Virgin coco oil made in Davao now marketed

MORE and more people in the country are turning to virgin coconut oil (VCNO) as all natural food supplements. Virgin coconut oil has been found best in strengthening a person's immune system. It has the highest yield of lauric acid at 55.6 percent.

According to findings of several medical research scientists, chiefly Dr. Conrado Dayrit, the famous father of former Health Secretary Manuel Dayrit, virgin coconut oil is best to prevent risk of heart disease, skin disease, bacterial, viral and fungal infections, cancer and osteoporosis.

VCNO is likewise found best to control one's level of cholesterol, uric acid and sugar in the body, and prevents premature ageing and rapid weight gain or loss.

In widely publicized articles (in the Philippine Daily Inquirer and specialized science and agriculture magazines), Dr. Dayrit said virgin coconut oil is "heart-healthy, cholesterol-free, low carbo, linoleic acid...we have found it effective it control SARS and HIV virus."

After applying virgin coconut oil for two years, an HIV virus-infected person referred by then Health secretary Dayrit to his father, Conrado, showed signs of being cured. The patient's skin lesions disappeared and his other vital signs improved dramatically. Dr. Dayrit now thinks that VCNO might hold the secrets of curing Aids and HIV.

Also claimed to be best in increasing one's energy level and enhance memory and sexual potency, worldwide market demand for VCNO might soon become at last the key to solving our country's economic woes.

Latest VCNO product to hit the market is Virgin Tropics, virgin coco oil manufactured right in Davao. Manufactured by Feyvonne Milling Services, Virgin Tropics is distributed by Hughs and Steph Enterprises, which can be contacted at 7th avenue, Fortune Homes, Barangay Hizon (Bo. Pampanga), Davao City with e-mail address: dabba_miles@yahoo.com. The product is available over the counter at outlets of more than two dozens pharmacies.

7 nations join Asean tourism exhibition in Davao
MindaNews / 10 November 2005

DAVAO CITY -- Seven nations are joining the Philippines in the Asian Nations Tourism Forum (ATF) with all 458 booths for the Travel Exchange already sold out two months before the actual event.

Thailand tops with the most number of exhibitors and Europe has the biggest delegation of buyers for the January 18 to 20 event, said Susan del Mundo, ATF secretariat.

Thailand is sending 133 exhibitors followed by Malaysia with 100, Indonesia with 67, Singapore with 64, Philippines with 38, Vietnam with 25, Cambodia with nine and Brunei with seven.

“For the buyers, Europe has the biggest delegation, with 104 fully hosted and 23 semi-hosted,” she said.

Fully-hosted, she explained, means the country will shoulder all expenses from fare, accommodations, and tours while the semi-hosted package merely obliges the

host country to tour them in tourist spots around the Philippines.

That also holds true for the foreign media delegation coming over. The ATF, which will be held in Davao City for the first time from January 13 to 21, is one of the biggest events of the 10-member Association of South East Asian Nations.

She said Davao City would earn millions from the delegates alone.

“Assuming that each delegate would spend a minimum of $90 a day, with 1,000 delegates that’s about $900,000 in 10 days” or about P48.6 million at P54 to $1.

“But the main thing is to push Davao in the international market,” she said.

Organizers expect 1,800 international delegates and visitors and another 1,200 domestic tourists and officials.

Del Mundo said the feedback has been overwhelming even with the travel advisory against going to the Philippines issued by some governments in Europe.

“They can’t get travel insurance because of the travel advisory but groups from Germany, Russia and Poland are coming over here. That means they have interests in the ASEAN,” she said.

The Department of Tourism (DoT) has earmarked P100 million for the ATF while the local government also raised some P27 million as counterpart fund.

Arturo Boncato, Davao Tourism Association (DaTA) president, said the ATF would be the venue to push Davao City into the tourism map, citing the experience of Cebu City which hosted the ATF in 1998.

Boncato said they have prepared 350 rooms for the buyers but they might have to look for some more rooms because the response has been overwhelming.
Boncato said there are 800 more rooms for the international and local sellers and 120 rooms for the media.

ATF 2006 puts Davao in world tourism map

DAVAO CITY, Nov. 13 (PNA) - While the staging of the 25th ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) here is yet to be held on January 13-21, 2006, news on such a prestigious international event is already putting this emerging megacity in the world tourism map. This was revealed during a briefing conducted at Marco Polo Davao on Friday by the Department of Tourism (DoT), now at the hub of brisk international coordination among stakeholders of ATF 2006 from the 10 member-countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Citing online reservations and inquiries made through the ATF 2006 website (www.atfdavao.com), DoT Secretary Ace H. Durano said the event could easily draw over 800 corporate sellers from the ASEAN region and 430 specialists from key world markets as buyers. “All these would translate to thousands of foreign and local visitors flocking to Davao for the ATF 2006,” Durano said, stressing the city's tourism profile as a major event of its communication portfolio being circulated to its international target market.

The information blitz is also stirring international attention in the socioeconomic condition of Davao and the rest of Mindanao. The forum could also attract investments, not only in tourism sectors, but also in other key industries, said DoT Undersecretary Oscar Palabyab. On the other hand, DoT Undersecretary Susana del Mundo of the Philippine Convention and Visitors Corporation (PCVC), stressed the city's strong commitment to ensure the success of the Philippines' hosting of ATF 2006. Investments in the city in terms of total capitalization of businesses surged from only P62 billion in 2000 to a whopping P118.5 billion in 2004. The sharp growth is very evident in tourism, construction, agriculture, and export sectors. Tourist arrivals have been consistently increasing since 2000, with the DoT-Southern Mindanao (Region XI) placing Davao City's total tourism receipt at P5.22 billion in January-June 2005 alone, a 13-percent increase from P4.62 billion generated in the same period last year. Exports jump up to P13 million in 2004 from P8 million in 2003 with the balance of trade further widening in Davao City's favor. Citing the city as the next pillar of Philippine tourism, Durano said it was President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's personal choice that ATF 2006 be held here.

Also the gateway and capital of the East Asian Growth Area (EAGA), which comprises Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines, Davao City is an ideal tourist destination with its diverse cultures, beautiful beaches, awesome mountain resorts, fantastic dive spots, and natural resources. “There is a charm in Davao that is not seen elsewhere and this is captured by the city's locals,” Durano explained. The ATF is a cooperative regional effort to promote the Southeast Asian region as one tourist destination and support the individual tourism pursuits of the ASEAN's 10-member nations -- Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. The nine-day event comprises a travel trade fair that will be slated at the NCCC Exhibition Center and a series of conferences, business meetings and other functions in the city's various first-class international hotels and resorts.

I wanted to buy some land there before kaya lang lang title , baka ngayon meron na! haha.

But Davao needs some more standard hotels if they want tourism to take off , I think compared to cebu , we have less than half the rooms! And many of them are non standard. How is the Insular now? I haven't dropped by in few years but it was kinda pathetic to what it once was. Did Waterfront refurbish it nicely?

Celebrating Asean's Many Faces: ATF In Davao City
By Rosli Abidin Yahya

Bandar Seri Begawan - Seven nations, including Brunei Darussalam, will join the one-week Association of Southeast Nations (Asean) Tourism Forum (ATF) in Davao City from January 13, with all 458 booths for its Travel Expo (Travex) already bought.

Thailand will have 133 participants, the most number of exhibitors, while Europe is expected to bring the biggest delegation of buyers to Travex, comprising 104 that are fully hosted and 23 semi-hosted.

"Fully hosted" means that the host country will bear all expenses from fare to accommodations and tours while "semi-hosted" packages merely cover tours around the Philippines' main attractions.

Malaysia has the second largest number of exhibitors with 100 participants, followed by Indonesia (67), Singapore (64), Philippines (38), Vietnam (25), Cambodia (9) and Brunei Darussalam (7).

The ATF is also going to host a large number of foreign media members coming over especially for one of Asean's biggest events.

It is a cooperative regional effort to promote the Southeast Asian region as a tourist destination.

Organisers are expecting 1,800 international delegates and visitors in total as well as another 1,200 domestic tourists and officials.

The Philippines Department of Tourism (DoT) meanwhile has earmarked P100 million for ATF while the local government also raised some P27 million as a counterpart fund.

The ATF, themed "Celebrating' the Many Faces of Asean", hopes to promote Davao City on the tourism map after Cebu City's experience as a host in 1998. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin

Davao earns Green Banner Award
By Rose Palacio

Davao City (15 November) -- Davao City was chosen as Green Banner Awardee, a yearly award given by the National Nutrition Council (NNC) under its program "Monitoring, Evaluation on Local Nutrition Plan".

In an interview, City Health Officer and Nutrition Action officer Dr. Josephine Villafuerte said the Green Banner Award is given by NNC after thorough evaluation and monitoring of the city's nutrition programs based on the nutrition program efficiency, its effect on the community and nutrition innovations implemented by LGUs.

During a City Nutrition Council meeting Monday led by assistant city health officer Dr. Sam Cruz and Nutrition division head Venus Millana held at Barangay 26, District C, under barangay captain Eddie Inzo who tendered the lunch for all council members, it was learned that every barangay should have its own barangay nutrition committee to make them aware of the city's nutrition program and bring down to the barangay levels the important of nutrition in every family.

In the same meeting, Millana also pointed out the nutrition program of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and how his interventions on its implementation has greatly contributed for winning the said award.

Relevant points include: the Special Lugaw (which is not an ordinary food but full of vitamins) program of the Mayor for the schoolchildren; the city's efforts on food security in various levels: household, community, schools, and barangays; the Gulayan sa Barangay; and other interventions of Mayor Duterte in giving priorities to nutrition program for the poor families and malnourished children (in schools and on streets).

Nutrition Executive Officer Elsa M. Bayani is expected to be here today to grace the awarding to be held at Grand Men Seng starting 1:00pm.

Presentation of awards will be led by ED Bayani to be assisted by NNC regional head Ms. Teresa Ungson; DILG XI; and other government agencies concerned. (PIA)

Rediscovering Davao and the durian
By Merci Melchor
Inquirer News Service

TRAVELING in big groups has its drawbacks. There is always the risk of lost tickets, missing luggage or co-travelers whose faculties lack a sense of direction. However, there are many advantages to these out-of-town trips especially if a certain "Mr. M" heads the delegation. We receive more media coverage, more dinner invitations to private homes and even freebies from Cebu Pacific and Davao's Royal Mandaya Hotel. Mr. M is, of course, the Saturday Group's adviser and top artist, Mauro "Malang" Santos!

At a news conference, a young reporter asked how it felt to be back in Davao again. Abstract painter/writer Migs Villanueva aptly put it -- "We feel that Davao is almost home to us. We love the beach, the durian fruit. We love everything about Davao, especially the people we meet here. It is also another venue for us to show our talents" and "to shop at Aldevinco!" continued Lydia Veto lightheartedly. Hearing this, Malang remarked, "Hoy -- we're to do three things: conduct a workshop, hold our third Davao exhibit, and meet our Davao counterparts. Saka na ang shopping!" (Shopping comes later.)

