rodincouch August 12th, 2011, 04:02 PM PAL Ladies Interclub golf tournament revival (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/sports/2011/08/11/pal-ladies-interclub-golf-tournament-revival-172480)
By Imee Garcia
IT IS back. After 25 years of absence, Philippine Airlines has finally decided to revive the PAL Ladies Interclub Golf Tournament, and it is going to be in Davao. The first team captain's meeting was held last August 4 at Rancho Palos Verdes. There were 26 team captains that attended representing 33 teams all in all.
The tournament will be on October 11-14 at Rancho Palos Verdes Golf and Country Club. The ceremonial tee-off will be on October 10, followed by the second team captain's meeting. By the way, there will be a media tournament on October 9.
The participating teams are Alabang CC, Armed Forces of the Philippines GC (formerly Camp Aguinaldo), Manila Golf, Valley Golf, Villamor, Forest Hills Ladies Circle and Wack Wack GC from Manila.
The rest of Luzon teams are Tagaytay Highlands, Tagaytay Midlands, Tagaytay Belle, Sta. Elena, Canlubang Golf CC, Orchard, Manila Southwoods, Eagle Ridge, Mt. Malarayat Golf CC and Riviera.
From Visayas, enetered are Bacolod Golf, Negros Occidental Golf CC, Victorias Golf CC, Iloilo Golf CC, Cebu Country Club and Mactan Island GC
The Mindanao teams include Apo Golf CC, Del Monte GC and Rancho Palos Verdes Golf CC.
There are also teams coming from outside the Philippines, namely South Bay GC (Los Angeles), Guam Ladies Golf, The Kooka-Birdies Team Australia, Orange County club (Japan), Team Japan by Bristol Hill and FNT Golf (Korea).
FYI, the format is based on the PAL Seniors Interclub. There will be 4 divisions: Championship Division, Founders Division, Sportswriters Division and Friendship Division. There are 6-8 players per team and there are 32 teams. So, expect around 200 golfers with smaller bellies, smoother skin, and hairless legs invading the fairways of Rancho Palos Verdes this October. Oh, smaller framed bodies, too, but with bigger mouths, so please handle them with extra care.
The last time a big tournament for ladies was held in Davao was in the late 90s. It was the Southern Ladies Open which was held at the Apo Golf & Country Club. I was the head of the organizing committee and assisted by Liloh Evangelista. And I competed and also won first place in Class B. I remember how stressful it was to be both a player and an organizer. Whew! But it was very gratifying.
The Chairperson of the PAL executive committee of the Ladies Interclub is Dina May Flores. Jesus G. Garcia is the co-chairperson. Felix Cruz Jr. is the adviser. Buddy Resurreccion is the tournament director. Thank you to Atty. Domeng Duerme of PAL, to Ms. Lalaine Navarro, head of secretariat, and Jonathan Gesmundo of corp comm for supplying me with info about the tournament.
By the way, you may be wondering about the winners of last week's World Golf Championship Bridgestone Invitational. Tiger lost again. Guess who won? Adam Scott! And who caddied for him? Tiger's former caddie, Steve Williams!
I am sure Stevie has a huge smile on his face. In fact, on the net, I read that he said "the victory was the "most gratifying" win of his 33-year caddying career, and that it concluded the "greatest week' of his life." My comment: Really, Mr. Williams, the most gratifying? Psshhh, yes, he can say whatever he wants. It is expected that he will say things like that. After all, he felt bitter when Tiger fired him.
Regardless of whether Tiger finished in first place or in last place, he is still Tiger. And Tiger remains to be a star, correction, "The Star!"
I read this on the net: "He (Tiger) has lost his family, lost his carefully conceived image, lost many of his endorsements and lost the invincibility that once defined his golf game. He is on a desperate search to rediscover it." So true. Tiger, I am by your side. It is because of you that golf got more interesting. And in times of trouble, I will remain your humble fan.
Last week, kawawa naman si poging winner, Adam Scott. His caddie, Steve Williams, got more media coverage. This week, do not forget--it is the PGA Championship, the fourth and final major of the year. Go Stevie! Hehehe.
One more thing, if you have time today, drop by at Apo Golf Club to watch the final round of the Philippine Golf Tour ICTSI Apo Invitational. Go and cheer for our local pros. Possible winners: Juvic Pagunsan, Jhonnel Ababa, Elmer Salvador, Jerson Balasabas, Tony Lascuna, Elmer Saban, Eddie Salvador and more.
Happy golfing.

skyion August 12th, 2011, 06:48 PM the other day, we witnessed something horrid that we didn't expect to happen in Davao, but it did.
sa isang commercial area ng Toril may matandang lalaki na natumba sa kalye, ilang beses na ginustong tumayo pero natumbang muli, while nearby some people were just staring at him, pero wala ni isang tumulong. some customers and tinderas from carinderias sneaked outside to watch him, but none tried to help him or called someone more able to do so, may mga HS female students most likely from that school near Toril PLDT office who went out to watch him like entertainment, not only did they not try to help him, but pinagtawanan pa ang matanda.
my friend who hailed from Luzon was so disturbed by what he saw, after sometime na wala ni isang tao sa palibot na tumulong, nagdecide kaming i-park na lang ang sasakyan para tulungan yung matanda (we were on the road slowed by traffic), only then may tao, isang babae sa dinami ng lalaki duon, finally tumulong sa matanda, which took some minutes as the old man struggled.
in his place south of Manila where he lived, people there were known for being "matapang" and short tempered, pero sabi niya nagtutulungan sila kapag kababayan, and just a day before the incident we watched on the internet his mother's island province somewhere in Luzon and it was a beautiful place even an international movie was set there, he narrated how amazingly even humans and animals in the island lived harmoniously, that's why I believed he meant serously when he said na kahit barumbado sa kanila tutulong sa matandang iyon kung nasa lugar nila.
then that night may na-encounter pa kaming mekaniko sa downtown na parang nanggantso kung sumingil. just days before he also witnessed a terrible road accident that involved an abusive yet well-patronized uso-uso jeep from Toril. sabi ng kaibigan ko kung ganyan ba ang mga dabawenyo, I told him siguro isolated case lang mga yun.
the Mayor and VM are known pinagtatanggol ang mga masa, maybe they would ponder kung ang iba ganun man din lang ang mga asal, for being pampered by their attention some seem to be getting abusive, callous, insensitive (with some even making fun) to the old man's plight.
none of us really expected that such a thing would happen in Davao, but it did - in Toril.
Yre August 12th, 2011, 07:19 PM ^^ That's very shameful kung naging ganyan na ang mga kababayan ko...:ohno:

That's sad .
My brother and I own a restaurant in Toril . Our family also operates a small resort in Dumoy.
That's just unbelievable.
I'm so sorry it happened in Davao City.

Thanks for the pics of the Abreeza Mall.
I was there maybe 5 times last month.
It's pretty mall.
Lots of walking though from the entrance to the food court and theater.
When there's a free show at the ground floor , it can really get loud.
We dined at the Moon Cafe, and three other restaurants.
They were just ok ( franchises ).
Most of the restos are struggling I think.
Way too many restaurants to pick and not enough patrons.
It's going to be tough for some to survive is the word I got .
When the new SM Lanang opens, it's going to get tougher for Abreeza stores and restos.
I hope they all thrive.

