Don't judge the SSC'er by its avatar and username. That's all I can say.
You're quick to judge without knowing the real person behind the username and avatar.
I really don't like it. Next time be careful with your words.
When I get angry, it will be really ugly. You may never like me but this is me, easily offended, I may forgive you but I'll never forget the mess you've done.

Neda: Poverty incidence in Davao decreases in 2011

By Antonio L. Colina IV

THE National Economic Development Authority (Neda) in Davao announced Friday that the region is the only one in the entire Mindanao that posted a decrease in poverty incidence by 0.6 percent in 2011.

Speaking at Friday’s Kapehan sa PIA, Bonifacio Uy, assistant regional director of Neda-Davao, said the entire Davao Region did not suffer much from poverty compared to other regions in Mindanao, placing the entire region on the eighth spot among all the regions in the country with a recorded poverty incidence last year.

Uy attributed this to the good business climate in the region and the pouring in of more investments that generated more jobs.

"The World Bank cited Davao being good for the business start-ups, placing second in the country," Lim said.

Daughter of Davao poised to make political history in South Korea

http://www3.picturepush.com/photo/a/7878196/220/7878196.jpg (http://picturepush.com/public/7878196)

The online news portal of TV5

A Davao native who emigrated to South Korea may soon become that country’s first foreign-born lawmaker, Korea’s Ambassador to the Philippines Hye Min Lee said on Saturday.

Ambassador Lee, speaking with reporters at the sides of an airport send-off to Seoul for Vice President Jejomar Binay, said a Filipina-Korean naturalized citizen – 35-year-old TV personality Jasmine Lee - is widely expected to make political history this summer.

Ms. Lee is now a well-known television host, actress and social worker in South Korea, recognized for her advocacies in support of migrant women.

Ambassador Lee said that “the Davao City native Jasmine Lee was included on the party list for the governing party, so her number is very safe, and it is expected that she will become the first foreign-born Korean that will be elected…to sit in the national assembly in May.”

Lee was strongly endorsed by Representative Park Geun-hye, interim leader of the Grand National Party, the ambassador noted.

Ms. Lee organized the first volunteer group for migrant women in South Korea - the Waterdrop foundation - and has become a well-known spokesperson for migrant women. She has been widely quoted as saying: "Policies may change my life, but if politics can change the policy, then it is very important who is in charge of the politics." Ms. Lee has said she "wants a Republic of Korea where children of a migrant woman can play together with native Korean children without any constraints".

Ambassador Lee spoke of Ms. Lee’s political trajectory as he saw a delegation headed by Vice President Binay off at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport. Binay left Saturday for the 2nd Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul, onboard a Philippine Airlines flight.

Binay said he was aware of the phenomenon of Jasmine Lee.

Chosun.com, a South Korean news site, profiled the rise of Lee.

She migrated to Korea in 1995 after marrying a Korean sailor, Lee Dongho. Little less than a year earlier, she was studying medicine, while also helping her parents in minding their family store. It was while she tended to the store that her future husband walked in, Ms. Lee said, and was smitten. He kept returning for different odd items, until he finally introduced himself, and their relationship developed from there.

They were married within a year of their first meeting, and when she soon got pregnant and gave birth in Korea, their new family was set to lay down roots in her husband’s homeland. It was there, she acknowledged, that she had spent her entire adult life. When her husband died in 2010 after “trying to rescue his daughter from drowning in a stream”, Chosun.com said, Lee locked herself in a room for a month. "Then I saw children getting ready to go back to school and realized I had to live."

By then, she already had quite a lot of people in Korea rooting for her recovery. Lee had established herself as an expert and advocate on migrant issues, frequently appearing on television as a commentator and analyst. In 2010, she appeared in the Korean movie “Secret Reunion.” For promoting multiculturalism in South Korea, Lee received the Korea Image Millstone Award from the Corea Image Communication Institute (CICI).

Read more about Jasmine Lee here. She was also profiled by The Korea Times here. With a report from Eric Apolonio, InterAksyon.com

Ask lang ha, is that 500 for the 12 passengers na? So irregardless of the number of passengers (i.e., kahit 1 lang), the fare remains at 500 per 5 km..tama ba?

Globe's $700-M upgrade kicks off in Davao City

DAVAO CITY, Philippines - Globe Telecom's $700 million nationwide network upgrade has formally kicked off in Davao City.

Peter Bithos, head of consumer division at Globe Telecom, announced the start of the network upgrade in this city in the presence of Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and other local officials during a press conference at the Marco Polo hotel.

Bithos said Globe's 4G mobile network rollout promises to deliver internet downloading speeds of about 6mbps (megabit per second) using broadband and mobile data on smartphone dongles.

The executive likened the network upgrade to the railroad developments in the past connecting people via transportation to towns, cities, schools, homes and businesses.

