haha... Conventions usually are seasonal..... may isang taon, lahat pupunta sa Cebu, then another to Iloilo/Bacolod, then another to Davao then another to CDO then another year to Baguio etc...... This year is a banner year for conventions in Davao. i think no city should proclaim to be the so called convention capital of mindanao (Having a convention center does not equate one as a convention capital)....

Holding a convention or much less planning one is a headache... One has to check the availability of Rooms.. Then the logistics of Transportation going to and out of the town and that of within the town itself. Next is a perceived peace and order situation.. and the total cost versus possible earnings. Also, the support facilities needed for a convention itself. Some cities may look ok because of its touristic appeal but support systems are appalling... (An example would be if Town x is renowned for its natural wonders but there are few hotel rooms available, few rent a car services or even the availability of audio visual equipment is a problem. Town X may look like a good candidate but logistically, appalling.... Town Y for example has all of these But the cost of using them is expensive and the perceived peace and order situation is bad, the convention organizers would also highly not hold it there also...)

Yes we have a banner year because I think Davao has sufficient number of rooms to accommodate 5 thousand plus people in the hotels, the logistics of transporting people from Luzon and the Visayas and Mindanao to Davao is not very hard (most airlines can handle transfers of passengers from different points to Davao.) the Perceived peace and order situation is not bad. the cost is lowered because the hotels and food are lower than other cities...

Besides, The ASEAN travel forum last 2006, an international forum was held in Davao anyway.... Its a first in Mindanao (first was held in PICC, Manila 1988, Megamall in 1993 and Cebu in 1998). Davao also has also seen previous banner years in terms of conventions, esp. during the 1990's. I guess the wheel has turned full cycle now and hope more conventions will come in years ahead...

Cool school for IP students (http://opinion.inquirer.net/5444/cool-school-for-ip-students)

TALAANDIG, SUBANEN, Badjao, Mandaya, Mansaka, Tagakaolo, Mangyan, Aeta, Tiduray, Bagobo, Ifugao… Many of the Philippines’ indigenous communities are represented in this special campus. Here about a hundred young people from some 30 tribes from all over the Philippines are studying to earn college degrees in order to become useful to their communities.

The Pamulaan Center for Indigenous Peoples (IP) Education is a campus within a campus devoted to the college education of IPs. I wrote a feature story about Pamulaan a couple of years ago but I am again writing about it as we prepare for school opening and to share the good news: two batches have graduated since this special tertiary learning center opened five years ago. Five of Pamulaan’s graduates have passed the licensure examination for teachers.

I have visited Pamulaan and interacted with the students, some faculty and staff and I can say that this school is the only one of its kind in this part of the world. At the heart of Pamulaan is the Indigenous Peoples Living Heritage Center which is more than just a museum. It is a center for research, documentation and publication of indigenous knowledge systems, history and culture. It also develops education and training materials.

I flew to Davao City to attend the inauguration of the center. It was awesome. College students belonging to indigenous communities and their teachers pulled all the stops to showcase their rich culture and heritage. Indigenous costumes, music, dance, food, reading materials and works of art competed with computerized interactive displays to stress the importance of the occasion. The event also brought forth the importance of education using both indigenous knowledge and high-tech instruments. And not to forget, the meaning of community and nationhood.

Founded by anthropologist, former Jesuit scholastic and 2004 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee for Emergent Leadership Benjamin Abadiano, Pamulaan is located inside the University of Southeastern Philippines’ (USEP) Mintal campus in Davao City.

Although the Pamulaan scholars have their living quarters, library and special facilities within their special campus within USEP, they are enrolled in basic subjects taught in the USEP main campus. They interact with non-IP students every day. But Pamulaan students take special subjects which are necessary for their future work. Among these subjects are anthropology, development and history of Mindanao. They do their practicum in their places of origin.

Redemptorist Brother Karl Gaspar, a veteran development worker in Mindanao and writer, teaches Mindanao history and about cultures of the indigenous peoples and the lumad (IP) social movement. The medium of instruction is English, Pilipino and Visayan.

A noted resource person on spirituality, Gaspar noted that the students bring with them their culture’s spirituality. “And so we bring in their belief system in their studies,” Gaspar said. “They have a very strong desire to give back.”

I remember a Subanen student who said to me, “My goal is to serve.”

Pamulaan is the first institution in the Philippines to offer tertiary education for IPs and in a focused way. Pamulaan’s main thrust is to create culturally appropriate and relevant pathways of training and formation for indigenous children, youth, community leaders and development workers. Pamulaan hopes to produce graduates equipped with knowledge and abilities to initiate action toward sustainable development of IP communities.

The name Pamulaan, Abadiano explained, comes from a lumad-Matigsalog word that means seedbed. “We use the term to stress the program’s commitment to root the development of the students in the realities of their life and culture.” Abadiano also founded Tugdaan (which also means seedbed), a thriving learning and production center for Mangyans in Paitan, Oriental Mindoro.

Pamulaan does not refer only to the Davao-based tertiary institution, it also refers to the network of IP community schools in several places in the Philippines. In this network are the early childhood and elementary education programs for Aetas in Capas, Tarlac, high schools for the lumad youth in Camarines Norte, Mindanao and Mindoro, and the Tugdaan Mangyan Center for Learning and Development in Mindoro.

The Pamulaan program provides a variety of academic and non-academic approaches that address the needs of IP communities. It uses a “cycle” and “system of learning that starts from experience leading to theory, application, evaluation and reflection.” Practical training is done in IP communities.
Pamulaan offers bachelor’s degrees with majors in education, agricultural technology, anthropology and peace education.

Students get special training in functional literacy, cultural integrity, land tenure, culture of peace, leadership, governance and values formation, environment and resource management, sustainable agriculture, basic health and sanitation, community and organizational development and program and financial management.

Pamulaan also offers LEAP (local educators’ advancement program) for facilitators, para-teachers and education managers.

If you need information because you want to help send students to Pamulaan, log on to www.pamulaan.org.

It’s been a long way since Abadiano saw glimmers of Pamulaan in his dreams. Part of his RM Award cash prize went into the realization of this dream. Last March, Pamulaan had its second harvest of college graduates. The hills were alive with the sound of gongs and strings and winds. The graduates are now starting to give back to their communities.

BPI-Family Savings opens Housing Madness
SunStar (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/business/2011/05/26/bpi-family-savings-opens-housing-madness-157717)

THOSE who seek to own a house and want to enjoy housing loan packages with guaranteed rates can still visit the Davao Housing Madness, which is ongoing at the Abreeza Mall in Bajada, Davao City until Sunday.

The BPI Family Savings Bank (BFSB) opened the event on Thursday, with 11 of the city's top developers showcasing their development projects in the city and neighboring areas.

With the event, BFSB also offers the best rates for Dabawenyos who wish to seek financing for their homes.

Participating developers are Alveo Land Corp., Avida Land Corp., Kisan Lu Lands and Development Inc., DMC Urban Property Developers Inc., Communities Davao Inc., Robinsons Land Corp., Santos Land Development Corp., Robern Development Corp., Uraya Land Development Inc., Hemeni Land Corp., and Holiday Garden Island Development Corp.

Coinciding with BPI's 160th year, the event seeks to provide Davao clients with the lowest rates offered by the bank. Borrowers can also get to enjoy P10,000 off on their first monthly amortization if loan is booked on or before June 30, 2011. Clients can experience the convenience of credit decision in as fast as five days.

Jocelyn Sta. Ana, BFSB senior vice president and head of retail mortgage division, said during a press conference Wednesday that loan applications booked on or before June 30 can get the lowest 5.5 percent interest rate for loan re-pricing fixed for one year.

She said the bank is also willing to package the loan by fixing the rates within a longer period sought by applicants -- be it in five, 10, 15 or 25 years.

Sta. Ana said they are targeting at least 110 approved applications during the four-day event.

I find soccer a more elegant sport over basketball.

it seems yung may innate adeptness with their natural movement will be "at home" with "soccer" or football. dancers may make good football players and that could be why Latin countries are fanatics to it as it's part of Latin culture being expressive and being avid dancers too, and so do the rest of the world (except Philippines with its usual aping of American culture like basketball kahit midget kaya ayan kahit sa Asian games di makasungkit ng gold, unlike in football where height didn't seem to matter but rather sheer talent and dexterity, dagdagan pa aping crass culture ng crass media nila kaya tuloy nagka-uso jejemon in thinking and looks  ).

Peacebuilders from all over are here in Davao

A total of 115 peace advocates from 22 countries worldwide have arrived in Davao City for the 12th Annual Peacebuilding Training organized by Asia’s premier peace resource center, the Davao-based Mindanao Peacebuilding Institute (MPI).

Participants started the first week of training, held at the Brokenshire Resort , the graduation will sometime in June.

They have come from as far as Nigeria and Sierra Leone in Africa, Spain and Germany in Europe, United States and Canada in North America, Afghanistan and Pakistan in South-Central Asia and Japan and Laos in Asia. They represent diverse sectors in those countries, such as the government sector, civil society organizations, peace movements, academe, military, legal profession, religious sector, and the youth sector.

The course modules they will be learning over the period of three weeks include Foundation Courses (Introduction to Conflict Transformation, Fundamentals of Peacebuilding, Peace Education: Concepts and Approaches, Active Non-violence: Philosophy, Theory and Practice); Thematic Courses (Conflict Resolution Skills: Mediation, Negotiation and Dialogue, Religion: Peacebuilding in Multi-Cultural Societies, Trauma Healing and Reconciliation in Divided Communities); and Field Exposure Courses (Indigenous Peoples’ Peacebuilding Mechanisms, Approaches to Grassroots Peacebuilding, Interreligious Dialogue and Zones of Peace, and People’s Participation in Peace Processes).

Four new thematic courses are offered this year: Theory and Practice of Mediation; Working Towards Change: Peace and Justice Advocacy; Gender, Peace and Everyday Life Security; and Advanced Civilian Protection.

MPI Director Christine Vertucci said the diversity of the modules offered in this year’s training program seeks to address the increasing complexity of conflict issues and socio-political contexts from which the participants come, while at the same time, showcasing the success stories and other lessons from Mindanao.

