Budots

Its a freestyle dancing mixed with fun and amusing dance steps. Proudly Davao made po ang mga songs na budots. "Simple yet deep bass, static sounds, occasional scratching, horns of varying pitches and tempo, DJ spiels throughout, sometimes distorted vocals, looped all over and over make up the "budots" formula. It's like a crossbreed of European techno music and bad hip-hop, added with some nasty attitude"

This dance distinct in davao, mostly by the juveniles.

If there is something in M&S Davao the rest of the 18 stores across the country don’t have, it will be the new features of the M&S shop. “The Davao store will sport a number of firsts- the new UK concept design, the first in the Philippines (tills, fitting room); first store with the new baffled windows; first store with the Tiffany windows; and the first store to have the new mannequin poses not available in the other stores,” shared Lucille.

“The new 1,000 square meter store will offer this season’s latest collections and M&S’ exclusive innovations across women’s wear and menswear, as well as accessories, footwear, sleepwear and lingerie, beauty products, and food and wines,” said Lucille Tolentino, Merchandising Division Manager for M&S, when asked about the store offerings to the Davao shoppers. “The M&S’ popular clothing brands that will be at the store include Autograph – Luxurious, chic and sophisticated, the range embodies understated, international style; M&S Woman and M&S Man – Stylish, dependable but still inspiring, the range brings you the great value clothes you love; Indigo Collection – Soft, pretty and coordinated casual wear, the collection is perfect for women who need easy style for a busy life; North Coast – takes a relaxed approach to life with a casual, authentic and laid back style; and, Blue Harbour – the clean, masculine range offers men considered style, where casual can still be smart,” she added.

Samuel L. Jackson asks for durianABS-CBNnews.com

MANILA, Philippines – Hollywood actor Samuel L. Jackson seems to be a fan of the durian fruit as he was obviously excited about it when he talked to ABS-CBN News during the premiere night of “The Avengers.”

In an interview with ABS-CBN North America Correspondent Yong Chavez, Jackson jokingly asked for durian once he found out that the interview was for a Filipino audience.

“Where are you from, Cebu? Davao? Got any durian on you?” he said in jest.

Durian is a native fruit from Davao province which many people either like or hate due to its smell and taste.

"Done w/ ScarJo, Jeremy Renner, Sam Jackson, Cobie, Mark R interviews! Chris Evans & Hemsworth next. Sam asked if I brought durian for him :)," Chavez said in a tweet over the weekend.

She also tweeted that Renner "smiled and talked about the Philippines as soon as I was intro'd. He had a great time there shooting Bourne. "

Renner was in Manila for several weeks last February shooting the "Bourne Legacy."

Meanwhile, Jackson also talked about his latest role in the much anticipated film.

Jackson will play role of Nick Fury, the leader of "The Avengers."

He also shared the scoop that his character will be back in the next big marvel movie.

“I'm excited to see where Nick will go. I think my next Nick Fury enterprise is 'Captain America 2' so we'll see,” he said.

"The Avengers" is expected to be a worldwide blockbuster. It will be shown in the Philippines beginning April 25 and in the US starting May 4. – Report from Yong Chavez, ABS-CBN North America

Billabong brings surfing lifestyle to Davao

| More |
Saturday, April 21, 2012

"LIFE better in board shorts," or so says those who've heeded the call of the surf. For them, surfing is a way of life and therein lies the appeal of not only the sport but the fashion behind it as well.

No longer bound by the loud (read: Hawaiian shirts) and semi-derelict look, today's surf style revolves around the concepts of form and fashion. This means the look is still largely made up of equal parts comfort and utilitarian ease, but with a generous dash of style that can easily go from the beach to the streets.

Have something to report? Tell us in text, photos or videos.

This fusion of understated functionality and style is what defines Billabong. It has everything from standout bikinis to casual tops, jeans and hoodies; to highlight collections such as the Platinum X Series (performance board shorts with quad-stretch and laser seam technology); to clothing inspired by icons such as Bob Marley, Dave Rastovich and Andy Davis.

"Billabong embraces the lifestyle identified with its collections by offering art-driven designs and even organic, eco-friendly lines," said Freddy Gonzalez, president of Freesurf Inc., the exclusive distributor of Billabong in the Philippines.