"We'll be rolling out 10,000 kilometers of fiber around the country. And that stretch is like from Manila to Australia," Bithos said. "Our goal is for each Filipino to have 3G."

Bithos added that Globe's business is growing 20 percent faster in Davao City.

Meanhwile, Duterte said that with the telecommunications development they expect the city to improve on its businesses, education and even employment since it can become an ideal destination of locators from the business process outsourcing sectors abroad.

Only recently, no less than the Globe's president and chief executive officer Ernest Cu, assured that the network change-out to 4G will have no adverse impact on subscribers using older technology devices such as 2G mobile devices that uses mostly basic SMS and voice services.

More stores to open at Abreeza in 1st half

MORE concept stores are up for opening at the Ayala-owned Abreeza Mall during the first half of this year even as it encourages homegrown entrepreneurs to also put up their shops at the mall.
"We are very excited to provide Dabawenyos with new experience in fool and fashion," Luigi Escaño said in Monday’s press briefing at Cafe Laguna at the ground floor of the Abreeza Mall.

Set to open at the mall are retail and food stores that will address the "needs and wants" of the Dabawenyos.

"Because we are building the Abreeza community here, we have to provide what have not been provided to Dabawenyos," Maria Rowena Tomeldan, Ayala Land Inc. vice president and head for operations and support services.

She added that Ayala is committed "to provide the needs and wants of the community it builds," she said.

"Binubuo na namin ang Abreeza community dito a Davao. And while we bring the firsts here, we also provide the best for Dabawenyos," Tomeldan said, referring to several concept stores and food outlets that for the first time have penetrated the Davao market.

Set to open this week is Mad Hatter at the mall's third level, which specializes in crepes.

In April, Marks and Spencer will open its first store, and one of the biggest in the country, in April. It is located at the ground floor of the mall.

In May, another food outlet, Sbarro, will also open its second store in Davao City, while Dulcinea, a bakeshop, is also set for opening during the same month.

Army Navy, which specializes in burgers and burrito will also open in May.

Popular doughnut maker, the Crispy Creme, is also set to open its first store in Mindanao, at Abreeza Mall, within the year.

Mall management has also encouraged homegrown brands to take advantage of the mall's own initiative to assist them.

"We want them to appreciate the Abreeza experience," Tomeldan said.

At present, more than 10 percent of the mall tenants are homegrown brands.

Tomeldan also announced that Ayala Land will soon launch the posh Abreeza Residences, a 26-storey condominium project which is also part of Abreeza, the P5 billion, 10 hectare mixed-use development that Ayala Land is developing in partnership with Floirendo-owned Anflo Management and Investment Corp. through the Accendo Commercial Corp.

The area will house a state-of-the-art business process outsourcing (BPO) facility, a businessman's hotel called The Cocoon and the Abreeza Mall which now hosts a superior mix of over 300 merchandise brands.

The mall is now 95 percent occupied, Escano said. By the first quarter of 2013, Tomeldan said, they will launch the eight-story, 186-room Cocoon Hotel, which is now in its construction stage.

That makes the page look-sound-feel cheesy and worse, unreliable. If someone knows someone who is from Wikipedia, for god's sake please tell them to revise it and have its quality checked.:ohno:

Finally, someone who is receptive to a criticism. I don't mean to offend but that's what a Davaoeno should do, protect the identity of the city. Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia and visited by people all over the world to get accurate information and quick facts. But this doesn't mean that we have to make our Wikipedia page turn into a "tourism brochure" or a thread, it makes Davao look precocious. Sorry but that's the way i see it. We are still a young city, so what's the hurry? Good that Davao was chosen to be among the fastest growing urban areas in the world. I'm not an English major but no offense, the grammatical structure and technicalities of the article is questionable.:bash:

He said that while Mindanao is experiencing eight to 10 hours of blackouts, power shortage has not been an issue in Luzon and Visayas. He also said that the power shortage in the southern Philippines will not affect the economy since there are only a few investments in the region.

"Walang nag-iinvest sa Mindanao. Sa Luzon at Visayas wala namang problema," Almendras said.

Marching orders ba ni President ang "noynoying? "

In reading the article, I didnt think Almendras meant that no one was investing in Mindanao, per se. I think he was referring to the fact there are no NEW investments in Energy in Mindanao. We all know that the AEV and Alsons are investing in hydro and coal energy plants for SoMin but those are clearly just for the SoMin region but shortfall that needs to be addressed is for ALL of Mindanao. Hindi naman puwede na ang government mismo ang mag-invest. Privatized na ang sector na 'yan and has been for years. What the government can do is ENABLE more investments in Energy in Mindanao by offering incentives. And maybe Almendras should resign for not being creative in coming up with ideas to ENABLE such investments in our island. IMHO.

