Tiger Airways to start flying out of Davao in Nov.

TIGER AIRWAYS Singapore Pte Ltd. will start flying out of Davao in November on top of existing flights from this Melbourne terminal. Rival budget carrier Cebu Air, Inc. said, however, it doesn’t have plans to offer international direct flights out of the province. -- REUTERS
The airline said it will be offering direct flights from the Mindanao province to Singapore three times a week: on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays.
This is on top of the budget carrier’s existing flight from Manila and Cebu.
“Tiger [Airways Singapore] will fly to the business and tourism hub of southern Philippines three times a week… The first flight to Davao takes off on Nov. 1,” the carrier said.
“We are excited to add Davao to our growing portfolio of exciting destinations,” Stewart Adams, managing director of Tiger Airways Singapore, said in the statement.
“As Singapore’s leading low-cost carrier, Tiger Airways is committed to providing customers the lowest airfares on safe and convenient point-to-point air travel, offering travelers low fares, more savings and more choices,” Mr. Adams added in the statement.
The route is currently served by Singapore Airlines’ SilkAir, through a thrice weekly direct flights and twice weekly flights via Cebu.
Tiger Airways Singapore’s fleet will comprise of 20 Airbus A320 by March 2012 from only 14 in March this year.
The airline said in a previous statement that the additional capacity will allow it to introduce new services, including the flights to Davao.
Such an increase in fleet size will also allow the carrier to increase frequencies for existing routes, Tiger Airways had said.
Local carrier South East Asian Airlines (Seair) sealed a deal with Tiger Airways last year for the lease of two Airbus aircraft and an online marketing arrangement.
Seair operates flights between Clark, Pampanga to Hong Kong, Clark to Macau and Clark to Singapore.
Seair last month has filed a petition to operate flights between Clark and points in Malaysia, a matter which has not yet been resolved by the Civil Aeronautics Board.
In a related development, Cebu Air, Inc. said it was not planning to offer international flights out of Davao in the near future even as rival carriers were doing so.
“We have no plans of any [international direct flights from Davao] as of now,” said Michelle Eve A. de Guzman, Cebu Pacific’s corporate communication specialist.
The Gokongwei-led budget carrier, however, will increase its Davao to Manila flights to seven times daily from the current six effective Oct. 1.
This will be further increased to eight times daily starting Oct. 7.
The airline will also boost its Davao-Cebu service through additional four flights weekly starting Oct. 14. There are currently five flights daily from here to Cebu.
Data provided by the carrier showed the airline flew the most number of passengers to and from Davao in the second quarter, gaining 44.4% of the local market.
It flew 318,694 passengers during that period.
Ms. de Guzman said that Cebu Pacific operated with an 85% load factor in the second quarter, which she attributed to their discounts and promotions.
The Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation said that Cebu Pacific offers the most number of seats to, from and within the Philippines, based on the figures on seats per week from Aug. 22 to 28, 2011.
From April to June this year, Cebu Pacific claims to have carried over 3.1 million passengers after surpassing the one million monthly passenger mark for April and May.
“We are on track with our annual target of 12 million passengers (this year),” Ms. de Guzman said.
Ma. Lourdes A. Monteverde, president of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc., said two other airlines, AirAsia and Lion Air, are also coming over particularly after President Aquino’s pronouncement to include Davao City as a secondary gateway under an open skies policy regime.

eflex September 2nd, 2011, 03:39 AM ALI establishes socialized housing unit
By JAMES A. LOYOLA
August 31, 2011, 11:41pm
MANILA, Philippines — Giant property firm Ayala Land Inc. (ALI) has put up a new subsidiary as it is venturing into the socialized housing segment to complete the full spectrum of its real estate products.
In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, ALI chief finance officer Jaime Ysmael said the firm is creating a fifth residential brand that will engage in socialized housing developments.
“The projects under this new brand will be pursued via South Maya Ventures Corporation (SMVC), a separate organization from the company’s other existing subsidiaries,” he said.
ALI units include Ayala Land Premier for the luxury market, Alveo Land Corporation for the upper middle market, Avida Land Corporation for the middle income market, and Amaia Land Corporation for the affordable housing market.
Ysmael said SMVC will offer mainly house and lot packages with prices not to exceed P400,000 per unit and is planning to launch its first project in Gen. Trias, Cavite within the last quarter of the year on a 10-hectare lot currently owned by ALI.
Meanwhile, ALI also declared a regular cash dividend of P0.0733 per share for the second semester ending December 31, 2011 on its outstanding common shares as of record date September 20, 2011, payable on October 5, 2011.
Ysmael said earlier that they will be breaking into the socialized housing segment using the Buena Vida brand which will test the market by initially developing 2,000 units and then take it nationwide if it takes off.
ALI senior vice president for the residential business group Bobby Dy said that, with socialized housing, ALI will be doubling its target market.
Dy explained that this is part of their expansion strategy by offering their products to more geographic centers in the country and offering them at lower price points.
He noted that the socialized segment of the market is hugely under-served and has a big backlog due to strong demand from first time home buyers compared to the higher segments of the market where the buyers already have two or three houses.

lakawero September 2nd, 2011, 10:29 AM Davao pilots organic farm under agriculture ordinance
DAVAO CITY -- The city government is piloting a 10-hectare farm under its Organic Agriculture Ordinance in the village of Sibulan, Toril district, about 15 kilometers south of downtown. Should it prove successful, the farm will be replicated in other areas of the city.
For now, the harvested organic vegetables are being marketed to nearby Sta. Cruz in Davao del Sur.
"That’s why we are building a tramline to bring the vegetables directly to Davao City. We only need to finish the cable so the tramline can be operable," said City Agriculturist Leonardo R. Avila III.
The city council in February last year approved the Organic Agriculture Ordinance to promote natural farming in attaining food sufficiency and healthy lifestyle in the city.
Ultimately, the ordinance aims for "mainstream organic agriculture as a main farming practice in Davao City."
Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio signed the implementing rules and regulations of organic agriculture law three months ago in June.
Mr. Avila said the next step for the ordinance is to ink an agreement with shopping malls and wet markets in the city to set up organic centers where the products can be sold.
By setting up more organic farms, the city can ensure food sustainability and probably engage in export as the city is trying to take advantage of the certification accorded by a third-party certifying body, Ecocert, on 100 hectares in Sibulan, Mr. Avila said.
The city government is currently preparing a 10-year agri-aquaculture sustainability plan that would be anchored on chemical-free products.
City council members said they would earmark P10 million to give the ordinance a headstart by institutionalizing organic agriculture zones that will be protected from contamination of chemical-based farm inputs through the setting up of buffer zones.
"These zones shall be organized according to ecological districts and will be based on existing categories of land tenure instruments and arrangements such as ancestral domain, the protected area, [and] agrarian reform," Mr. Avila said.
The organic agriculture farms will be set up in areas where there are actual farmers practicing natural farming method and where man-made or natural water formations are present as identified by the city’s land use plan.
Meanwhile, the city government is offering more than 10,000 hectares in upland areas for organic farming after plotting the available lands on the meeting with two potential investors who wanted to venture into organic banana and organic cacao.
"We estimate the investment on organic banana alone in the city could reach $25 million," he said. -- Joel B. Escovilla

To haters of Mayor Sara Duterte, hope the demolition of Old Balara, Quezon City will set an example for what happens if the mayor does not intervene.
Read my lips: Herbert can't pull a Sara Duterte. I repeat, Herbert can't pull a Sara Duterte.
Lesson for the day: Look what mayor has done to a city or a town you are living before making a sweeping statemet at the mayor of the other city or other town.

DAVAO — Noted as the Philippines’ fruit basket capital and Mindanao’s most visited city, Davao is ideal for travelers seeking a resort getaway, and looking to enjoy both local and international gourmet dishes.
I made my first impression of the city when I arrived at the Davao airport, which looks better than Manila airports with clean restrooms stocked with soap, tissue and paper towels.
Getting around the city by taxi is very convenient. Drivers are knowledgeable and polite and will give your change exactly, up to the last centavo.
I stayed at the Cabana View Deck of Marco Polo Davao with high-speed Internet connection. I also had privileged access to the Continental Lounge, where breakfast and afternoon snacks are served and private business meetings can be held.
Marco Polo Davao is known for its Lotus Court Chinese restaurant. Their Yin-Yang Garoupa (oversized lapu-lapu with two types of sauces), chocolate filled buchi, and salted-egg ice cream are some of the must-try dishes.
The newly reopened Café Marco serves lunch and dinner buffets featuring a sumptuous mix of Davao delicacies and continental cuisine.
During my three-day stay, these were the places I enjoyed and which showed Davao to be a sophisticated city:
Lazuli Spa
http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/641/radar3c.jpgLazuli Spa at Marco Polo offers a variety of body pampering such as massage, body scrub, facial and hair treatments.
Located at the fourth floor of the Marco Polo’s Deck, this bi-level space has four relaxing spacious rooms and one couple’s suite. I chose to pamper myself with the De-Stress Your Tresses hair treatment, Organic Rice and Ginger Rub body scrub and Aromatherapy massage.

