It must be the Samal Casino Resort. This is the only hotel in Davao that has this much rooms.

Council okays P610M supplemental budget
By Grace L. Plata

THE Supplemental Budget 3 for 2006 was approved Tuesday afternoon on its third and final hearing during the Davao City Council's regular session.

The P610-million budget will be from the loan granted by the Land Bank of the Philippines for the city's priority projects.

Topping the budget is the P268 million sanitary landfill, followed by the P151-million Davao City Sports Complex inside the University of the Philippines in Mindanao campus.

The budget also covers the P120 million for the upgrading of solid waste management and collection system, including the purchase of new garbage bins.

Also in the allotment is the P71-million for the PTA Green Park Development.

The approval of the budget was delayed because of the questions of the council regarding the garbage bins. Some councilors have been claiming the garbage bins to be overpriced. They balked at the amount saying it was too expensive.

Things were cleared up, however, when City Planning and Development Coordinator Mario Luis Jacinto was called to participate in the session to explain the proposed allocation.

Jacinto said the amount was just the ceiling for the costing and that the executive department cannot as yet put an exact allocation because this will have to be bidded out first.

He assured the body that there will be no more requests for the additional budget to purchase garbage bins next year since the ones that will be bought through the supplemental budget will suffice.

Jacinto added that Land Bank will not be charging the 14 percent interest on any amount of the P610 million loan that will not be withdrawn by the city.

Additional garbage bins to be purchased include 1,260 pieces of 660-liter bins for mains roads, public markets and high waste volume areas, 2,240 pieces of 360-liter bins for secondary city roads and medium waste volume areas and 6,084 pieces of 240-liter bins for residential areas.

Group formed to study city as an ICT hub

THE Office of the City Mayor released Executive Order (EO) 16 activating the information and communication technology (ICT) task force to study the possibility of coming up with a city development plan to make Davao City the ICT hub of Mindanao.

In her privilege speech Tuesday during the Davao City Council session, Councilor Pilar C. Braga hailed the response of the mayor to the council's proposal for such a study.

The council passed a resolution requesting Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to form the task force.

Braga said the mayor signed an executive order last November 3, citing the city's big potential to develop and open economic opportunities in the ICT area.

The Task Force ICT formed by virtue of the EO is composed of the City Administrator, the City Planning and Development Coordinator, the City Council Chair on Trade, Commerce and Industry, Department of Trade Industry, Department of Science and Technology 11, National Telecommunication Commission 11, Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry President, the proponent Councilor Braga, and the City Legal Officer.

The Task Force is mandated to come up with the development plan within three months from the organizational meeting.

In complying with their duties, Task Force ITC members may travel to Cebu and Metro Manila for benchmarking purposes.

The plan will be submitted to the Office of the City Mayor upon completion. (GLP)

First class resettlement for squatters in Tibungco

THE City Government of Davao has started construction of the P15 million Tibungco Resettlement Project 2, dubbed as a first-class relocation site development.

During the groundbreaking ceremony Monday, City Housing czar Cesar Dataya said the Tibungco Resettlement Project will have concrete roads, basketball court, and a day-care center.

The 2.7-hectare property in Tibungco will have 197 residential lots reserved for homeless Dabawenyos who have been waiting to avail of the City Government's urban land reform program.

Aside from Tibungco, the City Government is also developing another 19-hectare land in Los Amigos for the same purpose.

Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte took pride in the fact that the city has the highest land acquisition for land reform program in Mindanao, if not the whole country.

Dataya said the money being spent in the projects comes from the P100 million loan of the city from Land Bank.

The mayor thanked Couples for Christ for their Gawad Kalinga program that is helping the City Government with the project.

He also thanked a golfers' club, Medsa, for donating money enough to build 80 houses.

The city also gave P5,000 for each of the 23 families that were identified to become the first batch of beneficiaries of this "first class" resettlement project. (BOT)

Japan top destination of products from Davao

JAPAN remains the top destination of export products from Davao Region for over three decades. Total export value in 2005 accounted to 42 percent.

