shanswizard September 21st, 2011, 11:15 PM I really love the fact that the "philippine eagle" was chosen as the new face of Davao.
Hopefully, many more tourists will visit the Philippine Eagle center and contribute in their little ways in the preservation of the majestic yet endangered Eagle!!

rodincouch September 22nd, 2011, 12:35 AM SMB Finance Forum 2011 (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/lifestyle/2011/09/21/smb-finance-forum-2011-180579)
Wednesday, September 21, 2011
LED by the dynamic San Miguel Brewery, Inc. (SMB) chief finance officer Mercy Marie L. Amador and national finance manager Feliciano M. Madlansacay, 72 finance managers, supervisors and senior financial analysts gathered for the Finance Forum 2011 held at Waterfront Insular Hotel in Davao City, with no less than the company president, Roberto N. Huang as guest of honor.
With the theme: "Raising the Bar for Excellence," the national gathering was highlighted with the cascading of SMB's Finance Strategy Map, Core Values and Teambuilding Activities, which emphasized on synchronization.
As a reinforcement of the Core Values, each finance area presented a short video on a specific value.
The videos did not just express fresh insights and value manifestations but also showed the rich creativity and talent of the Finance People in coming up with their presentations.
Deserving awards went to the following areas: South Luzon Area (SLA) under SCFO Ariel D. Anciano, for best video presentation; Central North Luzon Area (CNLA) under SCFO Libay B. Sebastian and Mandaue under SCFO Raymund H. Patalinghug as 1st and 2nd runners up, respectively.
The fellowship night also revealed the talent that Finance never runs short.
The Finance Got Talent! even proved that their knack for performing is getting bigger and better.
Once again, CNLA emerged champion for the 3rd time; hence, earning the Hall of Fame title.
Meanwhile, Mindanao's "Showtime" came out 1st runner-up to CNLA's Interpretative Dance. RNH made the night more exciting by giving away bigger cash prizes, Samsung Galaxy Tabs and Ipad 2.
Of course, the delegates did not pass up the chance to visit some of Davao City's pride like Eden Mountain Resort, Malagos Garden, Philippine Eagle and Pearl Farm and brought home with them the city's signature pasalubongs like pomelos and durian candies.
The gathering every two years is indeed a worthwhile avenue for sharing, learning and fun! Congratulations to this year's host -- Team Mindanao.

windlady September 22nd, 2011, 03:00 PM SM Investments raises P5B to build sports arena, Davao hotel
SM Investments Corp. (SMIC)said Thursday it was able to raise P5 billion by floating seven- and 10-year fixed rate corporate notes.
The money will finance SMIC’s property projects, including the Mall of Asia’s SM Arena and a 200-room hotel in Davao City.
“This Notes issuance is indeed a clear indication of the financing community’s trust and confidence in the SM group," SMIC president Harley Sy said in a statement.
SMIC chief finance officer Jose T. Sio added that they “are pleased with the continued vote of confidence of the institutional investors who subscribed to the Notes issue."
BDO Capital and Investment Corp., First Metro Investment Corp. and The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corp. Ltd. were the joint lead arrangers and bookrunners of the issue.
The seven-year notes have a yield of 5.750% while 6.625% is the rate for the 10-year issue.
16,000-seater sports center
SMIC vice president for investor relations Corazon Guidote told GMA News Online that part of the notes proceeds will be used to complete the 16,000-seater SM Arena in Pasay City by the second quarter of 2012.
The sports complex has gross floor area of 62,000 square meters and seven levels of basement parking, and an adjacent car park building. Total vehicle parking capacity is at 1,490.
Provisions for retail and office spaces are part of the project.
Davao budget hotel
SM Hotel and Conventions Corp. is building the P750-million, 204-room Park Inn by Radisson Davao, which is programmed to open in 2013.The ‘mid-market’ hotel will be built in Davao City’s Lanang district. It will bring to 1,018 the number of rooms SM Hotels will have in its portfolio.
“Davao is an ideal location for such an undertaking because of its robust economy, vibrant population, and excellent infrastructure including its international airport," according to SM Hotels and Conventions president Elizabeth T. Sy.
SMIC’s other hotel projects are Taal Vista, Radisson Blu, and Pico Sands. — VS, GMA News

Board okay’s Herhof’s waste-to-energy bid
THE SOLID Waste Management Board favored the $1.2 billion waste-to-energy facility proposed by Germany-based Herhof, a subsidiary of the Greek waste management company Helector S.A, that will be built at no cost to the city.Joseph Dominic Felizarta, officer-in-charge of City Environment and Natural Resources Office, said yesterday at the city council that the proposal of Davao Waste-to-Energy Corp. and Singaporean firm Sinova Holdings Ltd. was denied as it would still leave behind 10 percent of the residuals in the sanitary landfill.
The board favored the project of Herhof (not Herr Hof as earlier reported) because it promises zero waste while collecting 500 to 1,000 metric tons of garbage each day.
“But although it encourages to produce more wastes, the segregation policy should still be observed. The planned project would not create an impact on the implementation of solid waste management ordinance of the city,” he said.
Based on Herhof’s proposal, the city will get two percent share on net income after tax from plants revenues.
He said they can collect more from the industrial and commercial establishments in far-flung areas. At present, the office collects 359 tons per day from around 700 tons prior to the strict implementation of the ordinance.
He added that the proposed facility could help extend the lifespan of the sanitary landfill which is expected to last up to 10 years. The firm proposed to build both a stabilat plant and a power plant that could generate up to 12 megawatts.
The German company has partnered with Integrated Group-Green Technology Mindanao. The proposal was also favored by the city council’s committee on environment and natural resources. It is among the items under second reading during yesterday’s session.
The board, however, denied the application of another potential investor of waste-to-energy facility.
Felizarta said the proposal of Davao Waste-to-Energy Corp. and Singaporean firm Sinova Holdings Ltd. was denied as it would still leave behind 10 percent of the residuals in the sanitary landfill. The company also proposed to collect 1,000 metric tons per day.
A report from the City Legal Office stated that Sinova would also violate the revenue code as the firm will charge disposal fee on a per metric ton basis in an amount agreed upon from the commercial and industrial customers for processing the solid wastes.
“The imposition of these fees, however, is contrary to Sec. 274 of the Code which provides that the city will only collect an amount as special garbage collection fee for the removal of large and usual quantities of garbage,” the report cited.