Held at the Seagull Beach Resort, the workshop was a great success. Providing education for poor children in her neighborhood, Beth Dureza gathered 20-30 artistically-inclined pupils from the Diego Silang Elementary School, a public school in Matina Aplaya. These were later joined by 20 Bantay Bata wards from the Davao Chapter, under the
care of Pia Carabuena.

It was heartwarming to see the smiling faces of the children. They eagerly greeted us -- especially Fernando Sena who conducted the whole-day workshop assisted by good friend, Ben Infante.

Starting with the basics -- line, shape, color and proportion -- Nanding had the children drawing still-life and landscapes before the day was over. So skillful and effective a tutor was he that the young crowd clamored for another session the following day.

Later that evening, we held our exhibit, "Impressions of Davao II," along the long impressive hallway of the Royal Mandaya Hotel. A total of 49 art pieces were shown-works done by Malang, Reilly Boquireen, Cris Cruz, Buds Convocar, Jake Blanco, Caña, Ben Infante, Alpha Larracas, Anna de Leon, Wilson Ma, Nik Masangcay, Merci Melchor, Roel Obemio, Ernie Patricia, Roland Santos, Fernando Sena, Bing Siochi, Sheila Tiangco, Lydia Velasco and Migs Villanueva.

Completing the group was Ophie Dee of Gallery 828 as curator and very supportive friend of the Saturday Group. Part of the proceeds of the exhibit will be for the benefit of the needy students of Diego Silang, a pet project of Beth Dureza.

The following day was "Araw ng Dabaw." The whole of Davao -- all of 244,000 hectares -- was celebrating its 68th anniversary, having been formally inaugurated as a charter city in March 16, 1937 by the late President Elpidio Quirino.

To commemorate the event, we went back to the Seagull Beach Resort for swimming, chatting and painting with a few Davao artists -- George So, Boboy Buenaventura, Abe Garcia and Bryan Cabrera, to name a few.

Later that evening, all inhibitions disappeared. And to further add to the merriment, some of us went "indak-indak sa daan" (street dancing). Others sat around Mandaya's lobby and sang popular love songs to the delight of the hotel staff and guests. It was a good evening and it had been a good day. Many talents were discovered, many friendships made.

We soon discovered that most Davaoeños -- especially our many hosts -- are durian lovers. To them, eating durian is an art. So we were introduced to this fruit in all forms, shapes and color-durian caramel candy, durian pastilles, durian suman, durian ice cream, durian ice drop, durian shake and durian delight (a concoction of the pulpy fruit and gin).

We were well aware that smuggling the repugnant smelling fruit through customs could pose a problem. A nun I met during our exhibit whispered to me, "Inday, just wrap it in many layers of damp newspaper and put it in your suitcase."
On our last day, and with last minute shopping done, we rushed to the airport and our flight back home. Waving goodbye to our Davao hosts, we saw that dear, little nun and her innocent-looking "bayong" calmly pass through customs with the aura of a guiltless angel!

Who is Datu Bago?
MindaNews / 17 November 2005

DAVAO CITY -- His name may have already been adopted by
a foundation giving out awards to Davaoeños who have helped in the development of the city, but only few residents here know the story behind one of Davao’s most important heroes.

In fact, even the people behind the Datu Bago Foundation admitted they do not know much about their hero aside from the little accounts in history books, and are thus on a mission to trace the roots of the Tausug warrior who defended Davao against the Spaniards in the late 1800s.

“We have to find who Datu Bago is in the life and history of Davao City,” said Councilor Pilar Braga, who was among the recipients of the Datu Bago Award in 2003.

She their first move would be to find the hero’s descendants so they could get first-hand accounts on the person behind the name.

Then they intend to find Datu Bago’s remains so he could be given a proper burial befitting a hero.

Reportedly because of Datu Bago, ruler of the Samals, Davao City became one of the last territories conquered by the Spaniards.

History books say that Don Uyanguren landed at the mouth of the Davao River on July 20, 1847 to subdue the Tausug leader. Datu Bago’s Muslim followers met the invaders.

Datu Bago was reportedly slain in the battle, and his followers fled toward the mountains.

Braga said a new book on Davao’s history by Prof. Rudy Rodil includes the life of Datu Bago. She said they are just waiting for the teaching module from the Department of Education so they could integrate Davao’s history into the elementary and high school curriculum. Hopefully, this will happen in the second quarter of next year.

The foundation also announced that it is already accepting nominees for the 2006 Datu Bago Award, to be conferred during the Araw ng Davao festivities in March.

The search is open to all persons of any nationality, living or not, who have been residents of Davao City for at least 10 years. Deadline is Jan. 31, 2006.

Last year’s lone winner was Dr. Julian P. Rodriguez “for exemplary and selfless contribution to the growth and development of Davao City” and his contribution to the preservation of the Dabawenyo Cultural Heritage.

The first winners, awarded in 1969, were businessman Antonio O. Floreindo; the late Guillermo Torres Sr., publisher and University of Mindanao president; Antonio Uy; Fr. Maurice Michaud; Tomas Monteverde and Francisco Villa-Abrille.

The Rise and Rise of Rodrigo Duterte
By Daisy C. Gonzales
Davaotoday.com
Posted by Bulatlat

DAVAO CITY – He is unorthodox as he is popular. He gained fame (or notoriety) as a no-nonsense mayor in his fight against criminality. A good source of sound bite, he is his own effective propaganda machine. He is both loved and loathed.

To those who fear him, Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is “the punisher,” as Time magazine described him three years ago. To those who respect him, he is the man who keeps the peace. To his political adversaries, he plays dirty. To others whose lives he touched through his generosity, he has a heart of gold. To keen political observers, he's nothing but a shrewd politician who knows how to play the game.

"He knows the psychology of the masses and knows how to deal" with different groups like the military, business and the underground left, said Sister Josephine Bacaltos of the Religious of the Good Shepherd who is the mayor's consultant for social services.

Each election year, Duterte's popularity always translated into votes. His political machinery, consolidated through time, is more than enough to make him win any elective seat he would aspire for. A presidential aspirant would need his endorsement. Duterte, now 60 years old, never lost an election bid since he set foot on City Hall almost two decades ago.

"He understands the system. No wonder he's in politics because he understands politics," said city councilor Emmanuel Galicia, who once was Duterte's boss when the future mayor worked as a prosecutor during martial law.

“I grew up in politics because my father was governor. So I have a good training on how to deal with the problems of people,” Duterte said.

In the 1950s, his father Vicente was governor of Davao which at that time encompassed Cateel in Davao Oriental down to Abad Santos in Davao del Sur. His mother Soledad was a teacher for 26 years and a civic leader who once headed former President Corazon Cojuangco-Aquino's “Yellow Friday Movement” here and the regionalized peace process with the communists in the 1980s.

"I never really dreamed that he will follow the footsteps of the father," Mrs. Duterte, known as Nanay Soleng, said.

She described her son as an “ordinary kid” but that he “ventured where others do not." At age 14, on his own, Duterte piloted a small plane, buzzing outside their house, to the consternation of his parents.

Nanay Soleng said her son was always out of the house, always looking for some action elsewhere. He was such a problem child that his father exiled him to Digos, Davao del Sur, where he finished high school.

Duterte went on to finish law at San Beda College in the early 1970s. He then had a stint as an instructor in the national police academy before joining government as a prosecutor.

In 1988, when Duterte was being wooed to run for mayor against Zafiro Respicio, Nanay Soleng told her son, "One politician in the family is enough.”

Duterte was the officer-in-charge (OIC) vice mayor then and had served in the government as special counsel until he became assistant fiscal before he was appointed OIC after the 1986 Edsa uprising. As special counsel, he investigated and prosecuted cases such as those involving police and military personnel, and subversion and rebellion cases filed against alleged members of the New People's Army (NPA).

His mother, as well as Galicia , would say the mayor was fearless, and that time, even though martial law was still in effect, even recommended the prosecution of an abusive military personnel. "When other prosecutors did not dare, Duterte was never afraid to do it," Galicia said. He described the young prosecutor as serious in his work, yet he joked around. Whenever he skipped office, Duterte could be found at the shooting range. "He loved guns," Galicia said.

President Aquino's assumption to power did not stop the bloody encounters between the NPA and the military in the Davao hinterlands. Evacuations happened and the vigilante group Alsa Masa was formed in the city to counter the underground movement's popular influence, especially in Agdao, and the NPA sparrow units that targeted military and police personnel.

Duterte, as the OIC vice mayor, was in the thick of things. His help was sought by cause-oriented groups, said Sister Josephine, who was with Duterte in an organization in the 1980s called the Nationalist Alliance for Justice, Freedom and Democracy (NAJFD), together with other human-rights advocates and lawyers like Larry Ilagan. He would attend march rallies, help evacuees from the Davao City hinterlands, and according to lawyer Carlos Isagani Zarate, worked for the release of military personnel held captive by the NPA.

In those visits in the NPA-influenced mountains of Davao, in Paquibato and Mandug, the "people would egg him to run for mayor," said Zarate, who used to cover Duterte at that time for the now defunct Media Mindanao News Service. According to Zarate, Duterte would reply, "I don't have any plans for that, but I''ll do whatever the people want me to do."

The third time he brought up with his mother the matter of running for mayor, Duterte had already decided. He told her: "My, they said I should not tell you, and we won't spend a single centavo."

His uncle, Alejandro "Landring" Almendras, who was himself a seasoned politician and a logging magnate, supported Duterte's first foray into politics, as well as other politicians identified with the dictator Marcos such as Manuel Garcia, Elias Lopez and Chinese industrialist Ricardo Limso. Duterte was up against Respicio, who had the full backing and endorsement of the Aquino administration and industrialist Jesus V. Ayala.

The mayoralty race in 1988 was a toss-up between Duterte and Respicio but three others were likewise running, including Alsa Masa cult leader Juan “Jun” Pala. Respicio and Pala counted on the Alsa Masa votes while Duterte had been assured of solid votes from the NPA-influenced hinterlands of the city.

Duterte won. Afterward, he made it a point to shake off the communist tag that Respicio had used against him during the campaign.

Under his watch as mayor for three terms, and with a fresh mandate after his three years in Congress, Duterte not only went after criminals. He tried uniting the different tribes and cultures in the city, as well as the other political groups.

Duterte designated deputy mayors that represented the Lumads and Moro in the city government, a first in the country which was later copied in other areas. While he is open to meeting with revolutionary groups such as the NPA and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), he has also welcomed and supported the so-called anti terrorism Task Force Davao into his arms despite protests from progressive groups.

In the elections since 2001, he endorsed left-leaning groups like Bayan Muna (People First) and accommodated progressive groups into his ticket.

But Duterte's main political opponent, lawyer Benjamin de Guzman, saw things differently about his former mentor. "Wasteful, neglectful and incompetent" was how he assessed Duterte's three-year watch at City Hall after Duterte made a comeback in the 2001 elections. De Guzman alleged, in a letter he sent to Mindanao Daily Mirror columnist Bert Tesorero last year, that Duterte had been absent most of the time and left the reins of the city to his deputies.

De Guzman once ruled the city for three years after the 1998 elections, when Duterte ran and won as member of the House of Representatives. Both de Guzman and Duterte campaigned for each other in the elections. When the next election came in 2001, Duterte made a comeback as mayor, thinking that de Guzman would step aside for him. But de Guzman sought reelection, pitted himself against Duterte, and formed an alliance with Rep. Prospero Nograles.

