MtApoStandard December 4th, 2011, 03:07 PM Construction of Tune hotel to start next year
Sunday, December 4, 2011
IT'S all systems go for the establishment of a 150-room hotel in Davao City after representatives of the hotel company met recently with City Government officials in the metropolis.
"They already showed us the perspective," Magnaye said. "The engineer and the architect were also here."
Construction of the new hotel is expected to commence next year. "Once they get the needed permits, they will start the construction," Magnaye said.
Magnaye said the area where the hotel is eyed to be erected falls under the commercial zone of the city and that he does not think the proposed hotel will encounter problems.

MtApoStandard December 4th, 2011, 03:13 PM City confident of hosting 2013 Ad Congress
By Jereco O. Paloma
Sunday, December 4, 2011
THE City Government of Davao is confident of hosting the 2013 Ad Congress, a big event that will open lots of marketing opportunities for the metropolis.
Davao City Investment and Promotions Office (DCIPO) officer-in-charge Jason Magnaye said that in a scale of 1 to 10, the city has an 8 in getting the next Ad Congress.
Magnaye expressed his confidence after the Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte sent a letter of intent signifying the city's interest in hosting the next Ad Congress.
Magnaye said the issue on security, especially with the common misconception that Davao City as part of Mindanao is unsafe place for visitors, is just a thing of the past.
The city's investment chief said the city is ready to accommodate as much as six thousand people with all the existing and soon to be established hotels and other establishments relevant to catering to visitors.
Back in 2006, the city had bid to host the Ad Congress but the city failed to close the deal due to insufficiency of facilities to hold such big event and to accommodate thousands of participants.
"It will really bring in lots of investors to visit the city," Magnaye said when asked of the utmost benefits in hosting the Ad congress might bring to the city.
Magnaye said in terms of facilities and readiness, the city is more than ready to host the 2013 Ad congress.

Gee Ens December 5th, 2011, 01:08 AM Only in Three Key Cities that Condominium Living is Preferred Over House & Lot. :)
Affordable condos gain foothold in metro
By: Tessa R. Salazar
Philippine Daily Inquirer

Will we see more condominiums than house and lots in 2012? What specific locations would condominiums gain a dominant foothold of? Property analysts believe condos will take over the metropolitan areas, while subdivisions will stake their claim in the provinces.
Colliers’ International claims it has been observing this trend for some time now.
Paul Vincent Chua, associate director for valuation and advisory services and head of consultancy and research of Colliers International, a leading global real estate services company, says his team had noticed since 2009 the abundance of affordable, smaller condominium units with stretched payment terms; their growth fueled primarily by the BPO industry, which has spurred the demand for condominium housing in Metro Manila.
“However, the traditional house and lot remains to be preferred, as expected, in provincial cities. Only in key cities are condominiums being preferred over house and lot developments. These are, mainly, Metro Manila, Cebu and Davao. We also saw a decline in HLURB (Housing and Land Use Regulatory Board) licenses to sell for horizontal developments, and a huge increase for vertical developments. It won’t take long until we see former bedroom communities accept condo-living as a substitute,” Chua says.
Enrique Soriano, professor at the Ateneo Graduate School of Business and senior adviser at Wong+Bernstein Business Advisory, says this particular asset class will likely be sustained in 2012. Just last week, Soriano called the condominium take-over in the metropolis a “construction frenzy” of mid-income condominium developments.
Only in Metro Manila, Metro Cebu & Metro Davao.

eflex December 6th, 2011, 02:52 AM Out of the ordinary fashion at Bauhaus
Written By: Ian Garcia

What is avant garde fashion? A friend once told me that “anything she can’t wear on a daily basis is avant garde”. Hmmm… Maybe then, but in this era where Lady Gaga, who wore raw meat as her Grammy ensemble, is considered a fashion icon, avant garde, no matter how experimental, radical or groundbreaking, is suddenly starting to become the norm.
A French word for “vanguard”, which means “innovative, inventive, or at the the forefront in any movement, field, activity, and the like”, avant garde is fashion at its most unconventional and progressive form.
This is exactly how the clothes and accessories at Bauhaus, which recently opened at the Abreeza Mall, their first outlet outside of Metro Manila, can be described.
Originating from Hong Kong, a global and cosmopolitan city where fashion is always one step ahead, Bauhaus offers a range of fashion-forward clothing brands that runs the gamut, from cutting-edge denim wear of Tough Jean, the whimsically colorful clothes of Salad, the modern military inspiration from 80/20, the quirky, unexpected details of Twistedmind, the Japanese-American hybrid-inspired fun line of Superdry, to the “high-quality, immaculately crafted” European numbers from Cheap Monday.
“Our brands have very unique styles, and they are not mass produced. It’s least likely that you will find someone who will wear the same shirt or dress that you have on”, according to Clarissa Reyes, Bauhaus Philippines brand manager, who was recently in town for a get-together lunch with the local media along with our dear friend Michelle Alcomendras of Primer Group and area supervisor, visual merchandiser and stylist Rikki Conwi.
Reyes also shared that their brands offer sometimes amusingly whacky, colorful, bold, loud and even peculiar lines with jewelry, ornaments, and even stuff toys (!) are integrated as part of the apparel.
“Our clothes are made by young designers based in Hong Kong. Rest assured that we have the best quality, with material, color, style and functionality selected with extreme care,“ she added, explaining further that Bauhaus live by the words creativity, originality and functionality.
Pinoys who are fond of avant garde fashion are guaranteed with fresh, new styles arriving each month at all Bauhaus outlets – Shangri La Mall in Makati City, Trinoma in Quezon City, Abreeza Mall in Davao City, and soon to open at Alabang Town Center in Muntinlupa City.
To complement their unique fashion brands, their concept stores, such as the one in Abreeza Mall, also carries the same quirky character: part vintage, part Mao and part, well, a house after a demolition. To know exactly what I mean, just check it yourself…and enjoy!