He said that while Mindanao is experiencing eight to 10 hours of blackouts, power shortage has not been an issue in Luzon and Visayas. He also said that the power shortage in the southern Philippines will not affect the economy since there are only a few investments in the region.

WWF picks Davao City as Earth Hour site in Mindanao

THURSDAY, 29 MARCH 2012 18:48 PTV.PH

DAVAO CITY – The World Wide Fund (WWF) has picked Davao City as Earth Hour site in Mindanao at 8:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. on March 31.

Greg Yan, WWF-Philippines Earth Hour communications head, said SM City Davao will be the main switch-off site for Mindanao with WWF–Philippine National Ambassador Marc Nelson to host the switch-off.

He said Davao City is one of the three cities picked by WWF as switch-off sites on Saturday. The other cities are Makati and Cebu.

WWF is the world’s largest and most experienced conservation organization operating in over 100 countries.
Yan said as a three-time Earth Hour champion and an official Earth Hour “Hero Country” the world will look on the Philippines for its Earth Hour on March 31 when the world celebrates this year’s Earth Hour.
“The world will be watching us for Earth Hour,” he said.
The Philippines became the top Earth Hour country in terms of town and city participation with 647 Philippine towns and cities to have joined in 2009. It regained its title in 2010 with 1,076 Philippine towns and cities participated and a record breaking 1,661 participation in 2011, making the country as three-time Earth Hour champion.
Yan said the one-hour Davao City Earth Hour is in collaboration with SM Supermalls, the Green Alliance and the City Government. The switch-off at SM Davao will feature a Kadayawan-themed parade around the mall’s vicinities at 6 p.m. as black light fire dancers will woo the crowd with specialized routines in a street party once the city plunges into darkness at 8:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. The theme is in consonance with WWF’s aim to highlight the heritage of Filipinos during this year’s switch-off.
“The world will be watching us for Earth Hour,” he said.
Yan said WWF aims to indulge in a radical change in this year’s earth hour from previous years’ earth hour observance by urging the world to commit to do something to save planet earth.
This year’s 60+ Earth Hour logo of WWF symbolizes what the people around the world could do to save mother earth beyond 60 minutes or one hour. Alongside with this is also one’s pledge of “I will, if you will” or a personal dare with the world by asking everyone what are you willing to do to save the planet.
Lynette Lopez, SM Davao mall manager, said they are expecting many participants on this year’s earth hour after the observance became global in 2008.
In the past four years, various sectors including schools, business establishments, government institutions, etc. and numerous households joined the earth hour by switching off lights for an hour.
In a statement, Earth Hour founder and executive director Andy Ridley said that Earth Hour observance last year reached 1.8 billion people in 135 countries across the planet.
Ridley will celebrate Earth Hour 2012 in the Philippines being rewarded as “Hero Country” for Earth Hour.
In the 2009 Earth Hour observance in the Philippines, 10 million Filipinos saved at least 611 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity, WWF data showed. (PNA)

...In the Philippines, all government agencies and local government units will participate in the annual Earth Hour campaign later today, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.

In a memorandum order, Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr. said there will be three simultaneous switch-off ceremonies in the cities of Makati, Cebu and Davao.

Ochoa also urged public servants nationwide to take an active role in the global campaign as he called on Filipinos to make a long-term commitment to environmental preservation.

..Bobby Orig, DLPC executive vice-president said that only two areas in Mindanao are not experiencing rotational brownouts and these are the cities of Cotabato and Davao. He attributes these to the standby power of its utility firms.

..DLPC’s franchise areas include the City of Davao plus the nearby city of Panabo and the towns of Carmen, Braulio Dujali and Santo Tomas in Davao del Norte.

Sabagay, prior to the 1980's Davao City had only the Bajada Diesel plant to rely on... and it became a back up only when the Ma. Cristina-Agus-Pulangi hydro electric lines finally reached the Davao region (well i believe the last region to receive it...) So thanks to the Bajada Diesel plant, the City is still free from rotating brown outs..however, it won't be long before, the Mindanao Grid will not be able to handle the electricity requirements of Mindanao.

DLPC says Davao power still enough

THE Davao Light and Power Company (DLPC) said it still has enough embedded power to assure its consumers of continuous power in its franchise areas.
Bobby Orig, DLPC executive vice president, said only two areas in Mindanao are not experiencing rotational brownouts and these are the cities of Cotabato and Davao. He attributes these to the standby power of its utility firms.

Orig said the 42-megawatt deficiency from NPC and PSALM can still be covered from embedded power hence there is still no need to implement rotational brownouts.

DLPC's franchise areas include the City of Davao plus the nearby city of Panabo and the towns of Carmen, Braulio Dujali and Santo Tomas in Davao del Norte. (PIA-11/Rudolph Ian G. Alama)

Published in the Sun.Star Davao newspaper on April 02, 2012.

You got to ask our national gov't on that as it is only them who have the authority to give clearance.