Ivan Cortez, deputy head of the Davao City Investment and Promotion Center (DCIPC), said second ranked USA dropped to the fifth position since 2003 as China, the Middle East, and Korea have opened their doors to exports from Davao.

He said agricultural products dominated the list of exported commodities.

Recent DCIPC listing showed that exports to Japan was valued at US$245 .9 million followed by the Middle East $81.9 million, China, $58.011 million, Korea, $47.324 million, and USA $34.562 million.

Figures in 2005 showed that of the top five export commodities in international market, banana was valued at US$354.853 million, pineapple fresh/canned $45.724 million, rubber cap lamp, $ 37.867 million, activated carbon/charcoal/dust, $27.683 million, and banana chips, $20.458 million.

Cortez said the balance of trade of the city has always been positive for more than two decades where the average breakthrough period in 2001 to 2004 was US $488.5 million.

He however said the collective figure included products coming from nearby cities and municipalities utilizing only the port of Davao as the jump off point.

He is optimistic that the trend of exporting within Asia and the Pacific will expand and grow in the coming years.

"Local exporters need not look far in finding new markets and new niches for their products as nearer market means a more competitive product as this will cut shipping cost," Cortez said.

He said players exporting perishable products to nearer markets will also be at an advantage because it will lessen the possibilities of product rejections.

Gatchalian to invest P1B in hotel business
By Marianne V. Go
The Philippine Star 11/15/2006

Plastics king William Gatchalian is putting in an additional P1 billion to expand his hotel holdings.

In an interview with newsmen, Gatchalian said that he has set aside P1 billion to acquire two hotel properties in Manila, specifically the bay area, and another in Davao in the next two years.

The P1-billion kitty also covers the recently opened G Hotel.

According to Gatchalian, he prefers to buy an existing property rather than construct a completely new facility.

Constructing a completely new facility, Gatchalian pointed out, takes time.

Gatchalian is expanding his hotel holdings to be able to take advantage of the tourism boom particularly from Asia.

Gatchalian recently opened his first boutique hotel — G Hotel.

Gatchalian’s Waterfront Philippines Inc. had recently announced that it would spend about P30 million on improvements in a newly leased boutique hotel in Manila and may open five similar hotels in other cities, aiming for the high-end market, company president Rexlon Gatchalian said.

Waterfront had leased and will manage the 50-room, 800-square meter G Hotel Manila, owned and designed by architect Gerry Contreras.

G Hotel Manila by Waterfront opened just last Nov. 16.

Waterfront may open five more G hotels in the cities of Cebu, Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Iloilo and Bacolod, Gatchalian said.

"This is an innovation we wanted to introduce to the market," he said. "There is a market now for small premium hotels catering to high-end travelers who want privacy and personalized service."

He said the 50-room G Hotel could generate revenues of P10 million a month.

There are plans to increase the rooms of G Hotel to 150 rooms.

G Hotel Manila will be under the corporate management group of Waterfront Hotels and Casinos.

Waterfront also operates the Manila Pavilion Hotel and Casino, Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino, Waterfront Airport Hotel and Casino Mactan and Waterfront Insular Hotel Davao.

I think you are talking about the old Davao Golf Club, Boyet. In that regard, I've spoken to a stalwart golfer in the area (a top GP) and he said that 30 or so hectares of land has been negotiated on by many developers including Ayala and Robinsons. In fact at that time they were ready to close the golf course to give way to the development plan. Dunno how they progressed on the negotiation since I left Davao. I know Fuente de Villa Abrille was part of the whole package and now it has started to shape up. So, this development you allude to might be the highlight of the plan.