In addition, MPI is offering two special events which complement the learning environment of the course structure—the forum on “Peacebuilding through the Lens of Mindanao and International Civil Society” held on May 21 in coordination with another peace-oriented organization, the Mindanao Peaceweavers, and the workshop entitled “The Living Symbol of Song as a Resource for Nonviolent Action” to be given by a visiting American PhD student on Conflict and Peace Studies from the University of Manitoba, Ms. Christy Reed.

“I feel that the first special event (peacebuilding forum) serves as a bridge for MPI to connect with more local civil society organizations and peacebuilding movements which answered our need to strengthen not only our international alliances but also our local networks,” said Ms. Vertucci. “The special workshop on the living symbol of the song, on the other hand, is for participants to identify historic and current ways in which music is being used as a community resource and to imagine future ways that these musical forms could be used to mobilize and invigorate nonviolent action.”

The training program is being facilitated by nine international facilitators and eight national conflict transformation experts including the recently-awarded University of the Philippines 2010-11 Outstanding Alumnus for Peace Professor Alzad Taradji Sattar. Other than individual facilitators, MPI is also tapping a partner organization—the Ecosystems Work for Essential Benefits, Inc., (EcoWEB), a non-profit NGO based in Iligan City and other partners—to facilitate the Field Exposure Courses.

Other countries represented are Burma, Cambodia, China, Croatia, Fiji, Indonesia, India, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Timor-Leste, and the Philippines which have 59 out of the 115 participants.

soccer is a "typical" ateneo sport and was very popular in addu ;)

Actually malakas rin yung sa ibang schools. ADDU nurtured soccer since the 70's and continuously supported it until now...Southpoint also has a good soccer team and so is UM

thats becoming a concern as well. sana wag magkaroroon ng real estate bubble burst along w/ subprime issues like what happened sa US in 2008 that led to d gfc.

Was the crisis in the US a burst of the real estate bubble, as in oversupplied, or was it because that bubble was sub-prime, as in pinautang sa hindi makabayad, which would have burst anyway whether oversupplied or not?

Davao: Fast-rising property market
BY ALBERT CASTRO

DAVAO City is fast becoming a spot of robust housing development, with new players channeling their resources to this Southern Philippine city apart from the usual strategy of focusing on major Philippine cities like Metro Manila and outlying areas, and Davao’s neighbor Cebu City in Visayas.

Developers like Vista Land and Phinma Property Holdings Corp. have found the Davao City property market lucrative that they are making their presence felt, complementing the activities of existing small players in the residential market as well as developers in the commercial sector.

The city’s characteristic as a "melting pot" makes it an attractive place to put up new homes, luring dwellers from neighboring areas, according to Phinma Property.

Villar-led developer Vista Land and Lifescape, Inc. noted that Davao City has its share of prospective buyers composed of overseas Filipino workers’ family, businessmen, and even expatriates.

Within Mindanao, Davao City is the largest city, covering 8 percent of the land area of Davao region (Southern Mindanao) alone, and is among the areas that attract major investments in Southern Philippines. For the whole Davao Region, it serves as the latter’s regional center.

With an international airport in its area, it is one of the primary destinations of travelers to the Philippines.

The 2007 census of the National Statistics Office placed its population at 1.37 million, up from the 2000 survey which placed its population at 1.15 million.

Commercially, Davao is increasingly becoming a preferred site for businesses, with the latest major investment being SM Investments, Corp.’s development of a 175,000-square meter mixed-use complex in Lanang district, which houses SM Investment’s flagship business of SM mall, a still to be constructed convention center, and a 200-room Radisson Hotel that will be developed in partnership with global hospitality firm Carlson group.

Early this month, conglomerate Ayala Corp. also opened its first shopping center in Mindanao, Abreeza, which is a joint-venture with Anflo Management and Investment Corp. (Anflocor). The 61,000-sq.m. Abreeza stands in a 10-hectare property which will also house residential and office space developments, and a boutique hotel.

Development was pegged at P3 billion when the project was conceptualized in 2008.

Marlon Escalicas, general manager of Vista Land’s Davao operations under the Camella brand, said these kinds of investments further boost the prospects of Davao’s residential market.

"The property segment is booming in Davao both for horizontal and vertical especially with the influx of new investments in the city," said Escales who is responsible for Vista Land’s project that caters to middle-income earners. Camella is Vista Land’s vehicle in developing properties that target middle-income earners.

In general, property buyers in Davao fall between the affordable and middle-income segments of the market, Escalicas said.

Among Vista Land’s project in Davao are Tuscana in Puan and Solariega in Talomo which are single-detached housing projects, and Camella Northpoint in JP Laurel, a condominium development.

Phinma Property, also a middle-income residential market player, said that because of Davao’s characteristic as a hub in Mindanao, it also attracts potential market from neighboring areas.

"Many families and businessmen outside Davao constitute the bulk of potential condo buyers because of the convenience and security that condo living offers," said Grant Orbeta, vice president for sales of Phinma Property.

"Most potential buyers are from outside Davao. Students who go to the good schools in Davao, businessmen & entrepreneurs who have established offices and shops in Davao," Orbeta said.

Phinma will launch its first project in Davao between end-2011 and early 2012, after initially focusing development efforts in Metro Manila. Phinma is known for its low-rise projects, which caters to the low-middle income segment of the market.

Both developers say that there is a surge in preference for condo-living in Davao.

Phinma Property said condo-living gets the nod of city dwellers because of its proximity to the city center that allows convenience in travelling to different parts of the city.

Orbeta said preference for condominiums is also driven by the congestion of Davao City’s downtown, ushering "a tendency to go vertical in the inner city."

"The uptrend in the condo market is unexpected since Davao has huge land area; there is already a shift or probably openess in preference," Escales said.

Escales though said that vertical developments might get competitive in the next five years as "several new players come in," tapping into the existing demand.

Prospects in the horizontal development or those in the single-detached housing projects, however will remain strong given Davao City’s vast land area, according to Escales.

Orbeta added that with the huge population and continuing growth of the city, Davao’s property market will remain "very robust" and "will continue to do so" in the years to come.

Good job to the healthy synergy amongst the local business sector, the people of davao, and the city government. ;)
the advantage of having a leader, assuming the new administration, that rose from same political party of the previous administration. momentum of continuity of programs is sustained. and we are now seeing results. what could have happen to the political environment of davao city, the med and long term programs and projects of the prev adminitration, had a bitter political rival assumed the executive position? i could imagine davao city would have to start from scratch again... all those 911 vehicles would been bearing a extra name now...

Style Origin 10: Abreeza (Davao)
stylenarratives (http://stylenarratives.blogspot.com/2011/05/style-origin-10-abreeza-davao.html)

Davao is such a beautiful place. The style team together with JCA productions were there for only three days and wished we could have stayed longer. The last of the Style Origin series was held at the newly opened Ayala Mall called Abreeza. True to the Ayala aesthetics, the mall is a design masterpiece fusing contemporary design with nature. The spacious area is a balance of modernity and greenery which is truly work with nature. SO many shops of all sorts in this four level multi complex mall with Robinson's Department store inside of it. This set up is the ideal concept of shopping and space.

We came to Davao in two group because half of the team was doing Style Origins Bonifacio High Street the day before. Below are pics of the advance team:

Day 3 was when the entire team was finally complete and we heard that the Style Origin Bonifacio High Street was a complete success--we miss you Rudolph Leonor, Mikka Velasquez together with the author's fashion communcation students Teri Marcelo, Nicole Santos, Jeanne Khe and Pam Bassig. Of course the band for this leg was Rico Blanco who did an awesome soundtrack again. Personally, Abreeza had the biggest crowd to date since the mall that day was packed with people on all floors. The Style Origin series by the Ayala Malls has been a great ride for JCA, tenants, suppliers, models, makeup artists, bands and not to forget the style team. Good times, good memories and a lot of good food hahahahaha! Touring the Ayala Mall around the country was definitely great time and fun altogether--the team wouldn't mind doing it all over again. A superb summer celebration for both music and fashion!!! Cheers to Style Origin.

Distributor of upscale fashion items
introduces more brands to local market
http://www.vogueconcepts.com/vogue_concepts/images/design/vogue-logo.jpg
http://www.vogueconcepts.com/vogue_concepts/images/design/jobs.jpg

DAVAO CITY -- Vogue Concepts, Inc., a company that brings in foreign products, including upscale European fashion names, is planning to add more brands to its list.
The company has just established its shops for Paris-based Promod and Parfois of Portugal at this city’s Abreeza Mall, owned by Accendo Commercial Corp., a joint venture company of Ayala Land, Inc. and Anflo Investment and Management Corp.

Louella C. Scott, general manager of Vogue Concepts, said more concept stores would be introduced here soon, among them Yves Rocher of France and Etam, a European lingerie brand. “We have asked additional space [for these brands],” Ms. Scott told BusinessWorld.

Earlier, Accendo announced that it would also rent out the first floor of the still-to-be-constructed three-storey business process outsourcing building within the shopping mall complex.

Shop operators noted the big potential for upscale brand concept stores.

“If local brands are satisfied with the P12,000-a-month-per-square-meter income, for us that is just the beginning,” said Ms. Scott.

As proof, she cited the unexpected performance of Flojos, a footwear store in SM City Davao that has enjoyed brisk sales.

She debunked the mind-set that foreign name brands are only for the high-end market. “We have affordable items,” Ms. Scott said, adding that the brands carried by her company have adjusted to market requirements.

Despite these adjustments, investing in these brands is not cheap since the look and ambiance of the stores in France and the Philippines must be similar: everything from the glass used in display windows to the color of the walls must be the same.

Ms. Scott also pointed out that if the brand changes its concept, franchisees must do the same.

To make sure that consumer demands are met, the inventory is restocked weekly. “If an item is selling fast,” said Ms. Scott, “we replenish as often as possible.”

Agree, sayang to ang MBA wala ma sustain.

SM Mall sets VisMin expansion
BY ALBERT CASTRO
Malaya Business
(http://www.malaya.com.ph/may30/busi3.html)
May 30, 2011

SM Prime Holdings, Inc. (SM Prime) is embarking on its fourth-biggest mall in the Visayas and Mindanao, this time to be set up in Cebu City.