SM City Davao’s ICT center seen to open this month

The four-storey information and communitcations technology center dubbed as SM Annex, a building part of the expansion of the SM City mall in Ecoland, is expected to finally open within this month, an official of SM Super Malls revealed.
But Debby A. Go, assistant vice president of SM Super Malls-Mindanao Region, said in an interview at Sangguniang Panlungsod that there is no fixed schedule yet on when the annex would be open this month.
“We are still looking into what date should be the opening of the SM Annex,” she said.
The first floor will serve as leasable space for retail and food establishments while the second floor will be an area for cyberzone. The first two floors can accommodate 127 tenants. Go said about 75% of the spaces have already filled.
The remaining floors will serve as a venue for various offices, business process outsourcing firms and marketing event center. The entire ICT center has an area of 49,000 square meters.
In 2007, it was intended to become an ICT Park that would house call centers, business processing operations and IT-related companies. Go said it was changed, however, with the new management directions.
With the change of management directions, the company has applied before the city council to gain an endorsement relative on complying the requirement as set by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority.
On Dec. 2, Go Go was in the Sangguniang Panlungsod during the deliberation of their request. Their request for the “endorsing for support the proposed IT center project” was approved for second reading.

DAVAO Region posted a remarkable growth in exports in the first three quarters of 2011 with a total of $1 billion, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-Davao Region announced Tuesday.
DTI Davao del Sur provincial director Engr. Edwin Banquerigo said the current figure already matched the $1 billion total exports recorded in 2010. In 2009, Davao Region's export performance was pegged at $902.7 million.
"We have a good performance this year compared to that of 2010 as we still have three months to go," Bangquerigo told Sun.Star Davao.

Yes. bihira lang ta makakita ug local film nga ingon-ana ang caliber and greater still the cinematography, plot was nurtured with quality and depth and not one of those mediocre, cheap commercialized entertainment media partly to be blamed for creating a jejemonized, mediocritized society that's getting to be a national burden.
Laranas knows his Metaphysics well. Individuals like him are what this, or any country needs. He's a talented individual who could contribute in finally uplifting the level of a mediocritized country, hopes to have more of high caliber masterpieces from him, hindi siya dapat hilahin na naman ng mga usual mediocre utak talangka na naglipana sa bansang ito.

Editorial: Inday’s veto

Wednesday, December 7, 2011
WE EXPECT loud howls from those who fear the backlash of not welcoming coal-fired power in the city. Power shortage! A disincentive to investors! A return to backwardness!
But studies from all over would show there is no such thing as clean coal. Yes, there will be clean exhaust from coal-fired plant, but that does not make the environmental cost any less threatening, especially for the future generation.
Our opposition from the start has never been for us alone. It has been for the future, and thus we applaud Davao City Mayor Sara Z. Duterte when she expressed apprehension on the environmental and health implications of such power plant.
“I am not willing to compromise the people’s right to health, clean air and water, and environmental sustainability,” we quote her veto message as we applaud. "My stand as hereto manifested is not without basis. It is legally hinged on and would give substance to Section 16 Article II of the 1987 Constitution mandating that 'the state shall protect and advance the right of the people to a balanced and healthful ecology in accord with the rhythm and harmony of nature' which unites with Section 15 of the same law, which states that 'the state shall protect and promote the right to health of the people and instill health consciousness among them."
May we just point it out to those who refuse to see, our country is but a dot in the whole world and we have just enough space and barely enough resources for the 94,349,600 all over the Philippines. We have a little bit more in Davao City, but not for long. Do we even have enough water for these people?
Before we even think of the luxuries that power bring, let us remind ourselves that our most precious resource is our water. We have been assured that no water will be drilled, but as it is, the people are already consuming more than what the city’s aquifers can provide. Sooner than later, we will have to tap our surface water sources and factor in how much it will cost to do so. The farther away the source is, the more expensive it will become. Will our people be able to cope with such expense? They have to, but they will have to suffer for it. How much they will have to suffer, we will only know in the future when there is no longer enough for all. As it is, the water we have been boasting about is not even enjoyed by the people of Lasang and only drops of it are enjoyed by the people of Buhangin. This is but a whisper of warning that water is not inexhaustible.
And then there are the emissions. Yes, the emissions may not be black, but that doesn’t make them less lethal. Add coal ash to that, where will these be kept?
But before we are branded as anti-development as the pro-coal will, let us point to everyone that the investments that are coming in, the construction boom, the bustling economy is just partly about power. Cebu is having a lot of problems with their power and yet they are so up there in terms of investments and business activities. There are other factors that are bringing in the investors, let us not sell ourselves and our city too cheaply as to claim that power generation is all we can offer.
Let this veto not pit the pros against cons. Instead, let this be a challenge for all to look at everything that we have been gifted with and work out ways how we can nurture these gifts and hand these down to the succeeding generations by pushing and investing in technologies that bode well not just for the environment but for the over-all health of the people for generations to come.