I hope they will be kinder to the trees there. The big lot in the opposite side of the Ecoland Drive?QUimpo Road is rumored to be owned by John Gaisano. The geodetic engineering company who surveyed the huge lot is owned by the father of a friend. My friend (an architect by profession) intimited to us (his outdoor buddies) that the reason Gaisano can not develop the area yet is that there is a lot of IS in the area and some lay claim of ownership. A huge part of it though has been cleared and that is the area on your immediate right going east of the Quimpo Road from the MCArthur Hwy.

Pero murag di na makita ang Canisius so only those two. Oh sorrry, kita man diay ang Fr. Finster Building. So there you go, 3 buildings are captured in that pic.

Investments up by 16% this year

DAVAO City registered a 16 percent increase in investment inflow this year to P1.747 billion from P1.506 billion recorded last year.

The amount, covering the period January to August, is P23.655 million short of achieving this year's investment target of P1.771 billion.

Roberto U. Teo of the Davao City Investment Promotion Center (DCIPC) said fresh investments inflow is expected to generate 1,333 jobs in direct employment, a 19.87 percent increase from last year's 1,112.

Agri-business sector provides most of the jobs with 1,058.

Transshipment facility tops in investment area with P1 billion capitalization, followed by property development and agri-business with P433.157 million and P312.627 million, respectively.

Teo attributed the continued increase in investments inflow to the development thrusts of Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte in making Davao the most peaceful city in the Philippines, thereby making it an investment haven.

Another reason is the vigorous investment promotion undertaken by the city through the DCIPC and the incentives granted by the City under City Ordinance 2269, Series of 1994.

Makro Davao tops chicken sales among 15 outlets

MAKRO Davao posted the biggest number of chicken sold not only in Southern Mindanao, but also among Makro outlets nationwide.

This was shared by Girlie S. Valenzuela, manager of Makro Davao during the Club 888 press conference at the Marco Polo Hotel Wednesday.

"We are disposing about 50 tons of chicken in a month, in fact, of all our products, chicken has the highest sales and profit," Valenzuela said.

But she added that while Makro Manila runs out of chicken, their Davao branch has a stable supply of chicken.

Valenzuela said the demand for dressed chicken will surely increase with the approach of the Yuletide season. She added that the prices of chicken will also shoot up by 10% next month.

"But we will not hit the three digit figure (in terms of selling price). Last month prices of chicken in our store range from P84-P89, ngayon umabot na nang P90 above," Valenzuela said adding that Makro offers the cheapest prices in town.

Makro has 15 existing stores all over the country, in Cainta, Imus, Novaliches, Sucat, Manila, Cebu, Davao, Pampanga, Batangas, Cagayan, Iloilo, Cubao, and others.

Valenzuela also revealed that Makro Davao belongs to the top 10 best taxpayers in the city. She said that the store has improved its sales by almost 105 percent to date. (JGRS)

Ledesma: National Youths for Duterte (NYD)
By Jun Ledesma
Sunbursts

SOUNDS like a campaign spiel but witnessing how the young delegates to the National Youth Day congress that was held here last week swoon to Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte, NYD can be the most apt battle cry that can come handy even for a presidential campaign.

There was something more than what meets the eye in the warm reception given by the young delegates to Duterte who delivered the closing remarks during the concluding ceremonies of the five-day National Youth Day.

The face-to-face encounter with the mayor, which sent the young generation reeling with excitement elicited an undeniable fact: Duterte as a person and his brand of leadership is known nationwide, and, that the emerging leaders who are largely skeptical to present-day politicians are silent advocates of the mayor's executive ability and leadership style.

What could be more exacting than the pulse and perception of more or less 8,000 delegates queuing to get close to Duterte? SWS surveys can be manipulated but this unabashed display of adoration cannot. These young boys and girls are from all the nooks and corners of the country, informed, learned, disciplined and each a potential leader in whatever field of endeavor. They will hold sway and have a tremendous influence even in political exercises.