The mall operating arm of the SM group of companies is also expanding its operation in Davao City, adding a new building structure to complement the existing and only SM mall in the area.

SM Prime is slowly but steadily expanding its base in southern Philippines.

"The south (VISMIN) offers great business opportunities given that population is big and many cities are moving towards urbanization," said Jeffery L. Lim, SM Prime chief finance officer, in an interview with Malaya Business Insight.

"With the increasing number of OFWs originating in the VisMin region and the number of BPOs relocating to this region, these factors have definitely increased the disposable income and upgraded the lifestyle of the people, which resulted in a clamor for SM since we are known as the premier lifestyle trendsetter," Lim said.

The company plans to add more malls in the area later apart from the Davao expansion and the new mall in Cebu City’s South Road Project.

As of end-2010, SM Prime had a total of 40 malls all over the Philippines, most of them in Metro Manila and outlying areas in Luzon.

Only four malls – SM Iloilo, SM Cebu, SM Davao, and SM Cagayan de Oro – are located elsewhere in the country and comprising 11 percent of the company’s 5 million gross floor area (GFA).

SM Prime in all of its malls provides marketing space of an estimated 11,848 tenants, while attracting an average of 3 million foot traffic daily.

In Davao, SM Prime’s expansion will complement its two malls in Mindanao, the ones in SM Cagayan de Oro, which opened a year apart in 2001 and 2002, respectively, and were the company’s first entry to both cities.

SM City Davao serves a "highly urbanized" community in an area considered to be one of the most progressive in the country, said the company. At 78,735 square meters (sq.m.) the Davao mall will have an additional 44,408 sq.m. through another structure that will be constructed beside it.

The new, "sleeker design" of the expansion will "create an identity that updates and revitalizes that of the original mall," said SM Prime in a report to stockholders.

"A random pattern of colored rectangles will decorate the expansion’s exterior shell, while incorporating wide windows to provide sufficient light to the spaces allotted for BPO firms located at upper levels," it also said.

The extension will feature a "landscaped" boulevard of restaurants with each restaurant having a dedicated area for al fresco dining and easy access to both the interior of the mall and to the exterior sidewalks and driveways. Elevated walkways will also connect the existing SM City Davao with the expansion.

"Special paved patterns will direct customers towards clearly defined entrances in front and at the back of the expansion, as well as towards the boulevard of restaurants, along a meandering, playful sidewalk. The exterior of the existing building will be renovated to blend with the expansion," said SM Prime.

An expansion means that there is marked development in the area since SM Prime initially enters a place with just a small mall.

"The mall size depends on the market capacity which is a factor of population and purchasing power. Other factors include the functional role of the city/municipality and level of transient population," said Lim, noting that while the malls may be there to service the people of the area, they also become a catalyst of growth.

"Since we serve as a catalyst of growth, the surrounding communities normally expand and more public transport lines become available to bring in consumers from neighboring towns. These cause the market capacity to grow which ultimately may justify the expansion of the mall," he said.

In Cebu City’s case, the construction of SM Seaside City Cebu, the name attributed to the new mall that will rise there, is making the company "excited" according to SM Prime president Hans T. Sy.

SM Seaside City Cebu will service locators to the 300-hectare reclaimed area that the city government of Cebu has auctioned for developers.

There are two big developers that won a portion of the property, 30 hectares of which went to the SM group.

Cebu City is commonly referred to as the "Queen City of the South" being the oldest city in the Philippines, having been founded in the Spanish era. It is also the second most significant metropolitan center in the Philippines where the most busy business activities are found down south.

The South Road Project was created by the Cebu City government to save and increase the limited lands available beside the city’s east coast.

SM Prime opened its first mall in the city in 1998, aptly named SM Cebu City.

At 291,043 sq.m., SM Seaside City Cebu will rank fourth in terms of GFA, next to SM Megamall, which has a GFA of 348,056 sq.m. SM North EDSA is SM Prime’s biggest mall at 482,878 sq.m.

SM Prime has tapped Miami, Florida-based architecture, interior design and planning firm Arquitectonica to design the Cebu mall.

Robinsons Cybergate Davao

Robinsons Cybergate Davao is the city’s favorite neighborhood shopping center. This two-level community mall perfectly matches Davao’s flare for diversity and active lifestyle. Located along J.P. Laurel Avenue, this is Robinsons Land Corporation’s first commercial center in the Mindanao region of this format.

Nestled under one roof are Robinsons retail giants (Robinsons Supermarket and Handyman Do It Best), several restaurants and food outlets, retail and specialty stores, and commercial spaces allotted for BPO/call centers, medical clinics and other offices. Robinsons Cybergate Davao also features an annex building which offers al fresco strip dining for customers and guests who would like to feast and unwind.

To perk up the excitement of tourists and Davaoeños, opening soon at this shopping center is gohotels.ph, Manila’s best value hotel

Kaya siguro wala pang BPO locator kasi gawin nilang GoHotel instead?

Tourism dep’t claims foreign visitor count on track to goal

THE DEPARTMENT of Tourism (DoT) said yesterday that foreign tourist arrivals reached about 1.31 million in the four months to April, nearly half the full-year target and about 13.33% more than what was recorded in the same period last year.

"By reaching this figure in the first four months of the year alone, our 3.74-million target for the year is well within reach," Tourism Secretary Alberto A. Lim said in a press briefing on Monday.

"Our continuing efforts on the intentional front, especially in trade fairs abroad, will ensure that the target is met."

Mr. Lim said that South Korea remained the top source of tourists with 286,018 visitors in the first four months, or 21.8% of the total recorded in that period.

The United States followed with 229,200 visitors, accounting for 17.5%, and Japan with 129,223 visitors, or 9.86%.

In terms of domestic tourism, Mr. Lim said that 23 million Filipinos traveled around the country in the same period.

The top destinations for local tourists in that period included Camarines Sur, Cebu, Davao, Cagayan Valley and Boracay, among others.

"Domestic tourism is picking up because of the low airfare rates offered by domestic airlines, and also because local destinations are picking up by themselves and offering more attractions," Mr. Lim explained.

Mr. Lim said while growth in foreign visitors is a welcome development, the Philippines lags behind its fellow members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in this regard.

"We stand sixth out of seven countries in the ASEAN in terms of 2009 figures, with Malaysia leading with 23 million visitors in 2009; Thailand, 14 million; Singapore, 7.5 million; Indonesia, 6.3 million; Vietnam with 3.74 million and the Philippines with only three million," Mr. Lim noted.

E-cigarettes also to be included in smoking ban

DAVAO CITY May 30 (PIA)-- For those into e-cigarettes, watch out!

The City Government of Davao Anti Smoking Task Force warned e-cigarette smokers that they are not exempted from the smoking ban in the city.

Dr. Domilyn Villareiz, chief of the anti-smoking task force, said that e-cigarette users are actually emulating the habits of a smoker thus should like regular cigarette smokers respect anti-smoking zones. “If we allow these vapers (e-cigarette smokers) it is like tolerating the acts of smoking,” Villareiz added.

However those caught using e-cigarettes in public places will not be penalized however they will be asked to step out and do their thing outside where it is permissible.

She said that they are working to amend the Anti-Smoking ordinance to include e-cigarettes and sisha. This is to avoid gray areas in the law. Villareiz said that the Comprehensive Anti-Smoking Ordinance was crafted in 2002 when these products were unheard of.

E-cigarette is an electronic device which tries to simulate tobacco smoking through the means of a vapor. These mists contain resemblance to the sensation, appearance of cigarette smoke. It is used primarily as a therapy to help an individual quit his cigarette habit.

Villareiz said that e-cigarettes are also not yet approved by the Food and Drug Administration as a nicotine replacement therapy. Some of these e-cigarettes contains small dose of nicotine, thus those addicted to nicotine will prefer laced e-cigarettes to satisfy the urge and will not really help in kicking out that habit. 141 die from lung cancer in ’10: data
Written by: Fusilero , Kristianne
Tuesday, 31 May 2011

THE ANTI-SMOKING Task Force noted a record number of deaths attributed to lung cancer as the figures increased by four-folds in 2010, data based on the report from various hospitals revealed.
Dr. Domilyn C. Villareiz, Anti-Smoking Task Force co-chair, said yesterday in the weekly press forum at SM City Davao that there were 141 deaths due to lung cancer in the city last year against the 38 casualties in 2009.

“Tobacco kills one of two long term users… An increase in the deaths of the three leading causes due to cigarette smoking had been noted because people still continue to smoke and no intervention was done to help them to stop smoking in a bigger scale, she said.

Since 2001 up to last year, there were 1,075 deaths due to smoke-related diseases like cancer of trachea, bronchus and lungs. In a decade of monitoring the cases, the number of deaths peaked last year, followed by 2007 with 126 deaths.

In the country, about 15,000 individuals with lung cancer die annually.

The World Health Organization reported that smoking is responsible for 90 percent of lung cancers, 75 percent of chronic bronchitis and emphysema. About 25 percent of ischemic heart disease was also due to smoking.

While the number of deaths due to lung cancer rose the previous year, the number of arrests in relation to the Anti-Smoking Ordinance, which was approved in 2002, declined from the 1,591 violators in 2008, 1,228 in 2009 and 820 last year.

The task force, meanwhile, will celebrate today the World No Tobacco Day and the 9th Anniversary of the Anti-Smoking Campaign in a program at 3 p.m. in People’s Park.

The task force would also propose to the city council by next month for the amendment of the local anti-smoking ordinance. The proposed amendment will include the prohibition of water pipes, shisa and electronic cigarettes in public places.

The proposal is currently being reviewed by the City Legal Office.

The prevalence rate of smokers in the city is three percent lower or 25 percent against the national rate of 28 percent due to the strict implementation of the anti-smoking law, local government data revealed.

“The low prevalence rate of smokers in the city is attributed to the strict enforcement of the anti-smoking ordinance. I am proud to say that the enforcement rate on the anti-smoking law in the city is 99 percent,” Villareiz in an earlier interview said.

