There are other road projects - major ones - reflected on that plan. Isa lang ang maalala ko. I think I can still get hold of that map. I can pull strings. Kaso andito ako sa malayo.

Almost but not quite. There's always a GRP counterpart funding. Remember the case of the Davao International Airport? One of the reasons why it was delayed because we could not come up with the funds. Pero ang dami dyan nag-o-offer ng funding with a very low repayment scheme tapos mahaba pa grace period. I could say this for a fact because I once facilitated a Manila-based Australian consultancy group with funding from one of China's national construction companies to touch base with Davao politicos for possible projects, specifically the sewerage system and the coastal road. Siempre walang nangyari. First, they encounter problems with our politicos, I don't know kung ano, and second, ginulo ng mga senador ang mga chinese dahil sa North Rail project sa Luzon. Nabwisit yata mga intsik. Umatras.

Maganda sana kung natuloy yung sewerage system ,it will be a great help to ease the problem of our sewerage problem baka kasali pa waste water treatment doon . I really prefer Davao to put up waste water treatment first than anythnig else , sa palagay ko lang pag nangyari itung project na ito people will have no excuse throwing solid waste and waste water in the canals indiscriminately just like what we are doing now in our solid waste program .Can i ask? is it doable financially?

Dinabaw:

Sewerage system is a complete system - collection, containment, treatment and disposal of gray waste or waste water. It's like the water system of DCWD but in reverse flow. An ordinance should be enacted to require households to tap into the system with a fee. Large waste generators like malls, hotels, industrial parks and office towers shall be required to put up their own sewerage treatment plants (STPs). Once the system is in place, all potential waste generators shall be declared non-conforming and will be given time to conform with the standards set by the ordinance. Pag nag-expire at di pa naka-tap or naka-construct ng STP, automatic violator ka na ng batas.

Financially doable? Yes. Kung nakakuha tayo ng loan sa Land Bank for various projects, bakit hindi for a sewerage system. We could always include the project sa listahan ng NEDA para nakapila na tayo for ODA. May proceso dyan. At mag-uumpisa yan sa City Hall - specifically sa CPDO. Meron tayong development plan and I'm sure nasa listahan 'tong project na 'to. And together with it is an investment plan (possible fund sources for govt projects and programs). The development plan becomes a binding document once approved by the HLURB. Meaning may pinanghahawakan na tayong dokumento to backup our request for vital project funding. In short, kung may kumilos, may mangyayari. "Kung hindi ngayon, kailan pa."

If they didnt scrapped proposal, I think its part of the approved 990M loan from LBP. Not an expressway tho, the proposed farm-to-market road will connect Bunawan to Cabantian and Toril to Calinan:

I've seen several and I've seen some implemented and operational now. One is the Boracay Environmental Infrastructure Project funded by JBIC (Japan Bank for International Cooperation) though a Yen Loan Package. This one passed through NEDA.The project is both water and sewerage system. I also made a conceptual sewerage system layout plan for Panglao Island in Bohol. It also has an STP.

A residential septic tank is, actually, a complete sewerage system in a household scale. Most of them are two chambers. The more efficient is the three-chamber vault. May treatment sya, natural anaerobic process. And disposal through a drain field usually sand field. Alam ng mga arquitecto at inhinyerong kasama natin dito yon. Yong collect and dispose, totally walang treatment yon.

That's a good start. I think it's the same right-of-way but it goes further down south. If it's farm-to-market, okay lang, as long as the right-of-way is delineated anticipating a future expressway. Say 100 meters. It's like travelling along the NLEX with green fields on both sides. The areas that will be traversed by the expressway will remain agricultural. These should be protected by the government to be retained as food production areas and place these under the network of protected agricultural lands of the DA. This is where our "hardworking" CPDO should start working and identify areas suited for agriculture and other complementary uses para maiwasan ang uncontrolled development because of the economic magnet that will be created by the access. Sana nga mag trabaho sila.

Lastly, this road could become a tourist road. It will definitely become a scenic route - mountains to the west and the view of the sea to east.

PIA Press Release
12/03/2005
P900-M LBP loan to generate more jobs

By Rose B Palacio

Davao City (3 December) -- Davao Cty's P900 million loan from the Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP) is expected to fuel priority programs of the city government and generate more jobs for Dabawenyos.

"The LBP board of directors approved a P990-million loan facility through LBP board resolution no. 04-341 that will finance the Davao Development Plan of the city government," city administrator Wendel Avisado said.

Initially, 1,602 jobs are expected to be created from the proposed five projects identified under the city's plan.

Planned projects under the P900-million Land Bank loan include: the construction of farm-to-market roads and alternate routes that is projected to cost P160 million and expected to generate about 1,022 jobs.

The project comprises the construction of the Bunawan-Cabantian road section and the Calinan-Toril section.
The 19.01 kilometer Bunawan-Cabantian road will link seven barangays and will directly benefit 72,547 residents including farmers residing in the area.
The 25.30-kilometer Calinan-Toril road will traverse nine barangays and will benefit about 59,617 residents and will serve as a venue for development as road production for some 6,396.44 hectares of agricultural lands will be put in place.

The 6,396.44 hectares of agricultural lands are currently untapped. Once developed this will ease traffic along Calinan-Ulas road junction.

Another proposed project under the approved loan facility is the P250-million Urban and Drainage and Flood Control that will create about 300 jobs.

The project under the Shelter and Urban Land Reform program would cost about P100-million and is expected to create some 200 jobs.

This involves the acquisition and development of 40 to 50 hectares of new relocation and settlement sites. The city government has identified 1,906 households qualified for relocation under the UDHA law.

The Road and Drainage Maintenance project costing about P130-million is expected to maintain and improve road conditions thus would provide easy access and delivery of goods and services. (PIA)

City to borrow P110 million to buy garbage bins

By Barbara Carla R. Quiero

THE Davao City Council granted Mayor Rodrigo Duterte legislative authority to enter into an additional P110 million loan agreement with the Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP) for the purchase of additional garbage bins, City Administrator Wendel Avisado said.

Councilor Bonifacio Militar, during the approval of Duterte's request in Tuesday's regular session of the City Council, vowed to furnish all councilors with a document from the Executive Department containing the particulars on how the money will be spent.

Militar, chair of the City Council committee on finance, ways and means, and appropriation, said he received a letter from the mayor dated July 7 requesting for authority to negotiate with LBP or any government banking institution for an additional loan deal.

"The proposed additional loan of P110 million will finance the augmentation of the fund for the very important and pressing project on Upgrading of Solid Waste Management and Collection System," Duterte said in his letter.

Militar said the letter did not, however, mention the details of the project.

"It only said for the upgrading of the solid waste management program of the city and we believe it is urgent," Militar said.

Meanwhile, Avisado said the P110 million will be used for the purchase of additional garbage bins.

Avisado said the city is still in need of more bins that are larger in size to fully cover all the 240,000 households in Davao City.

"We will replace bins with bigger ones but still can be lifted by our compactor trucks. In that sense the garbage collection will be boosted," Avisado said.

In 2004, the city borrowed P990 million for the urban drainage and flood control program of the city costing P250 million, P350 million for the establishment of a sensorized traffic signalization, P100 million for the shelter and urban land reform program, and P160 for farm-to-market roads program.