So what am I driving at? Where the venerable Manning Pelaez failed to achieve, I am confident that Mayor Rody Duterte will. I mean the Presidency. His popularity is widespread. He is known for his honor and fame and a brand of leadership that is uncompromising. A lot more of the best is coming for Davao City under his term. His achievements will speak for him. These are testaments to his leadership. Do I sound like I am campaigning?

BTW, I must doff my hat to DPWH Regional Director Dimas Soguilon. Last week I dedicated a whole column criticizing the inability of his office to tear down the giant billboards in the city poblacion. I also took note of the poorly maintained national highway in Davao del Sur and Marilog district. Well, what do you know?

The billboards quickly disappeared and the potholes and faults in Marilog were repaired pronto! I have not been back to General Santos yet, but I expect that the DPWH district engineer in Davao del Sur along with his maintenance crew are not sleeping on the job.

This corner will continue to monitor the progress of the repairs in those parts and I am inviting my readers to report to me negative as well as positive developments that need to be brought to public attention.

So, this development you allude to might be the highlight of the plan.

so if all things go well, expect something better sa South...:D something North Davao will never have..heheVIVA SOUTH DAVAO! lols

Davao divers raring to compete in 15th Asiad

THE all-Davao City RP Diving Team is all set to compete in the 15th Asian Games in Doha, Qatar slated on December 1 to 15.

Southeast Asian (SEA) Games 2005 triple gold medallist Shielaa Mae Perez leads the cast, which is now undergoing rigid training at the Trace Aquatics Center in Los Baños, Laguna under coach Chinese Zhang Dehu.

Perez, whose family now resides at Tibungco Relocation, will try to snatch a medal, even a gold, in the women's three-meter springboard individual competition.

She will team up with SEA Games 2005 partner Ceseil Domenios anew for the three-meter springboard synchronized category.

The two female divers in the team, however, may also compete in the 10-meter platform individual and synchronized events. But Perez is also likely to strut her stuff in the one-meter springboard where she won a SEAG gold last year.

It was then her first stint in the event.

Perez said there were minor adjustments when she started training in one-meter springboard last year.

She was accustomed to the three-meter springboard since her first SEA Games campaign in 1999 in Brunei Darrussalam.

But Perez, who failed to snatch a medal in the Busan Asian Games, expects another stiff competition against Chinese and Japanese divers.

Rexel Ryan Fabriga, who won one gold and one silver in 2005 SEA Games, also had to make adjustments as he was reunited with buddy Jaime Asok in the men's 10-meter platform synchronized event for the Doha stint.

The latter was replaced by Kevin Kong in the SEA Games roster last year due to an injury.

Fabriga, a double gold medallist in the 2003 Kuala Lumpur SEAG, may also pull off a surprise in the 10-meter platform individual.

Sydney Olympian Zardo Domenios and Niño Carog are entered in the men's three-meter springboard individual and synchronized events.

The Asiad diving competition is slated Dec. 10 to 14 at the Hamad Aquatic Centre. (MLSA)

Economic triangle develops 3 Mindanao towns

By Joji Ilagan- Bian
Inquirer
Last updated 04:34am (Mla time) 11/16/2006

Published on Page B6 of the November 16, 2006 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer

ECONOMIC development is possible when there's cooperation among towns, cities, or countries.

Just look at the example of three towns that clustered themselves into the Jose Abad Santos-Glan-Sarangani Cooperation Triangle, or JAGS-CT.

The cluster was formed three years ago to support the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP EAGA).

The 12-year-old BIMP EAGA aims to boost trade, tourism and investment activities within the region.

JAGS-CT is working on the same goals with Indonesia as the main trading partner.

Jose Abad Santos and Sarangani towns are in the province of Davao del Sur. Glan is Sarangani province's oldest town and port.

Jose Abad Santos has a total land area of 72,403 hectares and is the 2nd largest municipality of Davao del Sur.

Glan is approximately 40.85 kilometers from the Sarangani capital Alabel, and about 56 kilometers away from General Santos City, the major urban center of the province.