its just sad. another setback to competetiveness and growth prospects. davao wont be able to sustain investment growth next year from this year. it will lose P25 billion worth of investment. davao is rich with natural resources for economic advantage, have to agree. but seriously its about prevailing attractiveness of mindanao that makes it hard to get investors that will just take whats offered by the city. another missed opportunity. the conservative attitude just send a wrong signal. wait agin for another time when luck knocks on the door again
sta cruz town should move now to recover this setback to keep the investment for power. theyve done well with embracing development of sibulan which was also feared in davao city. ima medical doctor. if no one believes me i dont care. were a host to so many mammoth generating capacity coal plants in australia especially in most economically advanced states. we were able to sustain clean habitble environment, breath fresh air drink clean water and people are not dying. because we know how to face the challenge of this technology
MtApoStandard December 8th, 2011, 06:14 AM BAE aerospace was sequestered to locate in economic zone south of manila. davao was so disadvantaged with poor eczone infrastructure and a very weak player in the arena of politics
MtApoStandard December 8th, 2011, 06:36 AM imo, investments priorities should be expanded to cover non traditional industries of davao city. cannot just rely on tourism, ict, agri fisheries. its very restrictive for the economy to develop its full potential. population growth is a big battle to win over poverty. davao has no luxury to choose investments it wants bec investments are not streaming in, lets face the reality. the net effect of this policy impacts on limited opportunities for uncontrolled population rise

Councilor to report on German trip next week
| More |
Wednesday, November 23, 2011
DAVAO City Councilor Marissa Salvador-Abella said Tuesday she is yet to come up with a report of her Germany trip late last month.
The City Government sent Abella and Councilor Ranulfo Cabling to Germany to look into the feasibility of the US$1-billion waste-to-energy (WTE) facility being proposed by Herhof to the city.
"Next week pwede na nako 'to ma present (I can present it next week)," Abella told Sun.Star in a brief interview during Tuesday's regular session.
Asked for specific concerns or issues she would want to raise from her trip, she refused to elaborate. All she said was that the trip to Germany went well.
Abella and Cabling were tasked by Davao City Mayor Sara Z. Duterte to present the garbage capacity and conditions of the city to Herhof.
Abella chairs the council’s committee on environment, while Cabling chairs the committee on housing and urban development -- the two main committees that has direct jurisdiction over the proposed project.
Initially, Duterte planned to go to Germany along with other councilors but finally decided to stay in the city because of more important things to attend to before the year ends. (Jereco O. Paloma)

Di na daw xa mudagan sa 2013 so dili na niya problema ang power crisis..tungod sa veto dili na pud madayon ang mga high rises kay wa nay kuryente ang mga mupuyo. Ang mga malls hantod alas 6 na lang. Anyway, just exaggerating..
On a serious note, the veto can still be overruled if the 2/3 of the council votes in favor of it. Remember, they passed the resolution unanimously, so I don't think they will turn around this time. Sarah, in this particular case, just doesn't want her hands dirtied if the concerns about the plant came true.