If the results of that elections were an indication – Duterte won but only four city councilors under him were victorious -- Duterte had crawled back to the once mighty kingdom that he had built for nine years.

Last year's elections provided a glimpse of Duterte's political shrewdness. He was hell-bent on smashing de Guzman in the polls. The result: Duterte's votes were more than double that of de Guzman's, and majority of the council candidates under Duterte's ticket now sit in the City Council.

But there were accusations of irregularities. De Guzman accused Duterte's camp of cheating, calling the election a "farce." He pulled out his poll watchers even before the counting started, alleging that many voters had been disenfranchised and the camp of Duterte were into vote-buying and coerced the people to vote for Duterte.

Duterte knows the "art of systematic cheating," according to a source close to de Guzman who asked not to be named. Duterte's camp, the source said, had put up a “parallel Comelec” (Commission on Elections) in one of the houses of Duterte's biggest allies. Here, the votes were allegedly “closely monitored.” The allegations, however, remain unproven; no protest had been filed in the Comelec against Duterte.

Duterte had also formed an alliance with President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who herself had been dogged by election fraud charges, and, in effect, with Nograles, who had been the mayor's foremost nemesis. Nograles is a stalwart of the president's political coalition.

De Guzman, despite his alliance with Nograles, had then become the opposition's candidate. He had been endorsed by the camp of Fernando Poe Jr., Arroyo's main challenger in the polls. But a few months before the May elections, the opposition in fact had endorsed Duterte. Then, in March, it endorsed de Guzman, then promptly recalled the endorsement two days later.

De Guzman finally became Poe's official candidate in Davao City. But reflecting perhaps the ambivalence of the opposition toward de Guzman, or perhaps because it didn't want to offend Duterte, Poe and fellow actor Eddie Garcia endorsed de Guzman by raising his hands in Iloilo City.

Poe, despite the fact that Davao is a traditional opposition bailiwick and despite his immense popularity, lost in the city.

De Guzman, meanwhile, tried his best against Duterte. He challenged Duterte to a debate on topics related to "effective, efficient and productive" governance. He also exploited the “personal” issues that had cropped up against Duterte, who acknowledged during the campaign last year his relationship with several women. In an interview, Duterte lambasted de Guzman's camp for the “black propaganda” against him, which he said had been one of the low points in the campaign.

De Guzman never got his wish for a debate. His staid personality – he lacked the all-important charisma with the crowd – was no match to Duterte's colorful, if offensive, rhetoric that the public loved.

But de Guzman managed to coax some answers from Duterte on the question of summary executions, which de Guzman had used in the campaign against Duterte (although the killings actually lessened during the campaign). In one sortie in Marilog, Duterte, according to media reports, replied to the charge that he was behind the killings: “It's true,” he said, “but who were these people that I killed? They were fools!”

The crowd loved such one-liners from Duterte, despite the fact that it could be self-incriminating. Duterte had entertained his public and such an admission of guilt got lost in the political din.

Back in the 1980s, when Duterte was still a neophyte in politics, he once told a journalist that he was "frustrated" to see suspected criminals, despite evidence against, being acquitted of their crimes. He said then that what he liked about the NPA is their "brand of rendering swift justice." He has declared to all that he would get rid of criminals through any means necessary. He takes pride in the fact that, as far as he is concerned, that is happening.

Almost two decades after first entering politics, Duterte's political savvy only improved and has grown practically unmatched within the city's political elite. Today, as he once told his good friend, the evangelist Apollo Quiboloy, he has “no more mountains to climb.” He is politically secured and has turned to building his legacy, which to him is a peaceful and crime-free city. Rody’s War

Mayor Rodrigo Duterte says his hatred for criminals changed his city.

DAVAO CITY (davaotoday.com) – Mayor Rodrigo Duterte likes to regale his guests with the story of how, one time, using a piece of firewood, he crushed the hands of a man accused of stealing hand-held radios. The problem with the story, as the mayor himself would tell his visitors, is that he had actually punished the wrong man.

Duterte laughed out loud when he narrated this story one evening last week, during dinner with friends and journalists. He used the story to drive home the point that he hates thieves and criminals with passion.

The irony was apparently lost on him. To his critics, however, this story illustrates perfectly what is so wrong with Duterte’s obsession with ridding the city of criminals using what has been described by the mayor’s critics as criminal methods. Because he sidesteps due process, they say, he is bound to make mistakes sooner or later.

Indeed, according to the Coalition Against Summary Executions (CASE), an alliance of human rights and child advocates in the city, 12 of the 469 murdered by death squads or hired killers here from 1998 until 2005 had been cases of mistaken identity.

This year has seen the worst so far in the killings that have made this city infamous, with 147 summary executions. CASE said the murders have become even more brazen. “They shoot pointblank in broad daylight, even in busy spots like the entrance of a downtown shopping mall,” said Ricmar Mapalo, the group’s spokesman.

But many of his supporters, mainly law enforcers, businessmen and members of the city’s political and economic elite, laud the man and his crime-fighting method. They say of all the mayors this city has had, nobody quite changed it the way Duterte did. Duterte is one leader “who can implement the law,” said Leo Avila, chair of the Committee on Ethics and Good Governance at the City Council.

“My hatred for criminals – that’s what changed Davao City,” Duterte told the editors of davaotoday.com last week. In that interview, Duterte made no bones about his views of criminals, and offered a fascinating – if at times disturbing – insight into the mind of one of the most controversial and popular political leaders in the Philippines.

Excerpts:
Some say there have been cases of mistaken identity in these killings?
If they have the facts, why don’t they file a case in court or come to me and show to me? Why can’t they do that?

I remember the case of (human-rights worker Rashid) Manahan. He had received death threats in Cotabato. When he was killed in my city, they say I ordered the killing. Putang ina! Why would I kill a poor guy who was just working for an NGO? If you want, I’ll line up all the human-rights commissioners and kill them all.

They say you don’t touch the big fish.
Puta... I don’t hit the big fish? Hesusmaryosep! I know I cannot get (industrialist Jesus) Ayala and (banana magnate Antonio) Floirendo because they don’t use drugs!

How safe is Davao City?
Very safe, I would say, except for the terrorists. But the common crimes like snatching… That’s petty. I cannot kill a human being just because he stole small items. That’s too expensive a payment. I deal with kidnappers, especially people who kill, or people who rape and kill.

They make your blood boil.
I’m like that. It’s my human nature. And you know human nature is part of your character. That’s my persona.

What has changed about you since you first ran for mayor,
since you were a prosecutor?
I hate to mention this because I’m not trying to make a big issue out of it. I grew up with politics because my father was governor. So practically I have a good training about how to deal with problems of people.

My hatred of criminals – that’s what changed Davao. If I have not improved the lot of the poor folk there at Boulevard, it’s simply because of the economy. But what actually, to me, made the difference is at least the criminals here are afraid of the law. Here, if you are a police officer and you steal from a civilian, putang ina, I’m going to kill you. God, I will! I’ll M16 you in public.

You know, governance or whatever in public office -- it's all about sense and sensibility. That is all that is needed. I am proud that I walk the extra mile to see to it that this city is peaceful.

We’d like to make this clear: Each time you say you’d kill somebody….
That is all talk! (Laughs.)

But isn’t that a form of taking the law into your own hands?
No, it's a form of a threat, instilling fear in the minds of criminals. So, if you are a journalist, if you are an ordinary citizen, why should you be afraid? Unless you believe your mayor is a candidate for a mental asylum. (Laughs.) Why would you be afraid each time I say, “You criminals are sons of bitches! I’m going to kill all of you!”? If you’re afraid, then you must be a criminal.

Doesn't that put you in danger of being implicated if
something happens to these people after you say those things?
You know, guilt is personal. Remember that it's a principle of criminal law. Guilt is personal. There is no guilt by association just because I'm the mayor talking here nonsense.

Each time I threaten them, there’s always a qualification: “You terrorists, putang ina, I’m going to kill you!” As you see, they end up dead. (Laughs.)

What happens if you’re no longer mayor? The fear by the criminals could be of you, not the law. What happens if you’re no longer there and the person who replaces you is not as strong as ---
Putang ina, even if I’m asleep, wake me up and I’ll deal with it. (Laughs.) I’m never afraid of criminals, even when I was not yet a mayor. When I was a prosecutor, I kicked a man in the chest inside the court room.

Were you cited in contempt?
Of course! (Laughs.) I was a prosecutor and I was in jail. (Laughs.)

Why can’t you just prosecute these criminals, bring them to justice?
Some of them are dead. The others, we’re still going to kill them.

Were you frustrated with the legal system?
I began as a prosecutor, right? So take it from me. When I was a prosecutor for 10 years, this thing called guilt – that’s always an 80-20 proposition and all you have to do is to create doubt. And because of stringent regulations about right to counsel, information, due process and everything – these are so limited. What can you get from a terrorist during 36 hours of detention? Let’s be frank. What can you get?

The judicial process is too complicated?
It’s not just that. It’s the law itself. Because government is supposed to be powerful it owns everything but there's a barrier and that barrier is the Bill of Rights. It protects the citizens from abusive excesses, inordinate exercise of power. The problem is, they abuse it, so the criminals are in and out of prison. That’s what I hate about it.

Let’s put it this way. I am not about ready to admit any particular killing here. (Laughs.) I can go to prison. What I’m trying to say is that I’m trying hard to make everybody realize, both the civilians and criminals, that if you commit a serious crime, you'll just have to pay for it. Maybe inside the prison or maybe lose your funds or lose your life.

How do you know that your threats against criminals are working?
Look around. Compare it to other places. How could you not see it? Go around the city…

Have you given up on due process?
No, I should not waive anything there in the Bill of Rights. I think that we should observe it strictly. But if you do not leave room for me to exercise my discretion of human rights or if you do not give me that space, if you box me in one corner, you do not leave me an elbow room to give you, to afford you that right, in the end, you will lose everything... maybe including your life.

But what about the children? Many of those killed were minors.
(Stammers.) That’s a collateral… social problem. It becomes a collater… collateral itself. Its not a question of crime anymore. That’s what makes things difficult. Well, that is another problem. I cannot answer that. (davaotoday.com)

@ Paul: kung ok lang sa imo, i'll post this article on 'artisthood'

A Gift of Art by Artisthood

ARTISTHOOD is a bonding of homegrown visual artists of diverse persuasions whose goal is to establish a strong comunity of creative individuals in Davao.

Although losely formed on March 1, 2002, Artisthood is fast emerging as Davao's latest major achiever in the field of the visual arts. Along with that, it is also gaining recognition here and abroad as upholder of Artists' Rights. To top it all, Artisthood breaks away from the trends set by crass commercialism and politicization of the arts and offers a fresh meaning and deeper relevance to the word "Artist"—meaning, imbued with integrity, respect, and responsibility.

Basically, Artisthood's unifying principles are capsulated in what it calls the 3 Rs:

self-Respect,
Respect for others, and
self-Responsiblity

Macondray Plastics to build new P350-M factory in Davao City

Mindanao-based Macondray Plastics, Inc. (MacPlas) is building a new factory in Davao to increase its production capacity by as much as 70 percent, company Chairman Martin Lorenzo said.

