Medical Association," said Duterte.
The city has been promoted as destination for meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) aside from the existing Lakbay Aral. (Mick M. Basa)

rodincouch January 30th, 2011, 12:08 AM Sweet victory for AdDU girls (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/sports/sweet-victory-addu-girls)
UNDER a driving rain and playing in a muddy field against rugged and physical opponents, the Ateneo de Davao University (adDU) soccer girls played with great resolve to overcame all kinds of adversity and add another one to their collection of championship trophies.
This time, it was the 12-under crown of the recent 8th Rizal Football Association (Rifa) Cup International Football Festival that's in the bag for these remarkable girls.
A 2-1 win over arch-rival Victory Christian International School-Philippine Army Team in a rain-hit finals at the Ateneo de Manila in Loyola Heights, Quezon City capped another triumphant campaign of the Ateneo team under coach Reynalyn Ranada-Ravanes and Analou Ingles.
"We were really happy and blessed for the victory that we achieve. There were a lot of good teams that we competed against. It gave us some good exposure and experience," Ravanes said.
The victory came even sweeter for it was accomplished over the same team that dealt them a very painful defeat for the crown in last year's edition.
The Victory Christian International School had ruled the girls 12-under division for two straight year beginning in 2009 and came into the tournament the solid pick to claim its third crown.
That was not to be.
The Ateneo girls came prepared this time and played excellent football all throughout the tournament. On the way to the finals, the team beat San Beda, Mirriam College, Poveda and Philippine Academy of Sakya, which is also from Davao City.
Bea Panganiban and Joanah Adao scored the goals for Ateneo in the championship match, which was close all the way and was marred by rugged defense by both teams.
Panganiban broke the ice in the first half after following up a shot from Patricia Francisco. But, VCIS countered before the half ended with a goal of its own for a 1-1 score.
In the second half Ateneo displayed excellent passing to negate the rugged defense of the opposing team. The well-executed attack paid off with five minutes remaining when Adao received a center pass from Inah Rosales and booted home the winning goal.
When it was all over, the Ateneo girls celebrated on the field and cried in joy.
"After the game some of the girls cried and I also almost shed tears of joy. This was a result of our handwork and willingness to win," Ravanes said.
The winning team is also composed of Mica Corrales, Bea Dongon, Kyra Noelle S. Paronda, Thea Pilay, Drew Datumanong, Sana-a Jikiri, Angel Kyra Gsbinete, Allyn Ravanes and Rizalene Francisco.
Winning is nothing new to these Ateneo girls. They have been ruling tournament after tournament not only in Davao, but also outside of the city every time they have the chance to compete.
The latest triumph may not be the first for these fighting Ateneo girls. And judging from their style of play and determination, this certainly won't be their last.

eflex January 30th, 2011, 03:05 AM Solid waste management
Litterbugs beware. Sooner than expected, city authorities will begin penalizing anyone caught indiscriminately throwing away wastes and other garbage matters in public places like streets and plazas. This, as soon as the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) completes the rules and guidelines governing the implementation of the Solid Waste Management ordinance.
CENRO chief Joseph Dominic Felizarta expects the implementation of the anti-littering measure to go full blast by the middle of next month. The ordinance punishes violators with six months imprisonment and a fine of P3,000, depending on the gravity of the offense.
The measure requires the segregation of biodegradable from non-biodegradable waste materials in homes and offices. The ordinance mandates the dumping of biodegradable wastes in compost areas at the back of houses. For those without compost areas in their homes, the biodegradable garbage should be thrown at the compost site designated and managed by the barangay.
To ensure full and strict implementation of the ordinance, CENRO has organized an Anti-Littering Team composed of 40 members tasked to monitor people throwing away their wastes anywhere and not in garbage bins. The city generates an average of 500 tons of garbage daily 62 percent of which is biodegradable or can be converted into compost.
Following the doctrine that charity begins at home, Mayor Sara Duterte issued a memorandum circular mandating all city government workers, including members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod, to practice waste segregation. As soon the implementation of the SWM ordinance goes full blast, all violators will be penalized, including government officials and barangay captains and barangay council members.
Amid the frenzy in the preparations, it is hoped that the implementation of the SWM ordinance will not be a ningas cogon or fly-by-night undertaking. Observers have noted that although it has been about 10 years since its enactment, the anti-jaywalking ordinance remains a toothless tiger due to lack of effort on the part of concerned city authorities to implement it strictly without fear or favor.

Davao ready for MICE, says DoT-11
January 26, 2011, 3:47pm
DAVAO CITY, Philippines (PNA) – This city is now ready to host the Marketing, Incentives, Conferencing and Exhibits (MICE) in 2012, Department of Tourism Region 11 (DoT-11) Director Art Boncato announced.
According to Boncato, the city is capable of hosting the most sought-after event of the tourism industry and is ready for MICE as it has all the factors needed to host conventions, meetings, and exhibits.
Earlier, Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio announced that they already manifested their intention for MICE come September, 2012, even as she stressed that her administration’s priority is tourism and investments.
Boncato said the City Mayor’s Office had furnished them a copy of the city government’s communication to the DoT in Manila that they are interested and capable of hosting the MICE next year.
Participants to MICE is expected to be about 300 owners of companies, chief executive officers (CEOs), and exhibitors, and the facilities and needs of these executives and officers are available here, he said.
“All that these players are looking for can be found here – from souvenir shops to accommodations, attractions and access for tourist spots with numerous natural destinations.
“The hotels’ food and beverage departments are of world class standards," he said.
He said the DoT is working with the city government here with regards to the department’s program for MICE by carrying the message “Let’s Meet in Davao.”
This, he said, is to promote aggressively this city as MICE destination to get those markets interested in meetings and conventions in order to finally develop linkage with investors that would create bigger facilities for conventions and events.
At present, Davao Region is an advantage because it sits in the MICE Advisory Council together with the National Capital Region, and Region 6.
Among the cities that already hosted the MICE were Manila and Subic, and Cebu City will be hosting it this year.

