A TASTE OF DAVAO PUNCH
by Jojie Alcantara
From August 11 down to August 21, Davao City has a new treat for visitors as soon as they arrive in the airport.
Davao Punch, a special concoction of non-alcoholic drink with a combination of guava, calamansi and pomelo, which was created by a chef of Center for Culinary Studies Davao (CACS Davao), will be served at the airport for arriving guests.
This new fruit mix was created in line with the city’s campaign published in selected national dailies which highlights the bountiful harvest of fruits and flora during the month of August, hence its celebration of Kadayawan Festival. It also showcases ten of the most vibrant tribes in the city with a tagline of Ten Tribes, One Vibe.
In a full page ad, a young lass in colorful authentic tribal costume holds a drink in her hand with the caption: “FLY TO DAVAO AND WE WILL WELCOME YOU WITH A GOOD PUNCH. At the Davao International Airport, experience our welcome drink, DAVAO PUNCH, a concoction especially made for the guests of Davao City.”
Well, you will certainly get a punch in Davao during Kadayawan Festival!

Camella fast-tracks Mintal development project
CAMELLA is fast tracking development of its ambitious residential project in Mintal called Camella Cerritos by starting house construction in the fourth quarter of the year.
With all permits and licenses secured, Camella Cerritos' land development has been in full swing, completing 35 percent in just two months. This momentum is set to escalate towards the yearend as over 100 homes are ready for construction in this Mediterranean-inspired master plan community.
Have something to report? Tell us in text, photos or videos.
"We develop our projects very fast; our buyers do not have to wait for two to three years for the roads and facilities to be finished. With the entire budget for Camella Cerritos already earmarked, its massive development will take off within the year," Marlon B. Escalicas, Camella Davao general manager, said..
"Not only that, our buyers do not have to worry about validity of their ownership in Camella Cerritos because our titles are clean and do not have any encumbrances. In fact, we shall soon commence title segregation for our individual lots," he added.
As the land development in Camella Cerritos picks up its pace, the roads have been upgraded by using six inches of concrete and elevated up to one meter higher. Drainage system is carefully planned to rule out flooding and essential trees are preserved and will be augmented to keep the environment lush and make Camella Cerritos a green, healthy community.
Camella's vision for Cerritos as a self sustaining community will soon take shape, as the its commercial group is on the final stages of planning a commercial area with a mall as a centerpiece located right in front of the subdivision.
The commercial development will cater primarily to Camella Cerritos, complementing its superior facilities and amenities and making it a city within a city.
This development is seen to spur urban growth in Mintal and turn it into a self-contained area ideal for family and community living.
"Camella does not just build houses; we build communities. Homeowners will find everything they need for a quiet, enjoyable living in Cerritos, from the clubhouse, swimming pool, multi-purpose courts, to the shuttle service and 24/7 security system," Escalicas said.
Camella strengthens its leading position in the industry by gaining a substantial share in the real estate market, creating a presence in emerging areas, and building the Camella brand as a real benchmark for high quality homes at the best local prices in the most prime locations.
It prides itself in delivering on their commitments no matter the cost, as seen in its master planned developments, the Caribbean-themed Solariega and Italian-inspired Toscana, two of the most successful developments in Davao.
With 15 years of continued growth in Davao, Camella enjoys a reputable track record of accomplishment backed up by its solid financial capability.
Its presence in its developments beyond construction phase primes up the value of the properties, translating to bigger returns for their homeowners. These are qualities that Escalicas advises buyers to look for in a developer.
"Be a smart buyer and anchor your decision to buy a home on a developer that delivers on its commitments. Look at their existing projects to see if they built what they promised, and if these were executed well," Escalicas said.

DAVAO CITY, (PIA) -- Visitors to Davao will experience effortless pasalubong shopping, as the city will offer a one-stop-shop of Davao Region’s best quality products.
In time for the Kadayawan Festival, Davao guests and visitors could start buying authentic Davao products on August 20 at the Davao Ecocrafts Tindahang Pinoy, at the Aldevinco Shopping Center along Claro M. Recto Avenue.
The Department of Trade and Industry and the Department of Tourism will launch the pasalubong center tomorrow, which will showcase the best locally-made goods such as the products from the One Town One Product (OTOP) program.
DTI Davao City director Teolulu Pasawa said the center will carry products ranging from processed foods, gift items and stationeries, fashion accessories, furnishings and home decors, furniture and other items typically found in souvenir shops.
Pasawa told the media during the Club 888 Forum that Davao Ecocrafts, Inc. will operate the pasalubong center which is located at the Aldevinco Shopping Center.
The DTI and DOT partnership with Davao Ecocrafts is part of the Private Public Partnership program of the present administration, he stated.
The collaborative effort, he added, also involves an accreditation program of the DOT in terms of customer service and visual merchandising standards.
Pasawa also announced another PPP endeavor of DTI involving the Product Procurement Ordering System project, a marketing strategy for Davao products.'
He explained that the project would intend to put up “an ordering mechanism for Davao guests and visitors which shall be institutionalized with the hotel owners and tour operators.”
The project will be launched in the evening of August 20 at Marco Polo Hotel, where DTI and the hotel owners and operators will forge a formal partnership in a Memorandum of Agreement. (PIA-11/Carina L. Cayon)

ITALIAN sportswear brand Ellesse will open its first Philippine store in Davao this September, kicking off its plans of opening nine boutiques in the country.
“Asia is a big part of our long-term strategy, it’s a maturing market,” said Ellesse managing director Mike Stopforth. The brand has been well-received in Japan and Korea, however he noted that “it’s a slightly more mature market than China and parts of South East Asia but I think there’s lots of opportunities down here. If we get in at the right time, we definitely can forge a credible brand.”
Ellesse is a 50-year-old brand founded by Italian tailor Leonardo Servadio (the name is created from his initials -- L.S.). The brand started out with ski wear collections and later moved on to tennis clothes in the 1970s. Since then it has evolved but it still focuses on casual sportswear with a more “lifestyle” take on sports.
Mr. Stopforth explained that Italian style is more about the styling of the product. “It means it’s more fashionable, it’s not necessarily about the harsh performance sweaty sportswear. It’s much more stylized,” he noted.
He added that they also cater to consumers who are not involved in sports but prefers being casually dressed.
Shoe and sports clothing is a competitive industry, especially with giants like Adidas and Nike dominating the market -- Adidas reported earlier this month that its net profit rose 11% in the second quarter.
Despite tight competition, Mr. Stopforth pointed out that the Italian brand has its own niche market.
“We are a premium sports brand. We are accessible, however, we are premium…at the higher end of the market. We are not positioning ourselves at entry level.”
He also emphasized the brand’s age. “We are 50 years old, older than a lot of the [other] brands -- with age comes credibility.”
Aside from its sportswear being “stylish,” Mr. Stopforth also added that brand adapts locally. “With so much competition, we want to deliver innovative products, the reason why we tie up with local partners in the region.
“Unlike other’s business model where they have a central collection, we work with partners to react to the local market need a lot quicker and efficiently.”
The majority of its range released in the country will be designed locally following the brand’s “DNA” from a central perspective but designed for the local market.
“Climate and other factors are taken into consideration. Some are designed here or in Europe by a person working closely in the Philippines.”
The brand plans to open its second store in Alabang after opening its first shop at the Abreeza Mall in Davao. It plans to open nine stores in two years. Ellesse products are currently available in all ResToeRun shops and selected Bratpack stores. -- Camille Erika R. Sarte