Davao City eyeing ban of e-cigarettes
by Mindanao Insider on Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at 11:44am

Smokers who are trying to kick out the habit using the so-called e-cigarettes will be banished from Davao City if they could not find another means to quit.

The Anti Smoking Task Force of Davao City said it is working to amend the Anti-Smoking ordinance to include e-cigarettes as well as sisha.

This is to avoid gray areas in the law, the Task Force said as it holds the view that e-cigarettes should be part of the prohibition.

E-cigarette is an electronic device which tries to simulate tobacco smoking through the means of a vapor.

These mists contain resemblance to the sensation, appearance of cigarette smoke. It is used primarily as a therapy to help an individual quit his cigarette habit.

Dr. Domilyn Villareiz, chief of the anti-smoking task force, said that e-cigarette users are actually emulating the habits of a smoker thus should like regular cigarette smokers respect anti-smoking zones. “If we allow these vapers (e-cigarette smokers) it is like tolerating the acts of smoking.” Villareiz added.

In the absence of a clear-cut law, those caught using e-cigarettes in public places will not be penalized but will be asked to step out and do their thing outside where it is permissible.

The Task Force chief said that they are working to amend the Anti-Smoking ordinance that was crafted in 2002 when these products were unheard of.

Chic French style is here (http://davaocitynews.blogspot.com/2011/05/chic-french-style-is-here.html)

FRENCH style has arrived in Davao City. Thanks to Abreeza of the Ayala Malls, which recently opened on J.P. Laurel avenue in Bajada. The mall houses new faces that Dabawenyos can now brag about.

One of these is Promod, the leading high street fashion brand from France, which finally opened its doors in Davao City, the first in Mindanao.

In its website, Promod claimed to be one of the biggest fashion store chains in the world serving 20 million chic fashionistas a year in its 704 outlets in 47 countries. It has established to its name as a brand that effortlessly put "chic" to the fashion style of countless women in Europe.

Promod's branch at Abreeza is its 7th in the country. It also has branches at Ayala Center Cebu, Greenbelt, Robinsons Place Manila (Ermita), SM City Cebu, SM Megamall and TriNoma.

"Everything that we have here came all the way from France," Samantha Dexheimer, Promod's brand associate, said in an interview during the store's opening at Abreeza, as she expressed confidence on the potential of their target market in this part of the country.

"These items are all designed and made in France, but their prices are very reasonable. For sure, Davao fashionistas can afford them," she said.

With Ayala's captured market -- that's belonging to AB and higher C -- Dexheimer believes there's no reason for them to go falter in the city.

"Ayala is here, that's why we are here. We are confident on how Ayala handles its marketing. For sure Ayala could help us promote our merchandise here in Davao," Dexheimer said.

She also assured prospective clients in Davao City and its neighboring areas that their window display in Manila and Cebu would be the same as that of their Abreeza branch. This was her reaction when told about complaints of some Dabawenyo shoppers that the city has become a "dumping ground" of unsold stocks from Manila and Cebu.

"Ayala won't allow that," Dexheimer said.

Now, take a sneak peek at Promod's latest styles and collections available at its Abreeza branch, which will surely fit and please you:

Urban Tribu

Feel like being somewhere else, inspired from "Out of Africa" for urban safari silhouettes. Play around the Saharan theme (either as a dress, jacket or skirt) combined with ethnic or animal skin prints and braided accessories.

All of it spread out over a range of warm caramel tones.

Animal Prints

Playing with animal prints can be a very dangerous style game. Of all of the fashion faux pas, nothing is quite as tragic as the poor styling of animal prints.

Introducing animal prints has the unique potential to add a touch of class to a smart outfit if put together properly. In this collection We can find Leopard printed Dress, Harem Pants, sandals and zebra print skirt and dress. These prints can be paired with either plain black or plain white in order to keep it classy.

1950's

Dolce Vita style. Be glamorous with dresses and middy skirts, tight at the waist. Reveal your legs saddling on a Vespa with skorts, haltered rompers, Polka dots and nautical Stripes,. All of it mounted on heels.

Pearl Harbor

1940's retro (Navy) style is enhanced and reactivated.

New rompers, Bermuda shorts, bridge trouser, open back and middy blouse shapes bearing fluid materials.

They liven up in stripe patterns, geometric micro prints and playful anchors.

Navy shades are enhanced by yellow tones. Accessories: flat to wedge heel sandals.

Fragile

POETISE its ceremonial wear through light and diaphanous overlaid materials: evanescent flowers and butterfly prints laid out in an ivory and ecru cameo down to pastel pink.

Color on color Enjoy the life, burst of colours.

Combine the simplicity of box shapes, square lines and 7/8th trousers bearing multicolor stripes and pop prints.

Dare combine colour on colour pieces.

Romantic Hippy

FAMOUS photographer Hamilton's 1970's: romantic women dressed up in dresses and long slips, blouses and tunics.

Cotton fabrics are graced with lace ribbons. Fabrics are bleached and supple as skin.

Accessories go feminine all the way: flowers, chiselled metals, rope pouches, all of it modernised by a broad leather belt. The range shows contrasts between faded whites, ecrus and caramel shades

Garden Party

Cotton fabric freshness, flowers grow as bouquets on our favourite pieces: top-and-dress outfits.

The range plays around on sorbet tones combined with jeans and straw accessories.

Feel free to combine white and mastic

Picnic

Promenade in Saint-Tropez the Brigitte Bardot way. Playing around with the French flag colours in rolled-up shorts, corsair pants, corolla skirts. Bustier style and bandeau for dresses and t-shirts.

Indispensable: red Vichy all the way down to accessories.

Villages ok expansion of hydro plant (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/business/2011/05/31/villages-ok-expansion-hydro-plant-158616)

BARANGAYS Astorga and Sibulan in Sta. Cruz town in Davao del Sur gave their consent to AboitizPower Corp.'s wholly-owned subsidiary Hedcor to build two more plants in the said town with a total capacity of 13.6 MW.

Simultaneous to the giving of consent, Hedcor with the barangay councils signed a memorandum of agreement where benefits to the host communities from the project were specified.

Dubbed as the Tudaya Hydropower Project, the Tudaya 1 Hydropower Project is proposed to be located upstream of the Sibulan Hydro A Power Plant while the Tudaya Hydropower Project is to be built below the Sibulan Hydro B Power Plant.

The exploration began in 2010, and in early 2011. Hedcor engineers started design of Tudaya 1 in Sibulan and Tudaya 2 in Astorga. Now, Hedcor is working with the permits before the construction will start.

"Dako namong kalipay ang pag-abot sa Hedcor dinhi sa among lugar (We're jubilant Hedcor came to our place)," Barangay Astorga Captain Sergio Languita said before the representatives of Hedcor and Astorga barangay council.

Astorga is the second largest barangay in Sta Cruz with a population of approximately 11,000. The benefits will start in the next few months with the community services, scholarship grants, and reforestation to their barangay. After the first operational year of the plant, they will also receive royalty from Hedcor.

Sibulan Captain Lydia Ang said, "Hedcor is indeed a blessing to us. We availed of free medical services, we have sent many children to school, we have developed our reforestation program and we received an annual royalty."

Hedcor is committed to promote clean energy and will continue to look for more potential to develop to bring it to more Filipinos.

AboitizPower is the holding company of the Aboitiz Group's investments in power generation, distribution, retail and power services. It is a major producer of Cleanergy, its brand for clean and renewable energy in the Philippines with several hydroelectric and geothermal assets in its generation portfolio, and also has non-renewable power plants located across the country.

The company owns distribution utilities that operate in high-growth areas in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

13th Philippine Eagle Week takes off this weekend (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/local-news/2011/05/31/13th-philippine-eagle-week-takes-weekend-158624)

THE annual celebration for the endangered Philippine Eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi) begins this weekend with various festivities in Davao City.

The Philippine Eagle Week, mandated by Presidential Proclamation No. 79 (February 24, 1999), to be celebrated every June 4-10, is seen as a time to celebrate the beauty and symbolism of the Philippine Eagle and the richness of the Philippine environment, encourage responsible enjoyment of wildlife, and bring attention to what can be done to ensure that natural resources continue to benefit future generations.

The celebration seeks to echo the declaration of 2011 as the International Year of the Forest.

"A pair of Philippine Eagles needs at least 7,000 to 13,000 hectares of forest as a nesting territory; the Philippines lost about 270,000 hectares of forest a year between 2000-2005, according to a UN Food and Agriculture Office study in 2005," said Tatit Quiblat, spokesperson of the Philippine Eagle Foundation and coordinator of the Philippine Eagle Week celebrations.

"If we are losing that much forest, it's not only the Philippine Eagle population that suffers; the flooding, landslides, problematic water supply, and other effects of deforestation have been affecting and will continue to affect the Filipino people too," she added.

"We need to seriously look at investing in enforcing laws to keep existing forests intact and rehabilitating damaged environments, rather than incurring losses to business and agriculture and spending millions in relief efforts whenever disaster strikes."

The 13th edition of the Eagle Week is extended to June 12, to create a twin celebration of the national bird and Philippine Independence Day.

Activities include the GreenMob Opening Parade on June 4, and the SAYAgila Interbarangay Dance Contest which concludes on June 11. Registration for the Dance Contest is extended to June 3; entry forms may be obtained and submitted at the NCCC Mall Administration Office.

The Sports complex has been planned in Mintal, Davao City, near the UP Mindanao area. It was supposed to take off but I guess it is not yet within the priorities of the City Government.... bakit doon? Sports complexes in most countries are now located far from the City to avoid the city pollution.

yes, Davao before have been a host to PRISAA before. It was held almost always at the PTA grounds (Now People's park) Nawala nga kasi The PTA grandstand burned down and in consequence, displaced students of 3 elementary schools that are housed in that grandstand then....currently the only school at the PTA ground is the Kapitan Tomas Monteverde Elementary school....

Davao Restaurateurs Assembly
Written by: Castillo , Hernando O.
Wednesday, 01 June 2011

DAVAO City is booming. That’s what people keep saying. Of course, it has nothing to do with terrorism but the continuous infrastructure projects that adorn the urban landscape. It may also refer to the population without the RH bill.