my friend who hailed from Luzon was so disturbed by what he saw, after sometime na wala ni isang tao sa palibot na tumulong, nagdecide kaming i-park na lang ang sasakyan para tulungan yung matanda (we were on the road slowed by traffic), only then may tao, isang babae sa dinami ng lalaki duon, finally tumulong sa matanda, which took some minutes as the old man struggled.
in his place south of Manila where he lived, people there were known for being "matapang" and short tempered, pero sabi niya nagtutulungan sila kapag kababayan, and just a day before the incident we watched on the internet his mother's island province somewhere in Luzon and it was a beautiful place even an international movie was set there, he narrated how amazingly even humans and animals in the island lived harmoniously, that's why I believed he meant serously when he said na kahit barumbado sa kanila tutulong sa matandang iyon kung nasa lugar nila.
then that night may na-encounter pa kaming mekaniko sa downtown na parang nanggantso kung sumingil. just days before he also witnessed a terrible road accident that involved an abusive yet well-patronized uso-uso jeep from Toril. sabi ng kaibigan ko kung ganyan ba ang mga dabawenyo, I told him siguro isolated case lang mga yun.
the Mayor and VM are known pinagtatanggol ang mga masa, maybe they would ponder kung ang iba ganun man din lang ang mga asal, for being pampered by their attention some seem to be getting abusive, callous, insensitive (with some even making fun) to the old man's plight.
none of us really expected that such a thing would happen in Davao, but it did - in Toril.
May mga tao talagang ganyan. Sarap pagsasapakin!
BarPa August 13th, 2011, 05:25 AM Lumads to showcase culture in Kadayawan (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/local-news/2011/08/12/lumads-showcase-culture-kadayawan-172666)
ORGANIZERS of the Kadayawan sa Dabaw 2011 said they have been in constant consultation with Davao lumads to ensure their participation in festival events.
"We have consulted the deputy mayors of the different tribes," said Maria Felisa Marques, 26th Kadayawan sa Dabaw festival director.
Have something to report? Tell us in text, photos or videos.
Like previous Kadayawan festivals, this year's celebration will also showcase cultural representations of lumads -- their houses, music and food.
Each tribe is given a specific day to highlight and present their cultural heritage to visitors and fellow Dabawenyos.
Marques said due to budgetary constraints, they have agreed that a structural representation of their homes will be showcased at the People's Park and each tribe will be given slots to perform either their cultural dances or songs at Rizal Park.
"Lahat ng tribu maipakita ang kultura sa pag-awit at sa pagsayaw meron din kami mga schedule sa airport na mag perform para salubungin ang mga bisita na pupunta dito sa atin," said Nicanor Mohammed, deputy mayor of the Kalagan tribe.
"Palit-palit kami ng schedule simula August 18 hanggang 19 may mga performances kami doon sa Rizal Park," said Randy Usman of the Maranao tribe.
Though both deputy mayors would also like to bring back the days when they were given the chance to showcase their tribe delicacies, they said that maybe next year they will again be given the chance to let visitors and Dabawenyos taste their food. (Carmelle Marie Harrow)

I think d pa maxado nadidiskobre ng mga namamasyal ung locations ng ibang restos... most of the restos are punuan naman most of the time at d pa ako nakakakita ng nababakanteng resto... with the techno hub, hotel and condo in the pipeline, d magiging problema ung lack of patrons... :)

Book on Davao to be launched during Kadayawan Festival
August 12th, in Features by Apryl Galang
Anvil Publishing in cooperation with National Bookstore and Bistro Rosario launch the latest addition to its City Series entitled DAVAO WE KNOW, an anthology of nineteen essays by residents of the city that is best known for its luscious fruits, its exotic flora and its mild and balmy weather. The book will be launched at the tail end of the Kadayawan festival on August 23, 6pm in the newly opened National Bookstore in Abreeza Mall.
Edited by writer and teacher Lolita Lacuesta, Davao We Know is a collection of nineteen essays by an interesting mix of Davaoeños, both homegrown and migrant. In her introduction, Lacuesta explains the essence of the book thus, “(it) is a response to and a record of the change in the life of the city and province. It is a rendering of the narrative of the place and an explanation of its history expressed personal terms, so that those who have come to call themselves Davaoeños will know a bit more of the life of the place, there being a dearth of accessible materials about Davao.”
The book reveals many things about the city that even their folk are unaware of. Readers will learn that in Davao, more Filipino lives were lost than in any other place in the country during World War II. They will learn of how another author saw the family business engulfed in flames one harrowing day in February 1964, when the entire main commercial section of the city was reduced to ashes. Readers will also learn of how it was to be tortured by the military or to feel threatened by salvaging or to feel courageous for singing “Bayan Ko” during the dark days of martial law.
Davao We Know features essays by – Jo Bacani Angeles, Tita Lacambra Ayala, Nenita Belda Azarcon, Pribhu Dhalamal Balchand, Renato S. Basa, Jose F. Campo, Ernesto I. Corcino, Fe del Rosario Dacudao, Karl M. Gaspar, CSsR, Lolita R. Lacuesta, Cynthia Nograles Lumbera, Margarita Marfori, Patria Garcia Montemayor, Marcelino E. Payumo, Aida Rivera-Ford, Michael L. Tan, Ting Tiongco, Josie C. Tionko and Macario D. Tiu.
The Anvil City Series consists of four books on Manila, Cebu, Baguio and now, Davao. Forthcoming releases will be Dumaguete and Quezon City. All titles are available in all National Bookstores, Bestsellers and Powerbooks branches.

The restos in Abreeza are like Davao traffic, they have rush hours. There are certain time periods when almost all restos are jumpack with patrons. Plus, as one forumer said, once the nearby condos, hotel, technohub and of course when the people starts to get used to go dining in the new restos in town they will be fine.

skyion August 13th, 2011, 06:21 PM your friend I think was overly generalizing things. sorry.
I'd put my trust, safety-wise, anytime in Davao, than any place else here in the Philippines.
of course he wouldn't otherwise that would be a myopic thing to do, it was just an outburst after witnessing that disturbing incident na sunud-sunod pang negative events, nature na kasi sa kanya ang matulungin kahit ako tinutulungan na di nag-expect ng kapalit, that's why I understood his reaction.
after months of staying he himself is aware how safe Davao is dahil recently tripping lang nilakad namin from Magsaysay park to Central HS area at night with peace of mind, and he admitted it may not be such if we were in other major urban areas. Galing kami sa Chinatown and seeing how cheap the wares were, even than in Divisoria and Baclaran, and definitely much cleaner, he blurted "I love Davao" (syempre pwera lang dun sa nakita niya sa Toril).
but we both agree, those who did not even attempt to help and ignored the old man, lalo na yung mga engot na pinagtawanan pa siya, is not something to be compromised by principle.

makikitid lang ang mga ganyan, the Mutya ng Kadayawan is not only about physical beauty but also reflect the richness, diversity and uniqueness in culture and races that is Mindanao. :okay:
made me recall how some political analysis viewed pnoys last U.S. elections, when of all the countries in the world surveyed, almost all vied for Obama over warmongering McCain, except for two that stuck out like sore thumbs: Georgia and Philippines. Medyo na analyze nila ang Georgia kasi nagkasosyo pala ito ng arms business sa mga zioniista (na pumalpak when the small country they bullied sought Russia's help).
they found the Philippines intriguing until someone surmised it must be hinted with some pilipinos attachment to bleaching soap and analyzed it must be because for the shallow reason that Obama was black. Some of Obama's harsh critics in the U.S. were also some pinoys that someone even commented they seem to behave like ku klux klan wannabes  :ohno:
no wonder Obama snubbed the Philippine invitation when he toured Asia :ohno:

The Festival of all Festivals

The Manila Bulletin (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/329764/the-festival-all-festivals)
August 7, 2011, 8:00am
MANILA, Philippines — Every third week of August, Davao City comes alive as it celebrates Kadayawan Festival. Now on its twenty-fifth year of celebration, it has become Mindanao’s festival of all festivals.
As the longest-running community festival in Mindanao, Kadayawan has metamorphosed into a grand celebration that honors Davao’s rich cultural heritage and the many blessings bestowed on the city. Kadayawan’s sights and sounds remain unparalleled.
This year, Dabawenyos and visitors can expect a more colorful and exciting Kadayawan Festival as the budget has been increased to P12.5 million compared to last year’s P11 million. The bulk of the budget comes from the private partners which contributed P9.5 million. The city government allocated P3 million for the celebration.
“We can assure the Dabawenyos that they can expect a merrier, more exciting and more colorful Kadayawan this year,” said Maria Felisa C. Marquez, festival director.
For the first time, the city’s prime festival will be organized by the private sector. “The private-public partnership is very visible in this year’s Kadayawan,” said Dr. Maria Lourdes C. Monteverde of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc.
Jason Magnaye, chief of the City Tourism and City Investment Office, said some 250,000 people are expected to flock to the city. “Local, national, as well as international visitors are expected to come to celebrate the festival of all festivals in the city,” he said.
This year, instead of adopting a theme, the organizers launched the tag, “Ten tribes, one vibe.” The 10 tribes refer to the indigenous peoples that inhabit the city, namely: Uvu-Manuvu, Ata, Tagabawa, Matigsalog, K’lata, Sama, Maranao, Maguindanao, Tausug, and Kalagan.
http://www.angdabawenyo.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/logo-kadayawan08-final.png
“I consider Kadayawan as the festival of festivals since it has the most number of cultural activities compared to other festivals in the country,” comments Serapion Metilla, who is from Manila and has seen to the festival several times. “For example, there’s dancing on the streets, the floral float parade, horse fight, durian festival, cultural minorities encounter, flower and garden shows, and many other activities which other parts of the country could not show.”
Indeed, Kadayawan has gone a long way since it started in the 1970s when then Mayor Elias B. Lopez initiated tribal festivals featuring the lumad (native) and the Muslim tribes of Davao City where they showcased their dances and rituals of thanksgiving. Lopez himself was from the Bagobo tribe.
In 1986, the government initiated a program called “Unlad Proyekto Davao,” whose main objective was to unite the Dabawenyos after the turbulent Martial Law era. The festivity was called “Apo Duwaling,” in honor of the three royalties Davao is famous for: Mount Apo (the country’s highest peak), durian (the controversial fruit that smells like hell but tastes like heaven) and waling-waling (touted to be the queen of Philippine orchids).
At that time, “Apo Duwaling” was meant to showcase Davao City as a peaceful destination for other people from all over the country to visit and to do business. This was after the People Power revolution of 1986.
In 1988, then Mayor Rodrigo Duterte renamed the festival as “Kadayawan sa Dabaw.” Kadayawan is derived from the friendly greeting “Madayaw,” a term taken from a Dabawenyo word dayaw which means “good.” It is also used to describe anything that is valuable, superior or beautiful, such as “Kadayawan,” a celebration of life, a thanksgiving for the gifts of nature, the wealth of culture, the bounties of harvests, and the serenity of living.
The Kadayawan Festival honors Davao’s artistic, cultural and historical heritage, its past personified by the ancestral lumads, its people as they celebrate on the streets, and its floral industry as its representatives parade in full regalia in thanksgiving for the blessings granted to the city.
Actually, the celebration interfaces three aspects: tribal, industrial, arts and entertainment. It is a week-long celebration, but the two big parades are often held during weekends. The street dancing, called Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan, is held on Saturday while the floral float parade falls on Sunday.
The street dancing has two main components. The first is the street parade, where performers groove it up while parading along selected points of the city. The second is the showdown, where the very same people perform on the same venue, which has traditionally been San Pedro Street. The parade normally takes place in the morning, the showdown from the afternoon to evening.
The floral float parade, called Pamulak Kadayawan, is a spectacular finale – patterned after the Pasadena Parade of Roses in the United States – where flowers and fruits are set on colorful floats by business establishments, community assemblies and peoples’ organizations as they parade on the streets symbolizing all the bounty sustainably enjoyed by the city’s residents.
Here’s what Dabawenyos will tell you about their festivity:
“Kadayawan is an art form in itself. A festival fit for a local government that tries to position itself as the cultural capital of the Philippines. This is the best time to catch the sights, the sounds, the colors and the scents all mixing together to encapsulate the rich diversity of a place which was long ago described as the garden of the gods.”
Madayaw!

dinabaw August 14th, 2011, 02:53 PM Senator: More bike lanes, please
abs-cbnNEWS.com

MANILA, Philippines - A senator wants bicycle lanes, as seen in the cities of Marikina, Pasig and Davao, to be a common feature in major thoroughfares across the country.
Senator Pia Cayetano, an avid biker herself, filed Senate Bill No. 2396 which mandates local government units to set up bike lanes in their areas of jurisdiction in coordination with the Department of Public Works and Highways.
It also encourages private and public establishments to designate parking spaces for people traveling on bikes.
"SBN 2396 seeks to promote biking, walking as well as other sustainable and alternative modes of transportation that will not only reduce air pollution and traffic congestion, but will also encourage people to adopt a healthy lifestyle," Cayetano said in a statement.
The proposed bill also mandates the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) to come up with a "sustainable transport action plan" that will promote biking, walking or public transportation as a primary mobility option to the general public.
It also envisions the creation of a "bus rapid transit system" which will organize buses into one transportation system with coordinated schedules, rates and routes.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources, in coordination with the DOTC, meanwhile, will also be made to explore the establishment of a ferry system in navigable bodies of water, Cayetano said.
"The fuel used to run cars and motor vehicles is costing the Philippines more than P1 billion a day. Our dependency on imported fossil fuels has a multiplier effect on the prices of basic commodities, goods and services," she said.
"The heavy reliance on motor vehicles also promotes an unhealthy lifestyle as the public becomes more and more sedentary, refusing to walk or bike even short distances. In practically all of the major cities of this country, this is causing terrible traffic congestion, unnecessary stress and even countless accidents."

the one at the right most is a stand out for me. beautiful costumes are the ones from maguindanao and maranao and the most elegant in their costume is the one from marano. but the ata woman has a x factor and a stand out. shes the most beautiful for me
I also find the eyes of the lady in yellow unique in expression, doleful, mirroring both passive gentleness and inner stength that reflected the culture of our Indigenous Peoples,
the morena lady na katabi niya looks very exotic, as if looking at her you're reminded of various world races all at the same time,
the Moro ladies exhude that rich history of diversity with their mestiza looks, probably from their lineage reminded of olden Arab traders centuries ago.
the contestants all have their unique beauties, and even deeper than that their beauties reflected the richness, the ancient roots, the diversity of Mindanaoan culture and identity  :okay:

kurama August 15th, 2011, 12:37 AM 'Pilipinas Natin' to be launched in Davao
THE Aquino administration's volunteerism campaign dubbed "Pilipinas Natin" will be launched in Davao City on Tuesday to coincide with the city’s week-long celebration of the 26th Kadayawan Festival.
The government's campaign hopes to inculcate among the Davao youth the spirit of volunteerism and encourage them to participate in nation-building.
Kadayawan is an indigenous Bagobo word that refers to bountiful harvest and thanksgiving, the celebration of which is what the festival is all about.
Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte will host the launching of event.
Davao will be the first province where the “Pilipinas Natin” will be launched after it was introduced to the youth during the first anniversary of President Benigno Aquino III held at the Philippine Sports Arena in Pasig City last June 30.
The government prepared a whole day activity for the “Pilipinas Natin” launching, starting with “Kadayawan Para sa Kabataan,” from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
About 2,000 children from ages six to 10 are expected to participate in this event that will be held at the Matina Gym of the University of Mindanao.
There will be educational sessions like story-telling, coloring, feeding program, and games and entertainment.
In the afternoon, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., another event will be held at the Almendras Hall where some 5,000 youth leaders from Davao City schools and communities will gather to hear what is Pilipinas Natin and its purpose.
In the evening, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Mayor Duterte will facilitate the
“Kabayanihan sa Kadayawan,” aimed to encourage Davao’s business sector to raise funds for the permanent relocation of the victims of the recent floods in Davao.
“Pilipinas Natin” will mobilize volunteers to help build houses for the flood victims.
Kadayawan festival was first celebrated in September 1986, a few months after the People Power Revolution.
It was then called Apo Duwaling Festival. Apo referred to Mount Apo in the area and duwaling represented durian fruit and waling-waling orchids, which are also bountiful in the area.
The festival was later renamed into Kadayawan. On May 11, 1995 then Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, father of Sara, signed Executive Order 10 declaring Kadayawan as an annual festival to be celebrated during the third week of August. (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)

Moda Mindanao: Showcasing Mindanao's textile and fiber
YEAR after year, Davao's Moda Mindanaw surprises its avid followers among the fashion industry and the culture and heritage aficionados.