Bon Appétit La Boutique
http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/1117/radar3b400.jpgSample works of students from Patternmaking class at Fashion Institute of Design and Arts.
This French boutique/restaurant, owned by Rosalie and Yves Monestier, has on its menu a majority of family recipes. Their apple tarte tatin topped with whipped cream is very similar to the ones I’ve tried in Paris. The walls are decorated with cute little baskets filled with French artisanal soaps, pillowed dried lavender, and traditionally jarred duck confit and foie gras — all imported from the South of France.
Plaza del Carmen, Loyola street, Barrio Obrero, Davao City

Swiss Deli And Restaurant
Ideal for wine and cheese lovers, with an old-style cellar that stocks a good collection of New and Old World wines. Locally made sausages, sandwiches, and pasta dishes are served at reasonable prices.
J.P. Laurel Avenue, Lanang, Davao City (across the street from the Damosa Building)

Binggoy’s Gourmet
Probably my favorite place to eat in Davao. The restaurant was named after the husband of Baby Montemayor, who said, “Everything in the menu is Binggoy-approved.”
Her tuna assortments are one-of-a-kind as she uses traditional ingredients to create gourmet dishes.
My top three dishes are salted egg kinilaw (without vinegar); seared tuna with pomelo, green mango, ubod and guava salad; and grilled tuna panga with light curry sauce and mango.
Villa Margarita Hotel. J.P. Laurel Avenue, Bajada, Davao City
Tel. (082) 221-5674

Kusina Selera
A perfect place to dine if you’re looking for traditional Filipino comfort food. Their best-selling dishes are crispy tadyang and crispy pata. For regional specialties, they serve imbao soup (mangrove clams in ginger broth), sizzling bagaybay (tuna male egg wrapped in bacon), and the famous signature dessert buchitaw — a unique fusion of Chinese buchi and palitaw.
Legaspi Suites Compound 115 P. Pelayo Street, Davao City

Malagos Farmhouse
http://img805.imageshack.us/img805/440/radar3d450.jpgMalagos’ artisanal cheeses and chocolate tableas are traditionally harvested and prepared at their farmhouse.
Owned and managed by Olive Puentespina, the only artisanal cheese maker in the Philippines as far as we know. At present, she has developed 22 kinds of cheese ranging from different types of feta, rustico, chevre, goat cheese, and even kesong puti. Her cheeses are very much in-demand in deli stores and hotels in Manila.

Center For Asian Culinary Studies
Operated by Mindanao’s prime mover in tourism industry, Gene Bangayan and celebrity gourmet chef Gene Gonzalez, this Davao branch was established to highlight the city’s local ingredients and distinctive traditional cooking techniques.
The school offers full- and short-course programs in cooking, baking and pastry, wine, health nutrition, chocolate artistry, and food business management.

Now i'm having second thoughts also on the proposed coal plant which from the latest report will actually use freshwater and not saltwater as we originally thought.
Pag uwi ko, papalagay na rin ako ng rainwater catchment, sayang din yung tubig ulan na natatapon lang eh halos araw-araw pa naman umuulan sa atin.
Miush better if the whole Davao Region and areas surrounding Davao Gulf make concerted efforts to outrightly ban any coal plant construction and more preferable that it fully support Renewable energy investments as technologies that cater to it will be getting inexpensive through the years.
unlike in coal where mainstream media easily manipulated by their influence and other concerned agencies that should be doing its responsibility in researching its implications did not report alarming scenarios as the coming PEAK COAL crisis where depleting supply and world demand on coal is expected to rise as much as 600x its present cost (obviously profiteering is a major factor but at the expense of mindanaon consumers), and the fact that even other rich countries refused t continued further research on "clean coal" technology due to its highly porihibitive cost as well as they myth of producing "clean" coal, woth its devastating residues still present somewhere.
Neither is the Planet compromising on added burdens to its already battered ecology as it manifested in erratic climate changes that had wreaked havoc in many parts of the world and virtually affected its inhabitants, obviously Mindanaoans included.
Local LGU's and agencies of the region may as will make concerted efforts in making Davao Region and the whole Davao Gulf area a truly coal plant-free, ECOLOGICAL REGION that uses RENEWABLE ENERGY in all its energy requirements and be supportive of RE investments and implement the landmark RE Law that will give added honor and pride to the region and its people and at the same time continue to nurture the priceless wealth of Davao Gulf and Davao regions' rich biodiversity and will serve as model for the rest of the country and even in the Asian region to follow for the responsibility nurturing of the already threatened Environment and lessen its alarming ecological threats.

whether you like it or not, coal is still the source of energy of the future. coal will still be the partner of economic progreess.
environment protection agency(epa) for example had approved early this year, a new coal fired plant to rise in eastern victoria.
just to let you know, the gillard government, amid her carbon tax scheme, had proposed $5 billion dollars over the next 5 years in assistance to affectectd coal power generators. on condition they invest on clean energy technology and to develop their clean energy investment plans.
to keep industrial generators under checks, there will be a imposed $23/tonne of above limits emissions against heavy polluters, to begin next year. this is part of the governments carbon pollution reduction scheme

give the proponents their side to explain. media did not give the information whats the reason underneath the anti coal undertones in their reports. they want people to decide based on ther side of the story. its not helping people to be educated in a way what they desrve to know and learn

DAVAO CITY -- I was astounded when I saw the traffic system in this city of durian during my recent visit here to cover for a story in Davao del Sur. We stayed for several nights in Davao City and I immediately noticed the “high-technology” traffic system.
Actually, there was nothing special in the traffic lights as they look the same as those in Metro Manila and other rural areas. But what is amazing is the system they are implementing and how they effectively introduced the “high-technology” to the locals here.
All the traffic lights here were equipped with sensors which can easily monitor areas that are congested with vehicles. The traffic light automatically prioritizes the areas where traffic jams are monitored. The red and the green traffic lights were operating based on the volume of the vehicles.
To add to that, the officials here in the Davao also applied the “non-contact” apprehension because of their “state-of-the-art” Public Safety Command Center that can monitor almost all major thoroughfares in the city. Wireless cameras were placed throughout the city and they can monitor the movement in the area “real time.” The officials here refused to give the exact number and area where the cameras were installed for security purposes, but they said, “Davao is well-covered.” Those caught violating the traffic law will be recorded and they will be fined the next time they renew their license or vehicle’s registration.
Apart from solving the traffic mess in the city, the command center is also very helpful in crime prevention, disaster, fire, flooding and other calamities, as it can monitor activities in all the major places.
Would you believe that this traffic system in Davao was patterned after Los Angeles, California? The Davao government invested a lot in this project but it’s worth it.
Insiders informed me that then Davao Mayor Rody Duterte (now vice mayor), was in Los Angeles when he encountered the noticeably effective traffic system in the United States. Duterte immediately conducted his research and later found out that a Filipino-owned company based in the area was behind the said traffic system.
Abratique and Associates Inc., owned by Efren Abratique was then introduced to Duterte and what happened next is history. In less than a year of implementation, the traffic signalization in Davao was awarded the “Engineering Excellence Award” in the prestigious Consulting Engineers and Land Surveyors of California.
Indeed, Abratique and Associates Inc., is truly world class, because they are the only project manager for the traffic signal, highway safety lighting, and traffic signal communications for the 22 mile Los Angeles to Long Beach Light Rail System.
They also have completed more than 500 intersection designs in city, county, and state governmental jurisdiction in California. The company also designed lighting for various on-site parking lots, highway safety lighting at traffic signalized intersections, and new lighting system for street improvements on arterial highways and in subdivisions also in California.
What is more impressive is when I found out that Mr. Efren Abratique is my kababayan in Lian, Batangas (I was raised and grew up in this small but beautiful town). I also learned that because of his achievement, Mr. Abratique who is also the uncle of my two childhood friends -- Michael Masipag and William Pedraza -- was also awarded as one of the most outstanding alumni of Lian Institute (where I also graduated high school) during the school’s 50th anniversary. He is also the recipient of the Most Outstanding Alumni in his Alma Mater University of the East.
Given a chance, I personally believe that Abratique’s company will help resolve the worsening traffic woes in the metropolis, not only because he is my kababayan, but because of his achievement worldwide. Truly world class!