Case in point is Billabong's Recycler Series, a board shorts line made out of recycled PET bottles. Since starting in 2007, an estimated 38 million bottles have been used in Billabong's recycled board shorts program.

Billabong's humble beginnings started in 1973 when Australian Gordon S. Merchant sold hand-cut surfing shorts in small shops around the beach. Today, Billabong is one of the world's top youth culture brands with it sold in many countries from North America, Australia, Europe, South Africa, South America, Brazil and Asia. Here in the Philippines, one can experience the unique lifestyle offered by Billabong as one of the flagship stores of Freesurf Inc.

As this world-renowned brand continues its expansion into key cities in the Philippines, Billabong’s recent opening in Davao certainly gives shoppers something to be excited about. Located at Abreeza Mall, the Billabong store is the perfect place to visit for anybody who lives by the laid-back lifestyle the brand embodies.

"It's almost a cliché to say that surfing is a way of life but it really is. Everything from the way you see things, to the habits you have, and down to the clothes you wear reflect the surf lifestyle. After all, life is definitely better in board shorts," Gonzalez said.

Not only about first class resorts, exotic island getaway, and great outdoors,

It is your rare opportunity to come and see in flesh, the national symbols of the Philippines that you have only seen in pictures in your life:

The Philippines eagle – National bird of the Philippines

Vanda Sanderiana – National flower of the Philippines

Glimpse of Mt Apo - the highest mountain peak of the Philippines lording over the southern sky on a clear sunny day

A close encounter with the oldest and biggest crocodile ever known to the Philippines - the 19 feet “pangil"

The preferred place to settle and retire in the Philippines

Mindanao’s first industrial park now ready for locators

DAVAO CITY — The First Mindanao Industrial Park (FMIP), a 20-hectare premier business and industrial hub of Ciudades of the Lapanday Properties, Philippines in Buhangin District in Davao City is ready to accommodate locators.

FMIP is located within the 200-hectare Ciudades, a master planned township development which is once a banana plantation of Lapanday.

The FMIP development plan includes spacious road networks designed to offer maximum maneuverability for large vehicles.
Within FMIP are mixed-use areas, which include the Business-Industrial-Residential Estate (BIRE) where business, industrial, and residential uses are merged and organized into a master planned and green environment with 84 lots.

Lots in the BIRE District have a multi-use feature or can be used for commercial, production, manufacturing, office, residential, and warehousing purposes.
Typical lot sizes are at a minimum of 800 square meters, and a maximum of 2,700 square meters.
The business hub will have a centralized sewerage facility and concreted road networks with appropriate lighting, directional signs, pedestrian lanes, and planting strips. A centralized water system will also be put in place and more power substations will be constructed to ensure continuous power supply from the Davao Light and Power Company.
The Lapanday group also envisions to respond to Davao City’s evolving lifestyle. Thus, it decided to establish El Centro, the first commercial park concept in Davao besides FMIP.
El Centro will serve as a convergence point for commercial, institutional, leisure, sports, and recreational requirements of Ciudades township.
It is at El Centro where healthy living is being promoted, dining destinations, local tourism, and a balanced environment. El Centro will also offer lots ideal for business, institutional or recreational use. (PNA)

Sunglass Jose Rizal was a major hit among the youth. It has become a statement that it is cool to be patriotic. Team Manila has indeed made being nationalistic very fashionable.

Team Manila opens at SM Davao The Annex. Founded in 2001 by college friends Jowee Alviar and Mon Punzalan, the brand has strived to inspire and elevate the Filipino through art and creativity. Believing that graphic design is an agent of change, the brand inspires excellence, innovation, passion, nationalism, teamwork and optimism among the Filipino youth.

Known for designs with a uniquely Filipino influence, Team Manila also extended their line of work to Graphic Designed Lifestyle, a lifestyle store selling t-shirts, bags and accessories with designs inspired by Filipino culture.

Pepper Lunch (ペッパーランチ Peppaa-ranchi) is a "fast-steak" restaurant concept that originated in Japan in 1994.
It was created by Japanese chef and inventor, Mr. Kunio Ichinose who wanted to serve quality, fast food without the need to train a chef for years.
At Pepper Lunch diners get to cook their own food over a patented electromagnetic plate that is heated up to 260 degrees Celsius within one minute.

