And they have a 188pesos accommodation suited for backpackers. For a new, cool, clean & safe place in a metropolis like Davao, this is unimaginably a bargain.:)

if group kayo, you may try blue velvet hotel/dormitel located right in the heart of davao city along claveria st.

kung mag isa ka lang, try mo las casitas or kung budget talaga try sampaguita inn.

Adopted Davaoeña

I’m born and raised in Zamboanga City, claimed as “Asia’s Latin City. I love my place that regardless of the bad news I’m there to defend it. In fact I used to sell Zamboanga with my friends around the Philippines that’s how I'm fond of my place but everything changed when I got married with my 8-year boyfriend, born and raised in Davao, a pure Davaoeño. Sometimes we can’t avoid changes in life; we will soon leave our place and learn to adopt new things that comes our way. I have a lot of denials that Davao is far better than the place I grew up but in my 3 years stay here in Davao City, I can say ----- DAVAO: life is here!

As you are about to touch down Davao City Airport, inside the plane, you’ll hear this voice over “DAVAO STRICTLY IMPLEMENTS ITS NON - SMOKING POLICY IN PUBLIC AREAS”.

I remember my older brother when he visited me here in Davao told me in chavacano “ahat man yo pwede man quit smoking aqui” or in English “I will be force to quit smoking here in an instant”. You need to follow rules or suffer the fine.

Davao International Airport / Francisco Bangoy International Airport

you don’t have someone to fetch you, clean and air-conditioned metered taxis are there to receive you with big smile. “DAVAO TAXI DRIVERS” are respectful and trust worthy they will even give you’re .50 cent change… that’s how HONEST they are.

You can ask for receipt if you need one

you’re craving for sumptuous food and you don’t have time to cook, fine dine to fast foods inside the malls like ABREEZA, GAISANO, NCCC, ROBINSONS and SM CITY DAVAO to name a few.

Well known Shopping Malls around the Metro
you feel like hanging out at night with friends try MTS (Matina Town Square) , The Venue, Along Torres, or you can enjoy overviewing Davao City lights and cold breeze at Jack's Ridge.

you don’t have family or friends here in Davao where you can stay, there are a lot of accommodations to choose from, Backpacker Inns to well known hotels such as Marco Polo, Apo View, Grand Regal, Water Front Insular, Royale Mandaya to mention some. Just be sure to book in advance especially during Kadayawan Festival which falls every 3rd week of August.

Well known Hotels

you want to rest away from the buzzling city life, I will recommend you to stay in Samal Island beach resorts, it’s like shooting birds with one stone. Why? Aside from having a nice accomodation , one can unwind and enjoy the white beach sand, water sports activities such as diving, parasailing, jetski, banana boat ride, kayaking, snorkeling, etc.

My favorite thing in Samal Island

Monfort Fruit Bat Sanctuary in Babak, IGACOS

Samal Island beach resorts I've been to.
you’re traveling with your kids, there are a lot of parks with free entrances like the famous Peoples Park (must visit) and Magsaysay Park where you can buy a variety of fruit, like the king of fruit-- durian, mangoosteen, pomelo, mangoes, pineapple etc. Parks with reasonable entrance fees like Crocodile Park where you can see “Pangil” (second largest crocodile in captivity). Eden Nature Park, Malagos Garden, Philippine Eagle Center, GAP Farming, Japanese Tunnel, Butterfly Sanctuary, Zorb Park, Wake Board Park (first in Mindanao) to name some.

Park attractions

you feel like staying here for good and is concern about your children's education, Davao has so much to offer in terms of quality education and there are a lot of notable institutions in Davao offering tertiary education to choose from.

you’re worried about the peace and order of the City, don’t be! Because Davao is one of the 20 Most livable City in ASIA as awarded by Asiaweek.

you think Davao City is already over populated, then you're wrong. Davao City encompasses over 244,000 hectares making it the 8th largest city in the world in terms of land area.
not of these great leaders who actively engage in good governance, for me, Davao won’t be as beautiful as Davao now. As an adopted Davaoeña, we should be very thankful to our Mayor, Vice Mayor and the rest City officials, I’m not saying this to be on the good side of the Vice Mayor but due to my personal experience with my idol--Vice Mayor Rody Duterte .