Duterte vows to block Aboitiz Power plan to tap Davao City ground water
By Germelina Lacorte
The Philippine Daily Inquirer (http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/52979/duterte-vows-to-block-aboitiz-power-plan-to-tap-davao-city-ground-water)
3:58 pm | Sunday, September 4th, 2011
DAVAO City, Philippines—Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said he remained unconvinced by the explanation by the Aboitiz Power Corp. in proposing to source out the water needed to cool the turbines of the proposed 300 megawatt coal-fired power plant here, from the city’s fresh groundwater.
Duterte said the water expert presented to him in Friday’s committee hearing was not the one who actually made the study on the sustainability of Davao City’s groundwater but was only reading from a report of another expert now in Vietnam.
“Satisfy me first because if not, I may not participate in the deliberation (as a presiding officer) but I can still talk and I will object,” Duterte said during the Gikan sa Masa, para sa Masa Sunday television program.
The vice mayor was among those who had openly endorsed the project until he learned that the proposed 300-megawatt coal-fired power plant to be set up in the boundary areas of Binugao, Toril, would have to extract fresh water from the ground.
“Seawater can be corrosive to the turbine but there are two rivers running along Binugao and Santa Cruz, I said, why can’t you just get fresh water from there? They said it had something to do with the cost,” the vice mayor said.
“It will be cheaper for them to extract water from the ground but that’s not exactly what’s on my mind,” he added.
Duterte said the hydraulic expert presented during the committee hearing was not the one who made the study on the sustainability of the city’s groundwater supply.
“Sustainability means that it’s not only our generation who should enjoy water but also the next generation and the generation after that,” Duterte said.
“He was just reading a report of someone else. I don’t want to embarrass people. I was listening to him, he was reporting the report of another person. The one who conducted the experiment on the adequacy and inadequacy, assured that water is sustainable, but is there really enough water?” he asked. “These are the things that bothered me and I want answers backed up by wherewithal, by empirical and scientific data. I was not convinced, so I told Aboitiz, I’m sorry, I’m not satisfied.”
“Satisfy me first because if not, I will object,” Duterte said, adding he would let someone else preside the session should they submit the proposal for second reading because he would object.
“I want that experiment brought out in the open, so everyone will know,” he said.
Duterte said the power firm would have to use the water running in two rivers in Binugao and Santa Cruz, because he would object to the proposal to extract water from the ground to protect water sustainability for the next generation.

Escape From Davao: A Review
By Cris D. Kabasares

SAN FRANCISCO, California -- The book "Escape from Davao" is the most comprehensive account one is likely to read about the daring escape during World War II of 10 American prisoners of war (POW) and two Filipino convicts from Davao Penal Colony (Dapecol) in what is now Davao Del Norte.
Thus, the title of this outstanding 429-page book. It's an excellent read.
Have something to report? Tell us in text, photos or videos.
The author, John D. Lukacs, painstakingly weaved this story of the stunning escape of survivors of the infamous Bataan death march and Corregidor from what was reputed to be escape-proof Dapecol. There within its compound life of a prisoner of war hinged on what was left from diseases, malnutrition and cruelty of the Japanese captors.
The story of the bold break on April 4, 1943, known as "the greatest story of the war in the Pacific," is a product of an exhaustive research and impeccable writing of a first-rate historian.
For years, Lukacs, who started his career as a sports scribe, painstakingly thumbed through official records, documents, memoirs, diaries and cobwebbed letters to pluck the story. He actively sought and interviewed survivors and just about anyone who had something significant to contribute to the tale of the "only successful group escape from a Japanese POW camp during the war in the Pacific." He traveled to the decaying prison camps around the Philippines to get a feel of these places called "hellholes" by survivors.
Escape from Dapecol was "unimaginable and impossible." The place then was surrounded by impenetrable swamps, tangles of undergrowth, dense forests and large colonies of insects that invade the mouths, nostrils and ears.
Davao Prison and Penal Farm was built on January 21, 1932. It is the first and one of the oldest penal colonies in the Philippines. Located in Santo Tomas, Davao del Norte, the penal colony is sprawled at the vast Tadeco Banana Plantation.
Formerly known as the Davao Penal Colony, the Davao Prison and Penal Farm, it was established within a 5,212-hectare of land and was supervised by Bureau of Corrections and the Department of Justice (source: Philippine Encyclopedia).
The Americans and two Filipinos escaped successfully to freedom. At staggered schedules, the Americans reached Australia by submarine sent to pick them up from secret landing points in Mindanao and finally back to the United States.
The two Filipino convicts received pardon from President Manuel Quezon upon the recommendation of the American officers.
The escapees had one mission: tell the world of the atrocities of the Japanese committed against American and Filipino prisoners of war. The story, they hoped, would rally the nation behind the strategy to hasten the liberation of the Philippines.
But the military had other plans; it suppressed the story and ordered the officers to remain silent.
Washington war planners kept their reports under a "top secret" sanction to steer it away from altering ongoing plans and priorities. The United States and its European allies, notably the United Kingdom, had a different timetable to pursue the war.
It was "Europe First Policy," the Pacific region has to wait for a little while. One other concern was: disclosure of the report at that stage of the war could incite the Japanese to take reprisals against the American prisoners of war in the Philippines and other places in Asia. It was one of those times when the Filipinos learned where they stood in the scheme of things vis-a-vis their relationship with the United States.
It was not until January 28, 1944, nearly a year after the fact, that the report was finally released to the public. It created a furor all over the United States.
The escape succeeded with the willing help and cooperation of Filipinos who risked death in the hands of the Japanese had they been caught, and Lukacs made sure to point that out in the story.
The first time was when a small band of guerrillas operating in that part of Davao ambushed a Japanese patrol from Dapecol that was sent to recapture the escapees as they emerged days later from the jungle.
From there, Filipino guerrillas and courageous civilians took turns in guiding them move safely through mountains and jungles from Davao to Misamis Oriental. They escorted them from one guerrilla unit to another, including the command headed by legendary American Colonel William Fertig.
They trekked with them through farmlands, behind Japanese lines, rivers and guerrilla-held towns where the escapees were welcomed as heroes. Along the way, Filipino civilians provided them with food and kept their whereabouts a secret.
"Escape From Davao" brings back to life this remarkable tale of men at the most challenging times of their lives -- a story of raw courage, patriotism and loyalty.
Mindanaoans now know that the most daring breakaway from a Japanese prisoner of war camp during World War II in the Pacific had taken place in Davao. It's a story that was almost lost to the exigencies of time.