The Moda Mindanaw has indeed gone far—from promoting Davao's indigenous materials to showcasing Mindanaoan textile and fiber. Moda has now evolved to be a platform for young and vibrant Mindanaoan designers to showcase their craft.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3535/3852592630_fed45bce8b.jpg
"We want to showcase what is hip and new but still preserve that Mindanaoan identity in the process," SM Davao mall manager Lynette Lopez said.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2540/3851702425_5d49da27f9.jpg
"We are glad that we are one with the city in this endeavour. Plus, we have confirmed entries from Zamboanga, South Cotabato, Tagum City and the Island Garden City of Samal. That is what makes Moda Mindanaw unique -- its wide reach," she said.

This year, apart from the ladies' street and evening wear, and men's wear categories, the floral bouquet design competition will also showcase the skills and talents of Davao florists.

"It is always refreshing to see new concepts and ideas from the young," organizer Oca Casaysay added. "I am no fashionista but working with talents like what we have (in Davao and Mindanao) is pretty exciting."

eflex August 15th, 2011, 04:07 AM Interactive buffet made affordable
IT HAS been a busy few days for the newly opened Zabs Buffet, the newest buffet dining restaurant in Davao City, with the buzz of the launch on August 8 spreading wide.
******* O. Bajo, chief operating officer of Zabs Buffet located at Paseo de Roxas on Roxas Avenue, said the new dining establishment has its story to tell.
Have something to report? Tell us in text, photos or videos.
Her fondness for buffet service in 5-star hotels prompted her to conceptualize a buffet dining hall with a wide variety of dishes but keeping the costs at the minimum level affordable to everyone.
"Mahilig ako kumain sa 5-star hotels because of business travels. Mas nanghihinayang nga ako bumili ng gamit kesa sa pagkain," ******* said.
With that in mind, ******* and husband Rene Antonio, along with some members of the family, decided to put up Zabs for Dabawenyos to taste quality international and local flavors.
"It's a cheaper, mini version of hotel buffet service with an interactive dining," she added.
Zabs Buffet now occupies the space where Chippens was located, before it transferred last year.
It is an unacceptable approach at Zabs to spoil the taste of its guests. For this reason, offering a rich and multiple selection menu to their guests at only P329 is a most important service. A variety of menu selections is available to have a delightful dining no matter what their habit of taste is.
"Nandito na lahat. We have Japanese, Mongolian, Filipino, pizza, ice cream, and dessert stations," she said.
With the help of managing partners, couple Jayjay and Rhea Sycip, both chefs from Manila, they took cautious consideration of all the important elements and details of opening an open-buffet system -- the need to have a good anticipation of how many guests they will have at any given time, not running low on food items offered, uncompromising quick service, and pricing, among others.
"Everything is written, hindi widow," she said.
Zabs Buffet is now operational with a live-action cooking station and a level of food quality and presentation not presently experienced in non hotel based buffet restos in the city.
Guests may choose from the best of Italian, Japanese, Mongolian food, offered daily. Unlike other buffet restos, ******* added that at Zabs, your choice of shrimps, Mongolian barbeque, pasta, crepe and chicken fajitas will be cooked right before your eyes, the way you want them prepared.
The freshest locally sourced ingredients are brought together in an exciting display of taste and culinary talent. Pasta comes in three kinds of sauce -- pesto, carbonara, and tomato sauce.
The Japanese station offers Teka and California Maki and Sashimi; shrimps can be cooked in either chili garlic or buttered; while clams maybe cooked in tausi or chili garlic.
******* said six days after the grand opening, Zabs imported roast beef has become a bestseller. Apart from the main dishes, their specialty crabs (Crabs ala Zabs) are available ala carte for only P60 per gram that is way cheaper than those in other restos priced at P100 to P120 per gram.
******* said desserts are in wide array as well -- Coffee Jelly, Blue Berry Cheesecake, Oreo cheesecake, Churros, Kreme Brulee, Red Velvet Cake, Brownies and Chocolate Cake. The addictive chewy Choco Chips Cookies has become a favorite for the sweet-tooth.
There is more to Zabs that just buffet dining, she added. It has a conference room that can accommodate 20-30 people and a function area for a maximum of 70 guests. The main dining area has a seating capacity of 80 diners at one time in a Zen inspired ambiance.
*******, a BS in Management Accounting graduate from the Ateneo de Davao University, said it is important to be distinct in a competitive market like Davao by introducing new dishes and innovations every now and then. Loyalty cards are given to diners that will entitle them to a free buffet lunch/dinner after 10 visits. The "Party Now Pay Later" promo gives Dabwenyos opportunity to celebrate special occasions on an installment payment scheme through their credit cards.
By next week, a merienda ala carte will be made available from 3-5 p.m. In time for the celebration of the 26th Kadayawan sa Dabaw festival, ******* said, Zabs will be serving dishes that will promote Davao's best like Tuna panga, fish.
Shrimps, crabs and other seafoods. Desserts will feature Durian cakes, tarts, candies and ice cream topped with Durian preserves.
Though preoccupied with other businesses, ******* is a hands-on CEO particular in customer satisfaction.
"Customers come first. As much as possible I accommodate all their requests," she said adding that she would always remind all 20 Zabs' staff to give customers high quality service. "Sila ang bumubuhay sa amin."
Revealing plans for the future, ******* says she dreams of making Zabs Buffet not just a household name but also in the corporate circle. "We intend to make it a dining landmark that will soon upgrade the buffet dining behavior of Dabawenyos."
Zabs Buffet is open daily for lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and dinner from 6 to 10 p.m. For inquiries, you may call Irish at (082) 2214643, or e-mail zabsbuffet@gmail.com.

Written by: Garcia , Ian C.

The much awaited Davao Night of the MICECON (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Events Conference) 2011 held last August 12, 2011 at the Ayala Terraces in Cebu City was essentially a sneak preview of this week’s Kadayawan Festival made especially for the Cebuanos and the 450 participants of the said convention.
MICECON brought together global, national and local tourism stakeholders (travel agents, tour operators, hoteliers, resort owners, professional congress/exhibition/event organizers, association/corporate executives, destination management companies, airline representatives, local government officials, academe, students and the media) to discuss MICE development and strategies for the country.
According to the Depart of Tourism, Philippines’s total annual foreign visitor arrivals is roughly 3.5 million, with total tourism receipts of about $5 billion, credited to some extent to the growing MICE market.
The four-day conference, organized by the DOT through its marketing arm, the Tourism Promotions Board, was held last August 10 to 13 at the Cebu International Convention Center with the theme “I Share, You Connect, We Change”.
The Davao Night, a concerted endeavor of the City Government of Davao, the Department of Tourism Xl, Davao Tourism Association and the Association of Davao Event Organizers, did not only present the colorful arts and cultures of Davao through the performances of Sinagtala Dance Company and the creations of fashion czar Alfonso “Boy” Guinoo but showcased the MICE capability of the region, a glimpse of what to expect and what Davao can to offer for the said sector. Davao also participated in the booth exhibit at the convention venue.
Prior to the themed dinner, MICECON participants were given a “tubaw” (native hand-woven bandanna with varied designs and multiple uses) as an invitation to the activity. As they arrived at the al fresco venue of the posh Ayala mall, the guests were given an additional token, a “malong” (traditional Mindanawon multi-colored cotton “tube skirt”), which everyone was obliged to wear to take part of the Davao/Mindanao feel of the event.
The highlight of the Davao Night was the turn-over of the symbolic MICECON Key of host-destination Cebu, represented by Governor Gwendolyn Garcia, to Davao, the host destination for MICECON 2013, represented by City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte. Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama also delivered his speech of gratitude during the event.
The Davao Night was a big hit to the participants and onlookers, not only because of Mayor Inday Sara Duterte’s presence (people actually queued up to have their photos taken with her) but also because of the unparalleled pomp and pageantry as showcased in the program directed by multi-awarded choreographer Arnold Alvarez.
This prompted Hans Hauri, chairman of MICECON 2011 to comment in his text message to Department of Tourism XI regional director Arturo Boncato, Jr. that “if this presentation was just a prelude to MICECON 2013, then we can expect the greatest show on earth in Davao”. He also expressed his admiration to the unyielding spirit of the Davao Team, led by City Mayor Duterte, DOT Xl and the ever-active tourism private sector.
Indeed, the Davao Night of MICECON 2011 was a fitting kick-off to the Kadayawan Festival and Davao’s two year preparation for an exciting, eventful and unforgettable MICECON 2013. Kudos, Davao Team!