Year back December 2010, after I attended the Misa de Gallo with my husband at Saint Paul Parish, we dropped by PAN DE POGON (a 24 hour bakery along Quimpo Boulevard) to buy some hot pandesal for breakfast since it was still 4 AM.[B] I met a taxi driver that was carrying a bag of bread on his way back to his cab, greeted me with a smile and said “maayong buntag diha mare! Sayu pa kaayu!” I smiled back and said “guikan mi nag misa de gallo Sir” then I realized he was a familiar face… surprisingly it was the Vice Mayor, with a towellete on his neck, a typical taxi driver image, then he immediately said “ o, sigue, una sah ku kay mamasada pa ku” funny thing was, I got frozen and was not able to say a word again but just waved bye.. I was star trucked! I couldn’t believe what just had happened, even the other customer there was not aware that it was the Vice Mayor, the taxi driver in disguised. Who would expect? A high ranked official making his way to check his constituent without "media papogi", showing a strong sense of responsibility to his people. Definitely LIFE IS HERE IN DAVAO!

The Dorm type of JTC Tower (Green Windows) is very appropriate for the group of 10. Though one room can occupy as much as 14 guests yet you might be able to bargain to have it exclusively for your group to ensure privacy or exclusiveness. For almost 2k a night for 10 (@188/person), it's the best bargain in town (IMO lang. I'm sure there are better places to stay in the city that I do not know). I saw the place personally (clean, safe) when I was looking for accommodation for the event we hosted here. Just be sure you can bargain for exclusive use of the room. Kasi group naman pala kayo. Hope you'll have a grand time in Davao & Samal cities. :)

Whale shark sightings in Davao

Last February 27, a whale shark (a.k.a. “butanding”) was spotted near Limao Reef, Samal Island, by a group of scuba divers of the Carabao Dive Center. The sighting was a thrilling surprise for everyone, but not exactly a rare occurrence in the Davao Gulf.

This writer, who is the current president of the Davao Reef Divers Club, was among the dive group who saw the shark that measured roughly 15 feet in length. Whale sharks are known to grow to an average of 32 feet, which makes the February-27 sighting a juvenile animal. Another indication that it was a juvenile is its tail, which had a larger upper fin. (Adult whale sharks’ tails are more crescent-shaped.)

This writer recalls that the butanding approached the boat, M/B Datu Budas, while the latter was idling nearly in front of Paradise Island Beach Resort. The docile shark circled the boat a couple of times before it went on its way north.

The divers note that the butanding displayed curiosity towards them and the boat. It approached the boat’s port side on the surface and then continued to inspect the hull from under the water.

Luckily, a handful of divers were able to swim with the gentle giant (whose kind is considered to be the largest extant fish in the world) and record the event on camera. A video of the whale-shark sighting is online at www.scubadavao.com.

wow... good! It means the Biodiversity of Davao Gulf is still intact!

I don't want to sound Skyion or anything but I've noticed the siltation building up in the gulf near DMMA/ECOLAND which needs our attention.

Also, as an Agdao boy, I also noticed considerable destruction and trash buildup in the area there. Matingala na lang ka sa balay in stilts but sa pagtan-aw nimo sa baba, puno kaayo og basura.

We need to take action on this.

Lord of the Forest
Can the endangered Philippine eagle survive in the shrinking forests of its island home?

By Mel White
Photograph by Klaus Nigge

If the irrevocable transition of one species from rarity to extinction causes a rent in the fabric of our planet, exactly how big a hole would be left by the loss of the Philippine eagle? No disrespect is meant to the basking malachite damselfly or the fine-lined pocketbook mussel, because all creatures—and plants too—help turn the infinitely complex cogs of the biosphere. But the loss of this glorious bird would steal some of the world's wonder. It glides through its sole habitat, the rain forests of the Philippines, powerful wings spread to seven feet, navigating the tangled canopy with unexpected precision. It is possible that no one has ever described this rare raptor, one of the world's largest, without using the word "magnificent." If there are those who did, then heaven heal their souls.