FIVE young budding artists from Davao recently joined the Czech Embassy Manila's art competition dubbed as "Guhit ESko: the Czech Republic Through my Eyes."
Twenty-two official entries from Manila, Cebu and Davao were featured during the art exhibit held at the Philippines' premier children's museum--Museo Pambata along Roxas Boulevard, Manila.
Have something to report? Tell us in text, photos or videos.
The children's art exhibit, which was the first in a series of art competitions being hosted by the Czech Embassy Manila’s Cultural Section, aimed to "provide a glimpse of the Czech Republic’s sights, traditions and culture through the eyes of Philippine child artists aged 10-14".
A cornucopia of breathtaking children’s artworks was on display during the two-week exhibit, which included paintings, drawings, a divadlo (Czech theatre) model and a wooden replica of the world-renowned Charles Bridge.
Mary Anne Tan-Guinoo, a Davao-based contemporary artist and sought-after art teacher, was the supportive mentor of the Dabawenyo junior artists, namely: Abegail Denise Louh, Kristen Marie Suarez, Denise Marie Suarez, Arian Melina Guinoo and Caye Alessandro Francisco.
Two of the Davao entries were chosen as among the ten finalists.
Kristen Marie Suarez, a Grade 5 student of St. Paul College Pasig Davao’s acrylic on canvas entry was entitled “A Czech Lady Selling Knedliky Pastries”.
“Kristen wanted to come up with fashion and Czechs all together so she decided to make a portrait of a Czech woman dressed in the country’s national costume while carrying some delicious goodies for sale”, explains Mary Anne.
In addition, Davao Christian High School third year high school student Abegail Denise Louh’s masterpiece, “Heavenly Lights”, almost came in the top five.
“Abegail played with warm hues using orange, red, brown and yellow tones. It is oil on canvas but has a water color effect. She artistically showed the historical structure of the Czech Republic—an awesome vision which encourages us to go visit the place”, describes the proud art instructor.
During the opening ceremonies held last month, the participants were given certificates of recognition by Monika Kazdova, Third Secretary and Consul and Head of the Cultural Section of the Czech Embassy Manila and Maricel Montero, Museo Pambata executive director.
The awarding of winners followed shortly with De La Salle Zobel’s Trina Francesca Pagtakhan bagging the first prize. Her brilliant artwork, “Czech’s Republic’s Culture in the Eyes of the World”, represented the richness of the Czech Republic’s culture. It portrayed a small town in Czech Republic with the residents donning traditional costumes while dancing and playing music.
Meanwhile, Philippine High School for the Arts student Ron Emilio Limos’ artwork, “Puzzled”, was adjudged second place. On the other hand, Vanessa Gayle Tangcueco of St. Jude Catholic School’s “Window of Czech Republic” was chosen as the third place winner.
The winners received trophies, cash prizes, Czech commemorative coins and art supplies.
The Czech Embassy Manila will be hosting another painting contest this September.
“Sining ESko” (literally translated as “My Czech Art”) is open to college and university level artists aged 16-21 from all over the Philippines.
With the theme, “The Czech Republic Through my Eyes”, the contest’s objective is to showcase the Filipino artist’s talents in the visual arts by combining the use of common art media with indigenous Philippine materials. Submission of entries is from September 1-30, 2011.
Kudos to the Czech Embassy Manila for honing the talents of our young Filipino artists and fostering closer ties between the two countries!
Special thanks to Jorem and Sheila Catilo Photography for the event’s photos.

Abreeza Mall culminates its month-long celebration of Kadayawan, the city’s much-awaited abundance festival, with a fun-filled show featuring Bench top endorsers Shaina Magdayao, Sam Concepcion and Rafael Rosell as well as ASAP Rocks stars Gab Valenciano, Megan Young, Angeline Quinto, Bugoy Carino and The G-Force. As soon as the mall opened, the activity center was packed with fans eagerly anticipating the start of the show which was specifically developed by the creative team of ASAP for Abreeza Mall.
In attendance during the show were Congressman Anton Lagdameo and Mr. Ricky Floirendo of the Anflo Group, Ayala Land’s partner in the Abreeza project. Ayala Land Commercial Business Group Heads, Ms. Rowena Tomeldan and Ms. Cora Dizon, together with the Abreeza Mall team personally welcomed the ASAP and Bench stars to Davao through a special lunch.
Also in line with the Kadayawan festival, Abreeza Mall made a big splash as its floral float which was themed “Color Me Kadayawan!”, placed first at the “Pamulak sa Kadalanan” or Pamulak Float Parade, the closing activity and highlight of the Kadayawan festival. Abreeza Mall’s float, depicting Davao’s bounty and lush landscape in stunning color and grandeur also incorporated the mall’s launch advertising visuals. Making use of carefully-handpicked selection of flowers and other natural materials, the float truly stood out from the rest, with its focus on well executed design, attention to detail and noteworthy craftsmanship. The float was developed in collaboration with the Puentespina group, Davao’s premier flower producer. Local craftsmen and women from the community were gathered to work on this award-winning creation. It is Abreeza Mall’s first entry into the Pamulak float parade.

Davao gears up for M.I.C.E.September 2, 2011 9:25 pm
MANILA, Sept. 2 –Former Department of Tourism(DOT) Alberto A. Lim said before clearing his desk Thursday that Davao City, known as the “Fruit Basket and Orchid Capital of the Philippines, is revving up to sustain its position as a top destination for meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (M.I.C.E.).Lim said that through a program initiated by the DOT, dubbed as "Let's Meet in Davao," the city has hit the ground inviting all MICE market segments to enjoy the islands to highlands allure of the Southern Mindanao region.
As the center of business, trade and investment throughout the region as well as a key player in flourishing trading hub of the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area, tourism in Davao has grown in leaps and bounds.Davao City, in particular, has developed a set of well-educated professionals and highly skilled staff experienced in the unique and demanding needs of the local and international MICE markets.
The city hosted the 25th Tourism Forum of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2006, which became its entry to the world of international MICE.
“I remember that Davao was able to pull off that feat in organizing an international event of that magnitude in so short a time."It transcended a big challenge to volunteer as the host of the annual gathering of the discriminating tourism officials and travel executives of the 10-member countries of the ASEAN in less than a year when the country responsible to host it suddenly backed out. That amazing feat was the talk of the travel world for a long time,” Lim said.
By being magnificently blessed with its natural, cultural and human resources, Davao can always deliver beyond the expectations of every MICE planner, organizer and delegate, Lim said.
"The multiplier effect of MICE creates a ripple effect that benefits almost all sectors in the economy," Jason Magnaye, Tourism Operations Officer of Davao City, said during the fellowship dinner of the 37th Philippine Society of Training and Development (PSTD) National Convention held at the first-class Apo View Hotel recently.
Magnaye also listed down the national MICE held in Davao since the start of the year and underscored multi-million peso revenues for the city.
National President Francis Jesse Rebustillo of the Philippine Society of Training and Development complemented Davao’s MICE dream by sharing their association's vision of making the Philippines as the training hub of Asia.
"The MICE Davao Program launch during our national convention really captures target markets that will help make it happen for city," Rebustillo said.
Rebustillo highlighted the presence of executives from various organizations who are keys in choosing destinations for their MICE needs from de luxe class hotel or class AAA resort to apartelle or special interest resort for accommodations and meeting venues.
In between exotic performances depicting ethnic festivals of the region, the Department of Tourism (DOT) launched its Davao MICE Program through its MICE Desk.
"The Department of Tourism is pleased to establish its MICE Desk that aims to help organizers and planners in making their next MICE activity very productive as well as truly meaningful and memorable in Davao," Regional Director Art Boncato of DOT-Region 11 said.
Some services offered by DOT’s MICE Desk consist of the extension of information and advice to planners and organizers; promotions through traditional and new media; and airport support and reception at the Davao International Airport.
Tiered non-monetary incentives for organizers and/or organizations are also available.
A Davao MICE Manual can be downloaded from the www.micedavao.com for details on how to avail of the Davao MICE Desk services for groups of less than a thousand delegates. (PNA) RMA/LOR

lakawero September 6th, 2011, 05:26 AM Bohol province top in governance (http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/53729/bohol-province-top-in-governance)
Bohol emerged as the country’s best governed province while Valenzuela and Ligao came out as the best governed among highly urbanized cities and component cities, respectively, according to the latest performance report released by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).
The DILG on Sunday announced the 10 provinces and 20 cities that scored high in the Local Governance Performance Management System (LGPMS) report for 2010.
Managed by the DILG, the LGPMS is a web-based, self-assessment tool that measures the performance of local government units (LGUs) in key governance areas.
It assesses the performance of cities and provinces in administrative, social, economic and environmental governance.
It also assesses local government units in terms of transparency, participation and financial accountability, the guideposts for good governance.
The LGUs are scored accordingly, with one as the lowest and five as the highest.
Among the provinces, Bohol scored 4.9370 followed closely by La Union with 4.9115.
The rest of the 10 top-performing provinces are Bulacan with 4.8628; Negros Oriental, 4.8331; Pangasinan, 4.8185; Ilocos Norte, 4.8185; Albay, 4.8064; Cavite,4.8031; Compostela Valley, 4.7812; and Tarlac, 4.7773.
Valenzuela, meanwhile, scored 4.9150 to lead the top performing highly urbanized and independent component cities.
San Juan followed with 4.8875; Puerto Princesa, 4.8640; Angeles, 4.7410; Davao, 4.7380; Naga, 4.6940; Zamboanga, 4.6865; Iligan, 4.6710; Cebu, 4.6633; and Taguig, 4.6415.
Among component cities, Ligao was the top performer with a score of 4.9240; followed by Laoag, 4.9193; San Fernando, 4.9177; Vigan, 4.8617; Gingoog, 4.8568; Cabanatuan, 4.8363; Dipolog, 4.8113; La Carlota, 4.7553; Iriga, 4.7522; and Batac, 4.7430.
Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo said a team composed of representatives from the national and local governments conducted the assessment while civil society organizations validated the results to ensure impartiality.
“I laud these local governments for their commitment in elevating and maintaining the highest standards of public service delivery in their respective localities. I hope that their shining examples will inspire others to strive hard in the performance of their duties,” Robredo said.
In Pampanga, three cities and 16 towns in Central Luzon received the Seal of Good Housekeeping from the DILG, enabling them to get P3 million (for cities) and P1 million (for towns), for local projects. /INQUIRER