Choice cuts of beef, chicken, pork and salmon are served with rice and vegetables for guests to cook and season using flavors of teriyaki, onion sauce, honey brown sauce (Amakuchi) or garlic soy sauce (Karakuchi)—and that dash of freshly ground pepper to give you that delicious, flavor-filled meal.

Now there are over 200 Pepper Lunch outlets in Japan and all over Asia, including South Korea, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines.

We opened our first outlet on May 16, 2008 at the Power Plant mall. We have opened several more restaurants after that, please see our "Locations" for the latest store!

Damosa to spend P200-M for first housing project: exec

http://www.mindanaotimes.net/damosa-to-spend-p200-m-for-first-housing-project-exec/

The Damosa Land Inc., the property development subsidiary of the Floirendo group, is investing about P200 million for the development of its first residential subdivision, a seven-hectare property located just about five minutes from its headquarters.

Ricardo R. Floirendo, Damosa Land senior vice president, said the project is the initial foray of the company into residential project and that this will be followed by other projects in key areas in the city as well as the nearby Panabo City in Davao del Norte.

Floirendo said aside from this project, the company will also develop its properties for housing projects in Sasa, Panacan and Toril.

But the next project, he said, will be the 50-hectare lot in Panabo City, although he did not mention when the project will start as “everything is still on the drawing board.”

Panabo City is special to the Floirendo family considering that it is near where its biggest banana farm, the Tagum Agricultural Development Corp. is located.

The company, said Floirendo, has started developing its lands that it has banked because “we have already considered the market as mature for projects like this.”

On the project at present, the Fairlane which is named after the Fairlane, the home estate of the late Henry Ford, founder of the Ford Motor Co. Incidentally, Damosa, which used to be the Davao Motors Sales, was a dealer of Ford cars before it eventually grew to become one of the biggest companies in this part of the country.

^^tama ka we have naman International Port dito kaso yun nga dumadaan parin sa manila harbour para sa export nila kaya medjo malaki pa ang gagastusin, if im not mistaken may nag propose na direct shipping na ang mangyayari from Zamboanga port hindi na dumadaan sa manila pa...

-Yun spanish sardines dito yes lami sya kahit ako prefer ko siya than other canned goods and take note mura pa and good quality pa, and guys try niyo madami pang classe ng Canned sardines flavor aside sa spanish sardines at sa karaniwang tomato sauce flavor and hot sauce flavor..

theres tagum city to host for davao city. davao city is the gateway to the provinces so they all have the chance to tour around davao city along their way. having said that, the city of davao scored very low in the aspect of sports program for the lack of sports facilities.

Well, currently the City does not have the resources for this, although there was already a drafted plan. Do you know that it is very expensive to maintain sports complexes? Unless the city finds money for this with the help of UP Mindanao... i they will just put the whole project in the back burner for the meantime....

I think the priority for now is basic infra like drainage/flood control, road asphalt overlay, IS relocation and other more pressing problems.
Regarding sa Peace and Order, maintenance nalang na and there's always an allocated budget for it otherwise unsaon nalang nang 911 kung walay budget?
Kung akala mo peace and order lang palagi pina priority ng LGU, do you think Davao people will be contented stuck in the 90's infras? Unsa man gusto ninyo ma-una, sports complex or kanang mga proyekto na daghan maka benepisyo na mga Davawenyo? Di man siguro mo abot ang Davao sa in-ani kung atuang LGU nagpataka lang ug prioritize.

Precisely. it is a matter of prioritization. the Sports Complex in Tubod by the way is made not by Tubod town but Lanao del Norte provincial government. Davao City by the way has been independent of Davao del Sur ever since the splitting of the Davao Province into three (subsequently 4) provinces. The focus perhaps of the city government (as opposed to the provincial government) is still the welfare of the people in terms of peace and order, infrastructure, investments... Kung very stable na lahat (not necessarily the peace and order of the city only but also that of the whole region) siguro, then the city would plunk money into the proposed sports complex.