Interested parties may call 297.6998 for inquiries. Sketch proposals will be accepted until August 8, Monday. Top designs will be featured in the Moda Mindanaw Fashion Show set on August 21, 6 p.m. at SM Davao Event Centre where the final judging will take place.

THE FOUNDER and owner of the Belo Medical Group, Inc., Victoria "Vicki" G. Belo, is considering the establishment of new clinics, taking the brand public, and maybe even letting go of the business.
VICKI BELO wants to keep expanding her beauty business abroad.
The first item remains the priority for the moment and the two others, she told BusinessWorld last week, could follow "when I am tired and as I get older..."
"I am planning to retire by 60. If that happens, I have to start thinking about those things when I am 56," the 54-year-old Ms. Belo said.
"I do not really want to be there [running the business when I am] really old. It is like you are not an ambassador," added the celebrity dermatologist, who also claimed to receive yearly offers from businessmen wanting to buy into the beauty business.
Asked who would be an ideal investor, Ms. Belo replied: "A famous businessman," mentioning Manuel V. Pangilinan and Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala.
Mr. Pangilinan, among others, is chairman of Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co., whose Beneficial Trust Fund has a minority interest in BusinessWorld. Mr. Zobel de Ayala, meanwhile, is chairman and CEO of Ayala Corp.
To date, the Belo Medical Group has eight clinics in Manila and one in Cebu, offering beauty treatments and plastic surgery staples such facelifts. The group is also into personal care products.
"What we are trying to do now is expand abroad already because we are doing very well there. We have two [clinics abroad]; one is Paris, one in California," Ms. Belo said.
"We are thinking maybe Houston [for the next overseas branch]. Since there is a recession, a lot of Americans cannot come here but they have the money to go to Belo."
Belo Medical opened its branch in Glendale, California in June. The Paris office is operated via a partnership with a France-based dermatologist.
"We follow where Filipinos are. My dream, of course, is to open in Beverly Hills," Ms. Belo said, noting that this could push through next year via their partner in Glendale.
The entire Belo Medical operation, she said, is "self-financed ... that is why [expansion] is slow."
From the P8-10 million needed to set up the first branch at the Medical Towers in Makati City in 1990, the group has had to spend $800,000 to $1 million for its overseas offices.
Additional branches, said Ms. Belo, will allow customers to save time and money, pointing out plans to also open clinics in [I]Davao and neighboring Singapore.
"I think I want to open in Davao because I have patients in Mindanao who fly to Manila and they are always traveling," she said.
habagatcentral1 August 15th, 2011, 05:18 PM I'm very quite curious about Paquibato District, one of the largest districts in Davao City. In Google Maps, it seems Paquibato is very hilly. Do we have a photo of the district proper and what are the sights that can be seen there? Also, from downtown Davao, how can we go to Paquibato and how long would the trip last?
Thanks! :)

Davao City in country’s Top Five Billionaire Cities

City annual revenue to
breach P5 B in 2012
BY ROGER M. BALANZA
Davao City could barge into the Top Five list of top revenue earners among cities in the Philippines next year, with city government economic planners projecting annual revenue and budget of P5 billion in 2012.
Mayor Sara Duterte started her term in July last year with marching orders to city tourism and investment generation planners to break borders and go international in their campaign to lure investors and tourists by joining trade and tourism fairs and conventions in other countries.
Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, city mayor for nearly 20 years before the sitting mayor, his daughter, was installed last year, earlier compared the city’s progress to a supersonic plane on flight.
We are unstoppable. We are on flight, he said. The older Duterte first became mayor in 1988, and took over the local government with a budget of a measly P200 million. The city budget this year is pegged at P4.6 billion.
At the Gikan sa Masa Para sa Masa television program on ABS/CBN on Sunday, Vice Mayor Duterte said there was no need for a blueprint or a roadmap for the city’s continuing flight to progress.
Our budget is our roadmap, he said. The Davao City Council, where he sits as presiding officer, last week approved nearly five million pesos in supplemental budget to the approved P4.1 billion annual budget for 2011, bringing the budget for the local government operations close to the P5 billion mark.
Davao City has consistently been in the Top Ten highest revenue earning cities in the country in the list of ‘Billionaire Cities’ of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) during the last five years.
Mindanao’s premier city however could topple down cities in Metro Manila at the tail-end of the list of the country’s top revenue earners based on data pointing to drastic upward trends in local revenue collection and share from the Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA), and the current flood of investments in the city.
The latest entries to Davao City’s investment spectrum are the $500 million Aboitiz Power 300-megawatt coal-fired power plant and the P2.9 Abreeza Mall joint-venture project of Ayala Land and the Floirendo group of companies. The Davao City Investment Promotion Center (DCIP), which spearheads the city’s investment generation campaign, said about P3 billion in investments in high-end housing and property development were poured into the city last year. New investments are expected to further push up local collections on real property and business taxes, the biggest contributors to local tax collection.
Quezon City is considered as the richest city in the country registering total collection of more than P10 billion, followed by Makati City with collections that hover around P9 billion, with the City of Manila landing third richest, and Pasig City in fourth place, according to a 2008 report of the Bureau of Local Government Finance (BLGF).
Battling for the fifth slot are Paranaque City and Davao City. Other cities in the Top Ten list are Cebu, Caloocan, Pasay, Muntinlupa and Mandaluyong.
When figures are in for 2011, we expect our city to land in fifth or fourth, said the City Hall economic planners who begged they not be identified pending release of result of 2011 revenue figures by the BLGF. They add however that based on comparative revenue collection figures of the top cities, the city could easily make it to the Top Five circle.
The good news of the city landing in the Top Five list of ‘billionaire cities’ next year come as Dabawenyos heat up for the coming Kadayawan Festival in mid-month. Kadayawan is the city’s annual festival of thanksgiving.
makasakit sa dughan na pud ni...happy kadayawan everyone! Kudos to Billionaire Davao!:banana::cheers::banana::cheers:

From the P8-10 million needed to set up the first branch at the Medical Towers in Makati City in 1990, the group has had to spend $800,000 to $1 million for its overseas offices.
Additional branches, said Ms. Belo, will allow customers to save time and money, pointing out plans to also open clinics in Davao and neighboring Singapore.
"I think I want to open in Davao because I have patients in Mindanao who fly to Manila and they are always traveling," she said.