Six karatedo players from Davao City will be seeing action in the 4th SMA Cup set on March 3 to 8 at the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) Indoor Sport Center in Kuala Lumpur.
They are Kassandra Danielle Barnes, Oona Ysabelle Barnes and Manuel Sy of the Davao Christian High School; Arthur Lao III of the Holy Cross of Davao College, Christian Gil Tarnate of Precious Interational and Herma Panal.
All of them are members of the Association for the Advancement of Karatedo (AAK) Davao Branch under head instructor and coach Rommel Tan.
“They will all compete in the age-group category except for Panal, who will be play in the senior’s division,” said Tan at the weekly SCOOP Sports Round Table Talk held at Tagboan Lounge and sponsored by Royal Mandaya Hotel, Beefit Gym, High Ponds Beach Resort and the Stadium Buffet Restaurant and Sports Lounge.
Lao won a silver and bronze medal in last year’s Gojukai Asia Pacific Championships held in Singapore, while Kassan-dra pocketed two silvers in the girl’s kata and kumite events in the same prestigious tournament.
Jhon Albert Albarico, Carmela Marie Estarija and Claudia Villaluna, who all won the gold in Singapore, will not be able to join the team due to their hectic schedules in school.
“Priority pa rin namin ang pag-aaral ng mga bata and their academics,” said Tan, who will also be joining the World Karatedo Federation (WKF) Technical Seminar for Judges/Referees in Malaysia.
AAK Davao will be joining the Philippine delegation together with the karatekas from AAK Honbo Dojo of SM Megamall under Anthony Lim, a former RP team member, SEA Games champion and Asian Games medallist who’s now a licensed WKF world referee-judge.
“After Malaysia, we will proceed to Singapore to compete in the 2nd Silent Knight Karatedo Open Championships on March 10 to 14,” Tan said. Tan, however, said that their team still needs sponsors for their trip. “We are still looking for sponsors and we hope that we can get it,” he said.
The AAK Davao team, which are only supported by the parents, TKS Petron under Engr. Mike and Esther Te and the Philippine Sports Commission for their travel tax exemption, is currently training regularly at the Beefit Gym atop Elle’s Pension along Mt. Apo St. Lito Delos Reyes

ATENEO de Davao University's explosive striker Joana Marie Adao was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the recent Rizal Football Association (Rifa) Cup International Football Festival at the Ateneo de Manila in Loyola Heights, Quezon City.
The individual award handed out to Adao as the best performer in the tournament made it a double celebration for Ateneo, which also on the championship in the 12-under category over the Victory Christian International School-Philippine Army.
Adao scored the winning goal for Ateneo with five minutes remaining in the titular showdown that was played under a driving rain and sparked a joyous celebration for the Ateneo squad.
With the win, Ateneo de Davao dethroned Victory Christian International School and avenged the loss it suffered to the same team in last year's edition of the Rifa Cup.
Adao was also named MVP when Ateneo won its 4th straight crown in the 12-under division of the Alaska Cup last year, scoring all four goals in the finals. (CRAM)

rodincouch January 31st, 2011, 12:26 AM Sabaldan: Vice Mayor Duterte supports 1st RP Open Tchoukball Championship
(http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/sports/sabaldan-vice-mayor-duterte-supports-1st-rp-open-tchoukball-championship)
COACH Gary Visitacion is grateful and showing an aura of great confidence with Vice-Mayor Rody Duterte supporting the Ist Philippine Open Tchoukball Championship held for three days from its simple but well-organized opening ceremony last Friday to Sunday's finals at the refurbished Davao City Recreation Center.
Duterte sent Councilor Nilo Abellera to represent him and the city council in the elaborate opening ceremony attended by no less than the president of the International Tchoukball Federation, Chris Wang of Taiwan, from the same country that is currently world number one in the new game that had its origin from Switzerland.
Our boys in the 18 and under category clustered as the Black and White teams had their first taste of a full blown event of a running game losing both opening bouts to another visiting RP national training pool from Bacolod with only the RP Davao men's team preventing a sweep from the Ilongos in the 3-game opening.
The participation of the teams from Singapore will put to a test the progress of our teams in the ball game that we have the opportunities to observe during practice sessions in the open spaces of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes now blossoming into one of Davao City's lively Asean athletic events. Singapore is currently number two in Asia and third in international ranking.
A precision, well-executed, parade of colors by the special cadets of the Holy Cross of Davao College Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation signaled the start of one of the rare national events held here.
Malaysia and Singapore had also sent delegations to observe but only Singapore teams men and 18 and under compose of 12 players each team will be playing in the tournament which is also seen as an organizational test of the newly organized Philippine Tchoukball Federation, one of the first national sport organizations established in Davao with the ICBL-popular Gary Visitacion as president and another Davao-based official Blair Cuares as vice president.
It used to be always Manila-to-the-different-cities in terms of organizational leadership and Visitacion change that complexion of Davao taking the lead role with its application as an official national sports association still pending approval before the Philippine Olympic Committee.
According to Visitacion, Blair and Coach Dan Peñano during the weekly Scoop forum at the Royal Mandaya Hotel, the first ever Tchoukball Philippine Open will open new opportunities for Davao to prove its capabilities of hosting big sports and travel events.
In the evening of the same day, we had the taste of the good and courteous services of the newest hotel in town, the Pinnacle at Sta. Ana Avenue, which is also seen as another test of the hosting and organizational talent of Visitacion and company.
The atmosphere at the well-appointed ballroom of the hotel at the second floor was simple but cultural and festive in the welcome dinner hosted by the city government of Davao to honor the visiting teams from Singapore and international officials of the world federation from Malaysia and Taiwan.
Councilor Edgar Ibuyan represented the city mayor as guest speaker where she extolled the unique features of Tchoukball as an athletic but non-physical sport. Tchoukball, which is played in three quarters at ten minutes per break, does not allow bothering or molesting the team on the offensive.
True to its non-contact features, scrimmages and passionately heated situations had rarely taken place during the games. In fact, last Friday's very competitive opening games were zero-injury.