DAVAO CITY—The construction of high-rise structures including malls and high-end housing subdivisions here has boosted the excitement level of the property-development sector in this city, an executive of an architectural and engineering design firm said.
Phany Castillo-Ho, marketing communication consultant of Far East Associates, said that construction took off anew after the 2008-09 global recession, with the construction of the P5-billion Ayala-owned Abreeza Mall as the biggest so far this year and with the second SM mall to be finished next year.
“These are exciting times and Davao City benefits the most because investors are looking for peace and order in a progressive economy and favorable weather conditions,” she told the BusinessMirror at their booth outside the Davao Investment Conference hall of the Marco Polo Hotel here on Friday.
Being constructed were the 10-story hotel and the 26-story condominium buildings of the Ayalas. To break ground soon was the 33-story mixed-use building of the Francisco-Tan-Cruz group, all within the Abreeza Mall area.
“And there are lots of subdivisions, many of them for the high-end market, that are being constructed,” she said.
The opportunities seen in Davao City appeared to have wrought a contagion effect after other big shopping-mall owners were poised to establish their presence in other areas in Mindanao, Ho said.
“Watch out for these ones. It’s really good for construction and real estate,” she said.
Only in July this year, Director Jesus Motoomull of the Construction Industry Authority of the Philippines (CIAP) said
Davao City is the “booming city in the country today,” with the total number of contractors here and the rest of the region reaching 400.
This number doubled that of Cebu, which had only 200. Of the 153 total applications filed at the offices of the Department of Trade and Industry, where the CIAP is based as an attached agency, Davao City processed 43 of these applications.
“Davao is definitely a high-growth region today, with a lot of projects for both government and the private sector,” Motoomull said.
Edrin Kaye C. Pedro, project manager at the Far East Associates, also told the BusinessMirror that the company has noticed an increase in the number of its clients compared “not only five or seven years ago, but as of even 2008.”
Pedro handed out a brochure of the projects that the company has handled so far, with its strength lying at its added service of already incorporating urban planning to the design of the building and other projects.
“We are the only one here offering green technology to the design and actual construction of our projects,” she said.
Ho said that while the owner may spend “a little bit more” to construct a “green” building, the savings that green technology would have over the years would easily cover their initial investment.

MANILA SUNSHINE By Jay Abalos (The Philippine Star) Updated August 21, 2011 12:00 AM
DAVAO — Noted as the Philippines’ fruit basket capital and Mindanao’s most visited city, Davao is ideal for travelers seeking a resort getaway, and looking to enjoy both local and international gourmet dishes.
I made my first impression of the city when I arrived at the Davao airport, which looks better than Manila airports with clean restrooms stocked with soap, tissue and paper towels.
Getting around the city by taxi is very convenient. Drivers are knowledgeable and polite and will give your change exactly, up to the last centavo.
I stayed at the Cabana View Deck of Marco Polo Davao with high-speed Internet connection. I also had privileged access to the Continental Lounge, where breakfast and afternoon snacks are served and private business meetings can be held.
Marco Polo Davao is known for its Lotus Court Chinese restaurant. Their Yin-Yang Garoupa (oversized lapu-lapu with two types of sauces), chocolate filled buchi, and salted-egg ice cream are some of the must-try dishes.
The newly reopened Café Marco serves lunch and dinner buffets featuring a sumptuous mix of Davao delicacies and continental cuisine.
During my three-day stay, these were the places I enjoyed and which showed Davao to be a sophisticated city:
Lazuli Spa
Located at the fourth floor of the Marco Polo’s Deck, this bi-level space has four relaxing spacious rooms and one couple’s suite. I chose to pamper myself with the De-Stress Your Tresses hair treatment, Organic Rice and Ginger Rub body scrub and Aromatherapy massage.
Bon Appétit La Boutique
This French boutique/restaurant, owned by Rosalie and Yves Monestier, has on its menu a majority of family recipes. Their apple tarte tatin topped with whipped cream is very similar to the ones I’ve tried in Paris. The walls are decorated with cute little baskets filled with French artisanal soaps, pillowed dried lavender, and traditionally jarred duck confit and foie gras — all imported from the South of France.
Plaza del Carmen, Loyola street, Barrio Obrero, Davao City

Swiss Deli And Restaurant
Ideal for wine and cheese lovers, with an old-style cellar that stocks a good collection of New and Old World wines. Locally made sausages, sandwiches, and pasta dishes are served at reasonable prices.
J.P. Laurel Avenue, Lanang, Davao City (across the street from the Damosa Building)
Tel. (082) 234-0271
Binggoy’s Gourmet
Probably my favorite place to eat in Davao. The restaurant was named after the husband of Baby Montemayor, who said, “Everything in the menu is Binggoy-approved.”
Her tuna assortments are one-of-a-kind as she uses traditional ingredients to create gourmet dishes.
My top three dishes are salted egg kinilaw (without vinegar); seared tuna with pomelo, green mango, ubod and guava salad; and grilled tuna panga with light curry sauce and mango.
Villa Margarita Hotel. J.P. Laurel Avenue, Bajada, Davao City
Tel. (082) 221-5674
Kusina Selera
A perfect place to dine if you’re looking for traditional Filipino comfort food. Their best-selling dishes are crispy tadyang and crispy pata. For regional specialties, they serve imbao soup (mangrove clams in ginger broth), sizzling bagaybay (tuna male egg wrapped in bacon), and the famous signature dessert buchitaw — a unique fusion of Chinese buchi and palitaw.
Legaspi Suites Compound 115 P. Pelayo Street, Davao City
Tel. (082) 221-2695
Malagos Farmhouse
Owned and managed by Olive Puentespina, the only artisanal cheese maker in the Philippines as far as we know. At present, she has developed 22 kinds of cheese ranging from different types of feta, rustico, chevre, goat cheese, and even kesong puti. Her cheeses are very much in-demand in deli stores and hotels in Manila.
Malagos’ artisanal cheeses and chocolate tableas are traditionally harvested and prepared at their farmhouse.
Bolcan Street, Agdao, Davao City
Tel. (082) 226-4446
Center For Asian Culinary Studies
Operated by Mindanao’s prime mover in tourism industry, Gene Bangayan and celebrity gourmet chef Gene Gonzalez, this Davao branch was established to highlight the city’s local ingredients and distinctive traditional cooking techniques.
The school offers full- and short-course programs in cooking, baking and pastry, wine, health nutrition, chocolate artistry, and food business management.