MAYOR Sara Duterte-Carpio officially declared yesterday the opening of the Kadayawan celebration—the King of Festivals—with the aim of uniting Davaoeños and recognizing the bountiful blessings in the city.
“We are truly blessed as a city and as a city, we are truly better off than our neighbors so we have to be thankful and grateful for our God almighty for Davao City and our unity,” said Duterte-Carpio in her speech during the ceremony at People’s Park.
She banged the gong thrice signaling the start of the celebration as hundreds of well-wishers including tourists, various sectors and different tribes based on the city watched.
The mayor with the organizers of the festival and tribal chieftains also conducted a ceremonial rite dubbed as “Panaghiusa” through tightening the rope around the totem pole. It showcased durian and waling-waling, the agricultural products that are usually abundant during the festivity.
The rite was participated by the finalists of the Hiyas ng Kadayawan, a beauty pageant that honors the 10 tribes based in the city. The contest proper will be held at Davao City Recreation Center (formerly Almendras Gym) on Aug. 17.
Among the contestants of the beauty pageant are Bernalin Mamboo (Ata Manobo), Norie Fe Licomes (K’lata-Jangan), Leah Jane Benito (Matigsalog), Chenee Hamid (Sama), Zarina Mangadta (Maguindanao), Fauzia Jamsuri (Tausog), Jehel Ann Oboc (Ovu Manobo), Judelyn Ogos (Tagabawa) and Rahima Usman (Maranao).
This also signals the beginning of the various activities that include Hudyakaan in Roxas Avenue, Ho-Chia (Hab-Hab) Festival in Chinatown, Dayaw Dabaw Street Market in Palma Gil St. and Kadayawan Fiesta Sale.
The anticipated Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan will take place on Saturday while the Pamulak Kadayawan would be conducted on Sunday. At least 19 contingents including four participants from outside the city are expected to participate in the Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan.
The foreign tourists, meanwhile, are looking forward to the festivity.
“It is amazing to join the celebration,” said Eva Maemecke, 27, a tourist from Berlin, Germany.
She said it is her first time to witness the festivity and looks forward to the different activities that the city offers during the conduct of the celebration.
Scott Brown, 41, US citizen, said the event is so festive with brilliant colors of costumes and friendly Davaoeños. He further appreciates the non-smoking policy in the city and plans to extend his stay for an additional five months.
“I love Davao City,” he added.
Security assured
The mayor assured the residents of ample security for everyone as she entrusted the security to the Task Force Davao and the Davao City Police Office. “The city and its surrounding areas are under super-mega alert to guarantee public safety during the celebration,” Duterte-Carpio said.
She also enjoined all other military and police units to assist the city to ensure the security of the events.
Duterte-Carpio said Senator Francis Escudero and former senator Migz Zubiri already confirmed to watch the Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan, one of the awaited competitions.
She also clarified that media practitioners like photojournalists and television crews will not be charged with fees if they cover the events at the Rizal Park stage.
Duterte-Carpio said fees will be only be charged to photo-enthusiasts and hobbyists who will cover the events and require a clearer vantage point at the venue of the competition along San Pedro Street before the stage.
She said that photo-hobbyists nationwide will also conduct their annual convention in the city during the Kadayawan feast day on Friday and will compete among themselves for best pictures taken.
“They are aware that premium is charged for a vantage point since it is already a practice during festivities in cities of Cebu and Bacolod,” Duterte-Carpio said.
She stressed that the premium is designed to manage the number of photographers who want to take pictures of the events.
Finances duly accounted for
Duterte-Carpio also clarified that the Duaw Dabaw Foundation which handles the Kadayawan events will no longer undergo financial audit by the government since it is not using government funds.
She said the city government will not also collect the proceeds of the foundation from the Kadayawan festivities since it still has to run other festivities like the Pasko Fiesta, Araw ng Dabaw and Kadayawan next year.
Duterte-Carpio underscored that the management of the Kadayawan by the private sector becomes cost free for the government. However, Duterte-Carpio said she will still require the Duaw Dabaw Foundation to submit their financial statement relative to the expenses incurred during the Kadayawan celebration.
She also said that the financial statement becomes a public document once they submit it to the Securities and Exchange Commission. (with reports by Jose G. Dalumpines)

Written by: Ruivivar , Patmei Bello-
Tuesday, 30 March 2010
BEFORE choosing our leaders for the next three years in the May 2010 elections, it would be wise for every Dabawenyo to visit the Museo Dabawenyo for a lesson in history.
On its second anniversary (it formally opened to the public on March 14, 2008, during tjhe 71st Araw ng Dabaw celebration), Museo Dabawenyo unveiled an entirely new exhibition that brought to life the vision of the museum’s mother, Nanay Soling Roa-Duterte. After many years of lobbying, finding ways and means to doing the actual hard work, the team that is really the heart and soul of the museum rejoiced because, finally, we got Nanay Soling’s seal of approval. This is not to say that our work is done. Like Davao City, our people’s museum is still a work in progress.
The new exhibition includes a visually stunning Indigenous Peoples Gallery that highlights Davao’s ten major tribes. There is a life-sized diorama of the different indigenous peoples dancing, playing their native instruments, chanting — living in harmony amidst diversity. There is also an ethnographic map showing where each tribe is in the city and each corner that showcases every tribe’s history and aspirations as articulated by their respective tribal leaders.
From Davao’s indigenous past, we cross over to its recent history by walking through the Datu Bago-Oyanguren Strip. On that strip, we see Datu Bago’s bust face to face with that of Don Jose Oyanguren’s and the story of Davao from two different points of view. Was Datu Bago a pirate or true Davao hero? Was Oyanguren an oppressive colonizer or Davao’s founder? The debate rages on as historians continue with their research. There is also the Datu Bago Wall showing the remarkable Dabawenyos who received Davao City’s highest award and honor through the years.
In the Duhwow:Davao! Gallery, the centerpiece is the life-sized replica of President Manuel L. Quezon signing Davao City’s charter with the legislative proponent, Romualdo Quimpo (that is what we commemorate every Araw ng Dabaw). They are surrounded by different glimpses of Davao’s history from the Spanish period to the American then Japanese leading to the city’s charter. A gallery of all of Davao City’s mayors can be seen there, too, as well as the numerous awards and recognition the city has received through the years.
Going up the second floor, we will find a showcase dedicated to Davao’s Chinese heritage and the history of its Chinatown, which is the biggest in the world in terms of land area. There is also the Nanay Soling Duterte Hall which is dedicated to the history of the Undivided Davao. Nanay Soling is the last first lady because she’s married to the late Governor Vicente Duterte, the last governor of the undivided Davao Province. Another room on the second floor is The Peace Room that serves as library and audio-visual room of the museum. It commemorates the historic Philippine hosting of the Tour de Paix (International Peace Tour) by the Museo Dabawenyo in 2008 and showcases peace-building efforts of people around the world.
A gallery of contemporary changing exhibits can also be found on the second floor as a venue for local artists and artisans as well as local inventors to showcase their works. Businesses, schools, civic organizations, and other groups are welcome to have their exhibits there.
The Museo Dabawenyo is envisioned to be a true museum of the peoples of Davao. And I am extremely proud to have been given the privilege of becoming part of an excellent team of creative and hardworking people who built this museum for our city. Special thanks goes to Councilor Susabel Reta, who proposed the ordinance creating the museum; to Tita Baby Babao and the Davao Historical Society; to Dr. Helen Paguican and the Local School Board; to Mr. Ed Bangayan and the late Mr. Al Aboitiz for their generous support; and to the pioneering staff composed of the very creative and brilliant Richard Vilar, the talented Marianne Martinito, the very efficient Orly Escarilla, the very artistic Mark Tolentino, and the hardworking Roland Fortun. Great job, team! You are true Dabawenyos

question is, do some of those concerned even know these adherents of Culture and the Arts, hindi naman sila mga showbiz personalities ng nagkaka-jejemonize entertainment media ng bansa para makilala or bigyang pansin ng typical mainstream audience.
it seems such cultural endeavors are not that popular in the country because the works of "Alagad ng Sining" prod their audience to "think" that otherwise would have created a broadminded and less mediocre society that in turn make a more dynamic country, but instead it's entertainment media turning jejemonic where the audience isn't offered much effort to "think" that in turn produce instead a mediocre-minded society disinterested and timid with works that make them "think", except of course for that media to make easy profit from such mediocrity, and even media puppetry make use of such mediocrity to be manipulated during political elections in this country (with jejemonic slogan to boot) that like vicious cycle eventually disadvantages it :ohno:.