Waste segregation: Even birds can do it

BIRDS can help educate Dabawenyos on proper waste management and segregation, a veterinarian who has made a name in conservation circles said.
Among the challenges that the city is facing right now is how to educate and inculcate in its residents the proper way to manage their garbage and to practice solid waste segregation.
But for Dr. Roberto Puentespina Jr., corporate social responsibility officer of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Incorporated (DCCCII), proper waste education can be done through bird shows, like what they are now doing at the Malagos Garden Resort in Malagos, Calinan.
Aside from the regular Sunday shows, a new version of which has been introduced on Sunday, Puentespina has been conducting bird shows all over the country.
He is also advocating awareness on climate change and disaster management through these bird shows.
"Birds are good partners to promote environmental projects and endeavors," Puentespina said.
For their shows in Quezon City last year, and from their various sponsors, they were able to donate to the city a P7-million facility that caters to rescued animals.
Puentespina said their bird shows seek to popularize environmental concerns. Thus, even the performing birds are given ample rest and care.
They only stage these shows every other quarter to allow the birds to rest and regain their energy.
"Importante man pud nang naga-perform ang mga langgam kay para dili pud sila ma depress kung naka-kulong lang sila (Allowing the birds to perform is also a good way to keep them from being depressed from doing nothing inside their cages)," he added.
The birds in his bird shows have been either rescued or surrendered by former owners who can no longer afford their upkeep and yet can no longer survive in the wild. (Jereco O. Paloma)

DAVAO CITY, Philippines (PIA) – Foreign scientists figured out an unusual behavior of the over two million fruit bats that find shelter inside the Monfort Bat Cave, on the Island Garden City of Samal in Davao del Norte.
Studying the behavior of bats in the said cave, Dr. Rick Sherwin of the Christopher Newport University observed a significant number of pregnant bats in the colony.
“Their behavior is so unusual in such a way that even if the females are still pregnant, they already start mating for the next pregnancy,” the scientist said.
Sherwin is among several foreign scientists who are currently conducting their research and studies at the Monfort Bat Cave.
The scientists believed that such unique behavior that surfaced just recently is important to the reproduction cycle of the said endangered mammal.
This pushed them to buckle down and further immerse in the area to address the issue of extinction of fruit bats.
“First, we need to start finding new homes for these two million. We’ll study on how to return the condition of nearby caves,” he said.
Sherwin cited the initiative of the United States and Canada in building an artificial habitat, a temporary man-made shelter, where these bats can settle for awhile.
They hope to find indicators why these bats love to live at Monfort Cave while most bats left their previous homes. Studies showed that most bat caves have been emptied recently.
The team is also looking for ways on how to harvest bats’ wastes known as bat guano so it can be used as organic fertilizer.
Norma Monfort, owner of the bat cave, was handpicked by the Bat Conservation International to spearhead the first big kick-off event of the global celebration of the Year of the Bats.
Bat enthusiasts, scientists, and people from the academe from the various parts of the world joined the Philippines as this part of the country spent a week-long celebration filled with symposia, eco-tourism tours, and knowledge sharing.
Bat Conservation International executive director Nina Fyascione commended Monfort’s efforts of mainstreaming bat conservation by sharing her property and making it an eco-tourism estate where people all over the world can come and learn the life of the fruit bats.
“Years ago, we have been surrounded by myths and misconceptions about bats, that they are blind, they have rabies, and so many bad thoughts about them. Now, people get to appreciate the role of bats in our economy, in tourism,” she said.
Bats are considered fruit pollinators, they dispense seeds, and eat pests.
While in tourism, bats do play a significant role as well.
The Monfort Bat Cave has become a popular tourist destination in the Davao Region as it is only here that tourists witness the life of bats during daytime and their emergence during night.
The emergence of these fruit bats starts at 6 p.m. where they hunt for food as far as 50 kilometers away from their base and come home before midnight.
Monfort embraces the role as an ambassador of bat conservation. She clears out misconceptions about bats.
“People know little about bats because they are the animals of the night and the dark. But one thing that they symbolize is motherhood. They are the only mammal which both nurses its young while flying to hunt food,” she said.
Monfort urged more people to help her be the steward of the Monfort Eco-Tourism Estate.