This year, the city availed of a P500 million loan for the acquisition of a sanitary landfill costing P230 million, P70 million for the conversion of the government-owned PTA-grounds into a greenbelt park, and P200 million for the city sports complex.

Medyo O.T. ito but i want to share this with all of you..

i got this in the mail....

judge it if it is really true.....

GALENGA TALAGA NIYA GYUD, UY!

How can one distinguish a Davaoeno to a Cebuano? Or to
a Cagayanon? Difficult? Easy. Davaoenos are one of the
most unique people in the world. We can easily stand
out if we are placed in a crowd of Filipinos from
other parts of the country. And how,you say? Language.

Davao City, aptly called the melting pot of cultures,
is home to many dialects. Tagalog, Cebuano, Ilonggo,
Ilocano,Chavacano, Moslem, Bicolano. Name it, we'll
speak it. If the Filipino language is a composition of
all the dialects and languages in the Philippines, you
might as well say that the language we speak in Davao
City is the real Filipino language, and not Tagalog.

However, since it is a hodgepodge of different
tongues, it is sometimes funny to hear our language
"bastardizing", for lack of better word, the other
dialects. Strangely, that distinguishes us from the
rest. Try these.

In stating a fact, Manilenos say, "Talagang mabait si
Weng." In Davao, we say. "Mabait bitaw gyud si Weng".
Too assertive? One asks, "Ano nga `yong pangalan mo?".
In Davao we say, "Ano gani `yong pangalan (or worst,
ngalan) mo?". When somebody commits a mistake or
surprises someone, we always never fail to say, "Hala
gyud ka" or "Halaka!". Duh.

We are fond of re-constructing the language. There's
the GI+ verb, such as,"Gisabi kasi ni Helen na
mag-absent si Bernerd bukas", or "Ginanon ni Lalai si
Belinda sa mukha". You'll never find "ginanon" in any
dictionary, I swear to God. There's the KA+ adjective,
as in, "Kaputi gyud ng mukha ni Yang-yang, noh?" or
"Kapayat nlng gyud ni Jason ngayon." The MAKA+ verb
form, such as, "Maka-inis talaga si Albert, uy!" or
"Maka-uwi man talaga ako ng matagal ngayon bah".

The NAG+ verb, as in,"Nagsabi man kasi si Tita Prescy
na magpunta daw tayo ng airport" or "Hindi pa man siya
nagdating, uy!"

Adding new words or new meanings to old words to the
dictionary is one of our favorite past time.

NAKIN: "Alam man nakin `yan ba!", "Saan nakin kita
nakita gani?".
KU-AN: "Ku-an daw ang gawin mo", "Si ku-an kasi ano
masyado". (No sense at all.)
ANO: "Na-ano ka diyan, Bryan!", "Ano man yan si Van,
nabuing man siguro yan siya, uy!".
HA: "Lake-ha na ng tiyan ni Lulu uy!", "Gwapa-ha niya
uy!"
BEH: "Sige daw beh, dare!", "Pakipasa daw ng ballpen
ni Tzaris beh".
KAY: "Huwag na, Wowie, kay nandito naman si Norma",
"Umupo ka muna kay nasa-CR pa si Elma."

To express disgust over someone, we utter, "Gago kaba
diay para maniwala sa kanya", or "Ano man yan siya
uy!", or "Maka-inis man yan siya, uy!", or when
pestered when doing something, you'd quip,"Huwag lagi
ba!" On the other hand, when we praise somebody's
extra special deed or talent, our Davaoeno tongue
slips words like,"Kuyaw lagi `yan siya!", "Galenga
niya uy!", "Ayusa niya uy!", "Kuyawa ni Orly uy!" or
"Hindi ako makatu-o sa ginawa niya!" . Hay, makatawa
talaga. Ooops!

There are just so too many words to mention. Just
check out the words you spew everyday. Sometimes you
just laugh at yourself when you realize that you've
just said those very words. No matter how long you
stay in Manila or in the States, the moment you're
back to Davao, your tongue feels as at home as you
do. Language is the very soul of every being. You
just can't do anything about it. Or as how we say it,
"Anohin man natin yan?"

Light Rail Project, P 240B

This project aims to establish an urban light rail transit system that will serve the coastal areas of the city as well as neighboring cities and municipalities in Davao del Norte and Davao del Sur. It hopes to provide faster, stable and reliable services to transport people and cargoes in the area. It is expected that the implementation of the project will result to the reduction of passengers’ travel time as well as solve the traffic congestions on the roads.

The project will cover a total of 37 stations for a total of 82.7 kms. Stretching from the city of Panabo in Davao del Norte and the Municipality of Sta. Cruz in Davao del Sur. It will be implemented through a Built-Operated Transfer (BOT) financing scheme and as planned, will be constructed as follows:

Stage 1 Panacan to Toril 35.7 kms 22 stations
Stage 2-A Toril to Sta. Cruz 25.0 kms 10 stations
Stage 2-B Panacan to Panabo 22.0 kms 5 stations

...as of to date, a private firm has already been tasked to conduct the feasibility study to be approved by the City Council.

There are already too many banana plantations up there.
Calinan is high up in the mountains and water is limited. The few streams up there will surely get contaminated. :bash:
Aerial spraying will be too hazardous to local residents. :(
No more pineapples and bananas please.

I have guestions about coconut oil? It is said to be a very valuable source for good health? I asked here in my country for this coconut virgine oil, so far I have not found it . One reason why it is not sold here is because it contains high levels of triglycerides, I was told ? How good is this oil really for our health? :)

ROBINSONS LAND CORP. of taipan John Gokongwei is building new malls and possibly a new hotel in Tagaytay City in the next two to three years as it continues to remain bullish on the economy.

In a draft prospectus filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), RLC identified five new malls that may open between 2007 and 2008: in Paco (Manila), Davao City (Davao del Sur), Tagaytay City, Dumaguete City (Negros Oriental), and Pulilan (Bulacan).

These sites will add 130,000 square meters in terms of gross floor area to the company's existing 18 malls with a total floor area of 1.2 million square meters

Future projects in the pipeline are new malls, including a retail and lifestyle complex in Sucat, Parañaque City and a community shopping mall in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental.

Following our mixed-use model, new malls will also be constructed in our integrated communities in the cities of Tagaytay and Manila.

Recommendations for tourists from abroad.

Health care in davao is cheap and good compared with most of Asia. If you have medical problems it easy to get good quality attention. Ask for advice about which doctor/hospital to go to from a dive shop; they are often more current than the guest houses or resorts. Visitors are advised to drink bottled or boiled water. Tap water in the hotel is potable. Bottled drinking water is also available in the hotel room, compliments at most hotels. Some doctors suggest getting your hepatitis shoots and staying away from uncooked fruits and vegetables. Some also recommend staying away from pastries due to how milk is pasteurized in the PI. But all interested in visiting should consult your own personal doctor for advice and recommendations

thnakfully, this doesn't happen in Davao. We have all the needed clean water for everyone here :D

- VHT Plants - 234 million pesos
- Sumitomo Plastic Plant - 275 million pesos
- Stargate Corp. processing plant - 15 million pesos
- Southern Philippines Fresh Fruit's VHT Plant - 52 million pesos

I just have had a dream last night. Pisay was just near a certain "Pacific" Mall, then there was this Ayala Global City wherein there is a wide road area where all cars can go everywhere. It was a funny dream though. Cars and people were all in Davao. Then, Ayala corporation was manning the whole city.