In the kind of irony all too familiar to conservationists, however, the very evolutionary adaptations that made it magnificent have also made it one of the planet's most endangered birds of prey. There is no competition for prey from tigers, leopards, bears, or wolves in the Philippine archipelago, the eagle's only home, so it became, by default, the king of the rain forest. Expanding into an empty ecological niche, it grew to a length of three feet and a weight of up to 14 pounds. A nesting pair requires 25 to 50 square miles of forest to find enough prey—mammals such as flying lemurs and monkeys; snakes; and other birds—to feed themselves and the single young they produce every other year.

"The birds had the islands all to themselves, and they grew big," says Filipino biologist Hector Miranda, who has studied the eagles extensively. "But it was a trade-off, because the forest that created them is almost gone. And when the forest disappears—well, they're at an evolutionary dead end."

Indeed, with deforestation rates in the Philippines among the highest in the world (more than 90 percent of primary forest may have been lost to logging and development), the eagle has been reduced to a population estimated at several hundred breeding pairs.

Awareness about conservation issues, however, is rising in the Philippines. A series of devastating floods and mud slides in the past decade has convinced Filipinos that the loss of forest affects not just wildlife but people too. In recent years new protected land areas have been established in the Philippines; one, the 17,300-acre Cabuaya Forest, specifically protects the eagle. And in an effort to prevent the eagle population from dwindling further, the Philippine Eagle Foundation on Mindanao island is working to educate Filipinos about the bird, which was declared a national emblem in 1995. At least some of those who once would have shot an eagle for food or sport now let it soar unmolested.

Meanwhile, visitors to the foundation's education center can see more than a dozen eagles, some of which were rescued after they were trapped or shot. Twenty-one birds have been raised as part of a breeding program that aims someday to release birds back into restored habitat on the Philippine Islands. Will the efforts be enough? Perhaps. The first surviving chick in that program just celebrated his 16th birthday. When he was born he was given the name Pag-asa, the Tagalog word for hope.

Seriously, the cities that were not mentioned in the survey did not mean that they are less polluted than those that were mentioned. It's just that only the better known cities were inlcuded because they create a bigger impact nationally. In other words, hindi sila nag aksaya ng resources sa mga relatively unknown cities.

Just as i thought.

Abreeza BPO expected to open early next year

Written By: Kristianne Fusilero
Sunday, 11 March 2012
Category: Economy
The management of the Abreeza mixed-use project is planning to open the seven-storey business-process outsourcing (BPO) tower, a building in the 10-hectare mixed-used Abreeza project along J. P. Laurel Avenue, within the first quarter next year.

Antonio Luis C. Escano, operations manager of Abreeza, said last Friday in the press forum at the mall that the first three floors will be allotted for the retail establishments. The remaining floors will be used for offices and call center operations.

“The BPO tower is intended to provide more spaces for the retail establishments and allot spaces for BPO offices,” he said, adding that top foreign brands are targeted to be located in the seven-storey building.

The tower is currently being constructed in front of Redemptorist Church. Two bridge ways will be established to connect the tower to the Abreeza Mall. About 4,000 square meters are provided for the retail establishments.

Food stalls will be also placed in the BPO building.

Escano said the BPO tower is needed as the Abreeza Mall has now a slim rental space for the potential retail establishments that wanted to locate inside the mall. The 50,000 square meter-mall is currently 95% filled up with stores like Starbucks, Payless and Gap.

“By next month, stores like Puma and Billabong will be opening,” he said. Belo, a facial and non-evasive clinic of Belo Medical Group, also eyed to open its store by September this year.

The BPO tower is part of the expansion within the mixed-used Abreeza project. A 26-storey Abreeza Residences of Alveo Land Condominium and Kukun Hotel are also being constructed within the vicinity.

The Abreeza project is a result of the joint venture between Ayala Land Inc. and Anflo Management and Investment Corp. and Mindanao Motors Corp.