MtApoStandard December 8th, 2011, 10:49 AM Rody: city needs coal plant, Aboitiz exec gives reaction
Written By: Jose Dalumpines
Thursday, 08 December 2011
Category: Inside News
Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte maintained that the city needs a coal -fired power plant despite the order of Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio junking the ordinance reclassifying parcels of land in Barangay Binugao, Toril, Davao City for the proposed facility.
Speaking to reporters following the blessing of a new shelter for recuperating cancer patients in Margarita Village, Bajada, he said that the city council will discuss the merits of the veto and decide on the next move whether to adopt or override it.
“I have to be consistent. It is a matter of principle. I maintain that it is good and it will help Mindanao and we will need it one of these days because of the critical power needs. I will not change my stand,” Duterte said.
In a statement sent to the TIMES, Erramon I. Aboitiz, chief executive officer of Aboitiz Power Corporation, said the company is still evaluating its options.
“We have the track record to show that in carrying out our responsibilities in developing and operating these power plants, we have always adhered to high standards of professionalism and integrity and resolutely advanced the well-being of our community and the environment,” he said.
Duterte said he still have to study the veto of the mayor by looking through the references and the scientific findings cited by the mayor.
“We need to account the number of persons there who are either sick, died of cancer or sterile attributed to the coal-fired power plant operation. Has its operation affected the environment, with the many trees planted around the facility. Give us the facts, do not give us statements?” he pointed out.
Duterte said the best way to gather data on the impact of coal-fired power plants to public health is from the areas where coal fired power plants operate.
He explained that overriding the mayor’s veto on the issue will end the story.
Duterte said that while the mayor may be the titular head, the city council is also powerful since it represents the people.
“Whatever vote is done there is a representation of the vote of the people. This is democracy, we follow the majority,” he pointed out.
Duterte-Carpio has vetoed an ordinance reclassifying parcels of land in Barangay Binugao, Toril, Davao City for the proposed 300 Megawatt coal-fired power plant project from protected medium industrial zone to protected heavy industrial zone citing it as prejudicial to public welfare.
City Ordinance N0. 0200-11. Series of 2011 was passed on third and final reading by the city councilon November 15, 2011.
In a letter sent to Margarito dela Cruz, secretary of the Sangguniang Panlungsod, she said that even with the imminent energy shortage besetting the city in the future, setting up and operating a coal-fired power plant as an option is detrimental to the environment and public health.
“I am not willing to compromise the people’s right to health, clean air and water and water and environmental sustainability,” Duterte-Carpio said.
She also stressed that coal burning adds up to global warming due to the massive carbon dioxide emitted in the atmosphere as cited by various studies.
She said that due to the environmental hazards pose by coal-fired power plants, introducing it to Davao City is a step backward.
Duterte-Carpio asserted that her stand is anchored on Sec. 16, Art. II of the 1987 Constitution, which mandates that the state shall protect and advance the right of the people to a balanced and healthful ecology in accord with the rthyhm and harmony of nature which unites with the management and maintenace of ecological balance within their respective territorial jurisdiction, subjet to the provision of law and national policies.
“As mayor, I should be at the forefront of effecting the observance of the right our people to health and balanced ecology and the correlative duty to the people, which I suppose, rests largely upon the government to refrain from impairing the environment,” she said.
]Health won’t be compromised
Aboitiz in his statement said the company believes that the health of people and the environment will not be compromised by the project while it will ensure the long-term security of its power supply on account of an acute power shortage in Mindanao.
Aboitiz Power offered to commit a sizable investment to build the 300 MW circulating fluidized-bed coal-fired power plant in Davao because this will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology capable of meeting stringent health and environmental standards.
“This is the most suitable facility for Davao City as it can answer both the city’s need for a power source that is equipped with proven capabilities to safeguard the health of people and the environment and a dependable power source to fuel its progress and that of its citizenry,” he said.
Aboitiz further explained: “In fact, because of the relatively lower cost of generating power from a coal-fired plant, this will provide Davao City with relatively lower generation rates. This should strengthen Davao City’s position as the most competitive city in Mindanao.”
He said the Aboitiz group of companies have been doing business in Mindanao for more than 50 years.
“We consider Davao City not only as an ideal place to do business but also as our home and we will not do anything to harm our beloved city, its people or the environment,” the executive said.

skyion December 9th, 2011, 03:56 AM wait till PEAK COAL skyrockets world coal prices to as high as 600% :ohno:
Davao Light used to be on prime ground for clean Renewable Energy sources that had benefitted the city for many years, it's strange that this time it's persisting on coal plant that's even shunned by most industrialized countries nowadays, it seems the Aboitiz that's insisting for coal plant is not Davao-based. So unpopular had coal become to more discerning societies that even some concerned citizens from those countries lobbied at pressuring their governments to cease providing financial aid to donor countries that insist on using coal plants.
perhaps this could partly be the reason why some foreign (particularly Japanese) businessmen rated the Philippines the least preferred to invest in the Asian region (other than the elected president being an obvious Yellow Oligarch lackey) as among those concerned citizens that lobbied such advocacy were from Japan.

since 19th century, coal was the major player of the power industry in australia. they aged, becomes inefficient and were shutdown. but new plants are replacing them. it didnt wreck our ecosystem. the murray river which is the lifeline of eastern states all the way to south australia is still a very rich with fish population and a major tourist attraction(river cruise). it is the source of our drinking water and industries that rely on water. for centuries of existence of coal plants to this day, it has been the partner in the rise to become a developed economy and a liveable country. today, australias big cities and other major state capitals are among the 10 top most liveable cities in the world.

So unpopular had coal become to more discerning societies that even some concerned citizens from those countries lobbied at pressuring their governments to cease providing financial aid to ?donor countries that insist on using coal plants.
perhaps this could partly be the reason why some foreign (particularly Japanese) businessmen rated the Philippines the least preferred to invest in the Asian region (other than the elected president being an obvious Yellow Oligarch lackey) as among those concerned citizens that lobbied such advocacy were from Japan.

BroiledGum December 10th, 2011, 12:14 PM DAVAO CITY, Dec. 4 (PNA) – The first Muslim-owned hotel in Mindanao opened Thursday, December 1 along J.P. Laurel Avenue, Bajada, this city.
Samira Ali Gutoc, member of the board of directors of the bank said the setting up of El Bajada Hotel in Davao City is a symbol of strong ties among the sectors in this city with its major partner, the Al Amanah Islamic Investment Bank.
Gutoc said the hotel is also offering Halal food in its restaurant.
She acknowledged the sincerity of the city in responding to Muslim investors like this first major Muslim-owned hotel in the island.
“And this might initiate entry of investors from other Muslim countries,” she said.
“In Manila, there are Muslim lodging houses and inns but this I think is the first major investment of this kind,” she said.
El Bajada Hotel is owned by Esmael W. Ebrahim of Ebgum Enterprises. The hotel has a total of 70 rooms.
Ebrahim who is a businessman from Cotabato City, in an earlier report, said he decided to invest in the hotel business after he was convinced by friends that the industry is booming.
Ebrahim whose business is more on agricultural produce said “operating a hotel is not my line of business but because I believe the industry is growing, I decided to accept the challenge”. (PNA)