Lorenzo, in an interview with reporters, said the new facility will be fully operational by February, 2006. Total cost for the new factory is pegged at P350 million.

According to Lorenzo, the company already has the banana industry in Davao as its ready market for the agricultural plastic products it will produce in its new factory.

MacPlas is a manufacturing company that produces polyethylene plastic blown film products and polypropylene twine. The company’s main facility is located in Panacan, Davao City, while the second facility is located in Panabo, Davao del Norte.

The company is a major supplier of agricultural plastic products. It supplies its products and services mainly to the banana-growing and export industry in Mindanao. Its biggest clients include Chiquita-Unifrutti Philippines, Dole Philippines and Fresh Banana Agricultural Corp.

The company also generates revenues from the sale of its various agricultural products to affiliate companies engaged in agricultural production and export. These companies include Del Monte Phils, Inc., Lapanday Agricultural and Development Corp., Global Fruits Corp., Lead Export & Agro-Development Corp., Malalag Ventures Plantation Inc., Pioneer Ventures, Inc.

To reduce dependence on the banana industry, MacPlas has diversified its customer base by also penetrating the plastic packaging requirements of the commercial and industrial sectors as well as plasticulture for agricultural applications.

To date, the company has successfully produced food grade bags catering to the food service industry, poultry industry and export of banana chips, and dessicated coconut.

For the first nine months of the year, MacPlas reported a net income of P14.2 million, a slight drop from its reported earnings of P15 million during the same period last year.

Company revenues for the period January to September 2005 meantime stood at P244.24 million from P205.85 million during the same period last year. The growth was attributed to the increase in selling price implemented by the company for all its products during the third quarter of the year.

Average selling price for the third quarter of 2005 was pegged at P117.2 per kilogram, 19.9 percent higher than the third quarter 2004 average selling price of 97.8 per kilogram.

MacPlas was formerly known as Agro Plastics, Inc. The company tool its present name in 1995 following the takeover of Macondray & Co., Inc. of the Lorenzo family.

"The ASEAN Dream" to launch in Davao City

Davao City (23 November) -- "The ASEAN Dream" will be launched in Davao City as a pioneer Asean Tourism Forum project with social responsibility that aims to build the dreams of ASEAN children.

Philippine Convention and Visitors Corporation trade and travel head Susan del Mundo said The ASEAN Dream is a respond to the negative effects of tourism and has a firm stand in protecting and supporting the children.

She said in most cases children are the hardest hit and become the victims of tourism's hospitality industry.

"Moral decay and degradation due to child prostitution and sex slavery, pedophilia, and other vices have proliferated," she said.

She said as host country for ATF 2006 and in line with the drive of the Department of Tourism (DOT) on "tourism with a heart campaign" the project is timely to underscore and define the impact of ATF's role and stand in the ASEAN tourism industry.

She said it is also timely because it coincides with the 25th year and upholds the faces of men, women and especially, the children of ASEAN.

"As a major dollar earner and economic booster in developing countries such as the ASEAN, the ill effects of tourism must be acknowledged fully and for the environment to be consciously safeguarded and constantly protected for tourism to prosper," she said. (PIA/pdbanzon)

Davao hotels, resorts undergo massive facelift for ATF 2006

DAVAO City – Hotels and resorts in this city are briskly upgrading their facilities for the massive influx of participants in the forthcoming ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF), which will be held here from Jan. 13 to 21 next year.

This early, 1,451 rooms in various first-class hotels and resorts in this city and the nearby Garden City of Samal have already been blocked off for ATF 2006 even as online registration for participation in this global event continues.

All the 14 official ATF 2006 hotels are refurbishing their facilities. The upgrading of The Marco Polo Davao’s ballroom and function rooms has recently been completed, while a major renovation at the Waterfront Insular Hotel Davao is expected by yearend.

The Pearl Farm Beach Resort, which will be the venue of the meetings of the ASEAN tourism ministers and the national tourism organizations, has just completed work on a new pavilion on its Malipano Island and renovated its Samal houses to provide elegant accommodations to various government delegations. Similar face-lifting is expected in the other resorts and hotels, all are eyeing a substantial share of the windfall from the ATF.

The 11 other official ATF hotels are Apo View, Grand Regal, Royal Mandaya, Paradise Island Resort, Crown Regency Residences, Grand Meng Seng, Linmarr Apartelle, Regency Inn, Casa Leticia, Lispher Inn, and Malagos Garden Resort.

Extensive preparations for the ATF are also being undertaken all over the city, including improvements in airport facilitation and reception, transport services and facilities, special (city, countryside, and island) tours, airtight security, health and safety systems, communications and protocol requirements, foreign and national media arrangements, traffic management, and various beautification projects and special events.

City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, chairman of the Davao Host Committee (DHC), is inviting everyone to come and discover this "City in Bloom."

"Our city takes pride in being recognized as one of the cleanest and greenest in the country as well as having the second best potable water in the world," Duterte states in his message to the ATF exhibitors, travel trade buyers, and all other visitors who are poised to come from various parts of the globe.

Further beautification of this exotic and enchanting city also involves volunteers from every barangay and covers all the parks, airport, roads, and street islands, including installation of streetlights all over town, according to DHC vice chairman Art Boncato.

Such efforts were hailed by Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace H. Durano.

"It is in this remarkable display of cooperation and unity that we see a resurgence of a sense of community and mutual responsibility that ensure success in every undertaking."

Davao City has been named by Asiaweek Magazine as one of the most livable cities in Asia, and by the Asian Institute of Management as the Philippines’ most competitive to do business in. The city also has three of the country’s most treasured natural gems – Mount Apo, the highest peak; Philippine Eagle, the national bird and the world’s second largest eagle; and Waling-Waling orchid, the national flower.

All these and other attractions will be showcased among ASEAN’s bests during the ATF, which will have its opening ceremony at the Davao Central Bank Convention Center, closing ceremony at The Marco Polo Davao, Travel Exchange (Travex) fair at the NCCC Exhibition Centre, and a series of conferences, business meetings and other functions in the city’s first-class international hotels and resorts.

Other special events include "Friendly Games" at the Paradise Island, Mindanao Trade Expo at SM City, and Night Market at Roxas Avenue, among others.

"Indeed, we are happy to host the 2006 ASEAN Tourism Forum and we look forward to your arrival as Davao City beckons to be discovered," Duterte said.

The ATF is supported by the Philippine Airlines as head of the organizing body’s air transportation committee, TTG Asia Media Pte Ltd as travel exchange organizer, CNN as official international cable and satellite media partner, and Travel Weekly, TTR Weekly, and TTG Asia as official trade publications. - Manila Bulletin

not quite true. PAL has flown 747´s to davao´s new airport this year. but i do not know if they were restricted to weight/seat/passenger limits because of the "short" runway of 2500 m. what they would definately need is a parallel taxiway like in cebu, and possibly a new terminal. but that is a long way ahead. they hardly make a million passengers per annum right now. so no sweat !

Another eagle is born

DAVAO CITY (Minda-News) – Who wants to play ninong (godfather) or ninang (godmother) to this baby Philippine Eagle hatched six days ago?

The eagle, a product of natural pairing of captive Philippine Eagles Tsai and Princess Maasim, is the 19th bred in captivity at the Philippine Eagle Center in Malagos, Calinan but the first to be born in the new incubation and rearing facility named after the late city mayor, Elias B. Lopez.

The Elias Lopez Facility for Incubation and Rearing was inaugurated in June this year in preparation for the onset of the breeding season in July. The facility was built to support the growing number of Philippine

Eagles bred and hatched in captivity, the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF), said in a press statement.

Dennis Salvador, PEF executive director, said “breeding and rearing techniques have greatly improved since Pag-asa was born 13 years ago, and we anticipate more eagles as we progress with our research.”

The baby eagle is available for adoption and naming under the PEF’s Adopt-an-Eagle program. The program started when the first captive-bred eagle Pag-asa was born in mid-January 1992.

PEF needs assistance in the rearing of 17 of the 33 eagles in the Philippine Eagle Center.

Davao City’s P900M loan to make new jobs
Published : 2005-12-05

Davao Cty’s P900 million loan from the Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP) is expected to fuel priority programs of the city government and generate more jobs for Dabawenyos.

“The LBP board of directors approved a P990-million loan facility through LBP board resolution no. 04-341 that will finance the Davao Development Plan of the city government,” city administrator Wendel Avisado said.

Initially, 1,602 jobs are expected to be created from the proposed five projects identified under the city’s plan.

Planned projects under the P900-million Land Bank loan include: the construction of farm-to-market roads and alternate routes that is projected to cost P160 million and expected to generate about 1,022 jobs.

The project comprises the construction of the Bunawan-Cabantian road section and the Calinan-Toril section. The 19.01 kilometer Bunawan-Cabantian road will link seven barangays and will directly benefit 72,547 residents including farmers residing in the area.

The 25.30-kilometer Cali-nan-Toril road will traverse nine barangays and will benefit about 59,617 residents and will serve as a venue for development as road production for some 6,396.44 hectares of agricultural lands will be put in place.

The 6,396.44 hectares of agricultural lands are currently untapped. Once developed, this will ease traffic along Calinan-Ulas road junction.

Another proposed project under the approved loan facility is the P250-million Urban and Drainage and Flood Control that will create about 300 jobs.

The project under the Shelter and Urban Land Reform program would cost about P100-million and is expected to create some 200 jobs.

This involves the acquisition and development of 40 to 50 hectares of new relocation and settlement sites. The city government has identified 1,906 households qualified for relocation under the UDHA law.

The Road and Drainage Maintenance project costing about P130-million is expected to maintain and improve road conditions thus would provide easy access and delivery of goods and services. (PIA-RBPalacio)

Naked "David" statue stirs furor in southern Philippines

DAVAO, Philippines (AFP) - A replica of Michaelangelo's naked statue, "David," is stirring controversy in the southern Philippine city of Davao with local officials seeing it as a veiled advertisement for a local love-nest.

Davao city councillors are objecting to a replica of David that was put up in a beachfront park by the owners of Queensland Lodge, a local motel known as a hideaway for lovers, saying that the statue was clearly intended to raise thoughts of sex.

Councilor Mabel Acosta, chairwoman of the city's education and arts committee, said she wants the statue, located near the motel, removed on the grounds that it is not only repugnant to the morals and culture of the residents, but also was built on public land.

Acosta stressed that what is questionable is not the "work of the master" but why it was placed near a motel.

"You know this would create controversy because of the marketing strategy," she said.

She also remarked that the motel owners put up the concrete, gold-painted replica of David without getting permission from the Italian government. "I want it to be removed as soon as possible because it's insulting to the Italians and to us."

Teodoro Arana, owner of the Queensland has insisted that he erected the statue several weeks ago to make the people of the city proud to host such a work of art.

Some other city councillors in the city are proposing a compromise: that a pair of pants be put on the statue.

As she passed the statue on her way to a neighboring park, high-school student Sharmaine Joy Cadelina, criticized it, saying "this park is open to the public and there are minors who will see such statue which will be offensive to them."