The Middle Finger Salute
Lourd de Veyra | Published: 2011-07-14 10:27:00
The origin of this hand gesture is said to go all the way back to Ancient Greece, according to a New York Times article, “Has the Finger Lost Its Taboo?”, even citing a reference in Aristophanes’ The Clouds. Another online source provides what sounds like an urban myth regarding its birth. In the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, the French had threatened to cut off the English’s middle fingers— the ones they use for pulling the string in their dreaded crossbow. But surprise, surprise: the French were defeated and as they retreated, the English proudly flashed their still-intact fingers. Another story has it that the phrase “flipping the bird”: it was said that they used pheasant feathers for their arrows.
The NYT article asks, “But when the finger does the talking, what are we communicating? (Don’t all shout the answer at once.) Disdain, frustration, rage? Yes to each, the professor said. Then there’s insult. Vulgarity. Puckish collegiality.”
The article adds, “And inherent defiance” and goes on to share a charming anecdote: “In 1968, North Korea seized the U.S.S. Pueblo and released a photograph of captive sailors, some of whom displayed middle fingers. The sailors told the North Koreans it was a Hawaiian good luck sign. When the North Koreans learned the truth, the Americans were beaten.”
And speaking of beatings, back to our favorite family of the moment. I can imagine them at the dinner table, the good mayor teaching the son and the daughter the finer points of governance, leadership, discipline, the importance of Draconian virtues, and self-expression via hand gestures.
Which brings us to the recent subject of dirty fingers. We all saw the Duterte Finger last week. That plus the spate of recent events drew swarms of criticism from human rights activists, or what Vice-Mayor and Daddy Rody Duterte called “kayong mga bleeding hearts diyan.” That finger— though pixelated on the primetime news— and the image of his daughter Sara socking the sheriff elicited such protests. But the Davaoeños seem to love the Dutertes. When howls exploded in the hyper-shrill biosphere of social media, the Dutertes’ first defenders were the denizens of Davao City themselves. “Hindi nga nananapak yung mayor niyo,” went the typical defense, “pero tingnan niyo naman yung siyudad niyo!” Davaoeños are mighty proud of their city— the peace and order, the impressively low crime rate, and the continuing economic boom. Davao was 19th on Asiaweek’s list of 40 Most Liveable Cities in 1998. Maybe they should put a big fat middle finger on the official city seal. As if to say to the visitor, “F—k all your smiling and polite local government officials. Come and we’ll show you how to run a city.” Death squads? Fight fire with fire— along with the one-finger salute and some choice cuss words no less.
Frankly, I prefer that to hypocritical mayors who beam at you from their massively Photoshopped tarpaulins while you stand on a filthy street corner festering with uncollected garbage. Then you survey the rest of your surroundings— the noise, the smoke, clogged drainage, the stray dogs, the cracked pavement, the atmosphere of dread where you feel like someone’s about to snatch your bag or stab you anytime, and you ask yourself, “What the hell am I paying taxes for?” Now that's one real, big, fat dirty finger pointed right at your very nose.

eflex August 24th, 2011, 04:00 AM Kadayawan prizes awe Zamboanga mayor
A TOWN mayor from the province of Zamboanga Sibugay, who visited Davao City for this year's Kadayawan sa Dabaw, was awed by the grandiose prizes the city had given away to winners of various competitions that highlighted the festival.
Siay town Mayor Julius Acosta Jr., who was with his Vice Mayor Carlito Bayawa and some local officials of Zamboanga Sibugay, had watched Sunday's Pamulak Floral Float Parade, the grand finale of this year's Kadayawan sa Dabaw, with amazement.
Have something to report? Tell us in text, photos or videos.
"Wala ko nag-tuo na ani diay ka gwapo ang Kadayawan, nanimbawut gani akong balahibu sa pagka balo nako na half-million ang grand prize sa parade pa lang (I did not expect that Kadayawan is this grandiose and festive and I had even goosebumps when I learned that the grand prize for the parade alone was half a million pesos)," Acosta told Davao reporters shortly after the parade.
Acosta said he can't help but compare the King of Festivals to other festivals that he had witnessed.
"Sa amua gani, ang P20,000 grand prize lang na, tapos diri, consolation prize lang na (Back in our place, that P20,000 is already the grand prize but here, it's only a consolation prize)," he said.
The mayor said he already tasked his staff to observe to be able to learn some techniques on how the city managed the event effectively.
He said he will echo what he and his team had observed during the Kadayawan Festival. (Jereco O. Paloma)

Then you survey the rest of your surroundings— the noise, the smoke, clogged drainage, the stray dogs, the cracked pavement, the atmosphere of dread where you feel like someone’s about to snatch your bag or stab you anytime, and you ask yourself, “What the hell am I paying taxes for?” Now that's one real, big, fat dirty finger pointed right at your very nose.

may maling info din. Marilog is not part of Calinan disctrict. Its a district itself along with Toril, Tugbok, Baguio and Calinan.
I've been to this Epol Falls as well when we were doing community service as part of our CWS program way back college. Sobrang lamig... going down was just okay.. pero paakyat medyo challenging.. :) Maganda ang Marilog!
skyion August 25th, 2011, 12:03 PM The recent Kadayawan was quiet memorable, I wonder if some here also noticed a certain phenomenon I observed (my friend also noticed it) that occured sometime around noontime at the Rizal Park stage during the Indak-Indak presentation:
may isang contngent ng indak-indak na gumamit ng huni ng ibon sa musika nito, nagsimulang gampanan ng contingent ang dances nila at kasabay ng beatings ng iba't ibang ethnic instruments, tinugtog kasabay nito mula sa malakas na audio system ang napakagandang pakinggang huni ng ibon...

Philippine Eagle Centre in Philippines
Address of Philippine Eagle Centre in Philippines: Malagos, Calinan, Davao, Mindanao, Philippines
About Philippine Eagle Centre in Philippines
Philippine Eagle Centre in Philippines is involved in breeding programs to ensure this species' survival. The Philippine Eagle Foundation is a private, non-stock, non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation and protection of the endangered Philippine Eagle. It has been able to undertake direct actions that benefit the species, other wildlife and the people who share its rainforest habitat with the eagle.
History holds that in 1965, Dr. Dioscoro Rabor, a noted Filipino scientist alerted the world of the bird’s endangered status. In 1969, the Monkey-Eating Eagle Conservation Program was established. In 1987, the project started operating as a private institution. The dedication and effort invested into this work eventually paid off. In 1992, the Foundation successfully produced the first two Philippine Eagles hatched and bred in captivity. The birth of Pag-asa (Hope) and Pagkakaisa (Unity) caught the world’s attention and eventually led to the subsequent outpouring of public support and sympathy that helped revitalize the effort to save the species

Hi guys! I am an SSC forumer from Manila. I just noticed that there is no thread about this facility that is commited to the conservation of our endangered national bird - the Philippine Eagle (also known as monkey-eating eagle). This bird of prey is dubbed as the largest eagle in the world and so I think that this is one conservation facility worth discussing about. Please post any comments, news or pictures that you have about the Philippine Eagle Center. Thanks fellow forumers...

i grew up near the philippine eagle facility before (calinan while phil eagle is in malagos)...well not that near, to give u an idea its like ortigas cbd dito sa may rob galleria (lets say yan place namin) and phil eagle is buendia flyover :). the center is open to the public with a minimum fee - aside from sponsorship kc, that's where they get funds to take care of this facility.

the camera angle may be low as not to capture a bit above it where the birds glided kasi di naman sila lilipad malapit sa nakaharang na confetti. initially I thought it was part of their props na may pinakawalang mga ibon kasi karamihan kalapati, until I noticed swallows also joining in.