Fashion statement an indicator of emerging Phl market

MANILA, Philippines - Signature European and US clothing brands entering the Philippine market normally set their first step in cosmopolitan shopping malls like Rockwell, Greenbelt or Serendra.
But Italian label Ellesse is looking way south – toward Davao City on the island of Mindanao.
Ellesse is opening its first Philippine store next month in the 61,000-square-meter, Ayala-run Abreeza Mall, which opened in May. If any, the Davao opening may be an indicator of an economy that is no longer centered in Manila.
“You’ll be surprised. People in the provinces actually have the money, and they buy things sometimes from abroad,” says Cindie Cheng, brand manager for Ellesse in the Philippines. “So what we want to do is bring the brands to them.”
http://img838.imageshack.us/img838/5480/usual1hiresc.jpg
Ellesse’s fashion style is about giving a sporty but functional look to everyday wear, which is totally different from the highly competitive Adidas and Nike.
“It’s not about sweating or winning at all cost. It’s about performing and looking good,” says Mike Stopforth, managing director of London-based brand management company Pentland Group, which bought 90 percent of the label in 1994.
Ellesse founder Leonardo Servadio retained 10 percent ownership of the label. In case you don’t know how to pronounce the brand, the name Ellesse is derived from Servadio’s initials “L.S.” (pronounced “el-less”; the “e” at the end is silent).
Servadio founded the brand in 1959 in Perugia, starting with ski wear. He later expanded the line to tennis. Ellesse had endorsers such as tennis legends Chris Evert, Guillermo Vilas, Boris Becker and Anna Kournikova. It was during the 1980s that Ellesse gained popularity when it combined sportswear functionality with street wear.
“We’d like to define a category that is a mix of sports and lifestyle,” says Stopforth. “We want to see more people wear sportswear as casual wear. Many brands are getting into that category and we want to get there early enough and be renowned for it.”
Ellesse’s main target market is the 20-to-30 age bracket, people with a disposable income. “It’s for people who are sporty, and they can wear it everyday, anywhere,” says brand manager Cheng. “With Ellesse, we’re going with the functional yet fashionable.”
Although Ellesse’s niche market may be in the economic groups AB and upper C, its sporty look may have a wider appeal. It is looking at a potential large market. An estimated 61 percent of the Philippine population of 100 million is between the ages of 15 and 64, according to the CIA’s World Factbook. The median age of the entire population is 23 years old.
Ellesse plans to enter other Asian markets in the coming months. China is set for next year. The label is marketed by Manila-based Primer Group of Companies, a consortium mainly engaged in the retail and distribution of the world’s top consumer brands and products. It has offices in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.
“We see Asia as the next big challenge for us. There are a lot of emerging markets in Asia. Southeast Asia is obviously an important part of that, based out of the Philippines,” says Stopforth.
He notes that among Asian markets, the Philippines’ mixed Asian, European and American culture may add to Ellesse’s success – the same way the Philippines overtook India in the business outsourcing sector because of Filipinos’ American English.
“One of the reasons why we can succeed here is an appreciation for western brands and for the understanding of them as well. Every brand has to mean something. And if you visit other parts of Asia, the very premise that the product is Western is enough,” Stopforth elaborates.
“But here it’s a little more sophisticated. If you go around, there are a lot of shops here with a great mix of brands here that are obviously doing pretty well. The Filipino customer understands what those brands are. So, for us, it’s very different from the rest of Asia in that respect.”
If Ellesse can be used an economic indicator, the readings should be positive then. Investment bank Goldman Sachs lists the Philippines in its so-called “Next Eleven” or “N11” group of emerging economies, as having a high potential of becoming among the world’s largest economies in the 21st century.
Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services has assured that its recent downgrade of the United States’ investment rating from AAA to AA plus will have “no immediate impact” on the sovereign ratings of Asia-Pacific countries, the Philippines included. S&P’s upgraded the Philippines’ rating last year from BB- to BB, two levels below investment grade.
Ellesse will officially launch in October. Stores are planned at Ayala Town Center in Muntinlupa City in December and Bonifacio High Street in March. Rockwell and EDSA Shangri-la Mall are also in the works.
It is a known fact that a rise in one’s financial status comes a pricier taste in clothes. Stopforth doesn’t cite economic figures but definitely sees a lifestyle change. “The needs and tastes of the consumers in the Philippines are evolving, creating a demand for clothing and footwear that not only performs, but looks good as well.”

Samsung shows interest in LNG industry
August 15, 2011 12:00 AM
MANILA, Philippines - Samsung, one of Korea’s biggest conglomerates, has expressed interested in participating in the country’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry, according to the energy department.
Department of Energy director Jesus Tamang said Samsung has informed them of its interest in developing LNG power facilities and the construction of the Batangas-Manila natural gas pipeline project.
“Samsung indicated interest in the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of the LNG plants and gas pipeline,” Tamang said.
Samsung is one of the world’s renowned supplier of floating LNG vessels. Samsung’s Heavy Industries unit developed the LNG-FPSO (floating, production, storage and offloading vessel), the first ship of its kind in the world, an innovative ship that enables the production, liquefaction and storage of LNG.
In 2009, the Royal Dutch Shell Group selected Samsung Heavy Industries to be its exclusive supplier of LNG-FPSO for the next 15 years for a contract price of $50 billion.
Energy Undersecretary Jay Layug earlier said the department received numerous proposals from local and foreign firms to put up LNG infrastructure in the country, including the construction of LNG terminals, gas pipeline, or LNG-fired power plants.
Among the interested investors were: First Pacific Capital (Australia); ENN Energy Holdings (China); Synergy International (HK); SKE & C (Korea); Korean Western Power (Korea); BW Ventures; Hyundai Merchant Marine (Korea); Energy World (Australia); Philippine National Oil Co., GN Power Corp., First Gen Corp.; and Abacus Consolidated Resources/ENI-Saipem (Italian).
“We are completing our master plan for natural gas through technical assistance by JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) and World Bank by yearend. After we complete plan and results are favorable, then we conduct public bidding such infrastructures next year,” Layug added.
The World Bank and other multilateral financial institutions are looking at funding the construction of LNG facilities.
The energy department is also hoping that JICA, the agency conducting technical studies of the natural gas industry, will be able to complete its report by September.
The World Bank is conducting a separate technical study on the feasibility of natural gas projects in Mindanao.
The pipeline and LNG re-gas facilities could be offered under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement, but the power component must be held as a purely private sector undertaking in keeping with the provisions of the Electric Power Industry Reform Act (EPIRA).
For the project biddings targeted within the year, the preliminary costs quoted by the energy department had been $1.3 billion for the pipeline and $700 million to $800 million for the re-gas terminal.
The priority would be the auction for the Batangas-Manila gas pipeline, while the first LNG terminal being offered is the one in Batangas to serve the requirements of power facilities, which will retrofit as gas-fed generation units.
Mindanao, primarily Davao, is also eyed as site for the other LNG facility which has been gaining support from the World Bank.

better ride a taxi na lang. outskirts na kasi ang outland adventure, the nearest na pwede ka mahatid using jeepneys ay phoenix MAA station crossing. from there it's either lakarin mo or wait ka ng mga single na motor. para makatipid ka sa taxi, pwede ka mag NCCC Mall muna, ride any jeep with MATINA or MAA signs na dadaan sa san pedro, ponciano or uyanguren/magsaysay avenue. taxi fare from NCCC mall siguro mga 60 pesos.

Davao City open for investors who can recycle or convert solid wastes into energy
DAVAO CITY, Aug. 18 (PNA) -- The city government here is currently open for proposals from investors who can either recycle or convert solid wastes to energy, said Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.
The mayor said the current waste management program must not rely on the landfill alone.
Duterte-Carpio said the city can save more funds if the lifespan of the landfill at Barangay Carmen is lengthened before it reaches utmost capacity unless it spends anew in constructing another landfill.
“We need to put a technology between the collection of the garbage and the landfill, where we can either convert waste to energy or materials for recycling to lengthen the lifespan of the landfill, consequently, saving cost for the city,” she said.
The mayor said the city can offer some vacant lots of the sanitary landfill as place of operation for proponents amenable of putting their technology and infrastructure so that only the residual waste can be disposed.
She said one of the proponents wants to convert all the wastes into hollow blocks, another proponent aims to burn the garbage and get the dust to be used as fuel for a 10-megawatt power plant.
Duterte-Carpio said she already referred these proposals to the city committee on environment to authorize if a proposal is accepted.
She said one proponent has invited the city to Germany to show how their technology works.
“I already instructed Councilor Marissa Abella to go,” Duterte-Carpio said. (PNA)

'Pilipinas Natin' to be launched in Davao
Sunday, August 14, 2011
THE Aquino administration's volunteerism campaign dubbed "Pilipinas Natin" will be launched in Davao City on Tuesday to coincide with the city’s week-long celebration of the 26th Kadayawan Festival.
The government's campaign hopes to inculcate among the Davao youth the spirit of volunteerism and encourage them to participate in nation-building.
Have something to report? Tell us in text, photos or videos.