Cebu City in 9th place of DILG rating

CEBU CITY -- Two provinces in Central Visayas made it to the country’s 10 top performing provinces, according to the latest performance report of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG).
The DILG also named Cebu City one of the top performing highly urbanized cities in the country.
Have something to report? Tell us in text, photos or videos.
"They deserve to be awarded," said DILG-Central Visayas Director Pedro Noval, referring to the Provinces of Bohol and Negros Oriental, and Cebu City.
Bohol emerged as the best governed province, while Negros Oriental ranked fourth.
Noval said the two provinces strictly observed and complied with circulars from the National Government.
He added officials of the two provinces also practice accountability and transparency.
"They show their documents and records, especially in the disbursement of funds. They let the public know," said Noval.
The DILG revealed the top 10 provinces and 20 cities that scored high in the Local Governance Performance Management System (LGPMS) report for 2010 last Sunday.
City Hall welcomes the results of the DILG performance rating for local government units.
"Congratulations to all of us," said Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama.
But Rama asked if DILG had compared Cebu City with other highly urbanized cities during the rating process.
"Kay kung magstorya ta og real estate and cities that are economically active, wa man siguro'y makapildi nato ana (Nothing compares to Cebu City when it comes to real estate and economic development). But whatever it is, we are proud that we are part of the performing cities," he said.
Based on DILG records, highly urbanized cities and independent component cities were evaluated as one category.
Cities
The top performing cities in the highly urbanized and independent component cities category are Valenzuela (first); San Juan (second); Puerto Princesa (third); Angeles (fourth); Davao (fifth); Naga, Bicol (sixth); Zamboanga (seventh); Iligan (eighth); Cebu (ninth); and Taguig (10th).
City administrator Jose Marie Poblete said the inclusion of Cebu City in the top 10 list is "something we can be proud of."
But it is also a wake-up call for the City Government, he said, considering that Cebu City only ranked ninth in the list.
"Hapit na ta sa iwit. Klaro kaayo nga nalupigan na ta sa walo (We're nearly at the bottom. Clearly, eight cities bested us). We have to continue improving our delivery of services. It is one of the thrusts of our mayor," he said.
Tool
The LGPMS, which is administered by the DILG, is a Web-based, self-assessment tool that measures the performance of local government units in key governance areas.
It evaluates the performance of cities and provinces in administrative, social, economic and environmental governance.
It also assesses local government units in terms of transparency, participation and financial accountability.
The provinces and cities are scored in a scale of 1 to 5, 1 being the lowest and 5 the highest.
Bohol scored 4.9370, followed by La Union with 4.9115.
The rest of the top performing provinces are Bulacan with 4.8628; Negros Oriental, 4.8331; Pangasinan, 4.8185; Ilocos Norte, 4.8185; Albay, 4.8064; Cavite, 4.8031; Compostela Valley, 4.7812; and Tarlac, 4.7773. (RSB/PDF/Sun.Star Cebu)

By Gigie Arcilla-Agtay

BEING the biggest economy in Mindanao makes Davao an important market for Globe Telecom.
Thus, said Globe Telecom president and Chief Executive Officer Ernest Cu in a press conference during the opening of the company's first flagship store at the Abreeza Mall.
The Davao City flagship store, Cu said, is the first in Southern Mindanao and the 12 nationwide. Other flagship new concept stores are located at Greenbelt 4, Alabang Town Center, Ayala Center Cebu, Trinoma, Market Market, and SM Malls in North Edsa, Megamall, Mall of Asia, Batngas, Pampanga and Mandurriao.
Cu said Globe now has 33 concept stores nationwide. The first flagship store was opened in June 2010 in Greenbelt 4 Makati City. To date, Globe has more than 134 retail stores nationwide -- 19 of which are in Mindanao.
Of the 19 stores, three are full concept stores located in the Gaisano Mall of Tagum City, Limketkai Mall in Cagayan de Oro City, and Abreeza Mall.
"The flagship store was developed with customers in mind. With this, Globe is worthy of being called premier in telecoms concept store," Cu said. "By end of 2011, we hope to have 70 concept stores nationwide."
.
.
.
"We want our customer interface to be as convenient and seamless as possible. The store has everything our clients want -- from the latest gadgets to bills payment and customizable plan offers. It is an altogether a different retail experience befitting an innovative telecommunications company like Globe," Cu said.
Bithos said aside from fast transactions, the flagship store has a self-help area for bill printing and other queries.
The Globe Retail Concept Store is designed exclusively for Globe by an Australian-based architectural firm -- Public Design Group whose award winning projects include retail stores of Optus, Singtel, Payless Shoe Source and Toyota Racing development.
Each store offers a wide range of products and services including the hottest gadgets that customers can try and test. The store's modern layout allows customers to easily browse around the products display and request for after sales support.
With Davao on top of Globe's list of focus areas being a tourist destination and with big consumer spending, Cu announced the company's roll-out of the country's 1st 4G HSPA+ mobile network, solutions for enterprise and SMEs customers, and network upgrades that best meet global standards.
Cu said there will be 200 sites of HSPA+ -- a technology that provides High Speed Packet Access data rates.
Globe, he said, is also the first to roll out Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) -- a version of the Internet Protocol (IP). It is designed to succeed the Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4).
The Internet operates by transferring data between hosts in small packets that are independently routed across networks as specified by an international communications protocol known as the Internet Protocol.
Interconnection
Cu said Globe recently acquired an interconnection with PLDT in two more areas -- Pampanga and Laguna bringing to 11 the number of areas that Globe and PLDT are locally interconnected. The other areas Davao City, Batangas, Cavite, Cebu, Bohol, Leyte, Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, and Cotabato City.
"Interconnection is a touchy issue that requires city intervention. My hope is that the national government will see the difficulty that telcos are having. We won't stop until other provinces have internection with Globe," said Cu.
He hopes that interconnection agreements with PLDT will be hastened for the benefit of the consumers as part of efforts to develop the country's telecommunications infrastructure and provide consumers with a more cost-efficient way of communications.

by Mai Gevera-Macapagat
DAVAO CITY September 7 (PIA) -- The Davao City local government targets to join the roster of LGUs that have completed and are implementing a Business Permits and Licensing System (BPLS).
In yesterday’s National Competitive Council Roadshow held at Grand Men Seng Hotel, City Planning Officer Roberto P. Alabado III disclosed that the BPLS which is now a priority program of the present local administration is instrumental in upgrading the services of the LGU.
“ This also gives us a benchmark as to how we are fairing with other cities.”, he said.
It is also here in Davao City that new policies were created to satisfy the needs of most new SMEs. The city allows for the issuance of a temporary business permit which the business enterprise can use for one month while the permit is being processed.
NCC private sector co-chairman Guillermo Luz lauded Davao City for joining the existing 221 LGUs who have been implementing BPLS. There are currently 119 LGUs which are in the process of fixing processes to finally implement a complete BPLS.
This program is aimed to streamline business permits and licensing system in the country to the target 480 LGUs by 2014.
BPLS follows a standard that limits the processing time of LGUs to issue business permits and licenses to a maximum of 10 days from the date of submission of the application form.
This also required the LGU to have a unified form each for new applications and renewals as well as to have a limited number of steps in processing applications and renewals.
Luz bared that Philippines dropped four notches from its previous ranking of 144th in 2010 to 148th this year through the Doing Business Survey conducted by the IFC. Singapore leads the survey since 2009 and tailed by other ASEAN countries like Thailand , Malaysia and Vietnam .
The survey shows that Philippines needs to prioritize efforts in starting a business, dealing with construction permits, and closing a business. The NCC called the attention of concerned government agencies like the Department of Trade and Industry, Bureau of Internal Revenue, local government units, and the Department of Interior and Local Government to work on these priority areas.
Aside from BPLS, the NCC also pushes for other priority projects such as the Performance Governance System Balanced Scorecard, the Philippine Business Registry (PBR), the National Single Window (NSW), and the Transparency in Budget Delivery.
NCC is mandated to promote and develop competitiveness strategies and push for the implementation of an action agenda for competitiveness and link it to the Philippine Development Plan. (PIA 11/Mai Gevera-Macapagat)