Davao's tallest building to rise soon
By Henrylito D. Tacio
Sun.Star Davao (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/lifestyle/2011/08/25/davaos-tallest-building-rise-soon-175348)
Thursday, August 25, 2011
SOON, the tallest building in Davao City, if not in Mindanao, will soon rise. It will be located about five kilometers away from the airport, some four kilometers from Ecoland Bus Terminal, and three kilometers from the city hall.
Aeon Towers, as the building is called, will be built in Bajada, beside the Abreeza Mall. The construction will start at first quarter of 2012, and projected time of turnover will be on first quarter of 2016.
Aeon Towers, a luxurious condominium (about 600 units) and a 5-star hotel in one roof, is the next skyscraper to watch.
"It is a high-rise 34-storey building that will consist of commercial areas, hotel and 22 floors of residential condominium units," Ian Y. Cruz said.
Cruz is the president and chief executive officer of FTC Group of Companies. FTC is named after his father, Francisco Tan Cruz. It is an affiliate of the AGL Sons Incorporated, which is known to be one of the leading operators of real estate commercial building development.
Once it is built, Aeon Towers will be one of Davao City's landmarks. In fact, it may rival those buildings in Singapore and Hong Kong in its architectural design and beauty.
"The Aeon Towers is a structure that will embody the spirit of residents of Davao, towering over the Davao City landscape," Cruz explained.
Think of Empire State Building in New York City or the Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. To make it more distinct and unique, the building will look like a monolith that stands as if offering the endless possibilities that life in the fast evolving city has to offer.
"It is a perfect balance between boldness and tradition, between a carefree lifestyle and a progressive mindset," Cruz pointed out.
The term aeon is actually an English word, which alternately means "life" or "being" and "forever" or "eternity." Cruz explained: "The concept of endlessness can be associated with the boundless possibilities of life in the city, and consequently, in the residence which Aeon will offer."
According to Cruz, Aeon Towers will "improve people's perception of high end condominium urban living."
He added: "(It) will provide a peek of what the twenty-first century condominium living in Davao City will look like. There is a promise of a unique experience as first class (state of the art) amenities/features merge together with the natural environment and breathtaking views Davao has plenty to offer."
Cruz said his group of companies is set to make Aeon Towers a fine example of green construction which, to quote the words of one writer, "champions energy efficiency and environmental sustainability in the setting, design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation and even demolition of structures where human beings live, work and play."
One of the critical issues in Mindanao today is impending energy crisis. Currently, Mindanao consumes 1,500 megawatts (MW). By 2014, the island will have an energy deficit of 420 MW.
To use electricity efficiently and save energy costs, the exterior of the Aeon Towers will be made of special cut glasses.
"These will provide natural lighting during the days thereby less energy consumption," Cruz said.
Another issue that most Filipinos complain about is water. In Metro Manila, for instance, residents often complain of lack of water during the summer months. In some parts of the metropolis, the water supply situation reaches a vulnerable state that the little amount water some residents get is not enough even for emergency purposes like cooking and drinking.
In search for a solution of possible water problem, Aeon Towers will be harvesting rain water, but not for cooking or drinking.
"We will use the rain water for cleaning and watering of landscapes found at the common areas," Cruz said.
But that's not all. There are several other features that make the building more environment-friendly: ultraviolet protective tint for sun rays, sound proof glasses, and open space in the middle for natural ventilation (no "inner units"). Aeon Towers is also equipped with a lightning transistor.
Currently, there are seven real-estate condominium developers in Davao but Aeon Towers epitomizes a different strategy.
"We will offer what would embody the future's high standard quality in condominium living in Davao City, comparable with the world's best," Cruz assured.
For one, Aeon Towers will be one of the first buildings in the country that will offer the Smart Home Technology (SHT). With such innovation, the building will have a network and cable design that can convert a regular home to a fully automated home fit to the taste of the condominium unit owner.
Among those that will be installed: wireless automated lighting, air-conditioning, and whole home audio control.
"All the above features are possible with the use of this system," Cruz explained.
SHT requires absolutely zero power, thereby saving energy. "Besides being environment-friendly, the technology also serves as a realization of a need for automated products that make life easier, safer and more enjoyable," Cruz said.
Most importantly, Aeon Towers will have top-of-the safety features that include an advanced fire protection, alarm and sprinkler systems, reliable back-up power supply, and high-speed passenger elevators.
To lucky would-be residents, Cruz offers this assurance: "Amidst the advance technology features of the condominium, the essence of home is never forgotten in every corner of the designs. It must still remain a home that is 'close to the heart' - so there is also the promise of fond memories and unforgettable experiences if people choose to stay in Aeon Towers."
Aeon Towers is a high-end project complete with prime amenities and a majestic view of Davao Gulf and Mt. Apo, the country's highest peak. Below the tower are four-storey commercial buildings. On top of the tower is a swimming pool, where residents can take a dip while viewing the whole of Davao City and the beautiful Davao Gulf.
On why Aeon Towers will be built in Davao City, Cruz replied: "Davao City is one of the cleanest cities in the country. There is less pollution. If you want to go to the beach, in a matter of ten to fifteen minutes you will be there already."
"Almost everything," Cruz added, "is very convenient. The people are friendlier than those you meet in other cities."

SUBJECT: Davao: A Mindanao Success Story
...And Mindanao's Service Capital and Economic Hub
--------------------------------------------- -----
¶3. (U) Davao City has evolved into Mindanao's unofficial capital
and economic hub. The service sector, mostly trade, tourism,
education, and financial services, accounts for about 40% of Davao's
economy. One of the country's premier convention centers and one of
Mindanao's top tourism destinations, Davao City accounted for nearly
35% of Mindanao's 150,400 total foreign visitor arrivals in 2007
(mostly from the U.S., Japan, Korea, China, and Australia). The
city's nearly 50 colleges and universities currently graduate a
labor pool of 15,000 English-speaking students annually.
Lowest Poverty Rate in Mindanao
-------------------------------
¶8. (SBU) Although a Mindanao success story, Davao City's relative
economic prosperity also illustrates that inequitable wealth
distribution and development is as much a challenge within Mindanao
as it is across the Philippines (Ref B). Davao City often is
geographically lumped with Davao del Sur for the purpose of
generating provincial-level economic statistics. In large part
because of Davao City, the province of Davao del Sur has the lowest
incidence of poverty (27.4%) among all of Mindanao's provinces.
Davao-based officials of the Philippine government economic planning
agency unofficially estimate Davao City's poverty rate at between
20%-22% of its population, well below Mindanao (46.7%) and national
(32.9%) averages. With Davao City as its major economic and
business hub, the Davao Region has the second highest per-capita
gross domestic output among Mindanao's administrative regions (the
equivalent of $1,258 in 2006, according to the latest Philippine
government statistics) and the fourth highest among the country's
seventeen administrative regions.

have made it among the country's top business and investment sites.
Davao City attracted over 4 billion pesos ($90 million) in projects
registered by the Philippine Board of Investments during 2007. The
Davao International Airport -- one of the Philippines' busiest --
provides direct air linkages to Palau, Singapore, Hong Kong, and
Manado, Indonesia, as well as domestic routes. It is Mindanao's
premier international airport. The Davao seaport is the busiest in
Mindanao and among the top five ports nationwide. Export earnings
from merchandise shipped from the Davao Port reached about $720

Just a few minutes after talking to Stranger #23 (The Martial Artist), I spotted another subject who I thought could have been a member of the Backstreet Boys holding a digicam. I thought he was one of the foreign tourists just spending a week or two in the locality but upon closer look he was alone wearing an official Ateneo de Davao PE uniform, feeling very secured by himself. I approached him and asked for a picture. He readily agreed without reservations.
I found out he is Jonathan Allen Watson, a 20-year old AB Psychology student of one of the most elite universities in the city and comes from Belton, South Carolina. He is here not as an exchange student but as a college student by choice to study and spent college life in Davao City after extensive research and self-pondering. When I told him about the project, he revealed that he is a writer/blogger maintaining the sites:
* www. davaocityliving.com
* http://www.youtube.com/user/DavaoCityLiving
Targeted for expats and his co-age levels, he blogs about his life and interests and how he currently lives in the city. With a pen name of JAWZ, his site offers many information and happenings in the locality and its life and culture in the point of view of an American.
After exchanging names and Facebook accounts, I told him if he might want to join our camera club the Maniniyot Community so he could hone his photography and post awesome pictures in his blog site. He is currently in a relationship with a Filipina girlfriend who is also a blogger like him.
Nice meeting you Jonathan.