The island municipality of Sarangani has a vast coastline covering 94 kilometers. It is blessed with rich fishing grounds.

The growth area concept of BIMP EAGA was recently put into action with the formalization of trade between JAGS-CT and Indonesia's North Sulawesi group of islands.

JAGS-CT representatives went on a business mission last Sept. 21 to 25, and it was considered the largest business delegation ever to visit North Sulawesi.

Covering 14,605.92 square kilometers, North Sulawesi is made up of six regencies and three municipalities, namely, the regencies of Bolaang Mongondow, South Minahasa, Minahasa, North Minahasa, Sangihe and Talaud, and the municipalities of Manado, Bitung and Tomohon.

The 62-member delegation went on a five-day trade mission to Indonesia to forge cooperation between local government units, match business groups and open direct shipping links.

Negotiations are on for JAGS-CT to export beauty soap and cosmetics, Coca-Cola products, mango planting materials and other fruit seeds, construction materials (cement and paints), cigarettes, banana, alcoholic beverages for consumption in hotels and restaurants in Indonesia.

Meanwhile, negotiations are underway for the importation of construction materials (tiles and roofs), virgin coconut oil, essentials oils, tuna, wood moldings, wooden houses, yellow corn, copra, furniture, souvenirs and handicrafts, charcoal and knockdown houses from North Sulawesi.

As a result of the mission, the new Glan-Tahuna-Bitung sea route opened on Oct. 8, 2006.

Some export products were shipped to and from North Sulawesi and JAGS-CT using the direct shipping services of ML Aljamar.

The ML Aljamar sailed off with 170 metric tons of activated carbon, papaya soap bars, Coca Cola products, mangos, among other products.

It returned to Glan carrying Indonesian goods such as cacao, knocked-down fabricated houses, charcoal and copra.

Located at the southernmost tip of Mindanao, JAGS-CT is just a six-hour boat ride away from Tahuna, the nearest group of islands in Indonesia.

The opening of the shipping route is another milestone in the history of BIMP EAGA cooperation.

The sea link is seen contributing greatly to the progress of both regions as it is expected to lead to free and easy trade of goods in the region.

Food businesses thriving in Davao

Food business is thriving in Davao City with the shift on the people’s lifestyle here said Davao City Investment and Promotion Center head Engr. Roberto Teo in a press briefing with business reporters at Café Barcellis yesterday. Teo said two decades ago, restaurants in the city had to close at noon-time because people don’t dine outside but go home to eat their meal.

“It is a different scenario now because people find food establishments as a convenient place to dine or even hold meetings,” he said. Teo also said the good thing about the cost of living in Davao City is the fact that the basics such as food are always cheaper compared to other metro cities in the country. “The abundant supply of fresh produce (from the land and sea) somehow keeps labor unrest at bay,” he said.

Teo also said that aside from food, other types of business are still up like property development although he said that they are also pushing projects related to manufacturing. The city he said has also gained the position to be center of trade and commerce and services in Mindanao although there are areas still that need to be developed.

Davao City has also become the services hub of Mindanao in the past 15 years and people come to study, shop, and seek medical services. He said the service sector is a force that chums the economic wheels but the tourism sector can perform better if accessibility is enhanced. The city needs more tourism products and facilities and Davao will not be hard to sell if there are more tourism options.

“Theme and amusement parks will only start to consider establishing presence once a considerable market is already captured regularly by the locality and one way to attract them is to lower the amusement tax,” he said. There is a clamor that amusement tax be looked into by the city administration, he added.

Digos mayor forming team vs hired killers

By Eldie Aguirre
Inquirer
Last updated 04:06pm (Mla time) 11/16/2006

DIGOS CITY -- Mayor Arsenio Latasa of this city said he was finalizing plans for the creation of a special police team that would run after hired killers following a rise in the number of summary executions of residents here.

In November alone, at least five people have been killed by suspected guns for hire.