‘Tunog, Tan-aw, Takam' Fair opens at NCCC Mall
By Antonio L. Colina IV
Sunday, March 11, 2012

THE NCCC Mall Davao formally opened Saturday the "Tunog, Tan-aw, Takam" Fair, a nine-day event that showcases the city's different desired establishments.
Rio Linda Rendon, the mall's assistant manager, spearheaded the opening of the bazaar as their way of celebrating the 75th Araw ng Dabaw this month.

With the activity, Rendon said they wanted to bring in the city's different establishments in just one area so that it will be easier for tourists to know its foods, local destinations, as well as the culture in time of the celebration.
She said this is the first time they held such an event with a theme.
"We put it in everything here this time," Rendon said.
Rendon pointed out that theirs is different from other trade fairs as they focus not on ornamental plants but rather on foods, local artists, and destinations.
"The tourists can eat fresh fruits such as durian right here. So, they will not have to go around the city just to have something to eat," she said.
She added that local artist Bong Espinosa will exhibit his paintings during the fair.
A total of 18 participating establishments had already displayed its products at the mall's Kadayawan Hall as of Sunday.

Reasons Why I’m Still in Davao After 32 Years

Thirty two years may not seem long for people who have stayed in Davao for more than 5 decades (my parents and many of my aunt/uncles, for example), but being in a generation when most of its members are leaving the country to start a new life abroad or to find greener pastures in a different land, I often find myself answering other people’s questions on why I chose to stay in Davao.

It’s not that I have never left Davao. I spent some time in Makati, Digos and North Cotabato for work, and had the chance to see other cities and other countries on well-deserved vacations. I have enjoyed my stay in every city I have visited and I sorely miss some of them until now, but I always feel I am only visiting.

Also, I have several family members and close friends now working or living abroad, and I would not deny that I have, in many occasions, considered leaving too. But every after careful thought and reflection, I still feel that this is where I’m supposed to be; this is where I want to be. This is home.

So, why Davao? Allow me to break my (most significant) reasons down to a few main categories.

Davao's top tourist attraction
By Henrylito D. Tacio
Monday, March 12, 2012

"ENDOWED with a variety of picturesque landscapes, its topography dazzles: Fruit plantations and orchid farms mantle volcano-fed hills and valleys. Virgin forests nurture rare wildlife. Coral islands lie on mirror flat water. And the country’s highest peak magnificently lords over the hinterland."

That's how the Department of Tourism describes Davao City, one of the country’s largest in terms of land area. With a total land area of 2,443.61 square kilometers, Davao City is 7.8 times the size of Cebu and three times that of the entire Metro Manila. Puerto Princesa, with a total land area of 2,381 square kilometers, comes second.

Davao City evokes in one's mind delectable fruits (the pungent durian, antioxidants-laden mangosteen, sweet seedless pomelo, and tasty banana), fine beaches (Samal Island is just five minutes away by boat), and religious sites (historic San Pedro Cathedral and the Shrine of the Holy Infant Jesus of Prague).

But Davao is also known for its natural attractions in its countryside. Beautifully landscaped resorts, botanical gardens and weekend retreats attract not only locals but as well as tourists who want to experience the natural wonders of Davao.

SaveMore -- SM's mini mall -- to open in time for Araw Ng Dabaw
by Mindanao Insider on Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at 9:47am ·

A neighborhood store operated under SM Food and Retail Group will open its P60-million SaveMore Store here on March 15, a day before Davao City celebrates its 75th Araw ng Dabaw.

Allan Flores, SaveMore operations manager, said the Davao store will be leveled up to a mini-mall towards the end of the year, making it the first of its kind in the Philippines.

Located in Bangkal District, the store serves Davao residents in the southern part where most subdivisions and other residential areas are located.

SaveMore is constructed in the area where the Makro Store is located. The new building occupies some 2,500-square-meter area.

He said the Makro Store will be converted into a centralized warehouse especially with the opening of SM City Lanang and SM City General Santos City.

The new store employs over 200 workers.

Meanwhile, Flores said they aim to operate 100 SaveMore stores around the country by the end of 2012.