* www. davaocityliving.com
* http://www.youtube.com/user/DavaoCityLiving
Nice meeting you Jonathan.

kurama August 27th, 2011, 01:04 AM Davao chamber mulls branding committee to develop tourism-related businesses
DAVAO CITY, Aug. 26 (PNA) - The Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCCII) is moving toward putting the seal of the Davao Brand to tourism-related establishments.
Leny V. Castillo, Davao Branding director of DCCCII, said they are considering the tourism sector as another area that they would work on, considering that Davao City is home to many tourism businesses.
She admitted however that the work is so huge and tough as tourism encompasses many lines of business operations.
"This would really take time and this might run to about six months or a year to come up with the mechanism," she said.
She said tourism related businesses vary from hotels, restaurants, to agri and eco-tourism sites, beach resorts and many more.
She said this activity is of private and public partnership and for this particular program they need to collaborate with those in the tourism sector, the Department of Tourism (DOT) and other tourism related agencies.
Davao Branding Program which started in September 2005 seeks to upgrade the current level of appreciation for excellence and quality of locally manufactured products through a local branding system. To date, it has already accredited 18 small and medium enterprises (SMEs), mostly on agri-processing and production.
Castillo said the Davao Branding aims to create a strong identity and market presence for the quality of locally manufactured products in the local as well as international market.
She said it also encourages producers of locally manufactured products to aspire for better quality and class.
Meanwhile, the National Association of Independent Travel (NAITAS), Inc. is confident on Tagum City's branding of its ecotourism sites, particularly the Tagum City River Cruise in Davao del Norte as seen in their commitment and dedication of developing tourism in the area.
A team from NAITAS of 28 members headed by its president Rosemarie Sandoval Galang together with Tagum City Mayor Rey Uy and other local officials conducted a familiarization tour in the area.
Seeing the development, Galang said they are willing to promote the site even as Mayor Uy asked their group to assist them in their product promotion not only locally but internationally.
NAITAS is the biggest and largest association in the Philippines with over a thousand members and 17 chapters spread all over the country. It produces 65 percent of outbound air tickets and 70 percent domestic air tickets.
The river cruise is a two-and-a-half tour which offers distinctive features such as the sight of century-old mangroves among others. In the wetlands and along the banks of waterways that stretches more than 14 kilometers were planted for the past five years of 82,500 seedlings.
The cruise jumps off from Punong Restaurant with stopovers in Maningo Farm which features the famous soft-shelled crabs, the Ka'ganVillage displays of Muslim trades and delicacies, the boardwalk observatory, a floating tiangge which sells packed goodies.
The project is collaboration between the city government of Tagum, the City of Tagum Tourism Council, the Barangay Local Governments and Councils of Women. (PNA)

Royal Breadhaus Inc., The largest and most advanced industrial bakery in the Mindanao region as of the moment is comming out with a line of bakery retail stores. From Industrial sales, we will now be catering directly to consumers and not just big franchise food establishments in the Mindanao region.
We are now making our presence known to the masses and we are proudly Davao made.
SM Ecoland, Lanang, SM hypermarts on the month every month from January to March... new big international food franchises... new company retail stores in development.

¶14. (SBU) Davao has made a remarkable turnaround in the past 20
years from the "murder capital of the Philippines" to a peaceful and
secure pro-business environment that is internationally recognized
as one of the most livable cities in Asia. Although the methods which seem to have been used in Davao to obtain peace are not ones
we would want to see replicated, Davao serves as an example of the
progress which can be made if peace can be established and good
economic policies put in place.

d7beast August 27th, 2011, 06:35 PM i find these retail and property investments as small time and very short, though a catalyst for investors to take a second look, davao will have to see big time BPO locators and establish export/science/techno parks, but until now there are no investors in these industry, the clients are still the locals and the surrounding provinces where it consider davao as an oasis of growth in mindanao. but overall, the economic impact is still very low. northmin may not be as big or progressive but their economy is export-based particularly in manufacturing and they have an operational export processing zone, the very thing that davao region will rethink of possibly jumpstarting,..look, malls and condos can be had in every places but establishing an export and manufacturing -oriented industry is quite a red x for davao region,..

How Ayala Land is upping the ante

In Davao City, the Bajada district has been synonymous with commerce and the concrete jungle. Last summer, Abreeza Mall transformed the drab gray landscape into a tableau of green spaces and varicolored outlets, enhancing business in the process.
Meanwhile, Davaoeños savored their coffee and meals by the lush garden and fountain area and queued at such Manila-based brands as Terra Nova and Bread Talk.
Situated on a property owned by Antonio Floirendo’s Anflo Group, Abreeza has become the new epicenter, as it is located across the Redemptorist Church and a five-minute walk from Victoria Plaza, the city’s oldest mall.
Some 30,000 people visit and shop at Abreeza every day. Abreeza offers many firsts in the city such as Parfois, Promod, Fully Booked, Payless, Nine West, Debenhams, Marks & Spencer, Italianni’s and Friday’s.
The 320-store mix also fuses local innovations such as Hukad and Moon Café from Cebu; Bigby’s from Cagayan de Oro; Grab-a-Crab from General Santos City; Tsuru, Hanoi and Ranchero from the city. Tourists get their souvenirs from T’nalak owned by Maricris Floirendo-Brias.
The developer Ayala Land Inc. sees the potential not only of adding stores but also building a businessman’s hotel called Kukun Hotel Abreeza, the 26-story Abreeza Residences and BPO (business process outsourcing) and office spaces linked to the mall.
Fueled by past successes, Ayala is bullish about replicating this live-work-and-play concept in other parts of the country. Building epicenters or central business districts is nothing new to Ayala, given its development projects in Makati, Alabang and Cebu. What’s new are the growth opportunities in other provinces once considered laid-back: Baguio, Cagayan de Oro, Iloilo, Bacolod, Subic and Palawan.
Too, ALI is dusting off its elitist image and marketing with the launch of Amaia Scapes, affordable residential villages in Laguna, Bacolod, Cabanatuan and Nueva Ecija, catering to the growing middle class.
On top of that, ALI is expanding its hotel and resort operations, some of which will be part of the mixed-use developments.
Live, work, play
“I go back to the vision of Ayala Land: How do we contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of the people? How do we contribute to the economic development of the country and come forward with a real good way by which we could have an integrated development?” says Antonino Aquino, ALI president.
“It comes with a lot of effort in securing a large-scale development. Put a great master plan. Acquire the elements to make it the center of gravity in every location we’re in—office, residence, hotel, retail and green spaces.”
In the pipeline are:
Baguio-Ayala Land Technohub. Located in Camp John Hay, it is designed for BPO offices and retail clusters that are partly inspired by the architecture of the old American homes there. It provides the convenience of a neighborhood shopping center and hangout.
Centrio, Cagayan de Oro. Also a joint venture between ALI and Anflo Group, it will be a regional shopping center that carries a host of mainstream and local brands and dining concepts, coupled with a boutique hotel and Avida Centrio, a self-contained residential community.
Iloilo-Ayalaland TechnoHub. In Mandurriao, Iloilo City, on the rise are two BPO buildings, a technopod (an office space for IT and BPO’s with 24/7 facilities) infused with dining and nightlife.
Ayala North Point Community Center. This cosmopolitan hub will rise next year close to the tony North Point Village, offering the best in local and imported retail concepts and a park.
Harbor Point. As another regional center that will rise in Subic Bay Freeport Zone, it will be heavy in office and retail in a soothing environment, replete with specialty stores and active and wellness-oriented stores.
These developments are not seen as mere malls but as cities or town centers. People want to gravitate there because it’s a classy but hip urban environment. Prospective buyers might find the developments attractive because these offer more protected versions of city living.
“We have to provide a total environment for the BPOs. They are our customers. Once agents like a particular place, the BPO will be successful. That’s why we put up affordable residential units and retail so they can live, work and play. In BPOs, good hotels are required by visiting principals aside from homes for the managers and agents. We are focusing on CBD developments and ensure that there are required amenities. Some people will live off-CBD. We have to make some provisions,” explains Aquino.
That’s when Amaia Scapes comes into the picture. These subdivisions will provide homes of good-quality materials and finishes.
ALI will launch Amaia in Pampanga, Cavite and Batangas.
“The Amaia brand is about economic housing or house-and-lot packages ranging from a P600,000 duplex to a P1.2 million two-story house with carport. It’s aspirational and not cramped,” says Aquino.
Strategy
Despite the rise of new hubs, ALI takes great care to improve its developments.
“We continue to be present even beyond the initial development and keep putting in place all the best practices we’ve done,” says Aquino.
For instance, by 2012, Alabang Town Center will have another building that will add 70 stores and Metro Gaisano. In the next three years, Bonifacio High Street will see the rise of a food strip, the Mind Museum, luxury shopping destination, Kukun hotel, Avida residential towers, more parks and a football field.
Aquino attributes the aggressive developments to the flourishing economy which covers the sunrise industries of BPOs and tourism. With the demand for stylish yet affordable hotels for business travelers, ALI is building Kukun hotel, designed by architect Conrad Onglao, in Bonifacio Global City, Davao and Cagayan de Oro, and will soon launch in Nuvali and Alabang.
On how ALI positions itself vis-a-vis other developers that have more malls and are also bullish about hotel and real estate, Aquino explains, “Our strategy is not too much as to what the competition is doing but what we see as the major drivers of the economy. We would like to position on those major drivers and we will put in places where it is needed.”
ALI recently partnered with El Nido Resorts in Palawan. “To complete as new product initiatives, we bought into the hotel chain. We’re expanding our El Nido chain by putting up Pangalusian and Apulit,” says Aquino.
Ultimately, development is not about adding square meters of salable space. “You have to look for that added dimension. What are the elements that can help in improving our lack as a people and in economic development? Construction is one of the best things that can happen in giving jobs. It helps people who don’t have sophisticated skills. It addresses unemployment. Aside from quality of life, we try to make sure our customers and people who frequent our developments can experience what we do to contribute to the growth of the country.”