However Linda Garcia, a food vendor, said she is grateful for the statue as more people have been frequenting the park, resulting in higher sales.

Road projects to open up new areas for Davao development

DAVAO CITY -- The city government’s near-term development plan would spur opening up new areas comprising of thousands of hectares of land for property developers and agribusiness investors.

The development plan, costing P900 million through a loan from the Land Bank of the Philippines, covers two major road projects on the northern and southern parts of the city that would make remote areas within an hour from the heart of the city and are accessible to public transport.

City hall officials identified the projects as the 19-kilometer Bunawan-Cabantian road and the 25-kilometer Calinan-Toril road.

Wendel Avisado, city administrator, said at least P160 million would be allocated for the road component under the near-term development plan, covering the next two or three years, aimed at easing vehicular traffic in the city’s northern and southern fringes and making available to investors new areas for development.

Property appraisers here described the areas to be opened as mostly suited for agricultural and residential projects noting the city’s plan would significantly jack up land prices within the vicinity of the planned projects.

"For instance, between Cabantian and Bunawan, current land prices would automatically increase to an average of P500 per square meter compared with less than P100 in recent years," said Jaime Tan, a real estate broker.

He said that the area, about 30 minutes from the central business district, used to be where communist guerrillas maintain camps in the 1980s before they were driven out farther west to Talaingod and Davao-Bukidnon mountains.

"The planned road system would also cut travel time between downtown and Bunawan district by as much as 30 minutes," he added.

While Cabantian district is noted for marang, jackfruit and banana, a huge part of the district remains undeveloped.

Bunawan, north of the city proper, is on the edge of Davao Gulf’s industrial belt that extends to Panabo City in Davao del Norte and Sta. Cruz in Davao del Sur. Cabantian and Bunawan districts have a combined population of close to 73,000, city hall data showed.

The city’s plan for the Calinan-Toril road, meanwhile, is estimated to open for development close to 10,000 hectares of land for agriculture.

City officials said the potential of that area to contribute to the city’s economy is quite significant considering soil resources in between the two districts are quite suitable for high-value crops, specifically tropical fruits.

Calinan is the largest producer of fruits supplied to local markets and also hosts commercial-scale orchards.

The new road would open new areas to agribusiness companies, including exporters, city officials said. Agricultural products comprise the bulk, or up to 75%, of the city’s close to $800 million annual exports.

The city’s development plan also includes a drainage infrastructure program worth another P200 million and a shelter and urban land reform program that would cost about P100 million.

The drainage program is in response to flooding in the city during heavy downpour. The business sector claimed the floods, resulting in traffic jams, also exact losses for traders of perishable goods.

Under its housing program, the city is looking at acquiring and developing from 40 to 50 hectares of resettlement sites for squatters now living within the city proper.

Close to 2,000 families have been initially identified as beneficiaries of the program, which Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said would be implemented on a cost-sharing scheme.

The program would be patterned after the Gawad Kalinga, a housing initiative of a group identified with the Church.

Road projects to open up new areas for Davao development

DAVAO CITY -- The city government’s near-term development plan would spur opening up new areas comprising of thousands of hectares of land for property developers and agribusiness investors.

Dabawenyos make waves in RP music industry

WHAT does Jay Durias and his fellow South Border instrumentalists, Jinky Vidal and Carlo Tapia of Freestyle, Juris Fernandez of MYMP, Champ Lui-Po of Hale and the reggae band Brownman Revival all have in common?

Aside from hit recording artists of songs that have captured a huge chunk of the nation's airwaves and bringing in big bucks for their respective recording companies with their hot-selling albums, they are all first and foremost proudly Dabawenyos.

The city famous for its Durian fruit, orchid blooms, Monkey-eating eagle and for being one of the largest City in the world is also the place known for having produced a number of gifted musicians like Joey Ayala, Cynthia Alexander, and Popong Landero. And is currently recognized for producing artists that are currently conquering the whole country known for its overwhelming love for music.

And yet the list does not end with the present crop. Waiting in the wings are promising musical artists like the all-girls band Back by Midnight, former Ateneo High top band The Lizard Chips, potential alternative hit band G-Strings and other musicians and bands ready to take on the music scene with their soon to be released albums.

Yet the wealth of musical heritage in this southern metropolis has not bottomed out. Still according to some, the current class of top rate musical artists is still the tip of the iceberg.

As a venue of developing the still unexplored frontiers of musical potential in Davao, the Songwriters Organization Network Group or Song was organized, and last December 2 this group of homegrown songwriters all over Davao held its first induction of members and officers in an effort to institutionalize the group.

Envisioned to unite musical artists not just in Davao but also in Mindanao it hopes to be a creative convergence of various songwriters and musicians aimed at developing the Island's music scene.

According to Jacob Chua, Song president, the organization is a unique institution that promotes unity and bridges differences through music.

Owing to the fact that music, an art of harmony, is part of a rich cultural tapestry belonging to a land known for the complexity of its conflicts.

Song aims to support and develop and unite Mindanao's budding musical artists from the songs, music, artists, and their instruments.

Chua emphasized that Song is not a body that would impose creative conformity over its members.

"No person in Song has a monopoly in creativity, it is an open organization where ideas flow freely," said Chua.

According to Amado So, Song chair, the organization was a result of a flaming desire in creating a body of musical songwriters in the City. Whose relevance aptly timed with many homegrown talents making it big in the mainstream music scene.

Among its noble objectives is to push radio stations in playing Davao music, promoting local music through the country's backdoor utilizing the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines-East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-Eaga) network.

Aside from its objective to develop indigenous musical instruments, the group also aims to support and assist the family of an overseas musician, establish livelihood support for very promising musicians before they hit it big in the recording scene, and encourage parents to support their children's inclination to arts.

With the formation of Song, various musicians regardless of genres and instruments will have a venue for convergence.

Social welfare plans to relocate lumads from Diversion road

THE City Social Services and Development Office (CSSDO) intends to remove the lumads staying along Diversion Road in Ma-a, and soon.

As of latest count, there are 58 lumads, both young and old, who have taken camp along the Diversion road for the Christmas season, soliciting gifts and money from motorists.

"We are in coordination with the City Engineer's Office and the Barangay Community Affairs and Development to help haul them. They have to be removed because they are endangering theirs and other people's lives," CSSDO Officer Marilyn S. Agonia said during an interview.

Agonia said that since the lumads are here to celebrate Christmas in the city, the CSSDO would provide a safer place for them to stay and definitely not along a highway like the Diversion road.

"We are not going to deprive them of the opportunity to experience the spirit of Christmas. We just want them to be in a safe place," Agonia said.

The lumads, she said, would be temporarily housed at the barangay gyms of Bankerohan under barangay captain Edgar Ibuyan, and SIR Matina under barangay captain Celso Tizon.

The CSSDO would be providing food for the lumads during the length of their stay here, while the City Health Office attends to health and sanitation needs. (BRQ)

bustero

^^ not necesarilly, big mix of people in mindanao mostly from other places, lot so ilocanos and negrenses too. There was a big push to migrate there in the middle of the 20th century. If you ask most of the people here you'll find not all of them are visayan origin . That's one reason Tagalog is quite a bit more prevalent and the visayan spoken there is not as deep.

bustero
December 10th, 2005, 11:34 AM
The closer to the center and the elite more english and tagalog, the farther to the outskirst and humbler status has greater visayan vocab mixed in. This also goes north which is more visayan and down south close to gensan which have predominantly tagalog. There are pockets of towns which are linguistically caught up in the past though as mostly ilocano or ilongo. The reality is that most of these languages are easy to learn anyway so easy to pick up and mix as long many people understand you. The original languages are dying though.

so what is the lingua franca of davao?

majority of the people here speak cebuano pero may halong konting tagalog. when we speak tagalog naman, may halong cebuano din.

posted by kuya pol in visayan thread:
tagalog sa dabaw is the proper term.

bisaya in davao has a sprinkling of tagalog words, so it's like a lighter version of the bisaya. nindot is not often used, so we use guapo. kanto is more used not eskina.

when you speak tagalog dinabawnon style, it's a totally different thing. for example we would interject man and ba when we speak tagalog: "alam ko man yan ba", "magkano man yan manang?". tagalog sa dabaw developed as a result because of a lot of davao maidens married tagalogs (around the early part of 20th century when a lot of tagalog civil servants were assigned in davao). and most tagalogs here in davao have also adapted the style to make him or her sound local (para di mabaligya, hehehe).

"yan gani"
"ano ka man oy"
"di ako makapunta kay may lakad man gud ako"

“I do my acting in my spare time,” Zulueta explains. Twice a month for several days she flies to Manila to star in GMA network’s fantasy series Encantadia. During these stays in Manila, Zulueta lives a busy life. “They maximize my time when I am here,” she explains.

“GMA is very happy about the pregnancy,” she says, touched. They have even accommodated her doctor’s request; Zulueta does not work past midnight.

Zulueta still sees herself in show business for the foreseeable future. “I dream of hosting a game show,” she confides. But family life in Davao will always be her first priority.

“I want my child to grow up in Davao where the air is clean and nature is within reach; the beaches and the mountains are 30 minutes away,” she explains. “I just wish there were more good schools in Davao,” she says. She concedes she may need to bring her child to Manila to get a better education come high school. Like Zulueta, her child may grow up flying back and forth from the capital to the farm.

There are things from Zulueta’s childhood that she wishes to pass on to her child. “There wasn’t much technology in my childhood. We enjoyed things like playing in the rain. I want them to enjoy such things,” she says.

And there are things from her past that she will avoid. “We shouldn’t kill their drive. I will give them all the support they need to excel in what ever they want to do, whether that be in sports or the arts,” she declares. Through her child she will live her dreams. It has taken this long, but now with her child her life is a charm well worth her labors.

New local oil firm to challenge US oil giants

By Odessa T. Victoriano

DAVAO CITY, Dec. 11 (PNA) - An all-Filipino oil corporation based in this city is set to boost the oil industry in Mindanao using the trademark "Pheonix Fuels."

The Davao Oil Terminal and Services Corporation (DOTSCo) launched here on Thursday the new addition to the country's gasoline chains.

DOTSCo is one of the corporations which benefited various fiscal incentives from the Board of Investments–Mindanao after setting up the new business in the region.

The oil firm began commercial operations last year but got the Registered Trademark for Pheonix Fuels only in June this year.

At present, nine Phoenix gasoline stations are operating in this city, and other provinces and cities in Mindanao, including Tagum City, Digos City, Mangagoy in Surigao del Sur, Matanao in Davao del Sur and Valencia in Bukidnon.

Business, economic and government leaders here joined the launching rites to show their support for firm that aims to become the leading petroleum supplier in Mindanao.

During the presentation, DOTSCO executives said they have what it takes to compete with the big players in the industry through the complete facilities that can match with the Philippine oil giants. (PNA)

kuya pol, heres a news on your fellow artisthood

ANOTHER DAVAO VISUAL ARTIST WINS IN JULES VERNE-INSPIRED
INTERNATIONAL ART COMPETITION
By Phillip Somozo

Michael Bauzon used to read American art magazines and admire the featured works of contemporary Western artists. He expresses his admiration so openly that a senior colleague once reacted and advised him to believe in his own talent and show the world that he too possesses artistic excellence. This piece of advice was significant because Mike, as he is called by friends, is scheduled to exhibit in New York, USA, on April 2006. It would do him better if and when he goes there he gains the respect and admiration of his American counterparts, instead of the reverse.

Last December 3, as wind and rain swept the pavements of Davao, the centralized air-conditioning of the NCCC Mall kept its customers bracing themselves against the cold. Inside the Mr. Donut food shop, where members of an art group were holding a meeting, almost everybody was holding a cup of hot coffee to keep warm. As this author entered and joined the group, one of the artists, Michael Bauzon, already felt very warm inside. The reason? He has just learned by email that he won Special Prize in the Decourtenay Ambassadors’ Art Prize 2005, an international art competition launched through the Web from Chatelet, Belgium, and participated in by 220 entrants coming from 90 countries!

As its title denotes, the competition was organized by the Decourtenay Galleries of Belgium, but which also operates in the United States. Theme for the contest is “In the footsteps of Jules Verne,” in dedication to the renowned 19th century science fiction writer cum inventor and author of the story-turned-into-movie Around the World in 80 Days. Other famous works of Jules Verne include 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Journey to the Center of the Earth.

Bauzon’s three entries are Time Travel, Come, Dream With Me, and World of Infinite Possibilities. All three were done in mixed media in 8.5 x 11 inches paper (please see accompanying photos). Time Travel is a view from a window where timepieces – an ancient hourglass, a mechanical table clock, and a digital hour – are falling down (or rising up) against a background of clouds. It catches the viewer’s fancy as signifying the evolution of technology of time measurement. But on second thought, it could mean the symbolic flight of Time itself witnessed from a glass window.

Come, Dream With Me portrays a boy in the foreground, sitting in a chair with his back to the viewer and, apparently, locked in eye-to-eye contact with the proverbial eye in the sky. The globe is at his feet while around the giant Eye, fronting him, swirl aircrafts, planets, and a satellite. It gives the impression of an omnipotent God beaconing at the boy to explore the universe.

Meanwhile, a shiny, metallic compact disc dominates the otherwise dark background of World of Infinite Possibilities. It is, however, brought to life by electromagnetic radiations emanating outward from its circumference, its message easy to catch: information technology offers limitless possibilities. All three entries of Bauzon’s, having to do with Time, imagination, and advanced technology, are very consistent with the Jules Verne-inspired theme.

Michael Bauzon teaches art at the Philippine Science High School and at the Philippine Women’s College from where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts. He is an active member of the Davao-based art group Artisthood. His winning entries, along with those of the other fourteen winners are currently on exhibit at the Decourtenay Galleries, 3 rue des Brasseurs, Chatelet, Belgium (Tel. + 32 486 5266 28), and soon could also be viewed at www.decourtenay.com until December, 31, 2005.

An email from Claude Geudevert, secretary of this year’s competition, states that the awarding of prizes was conducted last November 26 at the City Hall of Chatelet, Belgium, with no less than Minister President Jean Claude Van Cauwenbergh doing the honors of handing over the coveted Ambassadors’ Art Prize 2005 to grand prize winner Rafael Ide, a Parisian with Belgian roots. The ambassadors of Denmark and Hungary, and the Moroccan Consul General, assisted in awarding the other major prizes, i.e. the Decourtenay and Biron Prizes (second and third placers respectively) and the seven finalists. Bauzon’s special prize places eleventh among fifteen winning entries. Together with second placer Japanese Keisuke Kondo and 14th placer Pakistani Nadeem Azmat Khan, they comprise the only winning Asians in the competition.

Bauzon may still continue to admire contemporary Western art but, with his latest international accomplishment, his self-confidence has been boosted. Other Artisthood members who joined the competition are consistent Philippine Art Awards finalists Jun Pamisa, Rex Kyamko, and Bong Espinosa, whose effort in encouraging his fellow artists to join in the competition was appreciated in writing by the competition secretariat.

Five other members of Artisthood have in the past attained international recognition by winning prizes or entering the finals of international art competitions they joined in. They are Ega Carreon, Ben Banez Jr. (now both New York-based), Rodney Yap, Jun Pamisa, and Bong Espinosa who was recently chosen as the only Davaoeño amongst the 30 other Fil-Am artists to exhibit two of his major works in the "Beyond the Barrelman" International Juried Art show at ACME galleries in Chicago, USA..

Joining in international art competitions is one of the art group’s programs and have modestly contributed to the image of the Filipino as a visual artist of integrity and excellence. Artisthood’s year-end group exhibition “A Gift of Art” is still ongoing at the 2nd level of NCCC Mall, near the New Jersey Studio.

Payumo one of 5 Filipinos to enter Italy pro racing school

FROM A RECORD 310,000-plus entries, five Filipino racing enthusiasts, four of them from Metro Manila, made it as the Philippines’ representatives to Varano, Italy, after besting 120 national finalists in the nationwide search for the Marlboro Red Racing School.

Last Saturday, Anthony Jose, Art Raynald Bajacan, Cyril Payumo, Jose Laudemeer dela Peña and Gisella Garcia were summoned up the stage to receive their silver cups -- symbolizing their selection as this year’s bests. Their selection was met with a roar of approval from their co-finalists, friends and more than a thousand people who gathered for the event inside the Le Pavillion on Roxas Boulevard in Pasay City.

Bajacan, Dela Peña, Jose and Garcia, the lone female in the group, are all from Metro Manila, while Payumo, the youngest in the batch at 22, is from Davao.

All are excited to make the trip to Italy, where they will learn racing from world-class experts. They’ll be attending driving classes in a professional racing school at the Varano and Fiorano race tracks and ride inside a special three-seater Formula 1 race car.

“I wish them the best, said Philip Morris Phils. Manufacturing Inc. managing director Chris Nelson, who personally congratulated each member of the group. “They’re the best from among the finalists this year, considering that we have a record number of entries. That’s why we’re very excited because I’m sure they’ll do great in Italy.”
http://aw2spec.com/article/cyril-mrrs/images/16147646712909l.jpg
The celebration, which doubled as a send-off party for the group, started with a bang, as Rivermaya, one of the hottest bands in town, entertained the crowd with renditions of their hit songs while the rain poured hard outside.

But as soon as the names of the five finalists were called, a frenzied celebration followed: shouts of joy erupted from everywhere, champagne flowed, high-fives were exchanged everywhere.

“This is one of the most enthusiastic batches in the three years that we’ve done this event,” said Marlboro brand manager Jasper Evangelista. “Even at the beginning, they really bonded together, they worked as a team and I’m very confident that we will witness the same teamwork in Italy.”

Christmas villages for Baby Jesus' birth
By Barbara Carla R. Quiero

WAY before Lady's Choice came up with its "Christmasterpiece", a nationwide Christmas decoration contest intended to involve barangay residents was launched this year in Davao City.

Residents were made to come up with the colorful Christmas concepts as means of ensuring that villages feel the spirit of Christmas.

Arches, nativity sets, and Christmas trees are among the things one would see in several villages in the city this Christmas season.

In the Dayan-dayan sa Barangay, villages and subdivisions are festively decorated to exude a Christmas village atmosphere.

The contest is under the Pahiyas category of the Pasko Fiesta sa Dabaw 2005, which is a city initiative activity through the City Tourism Office (CTO).

Technical Assistant Richard Dian Belar said despite the economic problems faced today by the local government and the Dabawenyos, the city would still celebrate the season with public involvement.

"We still have these activities in celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ," Belar said.

It is through the contest that all ages show their never fading creativity and resourcefulness, added Belar.

Like all community activities, the Dayan-dayan is transforming itself into some activity for fellowship among residents and a learning experience in community involvement for the youth as experienced by the different barangays.

Barangay 76-A, Purok 26, under Barangay Captain Celso A. Tizon is already busy preparing their Christmas village placed at the island of a street in Times Beach for the contest.

Last year, the barangay won fourth place in the contest.

"Last year, abstract type of artistry ang sa amin, nasa box, ngayon may form na talaga," Gloria Alcantara, coordinator of the barangay's Christmas village.

In their entry this year, they are using charole plastic, something they saw used in other places in the Philippines. Their nativity scene this year is also life-sized.

"Dati, mga basic characters lang din ang nasa belen, si Baby Jesus, Mary, Joseph and the three kings, ngayon, may mga animals na din," she added.

Alcantara said she is hoping that joining the Dayan-dayan sa Barangay would be a yearly tradition for their barangay.

"Bonus lang kasi yang award, it's more on our passion in this contest and happiness that we give to the people," she said.

This year, she said their entry is more of a Gagmayng Kristohanong Katilingban and youth initiative, headed by the youth organization President Mac Aster
Chavez.

"Our objective really is to bring back the youth to the church activities and so far, maayo ang response, instead tambay, lakaw-lakaw lang sila, ngayon active
sa work sa community," Alcantara, also the parish over-all coordinator, said.

Tizon for his part said, "Of course we would like to be the first. But because of our present situation, we have just settled our problem in the barangay, I am very thankful for the initiative shown by the people."

Tizon added that he is hoping that through the Dayan-dayan contest, the barangay would recover from its previous image of being among the city's most blighted place to a peaceful one, especially during the Christmas season.

The barangay is using their last year's cash prize in funding the Christmas village with the help of some sponsors.

Meanwhile in Barangay Ubalde, Bamba Bacalla, the barangay secretary who is also in charge of concept and design of the Christmas village, said that they are recycling newspapers to economize on the expenses for their entry this year.

Bacalla said that last year their Christmas tree was made of materials from coconut trees. This time, they're using newspapers, which is much cheaper.

According to her, last year's entry took them three weeks to prepare but this year's preparation only took them two days.

"Hindi kami nanalo last year, pero we really made sure na meron kaming representation sa barangay even this year," Bacalla said.

Bacalla said what is more important is the peace and cooperation among the people in the barangay.

Other barangay's that have joined the Christmas village contest are Barangay Tibungco, Sasa, Lasang, Dumoy, Marilog, Mintal, Matina Pangi and many others.

First prize winner will get P200,000, second prize P150,000, third prize P100,000, fourth prize P50,000 and fifth prize with P30,000.

There will also be 10 consolation prizes of P15,000 and citation prizes for best belen, best arch and best Christmas tree, all for P10,000.

Council pushes for Davao Standard Time
MindaNews / 15 December 2005

DAVAO CITY -- The City Council here has passed a resolution urging various sectors in the city to “synchronize their time with the Philippine Standard time and call the same Davao Standard Time.”

Councilor Leo Avila, author of Resolution 1746-05 which was passed last Tuesday, said there is a need for the city government, business sector, non-government organizations, media, academic institutions and other sectors in the city to synchronize their time “for convenience not only of the Dabawenyo people but also of the city’s visitors, which include tourists and investors.”

Avila cited the city’s hosting of the ASEAN Tourism Forum on January 13 to 21 as an example. He said the Forum expects to host more national and international events.

Avila said being on time is “a value that will result in higher productivity and efficiency, better working relationship, and good and lasting impression of the city’s guests” especially since the city is now a major tourist destination and convention center in the Philippines and Southeast Asia.

No smoking ban exemption during Xmas holidays, ATF

Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has strengthened the city anti-smoking campaign anew, ordering all precinct commanders to run after violators even during the holiday season and the upcoming Asean Tourism Forum in January next year.

Duterte said the police should do their work with-out having to be reminded.

City police director Catalino Cuy yesterday said Duterte reminded the police of the anti-smoking campaign and ordered every police personnel to see to it that the law is implemented.

Cuy said the Christmas season does not mean there would be exemptions. “The law is there and we will always implement it,” he said.

He also said no special considerations will be given to visitors and guests during the ATF.

“The campaign does not give exemption to anyone. As long as you’re in Davao City, the smoking ordinance is enforced. When in Rome act like the Romans,” he said.

Davao wants Senate ethanol bill okayed

Davao City councilors are now pushing for cheaper transportation fuel from such alternative sources of energy as sugarcane, corn, cassava, sorghum, and cellulose waste.

This developed after the City Council passed a resolution endorsing the passage of Senate Bill 1677, which promotes the use of ethyl alcohol or ethanol as alternative transport fuel to spur ethanol production prima-rily from sugarcane, corn, and cassava.

Councilor Pilar Braga, author of the resolution, said SB 1677 aims to promote the use of ethanol as an alternative fuel through the establishment of a government-funded National Fuel Ethanol Program.

Braga quoted Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel Jr., the bill’s author, as saying the use of ethanol should be part of the government’s program to develop indigenous energy sources aimed at reducing the country’s dependence on imported oil whose world prices continue to rise.

SB 1677 “aims to revive the National Alco-gas Program, a former government initiative of producing non-conven-tional and replenishable sources of energy and fuel,” Braga said.

She also quoted Pi-mentel as saying ethyl alcohol production would have various positive effects on the country’s present economy, as it had been expected to alleviate the plight of the nation’s sugar industry.

“The senator from Mindanao has also said such production will generate employment, enhance the technological and engineering position of the country, and provide a continuous flow of pur-chasing power to rural areas,” Braga added.

Under the bill, Braga said, the Department of Energy would be man-dated to become the lead agency in implementing the fuel ethanol program, as the bill would also define the functions of other government depart-ments in pursuing the same program.

The Senate bill would also mandate the Depart-ment of Science and Technology to provide the necessary research and development support in the utilization of ethanol feed stocks such as cassava, sorghum, and cellulose waste conversion of etha-nol to high-value products, Braga said.

It would also mandate the DoST to provide the necessary research and development support in the efficient fermentation and distillation techniques, stillage treatment, and utilization of ethanol by products, Braga revealed.

any Ayala Centre in Davao?

there's no ayala center in Davao...however Gaisano Mall of Davao is comparable to Ayala Center Cebu. Its design is almost the same with Ayala Center Cebu minus the paseos on each wings...watcha call those paseos again? anyway.....there are four major and huge malls in davao. Gaisano mall of davao, Victoria Plaza Mall, SM City Davao, Gaisano South CitiMall and NCCC Mall...there are numerous shopping arcades as well that you can find almost anywhere!

Davao's 4th quiet Christmas
By Charles Raymond A. Maxey

IT'S the holiday season once again, and people in Davao City celebrate Christmas and greet New Year without firecracker explosions and sans the gory scenes of dismembered fingers in hospitals. So, what else is new?

Four years after Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte first implemented the firecracker ban in the metropolis that broke a Filipino tradition, people have embraced the policy that even a mild explosion nowadays from a tiny firecracker would certainly send shivers down their spines.

"People have become used to it. We have been celebrating Christmas peacefully here," says City Administrator Wendel Avisado.

Avisado said he does not think the mayor is going back to the old practice, especially with the local chief executive getting a full backing from the City Council.

The City Council had complemented Duterte's order by passing a law, that prohibits the manufacture, sale, distribution, possession or use of firecrackers and pyrotechnic device in the city.

"We have not gotten an order from the mayor suspending the implementation of the law. It continues to be so," Avisado said.

City Council majority floorleader Emmanuel Galicia said Duterte has a good reason to ban firecrackers and that is to prevent injury or even death to people.

"I begin to understand the reason why the mayor has to do that. I realized it was a good policy," said Galicia, who was one of those who opposed Duterte's call for a total ban on firecrackers before.

During a multi-sectoral meeting called by Duterte at the Grand Men Seng when the ban was implemented last 2001, Galicia stood up to remind the mayor that the national law only regulates the use of firecrackers.

Invited during the meeting were businessmen, church leaders, council members, top police officials and members of the Davao media.

Duterte insisted on banning firecrackers totally and for the people to do away what he called a “destructive tradition”.

"I was alone. Generally, it is really for the good of the people," Galicia recalls.

It turned out that Duterte's bold move was not only an effective one to avoid injury, but also changed overnight the people's lifestyle in celebrating the yuletide season.

Based on records from the Davao Medical Center, there were 47 firecracker-related injuries in 1998, 59 in 1999 and 88 in 2000.

Of the 88 victims in 2000, five were admitted and 83 were sent home after being treated, underscoring the havoc posed by firecrackers and pyrotechnic device to people.

The number declined dramatically when Duterte imposed the policy. From December 21, 2001 to January 4, 2002, the number of firecracker-related injuries in the city went down to only two.

In the next three years, Davao will register almost zero incidents, with only a single incident during last New Year's Day and the victim wasn't even from Davao but from the Island Garden City of Samal.

Berto Yaba, 32, a mechanic who resides in Buhangin, said he and his neighbors have been celebrating Christmas the past four years strumming the guitar and singing with the videoke.

"We have some food, of course, but we are content with just singing and listening to Christmas songs. Just like that," Yaba said in the vernacular.

"We also dance," added Yaba, whose scar on his left shoulder constantly reminded him of his folly ten years ago when he set off a "five-star."

In Calinan, people in the poblacion used to troop to the Chinese community in the area to witness fireworks and explode firecrackers during Christmas.

Today, they just stay in their homes and be with their families when the clock strikes at midnight on Christmas eve.

City Hall also had come up with programs and activities to brighten up everyone like the hosting of lantern-making contest, street dancing, and choral competitions in the barangays.

Four years after the days and nights approaching Christmas were silenced of those nerve-wracking explosions, Dabawenyos are still out there, reveling, singing, dancing, blowing their horns and dragging cans and steel bars with their cars and motorcycles.

They may jump and squeak in fright every time they go out of the city and are taken by surprise by an exploding "rebentador" or a even a "baby rocket," but unlike their more rowdy fellow Filipinos, Dabawenyos are sure of one thing come Christmas and New Year's Day...they will be waking up the next morning to see their fingers still intact.

PIA Press Release

Davao youth reporters' stories air on national TV

by RG Alama

Davao City (21 December) -- A wide range of topics ranging From the nursing phenomenon, the anti-truancy ordinance, child fanmakers of Isla Verde, the festive Kadayawan Floral float Parade, to the Mindanao Federal Republic and the groundbreaking Teen Prostitution story. The youth reporters of the Kabataan News Network Davao bureau have gained active prominence with their stories shown on nationwide television.

Shown on ABC 5 every Saturdays 3 pm Kabataan News Network or KNN features an half-hour telemagazine show which highlights different stories conceptualized and produced by over a hundred youth reporters spread in 11 bureaus all over the Philippines one of which is Davao.

KNN is a flagship communications program of the United Children's Fund (UNICEF) that aims to provide a new medium of expression for the youth. A novel approach that involves training and equipping volunteer youth reporters 13 to 19 years of age with professional standard broadcasting training and equipment to come up with output with very minimal adult control.

"We have made a real show for the youth, where they produced their own stories that truly represent themselves" said Dale Rutstein Unicef Communications Director.

The KNN is being supervised by Probe Media Foundation Inc. headed by respected broadcaster Cheche Lazaro, the person behind the group that produces Probe Team, Game Plan and Artiskool.

A team of competent pool of youth reporters runs the KNN Davao Bureau. Stories are being churned out which is shown on ABC 5 and NBN 4 with selected vignettes shown on Nickelodeon.

18-year old Chloe Gopo one of the youth reporters remembers the production of the Teen Prostitution episode since it exposed them to the virtually unknown side of high-class prostitution in the City involving female adolescents as a young as age 13.

"akala namin yung mga prostitutes ginagawa nila iyun para may makain sila. Pero yung fineteaure namin hindi sila mahihirap at ginagawa nila dahil pangtustos sa luho nila." (I thought prostitutes are poor women who do it so that they have something to eat. But what we have featured are the ones that do not come from poor families and they do it in order to buy their material wants.)

Teen Prostitution segment was a result of an in-depth reporting workshop conducted by Luz Rimban of the Philippine Center for Investigative Reporting in Manila which was attended by Chloe and her fellow reporter 18 year old Jona Suñer.

For Jona Suñer she fondly remembers the segment "Nursing Dilemma" as it showcases the popularity of Nursing course here in Davao City; herself a second-year-nursing coed Jona said she thought of a story that shows the world of a nursing student.

The story was re-voiced for ABC 5's Sentro News Kabataan Segment and aired on primetime television.

Llaben Pacalles on the other hand is excited on the upcoming "Istatuwa in David" segment. While on a story conference Llaben suggested the topic on the controversial King David Statue erected in Times Beach as a story for KNN production, a subject that caught the interest of Probe Team's editorial consultant Boomah Cruz.

The following week Probe Team had flown to Davao to do a story on the controversial work of art. For the first time KNN Davao and their ates and kuyas from the Probe team produced hand-in hand the Statue of David episode.

The Statue of David segment was shown on Probe Team last Dec. 15, with the KNN story slated to be completed by early January.

"Marami po kami natutunan kina ate Kala, specially yung nag-interview kami kay Councilor Acosta at kina Sir Wendell Avisado" said Llaben who assisted Probe Team producer Kala Reyes during the production of the King David statue segment. Llaben aspires to become a news journalist someday like his Kuyas Howie Severino and Jay Orense who were among his mentors during his training in KNN.

To start the year, KNN Davao is now producing various segments which deals on youth filmmakers, child rappers and the young sign language teachers, which is slated to be aired next year on nationwide television. (PIA)

Davao functional literacy rate hits 77.8%
by Sheryll Jane B. Sanico

Davao City (29 December) -- Eight out of ten Filipinos are functionally literate while nine out of ten are basically literate.

This was evident on the results of the 2003 Functional Literacy, Education and Mass Media Survey (FLEMMS) released by the National Statistics Office recently.

The survey showed that 2.8 million (77.8%) of Davaoenos ages 10-64 are functionally literate, 73.7% of which are males while 82.2% are females.

Moreover, almost 3 million (90.3%) Davaoenos are basically literate. Eighty-eight percent are males and 92.7% are females.

In the Philippines, 57.6 million are functionally literate, however basic literacy is higher with almost 62 million or 93.4%.

Functional literacy is the ability of the person to, not only read and write but to do simple arithmetical skills as well.

Basic literacy is the ability of the individual to read and write with understanding, in any language or dialect.