The recent victim of the summary executions was Rico Condino, a close-in security aide of Representative Douglas Cagas (Nationalist People’s Coalition, Davao del Sur).

Condino, also known as Tisoy, was with his live-in partner when attacked on the evening of November 10.

Policemen killed three of his five attackers during a chase. The rest escaped.

Latasa said the special police team would investigate attacks on politicians and people identified with them.

"They [the team] could be an effective tool against these people [guns for hire]," Latasa said.

Meanwhile, Cagas said he believed politics was behind the attack on his security aide. He said the mastermind behind Condino's murder wanted to send him a message but the congressman declined to elaborate.

Cagas had earlier announced plans to run for governor of Davao del Sur next year but later said he had changed his mind.

The solon is in his last term and is reportedly grooming his son, Mark to replace him. Cagas' wife, Mercedes, is a provincial board member.

Woodcraft, banana to be developed in Davao Sur
Published : 2006-11-14

Government agencies joined their efforts to develop two major industries in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur, which are expected to boost the town's economy.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Department of Tourism (DOT), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) have addressed certain issues to pave the way for the setting up of a woodcraft village in Barangay Zone I in Sta. Cruz.

Issues addressed include the stability on the supply of wood materials, environmental concerns on the extraction of wood materials, licensing and registration, location of stalls along the road-right-of-way, technology improvement, and business management.

On the other hand, application for the re-classification of a two-hectare area from agricultural to industrial for the proposed banana chips plant in Barangay Zone IV had already been recommended for approval by the Provincial Land Use Committee. The approval of the proposed project will be endorsed by the same committee to the Provincial Board.

The establishment of the new banana chips factory and the development of the woodcraft village will further strengthen the banana and wood industry in the municipality.

Davao City investments up 16% in Q3
By Edith Regalado
The Philippine Star 11/17/2006

DAVAO CITY — Things are looking up anew for Davao City as investments continue to pour into this southern metropolis, considered the leading growth center in this part of the country.

Roberto Teo, chief of the Davao City Investment Promotion Center, said the city registered a 16 percent increase in investments in the third quarter amounting to P1.747 billion compared to P1.506 billion during the same period last year.

The infusion of new investments further boosted Davao City’s claim as the investment, commercial, tourism, medical and educational center of the South.

The defunct Asiaweek had cited Davao City as one of the "top 20 livable cities" in Asia, even topping Cebu, the only other Philippine city included in the list.

Teo said the new investments from January to August were P23.655 million short of achieving this year’s investment target of P1.771 billion.

He said the fresh investments are expected to generate 1,333 direct jobs, a 19.87 percent increase from the 1,112 jobs generated during the comparable period.

With the city’s largely agriculture-based economy, the agri-business sector generates the most employment, with more than 800 jobs available.

Transshipment is the major investment area with P1-billion capitalization, followed by property development and agri-business with P433.157 million and P312.627 million, respectively.

Teo attributed the continued inflow of investments to the development thrusts of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte in making Davao the most peaceful city in the country, thus conducive as an investment haven.

Duterte has been known for his no-nonsense campaign against criminality, making the city secure for investors.

Another factor is the DCIPC’s vigorous campaign to promote the city in various international fora and investment conferences.

The incentives granted by the city government under City Ordinance 2269, Series of 1994 also helped lure prospective investors, giving them ample tax holidays that would make their operations here more viable and feasible.

City, bizmen approve food complex concept

THE regional office of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has completed the general concept of the proposed food terminal complex to be established in Daliao, Toril, Davao City.

The concept paper has been presented to the City Government for approval.

Ma. Belenda Ambi, chief of the Management Support Services Unit of the DTI, said the City Government is very interested in the proposal and that some local businessmen have committed to support it.

"The DTI is only in-charge of the promotion, the LGU will be responsible for the off-site development of the plan," Ambi said Thursday.

Ambi said they are now awaiting the response from the Office of the President after a request was sent by the DTI-Southern Mindanao in October asking the National Government to be a partner in the implementation of the project.