Two big-ticket infra projects to be included in PPP program (http://www.mindanaotimes.net/?p=16966)
Written by: Fusilero , Kristianne
Monday, 31 January 2011
TWO PROPOSED projects from the region is now being considered to be included in the public-private partnership program of the administration, a top official of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) revealed.
NEDA director general Cayetano W. Paderanga Jr. said among the proposed projects are the creation of Davao Food Exchange Terminal in Toril and conversion of the Sta. Ana Wharf into an international harbor.
The terminal alone will feature a cold storage facility, a Bagsakan for fresh farm goods and spaces for rent for small and medium enterprises. It has been identified as the city government's priority project in the next three years and the Regional Development Councils priority infrastructure.
We will look forward on these projects, he said in a speech as read by Maria Lourdes D. Lim, regional director of the agency, during the 43rd Annual Installation of Officers & Trustees of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Inc. at Marco Polo Hotel on Friday.
He said other projects that are in the pipeline for endorsement are the improvement of the railways, water supply, irrigation systems, airports and public markets. He added that the creation of the power plants in various areas in the country are also being reviewed.
The Department of Budget and Management also approved an initial amount of P300 million to fund the feasibility study for the proposed projects.
In the previous year, some of the approved proposals are the expansion of Metro Rail Transit in Manila that would cost P70 billion, creation of a new airport in Bohol, P3.07 billion-Daraga International Airport and Puerto Princesa Airport that would cost P4.36 billion.
At least P15 billion from the Department of Public Works and Highways, Department of Transportation and Communication and Department of Agriculture will be allocated to jumpstart the approved projects under the program this year.
In the region, Lim said they are still gathering information from various local government units on the possible big-ticket projects.
Presently, only the creation of Davao Food Exchange Terminal and conversion of the Sta. Ana Wharf into an international harbor are currently being endorsed to the national agency.
So far, we have collected the proposals from Davao del Sur and Davao City. In Davao del Sur, they wanted to have flood-control projects while the city mostly proposed for the improvement of the tourism industry, she said.
She said they would finalize the proposal by next month.

Davao is an affluent market..This is precisely the reason why HSBC opened a branch here, not to mention other international banks like Maybank, China Trust and of course, Citibank Savings..

rodincouch February 1st, 2011, 02:13 AM Merrier Chinese New Year celebration: organizer (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/local-news/merrier-chinese-new-year-celebration-organizer)
THE Chinese community in Davao City will welcome the Year of the Golden Rabbit with a twist, as they expect thousands of guests and spectators to fill the gymnasium of Davao Central High School (DCHS) on J.P Laurel Avenue Wednesday night.
Jasper Huang, coordinator of this year's Chinese New Year celebration, said that compared to previous years, the public can expect a more festive and merrier celebration of the Chinese community in welcoming another year as they will be holding a foam party on the street.
Apart from that, the organizers also prepared activities inside the gym wherein the public is welcome to participate.
Local officials were also expected to grace the event, like Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte and the city councilors.
"Inside the venue, we have created a Chinese village wherein several restaurants and businesses, like Marco Polo, Emerald, Sen Ton Wan, and several others will showcase different Chinese dishes," Huang said.
Five of the city's Chinese schools will also join the celebration wherein pupils of these schools will perform some Chinese traditional dances and music for the audiences.
The organizers expect thousands of participants as the venue can accommodate as many as 3,000 people.
Wednesday's celebration will kick-off with a motorcade at 2 p.m., followed by a mass at 4 p.m., then a ceremonial walk to DCHS with Chinese' traditional dragon dance.
The rest of the evening stores various activities like the simulated fireworks display -- an audio-video presentation that depicts almost the actual live pyrotechnic display.

THE conquering Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) girls soccer players paid a courtesy call on Davao City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte at City Hall Monday morning.
Accompanied by their parents and wearing their traditional blue jersey, the Ateneo kids proudly presented to Mayor Duterte the championship trophy they won in the 8th Rizal Fooball Association (Rifa) Cup International Football Festival at the Ateneo de Manila in Loyola Heights, Quezon City last January 22-23.
The Ateneo girls had ruled the 12-under category of the prestigious tournament and also finished runner-up in the 14-under.
Team captain Mica Isabel Corrales and Bea Dongon led the trophy presentation to a beaming Duterte, who commended the girls for giving honor not only to their school but also to Davao City.
The players and their parents then had a grand time having their photos taken with the lady mayor and chatting with her for several minutes.
So happy was Mayor Duterte with the girls' achievement that she hosted a buffet lunch for them and their parents at Marco Polo Hotel.
The winning Ateneo team is set to compete in the prestigious Anza Soccer International Junior Cup 2011 in Singapore from May 21 to 22.
There, the Ateneo girls will be playing against teams from Thailand, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan and Australia.
The Anza event is one of South East Asia's best and biggest international youth football competition.