Many residents mean problems or opportunities. In a perfect world, that’s a lot of cash registers ringing like Christmas bells – especially in the food business sector. Optimism could, however, get dampened by the fierce competition. So smart entrepreneurs go for an extra mile to shun mediocrity.

On the forefront of local institutions that help hone knowledge and skills for food business survival are the Institute of International Culinary and Hospitality Entrepreneurship (ICHEF) of the Joji Ilagan Career Centre Foundation, the Regional Office of the Department of Tourism in Davao, and the Mindanao Tourism Congress. They hooked up with F&H or the Food & Hospitality Events Specialist Inc. to update restaurateurs on best practices and the latest trends in the food industry via a series of gatherings in Davao City.

On May 28, 2011, the Davao Restaurateurs Assembly was held at the mini-theater of the Bangko Sentral Convention Center. ICHEF President Joji Ilagan-Bian delivered the welcome speech, DOT Regional Director Art Boncato talked about “Dining and Tourism in Davao: Making Davao City a Culinary Destination,” F&H President Adrian Aran Jr. spoke of “The 4 Rs of Restauranting:

Restaurateurs’ Recipe for Running a Restaurant,” and Mindanao Tourism Congress Vice President Susan Palad expressed support and the closing remarks for the four-hour event.

Another collaborative project that is expected to bring goodwill and new business ideas is the Dine Philippines 2011 Young Restaurateurs Summit on July 8, 2011, at Marco Polo Hotel. Touted as the largest gathering of restaurateurs in Davao City with topnotch young restaurateurs in the country today, the summit will explore insights to generate key strategies and innovative developments for the industry. It is said to be an inspiring venue for aspiring restaurateurs and hoteliers to become successful business owners. A rare treat would be learning from the voice of experience coming from some of the big players in a friendly atmosphere.

Owners and top management people from established restaurants and hospitality businesses are coming with HRM teachers and students, culinary experts, venture capitalists, material suppliers, media representatives, and observers to share precious information.

City grabs Red Orchid award for anti smoking
Written by: Fusilero , Kristianne
Wednesday, 01 June 2011

THE CITY bagged anew the Red Orchid Award from the Department of Health (DOH) yesterday during the celebration of World No Tobacco Day for achieving a 100 percent smoke-free environment.

This is the second year that the city was awarded the Red Orchid Award, Dr. Domilyn Villareiz, co-chairperson of the Anti-Smoking Task Force, said in her speech yesterday during the 9th anniversary of the Smoke-Free Davao Campaign.

The city received a trophy, a certificate, and P100,000 worth of nicotine replacement therapy patches
or medicines to aid smokers to quit.

She said they will first focus on helping the authorities especially the cops and the barangay officials to undergo the nicotine replacement therapy. She said they should serve as role models to the public on keeping the city compliant with the anti-smoking law.

Last year, the city’s anti-smoking task force apprehended 820 violators. The number of arrests in relation to the Anti-Smoking Ordinance showed a decline to from 1,591 violators in 2008 to 1,228 in 2009.

The DoH said the city was among the 34 awardees out of 89 nominees in the country that are government offices, hospitals and local government units. The award served as recognition on the strict compliance of the anti-smoking law.

The basis of the health agency in choosing the awardee are: enforcement of tobacco control policies, provision of information and education to warn people about the hazards of smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke, delivery of smoking cessation services, among others.

Increasing number of land titles indicates Davao City’s progress
MONDAY, 30 MAY 2011 00:00

Noting that the register of deeds (RDs) in the Davao region remains in the top five with highest in demand nationwide, Aster E. Cruzabra, Davao City registrar of deeds, told Edge Davao that real property estates are a key indicator of economic progress which means more and more investors are coming to the city.
Saying that the number of land titles released in the city has been increasing each year, she added, “The real estate industry in the city is very promising as real estate economics is a strong fundamental economic indicator.”
Cruzabra said that part of this progress is the integrity of the Torrens system, “a system for recording land titles under which a court may direct the issuance of a certificate of title upon application by the landowner.”
“Kung wala nay banko modawat og land title as collateral, something must be wrong. Samtang naa pay nagadawat nga bangko, there is integrity sa Torrens system. The duty of LRA is to protect this integrity,” she added.
The city has more than 700,000 land titles, according to her, mainly in subdivision development housing. The city government recently awarded 3,000 individual land titles in such locations as National Housing Authority subdivisions and Sandawa.
“It is the mayor’s (Sara Duterte) flagship,” Cruzabra said.
Automated
Determining whether the business climate in Davao has become favorable can now be easily ascertained as land title transactions have gone automated – with figures easily obtained with the click of the mouse, Cruzabra said earlier.
“Actually, our real property estate is really good, thanks to the support of our city government,” she said.
Land developers have the most transactions, according to her. There is a developer that had 2,700 splittings of a property, and that in Davao City alone, the NHA had 2,500 such splittings.
Accepting an average of 70 to 80 transactions a day in chattel, mortgage and real estate, Davao City RD can only accommodate 30, thus the backlog in unreleased land titles. Based on the updated activity details in August last year, the office had released 6,435 land titles, while the backlog in encoding consist of 1,180, and those pending for release, which lack some supporting documents, are at 50 percent.
However, as of press time, Cruzabra said 80% of scanned land titles have already been encoded into the database. Having conducted a time and motion study of the work flow in the RD, she added that backlogs are inevitable. “How do we address the problem of backlogs is to become paperless,” she said.
Through the Land Registration Systems, Inc. (LARES) headed by its president, Delfin T. Hallare, Jr., partner of the Land Registration Authority (LRA), the processes in land registration were already computerized as far back as December 2, 2009. Before becoming fully automated, the LRA admits, the transition process, particularly in creating the database, would depend on the activity of the RD. “Looking for titles in vaults takes a long time,” Hallare said.
For her part, Cruzabra said, “The delay is temporary because the employees are not yet that ready for the technology. We are still completing the database and the system is being updated from time to time.” Hopeful that it will be completed in two years, she added that comparing data from the vaults with the ones encoded in the computer will also take a little more time.
LARES, automating the processes through the Land Titling Computerization Project (LTCP) in a Build Own Operate (BOO) arrangement under the Build Operate Transfer (BOT) Law, had provided almost all facilities and renovates the RDs nationwide to complement the IT infrastructure and standardized processes of the automated system. It has automated168 RDs nationwide, constructed 13 and renovated 84.
Genuine land title detection, security
In a statement earlier sent by LARES, with the new computerized system, land titles are protected from loss due to fire, theft, natural disasters and the normal ravages of time because LARES is using security-tested document-imaging technology.
Cruzabra said the RD will no longer generate a hard copy of the original certificate of title (the Registry copy), instead, the original copy of the title shall be maintained in its original electronic form. She added that they can provide a printed copy of the electronic form, but cannot duplicate the original hard copy.
“Requests to obtain a new original copy will only be granted by a trial court based on a petition,” she said.
The automated system is also capable of providing a system of control to prevent overlapping or duplication of title by using modern digital mapping technology to create accurate and updated map sheets, and provide accurate, current and fast lot status verification. In addition, the system is also capable of timely detection and identification of fake land titles.
Even the registrar of deeds had to improvise her own way of detecting fake land titles. Cruzabra said, “You have to lick it, touch it and feel it,” adding that the paper used for land titles are exclusively released by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, the same government body that prints the country’s legal tenders.
While the land title costs only P90, each supporting document in land registration constitutes a fee of P268.80 that goes to LARES, the contractor binded to the state-run body for 10 years.
Players of deceit
While there is a fact finding mission undertaken by the LRA on fake land titles, the registrar of deeds herself has filed cases against players of deceit.
Cruzabra told Edge Davao last week that every now and then she receives statements and documents from different groups claiming ownership of land.
“Malingaw ka lagi. You’ll enjoy reading them,” she said, showing a sample of bogus documents compiled in a clear book with photocopies of seemingly authenticated documents.
Cruzabra cited several groups claiming that they are descendants of a Spanish family or some sultanate who owns the entire Davao City or Mindanao, while some even claim the entire Philippines, such as Bagong Lahi whose case had been brought to the committee of the Davao City Council.
She also mentioned GOD that stands for Government of Divinity, a group that once called her up telling her not to release a land title without getting the group’s consent because, according to them, “the land belongs to the Divine.”

GOOD news to all Havaianaticos!

Havaianas, the world's favorite rubber flip-flops brand, now has a new home at All Flip-Flops at Abreeza Mall in Davao City.

To mark its opening, All Flip-Flops prepared a flash-mob inspired activity last May 14. Summer-loving, flip-flops enthusiasts, who seemed to be normal shoppers at first, surprised the Abreeza crowd when out of nowhere they all donned colorful wayfarer sunglasses and Havaianas lanyards and randomly handed out Havaianas Always Summer pouches to people.

A total of 150 shoppers received the colorful pouches, each containing a Hawaiian-inspired lei necklace. Customers who wore the lei when they visited the new All Flip-Flops outlet at Abreeza received Limited Edition Havaianas Mood Bracelets.

"We are very excited with the opening of All Flip-Flops at Abreeza. This is our biggest All Flip-Flops outlet in Mindanao so far and will serve as our flagship store in Southern and Eastern Mindanao," said Marga Nograles, creative director of Martish Marketing Co, the exclusive sub-distributor for Havaianas Philippines in Southern and Eastern Mindanao.

This summer, Havaianas pays tribute to some of the world's most iconic dolls with the Havaianas Slim Dolls Collection.

Choose from three unique designs and experience the styles and meanings of the dolls coming from diverse cultures.

Havaianas Slim Brazilian takes inspiration from the Brazilian cloth or paper dolls in colorful Bahiana skirts and turbans. Havaianas Slim Brazilian is available in Lavender Blue, Lemon, and White and showcases ethnic and tropical prints, embellished with a charming Bahiana metal pin on the strap that represents the playful and lively country of Brazil.

Celebrate your caring and nurturing personality with Havaianas Slim Matryoshka, which picks up its modern and up-to-date designs from those beautiful handpainted nesting dolls of Russia. Available in Dark Brown/Golden Sun, Navy Blue, and Sugar Coral, colors that are a perfect complement to your summer outfit, this style comes with a delightful Matryoshka embellishment on each strap.

Havaianas Slim Kokeshi pays tribute to the Kokeshi dolls of Northern Japan, traditionally believed to symbolize luck, happiness and longevity.

Each sole features dainty prints and the strap is adorned with a tiny metal Kokeshi charm to add a little romance to your every step. Havaianas Slim Kokeshi is available in Baby Lilac, Dark Brown/Golden Sun, and Grey/Silver.

Ilang sakong bigas na kaya yan and how about the court? Is it easy to build a tennis court and if you can find one, you need either become a member first or pay per play. Kaya ba yan ng grassroot natin? Hindi, kaya malabo tayong maka develop ng de kalidad na tennis as only a few can afford it. Yung soccer kahit backyard lawn lang pwede na makapag praktis ang mga bata, parang basketbol baga na basta may open space lang kahit konti pwede nang gawing court kahit lupa pa yan.

Re: India buhi gyud ang cricket because they play anywhere as long there is space, and that's the same thing i'm espousing regarding soccer.

I actually disagree about soccer being more elegant than basketball... but if elegance na lng paguusapan, among the more popular sports, I'd pick tennis and golf, where due courtesy and culture are practiced.

I actually disagree about soccer being more elegant than basketball... but if elegance na lng paguusapan, among the more popular sports, I'd pick tennis and golf, where due courtesy and culture are practiced.

you have a point, although golf is expensive and sometimes stigmatized to being "elitist" due to it.

when I mentioned on football being "elegant" I was referring instead to its application as sport to seeming synchronizing of human anatomical movement to the point it's like "dancing", and its way of conditioning the human mind to the patience of waiting for that goal and the ultimate crecendo of finally acquiring it, malamang most of the International community had discerned it hence its popularity except to some Filipinos, also partly due to cultural preference and influence lalo na with anything American or Hollywood culture (the latter ain't that much hyped over it, with the former mimicking them).

Marco Polo Davao's GM bids farewell
By Carmelle Marie Harrow
Thursday, June 2, 2011

MARCO Polo Hotel Davao general manager bids farewell to Davao as he announced his immediate departure for Hong Kong's Marco Polo branch on June 10.

Nigel Fisher thanked the media and the Dabawenyos, saying that during his 21-month of stay in Davao, he felt very much welcomed and loved to be a part of a wonderful city.

Fisher introduced his substitute, Thomas Pfordte (pronounced as Ford), a group manager of Marco Polo's food and beverage division.

"He will be here for an interim until Mr. Dominguez finds a permanent substitute to fill the general manager's position," Fisher said.

His immediate departure, he said, is also because of the company's (Marco Polo) expansion.

"The company is expanding very quickly, though from 11 hotels which will be 15 soon. I will be assigned in the planning and training of employees in Hongkong," Fisher added.

The Marco Polo Hotel Davao is undergoing room development renovations and refurbishing. Cafe Marco is also under renovation that will be open by the end of June or first week of July.

"It is a great opportunity to be here for two weeks or for a month until a permanent replacement will be assigned," said Thomas Pfordte, Fisher's interim substitute.

Sa akala mo ba para sa mga regular pinoy 5 libong racket eh madaling bilihin? Ilang sakong bigas na kaya yan and how about the court? Is it easy to build a tennis court and if you can find one, you need either become a member first or pay per play. Kaya ba yan ng grassroot natin? Hindi, kaya malabo tayong maka develop ng de kalidad na tennis as only a few can afford it. Yung soccer kahit backyard lawn lang pwede na makapag praktis ang mga bata, parang basketbol baga na basta may open space lang kahit konti pwede nang gawing court kahit lupa pa yan.

Re: India buhi gyud ang cricket because they play anywhere as long there is space, and that's the same thing i'm espousing regarding soccer.

sa western mindanao... active ang tennis where you can see it through Patrombon... halos lahat ng municipality sa west may mga tennis court... at free... so hindi problema ang facilities, maybe the racket.. pero kung ikaw amahan, makaayo na sa bata nimo kulang sa height (di pwede basketball), invest ka into sports... kaysa puro Dota, CS, Plants and Zombies, FArmville, Cafeworld, Mafia Wars ug uban pa...

New place for fun, excitement

By Charles Raymond A. Maxey

THERE'S a new oasis for fun and excitement that the people of Davao City can explore, and it's just near the heart of the metropolis.

Yes, Dabawenyos who want to sneak away from the bustling city life and want to relax and smell the fresh air of the countryside with their families can just motor anytime to the D' Leonor Inland Resort Waterpark and Wavepool.

The newest attraction in Davao City, D' Leonor Inland Resort is nestled in Purok 5, Barangay Communal in Cabantian. With an area of 26 hectares, the place is the biggest inland resort in Davao City.

What makes the place so attractive is its proximity--only a 10-minute ride from the Davao International Airport and good 15-minute ride from downtown Davao.

Mercy Lim, the resort's events and marketing director, swears that the D' Leonor Inland Resort will become the center of amusement in this part of the region with its excellent facilities.

The resort had its soft opening last May 14 which was attended by the owners led by Leonora Lim, Davao City Councilor Al Ryan Alejandre, actor Marvin Agustin and several invited guests, including those from the media.

Although construction of major facilities is still ongoing, the resort is already drawing customers as its cottages, zipline, fishing area, an airconditioned chapel and a basketball court are already available.

There will also be a wavepool, raging river, cable cars, restaurant and mini zoo to be constructed within the year for customers to enjoy. The wavepool is targeted to be completed before the end of May.

Currently, the mini zoo houses three ostriches. Mercy Lim said additional animals like baby tiger, lion, bear, and deer will be brought in soon.

Lim told journalists recently that D' Leonor Inland Resort is aiming to become the premier tourist spot in Davao City. With its impressive facilities, it will not be difficult for management to realize its goal.

Properties in Davao City Near to Downtown

Lot prices in Woodridge is now pegged at P9,000/sqm to P12,500, you will get lucky if owner pays for CGTax, most likely they get net of P8,500/sqm, rest of transfer taxes, CGT & DS will be paid by the buyers.

http://davaoestate.com/area_almostdowntown.htm

Ano? Wow....my brother just bought a 4-year old house on a 250 sqm lot and the lot adjacent to it (for future expansion) for P6.5M.

Pero raw lot for P9K/sqm - too much naman seguro yun, no?

Hey Vic,

Well, I suppose. It's market driven pricing. At those prices, it probably would drive away speculators - which is a good thing in my mind.

If one is willing to buy raw land at P9K to P12.5K per sqm then you should be a serious enough buyer/investor/builder... Speculators would have come in at P3K?

Anyway, I just learned that the Ateneo's GS and HS is up again - and a lot of the new students are from out of Davao...their parents are natural buyers of those condominiums sprouting up all over...

I also know a couple of wealthy CDOers who have bought or seriously thinking of buying condominiums...these are old family CDOers. Means our market includes them...

The market seems Mindanao wide. Most business people i know from other provinces had their kids studying in Davao and they usually invest on housing instead of just renting.

Indeed DC's real estate is market driven as more and more people from not only Mindanao but Luzon specifically Manila have come in droves and chose to settle in Davao lately. Even my cousins from CDO opted to get their education here and never came back to their home city. An uncle from the same city scoured DC for a location of his business. Had he not passed away he would have moved his family here and reunited with his brothers.

Going back to real estate, would you believe some houses at Woodridge are in the sellers' market right now for a staggering price of 20 mil pesos. And to think a decade ago the bare lots of this subdivision were only sold for 3.5k. It's really unbelievable. I'm not sure if I can even afford to buy from there now.

Unique drinks bar caters to both lovers of coffee and juices

Happy Lemon has unusual concoctions that deliver both caffeine and fruity refreshment

ROCK SALT and cheese in a choco shake, Yakult smoothie with a squeeze of lemon, iced latte with taro – that’s ube for you – these unusual combinations are for the curious ones who are willing to depart from their usual blended drinks to try something more adventurous.

Happy Lemon offers these mixes in its two branches, at Greenhills, San Juan, and Eastwood Mall, QC. Think of Happy Lemon as a hip, upgraded lemonade stand that caters to both coffee and tea lovers, and those who want something fruity and fresh.

The drinks bar was established in Hong Kong in 2006, and was brought to the Philippines by a group of friends composed of Kelvin Gaisano (who also put up Red Mango frozen yoghurt here), his sister Kristine, Smart Gilas basketball player Chris Tiu, Andres See, Charles Chua, Wesley Padilla and Edward Go. They wanted to have a wholesome place where people could hang out in and enjoy the drinks.

Rock-salt smoothie

The Rock Salt Cheese series is the surprise bestseller since the first branch opened at the Promenade last year, Kelvin said. It is available in green tea, cocoa or coffee base, topped with melted cream cheese with a dash of rock salt.

“It initially sounds weird, but people order it out of curiosity, and we’re glad they like it,” Kelvin said.

Other bestsellers are the Milk Tea with Black Pearl Sago, Lemon Yakult Mousse and Crispy Cocoa Matcha with Brown-Sugar Jelly. Prices range of drinks is from P60-P110.

Diners are drawn to Happy Lemon because of its pop-art vibe. The store is done in bright colors, mostly in yellow, with some blue, green and orange accents. There’s a cartoon logo of a winking smiling kid which reminds you to be “Happy Every Day.”

By the counter is a colorful spread of toppings you can add to your drinks – nata de coco, seaweed jelly, aloe jelly, pudding, puff cream, beans, taro.

Healthy variety

Cager Tiu said that whatever they serve locally would be the same stuff one would have in over 100 branches in Hong Kong, China, Singapore and Australia.

“We only use fresh lemon and there are no preservatives,” Tiu said. “The drinks are pretty healthy, especially the tea- and fruit-based ones.”

Under the Lemon Series are infusions of Lemon Black Tea, Lemon Green Tea, Lemon Honey with Seaweed Jelly, Lemon Peppermint with Nata de Coco, Lemon Yoghurt with Aloe. These citrusy and not-so-sweet drinks are available hot or cold.

Milk tea lovers can have their fix with black pearl sago, Mesona jelly, pudding, or Oreos for a cookies-and-cream flavor, which kids love. Other varieties are Malt Milk Tea, Roasted Milk Tea with Pearl Sago with strong brewed-tea base, Crispy Cocoa Milk Tea with Brown Sugar Jelly and Cocoa Milk Tea with Puff Cream.

Tiu said one of his favorites was the Lemon Yakult, a sweet-tangy smoothie under the Mousse Spin menu, which includes Mango and Orange Yoghurt, and Matcha with Adzuki Beans.

Coffee love

Happy Lemon seeks to compete with specialty coffee shops, said See, who’s in charge of operations: “The Philippines is a coffee country and we also serve coffee drinkers something new on top of their favorites.”

There’s the usual Latte and Mocha Cocoa. Intriguing items are Italian Blood Orange Black Coffee, Grapefruit Black Coffee and Latte with Taro, available hot or cold.

For summer, Happy Lemon offers the Poppin’ Bobba, a blueberry-based drink with “bobbas” or yoghurt beads that looks like sago but pops in your mouth.

For those laying off the caffeine, Happy Lemon offers its specialty Drinks such as Passion Fruit Yoghurt with Aloe, Blueberry with Nata De Coco, Mango Green Tea, Yakult Green Tea, Grapefruit Green Tea With Aloe.

Diners usually order drinks to go to take to the cinema, said Kristine, and while there are no plans to serve food yet, she suggested snacks that go well with drinks such as siomai, nachos, chips and sandwiches.

Paris Hilton shop a big hit in Davao

DAVAO CITY – No, Paris Hilton has not flown to this city yet.
Her handbags and accessories, however, have arrived and are attracting the city folk and visitors.
The handbags and other products of Paris Hilton are available at the newly opened Paris Hilton shop at the Abreeza Mall in Davao City.
The store opened just recently and another one maybe opening soon in Metro Manila, this time with world boxing icon Manny Pacquiao and wife Jinky as possible partners.
The Pacquiaos hobnobbed with the wealthy Hilton heiress and model after the boxing champ’s fight against American champion Shane Mosely in Las Vegas last May 7.
During their meeting at the MGM Grand Hotel, the Pacquiaos invited Paris to visit the Philippines, including the province of Sarangani.
The Davao City shop is the first branch of the boutique outside Metro Manila, and only the third branch in the Philippines, according to ABS-CBN.
The store displays bags, fashion accessories, including earrings, wallets, belts, caps and perfumes which were originally designed by Hilton herself.
The prices of the of earrings range from P1,000 and up, while bags cost around P7,000.
According to store manager Alvin Salcedo, although the items are a little bit pricey, people have already bought a lot of items since the store opened.
Salcedo was quoted by ABS-CBN as stating that he and brand manager Donnibelle Estil believe the store will be a hit among Davaoeños.

Scrumptiously Cru
Written by: Garcia , Ian C.
Thursday, 02 June 2011

THE moment I learned that Manila Marriot Hotel uses Malagos Cheese (and proudly makes it known to their hotel and restaurant clients) was the moment I fell in love with this modern hotel strategically located just right across NAIA Terminal 3 and a mere 10-15 minute drive to Makati.

I fell in love with it even more when our good friend, Michelle Garcia, Marriott’s director of marketing and communication, invited me and my friends, Allan and Jun, for dinner at the hotel’s ultra-modern Cru Steakhouse.

Slightly concealed from one corner on the ground level, we took a short stroll along a gallery behind Marriot Café, their all-day buffet dining resto, to reach the steakhouse. The moment you enter Cru, everything seems to whisper.

In one corner, you can spot their collection of wines from across the globe elegantly stacked in wooden shelves, and at the center, a flaming grill in their open kitchen that seems to welcome its guests as they come in. The interior design alone prompts you that you just got yourself into an urbane dining experience.

Yes, this was where I started to feel that I was not in fastfood land anymore. Cru is that kind of restaurant where every food is meticulously prepared and where chefs take extra efforts in making sure that you won’t just have a sumptuous meal but an unforgettable dining experience. That’s what Chef Rafael Hubilla, the resto’s Chef de Cuisne, just did for us.

After settling in, in a matter of minutes our appetizers were served – Louisiana Crab Cake, Ocean Shrimps and Baby Spinach. Honestly, the tasty starters alone started to fill a considerable nook in our tummies. Everything was just perfect, from the taste to the presentation – enough to make you want for more.

After about half an hour of chitchat while munching on our yummy appetizers, the stars of Cru finally arrived: a 250 gram US prime rib eye steak, a 250 gram Tajima wagyu steak from Australian sirloin, and 250 gram Australian grain-fed Angus tenderloin. Seeing all these served right infront of us started to make our mouths water. Like, literally.

Cru’s steaks were exquisitely tender and rightly flavorful from all the spices and herbs that they used. By the way, they hand-cut and hand-season their steaks. For a meatlover like me, everything was just cooked to perfection.

In Cru, an order of steak is accompanied by a side dish. Thus, ours were served with generous portions of grilled Portobello mushrooms and spicy wedges, potato and onion gratin, and black truffle risotto with oven roasted marble potato, all of which went impeccably well with each type of steak. While I loved the Portabello mushroom the most, my companions fancied the divine consistency of the black truffle risotto.

We savored every nibble, enjoying the flavors of steaks and side-dish. Cru’s Steakhouse manager, the pretty Patricia Lagman, who reminded us of Dayanara Torres with her cute Latina accent, also made sure we enjoyed every minute of our meal.

Of course, a meal is not complete without Cru’s delightful desserts. We capped ours with lovely servings of grand Cru chocolate mousse, passion fruit crème brulee, and sugar-free cheesecake, just the right amount of sweetness to top a fantastic dinner.

We wrapped everything up in a little more than two hours. Thanks to Cru’s friendly and very attentive staff, who ensured that the waiting in between courses was pleasant. The dinner was just long enough to keep my rendezvous with my friends fun and relaxed, and enough for us to enjoy, savor and suck in the Cru experience.

Cru Steakhouse is open for dinner only from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. daily except Monday. If you’re in the Metro and in search for great steaks, make Cru a part of your dining itinerary. And yes, they also serve Malagos Cheese in their appetizers!

The Miracle of Davao City
Sign of the times: Davao City's blanket no-smoking campaign is having a healthy, unprecedented effect on its population. Picture: BT/Chiew Chee Phoong
Chiew Chee Phoong
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Sunday, August 30, 2009
THE Airbus 319 of Cebu Pacific made its final descent to Davao International Airport. The flight attendant announced upon landing, "We would like to inform you of the Smoking Ban in Davao City. Smoking is strictly prohibited in public places of the city, including the airport and its premises. Let's help make Davao Smoke-Free."

Amazing, isn't it? This was the first time that I had visited a smoke-free city. To date, Davao is still the only city amongst the 1,631 cities and municipalities in the Philippines that is strictly implementing the Tobacco Regulation Act of 2003.

During my eight days' stay, I didn't see a single soul smoking in any food establishments, dance halls, night clubs or even in the parks, streets and markets, which are deemed public places. Representatives from many cities in the Philippines, and a group from Vietnam, have all come to learn from Davao. A delegation from Bangkok will visit there in September.

One night along some busy streets, I did see some "tak tak" boys selling cigarettes from vendors, but there seemed to be more sellers than buyers. To top it off, after making a concerted effort, I still failed to spot any transactions being concluded.

Amid my amazement, I dropped by Davao City Hall to interview Dr Domilyn Villarreiz, the chief of the Anti-Smoking Task Force, to find out the secret behind this huge success in the largest city of Mindanao, home to 1.4 million people.

Chiew: When did you start the comprehensive ban on smoking in Davao?

Villarreiz: The law was implemented on November 9, 2002. In May 2002, we started our public information campaign, and in November we started apprehending violators.

What is the fine for smoking?

The fine is 500 to 10,000 pesos ($15-$300). The first offence is about 500 to 1,000 pesos ($15-$30), the second offence is 1,000 to 5,000 pesos ($30-$150), and the third offence is 5,000 to 10,000 pesos ($150-$300).

And for the establishments who do not comply with the requirements, the fine will be about 5,000 pesos ($150) or not more than 30 days imprisonment, or both, plus the cancellation or revocation of their business permits and other licences.

At the beginning, were there a lot of difficulties or problems?

Yes, of course. Some owners and managers of establishments, especially night spots, night clubs and coffee shops, thought that because they catered to customers who drink alcoholic beverages or drink coffee, that those customers smoke at the same time. But of course they adjusted to it later because we stressed to them that this was for the good of their customers, and that most Filipinos were non-smokers.So you are backed up by this majority?

Yes. We had a silent minority before, but now they help us in our advocacy, and help us to educate smokers that these places do not allow smoking.

Actually, we are not saying that you should stop smoking right away. Since we started this campaign seven years ago, three things have happened to our smokers.

One, they have stopped smoking because there are only a few places where they can smoke. Also, cigarettes are not readily accessible because only a few places sell cigarettes. We don't allow the sale of cigarettes within 100 metres of schools and recreational facilities. So smokers have to look for places that sell cigarettes.

Second, they have reduced the number of sticks they puff every day. So, if they were not able to stop, they will cut down. A person who smoked 10 sticks per day will cut down to eight or five.

The third thing is that we now have disciplined and responsible smokers, which means that if they go out, they look for a place where they are allowed to smoke. They don't just smoke anywhere.

We have received information from our media partners that when our smokers go to other cities like Cebu, which allows smoking anywhere, they do not smoke inside the buildings even if they are allowed to. Instead, they go outside to look for a smoking area.

Just now I saw a no-smoking sign in the park.

Yes, there is no smoking in the park. Even though it is an open area, it is still considered a public place. We include places where people converge or congregate, such as parks, public playgrounds and markets.

So, in parks where people converge during programmes, rallies and concerts, we don't allow people to smoke in them.

People's Park is one of our model parks in Davao for being smoke-free, where we do not allow people to bring in cigarettes, lighters and matches.

Do you search them?

There are guards who do it. One time, the mayor and the task force torched, for symbolic purpose, all the cigarettes that had been confiscated.Did you face any resistance or any lobbying from cigarette companies? Did they put any pressure on you?

They wrote a letter to the mayor but of course we did not respond to it. There is a certain World Health Organisation article called the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, or FCTC, to which the Philippines and I think also Brunei is one of the signatories.

This (FCTC) says that there should be no tobacco industry interference in any law or any activity of a member party. So we should not engage in any activity with the tobacco industry, and they should not interfere with the implementation of any law.

Also, we are reminded of the corporate social responsibility of the tobacco industry, and that we should not accept any money for any activity from the industry.

Meaning they cannot be the sponsors of any activity?

Correct, not even concerts or any Formula One race. They should not be in it anymore. I think about 163 countries are signatories to the FCTC.

What is the organisational structure of the task force?

The Mayor of Davao is the head. He is the honorary chairperson and is represented by the city administrator during our meetings. I'm the co-chairperson, and under us are the City Health Office as well as the legal, business, tourism, public works and city information offices and the Davao City Police Office.

How do you enforce the law?

Each of these offices has representatives, and we conduct inspections of establishments. We have a flowchart on how to do things. The first step is being inspected by city engineers to ensure compliance by establishments.

Did any non-governmental organisations help?

Aside from the task force, I have set up the Association of Smoke-free Davao Advocates, which is comprised of religious leaders including Muslim leaders, community leaders and health professionals who helped us with our public information campaign, advocacy and monitoring of establishments. We have more than 1,000 members and they are very active in monitoring.

We also have the support of medical organisations, especially in conducting lectures in schools, communities and work places.

Do you have visitors coming to Davao to find out about, or maybe even attempt to emulate, your model?

Actually, a lot of visitors come to the city. Last year we had visitors from Hanoi. They just came for a study tour. In May this year there were seven groups from Metro Manila, and this September we will have visitors from Bangkok. They want to see how we are doing it in Davao.

It feels very good when we visit the restaurants here, with not even one smoker in sight.

People will stare at you if you smoke in the restaurants. And if somebody smokes inside, they can actually call 911.

Our 911 also provides support when it comes to smoking violation. Anything that requires police activity, apprehension, law violation, 911 will respond.

They don't have 911 (to respond to anti-smoking) in other cities of Philippines, only Davao City.

Smoking is still a smoker's choice. Where can people smoke in this city?

They can smoke only in their houses. When we started (in 2002), the mayor said in his speech during the launch that if you want to smoke, there are three places that you can smoke in Davao: You climb Mt Apo (the highest peak in the Philippines); you cross the sea to the other islands; or you can go to the cemetery, because that is where you are going anyway.

Published in the Sun.Star Davao (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/feature/2011/05/29/new-place-fun-excitement-158193) newspaper on May 30, 2011.

that Marvin Agustin caused a storm in a teapot when he arrived late for the ''soft opening ceremony'' stayed for awhile and left in a hurry and forgot to cut the ceremonial ribbon because ''he had to attend to other matters/business.Whereas it was RDL/DeLeonor who sponsored for him to come to Davao and paid him P150K.Mercy Lim was fuming mad.How disgraceful of him.:ohno:

A 'bucket-attitude' at KFC Abreeza (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/lifestyle/2011/06/03/bucket-attitude-kfc-abreeza-159235)

KENTUCKY Fried Chicken (KFC) opens its doors to the public in time for the opening of Abreeza Mall on May 12.

The new branch, which is on the ground floor of the sprawling Abreeza Mall, is the 9th KFC branch in Mindanao and the 4th in Davao City.

One thing about KFC, businesses are bent on bucking the odds to be more conscious of the things going on around them. It all starts with the introduction of the first "bucket attitude" store in Visayas and Mindanao.

According to Sylner L. Lopez, KFC Restaurant marketing officer, the "bucket attitude" concept was first introduced at the SM Mall of Asia on May 6, 2010.

Lopez said, "Hindi lang products ang labanan, it is also about ambiance of a good looking store.

With a new hip design, KFC Abreeza boasts of value added services like a charging nook for iPod and almost all brands of cellphones. Soon it will be a wi-fi hotspot operating 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Over at the counter are dual screen POS wherein customers can view a breakdown of their orders. KFC Abreeza also injects local flavors with a mural of Davao City tourist landmarks.

With a 150-seating capacity, Lopez assures products quality, customer satisfaction, and maintained international standards the brand is known for.

Popular for its Original Recipe chicken, Extra Crispy, Twister, and Colonel's Crispy Strips chicken with homestyle sides, KFC also offers a line of salads and sandwiches, side dishes and desserts like Krushers.

With the promise to Dabawenyos, KFC is still holding tight to the assurance that it will sell great food in a fast, extremely friendly environment that appeal to a wide range of consumers.

The company was founded as Kentucky Fried Chicken by Colonel Harland Sanders in 1952, though the idea of KFC's fried chicken actually goes back to 1930. Although Sanders died in 1980, he remains an important part of the company's branding and advertisements, and "Colonel Sanders" or "The Colonel" is a metonym for the company itself.

KFC started its operation in the Philippines in 1967 and now has grown to more than 200 stores nationwide.

In January this year, Yokohama Rubber announced the plan to expand the annual production capacity of the YTPI plant by 2.4 times to 17 million tires from the current 7 million by 2017 (see Yokohama increases tire production in Philippines).

Yokohama Rubber has already signed an agreement with Clark Development Corp. (CDC) to lease 300,000 square meters of the land adjacent to the existing tire plant. The ground breaking ceremony was held at the site for the construction of the new tire plant.

“The expansion of the YTPI is in line with the Phase III starting in 2012 in the Grand Design 100 (GD100), our company's mid-term management plan,” says Yokohama Rubber President Tadanobu Nagumo. “By the 2017 completion of the expansion program, we will make an additional investment worthy of 50 billion yen to expand the total plant area to 460,000 square meters, and achieve a total employment of a strong 5,000 human workforce.”

YTPI was formed in 1996 as a base for manufacturing passenger-car tires for export markets. At present the company manufactures passenger-car and SUV tires with the inner diameters of 13 to 18 inches and exports most of the tires to Europe, North America and ASEAN Countries as consumer products and the rest to North American and Asian automotive manufacturers on an OEM basis.

YTPI is the first international company entering the Clark Freeport Zone. Highly evaluated for its contribution to local economy, society and environmental protection, the company received Outstanding Recognition for Overall Performance Award from CDC consecutively in 2009 and 2010.

MEDIA missed a big piece of business news last week. The Aquino administration, likewise, remained clueless about the fact that a multi-billion dollar project was launched in Davao. Unknown to many, this development can spell the revival of the clinically dead coconut industry.

The project is a joint venture of Anflo, the flagship company of Tony Floirendo, now 92 years old, Toyota and a Korean company. It will use coconut shell, which is normally discarded by copra farmers and coconut gatherers, for the manufacture of sweeteners like Equal or Splenda.

The project launch was attended by Vice President Jejomar Binay.

This venture could actually be replicated in other coconut growing regions, like Quezon, Aurora and the Bicol Region. The Anflo-Toyota-Korean project can manufacture 150,000 tons of sweeteners a year at $130 per ton.

Unfortunately, the President’s communications group did not even notice this.

Maybe the media got drawn on the hype of other places waiting until now if it's true or not the reason they did not notice this big news.

that Marvin Agustin caused a storm in a teapot when he arrived late for the ''soft opening ceremony'' stayed for awhile and left in a hurry and forgot to cut the ceremonial ribbon because ''he had to attend to other matters/business.Whereas it was RDL/DeLeonor who sponsored for him to come to Davao and paid him P150K.Mercy Lim was fuming mad.How disgraceful of him.:ohno:

Then they know what they should do, drop him as an endorser! Hindi naman nila kailangan ang mga 3rd rate actor para mag endorse ah.

Firm to set up small mall to help `resuscitate' street

THE Oroderm Group of Companies is building a strip mall at the stretch of the Claro M. Recto St., one of the busiest streets in the past, as part of its commitment to revive the economic activities of the street.

This will be the second project of the company after it set up a hotel and a medical center at the corner of Claro M. Recto and Rizal Sts. which opened early this year, said Dr. Neil S. Oropesa, president and chief executive officer of the family owned company.

The new project, which is expected to be finished by the end of the year, will stand on the 3,800-square meters as the project will not only house a small shopping mall that will have about spaces to rent it out to locators and the stalls will vary in sizes.

“I personally want to revive this street,” Oropesa said of Claro M. Recto St., a street that in the early 1990s had 36 bank branches as only about 20 of these branches were left. “You make a difference (by trying to revive the street economically),” he said.

Oropesa noticed that the “street was already dying” even when it was among the busiest in the past decade. “I thought maybe I could revive it by investing on properties (in the area),” he said, adding the new project of his company will even have a hotel, which will become the third hotel of the company, which will also have a convention center within.

Although he did not mention how much the company has invested in the street considering that part of the investments were borrowed from the bank, Oropesa said the latest venture would be at least P100 million.

Aside from the spaces and the hotel, there will also be food strip that will be locations of those food stalls that are nearby. “We will invite them (food stalls near the area) to locate in our mall to ensure their security and offer them better atmosphere,” he told the TIMES.

He said the project will also have a convenience store that will cater to the needs of those dormitories and residences near it.

Although some of his relatives warned him in investing in the area considering that there are big malls in the city that have become the attraction, Oropesa said what makes it an attractive investment is because people still walk to establishments within the street, while those who want to go to the malls have to take a ride. “You already have a food traffic (as part of the customer base),” he said.

Its first investment in the place is the 50-room three story Blue Velvet Hotel and Cafe and beside it is the Oroderm Medical Center which is also equipped with medical center facilities that cater not only to those who seek medical attention on dermatological problems, Mr. Oropesa being a dermatologist, but other problems as well, except in emergency cases.

The company already has about 40 branches of Oroderm Clinic in the different parts of the country and its Oroderm Beauty Hotel, the first hotel at the Pichon St. It also has its own laboratory for its beauty products in Laguna.

Oropesa noted that when his first project on the street was completed, other nearby establishments were also renovated. “The economic activities of C. M. Recto St. have started to come back,” he added.