Yup everyone is dreaming of a sports complex and hopefully the city will get one.

First Delsey store in Philippines opens in Davao (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/business/2012/04/29/first-delsey-store-philippines-opens-davao-218904)

FRENCH manufacturer Delsey opened its first store in the Philippines, not in the nation's capital, but right in Davao City.

The store, which opened on April 26, is located at the ground floor of SM City Davao Annex, touted at the hippest place to shop in the city.

"We are bullish in the economy of Davao. The city is fast developing and we are confident on the potential of the market. Plus SM City is very supportive that's why we put Delsey's first store here," Johanns Tan, assistant vice president of Primer Group of Companies, said at the store's opening.

Primer Group, a consortium mainly engaged in retail and distribution of world's top customers brands and products, is the exclusive distributor of Delsey products in the Philippines.

Also present during the store opening was Freddie Loke, regional sales manager for Delsey Asia.

Based on their study, Tan said, Delsey is the fastest growing luggage brand in the country today barely three years after it was introduced in the Philippine market.

Delsey products are first offered in Metro Manila in 2009 with products available at The Travel Club, Duty Free Philippines, SM shopping malls, Robinson’s, Landmark and other leading department stores. These products were later made available nationwide.

"Today, Delsey has its own home here at SM City Davao," Tan said.

Tan said Dabawenyos have started to patronize Delsey products based on brand's sales performance in the city's leading department stores.

"We are doing very well in terms of sales. The brand fares well in the market as against our top competitor," he said, referring to another international brand Samsonite.

"We are now number two in the market, but we are growing faster than any other brand," he added.

Since 1946, Delsey has been setting the industry standard, not just with fashionable creations true to the brand's French heritage, but also with the durability and innovation of their products.

And timed for the opening, Delsey launched its newest product lines -- the U-lite and Helium, touted as the lightest luggage on earth, with the carry-on bag weighing just 2.3 kilograms.

"These products are made available in limited quantities exclusively in this boutique," Tan told reporters during the store opening.

He said these new line of products are Delsey's newest innovation that addresses the market demand for "strength, light and security" of their luggage.

To prove this, Tan hit a Helium luggage with a hammer several times and it never damaged the item.

"With Delsey products, you really have a worry-less travel," Tan has assured.

Just like other Delsey items, the U-lite and Helium collections also feature the Zip Securi Tech system. Pre-orders for these limited-quantity collections will be made available to interested shoppers.

Delsey has introduced the Zip Securi Tech system which is a one-of-a-kind invention featuring a tamper-free zipper.

"No other luggage brand carries the same kind of technology," Tan said.

He said Delsey luggage products all have an unmatchable and superb anti-theft system and despite a thief's best efforts, these bags will go unopened and safe during transport and travel.

Davao to host S&R Price Club’s sixth store

MONDAY, 30 APRIL 2012 19:33 MANUEL T. CAYON / CORRESPONDENT

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/419737_332608933457302_328845310500331_1004143_550036998_n.jpg

DAVAO CITY—Membership shopping entity S&R Price Club Inc. has begun issuing membership cards here and is now hiring staff for its sixth store in the country, and the first in Mindanao.

Velinda Funelas, marketing officer at S&R, told the BusinessMirror on Friday that the store is expected to open its doors in November, situated at the corner lot on Maa Road and MacArthur Highway, and fronting a shopping mall.

Hiring is expected to be completed in May for the Davao City crew, consisting of the management team on human resources, accounting and administration, and the sales force. It will also begin issuing membership cards, priced at P700 for individual members, and P900 for commercial businesses.

”“We are upbeat on Davao City. It’s one of the fast-growing metropolises in the country and it is listed in the 100 fast-growing cities in the world,” she added. “We take off from that listing, and you can see around that indeed, growth is all around.

S&R President Anthony Sy paid a courtesy call at the office of City Mayor Sara Duterte in late February, and told the mayor that “we would like to be the first movers here because of the great economic indicators of the city”.

He also assured that the store usually tap the top local suppliers “for some of the items that we need.”

In hiring its personnel, he also said “we bring about only six to 10 of our people and hire the rest in the area where we operate.”

He also told the BusinessMirror the city “is one of the prime locations for expansion of its [network].”

S&R Price Club is formerly known S&R Membership Shopping until it was acquired by Lucio Co-owned Puregold Price Club. It would retain its same exclusive shopping menu for cardholders.

“That’s why you would see known politicians and movie personalities shopping at our stores, obviously to avoid the crowds, but mainly to seek out our prime items,” Funelas said. “Our products are not the usual items you see in the shopping malls.”

“To overseas Filipinos who miss the Costco shopping atmosphere, they usually go to our stores,” she added.

S&R has an affiliation with Costco Wholesale Corp., the same exclusive membership shopping store with stores in the US, Canada and Mexico, among others.

BIMP-Eaga ‘triangle route’ eyed

Written By: Kristianne Fusilero
Tuesday, 01 May 2012
Category: Economy

Stakeholders in the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines-East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-Eaga) are eyeing the `triangular route’ involving Davao, Manado in Indonesia and Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia.

...

The plan to make a triangular route was proposed by the private sector particularly the Malaysian airline company MASwings—the firm that bared intention to connect Davao to Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan in Malaysia.

Dato’ Capt Mohd Nawawi Awang, chief executive officer of MASwings, said they are planning to start their Davao operations within this year or early next year. “Once we start our operations in Davao, we will targe a 60% passenger load factor,” he said.

$1.86-B ADB projects in PHL focus on infra, climate change, social sectors
EARL VICTOR L. ROSERO, GMA News May 1, 2012 3:59pm

A $100-million river basin project in Agusan, a $500,000 grant for electricity consumer protection, and a $1-million technical assistance grant for a sustainable urban transport project in Davao are among the $1.86 billion in loans and $21.6 million in grants the Asian Development Bank has programmed for the Philippines for 2012-2014.

“The lending program has been adjusted to align with the priorities of the government and increased investments in infrastructure, climate change mitigation, and social services are proposed,” the ADB said in its country operations business plan for the Philippines.

~French macarons are very different from the macaroons that we all pinoys love, which uses dessicated coconut as the main ingredient. And it is spelled with a single "o".

~French macarons uses "tant pour tant", the combination of almond powder and powdered sugar, folded in whipped egg whites or what we know as "meringue".
~Baked until the "foot" comes out. Foot, why foot?? Yes, a French macaron is not a French macaron without it's famous feet...it's a cracky ringlet surrounding the sides... Now you know! ^_^

While APPLE PIE is a sugary dessert and, as with any sweet treats, should be enjoyed in moderation, this indulgence offers health benefits as well.

The SPICES commonly used in apple pie recipes---mainly the cinnamon---help REGULATE BLOOD SUGARr and IMPROVE INSULIN SENSITIVITY.

Apples help LOWER CHOLESTEROL and provide HEALTHFUL FIBER.

In addition, both cinnamon and apples offer antibacterial properties, aiding the growth of beneficial probiotics and warding off illnesses.

What are you waiting for? Have some Apple Pie now~ :)

~Did you know?
Pumpkin is chock full ‘o goodness. You can tell by its bright color that it’s going to be going to be good for you. Not only is pumpkin loaded with vitamin A and antioxidant carotenoids, particularly alpha and beta-carotenes, it’s a good source of vitamins C, K, and E, and lots of minerals, including magnesium, potassium, and iron. ^_^

Davao City traffic project showcases Pinoy ingenuity

A BALIKBAYAN who made a name for himself in the United States in traffic engineering has showcased a top-notch talent with what has been cited by multilateral agencies as the “best governance project” hereabouts: the P1-billion traffic-signal synchronization project in Davao City, whose closed-circuit television (CCTV) component has vastly improved the campaign against crime. Believe it or not, their CCTV can capture vehicle details even from 2 kilometers away.

The balikbayan, engineer Efren Abratique, one of the University of the East’s top 60 graduates, has again swished his “magic wand” with another world-class fixing of traffic signals within the Makati Business District, primarily around the perimeter of the Glorietta complex. No less than Ayala Land top honcho Antonio Aquino was so impressed by the traffic design that Abratique & Associates is a top pick for a planned huge Ayala real-estate project in Quezon City.

With the Ayala showcase, local officials and even foreign consultants will now have two traffic lakbay-aral projects to learn from, that in Davao City and then the Ayala business district, where traffic movement has reportedly eased by 52 percent. This means a reduction in gas emissions that, in turn, mean that, environment-wise, solving traffic woes would earn ecologic points for the Philippines.

CALL CENTER Teleperformance Philippines, Inc. aims to grow its local workforce by as much as a fifth this year to keep up with plans to launch new services, officials said in a briefing yesterday.
The local arm of the multinational Teleperformance Group expects to recruit more workers this year to grow its labor pool by 15-20%, said David Rizzo, president of Teleperformance Asia-Pacific.

This, as the business process outsourcing firm is slated to expand to more locations outside Metro Manila and will take on more acquisitions in the near term.

The hiring requirement will depend on market interest for the firm’s new products and services, which will in turn translate to an increased demand for contact agents, Mr. Rizzo said.

“It depends on the call volume,” he explained.

The official also said that they are offering more than a competitive compensation package to retain their employees.

“We do put emphasis on employee compensation [but we are also focusing] on employment experience,” said Mr. Brian J. Johnson, managing director for Teleperformance Philippines.

The business process outsourcing firm, currently on its 16th year in the country, will open new sites in the Mindanao and Northern Luzon this year, after it opened branches in Cebu City last year and in Bacolod City in 2006.

It is currently in the “finalizing process” of selecting the areas in the said regions, according to Mr. Rizzo.

The official identified the requirements that the firm expects of a host site, such as facilities for power, telecommunications and infrastructure like convenience stores, food shops and public transportation.

“It takes a little bit of time to create [the] infrastructure,” said Mr. Rizzo.

He added that the government should understand what it needs for contact centers to be successful.

On the power crisis of Mindanao, Mr. Rizzo said that the company will spend on facilities to prepare for any power outage.

The firm will make investments in facilities such as multiple generators, he said.

And the company will also acquire more businesses in the near term to add new technology to its portfolio.

The firm make acquisitions “simply not for the sake of growth,” said Mr. Rizzo.

The official said that the firm is more interested in the “added value” a prospective acquisition will bring to Teleperformance’s existing operations. -- Monica Joy O. Cantilero

Cantilero

DAVAO CITY -- Non-biodegradable plastic bags and polystyrene foam as food and beverage containers will no longer be allowed in this city starting June 28, this year.

Polystyrene foam is more commonly referred to as Styrofoam and is widely used as fastfood container.

Have something to report? Tell us in text, photos or videos.

City Councilor Melchor Quitain said in his privilege speech that this move abides by Section 7, Article V of the Ordinance 0361 series of 2010 or the Davao City Ecological Solid Waste Management Ordinance of 2009.

According to the ordinance, only recyclable, biodegradable, or reusable containers are allowed to be used as food and beverage containers.

"Starting June 28, 2012, the use of non-biodegradable plastic bags and polystyrene foam as food and beverage containers is completely, totally, and absolutely banned in our city," Quitain said.

Also, Section 10, Rule VI of the ordinance’s implementing rules and regulations encourages the food and packaging industry to develop a more environmentally friendly container to replace the non-biodegradable ones.

Quitain said those who violate the implementation of the ordinance will face criminal liabilities and penal sanctions.

"No one can avoid criminal prosecution and conviction by claiming unawareness of the provisions of the ordinance, because ignorance of the law excuses no one," he said.

He also urged business establishments in the city to secure beforehand a substitute to the plastic and polystyrene plastic bags that they use for packing, so that they can better prepare when this ordinance takes effect next month.

"That way, there will be no hassle and abrupt disruption of business activities in the city," he said, adding that by doing this, violations against Ordinance 0361 can be avoided as well.

Quitain said he will also propose to the City Council the passage of a resolution to involve the City Environment and Natural Resources Office, the City Legal Office, Business Bureau, and the Waste Management Board in the information drive to inform the public about the new ordinance. “We like Davao very much. Peace and order there is good. The business community is growing. Everybody there is expanding,” Anthony G. Sy, S&R president, said in a separate interview.

Puregold shareholders okay acquisition of S&R stores

SHAREHOLDERS OF Puregold Price Club, Inc. yesterday endorsed the company’s purchase of an affiliated upscale shopping chain, which it plans to expand.

At Puregold’s annual stockholders meeting yesterday, company shareholders voted to approve the firm’s earlier-announced acquisition of Co-owned Kareila Management Corp., operator of high-end S&R Membership Shopping, by way of a share swap deal valued at P16.5 billion.

The acquisition is seen to broaden Puregold’s store market base -- which currently caters to the CDE income segment -- by capturing S&R’s AB customer segment.

“We will now proceed with the next instrument which is the deed of exchange. We’re preparing for that, subject to documentation. It is a process we will follow,” Leonardo B. Dayao, Puregold president, told reporters after the company’s annual stockholders meeting yesterday without elaborating on the timetable.

Moving forward, the group plans to open one S&R outlet per year after the acquisition is completed.

“We have opened one S&R in 2010 and 2011, so we should do the same for 2012. This year it’s going to be Davao [City],” Mr. Dayao said, noting that the construction cost of that outlet may amount to roughly half a billion pesos, to be funded mostly by internally-generated cash.

“We like Davao very much. Peace and order there is good. The business community is growing. Everybody there is expanding,” Anthony G. Sy, S&R president, said in a separate interview.

Further expansion may be concentrated in Metro Manila. “We feel that Metro Manila is very much underserved in terms of S&R stores,” Mr. Dayao said.

“After Davao, we are looking to come back to Manila. The next store after Davao will be on Shaw Boulevard [in Mandaluyong City]. We are looking at the former Cherry [Foodarama] property for the next S&R,” Mr. Sy said.

Compared to Puregold’s more ambitious strategy of opening 25 stores this year, S&R is more conservative in its growth strategy as a typical S&R store is bigger than an average Puregold branch, requiring about 20,000 square meters of land, with a significant portion devoted to parking spaces, Mr. Dayao explained.

Many firms do not submit tourist arrival report
By Antonio L. Colina IV
Wednesday, May 9, 2012

THE Davao City Investment Promotions Center (DCIPC) will convene managers and supervisors of some 120 accommodation establishments in the metropolis this afternoon to resolve the problem of non-submission of tourist arrival reports.

DCIPC chief Jason Magnaye, speaking at the weekly Club 888 Forum at the Marco Polo Hotel Davao on Wednesday, said out of the 120 registered hotels and resorts in Davao City, only 50 percent have been submitting reports to his office every week.

Have something to report? Tell us in text, photos or videos.

Magnaye said it's important that hotels submit their arrival data to give the City Government clearer picture on the number of tourists visiting the city.

because of corruption within the system, political maneauverings of budget appropriation is undermining growth and development of the tourism industry and travel in general.

a quick look at those provincial airports listed for improvements and redevelopments against davao citys.

which of those airports had surpassed the traffic volume, number of flights, and cargo volume of davao airport per year that theyre given the priority over davao city.

given the volume of passengers using davao airport, the philippines is very much exposed to more eyes of people from everywhere than airports that were given more priority for improvements. didnt they sense how bad in shape the country is in the eyes of people from the outside world of the philippines. dont believe on the positive reports fed for domestic consumptions. corruption and incompetence are still there very much. dont be happy by a few positve comments from some people bec the general impression on the the country is still in bad shape

Davao City bans use of plastics, styrofoams
Philippine Daily Inquirer
3:28 pm | Thursday, May 10th, 2012
share100 100

DAVAO CITY – After banning smoking and spitting in public, the city government announced that starting June 28, it would be a crime here to use environmentally-destructive plastic bags and styrofoams in packaging, including for food products.
Joseph Dominic Felizarta, chief of the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro), said the city government will strictly implement the ban on non-biodegradable plastics and Polystyrene foam as food and beverage packaging starting June 28, when the city’s Ecological Solid Waste Management ordinance becomes fully-effective.

The ordinance was passed in 2010 yet but had to satisfy some rules first, such as publication, before it becomes effective.

Now, there is no more hindrance to its implementation, Felizarta said.
He said in lieu of plastics and styros, establishment owners could use the so-called “bio-plastics.” Bio-plastics are made from various types of degradable materials such as aliphatic polyesters.