rodincouch February 1st, 2011, 02:24 AM Resort owners initiate netting of garbage in Davao Gulf shoreline (http://www.dailymirror.ph/Feb-2011/front4.html)
BY MAYA M. PADILLO
Resort owners yesterday donated nets to the City Mayor’s Office (CMO) as their way of helping preserve Davao Gulf.
Led by businessman Philip Dizon, who owns Maxima Aqua Fun in Samal, the group composed of Julie Rodriguez of Paradise Island Park and Beach Resort and Toshi Ozonawa of Kembali Coast donated more than five bundles of polypropylene nets.
The nets will be used to get garbage, specifically plastic, from households along the shorelines of Davao Gulf.
“Plastic is a major problem. The net will be put anywhere where it is practical,” Dizon said.
He said they are eyeing to net not around 10 kilometers of shoreline, including Davao River. The initial donation will cover only 300 meters.
“If you want to promote tourism, you have to fix the environment, We have to clean the Davao Gulf,” Dizon said.
Dizon said the nets will be put in the secondary post of the house two to three meters high from the ground.
The initiative will be replicated in Davao del Norte to be led by Vincent Floirendo, president of the council of barangay captains.
Dizon said he did a test of the nets last year at the shoreline of Barangay Agdao. Its success prompted him to continue the initiative with the partnership of the city government.
“This initiative should be maintained. I know this is not 100 percent effective but 80 percent effective is good enough,” he said.
“There will be endless donors for this, even environmentalists are welcome to donate,” he said.
He said it will need at least P200,000 for the netting of the whole 10 kilometer stretch.
Mayor Sara Duterte accepted the donation, saying the netting will help contain the garbage and prevent pollution of Davao Gulf.
She said the city will help put up the net and maintain it. The clean up will be performed by the barangays where the nettings are put up.
Sara said she is eyeing the shorelines of Isla Verde and Boulevard as initial areas for the netting.

Taboan will be attended by writers writing in the various Philippine languages as well as in English and by three international representatives. He said this year, the conference sessions, programs, and cultural activities will highlight regional literature in recognition of the many indigenous peoples of Mindanao
“Our intention is to make the focus of the Taboan different each year,” he said. Luzon and Visayas were in the limelight for the past two years. For 2011, he said, all eyes are on Mindanao.
Taboan is the contribution of the NCCA’s National Committee on Literary Arts (NCLA) to the celebration of the Philippine International Arts Festival (PIAF). This year’s Taboan marks the completion of the first circuit of the archipelago’s three major island groups.
The conference name was taken from the Cebuano word for “gathering” but the word Taboan also means ‘trading at the market place.’ And Taboan, de Ungria said, is precisely that for the Filipino writer.
“The festival allows writers to come together and learn from each other’s experiences and get updated on each other’s projects and the latest developments in the literary scene,” he said.
National artist for literature Bienvenido Lumbera is the keynote speaker for Taboan 2011.
The conference sessions are grouped into four major categories. These are native voices, literature and others, careers in writing and care and feeding of young writers. Sessions under native voices include spirits of the place: Local myths and folklore in literature, lumad literature in Mindanao, beyond borders: Globalizing local writing and literary criticism and native lite-rature.
Sessions under literature and others include lights! camera! action! Writing the screenplay, the painted word: visual art and literature, the sound of the word: Music and literature, and tag team writing: Collaborative literature. Sessions under careers in writing include come together under what flag? Writers and advocacies, writing below the belt: Erotica today, spit and polish: How to sell yourself in the writers market and what do writers really want, aber? Sessions under care and feeding of young writers include new fix: Writing flash, spec, teen and fan fiction, everybody wants to be A sudden poet! Guiding young writers to true poetry and Ako ang nagwagi! Winning literary contests.
De Ungria said satellite activities for Taboan will also be conducted in various parts of the country. De La Salle University is holding You Lovely People: A Tribute to Bienvenido Santos on his birth centenary on February 4 at the Marilen Gaerlan Conservatory of DLSU. There will also be poetry reading sessions titled Three nights of love poetry happening in three days and in three locations in Quezon City, February 7 at Mag: Net Café, February 8 at Conspiracy Bar and Café, and February 9 at the University of the Philippines Diliman.
Outside NCR, Tingog Cimarron: Harampangan sa Plaza Cimarrones (heroic voices: Face-to-Face at Plaza Cimarrones) is happening on February 6 and 7 at Plaza Cimarrones in Pili, Camarines Sur. Poetry readings and performances will be held on February 10 at UP Clark, in Pampanga and on February 18 at the Isabela National High School Quadrangle in Ilagan, Isabela. In time for Baguio’s Flower Festival, UP Baguio will be holding Panagbenga: Baguio Poetry Reading for Arts Month 2011 on February 24 in Baguio City.

Mindanao leaders push gov’t on nuclear option
DAVAO CITY -- Reeling from their bout in the first half of 2010 with hours-long daily power outages and facing a recurrence of the problem each year, Mindanao leaders are pressing the government to consider the development of nuclear power among its list of electricity sources other than steam.
Vicente T. Lao, chairman of the private sector-led Mindanao Electric Power Alliance, said in a statement that nuclear power is necessary to address the increasing demand for electricity in Mindanao. The alliance, consisting of business chambers in Mindanao’s regions, was formed last year when outages lasting as long as eight hours daily hit Mindanao for five months. The drought had left dry the dams that drive the hydro power plants, which in turn supply nearly half of the entire island’s electricity.
Luwalhati R. Antonino, chairperson of the Mindanao Development Authority, said separately that unless such alternative power sources are developed soon, Mindanao could face a power shortage of 483 megawatts (MW) in the next three years. The Web site of the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines yesterday showed that Mindanao had thin reserves of 216 MW despite rains. -- CQF

‘Green’ tech in Davao’s priority list
DAVAO CITY -- The city government will include "green" technology in its investment priorities list for this year, Jason C. Magnaye, head of the Davao City Investment Promotions Center, said in a recent interview.
Mr. Magnaye said the proposal is to cover companies that will employ the technology in their projects. "What we will do is to evaluate how much [expenditure] is in ‘green’ technology; the incentives will correspond to that investment," he said, citing as an example the use of solar panels in building projects.
The city offers incentives like exemption from payment of mayor’s permit and building permit fees, business sales tax and real property tax for two years, as well as assistance in business matching and search for suitable locations for projects. -- CQF

Proposed zoning law to include ‘key thrusts’ (http://www.mindanaotimes.net/?p=16990)
Written by: Fusilero , Kristianne

MAYOR Sara Z. Duterte-Carpio says she believes the bomb that exploded during her planned visit to Paquibato was intended for her. Joey Dalumpines
THE CITY government will incorporate its key thrusts in the proposed amendments to the zoning ordinance as it is planning to hold consultation on the proposal in March.
Roberto P. Alabado III, acting head of the City Planning and Development Office, said among the thrusts of the city government are to prioritize Information Technology and tourism industries, consider the issues on climate change and improve the transportation routes in the city.
“On focusing on the investment sectors, for instance, we would like to provide specific zones for business process outsourcing companies and tourism industries,” he said.
Although business process outsourcing and tourism are considered priority areas in the ordinance, Alabado said, the priority of the city government when it passed it in 1996 were agro-industrial and industrial zones as part of the Philippines 2000.
In planning to include the impact of climate change in the zoning ordinance, he said the city should identify the flood-prone and landslide prone areas to become as protected areas. He said the city government has already identified these areas.
In improving the transportation routes, he said they are considering on where to place their plan to have a bus rapid transport system.
The move to update the zoning ordinance was already proposed during the term of the previous council, but the councilors then decided to shelve because of the May 2010 elections.
The previous city council even created a technical working group to study proposed amendments to the ordinance. The group conducted eight consultations during the second half of 2009.
Among the recommendations by the technical working group were placing additional items such as People’s Park under Sec. 3 of Article IV of the ordinance. Another proposal was regulating the construction of gasoline stations, cemeteries and any form of underground tanks in protected areas.
“The Matina Shrine Hills was classified by the ordinance as “low density protected residential zone and any development, if allowed within this zone, must provide mitigating measures for slope protection as approved by the City Engineer’s Office.”
In July last year, the councilors revived anew proposal to amend the zoning ordinance by taking it under first reading and endorsing to the committee on rules, privileges and laws. The proposal is now being finalized by the technical working group.

I like the proposed zoning as it will be now appropriately done to meet the incoming challenges as well as tapping the potential of the City to be a complete destination. :)

rodincouch February 1st, 2011, 08:52 AM Davao gets boost from Chinese students studying English (http://www.dailymirror.ph/Feb-2011/biz1.html)
Mayor Sara Duterte yesterday said Davao City will get a big boost from the arrival of up to 10,000 Chinese students to Davao City and nearby areas to study English through the partnership of Manila-based investment corporation iStudy Brainmaster Philippines, Inc. and Aces Polytechnic College.
At a courtesy call made by both education investors to Sara last week, the mayor said the partnership is “a premium one” since aside from bolstering the education sector, it will also heighten tourism and investments.
iStudy Brainmaster Philippines, Inc. led by its president Rodolfo Lee and ACES Polytechnic College president and CEO Dr. Francisco P. de la Peña entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on January 24 in Panabo City.
ACES Polytechnic College is based in Panabo City but has branches in Davao City, Tagum City, and Nabunturan in Com-postela Valley Province.
Lee said bringing in between 5,000 and 10,000 Chinese students beginning this year and the next five years is better than bringing premium tourists who stay only up to two weeks in the place.
He said iStudy also made a similar MOU with the Joji Ilagan-Bian Career Foundation in Davao City last January 25.
Under the program, the students will stay for a year, spending for their school fees, board and lodging, and other expenditures incidental to their studies.
The parents, friends, and relatives of these students will also visit the place and spend. Some of them are expected to invest here, Lee said.
De la Peña said the program is unique as iStudy Brainmaster Philippines, Inc. will provide a pre-paid and pre-funded scheme to ACES for the incoming Chinese students.
“Perhaps this program will elevate the educational institutions of the country since it promotes world class education in terms of physical facilities, laboratories, teachers, school campus environment, library holdings and other educational amenities,” he said.
Rodolfo de los Santos, VP of iStudy Brainmaster Philippines, Inc., said for the 5,000 to 10,000 Chinese students who will enroll in the program, the company will provide 1,000 to 2,000 scholarships for deserving Filipinos who will undergo competitive examinations.
The program is also extended to the Golden State College of General Santos City owned by Dr. and Mrs. Warren Manilay, Beverly de los Santos, finance officer of iStudy, said.
De los Santos said the college will also hire more teachers, security officers, drivers, staff, and other complementary personnel to ensure the successful implementation of the program.
Study Brainmaster Philippines, Inc. and ACES Polytechnique College signed the MOU on January 24 in Panabo City witnessed by Vice Governor Victorio Suaybaguio, representing Davao Province, former PSC chair William Ramirez representing Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, a representative of Panabo City Mayor Jose Silvosa of Panabo City, and others.
In Davao City, iStudy Brainmaster entered into an MOU with the JIB Foundation, Inc. led by Joji Ilagan-Bian.
Under the MOU, JIB, will accommodate and provide the requisite facilities for all the Chinese students during their one year stay here.
“This is a new venture for us. Teaching English to Chinese is a new challenge and big step for us because it will enhance and develop our capacity,” Bian said.
Department of Tourism (DOT) regional director Art Boncato lauded Bian for opening a door for tourism through its newest venture.
Boncato said the DOT wants to grow the Chinese market. “There are more Chinese travelers now exploring the world and we want to ride on it,” he said.
The MOU signing between JIB and Brain-master was attended by representatives of the DOT, IT Davao, Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCCII), Department of Trade and Industry, and JIB’s partner schools namely Rizal Memorial Colleges (RMC), Davao Doctor’s College (DDC), and DMMA College of Southern Philippines. rodincouch February 1st, 2011, 05:36 PM Stock trading forum slated (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/business/stock-trading-forum-slated)
RESPONDING to more requests from people who want to learn stock trading, the Fourth Stock Trading Forum has been set tentatively for February 27, 2-5 p.m. at the My Hotel function room on San Pedro street, according to organizers.
Pinoy Stock Traders (www.pinoy777.wordpress.com) spokesman Jamil Ahmed said they have been receiving more requests to extend the forum series on stock trading from people in Davao who want to invest and trade stocks in the Philippine stock market.
"There are still more people contacting us about our trading seminars even after we winded up our third seminar last week, especially those who missed the chance to attend our previous seminars," Ahmed said.
Last week's third stock trading forum drew a total of ten participants who were inspired to organize the first-ever Davao Stock Traders Association led by a US trader who trades in the Philippines and the New York Stock Exchange.
According to the PST spokesman, forum topics cover such subjects like how to spot winning stocks, how to stop losses, how to take profits, how to deal with a broker, how to read charts, etc.
New participants have already started sending their full names to PST contact number 09084699301 requesting for inclusion in the new list for the coming fourth stock trading seminar, according to Ahmed.