BY MAYA M. PADILLO
An official of Southeast Asian Airlines (SEAIR) said the city government and the private sector should act in a unified manner in order to position Davao City as a tourist hub.
SEAIR OIC for commercial affairs Delza Gochoco in an interview said Davaoeńos should not bank on the Department of Tourism (DOT) in promoting the city.
“DOT has no money. It should be concerted efforts between the businessmen, LGU, and even the press. (Regional tourism director) Art Boncato is doing quite well. There is just a lull in between,” Gochoco said.
Gochoco said there is so much to see in Davao City but the awareness is not yet there. It just a matter of telling everyone that Davao City is ready for business, she said.
Gochoco said SEAIR is aggressively promoting Davao City to fill up the seats of Tiger Airways of Singapore, which will have its first Singapore-Davao-Singapore flight on November 1.
Tiger Airways will fly three times a week, but Gochoco is hopeful they will offer daily flights in the future.
“There is a market here and we’re jumping on it. If we can fill it up three times a week, tourism will flourish here,” Gochoco said.
She said they will also introduce the newest airline in Tagum City, General Santos City, Mati, and Cotabato City.

rodincouch September 23rd, 2011, 12:08 PM City unveils new brand ‘Life is here’ (http://www.dailymirror.ph/Sept-2011/Sept222010/front1.html)
BY DIANA LHYD SUELTO
“Life is here.”
The city government yesterday launched the three-word tagline along with a lumad headdress-clad Philippine Eagle for a mascot during the unveiling of the new Davao City branding yesterday.
In her opening remarks, Mayor Sara Duterte said the city will promote the things Davaoeńos have taken for granted, like the city’s abundance of fresh fruits, natural resources, and adventure destinations.
Bai Manginsay, the city’s branding consultant, said the Davao City brand is all about what life is in Davao City.
“The big idea is to promote Mother Nature,” he said.
He said this is also why the logo of the city’s branding is predominantly green, the color of nature.
“It is green because we cannot change the trees into brown,” Manginsay said.
The city’s identifier, which is the Philippine Eagle, “epitomizes the city’s characteristics – strength, agility and power,” he added.
After the unveiling, the city’s national promotion will kick-start with new print and television advertisements.
The city will pour in the remainder of its P4 million budget for the national promotion of Davao City.
The city hopes to target young professionals who want to visit, retirees who want to relocate, business investors who want to invest, and Overseas Filipino Workers.
The other target of the city is MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions).
City Tourism Office head Jason Maganaye urged tour operators and other business establishments to put the Davao logo in their promotion materials and help promote the city.
He also urged hotels and resorts to include the logo in their letterheads and calling cards.

yes and these decisions and investments are the kinds that discerning Dabawenyos should be vigilant about where the impact on the unique and priceless Davao Environment that those with awareness and concern steward and interests of general consumers esp. pertaining to sustainable and promising power needs are put in primary consideration, not the blatant profiteering agenda esp. by those that attempt to monopolize (read: Oligarchs esp. under this administration with their puppet in position) such basic services as power needs when in fact diverse and more sustainable renewable energy sources are available with a technology trending for the future :okay: rather than depleting, polluting fossil fuel sources as coal that's expected to cost more and more expensively  :ohno:

i think the most important benefit the city can get from the project is the prolonging of the lifespan of sanitary landfill than just the 12 mw of power it can recycle. sanitary landfill is costly to build. and i dont think davao city is prepared to embark on another one after its lifespan of about ?8-10 years.

Friday, September 23, 2011
DAVAO City will host the BIMP-Eaga Games Marathon set sometime in December to kick-off the bi-ennial meet slated next year.
Philippine Sports Commissioner Chito Loyzaga said the marathon will be participated by member countries Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. The latter will be represented by Mindanao runners.
"It's a good thing that you have a series of fun runs going on here every weekend. That will also boost chances of your competitors in the Games' marathon. We will also include a fun run as side event so our local `kababayans' can also join," Loyzaga said during the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn on Thursday.
Loyzaga also said the PSC is taking necessary steps to prepare for the country's hosting of the Games. He arrived Thursday to check on the progress of the sports complex being built in Davao del Sur that could also be a possible venue for the goodwill games.
PSC chair Richie Garcia in February this year paid Mayor Inday Sara Duterte a courtesy call and offered her the hosting of the BIMP Eaga Games Marathon. Garcia assured Duterte that PSC will shoulder costs of the event.
PSC has its hands full before the year ends. Aside from the marathon, the country's sports agency is also working hand in hand with the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) for the revival of the Philippine National Youth Games (PNYG) Batang Pinoy Championship finals on December 10-13 in Naga City.
A series of regional qualifying legs will be held in key cities before the nationals take place. Zamboanga City will host the Mindanao qualifying set on October 27 to 30.
PSC along with the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) are also spearheading the country's preparations for the overseeing the preparations for the 26th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games scheduled on November 11 to 22 in Indonesia.
Loyzaga also said they will work with DepEd for the 2012 Palarong Pambansa.
"We will provide technical assistance to DepEd through the NSAs. We will also help them use their money properly," Loyzaga said. (MLSA)