MALAYBALAY CITY (MindaNews/04 September) — Two Davao-based writers won the Second and Third Prizes in the short story Cebuano Category in the 2011 Contest of the Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature, the country’s most prestigious literary awards.
Errol A. Merquita, a graduate of AB Social Science from UP Mindanao, took the Second Prize for his entry titled “Isla Verde.”
This is Merquita’s first Palanca award. Last year, he won the Second Prize in the Bisaya Fiction Writing Contest sponsored by the Davao Writers Guild and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts for his entry titled “Kinsa ang Nagpatay sa Pari sa Calinan?”
Dr. Macario D. Tiu, the Research Director of the Philippine Women’s College of Davao, took the Third Prize for his entry titled “Black Pearl.” This is Tiu’s fourth Palanca award.
The awarding ceremonies were held at the Manila Peninsula on September 1.
In Bisag Unsa (August 31, 2011), his column in MindaNews, Tiu intimated that “Black Pearl” was inspired by a personal experience years ago in Samal Island, where he bought for P1000 a piece of black pearl which turned out to be a fake. A jeweller told him it was just a black onyx worth P20.
Tiu first entered the story in the Palanca Contest last year, but it failed to win a prize. He said he shortened the piece from 19 to 13 pages and made some revisions before submitting it again this year to the same contest. (MindaNews)

He hopes that interconnection agreements with PLDT will be hastened for the benefit of the consumers as part of efforts to develop the country's telecommunications infrastructure and provide consumers with a more cost-efficient way of communications.
nice but whats the difference between flagship and concept stores?

2 Davao writers bag Palanca Awards (http://www.mindanews.com/top-stories/2011/09/04/2-davao-writers-bag-palanca-awards/)

(MindaNews)

From my personal research the B'laan myth on Human origin is very very ancient, even more ancient than the biblical version of Adam & Eve, and also coincided with the existence of the legendary lost continent of Lemuria or MU with these archipelagic islands, especially Mt. MtApoStandard September 8th, 2011, 11:57 AM Davao visitors get access to tourism info thru SMS service
Posted at 6:39 pm September 05, 2011
MAKATI CITY, METRO MANILA— Davao is the first location in the country to have a customized SIM and Infoboard to promote local tourism.
The Infoboard from Smart Communications is a web-based messaging solution that offers functionalities designed to address the needs of the Department of Tourism (DoT).
Through the Infoboard, the DoT will have the capability to broadcast advisories to its various stakeholders, including tourists. The project is part of the “Pilipinas, Tara Na!” advocacy program for domestic tourism.
Davao is a prime business, investment and tourism hub for Mindanao and Southern Philippines, in general.
The Infoboard provides instant access to destinations and promote special events, festivals, conferences exhibits and related tourism activities, said Art Boncato, DoT regional director for Davao.
“The National Tourism Development Plan (NTDP), that DoT finished for presentation to President Aquino, focuses on bringing development to the regions like positioning airports to accept direct flights as afforded by the open skies policy of the president,” Boncato said.
According to Boncato, Davao is at the threshold of great tourism growth with increasing domestic and international flights, new hotels, new islands to highland products in Davao Oriental, Davao del Sur, Davao del Norte and Compostela Valley and Davao City.
The technology is aimed to enable more tourists to repeat visits in Davao and other parts of the country by offering them ease of information.

Abreeza Mall hosts homegrown restaurants

MANILA, Philippines - He never had a chance to meet him in person, but Michael M. Wee, CEO and president of Grab A Crab Coffee Club 101, was a huge fan of the co-founder and publisher of The Philippine STAR, the late Max Soliven, respected journalist and giant in the newspaper industry. “I admired him for his insightful writings,” Wee says, “not only about the news but also about people. He takes you to many places. His writings widened your horizon.” So, as a participating restaurant in the EAT dining festival at Abreeza Mall in Davao City to celebrate Philippine STAR’s 25th anniversary, he named Grab a Crab’s STAR dish “Fried Shrimp Ball a la Soliven.”
The house specialties are the crabs, the star of which is the Alaskan King Crab. Among the best-sellers are the hot garlic crab, the Shanghai Szechuan crab, and the Hong Kong steam with garlic crab, which we savored with gusto. Simply steamed in garlic, ginger and leeks, there was nothing complicated about the dish. The crab’s freshness and sweetness spoke for itself.

Chef Tristan Encarnacion with Ranchero’s Star Liempo
The first Grab A Crab restaurant can be found in General Santos where Wee is based. He comes to Davao, which is just a two-hour drive away, to check on his restaurant at Abreeza on weekends. “We have an aquarium for the live fish,” Wee remarks. You can order your live lapu-lapu and pampano fresh out of the tank.
In another part of the restaurant is the coffee shop, which accounts for the other half of the restaurant’s name, Grab A Crab Coffee Club 101. Wee thought that it would be a good idea if the diners at the restaurant did not have to go elsewhere to have their coffee after their meal. Wee is himself a big coffee drinker, consuming at least seven cups a day, the last three before going to bed at night.
Wee started in the hardware business but, he says, he enjoys his restaurants more. He likes meeting and talking with people. “It’s a lot better than counting nuts and bolts at the hardware all day,” he laughs.
Ranchero’s STAR dish is simply named “Star Liempo.” It is an innovation of a traditional Filipino dish. “While liempo is usually grilled, this time, it is deep fried,” Ranchero owner, Paulo Sunglao, explains. The thin slices of crispy liempo dipped in vinegar with chopped onions and ginger is truly appetizing.
http://img703.imageshack.us/img703/2024/leisure14c350.jpg
Christian de la Paz of Hanoi and Tsuru
Ranchero’s cuisine is described as Filipino ranch-style cooking. “It’s the type of cooking that the locals call ‘kinowboy,’” says the young Sunglao, whose family used to own a ranch in General Santos. Standout dishes at the restaurant are the imported certified US Angus steaks and baby back ribs. And for dessert, must-try are the sticky rice with latik and panucha; maja blanca with corn crean and leche flan.
“We are the only restaurant in Davao City that offers buffet lunch and dinner everyday,” says Enrik Yap, operation manager and owner of Ranch & Reef at the third floor of Abreeza Mall. They also have a salad bar. At the carving station, there’s Peking duck and lechon kawali. “We have roast beef tenderloin for dinner only,” Yap says, “and on weekends, we also offer sushi and maki as appetizers.”
The Star Warm Brownie Cup is Ranch & Reef’s STAR dish, served ala mode. That’s the scoop of the day, a perfect ending to a filling buffet meal.
The Durian Star Suman is Hanoi’s STAR dish. Hanoi operations manager and owner, Christian de la Paz, who was born in Davao, loves durian. Their homemade durian pie is also good. It goes well with the citrus herb juice, which is refreshing. “We grow our own herbs for use in our kitchen,” says De la Paz. “And since Davao is also known for its sweet pomelo, we also have pomelo salad in our menu.”
http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/5352/leisure14d300.jpg
Enrik Yap of Ranch & Reef
“We are the first and only authentic Vietnamese restaurant in Davao,” says De la Paz, whose family which owns Casa Leticia in Davao City, had always been in the hotel and restaurant business. The best-sellers at Hanoi are the crabs that come in three flavors: garlic and butter, tamarind, and sweet and chili; the phos; and the spring rolls that you roll yourself. Their dishes have authentic Vietnamese names such as cha nuong and hu tieu tam thit. Vietnamese residents in the city have become regular customers, and Koreans who love the soups, as well as Filipinos, residents and tourists alike.
On the same level as Hanoi, on the ground floor of Abreeza Mall, is Tsuru Japanese Restaurant and Sushi Bar, which is also owned and managed by De la Paz. This is its third branch. Tsuru first opened elsewhere in the city some 21 years ago. After taking a course at the Le Cordon Bleu culinary school in the US, De la Paz introduced a number of new dishes to the menu. “We decided to have a branch here at the mall so we can be known better,” he says. They may eventually open a branch outside Davao City.
http://img846.imageshack.us/img846/1996/leisure14e300.jpghttp://img689.imageshack.us/img689/5820/leisure14f300.jpg
Tsuru’s STAR dish is the Karai Maguro Star or spicy tuna sushi.
“It’s a well-known 21-year-old dish,” de la Paz says. The fresh tuna comes from the country’s tuna capital, General Santos.
“Our participating merchants were excited about the opportunity to join the food festival and take advantage of a wider reach,” says Gel Ferrer, Abreeza Mall marketing manager. “These are mostly homegrown concepts. It is an advocacy of the Ayala group to help the regional businesses and the community where we are located.”
It’s been four months since Abreeza Mall opened in Davao City in May this year. “People say when Abreeza came, the lifestyle of Davao changed,” Ferrer remarked. “They have become more fashion conscious. They eat out more. They have more choices.”