http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/344328/davao-city-least-vulnerable-biz-risks-environment-changes-study
Davao City turned out to be the least vulnerable city to business risks and environmental changes compared to other major cities...
In a study initiated by the World Wide Fund (WWF-Philippines) in partnership with the Bank of Philippine Islands Foundation, Davao was found to have the least level of vulnerability compared to other cities. This despite the findings that sea level rise, increased sea surface temperatures, ocean acidification, and inter-annual variability of rainfall have a high possibility of happening here.
The study ran for a year and made use of statistics, research, and stakeholders forum.
It also revealed that Davao will have to solve its in-migration as it emerged as a site of refuge for an increasing number of migrants.
Davao also registered the highest population growth rate at 2.88 percent.
Tan explained that as the city accommodates more migrants who realize that Davao is indeed the "promised land," it also faces challenges for sustainable development especially in sustaining essential utilities like water and power.

MANILA, Philippines – Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte received an award from the Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor (PCUP) during the celebration of its 25th anniversary at the Urban Poor Solidarity Week in Malacañang on Friday.
The award recognizes individuals from various sectors who are known to help informal settlers.
Duterte was applauded by the audience when she received the award from President Benigno Aquino III.
Urban poor leaders were also given the Natatanging Paglingkod Award for their projects that aim to improve livelihood of informal settlers.
Duterte stirred controversy last July after media caught her on camera repeatedly punching the sheriff of the Davao Regional Trial Court Abe Andres during a demolition.
Duterte had asked for a 2-hour extension of the deadline to demolish shanties but demolition teams pushed through with their operation. -- Report from Willard Cheng, ABS-CBN News

BroiledGum December 11th, 2011, 05:16 AM What I LOVE about Davao:
- social services (police+medical+rescue-911)
- quality of life (affordable goods, healthy lifestyle)
- environmental consciousness (good waste management policies and infra)
- huge export volumes (agri products, esp. banana)
- clean energy + safe tap water (also arguably one of the best in the world)
- orderly traffic (heavy at some points at some time, but still orderly) - thanks to synchronized traffic signalization
- honest, accommodating taxi drivers (at least 95% of them are)
- island to highland destinations (beaches, garden resorts, mountain resorts)
- world-class festivities (Kadayawan + Araw ng Dabaw)
- adventure sports: white water rafting + zipline + wakeboarding + diving + parasailing + mountain climbing + trekking
- great malls + shopping centers + bazaars
- cornucopia of fruits: durian + mangosteen + pomelo + lanzones + rambutan + mango + pinya
- cultivated Lumad culture
- clean roads and well-maintained islands
- highly commended schools and universities
- very low crime rates (i feel safe anywhere anytime); crimes mostly just petty theft (no hold-ups)
- great food
What I don't LIKE:
- poor downtown roads (usu. the middle 2 lanes are good, the outer 2 lanes are either still unpaved or heavily-wrought with potholes); side streets are narrow and crowded
- minor city-led activities (most of them) are too barangay-minded; Pasko fiesta for me is cheap, just go to Rizal Park and engage in activities there. Yung naabutan ko parang barangay amateur singing contest lang. And look at the preponderance of street booths along roxas and outside people's park. looks just like a pseudo-organized assembly of street vendors with nothing new to offer
- this in contrast to what i have seen in Bacolod during their Panaad festival. Most of the shops there were selling hand-made souvenir items
- on a good note though, the christmas bazaar in davcon and mts were good. But take note, those were organized and sponsored by the private sector
- street lighting is poor. Yes, our roads are all lit, unfortunately they are not brightly lit. I don't know if you noticed but our roads, even the national ones, only have street lights to one side and the distance between two light posts is huge. I didn't see this before until a friend from dumaguete said our roads look dark. Now im noticing it everywhere and I don't like it. I've seen the road lights in Digos's major highway and they're better.
- conflict between good city management and people leadership. Our LGU is already resigned about doing something with illegal vendors, informal settlers, beggars, establishments too close to roads, payong-payong drivers, street children, homeless people, partly due to humanitarian reasons but mostly due to perceived helplessness on general poverty.
- LGU has no intention of putting up a major sports complex in the city, and there is no city-wide organized sports activity. Summer sports festival is a good start though.
- and of course, the spaghetti wires.

manela_boy December 11th, 2011, 04:54 PM Allow me please to butt in, lol!
I don't think our LGU should altogether forbid the establishment of the coal power plant in the city but instead just control its use. I think that's what the Kyoto Protocol is for - for countries to limit the emission of greenhouse gases, but not totally eliminate them. This is because in reality, developed countries are highly dependent on fossil fuels and totally eliminating this will cripple them all.
There's such thing as carbon emission trading - countries are limited to certain amount of emissions, and also emission reductors such as forestation are considered. Countries with high emissions can actually buy emission points from countries with less emission. Tingin ko naman ang magiging emission natin kung sakali eh wala lang compared sa mga developed countries. And I think we still have enough emission absorbers that could still improve our emission points. I think our LGU should study this already established system. We must admit, we can't sustain progress by being conservative on this. We need more power to sustain growth. Period.
Kung gusto talaga ng mayor natin na mabawasan ang pollution sa Davao, why not gradually eliminate the tricycles and jeepneys and promote electric jeepneys, trikes, or public transport systems. I'm sure mas gaganda hangin natin nito, mas uunlad pa tayo.. ;)