eflex September 24th, 2011, 05:00 AM Herhof project to bring P107-M in taxes, savings
| More |
By Jereco O. Paloma
Friday, September 23, 2011
THE proposed $1 billion waste-to-energy project of Herhof of Germany can bring in at least P107 million in terms of tax revenues and savings for the Davao City Government per year once approved, said an official Friday.
This is because of the P87 million tax revenue the project will be paying and P20 million that the city might be saving in keeping the P300-million sanitary landfill in New Carmen, Tugbok district that has been idle for years, said lawyer Joseph Dominic Felizarta, chief of the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro).
Have something to report? Tell us in text, photos or videos.
Felizarta said the revenues that can be generated are exclusive of the proposed two percent share the City might get out in varied forms of end products that the facility will be producing.
He said if the project will push through, the life span of the city's landfill will be prolonged for decades and the city will be saving millions from it.
Among these products that the facility are capable of producing are soft and hard pellets, which can be sold to various coal-fired facilities and carbon credits, which according to Felizarta will be sold to Europe.
Felizarta said, however, that he is not certain how much the city might generate out of the two percent share.
"Pero sa estimate pa lang nila ug sa two percent na share, dako jud ang ma benefit sa city diri (Based on their estimate, and the proposed two percent share, it is certain that the city can benefit really out of this project)," Felizarta said.
He said the project is really worthy of consideration since apart from the partnership being mutually beneficial; the City will not spend any fund for it.
The only share of the city will be the area where the facility will be built.
Based on the draft of the contract, Felizarta said, the city will give Herhof 50 years for the project which is subject for renewal depending on the discretion of the City Government.
If the City Council will issue the ordinance that will authorize Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte to enter into contract with Herhof, Felizarta said the entire construction of the facility will take at least five years.

interesting and promising development on RE.
the city should encourage more of these new and revolutionary RE technologies like from the German investor and invite more promising foreign investments on RE rather than allow itself to be unwittingly manipulated by Oligarchic agenda esp. in this present administration that ulteriorly attempts to monopolize Davao and Mindanao's energy needs planning to profiteer and saturate it with jejemon coal plants even at the expense of general consumer's interest and of the Environment, where time had proven such selfish Oligarchic manipulation and grip of its economy is the man root of the the country's hardships and why the country had become the least preferred among its Asian neighbors to invest as perceived by much needed foreign investors especially on RE.

Davao City set to launch its new tourism brand
http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=1&t=1&id=54387
by Mai Gevera-Macapagat
DAVAO CITY Sept. 15 (PIA) -- Davao City is set to launch its tourism brand and logo on September 21 at Grand Men Seng Hotel after it got a positive feedback from Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez.
City Tourism Officer Jason Magnaye announced during the weekly forum, I-Speak, that the tourism secretary who is also a brand expert found the Davao brand and logo neat and even competitive.
Magnaye said the brand and logo are produced by a team composed of the City Tourism Office, City Information Office, and City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.
“We are keeping the design and other details until September 21 to keep the thrill. But just to talk a little about it, the brand talks about how Davao life is,” he added.
During the brand launch, the unveiling of the new brochure, television commercials, and the new tourism website was also conducted.
The city tourism got media attention after it launched its Davao Punch campaign at the height of the Kadayawan Festival last month.
Magnaye said there are plans of bottling and packaging the popular Davao Punch concoction to further tap the international and domestic market and to establish it as a prime Davao product.
The tourism office is coordinating with the Department of Science and Technology, some food processors, and the Center for Asian Culinary Studies on how to realize this plan.
The official considers the Davao Punch campaign as effective and he hopes to get a similar feedback with the soon to be launched Davao brand and logo. (MGM/PIA XI/Mai Gevera-Macapagat)
Davao’s new tag line: “Davao. Life is Here.”
http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=1&t=1&id=55405
by Mai Gevera-Macapagat
DAVAO CITY, Sept. 21 (PIA) – “Davao. Life is here.”
This is the new tagline launched earlier by the city government of Davao led by Mayor Sara Duterte with guests from the tourism and business sectors as well as the media.
It is part of the new brand divulged to the public as the city government makes a boost in its tourism sector aiming to receive more tourists and investors in the coming months.
Brand expert Rey “Bai” Manginsay packaged the entire branding about life in Davao, the things non-Dabawenyos long for, while some Dabawenyos take for granted.
From the adventure hike to Mt. Apo, to the heavenly taste of the Durian fruit, to the juicy bite of Davao Pomelo, all these are but some of the reasons why many tourists long to visit the city.
“We see these things everyday and sometimes taken for granted but for our market, for those who do not live here, these are the reasons why they come to Davao,” Duterte said.
The mayor describes the entire branding as something that each Dabawenyo will take part on, something they will own.
The brand maker “Bai” divulged how it took him ten years to understand Davao life and appreciate it. He chose the Philippine monkey-eating eagle as the brand identifier.
“The eagle is a very strong image because it is unique and we own it. Its kingdom is in Mt. Apo, another tourist destination of the city. It symbolizes power and unity,” he said.
Mayor Duterte appreciated the use of the eagle as the defining image of the city since the Philippine eagle is uniquely Davao. The image shown in promotional materials is an eagle wearing tribal accessories which depict the multi-cultural set-up in the city.
The city government is yet to release other promotional materials in the coming months. However, ready for publication and for airing are the television commercial, the materials for print ads, the new brochure, and the website.
Duterte and her team urged Dabawenyos to embrace this new branding by using the logo in their letterheads, buses, and all other avenues where this may be known and exposed to the public.
“With this strategy, we also expect more tourists and investors to come visit our city,” she said. (CLC/MGM/PIA-11)

City unveils new brand
‘Life is here’
BY DIANA LHYD SUELTO

Very nice! Khit ako not familiar with some of the places there. DOT is promoting Davao as an ecotourism hotspot, kaya wala masyado about the city. Maganda to, people go to davao to see the mountains and the beaches and they will be surprised that such wonders are just within reach from a highly cosmopolitan city!

Good.... from what I see on those pics of our flyovers is that it is wide with 4 lanes, it looks durable, it looks safe, it doesn't look like a hump for a motorcross race (probably because its length is long enough), more importantly it has lights installed.
If our LGU will build another flyovers in the city as what rumors are suggesting, I hope it will be like the ones we already have or better.

Laak horses: From fights to fashion
By Frinston Lim
Philippine Daily Inquirer (http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/64517/laak-horses-from-fights-to-fashion)
9:37 pm | Saturday, September 24th, 2011
LAAK, Compostela Valley—Reputations were at stake when horses paraded in this town dressed in their best costumes for the ninth Kahimunan Festival.
Previous festivals had brought them center stage undressed as warriors ready to fight for their lives in bloody horse fights that officials decided to put a stop to.
It was a welcome change in reputation, however, as the town continued its tradition of honoring the animal that has given its farmers immeasurable help in their good harvests and for which the horse was bestowed the title “king of the road.”
Horses again took center stage last Wednesday, but not as the fierce warriors previous fights turned them into. This time, they were dressed like the kings that farmers considered them to be.
“It’s basically a celebration of bountiful harvest and the strong bond between the original lumad residents and the settlers with horses as common element in their cultures,” Mayor Reynaldo Navarro said.
Most of the town’s 40 barangays are difficult to reach by jeeps or tricycles and it is the reason why horses are the main mode of transportation for most residents, he said.
“So they thought of honoring the horses through a ‘horse fashion show,’” said the mayor.
Each village fielded an entry. “The more colorful the costume and the more indigenous the materials used, the more edge in winning,” said Janice Ollave, town information officer.
The pageant was also the town’s way of putting a stop to horse fights, which had been part of tribal tradition. “As far as tribal tradition is concerned, horse-fighting is popular,” she said.
But Ollave said protests against the brutality of the event prompted feast organizers this year not to hold it.
More than just honoring tradition, the best dressed horse contest was also Laak’s way of immortalizing the use of horses as a mode of transportation, which is disappearing because of new roads and motorcycles, officials said.
Fernando Briones, village chief of Kilagding, said the advent of motorcycles “marginalized” the use of horses. Briones, whose community is some 13 kilometers from the town center, said horse-riding has been, and would be, both a tradition and a necessity. “Motorcycles could crash, horses do not,” he said.
“Horse-fighting was a sure crowd-drawer but we could stage a less deplorable event in the horse costume contest. We chose to stage the latter,” Mayor Navarro added.
The winner in the costume contest was a horse with a reputation for being a demon in previous fights. Its name is Korekek and it carries a fight record of seven wins, one loss and one draw.
This time, Korekek wasn’t draped in blood, but in a red cape carrying baskets of fruits that are the town’s forest bounty. Its being a demon in horse fights wasn’t noticeable when it paraded to win the best dressed contest.
Korekek, used to winning prizes for its owners in fights, didn’t disappoint despite not having to gnaw, kick and bloody its way to fame. It won P2,000 for its owner in the costume contest and started a major paradigm shift in a town that used to cheer bloodied horses.

SM eyes largest convention facility in Davao
By RG Alama
Philippine Information Agency (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=7&r=r11&id=56328)
Monday, September 26, 2011
DAVAO CITY, Sept 27 -- Despite being a highly-urbanized city, Davao currently lacks a large convention center which can accommodate 3,000 to 5,000 people.
However that problem will be a thing of the past as SM is set to open SMX in Davao City in its mall development located in Lanang district this 2012.
The SMX Davao Convention Center is expected to accommodate 5,000 plus people and can be divided into three halls that can accommodate 700 to 1,800 people. It has a leasable area of about 5,400 square meters.
According to SM Hotels and Conventions Corporation Vice President for sales and marketing Lourdes Macalindong, the facility aims to boost local tourism as it can attract large conventions and exhibitions.
The City has been unable to snatch the hosting of premiere conventions and other large events like the much-coveted Ad Congress because of the lack of a sufficient convention facility in the City.
Jason Magnaye, chief of the Davao City and investment Promotions Center and the City Tourism Operations Office says that they will be promoting these convention facilities as the city sets to woo the Meetings Incentives Conventions and Exhibit (MICE) market.
He bared that another development, the Davao International Exhibition and Convention Center is also being constructed also in Lanang. The facility can accommodate 3,000 to 4,000 people.
Magnaye said that the two convention centers will be open by the time the City hosts MICE convention in March 2013.
The SMX is touted to become a one-stop convention complex with a nearby hotel being put up in the area. The 204-room Park Inn Hotel under the Raddisson brand aims to complement the SMX and will be connected by a series of foot bridges. The P800-million hotel the first of its brand in Southeast Asia is expected to open by 2013. (PIA/RG Alama)

City might close landfill in 2016
By Jereco O. Paloma
Sun.Star Davao (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/local-news/2011/09/26/city-might-close-landfill-2016-181499)
Monday, September 26, 2011
SHOULD the Davao City Government pushes through with its planned US$ 1.2-billion worth of waste-to-energy this year, the city's sanitary land fill might be closed by 2016, an environment official said.
Lawyer Joseph Dominic Felizarta, City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro) chief, said the closure will be for the better since the city will save at least P20 million in keeping the sanitary landfill idle for years.
Felizarta told Sun.Star Friday the waste-to-energy facility to be built by German firm, Herhof, is set to be completed within five years.
"Kung naa na ning facility sa Herhof, dako jud kaayo ang ma save sa city (The city will be saving a lot with the Herhof facility)," Felizarta said.
Felizarta said as soon as the facility becomes operational, the city will be using it as an eco-park and a decomposing site.
He said without the waste-to-energy facility, the lifespan of the city's landfill will be at least 15 years. The facility will extend the lifespan of the landfill by decades.
Felizarta said the city spent approximately P300 million for the landfill. He said the city will not spend anything on the Herhof project.
The project is also expected to bring in at least P107 million in terms of tax revenues and savings.
He said that for tax revenues alone, the facility will probably be paying at least P87 million if the city will be producing 500 tons of garbage per day.
Based on the proposed contract between Herhof and the City Government, the city must comply with the minimum requirement of 500-1000 tons per day.

Sports Fashion Brand Uses Philippines as Jump-off Point for SEA
first in Southeast Asia
Manila Bulletin (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/335630/sports-fashion-brand-uses-philippines-jumpoff-point-sea)
September 26, 2011, 3:29am
MANILA, Philippines — In an aggressive move to dominate the global market, Italian sportswear brand Ellese has teamed up with the Primer Group of Companies to steer its entry into leading countries in the Southeast Asian region.
“We are very committed to a strategy whereby we have set up offices in the Americas, Europe, and Asia,” says Ellesse Global Managing Director Mike Stropworth. “We have invested in a Hong Kong-based team, and have a strong presence in Japan and South Korea, and will launch in China next year. (Southeast Asia market) is controlled out of Manila through Primer.”
Available in 54 different countries, Ellesse’s recent partnership with the local retail distributor makes the brand available in the Philippines for the first time. Stores are opening locally this year, while shops in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Taiwan will open within the next two years.
Rich heritage
Founded in Italy in 1959 by Mr. Leonardo Servadio, noted Italian sportswear brand Ellesse, has been providing premium apparel and footwear to recreational and professional athletes alike for over 50 years. Named after the founder’s initials, “L” / “S”, Ellesse is known worldwide as an authentic Italian sportswear brand with rich sporting heritage, specifically in ski and tennis. Over the years, the likes of Boris Becker, Chris Evert, Guillermo Vilas, Marc Girardelli, Jean-Luc Cretier, Muhammad Ali, Maurice Cheeks and Brigitte Nielsen have all been associated with the brand.
“Ellesse is based on the notion of style infused into sportswear,” explains Stopworth. “Ellesse creates high quality products you can wear both on and off the court…the brand is the essence of Italian style. Many of the other sportswear providers focus on the harder side of sports…winning and getting sweaty, while we’re focused on looking good while playing…equally on the styling of the product as the function.”
Being such, Ellesse’s target market are individuals between the ages of 20 to 30 years old. “The brand appeals equally to both males and females. Targets are fresh grads who take pride in what they wear and want to look good even when they exercise—recreational athletes. We target the upper-middle-class as we provide a high quality, premium product that’s still accessible and affordable—and in no way do our products limit performance.”
Hello, Asia
The foray into Asia was a natural progression of the brand’s business model’s evolution, from subsidiary and distribution, to licensing.
“Asia has always been a big part of our long term strategy,” shares Stopworth. The Philippines, particularly, bodes well as a jump off point for the brand’s entry into Asia. “The brand is right for the Philippines…This is an exciting market with a good mix of designer stores you’ll find in any country, right down to local retailers.”
Unlike other big name brands,
Ellesse opened its first free-standing store in Southeast Asia not in Metro Manila, but in Davao City. The second one will rise in Alabang by end-2011, and the third in Fort Bonifacio by the first quarter of 2012.
“The plans are to have nine freestanding store open nationwide in the Philippines within the next two years,” Stopworth reveals. “Stores will be stylized. It will not be overtly Italian with flags hanging everywhere though when you enter, it will be distinctly Italian. It will exude class and quality. Stores will be slick and polished. Shoppers will have a premium shopping experience in a sports boutique, as opposed to a sports store.”
Ellesse is exclusively distributed by the Primer Group of Companies. For additional information, please visit: www.primergrp.com.

Tuesday, September 27, 2011
THE Department of Education (DepEd) Division office on Palma Gil Street, beside People's Park, will be moving out to a new home to give way to the "Pasalubong Center" that Mayor Sara Z. Duterte has been yearning for.
The "Pasalubong Center" is one of the four things that have not been accomplished by the City Government, which Duterte referred to as "bad news" in her State of the City Address (Soca) last week.
Have something to report? Tell us in text, photos or videos.
Now that the four-storey building provided for by the City Government is ready for the Division office's transfer, the renovation of the "Pasalubong Center" is underway.
"Property man na siya sa city, mao ng kinahanglan ibalik na siya sa city (That is a city property that's why it needs to be returned to the city)," Duterte said during her regular press conference at the City Hall Monday.
The center's products will include souvenir items that will be made by a women's group, joined by different sectors in a consortium of cooperatives.
"I-rehabilitate na siya for the Pasalubong Center and sa plano, naa pud coffee shop na i-operate sa mga women (It will be rehabilitated and in the plan, there will be a coffee shop to be operated by a women's group)," Duterte said.
City Tourism and Investment and Promotion officer Jason Magnaye will be in charge of the operations, while the City Engineers Office will be tasked for the rehabilitation.
"Magtransfer na kami sa September 28, it is a four-storey building. Mas malaki ang aming lugar doon (We will be transferring on September 28. It is more spacious there)," said Eva Antipuesto, administrative officer of DepEd-Davao Region.
She added they would like the transfer to happen on September 28.
"But we will still be here in the morning of the 28th, there will be a blessing of the building though there is no lavish preparation," Antipuesto said in the vernacular. (CHB)

Davao reports 17.8% hike in tax take
DAVAO CITY -- The City Treasurer’s Office has reported about P1.09 billion in tax collections in the first half,
an increase of about 17.8% from the P925 million netted in the same period last year,
the local chief executive said in a statement on Monday.
Business taxes made up half, at P552.8 million, of the total collection for those six months.
Mayor Sara Z. Duterte-Carpio attributed the increase to the one-stop shop of the local government cutting down red tape.
Outlets of the facility had been established in shopping malls and other strategically located public places.
“As a result, the number of business establishments [paying taxes] significantly increased by 24% or 30,000 from last year to 36,000 this year,”
she said.
Internal revenue allotment -- the city’s share in national government tax collections -- still make up 60% of total local revenues,
but the city government aims to trim this down to 30% by addressing leakages and updating valuations for property taxes,
the statement added. -- J. B. Escovilla

SM convention center to bid for 2013 MICE event
SM Hotels and Conventions Corp. will bid to become the venue for the 2013 Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Events (MICE) conference that would be held in the city after besting Camarines Sur.
Macalindong said the company would also build the country’s first Park Inn Hotel by Radisson worth P800-million within the mixed-used complex in SM Lanang. Its groundbreaking ceremony would be conducted by next month, she added.
“It is a hip and trendy hotel yet still affordable for the consumers. We are truly making luxury affordable,” she said, adding that its main target market are the young professionals. It would be designed especially with vibrant colors, she said.
The Park Inn Hotel is the newest project of SM Hotels and Convention Center. The planned hotel is an eight-storey building with 204 guestrooms. It will have a lobby lounge, all-day food outlet with outdoor seating, four meeting rooms, fitness center and swimming pool.
A bridge will also be constructed to connect the hotel to the firm’s mall.(WITH REPORTS BY JOEL ESCOVILLA)

By RG Alama

Lat cited that favored Filipino films in the European festivals included films made in Davao and Mindanao.

Maria, even Saranggani with its enigmatic thousands-year old discovery of unique, anthropomorphic artifacts of human clay figures that will rewrite this country's history towards this part of Mindanao, the Davao Gulf. So it's not just for tourism, but educational as well with more people, locals and visitors alike, rediscovering the treasures of Davao Gulf.

Davao’s ‘pasalubong’ center promotes ‘Green’ business
By PNA and U.S. News Agency / Asian
US News Los Angeles (http://usnewslasvegas.asia/phl-regions/davaos-pasalubong-center-promotes-green-business/)
WEDNESDAY, 28 SEPTEMBER 2011
The newly-installed “pasalubong” center project of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Department of Tourism (DOT) here is an avenue to further promote ‘green’ business in the Davao Region.
DTI Regional Director Marizon S. Loreto said the Davao Ecocrafts store is the Tindahang Pinoy brand of Davao. It is a ‘pasalubong’ center that showcases Davao Region’s authentic, sustainable products ranging from processed foods, gift items and stationeries, fashion accessories, furnishings and home decors, furniture, to other items typically found in a souvenir shop. It is being managed by the Davao Ecocrafts, Incorporated.
Loreto said the use of sustainable raw materials will ensure that such are sourced out locally thus, giving opportunities to the producers to promote ‘green’ business.
She said this collaborative effort also involves an accreditation program of the DOT in terms of customer service and visual merchandising standards.
Loreto also assured that in buying ‘pasalubong’ items and other products at the Davao Ecocrafts, the buyers are assured of quality.
“The rare find of valuable pieces of art at the shop is really meant to cater to the discriminating standards of local and foreign buyers while providing the total tourist experience and satisfaction among visitors and tourists of the city and the region,” she said.
Moreover, Loreto said the promotion of ‘green’ business is one of the major requirements before a certain product gets the chance to be part of the store’s showcase.
“In the world market, going green has been the rule of thumb. In fact, the organic products from the region, like the coconut sugar, are a big hit in the international trading arena. In the local scene, people prefer organic products as well because of the growing awareness towards healthy lifestyle,” she said.
While there are many pasalubong centers in the region, DTI and DOT have to develop the standards to maintain the quality of our products, she added.

lakawero September 29th, 2011, 07:18 AM DILG Region XI conducts DILG-CSO-LGU Partnership Workshop
http://www.dilg.gov.ph/news.php?id=234&newsCategory=Regional
September 29, 2011
Davao City – Ninety-one local government officials and functionaries and representatives from different sectors converged here recently to attend the first ever DILG-CSO-LGU Partnership Workshop for Transparent, Accountable and Good Local Governance in Davao Region at the Royal Mandaya Hotel, J. Palma Street, Davao City.
The activity, which was graced by top officials from the Department led by Undersecretary for Local Government Austere Panadero and Assistant Secretary for Administration and External Relations Eubert Gutierrez, is in support to the national government’s thrust of linking with CSOs as partners-stakeholders to realize the purpose of transparency and accountability in all levels of governance both in the national and local governments.
Regional Director Ananias Villacorta said the general objective of the workshop is to harmonize the works and enhance the partnership among stakeholders, DILG-CSOs-LGUs, in pursuing the intent of good local governance, thru transparency and accountability in line with the thrust of the present administration.
Villacorta also encouraged all participants to benchmark the contributions of the partnership, in the promotion of a responsible, accountable and transparent local governance in Region XI; identify factors that either reinforce or hinder the maturation of the partnership and determine the areas of strength of the collaboration or engagement that have to be scaled-up and translate these into a mutual Regional Plan of Action.
Two workshops were conducted during the activity namely, the State of Local Participatory Governance, and Next Critical Steps. Among the topics discussed were updates of DILG priority programs, Advocacy on the Puerto Princesa Underground River, Seal Of Good Housekeeping, Utilization of the Performance Challenge Fund Subsidy and Sagana at Ligtas Na Tubig Para sa Lahat Program. Dir. Jesusa I. Rebete of National Anti-Poverty Commission also discussed the Poverty Localization Framework of Region XI so that the LCEs will be updated on their LGU’s status.
For Region XI, initial vital steps have been undertaken with the Memorandum of Agreement signing by no less than DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo and the Mindanao Coalition of Development NGO Networks (MINCODE). So far, the inventory of CSOs/NGOs in the capital towns and cities in the four provinces and one highly-urbanized city under the Davao Region, revealed that there are about 1,000 civil society organizations/non-government organizations legitimately operating in the Region. allenation September 29th, 2011, 11:33 AM German firm to develop Carmen, Lacson landfills
| More |
By Jereco O. Paloma
Wednesday, September 28, 2011
SHOULD the partnership between the City Government and Herhof of Germany forged within this year, the firm will also be developing the city's multi-million sanitary landfill in New Carmen and Lacson.
Councilor Marissa Salvador-Abella, chair of the City Council committee on environment, during her presentation of Herhof's proposed facility, said based on the agreement, one of the best features of the partnership is that the firm will be unearthing all the dumped garbage at the New Carmen and Lacson landfills.
Have something to report? Tell us in text, photos or videos.
"Pag ma sugdan na ang project, i-mine na sa Herhof ang duha ka sites, tanang basura, kaluton nila didto (As soon as the project starts, Herhof will mine the two dumpsites)," Abella said.
Abella said the technology that Herhof is offering can help the City save millions not to mention the taxes that the firm will be paying.
"Imagina sa 50 years na naa sa contract, pila ka landfill ang ma save sa city (Imagine how many landfill the city will be saving within 50 years)," she added.
The city spent at least P300 million (including the construction of roads) for the construction of the sanitary landfill in New Carmen that opened December 2010.
Lawyer Joseph Felizarta, City Environment and Natural Resources chief, said the City Government will be saving P20 million per year in keeping the New Carmen landfill idle for decades.
If the project proposal of the German firm will push through, the City Government will be developing the landfill into an eco-park and a composting site.
During Tuesday's regular session, the City Council has approved on third and final reading an ordinance authorizing Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte to sign for and in behalf of the City Government the memorandum of understanding with the Herhof of Germany for the proposed waste-to-energy facility.

The newest party place in Davao Gulf! Cruising between The Eco.City and The Garden City :cheers2:
kung merong bang bus sa amerika, meron ding tayong bang boat dito sa davao!
Thanini September 29th, 2011, 12:39 PM ^^ maybe more tourism investors can make it more exciting with package eco tours not just in Davao city and Samal Garden City, but with tours around the whole Davao Gulf itself, including Davao Oriental's hundred kms. white sand beaches, dolphin watching, Davao del Sur's Boracay-like Sta.
(just skip the coal plant.)

THE Davao City Council on Tuesday's regular session approved on third and final reading an ordinance authorizing Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte to sign for and in behalf of the City Government the memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Herhof of Germany for the proposed water-to-energy facility.
Councilor Marissa Salvador-Abella, chair of the City Council committee on environment, said the MOU is needed to proceed with further negotiations on the construction of the facility.
Have something to report? Tell us in text, photos or videos.
Based on the approved ordinance, the technology that Herhof is offering to the city will lessen the detrimental effects of released greenhouse gases to the environment and to produce clean energy from waste.
The city will not be spending anything for the establishment of the plant, as the main counterpart of the city will only be the area where the plant will be built.
Abella said the technology that Herhof is offering to the city will be the first of its kind in Southeast Asia.
The MOU states that both parties are open to the idea of Herhof constructing and operating a modern waste-to-energy facility in the city.
Abella said one of the best features of Herhof's technology is that the city will no longer have to pre-sort its garbage before it will be fed into the facility.
Members of the city's lawmaking body have been encouraged by the mayor to go to Germany to personally see the facility but at their own expense.

mabuti at walang Oligarch ang naka-infiltrate dito but a direct deal with the local LGU and the foreign investor. There should be more cleaner, promising RE technologies like these in the Davao area RE should be instrumental in combatting Oligarchic agenda at monopolizing the country's energy demands and profiteering over its burdened consumers, especially Mindanaoans with limited, polluting, fossil fuel based resources expected to skyrocket in prices as it gets depleted through the years. Meanwhile RE technologies will continue to improve better and more efficiently onwards.

Davao is the first city in SOUTHEAST ASIA to use a waste-to-energy facility. Davao is indeed following the development pattern of first world countries, what with 911, high technology traffic and traffic monitoring system, and now this.

eflex October 1st, 2011, 06:45 AM A Saturday burger date with Gino
Written By: JESSE PIZARRO BOGA

Category: Lifestyle News
It’s been a long time since I saw Debbie, a highschool classmate who used to sell sweet munchkin treats in class. For the past few weeks, after finally connecting in Facebook, we’ve been finding a good reason to hang out—but we didn’t know where.
Spending countless hours in Facebook until the wee hours, I finally saw the light: a quaint food place in Lapu-Lapu Street is waiting to be discovered.
I bumped into the Facebook page of Gino’s Burger one late evening. The page has pictures of charcoal-grilled burgers and patties all over the place. They were huge and they looked delicious. I only stared.
There are only a handful of burger joints in the city that can make your mouths water by the mere sight of photos—and you know that a burger is a must-try when a Facebook photo of it can make you hungry even after a decent dinner at home.
And thus, began our burger journey: armed with a strange craving for American burgers and an amazing ability to get lost in the vicinity of Agdao, Debbie and I hopped on a tricycle from Gaisano Mall to hunt for Gino’s Burger.
Finding the place wasn’t as difficult as I expected. Although Gino’s burger doesn’t scream attention from passersby on the street, looking for it wasn’t a chore. It’s located in the Yu Uy Tong building near the corner of Sobrecarey and Lapu-Lapu Street. The place only had a couple of tarpaulins to identify itself; there were plastic chairs and tables, reminiscent of high school cafeteria.
When we found our seats, a sweet lady named Joy approached us and asked for our order. We told her we wanted Gino’s Burger—or whatever their specialty is. Apparently, their whole menu line-up is their specialty. A regular burger starts at 80 a pop; Gino’s has Hawaiian, A-1 USA (steak sauce) burger, and Mexican (taco) variations of their burgers, of which patties claimed to be 100% pure lean beef and weighed 150 grams.
I also heard the Inferno burger call my name. But the whispers of the Bacon Mushroom burgers to Debbie and me were more convincing. And they didn’t fail us. We didn’t mind the 15-minute waiting time because when our orders arrived, they sent us to heaven: the patties were ridiculously juicy, the bacon and the mushroom touched our souls. Sort of.
As Debbie and I attacked our burgers, we talked and laughed about how much has changed since high school, what career paths our college degrees dragged us into, and what we were busy with lately. We caught up with each other with occasional burger moans (yes, the burgers were that good). A bottle of Coke kept us from choking.
Sid Highsmith, the person behind Gino’s burger, told us that they will be offering more burger variations starting today. Joining in the bandwagon are the Giant burger (with a monstrous 400-gram patty), the King burger, and the Pizza burger.
Gino’s burger has only been around the city the past few months, but it’s already serving up 50-60 burgers a day! Beat that Spongebob Squarepants and your Krabby Patty! Find them in Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ginosburgers

eflex October 3rd, 2011, 05:37 AM Ayala condo nearly sold out: prexy

The 26-storey condominium dubbed as Abreeza Residences of Alveo Land, a subsidiary of Ayala Land Inc., is targeted to be completed in the next three years along its 10-hectare mixed-used development along J.P. Laurel Avenue.Antonino T. Aquino, president of Ayala Land Inc., told the reporters on Sept. 29 during the inauguration of the project that it is part of the first-phase improvement of the company along with the mixed-use development.
He said the company has invested at least P1.5 billion on the construction of the condominium which is a stone’s throw away from Abreeza Mall. “It is located in the first Ayala district in Davao. It would be Davao’s most desirable address,” he said.
He added that it is to replicate what the company had done in Makati where they have constructed prestigious communities. It is part of the firm’s promise to offer the best retail facilities especially to the Davao market.
At least 90% of the 243 units were already sold. Majority of the market were based in the city. Among the project’s amenities include strong Wi-Fi connections, fitness hub, leisure pool, scenic verandas and thematic function rooms.
“It has all been masterfully designed and envisioned for the purpose of creating a high-class home within a vibrant metropolitan district that future residents will surely look forward to coming home to,” he said.
The Ayala Land Inc. is also aggressive to invest in the city. By next year, the 11-storey Kukun Hotel will rise along the mixed-use development. It is described as boutique hotel that offers convenience especially to the tourists.

THE iconic American brand Gap finally opens its latest home at the new Abreeza Mall in Davao City this October. Its first venture outside of Metro Manila, the 500-square-meter boutique carries a full offering of women's and men's wear, as well as the brand's covetable Gap Kids and baby Gap lines.
Within this new shopping haven is the brand's latest Fall collection that ushers in modern, inventive style infused in classic designs that Gap is known for.
Grounded on the brand's 1969 Premium Jeans, the Fall 2011 collection for adults stays true to the brand's commitment in providing wearable but fashionable pieces that take the modern man and woman from day to night, weekday to weekend.
After years of perfecting fit and detail, 2011 ushers in more fashionable options, making elevated casual dressing easier and more flexible.
Following key trends for the season are the hero Skinny and Slim fits, updated with new proportions this Fall, for her, the Skinny Bootcut and Skinny Ponti; for him, the Super Skinny and the Skinny Slouch. Gap also takes the line further by going beyond blues, with cropped and colored options for him and her.
For the younger ones, Gap Kids and babyGap combine chic and practical wear with nostalgic whimsy for Fall 2011, with its Portobello Collection. Inspired by the road of the same name in London's Notting Hill, patterns and colors take from the convergence of ecclectic art and traditional British culture.
Preppy yet modern, the palette is grounded in tones of neutral grey and khaki hues, punched with bright pinks for her, and oranges for him. Patterns explode in colorful florals and fun multi-dots.
And for a limited time, Gap Abreeza offes an exlusive hello Davao tote bag with a minimum single receipt purchase of P5,000. Get this collectible and the latest from Gap with a visit to Abreeza Mall this October.
Gap is exclusively distributed in the Philippines by Casual Clothing Specialists, Inc. (CCSI), member of the Rustan's Group of Companies, and is available at SM Mall of Asia, Shangri-La Plaza Mall, TriNoMa Mall, Robinsons Place Midtown, Glorietta 4, Bonifacio High Street, Alabang Town Center, SM Megamall and Abreeza Mall in Davao, opening in October 2011.