EAT Dining Festival cooking demos go to Abreeza Mall in Davao City.
By Julie Cabatit-Alegre
September 08, 2011 12:00 AM
MANILA, Philippines - They applauded, they screamed, they lined up to have their pictures taken with him. He was, in every sense of the word, a celebrity. A celebrity chef, that is. But it’s not only his good looks that got the girls and even the boys in the audience going gaga. Chef Tristan Encarnacion knows that for him to give a good cooking demonstration, he needs to connect with his audience. His secret ingredient is his natural charm. Actually, when asked what the secret ingredient in good cooking was, he replied, “You must have the passion and heart for it, and nothing will go wrong.”
Chef Tristan’s featured recipe was pan-seared duck breast with blackberry cream sauce. But since neither duck breast nor blackberries were available, he used chicken breast and grapes instead. This was the first lesson. If certain ingredients are not available, you can substitute.
http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/1916/leisure12b.jpg
He also prepared wild mushroom risotto to go with the chicken dish. His advice: “Don’t wash the rice to keep its starch content.”
And then came the best part, the tasting.
Host Joey Domingo called for volunteers from the audience.
Five students from St. Mary’s College of Tagum City, which is an hour away from Davao City, went up the stage and spontaneously became part of the show.
After the hour and a half of cooking demonstration, it took another half hour of picture taking with his fans before chef Tristan could fold his apron away. Actually, it was his chef’s jacket, which he did not put away but instead generously gave it to a lucky student of a culinary school who was among those who came up the stage to have their own chef’s jackets autographed by the crush ng bayan de jour, celebrity chef Tristan Encarnacion.
Not many people know that chef Shirly May Galvez is the older sister of actor and Sumo Sam co-owner Marvin Agustin. Chef Shirly specializes in Korean and Japanese cuisines “with a twist,” she says.
She came with chef Roy Tan of John & Yoko, another restaurant co-owned by Marvin Agustin.
“The thing about doing a cooking demonstration outside of your own kitchen is you often do not know what to expect,” notes chef Roy. Even doing the preparation can be tricky. Fortunately, they were able to use the kitchen of Seafood Island, owned by Raymond Magdaluyo, who also happens to be a business associate of Agustin, for their preps.
The good news is that Sumo Sam will soon have its own kitchen at Abreeza as it opens a branch on Sept. 10 at the mall.
Chef Shirly shared three recipes: the crunchy kani roll (appetizer), Sumo Sam’s Pride (salad), and pepper-crusted chicken (entrée). For the kani roll, you can use Jasmine rice if Japanese rice is not available. Chef Shirly generously shared the recipe of Sumo Sam’s Pride, which is actually an item in the restaurant’s menu. Chef Ray demonstrated how to de-bone a chicken for the pepper-crusted chicken, which was later served on a bed of linguini.
The second day’s cooking demonstration was preceded by TGI Friday’s Champion Bartending competition. First place went to Janvah Nellas of the Mindanao State University; Leo Algueza second place; Luis Jardine, third place.
http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/5641/leisure12c.jpg
The front act for the cooking demonstration on the final day of the three-day event at Abreeza Mall in Davao City was the much-awaited mother and daughter cake decorating contest. Seven pairs of six to 12 year olds together with their moms signed up for the challenge. Chef Erwina “Booboo” Maramba of the Center for Asian Culinary Studies (Davao campus) and Wilton USA cake decorating instructor and baking instructor, who was one of the judges, gave the contestants some tips: sprinkle powdered sugar under the plastic sheet so the fondant will not stick to it; apply syrup on the cake so the fondant will stick to it; be patient when mixing colors.
Three of the seven pairs apparently paid close attention and won bragging rights. First prize went to Rhea Lacson and Rishi Cloraine Lason; Marie Yap and Cara Yap, second prize; Pamela Lorraine Lim and Samantha Reese Egano, third prize.
The main event that weekend was chef Heny Sison’s cooking demonstration. She shared three of her signature recipes: choux puffs with mushroom filling; penne pasta with two pesto sauces (basil and walnut pesto); and strawberries in marsala with honey and mascarpone cream.
As always, chef Heny came well-prepared and shared countless tips and trivia with her audience. Did you know that it was the Italians who taught the French how to cook? The basics of cooking originated in Italy and it was only the French who documented it. You can see the Italian flag in their pizza Margherita, with its white sauce, red tomato, and green pesto. Chef Heny always keeps cooked pasta in her freezer so that it’s ready to use anytime. When cooking Italian food, she prefers to use rock salt instead of iodized salt. Precious morsels of wisdom, food for thought.
And so, another weekend of Philippine STAR’s EAT Dining Festival cooking demonstration tour came to pass. The next event will be at the Ayala Center Cebu from Sept. 9 to11 with chefs Heny Sison, Shirly May Galvez, and Tristan Encarnacion.

CEBU City, Philippines—Despite fears of adverse impact on the Philippine economy due to the US and Europe debt concerns, Ayala Land Inc. (ALI) group of companies remains bullish over real estate prospects in the Visayas and Mindanao where it would be investing about P20 billion in this year and in the next two years.
“We are still very bullish about the market and economy in Cebu despite what you heard about the US economy and Europe debt problems. Cebu is shielded from that,” says Francis Monera, ALI vice president and president of ALI subsidiary Cebu Holdings Inc.
Monera says the current growth drivers in Cebu were the win-win industries of tourism and business process outsourcing.
Cebu ranked third in total tourist arrivals in 2010 with its 1.77 million visitors, 712,400 of whom were foreigners.
More than 100 IT-BPO firms operate in Cebu City, with 60,000 direct employees and $720 million in annual revenues in 2010.
“Cebu is strong in terms of OFWs (overseas Filipino workers) and the retail.
Putting this together, we are looking at the economy that’s going to be vibrant,” he says in a recent interview.
For this reason, Monera says the Ayala group would be putting in more investments in Cebu.
“We feel that Cebu is where we should put more of our financial resources,” he adds.
The Ayala group’s investments in Cebu would reach P10 billion starting this year and in the next two years, according to Rico Manuel, chief finance officer of ALI Visayas and Mindanao.
About 50 percent of the P10 billion would be spent this year on several projects including the Ayala Center Cebu expansion that costs P2 billion, Manuel says. Half of the P10-billion funding would be spent in 2011.
The other projects in Cebu are the Alveo Condominium’s Sedona Parc, 1016 Residences of the Ayala Land Premier, Avida Tower 1 and 2 in AsiaTown IT Park, e-Bloc 2 and Amara’s The Parks.
Monera also notes that the Amara, a residential project undertaken by CHI and Coastal Highpoint Ventures (CHVI), has appreciated in value.
“When it was first launched, the average price per square meter of Amara was P9,800. Now, it’s P20,000 per square meter,” he says.
The Parks is the latest phase of the Amara, which is located on a 46-hectare property in Barangay (village) Catarman, Liloan, 18 km north of Cebu City.
Monera says CHI has allocated P200 million for the fifth phase of the Amara, which has a total project cost of P1 billion. The Amara carries the Ayala Land Premier brand which is set only for renowned communities such as Ayala Alabang, Forbes Park and Dasmariñas Village in Metro Manila.
Monera says that the ALI group also sees bright prospects in other areas of the Visayas and Mindanao, where they have several projects.
In the next two to three years, Ayala would be investing between P3 billion and P5 billion in Bacolod City in five subdivision projects (Ayala North Point, Plantazionne Verdana Homes, Verdana Homes Asyana, Avida NorthPoint and Amaia Scapes NorthPoint), Ayala Northpoint Retail, Ayala Northpoint Technohub and in its project at a property owned by the Negros Occidental provincial government.
In Iloilo, Ayala would be putting in between P300 million and P500 million for the construction of Avida Village and a BPO facility.
On the other hand, Ayala group would spend P4-P5 billion in the next three years in
Davao for three projects, Abreeza Mall, Kukun Hotel and the Abreeza BPO facility that would be an extension of the mall.
In Cagayan de Oro, Ayala group’s projects, Centrio Mall, Kukun Hotel and Alegria Hills, would cost P3-P4 billion over three years, starting this year, Manuel says.
mCx2 September 8th, 2011, 02:01 PM siguro the City should also consider sprucing up the road signs, road markings etc. ang crossing dili na klaro....
I remembred that our city roads(downtown)have been ovelayed with bitumen(asphalt)many times over that's why the middle part loolks like a mound(the visible part is on the kerbside where layers upon layers are evident:lol:).whereas the proper way of doing it is to scrape the old one and apply new overlay.Way beneath these layers of bitumen is i think old cracked concrete roads.