Three SaveMore Stores are now operating in Cagayan de Oro.

He said they plan to open another store in Davao City and one in General Santos City next year.

kinsa may dili motuo nga nabaniug naman sa tibuok pilipinas nga ang davao city ang pinakadako nga dakbayan in terms of land area which is 5.6 times larger than metro cebu but the question lies in the income generated in your big city cannot surpass the income generated in metro cebu.(based on the picture MC includes only cebu, mandaue and mactan island)

I agree, Davao City's as the largest in terms of land area is already a no brainier issue. Maski siguro taga Tawi-Tawi kabalo ana and dili na angay pang tukion but there's a bit of a problem on the highlighted part. Patapos ra kaayo. Too many factors to mention but of course, we cannot dwell on those factors forever. Maybe Davao, daghan ag bugas ang kaunon ayaw lang storya ug patapos.

kinsa may dili motuo nga nabaniug naman sa tibuok pilipinas nga ang davao city ang pinakadako nga dakbayan in terms of land area which is 5.6 times larger than metro cebu but the question lies in the income generated in your big city cannot surpass the income generated in metro cebu.(based on the picture MC includes only cebu, mandaue and mactan island)

It is true indeed. To be fair with that pic, that was just cropped out from the greater context of Davao City. I think that is part of the Araw ng Dabaw booth that you will find in the malls citywide. The city government provided a deeper, broader, historical, economic, ethnic, geographical, ecological and other info about the city, for the benefit of both the residents and visitors. That cropped part of the display poster only spoke of how vast is Davao City in land area compared to Metro Manila & Metro Cebu, which are the only 2 metros that Metro Davao is always compared to. Economically, Metro Cebu as ahead of Metro Davao is a no-brainier issue. I'm sure that info is also shown in the info. :)

with the yellows combined, the differenec in size is not far from orange. nearly the same. but how much is the income of metro cebu vs metro manila by comparison

it is not easy for mindanao to survive in the competition. level of playing field is not even.

Davao City is a self-sufficient city, imo, tungod sa iyang kadak-on.

Davao is still top choice for BPOs

DAVAO CITY has maintained its lead as an attraction for the business processing outsourcing (BPO) sector in 2011, ..., according to a report released yesterday.

Davao was followed by Sta. Rosa, Bacolod, Iloilo, Metro Cavite, Lipa, Cagayan de Oro, Malolos, Baguio and Dumaguete, which maintained their positions in the 2010 list.

Criteria are talent penetration with 40%, infrastructure 30%, cost, such as wages and power rates, and local business environment 20%.

BPO industry eyes 'next wave' cities for expansion
By Lois Calderon, ABS-CBN News Channel

The government agrees, saying areas away from Manila are becoming increasingly attractive to foreign BPO investors, given rising labor costs in Manila and other key Asian cities.

A joint study by the Business Processing Association of the Philippines and the Department of Science and Technology showed Davao City, Sta. Rosa in Laguna and Bacolod City as the top 3 BPO locations among 34 domestic locations.

The study identified the 10 "Next Wave BPO cities" as follows:

1. Davao City
2. Sta. Rosa, Laguna
3. Bacolod
4. Iloilo
5. Metro Cavite
6. Lipa, Batangas
7. Cagayan de Oro
8. Malolos, Bulacan
9. Baguio City
10. Dumaguete, Negros Oriental

Yellow Fin Lanang branch opens
Thursday, March 15, 2012

THE famous Yellow Fin Seafood and Restaurant, a resto known for its seafood and Filipino dishes, opened its Lanang branch last March 8.
No less than Davao City Vice Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte graced the blessing and inauguration ceremonies of the Yellow Fin Lanang branch, which is located just in front of the SM Lanang.
The resto's owner, Ken Angeles, said they hope to serve the people of Davao City better with the opening of the Lanang branch.
Angeles said some of their customers are located in Lanang area. Now, they won't have to travel that far to savor Yellow Fin's mouth-watering cuisines.

for me di naman talaga kailangan na dapat pantayan ng Davao ang no. of highrises ng ibang cities para sabihin di pa ka level, its unfair kasi kung yan lang ang basehan, eh meron naman tayo nito na wala sila:cheers:

Maxima Aquafun: Summer getaway in the south
By Ayunan Gunting (The Philippine Star) Updated March 18, 2012 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - I’ve gone to a lot of places for many years now. Many of these places I’ve traveled to are in Mindanao — from Lanao del Sur to Tawi-Tawi. But no other place has ever captured my heart like Davao.