I have guestions about coconut oil? It is said to be a very valuable source for good health? I asked here in my country for this coconut virgine oil, so far I have not found it . One reason why it is not sold here is because it contains high levels of triglycerides, I was told ? How good is this oil really for our health? :)

It's very good, although the taste is...  ???

Well, there are some tasty coco oil though, don't worry about that... :D

God Morgon Ady,

I think it is like this, you in Davao have no problem with your water, but people like from Europe might have it. Why? We are not adjusted to your different bakterias and whatever as well as you might react for the same reasons, do you visit my country. :) Thats why tourists form abroad are recommended to drink bottled water and eat cooked fruits and vegetables.

About oil I know different oils are good like for example olive oil or rape oil ( rape is a type of plant that makes vegetable margarines and such). The coconut oil is presented as a miracle oil and I just question that, surley it has good qualities I am just conserened about the suposibly high amounts of triglyserides if that is so. :)

It is very good to analyze the bacterie en le pays. :D Because even we can drink our tap water. We are one of the few countries in Asia which doesn't suffer that much in diarrhea because we have a very beautiful water supply.

Both are complete sewerage system - collection, containment, treatment and disposal. Yes, small areas but we're talking about 2,000 hectares + of hotels and resort complexes (approx 3,000 rooms), and at any peak time, population could swell to hundreds of thousands. Maybe half or three-quarter of Davao's daytime transient population. The system is designed to handle huge volume of waste water in anticipation to future tourism development. Small area, manageable, yes, but still entailed big investment.

I just happen to be very sensetive to for example chlorine (asthma trigger for me) is your water loaded with chlorine or is it natural without any type of added cleaner? I know all water has different amounts of parasites, viruses, coley bacterias and other germs. It is the amounts of those that differs form place to place. Ady, it is very nice that you can drink your tap water I am happy for you all in Davao.:) :) :)

Another update - Philippine Stock Exchange Davao

PSE (Philippine Stock Exchange) is planning to set up another two offices as an addition to their two existing sites located in Ortigas Center and Makati Business District. These two new facilities will be located both in Cebu and Davao. It is like a mini stock market set up with around 20 to 30 booths.

This was disclosed by PSE vice president himself, Melchor Guerrero during the Cebu Stock Market Roadshow yesterday at Marco Polo Plaza Hotel.

excerpt about Samal Dream Resort

And thus we had to say goodbye to that Little Liguid island where dreams do come true. No kidding, i did say goodbye.. hehehe, and I i'd swore to buy an islet someday, 2 to be exact. The waters were quite calm as we headed back to AnaMarina. Noel couldnt make it that day so he sent Landz over to assist us in our 2nd day excapade. So we started with the posh lifestyle in the island. We now go to the backpacker areas.

Honestly, that day was really exhausing. Taking photos of resorts, sceneries, and stuff. We also got a chance to meet Boy Masculino, an aritist who have been with the multiawarded filmmaker and artist, Kidlat Tahimik of BaguioÜ Just sharing. He was working on a resort being developed. The landscape is amazing. They have a mini zoo where they kept monkeys, snakes, and tropical birds. Coolness! For now the place is called Samal Dream, i cant wait for it to open. Ill definitely drop by if ever i go back.

After this very long day, dinner at Gimmix Restobar was a treat. Good thing it was accoustic night. We got to enjoy great local artist music.
We spent the night over at AnaMarina, I think it was already 10pm when we got there. I had my own little hut again, this time overlooking the great sealine (if there was such a term). I slept at around 12ish after taking a cool opensky bath.

While at the beach in Santa Maria, Davao del Sur, I caught a shot of a young boy sitting in this boat, a banca, on the beach. He had been out fishing in the boat, and was just taking a short rest on the beach when I took the photo.

I went to the beach with my family yesterday, we visited Santa Maria, Davao del Sur and had a fantastic time there! Offshore, you could see this fishing boat at anchor in the Gulf of Davao. I wonder what kind of fish they usually catch? It looks like a serious boat!

When you are in Davao and want to go to Samal Island for some beach fun, you ride a boat (locally called a “banca”) out to the island. From this location in Davao, it is about a 10 minute boat ride out to Samal Island for some recreation. On a nice day, it is not unusual for us to take the boat out to Paradise Island, eat lunch there, enjoy the view of the city from the island, and just relax before heading back to the City. Life in Paradise is hard, but somebody has to do it!

New gold rush site found in Compostela Valley town

by Gladys @ 12:40 pm. Filed under News

COMPOSTELA VALLEY - A group of small-scale miners found rich gold veins in the shallow depths in Mount Pyagabangan, which can be reached through an eight-hour walk eastward from New Bataan, Compostela Valley.

Mount Pyagabangan is part of the mountain range of nearby Mount Manurigao.

Starting-up tunnel financier Sergio de la Cruz (his real name was not disclosed for security reasons), claimed the mountain “is really rich with high-grade gold veins that can be found in shallow tunnel diggings.”

Earlier, a member of another small-scale mining group said they “scored” about 30 milligrams of gold from a pitcher of gold muck ores from their initial diggings.

A milligram of gold fetches about P500 among New Bataan gold buyers.

I was watching this TV program of Pastor Quiboloy, Give Us this Day last night and a message sender from Tarlac said that he idolizes MAyor Duterte so much and has very strong feeling for Davao that he wants to come and become a Davaoeno soon. :) Love You Davao :)

I often had the fear that whenever Digong does a curse, the world shakes... What will happen if it would be so in Quiboloy's show... I bet Quiboloy might run for public office.

How is your work going I do not mean at the cc, I mean the other big and interesting one:wink2:

It's almost finished, I will share it all to the SSC-Davao folks and I hope it will do good to all. BTW, there will be a soundtrack to it, and I will only link it to a few people here so please do watch out for it.

On the other hand, it's currently undergoing some major editing. It will have a truly Davaoeno flavor.

High-tech traffic program to finish this year: Duterte
By Rizalene P. Acac

THE traffic signalization program of the city government would be finished by the end of this year. Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said construction has been non-stop, through the supervision of the City Planning and Development Office, to hasten the completion of the project.

“There are diggings done every night (to fast track the project),” he said. He said he is looking forward to providing Davaoeños with a good traffic system as soon as possible. He said even if the sensorized system was scrapped because it is too expensive, the local government would assure that the new system would be usable and convenient to all, especially to motorists.

The traffic signalization has a total budget of P140-million, which was sourced out from the P990-million loan obtained by the city government from the Land Bank of the Philippines. The light would be placed among the 29 intersections in the city.

The local government earlier planned that the traffic signalization would utilize computers but due to the cost, it was replaced by the synchronized system patterned after the ones used by New York City where the equipment

[DEADLINE OF ENTRIES: OCTOBER 5, 2006]

The PESO Challenge is a business plan competition among technology ventures. As such, all business plan entries, at the very least, employ technology, technology application, or a technology product which contains a moderate degree of new knowledge and complexity and is reasonably different from existing technology in the target market.