CEBU CITY – Nineteen years ago, Jay Aldeguer set up a T-shirt business, Islands Souvenirs, with an initial capital of P200,000, and his venture has gone a long way since then.
Today, Aldeguer has invested into another tourism-related venture, Islands Stay Hotels (ISH), a value-chic hotel chain that would tap the market for no-frills accommodation. He has poured in about P35 million.
“It’s a similar concept to low-cost airlines finding that meals on the plane are one of the more practical things to do away with, in turn, passing the savings to the customer,” says Aldeguer, chief executive officer of the Islands Group.
The hotel project is in the group’s five-year plan to boost the country’s tourism industry.
Aldeguer sees a demand for ISH as accommodations in Cebu are either the luxury and business hotels, or the lower-end inns and pension houses.
It has two branches – one just across from the Cebu Business Park on Archbishop Reyes and the second along Marina Mall near the Mactan Cebu International Airport.
The Archbishop Reyes branch has 15 rooms while the Mactan branch has 20, but Aldeguer plans to increase the number to 50 and 60, respectively. The target is actually 300 rooms in the next two years.
For Cebu alone, Aldeguer says ISH target 10 locations in the next 10 years.
Lower
Although priced lower than most hotels and resorts, the rooms in the centrally located ISH outlets offer quality beds and linens, rain showers, flat screen TV sets and free wireless broadband access.
Aldeguer may be on the right track. During their dry runs, the two hotels registered an 85 percent average occupancy rate and a walk-in rate of 50 percent, which, he says, was well beyond industry standards.
Islands Stay Hotels rooms are categorized as small, medium, large and extra large.
For its uptown Cebu branch the rates are P950 for small; P1,450 for medium; P1,950 for large and P2,150 for extra large.
For its Mactan branch, the room rates are P850 (starting September) for small, a promo rate of P950 for large for one person and additional P500 and P300 for each succeeding extra person and P1,650 for large.
Filling the gaps
JAY ALDEGUER, president and CEO Islands Stay Hotels (3rd from right) and his staff of Islands Stay Hotels Cebu City. CDN PHOTO/TONEE DESPOJO
The small and medium rooms are good for one person only. Large and extra large rooms are good for two people only. Extra persons will be charged P300 upon check-in.
Islands Souvenir now has 90 outlets, including stand-alone stores, department stores and those run by distributors, spread all over the Philippines.
While it has become a success, Aldeguer has found himself deeper in the tourism industry, noting gaps, especially in tourism services, that should be addressed. He considers the gaps as business opportunities and must be filled so the Philippines can become a premier destination in the Asia-Pacific region.
Islands & More
In 2006, Aldeguer established Islands & More, a retail business catering to tourists and with shops located in hotels and airport terminals. The concept revolves around a one-stop, travel essentials store offering products minus the high mark-ups common in hotels and resorts.
Islands & More now has 12 stores and three franchise areas – Baguio City, City of Vigan in Ilocos Sur, and Camarines Sur.
Islands Banca Cruises
Two years later, he invested in Islands Banca Cruises (IBC), which addresses the question of what else to do in Cebu aside from going to the beach or on historical tours. His initial capital was at P3 million, while his total investment has reached P5 million.
Just like Islands Souvenirs, IBC helped set the standards for boats offering island hopping tours. Other boats had been confronted with safety issues as these were not being regulated by the government.
During peak season, IBC and its fleet of 12 bancas could not accommodate all their clients, so the company decided to enter into arrangements with other boat owners.
“We fix their boats, have our own crew man these. During the peak season, we outsource eight to 10 boats,” Aldeguer says. The boat owners get a share of the revenues.
IBC has become successful that other businesses offering similar services have emerged. Aldeguer now wants IBC to be replicated in other areas, such as Boracay and Bohol. “We are looking for strategic partners,” he says.
Market needs
Just recently, IBC signed a franchise agreement in Davao with Sea-T Leisure Group of Kirby Te, Aldeguer reveals.
Apart from island-hopping, the company will be offering another product – a romantic cruise at the Cebu-Mactan channel.
The unstoppable Aldeguer has yet set his sights on another tourism-related business, Talima Adventure and Waterpark, on Olango Island in Lapu-Lapu City.
“I wanted to develop a new destination in Cebu,” he says. He places his investment in Talima at P8 million to P10 million.
The place features a giant inflatable slide, water trampolines and water rollers. A greater part of the P100 entrance fee per visitor is donated to the Talima Marine Sanctuary.
Talima had projected a turnout of 150 people on a weekend, but on the next, it drew 500. Bad weather, though, had forced the cancellation of trips to Olango.
For those interested in going into a tourism-related business, Aldeguer shares this advice: “Now is the good time to go into business because we are at the crossroads, where there are so many new demands and needs in travel. Whoever recognizes that will be in good company.”