I’ve always loved the beautiful city of Davao. I am charmed by its historical landmarks, the magnificence of its island getaways and its breath-taking beaches and mountain resorts. Davao City also boasts of loving and accommodating people whom I work with whenever I’m there visiting.

I quickly packed up, and flew right to the city. Not far away from where I landed, at Pearl Farm dock in Sasa, Davao City, we took a boat ride that led to San Jose Wall, Samal. The 30-minute ride, which showed us a fascinating scenery of the paradise that is Davao, directed us to the sight of the gorgeous Maxima Aquafun.

Among Maxima’s main attractions was the giant water slide. The slide is made of canvas material, which measured about 40 meters long and a meter wide. Getting down the slide leads you right to the depths of the sea.

Maxima also boasts of its Eagle View Canopy Walk, where guests can amble along on a hanging bridge. The walk offered a great view of the resort, and the blue waters of the Davao Gulf.

High power rates may hobble new BPO sites development

The report listed Davao City as zooming past Metro Laguna, Metro Cavite and Iloilo City, to the top rank from No. 4 in 2009, the year the first report was released. Davao City scored 91 percent, up nearly 10 percent from its 2009 score of 80.40, ...

However, Davao City is one of the two cities with the lowest monthly average power rate (MAPR) of P5,380, according to the report published by the Business Processing Association Philippines (BPAP).

Currently, there are 88 locators in the top 10 cities, with Davao City having the highest number at 22 companies.

Globe network to completely shift to 3G, 4G technology

MANILA, Philippines—Ayala-led Globe Telecom Inc. has launched a pilot program to replace all old mobile network equipment in Davao City with new third and fourth generation (3G and 4G) technology.
The initiative, dubbed as the “Davao Pilot Project,” is part of Globe’s nationwide network modernization worth $790 million. Life Is Here!

March 16, 2012 By slthemin (http://www.themindanaojournal.com/author/slthemin/)
By S. C. Ledesma Jr.
The new catchphrase, “Life is here”, best describes the vibrant business and urban and rural lifestyle in Davao City. This southern gateway of the country sustains the lead as the growth center of the Mindanao. Its phenomenal development has drawn billions of pesos in fresh investments each year. The prime beckon is the prevailing peace and order condition and the healthy business climate as well as its lifestyle. For a city that went through a nightmarish reign of communist insurgents, the insanity and tyranny of terrorists operatives, the savagery of organized syndicates that range from kidnap-for-ransom, robbery with manslaughter, illegal drug manufacturing, distribution and pushing the yearning for peace and orderliness has become eternally engrained in the consciousness of Dabawenyos.

kinsa may dili motuo nga nabaniug naman sa tibuok pilipinas nga ang davao city ang pinakadako nga dakbayan in terms of land area which is 5.6 times larger than metro cebu but the question lies in the income generated in your big city cannot surpass the income generated in metro cebu.(based on the picture MC includes only cebu, mandaue and mactan island)

grabe imagine kung tibuok land area sa davao is urban(impossible to happen because some part of mt apo is under davao city and its not good to our environment) kung taga paquibato ka muadto kag bajada kailangan na jud nimo mag helicopter..ok lang kay naa may helipad ang aeon.

with the yellows combined, the differenec in size is not far from orange. nearly the same. but how much is the income of metro cebu vs metro manila by comparison

it is not easy for mindanao to survive in the competition. level of playing field is not even.

corrected by sir.

before na lang unta i-compare ang income ng davao sa cebu,

let me rephase daw:
"but the question lies in the income generated in your city still cannot and will never surpass the income generated in metro manila.."

fair enough?