"We already submitted a formal request, the land to be used in the project is owned by the government, we are asking the national government to be our counterpart for this matter," Ambi said.

The project was proposed by a private sector, the Southern Philippine Construction Core Group (SPCCG). A billion pesos was roughly estimated for the in-site and off-site development of the project.

The food terminal will be composed of a bagsakan center for agricultural and fishery products, a commercial center, processing center, and store facilities. (JGRS)

I can tell that it is a very old map because wala pang Juna Subd. at iba pang mga modern time communities dito sa davao. Wala pa ngang Bolton Bridge. Then i notice that ang outlet sa davao river sa map kay going to the right dili pa st8t kaparehas karon.

Naa pa man pud daw na sila plan to put up other buildings to complement the hotel. they have yet to complete the purchase of adjacent and fronting properties...and they will connect the complex with a glassed in-ramp to the Ateneo campus once they (Ateneo) has finally moved to the Ateneo Regional Campus in Toril. The Jacinto Campus was said to be dedicated only to the Law School and The Business and Government School.

Dabawenyo artist showcases works

MANY Davao visual artists are attracted by ethnic art and have produced a good volume of works on the genre.

The Waling-Waling, the Philippine eagle, the tribal folks of Davao and Mount Apo have become favorite subjects of homegrown realists, impressionists, cubists and expressionists.

Sun.Star Network Online coverage of the Pacquiao-Morales Sunday fight here

Among these many Davao artists is one who experimented with various media and technique. This artist has successfully overcome the challenge to create an outstanding body of works with a unique mode of visual interpretation, a style distinctly developed.

His natural talent and exemplary perseverance drove him to transcend geographical limitations and penetrate the international art scene.

Victor "Bong" Espinosa, fresh from New York City, USA, is set to open his seventh homecoming art exhibition on November 18 at Charlie's Diner, Damosa Gateway, in Lanang, Davao City.

Entitled: "Turning Point," the exhibit will showcase Espinosa's latest works that express the psychic and spiritual impact of the artist's exposure trip to the world's Mecca of modern art, New York.

His previous solo expositions include: "Different world in series" first at Mother Bear Restaurant in 1996, "Nature-Nurtures" 2nd at the CAP Art Center in 1999, "Black Lists" 3rd at Chiaroscuro, Victoria Plaza in 2000, 4th: "Mythical Feast" at Linya Gallery, Iligan City in, 5th: "The Art and Soul" Gallery J, SM City Mall in 2004 and 6th: "ArtiFacts" at Kubiyertos Restaurant also in the same year.

Espinosa is a consisted finalist in local and international art competitions. He first made international impact in 2002 when he became finalist in the International Symbolists Juried Art show in Canada.

Followed by a repeated feat in the 9th and 10th launchings of the Internet International Art and Photo Contests in Japan, 2003 and 2004.

His pen and ink drawings were also chosen from amongst the 40 emerging international artists in the "Phases of eve" an interpretation of the female ideals and a fine art multimedia show presented by Art Fix International, USA 2006.

He also had two artworks chosen to be exhibited in the BTB "Beyond the Barrelman" Juried International Show (Chicago, USA) in May 2005.

Recently, his artwork "Daba-daba" was chosen among hundreds of foreign and international artists in the worldwide web to be published in the year 2007 Artwanted.com and Artslam table calendar, which will circulate globally.

In April, this year, Bong exhibited, along with fellow artisthood members at the Philippine Center Consulate in New York. The spring exhibition is called "5 Artists, 5 Paths."

Also featured are fellow Dabawenyos Phillip Somozo, New York-based Ega Carreon and Ben Banez Jr., and Canada-based Paul Corpus with guest artist Rex Kyamko.

Espinosa observed that New York is a melting pot of all major races. Immigrants, both legal and illegal, from all over the globe do all they can to make it in the world's largest city.