“This is part of our effort to help protect our environment and this would also be helpful in preventing the clogging of our canals, which causes flooding,” Felizarta told the Inquirer.

He said a massive information campaign had been launched in connection with the upcoming ban – especially among the managements of supermarkets and public market vendors.

“So far there were no complaints or opposition to the ban as everyone was amenable to the idea to help in cleaning the environment,” Felizarta said.

He said, in fact, some big supermarkets have already taken measures and slowly introduced ways to avoid the use of plastics and styrofoams.
“One mall now uses paper bags for packaging at least once a week,” Felizarta said.

He said there is no way establishments can fool the city government either by pretending to use bio-plastics.

Felizarta said the Cenro will conduct tests to determine if plastics marked “biodegradable” are indeed genuine. Biodegrable plastics, he said, become brittle when exposed to heat of about 80 degrees centigrade.

Under the ordinance, Felizarta said first-time violators would be fined P300 and will be required to attend a seminar on solid waste management. Those who fail to attend the seminar will pay the fine and face charges.
Second time offenders will be fined with P500 or render community service for at least five days.
Third time offenders would shell out P1,000 in fine or a 10-day community service.
For those simply stubborn to follow the law, Felizarta said stiffer penalties await them such as jail terms of up to six months.
“The repetitive offender will also be required to pay the fine of P3,000 and render community service for 15 days,” he said.

As for plastics used to pack small items such as candies and snack foods, Felizarta said this would be treated as residual wastes that will directly go to the city’s sanitary landfills.

He also said the city government still strictly implements the “No Collection No Segregation” policy.

Felizarta said unclassified wastes are left behind by garbage collectors.
Because of this, he said the city government saved P37 million in hauling services since the policy was implemented about two years ago. Dennis Santos and Ayan Mellejor, Inquirer Mindanao

Karaan na man ni pero husto gihapon.. sorry basig gipost na ni:

DAVAO CITY, Philippines — The city government has been talking with the private sector for a joint development of a 20-hectare property in Barangay (village)Lasang into a relocation site for informal settlers, a city hall official said.

Roy Ryan II Rigor, acting housing and home site officer of the City Housing Office, said developing the area alone would cost about P100 million, a task that the city government could not undertake without external help.

Landfill would have to be dumped on the area — which the Alsons group of companies earlier donated — because it was on the low-lying portion of the city and not elevating it could result in bigger problems in the future, according to Rigor.

“The city is currently faced with a budget lack problem in developing the area,” he said.

The decision to develop the area, Rigor said, came amid the fast depletion of lots in existing relocation sites due to the rising number of informal settlers in the city.

There has been no clear data on how many families lived on properties belonging to other individuals or companies as of yet but hundreds of informal settlers need to be moved out to relocation sites, according to Rigor.

“The increasing number of informal settlers can be attributed to the rapid urbanization in the city,” he said.

Data from the City Housing Office show that the city has 13 relocation areas with a total land area of 773,259 hectares.

The Los Amigos relocation area in Tugbok district, with a total land area of 23 hectares for Phase 1 alone, is the most popular among informal settlers — who agreed to be relocated — due to its accessibility. About 729 informal settlers had agreed to be relocated there.

Lots in other relocation areas such as in the barangay (villages) of Catalunan Grande, Tibungco, Mintal, Marapangi in Toril district, Tigatto, Upper Malagamot, Panacan, and Mahayag in Bunawan district, are also being filled up fast, according to Rigor.

Aside from informal settlers, Rigor said the city government wanted to relocate residents living in areas of the city, which had been found to be flood-prone.

He said the city would be courting a bigger disaster if they were not relocated as soon as possible.

In June last year, at least 31 people were killed when floods inundated three low-lying villages in Talomo district, including the densely populated Matina village.

Well gangs, the tourists arrival data would better be gathered from no other than the airport immigration office.Although I must admit that some tourists go through other gateways of the country like the NAIA and MCIA.

Volume of cargoes handled by state-run major ports increased by more than 4 percent for the first quarter, latest government data showed.

For the quarter, the Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) handled the biggest volume of the total throughput to 5 MMT higher from last year’s 4.3 MMT or a growth rate of 16 percent.