THE city will soon come up with new traffic schemes to solve congestion in some areas aside from adding traffic signal lights.
Roberto Alabado, officer in charge of the City Planning Office, said "No Left/Right Turn" policy will be implemented and higher parking fees will be imposed to minimize, if not eradicate, the congestion problem.
Greet your friends and families this Sinulog season. Sun.Star covers Sinulog 2011 live!
Last week, the city received several complaints regarding traffic jams in some of the city's major intersections like on J.P. Laurel in Victoria Plaza and Mamay Road.
Motorists have also complained of prolonged travel time along the city's major intersections.
Alabado said the Davao City traffic signalization system is the most advanced in the entire Philippines. The traffic light system helps in controlling the traffic flow in the city but pedestrians' cooperation will help in preventing untoward incidents. But just like any computerized equipment, the traffic lights can experience technical problems.
"Maybe additional seminar will also help in educating drivers," he added.
In 2007, the city's traffic signalization system, despite experiencing dry run problems, is the considered the most modern.
The P140-million traffic system was implemented in December 19, 2007, by then Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.
The system, which is run via the Public Safety Center using video cameras in intersections, is said to be capable of watching out for traffic violators on camera.
Phase 3 of the city's traffic signalization program was completed before Duterte's term ended in June last year.
Completion of the fully-computerized system placed Davao City as the only city in the country with nearly all its intersections installed with traffic lights. (Jhun Gatmaitan)

we do have a very sophisticated and modern traffic signalization system, but I have to admit, I have run into several glitches...one of the most annoying was when one side does not get green lighted at all, you're stuck there for a long time, the other lane gets green all the time, your only option is to turn right...another glitch, when both sides have red and no one moves...the other, when green goes to red pretty quickly and only 2-3 cars are able to cross...hope the solve these glitches.

rodincouch February 2nd, 2011, 08:14 AM ONB to spend P300-M for 10 branches this year (http://www.mindanaotimes.net/?p=17078)
Written by: Francisco , Carmelito Q.
Wednesday, 02 February 2011
ONE Network Bank, considered one of the biggest rural banks in the country, is spending P300 million for its branching plan this year as it starts branching out in the Visayas.
The bank, said Alex V. Buenaventura, its president, will spend P150 million for the 10 branches that it is setting up, including those five in the Visayas and one in Makati City as the bank is spending the average of P15 million for a branch, depending on the location of the area.
The remaining half of the amount will be the capital of the branches, he explained during the forum here, pointing out that the bank has decided to set up a branch in Makati City as the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas has allowed rural banks to set up branches in the country’s central business district, Buenaventura said.
This developed as the the branches will allow the bank to widen its reach and that many of them, particularly those in areas where prices of agricultural products have increased tremendously, have been awash with cash. For example, branches in Davao Oriental have high deposit rates considering that prices of copra, the main product of the province, have gone as high as P55 a kilogram from just about P40 a kilogram last year.
Last year, the bank increased its deposit by 37% to P9.428 billion from P6.887 billion in 2009.
The bank already has 81 branches at present, all in Mindanao even as it will concentrate on serving areas considered as underbanked or unbanked.
This year, aside from the one in Makati City and the five branches in the Visayas, the bank will set up branches in Sangali, Zamboanga City; Baganga, Davao Oriental; JC Aquino St., Butuan City; and Esperanza, Sultan Kudarat.
Even when some small rural banks have closed down, the bank had decided to set up branches because “the capital expenditures are cheaper,” Buenaventura said.
“There is no more incentive for buying (smaller rural banks) because you can just apply for new licenses licenses,” he explained as the bank only pays P125,000 for a license and that the central bank has already lifted the moratorium on the setting up of branches.
He said the bank will buy “more accessible locations” in areas where it will locate.
He said the bank has yet to finalize the areas for its branches in the Visayas considering that a team that it sent to the areas has yet to finalize its evaluation.
Its Makati branch, he added, will serve the banking need of the Consunji group, one of the primary owners of the bank considering that its branch will even be located in the building of the Consunji company.