The competition is run over several stages:

1. Online Registration of Teams
Initially, team details are submitted through an online registration form found in the PESO website (Register > Participants). Team eligibility requirement are listed in Competition > Business Concept Screening Round

2. Business Concept Submission (all applicants)
This is followed by the electronic submission of the Business Concept to the secretariat email address. The Business Concept is described in full below. These will be screened to determine the semi-finalists who proceed to the next stage, which will be heavy on training and mentoring. The three best Business Concepts will be recognized and awarded.

3. Business Plan Submission (semi-finalists)
While writing their full-blown business plans, the semi-finalists attend the Participant Enrichment Series of Workshops and write the full-blown business plans, over a period of about 3 months. A thorough evaluation of the written business plans will identify the ten finalists.

4. Revised Business Plan Submissions and Oral Presentations (finalists)
The finalists will undergo the Finalists' Enhancement Session and receive additional mentoring as they revise their business plans and prepare for oral presentations. During the finals, the finalists make a 20-minute oral presentation before a panel of judges who have the opportunity to grill the finalists over a 15-minute Q&A period.

5. Awards
Four teams with the best, 2nd best, 3rd best and 4th best business plans will receive cash awards as major winners. Honorable mention awards will also recognize those teams with the best technology, best presentation and best elevator pitch. During the awarding ceremonies, all finalists will be asked to deliver their elevator pitches.

I have a question for doc. abskess?

I have guestions about coconut oil? It is said to be a very valuable source for good health? I asked here in my country for this coconut virgine oil, so far I have not found it . One reason why it is not sold here is because it contains high levels of triglycerides, I was told ? How good is this oil really for our health? :)

Hi there Lena :)

Coconuts can be a source of an important physiologically functional components which are mainly brought about by the fat part of the whole coconut, in desicated coconut, and in the extracted coconut oil. Both LAuric and Capreic acids, the major fatty acids found in coconut oil, have long been recognized in their non-food usage in soap and cosmetic industries. Recent studies have shown also that the aforementioned acids exhibit antiviral, antibacterial and antiprotozoal properties. It has also been shown that natural fat from coconut in the diet leads to normalization of body lipids, protects liver against alcohol-related damages, and enhances the immune system.

Hope this suffices Inday Lena... :)

A Glorious 25th Anniversary Celebration at the Holy Child School of Davao
By Josie San Pedro Published : 2006-09-08

The five-day celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Holy Child School of Davao was ushered in by a motorcade around the principal streets of the city, starting from its site in E. Jacinto Street on August 26, 2006.

From then on it was a non-stop odyssey of activities until the 31st that included games. Playground demonstrations of all grade levels participated by the three campuses of the school, musical-literary competitions, and parents-teachers sportsfest and socials.

A Thanksgiving concert was held at the NCCC Convention Center on the 27th, with sterling performances by students, coached and guided by their teachers. The celebration was highlighted by a grand reception and dinner at HCSD Gym to celebrate the birthday of its foundress, Mrs. Victoria D. Leuterio, on the 28th.

Awards were conferred on pioneer teachers and non-teaching staff of the school. The school started from humble beginnings in a garage with two classrooms as a preparatory school called the Holy Child Learning Center in 1981. In 1982 it moved to the Jacinto site. With prodding from school parents the school opened its primary department.

Its name was changed to Holy Child School of Davao. As the enrolment continued to increase, the school offered a complete elementary course that gained government recognition in 1986 along with its prep course. In its 25 years of existence, Holy Child School of Davao now has 3 campuses located at Jacinto, Green Meadows and Buhangin The school opened its Sunday high school department at Jacinto for those who cannot attend a regular week-day schedule due to jobs.

The Green Meadows offers complete curricula in pre-school, elementary, and high school, and the Sunday school program since 2003; while the Buhangin campus offers pre-school and elementary curricula.

The HCSD continues to flourish as a leading institution of learning, not only in providing training to the youth in basic education and values, but also in harnessing local talents in the field of sports and in global competitiveness in the Information Technology market. Thus, HCSD has risen as a pillar in Information Technology education in the city.

It offers Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, Information Management and Computer Science. The College Department also offers two-year courses with Diploma in Information Technology and Office Skills Management with Desktop Publishing and other short courses.

In 2004, the school opened the College of Nursing, College of Business Administration and the College of Education. Holy Child opened the weekend college in 2005for working students to earn degrees in BS in Elementary Education, BS in Secondary Education, BS in Business Administration, and Information Technology Education Courses.

On its 25th anniversary the Holy Child School of Davao continues to expand its academic and physical resources, provides excellent education and sterling values to its students, that they may become productive citizens of the country, particularly their own communities in work worthy of God.

'OFW Libreng Tawag' now in Davao City
By Barbara Carla R. Quiero

THE Project Compassion "Libreng Tawag," a free telephone service to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), is finally here in Davao City after it was launched earlier in other key cities in the country.

The project is a nationwide charity project of the Rotary Club of Metro Cubao and co-sponsored by the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company, Davao City Government, barangay captains, and Rotary Clubs of Davao City. It was officially launched Thursday at the Davao City Police Office.

Former Philippine National police chief Arturo C. Lomibao, a Rotarian who initiated the project, said families or relatives of OFWs can avail of the free call 24/7 for six months.

"This is a help to those who lacks money to make a call. We are giving this as a form of reaching out to our less fortunate countrymen who want to call their relatives abroad," Lomibao said during Thursday's Kapehan sa Royal Mandaya press conference.

For those who want to avail of the free call, they can go to the Davao City Police Office calling booth and police officers will assist them, Lomibao said.

Free calls can be made to 31 countries that include Canada, US, Singapore, Taiwan, Lebanon, Greece, Vatican, Hong Kong, Ireland, and Spain.

Lomibao said a caller is entitled to a maximum of 5-minute call, but, if there are only few callers, they can extend few more minutes.

Lomibao said they are going to evaluate the project after six months of implementation in the city.

"If the project is effective then we will continue it," Lomibao said.

PEF Animal Keeper Edison Dayos holds the injured Philippine Eagle as veterinarian Rheyda Hinlo inspects its wounded neck. This juvenile eagle (left) barely escaped death as an airgun pellet found its way to the back of its head. (Sun.Star Davao/Jason Ibañez)

Wounded Philippine eagle rescued in Bukidnon

WEAK, stressed, and with a gunshot wound on the left side of its neck, a juvenile Philippine Eagle was rushed to Davao City from Bukidnon Thursday after another shooting incident that continues to threaten the population of the endangered national bird.

Malaybalay Community Environment and Natural Resources Officer Felix Mirasol contacted the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) late Wednesday evening to turn over the injured bird for treatment at the Philippine Eagle Center in Malagos, Baguio District, Davao City.

"Fun, food, and curiosity" was Mirasol's reply when asked about the possible reasons for the shooting.

Volunteers at work

The young eagle was recovered by three volunteer guards monitoring the Mt. Kitanglad Protected Area.

Volunteer Jelson Digbas reportedly saw the eagle kept in a chicken cage in a house in Barangay Kaatuan in Lantapan, Bukidnon.

The wound on the eagle's neck seemed fresh, prompting Digbas and his fellow volunteers Jacinto Cambari and Emeliano Lumiston to contact Lantapan Mayor Narciso Rubio who arranged for an ambulance to bring the eagle to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) office in Malaybalay.

Details on the eagle's captors and the circumstances of its shooting however remain sketchy.

Close call

PEF Veterinarian Rheyda Hinlo and three other PEF staff rushed to Bukidnon to meet Mirasol halfway to treat the bird. Hinlo found the bird alert but weak, with bruises on its wings.

An X-ray examination conducted late Thursday evening revealed an airgun pellet lodged under the eagle's skin at the back of its head. The pellet was removed successfully, but further review of the eagle's X-ray is needed to determine if the skull was fractured.

Future plans

Mirasol, who is also Mt. Kitanglad Protected Area Superintendent, commended the volunteer guards for their actions.

Mirasol's Protected Area Management Board is also looking into drafting new policies to monitor entry of local people to the park to prevent similar incidents in the future.

PEF Executive Director Dennis Salvador supports Mirasol's efforts, saying, "human persecution continues to be a threat to the viability of the wild eagle population.

Unless drastic measures are enforced to go after perpetrators, the Wildlife Act
9147 will be an inutile instrument in protecting the country's natural heritage."

Mayor stakes life, honor for aerial spray debate
By Jeffrey M. Tupas
Correspondent

MAYOR Rodrigo Duterte is willing to put his own life and honor on the line to protect the people against the effects of aerial spraying of pesticides in banana plantations as he backed the demand of various groups to immediately ban the practice.

"My life and honor. I will stake my life. I am worried about the young children because everyday they imbibe a certain amount of chemicals. They (companies) cannot fool me that the chemicals are harmless," Duterte said on the television program of his friend Pastor Apollo Quiboloy Wednesday night.

Duterte issued this statement as banana plantation owners contest that the pesticides used in aerial spraying are safe, just as they threaten a massive drop in employment if the ordinance banning aerial spraying were approved.

The companies also said they might consider moving out of the city if the City Government really pushes for the banning.

But Duterte is not threatened and says the plantations' relocation will be "good riddance".

He then reiterated his earlier challenge for the companies to present scientific data to counter the claim of the people that aerial spraying is harmful.

"Instead of threatening the city that they're going to relocate to somewhere else, why don't you just present scientific and empirical data to show that it is not deleterious? If it is safe, then why are there many complaints coming from the communities in the peripherals of the plantations... the damage in coconuts, skin rashes," Duterte said.

"I am as interested as anybody else to protect the economic activity of the city because it gives employment to the people, we have no quarrel about that. But I think foremost of my responsibility is to protect the health of the people and it comes first," Duterte added.

Duterte said banana plantation should convince him 100 percent that aerial spraying and the chemicals that they are using are 100 percent safe.

"You have to remedy the situation. I am ready to listen. If all you can do is threaten, then go out of Davao City," he said.

US firm eyes SMEs in Davao
September 9, 2006
Sunstar Online

AN AMERICAN firm that manufactures power backup systems is seeking partnership with small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Davao Region, offering products and services specifically designed for SME clients.

Emerson Network Power, which started its business operations in the Philippines in 2001, launched Friday a whole line of products and services that would address power protection needs, not only of large corporations, but also of other sectors, such as manufacturing, telecom, banking, and small and medium enterprises, which comprise more than 90 percent of businesses in Davao Region, and even individual personal computer users.

Emerson also launched its uptime partner program in Davao to better serve SMEs and other targeted partners, such as government agencies and business process outsourcing (BPOs).

"We want to keep their equipment work all the time...to boost their productivity and competitiveness," Emerson Network Power (Philippines) Inc. managing director Laurence Chan said.

He said Emerson intends to gain a bigger share of the market in the region, adding that they have embarked on similar product launches in Metro Manila in May and Cebu on Wednesday to tap SMEs, the fastest growing sector in the region.

"We would like to get a piece of that market," Chan said.

Emerson Network products are distributed in the Philippines by Lamco International Trading Co., but Friday's launch here was also meant to bring in more resellers.

Lamco is the country's largest IT distributors in the country, distributing computers and computer-related products to value-added resellers, systems integrators and retailers.

Emerson, on the other hand, provides a full spectrum of reliable power, connectivity, and precision cooling solutions for computers, communications, healthcare and industrial system.

Hitesh R. Prajapati, Emerson's channel business director, said the company has operations and distributorship in almost all parts of the world. It has three manufacturing plants in Asia, including one in Philippines located in Rosario, Cavite.

He said the company posted a sale $17.3 billion for fiscal year 2005.

Prajapati said he foresees Emerson's remarkable growth in the next few years as more sectors realize the need to protect equipment, products, and data from power supply interruptions.

He said the prices of Emerson Network Power products are "very competitive" but there are more value-added benefits in purchasing the systems.

Chan said customer care services, which Emerson has outsourced to Sykes, also provides 24-hour technical support to buyers.

He expressed confidence about the company's technology, saying the company has been consistently named among Forbes top 400 most admired companies in the world.

In 2005, Emerson also landed on no. 2 spot as world's most admired companies as listed by Fortune magazine, behind General Electric (GE). On the third spot was Sony.

Emerson Network's customers include Globe Telecom, Smart Communications, Dell, IBM, Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co., Nokia, Siemens and Citibank.

Davao Norte gets edge in agri-business
September 9, 2006
PIA

TAGUM CITY (9 September) -- Davao del Norte is making its way towards taking a key role in developing Mindanao into the country's agri-business center which President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo cited in her State of the Nation Address (SONA) as one of the super regions.

Among other major concerns, the provincial government takes focus on developing agriculture industries of the province.

Under Governor Gelacio P. Gementiza, the Provincial Agriculture Office (PAGRO) receives P5 million to develop a livestock production center and to intensify its animal dispersal program. PAGRO is set to distribute preferably to poor households, goats and cows.

Guesting in Kapihan sa Kapitolyo, PAGRO Chief Dominador Encarnacion said plans are being firmed up to locate the production center in a 10 hectare to 15 hectare lot in the municipality of Sto. Tomas.

The provincial government has also released P500,000 for the purchase of medical supplies to support the dispersal program.

"Dispersed animals are being prioritized," provincial veterinarian Dr. Renato Embate said in the same forum.

Dr. Embate also said that his office is also focusing on upgrading service to improve the breeding of farm animals through artificial insemination.

The provincial veterinary is paying special focus on improving carabao breed and increasing its population as well as enabling such farm animal to produce milk. "Carabao will no longer be just for the farms but also for milk production," Dr. Embate said.

On the other hand, Encarnacion said the province is giving continued focus on developing champions for high value crop production through its plant now pay later program. Priority crops are mango, cardaba banana, and durian.

He bared that a durian festival will be organized and be held in Tagum City this month to market durian produce by farmers availing of the plant now pay later program of the provincial government.

PAGRO is also facilitating initiative of the Australian Center for International Agriculture Research aimed at improving quality of mango grown in the Island Garden City of Samal.

Encarnacion said Samal mangoes would get at par in export quality with those grown in Guimaras.

"In Samal, pest infestation can be controlled because it can easily be contained," he said.

How Davao Became 'Little Tokyo'

A lot of things have changed since the 1930s, when Davao City was born out of fear of Japanese control. What remained, however, is the affinity to it by the Japanese, who remain the top tourists to the city.

By Cheryll D. Fiel
davaotoday.com

DAVAO CITY - DAVAO CITY - On a wall in one of the galleries of the Davao Museum has an interesting exhibit on how Davao became a city.

Accordingly, Davao became a city out of fear of Japanese control. The account says that "during the constitutional convention in 1934, one delegate in the person of Pantaleon Pelayo Sr. denounced the control of Japanese in Davao and their unlimited acquisition of land. The issue became a national concern so that Davao was made into a chartered city with appointive officials instead of elective officials." Many feared at the time that if officials were elected, Japanese-supported candidates would win.

In the '30s, Japanese control of Davao was said to be complete in Guinga district because they were already dictating both the economic and political life of the town. That Japan at that time was already on its way to become a world power also stoked those fears.

Shown in the other exhibits of Japanese life in the city are pictures of the first Japanese tycoons who made a killing in abaca plantations. These tycoons were said to be "responsible for giving recognition to abaca (manila hemp) as the world's strongest cordage fiber in the pre-war era."

The gallery also charted how the agribusiness economic life of the city was largely influenced by the plantation economy propagated by the Americans. It said that by 1912, some 50 American plantations had already been put up in choice lands around the Davao Gulf and that these American planters hired workers from indigenous tribes.

But later, however, the Americans found the work habits of the Lumads as unsatisfactory so that many of them were forced to recruit laborers from Luzon and the Visayas while others later engaged the services of Japanese laborers and contract workers for the plantations.

Interestingly, many of these Japanese workers had worked on the construction of the Kennon Road in Baguio. When their contracts expired, they were brought to Davao, where they became the first Japanese workers in the plantations.

Mention was also made of a Japanese man, Kyosaburo Ohta, who is said to be the agent or contractor to hire the said Japanese workers for the American plantations.

Ohta opened a store in Davao City and later started an abaca plantation of his own, paving the way for the Japanese dominance of plantation holdings and trade and commerce in the city. Little wonder then that there was a time in history, in the 1920s, when Davao was referred to as "Davaokuo" or Little Tokyo.

Perhaps because of this historial kinship, the Japanese are still drawn to Davao City even to this day. According to Department of Tourism data, most foreign visitors to the city are Japanese. (Cheryll D. Fiel/davaotoday.com)

Send rogue cops to Davao City — Duterte
By Edith Regalado
The Philippine Star 09/10/2006

DAVAO CITY — "Send them all here to Davao City and if they do not reform here, I will send them back as cargo."

Thus said Mayor Rodrigo Duterte as he urged the Philippine National Police (PNP) to send to this southern city scalawag Metro Manila policemen implicated in kidnappings, robberies, car thefts and other crimes.

For the feisty mayor, the involvement of police and military personnel in criminal syndicates is despicable.

"Here, you listen. Why would we endure you? Tell me why would we endure you? There are thousands of other qualified Filipinos who are eager to land jobs as policemen. We will replace you with them," he said.

Should the PNP, indeed, send scalawag Metro Manila law enforcers to his city, Duterte said he would make sure that they reform.

"They know what would happen to them here," he said, without elaborating.

Should any policeman get involved in criminal activities here, Duterte admonished them to better secure an insurance plan.

The city’s 3,000-strong police force is considered among the finest in the country, being a consistent recipient of the "Best City Police Unit" award nationwide.

Duterte, however, said that should any city policeman be charged while discharging his duty, he would be there for him.

"For the good policemen, I would be there for them. I would see to it that they are exonerated, even with those in the military who are performing well," he said.

Duterte has not only made sure that city policemen receive their monthly salaries on time, but has provided them with rice and grocery allowance.

For equipment in Davao plant rehab, Holcim seeks duty-free imports

Holcim Philippines yesterday said it is seeking duty-free importation of capital equipment for its P1-billion rehabilitation project for its main production line in its Davao cement plant, a statement said.

It has put forth an application with the BoI to seek for duty-free importation of capital equipment to replace those that have been damaged, the statement said.

Already, site preparation at the Davao plant has commenced, and the project to rehabilitate its main production line damaged by a silo collapse last December 2005 is well underway. The company has gotten approval and lined up the financing required to pursue the project for completion in mid-2007.

Upon the rehabilitation of the main line in Davao, Holcim will mothball the production line which has been re-commissioned to make up for the production outage.

The company noted that its investment comes at a time when the industry is still waiting for the turnaround in demand to occur.

Cement demand has been soft since 1998, when the market slumped by 13 percent following the onset of the Asian financial crisis. In the succeeding seven years, demand has declined every year except in 2002.

The outlook for this year 2006 remains to be one of zero or even negative growth, despite recent announcements by the government to pump-prime the economy with a much more aggressive level of infrastructure spending.

Holcim Philippines continues to pursue programs aimed at making its plants operate efficiently and according to world — class environmental standards. In anticipation of an eventual economic upturn, it has allotted funds to keep even its shutdown lines in good working condition.

In addition to the Davao plant, the company operates fully-integrated cement manufacturing facilities in La Union, Bulacan, and Misamis Oriental. The Bulacan plant has an extra production unit with an annual capacity of 0.8 million tons that has also been shut down since 1998.

"Continuing to invest in our spare capacity is what gives us confidence to adjust very quickly to positive changes in the demand landscape. The constant infusion of resources allows us to re-activate our shutdown line in Bulacan, just as we were able to bring into operations our Davao unit within a few months," Paul O’Callaghan explained.

Investments by the company are also channeled towards updated state-ofthe-art technology that ensures consistent quality cement. Environment and safety measures that go beyond complying with local regulations are likewise supported with substantial resources each year. (BCM)

so don, wa nila gitabunan. some mistakes of some contractors/builders as what happened in manila's esteros is cover it for added property. realizing that water flows to some lower ground due to gravity, if not that will cause flooding and etc.

Actually, di lang yon, bai. Swamps are recharge areas of acquifers. If you drain it or cover it, then eventually it will dry up your underground supply and dry up your wells, unless it's a part of a bigger acquifer. There's a more popular swamp or wetland in Toril owned by the Iñigos. But I think it's now owned by the Ayalas. It was a natural habitat for migratory birds (or ducks). Remember the Davao postcards with the mallards (?)? I think it has already dried up.

You mean BTC or Banilad Town Center? Robinson Supermarket is one of the locators within that strip mall.

Anyway, I hope i can post that article ive read in Entrepreneur magazine 2 years ago. They said that the malls in the future (which is today) would be smaller (like the SM hypermarts, Walter Marts in NCR, Walmart in US, etc) to cater that fast pace lifestyle of the younger Pinoys.

World's Longest Durian Roll
Manila Bulletin
September 11, 2006

THE Philippine Women’s College of Davao has successfully staged its bid for the Longest Durian Bread Roll measuring 503 meters in the Guinness Book of World Records as adjudicators from the government and private sectors validated the bid.

Officially listed as one of the activities during the week-long Kadayawan Festival held recently, which drew thousands of local and foreign tourists to Davao City, the adjudicators were led by Vice Mayor Luis Bonguyan, and City Councilors Susan Isabel Reta, Pilar Braga, Emmanuel Galicia and April Marie Dayap.

Joining them were Merly Cruz of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI); Antonio Partoza, president of Mindanao Federation of Fruits Growers; Letecia Competente, director of Davao Doctor College and Gene Bongayan of the Davao Convention and Visitors Corporation Bureau.

A full media coverage composed of ABS-CBN, GMA-7 and other local press witnessed the event which was held at the PWC grounds in Matina, starting from the lobby through the high school and elementary buildings, down the walkway, ending at the pavilion where the closing ceremonies was made.

Special guests were PWU board chairperson and president Dr. Helena Z. Benitez and Dr. Amelou B. Reyes, respectively who commended the organizers and students for their participation in this milestone feat.

Vice Mayor Bonguyan said this achievement will surely make it to the Guinness Book of World Records.

Amelia Bonifacio, vice president and COO of PWC said the 503-meter long durian bread roll was produced by four master bakers led by Patrina Legazpi with the participation of PWC students of Hotel and Restaurant Management and Food Technology.

As announced during the closing ceremonies by Maria Jose, a junior Education student, the bakers consumed 250 kilos of durian puree, 250 kilos of sugar, one pinch of potassium sorbate for every seven kilos of puree and one teaspoon of durian oil for every seven kilos of puree.

In producing the bread, they consumed 20 sacks of flour donated partly by Republic Flour Mills, two sacks of white sugar, 40 kilos of lard, 500 pieces of egg, two kilos of salt and 25 kilos of yeast.

The 60 students who served as bakers and assistants used aprons donated by Universal Robina Corporation.

The good-tasting longest durian bread roll easily vanished as the crowd of guests, PWC community and alumni tasted the bread. The Indak-Indak dancers, pupils of Lorega Elementary School and Isla Suerte, as well as other schools covered by PWC’s community outreach program also partook of the bread roll.

The world-breaking event was part of the 2nd Global PWU-PWC Global Congress attended by their alumni from here and abroad, the first of which was held in Las Vegas, USA.

Mayor seeks deportation of Korean
By Ben O. Tesiorna

MAYOR Rodrigo Duterte wants a Korean national deported after the mayor saw the man hitting his son with a club while playing golf.

In his Sunday television program, Duterte said he was pissed off by the foreigner's habit of hitting the boy whenever the minor committed mistakes at the green.

Duterte said this is not the first time that he saw the Korean hitting his son with a golf club on the head.

"In my anger I approached him and hit him as well in the head. The man tried justifying his action and so I hit him again," Duterte narrated.

The mayor said he then requested the Bureau of Immigration to deport the Korean national.

"In Davao, it's not the children who are being clobbered but their stupid fathers" Duterte said.

Sun.Star tried getting confirmation from Bureau of Immigration officials as to the identity of the Korean but in vain. It was not known also if the Korean was already deported.

Anti-terror agent asks for mayor's forgiveness

DAVAO CITY -- Self-proclaimed counter-terror expert Samson Macariola
asked forgiveness from Mayor Rodrigo Duterte for the problem he
caused with his claim that he was able to smuggle a bomb into an
airplane in Davao City.

Macariola sent a text message to the mayor through his aide,
Christopher Lawrence "Bong" Go, saying he was sorry for what
happened.

"I understand the stand of Mayor Duterte. I apologize and have same
high respect for him. Thank you very much for all the good things you
have helped (me with). Please tell the mayor, my integrity is intact
and would be always. Again my apologies," Macariola said in the text
message.

Macariola has found himself the object of outrage after he was
reported by a national daily to have sneaked in bomb components
inside a commercial plane to and from Davao City.

He hinted he will set things straight with the newspaper reporter who
wrote the article about his bomb caper.

"I cannot let Arlyn (dela Cruz) get away with her selfish intentions.
Truth will come out," Macariola's added.

Macariola, who was silent for a week after dela Cruz's report came
out in the Philippine Daily Inquirer, said in an interview that all
materials he brought into the plane were not real bomb materials,
rather replicas that he used for his workshop for law enforcers in
Davao City just before the Kadayawan Festival in August.

But the Inquirer said in response to Macariola's denials that dela
Cruz is sticking by her story, even saying she understands if
Macariola tries to deny what she wrote.

Whether the bomb materials were real or not, and whether dela Cruz
was telling the truth or not, Duterte said he is not just about to
forgive Macariola for what he has done.

"I'll hit this man if he comes to see me," Duterte said.

The mayor had already said he would no longer pay the P10,400 monthly
consultancy fee that Macariola is receiving from the City Government
as a consultant on firearms and ammunition management services.

The contract of services that Macariola signed with the City
Government was supposed to cover the second half of 2006, until
December 31. This is the second contract for the year, the first one
having covered the first half of 2006 for the same service.

At the same time, Duterte also lashed out at some senators who are
picking on him and President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo over Macariola's
alleged security breach.

"You piss me off guys, you act as if you're intelligent when you are
all dumb. It's really appropriate for the Senate to be abolished,"
Duterte said during his Sunday television program.

Duterte said the problem started with Macariola's false claims before
dela Cruz.

He said the reporter would have not been interested in such story had
Macariola not claimed that the bomb he sneaked in through the airport
security was real.

"It behooves upon the idiot to come up to me and to the nation to
explain things," Duterte said.

Earlier, Duterte expressed perplexity over why Macariola came out
with such claims to a reporter, saying he can only come up with three
reasons: first is that Macariola craves recognition, second is he
wants to set standards for airports, and the third, "pure hubris"
or "hinambog."

Any experiment on security should be done under controlled condition,
Duterte said, and doing it all by himself placed everyone in
jeopardy.

This is the same concept as the resource centres here in Canada funded by the Federal Gov't and run by NGOs. You can use internet at least 1 hr.each time, fax (local), photo copy, read news (for job openings), ask assistance for job search, help in seeking study/skill upgrade funding, help in resume writing, etc., etc. Very helpful to new immigrants who are in the job market.

By EMMIE V. ABADILLA

With over half of the Information Communication Technology market already outside Manila, IBM Philippines Inc. is shifting its focus to Davao, the ICT hub of Mindanao.

"We believe there is business to be made in Davao," stressed Joaquin E. Quintos IV, IBM Philippines Inc. President. "The great bulk of the opportunities here will be the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). This will also rebalance growth in the country."

"Formerly, our approach was Manila-centered," Carolyn V. Andaya, Country Manager for Cross Industry Sector confirmed. But now, "We are committed to the Davao and Cebu market and people will see a more aggressive IBM presence here. We are expanding our business partner channels and tripling our headcount."

At present IBM has an established network of 65 partners in the South and forges partnerships with independent software vendors. Nationwide, the company has over 200 authorized service centers.

IBM is bringing innovation-based business strategies through all its products and service offerings for Davao SMEs to speed time-to-market, reduce the risk of obsolescence and provide early warning of potential business disruption.

"Innovation must be the heart of strategy formulation," Quintos explained. "Innovation shapes, alters and defines the very nature of businesses. It is no longer an implementation issue."

At the same time, IBM makes both its software and hardware affordable, giving value for money and offering both leasing services as well as financing.

"We help companies implement new systems and integrate it with technology that is already there. We help them re-use what they have. It’s a good place for SMEs to start," added Faire Ann C. Co. IBM Software Group Country Manager.

Mindanao’s retail sector is fast employing ICT to speed up processes. Establishments such as NCC, Country Market and the Gaisano malls use IBM hardware for their back office functions and IBM terminals for their front office ones.

They use local Filipino software to manage their inventories better, file their sale reports earlier and make the accounting of their financial reports more accurate.

Before, "They used to do everything manually," Quintos noted.

Steve Irwin

SYDNEY (Reuters) - A private funeral service was held for Australian TV naturalist Steve Irwin on Saturday and he will be buried at his family's zoo in the northern state of Queensland, local media reported.

Irwin's father, Bob Irwin, had declined a government offer for a state funeral for his son.

Irwin, known as the "Crocodile Hunter" after his popular TV documentaries which aired around the world, was killed six days ago by a stingray barb to the chest while diving on Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

After the funeral service his body was taken to his family's Australia Zoo wildlife park, where he is expected to be buried, local media reported on Sunday.

Irwin, 44, had flirted with death many times in his "Crocodile Hunter" documentaries, seen by 200 million people, wrestling with some of the world's most dangerous creatures.

News of Irwin's death clogged Internet news sites and drew tributes from around the world. Prime Minister John Howard interrupted parliament to pay tribute to him, saying he was distressed by the loss of a remarkable Australian.

Egyptian ‘business experts’ here in DAVAO on study mission today
September 11, 2006
Mindanao Times Online

A group of business experts from Egypt is set to arrive in the city today as part of its study missions to Southeast Asia.

Trade Assistant Regional Director for the Davao Region Marizon Loreto said the city was among those identified by the group in its study mission to the Asian region.

“They (the group) are here to study our development services we extend to our small and medium enterprises,” Loreto said. The visit will also allow the trade mission to look at the different investment models in the city and some trade opportunities that will be presented by Loreto’s office and other agencies of government and representatives of the business sector, she added.

Among the areas that the trade mission will look into are successful approaches and programs providing non-financial business development services supporting small and medium enterprises, models of the delivery of these services on a cost-recovery basis, government policies and mechanisms to enhance small and medium enterprises growth specifically on exports and taxation, gender equality and other related issues, areas of access to finance particularly for women entrepreneurs, networking to sustain the development services and models of capacity development of these services.

Members of the group are top officials of Egypt whose main functions are developing businesses, including Norman Boukhalife of the Canadian International Development Agency, the funder of the project. Based on the briefer of the visit, the mission to Southeast Asia of the Egyptians “is to enhance the individual professional’s experience and the project’s collective knowledge involving the successful delivery of non-financial service models that maybe adapted to the Egyptian content as well as identifying potential linkages.”

The briefer said the visit was part of the Business Development Support Project, a project funded by the Canadian International Development Agency and executed by the Association of Canadian Community Colleges.

“(This project) aims to play a role in the development of non-financial services for SMEs (small and medium enterprises) in Egypt through working with businessmen/women and youth associations, investors association, universities, ministries and government agencies,” it pointed. The project will also focus on promoting opportunities through SME support with “an emphasis on women and youth,” it added.

HK-listed South Sea Petroleum sells 48% of RP unit for $ 36M
Manila Bulletin
September 11, 2006

HONG KONG (XFN-ASIA) - South Sea Petroleum Holdings Ltd (SSPH) said US financial investor RTM Financial Corp has agreed to buy for $ 36 million a 48 percent stake in South Sea Petroleum (Philippines) Corp (SSP Philippines), a wholly-owned subsidiary of the company.

SSPH company secretary Lam Lee Yu said all the proceeds from the sale are to be used in the Philippine unit's oil exploration project at the Agusan-Davao Basin in Davao.

SSPH is currently looking for crude oil and gas in a 748,000 hectare area at the Agusan-Davao Basin under a service contract with the Philippine government.

''The oilfields are in the exploration state which may involve a large amount of capital injection. The transaction can bring in working capital to the oilfields, while the company (SSPH) remains controlling shareholder of SSP (Philippines),'' said Lam.

Between March and December last year, SSP Philippines incurred an audited net loss of $ 360,000, he said.

Lam said SSPH will issue new shares which will enable RTM financial Corp to own 48 percent of SSPH.

Lam did not disclose the number of new shares to be issued by SSPH nor the subscription price.

New traffic equipment up and running by December
Monday, September 11, 2006

A modern traffic lights program will be something Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and the commuting public will be proud of come December.
This is the assurance given by the project’s contractor in an interview with Mirror over the weekend.

The traffic signaliza-tion program is a product of a three-year study, said Efren Abraqtique, CEO of Abratique Consultants.

“There were so many geometric considerations and we considered the future vehicle movement with this traffic project of Davao,” he said.

Duterte had announced that the new program will be functional by Decem-ber.

Abratique said “we want the people of Davao to be happy with the project, and that’s what Mayor Duterte wants us to do.”

“We began the study on the first month of his second term in 2004. He had instructed us to study the vehicle movement, the motion of vehicles,” Abratique said.

But he added that “we need to educate people and the motorist about the project to maximize its importance,” he added.

The most important component of the project is not the expensive equip-ment, according to Antonio Llamas, Duterte’s consul-tant for special concerns. “It will be information dissemination (in order to) protect this technology,” he said.

“Public acceptability is very critical here, so we need to educate and in-form our people about this project,” he added.

The bulk of the equip-ment arrives today from the US. Abratique says the hardware has the same standard as the one used in the city of Los Angeles in the US.

“Underground work is almost halfway done. The cables and wires will be in place as soon as possible,” he added.

your feedbacks are quite interesting... "smoking ears and noses".... really! but on the other hand. since i brought up the topic about the bombings that happened twice in davao city. it all came very obvious that the government is really biased. there was this big explosion in mandaue city, cebu. and the media played it as a mere "gas leak" im just so very sorry to davao.. but i know that if this kind of "accident" happened in davao city. the media (and the government) will really divulge the truth and call it a "terrorist attack", but since it happened in cebu, its time for a cover-up game.... and rule it as a mere "gas leak" but oh well, there will be more damage to the national economy (and reputation) if they release the real situation to the public since it happened in cebu, sorry davao.... big kids really gets the big pie.... all because the lady loves cebu!

We are aware here that your laughing from ear to eat that none of these sinister things come about in your barrio-well like I used to say before these things are ways for some disgruntled people/group to send their message loud and clear and they choose big/progressive cities to launch their attacks which your barrio is nowhere near those distinctions. Get it?

Haha Join ako! :bash: What's this guy smoking? Nakakalungkot isipin. We're already behind other countries, yet we fight amongst ourselves.

Why are some Pinoys so backward thinking as to bash other cities? Misplaced and inappropriate pride? Is it the lack of decent education? Lack of attention? Or is it envy - realizing that Davao isn't just about progress, but also about having that soul that brings Davaowenyos together. Though, I have to admit, a city with a soul like Davao's is truly rare. That's why I love this city! :) (And I love Cebu, too. For the record.)

Let's all move forward together and leave these poor useless cavemen alone.

The Philippine Eagle is a faithful mate. It has been observed that this bird usually prefers a monogamous lifestyle. It usually builds its nest on towering tropical trees about 80 feet above the ground (sufficient enough for it to have a good view over its territory).

 ... i am an exception.... I'm polygamous

Philippine Eagles breed between August and January, do aerial courtships and mate in or near their nest. The female lays one egg every two years and both parents alternately incubate the egg for about 60 days until it hatches. The eaglet fledges within 150 days and becomes independent at 18 months at which time the parents drive it out of their 60 to 100 kilometer radius territories.

...... oh...it's breeding time