The survey also showed that 11.6 million (34%) of the 34 million Filipinos ages 6-24 are not attending school. Reasons cited in the survey are (in order): employment/looking for work, lack of personal interest, high cost of education, housekeeping, illness/disability, inability to cope up with school work, distance of the school, there are no schools in the barangay and the lack of regular transportation.

The Functional Literacy, Education and Mass Media Survey (FLEMMS) is a national survey conducted by the National Statistics Office.

It gathers information on basic and functional literacy of Filipinos in the country. The survey also determines the educational and skills qualifications of the populace and their exposure to the mass media.

Data obtained from the survey are used as basis for formulating new policies and programs in order to improve the quality of education in the country.

FLEMMS was first conducted in 1989. The second survey was in 1994. The latest was done in 2003. (NSO-XI-PIA XI)

Davao City: zero again in deaths/injuries from firecracker blasts and bullets
MindaNews / 27 December 2005

DAVAO CITY -- It was another “silent night, holy night” as December 24 crossed over to December 25 this year and since the firecracker ban in 2001, the city has, according to City Administrator Wendel Avisado, once again reported a “zero” record in number of deaths and injuries from firecracker blasts and stray bullets.

This is the fifth time Dabawenyos celebrated a “silent night, holy night” at Christmas. Greeting the New Year 2006 is expected to be yet another “silent night.”

In 2001, the first time firecrackers were banned in the city, the common reaction of residents to the silent celebration of Christmas was “parang hindi Pasko.”

Indeed, it wasn't like Christmases past associated with firecracker blasts.

Dabawenyos, however, have gotten used to a “silent” Christmas and New Year since 2001.

Mayor Rodrigo Duterte's ban on the use and sale of firecrackers and other pyrotechnics proved effective as there were no firecrackers and other pyrotechnics exploding, no hospital records of people losing their fingers or eyes, no firemen rushing to put off fire.

Duterte banned the sale of firecrackers and pyrotechnics by not issuing vendors and malls business permits. He said the money for fireworks would be better spent on food. He also announced a P5,000 bounty for anyone who can pinpoint anyone firing a gun during the merrymaking.

In 2002, in what could be a unique case of successful ban by the chief executive backed up by an ordinance, the City Council passed Ordinance 060-02 prohibiting the manufacture, sale, distribution, possession, or use of firecrackers or pyrotechnic devices.

The ordinance penalizes first offenders with a fine of P1,000 or imprisonment of 20 to 30 days, or both; second offenders with a fine of P3,000 or imprisonment of from one to three months or both; and third offenders, a fine of P5,000 or imprisonment of from three to six months, or both.

Managers or owners of business establishments caught violating the ordinance will also be held liable and their business permits cancelled on the third offense.

ABS-CBN Davao reported Tuesday the arrest of a man named Malig who was found selling firecrackers in Bankerohan.

TAGUM CITY -- Talaingod (Davao del Norte)-Bukidnon road is nearing completion, giving bright prospect for brisk agricultural trading activity to take place between the two provinces.

Davao del Norte Provincial Engineer Josie Jean Rabanoz, in a media forum, said the actual project accomplishment is more than 90 percent, reaching Talaingod's far-flung Sitio Nabunturan approaching Bukidnon periphery.

A flagship project of former Governor Rodolfo del Rosario, the P50-million road has been inherited by Governor Gelacio Gementiza who is giving it prior attention, expecting this to further spur the economic activity of the province.

The 25-kilometer road project stretches from Sitio Cabadiangan, Barangay Sto. Ni¤o in the municipality of Talaingod to Sitio Bayugan, entering San Fernando, Bukidnon.

Engineer Alexander Juan, area manager of the 1st Engineering District bared that the project has been temporarily suspended since November 2 after alleged members of the New People's Army burned late October five units of construction equipment (three dump trucks, one road roller and compactor, and a bulldozer).

These were in addition to the bulldozer burned in December 2004 allegedly by the same armed rebels.

The road opening had so far reached 19.8 kilometers up to Sitio Nabunturan when the latest burning incident happened, prompting the Provincial Engineer's Office to request for a temporary suspension.

Juan explained that the project only covers road opening but the engineering district has made the necessary widening and has installed culverts and cross drainage.

"So we won't be going back, doing this," he said.

Expected completion date was set on January 13, 2006 but Juan said the engineering office could not possibly hit the target unless work will resume.

"But completion target would be moved to a later date," Juan said.

"We hope peace and order condition in the area will be better," he added. (PIA/JMDAbangan)

No major makeover for tourism forum: mayor
By Stella A. Estremera

CITY Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte said the city will just be made up a bit to greet the delegates of the Asean Tourism Forum 2006 this month, but there will be no major makeover nor attempt to present the city as a booming metropolis like some major Asian cities that it's not.

"We're running the show day to day. We hope to be cleaner and we're peaceful. We're trying very hard, doing our very best to secure the place, and they're putting up the plastic flowers along the highways," Duterte said during the live interview with Pastor Apollo C. Quiboloy's Give Us This Day aired over ACQ-KBN, Friday night.

Aside from the plastic flowers, the patching up of some roads, and the minor landscaping of road islands, the city will only be presented in a spanking clean way, like a city that has been given a bath and powdered up a bit, nothing else.

The reason, the mayor wants the city to be presented as it is: a city that's doing its best to take off, but hasn't fully taken flight yet. Not some super-rich city, that it isn't.

"Tourists should be allowed to view Davao as a poor community that is struggling to be rich someday," he said, "because that's what we are."

"Maybe it's starting to gain momentum, but that's why we need the tourists here for them to help us gain that momentum," he added.

In major international events past in the national capital, there has been the practice of putting up colorful walls to cover slum areas, repaint the houses in settler communities along major thoroughfares, and even demolitions of the unsightly squatter shanties. There has been no such move in the city, so far, just two weeks before the grand event.

In the past week, the private sector led by the Davao Tourism Association (Data), which has volunteered their manpower and expertise for the event on January 13-21, has announced that the preparations for the ATF 2006 is already more than 90 percent complete--the remaining percentage being that of putting up the colored flowers, road curb paintings, and some other patchworks.

Anti-smoking ordinance well implemented in '05
By Barbara Carla R. Quiero

THE smoking ban in Davao City could already be implanted within the psyche of Dabawenyos resulting in a major drop in the number of violators and apprehensions this year amid an intensified drive to fully implement the law.

For 2005, 542 persons found smoking in prohibited places were apprehended. The figure is 42.88 percent lower compared to 2004.

There are also 65 establishments that applied for a smoking room or a smoking area.

"I'd like to believe that we have been successful to a large extent. We have already institutionalized it and most if not all of the business establishments have complied with the requirements of the ordinance for them to designate a smoking area," City Administrator Wendel E. Avisado, who heads the anti-smoking task force, said.

Smoking ban in the city started on November 9, 2002, and after a period of resentment among residents especially bar owners, it has become normal in Davao City to smoke only in places designated as smoking areas.

Avisado said the anti-smoking task force would continue to prosecute those who do not comply with the ordinance.

According to him, the intention of the ordinance is really to protect the health of the people against the bad effects of cigarette smoking.

"So we're just appealing once more to those who continue to defy the ordinance to please comply otherwise, we will see each other in court because we will prosecute," he said.

While much has already been accomplished in ensuring that the smoking ban is implemented, Avisado admits there is still much to be done next year.

"But on the positive side of it, some local government units have copied our ordinance and we are proud to say that even those who are coming from Luzon were so interested and captivated and happy to know that here in Davao City we can implement such ordinance despite the big population. Records show that majority really complied with it," he said.

As part of the city's intensified drive to ban smoking, Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte has tasked the Philippine National Police to strictly implement this law.

Aside from the plastic flowers, the patching up of some roads and the minor landscaping of road islands, the city will only be presented in a spanking clean way, like a city that has been given a bath and powdered up a bit, nothing else.

All systems go for tourism forum

IT’S all systems go for the Asean Tourism Forum (ATF) in Davao City, which officially starts January 13 to 21.

Arturo P. Boncato Jr., chair of the Davao Tourism Association, said everything is on schedule for the city's hosting of the ATF.

Boncato said they are now on the "finishing touches" and all set for the event.

He said they expect at least 2,000 foreign participants from the 10 member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations as well as delegates from other invited countries like South Korea, China, Japan and India.

Boncato said visitors would be treated to an event filled with pomp and pageantry Philippine style.

He added that they hope ATF to be a "stage of discovery" for Davao City to the world.

The city would be banking on the "islands to highlands" theme to show the city's form of diversity.

Davao's Kadayawan festival would also be staged right outside the venues of ATF so foreigners could experience the festival of all festivals.

On the security aspect, police and military personnel would undertake another three-day training under foreign-trained instructors.

Police regional director Ricardo Quinto said about 50 police and military personnel who would be detailed, as close-in security of VIPs during ATF, would undergo training on crisis incident management.

Quinto said 15 foreign-trained instructors would arrive in the city next week for the three-day training of the local security personnel to be held at the Royal Mandaya Hotel.

Aboitiz firm Hedcor secures tax incentives

The Board of Investments has approved the grant of fiscal incentives to the P4.03-billion hydroelectric power plant of the Aboitiz Group in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur under its one-day approval scheme.

Hedcor Sibulan, Inc., a new operator, was granted pioneer incentives by the board. This means that Hedcor, a subsidiary of the Aboitiz group, would enjoy fiscal incentives which include income tax holiday of up to a maximum of eight years.

The firm will put up a 42-megawatt hydroelectric power plant, which will tap the Sibulan and Baroring rivers. The project is expected to create 40 additional jobs once it becomes operational in January 2009.

The firm was automatically granted pioneer status under the 2005 Investment Priority Plan, which indicate that power plants using renewable energy sources will enjoy pioneer incentives.

Off-takers of the power generated by the plant include Davao Light & Power Co., considered the third largest utility operator in the country after Manila Electric Co. and Visayan Electric Co.

Aside from Hedcor’s power plant, the board also allowed Fog Horn, Inc. to enjoy fiscal incentives for the construction of a P404.13-million apartelle in Mandaluyong City.

The board allowed the firm to enjoy non-pioneer incentives, which means that the company can enjoy fiscal incentives, including income tax holidays, of up to a maximum of six years. Commercial operation is expected to start in November 2007.

Rellianceus Corp. was also given the go signal to enjoy non-pioneer fiscal incentives for a P645,000 call center it is putting up in Makati City. The call center is expected to be operational within the month.

The two projects were also approved under the board’s one-day approval scheme.

The agency has earlier streamlined the process of granting incentives to applicants in response to the clamor of foreign investors for a simplified registration process.

yup but Davao is very decentralized, people in general always say they'll jsut buy land na lang. 20 to 30 min away from gaisaano illustre is farms so baka matagalan pa. Will probably look like a US city, parang the OC hehe. Same lifestyle anyway.

not very clear as there are three pics.
The first one has a tall building in the middle with a flat one on the right side.
The second one is a downtown shot, if you're referring to this on the brown building on the rightmost is Gaisano Illustre.
The third is mostly greenery probably taken from the shrine or jacksridge but can't really make out any buildings anymore.
There's a waterfront in Davao but am not sure what it looks like anymore. It used to be a really classy hotel called the insular but the Gatchalians bought it and I'm not sure how it's doing.