MtApoStandard August 28th, 2011, 09:44 AM A Closer Look at Davao in the Philippines
By Joseph. Filed in Vacation Guides |
Our international friends who enjoy traveling from one city to another may want to consider dropping by in the city of Davao in the Philippines and splurge on the city’s beauty without much cost.Davao city, a place situated in the Mindanao region of the Philippines, is considered one of the country’s top tourist destinations and was chosen as one of the most competitive cities in the Philippines. Most visitors who come here describe Davao as a land of exotic beauty and rich culture. It is probably the least exposed of the country’s urban areas, and the most appealing. As a friend would describe it, Davao is a great holiday hideaway, with its lush greenery and exotic wild flora and fauna that contribute to its picturesque view.
Davao is a melting pot of 1.2 million people, both indigenous and migrants now being acculturated into the mainstream of society, creating a unique cosmopolitan culture. The solemn rituals of the tribes, their rhythmic dance steps and chanting music, and the rich customs and traditions of migrants make up the Davao culture of today.
The place is known for Mount Apo, the controversial durian and the exotic “waling-waling.” Mount Apo is the country’s highest peak with around 10,311 feet tall and Southeast Asia’s second highest that it takes about four days to climb it. Durian fruit is controversial because of its “unpleasant” odor. It might smell like hell and tastes like heaven as some people would describe it. The exotic waling-waling (Vanda Sanderiana) used to abound in the tropical forest of Mount Apo and its surrounding areas. Unfortunately, it has become almost extinct in the wildlife. Davao also has a number of beaches to offer. Perhaps the most regal beach resort among them is the Pearl Farm which is nestled in a secluded cove on Samal Island 45minutes by motor launch off the coast of Davao. The beach does not allow one to leave unsatisfied as most may say.
Davao comes alive with the celebration of “Kadayawan sa Dabaw” every third week of August, coinciding with the harvest time for fruits, flowers and agricultural products.

Thanini August 28th, 2011, 12:20 PM A Closer Look at Davao in the Philippines
The beach does not allow one to leave unsatisfied as most may say.

abskess August 28th, 2011, 09:59 PM Swiss Deli: Taste of world-class cuisine
Sunstar-Davao
By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan
Monday, August 29, 2011
MARKUS Kehl and Romano Venuti. Two experts. One a butcher, the other a baker. Both formed a perfect combination that has made The Swiss Deli and Restaurant, located at RS Compound on Km. 7 in Lanang, a byword not just in Davao City but in all parts of the country.
Markus and Romano were good friends way back in Switzerland.
Markus is a distinguished culinary expert who obtained his apprenticeship and professional training as butcher in their birth country.
He has mastered the art of butchery, making a name for his world-class delicatessen items like sausages, cold cuts, terrines, air-dried specialties, smoked fish and other meat specialties. He also had stints in finest five-star hotels around the globe. At the Manila Peninsula, he established the butchery team that produced the best meat delicacies.
Romano, for his part, has satisfied every sweet tooth's craving in reputable hotels the likes of The Westin Philippine Plaza, The Hyatt chain of hotels, Manila Midtown Hotel, Century Park Sheraton Hotel and Al Jubail Hotel International, among others.
He is not only an excellent baker with a keen taste for details and artistic presentations but he is also a versatile culinary expert of various international cuisines.
Markus and Romano's partnership has gone a long way indeed, as their restaurant will mark its sixth year in the business on September 8, 2005.
"Davao, six years ago, had nothing like The Swiss Deli before. So out of our backgrounds, we put up this place. I make the bread while Markus make the sausages. We produced our own sausages and meets. This place was then small enough for a small bakery and a deli corner. The restaurant can only accommodate as much customers. We are happy to have expanded over the years," Romano said in an interview.
He reminisced some walk-in customers in the past would go look for other place to dine in since their place was always full.
They now have a very spacious dining area and a new private function room that can cater to a maximum of 35 persons for any occasion including corporate meetings, birthday, weddings, debuts, Christening, baptisms and other get-together parties.
Romano said the resto was built to showcase their sausages and processed meats that's already being supplied to various restaurants, supermarkets and hotels in the Visayas and Mindanao regions.
Their regular patrons are from the classes A, B and C as well as the young professionals and businessmen.
The resto also offers hams, bacons, cheeses, sauces, fresh salad greens and veggies, US Angus steaks, Australian tenderloin steaks, lamb meats, ostrich steaks, turkey with special roasting arrangements and a wide array of imported and local deli goods like pastas, coffee beans, marmalades, chocolates, biscuits, juices, pickles and more.
It's interesting to note that they use Australian beef and pork that are locally bred for their processed meats. Yet, the distinct Swiss Deli taste is anything but local.
Romano smiled, "Butchering is Markus' expertise. He has his own methods. He uses the right machines to produce meats for our processed products."
Fresh baked breads and pastries are also available daily. Cakes and desserts are ready for takeout as well. The resto offers weekly specials and new menu every two weeks to keep in step with competition.
Romano said they add items to their menu based on what they want to eat themselves.
The deli also has a variety of liquors, spirits and German beers. A newcomer at the resto would be amazed at the collection of imported wines from Australia, France, South Africa, Chile, Italy, Switzerland, Spain and USA. Never leave the resto without seeing the wine cellar. It will make your dining experience even more memorable.
All these delectable deli goods will also be available at the southern part of the city asthe Matina Swiss Deli will soon rise along Mc Arthur Highway near Davao City Water District.
Romano said, "We will open our Matina branch before the year ends. It's a long way to go for those people from the south like those residing in Bangkal, Toril or Mintal to come to Lanang and buy our bread or deli items. They can just visit or drop by at the Matina branch and buy the goods they need."
The two men behind the success of The Swiss Deli and Restaurant aim to deliver high standard of goods and services at a reasonable price. Quality and value for money is what they want their patrons to enjoy.
As for those who plan to start a new business, Romano advises, "Experience it on your own. Whatever your background is, capitalize on that. You can't open a restaurant if your background is not related to it at all. Make a plan. Do it. Make it grow."
Have a taste of world-class cuisine at the resto that is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. for booking and reservation, contact (082) 235-0271.
abskess August 28th, 2011, 10:06 PM Housing construction at Wood Lane to start in January
Sunstar-Davao
By Nelson C. Bagaforo
CONSTRUCTION of houses at Wood Lane, Alson Properties newest posh development project in Davao City, is set to start in January 2012.
"By early 2012, Wood Lane will be ready for homebuilding activities," Luis Condrado de Jesus, Alson's assistant general manager for operations, assured homebuyers in Friday's blessing and inauguration of the village's entrance gate and guardhouse. It was also the first day of the Open House for Wood Lane Residences.
Have something to report? Tell us in text, photos or videos.
However, Jolla Soriaga, business development unit manager, told Sun.Star Davao in an interview that housing construction will start in January.
She said the 71 lots within the two-hectare property are already sold out and what they are still selling at present are the six townhouses, called "Wood Lane Residences" which will be built near the entrance gate.
Soriaga said construction of the model unit for the townhouses has started and targeted to be completed before the year ends.
According to de Jesus, Wood Lane's total physical accomplishment is now at 81 percent, combining horizontal and vertical accomplishments.
"Some 91 percent of our horizontals have been completed. Earthworks are done, drainage is in place. The water distribution system has been laid while roads have been concreted. The perimeter fence is also in its final stage of completion," he said.
Electrical poles will be installed in the two weeks, he added.
"We are halfway through in terms of vertical structures... By the middle of December, we should be able to witness the completion of the cabana together with the swimming pool," de Jesus said.
He also announced that a commercial establishment will be set up in a 2,000-square meter lot fronting the fence.
"This establishment is envisioned to serve the needs of Wood Lane residents, as well as neighboring communities," de Jesus said.
Wood Lane, located on Diversion Road in Maa, Davao City, beside Woodridge Park, another development project of Alson, was launched in 2009 in a bid to provide another residential project "where families can live comfortably."
"As hoped for, many Dabawenyos wanted a piece of Wood Lane that 90 percent of the lots was sold out on the first day of selling," de Jesus said.
He said that despite the economic slowdown that hit world's big economies during that time, Alsons has remained confident on the potential of the Davao market.
"We have remained true to our commitment to you," de Jesus told homebuyers, adding that amid trying times, the project went on without delay.
"Despite the rains, the project went on. Today we are here to celebrate and be thankful for milestones achieved towards the development of this community," he said. "We get one step closer to that day when we can drive through this gate and on these roads and bask in the pleasure and security of living in a beautiful and clean environment."
Welcoming guests in Friday's event, Eric del Costa, Alson's assistant general manager for marketing and business development unit, told homebuyers that they are now "closer to the completion of the development of Wood Lane."
"Looking around us today, it is not difficult to imagine a close-knit and secure community where residents and neighbors know each other. Where the clubhouse is an extension of their homes and where their children grow up as lifelong friends," he said.