Kadayawan is a festival that every Dabawenyo holds close to his or her heart. Thus, when a change happens without prior knowledge from the lot of us, a little stir is expected to take place. Such is the case with the new Kadayawan logo and tagline. If you don’t already know, thereis now a new logo which is a lot less festive than the previous (in this columnist’s opinion), and they switched the tagline from “The Festival of Festivals” to “The King of Festivals”. Unfortunately, this piece of information was not disseminated earlier, thus several malls and hotels around the city still use the old tagline. Again, I do not agree with the switch (especially with the logo) but I am not one to complain. I am sure these changes were made based on some sort of study. More importantly, I think that the festival is more about the festivities, the culture, the experience, and the vibe, and less about the logo or tagline.
Now, here is the thing. A lot of locals complain saying that there aren’t many activities during Kadayawan. And although this is a legiotimate complaint, it is also one that is unfounded…or one that is based on pure opinion. Why? Because there are a lot of events. You just need to update yourself. And maybe this is one of the biggest challenges for the local government, or the handlers of the event. They must find away to promote all Kadayawan events, whether spearheaded by the government or by private sectors, to inform people about what they can do or which activities they may participate in during the “King of Festivals”.
But the fault is not only with them. The truth is, if you truly want to immerse yourself in the whole Kadayawan experience, you will look for events and things to do during Kadayawan. In fact, there is already a list of things you’ve missed last week including bazaars, concerts, tattoo competitions and exhibits, plant bazaars and exhibits, a fun run, cycling event, motocross event, among others. The good news is, I love you guys and wouldn’t want you to waste any more precious time just looking for events (instead of actually being there), so I gathered up all the hottest events to give you a shortlist of the things to hit during Kadayawan. You may use this lsit to immerse yourself in the festivities or as a itinerary if you plan to tour friends visiting from other cities to experience Kadayawan.
1. The Kadayawan sa Dabaw Opening is happening on August 15, 2011, 4PM, at People’s Park. Drop by for a refresher course about Kadayawan and discover how it came to be, what it’s all about, and what else to expect for this year’s festivities. Also expect cultural performances.
2. Hudyakaan sa Kadayawan is also happening from the 15th until the 22nd along the stretch of Roxas Avenue from starting 5PM. Hudyakaan sa Kadayawan is the Dabawenyo version of a street party. So if you want to dance in the streets while enjoying good music and imbibing the vibe of the ordinary Dabawenyo “masses”, this is the place to be. Plus, it is bound to be a lot of fun for tourists.
3. For the photography enthusiast, the Mindanow Photo Congress is happening from August 19 to 21 at the NCCC Mall Kadayawan Hall during mall hours.
4. If you are craving for a night of glitz, glamour, song, dance, and comedy, you might want to check out Follies de Mwah. This live show is based on Vegas style show-girl revues featuring some of the best performers from the capital city. This is happening on August 19, 8:30PM at the CAP Auditiorium.
5. For boozing with style while keeping well within budget, you could hit Marco Polo Davao’s Eagles Bar and avail of their bottomless cocktails from 6:00PM to 9:00PM for only 150 bucks. You could also enjoy the music of one of the best local DJ’s—Gary during Fridays and Saturdays.
6. For fashion finds, gastronomic treats, pasalubong items, little nothings, and a whole lot more, you may check out the Kadayawan Bazaar at the Davao Convention Center from August 18 to 21.
7. If the taste of old-school partying is what you lust for, hit Route88 on August 20 along Roxas Avenue for the “Best of the 90s” Dance Party. On the deck wil be DJ Ritchie Ritch and DJ Maxxey Perez from Club Vudu, Cebu (who happens to be a Davaoeno!)
8. If you are into clubbing and video-mixing, you may check out the Sonique Rush Party Series at Hybrid from August 15 to 21. The party starts at eight in the evening and will feature resident DJs from Starr as well as Video-DJ Chrismyk from Manila. Chrismyk has played in Republiq, Manor, and Hacianda.
9. For clubbing in high-style, you may also check out Starr’s Kadayawan Party which still remains top-secret as of press time. However, expect the party to be crazy, posh, and wild as most of Starr’s events are.

Dakpa ang akong tiil August 19th, 2011, 03:34 AM Davao City’s eyes solution to flooding
Philippine Information Agency (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=7&r=r11&id=49730)
DAVAO CITY Aug. 18 (PIA)-- With the city experiencing perennial flooding, the local government hopes to find modern ways to control the problem.
According to Engineer Andrew Lepardo operations head of the drainage maintenance section, they are currently making an inventory of the existing drainage system in the City.
Once collated, the data will be utilized through digital mapping where the drainage flow direction, existing outfall and drainage profile can be viewed in the map. Lepardo says the map can be done by using GPS or Global Positioning System and through profile surveying.
He admits that the current drainage lines are already 30 to 50 years old hence there is a need for a new comprehensive study that will come up with a new master plan for the city’s drainage.
One of the initial steps is the visit of a team from the Bureau of Designs- Department of Public Works and Highways central office to take a look at the initiative.
Another step taken to address the drainage problem is for new structures being built in Davao City to have drainage permits that the builders must secure before starting with the construction.
The drainage permit requirement is a drainage plan which includes a hydraulic computation that aims to measure the amount of water that the structure will divert to the drainage line.
In case they will determine that there is excessive water outflow, the Drainage Maintenance Section can recommend engineering interventions to minimize the load of water flowing to the existing drainage lines .
http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/tt139/nbrDVO/SMLAaerialperspective.jpg
He also hopes that more green buildings will be built in the city. He cited SM City Lanang (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1424298) which uses green materials where instead of regular cement these so-called green materials allows rainwater to be absorbed to the ground because of their porous characteristics.
“For every 10 drops of rain, eight drops are absorbed to ground compared to regular cement which just deflects water.” Lepardo says.
Another feature in the still being constructed SM Mall (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1424298) is the water holding tank which can keep the outflow of water for five to six hours rather than draining it immediately to the drainage lines. At least 50% of those collected in the holding tank are to be used in the comfort rooms and in the sky gardens. Also instead of gutters in the roof, the mall has sky gardens with plant boxes which absorb water rather than gutters that throw water out.
“Sadly dito lang sa Pilipinas hindi masyado known ang green buildings.” (Sadly here in the Philippines green buildings are not that well-known.) Lepardo lamented.
Aside from modern technology, Lepardo said that the key to having good drainage is to practice discipline particularly in throwing garbage properly. He said that about 60% of the materials extracted by drainage maintenance crews are considered as garbage and trash. (PIA/RG Alama)
Pangi-youtherns August 19th, 2011, 04:06 AM "Another feature in the still being constructed SM Mall is the water holding tank which can keep the outflow of water for five to six hours rather than draining it immediately to the drainage lines. At least 50% of those collected in the holding tank are to be used in the comfort rooms and in the sky gardens. Also instead of gutters in the roof, the mall has sky gardens with plant boxes which absorb water rather than gutters that throw water out." This should be adapted by land developers especially subdivision developers so as not to overwhelm our natural waterways (e.g. rivers, creeks and streams) as we know if we have developments/subdivisions water runoff after rains would at least be at 60 - 80% of the water from the rains of that developed area, and if our rivers capacity during its earlier stages of existence could only carry a volume from heavy down pours 30-40 % water because of the existence trees, vegetation and absorption of soil compared to paved roads, steel/plastic roofings and paved lots then our rivers would overflow resulting to flash floods such as the june 29 occurence in matina. It is high time to provide catchment areas for this newly developed land to mitigate future flooding.......pwde sab palitan na lang mga nakapuyo flood prone areas with rubber boat o life jacket aron makatipid:nuts:
