Rajah_Soliman September 11th, 2006, 11:33 PM Brunei-Davao flight to start next year
GENERAL SANTOS CITY -- Direct flight between Brunei and Davao City may materialize early next year, a top government envoy recently said.
Retired general Efren Abu, the country's special envoy to the Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysian, Philippines-East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-Eaga), said the government has initiated steps to enhance physical linkages of Mindanao to the rest of the growth area's member countries.
"Royal Brunei Airlines hinted that they will start early next year although we asked them to start (in) December," the former chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines said.
In 2003, President Gloria Arroyo urged Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei to open a direct flight of the Royal Brunei Airlines to Davao City because of their proximity.
Brunei is only 45 minutes by air travel to Davao City.
Aside from the Brunei-Davao flight, Abu also announced the impending resumption of the Zamboanga-Sandakan and the Davao-Kota Kinabalu-Brunei Darussalam air routes.
Presidential Assistant for Mindanao Jesus Dureza said Mindanao's current trade and tourism linkages to Eaga are being sustained by direct sea links between Zamboanga and Sandakan of Sabah, Malaysia as well as direct flights between Davao and Manado in Indonesia.
Dureza said the Zamboanga-Sandakan route would be serviced by local airline Asian Spirit and Filipino-Russian joint venture Mosphil Aero, which launched its domestic operations (Zambonga-Jolo) last week.
Abu said the Davao-Manado air route would soon increase to two flights a week.
To lure airline operators in the Eaga, Abu said the government reduced all air service fees by 50 percent for airlines traveling to Mindanao and Palawan from Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

Sunstar Davao
Sept 12, 2006
DAVAO City bags three awards in the just concluded Philippine TravelMart held as SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City last week.
Delegation head, Patricia Melizza B. Ruivivar, said the city won first place in three categories: the Best Cultural Performance by Maharlika, Bituin ng Kasuotang Pilipino by Hiyas 2005 Charisse Revilla, and Best Designer by Benjie Uy.
Ruivivar said the city was also among the finalists for the Best Booth category.
The city bested 14 other regions who joined the event.
The city's participation was made possible by the support of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.
Duterte meanwhile congratulated the city's delegation for their achievement despite the limited financial resources provided by the City Government.

abskess September 12th, 2006, 05:00 AM Patrol 117 -Davao aids in capture of murder suspects
By Allan C. Abais
Mindanao Times
Sept 12, 2006
Two suspects in a murder case in Taguig Metro Manila were arrested by members of the Pagadian City Police through the assistance call receive by the Patrol 117- Davao on Sunday morning. F01 Elsie Ponce Bautista, duty phone operator of police assistance Patrol 117-Davao, identified the suspects as Roldan Sta. Ines and his son Jeoffrey. She said the two persons were wanted at Taguig, Metro Manila with Criminal Case No. 121867 at Branch 166, RTC Metro Manila for a murder case and kidnapping. Bautista said that at about 6 a.m., Monday, she received an assistance call from a woman identified as Melanie Belardo of Gatuc Street, Gatas District, Pagadian City, requesting her for an immediate arrest of the two suspects. She said she immediately transmitted the request to Patrol 117 in Manila to verify the report. She said she was able to confirm the two suspects were indeed facing criminal charges at a court in Manila. “Kinompirma ng Manila na mga wanted nga ‘yong mag-ama kaya ni request ko agad na tawagan ang Pagadian City Police,” Bautista said. Senior Supt. Norman V. Pinion, Regional Director of the Bureau of Fire Protection, Region X1, commended Bautista’s effort that resulted to the immediate arrest of the two wanted persons. “Kadalasan sa mga assistance call na ma-receive namin ay out of town calls, dahil dito sa Davao meron na tayong 911,” Bautista said, adding that Patrol 117 is a nationwide police assistance call.

davaoeagle September 12th, 2006, 05:24 AM HK-listed South Sea Petroleum sells 48% of RP unit for $ 36M
HONG KONG (XFN-ASIA) - South Sea Petroleum Holdings Ltd (SSPH) said US financial investor RTM Financial Corp has agreed to buy for $ 36 million a 48 percent stake in South Sea Petroleum (Philippines) Corp (SSP Philippines), a wholly-owned subsidiary of the company.
SSPH company secretary Lam Lee Yu said all the proceeds from the sale are to be used in the Philippine unit's oil exploration project at the Agusan-Davao Basin in Davao.
SSPH is currently looking for crude oil and gas in a 748,000 hectare area at the Agusan-Davao Basin under a service contract with the Philippine government.
''The oilfields are in the exploration state which may involve a large amount of capital injection. The transaction can bring in working capital to the oilfields, while the company (SSPH) remains controlling shareholder of SSP (Philippines),'' said Lam.
Between March and December last year, SSP Philippines incurred an audited net loss of $ 360,000, he said.
Lam said SSPH will issue new shares which will enable RTM financial Corp to own 48 percent of SSPH.
Lam did not disclose the number of new shares to be issued by SSPH nor the subscription price.

MMGH is a medical services concept that espouses to cater to medical needs of not only the affluent sector of the society but also the marginalized segment.
This cooperative hospital concept was hatched and had its humble beginnings in Davao City spearheaded by a group of true-blue Davaoeno physicians led by Dr. Tionko if I'm my memory serves me right.

@waway aka gravy! see didnt i told ya! They have posted their plans early this year to go through with their expansion. It's just that, they were still securing some financial assistance. 19 storeys? hmmmmmmmmm ok na! but im still waiting for Dusit Hotel which will be around 30 storeys, aight dinabaw? :)
Re Medical Tower - though dugay nasugdan, i firmly believe na sa Davao, once naay plan - matuman jud (bahala og dugay). When I sent a letter to Joji Ilagan which she posted sa Mindanao Times, I whined about the planned projects set by the local government since i was still on my early teens. little did i know that these projects are starting to materialize as we speak. 5 years ago they were talking about the Greenbelt, the Chinatown, the LRT, the business parks, and the Sta Ana Development Plan. 5 years later (this year) most of these projects are already on the pipeline. Greenbelt will be open this December. The Chinatown (second chinatown of this country) was opened last year, the business parks - (Pryce was established more than 5 years ago) Riverfront Corporate City are now kicking with developments and proposals, LRT study is now being handled by a private firm, Sta Ana Development - well eto na lang hinihintay ko..ehehehhehehe

Davao City to Saudi for investments in BPO Industry
Government officials and businessmen comprising the Davao City trade mission to Saudi Arabia on November 10 to 16 are expected to woo Saudi investors to the city’s Business Process Outsourcing sector.
“We will be encouraging Saudi investors to invest in ICT which is one of the priority investment sectors being promoted by the Department of Trade and Industry XI,” said Teolulo Pasawa, center director of the National Economic Research and Business Assistance Center.
Pasawa said Saudi investors may be willing to invest in the city’s ICT sector, particularly the Business Process Outsourcing sector which is the trend today.
BPO is the method by which highly developed countries outsource their businesses to third world countries like the Philippines and India due to cheap labor and other costs.
“There are plenty of businesses in Saudi and their investors can set up a BPO here to serve the Saudi business community who may need to outsource their call center or other services,” he said.
Davao City is one of the most sought after areas for BPO because of the cheap operating costs in the area. BPO can be further sub-divided into call center operations, help desks, medical transcription, and digital animation.
“One of the biggest players in Davao’s BPO sector is GCom which foresees a 450-seat call center,” Department of Trade and Industry IT officer Ariel Nengasca said. Only 250 seats have so far been operational and still expanding.
A BPO company is said to be a big player if its investment is P150 million or more. A call center is said to be a big player if it has a seating capacity for more than a hundred call center operators.
Nengasca said there are at least 20 small BPO players in the city, mostly in the areas of medical trans-cription and engineering and software development like the Association of Solution Integrators of Davao.
Other big players in the call center industry which are active in Davao are People Support and Link2Support.
Note: Link2Support will be opening its Davao operations within Damosa IT Park while PeopleSupport will be opening its headquarters at Luisa Square.

Davao Japanese Film Festival 2006!
The Philippine Nikkei-Jin Kai (PNJK) School of Davao and Mindanao Kokusai Daigaku (MKD), in coordination with the Consular Office of Japan in Davao, will be sharing to Davaoeños the essence of Japanese films in a film festival to be held during the week-long celebration of the RP-Japan Festival on August 30 to September 3.
The film festival called “Eiga Sai” will feature three classic Japanese films on Wednesday, August 30 at the Multi-Purpose Hall, 3rd floor of Mindanao Kokusai Daigaku (MKD) Building in Lanang, Davao City. The screening sche-dule is: “Memories of You” (9 a.m.), “Tora San Takes a Vacation” (1:30 p.m.), and “Uneasy Encounters” (4 p.m.). Admission is free and all films are subtitled in English.
According to Japa-nese Consul Koji Mitsui, the film festival is an opportunity for the people of Davao to have a better understanding of the life and culture of the Japanese as represented in the films. He added that the holding of Eiga Sai is the Consular Office’s contribution in the promotion of closer rela-tions between Filipinos and Japanese in this part of the country.
The RP-Japan Festi-val is an annual program of the PNJK and MKD to highlight the long standing friendship and cooperation between the Philippines and Japan. Dr. Nieto Vitto, Dean of College of MKD, said this year’s festival, which focuses on revitali-zing cultural exchanges, is made more meaningful because of the celebration of Philippine-Japan Friend-ship Year.
Aside from the film festival, this year’s RP-Japan Festival will also feature a photo exhibit on “The World Heritage Sites in Japan” by Kazuyoshi Miyoshi, and Japan’s classical play called Noh. The Noh performance is titled “The Coffee Shop Within the Play” (Kapihan sa Loob ng Isang Dula) directed by the notable Dr. Naohiko Umewaka, an Associate Professor at the Shizuoka University of Arts and Culture. He is conducting Noh training at the University of the Philippines’ Center for Inter-national Studies.

PAL conducting studies for Davao - Japan, Davao - Hongkong, and Davao - South Korea flights
Philippine Air Lines (PAL) continues to gather data for evaluation on plans to establish new air routes from Davao City to Japan, South Korea, and Hong Kong.
PAL senior assistant vice president for Mindanao Atty. Domingo Duerme said if plans push through, PAL will create direct Davao-Hong Kong, Davao-Japan, and Davao-South Korea flights via Manila.
Duerme said data in terms of travel frequency from travel agents, air transportation industry data, and historical figures are significant factors to consider in pursuing the proposed new routes.
“PAL should create three flights a day for the proposed new destinations to sustain the market,” he added.
Duerme said of the three destinations, PAL sees heavy traffic in the South Korea market because of the increasing number of Korean nationals visiting Davao.
He said PAL has ordered a number of aircraft as part of its expansion plans. If the ongoing study shows positive results, PAL will pursue the proposed new routes for Davao upon the arrival of the new aircraft, he said.
Duerme said PAL Davao experienced a better load factor this year compared to that of last year with 80 percent during lean periods and 95 percent during peak periods.
At present, PAL serves 60 to 100 passengers during its first flight bound for foreign destinations, Duerme said.

Brunei-Davao flight to start next year
Direct flight between Brunei and Davao City will materialize early next year, a top government envoy recently said.
To lure airline operators in the Eaga, Abu said the government reduced all air service fees by 50 percent for airlines traveling to Mindanao and Palawan from Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

tj_brewed September 12th, 2006, 05:44 PM Hey folks, the World Christian Gathering on Indigenous People (WCGIP) is in the city particularly at the Waterfront Insular Hotel Davao. The seven-day gathering started yesterday.
^^ Davao - Host of The World's IP-Christians Gathering 2006
Following New Zealand, Australia, Hawaii, and Sweden, Davao City is this year’s venue for the 5th World Christian Gathering on Indigenous People (IP) slated this September 11 to September 17.
This city, known for its richness in culture, is chosen to host the event with an expected 1,500 participants; 500 of which are local IPs, 500 are local non-indigenous, and 500 foreign indigenous people coming from 60 different countries.
Past gatherings showed how the different tribal groups from their respective countries express themselves by showcasing their very own ways in worshipping, teaching, pasturing, evangelism, prophecy, and discussion.
Terry Le Blanc, National Director of My People International who is also one of the organizers for the event bared what a big opportunity it is for the Philippines to show what each and every IP community possesses and then to share it to the whole world.
Organizers of the event believe that the most effective way to reach the IPs who are lost spiritually is through the help of the local people themselves.
“One of the goals of this gathering is to recognize and restore the indigenous people by becoming united despite adversities through Christianity.” Managing Director of Tribal Mission Foundation International Ma. Elena Bicaldo said.
Every tribe (whether local or foreign) will get to display their cultural instruments with an exhibit area to be set up at Waterfront Insular Hotel. Participants will also get to see all participating tribes perform their cultural dances, songs, and rituals.
Besides performances and presentation, participants will also get to discuss wide-range of issues like culture and development, indigenous education, environment, indigenous farming, functional literacy, culture and Christianity, and other relevant issues.
The lead organization for the Philippines in organizing the event is the Tribal Mission Foundation Inc (TMFI), a development organization founded in 1986 by several Christian businessmen in Davao city with a vision of addressing the destitute condition of the IPs.
It has evolved into a development organization by training indigenous tribes and urging cross-cultural community workers to reach out to marginalized communities.
Its advocacy includes community based education designed to advance literacy of adults and children, sustainable agriculture by introducing natural farming, tribal workers intensive training, as well as mountain-movers training.
TMFI, as the lead organization for the gathering, urges the support of local government units and the business sector to pour in donations for the full subsidy of Filipino IPs in the said event.
“It is about time to empower our IPs by giving them their identity and recognizing them as important citizens in our country.” Bicaldo said.

National Youth Day to gather 10,000 delegates in Davao
AT LEAST 10,000 youths are expected to gather for the National Youth Day in Davao City slated on November 8 to 12 with this year’s theme “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
Dennis Villegas of the National Youth Day event said 2,000 are expected to come from Luzon, 2,000 from Visayas, and 6,000 from Mindanao.
Villegas said this will be the first time that Mindanao, particularly Davao City, will host the event.
“I encourage everybody to join. There will be great challenges. Even if it’s a Catholic event, it is also open to others,” Villegas said during Thursday’s I-Speak forum.
Villegas said Protestants have signified their interest to join the event even if such is lead by the Catholic Church.
He added that there will also be 10 Muslim representatives to the event.
National Youth Day media relations and promotions chair Cheryl Bilo said the holding of the National Youth Day aims to gather all young people in the country, deepen the faith of the participants to the Lord, and show how the Church love and care for the youth.
Villegas said there will be discussions on faith, nationalism, inter-religious dialogue and others. On evenings, he added, there will be prayer festivals.
“This will also help boost the tourism industry,” Villegas said.
Villegas said there will be three catechetical sites — at the Holy Cross of Davao College, University of Immaculate Concepcion and Ateneo de Davao University.
The opening and closing of the event will be held at the SM grounds.
tj_brewed September 12th, 2006, 05:53 PM ^^ yet pessimists doubt if Davao is a tourism hub?
Davao to the World!
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/dvonyts.jpg
The staging of the 25th ASEAN Tourism Forum last January 13-21, 2006 placed this emerging megacity in the world tourism map. It turned Davao City into an international tourism hub as some 3,000 delegates from 6 continents around the world came over and participated in the ASEAN's prestigious international event.
"Davao has all the infrastructure - a world-class international airport, good roads, hotels and resorts, natural attractions, great food, effective local government, the best security system in the country, peace-loving and law-abiding people, and everything else to make a fine menu for tourism," Durano said. "So now is the time to present Davao to the world, and ATF served as its grand entrance."
Citing the city as the next pillar of Philippine tourism, Durano said it was President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's personal choice that ATF 2006 was held here.
Also the gateway and capital of the East Asian Growth Area (EAGA), which comprises Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines, Davao City is an ideal tourist destination with its diverse cultures, beautiful beaches, awesome mountain resorts, fantastic dive spots, and natural resources.
“There is a charm in Davao that is not seen elsewhere and this is captured by the city's locals,” Durano explained.
The ATF is a cooperative regional effort to promote the Southeast Asian region as one tourist destination and support the individual tourism pursuits of the ASEAN's 10-member nations -- Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

tj_brewed September 13th, 2006, 04:35 AM Anybody got a pic of Mt Tipolog? The so called - Davao's Lost Volcano?
IT COULD have been one perfect day to stay home and rest as the clouds masked the sun that Saturday morning. But the fine day failed to stop Ian Tiotingco.
For Tiotingco, 24, resisting the lure of a tempting idle day was nothing compared to the pleasure of finding and conquering the country's so called lost volcano, Mt. Tipolog in Barangay Tawan-Tawan in Baguio District.
While Mt. Apo, the country's highest mountain, constantly earned the interest of mountaineers and environmentalists, Mt. Tipolog, which is a lot older than Mt Apo, is relatively unheard of by many.
This has served Mt Tipolog well, said officials from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. No litter can be found along the trails of the mountain.
Experts recently found the crater of the mountain and discovered that Mt. Tipolog is actually a volcano. For this, Mt Tipolog is now called the lost volcano.
"This is enough for me to give up one good day and sweat myself up. Besides, this is more than just climbing Mt. Tipolog… this is my way of punching in a statement," Tiotingco said.

Davao Riverfront is master planned to be a self-sufficient city within a city. Corporate offices in a well-secured 45-hectare Business Park and 20 hectare residential estate. Brilliantly conceived, seamlessly constructed business center point. The ideal place to address your business in Davao City.
At the heart is a themed commercial center with restaurants, arcades, boutiques, theatres, and other spots for leisure, recreation and entertainment, as well as hospital and supermarket. Also located within the Park is an exclusive school, St. Paul's College, a Shopping Mall, and Rancho Palos Verdes Country Club.
Sinjin P. September 13th, 2006, 05:36 AM ^ Thanks Tj! Hmm, kamusta ang progress niani? Naa nay gasukod ug tukod ug mga buildings?
tj_brewed September 13th, 2006, 05:51 AM ^^ Sta Lucia is developing it by zone. The necessary facilities are already in place (Underground Drainage System, water system, electricity, roads, etc).
They have already completed the tourism complex:
- Crocodile Park
- Davao Wildwater Adventure
- Butterfly Garden
- Riverwalk
St Paul will be constructing its facility this 2007. The construction was supposed to start this 2006 however Speed City (into car racing) requested if they (St. Paul) can move it to 2007 due to their racing events for 2006. Speed City is using the whole business park for their car racing events. (Speed City is owned by the Dizons right? Land owner of Riverfront)
Sta Lucia has already applied and been given a permit by the City Council to start with their 2nd phase of development this year which is its residential zone.
Sta lucia is planning to develop its commercial zone this year however with the skyscrapers/highrise buildings, it depends on the lot owners to when they will build or develop their properties (same agreement with Cebu Holdings and its investors in Cebu Business Park).
tj_brewed September 13th, 2006, 06:05 AM ^^ currently, IT firms and multinational companies have Pryce Business Park as their corporate address in Davao.
The difference between Sta Lucia Realty & Development Inc. and Pryce Development Corp. is that Pryce built their buildings immediately right after they have developed this business park.

Arroyo backs Mindanao ICT gab
SUPPORTING the thrust of the government to open up more cyber-corridors and promoting the establishment of business process outsourcing opportunities in Mindanao, the 5th Mindanao ICT Congress gets the support of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
Malacañang Memorandum Circular 113, which was signed on September 8, authorized all information and communication technology (ICT) professionals in government offices to attend the 5th Mindanao Information & Communications Technology Congress slated in Cagayan de Oro City on September 20 to 22.
"This is a very good development for the organizers of the Congress," said Oro Chamber president and congress host Ruben A. Vegafria.
"The memorandum is our clear indication that we have the backing of our highest officer of the land and therefore it gives us encouragement to really work hard in ensuring that it will be a success," he said.
"We would like to thank Hon. Jojo Pupos, our presidential assistant for Northern Mindanao. He was instrumental in presenting the Congress to Arroyo," added Vegafria.
The Malacañang memorandum is seen to boost participation in the 5th MICT Congress, which will feature an Exhibition, Job Fair, and Special Events on September 20 and 21 at The Atrium of Limketkai Mall and the Congress Proper on September 21 to 22 at the Grand Caprice Restaurant and Convention Center.
ICT innovators and collaborators from business, government and non-government organizations, and the academe will be gathered in the biggest ICT event for 2006 in Mindanao as it highlights the role of the island in the country's positioning as Asia's e-services hub.
The 5th MICT Congress is organized by the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation Inc. (Oro Chamber) and the Mindanao Business Council (MinBC). It is co-hosted by the Cagayan de Oro City Government and Regional Information Technology & E-Commerce Committee of Region-Northern Mindanao.
The event is co-presented by Globe Innove and PLDT Business Solutions.
For inquiries and Congress registration, please contact the Oro Chamber office through telephone numbers (088) 856-3764 and (08822) 726-492.

Cyber corridor carries ICT services nationwide
THE cyber corridor from Baguio through Cebu to Davao runs along a digital backbone and carries Information and Communications Technology (ICT) services to every municipality.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo pointed out that when the government launched its digital highway program in 2001, less than 2,000 Filipinos were employed in call centers.
"Today, five years later, over 200,000 are employed in business processing outsourcing (BPOs) and we expect this figure to grow over one million by the end of this decade," the President said.
The Philippines is now recognized as the second most preferred location for BPO operations after India, while whole semi-conductors export is on track to increase by 10 percent annually.
The President also thanked Congress for the enactment of the bill promoting the use of internet protocol that will dramatically cut down the cost of telephone calls across continents and "bring Filipinos closer to their loved ones."
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo vowed that every step would be taken to harness the force of ICT to lift the quality of Philippine education and build a brighter future for the Filipinos.
She said the Department of Education and the Commission for ICT is crafting a national ICT program for teachers, or the National ICT Competency Standard for teachers to be implemented in all public high schools.
Majority of the public high school teachers should fulfill the requirements of the ICT standard by 2010, she added.

Dabawenyos urged to join international coastal cleanup
By Barbara Carla R. Quiero
DAVAO Councilor Leo Avila III urged fellow government officials and Dabawenyos to participate in the 21st International Coastal Cleanup Day this weekend.
Avila, who chairs the City Council committee on environment and natural resources, is calling fellow members of the City Council to join in the whole-day coastal cleaning.
Avila said Councilors Susabel Reta and Dante Apostol have already committed to help in the coastal clean up while Councilors Danilo Dayanghirang and Peter Laviña are regular participants.
According to Avila, all forms of debris could be traced to one source and that is the people.
"Every person disperses a half kilo of garbage a day. The more people, the more garbage and so the greater effort is needed to manage garbage," Avila said during a press conference Tuesday.
He said they are expecting around 8,000-10,000 to participate in the coastal cleanup.
Coastal Marine Management Division chief Crisanto Estabillo of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources said the coastal cleanup is aimed to educate and empower the people to become a part of marine debris solution and data collection for planning and legislation.
This year's theme of the 21st Coastal Clean Up Day is "Ang Malinis na Katubigan at Kapaligiran ay Pamana Natin sa Susunon na Salinlahi."

City's coastal cleanup to focus on waterways
By Barbara Carla R. Queiro
THE city will celebrate the 21st International Coastal Cleanup Day on Saturday with focus on creeks, rivers and canals of Davao City, said Councilor Leo Avila III.
Avila, who chairs the City Council committee on environment, said since water from creeks, rivers and canals that flows towards the sea have contributed to the pollution of the sea water and its shores, this year's coastal cleanup will focus on these waterways.
Avila, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), and City Environment and Natural Resources Office have identified 18 rivers, creeks, and canals in the city to be the sites of the whole day coastal cleanup.
"Since water from the creeks, rivers and canals go to the sea, we make them as our focus this year to prevent debris from reaching into the gulf," Avila said in a press conference Tuesday.
Among them is the Leon Garcia Creek, Lasang River, Bunawan River, Sasa Creek, Isla Verde Creek, San Pedro Creek, Davao River, Lubugan River and canal near the Tesda.
Coastal Marine Management Division chief Crisanto E. Estabillo of the DENR said the flow of the coastal cleanup reporting starts with the cleanup volunteers to the DENR area coordinators, DENR regional office, DENR central office, and finally to the Ocean Conservancy.
Based on the report of the Ocean Conservancy, 59 percent of debris comes from beach resorts, 29 percent are smoking related, 8 percent are water waste from canals, creeks, and rivers, 3 percent from dumping, and 1 percent from medical personal hygiene.
Avila, meanwhile, said that in Davao City among the debris that are commonly found in the seawaters and its shores are plastics bags and cups, fishing nets and cigarette butts.

DOMESTIC and INTERNATIONAL Corporations operating in the Philippines will converge in Davao City for a two-day national convention and share their best practices of sustaining and improving quality and productivity in the work place.
(September 14, 2006 issue)
Davao City is synonymous to Conventions! Ang daming events ngayon sa Davao ah.....starting from ASEAN TOURISM FORUM to the upcoming NATIONAL YOUTH DAY! From January to December, everymonth may National and International Conventions being held in Davao! whew!
Global Davao September 13th, 2006, 09:58 PM kulang talga ng convention centers and hotels sa davao...
tj_brewed September 13th, 2006, 11:03 PM ^^ i will build one! ahahahahah kiddin......
lemme rephrase what u said " kulang NA talaga ng convention centers and hotels sa Davao" that is because of the increase of conventions being held in Davao. That's the reason why one local developer - Damosa Land is planning to build a convention center within Damosa Complex. Local hoteliers are starting to expand as well such as Grand Men Seng, Hotel Elena, and new players such as Viajero.
KulasKusgan September 13th, 2006, 11:42 PM Bai kulas, updated lagi ka sa balita sa CF-DAVAO, naa ka kaila didto? hmmmm... kinsa kaha? pm me nalang.. hehehe. :)

Mindanao, the troubled southern island of Philippines is about 350,000 sq miles. It is the second largest of the Philippines Islands. The island coastline is a puzzle of numerous peninsulas and deep bays , and it has several mountain ranges, mainly running from north to south. Mount Apo, the highest peak in the Philippines, rises from the Central Cordillera to a height of 9,695 ft. Viewed on a map, the northern Mindanao looks like an index-finger poiting accusingly at the rest of the Philippines. At its tip lies Surigao City the capital of Surigao del Norte province. It is the principal transport and communications center of the whole region and thus the gateway to Mindanao.
Camiguin Island is a small island with an area of 116 sq miles has some magnificient scenery to offer. Seven volcanoes crowd together in the middle of the island. The highest of them all is Hibok-Hibok, at 4,370 ft is still active. It is beautiful and threatening , it looms up behind the small capital town of Mambajao which almost obliterated by a major eruption in 1951. The damage it did on that occasion was bad enough. The eruption was visible from 100miles away and at least 500 people lost their lives in the cloud of gas that descended into the valley. http://img158.imageshack.us/img158/7940/camiguindivespotseu5.jpg
Davao City located to the southern Mindanao region, has almost 900,000 inhabitants is the largest city in Mindanao and the second largest city in the Philippines. Founded in the 19th century as Nueva Vergara, this metropolis on the Gulf of Davao is in fact one of the most widespread cities in the world, though it is true that only a small part of its 940 sq mile area is built up.

Philippine Eagle Nature Centre, the rare and endangered Philippine Eagles, endemic to the forests of Philippines, makes its home in this nature centre. Spread over a vast forest reserve this centre is also home to a wide variety of indigenous plants and species. Davao’s year-round fair climate is conducive to the cultivation of orchids. The pride of Davao, the waling-waling, is endemic to the region. Its mother plant was discovered by a German scientist upon the slopes of Mt. Apo.http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/5230/2911544788og4.jpg
Today, the waling-waling and other hybrids are propagated in the many orchid farms scattered across the countryside. The most well know farms are Yuhico Orchids Gardens in Greenhills, Derling Worldwide Orchid Corporation in Dumoy and the Puentespina Orchids Garden. http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/5458/davaowalingwalingorchidshq4.jpg

The western part of Mindanao is shaped like a giant handle, only connected to North Mindanao by a narrow neck of land separating Pagadian Bay to the south from Panguil Bay to the north. The mountainous peninsula of Zamboanga, with the provinces of Misamis Occidental, Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga del Sur is the only densely populated along the coast.
Dakak Beach Resort which is well known is located at Zamboanga del Norte close to a little town called Dapitan City. It lies on a romantic bay between high clifts, is luxurious and well-organised. The diving is good here, while landlubbers can go pan for gold inlands. scandinavian girl September 14th, 2006, 12:24 AM Fil-Am group adopts Philippine eagle
DAVAO CITY - The Filipino-American Council of Presidents-Kalayaan, an organization of Filipinos living in Chicago, has adopted a captive-bred eagle in simple ceremonies at the Philippine Eagle Center here.
Rey Sapnu, chairman of Fil-Am COP-Kalayaan, named the eagle "Kalayaan-Chicago." The 13-month-old eagle is the offspring of the prolific eagle pair Jag and Ka Brianne. It is the 18th of the 20 Philippine Eagle chicks bred and hatched in a span of 14 years under the Philippine Eagle Foundation’s Conservation Breeding program.
The population of the Philippine eagle, the world’s largest, thinned in the early 1070s due to rampant hunting. Sapnu said their organization’s desire to help in the conservation efforts began shortly after its founder Orly Bernardino visited the Philippine Eagle Center on invitation of the Department of Tourism last year.
Worried by the alarming plight of the eagle, Bernardino and Sapnu raised funds for their care in the southern Philippines. "It is important for us to help the country, even if we are so far away," Sapnu said.
COP-Kalayaan 65,000 Filipino members residing in Chicago supporting various projects in the Philippines. These projects include the improvement of schools, the rehabilitation of watersheds and an annual gift-giving to indigent children. Its biggest annual event, from which they got the group as well as the eagle’s name, is the Independence Day (Kalayaan) dinner ball.
"We’re still Filipinos no matter where we are that’s why we felt it important to protect this national symbol. We still need to work together to help the country," Sapnu added.
The Department of Tourism Davao assistant regional director, Roger Layson, witnessed the signing of the adoption agreement. He lauded the Chicago group for its effort to "come home, rediscover what we have, and support efforts to preserve our country’s treasures." PNA

And to be specific, 2500 hectares within Kaputian area is declared (through a Proclamation) a tourist zone and one of the few areas where tourism development is allowed in an agrarian reform area. 250 hectares of which is occupied by the Samal Casino Resort.
Bagani September 14th, 2006, 06:23 AM to be specific Casino Filipino VIP club ang naa name jud dinha sa apo view...arcade lang na sya, meaning mga slotmachines lang naa didto. Isa lang jud ang CASINO FILIPINO - DAVAO main ang naa sa grand regal..kung madayon to ang sa samal, maybe it will also be an arcade. :) coming from my sources. :)
There was an arcade in the Samal Resort. 3 years ago, during an inspection trip, I saw several slot machines wrapped in plastic inside the casino. It was operating when Ekran Berhad was still in Samal. Baka by this time, ginamit na yon sa ibang location. And hopefully, they will operate a full casino when the resort reopens in the near future - and hopefully without opposition from NGO's and cause-oriented groups.

Morality or immorality issues, bai, because it's gambling. Casinos daw corrupt the moral fiber of the society. Daghan na cases where these groups (usually church groups) block entry of PAGCOR for the setting up of casinos - in CDO, Lipa City, at marami pang iba. These groups don't care about economic benefits specifically employment and livelihood that it could possibly generate. A casino would surely have a hotel, restaurants and bars, etc. Imagine na lang kung unsa kadaghan ang makabintaha sa ingon ani nga development - all sectors of society including the charitable institutions of the church.

Ok so its only Kaputian that is a "tourist zone"... i thought its the whole Samal Island itself so the remaning area will be in mix use ? Just have a query sir Bagani for all its intention and purpose in making Samal a city and w/ a catchy name Island Garden City of Samal is this just to make another first , a "Philippine record"? Samal Island decision makers are a bunch of confused people. On one side they are promoting island and coastal tourism, and on the other economic zone. I hope it's not heavy industry. I heard that some sectors want ship building (maybe small and light seacrafts) in their area. Yan ang mahirap sa ating mga politico - they sometimes? don't use their brains. Their financial models don't reconcile with the physical capability of the site. Tourism is their passport to progress. Let Davao City be their gateway. When they move forward, Davao moves forward.
Change the name? Up to them. It only needs a very complicated process in Congress. The name now may not be appropriate. But they could seriously work towards its realization - not with heavy industries, but with tourism.

We in the west tend to apreciate free spontanious forms, promoting subtile balance , not an overt symetrical structure in the artwork.
The figurative content of this picture could have easily taken place in my country, the difference being the man would be on the ground looking up giving diections and the woman would be on top of a latter adjusting the parabola antenna. Back to the original picture. The only thing erect in this picture is the linear composition running up the stam of the tree seperating the picture into symetrical halves. While eastern art may often favour symetrical design, we often prefer a more circular, mysterious and subtile composititon. The diagonals are the real mysterious power in a rigid systeme of balnced symetrics.
The diagonales in the legs of the climber are repeted in the roof top beams and creates a sligth tention against the monotony and dominas of the upright erection of the tree which devides the picture into equal parts. The true free forms are the curvilinear contures of the rolling hills and breastlike forms of the fruits that the man is reaching for. Perhaps there are underlined man/woman power struggles here? The thorn back pocket of the man resembles a heart form while in contrast the womans top could be a bombwest or even better a flack west.
In retrospect I feel this picture is more a study on the Garden of Eden but where oh where is that snake ? Maybe the absent serpentine curves are the real snake in the picture? :)
Bagani September 14th, 2006, 12:19 PM guess the island's income and population has something to do with it.
IMHO, the name has nothing to do with either the income or the population. The name is simply not just appropriate for the present time. The name is a dream. It's the state that the people of Samal would want their place to become in the future - a green city, an environment-friendly city, an environmentally protected and preserved city where people, tourism, industry and environment co-exist in an ISLAND GARDEN setting.
However, with a bridge, ambot lang kung ma-achieve pa na nila. So, NO to Davao City-Samal Bridge.

Personally, I would prefer other forms of business opportunities. However, if no other alternatives are available, then it's better than nothing. A number of lives have been destroyed to addiction to gambling, with fathers or mothers putting entire fortunes in debt. In moderation, I'm sure it is just like any other form of entertainment. Sayang lang there's no way of putting government warning in gambling, unlike cigarette or alcohol.
Macau, by the way, is China's Las Vegas. That Macau-Davao flight can bring foreign gamblers to the city. So there might be more income opportunities too...
With the opening of the Sands Macau - the largest casino in the world[12] in 2004 and Wynn Macau[13] in 2006, gambling revenues from Macau's casinos were for the first time greater than those of Las Vegas (each about $5 billion)[14], making Macau one of the highest-volume gambling centres in the world. Rajah_Soliman September 14th, 2006, 06:12 PM you're right silicongulf...the morality issue could not be ignored.... but how can we justify PAGCOR? We know that it contributes a lot to government projects. A compromise would be to allow foreigners (only) to play in the casinos, whereas, if Filipino gamblers will be allowed, there should be a strict regulation for them. Bahala ng double standard. What do you think? :)

Davao eyed as retirement haven
To be launched as the Paradise in the East.
THE housing sector of Southern Mindanao is looking at reverse migration as an opportunity of selling the region as retirement haven to foreign nationals and overseas Filipino workers.
Salvador Valbuena, president of the Subdivision and Housing Development Association of Davao, said in an interview after guesting at the Club 888 Forum of The Marco Polo Hotel that with the trend now of the elderly going to third world countries to retire, this could be the chance to get a share of the market.
He said the Philippines is targeting at least one percent of the $44 billion total earnings of retired foreign nationals.
"If Davao can get a portion of that one percent it is good enough for a start. This kind of arrangement is already happening in Cavite and Davao must be a part of it," he said.
The concept of selling Davao as the "Paradise in the East" will be presented in a national convention of the housing sector on October 15-16, 2006 at the Waterfront Insular Hotel where the invited keynote speaker is President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. She will be joined by Vice President Noli del Castro, who is also chair of the Housing Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC).
SHDA and HUDCC are spearheading the national convention next month.
Valbuena explained that once the scheme take place, a retiree will have to register with the Philippine Retirement Authority (PRA) where he or she has to pay $20,000 as entry fee and a monthly fee of $1,500.
The private sector has organized the Philippine Retirement Authority Inc. that will undertake the projects to respond to the needs of the retirees. The PRA, a government entity, has to come up with accreditation and guidelines for the different sectors to comply.
He cited for instance that Villa de Mercedez, a high-end subdivision covering 80 hectares in Davao City, signified its interest of getting accreditation with the PRA.
He said there will be other high end subdivisions that are interested to venture on this kind of program even as he said that members of SHDA in the Davao region were one in pushing the program.
He said marketing with the foreign countries will be done through the PRA and negotiation will be done between the governments of the parties involved.
Valbuena said that during the two-day convention there will also be speakers coming from the countries of Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong to share their expertise about the housing

Good morning Alskling :hi:
:applause: nice Lena , its right men mostly only used one side of his brain :D
anyway thanx for giving me a"sense" in appreciating art, i used to study art too ,but forgot how to dissect or analyze like you do. Your truly a great art lover !! ohhh BTW maybe the snake is under the bushes :)

Other casinos and hotels slated to be opened through 2009 are: The Venetian Macao (2007), Four Seasons (2007), MGM Grand Macau (2007), Ponte 16 (2007), Macau Dorsett Hotel Complex (2007), Grand Hyatt (2007), Galaxy Cotai Megaresort (2008), City of Dreams (2008), Oceanus (2008), Mandarin Oriental (2009). First Phase of Macao's Cotai Strip scheduled to open in 2007 includes 7 resort hotels comprising of 10,000 guest rooms. The $1.8 billion Venetian Macao will serve as the anchor[15]. As a result, Macau's economy is growing extremely rapid due to gambling related tourism and construction from the new casino entrants.
I really agree having the Casino in Samal at least malayo sa Davao City.
MtApoStandard September 15th, 2006, 05:30 AM IMHO, the name has nothing to do with either the income or the population.
:okay: thanks

scandinavian girl September 15th, 2006, 06:58 AM About the bridge.....
I think a bridge could be good if the Samal Island would be protected against commercialism and pollution and stay natural...if I have understood it right this island is not yet destroyed by it...correct me if I am wrong! What about Talikud wouldn´t it be destroyed with alot of commercial tourism? Just a question as I say, I do not know alot about this since I am not a Davao-person. I see it like one of our islands here situated simular to mainland, we built a bridge over 30 years ago....it has not brougth alot of commersialism but of course there is more pollution due to cars going over it by the minute every day. Maybe it is good to do something about cars polluting then it would be not such a danger of destroying.....dinabaw I understand your point of view to as well as the oposite view.. life is in constant progress and in this progress we do better to watch over that the effects of it will not iincrease what is negative in our blindness of commercial benefits if possible...so this is not a simple yes I want and no I don´t question as I see it..
About art.
dinabaw about art ...maybe there is a snake in the bushes...you are right..:) I am warned against dangerous biting snakes in Davao so I better watch out ...:wink2:... :jk:

SiliconGulf September 15th, 2006, 08:53 AM Hello all.
I just talked to DTI Region XI director Pasawa during the DATE 2006 exhibit at BSP this morning. I told him that I'm giving the Silicon Gulf name to DTI Region XI and it is going to be reserved by DTI Region XI as a brand name for the Davao region. This means that it is for public use by any entity, organization or individual referring to the ICT capabilities or industry of Davao City. DTI Region XI will encourage government officials to also use the nickname when referring to the ICT industry of the region.
No other place in the world is laying claim to the Silicon Gulf name, unlike "Silicon Island" and others. (A simple search using Google will verify this.)

I hope that this move will put more visibility to the ICT activities of Region XI.
dinabaw September 15th, 2006, 08:58 AM Good Morgon alskling :hi:
But putting a bridge is synonimous to commercialism and industrialism ,no can do about it.
Bridge construction displace corals , mangroves and eventually their inhabitants (fishes).
But for me i am not totally against building a bridge if boats and ships are really clogging the sea lanes it is more polluting the sea then bridge have to be put up.30 years ago the trend is industrialization but now it is green city.
And it is really confusing as what d'eagowl stated Garden City of Samal , what do you tihnk ?
see you 3pm min askling!

Rajah_Soliman September 15th, 2006, 10:00 AM not putting a bridge is the best way to marginalize the people of Samal. are we for this? the same argument perhaps, or call it analogy, when through the years mindanao has been marketed abroad as Philippines' agricultural frontier aka "the laggard and backward part of the Philippines". it is just lately that we realize how important it is to package davao and the other major cities in mindanao as centers of modern development... remember they built the new airport to "bridge" davao to the world... and I challenge anyone who would say that that was a wrong decision.... :)
of course we all care about the environment.... but the bridge is not the pollutant...
btw, do you know how these small bancas and barges plying the samal-davao route are causing environmental damage? i want to hear something about this from our environmentalists... :)
WawaY[625] September 15th, 2006, 10:11 AM they wont be marginalized since DC is just a stone's throw away..its not like the Mindanao-MM scnario naman..we have enough areas for industries and commercialization..let samal be samal..virgin and untuched