Frankly, I was a bit shocked by the rumor as I myself had personally interviewed Mayor Inday Sara on the then touchy issue about the coal-fired power plant. I can clearly recall that she said that given the absence of other options, the Aboitiz Power proposal is the most viable. I called some media friends but they were all in limbo. My friend and his pal were a bit worried. Early Monday up to late Tuesday, they were going about town, my friend bragging to his buddy how huge are the new investments that have been poured to Davao City thus far. He also bragged that the city officialdom had approved an ordinance that would assure the steady supply of power to the emerging industries. Now his friend was teasing him "paano ngayon yan."
Wednesday noon, I finally got a copy of the mayor's veto. She cited her concern on health and environment which is quite understandable. But what struck me however are her citations of data which, even as these are factual, had been over taken by time and technological advancement. I knew how busy the mayor could be that counter-checking the data fed to her will eat up her time. A top executive like her would therefore rely on whoever provided her the data which I would of course presume she held in trust.
Let me cite some points in the veto which I suspect was culled from the no-to-coal crusaders. What was obtaining in 2004 and beyond, which were cited in the veto, have radically changed. Technologies aimed at capturing or sequestering pollutants from sulphur, carbon, and nitrogen oxides as well as mercury have evolved in dramatic pace. Worldwide, governments, including the Philippines had passed Clean Air Acts, precisely to address the environmental and health issues. . . .
What the environment NGOs failed or conveniently skipped or even hid in their presentation is that research and development had dramatically changed some equations in the search for alternative source of energy and in the technical designs used by the traditional generators of energy. The trend could have been towards nuclear-powered generators since it is presumably the cleanest energy source but the catastrophe that hit Fuksuhima atomic reactors in Japan early this year altered all that.

mCx2 December 12th, 2011, 11:51 AM Sara Duterte hailed for helping urban poor
http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/nation/regions/12/10/11/sara-duterte-hailed-helping-urban-poor
:)
Now this award will surely typecast her as the urban poor hero and will be her undoing in efforts to curb illegal land grabbing/settling,legal eviction and demolition of squatters for development purposes, land owner claims and even clean-up efforts in the slums.:ohno:

Davao council overrides mayor’s veto on coal
By Jereco O. Paloma
Monday, December 12, 2011
DAVAO CITY -- The City Council decided with finality on Monday to supersede Mayor Sara Duterte’s veto on an ordinance allowing a coal-fired power plant operation in the city. Amid appeals from environmentalists, 21 of the 23 councilors present voted to override Mayor Duterte's veto. . .
Councilor Melchor Quitain, who read the council's motion to override the mayor's veto, admitted there are other alternative sources of energy aside from the AboitizPower Corporation’s proposed 300-megawatt Therma South Energy Project.
"But to say that there are alternative sources of energy is not the same as saying that they are available, and to say that they are available, is not the same as saying that they are available now; and to say that they are available now, is not the same as saying that they are doable and workable here in Davao City, given our city's weather condition and topographical nuances. This is not the same as saying that these alternative sources can supply our energy all hours of the day whatever may be the weather condition at any given time. There are things that are easier said than done," Quitain said.

IN A stunning move, Davao City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte shot down the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) ordinance reclassifying a parcel of land in barangay Binugao, Toril which would pave the way for the establishment of the highly controversial multi-million coal-fired power plant of the AboitizPower Corporation.
By exercising her veto power, Mayor Duterte has in a way blocked the project from being implemented and emphasized that people's health was her primary concern in arriving at the decision.
Plan your Sinulog week ahead and find out what's in store for Sinulog 2012.
The lady mayor's move, while seen by anti-coal advocates as a sign of victory to their cause, dealt a major blow to the project which Aboitiz boasted as the answer to Mindanao's looming energy crisis. Duterte's junking of the measure also came as a stunning wallop against the SP presiding officer himself, Vice Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte who had moved heaven and earth just to have the coal plant realized.
The vice mayor, no less than the mayor's father, was pushing for the coal-fired plant right from the very start, and was surely surprised by the development after the proceedings seemed to go well the moment the local lawmaking body approved the reclassification. One councilor admitted they were completely surprised by the mayor's move.
But, now that the local chief executive had rendered her decision on the proposed facility, the SP is left with two choices: either to accept the veto or override it. Should it decide to accept the veto it will not do the SP good as it will bolster belief that it is a rubber stamp of the executive department.
The SP decided yesterday to override Mayor Duterte's veto. It may result to a strained relationship between the legislative and executive branches of the local government. The project will goes on as proposed. The override of the veto may send the SP into a head-on collision with City Hall and things could get worse before they get any better in Davao City as far as governance is concerned.
While others may see this to have an adverse affect -- that SP and City Hall do not see eye to eye with each other --what happened actually was democracy in action. It only shows that the local government has check and balance.

ANOTHER satellite district emergency response unit will soon open in Calinan District, Davao City, within the first quarter of 2012, an official of the Central Communications and Emergency Response Center (Central 911) said.
Mario Verner Monsanto, Central 911 chief, said the satellite unit will form part of the three satellite centers they had finance for this year's budget.
Plan your Sinulog week ahead and find out what's in store for Sinulog 2012.
Monsanto said putting up satellite centers in all districts will allow the city to save and respond to emergency situation more efficiently.
The city reduces the budget of Central 911 from P80 million this year to only P64 million for next year.
The satellite office in Panacan opened last September while that in Toril opened in December.
"Mas maka-tipid ta kay mas faster naman tam aka response sa mga emergencies labi na sa mga lagyo na lugar (We can really save from this since we can respond to emergencies especially in remote areas faster than before)," Monsanto said.
Under normal circumstances, Monsanto said, an ambulance can arrive in Calinan from its main office in Sandawa in a range of 35 to 45 minutes, and with the satellite centers, time of emergency response can now be faster.
The city spent P1 million for each satellite center, which is packed with an ambulance, and four emergency personnel on stand-by.

Davao City Councilor Al Ryan Alejandre said the "Pasalubong Center" will showcase Davao Region's authentic products, fruits and flowers.
"We will finally have the soft opening on December 8," said Alejandre, who chairs the City Council committee on tourism.
The City Government of Davao has allocated P5 million for Phase 1 of the center, which will have a consortium of women's organizations as some of the tenants.
The "Pasalubong Center" is aimed at enhancing the small, medium entrepreneurs in the city.
Meanwhile, Alejandre said the City Government of Davao is preparing to stage this year's Pasko Fiesta.
Alejandte said the Pasko Fiesta will be jointly handled by the city and the private sector.
One of the added attractions in this year's event will be the "Lechonan sa Chavez," according to Alejadre.
City Hall has allotted P5 million, which will cover prizes for all events initiated by the city.

eflex December 15th, 2011, 02:28 AM Cinematheque construction set next year in Davao City

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/14 December) – Cinematheque, a 150-seater movie facility of the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), is set to be built by next year beside the city’s Pasalubong Center near People’s Park along Palma Gil Street.
“It will finally push through,” Maria Lourdes G. Monteverde, president of Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc., said on Tuesday in the weekly Club 888 press forum at Marco Polo Davao Hotel.
She said the recent approval of the city council of the ordinance granting the mayor the authority to sign a deed of usufruct with the FDCP would pave the way for the establishment of the facility in the 173-square meter lot near the Pasalubong Center.
The ordinance was approved under suspended rules on Monday during the regular session of the city council.
The draft of the memorandum of agreement said the city government “shall put into effect the transfer of the property upon the signing of the deed of usufruct to FDCP and pay for all taxes and fees, if any, at its own expense.”
The would-be location of Cinematheque has an existing building, which the FDCP will renovate for the facility that would offer free movies to the public.
The Cinematheque would house both a film archive and a small cinema. It will also serve as a venue for independent filmmakers.
“FDCP shall ensure that the building and its premises shall be well taken care of and maintained properly and shall bear all expenses for the operations, maintenance, sanitation and other related expenses,” the draft MOA said.
Peter Philip Lat, coordinator of the Davao City Film Festival under FDCP, said earlier that it would be the second Cinematheque in the country.
The facility is scheduled to open in time for or prior to the first Davao City Film Festival in May next year.
The first Cinematheque was recently built in Baguio City with 25 seats. It is part of the council’s Sineng Pambansa program with the objective to “bring Filipino films to Filipinos” in its effort to revive and raise the standards of the motion picture industry in the country.
The FDCP also planned to put up Cinematheque facilities in Marawi City and Iloilo City. (MindaNews)

Thanini December 15th, 2011, 09:34 AM Cinematheque construction set next year in Davao City
By Mindanews | Wednesday| December 14, 2011 | Filed under: Top Stories
(MindaNews)

skyion December 16th, 2011, 02:19 AM I had observed Nature's climate changing dramatically nowadays, but this time it is relative akin to Consciousness. Also did research on it particularly on Physics and I had shared ideas with other Physics enthusiasts many years before, including my European inventor friend, a British NASA scientist, a Doctor-Physicist (who profusely thanked me for sharing ideas) through international Physics chatroom and forums in this Information Age. I had once observed it with Mt. Apo years ago. It also occured during the Cory administration, and recently in the Davao Matina flashflood. It seems the pattern I had been observing had been occurring again, this time with a typhoon path sneaking its way to the Davao area.
from the pattern I had been observing, it will not be surprising that the Davao area will become a typhoon path, otherwise a rare occurrence previously, with the advent of the construction of the coal plant.

there is an ancient Chinese proverb that stated a butterfly fluttering its wings could be felt as hurricanes in the other side of the world.
The statement may have sense to it, in fact it is interpreted in the Chaos Theory of Physics as the "Butterfly Effect."