Swiss Deli: Taste of world-class cuisine

Milcah August 29th, 2011, 03:35 PM Davao City looks beautiful in the day. Sooo beautiful..
This is the reason why Damosa is most favorite streets in Davao City. Next is Ecoland, then Sta. Ana Ave and Claveria (I hope Claveria gets a facelift, it got soo much potential. Also, change the name back to Claveria).

Well, I guess the size of the city is really getting to be a toll for the water supply. I often have to either wake up very early or take a shower very late because between 6:00 to 9:00 AM, the water pressure is very low in the Poblacion area...
Also, I do miss Davao water sometimes esp. after having a beer...hehe.. I want a VERY COLD shower!

What she said on the last part "Bakit sa panahon na pwede pang gawaan ng paraan, bakit di ninyo ginawa?" really hit home.
Now i'm having second thoughts also on the proposed coal plant which from the latest report will actually use freshwater and not saltwater as we originally thought.
Pag uwi ko, papalagay na rin ako ng rainwater catchment, sayang din yung tubig ulan na natatapon lang eh halos araw-araw pa naman umuulan sa atin.

eflex August 30th, 2011, 02:46 AM Housing construction at Wood Lane to start in January
Where the clubhouse is an extension of their homes and where their children grow up as lifelong friends," he said.

hopes the concerned local agencies will have foresight to maintain those banana and other agri fields now getting cornered in growing urban areas especially those prone to flooding, just like Japanese urban planning practically applied in their cities, it will be a valuable asset in preventing flooding in the downtown area and may even be utilized as added tourist attraction.
They will just compensate by building vertically instead with midrise or highrise structures rather than sprawl into a concrete jungle that will make it vulnerable to more flooding especially with the critical envronmental concerns of the Planet.

What she said on the last part "Bakit sa panahon na pwede pang gawaan ng paraan, bakit di ninyo ginawa?" really hit home.
Now i'm having second thoughts also on the proposed coal plant which from the latest report will actually use freshwater and not saltwater as we originally thought.
for me, kung ingon man man diay mahitabo, dati neutral rako re: CFPP, karon against na kaayo ko ana..sad to say nga pila ka Cubic meter a day of fresh water ilang gamiton..murag lisod kaayo.. not unless ug excess nga tubig sa sapa ilang gamiton..oh my lord..:ohno::ohno::ohno::ohno:
sad to think nga ingon ani jud ang effect sa mga progressive cities..:ohno::ohno:

eflex August 31st, 2011, 03:15 AM 97 fun runs in 34 weeks
TO CALL it a craze just doesn't describe what it is that has moved Dabawenyos to hit the pavement such that no Sunday has gone without a fun run or marathon since the year started.
From January to August 26, which has a total of 34 weekends, the City Government has already issued a total of 97 special mayor's permit for fun runs and marathons.
Have something to report? Tell us in text, photos or videos.
Erwin Alparaque, Assistant City Administrator and acting chief of the City Hall Human Resource Management Office (HRMO), said the significant increase in permit issuance for fun runs can either be attributed to the intensified awareness of Dabawenyos toward healthy living or that it has become an effective means of generating funds.
In 2010, only 30 special permits were issued for fun runs in the entire year. Alparaque shrugged off the city's earnings from such since a special mayor's permit only costs P150 each.
"Bisan ang mga empleyado gani namo diri sa City Hall ginaawhag namo na mag apil-apil ug mga fun run (We even encourage our employees here at the City Hall to join fun runs)," Alparaque said.
For this year, the month of May recorded the most number with a total of eight.
Sundays are the most preferred days, but because there are only certain routes ideal for a marathon or fun run, and having more than one a day can result to smaller number of participants, others make do with the rest of the days in the week.
"Mag lumbaanay man gani ang mga organizers na makakuha ug slot sa Sunday kay mas daghan siguro sila ug makuha na mga participants pag Sunday (Organizers are trying to beat each other in booking for a Sunday run, maybe because they can get more participants if it's held on that day)," said Lynett Galido of the special permit section of the Business Bureau of the City Hall.
Galido added that those forced to schedule a run right before another are forced to make do with routes that have a lot of turns and curves, which she said, requires more marshals and is not ideal for organizers.
The list did not include information on whether the run was a fund-raising activity or a real sports event. But it showed that both private and government organizations topped the list of organizers.

Dorothy Perkins opens
AT THE newly-opened Dorothy Perkins shop at Abreeza Mall, Dabawenyos have lots to dish. The store was cool: bright motif, spacious, organized, and attractive pieces on the glass windows.
Morning of August 20, we watched as employees hoisted signages and products inside the Dorothy Perkins shop. Another preparation for the day's opening of a new boutique at Abreeza, a favorite shopping destination in the city since the mall opened on May 12, 2011.

According to Teresa S. David, Dorothy Perkins or DP is a favorite brand in the United Kingdom, exclusively franchised in the Philippines by Robinsons Specialty Stores, Inc.
With a total of eight branches in Metro Manila (Ermita, Rockwell Power Plant, Robinsons Galleria, Eastwood, SM Mall of Asia, Trinoma, Glorietta and Podium), Dorothy Perkins opened its first regional store in Davao City.
This longtime business, established more than 90 years years ago, is trying to increase exposure outside Metro Manila.
"There's market for the fashionable products of Dorothy Perkins in Davao City. It may be a UK brand but shoppers will get value for their money," David said.
Dorothy Perkins, she said, is one of the biggest fashion brands today with nearly 600 stores and more than 50 international outlets.
Offering fashion for all with clothing in sizes 6 to 20 (petite to plus), Dorothy Perkins has a wide range of collections including bags, causal jerseys, formal tops, shoes, casual bottoms, formal wears, jumpsuits, soft bottoms and accessories shipped directly from UK.
David believes Davao is pretty ready for an imported brand like Dorothy Perkins. Though the brand does not have a celebrity endorser, the likes of Kris Aquino, Jinky Pacquiao and Kim Chiu are regular customers in Dorothy Perkins stores in Manila. They are seen wearing DP apparel in public appearances.
Sharon Ugot, Group Brand manager, said they are optimistic the DP brand will be doing good in Davao. "The shop may look intimidating but in reality DP is an affordable imported brand. You'll find items for as low as P300."
DP is about fashion that makes sense providing affordable, feminine fashion and a shopping experience that customers clearly love. Its bold colors are in simple silhouettes, and casual separates with a touch of oriental-inspired prints and bright florals.
On its opening day, DP offered 20 percent off on the latest trends and the most stylish outfits fashionistas always wanted.
First day shoppers delighted themselves with free frozen treats and took snapshots with your friends at the photo booth with every purchase.
The August 20 event was not just a ribbon cutting ceremony at the DP shop located on the ground floor of Abreeza Mall, it was a celebration for everyone.