eflex September 9th, 2011, 02:29 AM Fresh and sweet treats from
Krispy Kreme doughnuts
THOSE residing in the Southern metropolis, or simply heading South for a weekend getaway either to see Tagaytay, the beaches of Batangas, the resorts of Laguna and Quezon or the old Churches in Southern Tagalog, could now easily enjoy fresh donuts and other sweet treats from Krispy Kreme Doughnuts after they opened their 24th branch at the Festival Mall in Alabang last September 3.
"For people in the South who crave for lip-smacking taste of Krispy Kreme doughnuts, best paired with Krispy Kreme coffee, there’s no need to drive that far to enjoy these delectable treats. Krispy Kreme’s hotlight is now lighting up the South to make sure you get your favorite Krispy Kreme treat hot and fresh," Mark Gamboa, marketing manager of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts-Philippines said.
Since opening its first branch at the Bonifacio Global City five years ago, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts has now become a popular treat among Filipinos.
Krispy Kreme Doughnuts-Philippines executive Carlyn Trota-Salud said they also specifically chose the location of their new branch – located at the ground floor of the Festival Mall fronting the car park area – to make it more accessible to their patrons especially those who just want to drive by for those glazed donuts and freshly brewed coffee.
"So when you see the Krispy Kreme’s hotlight lighting up, it means that newly cooked glazed donuts, which are best paired with the Krispy Kreme coffee are available and you could easily take us with you whether your on your way to Tagaytay or to you home in the South," she said.
Krispy Kreme Doughnuts- Philippines Chairman Jim Fuentebella said their Festival Mall branch is also the first store that bore the new wall graphics design of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts.
"This store is actually a prototype of the future stores of Krispy Kreme. The US’ Krispy Kreme Inc. said they needed it built, to experiment if it would be a hit and we said we’ll make it a reality. What you see here is the future of the Krispy Kreme stores," he said.
Best known for mixing doughnuts with popular treats like Hershey’s cookies and creams, Snickers classic peanut butter and kremes chocolates and its latest flavor, donuts with M &Ms, Fuentebella said Krispy Kreme Doughnuts is intent on sharing "the delectable Krispy Kreme experiences across the nation".
He said Krispy Kreme Doughnuts is set to open its 25th and 26th branch in Cebu City –at the Cebu Information Technology Park and the Ayala Mall - in October and further down south to Davao by early 2011.
Fuentebella said Krispy Kreme Doughnuts is hoping to open at least up to five branches annually.
"We just have to find the right place or location. People would often ask, when are you going to open here or there. It’s just finding the right timing and finding the right location," he said.
Fuentebella said they are also set to come up with new flavors, citing that they usually add a new one every two months.
He said they are also open to design or customize any doughnut according to a customer’s desire.
"There’s no reason not to try it. If you want it, we can try to make it and come up with a specialized doughnut. You want more glaze, or more sprinkles or something else, tell us and we’ll try to do it. Our goal is to ensure customer satisfaction," he added.

eflex September 9th, 2011, 05:45 AM Davao City country’s sole presenter in China’s travel confab

Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte yesterday said that the Department of Tourism has tapped Davao City as the only city in the country to present its products before Chinese potential buyers in the recently concluded Philippine
Travel Conference in Beijing, People's Republic of China.
"I am happy and grateful with the Department of Tourism has tapped the city to be the only presenter in the recent Chinese Incentive Business Travel and Meetings (CIBTM)", Duterte said.
Mayor Duterte said that the Department of Tourism (DOT) has organized Philippine Travel Conference in Beijing, China and it tapped Davao City as the only city to present before Chinese businessmen.
Duterte expressed confidence that the recently concluded Travel Expo would translate into more investments for the city. "This would also be an opportunity for the DOT to know that there can be a possible market for Davao City, an added destination like the country's Boracay and Cebu", Duterte said.
"Last weekend, there were about 132 buyers from China who arrived in our city whom we first met at the Philippine Travel Mart in Beijing, China", Duterte said.
It was unfortunate though according to the mayor that there was an apparent lack of suppliers who joined the city for that conference. Davao's suppliers were given the opportunity to present their products to Chinese buyers. Among them, she said, were Pearl Farm, Eden Resort, Ritz Hotel, Marco Polo, and the Davao City Convention Center.
Duterte said that DOT is pointing the market towards Davao City as a tourism destination. "We have same direction with the DOT. There is an effort by both the DOT and our local government and we synergize to make our city a tourist destination in the country. roldan g. gorgonio

USEP is a chartered University...much like the University of the Philippines. meaning The congress of the philippines enacted a law creating the University of South Eastern Philippines. it is formerly called Davao Trade school. mas mataas pa sa CHED ang nagsabing University yan... CHED has to follow....

Minor correction lang, sir. AIG was never part of Lehman Brothers. The former may have owed Lehman Brothers money for some CDOs insured but that would have been the extent of their relationship.

Jude - Yup. I remember 3 years ago I took a business trip to Asia which included the Philippines with one of my American associates. This was my officemate's first visit ever to Asia much less the Philippines. We stayed in one of the Best Westerns on Makati Avenue. We arrived in Manila from Hong Kong at night and when he woke up the following morning he took his camera out to take pictures from his room on the 20th floor. He was amazed at all the red roofs. Hahaha. I had to tell him that they were not really painted red but rust...
BTW, of course we took a detour to Davao during the weekend we were in the RP and he totally loved Davao...amazed him by having breakfast on an island by the beach then lunch in the mountains and then having a really good French dinner downtown....all in one day. He couldn't understand why I was "slaving away" in the US...

One weekend in Davao City was filled with exciting discoveries. That was a weekend of gastronomic affair with the opening of the new Café Marco in my favourite Marco Polo Davao, and one night of glitz and glamour from Davao’s social scene at the Mindanao launch of Havaianas’ Black Velvet Party.
First party was the formal opening of Marco Polo Davao’s buffet restaurant – the new Café Marco. Known for the city’s longest buffet, Café Marco now features contemporary interiors with gleaming silver accents, oval droplights and walnut columns. The cool ambience is also highlighted by the natural, earth color palettes of the tables and chairs, bringing a whole new dining experience for both the young and the young at heart. Another feature of the newly-refurbished Café Marco is its interactive show kitchen, which allows personalized interface between chefs and guests.
The grand re-opening of the new Café Marco in July marked a momentous occasion for Davao’s premiere luxury hotel. Marco Polo F&B director Bernard Bulaong said executive chef Ed Tuazon will be introducing an exciting array of buffet choices featuring the best of Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Mexican and Filipino cuisines.
After an unforgettable gourmand night, the Manila group of media was invited to the exclusive Havaianas’ Black Velvet Party to launch the 2011 Havaianas Embellished Collection at Marco Polo Davao’s Jade Ballroom. The red carpet affair was attended by Davao’s partyphiles and scions of Mindanao’s renowned clans. The new Havaianas collection puts an elegant twist on the classic rubber flip-flops as they are accentuated with baubles, crystals and Swarovski elements perfect for the stylish and sophisticated flip-flop users.
This city never fails to amaze me. Whether it’s about food, fashion, luxury living or even nature-tripping, Davao City is definitely the place to be!

you can complain to ched that the university of southern philippines (usp) is not the same as university of south eastern philippines (usep). and thats precisely the reason why your school added the word eastern because it is already known that their is a university of southern philippines in cebu:cheers:

Mind you this University back then was just known as Trade school of Davao before it became The University of Southeastern Philippines but was using the acronym USP.Needless to say they have to change the acronym to USEP to give it distinction from other state operated schools in the country.
davaobred September 11th, 2011, 10:59 AM you can complain to ched that the university of southern philippines (usp) is not the same as university of south eastern philippines (usep). and thats precisely the reason why your school added the word eastern because it is already known that their is a university of southern philippines in cebu:cheers:
In the end the logical southern niversity is USEP in Davao because Davao is the true south..I don't know why Cebu is referred to as the a city in the South when in fact it's in the middle..So kung meron man dapat mg complain sa CHED at ichange ang name cguro USP Cebu yon..dapat UCP Cebu yan...