Davao's rich and diverse ecology is something that cannot be taken lightly and should be in profound, responsible stewardship, especially in a Living Planet whose Ecological balance is being threatened, but they are stubborn and did not heed, the inevitable symbiosis is now manifesting itself.

FYI.
PSWS #1 - Tropical cyclone winds of 30 km/h (19 mph) to 60 km/h (37 mph) are expected within the next 36 hours. (Note: If a tropical cyclone forms very close to the area, then a shorter lead time is seen on the warning bulletin.)
PSWS #2 - Tropical cyclone winds of 60 km/h (37 mph) to 100 km/h (62 mph) are expected within the next 24 hours.
PSWS #3 - Tropical cyclone winds of 100 km/h (62 mph) to 185 km/h (115 mph) are expected within the next 18 hours.
PSWS #4 - Tropical cyclone winds of greater than 185 km/h (115 mph) are expected within 12 hours.
Forecasters are already doing their thing, forecasting. Yan ang mahirap sa Pilipino kasi they want to wait for the rains and winds before thay are convinced that a storm is coming

It's a bit too squat to be built on a flatbed of the present location unless if you build it on a hilly part like the Australian Parliament House.

DAVAO CITY, Philippines—The Anflocor Group of Companies, which is owned by the Floirendo family, announced it will build an international container terminal in Panabo City in Davao del Norte in the first quarter 2012.
Alexander Valoria, Anflocor president and chief executive officer, said the company finalized a deal with Aboitiz Construction last week for the P2.7-billion container terminal project, which will rise on what used to be the wharf of the banana producer Tagum Development Corp., also owned by Anflocor.
“We are bullish that this project will catalyze the economic development of the region by enhancing globe trade through the construction of the modern container port facility,” Valoria said in a statement e-mailed to the Inquirer on Thursday.
He said Anflocor planned to start operation of the terminal in the first quarter of 2013.
“This project is seen to create faster turnaround time of vessels, orderly ingress and egress resulting in faster turnaround of delivery trucks, reliable plug-in facilities for reefer cargo and the capacity to accommodate larger vessels due to its deep draft,” Valoria said.
On the local economy, he said Anflocor has projected that the container terminal will generate investments and more job opportunities.

If we measure the effect of a single coal power plant in Davao to the "planet's ecological balance", I think it would be almost negligible compared to, say, what China's pollution is doing to our planet now. In progress, there is a price to pay. If we won't compromise on that small cost, then we would run out of things to talk about in this forum lol! Hey, there would be no skyscrapers to talk about here if our power producers don't keep up with the demands. ;)
skyion December 16th, 2011, 01:56 PM If we measure the effect of a single coal power plant in Davao to the "planet's ecological balance", I think it would be almost negligible compared to, say, what China's pollution is doing to our planet now. I guess you should have known by now how coal plants in China or anywhere else had already affected your host city with flashfloods and typhoons getting more and more intense, not to mention its deadly effects on the recent Matina flashflood in Davao ultimately traced to domestic environmental degradation on huge quarries nearby. Its effect is a global phenomenon but adversely affects even your own neighborhood and should have been a common knowledge by now. Only this time it is dragged further into another domestic location, whose consequences are yet to be seen as one better braces if insisting on its stubborn position, although it seems the consequences are already manifesting itself at this moment.
Global Warming (or Cooling) is said to be attributed to the natural Solar Cycle phenomenon as it had been for centuries, but as Humanity progressed beyond the 20th Century there is tied to it the added burden of manmade factors that further worsen it, and the major contributors discovered were the emmissions of coal plants through the years. the Planet is already teetheting to its brink but adding up the burden may have devastating consequences as proven by the El Nino and La Nina phenomenon and threatening to worsen further.
There had been arguments from the Scientific Community that the Planet had proven itself to be resilient in adjusting to such changes, but its further argument puts the alarming question that remains for Humanity itself and Civilization that we know cannot be guaranteed to survive the moment the planet inevitably adjusts to such dilemma.
The issue on power needs had become a complex and highly politicized one, and the so called power outages in Mindanao (ironically caused by El Nino but attempted to be resolved under this Yellow administration by, to borrow an official's term, "retarded" solution of worsening it with coal plants) had been said to be deliberate and avoidable as the existing plants were inefficiently run way below its capacity, and the advice to reserve hydro resources during the rainy season in preparation for the dry were not heeded, hinting of conspiring to deliberately use it as excuse for saturating the island with coal plants as otherwise it had been shunned in more aware countries esp. with the inevitable scenario of PEAK COAL expected to jack up coal prices to as much as 600% . add up to how to this Oligarch media manipulated electorate had unwittingly chosen a candidate that utterly lacks the competence of addressing the energy dilemma except to be lackey to its financiers (obviously the coal industry among it for it cannot penetrate with "evil" Gloria's camp with her clear support for Renewable Energy with Asia's landmark RE Law, nor with Villar's camp for its major platform being the Environment). But with the oligarch manipulated Cory Constitution esp. on foreign investment 60/40 ownership and now run by the same Oligarchic interests through the Oligarch puppet as president, the country had been rendered the least preferred site to invest by foreign investors, rendering such investors especially on Renewable Energy to lack the confidence what with the Oligarch agenda, with an oligarch puppet in position, of monopolizing the basic services in the country, particularly on power.