The title "Turning Point" refers to Espinosa's decision to "Leave the American Dream." His works will be on view until February 2007.

Davao athletes in BIMP-Eaga Games

DAVAO City is all set to compete for honors in the BIMP-EAGA Friendship Games 2006 slated November 21 to 26 in Makassar City, South Sulawesi, Indonesia.

The Davao contingent, set to leave on Monday, is entered in men's and women's athletics, men's swimming and men's and women's lawn tennis.

The delegates are National Track and Field Open Championships gold medalists Philip Ocon and Teodoro Nonato Jr. and Prisaa champion thrower Edward Pascua, multi-titled swimmer Carlo Rodriguez and country's top age-group netters El Santo Santos and Steffi Marie Dizon.

Joining the team are athletics coaches Belen Kempis Taala and Emilio Lacanaria with Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) member Rico Jhone Biliran as media representative.

The City Government of Davao spent a total of P250,586.86 for the delegation's travel expenses and terminal fees while the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) subsidized the Dabawenyos' parade uniforms, shoes, bags, hotel accommodations, food and allowance.

Sepak takraw and pencak silat are also featured in the sportsfest to be participated by Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines.

A handful of Indonesian cities will be fielding entries in the Games. (MLSA)

Coffeeholics anonymous!
By Janette Huang-Teves
Mom about town

I WAS recently invited to be one of the judges of Blugre Coffee's first-ever photo contest dubbed as "One Hundred Blugre Coffeeholics," together with Mindanao Insider lifestyle columnist Dr. Lutgardo Sicam and Blugre owner Gatchi Gatchalian.

In commemoration of its 100th month, this contest aims to recognize its regular customers and serves as a fitting tribute for their continued patronage.

Aside from its loyal following of yuppies, Blugre has also become a favorite hangout of families because of its wide selection of sinfully delicious pastries (my daughter Anicka absolutely loves their choco cream torte!), appetizing pasta, delectable sandwiches as well as irresistible caffeine-free drinks and desserts.

Kids are kept busy and entertained through exciting coloring and Crossword activities.

It was quite a difficult challenge, for a shutterbug like me, to choose the best photo from among all the unmarked entries.

Coffeeholics Anonymous, I would call them. There were so many exceptional pictures. I could personally relate to the "coffee lifestyle" being depicted.

A mom and daughter having a memorable one-on-one date. A little girl falling asleep on the table while her parents enjoy a nightcap. A barkada having a reunion and picture-taking session.

Yuppies seriously glued to their laptops, whether on official business or Aids (as-if-doing-something but actually stalking other people's Friendster accounts).

In the end, we had to limit our choices to the top ten entries based on the following criteria: Theme Compliance-Blugre Coffee Lifestyle (50 percent); Composition (25 percent); and Creativity (25 percent). Photos should be candid and show the subject(s) drinking coffee, holding Blugre cups or mugs with logo, or enjoying Blugre coffee while taking advantage of the free wifi service.

We had to make sure that the Blugre logo was visible in the chosen picture.
After careful deliberation, the entry of ace photographer Rhonson Ng was judged as the grand prize winner. Ng received a trophy and P10,000 worth of Blugre gift certificates. Now, that's a lot of coffee!

Other winners were the following: 1st runner-up -- Rolando "Chiaw" Yap; 2nd runner-up -- Ruth Copsey; 3rd runner-up -- Doie Aurelio of New Jersy Studio; and 4th runners-up (tie) -- Katrina Mercado and Karlo Tomas.

In addition, honorable mention recognition was awarded to Rene Lumawag, Florence Te, Tommy Inigo and Ronald Cayomo.

Check out the "Blugre Coffeeholics Photo Exhibit" at Blugre Coffee Landco, then at Blugre Matina Town Square, and at Blugre Coffee SM City Davao, opening December 2006.

Cheers to the dynamic duo Gatchi and Larcy Gatchalian for 100 months of Blugre Coffee goodness!