ATENEO de Davao Grade School pupils belonging to the Media Wise Club and their advisers went to see the topsy-turvy real media world of Mindanao Times newspaper and UM Broadcasting Network on January 29, 2011. UMBN VP for Radio Atty. Robert Dayrit Recede and Mindanao Times Editor-In-Chief Amy Bandiola Cabusao tried to bring order to chaos by explaining the nuts and bolts of the operations to the kids.
Mindanao Times is the oldest newspaper in Mindanao. It was founded in 1946 with editorial and business offices at Ponciano (now C. Bangoy) corner Palma Gil streets, Davao City. Before the war, The publication was owned and published by the Japanese as Davao Times. After the liberation of Davao, the publication was assumed by the Philippine Civil Affair Unit (PICAU) No. 29, of the 24th Division of the U.S. Army.
On January 2, 1946, a group of Filipinos headed by the late Atty. Guillermo E.Torres and Pedro M. Lat bought the weekly and renamed it Mindanao Times. In 1950 the Mindanao Times became a daily. In addition to the local news and features, the eight-column spread paper carried world news dispatched by the United Press international, feature articles, and comic strips from the King Features Syndicate, and national news gathered by the Philippine News Service.
However, the daily lasted for only about a year. A worldwide shortage of newsprint and other materials due to the Korean War and losses suffered by some news bureaus forced the Times to revert to a weekly. Shortly thereafter, Atty. Torres bought the newspaper from Mindanao Times Inc. and continued the publication of the newspaper under a new corporation known as Mindanao Publishers, Inc. It went on as a thrice a week newspaper for years until it began its daily run on September 2, 1997. In 2003, new sections were added for a wider scope of information such as entertainment, tourism, health, science and technology and lifestyle.

DAVAO CITY, Feb. 2 (PIA) --The Davao City Chinatown Development Council is pushing for a grander Chinatown which could be marketed as a tourism product.
Yesterday, the Davao Chinatown held a one-day Mini-Chinese village showcase at the Davao Central High School more popularly known as the Davao Chinese School, as part of the preparation for celebration of the Chinese New Year.
The Chinese village featured a traditional Chinese village set-up complete with props, costumed people and displays of Chinese goods and delicacies. Stalls selling Chinese food, a wushu exhibition, and a mahjong tournament were also presented in the event.
A specially-prepared audio-visual presentation that will simulate pyrotechnics and firecrackers will be presented to mark the onset of Chinese New Year.
This event is the “salubong” before the start of the Chinese New Year this February 3, Jasper Huang, coordinator of the festival said. Huang added that they are expecting 3,000 visitors to flock to the area.
The Chinese festival is a major initiative to make Davao Chinatown as a known tourism attraction in the city.
Other planned activities in the festival include a horse-riding display, motorcycle races and a foam party.
On the Chinese New Year itself the council will conduct a Chinese temple tour where visitors can visit various Chinese temples within the peripheries of Chinatown. It will culminate at the Lon Hua temple in Cabaguio where traditional Chinese misua is prepared for the guests.
Meanwhile Art Boncato Department of Tourism-XI Regional Director said that they are pushing for the Davao Chinatown as a product that can be marketed to tourists.
With the anticipated advent of open-skies policies the region is in need of world-class international standard tourism products to attract more visitors and provide necessary traffic for international airlines to consider Davao as a sustainable market. (PIA/RG Alama)

DAVAO CITY (PNA) – The tourism industry in the Davao Region is heading towards an upward trend in light of growth in arrivals and tourism products, according to Region 11 office of the Department of Tourism (DoT-11) Director Arturo Boncato.
Boncato said they will sustain the current momentum in the region’s tourism industry by focusing on standardization and accreditation of tourism products and destinations under the newly enacted Tourism Act of 2009.
“Because of the growth in arrivals and in tourism products, the tourism industry in the region is very progressive,” Boncato said.
Coastal netting project in Davao (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/302105/region11-tourism-progressive-dot)
DAVAO CITY (PIA) – A public-private partnership is underway to provide a netting system around coastal communities that will prevent garbage from houses and waterways reaching Davao Gulf.
These nets made of propylene are being donated by private individuals led by businessman Sonny Dizon who is the proponent of the project.
Dizon estimates that about 10 kilometers of two-inch nets would be needed to effectively set up a netting system around heavily populated coastal communities in the city.
The nets are placed between the posts of stilt houses two to three meters above ground.
